- 0:41Speaker 4: Chip Howard Sports Talk Dusty filling in for Chip today,
- 0:44Speaker 4: who is out? We expect him back tomorrow. Actually, I'm
- 0:47Speaker 4: only kind of half filling in for Chip. Caleb's here
- 0:50Speaker 4: with me, Hattie. You can say this is a two
- 0:52Speaker 4: man job. This is for sure two man jobs. So
- 0:55Speaker 4: in this hour, it's going to be me and Caleb.
- 0:57Speaker 4: In hour and number two, the writers will take over
- 1:01Speaker 4: and run. The inmates will be running the asylum. So yeah,
- 1:06Speaker 4: Cessna and Rusty Berson will be here for hour number two,
- 1:10Speaker 4: as they always are. They'll just be here without Chip
- 1:12Speaker 4: doing whatever they want to talk about, and there was plenty.
- 1:16Speaker 4: What a weekend of college football.
- 1:20Speaker 5: I'll have to moderate make sure they don't drink too
- 1:21Speaker 5: much Marin kool.
- 1:22Speaker 4: Aid after that defensive performance. I don't think there's gonna
- 1:26Speaker 4: be a ton of Marin kool aid. But they were
- 1:29Speaker 4: one of the schools that did survive in the top
- 1:31Speaker 4: ten after four of the top ten teams did go
- 1:33Speaker 4: down this weekend. Miami got it kicked off on Friday.
- 1:39Speaker 4: I hesitate to say bad loss it's to an unranked
- 1:44Speaker 4: Louisville team.
- 1:45Speaker 6: But I lost Louisville though, but.
- 1:47Speaker 4: They were double digit favorites at home, so in that case,
- 1:52Speaker 4: it is a bad loss. But I think we're gonna
- 1:54Speaker 4: see more of this. I think we're gonna see more
- 1:56Speaker 4: of these weekends because teams are so even a college
- 2:00Speaker 4: football I'll tell you after the A and M game
- 2:04Speaker 4: was over, I mean, obviously we had Vandy LSU earlier,
- 2:07Speaker 4: which was a spectacular game. I didn't really get to
- 2:10Speaker 4: sit down and watch that one until Sunday because we
- 2:12Speaker 4: were on the radio pregaming a game we knew was
- 2:18Speaker 4: not going to kick off for three hours after we
- 2:20Speaker 4: got off the air, But that's how it worked out
- 2:22Speaker 4: this weekend. But after the an M game was over
- 2:27Speaker 4: and I was calmed down a little bit after, you know,
- 2:30Speaker 4: watching the Aggie defense, who had been so good over
- 2:33Speaker 4: this homestand give up five hundred yards of offense and
- 2:37Speaker 4: not not make much of an effort to stop Arkansas
- 2:41Speaker 4: at any point. And we're gonna listen to Mike Elko
- 2:43Speaker 4: here in a little bit, and he was still a
- 2:46Speaker 4: little salty about the way his defense performed over the weekend.
- 2:49Speaker 5: I didn't see any chairs throwing on the sidelines, but.
- 2:52Speaker 4: Well I didn't, but I don't know if there were
- 2:55Speaker 4: any reports from the locker room because he had to
- 2:59Speaker 4: be hot at halftime because the final two minutes of
- 3:02Speaker 4: the first half, I think we're defining because I'm thinking, okay,
- 3:05Speaker 4: we're up twenty one to six, kept them out of
- 3:08Speaker 4: the end zone, had a couple of busts, but it's
- 3:12Speaker 4: looking a little better. Get a stop, hold them to
- 3:15Speaker 4: another field, go go score one more time. Put this
- 3:17Speaker 4: thing away. The Arkansas fans will empty out and it'll
- 3:20Speaker 4: be over. And two minutes later, it's twenty to twenty one.
- 3:26Speaker 4: And the stadium was revved up and you knew it
- 3:28Speaker 4: was on. It was a bad It was a bad
- 3:32Speaker 4: sequence where you had a couple opportunities to get out
- 3:36Speaker 4: on third down plays and gave up big plays for
- 3:40Speaker 4: the first drive, and then one of I'm going to
- 3:46Speaker 4: say the only bad offensive sequence of the game, they
- 3:48Speaker 4: did punt twice. Every time they got an initial first down.
- 3:53Speaker 4: They put points on the board the entire game. Actually
- 3:56Speaker 4: both teams almost because him did stop Floorida on a
- 4:01Speaker 4: fourth down at midfield, but neither team punted if they
- 4:05Speaker 4: got the initial first down the entire game, which is
- 4:09Speaker 4: a crazy stat and not good for the career defensive
- 4:13Speaker 4: coordinators on either side. I don't think the Arkansas offensive
- 4:18Speaker 4: or defensive coordinators have any hope of being retained.
- 4:21Speaker 5: Petrino fired the defensive coordinator when he right Bakover's interest.
- 4:24Speaker 4: And he's got another interview, but I don't think either
- 4:27Speaker 4: one of those guys are going to be retained in
- 4:28Speaker 4: the end.
- 4:29Speaker 5: Going back to what you said about the end of
- 4:30Speaker 5: the first half, I was there in Fayetteville and it
- 4:33Speaker 5: is really crazy. The first quarter the atmosphere was so dead.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Didn't you can hear the fans on TV.
- 4:41Speaker 7: No.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Yeah, it didn't seem like there was anybody in the
- 4:43Speaker 5: stadium that was a Razorback fan that was proud to
- 4:45Speaker 5: be a Razorback fan. But after they got it to
- 4:47Speaker 5: twenty one to twenty the third and fourth quarter, they
- 4:50Speaker 5: turned it on and I've never seen fans go from
- 4:53Speaker 5: being that apathetic to being that excited.
- 4:55Speaker 4: And it was. It was a monster swing. Fortunately for
- 5:00Speaker 4: A and M, despite their defensive struggles, they never gave
- 5:04Speaker 4: Arkansas the ball with the chance to take the lead
- 5:09Speaker 4: because for the most part, AM would occasionally get a
- 5:11Speaker 4: stop and push out the two scores and then Arkansas
- 5:14Speaker 4: is having to chase back, and that's what happened at
- 5:17Speaker 4: the end of the game. Sure, a couple of miracles
- 5:20Speaker 4: could have happened with ten seconds. Now, if Petrino had
- 5:22Speaker 4: done a little bit better job managing the clock earlier
- 5:26Speaker 4: in that drive instead of letting forty five seconds run
- 5:30Speaker 4: off for no reason, then that onside kick would have
- 5:36Speaker 4: had a little bit even more behind it, because with
- 5:39Speaker 4: ten seconds you got an onside kick, you got to
- 5:41Speaker 4: get fifteen yards and you got to get a field
- 5:45Speaker 4: goal off.
- 5:46Speaker 6: That's that you basically basically did that, right.
- 5:50Speaker 4: It could happen. It's not impossible, but you have to
- 5:52Speaker 4: recover the on side kick, complete yardage in one play,
- 5:57Speaker 4: call your time out, and get your field goal off.
- 5:58Speaker 4: That's all you have time for. And that could have
- 6:02Speaker 4: been closer to fifty five seconds instead of ten with
- 6:06Speaker 4: a little better clock management on Petrino's part, But it
- 6:09Speaker 4: wasn't it. Ain and m walks out with a forty
- 6:12Speaker 4: five forty two victory. They survived the bloodbath weekend, and
- 6:16Speaker 4: we'll head to what has been a house of horrors
- 6:19Speaker 4: in Baton Rouge this weekend. It has not been good
- 6:22Speaker 4: for an end. But when this game was over, I've
- 6:26Speaker 4: got four games up on my screen, and I couldn't
- 6:30Speaker 4: pick a four game set that had Notre Dame and
- 6:34Speaker 4: USC in it, so I got that up on the tablet.
- 6:37Speaker 4: So I've got five games going for the evening, and
- 6:40Speaker 4: I'm really wanting to watch Notre Dame in USC because
- 6:43Speaker 4: that's the matchup, right, and it was a good game,
- 6:47Speaker 4: and I am watching it, but I can't take my
- 6:50Speaker 4: eyes off of the ineptitude of Texas and Kentucky. I
- 6:56Speaker 4: can't stop paying attention to Missouri and Auburn because I'm
- 7:04Speaker 4: telling you Auburn was the better team for that game,
- 7:09Speaker 4: and Kentucky was the better team for that game.
- 7:11Speaker 5: And Entucky blew that last overtime play. I don't know
- 7:14Speaker 5: how you get to first and goal in the one.
- 7:16Speaker 5: It's like us last year.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Against I absolutely I don't know why you even go
- 7:21Speaker 4: for it. All right, Texas has one hundred less than
- 7:23Speaker 4: one hundred and eighty yards for the entire game. They
- 7:26Speaker 4: have a kicker who can kick if they go backwards
- 7:31Speaker 4: on their overtime, which they did. They had negative two
- 7:34Speaker 4: yards in their winning drive. Right Their only touchdown drive
- 7:37Speaker 4: the entire game was started at the five yard line.
- 7:40Speaker 4: It was a three play, five yard drive. That's their
- 7:43Speaker 4: only touchdown the entire game. I don't understand why you
- 7:47Speaker 4: don't realize. And I understand that you're the underdog and
- 7:50Speaker 4: you haven't won a game, but I don't understand why
- 7:53Speaker 4: you don't realize you're the better team in this game.
- 7:56Speaker 4: We got stuffed on third down, made a bad play call,
- 7:59Speaker 4: did the one thing that Texas is really good at
- 8:01Speaker 4: and ran right into it and it didn't work. Go ahead,
- 8:05Speaker 4: kick the ball. Texas is gonna kick the ball. Then
- 8:09Speaker 4: Texas gonna go on offense again. You get to be
- 8:11Speaker 4: on defense in overtime number two, go second. Now you
- 8:17Speaker 4: have some decisions to make. I thought it was not
- 8:20Speaker 4: only was the play call of pulling all eleven guys
- 8:23Speaker 4: shoulder to shoulder and compacting it down and running right
- 8:27Speaker 4: up the middle for nothing a bad idea, but the
- 8:31Speaker 4: whole thought of not kicking the field goal because I'm
- 8:34Speaker 4: going to go for the win in my house when
- 8:36Speaker 4: I get the ball first in overtime was horrible because
- 8:39Speaker 4: they've been able to move the ball against Texas. They
- 8:43Speaker 4: hadn't gotten in the end zone, which is why the
- 8:44Speaker 4: score was what it was, but they'd been able to
- 8:47Speaker 4: move the ball and Texas had not. I kicked that
- 8:50Speaker 4: field goal. Every time, go play defense and survive and
- 8:55Speaker 4: you have the advantage in overtime number two.
- 8:58Speaker 5: I don't hate them. I don't hate fourth down. I
- 9:01Speaker 5: just hate doing the same thing you did three times
- 9:03Speaker 5: in a row against the Texas team that that's their
- 9:05Speaker 5: one strength is that they are physical on defense.
- 9:08Speaker 6: You gotta I hate going for it.
- 9:11Speaker 4: I just hated it in a lot of situations. And
- 9:14Speaker 4: the announcer said, hey, you have won an SEC game.
- 9:17Speaker 4: You got to go forward here and I'm like, no,
- 9:18Speaker 4: you don't. You're the better team on the field. Why
- 9:21Speaker 4: would you take a risk to let Texas win the game?
- 9:24Speaker 4: And Auburn And this is on Hugh Freeze because he
- 9:30Speaker 4: didn't go out and find another kicker when he knew
- 9:33Speaker 4: his kicker was having health issues. But that guy missed
- 9:37Speaker 4: three field goals inside of forty yards three two in
- 9:43Speaker 4: regulation that would have kept him out of overtime. And
- 9:48Speaker 4: then both Missouri and Auburn missed in the first overtime.
- 9:55Speaker 4: I wanted to watch the good football of Notre Dame USC,
- 10:00Speaker 4: but there was so much going on in these other
- 10:01Speaker 4: two games. I just couldn't stop doing it. And then
- 10:04Speaker 4: I and let me go back to Texas for a
- 10:06Speaker 4: minute because this stood out to me, and I texted.
- 10:10Speaker 4: I was texting with Bryce and Louis because we'd done
- 10:13Speaker 4: the pregame together that day. Right at the end of
- 10:16Speaker 4: the game, when sarks postgame comments where half the teams
- 10:22Speaker 4: in the league lost today and we weren't one of them,
- 10:25Speaker 4: I went, Oh, it's worse than I thought. If we're
- 10:29Speaker 4: down to well, half the team's lost. Yes, half the
- 10:33Speaker 4: teams lose every weekend, that is correct, But I don't
- 10:36Speaker 4: think that's what you're looking for a team that was
- 10:38Speaker 4: preseason number one to be talking about after squeaking by
- 10:42Speaker 4: who everyone considers to be by a margin, the worst
- 10:47Speaker 4: team in the SEC and getting doubled up in yardage
- 10:51Speaker 4: the whole time.
- 10:52Speaker 5: That's the craziest thing to me is how Kentucky had
- 10:56Speaker 5: three hundred and ninety five total yards and only scored
- 10:59Speaker 5: thirteen points.
- 11:00Speaker 6: So it's ridiculous.
- 11:01Speaker 4: One of the things that I always look at beginning
- 11:04Speaker 4: of the week, and these are the opening lines that
- 11:07Speaker 4: I pulled up from yesterday. I know they don't match
- 11:09Speaker 4: up with what a couple sites say we're opening lines,
- 11:12Speaker 4: but these are the ones that were out early Sunday morning,
- 11:15Speaker 4: So that's close enough to opening for me. If there
- 11:18Speaker 4: was another line earlier, I don't know. I expect more
- 11:22Speaker 4: upsets this weekend. Five home dogs in the SEC in
- 11:28Speaker 4: seven games this weekend.
- 11:30Speaker 8: Wow.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Let's start with the teams that are going to be
- 11:34Speaker 4: home favorites. Oklahoma a four and a half point favorite
- 11:39Speaker 4: over old Miss at home.
- 11:41Speaker 5: Don't think Oklahoma can keep up on offense.
- 11:45Speaker 4: There's something about Old Miss that doesn't add up, and
- 11:47Speaker 4: I have no idea how Oklahoma actually scored last weekend.
- 11:52Speaker 4: They got twenty six on South Carolina. But Oklahoma is
- 11:59Speaker 4: not good offensively. I do think John Mattier is a
- 12:03Speaker 4: good quarterback, but Oklahoma's no running game, which they magically
- 12:08Speaker 4: had this weekend. But they've showed that in no other
- 12:10Speaker 4: game this year, so they have to help him out
- 12:13Speaker 4: and come up with a running game twice.
- 12:15Speaker 6: Well, it's the offensive line, really.
- 12:16Speaker 5: Yeah, offensive line was really bad against Texas.
- 12:20Speaker 6: That's what they were for them in that one.
- 12:22Speaker 4: But in every other game they haven't had a running
- 12:24Speaker 4: game to go with it either. And I don't think
- 12:26Speaker 4: they have explosive receivers. So you're asking one guy to
- 12:31Speaker 4: do everything for you, and I think it's too much
- 12:33Speaker 4: to ask. Yeah, I was surprised that they were one
- 12:36Speaker 4: of the two home favorites this weekend, four and a
- 12:41Speaker 4: half points over Old Miss. That one caught my eye.
- 12:44Speaker 5: The only team the one guy strategy has worked for
- 12:46Speaker 5: so far this year is Georgia Tech, and that's in
- 12:48Speaker 5: the a SEC, so it's not really the same.
- 12:51Speaker 4: And so far, I don't think they're gonna go undefeated.
- 12:54Speaker 4: I don't think they're gonna make make it well.
- 12:57Speaker 6: I highly doubt it.
- 12:57Speaker 5: It's the ACC and they always they're the new PAC twelve.
- 13:01Speaker 5: They just cannibalize themselves every year.
- 13:03Speaker 4: Well they got half the PAC twelve in the weight now,
- 13:05Speaker 4: so but I think there's gonna be more pitfalls in
- 13:09Speaker 4: the SEC, and eventually someone's gonna grab Georgia Tech before
- 13:13Speaker 4: they play that Georgia game. I think that one's going
- 13:15Speaker 4: to be a challenge. The only other home team that
- 13:19Speaker 4: is favored this weekend in the SEC Vanderbilt a three
- 13:23Speaker 4: point favorite over Missouri, who was just on top of
- 13:27Speaker 4: the world not long ago.
- 13:28Speaker 5: Isn't that the first time Vanderbilt's favored against a ranked
- 13:30Speaker 5: team that.
- 13:31Speaker 6: Was last last week?
- 13:32Speaker 4: That was last week, second time, that second time, and
- 13:36Speaker 4: they won that game, right they did, so they took
- 13:39Speaker 4: care of LSU. I agree with this. I think overall
- 13:45Speaker 4: Vanderbilt looks better when you really break it down, though. LSU,
- 13:52Speaker 4: for whatever reason, cannot defend a running quarterback.
- 13:57Speaker 6: I hope for US, I.
- 13:59Speaker 4: Hope that that holds for another week, another week going
- 14:04Speaker 4: into it. I didn't like Vanderbilt playing LSU having to
- 14:07Speaker 4: go to Vandy this weekend, and I can't remember if
- 14:11Speaker 4: we actually talked about this on the pregame show or
- 14:13Speaker 4: just during the breaks as we like to chat. But
- 14:18Speaker 4: LSU's been slopping around and winning games and not changing anything,
- 14:23Speaker 4: and I didn't really think it would be great for
- 14:26Speaker 4: A and M if they got a wake up call
- 14:27Speaker 4: the week before A and M headed to Death Valley
- 14:30Speaker 4: and started to actually realize that they can't slide by
- 14:34Speaker 4: on the way that they've been playing. And then secondly,
- 14:39Speaker 4: I didn't want to start adjusting their defense. Last year
- 14:42Speaker 4: when they came here and Marcel Reid came in the game,
- 14:45Speaker 4: it was like they never knew that a quarterback was
- 14:47Speaker 4: allowed to run the football. It just over and over again.
- 14:51Speaker 4: Every time he ran. They all look surprised that no
- 14:52Speaker 4: one had it.
- 14:53Speaker 5: That's my favorite football game I've ever been at.
- 14:56Speaker 4: HM.
- 14:57Speaker 6: It was okay, you gotta remember that.
- 14:59Speaker 4: I haven't been to that, right, yeah, right, I gotta
- 15:02Speaker 4: remember your age. And that's fun, right because it was
- 15:05Speaker 4: a good football game. But they seem shocked every time, like, hey,
- 15:10Speaker 4: he's allowed to do that.
- 15:11Speaker 6: Yeah, I didn't know that.
- 15:12Speaker 5: We did a little bit too against Taylor Green a lot,
- 15:15Speaker 5: so a lot. That's been something we've struggled with a
- 15:18Speaker 5: little bit as well.
- 15:19Speaker 4: I'll tell you. The thing is that apparently A and
- 15:27Speaker 4: M couldn't run his own last year, and Elko had
- 15:29Speaker 4: his famous press conference after the bowl game talking about
- 15:32Speaker 4: how bad they were at running the zone. I thought
- 15:34Speaker 4: their zone was horrendous again this weekend. So we go
- 15:37Speaker 4: up against a running quarterback. We played great man defense
- 15:42Speaker 4: all year, but we don't want to turn those guys around.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Want everybody facing the front so they can see when
- 15:47Speaker 4: the quarterback breaks out. And we failed to cover the
- 15:49Speaker 4: receiver and the running and the quarterback, and we didn't
- 15:52Speaker 4: run fit very well. Going back to the A and
- 15:56Speaker 4: M game in the defense, and we're gonna hear from
- 15:58Speaker 4: Mike Elko coming up in the next oh two or
- 16:01Speaker 4: three minutes. But it didn't matter who they played. When
- 16:07Speaker 4: guys that we've been talking about are having great seasons
- 16:10Speaker 4: and were great in this home stretch. When they've got
- 16:14Speaker 4: the C gap and they run into the D gap
- 16:17Speaker 4: and leave it wide open for a running back to
- 16:19Speaker 4: go through, it really doesn't matter how good you are. Now.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Mike Washington, I like him a lot as a running back. Yeah,
- 16:25Speaker 4: and he's amazingly fast for a two hundred and forty
- 16:27Speaker 4: pound guy. For a guy who's also large, but he's
- 16:31Speaker 4: got speed. But if you don't even get in the gap,
- 16:35Speaker 4: it doesn't matter, right, it doesn't matter how good you are.
- 16:38Speaker 4: LSU hasn't been able to run the football all year.
- 16:41Speaker 4: It's the whole reason the LSU offense stalls all the
- 16:45Speaker 4: time because they don't have anything to help them. Now,
- 16:48Speaker 4: smire out, I understand those Meyer's had his issues and
- 16:51Speaker 4: he's he hasn't been as sharp as you think, but
- 16:54Speaker 4: it's still a lot to put on a quarterback when
- 16:56Speaker 4: you don't have any running game in the SEC. You
- 16:59Speaker 4: need have a little bit of balance there and you
- 17:04Speaker 4: don't want a and m has to get that cleaned
- 17:06Speaker 4: up before they go to LSU, because if you allow
- 17:09Speaker 4: LSU to suddenly have a running game, like Oklahoma suddenly
- 17:12Speaker 4: had a running game and score twenty six points this
- 17:15Speaker 4: weekend when they hadn't had one all season, it's gonna
- 17:18Speaker 4: be a long day in Baton Rouge. Yeah, I mean
- 17:21Speaker 4: that has to stop. So let me give you the
- 17:24Speaker 4: road favorites. Now, Auburn one and a half points at Arkansas.
- 17:31Speaker 4: I can see it.
- 17:32Speaker 6: That's a tough one.
- 17:33Speaker 4: Here's the thing. Auburn's defense is good, but in Arkansas's
- 17:41Speaker 4: is not. I don't think against Air Auburn can hang,
- 17:48Speaker 4: can score enough to keep up with Arkansas.
- 17:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I agree that if Arkansas comes out and is
- 17:53Speaker 5: ready like they were against US, I think they'll be well.
- 17:56Speaker 4: I think they're rejuvenated. Yeah, after even though they lost
- 18:00Speaker 4: their fifth game of the year.
- 18:02Speaker 5: They put forty two on the number three team in
- 18:04Speaker 5: the country, so.
- 18:05Speaker 4: Right, so they're gonna have to break through. So they're
- 18:09Speaker 4: Auburn one and a half point favorite. I was surprised
- 18:12Speaker 4: that one may move more towards the middle as the
- 18:14Speaker 4: week goes on. Alabama not surprising. Thirteen and a half
- 18:18Speaker 4: at at South Carolina. Texas seven point favorite at Mississippi States.
- 18:29Speaker 5: That's a tough That's another tough one because you just
- 18:31Speaker 5: don't know what you're gonna get from Texas. Like I really,
- 18:34Speaker 5: I keep thinking they're going to turn it on and
- 18:36Speaker 5: flip that switch. And the fact that they're five and
- 18:38Speaker 5: two kind of gives more hope for that. If you're
- 18:42Speaker 5: a Longhorn fan, which obviously none of us are, but
- 18:45Speaker 5: I don't think well, if they had lost to Kentucky,
- 18:47Speaker 5: there are certainly people on over but yeah, no, no,
- 18:50Speaker 5: they'd have lost to Kentucky, I think their season would
- 18:52Speaker 5: be over and we wouldn't have to talk about him anymore.
- 18:54Speaker 4: But I think they're a better team than Mississippi State. Yeah,
- 18:57Speaker 4: but I think there are teams going in two different directions.
- 18:59Speaker 4: I still think Jeff Levy's a good coach. I don't
- 19:02Speaker 4: think he has the players. Texas is certainly a more
- 19:05Speaker 4: talented team than Mississippi State is, but seven points seems
- 19:09Speaker 4: like a very big number for Texas to overcome Tennessee.
- 19:14Speaker 4: A nine point favorite over Kentucky not a problem, and
- 19:18Speaker 4: Texas A and M a two and a half point
- 19:20Speaker 4: favorite at LSU, where they have not won since nineteen
- 19:24Speaker 4: ninety four.
- 19:25Speaker 5: The Arkansas game is the kind of game that any
- 19:27Speaker 5: coach before Elko loses. And then we lose three in
- 19:31Speaker 5: a row because they're all on the road. So the
- 19:33Speaker 5: fact that we just managed to get a win, I
- 19:36Speaker 5: think we'll be fine.
- 19:37Speaker 4: All right, So we're gonna take a break here, and
- 19:39Speaker 4: it's time for is this the final lap? Right here?
- 19:42Speaker 4: All right? It's time for the final lap, and it's
- 19:43Speaker 4: brought to us by.
- 19:44Speaker 6: Who Chad Jones?

- 21:24Speaker 10: and Chase Briscoe. Currently in on points are Christopher Bell
- 21:28Speaker 10: and Kyle Larson. Up next to the NASCAR Cup Series

- 22:08Speaker 14: Yeah.

- 22:16Speaker 12: Man, I feel like I'm in my twenties again at work,

- 22:50Speaker 2: Pickles, pickles, and that picles.
- 22:53Speaker 17: John Chipowered Evenings forty six on the Zone.
- 23:08Speaker 5: Welcome back to Chip Howard Sports Talk. Caleb and Dusty
- 23:10Speaker 5: filling in for chip Man. Now we're gonna hear from
- 23:12Speaker 5: the head coach of Texas and m Maggie's Mike olco.
- 23:15Speaker 18: First, we'll start just kind of by recapping the Arkansas game.
- 23:19Speaker 18: Start with our players of the week. Our Offensive Scout
- 23:21Speaker 18: Team Player of the Week was Chase Burton, our defensive
- 23:24Speaker 18: Scout Team with Player of the Week was Lucas Pernis,
- 23:27Speaker 18: and our Special Team Scout Player of the week was
- 23:29Speaker 18: Tiger rid And it's been good to see him get
- 23:32Speaker 18: back healthy and get out there. He's kind of back
- 23:34Speaker 18: on the travel roster, starting to get himself involved in
- 23:37Speaker 18: some special teams and so it's good to see him
- 23:39Speaker 18: healthy and doing this thing.
- 23:41Speaker 7: In terms of players of.
- 23:42Speaker 18: The week, our Offensive Lineman of the Week was Chase Basontis,
- 23:46Speaker 18: our offensive player of the week was Marcel Reid, and
- 23:50Speaker 18: our Special Teams player of the week was braveon Rogers.
- 23:53Speaker 18: I thought Chase had another phenomenal game. I think he
- 23:56Speaker 18: continues to do a really really good job of creating movement. Obviously,
- 24:00Speaker 18: our offensive line, again with no sacks, continued.
- 24:03Speaker 7: To play really really well. I said this.
- 24:05Speaker 18: After the game, and I kind of played this way out.
- 24:08Speaker 18: Marcell played his most complete game. I thought he did
- 24:11Speaker 18: what we had asked him to do, uh consistently throughout,
- 24:15Speaker 18: made plays with his arms, he made plays with his legs, distributed.
- 24:18Speaker 7: The ball really well, and so thought he did a
- 24:20Speaker 7: really good job.
- 24:21Speaker 18: And then braveyon Rodgers continues to be a major factor
- 24:25Speaker 18: for us on special teams, does a great job as
- 24:27Speaker 18: a gunner getting down against what was a very dangerous
- 24:30Speaker 18: punt returner and you know, made one big tackle and
- 24:33Speaker 18: also kind of drew a penalty that kind of backed
- 24:35Speaker 18: him up on the second.
- 24:36Speaker 7: To last drive of the game. And so really excited
- 24:40Speaker 7: with how he's playing.
- 24:41Speaker 18: Defensively, there was there was nobody, which I think just
- 24:44Speaker 18: kind of speaks to the game.
- 24:45Speaker 7: You know.
- 24:46Speaker 18: Offensively, I thought we played really really well, UH answered
- 24:49Speaker 18: the call every time we needed to. I thought it
- 24:51Speaker 18: was really great the way we went out in the
- 24:53Speaker 18: second half and just continued to make plays and make
- 24:55Speaker 18: plays to find a way to win the game, you know, defensively.
- 24:59Speaker 18: It just was it was very poor game. Didn't play well,
- 25:02Speaker 18: didn't play up to our standard, didn't do the things
- 25:04Speaker 18: that you need to do to be successful at all.
- 25:06Speaker 18: And so obviously we've got to go back to where
- 25:08Speaker 18: and get that fixed. And so we now turn our
- 25:11Speaker 18: attention to LSU. Obviously a big opportunity, a big stage,
- 25:15Speaker 18: a chance to go down to Baton Rouge for what
- 25:17Speaker 18: will be a very big game in a hostile environment,
- 25:20Speaker 18: and so another opportunity for this program to take a
- 25:23Speaker 18: step forward. And so we're looking forward to the challenge
- 25:26Speaker 18: and excited. And I'll just say this for all of
- 25:29Speaker 18: the aggi's traveling down there.
- 25:31Speaker 7: Coach Morrison and their team is playing.
- 25:33Speaker 18: Friday night at seven o'clock down in Baton Rouge, and
- 25:36Speaker 18: so if you can make it a double dip while
- 25:38Speaker 18: you're down there, we'd love to get out there and
- 25:40Speaker 18: support the girls as well.
- 25:41Speaker 7: And so from there we'll kind of open up the questions.
- 25:43Speaker 19: Coach to the right third road, David, Coach Chuck, I'm
- 25:46Speaker 19: not asking for coaching secrets, but can you talk to
- 25:49Speaker 19: me about the collaborative effort of what you all do
- 25:52Speaker 19: at halftime, because it seems like every game you guys
- 25:54Speaker 19: diagnose a problem and then come out in second half
- 25:57Speaker 19: and I know you weren't happy with the defense, but
- 25:59Speaker 19: you did lim they're running in the second half.
- 26:01Speaker 6: You can kind of talk about that process.
- 26:03Speaker 18: Yeah, I think it's it's a combination of a lot
- 26:05Speaker 18: of things. I think one, it's trying to identify how
- 26:09Speaker 18: people are attacking us, and I think having a defensive
- 26:13Speaker 18: system that's flexible enough to adapt on the run, which
- 26:17Speaker 18: I think we've always kind of been able to do.
- 26:20Speaker 18: I think it's the ability to get some information to
- 26:24Speaker 18: the players at a more calm way. You know, there
- 26:28Speaker 18: the sideline is so phrenetic during the game. It's it's
- 26:32Speaker 18: you adjust and you talk, but sometimes it doesn't always
- 26:35Speaker 18: register when you know they're calling the hogs or you
- 26:38Speaker 18: know they're going crazy, and it's just not the easiest
- 26:41Speaker 18: environment for a nineteen year old to focus on what
- 26:43Speaker 18: you're saying. And then you can get them in the
- 26:45Speaker 18: locker room and you can kind of settle them down,
- 26:47Speaker 18: and so I think some of that plays a role
- 26:49Speaker 18: in it. And then you know, obviously you try to
- 26:52Speaker 18: predict where the game's going and moving forward, and you're
- 26:56Speaker 18: able to just kind of I think we've always had
- 26:58Speaker 18: a good feel for kind of what's coming and how
- 27:00Speaker 18: to adjust to it. That certainly didn't feel like we
- 27:03Speaker 18: did a great job of that on Saturday, but I
- 27:05Speaker 18: do think over our time here, it's something we've been
- 27:07Speaker 18: very good at.
- 27:08Speaker 7: Coach to the left, fourth throw.
- 27:10Speaker 20: O, Rob Howdy coach so Bethel Roman has a breakout game,
- 27:15Speaker 20: e J Smith, huge game. Can you just talk about
- 27:19Speaker 20: how cool it is that you've got guys that maybe
- 27:22Speaker 20: don't get all the headlines that are stepping up and
- 27:25Speaker 20: making big plays to help this team win.
- 27:27Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 27:27Speaker 18: I think on a lot of levels, I think, and
- 27:30Speaker 18: I try to point it out to those guys I
- 27:32Speaker 18: pointed out in the locker room after the game, I
- 27:34Speaker 18: pointed out in the team meeting yesterday or today. Rather
- 27:38Speaker 18: when you talk about what a championship program looks like,
- 27:42Speaker 18: that's what it looks like. It looks like a bunch
- 27:44Speaker 18: of guys bought into being ready when it's time. And
- 27:48Speaker 18: like I said, on offense, this happens all the time.
- 27:51Speaker 18: Everybody wants the ball every play. I've had this conversation
- 27:54Speaker 18: with our skill kids all year. I said, you don't
- 27:55Speaker 18: have to tell me you didn't get the ball enough.
- 27:57Speaker 18: I'm all set whether you're the guy who got it
- 27:59Speaker 18: the most or you're the guy who didn't get it
- 28:01Speaker 18: at all. Like I'm all set that everybody.
- 28:03Speaker 7: Needs it more.
- 28:03Speaker 18: It's coaches need more, this, players need more. That's just
- 28:06Speaker 18: how the world works. And so I'm good. But you
- 28:09Speaker 18: know there's going to come a time where when the
- 28:11Speaker 18: game's on the line, the ball is going to come
- 28:13Speaker 18: to you, and your challenge is is you have to.
- 28:15Speaker 7: Be ready to make that play. And I don't know
- 28:17Speaker 7: when it's going to be.
- 28:18Speaker 18: I don't know how it's going to happen, but you
- 28:20Speaker 18: have to be ready to make that play because inevitably
- 28:22Speaker 18: that play might be the difference between us winning and losing,
- 28:25Speaker 18: and might be the difference between us going to the
- 28:27Speaker 18: playoffs or not. That's what football is. And so when
- 28:31Speaker 18: you think about it, you know, EJ. Smith's not having
- 28:35Speaker 18: all of the limelight he dreamed of having going into
- 28:38Speaker 18: his senior year. I'm sure, I'm sure he wishes he
- 28:40Speaker 18: was the feature back carrying the ball twenty times a game.
- 28:43Speaker 18: But here it is fourth and one at Arkansas in
- 28:46Speaker 18: our own territory and he's got to convert and that's
- 28:49Speaker 18: a championship play, and that play and that player will
- 28:52Speaker 18: have as much to do with our success as anyone,
- 28:55Speaker 18: right And it's the same thing with Ashton. We need
- 28:58Speaker 18: to play on a second and ten and we throw
- 29:00Speaker 18: fifty to fifty jump ball and he goes up and
- 29:02Speaker 18: comes down with it that ultimately leads to the touchdown
- 29:05Speaker 18: that stretches it out, that ultimately is the game winning score.
- 29:07Speaker 7: And so those things matter.
- 29:10Speaker 18: And in this world where we try to identify every
- 29:14Speaker 18: player to be selfish and every player to only be
- 29:17Speaker 18: out for himself, I think within this program right now,
- 29:20Speaker 18: we have a lot of players that are breaking that
- 29:23Speaker 18: that are showing you that they really are here for
- 29:25Speaker 18: Texas A and M. They are here for this team,
- 29:27Speaker 18: and they're going to compete and they're going to be
- 29:30Speaker 18: ready when the.
- 29:30Speaker 11: Numbers called back to the right Olan behind Yeah, okay,
- 29:37Speaker 11: royal rumble for the next question.
- 29:39Speaker 13: Uh, Mike, if I could ask too, that's a that's a.
- 29:44Speaker 7: Boss move right there, Travis that he pulled down.
- 29:45Speaker 13: You know, this year, y'all have ended some dubious streaks
- 29:52Speaker 13: for Texas A and m and I wonder if you
- 29:56Speaker 13: know how much satisfaction do you allow yourself to have
- 29:58Speaker 13: in that or do you just approa those things is
- 30:00Speaker 13: just another day of UH at the office for.
- 30:03Speaker 18: Coach, probably as another day at the office as a coach.
- 30:07Speaker 18: You know, we came here with a vision of what
- 30:10Speaker 18: this program should be. We knew in order for that
- 30:13Speaker 18: to become a reality, we were going to have to
- 30:15Speaker 18: do that. You know, the vision of this program has
- 30:18Speaker 18: not been this program's reality.
- 30:20Speaker 7: You know, We've talked about.
- 30:21Speaker 18: That since I got here that you know, we can't
- 30:25Speaker 18: just keep saying we want to be something, We're actually
- 30:27Speaker 18: at some point going to have to go out and
- 30:29Speaker 18: do it.
- 30:30Speaker 7: That was going to.
- 30:31Speaker 18: Require us winning on the road, winning SEC games on
- 30:35Speaker 18: the road, beating top ten teams like all of that
- 30:37Speaker 18: was part of why we haven't been able to chase
- 30:42Speaker 18: this elusive title that we've been searching for for so long,
- 30:45Speaker 18: or do any of those things. And so, yeah, I
- 30:48Speaker 18: don't know that I find tremendous joy. It's just it's
- 30:51Speaker 18: good to see the program continuing to move in the
- 30:53Speaker 18: right direction.
- 30:54Speaker 7: I think that's how I take all of that.
- 30:57Speaker 13: I hope this is a really too stupid of a question,
- 30:59Speaker 13: but I want if there's.
- 31:00Speaker 7: Always a good preface.
- 31:01Speaker 13: Yeah, I wonder if there's any because only because y'all won,
- 31:06Speaker 13: is there any silver lining and that with the defensive
- 31:10Speaker 13: performance that you know you can have this this visual
- 31:17Speaker 13: aid if for lack of better ask better way to
- 31:21Speaker 13: put it to show your guys you know what they
- 31:23Speaker 13: have to do, you know, to be effective defensively the
- 31:26Speaker 13: rest of the of the.
- 31:26Speaker 7: Year, I hope.
- 31:29Speaker 18: So it is probably the right answer to that. Obviously,
- 31:32Speaker 18: this silver lining is is much bigger than a silver lining.
- 31:35Speaker 18: We won the football game. We won't win very many
- 31:38Speaker 18: games playing football and defense like that.
- 31:41Speaker 7: I know that. I think our players know that I was.
- 31:45Speaker 7: I was talking to one of.
- 31:45Speaker 18: Them today though, like I feel like this generation sometimes
- 31:48Speaker 18: has to get burned on the stove over and over
- 31:50Speaker 18: and over again before they stop putting their hand on it.
- 31:54Speaker 18: That was kind of how I talked to them today.
- 31:57Speaker 18: You know, can we can we please like make the
- 32:01Speaker 18: corrections and make the adjustments before we don't get the
- 32:04Speaker 18: silver lighting to adjust with, and so hopefully that creates
- 32:08Speaker 18: some urgency. Obviously, this this game and this opponent should
- 32:12Speaker 18: create a lot of urgency.
- 32:14Speaker 7: But it is certainly concerning.
- 32:17Speaker 18: It's concerning that that we would do that on a
- 32:20Speaker 18: Saturday with everything at stake the way it was, and
- 32:22Speaker 18: so hopefully, hopefully it's a lesson learned.
- 32:27Speaker 21: To the left, alex A and M's had a tough
- 32:30Speaker 21: time beating LSU on the road since they've been in
- 32:33Speaker 21: the SEC.
- 32:33Speaker 7: I'm just curious by tough time, you mean we've never
- 32:36Speaker 7: done it.
- 32:37Speaker 21: Yeah, to that point, Ye, from your experience, what makes
- 32:42Speaker 21: it so challenging to play at Tiger Stadium?
- 32:46Speaker 7: You know, I think for a large period of time,
- 32:49Speaker 7: we weren't you know, we didn't go down.
- 32:52Speaker 18: There physically and stand up to the challenge. I think
- 32:56Speaker 18: when you when you saw some of the early games, uh,
- 32:59Speaker 18: I think that was kind of always the like, Okay,
- 33:01Speaker 18: this is what the SEC looks like. I think as
- 33:04Speaker 18: our program grew, we started to get closer and closer.
- 33:08Speaker 18: Obviously that twenty my first experience was going down there
- 33:11Speaker 18: and playing the twenty nineteen team. That wasn't a lot
- 33:13Speaker 18: of fun, but that was historically one of the best
- 33:15Speaker 18: teams in college football. I think when we went down
- 33:18Speaker 18: there in twenty one, it was obviously a much more
- 33:21Speaker 18: competitive game from a physical standpoint, and I think that's
- 33:26Speaker 18: the gap that we've tried to close as a program.
- 33:28Speaker 18: And so obviously, you know, the series has been very
- 33:32Speaker 18: balanced since I've been here in twenty eighteen. You know
- 33:36Speaker 18: someone's going to crack through at some point on the road,
- 33:38Speaker 18: and you know Saturday is an opportunity for us to
- 33:40Speaker 18: be the team that does it.
- 33:42Speaker 21: And then there's multiple national reports out that you're a
- 33:45Speaker 21: possible candidate for the Penn State job. I'm just curious
- 33:49Speaker 21: your thoughts on that, how you handle your name being
- 33:51Speaker 21: linked to that kind of job, and if that's something
- 33:53Speaker 21: you've been discussed with your players.
- 33:55Speaker 7: I don't discuss it with my players.
- 33:56Speaker 18: I think it's absolutely hilarious how you guys cut for coaches.
- 34:01Speaker 18: I think three weeks ago I was getting fired. Now
- 34:04Speaker 18: I'm getting hired. Now I got that you don't want
- 34:07Speaker 18: me to stay, But I'm lea like, It's just it's
- 34:09Speaker 18: absolutely hilarious. It is a waste of brain space to
- 34:12Speaker 18: spend any time talking or thinking about any of that stupidity.
- 34:16Speaker 7: Now we'll go to Travis in the front. Uh.
- 34:19Speaker 8: Thinking back on Ashton Bethel Romans recruitment, seems like he
- 34:22Speaker 8: could have got and pulled a lot of places. What
- 34:23Speaker 8: do you remember about that and being able to in
- 34:26Speaker 8: Kim here.
- 34:27Speaker 18: Yeah, I remember watching his tape when we got hired
- 34:29Speaker 18: before he signed with Arkansas, thinking he was a really
- 34:33Speaker 18: talented player, and I wish we had recruited him, And
- 34:36Speaker 18: so we did everything we could in the final hours
- 34:38Speaker 18: to try to get him to flip to us, and
- 34:41Speaker 18: you know, I just couldn't get him over the hump.
- 34:43Speaker 7: The relationship was too short. You know, we didn't know him.
- 34:45Speaker 18: I was at Duke, you know, Coach Wigans wasn't even
- 34:48Speaker 18: here yet, so we didn't have a wide receiver coach
- 34:50Speaker 18: and coach Klein didn't really know him, and so it
- 34:52Speaker 18: just was it was such a challenge to try to
- 34:54Speaker 18: get it done in such a short period of time.
- 34:56Speaker 18: And so he wound up signing with Arkansas and and
- 35:00Speaker 18: I guess for whatever reason while he was there, it
- 35:03Speaker 18: didn't work the way he had hoped it would, and
- 35:05Speaker 18: so he.
- 35:05Speaker 7: Wound up here.
- 35:13Speaker 5: Friday's Fearless Football Forecast challenge And yes, I get imposter syndrome, saying.

- 39:18Speaker 5: I have mini playlists for this show.
- 39:22Speaker 4: Chip Howard Sports Talk Minus Chip Howard, I'm Dusty. We're
- 39:25Speaker 4: joined by Caleb. Coming up an hour number two, the
- 39:29Speaker 4: inmates take over the Asylum and the writers, Rusty and Cease,
- 39:33Speaker 4: will take over the show and take it where they
- 39:35Speaker 4: wanted to go. We'll just figure it out. I mean,
- 39:38Speaker 4: it could be all Pittsburgh Pirates for all we know.
- 39:40Speaker 4: That would be interesting, and Rangers, you know, I don't.
- 39:42Speaker 5: Think so, but I don't think they want to talk
- 39:45Speaker 5: about the Rangers right now, or.
- 39:46Speaker 6: The Pirates or the Pirates.
- 39:48Speaker 4: So you know, we'll just go where the writers want
- 39:51Speaker 4: to go. Next hour, but this hour, I want to
- 39:53Speaker 4: go back to. Mike Elko was asked this week. I
- 39:57Speaker 4: was surprised he wasn't asked last week about the Penn
- 39:59Speaker 4: State job, as his name's kind of been linked to it,
- 40:03Speaker 4: and I like this response. First of all, ignored the
- 40:07Speaker 4: question as to whether or not he was linked to it.
- 40:10Speaker 4: He just said it's stupid to even talk about and
- 40:14Speaker 4: he let everybody know that you can ask me, and
- 40:17Speaker 4: I'm going to keep not answering, and that's fine. I
- 40:19Speaker 4: would rather coach not answer than lie. Okay, Now, do
- 40:25Speaker 4: I think Mike Oco is leaving A and M to
- 40:28Speaker 4: take the Penn State job. No, because there are two
- 40:32Speaker 4: options looking forward right. Option number one is this team
- 40:38Speaker 4: collapses and doesn't make the playoff after starting seven to
- 40:41Speaker 4: zero and now Penn State's no longer interested. Okay. Option
- 40:46Speaker 4: number two is, this team doesn't collapse, does make the playoffs,
- 40:51Speaker 4: and they can't wait. Penn State cannot wait to take
- 40:57Speaker 4: a coach in the playoffs. It is too late. You've
- 41:01Speaker 4: got high school signing day, You've got a portal window
- 41:05Speaker 4: window coming up. You can't wait and watch all your
- 41:07Speaker 4: players leave and have no one ready in the wings.
- 41:12Speaker 4: I don't think they can wait for any coach that's
- 41:14Speaker 4: in the playoffs this year. And I don't see any
- 41:16Speaker 4: coach in the playoffs leaving their team before the playoffs
- 41:22Speaker 4: to go take the Penn State job. So for all
- 41:28Speaker 4: these people that have fired their coaches early, I don't
- 41:31Speaker 4: think they can hire a coach from the playoffs. And
- 41:35Speaker 4: even if they go get a coordinator from the playoffs.
- 41:40Speaker 4: I think it's going to be difficult, a difficult job
- 41:43Speaker 4: for that coach to leave the team that he led
- 41:45Speaker 4: to the playoffs to say I want to go take
- 41:48Speaker 4: this job. But a coordinator to a head coach at
- 41:50Speaker 4: a Penn State I can see that happening, right. Lane
- 41:54Speaker 4: Kiffin left Alabama during the playoffs to go take a
- 41:57Speaker 4: head coach job, and I'm not sure if he necessarily
- 42:00Speaker 4: he wanted to, but he took the job in Nick
- 42:01Speaker 4: Saven told him to get out. Yeah, you know, I
- 42:04Speaker 4: can't have your head in two places. We'll move on
- 42:07Speaker 4: without you. As deep as these coaching staffs are right now,
- 42:13Speaker 4: with the number of coaches on staff, I would assume
- 42:16Speaker 4: that a coordinator could move on and a team could
- 42:19Speaker 4: continue to have some continuity. The hot name over the
- 42:22Speaker 4: weekend for the Penn State job actually was.
- 42:26Speaker 6: Matt Rule Right.
- 42:27Speaker 4: No, No, the coordinator from LSU in twenty nineteen. About
- 42:32Speaker 4: to say Joe Burrow, but that's not right, Joe Burrowing.
- 42:34Speaker 4: Joe Brady really moving from the Bills, okay, back into
- 42:39Speaker 4: college and taking over Penn State. So something to keep
- 42:42Speaker 4: an eye on. You know, there will continue to be rumors,
- 42:46Speaker 4: but Penn State needs to get a guy who is
- 42:51Speaker 4: available to hit the ground running as soon as the
- 42:53Speaker 4: season's over. So I believe Sporting News was the one
- 42:58Speaker 4: that had the article on Joe bur already taking the
- 43:01Speaker 4: Pens being at the top of the list for the
- 43:03Speaker 4: Penn State job.
- 43:04Speaker 5: What about Kenny Dillingham, that'd be that'd be fun. I'm
- 43:09Speaker 5: just I got a Nitney Lions sports website pulled up
- 43:12Speaker 5: and they got Kenny Dillingham on there, and that would
- 43:14Speaker 5: be amazing.
- 43:15Speaker 4: Okay, so there are choices now, all that being said,
- 43:20Speaker 4: is Mike Elko going to get paid off of this deal.
- 43:23Speaker 4: Mike Elko was gonna get paid whether if he took
- 43:25Speaker 4: this team to the playoffs, no matter what, is A
- 43:28Speaker 4: and M going to have the pony up and give
- 43:30Speaker 4: a contract that's going to make some people grumble like
- 43:34Speaker 4: Indiana did for their head coach. If ain't it makes
- 43:39Speaker 4: the playoff if Am, If Adam wins this weekend, they're
- 43:43Speaker 4: basically in the playoff right regard.
- 43:45Speaker 5: You underestimate the capability of the Jaggies to go eating.
- 43:49Speaker 4: For I understand that. But if they win this weekend
- 43:52Speaker 4: or eight and two with Sanford, UH South Carolina, who's
- 43:55Speaker 4: scuffling at home. Yeah, uh, it's it's not a stretch
- 43:59Speaker 4: to get the tenant to Missouri or Texas is not
- 44:02Speaker 4: world beaters. Even if they don't win this week, in
- 44:05Speaker 4: the likelihood of them making the playoff, it's still more
- 44:08Speaker 4: likely than.
- 44:08Speaker 5: Not, right because they're still undefeated. It still only have
- 44:11Speaker 5: one loss in the sec.
- 44:12Speaker 4: So the reality of today's world is Mike alco is
- 44:15Speaker 4: going to get.
- 44:16Speaker 6: Paid to stay here most likely.
- 44:18Speaker 4: Yeah, if he does want to leave, there's nothing you
- 44:22Speaker 4: could do to stop that. The only thing that would
- 44:25Speaker 4: be upsetting if you're an A and M fan is
- 44:27Speaker 4: if you let him walk out the door without offering
- 44:30Speaker 4: without you know, trying to keep it together and offering
- 44:32Speaker 4: him money. And I don't see that. That's the situation. Florida,
- 44:36Speaker 4: on the other hand, yesterday, after a win over Mississippi State,
- 44:41Speaker 4: went ahead and let Napier go. Scott Strickland there, their
- 44:48Speaker 4: athletic director said, we just didn't win at the level
- 44:52Speaker 4: we needed to, which is obvious. Three and four start
- 44:55Speaker 4: this year, bad, bad year. Last year just hasn't been good.
- 44:59Speaker 4: Floridable old one million dollars, which Trickland says is not insignificant,
- 45:05Speaker 4: but he goes on to say, we have tremendous resources,
- 45:07Speaker 4: but it's not unlimited. We'll have to manage that. The
- 45:11Speaker 4: resources are not going to be the reason we don't
- 45:14Speaker 4: make the right decision going forward here. So Florida will
- 45:18Speaker 4: be opening the pocketbooks. That's another job that's gonna help
- 45:21Speaker 4: Mike Elico get more money. Not opening the pocketbooks. Oh,
- 45:26Speaker 4: do we need to get away for a breakown?
- 45:27Speaker 5: Well, I just wanted to mention that Lane Kiffen is
- 45:29Speaker 5: the betting favorite for the Florida job right now.
- 45:31Speaker 4: Well, that's I agree, he's the betting favorite. It makes
- 45:35Speaker 4: complete sense I throughout Saturday that if I'm Florida, I'm
- 45:40Speaker 4: looking at James Franklin as well.
- 45:42Speaker 6: He's third on the list.
- 45:43Speaker 4: So Florida will open their pocket books. Florida has a
- 45:48Speaker 4: national championship history, and you can't call me while I'm
- 45:55Speaker 4: on the air bill, so call you in a minute.
- 46:00Speaker 4: But Florida State, on the other hand, put out a
- 46:04Speaker 4: statement that we rightfully have high expectations and everything we
- 46:08Speaker 4: do to represent Florida State in the manner that we
- 46:11Speaker 4: built our reputation as one of college football's best program,
- 46:15Speaker 4: we'll embrace those expectations and also sharing deep disappointment when
- 46:20Speaker 4: results on the fields are short of the standard. As
- 46:23Speaker 4: we continue to move forward this season, our comprehensive assessment
- 46:27Speaker 4: of the football program will be completed at the end
- 46:29Speaker 4: of the season. Skip the rest of what he said,
- 46:33Speaker 4: move on to this and understand that Florida State simply
- 46:37Speaker 4: doesn't have the money. If Florida State weren't to move
- 46:39Speaker 4: away from Norvelle this year, the seminals would owen fifty
- 46:43Speaker 4: four million dollar buyout. All told, including staff salaries, Florida
- 46:49Speaker 4: State would have to pay seventy two million dollars for
- 46:53Speaker 4: the buyouts of Norvelle and his staff. I read that statement,
- 46:57Speaker 4: and when they don't have the money to do it,
- 47:00Speaker 4: you've got to decide are we going to pay coaches
- 47:02Speaker 4: who don't work here or players?
- 47:05Speaker 6: That's a good point.
- 47:06Speaker 4: Will it will? It will? It be changes at Florida
- 47:09Speaker 4: State that they'll force his hand on, but they're going
- 47:11Speaker 4: to keep him because they don't have the seventy four
- 47:14Speaker 4: million dollars to buy him and his staff out this year.
- 47:18Speaker 5: The funniest thing about this situation for me is that
- 47:20Speaker 5: they are opening a new football facilities this week, so.
- 47:25Speaker 4: In a smaller stadium than they had to actually reduce
- 47:27Speaker 4: their seating capacity.
- 47:28Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 47:29Speaker 5: Well, it's just going to the symbolism of Norvel being
- 47:31Speaker 5: the one, you know, ceremoniously cutting the ribbing and all
- 47:34Speaker 5: that just really funny. If they fire him like the
- 47:37Speaker 5: week after that.
- 47:38Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 47:39Speaker 5: So if he if he's in all those pictures, he
- 47:41Speaker 5: probably is going to stay around for rest of the year.
- 47:43Speaker 4: I think he is going to stay around. And there
- 47:45Speaker 4: are seventy two million reasons why. Yep, on the same
- 47:49Speaker 4: boat real quick. Wisconsin has thrown their support behind Luke Fickle,
- 47:55Speaker 4: and not only are they gonna keep him around, they're
- 47:59Speaker 4: asking for more support, more financial support for the program.
- 48:02Speaker 4: So you can read that any way you want. First
- 48:05Speaker 4: of all, Fickles saying, hey, I don't have enough players
- 48:07Speaker 4: when it comes to nil. And second of all, they
- 48:10Speaker 4: don't have the money to buy him out. We are
- 48:14Speaker 4: late for a break. Your listen to Chip Howard Sportstock

- 48:52Speaker 25: The Houston Texans are ready to head up to Seattle
- 48:55Speaker 25: and face the Seahawks for Monday Night football. The Texans
- 48:58Speaker 25: have made big strides offensively as of late, and that
- 49:00Speaker 25: adds on to an impressive defense that's been lasting since
- 49:03Speaker 25: the start of season. Seattle will be challenging, however, with
- 49:06Speaker 25: their ability to create explosive plays with quarterback cm Donald
- 49:10Speaker 25: rinking third in the league for passing yards. Here's what
- 49:12Speaker 25: head coach Tamik O'Ryan said Thursday on what it makes
- 49:15Speaker 25: Donald in the Seattle offense so effective?
- 49:17Speaker 26: A very explosive offense, one and foremost because he's able
- 49:21Speaker 26: to deliver the football at all three levels of the
- 49:24Speaker 26: football field right does a really nice job of throwing
- 49:26Speaker 26: the ball deep JSN and a really nice job making
- 49:29Speaker 26: plays on the football as well, and they protect it
- 49:32Speaker 26: will So he's done a good job of spreading the
- 49:35Speaker 26: ball around, making good decisions with the football, and that's
- 49:37Speaker 26: why he's been having a really good year.
- 49:39Speaker 25: The Texans all time record on Monday nights is six

- 51:50Speaker 4: this Hour, Rusty and Cease coming up next hour and
- 51:55Speaker 4: on Saturday Breakout Game four. Freshman receiver Ashton Bethel Roman,
- 52:00Speaker 4: who originally UH signed with Arkansas, got released from his
- 52:04Speaker 4: letter of intent and then signed with A and M
- 52:07Speaker 4: and showed up here. Red shirted last year, got to
- 52:11Speaker 4: play this year, had a great game, including a touchdown
- 52:14Speaker 4: at Arkansas, And here was astral Beth and Bethel Roman
- 52:18Speaker 4: after the game.
- 52:19Speaker 6: Why did why did you just start with the big
- 52:21Speaker 6: play walks.
- 52:22Speaker 7: Through the touchdown?
- 52:23Speaker 28: Man new all week they were playing inside leverage. UH,
- 52:28Speaker 28: and me and Marcelle was just connected all week. So
- 52:31Speaker 28: UH just just took what I did from practicing applied
- 52:33Speaker 28: to the game and it worked out.
- 52:35Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 52:35Speaker 29: And then how about the one down the sideline that
- 52:37Speaker 29: that wasn't a touchdown but extended the drive.
- 52:41Speaker 28: That's that's like coach Wiggins philosophy, attacking the ball. Uh,
- 52:44Speaker 28: we're in the SEC, so we gotta be big, make
- 52:46Speaker 28: big time.
- 52:46Speaker 7: Players.
- 52:47Speaker 30: The receiver contested catches in the SEC.
- 52:49Speaker 28: So that's how that was just applying again, applying what
- 52:52Speaker 28: I learned from practicing using it to the game and
- 52:54Speaker 28: attacking the ball.
- 52:55Speaker 31: What was it like playing here, having once you know,
- 52:57Speaker 31: been signed to player?
- 52:59Speaker 28: It felt it felt good cause uh I I've I've
- 53:02Speaker 28: been I've been here so many times as a recruit,
- 53:04Speaker 28: then I signed here and then uh I didn't end
- 53:07Speaker 28: up coming, but you know I felt good playing, Uh,
- 53:09Speaker 28: especially playing the guys uh at Arkansas. A lot of
- 53:12Speaker 28: those are my guys, so it felt good.
- 53:14Speaker 31: Uh it was a game where you had a big game.
- 53:16Speaker 8: You know, EJ had some some big plays. What is
- 53:18Speaker 8: it a little interest cut for when guys who haven't
- 53:20Speaker 8: had a a chance to to show HI themselves yet
- 53:22Speaker 8: or we're a big.
- 53:23Speaker 14: Part of the win.
- 53:24Speaker 28: Uh yeah, I mean yeah, it feels great cause I
- 53:26Speaker 28: mean everyone in everyone in that locker room over there
- 53:29Speaker 28: can do like anything like we that's we're That's what
- 53:32Speaker 28: we came here to do, is just play football at
- 53:34Speaker 28: a high level.
- 53:34Speaker 30: So uh, at first you.
- 53:36Speaker 28: Could get a little frustrating, but it's part of the
- 53:37Speaker 28: game were it's a team sport. So when our numbers
- 53:39Speaker 28: called we just we just uh, we just play up
- 53:42Speaker 28: to our standard and that's all it was.
- 53:44Speaker 7: What does it?
- 53:45Speaker 8: Uh?
- 53:45Speaker 14: Uh?
- 53:46Speaker 8: What what makes EJ such a good kind of closer back?
- 53:49Speaker 30: He just run hard. He don't care. That's that's the
- 53:51Speaker 30: thing about it.
- 53:51Speaker 28: He just run hard like it's he don't care about
- 53:53Speaker 28: what happens to him, how beat up he is and things.
- 53:55Speaker 30: Then he just run hard.
- 53:57Speaker 31: Two grew up games. You guys have had too good
- 53:58Speaker 31: offensive performances?
- 53:59Speaker 18: What is it about this unit that allows y'all to
- 54:02Speaker 18: excel in in hostile environments like this?
- 54:04Speaker 28: Just start togetherness that we have though, like uh coach
- 54:06Speaker 28: Elko he always talks about.
- 54:07Speaker 30: It art togetherness, that that.
- 54:09Speaker 28: Family bond that we have that we know if if
- 54:12Speaker 28: someone falls short, whether it's on the offense or defense,
- 54:14Speaker 28: we gonna pick 'em back.
- 54:15Speaker 30: Uh A static together So we can't.
- 54:16Speaker 6: Which studium environment was more difficult.
- 54:18Speaker 7: Notre Dame or Arkansas's time?
- 54:20Speaker 30: Or excuse me?
- 54:21Speaker 11: Which, uh which stadium environment was harder to play in
- 54:25Speaker 11: Arkansas or Notre Dame.
- 54:28Speaker 28: Uh, I'd probably say, I mean they're about what and
- 54:30Speaker 28: what I I Arkansas kind of snuck up on us
- 54:33Speaker 28: cause that first knowne was in the stadium and we
- 54:35Speaker 28: went back out and it was kind of full.
- 54:36Speaker 30: But uh, Notre Dame was a hostile environment.
- 54:39Speaker 28: It's just actually I say Arkansas cause Arkansas's fans they
- 54:42Speaker 28: talk a lot of men, So yeah, I say Arkansas.
- 54:44Speaker 30: Yeah, Arkansas.
- 54:45Speaker 29: You guys scored on your first four possessions of the
- 54:47Speaker 29: second half to keep Arkansas from having a chance to
- 54:50Speaker 29: take the lead.
- 54:51Speaker 31: Just what'd you see from the offense and that kind
- 54:53Speaker 31: of consistency of it and.
- 54:55Speaker 28: That uh Coach Elger explains it as like just helping
- 54:59Speaker 28: each other out on the side of the ball. Even
- 55:01Speaker 28: if the like the defense could fall short, we help
- 55:03Speaker 28: We helped him out as the offense and vice versa.
- 55:06Speaker 30: So that's all. It was just making sure we took
- 55:08Speaker 30: care of our part of the our part of the game.
- 55:10Speaker 13: Actually, anyway, when did you luh, when were you able
- 55:13Speaker 13: to finally relax that way we got this?
- 55:16Speaker 14: Uh hm.
- 55:20Speaker 28: Probably uh when EJ got like we went fourth on
- 55:24Speaker 28: fourth down and e J got hit in the backfield
- 55:26Speaker 28: and he kept running.
- 55:27Speaker 30: Frost was like, yeah, yeah, we good.
- 55:29Speaker 31: What'd you think of Marcel's game tonight?
- 55:31Speaker 30: Uh huh, you played a good game. He played a
- 55:33Speaker 30: great game.
- 55:34Speaker 28: Uh uh, less mors, So what's the missopen receiver? So
- 55:38Speaker 28: we play He played a great game. Actually, he played
- 55:40Speaker 28: a great game.
- 55:41Speaker 31: Were you on the field on that worked out conversion
- 55:43Speaker 31: of the gout?
- 55:44Speaker 8: Uh uh?
- 55:44Speaker 30: It was a whole bunch of big guys. I ain't
- 55:46Speaker 30: on no one.
- 55:47Speaker 14: What you know?
- 55:48Speaker 18: W what?
- 55:49Speaker 31: What was kind of going through your mind? Cause that
- 55:51Speaker 31: that was a critical part point in the game.
- 55:52Speaker 28: Then I was going through my mind was please get
- 55:55Speaker 28: this first day. I'm trying to get back on the field.
- 55:58Speaker 28: And if he didn't get that first down when they
- 55:59Speaker 28: had that big catch on the sideline, so really shout
- 56:02Speaker 28: out EJ.
- 56:03Speaker 1: Anything else?
- 56:05Speaker 27: When you saw him hit the the a lot bit
- 56:08Speaker 27: of the butt kind of go backwards, you go, oh
- 56:10Speaker 27: God or do ye?
- 56:12Speaker 28: I was think I was thinking words that I probably
- 56:13Speaker 28: should say, cause I was very frustrated.
- 56:16Speaker 30: But then when I seen him fall forward, I was like, yeah,
- 56:18Speaker 30: e J's great.
- 56:19Speaker 29: Yeah, what do you feel like you've learned the most
- 56:21Speaker 29: about your team these last three four weeks in particular,
- 56:24Speaker 29: that's let to a seven.
- 56:25Speaker 12: In the start?
- 56:27Speaker 30: We got dogs, like we got dogs everywhere, whether the.
- 56:31Speaker 28: Whether people outside of our team one ad minute or now,
- 56:34Speaker 28: we got dogs and like we just gonna keep showing
- 56:36Speaker 28: the world that what we got is dogs.
- 56:38Speaker 30: So that's all it is.
- 56:39Speaker 31: What does it mean to be seven to no for
- 56:40Speaker 31: the first time since nineteen ninety Moore?
- 56:43Speaker 30: Uh, I don't know. I mean it's for me.
- 56:46Speaker 28: It's just like I feel like for a lot of
- 56:48Speaker 28: people and there, it's just we just playing football doing
- 56:50Speaker 28: what we love at a high level. So we don't
- 56:52Speaker 28: really care too much about the work. I mean it's cool,
- 56:55Speaker 28: but we we we we worried about the next week.
- 56:57Speaker 31: What's it gonna be like, gonna play it LSU next
