Latest / Birdland Territory / Coby Mayo homers again as the O's take the series against the Royals
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: What a while series for the Oriels in Kansas City. Man,
- 0:10Speaker 1: there was a lot going on, including in the final
- 0:13Speaker 1: game today when the Oriols got an eighty six win
- 0:16Speaker 1: hard earned over Kansas City.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Kobe Mayo a second straight day.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Where he hits a bomb four hundred plus for three
- 0:23Speaker 1: hundred feet Chris Bassett mixed bag on the mound. Nun
- 0:26Speaker 1: Yea has got to save at the end. Guys would
- 0:29Speaker 1: need thirty minutes to talk about that game. I mean,
- 0:33Speaker 1: the Orioles keep hanging in there, right. I mean, they're
- 0:36Speaker 1: not exactly getting on a roll. They're not beating teams big,
- 0:40Speaker 1: but they're eking out enough wins here to stay engaged
- 0:44Speaker 1: with the standings and kind of hold their head above water.
- 0:47Speaker 2: And it was a nice win for them today.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely a nice win.
- 0:52Speaker 4: And when you think about it, when you look at
- 0:54Speaker 4: the series realistically, winning too out of three, you gotta
- 0:57Speaker 4: take it with the way those games will win and
- 0:59Speaker 4: how they were play and I mean they're very easily
- 1:01Speaker 4: could have lost two of three and with some timely
- 1:04Speaker 4: pitching today the got the series win. But you got
- 1:07Speaker 4: to take two out of three, and like you said,
- 1:08Speaker 4: they're doing just enough right now. To kind of keep
- 1:10Speaker 4: their head above of water and really not losing any
- 1:15Speaker 4: ground in the standings, which is a blessing for the
- 1:17Speaker 4: Oriols right now. So it's they're plain enough to keep
- 1:20Speaker 4: themselves in good shape. But as we said, the schedule
- 1:23Speaker 4: here coming up is gonna get a little bit tougher,
- 1:25Speaker 4: more divisional opponents, and just gotta keep playing better.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Baseball.
- 1:31Speaker 5: Been such a roller coaster ride for this team through
- 1:34Speaker 5: the first couple of weeks of the season and right now,
- 1:37Speaker 5: and it's kind of indicative of how they're playing as
- 1:40Speaker 5: a whole, just the lack of consistency. Nothing's really coming
- 1:44Speaker 5: easy for them right Like you can even go back
- 1:46Speaker 5: to Monday's crazy win, guys, where Leoti Taveris hits that
- 1:50Speaker 5: grand Slam, you're up by five runs and you're still
- 1:53Speaker 5: kind of sweating it out because of Cameron Foster. And
- 1:56Speaker 5: then yesterday where it looked like Adley Ruschman hit that
- 1:59Speaker 5: go ahead, had two run shot, but they weren't able
- 2:02Speaker 5: to hold on for that one. And even today, you
- 2:05Speaker 5: take that big lead off the huge sixth inning, but
- 2:07Speaker 5: the Royals come right back in at the very next inning,
- 2:11Speaker 5: Bassett gives up a home run immediately. Nothing's coming easy
- 2:15Speaker 5: for them. But right now you're a game under five hundred,
- 2:19Speaker 5: and with how the rest of the American League looks
- 2:21Speaker 5: right now, that's not a bad place to be.
- 2:25Speaker 1: We hear the word grind a lot in baseball. The
- 2:27Speaker 1: orders are grinding here in April. Usually that comes as
- 2:30Speaker 1: the season gets deeper and longer. But you're right, Tim,
- 2:34Speaker 1: nothing has come easy, nothing's been smooth. It's been probably
- 2:39Speaker 1: really tough for the fans to watch.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Even today.
- 2:42Speaker 1: They got up by five, it got close again. Kobe
- 2:45Speaker 1: Mayo's era with two outs of the ninth gave Bobby
- 2:47Speaker 1: with a chance and Nunyaz got him out. And so
- 2:52Speaker 1: you just keep plugging and playing, right, I mean, you
- 2:54Speaker 1: just keep trying to find your way, and maybe they're
- 2:57Speaker 1: going to look up here one day and they will
- 2:59Speaker 1: be on a Yeah, I.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Think that's go ahead, dam go ahead. No.
- 3:04Speaker 5: No, I was going to say that that's certainly the
- 3:06Speaker 5: hope right now. And I feel like we're kind of
- 3:09Speaker 5: a broken record on these episodes where Leodi Taveres continues
- 3:13Speaker 5: to come through driving in runs today, Jeremiah Jackson continues
- 3:17Speaker 5: to come through driving in runs today. It's been nice
- 3:20Speaker 5: to see Kobe Mayo back to back days hit home
- 3:23Speaker 5: runs and moonshot home runs because it's been a struggle
- 3:26Speaker 5: for him. It was nice to see Colden Cowser contribute
- 3:29Speaker 5: today because it's been tough for him. Gunner Henderson, you're
- 3:32Speaker 5: still waiting to see him get going. Pete Alonso, he
- 3:35Speaker 5: hit a big home run early on in this ball game.
- 3:38Speaker 5: But it's just they're not firing on all cylinders right now, Brad,
- 3:43Speaker 5: that's really what it is.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that's it's kind of getting a complete game.
- 3:47Speaker 4: We haven't seen a complete game. Good starting pitching, good
- 3:50Speaker 4: bullpen working, good offense. I feel like all season to
- 3:53Speaker 4: this point, and like you said, you just got to
- 3:54Speaker 4: keep grinding and hopefully they come in stretches and you
- 3:57Speaker 4: can pull off three, four, five, six wins in a
- 3:59Speaker 4: row and get yourself above five hundred. And really that's
- 4:02Speaker 4: all I got to do right now. They're grinding. It's
- 4:04Speaker 4: tough wins. It's tough to keep leads right now, But
- 4:07Speaker 4: just keep doing what they're doing and scratching across runs
- 4:10Speaker 4: and they can and get the wins as they come
- 4:12Speaker 4: their way.
- 4:14Speaker 1: So the Oil scored only fourteen runs in four games
- 4:16Speaker 1: in Cleveland, they scored twenty runs in three games in
- 4:20Speaker 1: Kansas City runners in scoring position. Hitting was a big
- 4:23Speaker 1: difference in two series five for twenty six in Cleveland,
- 4:27Speaker 1: ten for thirty one in Kansas City three twenty three,
- 4:31Speaker 1: big difference. Let's talk about Kobe Meyo guys first eighteen games,
- 4:34Speaker 1: no homers, four ribis, one forty eight average, four forty
- 4:39Speaker 1: three ops. I mean, really really struggling.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Again.
- 4:42Speaker 1: We've seen a lot of struggles from Kobe and his
- 4:44Speaker 1: time in the big leagues, but you got these two
- 4:47Speaker 1: big swings. He only had two hits two for seven
- 4:50Speaker 1: the last two games with they were three run shots.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Earl Weaver specials here, so you hope that gets them going.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Did you see anything different or did he just get
- 4:59Speaker 1: a chance to drive ball and he did.
- 5:02Speaker 4: I think it was he got the pitches to hit
- 5:04Speaker 4: and he drove it, which was good to see. That's
- 5:06Speaker 4: what you want to see from him, and you hope
- 5:08Speaker 4: more hits and more consistency will come from that. But
- 5:11Speaker 4: actually I really liked them him getting to that fastball
- 5:13Speaker 4: inside and punishing it. He can put the hands inside,
- 5:17Speaker 4: kept the ball fair inside the foul pole. And then
- 5:20Speaker 4: today he just got a breaking ball over the middle
- 5:22Speaker 4: of his own and hit it to the moon. So
- 5:24Speaker 4: that's what you've heard about Kobe Mayo before, that he
- 5:26Speaker 4: has this light tier power and seeing this, maybe this
- 5:29Speaker 4: will jump start him a little bit and just have
- 5:31Speaker 4: a little bit more consistent at bats as the season
- 5:33Speaker 4: moves along, you hope.
- 5:35Speaker 5: That this can really get him going. Steve, and you
- 5:37Speaker 5: know this minor league system inside and out, and Kobe
- 5:40Speaker 5: Mayo he is beyond graduated the minors. You can look
- 5:44Speaker 5: at his numbers, the ops is off the charts. And
- 5:48Speaker 5: what's really unfortunate for him, he had a great September, Steve,
- 5:52Speaker 5: and he went into the offseason with a lot of momentum.
- 5:55Speaker 5: Spring training he was great and and it just hasn't
- 5:59Speaker 5: carried over into the start of this season. But what's
- 6:02Speaker 5: been the knock on Kobe Mayo throughout his professional career, Well,
- 6:07Speaker 5: can the glove play? Where's the glove going to play?
- 6:08Speaker 5: And of course injuries with Jordan Westberg going down, that
- 6:12Speaker 5: kind of pushed him back to third base, in combination
- 6:15Speaker 5: with Pete Alonso coming in this offseason. But I know
- 6:19Speaker 5: he had the error today. He's held his home for
- 6:22Speaker 5: the most part at third base. He's made some standout
- 6:25Speaker 5: plays to start double plays, Steve, but we're just waiting
- 6:29Speaker 5: for that power, waiting for that bat consistency at the
- 6:33Speaker 5: major league level, because Steve, you saw it all throughout
- 6:36Speaker 5: the miners.
- 6:38Speaker 2: It's interesting.
- 6:39Speaker 1: I wrote an article about Kobe I think it was
- 6:41Speaker 1: before last year, about how badly he was struggling initially
- 6:45Speaker 1: to start his pro career, and I wondered, man, as
- 6:48Speaker 1: anybody started this poorly? And I looked it up and
- 6:51Speaker 1: Cal Ripkens junior had a similar number of bats. And
- 6:54Speaker 1: I mean, in no way am I saying Kobe Mayo
- 6:56Speaker 1: is going to have the career that Cal had. But
- 6:58Speaker 1: I mean our friend Joe Paparato from a former sports
- 7:02Speaker 1: producer at Masson and Channel eleven, Joe PiZZ we all
- 7:05Speaker 1: know him.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Not easier to say uh.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Put on Twitter recently he compared Stours through a certain
- 7:12Speaker 1: number of at bats in Mayo and it was very
- 7:14Speaker 1: similar and Stowers took off after that. So again, it
- 7:18Speaker 1: wouldn't be the first young player to have extended struggles
- 7:22Speaker 1: and find it. This doesn't mean he's going to I'm
- 7:25Speaker 1: not selling it as that, but I'm just saying sometimes
- 7:29Speaker 1: this extra patience is really needed well.
- 7:32Speaker 5: Steve to that point, and again I'm not comparing him
- 7:34Speaker 5: to Gunner Henderson, and Gunner's going through his own share
- 7:37Speaker 5: of struggles. I think we all remember at the beginning
- 7:39Speaker 5: of twenty twenty three Gunner, for the first month and
- 7:42Speaker 5: a half he was batting below the Mendoza line. There
- 7:44Speaker 5: were talks, oh shoot, they sang Gunner Henderson down, and
- 7:47Speaker 5: then he took off from that point on. And you
- 7:50Speaker 5: can look at this entire young corps when they got
- 7:53Speaker 5: brought up. Initially, pretty much all of them struggled badly.
- 7:57Speaker 5: It took a month. Colden Cowser, it was really rough.
- 8:00Speaker 5: Jackson Holliday got sent back down. Westburg was maybe the
- 8:04Speaker 5: one exception. But Brad, just from your time and I'm
- 8:07Speaker 5: sure you could rattle off a ton of names when
- 8:10Speaker 5: it comes to this, just because you dominate at the
- 8:13Speaker 5: Triple A level, that jump from Triple A to the
- 8:16Speaker 5: majors is immense where it takes time for.
- 8:19Speaker 4: God absolutely, and watching Mayo, to me, it just seems
- 8:24Speaker 4: like his confidence isn't fully there. That's just from being
- 8:27Speaker 4: the full outsider. Never seen him in the minor leagues,
- 8:29Speaker 4: haven't really seen him play a ton but it just
- 8:32Speaker 4: you kind of get the feeling watching him that the
- 8:34Speaker 4: confidence that he had in the minor leagues isn't quite
- 8:36Speaker 4: there and it takes a little bit of time. I
- 8:37Speaker 4: always thought the biggest thing was developing at the major
- 8:40Speaker 4: league level, and a lot of teams kind of take
- 8:42Speaker 4: that for granted or sometimes don't have the best coaching.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Not saying the Oriels don't have that, but sometimes it's like,
- 8:47Speaker 4: you have these guys that are amazing in the minor
- 8:49Speaker 4: leagues at developing them, they get to the major leagues
- 8:51Speaker 4: and they kind of flounder out. They go to another
- 8:53Speaker 4: team they have this major success. Sometimes it's getting the
- 8:56Speaker 4: right person in their ears. Sometimes it's one little thing
- 8:59Speaker 4: either on the mound or hitting that all sudden things
- 9:02Speaker 4: just click. He obviously has the talent, it's there. I
- 9:05Speaker 4: just would love to see him just get that confidence
- 9:07Speaker 4: and go out there and be free to play, not
- 9:09Speaker 4: have somebody coming up behind him, not having to worry
- 9:11Speaker 4: about how much playing time he's going to get. Just
- 9:13Speaker 4: go out there, seize the position, and find a way
- 9:15Speaker 4: to get him out there every single day.
- 9:18Speaker 1: So he hit a three run homer on Tuesday that
- 9:21Speaker 1: was one fourteen off the bat and four hundred and
- 9:24Speaker 1: thirty nine feet. Those were both career best for Kobe,
- 9:27Speaker 1: both the exit velocity in the distance. Today he topped
- 9:30Speaker 1: the distance, won ten on the exit belit velocity four
- 9:34Speaker 1: fifty two distance. So I mean some most hitters can't
- 9:38Speaker 1: do this, So I mean his special swings by Mayo
- 9:42Speaker 1: to drive the ball like he did, and so hopefully
- 9:45Speaker 1: we see more of it and it gets him going
- 9:47Speaker 1: and it certainly welcome site for the OS fans, and
- 9:51Speaker 1: we're glad you joined us today. Berdland Territory, we got
- 9:53Speaker 1: a lot more to do with Steve, Tim and Brad.

- 11:10Speaker 1: Birdland Territory part of the Foul Territory network. Glad you
- 11:14Speaker 1: joined us today as we're taping. After the Birds wrapped
- 11:17Speaker 1: up the series in KC. They finally get an off
- 11:20Speaker 1: day tomorrow. Thirteen games in thirteen days they've played, so
- 11:23Speaker 1: that's well deserved. They went six and seven. They're twelve
- 11:26Speaker 1: and thirteen overall, and guys, last year after twenty five games,
- 11:30Speaker 1: they were ten and fifteen, So you know, that was
- 11:33Speaker 1: just obviously a miserable start, and they're exceeding that by
- 11:37Speaker 1: a little bit to this point twelve and thirteen.
- 11:40Speaker 2: So let's talk about Chris Bassett. Brad, what was your
- 11:43Speaker 2: take today?
- 11:43Speaker 1: I thought he was starting to turn the corner, but
- 11:46Speaker 1: today five runs, eight hits, five and a third. He
- 11:49Speaker 1: does get the win, but he's really had a tough
- 11:51Speaker 1: time with his fastball command this year. It's been hit
- 11:55Speaker 1: a lot, both the two seam and four seam. Today
- 11:57Speaker 1: made his two hundred and twenty third career big league start.
- 12:01Speaker 1: What did you guys think of it?
- 12:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you know, it's with Chris Passy. He's
- 12:07Speaker 3: been around forever.
- 12:08Speaker 4: There's no tricks that he's gonna throw out there. Everyone
- 12:10Speaker 4: knows exactly what he's trying to do. And I agree.
- 12:13Speaker 4: I just think the fastball command, which for him is
- 12:15Speaker 4: huge because it sets up all the other off speed
- 12:18Speaker 4: pitches that he throws, and I think it's just been
- 12:20Speaker 4: a little bit off, and when you don't have the
- 12:21Speaker 4: plus velocity, it's gonna get hit and it's most likely
- 12:24Speaker 4: gonna be for hits. And you know, gave up the
- 12:26Speaker 4: home run there in the sixth inning, which I know
- 12:29Speaker 4: they were really trying to get him through that six
- 12:31Speaker 4: to try to shorten the back end of that bullpen
- 12:33Speaker 4: with it being a little bit short today.
- 12:34Speaker 3: So I think they ran him back out there in
- 12:36Speaker 3: the day.
- 12:36Speaker 4: They might normally wouldn't have, but they knew there just
- 12:39Speaker 4: wasn't as many arms back there. So it's I think
- 12:43Speaker 4: this is what you're gonna get. I think he's not
- 12:45Speaker 4: gonna be seven innings shutout baseball. It's gonna be seven
- 12:48Speaker 4: innings three runs. You know, six innings, four runs. It's
- 12:51Speaker 4: it's gonna be someone that can hopefully get you innings
- 12:55Speaker 4: and get it to the other guys that kind of
- 12:56Speaker 4: shorten up the bullpen on those days and kind of
- 12:58Speaker 4: give guys some rest. But I think he's just gonna
- 13:00Speaker 4: get better as the season goes along. It's just because
- 13:02Speaker 4: he's got to tighten up that fastball command and I
- 13:03Speaker 4: think he'll get to where he wants to be, right.
- 13:06Speaker 5: I feel like that's that's been the season long issue
- 13:09Speaker 5: for him. And when Bassett has shined in in spurts.
- 13:14Speaker 5: It's been that curveball, it's been that sweeper. But I
- 13:18Speaker 5: think you can kind of say that with the majority
- 13:21Speaker 5: of the starting staff right. You can even go back
- 13:23Speaker 5: yesterday Shane Boz really struggled with his fastball command. And
- 13:27Speaker 5: just when you can't, when you don't have the feel
- 13:30Speaker 5: for your fastball, Brad, just how difficult is that for
- 13:34Speaker 5: as a pitcher to get into a rhythm, because that's
- 13:37Speaker 5: got to be your bread and butter to work to
- 13:39Speaker 5: the secondary pitches.
- 13:41Speaker 4: When you're playing catch on every single day, you're not
- 13:43Speaker 4: sitting there with the breaking ball grip in your hand.
- 13:46Speaker 4: Fast balls when you're playing catch, when you're throwing flat grounds,
- 13:49Speaker 4: when you're throwing bullpens, it's always off the fastball. And
- 13:51Speaker 4: a starting pitcher especially, we know we've seen Kyle Bradish
- 13:54Speaker 4: officerly go to his breaking balls way more than his fastball.
- 13:58Speaker 4: But if you don't have fastball command, you're going to
- 14:00Speaker 4: find yourself in trouble big time.
- 14:01Speaker 3: So just watching the last time through the rotation, I.
- 14:05Speaker 4: Would say I think all five starters kind of struggle
- 14:08Speaker 4: with the fastball come in. I don't know if it's
- 14:10Speaker 4: a philosophy thing or if it's it's just a one
- 14:13Speaker 4: time through the order type thing. But it'll be interesting
- 14:15Speaker 4: to see the next time through this rotation to see
- 14:18Speaker 4: what happens. But basketball come in has definitely been a
- 14:21Speaker 4: little bit of a struggle for all five of the guys.
- 14:22Speaker 4: So I'm curious to see how they're going to go
- 14:25Speaker 4: about it. And I would be remiss to think that
- 14:27Speaker 4: they don't correct it and get back to throwing more
- 14:30Speaker 4: fastballs where they want to throw it to set up
- 14:32Speaker 4: all they're all speed, because these five pitchers they're off
- 14:34Speaker 4: speed is all phenomenal. So I think it all starts
- 14:37Speaker 4: with the fastball, and when you don't have that, it's
- 14:39Speaker 4: just it makes pitching that much more difficult.
- 14:42Speaker 1: As rotation trying to get locked in and not quite
- 14:44Speaker 1: there yet. Man a rotation there is like four point
- 14:47Speaker 1: three and so it's not what we're expecting and hoping
- 14:52Speaker 1: and thinking we're going to see better. And Chris Bassett
- 14:56Speaker 1: really getting hit on the fastball early. They talked about
- 14:59Speaker 1: on the telecamp a little bit. Fourteen for twenty eight
- 15:02Speaker 1: on the two seamer. This was before today, four for
- 15:05Speaker 1: six on the four. They're cleaning up this pitch, so
- 15:07Speaker 1: he's having trouble getting to the secondaries because they're getting
- 15:11Speaker 1: the fastball before he can get ahead and finish off hitters.
- 15:15Speaker 1: And so Brad, when a pitcher has those stats, what
- 15:19Speaker 1: kind of adjustments can he make? What is he trying
- 15:23Speaker 1: to do now to make that better?
- 15:26Speaker 4: It's gonna be interesting to watch because I think for him,
- 15:28Speaker 4: what makes his curveball so effective is that he shows
- 15:31Speaker 4: ninety two to ninety three at the fastball, and then
- 15:33Speaker 4: his curveball drops off by fifteen miles an hour. He
- 15:35Speaker 4: can throw those real loopy ones, he can throw the sweeper,
- 15:38Speaker 4: but I just feel like it's really hard to start
- 15:40Speaker 4: batters off with those pitches, and if you're not able
- 15:43Speaker 4: to establish the fastball, so throwing a seventy five mile
- 15:46Speaker 4: an hour curveball is kind of batting practice speed when
- 15:50Speaker 4: you're not able to show the ninety three to ninety
- 15:51Speaker 4: four before that.
- 15:52Speaker 3: So I think it's.
- 15:53Speaker 4: Really just he's gonna have to get better with it.
- 15:56Speaker 4: I think he knows that. I think he would probably
- 15:58Speaker 4: say that's probably what's been struggling. And he can throw
- 16:01Speaker 4: that two seamer that I think to left these end
- 16:02Speaker 4: rightings that can be super effective.
- 16:04Speaker 3: So maybe more of that moving forward.
- 16:06Speaker 4: But I love watching guys pitch and I love seeing
- 16:09Speaker 4: the adjustments that they make, especially start to start and
- 16:12Speaker 4: even over a five start stretch. So it's going to
- 16:14Speaker 4: be really interesting to watch and see not only what
- 16:16Speaker 4: he does, but the entire rotation moving forward here these
- 16:18Speaker 4: next two to three starts moving forward, So.
- 16:23Speaker 1: The others take two of three in Kansas City, they'll
- 16:25Speaker 1: take that at three and four road trip, and again
- 16:29Speaker 1: they're just not clicking in.
- 16:31Speaker 2: They're holding their head.
- 16:32Speaker 1: It's a repeat effort for us on this show, but
- 16:36Speaker 1: that's because they are doing it so again, ten and
- 16:38Speaker 1: fifteen would be a disaster, fourteen and eleven we'd love it.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Twelve and thirteen with all the injuries, I guess it's
- 16:45Speaker 1: acceptable for now and you just have to find a
- 16:48Speaker 1: way to build on that. Tim and I think it
- 16:51Speaker 1: off day comes at a good time for the Oriols
- 16:53Speaker 1: to kind of regroup and get at this homestand it'll
- 16:56Speaker 1: be interesting because Boston, which has struggled more than the Orioles,
- 16:59Speaker 1: is coming to town.
- 17:00Speaker 5: Well, you got a couple of struggling teams coming to
- 17:02Speaker 5: town in Boston this weekend. And then it's a weird
- 17:06Speaker 5: scheduling quirk because they're off tomorrow, and then they're off
- 17:08Speaker 5: again Monday, after playing all of these games in a row,
- 17:11Speaker 5: which is a little odd, and then the Astros come
- 17:14Speaker 5: to town. It's time to kind of get back to
- 17:17Speaker 5: that point like they did earlier in the season, where
- 17:20Speaker 5: you rattle off six of seven or five of seven
- 17:23Speaker 5: to get get on track, because it gets real in
- 17:26Speaker 5: these next couple of weeks. You've gone through twenty five
- 17:30Speaker 5: games without playing an American Least League East opponent, which
- 17:33Speaker 5: is crazy. So now you're gonna face a lot of that,
- 17:37Speaker 5: especially in May. You got two series against the Yankees
- 17:40Speaker 5: coming up in the span of twelve days. I believe
- 17:44Speaker 5: the Rays as well. So you're right, Steve, they just
- 17:48Speaker 5: gotta get into a bit of a rhythm. It's these
- 17:51Speaker 5: starts and stops, and that's they have the twelve and
- 17:55Speaker 5: thirteen record to show for it.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Yeah, and just seems like they're right there.
- 18:02Speaker 4: They get going, and then it's either an off day
- 18:04Speaker 4: or they have a little setback in a series, and
- 18:06Speaker 4: then it just kind of seems like, like we said,
- 18:08Speaker 4: we've kind of been talking about the same things. I
- 18:09Speaker 4: feel like the last six seventh series we've done it's
- 18:12Speaker 4: been so close. You have this big win and then
- 18:15Speaker 4: it's a loss, and then it's a big win or
- 18:17Speaker 4: a loss for the series, and it just kind of
- 18:19Speaker 4: like keeps beIN on wash cycle here.
- 18:22Speaker 5: Well, and guys, another come from behind win today. Their
- 18:26Speaker 5: last four wins have been come from behind wins, which
- 18:29Speaker 5: is crazy. And I saw this stat before we started
- 18:32Speaker 5: the O's. They have a negative eighteen run differential in
- 18:36Speaker 5: innings one through five. They're plus fourteen in innings six
- 18:40Speaker 5: and onward. And if you look at their lad in
- 18:43Speaker 5: close situations seventh inning and beyond games within two runs,
- 18:47Speaker 5: I believe their ops is great. It's like well over
- 18:51Speaker 5: nine hundred and so much better a year over year.
- 18:54Speaker 5: But it gets back to the point that we're having.
- 18:57Speaker 5: And to their credit, they have scored early in these
- 19:00Speaker 5: past couple of games, but get that lead and then
- 19:04Speaker 5: that way you don't have to chase.
- 19:07Speaker 1: You know, we keep talking about them injuries and it
- 19:09Speaker 1: is a factor here. But yet I also in my
- 19:12Speaker 1: ear always here Bucks former skipper Brad Schwarmer, skipper Buck Showalter,
- 19:17Speaker 1: who always said, no one's gonna feel sorry for you.
- 19:20Speaker 1: They're glad you have the injuries. They want to come
- 19:22Speaker 1: in and take advantage of your problems. No one wants
- 19:25Speaker 1: to hear about your problem, so and the Orioles know
- 19:28Speaker 1: that more than anyone too. They're not the only team
- 19:30Speaker 1: with a bunch of injuries here, so they have to
- 19:33Speaker 1: just keep plugging away and keep playing. Speaking about that man,
- 19:36Speaker 1: it was disappointing to see Jackson Holliday have a setback
- 19:40Speaker 1: at Tripa a Norfolk. He struck out swinging on Tuesday night.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Immediately shook his right hand. That's the wrist in hand
- 19:47Speaker 1: where he had the hamlet bone surgery. That was February twelve,
- 19:52Speaker 1: I believe. So it's been a minute, but keeps having
- 19:55Speaker 1: little setbacks here, and my concern level obviously skyrockets.
- 20:00Speaker 2: And you see that.
- 20:00Speaker 1: You got to be so concerned for this kid that
- 20:03Speaker 1: is there something else gonna have to happen here procedure wise?
- 20:07Speaker 2: Is it just an extended rest?
- 20:09Speaker 1: The Oriels have sent him back to Baltimore for an
- 20:11Speaker 1: MRI and as a postgame Wednesday, Tim, we still haven't
- 20:15Speaker 1: heard the results of that.
- 20:17Speaker 5: Yeah, Steve, I'm very worried about Jackson Holiday. I really am,
- 20:22Speaker 5: because he's in a tough situation. Guys, ham a bone surgery. Obviously,
- 20:29Speaker 5: we see that it's not linear, and so many guys
- 20:33Speaker 5: respond to it differently. Because at Corbyn Carroll he had
- 20:37Speaker 5: the surgery around Jackson's time, Francisco Lindor had the surgery
- 20:41Speaker 5: around Jackson's time. Both of those guys are back. Carroll's
- 20:44Speaker 5: having a great season, Lindor is really struggling, and we've
- 20:48Speaker 5: yet to see Jackson Holiday make his debuts. So at
- 20:52Speaker 5: my concern level really ratcheted up when he told a
- 20:57Speaker 5: reporter in Norfolk that he was still dealing with a
- 21:00Speaker 5: lot of pain and that was before the first reset,
- 21:03Speaker 5: and now it came back and this happening frad He's
- 21:07Speaker 5: twenty two years old. This is still a really young kid.
- 21:11Speaker 5: He has not played that many games in the majors.
- 21:13Speaker 5: He obviously missed all of spring training. I just think
- 21:18Speaker 5: fans need to have temperate expectations for Jackson Holiday when
- 21:23Speaker 5: he comes back, because this is going to continue to
- 21:26Speaker 5: be a process. For a kid that young to miss
- 21:30Speaker 5: all of spring training and now you're coming into the
- 21:32Speaker 5: season in the middle of it, that's a tough spot
- 21:35Speaker 5: to be in.
- 21:36Speaker 4: Yeah, and like you said, he is so young, and
- 21:39Speaker 4: this is probably if I had to guess his first
- 21:41Speaker 4: injury he's ever dealt with his entire life. So it's
- 21:44Speaker 4: you have these expectations when you have the surgery. You
- 21:46Speaker 4: hear about all these guys who've had before, Oh it's
- 21:48Speaker 4: no problem, you get it taken out. But like I
- 21:51Speaker 4: was telling you guys yesterday, I heard them say, surgery
- 21:53Speaker 4: is always the last resort. It's still cutting open skin making,
- 21:58Speaker 4: taking a bone out, or taking some kind of loose
- 22:00Speaker 4: body out and sewing it back up, and you just
- 22:02Speaker 4: never know how the body's going to recover.
- 22:04Speaker 3: So same thing with you, Tim.
- 22:05Speaker 4: I heard on the broadcast Ben talk about when he
- 22:08Speaker 4: was in Baltimore getting a check up, and he said
- 22:10Speaker 4: he talked to him and he said, yeah, it's still
- 22:12Speaker 4: really sore. And I was kind of the same way.
- 22:14Speaker 4: I was like, I that just doesn't seem good. And
- 22:17Speaker 4: then to see that swing yesterday, seeing a reaction like that,
- 22:20Speaker 4: you hardly.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Ever see good results come forward.
- 22:23Speaker 4: I'm hoping for his sake that maybe it's just it
- 22:25Speaker 4: tweaks something else and it's not a big deal. But
- 22:28Speaker 4: I don't know, Like maybe at this point you just think,
- 22:30Speaker 4: but if he comes back by All Star break, that's
- 22:32Speaker 4: a positive.
- 22:33Speaker 3: I just I think you're right.
- 22:34Speaker 4: I think fans need to just kind of temper expectations,
- 22:37Speaker 4: forget about expected timeline for him coming back, and whatever
- 22:40Speaker 4: you get from there would be positive.
- 22:43Speaker 8: And Steve, if you want to look glass half fulled,
- 22:46Speaker 8: Jeremiah Jackson is still playing his bottle. So this isn't
- 22:50Speaker 8: a situation where the replacement at second base is really
- 22:54Speaker 8: dragging the team down that it's quite the opposite.
- 22:58Speaker 1: And I've just been so impressed with Jackson holiday the
- 23:01Speaker 1: player and the young man who hit the major leagues
- 23:04Speaker 1: with so much attention on him.
- 23:06Speaker 2: There was a white hot spotlight.
- 23:07Speaker 1: He's from a baseball family, his dad's such a famous guy,
- 23:11Speaker 1: and dealing with all of that, I think this kid
- 23:14Speaker 1: has been amazing and other media. When we talk amongst ourselves,
- 23:18Speaker 1: we say the same thing. Man Jackson never gets a
- 23:21Speaker 1: moment to rest, and he's always accommodating, he's always polite,
- 23:25Speaker 1: he's always great with us. So he can't help but
- 23:27Speaker 1: root for someone like that who has no ego. He
- 23:31Speaker 1: doesn't think he's a great player. He just wants to
- 23:33Speaker 1: be a ballplayer, and so I can't wait to see
- 23:35Speaker 1: him back on the field. We wish Jackson the best
- 23:38Speaker 1: and hope this latest setback is going to be nothing.
- 23:41Speaker 1: He can't overcome. We got more to do, Birdland Territory,
- 23:46Speaker 1: Al East foes are coming.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Those fans will talk about that in a moment.

- 24:09Speaker 1: Fan guys, I don't know what to make about the
- 24:13Speaker 1: Boston Red Sox. They are at the bottom of the
- 24:15Speaker 1: league as of our taping of this show. Garrett Crochet
- 24:20Speaker 1: has really struggled. Brian Bao has really struggled. The el
- 24:24Speaker 1: see Bayo Friday Night in Baltimore Crochet Saturday Crochet seven
- 24:28Speaker 1: eighty eighty ra A connorly Early, the young kid who's
- 24:31Speaker 1: expected to pitch Sunday, has been pitching well. They were
- 24:34Speaker 1: supposed to have the best rotation in baseball, maybe or
- 24:37Speaker 1: one of them, and it hasn't panned out so far.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Gonna be interesting to see how these two teams match
- 24:43Speaker 1: up as they're both trying to find themselves and here
- 24:46Speaker 1: they are seeing each other this weekend.
- 24:50Speaker 4: Yeah, it's one of those things that almost makes you
- 24:52Speaker 4: a little bit worried that they're they're kind of due, because,
- 24:55Speaker 4: like you said, this rotation was supposed to be one
- 24:57Speaker 4: of the best in the league, and you know Crochet
- 24:59Speaker 4: is not and continue pitching the way he has. He
- 25:02Speaker 4: has a track record behind him and his stuff is
- 25:04Speaker 4: just too good.
- 25:05Speaker 3: So you just kind of hope the.
- 25:06Speaker 4: Ools can kind of jump on him while they're down
- 25:08Speaker 4: and just kind of keep them there and at least
- 25:10Speaker 4: take two out of three in this series, because like
- 25:12Speaker 4: you said, it's it only gets tougher from here. So
- 25:14Speaker 4: these are the teams are going to face a bunch,
- 25:16Speaker 4: especially moving forward, and I haven't faced them yet this year,
- 25:19Speaker 4: So you just kind of hope you jump on them
- 25:21Speaker 4: while they're down and kind of just take advantage of
- 25:23Speaker 4: them while they're they're scuffling a little bit.
- 25:26Speaker 5: I'm just hoping. I went into this week guys, really
- 25:29Speaker 5: hoping that the starting rotation could get back on the
- 25:32Speaker 5: right foot, and it hasn't exactly gone according to plans
- 25:36Speaker 5: so far. Because the Royals that they entered the series
- 25:39Speaker 5: against the O's dead last in the Majors in terms
- 25:41Speaker 5: of runs, scored. The Red Sox have eighty nine runs score.
- 25:45Speaker 5: That's the least in the American League East. I hope
- 25:49Speaker 5: that the start, you know, Rogers can get back on track,
- 25:52Speaker 5: Bradish can really put it together, and Dean Kramer will
- 25:55Speaker 5: be pitching in this series as well. But the AL
- 25:59Speaker 5: Least is a whole. It's a little funky right now.
- 26:02Speaker 5: And heck, I remember, probably through May or June last year,
- 26:06Speaker 5: it seemed like, oh, the AL East is down, Steve
- 26:09Speaker 5: the AL East, and then of course they end up
- 26:11Speaker 5: sending multiple teams to the playoffs. But the Yankees are
- 26:16Speaker 5: the Yankees. The Rays are surprising people, like they always do. Brad.
- 26:21Speaker 5: We always joke on my show, we call them the cockroaches.
- 26:24Speaker 5: They're they're just never dead, like, you know, you think
- 26:27Speaker 5: that this is gonna be the year that they fall off,
- 26:29Speaker 5: and somehow they do it on the shoe string budget.
- 26:32Speaker 5: But the Blue Jays, like the Orioles, they're dealing with
- 26:35Speaker 5: a ton of injuries right now, a ton of injuries.
- 26:39Speaker 5: So there's a lot of different unique storylines going on
- 26:43Speaker 5: in the AL East.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Yeah, and you.
- 26:47Speaker 1: And you realize somebody will eventually separate or more than one.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Somebody's and everybody thinks it's gonna be the Yankees, because
- 26:55Speaker 1: everybody always thinks it's gonna be the Yankees. Oreal fans
- 26:58Speaker 1: were used to being with that, But why can't it
- 27:01Speaker 1: be the Orioles. I mean, yes, they haven't played great
- 27:04Speaker 1: and there's nothing we've seen in twenty five games to
- 27:07Speaker 1: say that now, next twenty five they'll go fifteen to ten.
- 27:10Speaker 2: But sometimes they do. It just works out that way.
- 27:14Speaker 1: And Brad, what's it like for a player when the
- 27:17Speaker 1: team is quite not performing at the level you know
- 27:20Speaker 1: it can, but you also know you got all this
- 27:22Speaker 1: time to get your act together.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's still super early, but there's definitely
- 27:28Speaker 4: some things that I would think the team would think
- 27:30Speaker 4: they need to improve. And I think it's one of
- 27:32Speaker 4: those things where you know it's gonna come, you just
- 27:35Speaker 4: you don't want it to be mid May by the
- 27:37Speaker 4: time it gets there. And like it's one of those
- 27:40Speaker 4: sense of urgency things that you just want to do
- 27:43Speaker 4: exactly what you expected to do when the season started.
- 27:46Speaker 4: And I feel like they haven't lived up to that point,
- 27:48Speaker 4: Like we said, we just now have. We haven't seen
- 27:50Speaker 4: a full complete game for a week to ten days
- 27:53Speaker 4: at a time right now, and I know it's there
- 27:57Speaker 4: just watching these games. It's just so close, and these
- 27:59Speaker 4: series is been so close to being there, and then
- 28:01Speaker 4: it's like, like you said, he take that little tiny
- 28:03Speaker 4: step back, and then it takes a game for it
- 28:05Speaker 4: to get going again, and then it gets going and
- 28:07Speaker 4: then the same thing kind of seems to happen. It's
- 28:08Speaker 4: just like I said, I think that the roster is
- 28:10Speaker 4: too talented. These guys are coming back off the injury list,
- 28:13Speaker 4: and I just think it's right there. Like Tim said,
- 28:15Speaker 4: I agree, I'm really looking forward to this next time
- 28:18Speaker 4: through the rotation. I think Trevor Rodgers is gonna set
- 28:20Speaker 4: the tone when he gets out there next and when
- 28:23Speaker 4: rotation gets going, the top two guys go out there,
- 28:25Speaker 4: you could roll off ten in a row, fifteen in
- 28:27Speaker 4: a row.
- 28:27Speaker 3: You just never know.
- 28:28Speaker 4: You just need that first guy to just kind of
- 28:30Speaker 4: set the tone and get it going.
- 28:33Speaker 5: Brad, I'd love to hear your thoughts, just as a
- 28:36Speaker 5: former Oreole of course heading into these Al East games.
- 28:39Speaker 5: And you know, I remember Buck really relishing the fact,
- 28:43Speaker 5: you know, anytime you can beat the Yankees, you can
- 28:45Speaker 5: beat the Red Sox whatever. Obviously, during your time with
- 28:49Speaker 5: the O's. You guys had that big rivalry with the
- 28:51Speaker 5: Blue Jays and Bautista and all of that. Like, what
- 28:55Speaker 5: was there an extra juice heading into these type of games.
- 28:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's you know, it's a division game,
- 29:01Speaker 4: like it's I know, it doesn't count more than a
- 29:03Speaker 4: regular game, but it just feels that way when you
- 29:05Speaker 4: play these teams, you know this is gonna be the
- 29:06Speaker 4: first of thirteen or fourteen games you play them this year,
- 29:09Speaker 4: It's it's different because you know you're going to see
- 29:11Speaker 4: them more often than you see other teams. And I
- 29:14Speaker 4: think it adds a little extra juice. There should be
- 29:16Speaker 4: a little bit more spark in the stadium when you're
- 29:18Speaker 4: facing the Red Sox or the Yankees, and it's just
- 29:21Speaker 4: it's more familiar. You're used, you're more used to the players.
- 29:24Speaker 4: There's really no surprises. It's you got to go out there,
- 29:27Speaker 4: execute and win the games. And I know anytime we
- 29:29Speaker 4: were up in Toronto, especially those couple of years, it
- 29:31Speaker 4: was there was extra juice. It could have been the
- 29:34Speaker 4: beginning of apri but you kind of never knew what.
- 29:36Speaker 3: Was going to happen.
- 29:37Speaker 4: We might have somebody throw a ball behind somebody and
- 29:39Speaker 4: now there's a little bit extra excitement there, but it's
- 29:42Speaker 4: it was just those games are fun that the games
- 29:44Speaker 4: in the East are extra fun and you get to
- 29:47Speaker 4: play in some historic ballpark. So it just kind of
- 29:48Speaker 4: adds to the whole lore of the Al East and
- 29:52Speaker 4: that's what it's all about. And when you're in the
- 29:54Speaker 4: Al East, you think it's the best. You don't think
- 29:56Speaker 4: there's a better division in baseball, and you know that
- 29:58Speaker 4: when you go into and it just has a different deal.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Should be fun. It's exciting weekend in Birdland.
- 30:04Speaker 1: The Red Sox in Town Houston after that as the
- 30:07Speaker 1: homestand commences on Friday night and the Oriels begin Al
- 30:11Speaker 1: Ease games. I'm old school man. I missed when they
- 30:13Speaker 1: played eighteen times. I love that. So now it's thirteen.
- 30:16Speaker 1: I mean, it's still something, but it's not as many
- 30:19Speaker 1: as it used to be when almost half the game
- 30:21Speaker 1: for Al East. So guys, enjoy the next few days,
- 30:24Speaker 1: catch your breath, and we'll recoup this weekend and resume
- 30:28Speaker 1: with another edition of Birdland Territory.
- 30:31Speaker 2: For Tim and for Brad, I'm Steve Bleski.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Will talk to you next time on Birdland Territory.
