Transcript
- 0:00And that was the lesson I learned in this because I'm a
- 0:02guitar player. So you always write the song
- 0:04like, oh, I wrote this song and however you want to do it.
- 0:07And then you get to the to where we are at this point where
- 0:10there's so many people involved that it's not just you and your
- 0:14song. It's not just one person.
- 0:15It's the team that actually makes all of this come to life
- 0:19at the end of the day. And I'm just so proud to have
- 0:22worked with all of these people on this.
- 0:30What's up everybody? It's Kefi at ghostcultman.com.
- 0:33I am super stoked to be talking to Austin from the rock band
- 0:36Back from Zero today. How are you doing?
- 0:38Pretty good. Thank you.
- 0:39Thank you for having me. I appreciate being here.
- 0:40Yeah man, very excited about all the things you have going on.
- 0:44So much to talk about. But First things first, let's
- 0:47unpack the history of the band a little bit.
- 0:49I always like to start with a new interview that's new to me
- 0:52and new to our fans. To hear a little bit about your
- 0:54back story. How did you get into playing
- 0:56music and then how did this band begin?
- 0:58Wow, that's a long journey. I've been doing it for many a
- 1:01years and I started playing guitar when I was I think I
- 1:05think like 8 years old or 12 years old somewhere like really
- 1:08young age. And funny thing about playing
- 1:10the guitar and the my very first lesson that I played actually
- 1:13cried trying to hit the note because it was like so tentative
- 1:15on my finger. But then Fast forward many years
- 1:19and here we all went back from zero and I played school music
- 1:23through high school and all that.
- 1:24I've been in 1000 bands just like most guitar players have
- 1:27been and I love every minute of it.
- 1:29I mean, there's UPS, there's downs.
- 1:30At times you hate it, you wish you never learned, yada yada.
- 1:33But at the end of the day, it's the greatest thing I've ever
- 1:35done is play music, you know? So here we all went Back from
- 1:39Zero and I've been with these guys now for about, I think
- 1:43about 12 years. And the cool thing is, here's
- 1:46how the whole thing came together with Back From Zero.
- 1:49I had had a project that I was trying to get off the ground.
- 1:52I was like completely solo. I was just trying to still find
- 1:54musicians. And then at one point in my
- 1:56life, I found this woman who she found me.
- 1:59Vice versa, however you want to put it.
- 2:01And one thing led to another. And The funny thing was she's
- 2:03like, hey, she's like, my son happens to be a singer.
- 2:07Would you want to jam with him and see where anything goes?
- 2:09So I was like, there, why not? Let's check it out.
- 2:12So lo and behold, it worked out really well.
- 2:15And he had a friend who's actually in our studio right now
- 2:17in the other room, Eric, who's a drummer.
- 2:20And he came on board and we, we literally, I mean, it seems
- 2:24like, you know, we got a lot of things going on right now, which
- 2:26is cool, but we started in Eric's basement rehearsing twice
- 2:30a week, and he's very small. Very dungeon like basement twice
- 2:36a week on a little 12 inch amp and everything else.
- 2:38And you know, here we all putting out videos.
- 2:41So that's like in a nutshell kind of what happened.
- 2:44But that's How I Met these guys. It was actually funny enough all
- 2:46through my girlfriend. Nice.
- 2:47Being from New York myself, historically, I know there are
- 2:50no such things. We rehearsed in his giant
- 2:53basement is no such a sense has ever been uttered by anybody,
- 2:56especially in the five boroughs. I'm from the Bronx.
- 2:58I lived in Brooklyn for a long time, for five years before I
- 3:01moved out here. When I came back, I was in the
- 3:03Bronx for like 33 years and it's the same thing rehearsed to my
- 3:06guitar players. Basement.
- 3:07We have half a basement for a band.
- 3:10We made it work. Drop, drop ceiling.
- 3:12Not the best acoustics, but you make it work.
- 3:15What a killer band. So far it seems like there, you
- 3:18know, there's a lot of depth and fun to the band, which I really
- 3:20love. And we'll talk about the Taking
- 3:22Back the Night video in a second.
- 3:23You know, everybody, it's funny, I I, I was listening to some of
- 3:26your stuff on Spotify and then the next music that came on was
- 3:29all like G&R Down, Black Label Society.
- 3:33So it's like, you know, Spotify is like, if you like this, well,
- 3:36here's some other stuff you probably already like and listen
- 3:38to. I think there was some Alice In
- 3:39Chains in there. So awesome.
- 3:41Yeah, it was fun. It's fun to get like, what's
- 3:43relatable, right? And yeah.
- 3:45You know, obviously you said you played in 1000 bands and
- 3:47probably different kinds of bands, right.
- 3:49But like. Yeah, I played different types,
- 3:51yeah. Hard Rock is kind of the
- 3:52universal rock love language, right?
- 3:54So like, I could see why that's the thing for you.
- 3:56I I would agree to that. Hard Rock is definitely, in my,
- 3:59in my opinion, my favorite type of rock'n'roll.
- 4:01Yeah, no, there's nothing like a hard drive just like what, what
- 4:04I would call like a dirty rock band, you know what I mean?
- 4:07Just a down home really just grinding it out.
- 4:10Rock'n'roll band. Absolutely.
- 4:12So then the bands you mentioned are very much on par with all
- 4:15the influences I've had over the years.
- 4:16I mean, I, I see you wearing a shirt that is that.
- 4:19I don't know if it is a Guns and Roses shirt, but it resembles 1.
- 4:23And it's funny, I almost wore an Appetite for Destruction shirt
- 4:26for the interview. I I ended up with Bigfoot.
- 4:29I went with Bigfoot, but I almost went with Guns and Roses
- 4:32and they were a huge on just everything that we did.
- 4:35All the bands you mentioned, Alice in Change, another huge
- 4:37influence. That whole Seattle scene in
- 4:39general was a huge influence on just everything we've done that
- 4:42I've done anyway. Personally.
- 4:44Yeah, But no, I've been in a lot of different bands a little, a
- 4:46lot of different types of music. One of my favorite bands is the
- 4:49Black Crows of all time. I absolutely love those guys.
- 4:52Rich Robinson is a huge influence, to say the least.
- 4:55And at one point I was in a band many, many years ago, and that
- 4:59was the style that we were doing, you know what I mean?
- 5:01We were doing more the Southern rock style.
- 5:03So yeah, it varies, you know. Right on.
- 5:06It's a it's not an actual guns and roses shirt.
- 5:08It's like the spoof shirt from a a brand called meth syndicate
- 5:11that I like a lot. They make funny, you know, it
- 5:13looks like one thing, but it's another.
- 5:15It actually says seal says SEAL kiss from a rose.
- 5:18But it's the guns and roses logo, right.
- 5:20That's great. So it's funny.
- 5:22There's a there's a few of those people have seen me wear their
- 5:25shirts. I love I love the black crows.
- 5:27I actually never thought they would reunite.
- 5:28I thought the brothers absolutely hated each other and
- 5:31they would never be able to get it like even be friends let
- 5:34alone make a whole their new albums awesome I actually.
- 5:36Really. I have it in my phone.
- 5:38I haven't listened to it yet. I'm going to do that over the
- 5:40week. I can't wait.
- 5:42Yeah. Yeah, it's really good.
- 5:43And I got to see them live actually a year and a half ago
- 5:46for the first time since like the 90s, and they were so good.
- 5:50I hadn't, I had just missed them, missed them with all the
- 5:53things. And I remember seeing them back
- 5:55in the day. I was like, they were so good at
- 5:57what they do and they were so good and dialed in now.
- 6:00So it's nice. It's nice to have them back.
- 6:02It's funny, the black froze out of every band I've ever seen
- 6:05live. They're the band I've seen the
- 6:07most times live. I love going to a black froze by
- 6:10all means. I've I've probably seeing them
- 6:11like close to 20 times. I've been following them since I
- 6:14first since they first originally came out with shaking
- 6:17money maker whatever year that was.
- 6:19I think that was 91 if I'm not mistaken.
- 6:21But since then, man, I mean, I've, I've, I've never put them
- 6:24down. They're just, they're a great,
- 6:26just great rock'n'roll band. I just love them.
- 6:28Right on, I'm pretty sure Chris thought that he was going to be
- 6:30like a humongous solo star, right, could be like a Steven
- 6:33Tyler and be able to have a career out.
- 6:36I think he thought that he would be like I don't need my brother
- 6:38or the band and I can also do this.
- 6:41But it's nice to have them back. I know there's there was the
- 6:44bigger a band gets there sometimes some drama.
- 6:46So it's cool that they're it's cool that we can have some of
- 6:48these legacy bands come back to our lives.
- 6:51But let's let's talk about back from zero.
- 6:53Man, I love the taking back the night video and track.
- 6:55First of all, the song is a banger, right?
- 6:57It's a Ripper. Thank you said like a super
- 6:59reminding me of like early ACDC, A lot of boogie or Z top, like
- 7:03very aggressive rock. And then the video is hilarious.
- 7:06I'm, I was back in New York. I was back in New York last year
- 7:10and I didn't get to go to Coney Island, but I got to go to Coney
- 7:13Island with your video, which was great.
- 7:15And it was. Great.
- 7:16And if anybody is a fan of the Warriors movie, which I of
- 7:19course am, you know, it's it's kind of a nod to the Warriors,
- 7:23which is hilarious, said you, I think you guys all played the
- 7:26different, the tribes. Yeah, we played every gang in
- 7:30the video, Yeah, and it definitely is a nod to the
- 7:33Warriors for sure. Much fun.
- 7:35Yeah. And, and and and the song, like
- 7:37the song's killer. And then the video just
- 7:39amplifies the power of the song for me.
- 7:41Thank. Thank you so much, man.
- 7:43It's amazing to hear a compliment that anybody likes
- 7:45what I do. I really appreciate that, man.
- 7:46Thank you very much. Now it's always great.
- 7:48It's like, wow, somebody's digging what we're doing.
- 7:50That's so cool, you know. And the video actually, funny
- 7:54enough, came to came to being because me and my drummer Eric
- 7:57were thinking about. We were like, oh, we got to come
- 7:59up with the video. So he had come up originally
- 8:02with let's just play on a train, just like New York City, let's
- 8:05just play on a train. All of his jamming on a train.
- 8:08And only like I, that's really cool.
- 8:09And then we both start thinking. And I said to him, I said, wait
- 8:12a minute, the train. I said, you know, it'd be cool.
- 8:15He's like what? I said, how about a Warriors
- 8:17themed video? And he's like, yeah.
- 8:19And then it just, it just went from there.
- 8:21And we wrote the video in the script that I actually, no, we
- 8:24originally had an idea for the video and then it changed once
- 8:27we got somebody who who was able to film it and make it happen.
- 8:31The director, Jerry Farley, once we got him on board, he was
- 8:34like, all right, I'm doing this with it and you guys are going
- 8:36to follow like, yeah, no problem.
- 8:37So it was great. That's awesome.
- 8:39Shout out to Jerry and anybody looking to work with Jerry,
- 8:42we'll find a link to his stuff here and add it to the link with
- 8:45your stuff in the description because he did a phenomenal job.
- 8:48And just the, again, capture the personality of the guys, capture
- 8:51the personality of the song, capture the personality of
- 8:53Brooklyn. Coney Island is iconic, you
- 8:55know, the wonder wheel and everything.
- 8:57And just the, the, the Spire was used in every, you know, all the
- 9:01type of photos and things like that.
- 9:05Yeah. I don't know if you were a big
- 9:0690s metal guy in New York City, but it was, that was like my
- 9:09time, late 80s, early 90s for metal and rock.
- 9:13And that was such a good time and such a good time to be in
- 9:16bands in the city and kind of be a local band because there was a
- 9:19lot of labeling activity in New York City and there was a lot of
- 9:22bands like you felt like I saw Life of Agony and Type O
- 9:25Negative and I was like, maybe I can do that.
- 9:27Look at those guys are from almost where I'm from, like the
- 9:30same neighborhoods almost, you know, like the same kind of
- 9:32dudes, same kind of people. So I was like, maybe I can do
- 9:35that. I don't know.
- 9:37No, those guys actually I, I, I've met Mina a few times.
- 9:42Mina Caputo, I met him a few times, met them a few times
- 9:44rather, and they were friends with somebody that I knew from
- 9:47the neighborhood, Rob and we actually bonded over family
- 9:51stuff and stuff like that. So I actually played Lemoore's a
- 9:54bunch of times back in the day with a band called the other
- 9:56side and we all sprouted from Lemoore.
- 9:58So that's how I actually know everybody from back in the day
- 10:02because like Type O Negative, we knew of them and we played
- 10:04different shows on different weekends.
- 10:06But like everybody didn't know each other back then.
- 10:08So it was just kind of like a big I I wasn't in their circles,
- 10:11but like we all knew each other from the area and the club.
- 10:14We all did different shows on different weekends.
- 10:16So we all knew of each other at the very least.
- 10:18Nice, I only got to go to Lemoore twice and never played
- 10:21there, but I played CBS and everywhere else, so that's cool.
- 10:24Good enough for me. I got, I got to go at least and
- 10:26see other bands play before they were gone.
- 10:28And then I really like after that.
- 10:30I got to do all the things. But yeah, yeah, it's and then so
- 10:34the next single, cuz you have it.
- 10:35So the album is coming out, by the way, 5 is coming out the end
- 10:38of the end of April. Record this now and it's shaping
- 10:43up to be, you know, just awesome.
- 10:45And I really. So the new single I got, I got
- 10:47to hear it early and see the video early.
- 10:49Thanks to the the management there letting trusting me and
- 10:51letting me, you know, get prepared for this interview with
- 10:53the material and. Thank you for watching.
- 10:56Yeah, of course. So the, so we'll talk about the
- 10:57song first. The songs, it's a little more
- 10:59sensitive. It's a little more sensitive,
- 11:01but I, I, I dig it. We also, you know, I mean, like
- 11:04our reputation here is that we do metal, right, but we also
- 11:07cover a lot of other things that are not metal.
- 11:09And I personally love a lot of singer-songwriter stuff.
- 11:13You know, I fancy myself as I wanted to do that for a long
- 11:16time and play some guitar badly and I could fart out a song.
- 11:19But like, I'm really into like, you know, I think it's a lot of
- 11:24bands can rock out, rock the fuck out.
- 11:26But like, I think like to be able to make like a very deep,
- 11:29meaningful song and not go hard the whole way is a skill that
- 11:33not everybody has. So I really like, I really like
- 11:35the song. Dean is the singer, right?
- 11:37Great voice. Yes, that is.
- 11:38Correct fantastic, which really touching lyrics.
- 11:41I don't know who's the if it's Dean or collectively the lyrics.
- 11:44I actually wrote the lyrics. Oh.
- 11:46Yeah, it's really good. It's really good.
- 11:47I appreciate that. Yeah.
- 11:48That's a very personal song, yeah.
- 11:50Yeah, I could tell. I it feels personal, like it
- 11:52feels like it, it means something, which is always
- 11:55better because if you can make something that if you're
- 11:57connecting to me, somebody else out there listening.
- 11:59Right, right. Thank you very much.
- 12:01I appreciate that and we do. We definitely hope that song in
- 12:04particular resonates and like clicks with people really do
- 12:07hope people can feel it and relate to it, you know, So I'm
- 12:10looking forward to it. Thank you for the for the kind
- 12:12words on the song. I appreciate it man.
- 12:14Well, thank you. I go from the heart, so
- 12:16whatever, you know, I don't gush about things I don't really care
- 12:19about and enjoy and I can do an I can do an interview and and
- 12:22not be and I also don't have to be a Dick.
- 12:25There's definitely a lot of things I don't like and even
- 12:28friends of mine, by the way, people all the time are like,
- 12:30you must like, like support every band your friends have.
- 12:33No, I don't, because sometimes they're not good enough, but
- 12:37sometimes I do. And then I got to see the video,
- 12:39which is really another cool 1. So let's talk a little bit about
- 12:43that video. Sure, what would you like to
- 12:45know by all means. Just in general, like obviously
- 12:48this people are going to see this interview following the
- 12:50video. We'll link the video also, so
- 12:51we'll be able to go watch it after.
- 12:54But but also like, yeah, like just tell us a little bit.
- 12:56Did you want the video to kind of tell the story of the song?
- 12:58Yes, Now it's the whole way it went down was we knew we had to
- 13:02write a video for the song. So me and my me and my drummer
- 13:05Eric, we got together and wrote the script for the song.
- 13:07So it's based on true events by all means.
- 13:10Like there's a lot of personal things that I put in the video,
- 13:13but it's definitely a, I wouldn't say night.
- 13:16It's basically a fictitious story kind of sort of, but it
- 13:19still tells the story at the same time, if that makes sense.
- 13:22Like that there would there may be different, like the events
- 13:25have changed and certain things that, but nevertheless it's
- 13:27still the same. It did that.
- 13:29The meaning is still there, like everything the video trying to
- 13:31convey. That's true.
- 13:33Just different events happened necessarily, but the conveyance
- 13:35is the same. John Lamacchia from Candiria
- 13:39directed it and Michael McAvoy from Candiria actually starred
- 13:42in it. He was the main character of it,
- 13:44and I've become good friends with these guys that they're
- 13:46absolutely fantastic with. It's because of John Lamacchia
- 13:50that we got everything done that we got done.
- 13:53So he became our manager about a year ago.
- 13:55And man, he's what a great dude, man.
- 13:58I can't say enough good things about him.
- 14:00And John reached out and we, me and Eric wrote this script and
- 14:04we told John we're like, this is what we want to do.
- 14:06And he's like, all right, He's like, it's a lot to take on, but
- 14:09I'll do what I can. So he actually made it all
- 14:12happen. And he got Sean from Washed Up
- 14:15Media as a cameraman. And Sean came in and Sean was
- 14:18like, I love the song, I love the concept.
- 14:21He goes, we could do this. So I was like, all right, so
- 14:23then we had to find an actor and that's how we found Michael.
- 14:25Cause John was like, maybe we can get Mike.
- 14:27I said, get Mike. I love Mike, get Mike to do it.
- 14:30So he's like, all right, cool. And then John found a woman
- 14:34named Jay that I didn't know John knew her and he got her to
- 14:37act in as the, the lady in the video.
- 14:40And then we just got the shooting and we were really
- 14:43lucky. The shoot itself only took three
- 14:46days in total to get done everything, which was really
- 14:50nice. I mean, it took work to make it
- 14:52all happen happened. But once the ball got rolling,
- 14:55and that's honestly, that's all because of Mary Thin, John's
- 14:59friend. Mary, she made everything happen
- 15:01in that regard because she knew, I mean, she had the, the, the
- 15:05shot set up, she had the scenes ready to go.
- 15:08She had the bedroom completely disheveled, so the right you go
- 15:12vibe would get across. She had the right to.
- 15:15She had everything together, man.
- 15:17She was awesome. Her and John made this all.
- 15:19I mean, just everybody came together.
- 15:21And it's funny, I've learned this whole video was just like,
- 15:25yeah, I wrote the song and I'm very proud of it And I I'll talk
- 15:27to you about lyrics every whatever you want to know.
- 15:29But without the team that made it actually happen, none of it
- 15:32would have came to fruition. And that was the lesson I
- 15:35learned in this because I'm a guitar player.
- 15:37So you always write the song like, oh, I wrote this song and
- 15:40however you you want to do it. And then you get to the to where
- 15:43we are at this point where there's so many people involved
- 15:46that it's not just you and your song.
- 15:48It's not just one person. It's the team that actually
- 15:52makes all of this come to life at the end of the day.
- 15:54And I'm just so proud to have worked at all of these people on
- 15:57this. And yeah, that's kind of how it
- 16:00came about. To answer your question in a
- 16:03long way. I I do answer in a long ways.
- 16:05I apologize, but there you go. That's.
- 16:09OK, people are trying. I've done thousands these
- 16:11videos, people are tired of hearing from me.
- 16:12So like, believe me, I talk enough on these podcasts and
- 16:15videos, but no, it does take a team.
- 16:17Sounds like a real family environment.
- 16:19John is fantastic. Everybody knows we're big fans
- 16:22of his. We've we've done a lot of stuff
- 16:23with John over the years. And I obviously was a humongous
- 16:26Kandaria fan, all eras of the band.
- 16:30And John is so gifted. Just, you know, record label
- 16:33artist, solo artist, member of other bands.
- 16:37So really terrific, dude. Yeah, man.
- 16:40So like, the album's coming out soon.
- 16:42What are, do you have like, some some shows lined up?
- 16:44Any other goals you want for this music to get out there?
- 16:46Absolutely. We do have a show.
- 16:49The only solid show we know of so far right now is Alien Ant
- 16:52Farm on June 9th at Saint at Saint Vidus.
- 16:55We open it up for them, which is going to be a really cool,
- 16:57really cool show, really cool night.
- 16:59And aside from that, we're still working on some shows to
- 17:04immediately promote the the the album coming out.
- 17:09We will be on the radio, which is cool too.
- 17:12Somebody that we know through John, a man named Munzie, very
- 17:15great guy, Skateboard media. He he's putting us on the radio
- 17:19apparently. So we're going to be a, I don't
- 17:21even know where yet, but apparently we're going to be on
- 17:24some radio waves that I'm really hoping to gain a lot of
- 17:27listeners from that. So that's next.
- 17:30And then like I said, we got the show and honestly, we'll look at
- 17:33a record again. We're that's why we're at the
- 17:35studio right now. Me and my drummer, we're getting
- 17:37ready to blend sounds on the amps and stuff and we're getting
- 17:39some stuff done. But as far as shows go, just the
- 17:43the June 9th show is the only one we have the 3rd and right
- 17:46now and we may do an in store record appearance or in store
- 17:49record store appearance the day of the the day of the release.
- 17:53We're not sure aware yet that's to be announced.
- 17:56Awesome. I know Muncie.
- 17:57Well, I'm going to give you my Muncie impression.
- 17:58It worked. The record, kid.
- 18:00That's Muncie, and he's a legend.
- 18:02We all know anybody who's a New Yorker knows about, see,
- 18:05probably like all over the world, they know that guy.
- 18:07Metal Hall of Fame. He's awesome.
- 18:08He's in the Metal Hall of Fame for all his work.
- 18:11So yeah, Muncie's great. Yeah, man, it's just really
- 18:13exciting. I'm very pumped for this band.
- 18:15I'm. I'm excited for people.
- 18:17I'm excited for people to hear some of the stuff that's not out
- 18:19yet that I've gotten to hear. But.
- 18:21But yeah, man, I can't wait. I like your enthusiasm and it's
- 18:24really great to the energy and the sparkle in your eye when
- 18:26you're talking about this stuff. I can tell how much this means
- 18:29to you and how much you love it, so it's really great to see.
- 18:31Thanks man, I appreciate it. We'll, we'll, I don't know
- 18:34what's to come, but we're looking really forward to it.
- 18:36So just day by day and step by step, you know?
- 18:39That's all you can do. That's all we can all do.
- 18:42Austin back from zero. Thanks for hanging out with
- 18:44Ghost Cult. I really appreciate you, man.
- 18:45And we'll be plug in the record as they say, no problem.
