- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14In our current series, Fruitful Work, we're asking
- 0:16the question, what kind of fruit am I
- 0:19bearing at work?
- 0:20Because we often don't bear the kind of
- 0:22fruit that we wish we would, but by
- 0:24God's grace, by the power of the Holy
- 0:25Spirit, we can learn to bear good fruit.
- 0:28And we're working backwards through Paul the Apostle's
- 0:31list of parts of the fruit of the
- 0:33fruit in Galatians chapter 5, so we've already
- 0:35done self-control the last part of the
- 0:37list.
- 0:37Last time, we did gentleness, and now, one
- 0:40step backwards, faithfulness.
- 0:46So to talk about faithfulness, I want to
- 0:48share a story.
- 0:49My wife and I host a monthly game
- 0:50night, and sometimes we do party games if
- 0:52there's enough people there.
- 0:53We recently did this with a game called
- 0:55Wavelength, which is all about getting on the
- 0:57same wavelength as your team members, trying to
- 0:59guess the way that they would guess something.
- 1:01And it's about opposing opposites and then trying
- 1:04to guess a certain point in the middle
- 1:06between them.
- 1:06So the two opposites that were suggested by
- 1:09the card was stable versus unstable.
- 1:13And then I had to get them to
- 1:14guess stable.
- 1:15It was like all the way on the
- 1:17stable side, so I was like, what is
- 1:18the most extremely stable thing I can think
- 1:22of?
- 1:22And the first thought that popped into my
- 1:24mind was, my dad.
- 1:26Why did my dad's name pop into my
- 1:28mind?
- 1:28Because my dad is Mr. Stability.
- 1:32He is the person that you can count
- 1:34on in any situation, and I love that
- 1:37about my dad.
- 1:38This comes out in his personality in so
- 1:40many different ways in terms of taking care
- 1:42of the house.
- 1:43He not only takes care of his own
- 1:44house, he takes care of my house, too,
- 1:46even though he lives two and a half
- 1:48hours away.
- 1:48He'll come down and work on my house
- 1:50in the summer and be like, Chris, this
- 1:51is something you should know.
- 1:52Let me teach you, because I didn't learn
- 1:54that stuff when I was a teenager.
- 1:56My dad takes care of people.
- 1:58So when I was a little kid and
- 2:00my brother was a little kid, we would
- 2:01have like family Bible time every night.
- 2:04And dad was super consistent about it, where
- 2:06he would sit down with us and read
- 2:07to us from this beautiful picture Bible with
- 2:09illustrations by Russ Flint.
- 2:11If you've never looked it up, please do.
- 2:13It's called my very first Bible and the
- 2:15illustrations by Russ Flint are just breathtaking.
- 2:18And, you know, it was time with the
- 2:19Bible, but it was also just time with
- 2:20dad.
- 2:21I knew every night I was going to
- 2:23get time with dad.
- 2:25It was consistent.
- 2:27My dad and my mom together with him
- 2:28were like this in their approach to church.
- 2:30So a couple of years before I was
- 2:31born, they started attending a new church and
- 2:34they just stuck it out at that church,
- 2:35even though that church went through a bunch
- 2:37of drama and some church splits in the
- 2:3990s and all sorts of difficult things.
- 2:41They said, we're sticking around.
- 2:43We're sticking it out.
- 2:44We're going to be present here.
- 2:45The gospel is still present here.
- 2:46We can be faithful here.
- 2:48And that's what they did.
- 2:49And because of that, I had the experience
- 2:51of attending the same church, my entire growing
- 2:53up experience all the way until I was
- 2:55in college and afterwards, which was not true
- 2:58for most of my friends.
- 2:59A lot of my friends, their families would
- 3:00keep switching from one church to another, and
- 3:02they didn't get that same depth of pastoral
- 3:04care or friendship because of that transience.
- 3:08And sometimes there are valid reasons to leave
- 3:09a church.
- 3:10So I don't see that as a critique
- 3:11of the need to leave at times.
- 3:13But just as an another example of the
- 3:16way that my dad was stable and that
- 3:19idea of stability, of consistency, of reliability is
- 3:23really exactly what is at the heart of
- 3:27faithfulness.
- 3:29The word faithfulness in this passage is sometimes
- 3:32just translated faith.
- 3:35And it connects with a word for faith
- 3:36in the Hebrew scriptures as well.
- 3:39So earlier in Galatians, Paul cites a verse
- 3:41from Habakkuk that says, the righteous will live
- 3:44by faith.
- 3:45And that Hebrew word is emunah.
- 3:48And it literally just means sturdiness.
- 3:50So if you've ever tripped and had to
- 3:51like study yourself against the wall, like to
- 3:54keep yourself from falling over, that wall had
- 3:57emunah.
- 3:58It had sturdiness.
- 3:59You weren't afraid that the wall was going
- 4:00to fall over.
- 4:01You were going to fall over, but then
- 4:02the wall was sturdy.
- 4:03So it kept you upright.
- 4:06And it's used metaphorically in the Hebrew scriptures
- 4:08to give that sense of firmness, steadiness of
- 4:11conviction, loyalty, somebody that you can really count
- 4:15on.
- 4:17And that's exactly the idea that Paul is
- 4:19drawing on as he translates or excuse me,
- 4:22as he lists in Greek, this word faith
- 4:26or faithfulness.
- 4:27Is he saying, and when we are bearing
- 4:30the fruit of the spirit, we should be
- 4:31people that others can count on.
- 4:35We should be stable.
- 4:36We should be steadfast.
- 4:38We can bear the fruit of faithfulness.
- 4:41Now, there's a couple ideas here also in
- 4:44the Hebrew scriptures that can be really helpful
- 4:46when the word faithfulness is used.
- 4:49It's often used in connection with the idea
- 4:52of covenant.
- 4:53That's true in both the Hebrew scriptures and
- 4:55in the New Testament.
- 4:57And so in order to kind of unpack
- 4:58this idea of faithfulness, I want to go
- 5:00to one of the key covenant passages from
- 5:03the Hebrew scriptures, something that can kind of
- 5:05help us connect with this idea of covenant
- 5:07is the idea of marriage.
- 5:10Even though marriage has kind of been degraded
- 5:12in our culture to a temporary thing where
- 5:14many people are married to multiple people in
- 5:16succession, we still have that idea that while
- 5:19you're married to someone, you should be faithful
- 5:21to them.
- 5:22And there's language about this in the wedding
- 5:25vows.
- 5:25And the kind of older language of the
- 5:27wedding vows would include a phrase like, there
- 5:29too, I pledge thee my faith or an
- 5:32even older version.
- 5:33There too, I pledge thee my trough.
- 5:35And so again, that word faith, connecting with
- 5:37the idea of faithfulness or trough being from
- 5:40the same root word in English as truth,
- 5:43that you're going to be true to someone,
- 5:46you're going to be true to your spouse.
- 5:48And that obviously includes sexual fidelity, but so
- 5:50much more showing up in the relationship, doing
- 5:53daily life together, being true as that covenant
- 5:56partner for them.
- 5:58And of course, as disciples of Jesus, bearing
- 6:00in mind his teaching on marriage, the best
- 6:03vision of that is a lifelong covenant.
- 6:05It's something stable, something steadfast that endures, that
- 6:09goes through the storms together and still lasts.
- 6:13So that's kind of the closest analog that
- 6:15many of us have experienced to this idea
- 6:17of covenant that we find in scripture.
- 6:20But covenant was not just about marriage in
- 6:23the Bible.
- 6:24It's also about God's relationship with his covenant
- 6:27people, the people of Israel, the descendants of
- 6:30Abraham.
- 6:30And again, that's part of the background of
- 6:33the entire letter to the Galatians that Paul
- 6:34is working with, is what does it mean
- 6:36for us to be members of the covenant,
- 6:38since we're now followers of Jesus, the Messiah.
- 6:41But one of the key moments in this
- 6:43covenant with the people of Israel comes in
- 6:45Exodus chapter 34.
- 6:47And this is when God is giving the
- 6:49Torah to Moses and symbolically giving it in
- 6:53the form of the Ten Commandments.
- 6:55And if you're a real Bible nerd, you
- 6:57may remember that happened twice.
- 6:58This is the second time, the one that,
- 7:00again, lasts, that endures, the tablets that end
- 7:03up in the Ark of the Covenant.
- 7:05And before God gives these tablets, the symbol
- 7:09of the Torah, the symbol of his covenant
- 7:11with his people, he gives something else.
- 7:15He gives them his name.
- 7:17He does this in front of Moses.
- 7:20So let me read starting in verse 34.
- 7:22So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like
- 7:25the first ones and went up Mount Sinai
- 7:27early in the morning as the Lord had
- 7:29commanded him.
- 7:30And he carried the two stone tablets in
- 7:32his hands.
- 7:33Then the Lord came down in the cloud
- 7:35and stood there with him and proclaimed his
- 7:38name, the Lord.
- 7:40And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming,
- 7:43the Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious
- 7:47God, slow to anger, abounding in love and
- 7:51faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands and forgiving wickedness,
- 7:56rebellion and sin.
- 7:58Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished.
- 8:00He punishes the children and their children for
- 8:02the son of the fathers to the third
- 8:03and fourth generation.
- 8:06Moses bowed to the ground at once and
- 8:08worshiped, oh Lord, if I have found favor
- 8:10in your eyes, he said, then let the
- 8:12Lord go with us.
- 8:13Although this is a stiff-necked people, forgive
- 8:15our wickedness and our sin and take us
- 8:17as your inheritance.
- 8:19Then the Lord said, I am making a
- 8:21covenant with you before all your people, I
- 8:24will do wonders never before done in any
- 8:27nation in all the world.
- 8:30This is a key passage about the character
- 8:33of God.
- 8:35As you may know, when God says his
- 8:36name, he's not just giving people a label,
- 8:39a way to refer to them, he's giving
- 8:41them a summary of his whole character, his
- 8:44whole heart.
- 8:45Just like Jesus gave that summary of his
- 8:47heart as gentle and lowly, God gives a
- 8:50summary here of his heart as compassionate, gracious,
- 8:56slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness,
- 9:00maintaining love to thousands.
- 9:05So again, very similar language to what we
- 9:07would associate with that lifelong marriage covenant.
- 9:10God is saying, I will be true to
- 9:13you.
- 9:14I will be steadfast.
- 9:16I will continue my love for a thousand
- 9:19generations of your children and your children's children.
- 9:24Just a side note here because it does
- 9:26have that thing about punishing children for the
- 9:28sins of the fathers, which might raise a
- 9:30kind of red flag.
- 9:32I think what we see there is God
- 9:34speaking of the reality of the consequences of
- 9:36sin that when there's a pattern of sin
- 9:38in a family or in a community, the
- 9:42sins of fathers and mothers do get passed
- 9:43on to children and even to grandchildren to
- 9:47the third and fourth generation.
- 9:48And that's something we have to work through
- 9:50and allow God to redeem if that's something
- 9:52that's been part of our experience.
- 9:53As for all of us, it is in
- 9:55some way.
- 9:56It doesn't mean that God is being vindictive,
- 9:59punishing people for something that wasn't theirs to
- 10:01commit.
- 10:02It means that God is recognizing the reality
- 10:06of how sin unfolds itself over time.
- 10:09And that's also something that God can redeem.
- 10:11So just a side note there.
- 10:14But as God is revealing his name, his
- 10:16character as this gracious, compassionate, steadfast and faithful
- 10:21God, we remember that he gave his Torah,
- 10:26he gave his law to show people the
- 10:28course of life.
- 10:30It wasn't the source of life, but it
- 10:31was the course of life.
- 10:32It was the way for them in their
- 10:34relationships with each other to reflect his character
- 10:37of love in the way they treated one
- 10:39another.
- 10:41And one of the things that God gave
- 10:42in the Torah was a feast calendar, a
- 10:46calendar of times to feast and a calendar
- 10:48of times to fast.
- 10:49And one of these feasts eventually became known
- 10:51as Pentecost.
- 10:53And you know what Pentecost commemorated?
- 10:55Well, it commemorated the harvest, but it also
- 10:58commemorated the giving of the law.
- 11:01This moment with Moses, this moment on Mount
- 11:03Sinai, when God is kind of reenacting and
- 11:07sealing the covenant and saying, yes, I am
- 11:09making a covenant with you and revealing his
- 11:12name more fully and his character more deeply,
- 11:15that moment is the moment that Pentecost commemorates.
- 11:19And now for those of us who follow
- 11:20Jesus, the word Pentecost has another resonance because
- 11:23it was on the feast of Pentecost after
- 11:25the resurrection and ascension of Jesus that the
- 11:27Holy Spirit was given to the early believers.
- 11:31That's what kicked off the movement that we
- 11:33see in the book of Acts, the explosion
- 11:35of the church, the spread of the gospel
- 11:37throughout the known world at that time was
- 11:40the coming of the Holy Spirit at the
- 11:42feast of Pentecost.
- 11:44And then it's not an accident that that
- 11:46happened on the feast day that commemorated the
- 11:49giving of the Torah, the giving of the
- 11:51law.
- 11:53We're supposed to see this connection.
- 11:54Oh, God, when he was in covenant with
- 11:57his people, he gave them the Torah.
- 11:58He gave them the course of life.
- 12:00He revealed his character to them.
- 12:02But then what does God give to us?
- 12:04Oh, God gives to us his spirit so
- 12:07that his spirit can realize that character in
- 12:10us from the inside out.
- 12:12And again, this brings us back to Paul's
- 12:14whole context in the letter of the Galatians
- 12:15that the law is not enough to actually
- 12:18change our hearts.
- 12:19It can show us what we need to
- 12:20do, but it doesn't give us the power
- 12:22to do it.
- 12:22But the spirit that we receive because we've
- 12:25put our faith in Jesus, the Messiah, the
- 12:27spirit can change our hearts.
- 12:29The spirit can bring his fruit about inside
- 12:32of us.
- 12:33And so this particular quality of God that
- 12:36he is faithful is seen in the gift
- 12:39of the Holy Spirit, that God is fulfilling
- 12:41his covenant to his people by sending Jesus
- 12:44and by sending the Holy Spirit so that
- 12:46his people can walk in the course of
- 12:49life as they love one another under his
- 12:52grace.
- 12:53So even the fact that we can become
- 12:55faithful a little bit like God is, is
- 12:58itself a proof of God's faithfulness to us,
- 13:01that God has been true to his people.
- 13:04God has kept covenant with his people in
- 13:06Jesus as Messiah and in the gift of
- 13:08the Holy Spirit.
- 13:11So it's always grounded in God's character.
- 13:14It's always grounded in who God is.
- 13:16But it is something that we can grow
- 13:18in ourselves.
- 13:19Faithfulness is a fruit or a part of
- 13:21the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
- 13:24So the question is, well, what does that
- 13:25mean?
- 13:26What does faithfulness mean?
- 13:27Who are we supposed to be faithful to
- 13:30and in what ways?
- 13:31Well, the primary context here is the people
- 13:34of God in their relationships with one another.
- 13:38So we might think of, we are all
- 13:40members of the same covenant.
- 13:43Now, this is harder for us.
- 13:45It's a bit more of a stretch because
- 13:46we're so not used to thinking about other
- 13:48human beings this way.
- 13:49Like we might think of being like members
- 13:50of the same club.
- 13:52Like I used to have a membership at
- 13:53this bougie gym called Lifetime Fitness because they
- 13:55had a climbing wall and my company that
- 13:58I was working for helped pay for half
- 14:00the membership, which is why I could afford
- 14:01it.
- 14:02And I was getting to know people at
- 14:04the climbing wall for about three weeks, learning
- 14:05their names, right?
- 14:06Then I got laid off from my company,
- 14:08so I lost my membership.
- 14:09I did not stay in touch with those
- 14:10climbing wall people.
- 14:11That was not a depth of covenantal relationship
- 14:14that endured beyond the climbing wall, right?
- 14:16But sometimes that's the only context we have.
- 14:18It's like, oh yeah, you autonomously choose to
- 14:20be part of a club.
- 14:21And so then you have a kind of
- 14:23tenuous connection with other members of the club.
- 14:25And you're like-minded people.
- 14:28That is not the right metaphor, the right
- 14:30paradigm for thinking about the covenant that we
- 14:33share with each other as disciples of Jesus.
- 14:35It's closer to marriage than to that, right?
- 14:38You're not married to every other Christian on
- 14:40the planet.
- 14:41That's not what I'm saying.
- 14:42But you are part of a covenant with
- 14:44them.
- 14:45You're a part of something that's meant to
- 14:46last, to endure.
- 14:49And so the way that we can think
- 14:50about this is we can be true to
- 14:53each other because God is true to us.
- 14:58We can be true to each other in
- 15:00our relationship with other believers because of how
- 15:02God has been faithful to us and faithful
- 15:05to his covenant with us.
- 15:08So that's the primary context where we live
- 15:10out this fruit of the Spirit is in
- 15:12our relationships with each other, being true to
- 15:15each other, being faithful to one another.
- 15:19What does that mean practically?
- 15:20Well, there's a couple of different ways that
- 15:22I think we can live this out.
- 15:23And one of them is a church application
- 15:24and one of them is a work application
- 15:26because we also want to get back to
- 15:28that idea of living out this fruit at
- 15:30work in this current series.
- 15:32So one is just to show up at
- 15:35church.
- 15:36Sometimes we get stuck on this and we
- 15:38think that showing up at church is somehow
- 15:40a law, right, like thou shalt show up
- 15:42at church on Sunday.
- 15:43Or maybe that's somehow sad with keeping it,
- 15:45showing up at church on Sunday or something
- 15:46like that.
- 15:47But again, that's the wrong way of thinking
- 15:49about this.
- 15:50We don't show up at church because it's
- 15:51a law.
- 15:52We show up at church because it's our
- 15:54family.
- 15:56So Katie and I, we're married, right?
- 15:58We've been married for over a decade.
- 16:00And when we see each other in the
- 16:03evening, it's not like I'm like, oh, checking
- 16:05off the box, saw my wife today, law
- 16:07fulfilled, accomplished.
- 16:09No, it's like, I want to see her.
- 16:11I am motivated to see her because we
- 16:13are married, because we're family, right?
- 16:14This is the home that we share together.
- 16:16Again, there are times when I don't get
- 16:18to see her on a given day because
- 16:20she has work and I have school or
- 16:22vice versa, and we aren't able to do
- 16:24the same thing.
- 16:25Our schedule doesn't overlap, but I'm eager to
- 16:27go back.
- 16:28So again, it's not a law, it's not
- 16:29a rule that you have to be at
- 16:30church on every Sunday, but you want to
- 16:33be connected with your family.
- 16:35You want to be faithful.
- 16:37Part of being faithful to one another as
- 16:39disciples of Jesus is being present enough, showing
- 16:42up enough so that we can open our
- 16:44hearts to each other and form a measure
- 16:47of mutual reliability and trust.
- 16:50But we can also show up at work.
- 16:53So at work, we may not have the
- 16:54same covenant connection with everybody around us.
- 16:56We may have brothers and sisters in Christ
- 16:58who work with us, but there are likely
- 17:00others who are not.
- 17:02And so we may not have that same
- 17:03sense of the covenant bond, but faithfulness also
- 17:06just simply means part of our character in
- 17:09terms of are we the kind of person
- 17:10that others can count on?
- 17:13Are we the kind of person who is
- 17:14trustworthy where others know that we will keep
- 17:18faith for the things entrusted to us?
- 17:21And you can see that Paul gets at
- 17:23this a little bit in Galatians 5 verse
- 17:2523, when he lists the parts of the
- 17:28fruit of the spirit.
- 17:28And then he says, against such things, there
- 17:30is no law.
- 17:32Like there might be different laws that Christians
- 17:34are concerned about.
- 17:35In the early centuries, it was the laws
- 17:37of the empire of Rome.
- 17:39Like sometimes the requirement to sacrifice to the
- 17:41emperor was idolatry.
- 17:42And so Christians couldn't go along with that.
- 17:45Paul may have something like that in mind
- 17:46here where he's saying, look, there's never been
- 17:48a law against love.
- 17:50There's never been a law against joy.
- 17:52There's never been a law against peace.
- 17:54When you open up your company handbook and
- 17:56you read all the requirements for you as
- 17:57an employee of your company, you're not gonna
- 17:58find a page that says, sorry, you can't
- 18:00be self-controlled in this workplace.
- 18:02Sorry, you can't be gentle in this workplace.
- 18:04Sorry, you can't be faithful in this workplace.
- 18:06Like it's not gonna happen.
- 18:07You're never gonna run into that problem.
- 18:09If you bring the character of faithfulness to
- 18:12your workplace, that will win the admiration of
- 18:15the people around you, not because you're trying
- 18:16to impress them, but just because you're you,
- 18:18because you're being an authentically faithful person.
- 18:21So you can ask this question diagnostically about
- 18:24yourself.
- 18:25Can your boss count on you?
- 18:27Can your coworkers rely on you?
- 18:29Can your clients trust you?
- 18:32And if not, that's an area where the
- 18:34Holy Spirit needs to work to bring more
- 18:36of the fruit of the spirit in your
- 18:37life.
- 18:38We can learn to be faithful to the
- 18:40charge.
- 18:41And just like in a covenant of marriage
- 18:43or in a commitment to the community of
- 18:47a local church or in a workplace, faithfulness
- 18:50is all about the small steps.
- 18:53There are big moments of temptation that come
- 18:55along.
- 18:56And what you do in those moments of
- 18:57temptation is determined by the small steps you've
- 19:00taken beforehand.
- 19:01So it's not about doing some big heroic
- 19:03thing at your workplace.
- 19:04It's about showing up to work today, doing
- 19:07your job well today, asking the Holy Spirit,
- 19:10what does it mean for me to be
- 19:11faithful to the charge today, just doing the
- 19:15next right thing.
- 19:16And as you do that, you will be
- 19:18a witness to the power of the Holy
- 19:20Spirit to those around you, even if they
- 19:22don't quite know exactly where it comes from
- 19:24yet.
- 19:27Lord Jesus, we want your Holy Spirit to
- 19:30be in us.
- 19:32We want to be faithful the way you've
- 19:34been faithful to us.
- 19:36Show us how to be faithful to one
- 19:37another, to be true to one another, and
- 19:40to be faithful to the charge with whatever's
- 19:41been entrusted to us at work.
- 19:43Do your work in us as we do
- 19:45our work with you, Amen.
- 19:53Thanks for listening.
