- 0:04You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast the First
- 0:06Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:09On this podcast, the goal is not just to share our sermons, but
- 0:12to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're learning and
- 0:15what God is doing in us and in our community.
- 0:18This fall, we're living in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke
- 0:21and John. And learning how to live.
- 0:23From our model Jesus. This sermon is part of our
- 0:26series The Gospels. You can find out more
- 0:28information about our church at fumccollingswood.org.
- 0:33Thanks for listening. Today's Scripture comes from the
- 0:42Gospel of Matthew chapter 22, verses 34 through 40.
- 0:48But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the
- 0:52Sadducees with his reply, they met together to question Him
- 0:55again. One of them, an expert in
- 0:58religious law, tried to trap him with this question.
- 1:02Teacher, which is the most important commandment of the law
- 1:05of Moses? Jesus replied, You must love the
- 1:09Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all
- 1:13your mind. This is the first and greatest
- 1:16commandment. A second is equally important.
- 1:20Love your neighbor as yourself. The entire law and all the
- 1:24demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.
- 1:28This is a reading of the word of the Lord.
- 1:33All right, well, as they're heading out as, as I've been
- 1:36reading through the Gospels with our fall reading plan, something
- 1:41has stuck out to me, something that I don't know if it has
- 1:45struck me in quite the same way before.
- 1:50You see, as a follower of the way of Jesus, I've think I've
- 1:54tended to focus on the interactions between Jesus and
- 2:00his followers, right? Like in particular the ones we
- 2:03know as the 12 disciples or the 12 apostles, the ones Jesus
- 2:08invited into that formal apprenticeship relationship,
- 2:13right? There's a lot that we can learn
- 2:14about following Jesus through those stories.
- 2:18But what has stood out to me this time, as we've been reading
- 2:24our way through Matthew, are all the stories of people who only
- 2:29had one single recorded story, right?
- 2:34One single interaction with Jesus that was recorded there.
- 2:38There may have been others. Most likely they'd been in the
- 2:41crowds at different points as Jesus was teaching and doing
- 2:45miracles. But as far as what is recorded
- 2:47in Scripture, there's only one interaction.
- 2:52And it's led me to thinking, if I had one shot with Jesus, what
- 3:01would it be? Would I ask him a question?
- 3:05Would I ask him to do something? Have you ever thought about it?
- 3:12If you had one chance to stand before Jesus, what question
- 3:18would you ask him? Would you ask him something
- 3:21about your future? Something about the way
- 3:25something happened in your past? Would it be a deep theological
- 3:31question, like Jesus? What did you really mean about
- 3:34predestination? If you're in Sunday school, all
- 3:39that that hits. Would it be something deeply
- 3:44personal? Would you ask for the next
- 3:47Powerball number? Right.
- 3:49Or, or, or maybe it wouldn't be a question you'd ask at all.
- 3:53Maybe. Maybe there's a miracle, a
- 3:56healing you'd seek from it, maybe for yourself, for someone
- 4:01you love. It's interesting to think about,
- 4:06isn't it? Would I come like the rich young
- 4:09ruler asking what do I need to do to be saved?
- 4:14Would I come like Gyrus, begging for the life of my sick child?
- 4:21Maybe I would come like one of those four friends who, in their
- 4:26own faith, brought their paralyzed friend to Jesus and
- 4:30saw him healed. Or maybe it'd be more like that
- 4:35one woman who who just tried to sneak a touch of Jesus robe
- 4:41instead of getting right face to face with Jesus.
- 4:46Hopefully, hopefully I wouldn't come like the Pharisees and the
- 4:51Sadducees, right? They they came to Jesus
- 4:54repeatedly trying to trip him up with their questions.
- 4:58Like when the Pharisees asked if it was lawful to pay taxes to
- 5:03Caesar, right? Or when the Sadducees asked
- 5:07which brother would be married to a woman in the resurrection
- 5:12if seven men ended up marrying the same woman.
- 5:17All these questions trying to trick Jesus and trap him.
- 5:21That's where we find ourselves this week in our reading.
- 5:25We're in Matthew's version of Holy Week, everything that
- 5:30happened between Jesus's triumphal entry in chapter 21
- 5:36and the resurrection in chapter 28.
- 5:41And just as a little side note, if if you wish, now that you had
- 5:45started reading Matthew along with us, but for whatever reason
- 5:49you didn't and now you feel a little left behind or left out
- 5:53or anything like that, tomorrow is a reset.
- 5:56OK, tomorrow's a reset. Monday morning we start reading
- 6:00Mark's Gospel right, right from chapter 1.
- 6:03So if you want to jump in, it's a great time.
- 6:05Over the next 61 days, we'll read Mark and Luke and John, or
- 6:09we'll listen to them however you engage with Scripture best.
- 6:12Anyway, we find ourselves here in Holy Week.
- 6:17This is Jesus's final visit to Jerusalem, which as we read
- 6:22today, doesn't end with his burial and death, but with his
- 6:26resurrection and ascension into heaven.
- 6:30And it's during this time in Jerusalem when Jesus clears the
- 6:35temple of those who have been abusing and extorting those who
- 6:38came to worship. That's happening.
- 6:43All these things are are taking place.
- 6:45And Jesus's relationship with these religious leaders, it kind
- 6:49of reaches a point of no return, right?
- 6:53It's not that Jesus still didn't want them to repent and turn and
- 6:57have their eyes open, but they set their hearts against Jesus
- 7:03and they began plotting ways to arrest Jesus and even have him
- 7:07killed. So it's during this time of
- 7:11growing tension that that the, the Pharisees, the scribes, the
- 7:15Sadducees are all groups we hear about through the Gospels.
- 7:19They attempted to get Jesus to say something that would be
- 7:23worthy of arresting him for, right?
- 7:26These three groups, they, they didn't really have anything in
- 7:30common with one another except that they wanted power and
- 7:35influence in Israel and they hated Jesus for upsetting the
- 7:41balance. So in one of these interactions,
- 7:45some of these Pharisees, one of these groups, they come trying
- 7:49to score a point against Jesus. They're trying to trap Jesus
- 7:55into elevating one of the 613 Old Testament laws over the
- 8:03other 613. It's a lot of laws, but they're
- 8:08hoping that they can get Jesus to say something publicly that
- 8:12they deemed blasphemous so they can have a reason to arrest him
- 8:16without causing the crowds who are following Jesus to riot.
- 8:21The issue was these Pharisees knew the Scriptures.
- 8:26They knew them frontwards, backwards.
- 8:27They they had memorized them. They knew all of those laws.
- 8:32They knew the scriptures, but they had missed the heart of
- 8:37God. They knew the law of Moses, but
- 8:41they didn't understand what it was meant to point to.
- 8:46They thought the whole point was actions and behaviors.
- 8:51When God was really interested in changed hearts.
- 8:56It wasn't about people earning God's favor through their
- 9:00behavior. It was about God having a people
- 9:03who reflected His character, His heart to the world.
- 9:09When someone's actions and words don't line up with their heart,
- 9:15as Jesus said was often the case here with the Pharisees.
- 9:19That's that's a form of what we call hypocrisy, right?
- 9:23And some of other Jesus, other teachings that we read this
- 9:26week. He calls out those Pharisees
- 9:28very clearly for doing all these things that they're doing, not
- 9:33because their hearts had been changed, but for show, for
- 9:37appearance. It was performative, right?
- 9:40Because their hearts were still far from God.
- 9:46Friends, let me just say here this morning, with all the love
- 9:50in the world, this isn't just a Pharisee problem, right?
- 9:56It's still quite possible to know the Bible and to know it
- 10:01well and to miss the heart of God.
- 10:06It's still possible to focus on saying and doing all the right
- 10:11things and not let Jesus change our hearts.
- 10:18Anyway, back to our our our story this morning.
- 10:21How did Jesus answer these Pharisees?
- 10:23They came asking him which was the most important commandment
- 10:28that Moses gave to us. And I'd imagine they, they were
- 10:33probably expecting one of the big 10, right?
- 10:37The big 10, like you shall have no other gods before me or you
- 10:41shall not make a graven image of the Lord your God.
- 10:44You know those ones that God wrote on the stone with his own
- 10:47finger? They, they seem pretty
- 10:49important, right? But he doesn't.
- 10:53That's not Jesus's answer. And in a pretty stunning move,
- 10:59Jesus quotes from the Shema. If you don't know what the Shema
- 11:04is, that's OK. The Shema was basically a creed
- 11:08that the people, the Jewish people recited daily, twice a
- 11:13day even. It comes from Deuteronomy
- 11:16chapter 6 and it says, listen, O Israel, the Lord our God, the
- 11:22Lord alone, you must love the Lord your God with all your
- 11:28heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength, right?
- 11:33That's what Deuteronomy says, but the the gospel writers
- 11:36record that Jesus said it a little differently than
- 11:39Deuteronomy did. In Matthew, Jesus says you must
- 11:42love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul
- 11:47and not your strength, but this time with all your mind.
- 11:51Mark and Luke put it this way. They say you must love the Lord
- 11:55your God with all your heart, with all your soul, all your
- 11:58strength and all your mind. All right, we don't really have
- 12:03to get caught up in in those differences between them.
- 12:07It's good to acknowledge them. But, but remember, these are
- 12:09these stories are based on eyewitness accounts which were
- 12:13written down 3040, fifty years after the events took place.
- 12:20It's OK that they're a little different.
- 12:22That doesn't have to shake our faith.
- 12:24The important thing is what Jesus is saying here, right?
- 12:29And Jesus is saying that the most important thing is to love
- 12:33God with everything you are, everything you are.
- 12:40It's not enough just to love God with our hearts or with our
- 12:44minds. It's not just about emotions or
- 12:47affections or intellectual ascent.
- 12:50It's also with our bodies, with our actions, with our souls,
- 12:56right our our personalities, our wills.
- 12:58It's everything with all your heart, all your soul, all your
- 13:06mind and all your strength. Did did Jesus leave anything
- 13:10out? I don't think so.
- 13:14I can't think of anything. And what all of these gospels
- 13:17agreed on, whether they put all four or just three of them, what
- 13:21they all agree on is that this is how we're to love God.
- 13:28And I think when the Pharisees asked their question, they were
- 13:32probably expecting an action commandment, right?
- 13:36Something related to behavior or obedience.
- 13:42But for Jesus, it's about love. It's a relational word, a
- 13:49relational command. It's a word that speaks to the
- 13:53orientation of our hearts and our lives oriented toward one
- 13:59another, right, rather than being oriented inward toward
- 14:03ourselves. And Jesus pushes it even a
- 14:08little further, right? He's just the primary way that
- 14:11we express our whole being. Love for God is in the way we
- 14:17love our neighbors, the people all around us.
- 14:22It's in our relationships with one another that our
- 14:24relationship with God is actually lived out.
- 14:29In fact, we can't say that we love God while we hate our
- 14:34brother. That's what first John tells us.
- 14:36It's not possible loving God with everything in US, which
- 14:43which is our response to the love that God has poured out for
- 14:46us. It must change our relationships
- 14:51with those around us. It has to or we haven't really
- 14:56experienced it. If we are followers of the way
- 15:00of Jesus, we have been called to be loved into a people of love,
- 15:07right? Paul picks up this same idea in
- 15:09in his first letter to the church in Corinth in the midst
- 15:12of a conversation all about spiritual gifts and how we build
- 15:16up the body in chapters 12 to 14, Paul says earnestly desire
- 15:22the most helpful gifts. But now let me show you a way of
- 15:28life that is best of all. And that's when he goes into
- 15:33that famous First Corinthians 13 love chapter, right?
- 15:37Which describes the kind of love that God has shown to us and
- 15:40which we're to show to each other.
- 15:43Love is patient, love is kind. All those things.
- 15:44We're not going to get into all those today.
- 15:46But it ends with the line he's talking about loving.
- 15:50He says three things will last forever, faith, hope and love
- 15:58and the greatest of these is love.
- 16:04Just like Jesus said, the the greatest commandments, it's to
- 16:06love God, to love your neighbor. Ask yourself the greatest of
- 16:10these things, Faith open. It's love.
- 16:14You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your
- 16:19soul, all your mind, and all your strength and your neighbor
- 16:24as yourself. This is the most important
- 16:28commandment. Whatever else God calls us to
- 16:30do, it's never less than this. It's never less than love.
- 16:38Jesus said that this is the most important commandment because
- 16:42everything else it commanded in the law and in the prophets, our
- 16:47Old Testament, right? It all hangs on love.
- 16:51It's all supposed to point to love or none of it matters.
- 16:58God is looking to form us into integrated beings of love,
- 17:06right? Where where our words and our
- 17:09actions flow in unison out of a transformed heart.
- 17:15This is the opposite of the Pharisees hypocrisy, right?
- 17:18It's integrity, it's love, it's wholeheartedness.
- 17:25And in Jeremiah 29, God told his people, if you look for me
- 17:29wholeheartedly, you'll find me. If you look for me
- 17:35wholeheartedly with everything you are, you'll find me.
- 17:45Imagine a young man who decides to take a bold step, ask out a
- 17:51girl that he thinks is just the most beautiful and wonderful
- 17:55girl he's ever met, right? And when he does, he goes up to
- 17:59her. He says, I want to go out with
- 18:02you and I will love you with everything that I am except my
- 18:08mind. In my mind I'm going to think
- 18:12about other girls or he says I will love you with all that I am
- 18:20except for my strength. You're going to have to be OK
- 18:24sharing my body. It would never work right?
- 18:30It wouldn't even be good, would it?
- 18:34There's an exclusivity that's required there.
- 18:37You can't love God with all your heart, mind, and strength, but
- 18:43not your soul. You can't love God with all your
- 18:46heart, soul and strength, but not your mind.
- 18:51He wants all of you, and He wants to transform all of you
- 18:58into the person that He meant for you to be when He first
- 19:02thought of you. Are you looking for God?
- 19:11Are you seeking for God? Does he seem distant or maybe
- 19:20hidden? Might be worth asking God, where
- 19:25are those areas where I'm not loving you with all that I am?
- 19:29Where where I'm holding something back?
- 19:31I'm not loving you with all my heart or all my soul or all my
- 19:34mind or all my strength. Is there any part, God of my
- 19:39being that isn't unified around my love for you?
- 19:45He wants to show us those things.
- 19:47He doesn't want us to be disintegrated, right?
- 19:51He doesn't want us falling into pieces.
- 19:53He wants to unify us. He he wants us to find him, but
- 20:00He doesn't want to be. Just one more thing, one more
- 20:04option, one more hobby. He doesn't want to be one thing
- 20:09among the many. He wants to be everything.
- 20:14He wants your heart, all of you. Maybe you've been trying to love
- 20:24God with all that you are. It's just that those difficult
- 20:29people that you're having a hard time loving are getting in the
- 20:33way, right? Love would be a whole lot easier
- 20:37without the people, wouldn't it? It's not possible.
- 20:43Jesus said there is no loving God without loving your
- 20:47neighbor. Maybe this morning you need to
- 20:51ask God to fill you with His love, to fill you to overflowing
- 20:56with the love that He's poured out for you, so that you can let
- 21:00go of that hate, so you can let go of that anger or that
- 21:06indifference which is dividing your heart.
- 21:13Maybe you need to confess the difficulty you feel in loving
- 21:17certain people and ask God to work in you, to form you into
- 21:24that person of love. Because friends, this is not
- 21:27just important, it's most important.
- 21:33This is command one and command 1A, right?
- 21:39Would you let God bring healing and wholeness into your heart so
- 21:46that you can love Him with all that you are and your neighbor
- 21:50as yourself? It's not something we can do on
- 21:55our own, but it's also not something God's going to do
- 22:00without us. He longs to give you a
- 22:05singleness of heart like he promised through the words of
- 22:09the prophet Ezekiel. When he said, I, this is God
- 22:13speaking through the prophet, He said, I will give them a
- 22:15singleness of heart and put a new spirit within them.
- 22:20I will take away their Stony stubborn heart and give them a
- 22:25tender responsive heart so they will obey my decrees and
- 22:29regulations. Then, then they will truly be my
- 22:35people and I will be their God. He wants to take away that
- 22:43Stony, stubborn, self focused heart.
- 22:48He wants to give you a new heart and fill you with life.
- 22:51Put a new spirit within you, His very own spirit.
- 22:57He's not asking you to to to find love somewhere deep down
- 23:00inside you and bring it up and pull yourselves up to love
- 23:05better. He wants to give you a new
- 23:08heart, His new spirit, so He can fill you with His love, so you
- 23:16can love Him with a singleness of heart and show that love to
- 23:21the world through the way you love them.
- 23:26That's the invitation not just to add one more thing to your
- 23:31already busy lives, but to make God your everything.
- 23:38Would you pray with me this morning?
- 23:43Father, we're so grateful that you know how to do heart
- 23:48surgery, that you are able to to, to take a Stony, stubborn
- 23:57heart like I have, and you can replace it with a heart that's
- 24:05like yours. Thank you.
- 24:09Thank you for the love that you have poured out on us, the love
- 24:16that that you give to us before you ever ask for any love in
- 24:21return. But God, would you help us?
- 24:26Would you give us a singleness of heart?
- 24:29Would you make us into wholehearted people that aren't
- 24:33divided in any way, but who look to you to be everything?
- 24:42God, we want you to be magnified in our lives.
- 24:50We can't do it on our own, so we believe that you can.
- 24:58So even in these next few moments, God, would you shine a
- 25:03light into our hearts? God, would you show us anywhere
- 25:10in our hearts and our souls, in our minds, in our bodies, that
- 25:14we're holding back from you? And would you give us a courage
- 25:20to let go, to offer it back to you, Father, knowing that you
- 25:26want good for us? You want to take it, transform
- 25:31it. You want to take it and wash it
- 25:35and heal it and make it look like your heart?
- 25:43Would you shine that light in our heart and show us?
- 25:45Is there any person or or group of people?
- 25:51But I'm having a hard time loving right now.
- 25:57Would you help me confess that to you?
- 25:59Would you help me repent of that?
- 26:03And would you, would you fill me with your love for that person?
- 26:06Give me your eyes to see them? Would you help me to see them as
- 26:10someone who still needs to come to know you?
- 26:13Someone who you died to set free.
