- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: One of the essential themes of the superhero genre is that of the double life.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: When the hero puts on their costume, they're a powerful person who rushes into battle to save lives.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: But in order to conceal their true identity, they usually take on some sort of mild-mannered job or role that's the total opposite of their superhero persona.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Batman is Bruce Wayne, an aloof billionaire playboy.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Sue Storm of the Fantastic Four is a scientist.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Spider-Man is Peter Parker, a nerdy newspaper reporter.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Superman is Clark Kent, another nerdy newspaper reporter.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Wonder Woman is Diana Prince, an ambassador to the United Nations.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: You know, superheroes aren't the only ones who live double lives.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: We writers can develop an alter ego as well if we're not careful.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: It's easy to appear bold and brave on the page, but how do we handle the challenges of real life?
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Are you dealing with your personal problems head on, or are you avoiding them?
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Do you engage in hard conversations about hard things, or do you shut down when you're confronted by someone with a truth that you don't want to hear?
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Would the people who know you best describe you as brave, focused, determined, disciplined, or would they say instead that you're aloof, timid, or maybe even uncaring?
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Well, those are tough words to be sure.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: It's hard to face our real life problems instead of running away from them.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: And it's easy to turn to substance abuse or other unhealthy patterns and addictions and just run away from reality.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Henry David Thoreau said, How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Just because we're writers, it doesn't give us the license to check out of our real lives.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: We've got to show up for real on the stage of life where the action's happening.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: None of us is perfect, but our writing should reflect the person that we're trying to become.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Bold, brave, and above all, a true life superhero to the people we love the most.
