- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast.
- 0:17It's also an online course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:31Service, and Love.
- 0:33I want you to think about a time
- 0:35when you did something really excellently.
- 0:38Maybe it was a musical performance after you
- 0:41had practiced for a long time.
- 0:43Maybe passing a test or an exam.
- 0:47Maybe finishing a project at work that you
- 0:49were especially proud of.
- 0:52Or maybe seeing a breakthrough for somebody who
- 0:55you had loved and supported all through some
- 0:57significant challenge.
- 1:00Some moment where you're like, yes!
- 1:02We did it!
- 1:03I did it!
- 1:06Now, if you can, I want you to
- 1:08rewind the tape and go back to the
- 1:11first time you ever started learning to do
- 1:13that.
- 1:15If it was a musical instrument, when was
- 1:16the first time you picked up that instrument?
- 1:19Or maybe the first time you picked up
- 1:21any instrument at all and began to explore
- 1:23how it worked and how it sounded.
- 1:26If it was passing a test, what was
- 1:28it like when you first went to school?
- 1:30Maybe in preschool or kindergarten or first grade.
- 1:34If it was helping a friend, what was
- 1:36it like when that friendship started?
- 1:38How did that person come into your life
- 1:40and how did you begin to support them?
- 1:42And even before that, how did you become
- 1:45the kind of person who could do that
- 1:46for friends?
- 1:47How did you learn to love people like
- 1:49that?
- 1:51See, whenever we achieve something significant or we
- 1:55get to be a part of a team
- 1:56achieving something significant, it's this result of something
- 2:01that's years and decades in the making.
- 2:04We've been on this journey our whole lives
- 2:06long to become the kind of people who
- 2:10can do the things that we do.
- 2:12And that can be really easy to forget
- 2:14because we think about the challenge in terms
- 2:18of what's in front of us right now.
- 2:20We think about the project we've got accomplished
- 2:22this week or even today at work and
- 2:25we're wrestling with it and we're thinking about
- 2:27the resources we have and the resources we
- 2:29don't have.
- 2:29And it can be hard to remember.
- 2:31My whole life has led me to the
- 2:33place such that I can do this thing
- 2:36now.
- 2:40And when we think about the idea of
- 2:41calling and what God calls us to do,
- 2:45sometimes we have too narrow of a focus.
- 2:47We can think about, oh, what's the project
- 2:50that's in front of me right now?
- 2:51And that's important because God does give us
- 2:53work to do right now, today, and we
- 2:56want to be present to that.
- 2:58But if we zoom out, we've got to
- 3:00remember that what God is concerned with is
- 3:03our whole life, not just every aspect of
- 3:06our life, but the whole story of our
- 3:08life from beginning to end.
- 3:09And God has been at work on us
- 3:12to prepare us in our hearts and our
- 3:15character for the challenges that he's putting before
- 3:19us today.
- 3:21So as we think about calling, how can
- 3:25it help us to see that the small
- 3:28obedience of today, the small way that we
- 3:31answer the call of God today is connected
- 3:33to this big story of what God is
- 3:36doing in our lives.
- 3:38I want to go to a familiar passage,
- 3:41Matthew 25, and I think this can help
- 3:44us kind of zoom out and see what
- 3:47God's purposes and intentions really are.
- 3:51So this is in a series of parables
- 3:53that Jesus is telling toward the end of
- 3:55his ministry.
- 3:56And he's talking about how people respond to
- 4:00the initiative and the presence of God, because
- 4:03different people responded to Jesus's ministry in different
- 4:05ways.
- 4:05Some people responded by putting their faith in
- 4:08him and following him, even if they were
- 4:09kind of scared to do so.
- 4:11Other people like the Pharisees and the chief
- 4:13priests, the other religious leaders, they resisted Jesus.
- 4:16They didn't want to respond to what God
- 4:17was doing.
- 4:18It was hard for them to see what
- 4:19was really happening in Jesus's ministry.
- 4:22So Jesus kind of tells this parable about
- 4:24the different ways that people respond to God.
- 4:27This is Matthew 25, starting in verse 14.
- 4:31For it will be like a man going
- 4:32on a journey who called his servants and
- 4:34entrusted to them his property.
- 4:37To one he gave five talents, to another
- 4:39two, to another one, to each according to
- 4:43his ability.
- 4:44Then he went away.
- 4:46He who had received the five talents went
- 4:48at once and traded with them, and he
- 4:50made five talents more.
- 4:52So also he who had the two talents
- 4:54made two talents more.
- 4:57But he who had received the one talent
- 4:58went and dug in the ground and hid
- 5:01his master's money.
- 5:03Now, after a long time, the master of
- 5:04those servants came and settled accounts with them.
- 5:06And he who had received the five talents
- 5:08came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, Master,
- 5:11you delivered to me five talents here.
- 5:13I have made five talents more.
- 5:15His master said to him, Well done, good
- 5:17and faithful servant, you have been faithful over
- 5:20a little.
- 5:21I will set you over much.
- 5:23Enter into the joy of your master.
- 5:26And he also who had the two talents
- 5:28came forward saying, Master, you delivered to me
- 5:31two talents here.
- 5:32I have made two talents more.
- 5:34His master said to him, Well done, good
- 5:36and faithful servant, you have been faithful over
- 5:39a little.
- 5:40I will set you over much.
- 5:42Enter into the joy of your master.
- 5:45He also who had received the one talent
- 5:47came forward saying, Master, I knew you to
- 5:50be a hard man, reaping where you did
- 5:52not sow and gathering where you scattered no
- 5:54seed.
- 5:54So I was afraid and I went and
- 5:56hid your talent in the ground.
- 5:58Here you have what is yours.
- 6:00But his master answered him, You wicked and
- 6:02slothful servant.
- 6:04You knew that I reap where I have
- 6:05not sown and gather where I scattered no
- 6:07seed.
- 6:07Then you ought to have invested my money
- 6:09with the bankers.
- 6:09And at my coming, I should have received
- 6:11what was my own with interest.
- 6:13So take the talent from him and give
- 6:15it to him who has the ten talents.
- 6:17For to everyone who has more will be
- 6:19given and he will have an abundance.
- 6:22But from the one who has not, even
- 6:23what he has will be taken away and
- 6:26cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness.
- 6:29And that place there will be weeping and
- 6:31gnashing of teeth.
- 6:34Oh, okay.
- 6:36This is a challenging teaching.
- 6:38It ends with that vision of judgment being
- 6:41cast into the outer darkness, weeping and gnashing
- 6:43of teeth.
- 6:44But what is this parable really about?
- 6:46What is Jesus getting at here?
- 6:49Well, I think it's, it's really important to
- 6:51look at the starting point, the response and
- 6:56the ending point in order to understand this
- 6:58parable.
- 6:59So what's the, what's the starting point?
- 7:01Well, this word talent is used, which is
- 7:04essentially a unit of money.
- 7:05It's a relatively large unit of money.
- 7:07So another translation calls it a bag of
- 7:09gold.
- 7:10You know, it wasn't probably literally a bag,
- 7:11but this isn't just a dollar or $10.
- 7:13This is a significant sum that he's entrusting
- 7:16to each of these servants, but he gives
- 7:17different amounts to different servants.
- 7:19So one gets one, one gets five, one
- 7:21gets 10.
- 7:23So they start at different points.
- 7:25And it's really significant for us to remember
- 7:26that the servants start at different points.
- 7:29Okay.
- 7:30Then what about the response?
- 7:32Well, two of the servants, even though they
- 7:34started at different points, they had an identical
- 7:37response.
- 7:38They took the investment that they were entrusted
- 7:41with and they put it to work.
- 7:42Uh, they did their darndest with it and
- 7:44they got an excellent return.
- 7:46Pastor Tom Nelson, in his commentary on this
- 7:48passage says that these are basically like the,
- 7:50uh, the retirement bankers of antiquity, uh, within
- 7:53this, uh, parable because they're taking money and
- 7:56trying to make it grow.
- 7:57And what return did they get?
- 7:59This is getting into the result that they
- 8:00get a 100% return, right?
- 8:02Wow.
- 8:03I wish that my Roth IRA could get
- 8:05a 100% return.
- 8:06That would be pretty amazing.
- 8:07That's better than the annual percentage yield that
- 8:09my, uh, my guy over at thriving financial
- 8:12is giving me.
- 8:13So they did a really excellent job.
- 8:15They did their darndest and each of them
- 8:16got an excellent return for the money, even
- 8:18though they started out in very different places.
- 8:20Okay.
- 8:20But let's go back to that middle step,
- 8:21that response.
- 8:22The third, the one who only got one
- 8:24talent is a very different response.
- 8:27He buries his talent in the ground.
- 8:29And it seems as though he he's doing
- 8:31that out of fear.
- 8:32We'll come back to that.
- 8:34And then what's the result?
- 8:35Well, the result is nothing happened with that
- 8:38talent because he buried it in the ground.
- 8:41Okay.
- 8:44Now, how does the master respond?
- 8:47He doesn't respond to the, the big or
- 8:51small size of the return.
- 8:54He doesn't say, Oh, wow.
- 8:55The guy who got a 10 talents more,
- 8:58he did the best out of everybody.
- 8:59He doesn't say that.
- 9:00He looks at the quality of the response,
- 9:03bearing in mind that people had different starting
- 9:05places, right?
- 9:06So even though one person earned five talents
- 9:08and another earned 10 talents or got that
- 9:11return of 10 talents, they started in different
- 9:14places.
- 9:14And so what's the master's response.
- 9:16They had the same response.
- 9:17And the master says the same thing to
- 9:20each of them.
- 9:20He says, well done, good and faithful servant.
- 9:24You have been faithful over a little.
- 9:27I will set you over much.
- 9:29Enter into the joy of your master.
- 9:33It's the exact same words that he says
- 9:36to each of those servants, but then to
- 9:38the third servant, right?
- 9:41Is he mad because he has less return
- 9:44than the others?
- 9:45No, he's disappointed because he has no return
- 9:48at all.
- 9:48He says, you could have taken what I
- 9:50gave you and at least put it in
- 9:51the bank to get some interest.
- 9:53You didn't even do that.
- 9:55So what he's concerned about is not the
- 9:57result in terms of its size relative to
- 9:59other results, but about the response.
- 10:02What was the response?
- 10:03It was this response of fear and inaction
- 10:05rather than the response of, of getting to
- 10:08work like the other two had.
- 10:11Okay.
- 10:11So how does this connect to our lives?
- 10:14The word talent can sometimes be misleading because
- 10:17it makes us think about like our natural
- 10:18abilities.
- 10:18Like, you know, maybe we're good at playing
- 10:20a musical instrument or speaking Spanish or what
- 10:22have you.
- 10:22And God can use those things too.
- 10:24But really this refers to anything that God
- 10:27entrusts into our care.
- 10:29Anything that God entrusts us.
- 10:31So it could be literal resources and money.
- 10:33It can also be our abilities.
- 10:35It can be the specific call that he
- 10:37has on each of our lives where he's
- 10:39asking us to do something specific.
- 10:41And we have to respond to that invitation
- 10:43and see if we can get to work
- 10:45in that area of our lives.
- 10:47What do we see from this parable?
- 10:49It's that God is not looking at how
- 10:52impressive, how big or small the results of
- 10:55our activities are.
- 10:56He's looking at the quality of our response
- 10:59to his call, to his invitation.
- 11:03He invites us into something and he's looking,
- 11:06how are we going to respond?
- 11:08And also what's the result of that response?
- 11:11He says, uh, you have been faithful over
- 11:14a little.
- 11:15I will set you over much.
- 11:18So God is also concerned not with, with,
- 11:21you know, absolute return amount, but with growth,
- 11:24with progress.
- 11:25And so this is a parable about ultimate
- 11:28judgment in some ways, but it's also about
- 11:30the cycle of faithfulness in our lives.
- 11:32And this is true just in, even in
- 11:34quote unquote, secular work contexts.
- 11:36Let's say you're running a grocery store and
- 11:39you have somebody who gets hired, uh, to
- 11:41sweep the floors at the grocery store.
- 11:43But you notice that they sweep those floors
- 11:45really well.
- 11:45They show up to work on time.
- 11:47They put in a strong effort.
- 11:49They ask for feedback and direction to improve
- 11:51what they're doing.
- 11:51They sometimes go the extra mile, even doing
- 11:54things that weren't expected of them, but that
- 11:55they know we're going to add value in
- 11:57some way.
- 11:58You look at that person and it is
- 11:59a good boss of a grocery store.
- 12:01I'm going to say, you know what?
- 12:03I'm going to keep that person sweeping floors
- 12:05forever.
- 12:05We're going to have the best floors ever.
- 12:07No, no, because now if, if everybody everywhere
- 12:10was doing excellently and above and beyond at
- 12:13their job, then maybe, maybe you'd leave that
- 12:14person sweeping floors because sweeping floors still matters
- 12:16and it counts.
- 12:17But the reality that any boss knows is
- 12:20that, uh, it's hard to come by people
- 12:22like that.
- 12:22It's hard to come by people who are
- 12:23going to work hard and give it their
- 12:25all.
- 12:26And so you want to put those people
- 12:27over more responsibility, uh, so that things can
- 12:30go even better.
- 12:31So that person's going to get a promotion.
- 12:33Maybe they'll go to the cash register because
- 12:35clearly they're trustworthy.
- 12:36They've shown that character.
- 12:37So he's like, okay, here's how you do
- 12:38the money here.
- 12:38So you give people change.
- 12:39Here's how you, you scan things at the
- 12:41checkout.
- 12:41Right.
- 12:41Okay.
- 12:41And then again, you kind of see how,
- 12:44how do they handle that?
- 12:45If they handled that really well and they
- 12:47have other capacities and propensities for doing other
- 12:49things, maybe they'll get another promotion and so
- 12:51on.
- 12:51This is kind of just the natural order
- 12:53of how progress in work responsibility works, even
- 12:57in a totally secular context.
- 12:59What Jesus is saying is that this is
- 13:01also true spiritually is that God gives us
- 13:04an invitation into something.
- 13:06And it's, it's an invitation that's right-sized
- 13:08for us, right?
- 13:10And different ones of us have different sized
- 13:12invitations at different points in our life.
- 13:14So it's not about is our invitation bigger
- 13:16or smaller than someone else's.
- 13:17It's just, what is God inviting me into
- 13:20in this season?
- 13:21What, what is God's invitation for me?
- 13:24And can I say yes to it?
- 13:25Can I respond to it?
- 13:28Can, can I give it my all as
- 13:29much as God gives me grace to do?
- 13:31That's what God's looking for.
- 13:32And when you do that, you actually grow,
- 13:36you mature, you become capable of taking on
- 13:39more responsibility and getting a quote unquote bigger
- 13:42invitation next time around.
- 13:45What are the words that the master uses?
- 13:47Well done, good and faithful servant.
- 13:50Those are character words.
- 13:52Those are describing the heart of the servant.
- 13:54So when you have that heart response of
- 13:56doing your best, giving it your all, you're
- 13:59growing in your capacity to do more with
- 14:03your best and do more with your all
- 14:05over time.
- 14:05And then that's God's intention for you is
- 14:07to entrust more to you.
- 14:10Now, what that more looks like may vary
- 14:12from person to person.
- 14:13It may not always be a measurable more.
- 14:15It might be a more significant spiritual challenge.
- 14:19Sometimes less is more, right?
- 14:20I think of Kevin Miller, the pastor who
- 14:23I've spoken about a couple of times in
- 14:25this series.
- 14:25He used to lead a large team at
- 14:28a large Christian nonprofit.
- 14:30Then he led a smaller team at a
- 14:32large church.
- 14:33Then he led an even smaller team at
- 14:35a smaller church.
- 14:36So his invitation kept getting smaller, quote unquote,
- 14:39in terms of its measurable size.
- 14:40But in terms of the spiritual depth that
- 14:43he was leaning into, as he became more
- 14:46and more like Jesus in each of those
- 14:47roles and the fruit that came out of
- 14:49that.
- 14:50And since I've known him since I was
- 14:51a little kid, I've been able to see
- 14:52that fruit.
- 14:53Um, that was an interesting more to Kevin
- 14:57and to his wife, Karen, each of those
- 14:59times.
- 15:00God entrusted more and he entrusted more, even
- 15:02though it was measurably small.
- 15:04So this, this maturing, this growing, it may
- 15:07not be impressive in a secular or human
- 15:10eyes, but it's the more that God is
- 15:13inviting us into that we want to be
- 15:15ready for.
- 15:17Okay.
- 15:17So again, if we zoom out and we
- 15:20think about our lives as a whole, whatever
- 15:23God is inviting us into today, it may
- 15:26be a small obedience.
- 15:29It may just be doing our job today.
- 15:31It may just be loving our kids today.
- 15:33It may not be anything that's particularly impressive
- 15:35or even worth making a social media post
- 15:37about.
- 15:38And yet when we step into that invitation
- 15:42to a small obedience, we're putting one more
- 15:45step in this lifelong pathway where God is
- 15:49growing us into the kind of people who
- 15:51can do more and more meaningful and fruitful
- 15:53work in his kingdom.
- 15:57Okay.
- 15:57What's the, what's the alternative?
- 15:59The alternative is fear.
- 16:00The alternative is this attitude of the servant
- 16:02who, who his vision of the master is
- 16:05that the master is somehow devious and unfair,
- 16:07and that's actually really significant that if we
- 16:11believe that God is not going to do
- 16:12right by us, we will never be able
- 16:13to take risks of obedience.
- 16:15Our obedience flows from our faith and our
- 16:18trust in God's ultimate character of love for
- 16:21us and for the whole world.
- 16:24And so if you're on the cusp of
- 16:25something that you feel like is an invitation
- 16:27from God, a call to obedience, be a
- 16:30big or small, and you have a feeling
- 16:32of fear, the thing to do is to
- 16:36set your face toward Jesus, to look at
- 16:39his face.
- 16:41Because when you see that Jesus is good,
- 16:44that Jesus is faithful, that he is the
- 16:46good and faithful servant, that he will do
- 16:49right by the call of the father on
- 16:51his life, and he will do right and
- 16:52more by you, that's going to give you
- 16:55the courage you need, the freedom you need
- 16:56to say yes to that invitation.
- 17:00And over time, God makes us into the
- 17:03kind of people who can inherit eternity.
- 17:07Cause, cause this parable, as I mentioned, it
- 17:08is about ultimate judgment in some ways, that's
- 17:10why it has that, that weeping and gnashing
- 17:12of teeth at the end.
- 17:13Is there, there's a sense in which this
- 17:15is a description just of how we do
- 17:16our work with God in the here and
- 17:18now, but it's also a description of, of
- 17:20the ultimate posture of our heart.
- 17:22Is our heart open to God or closed
- 17:24to God for eternity?
- 17:26And if our heart is closed to God,
- 17:27God, isn't going to go in there and
- 17:29pry it open against our will.
- 17:31And that's why there is ultimately a place
- 17:33of judgment for those who have refused to
- 17:36participate, refuse to answer the invitation of God,
- 17:40a sobering reminder.
- 17:43But for anyone who's willing, for anyone who's
- 17:45willing to open their heart, their own free
- 17:47will, and let God get that open and
- 17:49more open and more open, what we end
- 17:51up inheriting is eternal life.
- 17:54What we end up inheriting is the new
- 17:56heavens and new earth that God is creating.
- 17:59And that's why I love what Dallas Willard
- 18:01says.
- 18:02You guys knew I had to get to
- 18:03another Dallas Willard quote at some point, right?
- 18:06Um, that's why it's a beautiful quote.
- 18:07He says, the main thing God gets out
- 18:10of your life is not the achievements you
- 18:12accomplish.
- 18:13It's the person you become.
- 18:17The main thing God gets out of your
- 18:19life is not the achievements you accomplish.
- 18:21It's the person you become.
- 18:26God is preparing us to be the kind
- 18:28of people who can inherit eternity.
- 18:32That's why your small obedience today matters.
- 18:39Come Lord Jesus.
- 18:40Come give us courage to say yes to
- 18:42your invitation.
- 18:44Thank you that you make us more and
- 18:46more the people who can say yes to
- 18:48more and more of you and your life
- 18:51and your love.
- 18:52Help us remember that that invitation comes in
- 18:54little daily pieces.
- 18:57Do your work in us as we do
- 18:59our work with you.
- 19:01Amen.
