Latest / Oh And One More Thing / EP31 - Man-o-pause: It's a real issue
Transcript
- 0:35Hey, I am Rob. Welcome.
- 0:36One more thing. We are so glad you're here.
- 0:38Hey, I'm Brian. Another episode.
- 0:41And what are we going to get ourselves into this week?
- 0:43Trouble. Remember when we used to ask
- 0:45that question and it meant adventure, right?
- 0:47And now it just means what joint is going to pop first you.
- 0:52Got 1. But it's true.
- 0:55It's funny. I know.
- 0:57Right. Or when you get to a certain
- 0:58age, like 5055 sixty and you finally learn some patience.
- 1:01Mostly because we can't remember what we were mad about in the
- 1:031st place, right? Isn't aging fun?
- 1:07No. It's not.
- 1:08It sucks. But you know, ever since we've
- 1:11been doing this podcast, I've learned more about different
- 1:14subjects than I ever planned to. It's really crazy.
- 1:17Yeah. You know, and it's funny because
- 1:18we started this just to honestly get together and hang out and
- 1:20just kind of shoot the shit and because we think we're funny,
- 1:23right? I know, quite funny to me.
- 1:26Right. But yeah, I mean, it's it's
- 1:28crazy some of the topics that and okay, let's be 100% honest
- 1:32that you've come up with. Thank you, Rob.
- 1:34Absolutely. I've honestly been fascinated by
- 1:37some of the stuff that that we mean you have uncovered.
- 1:41In the research. But it that's all, all part of
- 1:43it, you know, you try to come up with something new and look, I
- 1:45want to learn something every time we do a podcast.
- 1:47Yeah. And so all these subjects are
- 1:49things like I've thought I've wanted to learn a little bit
- 1:52about and kind of develops into some kind of conversation
- 1:55between us. Right.
- 1:55Exactly. Which is kind of.
- 1:56Cool. Yeah, Every day I become a
- 1:58little bit more like Cliff Klavan.
- 2:01And for those of you who don't know, Cliff Clavin is.
- 2:03That's the problem. Right, right.
- 2:05Great show. Cheers.
- 2:06Right. Everybody should know who Cliff
- 2:08Clavin is. That's right, yeah.
- 2:10So on that topic of learning new things, yes Sir, have you ever
- 2:13heard the thing called menopause?
- 2:15You know the the male version of female menopause.
- 2:17OK, well yes, obviously I've heard of it, but it's a complete
- 2:20conspiracy theory and it's not true.
- 2:22So yeah, you're right. I always thought it was a joke,
- 2:24but is it real? Yeah, no, it can't be.
- 2:26It's women getting back at us for years and years and years of
- 2:28PMS jokes, right? Right.
- 2:32But have you felt any changes in your body when you get older?
- 2:34Oh, absolutely. Like slower.
- 2:36Oh yeah, more tired, yes. Aches and pains creaking of the
- 2:39knees. God every day.
- 2:40Isn't that just getting older? It's just getting right.
- 2:42It's not, apparently. It's like it's.
- 2:44No. Well, apparently it's a real
- 2:46thing. OK, sort of, sort of.
- 2:47So my friend Robin gave me this idea to talk about it on the
- 2:50podcast. So thank you Robin.
- 2:51Look for your free T-shirt. We appreciate the topic.
- 2:54Absolutely. We love topics.
- 2:55Menopause, which is more accurately known as andropause
- 2:59or late onset hydrogonadism. You did not just say that.
- 3:04I know, right? No, that's that's really out
- 3:07there. That's what it's called,
- 3:08hypergonadism. That's the actual definition of
- 3:10the term. Yes.
- 3:12We're going to say andropause from now on through this thing,
- 3:15but but it refers to a gradual age-related decline in male
- 3:19hormone levels, especially testosterone.
- 3:21OK, although it's sometimes compared to female menopause,
- 3:25the two conditions are not the same, all right?
- 3:28Men do not experience an abrupt or complete shutdown of
- 3:32reproductive hormones that women do.
- 3:35Instead, testosterone levels decline slowly over time.
- 3:38OK, so is that what does that have to do with like my balding
- 3:40head I. Don't think it has anything to
- 3:42do with your hair. Hair loss is completely
- 3:44different than low T. Male pattern baldness has
- 3:46nothing to do with testosterone. Wait, wait, I didn't look that
- 3:50up. But if you'd like me to research
- 3:52that, we can have a whole podcast on and your head.
- 3:56Male batter. Bone is right.
- 3:58Thank you. So, but some symptoms of low
- 4:01testosterone are decreased muscle mass and strength.
- 4:05Check increased body fat, especially around the abdomen.
- 4:08Bubble check. Check.
- 4:10Reduced energy and fatigue. Check.
- 4:14Reduce sex drive and erectile dysfunction.
- 4:16Why would you put that on the atmosphere?
- 4:17Oh no. Right.
- 4:19Bone loss and osteoporosis? Not yet really think.
- 4:23That's that's the thing for guys.
- 4:24I guess so. OK.
- 4:25And hot flashes. And night sweats.
- 4:27Oh, that's that's no, that's not true.
- 4:29Well, come on, I believe everything on the Internet.
- 4:31Rob Well, last night I woke up at 2:00 AM 'cause I was sweating
- 4:34so. It's not true.
- 4:35It's not. True at all for you, right?
- 4:37It's not you sweat at night, no. Never, never, never, never.
- 4:41Never. I just get up at 2:00 AM to pee.
- 4:43He, I'm, I'm, I'm not at that point yet.
- 4:45I can usually make it through the night, but yeah I've been
- 4:47waking up a lot more at like 2-3 AM with weird things.
- 4:49But at least I'm waking up. Yes, is a win I'll.
- 4:55Give you that I don't want to have to wear depends.
- 4:56Yeah, right. OK.
- 5:01So how testosterone changes with age?
- 5:03So due to my extensive research, thank you, Brian.
- 5:06Yes, you're welcome, right. Here, research consistently
- 5:09shows that testosterone begins to decrease around ages 30 to
- 5:1240. I didn't realize it was that.
- 5:13Early. That's early, right?
- 5:14That's early. That's.
- 5:15What I thought too, when I when I read that, I'm like, OK,
- 5:17that's earlier than I expected. Yeah, I was thinking like 50-60,
- 5:20like our age right now. Yeah, my my young age of 60.
- 5:24That's right. Yeah.
- 5:25So that's typically at about a rate of 1% per year.
- 5:28OK. So not much, not much.
- 5:29A large observation of 20 23 study of more than 2600 men aged
- 5:3420 to 44 found an average yearly decline of approximately 0.14
- 5:39nmol slash L What the hell does that mean in total testosterone
- 5:42levels? I think we'll tell you right
- 5:44here. Tell you right here, nmol slash
- 5:46L stands for nanomoles per liter, which is unit of
- 5:49concentration used in medical tests to measure the amount of a
- 5:52specific substance in a liter. Fluid.
- 5:54OK, so that's like way over my head.
- 5:57So when when I was researching writing that and I saw those
- 6:00those matters, I'm like, what the heck does that mean?
- 6:02Yeah. So I had to look it up.
- 6:03OK. Which is like wow now.
- 6:06I'll never forget it. Right, right.
- 6:08Exactly. But I'm curious on like the
- 6:11yearly decline, like I guess what what what is a what is a
- 6:13baseline of level that it should be?
- 6:17OK, how about we further into this podcast and I'll tell you.
- 6:22Hey, that's what happens, Rob, when you don't do research.
- 6:25Or read ahead. Or read ahead.
- 6:27I read ahead as far as you know. OK, All right.
- 6:30So similarly, reviews published in Frontiers and Aging and the
- 6:34Journal of Gerontology confirm that a man's age in the 60s to
- 6:3880s, Many men have testosterone concentrations below the normal
- 6:42range of younger adults. OK, So that 60s to 80s, that's
- 6:46the. Part that I kind.
- 6:47Of so I'm just starting to decline, right, right.
- 6:50I I well, no, clearly you're not, but thank you.
- 6:53Yes, but you've, you've got a couple years.
- 6:55However, the degree of decline varies significantly among
- 6:58individuals. Ageing alone doesn't fully
- 7:01explain hormonal decline. Factors like obesity, diabetes,
- 7:04chronic illness and poor sleep all play major roles.
- 7:08Oh man, so not looking good for our older years.
- 7:10So all four of those we have. Right.
- 7:15Exactly what are we gonna do? I know what we're.
- 7:16Gonna do. We're gonna listen to an ad.
- 7:17That's what we're gonna do, OK? Hey, Brian.
- 7:24Hey, Rob. We all know that spring green
- 7:27fertilizes our lawn and. Sprays for weeds.
- 7:29And it looks fantastic. Did you also know they offer a
- 7:32bunch of other services? Like making mosquitoes go away.
- 7:34We love our mosquito free yard, especially in Minnesota.
- 7:37You know mosquitoes are the official state bird, right?
- 7:40I'm fairly certain it's saloon, but yes, no mosquitoes rot.
- 7:43Rock. And liquid aerations, rock and
- 7:46mechanical aerations, and overseeding and lawn insect
- 7:48control. Oh my.
- 7:50And. Don't forget about the total
- 7:52home pest and rodent control. That's right, my house is mouse
- 7:55free. See what Spring Green can do for
- 7:57you at springdashgreen.com. For a personalized quote
- 8:00specific to your property, that's Spring dashgreen.com.
- 8:03And tell them. Oh, and one more thing, don't
- 8:05you? OK, Brian, So what are the key
- 8:09differences between male and pause and female menopause?
- 8:13Well Rob, I'm so glad you asked. It's not like I didn't have this
- 8:17prepared already or anything. So hormone will change.
- 8:21In women, menopause results from a rapid, well defined drop in
- 8:25estrogen or progesterone, making the end of menstruation and
- 8:29fertility. For men, the decline in
- 8:32testosterone is gradual and continuous, beginning in midlife
- 8:36and progressing slowly. Some men maintain normal hormone
- 8:39levels well into their 70s and beyond, while others experience
- 8:43a faster decline depending on lifestyle and some other health
- 8:46factors. OK, so biological process.
- 8:49Menopause represents a clear biological milestone.
- 8:52Once it occurs, woman can no longer conceive naturally.
- 8:55That makes sense, right? Anthropause, by contrast, it's a
- 8:58gradual physiological transition rather than a distinct event.
- 9:02Men typically remain fertile even with a lower testosterone
- 9:04level. The sexual function and sperm
- 9:07quality may decline. Aw, that doesn't sound good.
- 9:10I guess I'm not going to have any more kids though.
- 9:12Yeah, right. The symptoms of andropause arise
- 9:14from the cumulative effect of reduced testosterone.
- 9:17It can affect physical, emotional and cognitive
- 9:20well-being, including persistent fatigue and low energy.
- 9:24Oh my gosh. My.
- 9:25Gosh, right. That sounds normal.
- 9:27Reduce the beetle and various forms of sexual dysfunction,
- 9:30including erectile difficulties. Oh crap, buddy likes bad bad.
- 9:40So the next one is loss of muscle mass and strength with
- 9:43increased body fat. OK, that brings up a question
- 9:46that actually saw this on the news a couple nights ago about
- 9:50protein. Yeah.
- 9:51You know how there's such a huge push everything has?
- 9:53Protein. Everything has protein.
- 9:54Protein. Protein drinks, protein powder,
- 9:56protein cereal protein. Everything's protein, right?
- 9:59So that does that play into the loss of muscle mass and
- 10:01strength, will do more protein offset that, I wonder?
- 10:04I wonder, I'm sure because extra protein in your body does help
- 10:08build the muscles. So maybe you're going to
- 10:10counteract a little bit of the low T, Yeah, with more protein,
- 10:13but I don't know. Yeah, because the story they
- 10:15actually did was talking more about, you know, losing weight
- 10:17and you have to supplement protein, but you don't want to
- 10:20lose the muscle mass. So you can't just just drink
- 10:22protein shakes and then hope you're going to be fine.
- 10:23You still have to exercise and do all the right things, but it
- 10:26helps with hair growth and skin condition and all that good
- 10:30stuff to you. So cool.
- 10:31No sorry sorry, total tangent. But anyway.
- 10:33All right, well. We like tangent, all right.
- 10:36All right, next one, mood swings.
- 10:37Oh, yeah, that's true. Irritability and symptoms of
- 10:40depression or anxiety. OK, so.
- 10:42That's sad. Sadly, sadly I felt those
- 10:44already. OK, so the next one is cognitive
- 10:47issues such as difficulty concentrating or memory loss.
- 10:50What? What did?
- 10:52You say? Something I have no idea what
- 10:54we're talking, we talking about. I know frequently that happens
- 10:57to me a lot. I don't know what I'm talking
- 10:58about halfway through what I'm talking about.
- 11:00OK, that's not just when your wife asks you a question.
- 11:02That's a general to everybody. No, no, it's not.
- 11:06It's the way I treat you too. Just say.
- 11:09Seems far for the course better who I'm?
- 11:11Talking to but. Alright.
- 11:12And the last one, sleep disturbances including insomnia
- 11:15or non restorative sleep. Oh gosh, this is really
- 11:19explaining why I'm feeling sort of off all the time.
- 11:22I have a lot of these symptoms. Yeah.
- 11:24OK. So you're making me a little bit
- 11:25nervous for you. Well, get older, Kate.
- 11:27You're not. Yeah.
- 11:29I'm not that much older than you.
- 11:30You're. Not but.
- 11:32OK. But it's interesting to see all
- 11:34this stuff written down here, one or the other, and you start
- 11:36thinking and checking the box like, oh, I do that.
- 11:38Oh, I do that. Oh, crap, I do that.
- 11:40Right. You know, and it's not blown out
- 11:42of proportion. You know, there's a little bit
- 11:44at a time. It's just probably why you don't
- 11:45realize it's happening. Well, it's a little bit of time.
- 11:48And each one on their own is probably like, yeah, just
- 11:50whatever it is, what it is. But then you're right.
- 11:51As you compile them and start looking at them, you're like,
- 11:53yeah. Oh crap.
- 11:54Crap. So, you know, writing this and
- 11:56just what we're talking about earlier is the fact that we're
- 11:58learning all these things. It's like, I see all this
- 12:01information now back-to-back to back-to-back.
- 12:03And I'm like, Oh my gosh, yeah, that is way more progress than I
- 12:08thought it was, you know, thinking, oh, I was just tired,
- 12:10right? Or I didn't sleep well.
- 12:12But you realize some of these things are happening with each
- 12:14other, right? And.
- 12:15Crazy. And more often than you're used
- 12:17to, right, They're increasing over time.
- 12:19Oh my gosh. Here we are, OK.
- 12:21So here's some research that I found.
- 12:23OK. In a cross a sectional study of
- 12:25men from 40 to 60 in 2009, approximately 67.5% reported
- 12:30symptoms consistent with andropause.
- 12:33So that makes sense, right? That's why I'm feeling that way,
- 12:35though only about 1/3 had clinically low T levels.
- 12:40Likewise, other studies of men from 40 to 85 in 2018 found the
- 12:45symptoms severity correlated strongly with low quality of
- 12:49life. So even when hormone levels
- 12:51remain within normal limits, these findings suggest that
- 12:54subjective symptoms may appear before biochemical changes are
- 12:58measurable. Whoo, that's a lot.
- 13:00OK. So but.
- 13:01What does that really mean? So that means like, you know,
- 13:04there are decline in some men and there's not decline in other
- 13:07men. And it's based on subjectivity.
- 13:10So whatever you might have else happening in your life.
- 13:13Maybe. Maybe so.
- 13:14I what's what's funny though, is as we're going through this and
- 13:16the more we're getting into it, I was kind of half joking, half
- 13:18serious at the beginning when I said yeah, menopause isn't real.
- 13:21Whatever, dude. Yeah, right.
- 13:22You're. Just what you're finding crap on
- 13:24the Internet and making it up. But as you're, as you're reading
- 13:26through this, I'm like, oh shit, yeah.
- 13:29I think like the word menopause was made-up, of course, because
- 13:32on a little bit of it because of menopause, right?
- 13:34But I mean, it is a real thing. Andropause.
- 13:37Yeah, but what was the other word?
- 13:40I told you I can't say it without laughing times.
- 13:43I can't even say it anymore. So alright, so we have a short
- 13:45list of age specific normal testosterone levels.
- 13:48So if you're 19 to 39. So if you're under 40, 264 to
- 13:51960 nanograms per deciliter, that's Ng slash DL OK, 40 to
- 13:5659215 to 878. So probably about what, 10%
- 14:00lower? That's a really big span.
- 14:02It's a. Big span, but yeah, it's about
- 14:0410% lower and then 60 to 79196 to 859, so another 10% lower.
- 14:09OK so I looked all over in my health records to find like what
- 14:13my testosterone level was. Couldn't find it.
- 14:15OK so I wanted to compare to this but I couldn't figure it
- 14:18out so I'm gonna have to wait till I go to the doctor and and
- 14:20get it checked. So it's probably not a typical
- 14:22thing they test. For.
- 14:24I think you have to. Ask you.
- 14:25Have to ask for that. So that's interesting though is
- 14:27like once you hit like age 50 or age 60, why would that not, if
- 14:31it's such a big deal as it seems to be as we're reading through
- 14:33it, why would that not be a? Standardized, I don't know,
- 14:35physical test maybe do blood? Work.
- 14:36I just turned 60. Maybe it is a standard coming
- 14:38up, yeah. But I think that's a great
- 14:40question to ask. Right, I'll write that down for
- 14:41my doctor. Yeah, Rob.
- 14:43Just be sure how you ask that so they called it correctly so it
- 14:45falls into your physical and not into something else that's going
- 14:47to cost you $1000. What happened, Rob?
- 14:50Well I went to go get a physical not that long ago and I asked
- 14:53him a question. I decided another topic.
- 14:54It was literally 30 seconds worth and how he coded it cost
- 14:57me $300. OK.
- 14:59Because that wasn't included as part of the.
- 15:00Physical. And it shouldn't have been coded
- 15:01that way, you're saying? Well, not.
- 15:03No. I see.
- 15:04I didn't fight it because I didn't disagree, because we had
- 15:06the conversation. It answered my question.
- 15:07Yeah. It gave clarity to what I was
- 15:09looking for. But in my mind at the time, I'm
- 15:11like, well, I'm at a physical. I'm just gonna ask you the
- 15:13question while I'm here. Right, It makes sense, right?
- 15:15Because they used to be able to answer everything.
- 15:17They answer there right? And now they have to code
- 15:19everything they talk about very specifically and it tells you
- 15:22where it does and does not fall within your insurance.
- 15:24Guidelines and you get separate. Billing.
- 15:26OK, those it's crazy. So now I self diagnose on the
- 15:29Internet which is. Always a great idea.
- 15:33It's a great idea 'cause then I save myself money my.
- 15:35God, you also like Google yourself too, don't you?
- 15:37And see, right then, you're one of those guys, aren't you?
- 15:39I have googled myself. Yes, you have.
- 15:42You should try it, it's very interesting.
- 15:43Yeah. Yeah, well, see, I have a lawn
- 15:45care company in my in with my name all over it, so if I Google
- 15:47myself, I just come up this spring green.
- 15:49Yeah, yeah, I come up as an artist.
- 15:51Yeah, so that's legit. It is legit.
- 15:53And just don't come off on some nefarious website that you
- 15:55shouldn't be on. Too legit quick.
- 15:57Exactly. Go hammer.
- 15:59All right. So.
- 16:00It's kind of depressing. It's important to note that
- 16:02these are just general guidelines and individual
- 16:04testosterone levels may vary, so again, don't diagnose yourself.
- 16:08No, don't go to the Internet and figure it out.
- 16:10Right. If you have concerns about your
- 16:11testosterone levels, it is recommended to consult with a
- 16:13healthcare professional for evaluation and advice.
- 16:16Definitely don't listen to a couple guys on a podcast.
- 16:18Except we're going to the doctor, right?
- 16:20Do listen to us. There, yes.
- 16:22Yes, go to the. Doctor and get yourself tested.
- 16:24Yes. You want actual results,
- 16:25definitely talk to your doctor. So yeah.
- 16:26Yeah, so you can find where. Your levels.
- 16:27Are exactly. But this is still a little
- 16:29depressing. Why do we keep talking about
- 16:31things like this, Brian? Because why?
- 16:33Knowledge is power. Yes it is.
- 16:36Yes it is. I agree.
- 16:37We keep learning, keeps our minds sharp.
- 16:39That's right. That's right.
- 16:40And I need more of that than you do.
- 16:43But because the signs of andropods overlap with other
- 16:46health issues, proper diagnosis is crucial.
- 16:48Yes, it is. So consulted healthcare provider
- 16:51like we said. Symptoms like fatigue and low
- 16:53libido can also stem from stress, poor sleep, thyroid
- 16:57disease or diabetes. So let me ask you a question.
- 17:00OK, So if you watch any sort of sporting event, I know you're
- 17:04not a big sports, I do so you may not I love.
- 17:06Sports, Rob. No, you don't.
- 17:08There's always not many now but like 5-10 years ago.
- 17:11Like you can get away from an erectile dysfunction commercial,
- 17:13right? Well, it depends.
- 17:14Yes, you're right. Especially on sports 'cause
- 17:16that's many when guys watch and the couple sitting in the
- 17:18bathtub holding hands looking. At the sunset, I've seen that
- 17:21well, right, OK, right. But I wonder now that we're
- 17:24talking through all this and The Simpsons, like Lola Beato keeps
- 17:27coming up a lot, I wonder if that's how people have been self
- 17:30diagnosing and just, you know, going after the little blue pill
- 17:33and not actually talk to their healthcare professional.
- 17:34But what's really going on? It certainly could be.
- 17:37Like is that a stop? Gap, but it is also a symptom of
- 17:40age. Oh, absolutely.
- 17:41It is and you know, we're we are mostly me getting into.
- 17:44That age group, right? So I asked my doctor.
- 17:47That's not going to tell you the.
- 17:48Result. Well, no, I don't want to know
- 17:49that HIPAA and all that crap, but yes.
- 17:52But yeah, that, that, I don't know why they made me think of
- 17:54that, but like that, that has to be why those are doing so well.
- 17:57Probably. All right #2 get tested.
- 17:59Blood tests measuring total and free testosterone can help
- 18:03identify whether hormone levels are low.
- 18:05Tests are typically done in the morning when your testosterone
- 18:07peaks. So that's when you get the most
- 18:09energy in the morning, right? Right, exactly so #3 Assessed
- 18:12contributing factors. Lifestyle, medications and
- 18:15underlying medical conditions often influence hormone levels
- 18:18and symptoms. Can you ask a question you may
- 18:21not have researched but do you think alcohol plays a role in
- 18:24this? So none of the research that I
- 18:25found correlated to alcohol. OK, so I don't know that, but we
- 18:31do have another podcast coming up where alcohol does play
- 18:35against your liver and we'll talk about that later.
- 18:37Oh, I like that. OK, nice.
- 18:39So OK, here, let's talk about some treatment options.
- 18:41Since we were all depressed about all the things that can go
- 18:43wrong just now, let's talk about treatment.
- 18:45How can we fix? It all right so #1 lifestyle
- 18:48modification so lifestyle changes are often the 1st and
- 18:50most effective first step. Regular exercise, weight
- 18:53control, balance, nutrition, and adequate sleep have all been to
- 18:57boost testosterone levels naturally.
- 18:59So, for instance, studies have demonstrated that obesity and
- 19:02metabolic syndrome significantly lower testosterone, while weight
- 19:05loss and resistance training can raise it.
- 19:08Oh. Crap, so I got to start going to
- 19:10the gym. I think you start with like
- 19:12walking out to mailbox like every day that.
- 19:13Well, I walk to the mailbox couple times a week.
- 19:16Take take the long waiting mailbox for on the block.
- 19:19That might help. Yeah, but all those things like
- 19:21I can do those things and I just haven't.
- 19:24So. You know what?
- 19:25It's bad. You know what I love to do,
- 19:26which I haven't done since last spring.
- 19:27What's that? Shadowbox.
- 19:29Oh, you used? To do that a lot, you talked
- 19:30about it earlier. My VR boxing yeah I love that
- 19:32I'm it's winter now so I'm going to get back into it I love it I
- 19:35have so much fun you. Sweaty ball I'm.
- 19:37Sweaty little pig. OK #2 Testosterone replacement
- 19:40therapy or TRT. In case your testosterone is
- 19:43persistently low and symptoms are significant, testosterone
- 19:47replacement therapy may be considered.
- 19:49Clinical trials suggest that TRT can improve muscle mass, libido,
- 19:54mood, and energy levels in men with documented testosterone
- 19:58deficiency. This is very interesting.
- 20:02Interesting, interesting. All the things that I would like
- 20:04to increase, right? So a 14 week study in diabetic
- 20:07men with low testosterone showed improved aging male symptom
- 20:11scores following therapy. Now the six month study found
- 20:14that testosterone levels rose from 2:40 to nearly 5, 580,
- 20:18leading to enhanced sexual desire and vitality.
- 20:20And if you're like me, the NGDL on there means nanograms per
- 20:23deciliter. I remember that I can't remember
- 20:26that I. Remember that from earlier, I'm
- 20:28lying. I did not ignore it.
- 20:29However, reviews emphasize that long term safety remains under
- 20:33investigation, particularly regarding cardiovascular and
- 20:36prostate health. TRT should always be prescribed
- 20:38and monitored by a qualified health care provider.
- 20:41OK, so you're saying I got it with the doctor, go to the
- 20:43doctor. So that's important.
- 20:44That's important. But there is a silver lining
- 20:47that these these things could. Help.
- 20:49It could help. Oh, absolutely.
- 20:50Yeah, absolutely. So that's a good thing, right?
- 20:52Yeah. It's important to note that
- 20:53testosterone levels are influenced by more than just
- 20:57age. Conditions like obesity,
- 20:59diabetes, chronic illness, alcohol use.
- 21:02There it is. There it is.
- 21:03Alcohol use and certain medications, especially opioids
- 21:07and oh, this is a tough one, anticonvulsants.
- 21:10Oh dude, you nailed. It.
- 21:11Thanks I. Worked hard at that.
- 21:12Right and accelerated can accelerate hormonal decline.
- 21:18A2024 review in Frontiers in Aging highlighted that lifestyle
- 21:23and metabolic factors often contribute more to reduced
- 21:26testosterone than chronological age itself.
- 21:30OK. So interesting, right?
- 21:31Yeah. So additionally, a meta analysis
- 21:34published in 2021 found no consistent link between natural
- 21:37testosterone levels and overall mortality or cardiovascular
- 21:40deaths, suggesting that lower testosterone levels may
- 21:43sometimes reflect underlying illness rather than 'cause it.
- 21:46OK. Well, that's no, I don't know,
- 21:48maybe that's good. That's good here.
- 21:50Sounds OK. Here's my question though.
- 21:52OK, is it as simple as going to the doctor and getting
- 21:55prescribed a pill? Well, I don't know.
- 21:57I don't, I don't know what hormone replacement therapy is,
- 22:01if it's shots or what is it. I don't know, but that's for you
- 22:04and your doctor to decide. I wonder if there's like there's
- 22:07because not to go into too much detail about just the women in
- 22:11general, my life that I know that are our age that I'm not
- 22:14talking about my wife, by the way.
- 22:16Very clear. I was wondering where you're
- 22:17gonna. Go that, but but if you walked
- 22:19on the pharmacy aisle or this the vitamin aisle at your local
- 22:21target grocery store or Costco, whatever, there's a ton of
- 22:26things to help with with, you know, hair loss and skin and
- 22:30blah blah blah for women, all these things to estrogen pills
- 22:33and blah blah blah are their testosterone type pills like
- 22:36that you could start with to try.
- 22:37Honestly, I've never looked so I have no idea.
- 22:39I. Think there are because you can
- 22:40get them on hims calm. Oh OK, so you can get some
- 22:43testosterone, I don't know if it's shots or pills on that
- 22:47website, but they they advertise it a lot on streaming services.
- 22:51But technically you're also talking about the healthcare
- 22:53professional if you're on a website such as that.
- 22:55Yeah. You're talking to their health.
- 22:57Exactly. Yeah.
- 22:58So my, I'm more curious if it's possible for me to go pick up a
- 23:01jug of testosterone pills or something like that.
- 23:03I. Don't think you can.
- 23:04Like, yeah, you can't get into that target.
- 23:05Yeah, that I'm aware of, right. Yeah, I don't know.
- 23:08Yeah, me neither. Yeah, me neither.
- 23:09I have No. Idea.
- 23:09I'm going there after this, so I'll let you know.
- 23:12Text me when you get there, OK? Well, andropause shares some
- 23:17surface similarities with menopause.
- 23:19It represents A gradual and individual hormonal transition,
- 23:23not a sudden event. Multiple large studies confirm
- 23:26that testosterone levels in men begin to decline in midlife like
- 23:30we talked about, influenced by genetics, lifestyle and health
- 23:33conditions. So I didn't realize genetics
- 23:36also plays into that. Fine.
- 23:38Yeah, that's interesting. So it depends on kind of your
- 23:41family too. Right.
- 23:42If if, where that might have if you saw a decline in your father
- 23:46and your grandfather, yeah, you know, you might be prone to be
- 23:49having low T. Right.
- 23:51Yeah, well, like, like my dad has colon cancer and that means
- 23:53I get to go get the colonoscopy every five years now instead of
- 23:55every 10. Right.
- 23:56And you better. Do that.
- 23:57Thanks, Dad. Well, my dad had prostate
- 24:02cancer, so I get. Ready to get that checked out?
- 24:04Yep, good times, good times. Men experiencing symptoms such
- 24:08as low energy, mood changes, or sexual difficulty should seek
- 24:11medical evaluation to identify the cause and explore
- 24:14appropriate treatment ranging from lifestyle optimization to
- 24:16hormone therapy. Ultimately, though, maintaining
- 24:19the healthy lifestyle, managing chronic conditions, and seeking
- 24:22professional care remain the most effective ways to manage
- 24:24enterprise and promote well-being through aging.
- 24:27Yes, I know we've said this a couple of Times Now, but we just
- 24:30want to kind of hit home that if you feel these things, you
- 24:33really got to get checked out. Yep, absolutely.
- 24:35Talk to your doctor. Right.
- 24:36OK, so I got to admit that was cool.
- 24:38Yeah, more stuff than I've ever. Oh yeah.
- 24:41I knew like nothing about any of this which you would think that
- 24:44I I should or at least take the time to look into it, but.
- 24:47That's what's so great about this podcast with you and me.
- 24:50Yeah. It's that we're discovering new
- 24:52things. And it's not only talking to my
- 24:54buddy. Yeah, you know, it's talking
- 24:56about things. And it is truly the Cliff Clavin
- 24:58of what we're doing is we're learning something new that hey,
- 25:02come to the next the next trivia podcast.
- 25:04We're going to be rock stars, you know, we're going to go to
- 25:07bar trivia and we're going to kill it.
- 25:09Kill it, Yes. I love the fact that, I mean, a
- 25:12couple episodes at the end of last year, we did like we did
- 25:15one on game shows, which was fun, right?
- 25:17And we had our first guest of the year, we had Kevin talking
- 25:19about his back, his back. I was growing up as a
- 25:21choreographer and now we're talking about something like
- 25:23this. I just love that we have such a
- 25:25different variety that we find in this.
- 25:27It's kind of fun. Seinfeld of of podcasts, right?
- 25:30It's always something different. There's no.
- 25:32The only real theme we've got is the fact that, you know, our
- 25:35title. One More Thing allows us to
- 25:37continually talk about One More Thing.
- 25:39Yeah. Which I think is the coolest
- 25:41idea. I do I love.
- 25:42It so we. Can really break into lots of
- 25:44different topics and genres and that we haven't even tapped into
- 25:47yet, right? And I'm excited.
- 25:48About that. I'm super excited and.
- 25:50Now it keeps me, hopefully keeps us fresh.
- 25:52Yeah, and. You know what helped a ton?
- 25:53What if? Everyone would please follow us
- 25:56on the socials at Owen One More Thing Pod and Facebook and

- 26:15So if you're interested, shoot us an e-mail.
- 26:17Oh, and one more thing, Rob. What's that?
- 26:21Low testosterone is not like a bad Wi-Fi signal.
- 26:24Sometimes you've got sometimes you've got the full bar and feel
- 26:28unstoppable, and other times you're buffering just trying to
- 26:32get off the couch. But A at least with low T, you
- 26:38can still blame everything on your hormones.
- 26:41Mood swings, naps, forgetting why you walked into a room.
- 26:44It's all part of the adventure. So here's to embracing the UPS,
- 26:48surviving the downs, and remembering even if your
- 26:51testosterone is low, your sense of humor.
- 26:53You should always stay high. Absolutely agree.
- 26:57Thanks everyone, see you next. Time.
- 26:58All right. See everybody?
- 26:59So pro tip everyone, don't ever diagnose PMS.
