- 0:18Speaker 1: Happy Friday, everybody.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Welcome to the.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Hopefully we can have a fun show together today. Lots
- 0:30Speaker 2: of football to talk about.
- 0:31Speaker 1: A jam-packed slate this weekend in college football and in
- 0:35Speaker 1: the NFL. Storylines abound on all fronts. We march closer
- 0:39Speaker 1: toward the Utah Mammoth. starting their official regular season. That's,
- 0:44Speaker 1: by the way, that's starting like next week. We are,
- 0:48Speaker 1: I think, six days away from the first regular season
- 0:52Speaker 1: game for the Utah Mammoth.
- 0:54Speaker 2: The Jazz, a couple weeks after that.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Baseball playoffs coming right up, and we are approaching the
- 1:02Speaker 1: best time of year in sports.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Utah on the road against Iowa State.
- 1:08Speaker 1: We will be efforting a conversation with the voice of
- 1:10Speaker 1: the Utes, Bill Riley, Lee Sterling swings by to talk
- 1:14Speaker 1: about the picks for the weekend. Coordinator's Corner with Kevin McGiven.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Mack G, the offensive coordinator at the University of Utah,
- 1:23Speaker 1: who's been praised for his creativity and the versatility, taking advantage,
- 1:29Speaker 1: I should say, of the versatility in the offense. It'll
- 1:32Speaker 1: be great to catch up with Kevin McGiven again. And
- 1:36Speaker 1: we just have a lot to talk about on a Friday.
- 1:40Speaker 2: 877-353-0700. Always love to hear from you.
- 1:45Speaker 1: At Real OC Sports, if you want to participate in
- 1:47Speaker 1: any conversations we have going on on Twitter. And actually,
- 1:52Speaker 1: I just put up a poll question that Iowa State
- 1:58Speaker 1: sparked for me. Now, we have been lucky. We have
- 2:02Speaker 1: been spoiled as a college football fan base here in
- 2:06Speaker 1: the state of Utah because.
- 2:08Speaker 2: We've.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Now seen several iterations of Utah football over the course
- 2:13Speaker 1: of a couple of decades where you can keep alive
- 2:16Speaker 1: a realistic hope for a championship, a conference championship. We're
- 2:19Speaker 1: not talking about a national championship. I know that there
- 2:22Speaker 1: are a few people out there in the fan base
- 2:25Speaker 1: that do hold out hope that college football's expanded playoff
- 2:30Speaker 1: means there will be access to teams like Utah and
- 2:34Speaker 1: that if all things line up beautifully... Utah could be
- 2:38Speaker 1: a national champion in college football.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I don't require that.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I don't worry about that as much as I worry
- 2:46Speaker 1: about conference championships. If Utah, again, starts to be like
- 2:51Speaker 1: a perennial conference champion, like they were kind of in
- 2:55Speaker 1: the Mountain West over a few years and they were
- 2:58Speaker 1: in back-to-back years for the Pac-12 and all of us
- 3:01Speaker 1: thought it would be three years in a row, The
- 3:05Speaker 1: conference itself thought it would be three years in a
- 3:07Speaker 1: row for the University of Utah, if you remember that,
- 3:11Speaker 1: before the injuries piled up. And, you know, the football
- 3:16Speaker 1: gods came to collect their tax for whatever reason that happened.
- 3:22Speaker 1: If Utah becomes dynastic in that way, in the Big
- 3:26Speaker 1: 12 conference, then I will start to have conversations about
- 3:30Speaker 1: can they compete for a natty.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Right now, I don't need that. So when I say,
- 3:35Speaker 2: when I.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Pose the question that I just put up on Twitter
- 3:38Speaker 1: about championships, I'm talking about conference championships at the college level.
- 3:44Speaker 1: In the pros, you don't really care about conference championships.
- 3:48Speaker 1: You don't care that much about division championships, although I
- 3:51Speaker 1: guess some franchises, you hang a banner, a small one
- 3:55Speaker 1: for each. But I pose the question, how many years
- 3:59Speaker 1: would your team have to go without a championship before
- 4:02Speaker 1: you gave up as a fan? And I leave gave
- 4:05Speaker 1: up as a fan open to some interpretation because I
- 4:08Speaker 1: don't think you're going to necessarily stop wearing the gear
- 4:11Speaker 1: or attending the games. I'm just talking about in your
- 4:13Speaker 1: heart before you give up expecting that they are going
- 4:16Speaker 1: to win a championship. We are not anything close to
- 4:20Speaker 1: that for Utah football. I think right now Utah basketball fans...
- 4:26Speaker 1: at least on the men's side are looking at it
- 4:28Speaker 1: and going, ah, I'm still a running Utes fan. I'm
- 4:32Speaker 1: not expecting a conference championship anytime soon.
- 4:37Speaker 2: I'm not there for those purposes.
- 4:39Speaker 1: I'm not buying my season tickets, expecting that this year,
- 4:44Speaker 1: next year, the next year, the next year, anytime in
- 4:47Speaker 1: the near future, we're going to be in that conversation.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Realistically.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I think that if you're a red rocks fan, right?
- 4:55Speaker 1: You have to expect a conference championship every year. And
- 5:00Speaker 1: there was a time, and I think we still are
- 5:03Speaker 1: in the time, where you want Utah Gymnastics to be
- 5:07Speaker 1: competing for a national championship year in and year out.
- 5:10Speaker 1: It's been a long time since they've won a national championship,
- 5:14Speaker 1: but you still expect them to be there. And when
- 5:17Speaker 1: it didn't happen, like last year, you're like, whoa, what's
- 5:20Speaker 1: going on here? Utah skiing, right? National championship contenders all
- 5:28Speaker 1: the time. But as far as like the big time sports,
- 5:31Speaker 1: the revenue sports, and if you're a baseball fan, maybe
- 5:34Speaker 1: you're like, you know what? My Minnesota twins, they haven't
- 5:38Speaker 1: won anything since the early 1990s. I'm removed enough both geologically, geographically,
- 5:48Speaker 1: and emotionally to say like, all right, I'll still watch
- 5:52Speaker 1: them when they're on TV, which is never but it's
- 5:55Speaker 1: not something that's going to affect me emotionally. I've given
- 5:58Speaker 1: up on that championship, and I don't think it's because
- 6:02Speaker 1: of how long it's been, because if I was still there,
- 6:05Speaker 1: I probably would feel differently about it. The San Francisco
- 6:09Speaker 1: 49ers have not won a Super Bowl since the 90s,
- 6:13Speaker 1: the early 90s. They've been oh so close in more
- 6:19Speaker 1: recent history, of course, but they haven't won at all
- 6:23Speaker 1: because of the Championship adjacency, because of the proximity, because
- 6:28Speaker 1: of that almost, I still put some emotional energy as
- 6:33Speaker 1: a 49ers fan into hoping for, expecting, wanting championships every year,
- 6:40Speaker 1: at least for now. And you've probably heard me on
- 6:44Speaker 1: the air sort of like guarding myself against the heartbreak
- 6:49Speaker 1: by saying like, oh man, I think the Super Bowl
- 6:51Speaker 1: window might be closed.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Oh, I don't know.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Is it propped back open because they get another healthy
- 6:58Speaker 1: year out of Trent Williams and they get another healthy
- 7:00Speaker 1: year out of Christian McCaffrey. And Oh my gosh, these
- 7:03Speaker 1: first couple of games, it looks like that Superbowl window
- 7:05Speaker 1: is not just propped open, but it's wide open. Now
- 7:10Speaker 1: they they've got the attrition starting to be an issue. The,
- 7:15Speaker 1: the San Francisco 49ers can't put Nick Bosa. Who's got
- 7:18Speaker 1: a calf injury on IR because they've maximized their IR spots.
- 7:22Speaker 1: They don't have any spots left on IR. So Nick
- 7:26Speaker 1: Bosa has to take up an active roster spot, even
- 7:28Speaker 1: though he's unable to play. Feels like a big issue.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Ian Rappaport called it a ridiculous problem for the San
- 7:36Speaker 1: Francisco 49ers.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Yeah, ridiculous.
- 7:39Speaker 1: And Bosa, even though I'm a Niners fan, I'm not
- 7:43Speaker 1: a big Bosa fan. So you hope you get him
- 7:48Speaker 1: back for the production standpoint. You hope you get him
- 7:50Speaker 1: back because when he is interested, he can do some
- 7:57Speaker 1: really good things for you. I don't think he loves
- 8:00Speaker 1: football and cares about football the way that someone with
- 8:03Speaker 1: that build and that potential should care about football, but
- 8:06Speaker 1: that's a different conversation.
- 8:10Speaker 2: The reason I put.
- 8:11Speaker 1: This conversation at the front of the show today is
- 8:16Speaker 1: partially coincidental because I just want to get it out there.
- 8:18Speaker 3: 877-353-0700.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Always love to hear from you on the text line.
- 8:23Speaker 1: But it's also because Utah is going to play Iowa State.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Do you know when the last time Iowa State won
- 8:33Speaker 1: a conference championship is?
- 8:36Speaker 2: 877-353-0700.
- 8:36Speaker 1: I'm asking this question because of Iowa State. Because that
- 8:41Speaker 1: is a stadium that we expect to be packed even
- 8:46Speaker 1: despite inclement weather. A little bit of rain doesn't scare
- 8:49Speaker 1: the Iowans away. We expect there to be an atmosphere.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Maybe the expectation can be tempered a little bit because
- 8:58Speaker 1: it's not Matt Campbell's always in the conversation, perennial top
- 9:03Speaker 1: 25 Iowa State type teams. But Jimmy Rogers has things
- 9:08Speaker 1: going the way that some people think is going to
- 9:11Speaker 1: be a continuation of that. And Iowans by their nature
- 9:16Speaker 1: are tough-minded and willing to sort of slog through the
- 9:22Speaker 1: muck in order for something good to happen. There's a
- 9:27Speaker 1: stick-to-it-edness and an almost resigned work ethic that exists within
- 9:33Speaker 1: that culture out there. I feel comfortable saying these things
- 9:36Speaker 1: because my roots are in Iowa, my grandparents and my
- 9:39Speaker 1: parents living in Iowa. Do you know the last time
- 9:45Speaker 1: Iowa state's fans got to roll out of bed and
- 9:49Speaker 1: think this might be the year that we win a
- 9:51Speaker 1: conference championship?
- 9:52Speaker 2: Do you know when the last time, remember what we
- 9:54Speaker 2: did last year?
- 9:56Speaker 1: When do you think Iowa state won its last conference
- 9:58Speaker 1: championship in football?
- 10:00Speaker 2: James Peterson.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Speaker 2, isn't it like 1912? It's 1912. And it
- 10:06Speaker 1: was not the big 12 or the big 10. It
- 10:08Speaker 1: was the Missouri Valley conference. And they shared it by
- 10:13Speaker 1: the way, with Nebraska. In 2024, they flirted with it.
- 10:24Speaker 1: The big conversation we had in 2024 was, of course,
- 10:29Speaker 1: Arizona State surprising the bleep out of everybody and being
- 10:34Speaker 1: the conference champions after being picked dead last in the league.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Do you know who they played against in that conference
- 10:41Speaker 1: championship game? It was Iowa State. It was Iowa State, right?
- 10:44Speaker 1: Rocco Beck's first year as a starter.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Iowa State.
- 10:48Speaker 1: has flirted with the conference championship more recently than that.
- 10:52Speaker 1: So maybe that's, what's keeping the hope alive. Kind of
- 10:54Speaker 1: like it is for me with the San Francisco 49ers
- 10:56Speaker 1: Speaker 0 7, 20, 20.
- 10:57Speaker 4: They had a 10 win year. Wasn't that with the
- 11:00Speaker 4: Brock Purdy, your guy as quarterback.
- 11:03Speaker 1: And so they've been really good. They've been, they've been
- 11:05Speaker 1: a top 25 team, but there's levels of expectation and
- 11:12Speaker 1: levels of optimism that exist in football, basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer, whatever.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Real Salt Lake.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Won the only major sports championship in the state of Utah. 2009, right?
- 11:33Speaker 1: So we're going on 17 years since that happened. There
- 11:36Speaker 1: are a lot of fans now that are starting to
- 11:39Speaker 1: go down to America first field that weren't either alive
- 11:44Speaker 1: or they weren't really cognizant of sports the last time
- 11:47Speaker 1: RSL won a big title. I think that fandom exists
- 11:53Speaker 1: for a different reason. That fandom exists and is motivated
- 11:57Speaker 1: by something other than a belief that your franchise and
- 12:00Speaker 1: your team is going to win a championship. It's not
- 12:03Speaker 1: the only worthy pursuit in sports to win a championship,
- 12:06Speaker 1: but it is the one that we put on paper
- 12:09Speaker 1: and say, this is why. And it's the one that
- 12:11Speaker 1: players and coaches almost feel obligated to say that's what
- 12:14Speaker 1: we're chasing right now.
- 12:16Speaker 5: Right.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Morgan Scali sat down at his introductory press conference and
- 12:20Speaker 1: he talked about conference championships, but he also talked about
- 12:22Speaker 1: winning a national.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Championship at the university of Utah. I'm okay.
- 12:26Speaker 1: If he never says that I'm okay. If he never
- 12:28Speaker 1: mentions that I'm okay. If I'm being honest, if he
- 12:31Speaker 1: never even thinks about that, I'm not telling you.
- 12:35Speaker 2: That you have to be, but I am.
- 12:38Speaker 1: So how long would it, your team have to go
- 12:41Speaker 1: without a conference championship before you were just like, all right,
- 12:44Speaker 1: I'll still be, I'll still be a fan, but I'm
- 12:47Speaker 1: going to give up on the idea that this team
- 12:49Speaker 1: is ever going to do something for me. Like Cleveland
- 12:51Speaker 1: Browns fans, they still exist, but they have to be
- 12:55Speaker 1: in their heart of hearts resigned to the fact that
- 12:57Speaker 1: they're not going to win a Superbowl. that it's probably
- 13:00Speaker 1: not going to happen within their lifetime. And pro leagues
- 13:03Speaker 1: are different than college sports because pro leagues, and they
- 13:07Speaker 1: have salary caps in some cases, they have draft structures
- 13:10Speaker 1: in some cases, to where you're supposed to create a
- 13:14Speaker 1: more cyclical environment where the power bounces around, conference to conference,
- 13:18Speaker 1: team to team, market to market, based on oh, we
- 13:23Speaker 1: had really down years, but that means we had four
- 13:26Speaker 1: years in a row where we were drafting in the
- 13:27Speaker 1: top five and we got the best players, and now
- 13:30Speaker 1: five years after we draft those five, now they're.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Developed and now they're ready to compete.
- 13:35Speaker 1: It happens sometimes, but because of trades and free agency
- 13:40Speaker 1: and things like that, it doesn't come to fruition the
- 13:43Speaker 1: way that a lot of people think it should. And
- 13:45Speaker 1: we've talked on this show about how there's so many
- 13:47Speaker 1: markets that you almost can't explain. Like, why do the
- 13:50Speaker 1: Atlanta Hawks... not have championships? Why do the Atlanta Falcons
- 13:55Speaker 1: not have more championships? That is a major market. That
- 13:58Speaker 1: is an incredible city. That is a wonderful place to
- 14:00Speaker 1: live for athletes, for their families. And for whatever reason,
- 14:05Speaker 1: the franchises haven't been able to put it together. And
- 14:08Speaker 1: it's been a little while for the Braves, too. And
- 14:10Speaker 1: they can't support a hockey team. Although there's a group
- 14:15Speaker 1: of investors that are apparently flirting with the possibility of
- 14:18Speaker 1: giving Atlanta its third NHL franchise title.
- 14:22Speaker 2: And if expansion comes rolling around.
- 14:25Speaker 1: So, look, I want to know, and I don't want
- 14:28Speaker 1: to phrase it in a way that could be offensive
- 14:31Speaker 1: or it will influence how you answer the question, 877-353-0700,
- 14:38Speaker 1: or at ReloSeaSports on Twitter if you want to vote
- 14:41Speaker 1: in the official poll. How many years would your team
- 14:44Speaker 1: have to go without a championship before you gave up
- 14:46Speaker 1: as a fan?
- 14:46Speaker 2: 10 to 15?
- 14:48Speaker 1: 15 to 25, 25 to 50.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Or I will never give up.
- 14:54Speaker 1: I think that jazz fans right now are on the,
- 14:57Speaker 1: I will never give up train because it's been almost
- 15:01Speaker 1: 50 years since the jazz moved from new Orleans to
- 15:04Speaker 1: the state of Utah and they have never won a championship.
- 15:08Speaker 1: And it's been since the mid nineties that they actually really,
- 15:12Speaker 1: truly contended for one in a meaningful way. I guess
- 15:18Speaker 1: that's unfair to the Darren Williams Western conference champions.
- 15:21Speaker 2: No, that's fair. They didn't win the Western comp. They,
- 15:23Speaker 2: they went to the, they went to one Western conference
- 15:26Speaker 2: finals and lost in five games.
- 15:28Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 15:28Speaker 1: So even if you say it was that memento cord,
- 15:33Speaker 1: Andre Kirilenko, Darren Williams team, that was the last time
- 15:36Speaker 1: it's still been kind of a while. So I think
- 15:38Speaker 1: jazz fans are proving to the NBA that they're in the,
- 15:41Speaker 1: I will never give up stage. I guess you could
- 15:44Speaker 1: still say that you're in the 25 to 50, but
- 15:47Speaker 1: You got to win one in the next three years.
- 15:49Speaker 2: If it's going to be 50 or less.
- 15:53Speaker 1: I think BYU fans are probably going to answer this
- 15:56Speaker 1: question differently than Utah fans because BYU fans haven't won
- 16:01Speaker 1: a conference championship in a long time, partially because they
- 16:04Speaker 1: weren't in a conference. This year, they expect to win
- 16:06Speaker 1: a conference championship, but also a lot of BYU fans
- 16:10Speaker 1: cling to the 1984 national championship as the high watermark
- 16:14Speaker 1: of their program. And Obviously a national championship is a
- 16:19Speaker 1: national championship and that's something that everyone wants in their
- 16:22Speaker 1: trophy case, but that's been quite a while. It's been
- 16:28Speaker 1: 42 years since you had one of those. So you'd
- 16:30Speaker 1: be in the 25 to 50 category. If you answer
- 16:33Speaker 1: it based on that, obviously they won mountain West conference
- 16:35Speaker 1: championships more recently than that 1984 championship.
- 16:39Speaker 2: They won whack championships more recently than that.
- 16:43Speaker 1: It's, It's a loyalty test, but it's not because I'm
- 16:46Speaker 1: not expecting you to be disloyal to your team. I'm
- 16:48Speaker 1: just expecting you to answer based on the truthful, emotional
- 16:52Speaker 1: energy you put into, do I believe this team can
- 16:55Speaker 1: win a conference championship or not? And it sparked all
- 16:58Speaker 1: by Utah going on the road against Iowa state and
- 17:02Speaker 1: facing a team that has not won a conference championship
- 17:05Speaker 1: since they shared the Missouri Valley title with Nebraska in 1912.
- 17:14Speaker 7: What do you think the top song on the charts
- 17:21Speaker 7: was in 1912?
- 17:25Speaker 1: Think it's a song anyone's ever heard these days? Moonlight
- 17:29Speaker 1: Bay by the American Quartet, in case you're wondering. Maybe
- 17:32Speaker 1: pull that up if we have it in.
- 17:36Speaker 2: The computer.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Shout out to the American Quartet, just ahead of their time.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Are those the guys, are those the guys that.
- 17:45Speaker 4: Were playing the violin and stuff on the Titanic deck
- 17:50Speaker 4: is in the movie.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Is that, is that the American quartet? That's 1912 is
- 17:54Speaker 2: what the Titanic sank. Very good by you. That is
- 17:58Speaker 2: also when Fenway park opened. Do you realize that? Is
- 18:00Speaker 2: that true?
- 18:01Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 18:02Speaker 2: So it, it's a long time ago.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Let's see a major historical events in 1912 to go
- 18:08Speaker 1: along with an Iowa state conference championship. Titanic hit an
- 18:12Speaker 1: iceberg on the maiden voyage, sank in the Atlantic, killed
- 18:15Speaker 1: over 1,500 people. Six-year-old Pu Yi, the last emperor of China,
- 18:21Speaker 1: abdicated the throne after 2,000 years of imperial rule and
- 18:26Speaker 1: established the People's Republic of China.
- 18:29Speaker 2: That was in February of 1912. Yeah, we didn't like
- 18:35Speaker 2: Pu Yi. No one likes Pu.
- 18:38Speaker 1: British Explorer, Robert Falcon, Scott elite name, by the way,
- 18:42Speaker 1: reached the South pole only to find that Norwegian Explorer rolled.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Amundsen had beaten him there three weeks earlier. Speaker 2,
- 18:49Speaker 1: I've heard of rolled. I haven't said that. That's why
- 18:51Speaker 1: we haven't heard of Falcon. Scott, much better name. First
- 18:55Speaker 1: year last because being second place to the South pole
- 18:59Speaker 1: or the North pole, the top of Everest, it doesn't count.
- 19:02Speaker 2: So Speaker 3, did you say he's an American? He
- 19:06Speaker 2: was a Brit. He was a Brit. So he's the
- 19:07Speaker 2: first Brit, I guess, to make it down there.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Woodrow Wilson's elected 28th president of the United States. Ooh,
- 19:18Speaker 1: the emperor Meiji of Japan ended. He'd passed and ended
- 19:22Speaker 1: the Meiji era. And of course began the Taisho period
- 19:25Speaker 1: under emperor Taisho. We all know that.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Yikes.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Okay.
- 19:29Speaker 1: 1912 was a big year for maritime adventures and explorers
- 19:34Speaker 1: in the Southern hemisphere. And also for Iowa state cyclone football.
- 19:40Speaker 4: So I was curious when BYU's BYU football's last conference
- 19:47Speaker 4: championship was, do you know off the.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Top of your head? BYU's last conference championship? Yeah.
- 19:58Speaker 3: 09?
- 19:58Speaker 2: Close.
- 19:59Speaker 3: 07.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Mountain West. Yeah, that makes more sense.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:04Speaker 4: 09 was a good guess, though, because that was the
- 20:07Speaker 4: last year in the Mountain West year that they beat Utah.
- 20:11Speaker 2: But they did not finish first in the Mountain West
- 20:13Speaker 2: that year. I guess that was TCU.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Oh, that was TCU. So it's been sneakily a long
- 20:22Speaker 1: time for BYU football. They've been relevant, especially in recent years.
- 20:27Speaker 1: So maybe that has.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Made it so we.
- 20:34Speaker 4: And, of course, you mentioned the Independence era. We just
- 20:36Speaker 4: knew that that wasn't in the cards for them in Independence.
- 20:39Speaker 4: So no one was disappointed with not winning a conference
- 20:43Speaker 4: championship in that era, of course. But it's been a
- 20:49Speaker 4: long time for BYU since they won a conference championship.
- 20:55Speaker 1: I beg to differ that RSL won the only major
- 20:58Speaker 1: sports championship. There are only four major sports and football
- 21:01Speaker 1: ain't one of them. Well, I thought you were going
- 21:03Speaker 1: to say, well, what about like the Utah archers?
- 21:05Speaker 2: Did they win? Yeah. Talons back to back, baby.
- 21:09Speaker 3: Talons.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Softball. Back to back for softball.
- 21:12Speaker 9: Okay.
- 21:13Speaker 2: So that's my bad. Come on.
- 21:14Speaker 9: No.
- 21:15Speaker 2: You're right.
- 21:15Speaker 6: Look.
- 21:16Speaker 4: But you're right to say major. And he's, this texter's
- 21:20Speaker 4: not totally wrong to say that soccer's not a major.
- 21:23Speaker 4: doesn't belong with the other major sports in North America,
- 21:26Speaker 4: but it, as far as like high highest level of
- 21:31Speaker 4: the sport in the United States, it's in the highest profile.
- 21:36Speaker 4: It's it's RSL. And then the talents, the archers are
- 21:40Speaker 4: the next ones. They're not quite as high a profile
- 21:43Speaker 4: as even RSL though.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Derek, says lifelong fandom is different than regular fandom. I've
- 21:48Speaker 1: been a jazz fan since I was six. I will
- 21:51Speaker 1: never give up on the jazz. The youths, however, are different.
- 21:53Speaker 1: I didn't get into them until I was 14. The
- 21:56Speaker 1: bad years of wit were tempting me to give up.
- 21:58Speaker 1: So like, look, it's fine. If this is how you
- 22:00Speaker 1: feel about whatever it's, and there are different levels to it.
- 22:04Speaker 1: I guess your, your tenure as a fan definitely matters.
- 22:11Speaker 1: I think that the atmosphere in which your team operates
- 22:14Speaker 1: also matters because like, if you're a jazz fan, you
- 22:18Speaker 1: probably have some optimism, some belief, some rekindled hope because
- 22:24Speaker 1: of the fact that they play in a league where
- 22:27Speaker 1: even though it's not the hardest of hard salary caps,
- 22:29Speaker 1: it is a salary cap league. And you know, the,
- 22:33Speaker 1: the draft process has now finally rewarded the jazz in
- 22:37Speaker 1: a way.
- 22:37Speaker 2: That gives you a little bit of hope.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Also, Smith Entertainment Group has made some really good hires
- 22:44Speaker 1: in the front office, and you believe that the Angels
- 22:46Speaker 1: have a vision for this, right? So your belief can
- 22:50Speaker 1: be based on a lot of those things. I think
- 22:52Speaker 1: that as fresh as the Utah Mammoth are in this market,
- 22:56Speaker 1: you can see the vision of Bill Armstrong and company
- 23:00Speaker 1: kind of taking shape. And my belief is that the
- 23:04Speaker 1: Mammoth will win a championship or come closer to a
- 23:07Speaker 1: championship in the near future than the Jazz. And I
- 23:11Speaker 1: think that that's going to be a really interesting thing
- 23:14Speaker 1: in this market that's already, you know, a lot of
- 23:16Speaker 1: people were like so sick of five bad years for
- 23:18Speaker 1: the Jazz. Both teams are going to be fun to
- 23:20Speaker 1: watch this year. Both teams are going to be trying
- 23:23Speaker 1: to win this year. One of those two teams, in
- 23:26Speaker 1: my opinion, is going to be a playoff team and
- 23:28Speaker 1: probably win a playoff series. That's my expectation. Maybe make
- 23:33Speaker 1: a real push finally. And the other one is not yet.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Now we expect that soon for the Utah jazz, but
- 23:42Speaker 1: I think that the mammoth are closer.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Right.
- 23:45Speaker 1: And so like we're, none of us are lifelong mammoth fans.
- 23:49Speaker 1: If the mammoth go 10 years without a championship, are
- 23:52Speaker 1: we going to be like, all right, they're never going
- 23:54Speaker 1: to win one. Or are we going to be like,
- 23:56Speaker 1: this is a well-run organization that, This is more of
- 23:58Speaker 1: a destination for hockey players than it is for basketball
- 24:02Speaker 1: players for whatever those reasons are. So I believe that
- 24:06Speaker 1: this environment lends itself to the success for the mammoth
- 24:09Speaker 1: in a way that it doesn't for the Utah jazz.
- 24:11Speaker 1: And when we get a major league baseball team, if
- 24:13Speaker 1: that major league baseball team goes 10 years, 15 years,
- 24:17Speaker 1: 20 years, 30 years before they win anything big, are
- 24:20Speaker 1: you going to be the fan? That's like, I like
- 24:22Speaker 1: them because they're mine. I'm a fan because I can
- 24:25Speaker 1: take my kids there. I'm a fan because my mom
- 24:28Speaker 1: or dad took me there when I was a kid,
- 24:30Speaker 1: but I don't believe that they're.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Actually going to win a championship.
- 24:33Speaker 1: I would love to, and I should have asked this
- 24:36Speaker 1: question when we had Eugene repay on, I would love
- 24:38Speaker 1: to know how many Iowa state fans feel that their
- 24:42Speaker 1: fandom is even closely contingent to championship contention because it
- 24:47Speaker 1: doesn't really make sense. If it is, you haven't won
- 24:51Speaker 1: a conference championship since 1912. Iowa state is one of
- 24:56Speaker 1: the best examples of why college sports fandom and winning
- 25:01Speaker 1: are only loosely connected. It's about your proximity, your emotional connection,
- 25:07Speaker 1: the memories you have in the stadium. And yes, there
- 25:10Speaker 1: are teams that you get all of it, but there
- 25:13Speaker 1: are plenty like Iowa state that They still get great attendance,
- 25:16Speaker 1: still get great support, still get a great atmosphere, and
- 25:19Speaker 1: it's not because anyone intellectually actually believes that a conference
- 25:24Speaker 1: championship is happening anytime soon. It hasn't happened since the
- 25:28Speaker 1: Titanic hit the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Would we be that.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Loyal as Utah football fans, as BYU football fans?
- 25:39Speaker 2: I don't know, man. I hope so. But would we be?
- 25:45Speaker 1: Good job, Iowa State fans, I guess. We got a
- 25:50Speaker 1: lot to talk about on the show today. That's the
- 25:52Speaker 1: question if you want to go vote on it on
- 25:53Speaker 1: the Twitter poll or you want to respond at 877-353-0700.
- 26:00Speaker 2: The voice of the Utes, Bill Riley, is going to
- 26:02Speaker 2: join us next.
- 26:02Speaker 1: We'll dive into some of the actual numbers here as
- 26:05Speaker 1: Utah takes on an Iowa State team 2-1-1. Only loss
- 26:09Speaker 1: coming in a close game to a Big Ten team
- 26:11Speaker 1: that is ranked. That's your Iowa Hawkeyes. And, of course,
- 26:15Speaker 1: Utah sits at number 15 right now. First road game.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Funky weather, maybe. Lots to discuss in this matchup. We'll
- 26:22Speaker 1: do it with Bill Riley in three minutes on the
- 26:25Speaker 1: Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 26:52Speaker 3: You're tuned to The Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 26:55Speaker 3: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 27:06Speaker 10: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Welcome in. The voice of the Utes, Bill Riley.
- 27:11Speaker 1: A conversation brought to you every single week here on
- 27:14Speaker 1: the Sean O'Connell.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Show by Handy and Handy.
- 27:17Speaker 1: HandylawUtah.com for any personal injury or legal questions that you have.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Bill Riley, welcome to the show. How are you, sir?
- 27:25Speaker 9: I am good, Sean O'Connell. Good Friday to you, sir.
- 27:28Speaker 2: Happy Friday to you.
- 27:30Speaker 1: I think you are leaving the beautiful Salt Lake Valley
- 27:33Speaker 1: to go to the rainy Midwest.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Is that correct?
- 27:39Speaker 6: I will be.
- 27:41Speaker 9: In Ames, Iowa, or picking up for Ames, Iowa, in
- 27:45Speaker 9: a little less than an hour.
- 27:48Speaker 1: This is the first road game for Utah this season
- 27:53Speaker 1: under Morgan Scali.
- 27:54Speaker 2: Obviously, they played the bowl game with him as the.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Acting head coach last year, but this is his program's
- 28:00Speaker 1: first road game, and it comes potentially with a little
- 28:03Speaker 1: bit of rain. I think that's not as big of
- 28:06Speaker 1: an issue as it being the first road game. What
- 28:09Speaker 1: are the adjustments in your mind for this team when
- 28:12Speaker 1: they're on the road for the first time?
- 28:14Speaker 6: Oh, I asked Morgan about that.
- 28:16Speaker 9: It's more procedure than anything else, just kind of traveling,
- 28:21Speaker 9: what clothes to wear, being to the airport on time,
- 28:24Speaker 9: all that kind of stuff, staying in the hotel, meetings,
- 28:27Speaker 9: things like that. I think it helps that it's a
- 28:30Speaker 9: relatively early game. Mid-afternoon in Iowa, you're not sitting around
- 28:34Speaker 9: the hotel all day long.
- 28:35Speaker 6: You'll be there in the morning and then.
- 28:37Speaker 9: Head over to the stadium midday just a little bit.
- 28:40Speaker 9: But I actually, in my opinion, I think the rain's
- 28:42Speaker 9: a bigger deal than the first road trip just because
- 28:45Speaker 9: you don't know what the weather's going to be. It's
- 28:48Speaker 9: probably going to be raining, probably maybe at times heavy rain.
- 28:51Speaker 9: The field's in terrible condition, I've been told by people
- 28:54Speaker 9: in Ames. So I actually think that the weather and
- 28:59Speaker 9: the rain and the field might be bigger issues than
- 29:02Speaker 9: the actual travel.
- 29:05Speaker 1: What's going on with their Kentucky bluegrass, which of course
- 29:08Speaker 1: has grown over a sand base that was at one
- 29:10Speaker 1: time called the best turf in college football?
- 29:15Speaker 9: I don't know, but they've had like 16 inches of
- 29:18Speaker 9: rain this month alone. We don't get 16 inches of
- 29:21Speaker 9: rain in like three years in Utah. They've got it
- 29:23Speaker 9: this month. Then they played a game last weekend, and
- 29:26Speaker 9: apparently the field's pretty torn up. So I'll be there
- 29:30Speaker 9: early tomorrow to put my eyes on it. But, yeah,
- 29:34Speaker 9: it's apparently not in great shape right now.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Okay, so we have coordinator's corner today with Kevin McGibbon.
- 29:40Speaker 1: that's part of a conversation when you're talking, especially about
- 29:43Speaker 1: your offensive play calls, because you still have to put
- 29:46Speaker 1: these guys in a good position. You still have to
- 29:49Speaker 1: put these guys in a spot where they can find
- 29:51Speaker 1: some success. How much do you think it changes the
- 29:54Speaker 1: play calling if the field is in bad shape and wet?
- 29:58Speaker 9: I think probably a little bit. I mean, if it's raining,
- 30:02Speaker 9: you might want to limit the number of touches. You
- 30:05Speaker 9: may not see... fly, sweep, reverse, option plays with your
- 30:09Speaker 9: two quarterbacks on the field together. I think you probably
- 30:11Speaker 9: want to limit some of that. I don't think it
- 30:13Speaker 9: necessarily limits how you want to call the game from
- 30:16Speaker 9: a pass or a run standpoint, but depending on how
- 30:19Speaker 9: the surface is and depending on if it's raining and
- 30:22Speaker 9: how hard it's raining, that might impact some of the
- 30:25Speaker 9: stuff that Utah likes to do. They might have to
- 30:27Speaker 9: be maybe a little bit more straightforward in their play calling,
- 30:31Speaker 9: maybe not as much side-to-side stuff as they've done in
- 30:33Speaker 9: the first three weeks, but I think they probably planned
- 30:37Speaker 9: for this because the rain's been in the forecast again
- 30:39Speaker 9: long or all week long. So I would guess maybe
- 30:43Speaker 9: it limits you a little bit, but not completely for sure.
- 30:47Speaker 1: The side to side stuff was, was pretty successful against
- 30:50Speaker 1: Utah state. The more direct inside run stuff is where
- 30:54Speaker 1: maybe there were a couple of problems and we would have,
- 30:57Speaker 1: I'd probably be having a little different conversation if way
- 31:00Speaker 1: Sean's huge 90 plus yarder doesn't come back. But again, Still,
- 31:05Speaker 1: when you look at kind of the true average on
- 31:07Speaker 1: runs in that game against Utah State, and credit to
- 31:10Speaker 1: the Aggies, this is the thing that they're good at, runs,
- 31:13Speaker 1: especially runs between the tackles, kind of averaged three, three
- 31:16Speaker 1: and a half yards for the Utes last week. And
- 31:18Speaker 1: if you have to simplify your playbook a little bit
- 31:20Speaker 1: and you have to lean on that type of play
- 31:23Speaker 1: calling a little bit more in Ames, do we feel
- 31:26Speaker 1: any nervousness based on the results against Utah State?
- 31:29Speaker 9: No, I don't think so, because I think you can
- 31:31Speaker 9: still throw the football pretty well. And if you're starting
- 31:34Speaker 9: to throw it, maybe you come out and you throw
- 31:35Speaker 9: the football a little bit early to loosen them up.
- 31:37Speaker 9: We do know Iowa State's pretty physical up front, and
- 31:41Speaker 9: their coach is a defensive guy.
- 31:43Speaker 6: And so maybe you come.
- 31:45Speaker 9: Out and you loosen them up by throwing that football.
- 31:47Speaker 9: I think the thing that Utah's got an advantage on
- 31:49Speaker 9: this year, Sean, is I don't think that they have
- 31:52Speaker 9: to lean in for one style or the other. I
- 31:55Speaker 9: think they can go whatever the defense gives them. They
- 31:58Speaker 9: can kind of go the opposite way with it. So
- 32:01Speaker 9: it will be interesting to see, though, if they try
- 32:03Speaker 9: to get way shot a little bit more on track
- 32:07Speaker 9: or impactful, maybe trying to run that football, being on
- 32:10Speaker 9: the road, especially maybe they get a lead. Maybe they're up.
- 32:12Speaker 9: you know, 10 in the second half. Maybe you'll lean
- 32:14Speaker 9: a little bit more because they really, you know, Wayshon
- 32:17Speaker 9: had the one big run last weekend, but they haven't
- 32:19Speaker 9: really fed him. For a guy that's running back one,
- 32:22Speaker 9: they haven't really fed him the football yet this year.
- 32:25Speaker 1: Yeah, we talked about that kind of a lot this week.
- 32:27Speaker 1: The appropriate number of touches for somebody like Wayshon, who
- 32:32Speaker 1: Devin Dampier made the great point with us in addition
- 32:35Speaker 1: with Dev that He's doing the right thing even when
- 32:37Speaker 1: the ball is not in his hand. He's a contributor
- 32:40Speaker 1: and a captain and a leader even when he's not
- 32:42Speaker 1: getting those touches. But that just means you reward him
- 32:45Speaker 1: even more with more touches. In an ideal world, what
- 32:49Speaker 1: do we see the average touches for way Sean Parker
- 32:51Speaker 1: as the season progresses?
- 32:53Speaker 9: I think 20 is a really good number. Maybe you're
- 32:56Speaker 9: getting him somewhere between 14 and 17 rushes. and maybe
- 33:01Speaker 9: three and four looks targets in the pass game. To me,
- 33:07Speaker 9: because you've got so many weapons and he's one of
- 33:10Speaker 9: your lead weapons, I think 20 touches feels right for
- 33:13Speaker 9: a guy. I mean, a guy like Wayshawn probably said,
- 33:15Speaker 9: give me 30 touches. Let me run it 23 times
- 33:18Speaker 9: and catch it seven times. But I think when you've
- 33:20Speaker 9: got Daniel Bray and you've got Chavez Soto and you've
- 33:23Speaker 9: got Brazen Pagan and you've got Ricky Johnson and you've
- 33:25Speaker 9: got Bird Ficklin and Devin Dampierre, Getting 30 touches is just,
- 33:31Speaker 9: I just don't see that being in the cards for
- 33:33Speaker 9: anybody in the Utah offense. But I think 20 would
- 33:36Speaker 9: be a really good spot if you could average in
- 33:38Speaker 9: that number of 20. And with his 5.5, 6 yards
- 33:41Speaker 9: a carry, which is what he kind of averages at times,
- 33:44Speaker 9: did last year, I think that gets you that 100 yards,
- 33:47Speaker 9: and that makes you a pretty good contributor.
- 33:49Speaker 1: On the coach's show the other night, shout out to
- 33:51Speaker 1: you and Morgan Scali and Sly and everyone involved in that,
- 33:54Speaker 1: On the coach's show the other night, Morgan, I think,
- 33:56Speaker 1: closed things out saying, you know, we've got to get
- 33:58Speaker 1: some plays on special teams in a game like this one.
- 34:02Speaker 2: And you and I have talked about this over the years.
- 34:04Speaker 1: In the best years of Utah football, special teams have
- 34:07Speaker 1: been a major, major boon to their success. This year,
- 34:11Speaker 1: we've already had a couple of miscues, especially in punt return.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Mana Carvalho appears on the injury report this week. It
- 34:18Speaker 1: looks like he had some issues handling the receptions, the blockers,
- 34:22Speaker 1: taking punts again last week against Utah State.
- 34:25Speaker 2: Is there a change coming there?
- 34:27Speaker 9: I don't think so. I think they really like Kip.
- 34:29Speaker 9: I think we saw glimpses of what he could be
- 34:31Speaker 9: last year. Took a pretty good shot on that two-point
- 34:34Speaker 9: conversion swing and gate play. I think that may be
- 34:36Speaker 9: where he got dinged up a little bit last week.
- 34:38Speaker 9: I think they like mana in that game. The days
- 34:42Speaker 9: of kick returns are about done. What's funny is the
- 34:45Speaker 9: last time Utah played at Iowa state was 16 years ago.
- 34:48Speaker 9: Shakey Smithson had a huge punt return and Reggie Dunn
- 34:51Speaker 9: took one to the house on a kickoff. So maybe
- 34:54Speaker 9: there's something about Jack Christ stadium that will rejump that again.
- 34:56Speaker 9: I think it would be great if Monica get a
- 35:00Speaker 9: 15 or 20 yard punt return, maybe flip the field
- 35:03Speaker 9: just a little bit. This offense has been awfully good.
- 35:06Speaker 9: I just think if you stay mistake-free on the road,
- 35:08Speaker 9: it would be great to get a couple of explosives
- 35:10Speaker 9: in the special teams.
- 35:11Speaker 3: Game, Sean.
- 35:12Speaker 9: But if Dylan Curtis makes his kicks... And if if
- 35:16Speaker 9: if Orion Phillips has to punt and he's good punting,
- 35:19Speaker 9: I think it's more on the other side. Iowa State
- 35:22Speaker 9: has an all league punt returner. They're running back Aiden Flora.
- 35:25Speaker 9: He took a punt return back last week. He's returned
- 35:27Speaker 9: a couple in his career and he got a kick
- 35:30Speaker 9: return for a touchdown last week against Bowling Green. To me,
- 35:33Speaker 9: be mistake free on your side and cover kicks. And
- 35:36Speaker 9: on the road, I think that's good.
- 35:38Speaker 1: Bill Riley, our guest here, the voice of the Utes,
- 35:40Speaker 1: getting ready to go to Ames, Iowa, to call Iowa
- 35:42Speaker 1: State versus Utah, which you can, of course, listen to
- 35:45Speaker 1: right here on your home of the Utes, ESPN 700
- 35:47Speaker 1: and 92.1 FM. It's fair to ask three games into
- 35:51Speaker 1: a season how good any team is, right, based on
- 35:54Speaker 1: results and competition and things like that. Iowa State is
- 35:58Speaker 1: more tested than Utah is. They played a ranked Iowa
- 36:01Speaker 1: team very closely in the Cy Hawk battle. They lost
- 36:04Speaker 1: that one ultimately. They beat up on SEMO. They beat
- 36:07Speaker 1: up on Bowling Green, like you just mentioned. How good
- 36:10Speaker 1: is Iowa State, in your opinion?
- 36:12Speaker 9: I think they're good. I've talked to some people around
- 36:15Speaker 9: Iowa State. I think they're better than people expected them
- 36:17Speaker 9: to be, or right now, at least, better than I
- 36:19Speaker 9: expected them to be, because I just didn't know. New coach,
- 36:22Speaker 9: 83 new players, no starters returning from a year ago.
- 36:26Speaker 9: I thought it could have been really a catastrophic, bottom-out
- 36:29Speaker 9: rebuild year for them. Jimmy Rogers has done a really,
- 36:31Speaker 9: really nice job, and I think they play really hard,
- 36:34Speaker 9: and Rogers is a tested... good head football coach who's
- 36:37Speaker 9: won championships at the one double a level and did
- 36:40Speaker 9: a nice job at wazoo last year so i think
- 36:42Speaker 9: they're good i don't think they've played anybody as good
- 36:45Speaker 9: as utah i don't think they've played an offense nearly
- 36:48Speaker 9: as good as utah we all know that iowa and
- 36:50Speaker 9: iowa state is about field goals it is every year
- 36:53Speaker 9: anytime you play iowa it's about field position and field
- 36:55Speaker 9: goals they haven't played a team like utah so i
- 36:58Speaker 9: think this is a really good test for utah going
- 37:00Speaker 9: on the road but i think by far it's the
- 37:03Speaker 9: best test of the year for iowa or iowa state too.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Right now, Utah is giving up 2.68 yards per carry
- 37:10Speaker 1: to the opposing run game. Also, Iowa State has a
- 37:14Speaker 1: guy you just mentioned. Their running back, Aiden Flora, is
- 37:17Speaker 1: right now the top rusher in the conference. He is
- 37:20Speaker 1: averaging 8.6 yards per carry. I went and I broke
- 37:23Speaker 1: it down game by game. And even against Iowa, he
- 37:26Speaker 1: was averaging five yards a carry. Is that the biggest
- 37:30Speaker 1: test for Utah's defense this week? You've got to stop
- 37:33Speaker 1: that guy and that Iowa State run game in order
- 37:36Speaker 1: to get this game in hand.
- 37:38Speaker 9: Absolutely, positively. They throw it okay. Jalen Rayner's not a
- 37:42Speaker 9: bad quarterback. I'm not sure what the weapons are that
- 37:45Speaker 9: they have. in that past game because they really haven't
- 37:48Speaker 9: been established. It's not nearly like the group that they
- 37:51Speaker 9: had a couple of years ago when they came into
- 37:52Speaker 9: Salt Lake City with the two Higgins and Knoll who
- 37:55Speaker 9: were NFL draft choices and are playing right now. I
- 37:59Speaker 9: think it's stopping the run game. And to be very fair,
- 38:02Speaker 9: when Utah had some struggles defensively toward the end of
- 38:05Speaker 9: last year, namely in that Kansas State game, it was
- 38:09Speaker 9: against a team that wanted to line up and run
- 38:11Speaker 9: the football. And that's what I think Iowa State wants
- 38:14Speaker 9: to do, especially in the conditions tomorrow. They've got a
- 38:16Speaker 9: mobile quarterback, and they've got Flora who can run it.
- 38:19Speaker 9: They've got some decent complementary backs. but they're going to
- 38:22Speaker 9: want to line up and run that football. And this
- 38:25Speaker 9: is going to be, for me at least, the first
- 38:27Speaker 9: really big test of the year for that Utah. Again,
- 38:31Speaker 9: we saw a struggle at the end of last year,
- 38:32Speaker 9: and we'll see if they've kind of fixed some of
- 38:34Speaker 9: those things.
- 38:37Speaker 1: You saw Kalfusi also appearing on the injury report as questionable.
- 38:40Speaker 2: What do you know about his availability?
- 38:45Speaker 9: Know any specifics on it uh i think my expectation
- 38:49Speaker 9: until somebody tells me otherwise is that we see him
- 38:52Speaker 9: probably play this week along with carvalho but i haven't
- 38:55Speaker 9: been told one way or another i usually get the
- 38:58Speaker 9: update on it either tonight or first thing tomorrow morning another.
- 39:02Speaker 1: Minute or two here with bill riley voice of the
- 39:04Speaker 1: youth as he gets ready to call iowa state versus
- 39:07Speaker 1: utah uh Number one scoring offense, number one scoring defense
- 39:13Speaker 1: in the conference right now. This Utah football team is
- 39:16Speaker 1: just three games in. They're looking, I think, better than
- 39:20Speaker 1: a lot of people thought. The increased competition or the
- 39:26Speaker 1: tougher tests of Big 12 play, how big do you
- 39:29Speaker 1: think the jump is? is based on what Utah's already
- 39:32Speaker 1: played against versus what's coming in these next few weeks?
- 39:36Speaker 9: I don't know, Sean, if the next few weeks are.
- 39:39Speaker 6: A big jump.
- 39:40Speaker 9: I think they'll be a little bit better than what
- 39:42Speaker 9: they saw in the non-conference season. But Iowa State, Kansas,
- 39:47Speaker 9: and Colorado are right now in the big 12. So
- 39:52Speaker 9: I think it will be up, but not a big
- 39:54Speaker 9: step up. I really think this schedule lays out nicely
- 39:57Speaker 9: to kind of gradually ease you into late October and
- 40:01Speaker 9: November where the competition gets a lot better for this team.
- 40:04Speaker 9: But I think Iowa state is going to be the
- 40:06Speaker 9: best team they've played this year, just from a toughness
- 40:10Speaker 9: and organizational, it's a road game, all of that stuff.
- 40:13Speaker 9: So I think that will be the case, but I
- 40:15Speaker 9: don't think it's a huge step up from what they
- 40:18Speaker 9: saw in the non-conference.
- 40:20Speaker 1: Devin Dampier has been awesome so far. We have seen
- 40:24Speaker 1: him take some big hits, and it's only been three weeks.
- 40:28Speaker 1: As far as we know, we just had him in
- 40:29Speaker 1: studio not too long ago, and he looks healthy. He's
- 40:32Speaker 1: not limping around. He doesn't seem like he's hiding anything.
- 40:36Speaker 1: Aside from a little head cold, it looks like he's
- 40:39Speaker 1: as healthy and good as we're going to expect him
- 40:41Speaker 1: to be. But there's always more that you can find
- 40:44Speaker 1: in the gas tank for someone like that, especially with
- 40:47Speaker 1: his mastery of the offense and athleticism and now experience.
- 40:50Speaker 1: Are we going to get a better version of Devin
- 40:53Speaker 1: moving forward, or is this enough? Is this an adequate
- 40:57Speaker 1: level of production from the Utah quarterback for them to
- 41:00Speaker 1: pursue everything they want to pursue?
- 41:02Speaker 9: Well, I think you'd like to see him... I don't
- 41:05Speaker 9: think we've really seen Devin run the football much this year.
- 41:08Speaker 9: I think we haven't seen that creativity that he's got.
- 41:12Speaker 9: I think the offensive line's protected him very well, and
- 41:15Speaker 9: they've gotten the ball out to the playmakers. I think...
- 41:18Speaker 9: I'm not saying we have to see it, but I
- 41:20Speaker 9: think that there's still... We haven't seen much of that
- 41:22Speaker 9: this year. We've seen a lot of that dual quarterback.
- 41:25Speaker 9: Bird Ficklin's probably run it a little bit more than
- 41:27Speaker 9: Devin has this year. Do I think there's more? Yeah,
- 41:31Speaker 9: I think there's more, but I think if they execute
- 41:34Speaker 9: the way they have and Devin protects the ball... He's
- 41:37Speaker 9: done a pretty good job protecting it. I know he
- 41:38Speaker 9: had to fumble last week, but... The one interception he
- 41:42Speaker 9: took a hit as he threw it. I'll say really
- 41:45Speaker 9: one turnover this year for him. His decision-making is really good.
- 41:49Speaker 9: The weapons are there. I think with what they're doing
- 41:52Speaker 9: now and what he's giving them now, I think it's
- 41:54Speaker 9: good enough to compete in this conference. To win it,
- 41:58Speaker 9: maybe to be a playoff team, maybe you need another
- 42:00Speaker 9: level up. I think he's been pretty good so far.
- 42:03Speaker 1: Handicapping the Big 12 Conference in general, we learned a
- 42:07Speaker 1: little bit more about Houston and Texas Tech with the
- 42:09Speaker 1: game last Friday. BYU still looking good. Utah still looking
- 42:14Speaker 1: really good. West Virginia might have one of maybe the
- 42:17Speaker 1: most dynamic quarterback in the whole conference. I wasn't expecting that.
- 42:21Speaker 1: And they get Nakari Rogers. We just learned that this week.
- 42:24Speaker 1: So as you look at kind of the power structure
- 42:27Speaker 1: of the Big 12 as it's shuffling out in these
- 42:29Speaker 1: first three weeks heading into week four, how do you
- 42:32Speaker 1: see it?
- 42:34Speaker 9: The top hasn't changed much for me, Sean. I thought
- 42:37Speaker 9: Tech would take a little bit of a step back,
- 42:39Speaker 9: and I think they have. They're still very good, but
- 42:41Speaker 9: I don't think they're quite as good as they were
- 42:42Speaker 9: last year, especially defensively. BYU kind of is what they are.
- 42:48Speaker 9: They are just a good, well-rounded, solid football team. I
- 42:51Speaker 9: think this is what I expected from Utah. I said
- 42:54Speaker 9: before the season the gap between Tech, BYU, and Utah
- 42:58Speaker 9: was very, very close.
- 43:00Speaker 6: They may all be.
- 43:01Speaker 9: Almost on that same plane. It was that next level.
- 43:03Speaker 9: I think Houston's the best of that next group. I
- 43:06Speaker 9: think I was more impressed with their loss than Tech's
- 43:09Speaker 9: win last weekend at Lubbock. I think they're going to
- 43:12Speaker 9: be a tough out for Utah when they come here
- 43:15Speaker 9: in about a month or so. I still think Arizona's good.
- 43:18Speaker 9: Here's the team to keep an eye on, Sean, for me.
- 43:20Speaker 9: I think West Virginia's been a nice surprise with Rich Rod.
- 43:24Speaker 9: They've got a great running back in Cam Cook and
- 43:26Speaker 9: Michael Hawkins. They're running back or their quarterback, but keep
- 43:28Speaker 9: an eye on K-State. K-State does not have to play Utah,
- 43:32Speaker 9: they do not have to play BYU, and they do
- 43:34Speaker 9: not have to play Texas Tech in the regular season.
- 43:38Speaker 9: That's a pretty favorable schedule for Colin Klein. Kansas State's
- 43:42Speaker 9: always good, they're physical, they're tough. But not to have
- 43:46Speaker 9: to play any of those three teams in the regular
- 43:49Speaker 9: season is a pretty big deal. I'm still not sold
- 43:52Speaker 9: on Avery Johnson, their quarterback, even though he's been around forever.
- 43:56Speaker 9: But I think K-State could be a sneaky team that
- 43:59Speaker 9: maybe if a Utah or a BYU or a Tech
- 44:02Speaker 9: stumbles a little bit somewhere along the line, might be
- 44:05Speaker 9: a team that could sneak into Dallas.
- 44:07Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 44:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I think we're going to have to keep a
- 44:10Speaker 1: closer eye on some of those what I had thought
- 44:12Speaker 1: in the preseason were fringe teams and now They've got
- 44:16Speaker 1: the players to potentially make that conversation go a little
- 44:19Speaker 1: bit differently. I put a poll question out based on
- 44:22Speaker 1: the century-plus drought of conference championships for Iowa State. And
- 44:28Speaker 1: you and I have both rooted for teams that have
- 44:30Speaker 1: gone through extensive droughts. But when you put on, not
- 44:34Speaker 1: your voice of anything hat, you put on a fan
- 44:37Speaker 1: hat like you do for your Royals and your Chiefs,
- 44:41Speaker 1: How many years does the drought of no championships have
- 44:44Speaker 1: to extend before emotionally you give up on the hope
- 44:47Speaker 1: of a championship? Now, you're always going to remain a
- 44:50Speaker 1: fan of your lifelong teams, but where you're not watching
- 44:53Speaker 1: it because you think they can win it anymore. How
- 44:56Speaker 1: long does that drought have to extend for Bill Riley?
- 45:00Speaker 9: Well, I mean, with the Royals, it extended a really,
- 45:03Speaker 9: really long time. And they won a championship about 10
- 45:06Speaker 9: years ago. To be fair with the Chiefs, I didn't
- 45:10Speaker 9: think they would ever win a championship. I really didn't
- 45:12Speaker 9: in my lifetime because their quarterback, their ability to find
- 45:15Speaker 9: a quarterback or washed up 49er quarterbacks was their plan
- 45:19Speaker 9: for so many years. And then the football gods blessed
- 45:23Speaker 9: us with Mahomes. I think it's different in college because
- 45:26Speaker 9: there's different levels. Like the Iowa State fans, they're always
- 45:30Speaker 9: going to love Iowa State. I don't think that they're
- 45:32Speaker 9: going in expecting to win conference championships, but if it happens,
- 45:35Speaker 9: it's great. With pro teams, I think if half your
- 45:40Speaker 9: lifetime goes by and you never see a championship, then
- 45:44Speaker 9: I think that's when the depression and the reality probably
- 45:47Speaker 9: begins to set in.
- 45:48Speaker 2: HandylawUtah.com.
- 45:50Speaker 1: Preston and Garrett Handy have been helping out our listeners
- 45:54Speaker 1: and us for a very, very long time. Let them
- 45:57Speaker 1: know that you heard about it on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 45:59Speaker 1: You heard about it in the conversation with Bill Riley.
- 46:01Speaker 1: If you have any legal questions at all, HandylawUtah.com.
- 46:05Speaker 2: It's BigFirm.com. but small, firm attention.
- 46:09Speaker 1: It is the perfect recipe from guys who have decades
- 46:12Speaker 1: of experience helping out clients right here in Salt Lake City.
- 46:17Speaker 4: And we promise Bill has nice things to say about it.
- 46:19Speaker 4: You've heard of it other weeks when we've had him on.
- 46:21Speaker 4: He's had great things to say about Handy and Andy,
- 46:23Speaker 4: maybe some spotty cell service there.
- 46:25Speaker 1: If we're going to lose cell service with Bill, he's
- 46:27Speaker 1: probably driving out to the airport. He's probably out near airport,
- 46:31Speaker 1: you know, near the millionaire terminal right now, which is
- 46:35Speaker 1: he's getting... interference on his communications, most likely. So maybe
- 46:40Speaker 1: some pilots meowing or something.
- 46:42Speaker 2: Big thanks to bill for joining us.
- 46:45Speaker 1: A big thanks to handy law, Utah, handy and handy
- 46:48Speaker 1: for making that possible every single week. Obviously good luck
- 46:50Speaker 1: to bill on the call. Have a nice call bill Riley.
- 46:52Speaker 1: If you're still able to hear us, it is Utah
- 46:55Speaker 1: versus Iowa state. We'll look at this matchup by the numbers.
- 46:59Speaker 1: I referred to some numbers in that conversation with Bill.
- 47:02Speaker 1: We'll get deeper into it. We've got PGA Tour leaderboard updates.
- 47:05Speaker 1: We've got a lot left to get to here on
- 47:07Speaker 1: the Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 47:21Speaker 3: Welcome to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch Hyundai
- 47:26Speaker 3: Studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 47:36Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 792.1 FM,
- 47:40Speaker 1: getting you ready for Utah versus Iowa State tomorrow at
- 47:43Speaker 1: Jack Trice Stadium. You don't like to hear what Bill
- 47:47Speaker 1: just said, that the, yeah, it's rainy, but also the
- 47:49Speaker 1: field being in bad shape.
- 47:51Speaker 2: That's not fun. Although I think Utah will be fine
- 47:56Speaker 2: either way.
- 47:57Speaker 1: The thing is, if there's a massive talent disparity between
- 48:02Speaker 1: the two teams, the less talented team probably wants that
- 48:07Speaker 1: to be an ugly game, right? That's an advantage for
- 48:09Speaker 1: the slower team, the less talented team. I don't know
- 48:14Speaker 1: that there's enough of a disparity between these two teams.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Utah's got plenty of speed. Iowa State's got plenty of speed.
- 48:23Speaker 1: Utah's also got a more established tradition of physicality along
- 48:28Speaker 1: the front lines, so they should be okay even in
- 48:32Speaker 1: yucky weather and on a slippery, muddy field. The thing is,
- 48:37Speaker 1: the reason I keep saying it and keep going back
- 48:39Speaker 1: to it, there's no excuse, right?
- 48:43Speaker 2: It doesn't matter.
- 48:44Speaker 1: Nobody cares if you had a gross, ugly game. Nobody
- 48:48Speaker 1: cares that the margin for error is not built in
- 48:51Speaker 1: for big 12 teams. It is not built in for
- 48:54Speaker 1: Morgan Scali in his first year. It is not built
- 48:56Speaker 1: in for a team that is ranked 15th in the
- 48:59Speaker 1: country right now. It's just not, there's nobody. If, if
- 49:02Speaker 1: you're Ohio state or you're Texas or you're old miss
- 49:07Speaker 1: or LSU, people will give you the benefit of the doubt. Oh,
- 49:11Speaker 1: you're Notre Dame. And you had that bad game on
- 49:13Speaker 1: a muddy field. against Northern Illinois or whatever.
- 49:16Speaker 2: All right.
- 49:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 49:17Speaker 2: That maybe that wasn't a true indication of who you are.
- 49:20Speaker 1: Utah doesn't get that benefit of the doubt, not in
- 49:23Speaker 1: Morgan Scali's first year.
- 49:24Speaker 2: So there's no excuse built in.
- 49:26Speaker 1: If, if we're coming on the show on Monday and
- 49:30Speaker 1: we're talking about, Hey, yeah, they didn't win because the
- 49:32Speaker 1: field was muddy.
- 49:36Speaker 2: That's a lie. It's inaccurate. It's an excuse. It's stupid.
- 49:42Speaker 1: So we're not going to do that. I don't think
- 49:45Speaker 1: we're going to have to do it more importantly. So
- 49:49Speaker 1: what is Iowa state by the numbers? We've talked about
- 49:51Speaker 1: where Utah sits in terms of scoring offense and scoring defense.
- 49:55Speaker 1: And again, all of this sort of balances out as
- 49:58Speaker 1: the season progresses, but Utah right now is the number
- 50:00Speaker 1: one scoring defense in the conference. They've given up eight
- 50:03Speaker 1: points per game on average to their opponents. Utah has
- 50:08Speaker 1: only given up three touchdowns to the opposition this year.
- 50:11Speaker 2: Guess what?
- 50:12Speaker 1: Same is true for Iowa state. Iowa state has surrendered
- 50:16Speaker 1: three touchdowns on the season. They've given up four field
- 50:19Speaker 1: goals where Utah has only given up one. That is
- 50:22Speaker 1: the difference right now between Iowa state and Utah. The
- 50:25Speaker 1: margins are very small right now in this race, Utah,
- 50:28Speaker 1: number one, TCU, number two, they've given up one extra
- 50:32Speaker 1: field goal that Utah has not Kansas state. has also
- 50:36Speaker 1: only given up three touchdowns, Iowa State. So the top
- 50:39Speaker 1: four defenses right now in terms of scoring defense in
- 50:42Speaker 1: the conference have given up three touchdowns apiece. Baylor's given
- 50:47Speaker 1: up five, BYU's given up six. Scoring offense, Utah at
- 50:57Speaker 1: number one in the conference right now. Iowa State, their
- 51:01Speaker 1: average has gotten pulled way down by that, That's Cy
- 51:05Speaker 1: Hawk trophy game by the game against Iowa. Iowa state
- 51:11Speaker 1: has scored 13 touchdowns on the year.
- 51:13Speaker 2: They've given up three. They've scored 13. They've given up three.
- 51:16Speaker 1: Utah has scored 19 touchdowns on the year. Houston, Kansas state, BYU,
- 51:22Speaker 1: Cincinnati have all given, have all scored 18 touchdowns of
- 51:25Speaker 1: their own. So Utah has more touchdowns than anybody in
- 51:28Speaker 1: the conference so far. A thing that I've been nitpicking
- 51:32Speaker 1: over is how many sacks Utah has been able to generate.
- 51:36Speaker 1: They're fourth in the conference right now. They've been able
- 51:40Speaker 1: to pull in nine sacks. Iowa State has only had
- 51:43Speaker 1: six sacks through three games, so their pass rush is
- 51:46Speaker 1: not all that formidable. Both Utah and Iowa State have
- 51:51Speaker 1: given up two sacks to the opposition. Now, that means
- 51:54Speaker 1: a lot more when you're talking about Iowa State having
- 51:57Speaker 1: played against Iowa. That's a ranked Big Ten team. That's
- 52:01Speaker 1: a team that has produced over the years some good
- 52:04Speaker 1: pass rushers. I'm not going to lie to you and
- 52:06Speaker 1: pretend whether I know Iowa Hawkeye personnel enough that they
- 52:11Speaker 1: have a great NFL-bound pass rusher or blitzer or anything
- 52:14Speaker 1: like that. Through three games, Iowa State, Utah, and BYU,
- 52:19Speaker 1: also in West Virginia, they've all given up two sacks.
- 52:23Speaker 2: To the opposition so far.
- 52:25Speaker 1: Kansas State right now alone at the top. The Wildcats
- 52:29Speaker 1: of Kansas State have surrendered zero sacks on the season
- 52:34Speaker 1: as we head into Big 12 play in earnest. We've
- 52:39Speaker 1: talked about, more importantly, the rankings of the specific units
- 52:46Speaker 1: in terms of what they're giving up through the passing
- 52:48Speaker 1: game and what they're giving up through the run game.
- 52:51Speaker 1: Right now, Iowa State, it's kind of a weird... So
- 52:54Speaker 1: if you go to the... I use CFB stats, right?
- 52:57Speaker 1: That gives you these list, these comparatives. Iowa State ranks
- 53:02Speaker 1: currently number two in the Big 12 Conference in passing defense.
- 53:09Speaker 2: Kansas State has given up nothing so far.
- 53:12Speaker 1: Kansas State in three games has given up 260 yards
- 53:15Speaker 1: to the opposition in passing. You know how ridiculous that
- 53:18Speaker 1: is through three games? In passing, they are giving up
- 53:22Speaker 1: 86 yards per game in passing defense. I can't tell
- 53:28Speaker 1: you how many times we have sat here and pounded
- 53:30Speaker 1: our chest over the idea that Utah gives up fewer
- 53:32Speaker 1: than a hundred yards per game in rushing, but in passing,
- 53:37Speaker 1: that is ridiculous. And it's not something they're going to
- 53:39Speaker 1: be able to sustain through the course of a season.
- 53:41Speaker 1: Iowa state is surrendering 143 yards a game in passing.
- 53:44Speaker 1: You have to look at the other numbers though, because
- 53:47Speaker 1: Iowa and Iowa state slugged it out on the ground.
- 53:51Speaker 1: It was not a passing offense type game, right? Iowa
- 53:55Speaker 1: and Iowa state. ended up 16, 13. This was not
- 54:00Speaker 1: a game that was going to lend anybody to statistical success.
- 54:05Speaker 1: Iowa state is only giving up 143 yards a game,
- 54:09Speaker 1: but they are allowing their opposition to complete 63% of
- 54:13Speaker 1: the passes, 63 and a half percent of passes. That's
- 54:19Speaker 1: second worst in the conference right now. So Passing efficiency
- 54:24Speaker 1: for Utah is something that is very attainable, very possible,
- 54:29Speaker 1: and honestly, probably very necessary this week.
- 54:33Speaker 2: How much do they give up actively, if that's how
- 54:36Speaker 2: much they give up in passing?
- 54:38Speaker 1: I see what you mean there. And I dock you 1,000
- 54:41Speaker 1: James Peterson points.
- 54:42Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 54:43Speaker 6: Sorry.
- 54:44Speaker 2: Oh, no. You're back down to about 50,000. If you
- 54:45Speaker 2: were Tony Reale, you might have hit the mute button.
- 54:49Speaker 2: If I had one, James? I probably would. I've got
- 54:54Speaker 2: the mute button. Now that passing percentage, right?
- 54:59Speaker 1: That they allow means that Devin Dampier should be able
- 55:03Speaker 1: to find the necessary windows. If bird Franklin's throwing the ball,
- 55:05Speaker 1: it should be able to find the necessary windows. They
- 55:08Speaker 1: do swarm to the ball pretty effectively. They're pretty solid
- 55:11Speaker 1: at running to the ball and tackling not as good
- 55:13Speaker 1: as Utah is. Utah is only allowing a 4.6 yards
- 55:17Speaker 1: per attempt to the opposition right now, Iowa state ranks.
- 55:20Speaker 1: They tie for fifth in the conference. with 5.8 yards
- 55:24Speaker 1: per attempt for their opposition. Iowa State has intercepted their
- 55:28Speaker 1: opponents twice so far this year. BYU leads the conference
- 55:35Speaker 1: in that category. They've intercepted five balls already. Utah sitting
- 55:40Speaker 1: at three. So, look, I'm giving you these numbers because
- 55:48Speaker 1: we don't have And apples and apples kind.
- 55:51Speaker 2: Of three-game sample size from both of these teams.
- 55:54Speaker 1: So you have to compare what they did against who
- 55:56Speaker 1: they did against and try to get you an extrapolation
- 56:00Speaker 1: that is meaningful for this football game.
- 56:02Speaker 2: At the end of the day, Utah is a more
- 56:06Speaker 2: stable roster.
- 56:07Speaker 1: Even with all the turnover they had, they're a far
- 56:10Speaker 1: more stable roster than Iowa State. Iowa State has an
- 56:14Speaker 1: entirely new football program. They've got a new coaching staff.
- 56:18Speaker 1: They have a new roster. They have overperformed expectations through
- 56:22Speaker 1: three weeks. It is time for Utah football to silence
- 56:26Speaker 1: that narrative and say, better luck next year. It is
- 56:31Speaker 1: an absolutely unforgivable sin even to go into a road
- 56:35Speaker 1: environment in the rain and lose to a team that
- 56:38Speaker 1: has 83 new players. If it were 63, that would
- 56:44Speaker 1: still be something you can't get over. If it were 53,
- 56:46Speaker 1: it'd be something you'd be like, you have to beat
- 56:49Speaker 1: that team. 83 new guys is an entirely new roster.
- 56:58Speaker 1: 80% of your roster are guys that were not at
- 57:01Speaker 1: Iowa state last year. Now, some of those guys are
- 57:03Speaker 1: going to be better than what they had last year.
- 57:05Speaker 1: A lot of them are going to be rough equivalents
- 57:07Speaker 1: or worse. You cannot take this team more seriously than
- 57:12Speaker 1: their record and their stat sheet and their roster makes
- 57:17Speaker 1: you take them absolutely go out there, establish dominance, Put
- 57:23Speaker 1: your foot in the ground, put your hand in their face,
- 57:26Speaker 1: and push them around.
- 57:27Speaker 2: This is not enough of a team to beat Utah.
- 57:30Speaker 2: It just isn't. Have they done some nice things?
- 57:33Speaker 3: Yes.
- 57:33Speaker 1: Is Aiden Flora their running back? Is he a revelation?
- 57:37Speaker 1: Is he a surprise? Is he a good player? Is
- 57:39Speaker 1: he somebody that you'd like to see on a Utah roster?
- 57:42Speaker 3: Of course.
- 57:43Speaker 1: They're going to have six or seven guys that are
- 57:45Speaker 1: like that. But you don't need six or seven to
- 57:47Speaker 1: beat Utah. You need 22. And really when you factor
- 57:51Speaker 1: in kickers and punters and return men and stuff, you
- 57:54Speaker 1: probably need more like 35. I keep, I keep trying
- 58:00Speaker 1: to talk myself into a reason why we should take
- 58:02Speaker 1: this game seriously. As a fan base, the, the, the
- 58:07Speaker 1: team has to take it seriously. Why I should say, yeah,
- 58:10Speaker 1: you know what? Iowa state, they're dangerous. Iowa state, you
- 58:13Speaker 1: got to worry about them. You don't on paper. You
- 58:18Speaker 1: should dominate this game. You should go out and whoop
- 58:21Speaker 1: them on their home field.
- 58:24Speaker 2: Credit to them for playing the Hawkeyes tough.
- 58:27Speaker 1: Credit to Jimmy Rogers for getting as much cohesiveness as
- 58:30Speaker 1: we have seen in a short amount of time for
- 58:33Speaker 1: a brand new remade roster. For Morgan Scali and Devin
- 58:37Speaker 1: Dampier and Bird Ficklin and Trey Reynolds and Jai Moy,
- 58:42Speaker 1: you need to go out there and you need to
- 58:44Speaker 1: slap these guys around and tell them, You are not
- 58:48Speaker 1: ready for this version of Big 12 football, and we are.
- 58:52Speaker 2: It is the only acceptable outcome for this football game.
- 58:55Speaker 1: All right, we'll take a quick one here. We're going
- 59:04Speaker 1: to come back with a leaderboard update, an injury report.
- 59:11Speaker 1: and a little bit more. Then we get the Daily Dump.
- 59:13Speaker 1: Then we get Lee Sterling. Then we get Coordinator's Corner.
- 59:16Speaker 1: We are rolling on a Friday. Don't forget, at 1.30,
- 59:19Speaker 1: the airing of grievances. It's the Sean O'Connell Show on
- 59:22Speaker 1: Utah's number one sports talk, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 59:34Speaker 3: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 59:38Speaker 3: best inside of your Utes. Let's get back to OC
- 59:41Speaker 3: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 59:58Speaker 1: You guys know how much I love to hear the
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: sound of my own voice. I'd rather be quiet for
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: once and listen to Metallica. Metallica is coming to Rice
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: Echo Stadium in June. Tickets are on sale right now. Ticketmaster.com.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: Get your tickets. This will sell out. We're going to
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: have to call in some favors and find a way
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: to get to this one. Oh, Metallica in concert at
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: Rice Echo Stadium coming up next year, next summer.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: Can't ask for anything better.
- 1:00:30Speaker 8: Woo.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: Ticketmaster.com for tickets right now. All right.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: Let's hit a PGA tour leaderboard update from the president's
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: cup brought to you by you went to golf by
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: worldwide golf in store visits for free custom fitting at
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: you went to golf. You can also shop online at
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: worldwide golf.com. I prefer that you go into the store.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: You tell them you heard about it on the Sean
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: O'Connell show. You take advantage of, of the apparel sales
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: happening right now. They've got the team pride collegiate apparel
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: collections out carts, bags, golf balls, shoes, range finders, step counters,
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: all the tech you could ever need. They'll help you
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: shape out your golf game at worldwide golf. You went
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: to golf by worldwide golf. All right, James, this leaderboard
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: on the president's cup is probably something that we don't
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: have the Rosetta stone to translate.
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: But go ahead.
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm going to do my best here. Everyone knows,
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: everyone listening knows, golf expert over here. So I'll be
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: able to help you figure it out.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: It took a.
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: While to find the actual leaderboard, but I got it,
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: all right? So we've got yesterday's scores I can give
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: you because they're just teeing off now for day two action.
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: Yesterday's scores... The United States is up 3-2 after yesterday's
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: four ball.
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: Scotty Scheffler.
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: And their group won, and now the page changed, and
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: now I've got today's whatever.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: So I don't have all of yesterday's matchups. I can
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: tell you U.S. is up 3-2.
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: The matchups for today, Scotty Scheffler, Sam Burns versus Corey
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: Connors and Nikki Taylor. That's the international pairing. They're just
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: about to tee off. Russell Henley, Jacob Bridgman taking on
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: Sung Jae Im and Hideki Matsuyama. They're the international pairing.
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: That's about 12-20 at about 12-30.
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: U.S.
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: Pairing Colin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark versus Ryan Fox and Minwoo
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: Lee from the international side.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: And around 12-45, the U.S.
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: Pairing is Justin Thomas, Cam Young versus the international pairing
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: of Adam Scott and Christian Bazunhot.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: Which I no doubt just butchered that.
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: And then around one, the Americans, Patrick Cantlay, Sandra Shoffley
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: versus the international Tom Kim and Siwoo Kim.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: So that's your schedule for today.
- 1:03:05Speaker 6: U.S.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: Up 3-2 after one day. It's more foursomes today. All right.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: That is your PGA Tour leaderboard update brought to you
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: by You Went to Golf.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: Great stuff.
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: The next one, we'll do one more of these. We
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: should have some scores today. By then, in about an hour.
- 1:03:22Speaker 10: All right.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: I'll take it. Appreciate you doing that. I told you, James,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: to pull this up yesterday. The Joel Klatt sound, him
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: talking about Utah football. So I'll give you a second,
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: see if you can dig that thing up for me.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: I never got to it on the show yesterday. And
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: this is something, it's really interesting. I try to get
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: away from it, honestly, but I can't. There's just a
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: feeling when you get recognition from from the top names
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: in sports media, the national guys, right? The podcasters and
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: the broadcasters that have an audience that goes.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: Coast to coast. I should probably apologize. Northern border to
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: southern border. Joel Klatt is one of those guys.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: Obviously, he's the number one analyst on Fox, and I
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: think he does a great job, and I'm a huge
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: fan of the way that he approaches analyzing the game
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: of football. not only in game when he's on the
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: broadcast with Gus Johnson, but also the way that he analyzes,
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: you know, teams after studying the film and watching the games,
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: even the ones he's not broadcasting and adjusting his expectations
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: and his opinion based on what he sees and not
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: what the narrative in college football is. This is something that,
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: you know, we all are unfortunately prone to groupthink and
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: where you start to develop biases conscious or otherwise from
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: what you read about a team, what you see about
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: a team, what you're told about a conference and things
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: like that. And it's, it's actually a lot more difficult
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: to remove those biases, remove those influences and just observe
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: the blank slate of what these teams really are. I
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: think Joel does a good job of doing that for
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: the most part. And there were a lot of people who,
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: Heading into the offseason, who when they saw the disarray
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: and the changeover mess at the University of Utah, they
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: were like, OK, well, now what is Utah football going
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: to be? And there are seemingly like split opinions on
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: whether or not Morgan Scali will smoothly handle his first
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: year as a head coach. and whether or not a
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: team like Utah, a franchise like Utah, a program like
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: Utah will be able to survive the departure of a
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: 21-year head coach who's a legend and is the best
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: to have done it over such a long time and
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: is universally respected in the college football world and all
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: those things. And we're still keeping one eye on what
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: happens at Michigan, but it's all about Utah football now.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: And the Kyle Whittingham belief and the Kyle Whittingham sort
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: of consistency, the opinion transferred over to Michigan and everyone's like,
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: this is going to be great.
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: This is going to work.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: And there was only half of the country that still
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: wanted to pay attention to Utah and still wanted to
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: know about whether or not Utah was going to be,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: you know, in this conversation that Morgan Scali, to his credit,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: has kept them in, has put them right back in
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: at 3-0 on the season and performing well on the
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: offensive side of the ball in a way that is
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: atypical of Utah football. And was something that was great
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: to see last year and was great to see in
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: the Pac-12 championship years. But it's not the belief that
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: people typically carry for Utah football. So when Joel Klatt
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: reexamines his position from April to August to now late
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: September on what Utah football is supposed to be this year.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: He's doing it based on what he sees, based on
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: what he observes, based on the conversations I know he's having.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: And not just, oh, well, look, they're 3-0.
- 1:07:06Speaker 6: So, yeah.
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: Because there's a lot of 3-0 teams in college football
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: right now. If you're a power conference team that schedules
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: with any kind of acumen, you probably are 3-0 right now.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: We're asking whether or not, you know, Kansas State is
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: great and West Virginia is also good.
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: Cincinnati's 3-0 right now, right?
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: The record can only tell you so much when you've
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: got three games under the belt. Utah is getting more
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: respect now, not just because the record says what it is,
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: but because how these games are being won and because
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: of what it looks like on film. And when you've
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: got experienced guys who know how to evaluate this game,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: saying things like, hey, guess what's back?
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: Death taxes in Utah football.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: I can't help, but get a little bit giddy is
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: the wrong word, but get a little bit, you know, okay.
- 1:08:04Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: Is this confirming a bias? I I'm always biased towards
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: the home of the Utes. I'm on the home of
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: the Utes, right? So here's Joe clout on Utah football
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: and then take it.
- 1:08:15Speaker 11: I've had them again in my top 10, each of
- 1:08:18Speaker 11: the last two weeks, uh, I see the comments down
- 1:08:22Speaker 11: there in the, in the YouTube page. If you haven't
- 1:08:24Speaker 11: subscribed to the show, you should subscribe to the show,
- 1:08:26Speaker 11: leave a comment. And there's a lot of people like, Oh,
- 1:08:28Speaker 11: Utah's opponents are combined to one and eight. So are Georgia's,
- 1:08:33Speaker 11: you know, like nobody's playing quality opponents right now outside
- 1:08:36Speaker 11: of like the Texas Ohio state game.
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: Ole miss has played quality opponents. Like who is anybody beat?
- 1:08:41Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:08:42Speaker 11: It's not an excuse, and certainly I'd rather see better games.
- 1:08:45Speaker 11: But what should you do then if you're a great
- 1:08:47Speaker 11: team and you're playing a schedule like that and you're
- 1:08:49Speaker 11: out there and you're playing Jones Junior High School? What
- 1:08:52Speaker 11: should you do? You should be dominant. And that's exactly
- 1:08:54Speaker 11: what Utah has been able to do. They've been the
- 1:08:56Speaker 11: most impressive team in the Big 12 thus far.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: Hands down.
- 1:09:00Speaker 11: I know BYU fans will be upset at that. And
- 1:09:03Speaker 11: Texas tech fans are like, well, what about us? We
- 1:09:04Speaker 11: spent all that money yet. That team is not as
- 1:09:07Speaker 11: good as Utah.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: Make that your ringtone. If you're a Utah fan.
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: And it's, it's Joel Klatt telling you some of the
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: same things that we've been trying to tell you, or
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: that I think I've been trying to tell you. And
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: it just, when it comes from a neutral observer, it
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: just like you add more weight to it. It's, it's crazy.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: Cause I want you to be like, yeah, if OC
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: says it about Utah, it's true. But I also acknowledge that,
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: you know, I'm an alumni. I'm a guy who knows,
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: I feel like I have personal friendships on, on the staff.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: That can compromise whether or not you think you're getting
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: like objective observations here.
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: I don't think we question that with Joel Klatt.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: I don't think we question whether or not, you know,
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: that guy has any kind of agenda when it comes
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: to talking Utah football. So his top 10 and the
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: AP top 10 and the coaches top 10 always look different.
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: And his right now have Utah and he says they
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: are the most impressive team in the Big 12 conference.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: And you can look at the film and you can
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: say or you can point to reasons why he feels
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: that way. And it's exciting to know that they're getting
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: a little bit of attention from one of those most.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: Respected national voices.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: Now, all it is through three weeks, and I think
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: he touched on this a little bit in that sound bite,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: is all it is is just you're beating what was
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: in front of you. You got to do it again
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: in Ames. You got to do it again back home
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: against the Kansas team that I don't think is all
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: that good. You got to do it against Houston. got
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: to do it against BYU most importantly. If you do
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: it against all those opponents before BYU comes to town,
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: we're talking, and I know we've discussed this already, we
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: are talking one of the biggest Holy War matchups that
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: has ever happened. If you go undefeated against Iowa State, Kansas, Colorado, Houston,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: and Cincinnati, which are all very, very winnable games, Even
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: if you drop one to, like, Cincinnati or Houston before BYU,
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: and BYU is either going to be 7-0 or 6-1
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: when that game happens, right?
- 1:11:24Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: They've got Notre Dame on the schedule. I mean, we're
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: talking two top 15 teams squaring off and... full control
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: of the big 12 conference championship, one spot in the
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: big 12 conference championship race, potentially on the line.
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: There could be two top 10 teams at the highest.
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: If they're both undefeated, especially if BYU, that means BYU
- 1:11:49Speaker 4: beats Notre Dame, right? So they're certainly going to be
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: top 10, maybe even higher.
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: I mean, if they'll be in the top five.
- 1:11:55Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: So and then Utah eight, no, they'll have maybe a
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: ranked win over Houston in there. Maybe Houston's unranked, but
- 1:12:05Speaker 4: just in the others receiving votes by October 24th. I mean,
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: that might be two top 10 teams, certainly two top
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: 15 teams, and maybe the biggest Holy war matchup as
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: far as highest ranking between the two teams that we've
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: ever happened. If that's the case, I mean, A lot
- 1:12:27Speaker 4: of football will be played. Until then, we're about six
- 1:12:31Speaker 4: weeks away.
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: Five, six weeks away? It's hard not to be dreaming
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: about that kind of a scenario, OC.
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: What else are we dreaming about?
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: What's the Sunday night football game this weekend here, James?
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: Should be a good one. Rams-Broncos.
- 1:12:52Speaker 4: Depending on if the Broncos start the season that's not
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: been great, if they're able to turn it around.
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: Should be a good match.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: Rams are two and a half point favorites for this one.
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: It is taking place in Denver. And look, this is
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: a Broncos team that they got to look. The Jaguars
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: are now a quality team. Jaguars are good. That's a
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: playoff caliber team. Broncos beat the Jags last weekend. And
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: now they've got the Rams. So you find out a
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: lot more about their level of readiness. Also tough slate
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: for the Broncos here in the early season. Chiefs, that's
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: a game they lost and they looked pretty terrible in
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: doing it. They beat the Jags, Rams at Niners. That's
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: probably one of the tougher first four game schedules that
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: you're going to find in the AFC and maybe in
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: the NFL at large. They've got a little break against
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: the Chargers if the Chargers continue to stink after that.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: And then it's Seahawks after that one.
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: So, yeah. And by the way, the Broncos....
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: Playing in these feature spots against teams like the Rams
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: as a side B side, but, but still the Broncos,
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: there's high expectations for that team. And if Bo Nix
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: can live up to what he is capable of, I
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: think those are reasonable expectations. I think that they should
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: be among the top three or four teams in the AFC.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: They got work to do though, to prove that right.
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: And the Rams last week showed me that the Rams,
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: even though they won't have miles Garrett, and Aaron Donald
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: playing together as of.
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: Yet, and maybe Puka Nakua, we'll see. But the thing
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: that you.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: Have to remember with the Rams that I hilariously and
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: stupidly forget sometimes is that even when they don't have
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: every one of those other guys available, they've got a
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: league MVP quarterback. And whether he's throwing to Devante Adams
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: or Puka Nakua or Joe Schmoe, Like, they protect him well,
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: and he's a league MVP quarterback with one of the
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: best passing credential accomplishment lists in the history of NFL football.
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: And then you mentioned we're doing this with, oh, well,
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: they don't have Miles Garrett.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: Well, but they have Aaron Donald healthy. Oh, well, they
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: don't have Puka Nakua. Oh, but they have Devontae Adams.
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: If you have one or the other of those guys...
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: you're still better off than most rosters in the NFL.
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: If you have both of them at the same time,
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: it's pretty ridiculous.
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: That's why they're prohibitive Superbowl favorites.
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: And then, and then when you look at like, so
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: when it's not an, if it's a, when, when you
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: get the first Rams game where they have Matthew Stafford,
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: future hall of famer, Devante Adams, borderline hall of famer,
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: Puka Nakua, potential hall of famer, Aaron Donald, sure thing,
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: hall of famer, miles Garrett, sure thing, hall of famer, And,
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: you know, like the other quality pieces, Trent McDuffie.
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: Nate Landman is unbelievable, right?
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: Like you have, when you have all of that on
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: the field all at once, we're going to be like,
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: oh yeah, this is why we were talking about the
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: Rams the way we talked about the Rams for the Broncos. You,
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: you have to win this game now. It's your only
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: matchup with them. Obviously they're, you know, AFC, NFC, they're
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: not a divisional opponent. If you get this win over
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: the Rams now, you have a Set yourself up to say,
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: all right, we could potentially see them in a Super Bowl, maybe,
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: but look what we did.
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: We beat the Rams. That's a confidence builder. That's something.
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: And you didn't beat the real Rams, the full-strength Rams,
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: but you beat the Rams, and that's a feather in
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: your cap one way or another.
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: Do it now. Get them while you can.
- 1:16:35Speaker 6: All right?
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: I'll say that. My Niners did that in Melbourne.
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: If you want to treat it like it's not a
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: real game, Sean McVay, if you want to do this
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: stupid fly late thing, if you don't want to bring
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: Aaron Donald and you don't want to show respect to
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: the San Francisco 49ers like they can beat you in
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: week one, fine.
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: Get that win while you can for the Niners.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: It means a lot more than for the Broncos because
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: it's a divisional opponent and all those types of things.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: But if you're the Broncos, get this one while you can,
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: because there's going to be at least a few games
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: this year. I don't think it's going to be all
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: that many, but at least a few games this year
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: where whoever rolls into LA or whoever welcomes LA is
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: playing against the team with like six future hall of
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: famers on the field at once.
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: That's gross.
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: That's Sunday night football matchup Rams versus Broncos. And before
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: we get to the daily dump time for an injury report,
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: you love this from big 12 football mandatory when it's
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: a big 12 game. So for the rest of the
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: season for Utah, you will have the injury report and
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: hopefully it never looks worse than this knock on wood.
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: It's never a lot of people out knock on wood.
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: It's never a lot of Probables, questionables, things like that.
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: Injury reports are brought to you by our friends at
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: The Advocates, 801-355-5550. You did not deserve to be in
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: an accident. You do deserve an advocate. And if you're
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: just wondering whether or not you have a case and
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: you don't really have any level of expertise on what
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: counts or what doesn't count, or if, you know, I
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: rear-ended that person, but were they stopping at the right time?
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: It felt like it was their fault, even though everyone's
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: telling me it was my fault.
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: 801-355-5550, especially if you're dealing with medical bills, especially if
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: you've had a hard time getting back to work, let
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: the advocates do exactly what their name says.
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: Advocate for you.
- 1:18:33Speaker 6: 801-355-5550.
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: The average settlement in cases where the advocates are representing
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: the victim is It's the best numbers you're going to
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: find in all of the Utah personal injury space.
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: They have a better track record.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: Than any other firm when it comes to maximizing the
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: earnings for people who've been.
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: In an accident. So 801-355-5550.
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: The Utah injury report against Iowa State, Marcus Wimberly still out.
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: Kidai Lopez still out.
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: Ike Garcia, who's been battling injuries, and this, unfortunately, has
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: become now the narrative of his career.
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: Yeah, he's downgraded from questionable, by the way.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: He was questionable yesterday, and now he is out. So
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: that stinks, and you want it to be kind of
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: a precautionary.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: Thing, but.
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: Honestly, with the way that everyone else is playing along
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: this offensive line, with the way that the battles have
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: really played themselves out and what Cedric Jefferson's been doing,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: especially like Ike Garcia cannot afford this.
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: This is another season lost.
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: Even if it's not like a season ending injury or
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: this is not anything that's career threatening or whatever, you
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: can't afford to not be available. And that stinks for
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: Ike Garcia because this has now become the narrative that
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: of his football career. He was a big get when
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: he came out of corner Canyon and he's a guy
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: that they have a lot of belief in and they
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: have a lot of hope for his future and his potential,
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: but the best available, the best ability is availability. And
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: he is not unfortunately right now, probable for the game
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: who were upgraded. I guess you would say from questionable
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: Monica bio, Carson, Cal Fousey, Cash Dillon was not on
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: their injury report yesterday. Cash Dillon is listed as probable.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: So he's more than likely going to go. And he's
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: an important part of that four-man rotation at defensive end.
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: It's him and Lance Holzclaw and Ethan Day.
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: Wait, him? Lance Holzclaw. Yeah, Cash Dillon, Lance, Paul Fitzgerald.
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: Excuse me. So you need him back. You want him back.
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: Yeah, so interesting, he wasn't on yesterday's injury report, the
- 1:20:56Speaker 4: initial one, not even questionable, but now showing up as probable,
- 1:21:01Speaker 4: so some kind of nagging thing he's dealing with, but
- 1:21:05Speaker 4: it's a good thing that he's.
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: Probable, not questionable, certainly not out. He'll certainly be out there.
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: And the only reason he would appear as probable when
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: he didn't appear at all yesterday would be he was
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: a he was limited in practice in something.
- 1:21:18Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: He must've had treatment during practice or something like that.
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: That's the only reason why you would put them on
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: after not having enlisted before. So that, that, that has
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: to be the explanation and, you know, cash Dylan, cash
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: Dylan's a tough dude and he's going to play through pain.
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: If it's a serious injury, that's limiting his production.
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: You knock on wood that that's not the case. Then
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: maybe we'll see something change there.
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: Something else notable about this update real quick.
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: OC is, uh, Like, Iowa State trimmed down theirs significantly.
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: They had like half.
- 1:21:52Speaker 4: Their team listed on the injury report. Most of them
- 1:21:55Speaker 4: out or questionable. A handful of guys probable. Now, what,
- 1:22:00Speaker 4: four guys out, two listed as questionable, two probable. So
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: I guess a lot of guys got healthy in 24 hours.
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: I don't know. Congrats, Iowa State. Well done. Must have
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: used the.
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: Never mind, I won't say that. I don't want to
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: be accused of something. The Daily Dump is coming up next.
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: That injury report is brought to you by our friends
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: at The Advocates, 801-355-5550.
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: Daily Dump next.
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: Another big name entering the chat for MLB expansion in
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: the state of Utah.
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: Let's discuss. Utah's number one sports talk, ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: Feeling out of the loop? Let's catch up on today's
- 1:22:47Speaker 3: biggest headlines in the Daily News Dump, where we flush
- 1:22:50Speaker 3: out the biggest stories of the day on the Sean
- 1:22:53Speaker 3: O'Connell Show and Utah's number one sports talk, ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:22:59Speaker 3: Brought to you by Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. Just
- 1:23:02Speaker 3: look for the truck with the duck.
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: Ryan Smith has vowed to make an aggressive push for
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: major league baseball expansion in Utah.
- 1:23:23Speaker 6: What?
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: 877-353-0700.
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: That's how you get ahold of us on the text line.
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: The daily dump is brought to you by Valley plumbing, heating,
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: and cooling every single day here on the Sean O'Connell show.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: If you need excavation help, they can help you with
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: that as well.
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: Look for the truck with the duck.
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: Uh, when you say, well, and you hear this, it's
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: because for a year plus now, big league, Utah major
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: league push for the state of Utah has been something
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: that falls squarely in the purview of the, the.
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: Miller family, Gail Miller and company.
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: Ryan Smith and Smith Entertainment Group are entering the chat
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: in what looks like kind of the 11th hour here
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: because we've had so many developments. The site for the ballpark,
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: the proposals, we've all seen the drafts. The site is
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: out there. The approval has come through for public funding,
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: for state approved funding. The reason that the group is
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: so appealing, the Miller Group has been so appealing is
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: because it's not leaning.
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: Too heavily on public funds.
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: They've pledge what three plus billion dollars of corporate money
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: to get this development underway. And all of those things
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: have been speaking to major league baseball as reasons to
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: give a franchise to salt Lake city and to the
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: Miller's specifically to the Miller specifically Ryan Smith told a
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: front office sports and, um, and said, look, we're, we're
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: going to be aggressive in the push. Now, I hope
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: when he says we are going to be aggressive, I
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: hope he means I'm going to join the Miller investment group.
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: Yeah, his name was on Big League Utah initially. Do
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: you remember that?
- 1:25:15Speaker 4: They had the list of celebrities and business owners and
- 1:25:18Speaker 4: whatever that say, yeah, we're.
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: Going to put our name to this. We're going to
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: be part of this. I don't know if it's still there.
- 1:25:24Speaker 4: And to be fair about this, it's kind of speculation
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: that he's going to go and Smith entertainment group is
- 1:25:31Speaker 4: going to go and do this on their own because
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: in the front office sports interview, he doesn't directly say
- 1:25:38Speaker 4: it's going to be us versus the Miller's bid competing
- 1:25:41Speaker 4: bids there, but he also doesn't say it won't be.
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: So it's very interesting.
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: So look, I know that there are a lot of
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: people who are not fans of Ryan Smith and all
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: of like the, I want state funds to help out with,
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: I'm a sports guy, so I'm not going to surprise
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: any of you when I say I'm kind of a
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: by any means necessary sort of an individual to get
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: us an NHL franchise. He did that to make things
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: better for the Utah Jazz.
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: I think he's doing that right now.
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: Major League Baseball, if you want to serve the interests
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: of the people in the state, and there has been
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: from the Miller Group and I think in a genuine
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: way from Smith Entertainment Group, there's been a sort of
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: mentality of stewardship on some level, and that's a good thing.
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: Are they gainfully employed?
- 1:26:33Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: Are they making money off of these things?
- 1:26:35Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: Are they making insane amounts of money off of these things?
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: We assume so. We presume so. I think so. But
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: I don't think that's evil. I don't think it's bad
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: to make money off of owning a sports franchise. You're
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: taking an immense amount of risk, and you're shouldering that yourself,
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: and you're being rewarded for it.
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: Fine.
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: We're not going to have an economics discussion here on
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: the Sean O'Connell Show, but.
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: What is in the best interest of the state of
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: Utah is to make sure that this bid gets across
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: the finish line. And that I think is more easily
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: done on a unified front than on major league baseball
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: being like, well, wait a second. We can get the
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: Millers and the Smith entertainment group to bid against one
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: another for this expansion fee. The expansion fee estimate is
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: something around three, two and a half to $ 3 billion.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: That's just to get the franchise. And then you're going
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: to have to pay for the ballpark. You're going to
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: have to pay for the roster. You're going to have
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: to pay for everything else. Ryan Smith's own personal net
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: worth is not in the tens of billions of dollars.
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: It's like in that $ 3 billion range, right?
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: I'm not going to pretend to know the machinations of
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: how you raise enough capital and what banks and investors
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: you talk to.
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: And you put your name on the front of it.
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: However, I hope what he's talking about when he says
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: our group is going to be aggressive is that it's me.
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: And the Miller's our group.
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: Big league, Utah. I'm going to be part of that.
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: Cause that, that serves us best.
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: That serves the rank and file, the folks that are
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: not smart enough to be the billionaires to buy these
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: things in the first place.
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: It serves the community best.
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: If you have this long established sort of old money
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: for lack of a better term, a universally respected entity
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: in the Miller corporation who has a history of successful
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: sports ownership. They got out of it and they want
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: to get back into it. And you combine that with
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: kind of like this, like wunderkind, like young hip, whatever,
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: you know, by, by league owner standards and new money,
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: new money, like, Hey, like, but, but success so far, right. They,
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: you have to give credit where it's due in the NHL.
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: Everyone in NHL circles is like, they are doing it
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: right in Utah. What they've given these players, what they've
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: given this fan base, what they've given back to the NHL.
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: It's being rewarded with a Winter Classic and three years
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: of a franchise's existence. The practice facility down at Southtown.
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: All of these things are things you don't have to do.
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: And even if you have to do them, you don't
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: have to do them right away. And they're doing them
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: right now. You don't want to see this become a
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: competition between the Miller Group and Smith Entertainment Group. The
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: only people who benefit from that, the only.
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: Body that benefits from that is major league baseball, because
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: then they can drive up their fees and potentially right.
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: Whoever else wants to be involved in this minority owners
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: and things like that, instead of all being put into
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: one pool, having those things split up and having someone
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: who's like, let's say you're like a kind of like
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: third place level investor. You're, you're like, okay, you know,
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: I'll use the owner of this corporation, Deloitte Hanson, who's
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: been involved in sports ownership for in the past, like
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: Deloitte Hanson's got the kind of weight that he can
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: throw around. Not probably not to buy his own major
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: league baseball franchise. It hasn't been his business MO in
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: the past at like an investment that big, he would
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: buy in smaller major league baseball. You can't buy in smaller, right?
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: So would he want to be like a minority owner?
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: Would he want to say like, give me 10% of this?
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: And we, we don't know for sure. Just using it
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: as an example, using it as an, let's say he's like, okay,
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: it's going to be, It's going to be $ 2. 5 billion
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: for the franchise expansion.
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: You know what?
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: I got $ 250 million on that. Let me throw in
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: some money here. And the Millers are like, okay, throw
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: it in with us. And Ryan Smith is like, no,
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: throw it in with me.
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: We'll use it better. Major League Baseball likes us more.
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: Put it in with me instead.
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: And now you're potentially diluting this pool of investors or
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: potential investors between two competing bodies instead of having them
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: all on one front and Major League Baseball being like,
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: this is the biggest no-brainer ever. So that's my hope
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: that Smith Entertainment Group and the Millers are going to
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: Voltron up and just be like, yeah, we're the best
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: sports ownership group in the Western United States.
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: Yeah, and Ryan Smith was a minority owner of the
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: Jazz under... Gail Miller and the Miller Sports and Entertainment
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: before he bought the majority share of the team five,
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: six years ago now.
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: They obviously have a relationship. They've got a relationship.
- 1:31:23Speaker 4: You would think that he and his company would be
- 1:31:27Speaker 4: open to partnering again, but we'll see. This almost implies
- 1:31:33Speaker 4: that it might be a competing bid. I'm with you, though.
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: I think it'd be better if it's a partnership. I think.
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: I think this is just a clever omission of language
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: to be like, yeah, this is actually me bringing it
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: when really it's the Miller's bringing it.
- 1:31:47Speaker 4: You know, like you just want wanting to get his
- 1:31:51Speaker 4: name out there more.
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: Maybe catching a little shine off of that, you know, potentially.
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: I don't know. Wouldn't be the first billionaire to try
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: to do that. Ryan Smith on the phone. Ryan, 877-353-0700.
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: Give us a call. crazy stuff or Texas, your number.
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: Uh, did you hear about the potential communications interruption that
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: both Texas and Tennessee have been expected or been told
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: to told to expect in their big matchup this weekend,
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: Arch Manning going back to, uh, the, the site of the,
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: the scene of the crime where Peyton Manning, of course
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: helped put Tennessee football back on the map. And, um,
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: They obviously wanted him to come play at Tennessee. He
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: ended up going to Texas. It'll be his first time
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: playing at Neyland stadium. And, uh, president Trump is going
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: to be the celebrity guest picker on college game day.
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: He is going to be there at the game. Apparently.
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: I mean, Tennessee's orange colors. So makes a lot of sense. Okay.
- 1:33:01Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:33:01Speaker 4: Just leave that there. Um, very presidential looking colors for Tennessee.
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: The, The teams have been informed that at any time
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: during the game, your communications like booth to sideline, whatever,
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: at any time, these things can be cut off in
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: the interest of national security. If there's a feeling that
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: the president's safety or the security of the executive branch
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: is compromised because of whatever else, then... the secret service
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: and the presidential detail have the ability to basically shut
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: down radio communications, electronic communications in a certain vicinity so
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: that only their stuff.
- 1:33:51Speaker 6: Is there.
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: So there's no radio interference.
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: There's no communication interference so that the ear pieces you
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: see in the, you know, behind the ear of that guy,
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: you know, walking next to the president with the fake
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: arm and he's got his real arm inside the jacket
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: where he's carrying the submachine.
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: Gun or whatever.
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: Like that guy's radio has to work. So your offensive
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: coordinators radio can be shut off.
- 1:34:13Speaker 5: Wow.
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: It's not expected that they will have to do this,
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: but both teams have been informed that that's part of
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: having the president at a game. And I might have
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: to preempt all communications beyond this. And by the way,
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: it could affect a television broadcast also, but or radio
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: to be fair, to be fair to this, right? This is,
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: being sensationalized a little bit. And I probably am adding
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: to it. Presidents for years and years and years and
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: years have been showing up at sporting events without it
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: interrupting anything meaningful.
- 1:34:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:34:46Speaker 4: It's just, they have to tell these, they have to
- 1:34:49Speaker 4: disclose that it could, it could interrupt and we have
- 1:34:52Speaker 4: to have priority, which is totally reasonable.
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: Like the, the security of.
- 1:34:57Speaker 4: The president, United States certainly needs to have priority priority
- 1:35:00Speaker 4: over anything else in any event.
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: Can you imagine?
- 1:35:03Speaker 4: I just, I just thought of this. You know all
- 1:35:05Speaker 4: the consternation around the president going to the NBA Finals game?
- 1:35:12Speaker 4: And NBA teams don't have to have those radio frequencies, right?
- 1:35:17Speaker 4: Can you imagine what it would have been like if
- 1:35:21Speaker 4: something like that happened at an NBA Finals game? He
- 1:35:27Speaker 4: went to the Super Bowl a couple years ago, too, right?
- 1:35:29Speaker 4: Can you imagine if that happened– People were so up
- 1:35:34Speaker 4: in arms about the inconveniences that came with Trump going
- 1:35:37Speaker 4: to the NBA Finals, and nothing actually got interrupted. So
- 1:35:41Speaker 4: imagine if something does get interrupted. It did mess with
- 1:35:44Speaker 4: travel for people. Travel got interrupted. But as far as
- 1:35:47Speaker 4: the actual game, nothing really got interrupted.
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: Security at the game was a nightmare, apparently. And it's
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: harder to get in and out. And they ramp up
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: security and things like that. So, look, it's just part
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: of the deal. What they usually do, the president will
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: move locations in the stadium or come in or out
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: of the stadium during television timeouts.
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: On purpose.
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: They try to coordinate these things as much as possible
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: in any kind of emergency situation where it's like, you know,
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: the president's got to go to the bathroom right now
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: and there's no bathroom up here. Then they would have
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: to cut Steve Sarkeesian's headset. And that would be crazy.
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: But I mean, we just played it.
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: What game was it this year that they started the
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: games at Florida state, right?
- 1:36:27Speaker 6: Oh yeah.
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: They played a game of Florida state with like no communication. Yeah,
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: that's right.
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: They were using like old fashioned walkie talkies. The headsets
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: weren't working. The clock wasn't working. ESPN broadcast limited power.
- 1:36:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: It was totally interrupted too.
- 1:36:44Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: So you had a little, you've had that. All right.
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: We got to take a break. Lee Sterling's going to
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: join us next. That's your daily dump brought to you
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: by Valley plumbing, heating, and cooling. Look for the truck
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: with the duck and tell them OC sent you Lee
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: Sterling to give us the picks for the weekend. Next
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: on ESPN, 700 and 92, one FF.
- 1:37:05Speaker 3: You're tuned to The Sean O'Connell Show for the Murdoch
- 1:37:08Speaker 3: Chevrolet Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell show. Welcome in the
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: number one handicapper in the business, Lee Sterling, paramount sports
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: friend of the show to give us picks for the weekend.
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: Lee, welcome back. How are you, sir?
- 1:37:40Speaker 6: I'm great.
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: Can't complain.
- 1:37:42Speaker 12: I'm close to you. I'm in park city for the weekend. Uh,
- 1:37:45Speaker 12: my niece is getting married in Salt Lake city. So
- 1:37:48Speaker 12: why not come out here and play a little golf and, uh,
- 1:37:52Speaker 12: get relaxed and.
- 1:37:53Speaker 8: Uh, I might even take in that Utah.
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: State game on Saturday night. Love it.
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: It's a beautiful day, as I'm sure you're aware, and
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: hopefully it stays that way for the weekend.
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: Let's get right to it. You just mentioned Utah State.
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: The Aggies coming off a blanking by the University of Utah,
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: but they are three-point favorites against Troy. How does it
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: play out?
- 1:38:16Speaker 12: Well, you better like defense.
- 1:38:17Speaker 8: Cause I don't, I don't think you're going to see
- 1:38:18Speaker 8: much scoring Troy.
- 1:38:20Speaker 5: They just don't have any playmakers.
- 1:38:21Speaker 12: I mean, they were winning the war at the line
- 1:38:24Speaker 12: of scrimmage, believe it or not against Missouri, but penalties
- 1:38:27Speaker 12: hurt them. They just couldn't come up with that one play.
- 1:38:31Speaker 12: You know, when, when they were within the touchdown, Utah state,
- 1:38:35Speaker 12: we know about their struggles. Quarterback play hasn't been good,
- 1:38:38Speaker 12: but I think jumping down in class, it's like when
- 1:38:40Speaker 12: you go to a horse race and you steer a horse,
- 1:38:43Speaker 12: it's been losing, but he's been going up against the
- 1:38:46Speaker 12: top horses. And then he comes back down and he
- 1:38:48Speaker 12: might be able to do.
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: The job and, and win.
- 1:38:51Speaker 8: It's not going to be pretty defensive struggle.
- 1:38:54Speaker 12: I like Utah state here, 10, six, a big game.
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: We were just talking about this, you know, potential communications
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: interruption while the president is moving in or out of
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: the stadium and Texas and Tennessee are both going to
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: have to prepare for it.
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: You got game day, the whole shebang, the big circus.
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: Texas, obviously they've, they've already tested themselves against elite competition.
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: Once this year, victory against Ohio state, they are five
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: and a half point favorites at Neyland stadium. That's a
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: lot to cover in a tough environment.
- 1:39:25Speaker 8: It is. And I was originally thinking Texas.
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: Might be the play.
- 1:39:29Speaker 8: They got talent galore, but let's look at what they
- 1:39:31Speaker 8: do on the road.
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: They go to Ohio.
- 1:39:34Speaker 12: State last year, lose 14, seven.
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: Okay. Not the worst horse.
- 1:39:38Speaker 12: Then they go to Florida, who was bad last year,
- 1:39:40Speaker 12: lost 29-21 and got dominated. They get blown out at
- 1:39:44Speaker 12: Georgia 35-10. And then the last two games, they're playing
- 1:39:49Speaker 12: SEC bottom feeders on the road, Mississippi State and Kentucky.
- 1:39:54Speaker 12: They had to force overtime and win the game in overtime.
- 1:39:58Speaker 12: Five straight bad performances on the road here. I know
- 1:40:01Speaker 12: they came back against Ohio State, but maybe Ohio State
- 1:40:05Speaker 12: was a little overrated. I watched a tape on Tennessee,
- 1:40:08Speaker 12: and I think their offensive line is stout. They got
- 1:40:12Speaker 12: some big boys that like to mix it up, and
- 1:40:14Speaker 12: you got to move some big boys on the Texas
- 1:40:16Speaker 12: defensive line.
- 1:40:17Speaker 8: And they got some Ed rushers who they brought in
- 1:40:20Speaker 8: through the portal who I think are good here.
- 1:40:22Speaker 12: I think the wrong team is favored. Tennessee has not
- 1:40:25Speaker 12: beaten a number one team since 1985.
- 1:40:28Speaker 8: They're going to do it again.
- 1:40:29Speaker 12: Tennessee straight up 28, 27.
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: That would be an upset. That'll throw college football on
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: its head.
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: I love that.
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: We need a little chaos this weekend and all these
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: ranked versus ranked matchups. Another one near and dear to
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: the former PAC 12 fans hearts. Oregon is three point
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: favorites against USC. I'm actually going to Southern California this
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: This weekend, I'm debating on whether or not I want
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: to make the trip to the Coliseum and watch this
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: one in person. The Ducks, obviously they've had their warts.
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: They've had their problems and a loss to Oklahoma State.
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: USC has looked better than a lot of people gave
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: them credit for, but still Oregon is a favorite.
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: How do you see it?
- 1:41:10Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:41:11Speaker 12: Yeah, Oregon's underperformed. Let's just be honest. They got a
- 1:41:14Speaker 12: bunch of four and five stars. Got to play better.
- 1:41:16Speaker 12: I think most of it's because they have new coordinators.
- 1:41:18Speaker 12: Sometimes it takes half a season, a season for everyone
- 1:41:22Speaker 12: to figure out their roles. All it takes is one
- 1:41:24Speaker 12: guy to make a mess up. And that's what's happening
- 1:41:27Speaker 12: right now, both on offense and defense for Oregon with
- 1:41:30Speaker 12: new coordinators. So I think they're going to get closer
- 1:41:33Speaker 12: and closer to being a top team, but they got
- 1:41:35Speaker 12: to do it quick. They lose here and they're out.
- 1:41:38Speaker 12: USC's offense is scary good. Ducks have already faced a
- 1:41:43Speaker 12: quarterback probably that's going to go in the first round,
- 1:41:45Speaker 12: a Drew Mestemaker from Oklahoma State. The problem and usually
- 1:41:49Speaker 12: your weakest link.
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: Is what costs you the game.
- 1:41:52Speaker 8: And I think that's the USC defense.
- 1:41:53Speaker 12: They give up 30 points to Louisiana Lafayette, 35 points
- 1:41:58Speaker 12: and 460 yards to Rutgers, and 26 points to San
- 1:42:03Speaker 12: Jose State here.
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: I think it's a Ducks call here.
- 1:42:06Speaker 5: Ducks here, 38-28.
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: All right, we'll save the best for last with this
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: Utah-Iowa State game. Jumping into the NFL, the Saints are
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: three-point favorites against a surprise 2-0 Raiders team.
- 1:42:18Speaker 2: Can Shuck beat Cousins?
- 1:42:21Speaker 12: He can, but remember this, Kirk Cousins faced his defense
- 1:42:25Speaker 12: twice last year. And I think that's an advantage here.
- 1:42:31Speaker 12: I think the Saints are going to have to run
- 1:42:33Speaker 12: the ball better if they want to have a chance.
- 1:42:35Speaker 12: You see with a better coach. I mean, the coaching
- 1:42:37Speaker 12: for the Raiders has been horrific for the last decade.
- 1:42:40Speaker 12: I think they found their guy here. I think they're
- 1:42:42Speaker 12: going to get the run game going. Even special teams
- 1:42:45Speaker 12: might be an advantage. I think the wrong team's favorite here, too.
- 1:42:47Speaker 12: The Raiders here win straight.
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: Up here 24-20.
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: Your game of the week is Seahawks, who, of course,
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: are going to be playing a backup against the Commanders,
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: whose starting quarterback dislocated his elbow. So not the premier
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: matchup that the fans of either of these teams probably
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: expected when they saw this one on the schedule. The
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: defending Super Bowl champs are seven-point favorites in your game.
- 1:43:11Speaker 5: Of the week.
- 1:43:12Speaker 12: Yeah, and if they want to get it for free,
- 1:43:14Speaker 12: just call 800-400-9741. I think there's a clear right side.
- 1:43:18Speaker 12: So will the Seahawks blow them out, or can Marcus
- 1:43:21Speaker 12: Mariota keep it close or maybe pull off the shocker?
- 1:43:24Speaker 12: First five callers get it for free. Just call 800-400-9741
- 1:43:29Speaker 12: to get it for free. And what a role we've
- 1:43:31Speaker 12: been on here. Four straight winning weeks for our clients.
- 1:43:35Speaker 12: My biggest play of the year goes on Saturday. It's
- 1:43:37Speaker 12: a game no one's looking at. I think the line's
- 1:43:40Speaker 12: off by two or three touchdowns. So we've been waiting
- 1:43:43Speaker 12: for this game. Everything looks perfect, the weather, the matchup,
- 1:43:47Speaker 12: the injuries. We're 74-32 on our 40-50 unit max wager.
- 1:43:52Speaker 12: So if you want to get involved, check out all
- 1:43:54Speaker 12: the different options, ParamountSports.com.
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: All right, we'll close it out with, of course, the Utes.
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: This line moved a little bit, started off big. It's
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: now gone down seven and a half, settled at eight.
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: Utes are eight-point favorites on the road at Iowa State.
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: We've got all those newcomers, a new coach. It might
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: be a little bit rainy, and we just had Bill Riley,
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: voice of the Utes, on. He's been told that the
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: field is in bad shape. I don't know how much
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: that really changes anything. But Utah, more than a touchdown
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: favorite in their first road game of the year, Lee.
- 1:44:27Speaker 12: Well, I think it does favor Iowa State a little bit.
- 1:44:29Speaker 12: They're going to try to muck this game up. They
- 1:44:31Speaker 12: want to shorten the game. They want to run the football. And,
- 1:44:36Speaker 12: you know, you've got a great quarterback in Utah that
- 1:44:40Speaker 12: can run the football, and you slow him down a
- 1:44:42Speaker 12: little bit, certainly helps.
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: You out here.
- 1:44:45Speaker 8: Iowa State, I thought it was going to take them until.
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: Midseason, until they'd be competitive. But, boy, was I wrong.
- 1:44:50Speaker 12: They went into Iowa, almost won the game, held this
- 1:44:53Speaker 12: Iowa offense. which has improved to just 284 total yards here.
- 1:44:58Speaker 12: You know, we know that Iowa was ranked 21. Utah's
- 1:45:02Speaker 12: not that much higher at 15. And like I said,
- 1:45:05Speaker 12: the running game for Iowa State, pretty good also. Special
- 1:45:08Speaker 12: teams are solid here. I think the line's a little high,
- 1:45:11Speaker 12: and I think the public and also the Sharps figured
- 1:45:14Speaker 12: it out and moved it down from over double digits
- 1:45:17Speaker 12: to eight points here. I think Utah wins the game, 26-23,
- 1:45:21Speaker 12: but I think eight points is probably the right side
- 1:45:23Speaker 12: here in taking Iowa State.
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: All right, so Utah wins, but Iowa State covers. If
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: you're playing for fun, you care about the line. If
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: you're playing or you're watching because you're a fan, all
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: you care about is that win. So everybody can go
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: home happy, and Lee Sterling does that for you with
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: Paramount Sports.
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: 800-400-9741.
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: Lee, I'm bummed out. If I had known you were
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: in town and I was staying in town, I'd have,
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: I don't know, gone golfing with you or taking you
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: to breakfast or something, but we'll have to catch up
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: next time.
- 1:45:52Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:45:54Speaker 8: Well, it's a short trip.
- 1:45:55Speaker 12: I had to come in Wednesday night. My nieces get married.
- 1:45:58Speaker 12: My nieces and nephews know the rule. Don't get married
- 1:46:02Speaker 12: during football season, but they wanted to do it. And
- 1:46:06Speaker 12: she has a special place in my heart. Unfortunately, my
- 1:46:08Speaker 12: younger sister died 14 years ago and she's had a
- 1:46:12Speaker 12: rough time. So I got to be here for her.
- 1:46:15Speaker 12: So got to do what you got to do, but
- 1:46:16Speaker 12: I'll be back for a couple of weeks during the summer.
- 1:46:19Speaker 12: We'll play some golf and we'll certainly hit a couple.
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: Of top restaurants. Lee, you're the man.
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: Enjoy the family weekend. Thanks for your time. You too, buddy.
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: Take care.
- 1:46:32Speaker 3: 800-400-9741.
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: He says Iowa State will cover, but Utah will win.
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: We've got our number three coming here on a Friday.
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: Coordinator's Corner with Kevin McGibbon. Brought to you by Mountain
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: Home Services and airing of grievances following that. So get

- 1:47:00Speaker 1: brought to you by Mountain Home Services in Coordinator's Corner,
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: right here on the Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:47:08Speaker 3: Let's dive into this week's matchup in the Coordinator's Corner
- 1:47:12Speaker 3: of the Sean O'Connell Show. OC chats with the coordinators
- 1:47:16Speaker 3: every week of the Utah football season. On your home
- 1:47:19Speaker 3: of the Utes and your home for football, ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:47:24Speaker 10: Coordinator's Corner time here on the Sean O'Connell Show, and
- 1:47:31Speaker 10: this week we get to talk about the mastermind, of
- 1:47:34Speaker 10: the Utah offense, Kevin McGiven, more affectionately referred to as
- 1:47:38Speaker 10: Mac G joins us once again, here on your home
- 1:47:41Speaker 10: of the youth coach.
- 1:47:43Speaker 2: Welcome.
- 1:47:44Speaker 6: How are you? Good, good. How's things going, man?
- 1:47:47Speaker 2: Great.
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: You got a three and oh football team that makes
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: my job pretty easy. 33, zero victory over the Utah
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: state Aggies, obviously a program, a team, a coaching staff.
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: that you know well, just, you know, your initial thoughts
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: on that performance from your offense, and then we'll get
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: to some more of the details here, but 33-0, not
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: much for us to complain about.
- 1:48:12Speaker 6: Yeah, no, obviously, just coming out with a win and
- 1:48:17Speaker 6: the 3-0 start, always difficult to play against, you know,
- 1:48:23Speaker 6: former team and coaching staff, just with players, you know,
- 1:48:27Speaker 6: and um, and coaches that you want to see successful and,
- 1:48:31Speaker 6: you know, the, uh, I think probably helpful in terms
- 1:48:35Speaker 6: of our understanding going into that game of, of what
- 1:48:37Speaker 6: that battle was going to be like in terms of, um,
- 1:48:40Speaker 6: the culture that I know they have up there. Bronco
- 1:48:42Speaker 6: is to me, one of the best in the, in
- 1:48:45Speaker 6: the profession, um, at establishing that just a great leader
- 1:48:49Speaker 6: of men and was fortunate enough to work with him
- 1:48:51Speaker 6: for a year. And then, and then even understanding, um, Nick,
- 1:48:54Speaker 6: how a little bit, you know, never game plan for when, um, necessarily, but,
- 1:48:59Speaker 6: Got to see how he runs his defense. I just
- 1:49:01Speaker 6: can't say enough about Nick Howell. He's an unbelievable defense coordinator.
- 1:49:08Speaker 6: Had those guys ready to play, I knew they would be,
- 1:49:13Speaker 6: but had a good plan for us that made some
- 1:49:15Speaker 6: things happen. difficult as we went along. They were making
- 1:49:18Speaker 6: us earn everything, but glad we were able to come
- 1:49:21Speaker 6: out of it with a win.
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: You did come out of it with a win, and
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: obviously you had a good, strong start to this game.
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: Got on the board early, and 16 points in the
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: first quarter, 10 in the second quarter. We'll get to
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: the second half here in just a second, but The
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: sort of hot start, a successful first drive, the scoring
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: drive and all that, did you feel like it went
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: sort of according to plan? Were you getting any looks
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: that you didn't expect, and did you have to adjust
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: on the fly, or was that early script kind of
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: according to what you hoped it would be?
- 1:49:53Speaker 6: Yeah, I think early on kind of going as planned,
- 1:49:57Speaker 6: but there were some things in there even worse. even
- 1:49:59Speaker 6: within first drive and subsequent drives in the first half
- 1:50:04Speaker 6: where we had gotten off schedule a little bit, because
- 1:50:05Speaker 6: I think even that first score might have been on
- 1:50:07Speaker 6: the third down, like a third and long. And so
- 1:50:11Speaker 6: that part of it where you're able to capitalize in
- 1:50:13Speaker 6: the third down situation, but even getting to that point
- 1:50:17Speaker 6: and Kind of been atypical thus far because we were
- 1:50:21Speaker 6: in third down a lot more in this game than
- 1:50:24Speaker 6: we had been in the previous games. And so there
- 1:50:26Speaker 6: were some things in there definitely that we had to
- 1:50:28Speaker 6: earn in getting off schedule a little bit where that's
- 1:50:30Speaker 6: not typically where, you know, now you're going to the
- 1:50:33Speaker 6: situational menu and it's not necessarily on schedule or on script.
- 1:50:38Speaker 6: You know, when things are going really, really well and
- 1:50:41Speaker 6: it's just– First down, second down, first down, you know,
- 1:50:44Speaker 6: and not, not getting to those situations, but it's a
- 1:50:47Speaker 6: little bit easier for the game.
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: Braden Pagan had a monster game as he's shown us.
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: He's very capable of doing eight catches, 122 yards, a
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: couple of touchdowns. And of course it's against. his former
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: team and, you know, former teammates and things like that.
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: And it seemed like there was mostly friendly banter going
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: back and forth, but was this, you know, was that
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: part of the game plan coming in? I, I, I don't,
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: I don't picture like, Oh, let's go out and make
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: sure Braden Pagan gets extra work against the Aggies.
- 1:51:18Speaker 2: But man, he really went off.
- 1:51:20Speaker 6: Yeah, no, I, I think, I think you said it,
- 1:51:23Speaker 6: you know, BP is a focal point of the offense,
- 1:51:26Speaker 6: you know, but it's kind of one of those things
- 1:51:28Speaker 6: where you can get off track with a lot of
- 1:51:31Speaker 6: the guys we have. You can get off track a
- 1:51:33Speaker 6: little bit in terms of who is getting touches and opportunities.
- 1:51:38Speaker 6: You really like to see the distribution, and I've been
- 1:51:40Speaker 6: pleased with that up to this point that a lot
- 1:51:42Speaker 6: of guys have gotten opportunities, you know, either receivers getting
- 1:51:46Speaker 6: targets or guys getting carries in different ways, and and
- 1:51:49Speaker 6: things like that. But, you know, and so in the
- 1:51:51Speaker 6: last game, you know, there weren't as many that went
- 1:51:54Speaker 6: BP's way. And, and so, you know, it wasn't, it
- 1:51:58Speaker 6: was nice to see him get in some isolated situations.
- 1:52:01Speaker 6: There was, there was an intent there, I think, based
- 1:52:03Speaker 6: on some of, some of the looks that we were
- 1:52:06Speaker 6: seeing in terms of getting him access throws that, you know,
- 1:52:09Speaker 6: we could throw underneath them and kind of buy our
- 1:52:11Speaker 6: time a little bit to, to be able to create
- 1:52:13Speaker 6: some opportunities for him to, you know, throw the ball,
- 1:52:16Speaker 6: push the ball down the field on some verticals and
- 1:52:18Speaker 6: things like that. But we're able to get him involved
- 1:52:20Speaker 6: in some ways with, with access throws off, off of
- 1:52:23Speaker 6: different looks that they got him involved early. So, and
- 1:52:27Speaker 6: I know he was, he was very motivated to do so.
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: The, your defense obviously played incredibly well. Also when you
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: blank an opponent, it hasn't happened against an FBS opponent
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: at the university of Utah last since 2019, and you
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: guys were able to pull that off. When the defense
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: is humming that way and stopping the opposition for putting
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: any points on the board or even getting across midfield
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: in a couple of situations, how much does it do
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: for you in play calling?
- 1:52:56Speaker 6: Yeah, I think there is a comfortability when your defense
- 1:53:02Speaker 6: is playing that well, and it's so fun to, even
- 1:53:06Speaker 6: sometimes between series, I catch myself just kind of looking
- 1:53:10Speaker 6: up at the defense and watching them when I probably
- 1:53:13Speaker 6: should be like planning, planning the next drive, but just,
- 1:53:17Speaker 6: you know, the culture that we, that we have and
- 1:53:20Speaker 6: the way, the way our, our defense plays, the way
- 1:53:22Speaker 6: coach Swanee calls it and the aggressiveness it's, it's really,
- 1:53:26Speaker 6: really fun to watch. And there is a comfort level there.
- 1:53:29Speaker 6: I don't ever want to put myself in a position
- 1:53:31Speaker 6: where you feel like you're having to rely on the defense,
- 1:53:33Speaker 6: but But knowing that the defense is playing well and
- 1:53:36Speaker 6: if you get into a situation where now you're playing
- 1:53:38Speaker 6: a little bit of field position battle, things like that.
- 1:53:43Speaker 6: But I think there's always an intent to play complementary
- 1:53:46Speaker 6: football based on... what's happening with the defense and what
- 1:53:51Speaker 6: you've got to do offensively just to ensure wins, you know,
- 1:53:55Speaker 6: sometimes to ensure situations where they can stay off the
- 1:53:59Speaker 6: field a little bit. But, you know, when they're out
- 1:54:01Speaker 6: there and, you know, they're getting on and off early,
- 1:54:03Speaker 6: you feel like you can be pretty aggressive.
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: You were able to bust a couple of big runs. Obviously,
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: Daniel Bray's long one stands. Way Sean Parker gets called back, which,
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: what a heartbreaker. But then, you know, it was like,
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: it was some tough work to gain yards on the
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: ground as we thought it might be against this Utah
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: state defense. Now that you've had a chance to look
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: back at the film, what do you guys need to
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: do to be a little bit more efficient running the ball,
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: especially between the tackles and maybe what, what is the
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: plan moving forward against an Iowa state defense that is
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: obviously going to have watched this film also?
- 1:54:39Speaker 6: Yeah, I think it was, I think it was good
- 1:54:41Speaker 6: preparation in terms of the, again, I had mentioned it, the,
- 1:54:45Speaker 6: the culture that I know Utah state has and the
- 1:54:47Speaker 6: physicality that they play with. And especially those, those guys.
- 1:54:51Speaker 6: up front and in the box, but they, but even
- 1:54:53Speaker 6: their back end, I thought they did a good job,
- 1:54:55Speaker 6: really good job coming downhill and, and, and making open
- 1:54:58Speaker 6: field tackles. I thought they tackled really, really well. So,
- 1:55:00Speaker 6: so even when we caught a crease and got loose, um,
- 1:55:04Speaker 6: it wasn't necessarily going very far when it, when it
- 1:55:06Speaker 6: got to the third level, because these guys were, were
- 1:55:08Speaker 6: tackling really well. But, um, you know, I think a
- 1:55:10Speaker 6: lot of the issues just, um, you know, some, some
- 1:55:13Speaker 6: communication may be coming off late on some, some combinations, but, um,
- 1:55:18Speaker 6: you know, some communication on, on targeting that we've got
- 1:55:20Speaker 6: to get cleaned up a little bit where there were
- 1:55:21Speaker 6: some opportunities there were, you know, when, when you're, when
- 1:55:25Speaker 6: you're looking at it just structurally where you have a,
- 1:55:28Speaker 6: at least an efficient run, potentially explosive runs. And, and
- 1:55:32Speaker 6: because of some of the communication that didn't, it didn't
- 1:55:34Speaker 6: go anywhere. Um, so a little bit disheartening, but things
- 1:55:38Speaker 6: that we got to get cleaned up that way with
- 1:55:40Speaker 6: our communication up front and then, and then just, um,
- 1:55:43Speaker 6: you know, I think we were physical at the point
- 1:55:46Speaker 6: of attack in that game. We got to finish a
- 1:55:48Speaker 6: little bit better, you know, cause that again, Utah state
- 1:55:51Speaker 6: did a really good job, you know, just shedding initial
- 1:55:54Speaker 6: contact and then, and then playing to the football. So
- 1:55:57Speaker 6: we just got to get stickier on some of those blocks.
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: The communication aspect as you, you guys have been rotating
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: on the offensive line and that can make it difficult,
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: but also you want five, six, seven, eight guys to
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: be able to have like true starter reps and, before
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: you solidify whatever this final five is going to be. And,
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: you know, there's, there's flux throughout a season based on
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: health and whatever else. But if you had to like
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: weigh out with their, the physical ability, the, you know,
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: like the actual gameplay and the, the smoothness in which
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: these guys are able to communicate the cohesiveness and in
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: which an individual fits into the overall group, how much
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: will that play into people earning a spot and maintaining
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: a spot on the starting offensive line?
- 1:56:42Speaker 6: Yeah, I think that's been a little bit of a
- 1:56:44Speaker 6: focal point going into this week, going into conference play,
- 1:56:48Speaker 6: going on the road, things like that, as opposed to
- 1:56:54Speaker 6: having a constant rotation, you know, kind of trying to
- 1:56:57Speaker 6: get settled on the first five this week and roll
- 1:57:01Speaker 6: with those guys. But, you know, it does make it
- 1:57:05Speaker 6: trickier when you have a couple guys out that you
- 1:57:08Speaker 6: had planned on early and then, you know, and so...
- 1:57:11Speaker 6: you may have a backup in there, and then you've
- 1:57:13Speaker 6: got a backup playing pretty well, and then all of
- 1:57:15Speaker 6: a sudden you've got a battle on your hands. You
- 1:57:16Speaker 6: have someone getting healthy, and so that's been a little
- 1:57:19Speaker 6: bit tricky in terms of being a little bit of
- 1:57:21Speaker 6: a revolving door, but I think we're working toward getting
- 1:57:25Speaker 6: that stabilized a little bit, and I think as we
- 1:57:29Speaker 6: do that, seeing more chemistry up there with guys that
- 1:57:33Speaker 6: are giving us both physical play, dynamic play, and and
- 1:57:39Speaker 6: being able to communicate in jail and have chemistry.
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: How was Kelvin Obot grading out coach in the, in
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: the first three games, obviously true freshmen it's offensive line
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: is one of the tougher spots to come in and
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: be an immediate contributor for obvious reasons. And we've seen
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: him at guard and also at tackle. So how, how
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: is he adapting to the college game and how's he
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: grading out, especially in those, those reps.
- 1:58:03Speaker 2: With the ones?
- 1:58:04Speaker 6: Yeah, I think, I think Kelvin is on a really
- 1:58:06Speaker 6: good trajectory, you know, and, you on as a true freshman,
- 1:58:11Speaker 6: that can be a little bit tricky. Even playing one
- 1:58:15Speaker 6: spot as a true freshman, getting in there can be difficult.
- 1:58:18Speaker 6: He's got the He's got the strength for it. He's
- 1:58:28Speaker 6: got the skill set for it. He's shown a lot
- 1:58:30Speaker 6: of twitch and very dynamic when he's when he's in
- 1:58:34Speaker 6: there very explosive, you know, when, when you see fronts
- 1:58:38Speaker 6: that are moving a lot. And then I think with
- 1:58:39Speaker 6: our offense where, you know, there's a lot of moving
- 1:58:41Speaker 6: parts to it where the picture can change on you
- 1:58:43Speaker 6: a little bit, you know, it's as, as a young player,
- 1:58:46Speaker 6: it's a little bit tough to, you know, be disciplined
- 1:58:48Speaker 6: with your eyes, just be consistent with your footwork. And,
- 1:58:51Speaker 6: you know, you start chasing ghosts a little bit until
- 1:58:54Speaker 6: you have that game experience. But I think the more
- 1:58:56Speaker 6: and more experience he gets with, with seeing those things,
- 1:58:59Speaker 6: you know, cause it's not any obvious lack of, physical
- 1:59:03Speaker 6: capability but once he gets used to seeing those things
- 1:59:05Speaker 6: more and more then he's just going to continue to
- 1:59:07Speaker 6: get better and better.
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: Kevin mcgibbon is our guest here on the sean o'connell
- 1:59:12Speaker 1: show coordinators corner with the oc this week as they
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: get ready to take on iowa state in the first
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: conference game of the year uh you mentioned it already
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: it's a road game uh that changes you know the
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: crowd dynamic when your offense is on the field instead
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: of a polite silence to facilitate communication, right? There's going
- 1:59:31Speaker 1: to be a bunch of raucous farmers out there trying
- 1:59:34Speaker 1: to make it hard for Devin Dampier to communicate and
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: hard for the offensive line to hear claps and snap
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: counts and everything else.
- 1:59:42Speaker 2: So how do you adjust as an offensive coordinator?
- 1:59:45Speaker 6: You know, I think, um, There's a couple factors going
- 1:59:50Speaker 6: into this game. One of them could be a weather
- 1:59:53Speaker 6: component on Saturday that we're looking at and having to
- 1:59:58Speaker 6: plan for. Once you're not at home and all of
- 2:00:02Speaker 6: a sudden the crowd is against you, I think one
- 2:00:04Speaker 6: thing is, is that our, our culture has to continue
- 2:00:07Speaker 6: to show up, um, going on the road, but then
- 2:00:11Speaker 6: just your, your focus and, and, and your discipline, especially
- 2:00:13Speaker 6: if you get in situations where you may need to
- 2:00:15Speaker 6: be on a, on a silent count and things like that,
- 2:00:18Speaker 6: where you're working on that throughout the week. But again,
- 2:00:22Speaker 6: when there's a lot of pre-snap movement to your offense, um,
- 2:00:26Speaker 6: you know, that, you know, the, the timing elements involved
- 2:00:29Speaker 6: with that take, take a lot of work. And so
- 2:00:31Speaker 6: spending some time on those things, um, this week for,
- 2:00:35Speaker 6: you know, whatever we could be up against in that game.
- 2:00:39Speaker 1: Does the Kevin McGiven playbook change in any meaningful way
- 2:00:43Speaker 1: if it's a wet game?
- 2:00:48Speaker 6: You know, I've always kind of approached those, you know,
- 2:00:52Speaker 6: we're in here and we put a plan together to
- 2:00:56Speaker 6: attack the defense first and foremost and not necessarily um
- 2:01:00Speaker 6: attack or compensate for the weather you have to have
- 2:01:03Speaker 6: that in the back of your mind and as a
- 2:01:05Speaker 6: as a plan but i usually like to go into
- 2:01:06Speaker 6: those things and and try to let the plan unfold
- 2:01:10Speaker 6: until the weather tells you that you can't and and
- 2:01:13Speaker 6: you're having issues with that with those things and then
- 2:01:16Speaker 6: and then start to make the adjustments you know to
- 2:01:18Speaker 6: whatever whatever plan b is at that point but until
- 2:01:22Speaker 6: until Until that becomes a factor, you know, going in
- 2:01:26Speaker 6: with the mentality that we're going to try to let
- 2:01:27Speaker 6: the plan unfold.
- 2:01:30Speaker 1: Before we let you go, just another minute or two
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: here with Kevin McGiven. I want to talk about, you know,
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: when you have this embarrassment of riches and all these
- 2:01:36Speaker 1: potential weapons, I want to talk about what these guys
- 2:01:40Speaker 1: are doing for you or have to do for you
- 2:01:42Speaker 1: without the ball in their hand. Devin Dampier was in
- 2:01:45Speaker 1: here and we talked about how way Sean Parker, this
- 2:01:48Speaker 1: was not a game against Utah state. where he was
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: as productive on the stat sheet as maybe he would
- 2:01:56Speaker 1: like to be, you guys would like him to be.
- 2:01:58Speaker 1: But we got this huge highlight reel block out of
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: him coming back across the formation and just planting a rusher.
- 2:02:05Speaker 2: I mean, it was a great hit.
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: And Devin kept saying, like, man, he does really great
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: things even when he doesn't have the ball in his hands.
- 2:02:14Speaker 1: And I imagine that's important for everyone so that they
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: can get the ball in their hands.
- 2:02:18Speaker 2: They can earn the opportunity. No block, no rock, as
- 2:02:21Speaker 2: you coaches like to say, right?
- 2:02:23Speaker 1: But I just wanted to give you a little space
- 2:02:25Speaker 1: to talk about guys like way, Sean, when they're not
- 2:02:28Speaker 1: getting 30 touches a game, how they're still contributing.
- 2:02:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:02:33Speaker 6: And that can be a, that can be a frustrating,
- 2:02:37Speaker 6: frustrating part of it. And again, something that, that, we
- 2:02:42Speaker 6: have to pay attention to. I have to pay attention
- 2:02:44Speaker 6: to because when you're playing option football, like we've talked
- 2:02:49Speaker 6: about before, the ball can be distributed and then you lose.
- 2:02:52Speaker 6: Sometimes you lose track of those things based on, you know,
- 2:02:56Speaker 6: quarterback decision-making or what the defense is giving you. And so,
- 2:02:59Speaker 6: you know, you can end up taking opportunities out of,
- 2:03:02Speaker 6: out of guys hands where, you know, we weren't able
- 2:03:04Speaker 6: to get him quite as much involved in the past
- 2:03:06Speaker 6: game as, as we had in previous weeks. And then,
- 2:03:10Speaker 6: and then some of the carries, you know, we're, we're
- 2:03:12Speaker 6: a little more sparse, but then he took it upon
- 2:03:15Speaker 6: himself to make an impact. And so, you know, as a,
- 2:03:18Speaker 6: as a captain and a leader of our team, you know,
- 2:03:20Speaker 6: it's not just leading by example, but just the fact
- 2:03:23Speaker 6: that he immediately goes there, how, you know, how, you know,
- 2:03:27Speaker 6: how can I impact this team and, and, you know,
- 2:03:30Speaker 6: whatever my, whatever my role has to be. And then,
- 2:03:33Speaker 6: and so you just see him start doing things that are,
- 2:03:35Speaker 6: you know, quite frankly, not, I wouldn't say they're normal
- 2:03:40Speaker 6: unless you have a really vibrant culture. And if you
- 2:03:43Speaker 6: have a player that takes it upon themselves to be
- 2:03:46Speaker 6: unselfish like that, but, but I think that's something that
- 2:03:48Speaker 6: you're seeing infiltrate the program because you see it with
- 2:03:51Speaker 6: receivers more and more down the field. The one that
- 2:03:54Speaker 6: Daniel Bray broke, we had multiple guys that were sprinting
- 2:03:58Speaker 6: to get out in front of that thing and, and
- 2:03:59Speaker 6: you know, just getting guys away or make, make blocks.
- 2:04:03Speaker 6: You had Ricky Johnson spring him. You had, Braden Payton's
- 2:04:07Speaker 6: friend down the field, he had bird off of a
- 2:04:11Speaker 6: jet action over the top that was sprinting downfield and
- 2:04:14Speaker 6: got to the party. And so that was a really
- 2:04:17Speaker 6: good picture as well. But you're seeing that continually with
- 2:04:19Speaker 6: receivers blocking downfield, with the offensive line breaking the stack
- 2:04:22Speaker 6: to get to the pile. And so that's one of
- 2:04:25Speaker 6: the things I've been really pleased with in the first
- 2:04:28Speaker 6: three games is just seeing that culture show up and
- 2:04:30Speaker 6: guys take it upon themselves to do that and play
- 2:04:32Speaker 6: without the football.
- 2:04:34Speaker 1: The last thing before we let you go, we're trying
- 2:04:35Speaker 1: to come up with a clever name for your two
- 2:04:37Speaker 1: quarterback system. And McDouble was one of the options because
- 2:04:42Speaker 1: it's McGiven's two quarterback system.
- 2:04:45Speaker 2: What do you think of McDouble?
- 2:04:47Speaker 6: Yeah. Take, take, take that and run and run with it. Whatever,
- 2:04:52Speaker 6: whatever you want to do. I mean, when I think
- 2:04:53Speaker 6: of McDouble, I think of.
- 2:04:55Speaker 9: Going and getting a double cheeseburger or something, but I
- 2:04:58Speaker 9: think it evokes that for all of us.
- 2:05:00Speaker 1: So it's like, maybe not appropriate for two pre like
- 2:05:03Speaker 1: premium athletes, but you know, they don't have to sign.
- 2:05:06Speaker 2: Off on it. You do.
- 2:05:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:05:09Speaker 6: We haven't, haven't quite named it yet. You know, we
- 2:05:12Speaker 6: have our different personnel package names and stuff like that,
- 2:05:14Speaker 6: but they haven't really quite named that yet, but it's
- 2:05:18Speaker 6: been fun to try to come up with stuff.
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: So there's not, there's not one name for it in
- 2:05:22Speaker 1: the playbook. Like, Hey, bird and Devin are both on
- 2:05:24Speaker 1: the field. There's not, you know, it's not like jumbo
- 2:05:27Speaker 1: or the equivalent thereof.
- 2:05:29Speaker 6: You know, so, so, um, I, so I will give
- 2:05:32Speaker 6: you the, I mean, just because of bird, you know,
- 2:05:34Speaker 6: and then there's those, there's a hawk group and there's
- 2:05:36Speaker 6: a talent group and, and, you know, so it's based
- 2:05:38Speaker 6: on the other people that are on the field with them. Um,
- 2:05:41Speaker 6: you know, but kind of those bird terms when he's
- 2:05:43Speaker 6: out there on the field that, um, that we've adopted
- 2:05:46Speaker 6: a little bit.
- 2:05:47Speaker 12: All right.
- 2:05:47Speaker 2: I like it.
- 2:05:48Speaker 1: We were brainstorming last week and there was a lot of,
- 2:05:51Speaker 1: what do we call this thing? There was a lot of, Hey,
- 2:05:52Speaker 1: we'll call it, let's call it the spider Hawk because
- 2:05:55Speaker 1: of Let's call it, you know, we can't, someone came on.
- 2:05:58Speaker 1: This one was, I think my favorite, someone came in
- 2:06:00Speaker 1: and they said, well, call it the 50 cent or
- 2:06:02Speaker 1: the half dollar offense.
- 2:06:03Speaker 2: Cause it's two quarters. It's two quarterbacks, you know?
- 2:06:06Speaker 6: Oh yeah.
- 2:06:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:06:07Speaker 6: People are getting creative with that. But yeah, it's, but,
- 2:06:13Speaker 6: but it is interesting. Cause I think a lot of times,
- 2:06:15Speaker 6: even when we go into a game plan, we don't
- 2:06:17Speaker 6: even have a name for something. And so it's just
- 2:06:19Speaker 6: like created. And so all of a sudden we have
- 2:06:20Speaker 6: to just come up with a name. Yeah.
- 2:06:23Speaker 1: Well, we're not good at calling the plays, but we're
- 2:06:26Speaker 1: going to help you brainstorm with what to call stuff.
- 2:06:28Speaker 2: If you need any help on that, all right?
- 2:06:30Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. I'll call in next time I'm searching
- 2:06:33Speaker 6: for sure.
- 2:06:34Speaker 2: Coach, appreciate your time. Good luck on the road. We'll
- 2:06:37Speaker 2: chat again soon.
- 2:06:37Speaker 6: Okay, sounds good. I appreciate it.
- 2:06:41Speaker 2: Kevin McGiven. Mack G. In a little coordinator's corner.
- 2:06:46Speaker 1: The airing of grievances is next on a Friday edition
- 2:06:49Speaker 1: of the Sean O'Connell Show.

- 2:07:48Speaker 1: text line. PGA Tour leaderboard updates are brought to you
- 2:07:51Speaker 1: by You Went to Golf by Worldwide Golf. Visit in
- 2:07:55Speaker 1: store for free custom fitting at you went to golf
- 2:07:57Speaker 1: shop online at worldwide golf.com.
- 2:08:00Speaker 2: Get there.
- 2:08:01Speaker 1: Multiple locations all up and down the Wasatch front. And
- 2:08:05Speaker 1: right now, 25% off on all the golf apparel, some
- 2:08:09Speaker 1: closeouts as the season kind of winds down a little bit.
- 2:08:15Speaker 2: What's going on at the president's cup, James? All right.
- 2:08:17Speaker 4: President's cup. We got four sums. Today, it's U.S. versus international.
- 2:08:23Speaker 4: Think Ryder Cup, but not just Europe. Scotty Scheffler, Sam Burns,
- 2:08:29Speaker 4: they are down one right now through six holes to
- 2:08:32Speaker 4: Corey Connors and Nick Taylor. Russell Henley and Jacob Bridgman
- 2:08:37Speaker 4: are down two through five to Sung Jae Im and
- 2:08:41Speaker 4: Hideki Matsuyama. Colin Morikawa and Wyndham Clark are tied with
- 2:08:47Speaker 4: Ryan Fox and Minwoo Lee. And let's see, Justin Thomas,
- 2:08:51Speaker 4: Cam Young, they are down one through three holes to
- 2:08:54Speaker 4: Adam Scott and Christian Batuntite. And Patrick Cantlay, Xander Shoffley
- 2:09:01Speaker 4: tied with Tom Kim and Siwoo.
- 2:09:03Speaker 2: Kim through two holes.
- 2:09:04Speaker 4: So it seems like internationals got the advantage so far,
- 2:09:08Speaker 4: but it's still early. Per yesterday's results, U.S. has the
- 2:09:14Speaker 4: overall lead three matches to two. with there's still Saturday
- 2:09:19Speaker 4: and Sunday to play in the President's Cup. That's your
- 2:09:22Speaker 4: leaderboard update brought to you by Uintah Golf.
- 2:09:24Speaker 2: Love it. All right.
- 2:09:25Speaker 1: 877-353-0700 to send your grievances in. Matt Rigby sends this
- 2:09:33Speaker 1: one in. My grievance, I do not need to take
- 2:09:35Speaker 1: a survey about everything I do. If your organization needs
- 2:09:39Speaker 1: to constantly run surveys, then the customer service.
- 2:09:42Speaker 2: Is probably not good.
- 2:09:47Speaker 1: The ubiquity now, the constant, Hey, will you answer these
- 2:09:52Speaker 1: questions about your experience? Every time you make a purchase
- 2:09:55Speaker 1: is a little off putting. It's weird because they're, it's like,
- 2:09:58Speaker 1: I just wanted to buy a pair of shoes. I
- 2:10:00Speaker 1: don't need to tell you my deep thoughts about politics
- 2:10:04Speaker 1: and religion, but, uh, that's look, it's been a very
- 2:10:08Speaker 1: lucrative business for certain people to start these companies. And, uh,
- 2:10:13Speaker 1: an indirect or actually pretty direct way it's at least
- 2:10:16Speaker 1: given us an nhl hockey team here so i i
- 2:10:19Speaker 1: understand your grievance but there's a silver lining.
- 2:10:22Speaker 2: Also yeah there's a significant figure in utah that is
- 2:10:28Speaker 2: benefiting from all these companies wanting to have surveys i'm
- 2:10:31Speaker 2: sure shout out to ryan smith and qualtrics.
- 2:10:33Speaker 1: Okay this is a fantastic i'm so happy tyson sent
- 2:10:37Speaker 1: this grievance in okay because this is what the grievances
- 2:10:39Speaker 1: are it's the thing that's just been stuck in your
- 2:10:41Speaker 1: craw for so long And you have to get it out.
- 2:10:44Speaker 1: You have to get it off your chest. That's what
- 2:10:46Speaker 1: the airing of grievances was designed for every Friday here
- 2:10:49Speaker 1: on the Sean O'Connell show.
- 2:10:51Speaker 2: This from Tyson.
- 2:10:53Speaker 1: Grievance with the scoreboard operator or operate towards. I've been
- 2:10:56Speaker 1: going up to the Utes games for a lot of
- 2:10:58Speaker 1: years and the replay guy has always irritated me. If
- 2:11:02Speaker 1: you've been going up to the games for as long
- 2:11:04Speaker 1: as I have, you know what I'm talking about. Also,
- 2:11:07Speaker 1: when a play is under review, I don't need to
- 2:11:09Speaker 1: see a split screen of the officials and the play
- 2:11:12Speaker 1: being reviewed. It's bad when our jumbo screen is so big,
- 2:11:15Speaker 1: yet I can't make a good educated guess on the
- 2:11:17Speaker 1: play being reviewed because I'm too, because I'm forced to
- 2:11:20Speaker 1: look at the refs too. Makes it too small. Sorry
- 2:11:24Speaker 1: for the long-winded grievance. Years of built-up annoyance. Okay, yes,
- 2:11:29Speaker 1: that's what it's for.
- 2:11:31Speaker 2: Get it out. And I will say this. If the
- 2:11:35Speaker 2: official is not speaking, right?
- 2:11:38Speaker 1: Like when there's, when there's like a conference who's adopted
- 2:11:43Speaker 1: as the big 10 is going to, as the ACC,
- 2:11:45Speaker 1: everyone's going to be doing this before long when the
- 2:11:47Speaker 1: review is happening and we get to have the communication,
- 2:11:51Speaker 1: we get to hear the communication between the replay center
- 2:11:53Speaker 1: and the referee.
- 2:11:55Speaker 2: Fine.
- 2:11:55Speaker 1: Then put the referee on the camera. Otherwise, you're right.
- 2:11:59Speaker 1: We only need to see the play. We only need
- 2:12:01Speaker 1: to get an up-close view of the play itself.
- 2:12:06Speaker 2: I hate this even watching it on TV, Tyson.
- 2:12:09Speaker 4: I can understand even more so why it's even more
- 2:12:12Speaker 4: annoying in the stadium because unless you're watching the game
- 2:12:16Speaker 4: on your phone too, all you got is the video
- 2:12:19Speaker 4: board in the stadium, and they make it smaller.
- 2:12:21Speaker 2: That's awful, like you're saying. But it's even... it's bad.
- 2:12:25Speaker 2: Even on TV.
- 2:12:26Speaker 4: I'm like, I don't need to see the ref looking
- 2:12:28Speaker 4: at a screen, by the way, I can't see the
- 2:12:31Speaker 4: screen he's looking at. I like, why do we need
- 2:12:33Speaker 4: to see that the ref is looking.
- 2:12:35Speaker 2: At a screen?
- 2:12:35Speaker 1: If you want to put like a tiny, I mean,
- 2:12:38Speaker 1: tiny picture and picture of the referees staring into that little,
- 2:12:43Speaker 1: that little picture box from like the world's fair in 1912,
- 2:12:46Speaker 1: the last time Iowa state won a conference championship, then.
- 2:12:50Speaker 2: You can do that. Otherwise just show us the play.
- 2:12:58Speaker 2: Maybe, you know,
- 2:13:01Speaker 2: I just thought of this.
- 2:13:02Speaker 4: They have the whatever provider of the screens and they
- 2:13:08Speaker 4: have the brand name on the side. That's probably just
- 2:13:11Speaker 4: to satisfy, hey, we got to give, what is it,
- 2:13:14Speaker 4: DV Sport? We got to give DV Sport their camera time.
- 2:13:17Speaker 4: Maybe that's the only reason they do it so that
- 2:13:19Speaker 4: the logo is shown. But it's really, like you said,
- 2:13:22Speaker 4: if that's the reason. satisfy a sponsorship or whatever, just
- 2:13:26Speaker 4: put it in the corner and picture in picture.
- 2:13:28Speaker 2: Like you said that then, then we're okay.
- 2:13:31Speaker 4: Most of the screen TV and on the video board
- 2:13:33Speaker 4: is the play.
- 2:13:34Speaker 2: You can make an educated guess. All right.
- 2:13:36Speaker 1: This is another great one from 1466. I love what
- 2:13:39Speaker 1: people get really specific. One of my biggest grievances is
- 2:13:43Speaker 1: with cop shows. And I'm not even kidding. I literally
- 2:13:45Speaker 1: scream at the TV about this. We're off to a
- 2:13:48Speaker 1: great start here. cops show grievance. If you haven't watched
- 2:13:51Speaker 1: on patrol live, it's on Friday and Saturday nights, and
- 2:13:54Speaker 1: it's absolutely worth checking out.
- 2:13:56Speaker 2: But here's what drives me insane.
- 2:13:58Speaker 1: The cops are constantly threatening people with the taser, sir,
- 2:14:01Speaker 1: put your hands behind your back.
- 2:14:02Speaker 2: You're going to get tased, sir. Stop resisting.
- 2:14:05Speaker 1: You're going to get taste, sir. This is your last warning. No,
- 2:14:08Speaker 1: stop negotiating. Give them one warning. You're going to be tased.
- 2:14:12Speaker 1: And if they respond with what.
- 2:14:13Speaker 2: 14 66.
- 2:14:19Speaker 1: Just wants to see people getting tased. Don't threaten them.
- 2:14:23Speaker 1: Just do it.
- 2:14:24Speaker 7: Okay.
- 2:14:25Speaker 1: Or one threat. He says one threat should be enough. No,
- 2:14:28Speaker 1: no last warning. Hey, look, this is, this is what,
- 2:14:32Speaker 1: this is how we should do everything right.
- 2:14:34Speaker 2: Follow through.
- 2:14:35Speaker 1: This is how James, you're going to learn this as
- 2:14:37Speaker 1: your kid gets a little bit older. Follow through is really,
- 2:14:40Speaker 1: really difficult with parenting, right? Like when your kids are
- 2:14:43Speaker 1: acting up, stop that. And then they don't stop it.
- 2:14:46Speaker 2: Stop it. Stop it.
- 2:14:48Speaker 1: Or I'm gonna, I told you I was gonna, Hey,
- 2:14:52Speaker 1: if you don't stop that, I really am going to
- 2:14:54Speaker 1: know you say, stop it.
- 2:14:56Speaker 2: And if they don't stop it, you say, all right, bang.
- 2:14:59Speaker 2: We hit him with the flick. Oh yeah.
- 2:15:01Speaker 1: The flick bang. Take away the toy. Don't threaten to
- 2:15:05Speaker 1: take away the toy. Actually take away the toy. I
- 2:15:08Speaker 1: keep acting like that. I'm actually going to make you
- 2:15:11Speaker 1: feel bad for five seconds.
- 2:15:13Speaker 4: The multiple three, two, one countdowns or one, two, three. One, two, three.
- 2:15:19Speaker 4: Still freaking out.
- 2:15:20Speaker 2: Okay, one, two. No, you don't need more than that.
- 2:15:23Speaker 1: I had a terrible, terrible thing last week where the
- 2:15:26Speaker 1: counting has worked.
- 2:15:28Speaker 2: It's worked so well. Yeah, it's amazing how something that
- 2:15:32Speaker 2: simple works.
- 2:15:33Speaker 1: You just say one, and they're like, okay, okay. Even
- 2:15:35Speaker 1: though they've never let me get to three, right? My
- 2:15:38Speaker 1: older two had never let me get to three. Now
- 2:15:41Speaker 1: my youngest is almost three, and she.
- 2:15:44Speaker 2: Let me get to three. I was like, one?
- 2:15:47Speaker 1: Speaker 2 and a half. Cause then you got to
- 2:15:52Speaker 1: make a decision. What am I actually going to do?
- 2:15:54Speaker 2: Yeah, you did. You weren't ready to actually, she made
- 2:15:57Speaker 2: me do it.
- 2:15:58Speaker 1: She made me three and I had to take the
- 2:15:59Speaker 1: thing away and she's freaking out, but you know what?
- 2:16:02Speaker 2: It's fine.
- 2:16:02Speaker 6: It's good.
- 2:16:03Speaker 2: All through.
- 2:16:04Speaker 4: It hurts your heart a lot. I wasn't going to
- 2:16:06Speaker 4: say a little bit. It hurts your heart a lot.
- 2:16:08Speaker 2: I'm sure. But you followed through. Good for you.
- 2:16:10Speaker 1: The world is so crazy right now. It feels like
- 2:16:13Speaker 1: everything is a grievance. Maybe you should change it to
- 2:16:15Speaker 1: airing your wins. If you want to air your wins,
- 2:16:17Speaker 1: that's fine. This is meant to be like silly.
- 2:16:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:16:20Speaker 1: I mean, it's meant to be funny, like yelling at
- 2:16:23Speaker 1: a cop show on TV.
- 2:16:25Speaker 2: Or the scoreboard thing.
- 2:16:26Speaker 1: Those are two great grievances, by the way, 49, 22 airs,
- 2:16:30Speaker 1: the grievance, just two, two words, BYU fans.
- 2:16:34Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:16:34Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:16:38Speaker 1: My grievances with a particular university that may or may.
- 2:16:40Speaker 2: Not be affiliated with your show. Oh, Oh, I need
- 2:16:44Speaker 2: to read through this.
- 2:16:45Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 2:16:45Speaker 4: Maybe, maybe I'll read another one while you're reading through
- 2:16:49Speaker 4: that one. Along the same lines, high school scoreboard operators
- 2:16:53Speaker 4: is from Phil need to stay on top of the game.
- 2:16:56Speaker 2: Oh, this, okay.
- 2:16:57Speaker 1: This is a, this is a grievance against parking ticket enforcement.
- 2:17:02Speaker 1: So we are safe to pay for parking. You either
- 2:17:06Speaker 1: pay on an app or at the meter. I've always
- 2:17:07Speaker 1: paid on the app. However, the other day I parked
- 2:17:09Speaker 1: in a different spot on campus and paid on the app.
- 2:17:11Speaker 2: I was ticketed.
- 2:17:13Speaker 1: When I showed them my receipt and asked for an explanation,
- 2:17:14Speaker 1: they said I was ticketed because I didn't pay at
- 2:17:16Speaker 1: the meter and refused to waive the ticket. In my defense,
- 2:17:18Speaker 1: being either way is the same amount of money and
- 2:17:21Speaker 1: goes to the same place. Predatory parking enforcement is out
- 2:17:24Speaker 1: of control, especially when it involves a grad student that's
- 2:17:27Speaker 1: already paying a healthy sum to be there. Don't expect
- 2:17:30Speaker 1: any alumni contributions from me anytime soon.
- 2:17:33Speaker 2: Look, all right, Jordan, you don't fall through on that.
- 2:17:35Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:17:35Speaker 1: Do not step over dollars to pick up dimes. This
- 2:17:39Speaker 1: is something that every big entity, every, if it's a
- 2:17:43Speaker 1: student thing, right? If you're a grad student paying thousands
- 2:17:46Speaker 1: and thousands and thousands of dollars, how about free parking?
- 2:17:50Speaker 1: I'm not afraid to say that. I'm not afraid. Like
- 2:17:54Speaker 1: we love the university of Utah parking enforcement and the
- 2:17:58Speaker 1: meter maids and the people that get involved.
- 2:18:00Speaker 2: Like the it's, it's the, it's the.
- 2:18:02Speaker 1: Job that the hall monitor from elementary school grows up
- 2:18:05Speaker 1: and takes drives me crazy.
- 2:18:08Speaker 2: You were never a hall monitor, were you? I was
- 2:18:11Speaker 2: more of the crossing guard type. Okay. I was hall
- 2:18:14Speaker 2: monitor a couple times.
- 2:18:16Speaker 1: That's not good, James. You trying to do parking enforcement, too?
- 2:18:20Speaker 2: You know, I was thinking about a career change, actually. No,
- 2:18:25Speaker 2: I don't think I was that kind of a hall monitor. Grievance.
- 2:18:29Speaker 1: Needing an app to do anything or everything. Can my
- 2:18:32Speaker 1: fridge just keep the food cold? I don't need an app.
- 2:18:34Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 2:18:35Speaker 1: I don't make one degree temperature adjustments to it on
- 2:18:37Speaker 1: the go. Plug it in and forget. Pretty soon the
- 2:18:39Speaker 1: fridge is going to want me on a subscription model
- 2:18:41Speaker 1: to keep my food fresh.
- 2:18:43Speaker 3: Look.
- 2:18:44Speaker 2: Smart fridges. Yeah. 100% agree.
- 2:18:47Speaker 1: There are certain things like now the smart home stuff
- 2:18:51Speaker 1: has gone completely insane. I don't want my oven and
- 2:18:56Speaker 1: stove to to be wifi connected. I don't, I don't
- 2:19:00Speaker 1: even want my smoker to be like, I love my Traeger.
- 2:19:04Speaker 1: We don't advertise on the show. I love smoking stuff.
- 2:19:07Speaker 1: I don't have like the super fancy new ones where
- 2:19:09Speaker 1: you can adjust them from your phone.
- 2:19:11Speaker 2: Like, don't you want wifi or technology? No, I don't.
- 2:19:15Speaker 1: I want to, I want to enjoy being outside and
- 2:19:17Speaker 1: experience and going down and checking on things.
- 2:19:20Speaker 2: I don't want to like, just be, it drives me crazy.
- 2:19:23Speaker 1: These smart fridges, it, When you pull up the Wi-Fi
- 2:19:29Speaker 1: usage from your router, like, wherever you get your thing from,
- 2:19:33Speaker 1: it is appalling how many devices are trying to connect
- 2:19:37Speaker 1: all the time.
- 2:19:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:19:39Speaker 2: It's like, what?
- 2:19:40Speaker 1: Hey, you remember that clock we bought for the girls'
- 2:19:43Speaker 1: room so they could learn how to tell time?
- 2:19:45Speaker 2: You know that thing is connecting to our Wi-Fi? Stop it.
- 2:19:48Speaker 2: I don't want you listening to me. I don't want
- 2:19:50Speaker 2: you sucking information out of me on accident for the algorithm.
- 2:19:54Speaker 4: Taking away bandwidth. So when I'm trying to watch a game,
- 2:19:58Speaker 4: it's buffering a little too much because I already got
- 2:20:00Speaker 4: 15 devices on it.
- 2:20:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:20:02Speaker 2: Sam, that is a great grievance that you just heard.
- 2:20:04Speaker 2: Great grievance. I'll say this.
- 2:20:06Speaker 4: I don't know if they have an app for these things,
- 2:20:08Speaker 4: but we're seeing more of those commercials for smart toilets.
- 2:20:12Speaker 2: Like, we're getting way out of control. All right, why
- 2:20:14Speaker 2: does my toilet need to be smart?
- 2:20:16Speaker 1: I want my toilet to be as dumb as possible
- 2:20:18Speaker 1: so it doesn't have to suffer through being my toilet.
- 2:20:20Speaker 1: I don't want there to be any intelligence at all
- 2:20:23Speaker 1: in the toilet. The toilet should be an inanimate object.
- 2:20:26Speaker 4: And they're like these very high production value commercials, too,
- 2:20:30Speaker 4: with a very attractive woman. And you're like, wait, this
- 2:20:35Speaker 4: is for a toilet?
- 2:20:36Speaker 2: Are you kidding me? All right.
- 2:20:41Speaker 1: From Derek Grievance, construction has always been a problem in
- 2:20:43Speaker 1: this state. However, if the construction is complete to a
- 2:20:46Speaker 1: certain point, you do not need to extend the cones
- 2:20:48Speaker 1: out an extra quarter mile.
- 2:20:49Speaker 2: Please remove them.
- 2:20:51Speaker 9: Agreed.
- 2:20:51Speaker 1: The wildest thing, and this happens for maybe someone from
- 2:20:58Speaker 1: traffic from UDOT. Maybe someone can explain to me why
- 2:21:02Speaker 1: this happens. Yeah, if you work at UDOT, 877-353-0700. The
- 2:21:06Speaker 1: weirdest thing that happens is when there's cones and there's
- 2:21:11Speaker 1: like a lane that is being closed off for whatever reason.
- 2:21:14Speaker 1: And then you drive past it and there's no visible construction.
- 2:21:19Speaker 1: It's like, they're just coordinating off the lane to see
- 2:21:22Speaker 1: if we'll comply.
- 2:21:23Speaker 5: Okay.
- 2:21:24Speaker 2: They didn't drive on the lane. So now we can
- 2:21:26Speaker 2: do some work there.
- 2:21:27Speaker 1: It drives me absolutely in the avenues right now, there's
- 2:21:30Speaker 1: a bunch of road closed signs all over the place.
- 2:21:33Speaker 1: And you're like, road closed. Okay, why is the road closed?
- 2:21:36Speaker 1: Because you can see, right? You can see up to
- 2:21:39Speaker 1: the next block. There's nothing there. Why is the road closed?
- 2:21:42Speaker 1: There's no equipment there. There's no holes being dug. There's
- 2:21:46Speaker 1: no fresh pavement. There's no fresh asphalt.
- 2:21:48Speaker 2: Then you just close the road. Knock it off. All right?
- 2:21:52Speaker 1: Keep them open until someone is actually standing there with
- 2:21:56Speaker 1: a shovel or driving a tractor or whatever it is.
- 2:21:59Speaker 2: Do we need to have Derek.
- 2:22:02Speaker 4: lead a rebellion where we just deliberately knock over cones
- 2:22:07Speaker 4: as we're driving when they don't need to be there.
- 2:22:09Speaker 4: I might be taking a little too far.
- 2:22:12Speaker 2: Okay, this is very funny from 0175.
- 2:22:15Speaker 1: I went to grill something the other day and I
- 2:22:16Speaker 1: had to wait for my smoker to update.
- 2:22:19Speaker 2: Absolutely not! No!
- 2:22:22Speaker 1: No, I want to be able to light something on
- 2:22:24Speaker 1: fire and cook a piece of meat over it.
- 2:22:26Speaker 2: Do not wait for me to update my app. Absolutely not. Terrible. Oh, terrible.
- 2:22:36Speaker 1: What a vibe killer that is. 7605, grievance from Alex.
- 2:22:40Speaker 2: I'm a pilot.
- 2:22:41Speaker 1: I can't stand when people show up to airports and
- 2:22:43Speaker 1: act like they haven't lived in a society before. Stopping
- 2:22:46Speaker 1: in the middle of the walkway, screaming at gate agents
- 2:22:48Speaker 1: and acting like the airplane is yours.
- 2:22:50Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 2:22:51Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:22:52Speaker 1: I know that travel is expensive. I know that attending
- 2:22:55Speaker 1: sporting events is expensive. I know going to Disneyland is expensive.
- 2:23:00Speaker 1: Just because you bought an expensive ticket does not mean
- 2:23:03Speaker 1: it gives you license to act like a complete and
- 2:23:05Speaker 1: utter moron.
- 2:23:09Speaker 2: We get it.
- 2:23:10Speaker 1: We're all being inconvenienced sometimes. Yes, it's unfortunate that the
- 2:23:13Speaker 1: flight was delayed, that things were crazy. I was on
- 2:23:17Speaker 1: a plane not too long ago, and we had this... Like,
- 2:23:19Speaker 1: the plane that we were sitting on, there was a
- 2:23:22Speaker 1: maintenance issue. And they did a really great job of
- 2:23:25Speaker 1: finding us a new plane and putting us on another plane.
- 2:23:28Speaker 1: And it took like an hour and a half for
- 2:23:29Speaker 1: them to figure that out. And there was one guy
- 2:23:33Speaker 1: in particular, who was probably about my dad's age.
- 2:23:37Speaker 2: Who was just berating... every airline employee available to him.
- 2:23:41Speaker 1: He was just like talking about how he's never flying
- 2:23:44Speaker 1: on this airline again and talking about how unforgivable this
- 2:23:47Speaker 1: was and how unacceptable this was. And for whatever reason,
- 2:23:51Speaker 1: he kept looking to me after he would make one
- 2:23:54Speaker 1: of these complaints. I was like the nearest adult and
- 2:24:00Speaker 1: he would be like, yeah, well you, you you're losing
- 2:24:03Speaker 1: my business. Then he'd look to me like, right. And
- 2:24:06Speaker 1: every single time I was like, no dude, not on
- 2:24:08Speaker 1: your team. I'm not on your team. You are not
- 2:24:10Speaker 1: on anyone's team right now. These people are trying to
- 2:24:12Speaker 1: help us. And like, then they got us off the
- 2:24:16Speaker 1: plane and they're like, go to this other gate. We
- 2:24:18Speaker 1: have a different plane for you. He comes out and
- 2:24:20Speaker 1: he's yells at the gate agent. And he looks to me,
- 2:24:23Speaker 1: he's like, right. And I'm like, no, absolutely not. My
- 2:24:30Speaker 1: grievance is when your boss slash general manager has been
- 2:24:32Speaker 1: away from doing the actual job has no concept of
- 2:24:35Speaker 1: how long the job takes to Everything is a few minutes,
- 2:24:39Speaker 1: a half hour or not too long when actuality it's
- 2:24:41Speaker 1: a half day or a whole day. And he doesn't
- 2:24:43Speaker 1: understand why this is a big problem where management forgets
- 2:24:48Speaker 1: where they came from or worse. They're hired just to
- 2:24:51Speaker 1: be management and they don't know what it actually looks
- 2:24:53Speaker 1: like to do like the blue collar jobs or the
- 2:24:57Speaker 1: installations or the constructions or whatever.
- 2:25:00Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good grievance. Okay, this is interesting from Tom.
- 2:25:08Speaker 1: Zoe Saldana, the actress that plays Gamora in Marvel, threatens
- 2:25:11Speaker 1: her kids with bringing in the Hulk. Says that they
- 2:25:15Speaker 1: comply instantly. No, mommy, not the Hulk. That's amazing. If
- 2:25:22Speaker 1: you don't stop that, I'm going to bring in the Hulk.
- 2:25:25Speaker 1: And the kids actually believe it. At some point, okay,
- 2:25:28Speaker 1: Zoe's going to have this problem. Like my three-year-old, almost three-year-old,
- 2:25:32Speaker 1: allowed me to get to number three. One of those
- 2:25:35Speaker 1: kids is eventually going to be like, okay, bring the
- 2:25:37Speaker 1: Hulk in.
- 2:25:37Speaker 2: I want to see.
- 2:25:39Speaker 1: And then you're lost. Jordan says the smoker having to
- 2:25:47Speaker 1: update is a legendary grievance. It absolutely is. It's, it's
- 2:25:51Speaker 1: totally ridiculous. Okay, this is, I didn't, we got a,
- 2:26:15Speaker 1: Darren texted in about Toby Keith. Kind of follow up
- 2:26:19Speaker 1: on the Toby Keith comment. When your kids were young
- 2:26:21Speaker 1: and misbehaving, we would always tell them, Toby Keith is coming.
- 2:26:25Speaker 2: Toby Keith is coming.
- 2:26:27Speaker 1: I assume that's a reference to put a boot in
- 2:26:28Speaker 1: your American way. All right, that's funny. Okay, here's a
- 2:26:36Speaker 1: grievance from me. Based on a video I just retweeted
- 2:26:41Speaker 1: and something that we saw in a game night live
- 2:26:44Speaker 1: last night, lone peak American fork touchdown pass caught at
- 2:26:52Speaker 1: the goal line, like final seconds game deciding play huge
- 2:26:57Speaker 1: reception right in the corner of the end zone. Lone
- 2:27:01Speaker 1: peak kid goes up, catches the ball, comes down arm
- 2:27:05Speaker 1: with the ball and it hits the pile on his
- 2:27:08Speaker 1: knee kind of drags along the turf out of bounds.
- 2:27:12Speaker 1: And we get to watch this replay over and over
- 2:27:16Speaker 1: and over again, right? To the end of time, we
- 2:27:20Speaker 1: get to see it. You can go to at real
- 2:27:21Speaker 1: OC sports right now. You can see the video. My
- 2:27:25Speaker 1: grievance is if we're going to have replay for the
- 2:27:29Speaker 1: audience of the game, you have to have replay for
- 2:27:33Speaker 1: the officials as well. Because if, if you tried to
- 2:27:38Speaker 1: judge this thing in real time, I could see why
- 2:27:41Speaker 1: the referee right you can't look at you can't hyper
- 2:27:44Speaker 1: focus on two things at once so he's looking at
- 2:27:46Speaker 1: this picture he's eyes on he's right where he's supposed
- 2:27:47Speaker 1: to be and he sees the knee and the knee
- 2:27:50Speaker 1: does go out of bounds right and when you slow
- 2:27:54Speaker 1: it down and you freeze frame and you go you
- 2:27:56Speaker 1: know and It looks like maybe the ball goes over
- 2:28:01Speaker 1: the plane of the end zone inside the pylon, perhaps
- 2:28:05Speaker 1: just the quickest fraction of a second before the.
- 2:28:08Speaker 2: Knee hits out of bounds or hits the ground and
- 2:28:11Speaker 2: makes the kid down, right?
- 2:28:14Speaker 1: The problem is the referee has to make that call
- 2:28:17Speaker 1: in real time in a high school football game. And
- 2:28:21Speaker 1: this one is a total 50-50. It's a total coin flip.
- 2:28:24Speaker 1: And so he says no, no touchdowns. Short of the
- 2:28:28Speaker 1: goal line, game is over.
- 2:28:31Speaker 2: It's done. American Fork wins, right?
- 2:28:34Speaker 1: Well, unfortunately, everyone watching on the broadcast and everyone that
- 2:28:38Speaker 1: can go to social media, even during the game and
- 2:28:40Speaker 1: especially after the game, then looks at it and.
- 2:28:43Speaker 2: Is just like, no, that was in. That was in.
- 2:28:47Speaker 1: Look, ball crosses the plane and 1-8, 1-100th of a
- 2:28:52Speaker 1: second later, that's when the knee goes down. I love
- 2:28:55Speaker 1: that we have replay to watch this and make it
- 2:28:57Speaker 1: better on television, but you can't, you can't microanalyze a
- 2:29:02Speaker 1: replay and be like that referee didn't do his job
- 2:29:05Speaker 1: when the referee doesn't get to use the replay high.
- 2:29:08Speaker 2: School football in the state of Utah doesn't have replay.
- 2:29:10Speaker 1: So my grievance is if you're whoever, if you're KSL,
- 2:29:14Speaker 1: if you're whoever's doing these high school football games and
- 2:29:17Speaker 1: you have like two cameras, three cameras.
- 2:29:19Speaker 2: To KU TV, they do their own thing. Channel two.
- 2:29:23Speaker 1: It, The referees have to have replay if you're going
- 2:29:27Speaker 1: to use replay.
- 2:29:28Speaker 2: I totally agree with this.
- 2:29:29Speaker 4: This sounds like something that our guy Todd Newcomb would
- 2:29:32Speaker 4: air as well. I'm thinking of Todd when you're saying this.
- 2:29:35Speaker 2: High school referee, X96, of course, as well.
- 2:29:39Speaker 4: He was telling me a couple weeks ago that he
- 2:29:44Speaker 4: had a coach yelling at him about rules that are
- 2:29:48Speaker 4: rules on the books for the NFL and maybe college football, too.
- 2:29:51Speaker 4: but are not on the UHSAA rule book. So illegal
- 2:29:55Speaker 4: in those, in those higher levels, perfectly legal in, in
- 2:29:58Speaker 4: Utah high school, but he's yelling at him all game about, Hey,
- 2:30:02Speaker 4: why didn't you call that? And he's having to tell
- 2:30:03Speaker 4: him over and over again, because it's not a rule
- 2:30:06Speaker 4: in high school.
- 2:30:07Speaker 2: Like, so that kind of stuff has got to bother
- 2:30:10Speaker 2: refs like big time.
- 2:30:13Speaker 1: Zero one seven five. Here's my grievance. Half clean laundry.
- 2:30:17Speaker 1: What do you do with it? Too dirty to put
- 2:30:19Speaker 1: back in the drawer, too clean to put it in
- 2:30:20Speaker 1: the hamper. just collects in a pile until I wear it.
- 2:30:24Speaker 1: Can I tell you something? 0 1 7 5.
- 2:30:27Speaker 2: If it's too dirty to put back in your drawer,
- 2:30:29Speaker 2: it's time to wash.
- 2:30:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:30:31Speaker 1: Just do washing it again is not going to hurt it.
- 2:30:36Speaker 1: I'm a multiple wear guy on like shorts, jeans, things
- 2:30:39Speaker 1: like that.
- 2:30:40Speaker 2: That's it.
- 2:30:41Speaker 1: There's no other piece of clothing that I'm a multiple
- 2:30:44Speaker 1: wear guy. So In that case, like I'm wearing shorts
- 2:30:48Speaker 1: right now. I could take these off. I could put
- 2:30:50Speaker 1: them back in the drawer. They're not too dirty. And
- 2:30:52Speaker 1: if they are too dirty to put back in the
- 2:30:54Speaker 1: drawer where you don't want them touching your other clean clothes,
- 2:30:56Speaker 1: it means it's time to wash them.
- 2:30:58Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:30:58Speaker 4: I mean, however often you want to wear the same
- 2:31:02Speaker 4: thing is like you use your best judgment on that.
- 2:31:06Speaker 2: But like if you think that it's not clean enough.
- 2:31:12Speaker 2: to be with your clean clothes, it will not hurt
- 2:31:14Speaker 2: it to wash it again. Even if you think it
- 2:31:17Speaker 2: might be just a little bit too early to wash it,
- 2:31:18Speaker 2: just go ahead and wash it. It's fine. All right.
- 2:31:23Speaker 1: Should we just make this the end of the show
- 2:31:24Speaker 1: and then double up at the end, James? Since Spence
- 2:31:27Speaker 1: is here? Yeah, let's do it.
- 2:31:28Speaker 5: Okay.
- 2:31:29Speaker 1: Advanced window products, 801-850-9100 for $ 2, 500 off 10 windows or more.
- 2:31:34Speaker 1: A reminder also that Metallica is coming to Rice Eccles
- 2:31:37Speaker 1: Stadium next June. Tickets are on sale right now at Ticketmaster.com,
- 2:31:41Speaker 1: and this thing will sell out, so go to Ticketmaster.com
- 2:31:45Speaker 1: and find your Metallica tickets for Rice Eccles Stadium. Spence
- 2:31:49Speaker 1: Checketts is here. The drive is next, and we're doing
- 2:31:51Speaker 1: the airing of grievances right now. If you'd like to
- 2:31:53Speaker 1: share anything, Spence.
- 2:31:54Speaker 5: Yeah, I caught a couple of grievances. Did I hear
- 2:31:57Speaker 5: that James.
- 2:31:59Speaker 5: You were a hall monitor? Of course you were a
- 2:32:01Speaker 5: hall monitor.
- 2:32:03Speaker 13: And did I hear that you parlayed that into giving
- 2:32:05Speaker 13: out traffic tickets?
- 2:32:06Speaker 4: See, you're doing the thing that you did last time
- 2:32:09Speaker 4: someone piggybacked.
- 2:32:11Speaker 2: It's not necessary.
- 2:32:11Speaker 5: No, we don't want to get into the misogyny.
- 2:32:13Speaker 13: I'm just wondering if you were actually giving out parking tickets.
- 2:32:16Speaker 2: Continue with crosstalk. I heard a little... Oh, shoot, man.
- 2:32:19Speaker 2: Spence's mic doesn't work.
- 2:32:23Speaker 5: I didn't hear the entire thing.
- 2:32:25Speaker 1: Someone was airing a grievance against the parking enforcement. At
- 2:32:28Speaker 1: the U at the university of Utah.
- 2:32:30Speaker 13: Well, I think anyone who has experience with parking enforcement
- 2:32:34Speaker 13: at the university of Utah can echo that.
- 2:32:36Speaker 2: Can we say something?
- 2:32:37Speaker 1: It doesn't have to just, that's not unique to the
- 2:32:39Speaker 1: university of Utah. If you've had an encounter with parking
- 2:32:42Speaker 1: enforcement anywhere on planet earth, it's, it's usually not a
- 2:32:46Speaker 1: fun experience.
- 2:32:47Speaker 13: It's downright impossible to find a place to park up
- 2:32:51Speaker 13: there though.
- 2:32:52Speaker 5: And it always, that's not a new deal either.
- 2:32:54Speaker 6: Okay.
- 2:32:55Speaker 2: We're, We're getting an argument developing here on the text line.
- 2:32:58Speaker 5: What's going on? The half-dirty clothes. I must have missed
- 2:33:02Speaker 5: that part.
- 2:33:02Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:33:03Speaker 1: Somewhat air to grievance with half-clean laundry. What do you
- 2:33:06Speaker 1: do with half-clean laundry? It's not dirty enough to wash yet,
- 2:33:09Speaker 1: according to this assertion, but it's too dirty to put
- 2:33:12Speaker 1: back in your drawer.
- 2:33:14Speaker 2: I think that if it's too dirty to put back
- 2:33:16Speaker 2: in the drawer, it's time to wash it.
- 2:33:17Speaker 5: Yeah, for sure.
- 2:33:19Speaker 1: And several people are saying, no, they just need to
- 2:33:22Speaker 1: air out a little bit.
- 2:33:23Speaker 2: So where should you put it?
- 2:33:24Speaker 1: You should put it in the washing machine, and you
- 2:33:26Speaker 1: should wash it.
- 2:33:26Speaker 5: I'm with you on this. And also, it does depend
- 2:33:29Speaker 5: on the clothing.
- 2:33:31Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:33:31Speaker 13: Because I heard you say you don't... I don't think
- 2:33:33Speaker 13: you're supposed to wash jeans, correct? Unless they're, like, stains
- 2:33:37Speaker 13: on the jeans.
- 2:33:37Speaker 1: Yeah, there's people who say, like, denim is not supposed
- 2:33:40Speaker 1: to be washed. That's disgusting if you're not, like.
- 2:33:45Speaker 13: You've got to wash things. Yeah, if you're wearing jeans
- 2:33:48Speaker 13: all the time, maybe like once a week. Now, if
- 2:33:51Speaker 13: you spill something on the jeans, wash the jeans.
- 2:33:53Speaker 1: I'll wear jeans like four to five times before I
- 2:33:57Speaker 1: wash them unless there's a spill.
- 2:33:58Speaker 13: I'm a little anal about laundry. I don't know if
- 2:34:01Speaker 13: it was as a result of the way my mother
- 2:34:04Speaker 13: handled things. I feel like I'm constantly doing laundry. And ultimately,
- 2:34:09Speaker 13: if you do it consistently, you don't have to worry
- 2:34:11Speaker 13: about the entire big pile of at the end of
- 2:34:14Speaker 13: the week.
- 2:34:15Speaker 5: So just do a couple of loads a week and
- 2:34:17Speaker 5: you're good.
- 2:34:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:34:19Speaker 13: One thing that is uniquely Utah, and I don't fully
- 2:34:23Speaker 13: understand this. And I I've been told this by people
- 2:34:25Speaker 13: who like, for instance, I'll be in an Uber or something.
- 2:34:32Speaker 13: Why don't we know that the left lane is for
- 2:34:34Speaker 13: passing in Utah on the freeway?
- 2:34:37Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 2:34:39Speaker 13: This is like, I hear a lot of people oftentimes,
- 2:34:41Speaker 13: but I go, the only happens in Utah.
- 2:34:43Speaker 5: Like you'd, have never been out of the state. That
- 2:34:45Speaker 5: happens in a lot of places.
- 2:34:47Speaker 13: One thing that appears to be very specific to our
- 2:34:50Speaker 13: state is way too many people don't know that the
- 2:34:54Speaker 13: left lane on the freeway is for passing. And then they're,
- 2:34:56Speaker 13: they're just chilling going like 65 miles an hour in
- 2:34:59Speaker 13: the left lane. And I actually talked to, I don't
- 2:35:03Speaker 13: know if it was somebody who worked at UDOT or something,
- 2:35:05Speaker 13: but a lot of the accidents that we have on
- 2:35:08Speaker 13: our freeways are as a result of people who are
- 2:35:11Speaker 13: in the left lane going 65 miles an hour, and
- 2:35:14Speaker 13: therefore the people that are using the left lane to
- 2:35:15Speaker 13: pass go right to go around them and end up
- 2:35:19Speaker 13: getting in car accidents on the freeway. There is something
- 2:35:23Speaker 13: unique about Utah where the left lane is not for passing.
- 2:35:27Speaker 5: People don't seem to understand that.
- 2:35:29Speaker 2: If you want to.
- 2:35:29Speaker 1: Camp out in the left lane, you've got to be
- 2:35:31Speaker 1: going nine miles an hour over the speed limit.
- 2:35:34Speaker 5: You need to be passing someone on the right. It's
- 2:35:37Speaker 5: for passing.
- 2:35:38Speaker 1: But if you're going to camp out in the left lane...
- 2:35:41Speaker 1: You have to be going over the speed limit.
- 2:35:43Speaker 5: Oh, for sure.
- 2:35:44Speaker 2: You can't go the speed limit or slower than the
- 2:35:46Speaker 2: speed limit to be in the left lane. You cannot.
- 2:35:48Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:35:50Speaker 13: And that is one that appears to be pretty unique
- 2:35:53Speaker 13: to our lovely community here.
- 2:35:56Speaker 2: That's fair.
- 2:35:58Speaker 5: Seems to be a little bit frustrating.
- 2:36:02Speaker 1: I got to air it because the grievance came in.
- 2:36:05Speaker 1: Stop with the BYU chuds on Utah radio. How dare
- 2:36:08Speaker 1: you call Jerem Jordan a chud?
- 2:36:11Speaker 2: I don't like that.
- 2:36:12Speaker 5: Look, Jerem Jordan and Spencer Layton are very sweet guys.
- 2:36:16Speaker 2: I'm going to keep having Jerem on the show.
- 2:36:18Speaker 13: And I will have Spencer Layton on the show and
- 2:36:20Speaker 13: occasionally Blaine Fowler. And we will cover every team that
- 2:36:24Speaker 13: plays sports in our state, including Utah and BYU and
- 2:36:28Speaker 13: the Jazz and the Mammoth and RSL and hopefully a
- 2:36:32Speaker 13: baseball team at some point. We have a brewing beef
- 2:36:36Speaker 13: between Ryan Smith and the Millers, apparently. Yeah, what's going on? Well,
- 2:36:40Speaker 13: I was under the understanding that the Millers actually... I
- 2:36:43Speaker 13: don't know if they have, like, exclusivity. But when I
- 2:36:47Speaker 13: first saw the clip, my first thought was, Ryan must
- 2:36:51Speaker 13: be talking about helping the Millers and maybe invest in
- 2:36:54Speaker 13: the project.
- 2:36:55Speaker 2: That was my hope.
- 2:36:56Speaker 13: And then there's some rumors out there that actually, no,
- 2:36:59Speaker 13: he's going to try to go ahead and do this. Look,
- 2:37:01Speaker 13: I don't know anything about those two families behind the scenes.
- 2:37:06Speaker 5: But apparently... If this is a real deal, this is
- 2:37:11Speaker 5: going to be something interesting to watch.
- 2:37:12Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 2:37:13Speaker 5: I mean, look, the Millers have a plan in place.
- 2:37:16Speaker 5: They have land.
- 2:37:18Speaker 13: They have a public-private partnership agreed to by the government already.
- 2:37:24Speaker 5: It's dirt and shovel. It's turnkey here.
- 2:37:27Speaker 1: So we're looking at a city Creek gateway, kind of
- 2:37:29Speaker 1: a situation developing with professional baseball teams.
- 2:37:32Speaker 13: Like the Hatfields and the McCoy's man. This is some
- 2:37:34Speaker 13: interesting stuff here. So initially when the, when the clip
- 2:37:38Speaker 13: started circulating, my first thought was like, this must be
- 2:37:42Speaker 13: Ryan supporting the Millers as potentially part of the team
- 2:37:47Speaker 13: to get baseball here. I mean, look, before Ryan bought
- 2:37:52Speaker 13: the jazz, he was heavily involved as I believe Qualtrics
- 2:37:57Speaker 13: was a big sponsor before Ryan actually bought them outright.
- 2:38:01Speaker 13: And I'm quite sure that the relationships there were really good.
- 2:38:05Speaker 2: But who knows, man?
- 2:38:06Speaker 5: Rich people are weird. They like to get they like
- 2:38:09Speaker 5: to start problems, cause issues.
- 2:38:13Speaker 2: We're going to have to take sides or you know what?
- 2:38:16Speaker 1: Two major league baseball teams to Salt Lake City, question mark.
- 2:38:20Speaker 5: Little Yankees, a Mets situation.
- 2:38:22Speaker 2: Why not?
- 2:38:23Speaker 13: Probably not at this point. I don't think we have
- 2:38:25Speaker 13: the infrastructure or the, what would that, what would.
- 2:38:27Speaker 1: It be called if we had to bait two teams
- 2:38:31Speaker 1: and then they have to play series against each other.
- 2:38:33Speaker 1: You know, like the Bay bridge series, Oakland days and,
- 2:38:37Speaker 1: and San Francisco giants, the subway series for the, the
- 2:38:40Speaker 1: Mets and the Yankees. What would we call it here
- 2:38:43Speaker 1: in salt Lake? The, the, the dying Lake series. We
- 2:38:48Speaker 1: used to have a lake series, the, the arsenic in
- 2:38:51Speaker 1: the air series.
- 2:38:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:38:52Speaker 5: James, I did maybe the mountain ranges or something. Uh, yeah.
- 2:38:56Speaker 6: Right.
- 2:38:56Speaker 1: Cause Ryan would probably want to put, put it in
- 2:38:59Speaker 1: like Lehigh, the professional baseball team.
- 2:39:01Speaker 5: But probably even further South.
- 2:39:05Speaker 1: It's just, it's just out there on an Island in
- 2:39:07Speaker 1: Utah Lake next to vineyard.
- 2:39:10Speaker 13: There could be a North South situation jets in the
- 2:39:12Speaker 13: shark situation here. Um, I think the Millers are a
- 2:39:16Speaker 13: little bit more inclined to support the capital city. And
- 2:39:20Speaker 13: if we call it how it is, Ryan wants everything
- 2:39:22Speaker 13: in Utah County. His threat to take the Jazz South
- 2:39:27Speaker 13: was not thinly veiled.
- 2:39:28Speaker 5: He was ready to do that.
- 2:39:31Speaker 13: He was actually talked out of it, my understanding is,
- 2:39:34Speaker 13: by the Angels and the players.
- 2:39:36Speaker 2: They're like, dude, please don't make us be in. American
- 2:39:41Speaker 2: for one of.
- 2:39:42Speaker 13: The Lakers going to stay at La Quinta and eat
- 2:39:43Speaker 13: Jimmy John's like keep it in the capital city, dude.
- 2:39:46Speaker 13: They just built this massive airport. You know, nobody wants
- 2:39:49Speaker 13: to stay in a, you know, in a, in a
- 2:39:52Speaker 13: holiday inn and smash some cubbies on a road trip
- 2:39:54Speaker 13: to play your NBA team.
- 2:39:56Speaker 5: But he wanted to do it.
- 2:39:58Speaker 13: And look to, to, to his credit as, as, and I,
- 2:40:01Speaker 13: I know people are uncomfortable with this and that's completely
- 2:40:04Speaker 13: within your right. He parlayed that threat into a billion
- 2:40:07Speaker 13: dollars from our government to keep the jazz here and to,
- 2:40:10Speaker 13: invest in infrastructure for the Delta center in the surrounding area.
- 2:40:14Speaker 5: And look what Ryan and his group pulled off with
- 2:40:17Speaker 5: a mammoth is miraculous. Okay.
- 2:40:20Speaker 13: So you, we can bellyache about the taxpayer dollars and
- 2:40:23Speaker 13: there's some very valid complaints there and I get it.
- 2:40:27Speaker 13: But at the same time, Ryan and his group have
- 2:40:29Speaker 13: shown that they have the ability to make things happen.
- 2:40:33Speaker 13: When a lot of people think it wasn't, when he
- 2:40:35Speaker 13: talked about expanding, as far as the NHL goes, I'm like, dude,
- 2:40:38Speaker 13: the NHL is not expanding anytime soon. And then by
- 2:40:41Speaker 13: some sort of miraculous happenstance, a team just becomes available.
- 2:40:46Speaker 13: Ryan's like, just send them. And it works. He deserves
- 2:40:50Speaker 13: a lot of credit for that. So I know the
- 2:40:53Speaker 13: Millers are deathly serious about baseball. I have seen their plans.
- 2:40:56Speaker 13: We had Steve Starks in the studio for an hour
- 2:40:58Speaker 13: when they announced. He opened his books. He showed me
- 2:41:00Speaker 13: the plans. Governor Cox is on record. We're ready with
- 2:41:04Speaker 13: this deal and this partnership. So I don't know if
- 2:41:07Speaker 13: this is a power play by Ryan. I don't know
- 2:41:09Speaker 13: if it's him wanting to join up with the Millers,
- 2:41:11Speaker 13: but my sincere hope is it just ends up with
- 2:41:14Speaker 13: a baseball team here.
- 2:41:15Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:41:15Speaker 5: No matter what.
- 2:41:16Speaker 1: So team up instead of fighting against each other to
- 2:41:19Speaker 1: maximize the likelihood.
- 2:41:21Speaker 13: So here's another theory, right? And I have nothing to
- 2:41:25Speaker 13: back this up. The Miller's just announced they're bringing minor
- 2:41:29Speaker 13: league football here.
- 2:41:31Speaker 6: Right.
- 2:41:33Speaker 13: And I'm quite sure what they're hoping. And I, I
- 2:41:36Speaker 13: am very skeptical with this.
- 2:41:37Speaker 12: Okay.
- 2:41:38Speaker 5: Okay.
- 2:41:39Speaker 13: I'm quite sure what they're hoping if they can show
- 2:41:41Speaker 13: proof of concept five, six, seven years down the road, NFL, right?
- 2:41:50Speaker 13: And look, whoever, whether it's the Millers or Ryan, whoever
- 2:41:54Speaker 13: brings the NFL here, checkmate.
- 2:41:56Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:41:58Speaker 5: Checkmate.
- 2:41:59Speaker 13: Oh, how's your basketball team? Oh, is RSL still here? Oh,
- 2:42:03Speaker 13: you have a baseball team.
- 2:42:04Speaker 5: That's cute. We have the NFL here.
- 2:42:06Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:42:07Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:42:08Speaker 5: That's the ultimate prize.
- 2:42:10Speaker 13: And I think, you know, maybe Ryan sees the Miller's
- 2:42:13Speaker 13: bringing minor league football here and maybe they're able to
- 2:42:15Speaker 13: make that work. And our community continues to grow population.
- 2:42:19Speaker 13: Our economic stability continues to thrive and improve. And then
- 2:42:24Speaker 13: at some point, maybe Roger Goodell looks at our market.
- 2:42:26Speaker 13: If we keep growing, we're a, we, we, we are
- 2:42:29Speaker 13: a viable NFL market. If we keep growing, there's no
- 2:42:31Speaker 13: doubt about that. If Cleveland is Salt Lake is sorry.
- 2:42:36Speaker 13: I mean, I don't think there's doubt. I don't have
- 2:42:39Speaker 13: any doubt that we would be able to support an
- 2:42:41Speaker 13: NFL team here.
- 2:42:42Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 2:42:43Speaker 1: The doubt comes in whether or not the other NFL
- 2:42:46Speaker 1: owners would feel the same way.
- 2:42:48Speaker 5: The NFL.
- 2:42:48Speaker 2: They have to approve. It's a board of governors, so
- 2:42:52Speaker 2: to speak.
- 2:42:52Speaker 6: Right, right.
- 2:42:53Speaker 5: But the NFL would work in Middle America. I mean,
- 2:42:57Speaker 5: the NFL would work in.
- 2:42:58Speaker 2: Peoria, Illinois. It works in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
- 2:43:02Speaker 5: It would work anywhere.
- 2:43:04Speaker 2: And so.
- 2:43:05Speaker 13: I really believe our market has shown, with the way
- 2:43:08Speaker 13: we show up for the Jazz, now the Mammoth, RSL
- 2:43:11Speaker 13: can't score a goal and they still sell games out.
- 2:43:14Speaker 13: College football, Utah, BYU, selling out every single game. We
- 2:43:18Speaker 13: get baseball here after four or five years. We show
- 2:43:21Speaker 13: we can support that. The NFL can't ignore us forever.
- 2:43:26Speaker 13: We're growing population-wise, economically we're stable. And I think that's
- 2:43:31Speaker 13: what the Millers see as their endgame. And Ryan is
- 2:43:34Speaker 13: probably looking at this and going, well, wait a second.
- 2:43:37Speaker 13: I'm the big dog on the block. So this is
- 2:43:40Speaker 13: going to be fascinating to watch behind the scenes, how
- 2:43:42Speaker 13: this unfolds.
- 2:43:44Speaker 1: AI will have killed us by the time we're ready
- 2:43:46Speaker 1: for an NFL.
- 2:43:47Speaker 5: Franchise, unfortunately. You're such a buzzkill, bro.
- 2:43:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it's too bad. I was feeling excited for a second.
- 2:43:53Speaker 5: What do we got, 10 years? Is that within the
- 2:43:55Speaker 5: next decade?
- 2:43:56Speaker 2: Yeah, something like that.
- 2:43:57Speaker 5: How do you think that is? Is it Terminator? Is
- 2:43:59Speaker 5: it like Skynet is active?
- 2:44:00Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:44:02Speaker 2: Except they won't be like walking robots.
- 2:44:03Speaker 1: It'll just be drones show up and you're like, oh,
- 2:44:05Speaker 1: my Amazon package is dead.
- 2:44:08Speaker 5: Man. So we won't even have a chance to fight back.
- 2:44:13Speaker 1: Unless you get one of those cool drone copter motorcycle things.
- 2:44:19Speaker 5: I don't know what that is. You've seen the drones, right?
- 2:44:23Speaker 5: I know what a drone is, yes.
- 2:44:24Speaker 2: They have the four.
- 2:44:26Speaker 1: fans, basically, before helicopter plays. Somebody invented the motorcycle version
- 2:44:31Speaker 1: of that. And he's like, this is going to hit
- 2:44:33Speaker 1: the market soon. We're going to have it as air
- 2:44:35Speaker 1: taxis for the LA Olympics. It's going to be amazing.
- 2:44:39Speaker 1: And everyone's like, cool, how much are they going to cost?
- 2:44:41Speaker 1: And he's like, it's going to be about $ 300, 000 a piece.
- 2:44:44Speaker 2: And people are like, oh, I can't buy that.
- 2:44:47Speaker 13: How would drone motorcycles protect us from evil drones dropping bombs?
- 2:44:51Speaker 1: Because you can then get on their level and you
- 2:44:54Speaker 1: can use your Counter-weapons, counter-offensive attacks.
- 2:44:58Speaker 5: Do the motorcycles have lasers?
- 2:45:01Speaker 2: We're going to put them on there.
- 2:45:03Speaker 5: So that technology is not established yet?
- 2:45:05Speaker 6: Not yet.
- 2:45:07Speaker 5: So we're basically in a race.
- 2:45:09Speaker 1: The thing with drones is, like, small drones, you can
- 2:45:12Speaker 1: literally smash those things with a rock. You know what
- 2:45:15Speaker 1: they were using to the first things they used, or
- 2:45:18Speaker 1: some of the first things they used for counter-drone stuff?
- 2:45:21Speaker 2: They used eagles.
- 2:45:21Speaker 3: Eagles.
- 2:45:22Speaker 1: They trained eagles and were just like, go kill that drone.
- 2:45:24Speaker 1: And the eagles were just like, yeah, I don't like
- 2:45:26Speaker 1: these weird things flying around making funny noises.
- 2:45:28Speaker 2: So, like, drones are not sturdy. We'll just throw rocks
- 2:45:33Speaker 2: from our flying motorcycles.
- 2:45:36Speaker 13: But the assertion is they're still going to win and
- 2:45:38Speaker 13: kill us in the next decade.
- 2:45:39Speaker 2: Eventually. But we're going to fight back.
- 2:45:41Speaker 5: What are we even doing here, then?
- 2:45:43Speaker 2: That's a great question.
- 2:45:44Speaker 5: Just living day by day.
- 2:45:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:45:47Speaker 1: Everybody enjoy the weekend. We'll be back on Monday with
- 2:45:50Speaker 1: the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 2:45:51Speaker 2: Thanks for listening. That's ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
