- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. I am you're
- 0:02gonna be your host Tracy and we are gonna be
- 0:05in episode four for this month and there might
- 0:10be a little bonus episode coming next Wednesday.
- 0:14And so as we look through what we've been talking
- 0:17about and so this episode is gonna be about the
- 0:21next Faithful yes obedience and ordinary life
- 0:25and so many believers wait for a dramatic call
- 0:28while overlooking the clear act of obedience
- 0:30that is in front of them and so this episode
- 0:33we're going to be exploring relationships between
- 0:34grace and obedience and why delayed obedience
- 0:37Forms the heart and how God uses small faithful
- 0:41choices to build a life of integrity This invitation
- 0:45is to stop chasing impressive moments and say
- 0:48yes to Jesus today. And so in this episode I'm
- 0:52you're gonna be your host Tracy Foster. Welcome
- 0:54back to fostering faith and we're gonna be walking
- 0:56and talking about obedience I know that word
- 1:00can feel really heavy Some of us hear obedience
- 1:02and immediately think of rules and failures and
- 1:04punishment or someone with authority in a harmful
- 1:07way And so let us begin clearly Christian obedience
- 1:10is not a payment for God's love It is a response
- 1:14to his love and we have Ephesians 2 that says
- 1:17we are saved by grace through faith and not by
- 1:20works. And when it says that we are created in
- 1:23Jesus Christ for good works that God prepared
- 1:25us to do so, grace is the root. Obedience is
- 1:30the fruit. We do not obey so Jesus will rescue
- 1:33us. We obey because in Jesus we have been rescued.
- 1:38And the most important obedience is not dramatic.
- 1:41It looks like telling the truth when a lie would
- 1:43be so much easier. Keeping your word when nobody
- 1:47would know that you didn't. apologizing without
- 1:50explaining why, in a way, the harm. It's refusing
- 1:54to gossip. It's giving generously. It's closing
- 1:57the screen. Making a call. Rusking when pride
- 2:02says your worth depends on producing. And so
- 2:06let's pray. Dear Jesus, thank you so much that
- 2:09we are saved by your grace and held in your love.
- 2:12Show us the next faithful yes. Expose the places
- 2:16where we have been delayed, excused, and renamed
- 2:19disobedient give us the courage to respond not
- 2:23from fear but from trust let me pray this in
- 2:26your name amen and so we often want to map instead
- 2:32of step we ask god for a five -year plan and
- 2:35often gives light to the next step in some 119
- 2:39calls his word a lamp to our feet and light to
- 2:42our path. A lamp does not always illuminate the
- 2:44entire road. It gives us enough light to move
- 2:47faithfully now. And we say, God show us our purpose
- 2:52while ignoring the person he has asked us to
- 2:54forgive. We ask for a platform while neglecting
- 2:57integrity and private. We pray for greater influence
- 3:01while resisting responsibility. That's already
- 3:04in our hands. Calling is not a big assignment
- 3:06attached to your name. Calling is faithfulness
- 3:09to Jesus in a place where your feet are already
- 3:12at today. And so the next faithful yes may feel
- 3:16so small to matter, but small choices from spiritual
- 3:21that it's it forms spiritual muscle. And so every
- 3:25yes teaches your heart that Jesus is trustworthy.
- 3:28Every repeated compromise teaches your heart
- 3:30that his commands are optional. And so Delayed
- 3:36obedience shapes us. And so sometimes we say,
- 3:39I'll obey whenever I understand. But trust often
- 3:42acts before every question is resolved. Abraham
- 3:46went without knowing the full destination. The
- 3:49disciples left their nets without receiving a
- 3:52delayed plan. Peter stepped out of the boat before
- 3:56he knew the whole moment would unfold. This does
- 3:59not mean acting recklessly or calling every impulse
- 4:03faith. That is not what this means Biblical obedience
- 4:06is response to what God is actually revealing
- 4:09and when scripture is clear endless delay is
- 4:13not discernment if God says forgive We do not
- 4:19need another sign if God says speak the truth.
- 4:22We do not feel something special if God says
- 4:26care for the vulnerable, pursue integrity, reject
- 4:29partiality, and love your enemies? The question
- 4:32is not whether the command fits our preferences.
- 4:36The question is whether we trust the one who
- 4:38gave it. Delayed obedience also has a cost. The
- 4:42longer we rehearse an excuse, the more reasonable
- 4:45it sounds. Have you ever said, they do not deserve
- 4:49forgiveness? Everyone talks that way. Is that
- 4:53really gonna hurt someone? I will deal with that
- 4:57when life calms down. But obedience postponed
- 5:02becomes a habit of resistance. And so obedience
- 5:07and wisdom. Not every decision is a direct moral
- 5:10command. Scripture does not tell you which job
- 5:13offer to accept or which town to live in or what
- 5:17exact day to begin a project. Those decisions
- 5:20need wisdom. Wisdom asks, Which choice is consistent
- 5:25with scripture? Which motives is driving me?
- 5:29Which responsibility has God already entrusted
- 5:31me to? What do mature believers see? That I am
- 5:37a missing What option makes rooms for faithfulness?
- 5:42not only excitement and Sometimes two choices
- 5:45are both permissible We become paralyzed because
- 5:49we are searching for a secret answer that God
- 5:52has not promised to reveal. In those moments,
- 5:56we pray, we seek counsel, examine our motives,
- 6:00choose with humility, and trust God is able to
- 6:05direct and surrender our life. God's will is
- 6:09not a tightrope where one imperfect step ruins
- 6:13everything. He is the Father forming children,
- 6:17not a trapped waiting for you to fail. And so
- 6:21obedience is Relational. Is it possible to talk
- 6:24about obedience in the way that sounds mechanical?
- 6:27God gives an order. We complete the task and
- 6:30we move on. Biblical obedience is relational.
- 6:34Jesus says in John 14, if you have loved me,
- 6:37then you will keep my commands. Love does not
- 6:40make obedience unnecessary. Love gives obedience
- 6:42the proper center. So think about the difference
- 6:46between compliance and trust. Compliance ask,
- 6:49what is the minimum that I can do? Trust says
- 6:52what response honors the one who loves me Compliance
- 6:57is mainly concerned with avoiding consequences
- 7:01Trust is concerned with staying close What does
- 7:05that that does not mean that obedience will always
- 7:09feel warm and easy Jesus obeyed through anguish
- 7:12in Gethsemane love can tremble and still say
- 7:16yes trust can ask and have questions and still
- 7:20take the next step. That's why secrecy matters.
- 7:24Sincerity matters. The person we are when nobody
- 7:28is watching reveals what is forming our heart.
- 7:31Private obedience is never may never receive
- 7:34applause, but it builds integrity. The wholeness
- 7:38is being the same person before God, before people
- 7:41and alone. And I tell the kids this all the time,
- 7:45that you should be the same here in church, that
- 7:47you are at school, that you are on the court,
- 7:50that you are on the field. And so I really tried
- 7:53to just be this kind of an integrist person where
- 7:56I am the same in my office, that I am at church,
- 7:58that I am with my friends, and so you're not
- 8:00getting different versions because again, you're
- 8:02putting on different masks. You're putting a
- 8:04mask on at school, you're putting a mask on at
- 8:06your work, you're putting a mask on at your church,
- 8:08and then you forget who you are. And you're like,
- 8:10oh, I was this way and then I'm this way. And
- 8:12then so you're being fake. And that's also super
- 8:15exhaustive. And so if you could just be the same
- 8:17person, no matter where you're at, it's so much
- 8:20more freeing. And that way you can really just
- 8:23what you are shaping and toning up in private
- 8:27will show publicly. And so ask yourself, is there
- 8:34an area where I'm technically complying while
- 8:36my heart is resisting? Is there a place where
- 8:39I'm asking, where I keep asking how close I can
- 8:45get to sin without crossing the line? Jesus is
- 8:48inviting us into more than a rule management.
- 8:51He's inviting us into a wholehearted life with
- 8:54Him and the cost of saying yes. And so obedience
- 8:58can cost comfort, approval, convenience, money,
- 9:03status, or access to a relationship that you
- 9:07wanted to keep. And so Jesus never hid the cost
- 9:10of discipleship. He called people to deny themselves,
- 9:14take up their cross, and follow. The cost of
- 9:17obedience is never the whole story. We also have
- 9:21to count the cost of disobedience. A divided
- 9:25heart, damaged trust, growing numbness, hidden
- 9:29shame, in the distance of life and freedom that
- 9:33God gives. And so... and when I was doing my
- 9:36video, it was just like, if you don't understand
- 9:38Deuteronomy 28, and so disobedience equals judgment,
- 9:44obedience equals blessings, and so go back and
- 9:46read Deuteronomy 28, and then you can really
- 9:48see how it shapes the whole New Testament. And
- 9:52so really, if you are walking in disobedience,
- 9:54you're gonna have consequences. If you're walking
- 9:57in obedience, you're gonna have blessings, and
- 9:59so that really is the whole, the thing. So the
- 10:03rich young ruler walked away sad because his
- 10:06possessions possessed him Jesus loves him enough
- 10:09to name the one thing that he would never surrender
- 10:12the command exposes the location of his trust
- 10:15and what command of Jesus feels threatened you
- 10:18right now and so what place may reveal what you
- 10:22are afraid to lose and so be zians is there in
- 10:26a way Jesus saying Jesus you are better than
- 10:29what I am holding and so Whenever you have failed,
- 10:34maybe the spirit is bringing something to mind
- 10:36and shame is already arising remember July what
- 10:40we said about that and so Conviction and condemnation
- 10:44are not the same thing conviction is specifically
- 10:47and leads us toward the confection and restoration
- 10:50Condemnation is vague crushing and tells us to
- 10:53hide and so first John 1 9 says that if we confess
- 10:56our sins God is faithful and righteous to forgive
- 11:00and cleanse us. Confession agrees with God about
- 11:03sin. Repentance turns around. Grace does not
- 11:07pretend failure was harmful. Grace meets us in
- 11:10the truth and leads us home. Jesus denied Jesus
- 11:14three times after the resurrection. Jesus restores
- 11:17him and gives him a responsibility. Failure was
- 11:20part of Peter's story, but was not the end of
- 11:23his calling. And our next faithful yes may be
- 11:27the beginning with a confession. We do not wait
- 11:30until we feel worthy because Jesus is merciful.
- 11:35And so let me say that again. And so our faithful
- 11:37yes may begin with a confession. What's on your
- 11:40heart? Do not wait till we feel worthy. Because
- 11:44how can a holy God just be in the presence of
- 11:47us sinners? And so we don't feel worthy most
- 11:51of the time. And then come because Jesus is merciful.
- 11:55And so restoration may also include repair. If
- 11:59your disobedience harms someone, confession to
- 12:01God does not remove the need for you to take
- 12:03responsibility with that person when it is safe
- 12:07and appropriate. A real apology does not say,
- 12:10I'm sorry you felt that way. It names what happened,
- 12:15acknowledges the harm, avoids excuses, and asks
- 12:18what repair may be possible. And so repentance
- 12:22is not proven by dramatic emotion. It is not
- 12:24demonstrated by a change direction. Zacchaeus
- 12:28did not only feel bad about the exploitation,
- 12:34he made a resolution. The fruit did not purchase
- 12:36forgiveness. It showed that the grace had reached
- 12:39his choices. And so this may be a consequence.
- 12:43that you cannot erase grace is not a promise
- 12:46that every earthly consequence disappears grace
- 12:49is the promise that failure does not have to
- 12:51become your identity that is in christ a new
- 12:55direction if possible and so the 24 hour yes
- 13:01and so this week's practice ask god what is one
- 13:05clear act of obedience you are placing in front
- 13:08of me and write it down make it specific enough
- 13:11to complete it within 24 hours Not be more loving
- 13:16and said what I call an apologize without defending
- 13:20myself Not read more of the Bible and said tomorrow
- 13:24at seven. I will read mark one slowly and write
- 13:28one response Not be generous Instead I will give
- 13:34this amount to meet this need not set boundaries
- 13:39Instead, I will communicate a limit clearly and
- 13:42kindly today. And then act. Emotion can follow
- 13:46obedience rather than precede it. Courage is
- 13:49not always a feeling that arrives before a step.
- 13:53Sometimes courage is a step. And so ask, what
- 13:57clear command have I delayed? What excuse have
- 14:01I repeated? What am I afraid of obedience that
- 14:04will cost? And what is my 24 -hour yes? And so
- 14:09let's pray. Jesus, you obeyed your father fully,
- 14:13even at the cross. Through your obedience, we
- 14:16receive grace we could never earn. Forgive us
- 14:19for our delayed obedience and hidden compromise.
- 14:22Make us faithful in private and in public, in
- 14:25small choices and costly ones. Give us wisdom
- 14:28when scripture leaves room for a choice and courage
- 14:31where your command is clear. When we have failed,
- 14:34lead us quickly into confession and restoration.
- 14:37Let our yes, come from love and not from obligation.
- 14:41And we pray this in Jesus' name. Amen. And so
- 14:44in this episode, if it challenged you, save it
- 14:48and respond to it. Write down your next faithful
- 14:52yes and take that step. And so if this feels
