- 0:00Welcome to "the Hoover Daily Report". Ideas Advancing
- 0:03Freedom. It's Tuesday, June 9th, twenty twenty six.
- 0:06Today, John Cochrane writes of another concern newly minted Fed Chair Kevin
- 0:11Warsh will face: uncertain forecasting. Andy Hall finds that beyond all the
- 0:16doom-and-gloom projections of its effects; video content creators are
- 0:20loving AI. And H.R. McMaster speaks with a leading legislator in the Merz
- 0:25coalition governing Germany, who discusses the future of US-Germany
- 0:30relations amid a changing international order.
- 0:33The Fed’s Forecasting Problem.
- 0:35In this week’s Grumpy Economist Weekly Rant, Senior Fellow John H. Cochrane
- 0:39examines one of the central challenges facing the Federal Reserve under Kevin
- 0:44Warsh’s leadership: how to make policy when forecasts and models remain deeply
- 0:49uncertain. Cochrane argues that the Fed’s inflation forecasts have repeatedly
- 0:54proved unreliable, from misplaced expectations in 2016 to the belief that
- 0:58inflation would fade quickly in 2021 and 2022. Cochrane distinguishes between
- 1:03forecasts, which try to predict what will happen, and models, which are better
- 1:08suited to asking “what if” questions about policy choices. But both, he
- 1:12argues, have limits. When central bankers do not fully understand the forces
- 1:17driving inflation, monetary policy should be guided by caution, evidence, and the
- 1:22capacity to respond decisively to events rather than relying too heavily on
- 1:27uncertain predictions.
- 1:28Memes Over Doom: How TikTokers and YouTubers See AI.
- 1:32Taking on the often negative perception of AI among the American electorate,
- 1:37Senior Fellow Andrew B. Hall looks at a specific subset of internet savvy
- 1:42individuals, digital creators on YouTube and TikTok, and finds their responses
- 1:48quite positive. After sifting through 25,000 videos, Hall says his research
- 1:53team found much more acceptance of AI than rejection. “There is way more
- 1:58content that embraces AI than you might expect if you only read national news,
- 2:03perused certain corners of X, or listened to politicians and lab leaders constantly
- 2:09discussing the public’s AI backlash,” Hall writes. “On TikTok and YouTube,
- 2:14content embracing AI beats out explicitly anti-AI content by 3 to 1.”.
- 2:19Germany: The Future of Transatlantic Relations.
- 2:22Norbert Röttgen, deputy chairman of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany and
- 2:26Christian Social Union in Bavaria parliamentary group in the German
- 2:30Bundestag, joins Senior Fellow H.R. McMaster on Today’s Battlegrounds to
- 2:34discuss US-German relations; Germany’s defense, economic, and foreign policy
- 2:38priorities; strains in transatlantic relations; and the future of NATO and the
- 2:43European Union. The conversation examines Germany’s evolving approach to security
- 2:47and defense in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the changing balance
- 2:51of responsibilities within NATO, and the challenges posed by Russia, China, and
- 2:56Iran. Röttgen and McMaster also discuss economic competitiveness, energy
- 3:00security, transatlantic cooperation, democratic resilience, and the political
- 3:04and social forces reshaping Western democracies, as well as the future of the
- 3:08US-German partnership amid a changing international order.
- 3:11India-US Cooperation in the Energy Sector.
- 3:14In this new essay, D. P. Srivastava, former Indian ambassador to Iran, writes
- 3:19of the “complementaries” that could enable India to grow its relationship
- 3:24with the US. Srivastava says this can be achieved through increased trade in
- 3:29liquefied natural gas (LNG), and nuclear cooperation, especially in the wake of
- 3:35the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran in 2026. Srivastava says India’s
- 3:40intense need for LNG creates a unique market opportunity for US producers.
- 3:45India also plans to increase its nuclear power output by more than 1,000 percent
- 3:51between now and 2047, and US suppliers and power plant designs could assist
- 3:56India in meeting this goal.
- 3:58Popular Conceptions of Fourth Amendment Curtilage.
- 4:00In a new paper for the Michigan Law Review, Senior Fellow Orin S. Kerr of
- 4:04Stanford Law School and Matthew B. Kugler of Northwestern University’s Pritzker
- 4:08School of Law find that courts have a different
- 4:10view of how curtilage—the part of a property immediately
- 4:13outside and around a dwelling—should be protected by the Fourth Amendment. Using
- 4:17three studies with 600 participants each, they find that ordinary citizens think a
- 4:21broader part of a person’s property should be protected from warrantless
- 4:24search and seizure than what current doctrine states. “In the doctrine,
- 4:28curtilage is limited to the area immediately around the home. But the
- 4:31public disagrees,” Kerr and Kugler write. “To most people, privacy in the home
- 4:35extends to the entire property. If it’s part of the property, it’s private. In
- 4:39short, the public has a far more expansive conception of home privacy than
- 4:42courts allow.”.
- 4:43Featured Hoover Publication.
- 4:45Critical Conditions: An Operating Framework for Allied Economic Statecraft.
- 4:49Hoover Fellow Ike Freymann and coauthors Hugo Bromley and Kazuto Suzuki have
- 4:54developed a four-layer evaluation rubric to allow the US and its allies to rapidly
- 4:59assess and prioritize the most
- 5:01dangerous supply-chain dependencies that exist across their shared economies.
