- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Jim Hayes alongside Kyle Gibson and Lance Linn. And we
- 0:15Speaker 1: always start the show with a little begging. We're going
- 0:18Speaker 1: to do it a little differently this time. Instead of
- 0:20Speaker 1: showing the graphic, the same graphic, we're trying to get
- 0:23Speaker 1: to seven. K. Let's tug at the heartstrings.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Okay.
- 0:27Speaker 1: We are a family oriented program, so instead of the graphic,
- 0:32Speaker 1: I thought we'd chose something that shows us as a family. Okay.
- 0:37Speaker 1: That's Kyle, my son and our dog Stella. And if
- 0:41Speaker 1: you like family things, if you like America, if you
- 0:44Speaker 1: like puppies, please hit the subscribe button. We're trying to
- 0:48Speaker 1: get to seven. K. Was that you remember that, Kyle?
- 0:51Speaker 1: It was a pooches at the park day?
- 0:53Speaker 3: Absolutely, so if we're going to show the pooch, we
- 0:55Speaker 3: got a one year old Nishka today, so you know, big,
- 0:59Speaker 3: big one year old malamute. So since your putting made
- 1:03Speaker 3: the show, I figured up on to make the show.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Jim, that's okay, right, and we we we tug at
- 1:08Speaker 1: the heart strings here.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Yeah, I didn't know what we were doing that I
- 1:11Speaker 4: would I could have had all the the bulldogs ready
- 1:14Speaker 4: to go.
- 1:14Speaker 3: How many Let's see, I mean you got you got
- 1:16Speaker 3: a couple of bigger outside dogs.
- 1:18Speaker 5: What do you got?
- 1:19Speaker 4: We got two great Pyrenees. They run the farming picture.
- 1:23Speaker 4: Yeah they stand. They just sit in the middle of
- 1:25Speaker 4: the driveway so you can't drive past them.
- 1:28Speaker 2: And then the real, the real killers are the French.
- 1:32Speaker 4: Bulldogs, stone killers if you do, what's that?
- 1:39Speaker 1: Really?
- 1:39Speaker 5: You have more dogs than kids?
- 1:40Speaker 2: Now, no, even everybody has, everyone has their own.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Yeah you know, wait, French, you got.
- 1:48Speaker 4: More goats, more goats than more goats than kids, and
- 1:51Speaker 4: more chickens and kids.
- 1:53Speaker 1: But dogs, everyone gets there. They take the French dogs.
- 1:57Speaker 1: French are French bulldogs really aggressive? I thought they were
- 1:59Speaker 1: like the sweetest, friendliest dogs.
- 2:02Speaker 2: To chickens and goats and stuff like that.
- 2:05Speaker 5: They got a.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Little Napoleon in on, so you gotta watch.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Them all right now, last time, by the way, you
- 2:12Speaker 1: have a beautiful patio, Kyle. The stone work is is wonderful.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 2:17Speaker 3: You know, we've gone through a lot of rain here
- 2:18Speaker 3: in Saint Louis, so I just I wanted to do
- 2:21Speaker 3: an outdoor edition, you know, just to sit outside, you know,
- 2:26Speaker 3: enjoy it. So I'm tucked in the corner here, and
- 2:30Speaker 3: we got the back of it faces our backyard here
- 2:32Speaker 3: down a little bit, and tucked in the woods here
- 2:34Speaker 3: a little bit. So if you're here, you know you
- 2:36Speaker 3: probably just heard the airplane. My goal is to make
- 2:38Speaker 3: it kind of like a master setting here where people
- 2:40Speaker 3: who are just listening can hear the birds, and you know,
- 2:43Speaker 3: fitting there'll be some cardinals fly ups.
- 2:47Speaker 1: It's a heart warming program today. All right. Last time
- 2:49Speaker 1: we talked, you guys went back and forth in a
- 2:53Speaker 1: fascinating discussion about if the Cardinals keep winning, does Time
- 2:58Speaker 1: change his plans a little to flip basically everybody and
- 3:02Speaker 1: build for the future, and does he kind of reassess
- 3:05Speaker 1: and uh it maybe keeps some things, maybe flip some things,
- 3:09Speaker 1: but also worry about the now instead of just the future.
- 3:13Speaker 1: So I asked him about that. I told him we
- 3:16Speaker 1: were discussing it with Kyle and Lance, and he said,
- 3:21Speaker 1: I'll bet Lance had some things to say and we
- 3:24Speaker 1: can put it in. And I said he did, And
- 3:27Speaker 1: I said, no, Lance is like flip everyone, keep building.
- 3:31Speaker 1: You got to follow the course. So he told me,
- 3:35Speaker 1: and he was he's really good at phrasing things. But
- 3:38Speaker 1: I was kind of digging through to figure out what
- 3:40Speaker 1: he said, and basically he said, we would like to
- 3:44Speaker 1: do both, but we will stay the course and we
- 3:46Speaker 1: will find creative ways to build for the now if
- 3:51Speaker 1: this winning is sustainable, while also kind of following the
- 3:55Speaker 1: plan for the future. So I'm gonna start review, Kyle,
- 3:59Speaker 1: because you brought the dog to the show, and I
- 4:01Speaker 1: appreciate that. Uh, do you think that that's the smart
- 4:05Speaker 1: way to do it, where he's gonna worry about the
- 4:08Speaker 1: now if it's sustainable they keep winning finding creative, creative
- 4:13Speaker 1: ways as he.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Flipped, Yeah, I mean, I will never doubt you know,
- 4:20Speaker 3: Hime's intelligence and intelligence and his plan, right, you know,
- 4:24Speaker 3: he's the one who came up with this with his staff.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I know that they have a plan going forward, and
- 4:29Speaker 3: I'm sure it's a very good one.
- 4:32Speaker 5: I just think when you get.
- 4:35Speaker 3: To certain times and a rebuild, we'll say and I
- 4:39Speaker 3: don't necessarily think this was a full on rebuild. You know,
- 4:42Speaker 3: they they stayed with a lot of the same pieces.
- 4:44Speaker 3: They didn't just you know, trade everybody away and overhaul
- 4:47Speaker 3: the whole thing. This is really a kind of a
- 4:50Speaker 3: see what you got here, and we're gonna talk about
- 4:54Speaker 3: Gorman here.
- 4:54Speaker 5: In a little bit.
- 4:55Speaker 3: But if Walker weather Holt, when Burlison Herrera, if these
- 5:02Speaker 3: guys are who you want them to be and you
- 5:05Speaker 3: think they are one, how many games do you need
- 5:08Speaker 3: to see of them to know if they are the
- 5:10Speaker 3: player you were envision. If that's a full season, then
- 5:13Speaker 3: you might as well just wait till next year. If
- 5:16Speaker 3: you can take one hundred games and see, man, I
- 5:19Speaker 3: really like what we got here, these are our guys
- 5:21Speaker 3: going forward, then to me, that means you're ready. To me,
- 5:25Speaker 3: that means like, okay, if these guys have taken one
- 5:27Speaker 3: hundred games and put you in a really really good
- 5:30Speaker 3: spot that nobody expected, because maybe you didn't expect all
- 5:33Speaker 3: of them to take the step forward and become the
- 5:36Speaker 3: player that you wanted them to be. That could be
- 5:39Speaker 3: the case. But if they did, then in my mind,
- 5:42Speaker 3: I think you reward those guys by saying, Hey, you
- 5:46Speaker 3: guys are the core, you guys are the future. We
- 5:49Speaker 3: have the now right here. What good does it do
- 5:54Speaker 3: to essentially kind of send the message of all right,
- 5:57Speaker 3: maybe this isn't the group this year. You guys have
- 6:00Speaker 3: fifteen games over five hundred at the All Star break,
- 6:03Speaker 3: But not the group we really want to go for.
- 6:06Speaker 3: So we're gonna trade away that some of the piece
- 6:08Speaker 3: that got you here, and we're gonna go for next year.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Well guess what. Next year could come around and you
- 6:12Speaker 3: have injuries, you have a step back for players, you
- 6:14Speaker 3: have some struggles, and then you played it for next
- 6:17Speaker 3: year and next year's nothing, and now you're going for
- 6:19Speaker 3: twenty twenty eight. I just am a believer and win
- 6:22Speaker 3: the players on the field put you in a spot
- 6:24Speaker 3: to make the playoffs. And it's May seventh, all right,
- 6:28Speaker 3: you can't make the playoffs May seventh, But come July twentieth, you.
- 6:31Speaker 5: Got a pretty good idea.
- 6:33Speaker 3: If the players on the team reward you and get
- 6:35Speaker 3: you in a spot to make the playoffs, it's okay
- 6:38Speaker 3: to shift course and say, these are our guys going forward.
- 6:42Speaker 3: What can we do to help these guys make the playoffs.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Maybe it's just making a trade one year earlier than
- 6:49Speaker 3: you would or five months earlier than you would. I
- 6:52Speaker 3: don't think that's a bad thing to do, and I
- 6:53Speaker 3: think it sends the young core a really good message
- 6:55Speaker 3: of hey, you guys rewarded us with a really awesome season.
- 7:00Speaker 3: We're going to give you a chance to go make
- 7:01Speaker 3: the playoffs. One playoff experience is huge for young players.
- 7:04Speaker 3: And what better way to increase revenues and bring fans
- 7:07Speaker 3: back then to get them into the playoffs and to
- 7:10Speaker 3: get fans what they want to see.
- 7:11Speaker 5: And that's October baseball.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Some good points.
- 7:15Speaker 5: All right, that was my Ted talk. That was my
- 7:17Speaker 5: Ted talk. Lance, Go ahead, Yeah, all right.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Go ahead, Lance.
- 7:22Speaker 4: No. I mean when you look, the question last week
- 7:25Speaker 4: was if they're in a like a playoff hunt.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Right, are we going to change course? Or are we
- 7:31Speaker 2: going to change course?
- 7:32Speaker 4: The question is is all right, where do we see
- 7:34Speaker 4: the group being moving forward?
- 7:37Speaker 5: Right?
- 7:37Speaker 4: That everyday guys are young and controllable, and they're not
- 7:42Speaker 4: flippable anyways because you're trying to build around them. So
- 7:44Speaker 4: the question that I ask, and is that Hin's going
- 7:49Speaker 4: to have to ask himself and the staff, is are
- 7:52Speaker 4: we are we all in? Or are we just going
- 7:54Speaker 4: to go half in? And if it's like, hey, if
- 7:57Speaker 4: we're just going to go half in, then I look
- 8:00Speaker 4: at I look at some of the stantics the.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Golly, like, do you look at some of the one
- 8:09Speaker 2: year signs that they had?
- 8:10Speaker 4: Those guys aren't the factors of hey, we're going to
- 8:14Speaker 4: win a We're going to win or not in my opinion,
- 8:18Speaker 4: right if you So that's why I was like, hey,
- 8:20Speaker 4: if we're not going to go in, then stay the course.
- 8:23Speaker 4: But if it's like, hey, we need to figure out
- 8:25Speaker 4: how we're going to win a playoff series, we need
- 8:27Speaker 4: another starter.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Okay, we know we have Walker, all the.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Guys that that Kyle said, We have all those guys
- 8:34Speaker 4: that are all young, and Lars is going to come
- 8:36Speaker 4: back and shure up the outfield in a way that
- 8:38Speaker 4: people don't realize what he's going to bring to the table,
- 8:41Speaker 4: especially to a winning ball club. And then you look
- 8:44Speaker 4: up and you're like, man, we need to we need
- 8:46Speaker 4: another starter if we want to figure out how to
- 8:48Speaker 4: win a playoff series. And then that might push a
- 8:50Speaker 4: lay Hey to the bullpen. That makes our bullpen stronger.
- 8:53Speaker 4: So if you can get rid of a Stanic and
- 8:56Speaker 4: whatever and a couple of prospects for a you know,
- 9:00Speaker 4: a starter, blah blah blah, and then ladies in the bullpen,
- 9:03Speaker 4: did your bullpen just get better and your rotation got better?
- 9:06Speaker 2: So that's where I'm at.
- 9:07Speaker 4: If you are not going to go for it, then
- 9:11Speaker 4: the one year guys, you flip them and get what
- 9:14Speaker 4: you can for it. But you could also do both
- 9:16Speaker 4: because the one year guys aren't guys that I sit
- 9:18Speaker 4: here and say, hey, they're carrying the team, they're going
- 9:21Speaker 4: to win us a playoff series, blah blah blah. But
- 9:24Speaker 4: what you're seeing in the everyday group is this is
- 9:27Speaker 4: our everyday group, and they're all under twenty five or
- 9:30Speaker 4: twenty six years old, right, So anyone in the minor
- 9:33Speaker 4: leagues that is high up on a prospect board, they
- 9:36Speaker 4: can be flipped for something that can help you now
- 9:39Speaker 4: and maybe you can get a year or two control,
- 9:41Speaker 4: especially on a starting pitcher. So what package do you
- 9:43Speaker 4: put together that's not going to deplete you in the
- 9:46Speaker 4: minor league system, but it's also going to make you
- 9:48Speaker 4: better for the now in the future.
- 9:50Speaker 2: So there's a lot of different ways you can go.
- 9:52Speaker 2: But if he's not.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Going to go to, hey, I'm looking to make a
- 9:56Speaker 4: playoff push and win the playoffs, then.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Don't hold onto those guys. That's what I was saying.
- 10:02Speaker 4: It's like, I don't think he's going to sell the
- 10:03Speaker 4: farm to get what he needs to be a legit
- 10:07Speaker 4: World Series contender, So you have to stay to the course,
- 10:10Speaker 4: and you have to flip the guys that you're planning
- 10:12Speaker 4: on flipping, especially if they have value that gets you
- 10:14Speaker 4: the things that could help you in the future.
- 10:16Speaker 2: So that's where I was.
- 10:16Speaker 3: At, and I don't disagree necessarily with that, right, I don't.
- 10:20Speaker 3: I don't disagree with that premise. I just think if
- 10:24Speaker 3: we'll just say duestimate, right, Okay, Dustin May stays healthy,
- 10:28Speaker 3: has the year that you would love for him to have.
- 10:31Speaker 3: I don't know what his ceiling is. I know he's
- 10:32Speaker 3: had some really good years. Now, he hasn't had full seasons,
- 10:35Speaker 3: but he's had some really good years. If he stays
- 10:37Speaker 3: healthy this year and you believe in his stuff and
- 10:39Speaker 3: believe in who he is, then by all accounts, I
- 10:42Speaker 3: think he likes it here. And if he does, why
- 10:45Speaker 3: not explore an extension instead of explore trading, right? And
- 10:49Speaker 3: then that keeps that rotation solidified, because if you get
- 10:53Speaker 3: to July thirtieth or July twentieth and your fifteen games
- 10:56Speaker 3: over five hundred, my guess is Dustin Maze been pretty
- 10:58Speaker 3: good and he's going to be a guy that's gonna
- 11:01Speaker 3: help that. So that would be my thing when it
- 11:03Speaker 3: comes to trading those guys. The other thing is is
- 11:06Speaker 3: that if we look at Baltimore, I kind of wonder
- 11:10Speaker 3: if at the end of twenty twenty two, Baltimore or
- 11:14Speaker 3: people forget, you know, twenty twenty three, we had a
- 11:16Speaker 3: great season and beat expectations and you know, won the division.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Twenty twenty two, they were the best team in the
- 11:22Speaker 3: American League after the All Star break, had a chance
- 11:25Speaker 3: to do something whatever. Since Adliy Rushmand got called up.
- 11:29Speaker 3: They're the best team in the big leagues. Maybe, And
- 11:31Speaker 3: they didn't trade and didn't give them a chance to
- 11:34Speaker 3: make the playoffs, and they only missed the playoffs by
- 11:35Speaker 3: a few games. Right now, twenty twenty three came along
- 11:38Speaker 3: and they said, okay, now we're one step clos where
- 11:40Speaker 3: we think we're ready. Great, we won the division, we
- 11:43Speaker 3: lost in the first round. Okay, next year they trade
- 11:46Speaker 3: for Corbyn Burns. All right, we're gonna show up the pitching.
- 11:48Speaker 3: They're bringing Corbyn Burns. They didn't win the first first
- 11:52Speaker 3: series of the playoffs. Just because you do that doesn't
- 11:55Speaker 3: mean you're going to win that series.
- 11:57Speaker 5: I understand.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Maybe Corden Burns obviously gave you a better chanceance, but
- 12:01Speaker 3: I don't think putting off the playoffs for a year
- 12:04Speaker 3: guarantees you the ability to win the World Series or
- 12:07Speaker 3: win a series in the playoffs next year. Every chance
- 12:10Speaker 3: you get to make the playoffs, I think you should
- 12:13Speaker 3: take it. And if these players give you that chance,
- 12:16Speaker 3: you should find a way to play for the future.
- 12:18Speaker 3: But give them the chance now, because you just never
- 12:22Speaker 3: know when that playoff run is going to be thwarted
- 12:23Speaker 3: by something random that happens. And winning a series just
- 12:28Speaker 3: by adding a starting pitcher helps, but it's not guaranteed.
- 12:31Speaker 3: And I'm I know I'm talking to the choir here.
- 12:33Speaker 3: I know you agree with that lance, but that would
- 12:35Speaker 3: be my point is that if you're in a spot
- 12:37Speaker 3: to make the playoffs, why why not take that chance
- 12:42Speaker 3: right now?
- 12:47Speaker 4: Like if you're trying to make if you're if you're
- 12:48Speaker 4: trying to actually make the playoffs and make a run,
- 12:52Speaker 4: then you have to change course altogether. That's the That's
- 12:56Speaker 4: the question that will be asked when it comes time.
- 12:59Speaker 4: So it's a wait and see approach right now. But
- 13:02Speaker 4: I think that they've acquired so many prospects they don't
- 13:04Speaker 4: have to trade from their big league roster to get
- 13:06Speaker 4: what they need.
- 13:07Speaker 2: To go for a playoff push.
- 13:10Speaker 4: Now the question is are you going one year guys
- 13:12Speaker 4: or this? I mean, I'm sitting here looking at it.
- 13:14Speaker 4: I was like, if you we all see it and
- 13:16Speaker 4: we all know what playoff rosters and playoff teams look like,
- 13:20Speaker 4: they need two starting pitchers if they want to make
- 13:22Speaker 4: a playoff run. Like in the playoff run expect if
- 13:25Speaker 4: they keep May and they grab two starting pitchers that
- 13:28Speaker 4: this team could be really dangerous.
- 13:30Speaker 2: The question is what will they be willing to give up?
- 13:33Speaker 4: And they're extremely like they've they've got I mean what
- 13:38Speaker 4: they get twenty guys that they've traded the last two
- 13:40Speaker 4: years to get prospects for It feels like there's guys
- 13:43Speaker 4: that are tradeable down there that they will not miss
- 13:47Speaker 4: and that then they can still go for it and
- 13:49Speaker 4: then they can you know, replenish with the draft and
- 13:51Speaker 4: internationally and stuff like that.
- 13:53Speaker 2: So that's my hope is, do not.
- 13:56Speaker 4: Trade away from the big league roster, figure out how
- 13:58Speaker 4: to get what you need and if you're to go
- 13:59Speaker 4: for but I don't know if they're going to do that,
- 14:02Speaker 4: And if you're not going to do that, then you
- 14:04Speaker 4: have to then you have to stay course and.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Don't don't just sit and May.
- 14:08Speaker 4: I mean, if May dominates all the way through the year,
- 14:09Speaker 4: you're gonna have a you're giving a qualifying offer and
- 14:12Speaker 4: you're and you still get that pick. So maybe that's it.
- 14:14Speaker 4: That's that's why you're keep him so that I'm okay. Yeah,
- 14:19Speaker 4: he's got an option here. It's a mutual option. And yeah,
- 14:24Speaker 4: when have they ever been picked up?
- 14:26Speaker 2: Side on no side, both sides never picked him up
- 14:28Speaker 2: in their life.
- 14:29Speaker 5: Nice, try just make you feel good, Jim, that's it.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Yeah, it's yeah.
- 14:33Speaker 4: We're usually a part ways. We're mutually good to part
- 14:35Speaker 4: ways when this is over, because one of us is
- 14:37Speaker 4: going to bail. I don't know what else to do.
- 14:39Speaker 1: He might he might want to be if he has
- 14:41Speaker 1: a monster season like you're suggesting, he may. Maybe he
- 14:44Speaker 1: wants a multi year deal and he's gone.
- 14:46Speaker 4: I'm just so then you then you mutually opt out
- 14:49Speaker 4: so you can try to get him all that year
- 14:50Speaker 4: real but the hit with the qualifying offers.
- 14:53Speaker 2: So that's where it's all gonna go.
- 14:55Speaker 1: So and one other note about time. One other note.
- 14:58Speaker 1: He has said all along that his goal is not
- 15:01Speaker 1: to win one year, it's to build him into a
- 15:04Speaker 1: team that's contending every year like the Cardinals used to.
- 15:08Speaker 2: So what years.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I agree, if there's a window of opportunity, and I
- 15:12Speaker 1: think we all agree in it, you should try to
- 15:14Speaker 1: climb through it. But I think Lance has taken a
- 15:17Speaker 1: different approach to it. But you guys brought up Nolan
- 15:21Speaker 1: Gorman and the Cardinal's head of the padres. I think
- 15:25Speaker 1: Gorman is due for a big series. Let's talk about
- 15:29Speaker 1: Nolan Gormant. He is our fan Duel Daily, Danger Spotlight.
- 15:39Speaker 1: We have a little pre production to work with. I
- 15:41Speaker 1: know you guys are mesburized by that. So Nolan Gormant,
- 15:46Speaker 1: he's twenty five years old, I think in twenty twenty
- 15:48Speaker 1: three at twenty seven homers. I mean, this guy is
- 15:51Speaker 1: a power hitter, still kind of feeling his way through.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Says he feels comfortable. Said the main thing for him
- 15:58Speaker 1: is getting his foot down early. Is he put it early?
- 16:01Speaker 1: Is never early enough. But he feels like he's ready
- 16:04Speaker 1: ready to go on a run. So I'll go to
- 16:07Speaker 1: you k thoughts on Gorman and what he can be.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think Nolan Gorman, you know Lance,
- 16:13Speaker 3: I'm just looking up his last few games here.
- 16:17Speaker 5: Just what he's been.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Nolan Gorman I think was a guy that I have
- 16:21Speaker 3: not been shy about saying this, and the Cardinals fans
- 16:24Speaker 3: that I've talked to here in Washington, Missouri, I believe
- 16:29Speaker 3: Nolan Gorman is a thirty plus homer guy every single year.
- 16:33Speaker 3: It could be, you know, a real difference maker. And
- 16:35Speaker 3: I think if he is that just like if Jordan
- 16:37Speaker 3: Walker stays who he is right now, those two guys
- 16:41Speaker 3: are absolute difference makers. You know, you got Gorman going
- 16:45Speaker 3: into San Diego facing a few righties here, seven sixty
- 16:50Speaker 3: ops over the last seven games, over seven fifty the
- 16:55Speaker 3: last fifteen games, with a few homers. So yeah, I
- 16:58Speaker 3: mean I like him being a guy against a few
- 17:01Speaker 3: rities to take a chance to go deep and pack
- 17:04Speaker 3: out park.
- 17:05Speaker 1: How about you land thoughts on that fellow.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Yeah, there's not a ballpark thaking hold him.
- 17:10Speaker 4: So the question is his big thing from the get
- 17:13Speaker 4: goes are we going to make contact enough to see
- 17:15Speaker 4: the results?
- 17:16Speaker 5: So get the.
- 17:17Speaker 4: Foot down early thing and all that is big for him.
- 17:20Speaker 4: He doesn't have to generate the power that some people
- 17:23Speaker 4: do to drive the ball to the ballpark because he's
- 17:25Speaker 4: got it.
- 17:26Speaker 2: He just has it.
- 17:27Speaker 4: So he just needs to get the ball down and
- 17:28Speaker 4: get the barrel or get the foot down, get the
- 17:30Speaker 4: barrel to the ball, and if he's doing that, he's
- 17:33Speaker 4: capable of driving the ball out of the ballpark to
- 17:35Speaker 4: center and left center as well as anybody. And if
- 17:39Speaker 4: he does that approach kind of similar to what Matt
- 17:42Speaker 4: Holliday was talking about with JJ and his ability to
- 17:46Speaker 4: not be afraid to drive the ball the others way
- 17:48Speaker 4: for power, that's when Gorman goes Hey, that's when he
- 17:51Speaker 4: goes from a two to twenty hitter to a two
- 17:54Speaker 4: point fifty hitter with twenty five to thirty home runs.
- 17:58Speaker 2: And that's when he becomes a damite.
- 18:00Speaker 4: Ballplayer, especially because his defense is way better than anyone
- 18:05Speaker 4: gives him credit for, especially at third base. So his
- 18:08Speaker 4: big thing is, don't have to try to drive the ball.
- 18:11Speaker 4: You drive the ball to left center and then the
- 18:13Speaker 4: accidental or the home runs on pool side come. He
- 18:16Speaker 4: gets himself in trouble when he tries to pull side
- 18:18Speaker 4: homers and then then he's out in front of everything
- 18:21Speaker 4: and the swing and misshappens. So I think to get
- 18:24Speaker 4: the foot down and do all that is his way
- 18:26Speaker 4: of telling him yourself, I'm trying to drive the ball
- 18:28Speaker 4: to the middle of the other way, and I'm naturally
- 18:30Speaker 4: going to pull the ball when it's time. So I
- 18:33Speaker 4: think it could be a huge, huge thing for him
- 18:36Speaker 4: going on in his future is realize that I don't
- 18:38Speaker 4: have to try to pull everything to hit homers. I'm
- 18:39Speaker 4: strong enough and I have the ability to drive balls
- 18:41Speaker 4: out of the ballpark in any ballpark in any direction.
- 18:45Speaker 3: And yeah, get down, Yeah, getting his foot downe I
- 18:48Speaker 3: think is a really interesting queue for him because I
- 18:52Speaker 3: think I might simplify things a little bit, like Lance said,
- 18:55Speaker 3: when his swing is connected, he's a guy that doesn't
- 18:58Speaker 3: really have to swing hard to hit home and not
- 19:01Speaker 3: everybody's like that. You know, obviously he's not Aaron Judge,
- 19:04Speaker 3: but Aaron Judge is a smooth, easy swing. He's so
- 19:07Speaker 3: big and uses his lever so well. Nolan Gormant has
- 19:09Speaker 3: a really sweet, connected swing, so when his foots down
- 19:13Speaker 3: and his timing's on, then he can leverage that swing
- 19:16Speaker 3: in a way that some guys can't, and I think
- 19:19Speaker 3: that gives them the ability to as he grows here,
- 19:21Speaker 3: and I know fans want to see people just like
- 19:24Speaker 3: take off right away. It's just not realistic. For most players.
- 19:28Speaker 3: I want to say, like four per players are never
- 19:30Speaker 3: sent down to the minor leagues. I gu's just it's
- 19:33Speaker 3: a small percentage of guys that figured out right away.
- 19:35Speaker 3: But as he gets more comfortable and keeps playing, he's
- 19:38Speaker 3: gonna figure out. All right, maybe this is my A
- 19:41Speaker 3: swing when I swing really hard, but guess what my
- 19:42Speaker 3: B swing. I know we're tracking swing speed and everything,
- 19:46Speaker 3: but my B swing that's a little slower when I'm
- 19:49Speaker 3: connected and make good contact on my pitch still is
- 19:51Speaker 3: a homer swing. And I think that allows him to
- 19:54Speaker 3: make more contact. And like Lance said, he's that's kind
- 19:57Speaker 3: of been his thing. If he makes contact, he's a
- 19:59Speaker 3: good quality Big leau hitter. And I like the fact
- 20:01Speaker 3: that he's, you know, get his foot down, get your
- 20:03Speaker 3: body on time, and stay connected.
- 20:06Speaker 1: And with orius on the il, as Lance points out,
- 20:09Speaker 1: Gorman has been playing really good defense. He'll get more
- 20:12Speaker 1: at bats. So Gorman is our daily Dinger pick for

- 20:43Speaker 3: Messed the production there, that's my bad. Didn't didn't realize
- 20:46Speaker 3: we had a computer read there. I just are we
- 20:50Speaker 3: keeping track of you know, when we did picks last time,
- 20:53Speaker 3: you know, I mean I think that might be kind
- 20:55Speaker 3: of fun. You know, we will have to add that
- 20:57Speaker 3: into production, into the show, but.
- 21:00Speaker 5: You know, I kind of like it.
- 21:02Speaker 3: Maybe for the weekend. Every Thursday, we pick a guy
- 21:04Speaker 3: for the weekend, you know, keep track of that.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Yeah, that's gonna be our fan duel daily day and Clint,
- 21:11Speaker 1: our producer, will keep track of that. Even though he's
- 21:14Speaker 1: going on vacation for a little while. He's gonna go camping.
- 21:17Speaker 5: He just started. He's going on vacation. Oh my gosh.
- 21:20Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, he just took over for Henry.
- 21:23Speaker 1: He's been working non stop and he does other shows.
- 21:27Speaker 5: That's awesome.
- 21:28Speaker 1: He is awesome. So let's talk about the rotation. So
- 21:33Speaker 1: up until Wednesday's game, the Cardinals over the previous nine games.
- 21:38Speaker 1: That's starting rotation era of two point eight three. Now,
- 21:44Speaker 1: we've talked about it. We've had some guys in the
- 21:46Speaker 1: rotation dealt with injuries, guys who haven't accumulated many big
- 21:51Speaker 1: league innings of one season, Guys making the move from
- 21:54Speaker 1: bullpen to the starting rotation. But so far, so good,
- 21:58Speaker 1: there's been some bumps. Is just sustainable, dude, like what
- 22:02Speaker 1: you're seeing so far.
- 22:04Speaker 4: So I'm gonna preface this on what I said earlier
- 22:07Speaker 4: that they need two more starters to make a playoff
- 22:10Speaker 4: run and do things in a playoffs. And here's why
- 22:13Speaker 4: I say that. It's not because I don't think any
- 22:15Speaker 4: of these guys can do it. I don't think any
- 22:19Speaker 4: of them have done it for one hundred and eighty
- 22:22Speaker 4: innings and into the playoffs. And by me saying that
- 22:27Speaker 4: means most likely, if you're gonna anapolitically look at it
- 22:32Speaker 4: and you're going to bet on it, you do not
- 22:34Speaker 4: bet that they're all going to do that. So they're
- 22:36Speaker 4: going to need help, and you get them help, and
- 22:39Speaker 4: then you can also help rest them as the year
- 22:41Speaker 4: goes on and do the things that you need to
- 22:43Speaker 4: do down the stretch, so everyone's available, say, come end
- 22:47Speaker 4: of the season October, So as is is it sustainable
- 22:52Speaker 4: that the money's on No, because none of them ever
- 22:55Speaker 4: done it. Now, if you're sitting here looking at four
- 22:57Speaker 4: starters that have thrown over one hundred and sixty innings
- 22:59Speaker 4: multiple times in your career, I could say yes, but
- 23:02Speaker 4: you can't say that right now. So that's why I'm
- 23:04Speaker 4: saying it. Do they have the stuff to do it, Yes,
- 23:07Speaker 4: they have the ability to do it. Yes, they have
- 23:08Speaker 4: never shown that they have done it for an extended
- 23:12Speaker 4: an actual full season for one hundred and sixty to
- 23:14Speaker 4: one hundred and eighty innings and in the playoffs. So
- 23:17Speaker 4: if you want to make a playoff, push get them
- 23:18Speaker 4: some help. So you also don't have to abuse them
- 23:21Speaker 4: and push them beyond their limits at the.
- 23:23Speaker 2: End of the year when they might be running.
- 23:25Speaker 4: Out of gas, and then you keep something in the
- 23:27Speaker 4: gas stank for them as the year goes along with
- 23:30Speaker 4: a little bit of help. So that's where I'm going
- 23:32Speaker 4: to say that can they do it, yes, but the
- 23:34Speaker 4: money is on no, not being sustainable because they've never
- 23:36Speaker 4: done it.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Good points, Tom, Yeah, I think that those are all
- 23:45Speaker 3: good points. I think the one thing that people are
- 23:47Speaker 3: pointing at right now is a strikeout rate. I hear it,
- 23:51Speaker 3: I understand it. But as a pitcher who my entire
- 23:56Speaker 3: career didn't have a high strikeout rate, you know, yeah, yeah,
- 24:03Speaker 3: I mean I guess, I guess that probably kept me
- 24:06Speaker 3: from being the impact arm that people would trade for
- 24:09Speaker 3: and sign to help with the rotation at the playoffs. Right,
- 24:12Speaker 3: But when you build a team like they've built it,
- 24:15Speaker 3: it allowed a guy like me to have success in
- 24:17Speaker 3: Saint Louis with a good defense playing behind me. And
- 24:20Speaker 3: that's what this team has. And on top of that,
- 24:23Speaker 3: it's not like they have flyball pitchers who are giving
- 24:26Speaker 3: up the contact. All these guys, for the most part,
- 24:28Speaker 3: keepable on the ground. So I like that part of this,
- 24:32Speaker 3: whereas we have ground ball pitchers with an elite infield defense.
- 24:37Speaker 3: I don't know if we're ready to say that three
- 24:38Speaker 3: lead infield defense. I'm saying that you got fall three positions, third, short,
- 24:42Speaker 3: and second, and I'm putting Burly in there because the
- 24:44Speaker 3: kid can play defense at first. All four infielders are
- 24:47Speaker 3: really above average, really good defenders. So not as many
- 24:51Speaker 3: strike cuts. Okay, you're gonna have some unlucky games here
- 24:53Speaker 3: with hits, But I'm okay with it. The thing that
- 24:57Speaker 3: I want to point out about this rotation, and I
- 25:00Speaker 3: think as they get going through the year, games like
- 25:03Speaker 3: yesterday are going to really show up either as an
- 25:07Speaker 3: Achilles heel or as it was yesterday, as a strength. Okay,
- 25:12Speaker 3: Andre Plonte in that locker room, we talked about this
- 25:14Speaker 3: maybe last week. Andre Polonte to the fans, did not
- 25:18Speaker 3: get a pad on the back for yesterday. Andrea Plante
- 25:21Speaker 3: in that locker room got a huge pad on the
- 25:23Speaker 3: back yesterday. Right, four runs in the first inning, and
- 25:26Speaker 3: you look up and the kid goes six innings. Four runs,
- 25:31Speaker 3: might have given up one extra a fifth run, I
- 25:33Speaker 3: think six innings, And if the bullpen has a good
- 25:37Speaker 3: series in San Diego, everybody can thank Andre Polante for that.
- 25:42Speaker 5: All right, Yeah, the rain delay of.
- 25:44Speaker 3: The postponeman on Tuesday game with another break, but you
- 25:46Speaker 3: got six or seven guys in the bullpen that haven't
- 25:49Speaker 3: thrown since Sunday maybe right now, and Andre Polonte throwing
- 25:53Speaker 3: six innings. I just want to give him a lot
- 25:54Speaker 3: of credit for that. A couple of years ago. Lance,
- 25:57Speaker 3: I don't know if that's how that start would have
- 25:59Speaker 3: worked out. He's grown up. He has really matured. And
- 26:03Speaker 3: to get six innings after giving up four in the
- 26:05Speaker 3: first hats off to you, Andre Polante because that bullpen
- 26:07Speaker 3: is fresh today because you decided to turn the page
- 26:10Speaker 3: and go get five more innings and really really set
- 26:14Speaker 3: this team up for a big series at San Diego
- 26:16Speaker 3: and have a fresh bullpen.
- 26:19Speaker 1: He has matured. I mean, he's a different guy. Things
- 26:22Speaker 1: used to affect him on the mound when Polante seems
- 26:25Speaker 1: able now to kind of move on and compartmentalize that lance.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Yeah, and that's part of the growth, right. Everyone looks
- 26:32Speaker 4: at the year that he had with us when he
- 26:34Speaker 4: went down to the minor leagues and he came back had
- 26:36Speaker 4: success last year. The things that he did the year
- 26:39Speaker 4: before to have success didn't quite work as well, and
- 26:41Speaker 4: then he had to mix and match and do those things.
- 26:43Speaker 4: So he's had the ups and downs in their rotation
- 26:46Speaker 4: and in his career to where he's preparing himself to
- 26:49Speaker 4: be one of those guys.
- 26:51Speaker 2: And then you look.
- 26:51Speaker 4: At yesterday, right, as Kyle mentioned, the ability when you
- 26:55Speaker 4: look up to not have a reliever in that game
- 26:59Speaker 4: before the fifth end, after giving up.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Four or even earlier than that.
- 27:02Speaker 4: When you look at giving up four in the first
- 27:04Speaker 4: most people are like, oh, he's pray get a valid
- 27:06Speaker 4: game on a third, right, So to look up and say, hey,
- 27:09Speaker 4: six doing all that, that is the that's the Those
- 27:13Speaker 4: are the salvageable days, right, He's salvaged a day that
- 27:16Speaker 4: he you know, didn't go the way he wanted to.
- 27:18Speaker 4: But you learn to salvage those days and then that
- 27:21Speaker 4: makes you the person that you want to be in
- 27:25Speaker 4: the clubhouse, It's no matter what I'm giving it, No,
- 27:28Speaker 4: I'm giving everything I got. I'm getting through six. Even
- 27:31Speaker 4: if I get hit around earlier and do the things early.
- 27:33Speaker 4: I'm gonna make my adjustments. I'm gonna do those things
- 27:36Speaker 4: and I'm gonna make pitches and I'm not going to
- 27:37Speaker 4: give up. And so that's a you know, like God,
- 27:40Speaker 4: So that's a huge pad on pad on the back
- 27:42Speaker 4: for him, and that's that's huge for the team because
- 27:44Speaker 4: that shows everybody. It's like, hey, just because I don't
- 27:46Speaker 4: have it early doesn't mean I can't I can't be productive.
- 27:49Speaker 4: You know, you get through that game with six innings
- 27:52Speaker 4: of four runs, that damn near quality. And with this offense,
- 27:55Speaker 4: you're looking at hey, you might, you might figure out
- 27:57Speaker 4: how to win some games like that. I've I've won
- 27:59Speaker 4: quite a few games in my career where I given
- 28:01Speaker 4: up three year early or four early, and next thing,
- 28:03Speaker 4: you know, I outlasted the other guy who came out
- 28:06Speaker 4: of the game but only gave up one or two
- 28:08Speaker 4: and then I got in there and stayed long enough
- 28:10Speaker 4: to get a win. That's how you collect wins, and
- 28:13Speaker 4: that's how you get respect from your teammates, and those
- 28:16Speaker 4: guys keep playing for you because they know you're not
- 28:18Speaker 4: going to give up.
- 28:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I think a couple of years ago, a couple
- 28:21Speaker 3: of years ago, he'd have been in the dugout, still
- 28:24Speaker 3: beating himself up in the fourth inning about the first inning,
- 28:27Speaker 3: and I know he's hard on himself, so maybe he
- 28:29Speaker 3: was still thinking about it. But a couple of years ago,
- 28:32Speaker 3: I really think that that first inning would have stuck
- 28:33Speaker 3: with him until the third, fourth, fifth inning. And I
- 28:36Speaker 3: think that's really what I doed him in so you know,
- 28:39Speaker 3: I know he gave it all up with two outs,
- 28:41Speaker 3: He got two quick outs and then you know, hit
- 28:43Speaker 3: some struggles there in the first but really good job
- 28:46Speaker 3: by him.
- 28:48Speaker 1: So one of the things they're saying about Andre is
- 28:51Speaker 1: they want him to be less predictable, and that means
- 28:54Speaker 1: with showing different stuff early, even if you're not thrown
- 28:57Speaker 1: up for strikes, just so they see it, because that
- 28:59Speaker 1: could lead to strikeouts later when you're facing the same
- 29:02Speaker 1: line of second or third time. But if you look
- 29:05Speaker 1: at his numbers, and this is curious to me, and
- 29:08Speaker 1: this was interested in asking you guys about, I'll start
- 29:11Speaker 1: with you on this, Lance. Andre has an e RA
- 29:15Speaker 1: of six at the first inning. This hasn't been something
- 29:19Speaker 1: new the first inning. Sometimes it's choppy for him more
- 29:22Speaker 1: so than other innings. So how do you fix something
- 29:25Speaker 1: like that, Lance, if that's an issue?
- 29:28Speaker 4: So I had similar issues at times in my career,
- 29:32Speaker 4: and I'm the most predictable motherfucker that ever thrown a
- 29:34Speaker 4: baseball in the major leagues, almost besides Mariano Rivera. Right,
- 29:38Speaker 4: So yes, there's.
- 29:40Speaker 5: Yeah, Lee, jeez, what am I wrong? I mean, for
- 29:43Speaker 5: the first one of the.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Day, For the first one of the day, you went
- 29:46Speaker 3: really firm with that, Joah Leah went.
- 29:49Speaker 2: We went this. We didn't get any in last week.
- 29:52Speaker 2: We didn't get any in last week.
- 29:54Speaker 5: All right, go ahead. Sorry, But that being.
- 29:58Speaker 4: Said, it's there if you want to be less predictable
- 30:01Speaker 4: and stuff like that. Sometimes you get yourself in bad
- 30:03Speaker 4: counts and do all that in the first inning trying
- 30:06Speaker 4: not to try and to do the things that they
- 30:08Speaker 4: need you to do.
- 30:09Speaker 2: So he's got to find a.
- 30:10Speaker 4: Way to go from his bullpen warm ups because we
- 30:15Speaker 4: have seen it in the past where maybe he had
- 30:17Speaker 4: a maybe you have a shitty warm up, right, a
- 30:21Speaker 4: shitty bullpen to start the game, and then you go
- 30:23Speaker 4: you carry that into the first inning or this is
- 30:25Speaker 4: not working and then you're like, oh, I need to
- 30:26Speaker 4: use it in the first inning. It's like, hey, what
- 30:28Speaker 4: do I have to start the game with? How can
- 30:30Speaker 4: I get these hitters out with it? And then how
- 30:32Speaker 4: do I incorporate the things and find a feel for
- 30:34Speaker 4: things as the game goes on. So for me, what
- 30:37Speaker 4: I started doing after my bullpens pregame, I went and
- 30:40Speaker 4: you go change your undershirt, change your jersey, kind of regroup, reassess,
- 30:45Speaker 4: know that nothing that you did in the bullpen really
- 30:47Speaker 4: matters because there's no one in the box and there
- 30:49Speaker 4: was no score cap, no counts kept. So then go
- 30:52Speaker 4: figure out how how am I going to get three
- 30:54Speaker 4: outs as quick as possible in the first inning, what
- 30:57Speaker 4: do I have to do that? And then as a
- 30:58Speaker 4: game goes on, you start getting a feel for some
- 31:00Speaker 4: other things, and then you're able to incorporate those things.
- 31:02Speaker 4: So sometimes when you go your game plan right, your
- 31:07Speaker 4: game plan to start the game might change because of
- 31:09Speaker 4: how crappy your bullpen is or how good it is
- 31:12Speaker 4: right and then but also it shouldn't because you know
- 31:15Speaker 4: what your bread and butter are. Plante knows what bread
- 31:17Speaker 4: and butter, get those ready to go to the game,
- 31:19Speaker 4: and then mix and match as you go and actually
- 31:21Speaker 4: get feel for stuff. So there's a fine line, right,
- 31:24Speaker 4: You got to be who you are, but you also
- 31:26Speaker 4: have to know what you have each day and then
- 31:28Speaker 4: figure out how to add on to what you start
- 31:30Speaker 4: the game with.
- 31:31Speaker 2: And those are the.
- 31:32Speaker 4: Things that will come the more you understand that. Instead
- 31:34Speaker 4: of saying, oh, well, the paper said I need to
- 31:37Speaker 4: throw this guy this pitch. But if it wasn't worth
- 31:39Speaker 4: a crab all bullpen and all this, like you might
- 31:43Speaker 4: it might just you might have just wasted a pitch
- 31:45Speaker 4: and got yourself into a worse count. But they're expecting
- 31:48Speaker 4: you throw something different too at times, so hey, maybe
- 31:51Speaker 4: be non predictable by being predictable, throwing more heaters because
- 31:56Speaker 4: they're looking for a breaking ball, because you're supposed to
- 31:58Speaker 4: throw them a breaking ball. So all these analytic people
- 32:01Speaker 4: need to realize it. Sometimes you got to know what
- 32:03Speaker 4: you have that day and go figure out how to
- 32:05Speaker 4: get those outs with it, and then other things come
- 32:07Speaker 4: as a game goes on.
- 32:10Speaker 5: That was a really good five minutes for the show.
- 32:12Speaker 5: I love that. That was good.
- 32:13Speaker 3: We got three cuss words in a in a be
- 32:15Speaker 3: predictable by being unpredictable, the other way around, be unpredictable
- 32:18Speaker 3: by being predictable.
- 32:18Speaker 5: I love it.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Yeah, well it was a great Go ahead, go ahead, ma,
- 32:23Speaker 1: let's finish up.
- 32:24Speaker 2: I'm good.
- 32:25Speaker 5: I'm good. You don't want to have one because.
- 32:28Speaker 2: All these people telling you how to pitch it never
- 32:30Speaker 2: thrown a damn ball in their life.
- 32:31Speaker 1: I love it. I love it. I love it so bad.
- 32:38Speaker 4: Someone you haven't talked to, someone who's done it, but
- 32:41Speaker 4: he has nobody to do that with. It's tough, man,
- 32:43Speaker 4: It's tough to figure it out. You have no one
- 32:45Speaker 4: to bounce them off.
- 32:47Speaker 1: I love it. Look, we had a great show today.
- 32:50Speaker 1: We started with a wholesome family stuff and puppies and
- 32:54Speaker 1: we uh we finished with a lot of foul language,
- 32:56Speaker 1: So kudos to you guys. And that's gonna do it
- 32:59Speaker 1: for this differant Cardinal territory. We'll see you next time.
- 33:02Speaker 1: Hopefully that episode won't suck.
- 33:07Speaker 2: M
