- 0:00Welcome back to the Deep Dive. Today, we're looking
- 0:02at a single building that's really done something
- 0:04quite unique globally in sustainability. Our
- 0:09mission is to unpack the, well, the record -breaking
- 0:12achievements of the Al -Rayyan Mosque in Hadda.
- 0:15It's championed by Dubai Electricity and Water
- 0:18Authority, and we're focusing on its sustainable
- 0:20design. Yeah, this is a really significant story.
- 0:23What the sources show is a big step forward in
- 0:26urban sustainability. It demonstrates how public
- 0:29buildings, you know, specifically a place of
- 0:31worship here, can set, well, basically a gold
- 0:34standard for environmental design worldwide.
- 0:37And the really grabbing part is just how successful
- 0:39it's been. We're talking three separate world
- 0:41records for environmental leadership from just
- 0:43one site. OK, let's start with the latest one.
- 0:46The big news from November 2025. The Ahran Mosque
- 0:49is the world's first place of worship to get
- 0:50the LD zero carbon certification. That's from
- 0:53the U .S. Green Buildings Council. Right. And
- 0:55lead to zero carbon, it's important to understand,
- 0:57goes way beyond just net zero. It means the building
- 1:00is actively helping the environment recover.
- 1:03In this case, the mosque offsets an incredible
- 1:05175 percent of its annual carbon emissions. 175
- 1:09percent. Wow. Yeah. So it's giving back much
- 1:12more clean energy than it consumes. It really
- 1:14makes it a model for restorative architecture
- 1:17globally. That is genuinely revolutionary. So
- 1:20to understand how they got there, we should probably
- 1:21look back at the earlier records. Good idea.
- 1:24Before zero carbon back in 2024, it was already
- 1:28the world's first religious site to achieve LED
- 1:30zero energy certification. Zero energy. So that
- 1:33means... That means it generated 150 % of its
- 1:36own energy needs, mostly using very efficient
- 1:39solar PV panels. The system they have, the monitoring
- 1:42shows the PV panels have a total capacity of
- 1:45158 kilowatt peak, which is a measure of the
- 1:49maximum output. It's a serious setup. Okay, 158
- 1:52kilowatt peak. Even before that, wasn't there
- 1:53an initial LED rating? Exactly. Back in 2021,
- 1:57it made history as the world's first mosque to
- 2:00get the LED platinum rating for green buildings.
- 2:02That's the LED BD plus CV4 standard. It scored
- 2:0783 points then for its actual design and the
- 2:10materials used in construction. Right. So platinum
- 2:12is about how it's built and then zero energy
- 2:14and zero carbon are about how it performs day
- 2:17to day. That's a perfect way to put it. And that
- 2:19performance comes from smart design choices.
- 2:21Things like advanced heatproof glass, really
- 2:24efficient building facades to cut down energy
- 2:26use dramatically. They also integrated solar
- 2:29-powered water heaters and used materials with
- 2:32a high solar reflectance index, SRI. SRI, that's
- 2:35about reflecting sunlight, right? Keeping the
- 2:37building cooler. Precisely. It reflects the sun's
- 2:39heat, reduces how much the building absorbs,
- 2:42which is critical in places like Hata, cuts down
- 2:44the air conditioning needs significantly. They
- 2:46also maximize... daylight inside to lower electricity
- 2:48consumption for lighting, used recycled construction
- 2:51materials, and installed modern water purification
- 2:54and treatment systems. It really sounds like
- 2:56every detail was considered. And just for context,
- 2:59the building itself covers 1 ,050 square meters.
- 3:02Yes, 1 ,050 square meters. It can hold over 600
- 3:06worshippers. It also has a 25 -meter minaret,
- 3:09accessible facilities, parking, even green chargers
- 3:13for vehicles. It's designed as part of the community.
- 3:15Now, achieving all this, especially those performance
- 3:17certifications, that must require some serious
- 3:20strategic backing. Let's bring in the perspective
- 3:22from the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority
- 3:24leadership. Absolutely. This wasn't accidental.
- 3:27It's clearly part of a larger plan. There's a
- 3:30statement here from His Excellency Saeed Mohammed
- 3:32Altair that really lays out the vision. His Excellency
- 3:35Saeed Mohammed Altair, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity
- 3:39and Water Authority, said, Under the wise directives
- 3:42of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al
- 3:44Nahyan, President of the UAE, and His Highness
- 3:47Sheikh Mohammed bin Rushd Al Maktoum, Vice President
- 3:49and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai,
- 3:51we work to reach a greener future. At Dubai Electricity
- 3:55and Water Authority, we are proud to translate
- 3:57this vision into reality, advancing climate action,
- 3:59sustainable urban development, and the UAE's
- 4:01journey towards net zero. Al Ryan Moss contributes
- 4:04to creating a positive and sustainable impact
- 4:06on the environment, making it a model for sustainable,
- 4:09environmentally friendly buildings. That quote
- 4:12really emphasizes the connection between this
- 4:14specific project and the broader national goals.
- 4:16And there's more on how it fits into the urban
- 4:18strategy. His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al -Tayr
- 4:22added, We are keen to fulfill all our economic,
- 4:32social, and environmental commitments and to
- 4:34support efforts to make Dubai an advanced and
- 4:36sustainable future city that relies on the latest
- 4:39technologies to preserve natural resources, enhance
- 4:41electricity and water efficiency, and improve
- 4:44quality of life. Dubai Electricity and Water
- 4:47Authority is among the first organizations in
- 4:49Dubai to adopt the concept of green buildings.
- 4:52Today, we have 10 green buildings within LEED
- 4:54rating and are committed to increasing the number
- 4:57of sustainable buildings that take into account
- 4:59environmental aspects in their design and are
- 5:01powered by clean and renewable energy. So you
- 5:03see, it connects directly to the Dubai 2040 plan,
- 5:06the HADA development plan. It's reinforcing the
- 5:09UAE's strategic vision for sustainable cities
- 5:11and the big goal. Net zero by 2050. The Al -Rayyan
- 5:16Mosque is really a tangible example, a proof
- 5:18point that this kind of high performance, even
- 5:20restorative building is achievable. Restorative.
- 5:23That word really sticks out. So thinking about
- 5:26the implications, what should this signal to
- 5:29others? I mean, if a place of worship can achieve
- 5:31this standard, offsetting 175 percent of its
- 5:34carbon. Shouldn't we start asking if all new
- 5:37major infrastructure, public and private, could
- 5:40aim for this restorative level? That's the provocative
- 5:42question, isn't it? Moving beyond just less bad
- 5:45to actually doing good. It could completely change
- 5:48how we calculate the value and impact of sustainable
- 5:50building. Yeah. Something for all of us to think
- 5:52about. Thank you for joining us for this deep
- 5:54dive into the world's first LE zero carbon certified
- 5:57place of worship.
