Speaker 1: Welcome to Dirty Rush The Truth about Sorority Life with
• 0:04
Speaker 1: your hosts me Gia Judice, Daisy Kent, and Jennifer Kessler. Hey, guys,
• 0:12
Speaker 1: and welcome back to another week of Dirty Rush. Rush
• 0:16
Speaker 1: is going around all over the country, so we want
• 0:20
Speaker 1: to tell you, guys what goes in to the preparation
• 0:24
Speaker 1: of rush before it begins. Candace is going to tell
• 0:28
Speaker 1: us about the pre rush process. She is starting rush tomorrow,
• 0:33
Speaker 1: so she is going to tell us about all the
• 0:36
Speaker 1: preparation that she's been doing to get ready to bring
• 0:39
Speaker 1: in these p and ms.
• 0:42
Speaker 2: Hi. So, I'm on exec in my sorority at Berkeley.
• 0:48
Speaker 3: So we've been here for the last eight days.
• 0:51
Speaker 2: We move in one day earlier than the rest of
• 0:53
Speaker 2: the members of my sorority, and basically we run through
• 0:57
Speaker 2: every single day of sorority recruitment.
• 1:00
Speaker 3: So we have like the first two days that we.
• 1:02
Speaker 2: Call unity, the second day which is the Sisterhood Round.
• 1:06
Speaker 3: There's philanthropy, pref all that type of stuff. Yes, in
• 1:10
Speaker 3: the past eight days.
• 1:12
Speaker 2: It's basically been like a nine to five job teaching
• 1:15
Speaker 2: all of our new members the rituals for each round
• 1:19
Speaker 2: and kind of how it works, teaching them about bump groups.
• 1:22
Speaker 1: Oh my god, bump groups brings me back. I literally
• 1:27
Speaker 1: wrote it on my hand, like my name, my my,
• 1:32
Speaker 1: like my group's name, and I would cross out like
• 1:35
Speaker 1: each name, and then I would be like, okay, So
• 1:38
Speaker 1: I you would associate yourself by number? Is that how
• 1:41
Speaker 1: you guys do it? Like for your bump group? Okay,
• 1:44
Speaker 1: by letter? So we did it by number. So it
• 1:47
Speaker 1: was like one, two, three, Typically, like what there's three
• 1:51
Speaker 1: or four people to a bump bump group mm hm,
• 1:55
Speaker 1: And so it would be like, okay, Gia, you're after Mikaela,
• 1:59
Speaker 1: and then there's Avery and then okay, then one is
• 2:02
Speaker 1: going to bump three and then now three is going
• 2:04
Speaker 1: to bump two. And I would I would just they
• 2:08
Speaker 1: would look at me and I'd be like, okay, it's
• 2:10
Speaker 1: my time to go out.
• 2:12
  Speaker 3: Goshion locations.
• 2:13
Speaker 2: It's like blue couch by left door behind, compose it outside,
• 2:18
Speaker 2: So you have to remember every single part and you
• 2:21
Speaker 2: mess it up, like you might be stuck talking to
• 2:24
Speaker 2: the same girl for the entire forty minute round. So
• 2:28
Speaker 2: hopefully it all goes to plant. But it's basically been
• 2:30
Speaker 2: a nine to five job for the last seven days.
• 2:33
Speaker 1: Of course, and then I feel like you could also,
• 2:36
Speaker 1: you know, rely on the other people in your group
• 2:40
Speaker 1: to kind of help you out and to kind of
• 2:42
Speaker 1: guide you. But I love the hand system. You just
• 2:46
Speaker 1: write a little write some stump on your hand.
• 2:49
Speaker 3: Gosh, I like I would sweat it off. I would
• 2:52
Speaker 3: nearly be dripping down my arm. I'd be sweating it off.
• 2:55
Speaker 2: I get so nervous with that type of stuff. It's
• 2:58
Speaker 2: just like no internal dialogue and.
• 3:00
Speaker 1: Art, even like reminders on your phone, like okay, now go.
• 3:04
Speaker 2: To hear and but they actually take away our phones
• 3:07
Speaker 2: during recruitment, so you, like, if you wanted to sneak
• 3:12
Speaker 2: your phone like in like the shorts that you're wearing
• 3:14
Speaker 2: under your dress, like that would be a major no no.
• 3:17
Speaker 2: So they make us like leave our phones in like
• 3:19
Speaker 2: a basket in the kitchen, so you read the sheet
• 3:22
Speaker 2: once of where you need to be and the girl
• 3:24
Speaker 2: that you're talking to, and then you better remember it
• 3:27
Speaker 2: or else you're gonna mass them. Yeah.
• 3:29
Speaker 1: Well, I don't remember if we got our phones taken away.
• 3:34
  Speaker 1: That's crazy. I don't remember.
• 3:38
Speaker 3: So your phoneless the entire day for all of the rounds.
• 3:42
Speaker 3: So hopefully you get to catch up with.
• 3:44
Speaker 2: Everyone afterwards, but you, yeah, there's no time in between.
• 3:47
Speaker 1: I feel like the biggest thing is getting those bump
• 3:51
  Speaker 1: groups down, Oh.
• 3:52
  Speaker 3: My gosh, seriously.
• 3:53
Speaker 2: And then I feel like the people who are crafting
• 3:56
Speaker 2: these bump groups, it is so meticulous. It's like you
• 3:59
Speaker 2: want this, say, you can't have the same type of
• 4:02
Speaker 2: personality in the same group. You don't want the same grade. Coincidentally,
• 4:06
Speaker 2: like one of the people in my bunk group is
• 4:07
Speaker 2: from my same hometown, which was absolutely no. No, Yeah,
• 4:12
Speaker 2: it's the different personalities, the different locations, different majors, all
• 4:16
Speaker 2: that type of stuff.
• 4:17
Speaker 1: Because you're supposed to go into it kind of blind,
• 4:20
Speaker 1: and especially going to Rutgers and being from New Jersey,
• 4:23
Speaker 1: Rutgers is uh big ten in Jersey, so everyone knew everyone,
• 4:30
Speaker 1: so it was so difficult. There were some of my
• 4:33
Speaker 1: best friends in my sorority that were from my hometown.
• 4:36
Speaker 1: And then you just have the surrounding towns from my
• 4:39
Speaker 1: town that also went to Rutgers, Like Rutgers was flooded
• 4:44
Speaker 1: with people from my town Fairfield, East, Hanover, so many
• 4:48
Speaker 1: surrounding towns that were near my town, and you just
• 4:53
Speaker 1: hear of familiar faces and people and this one knows
• 4:56
Speaker 1: this one, so like small world, everyone knows everyone, and
• 5:02
Speaker 1: it was super difficult. I give whoever does those bump
• 5:06
Speaker 1: groups a lot of credit seriously.
• 5:09
  Speaker 2: And then as a P and M, when you're going
• 5:11
Speaker 2: into a house, if you know someone from your hometown,
• 5:14
  Speaker 2: it's that.
• 5:14
Speaker 3: Whole thing of like do I acknowledge that I know them?
• 5:17
Speaker 3: Am I not supposed to acknowledge that I know them?
• 5:19
Speaker 3: What if I have to talk to them? Am I
• 5:21
  Speaker 3: supposed to?
• 5:21
Speaker 2: Because I feel like I'm saying, like, oh, that person's
• 5:25
  Speaker 2: from my hometown.
• 5:26
Speaker 1: There is And then if you know this person, you
• 5:30
Speaker 1: also have to monitor what you're saying to them because
• 5:33
Speaker 1: during rush, you know, you're not allowed to talk about
• 5:36
Speaker 1: going out and social life and boys, and it's so
• 5:40
Speaker 1: difficult when you're standing there and you know the person
• 5:43
Speaker 1: and you're gonna be like, so, how's your chem class going?
• 5:47
Speaker 1: When it's like, you know, you're already on such a
• 5:50
Speaker 1: different level where you're almost like you almost get like,
• 5:55
  Speaker 1: I don't know, I feel like when that happened, you're
• 5:57
Speaker 1: almost like, Okay, screw the questions like how how is
• 6:02
Speaker 1: the mixer yesterday? Like are you enjoying your freshman year?
• 6:06
Speaker 3: Yes? If they're chilled. Definitely.
• 6:08
Speaker 2: I can't imagine having the same traditional conversation with someone
• 6:11
  Speaker 2: you already know.
• 6:11
Speaker 3: But because cal is largely in state.
• 6:15
Speaker 2: I mean, obviously we have international out of state, but
• 6:19
Speaker 2: people are from California, so you're going to know people,
• 6:22
Speaker 2: and it's just that whole thing of like do I
• 6:24
Speaker 2: acknowledge that I know you? Or do I acknowledge that
• 6:26
Speaker 2: I know your friend? And then you risk giving that
• 6:29
Speaker 2: member like a weird vibe that like you know someone here,
• 6:32
Speaker 2: so you think you might.
• 6:33
Speaker 1: Belong well one hundred percent, because then when you also
• 6:36
Speaker 1: get into things like that, you don't want to give
• 6:38
Speaker 1: the potential new members false hope, and then that's when
• 6:43
Speaker 1: it gets very difficult and tricky.
• 6:45
Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like there's just been all of these
• 6:47
Speaker 2: crazy rules that we've been having to.
• 6:49
Speaker 3: Remind all of our new members.
• 6:51
Speaker 2: As they go through this work week, of like you
• 6:54
Speaker 2: can't let them take anything out of the house. You
• 6:57
Speaker 2: can't let them take a napkin, even if they you like,
• 7:00
Speaker 2: everything has to stay in because it's we would get
• 7:03
Speaker 2: such a large fine for it, so you can't really
• 7:06
  Speaker 2: do anything.
• 7:08
Speaker 1: No, definitely, I completely agree. Do you want to talk
• 7:11
Speaker 1: about maybe each day? Sure, because I feel like the
• 7:15
Speaker 1: bump groups, no matter like, the bump groups are the
• 7:18
Speaker 1: most important part. I feel like to preparing the newest
• 7:22
Speaker 1: class is typically responsible, but sometimes I feel like I
• 7:27
Speaker 1: did it my junior year as well, and I want
• 7:29
Speaker 1: to say even my senior year.
• 7:32
Speaker 2: Yes, so pretty much all of our active members participate
• 7:36
  Speaker 2: in RUSH.
• 7:36
Speaker 3: Yeah, they're mixed in evenly.
• 7:39
Speaker 2: So for the last seven days we've been going through
• 7:42
Speaker 2: how to bump correctly. We've been going through run throughs
• 7:44
Speaker 2: of each day. So typically on the first two days
• 7:48
Speaker 2: or the days where the PI ANDISS get to talk
• 7:50
Speaker 2: to the most amount of girls.
• 7:52
Speaker 1: That's like the biggest speed dating day. I feel what
• 7:55
Speaker 1: is it? It's like, is it five minute rounds?
• 7:58
Speaker 2: So the entire round I believe is thirty five minutes,
• 8:01
Speaker 2: But you're talking to four girls and you need time.
• 8:04
Speaker 3: You need a lot of time to come into the house,
• 8:07
  Speaker 3: for the.
• 8:07
Speaker 2: Girls to do the chant or whatever, and time for
• 8:09
Speaker 2: them to leave because of your late PhD will find you.
• 8:13
Speaker 3: So it's like drill sergeant day by day.
• 8:16
Speaker 2: And so for the last seven days we've spent spending
• 8:19
Speaker 2: the entire day going through each party. So like we'll
• 8:22
Speaker 2: do a unity, we'll do a Sisterhood day, will do
• 8:25
Speaker 2: a Filo day, We'll do preth and we just repeat
• 8:27
Speaker 2: those over and over and over, and it's almost like
• 8:30
Speaker 2: drill Sergeant, our VP of recruitment. She's awesome, but she
• 8:34
Speaker 2: definitely has to be stern and strict. But also I
• 8:37
Speaker 2: feel like, because recruitment is about to start, obviously, the
• 8:42
Speaker 2: dry period is upon us, and so I feel like
• 8:44
Speaker 2: everyone was really eager to go out every night and
• 8:47
Speaker 2: be active in the social scene before they could no longer,
• 8:50
Speaker 2: and so like a lot of people are showing up
• 8:53
Speaker 2: a little bit hungover, but at least they're having a
• 8:56
  Speaker 2: good time.
• 8:57
Speaker 1: No, definitely, because then while recruitment is going on, nobody
• 9:02
Speaker 1: can go out, nobody can drink, and then that's a
• 9:06
Speaker 1: big risk for even your potential new members because while
• 9:09
Speaker 1: they're going through the rush process, they also need to
• 9:12
Speaker 1: participate in dry week as well as members that are
• 9:16
Speaker 1: already in sororities. So it's pretty dry on campus, I
• 9:20
Speaker 1: feel like for that week, or for at least whoever
• 9:23
  Speaker 1: participates in Greek.
• 9:24
Speaker 2: Life seriously, And I feel like even if you were
• 9:28
Speaker 2: to drop something off at your boyfriend's house, if you
• 9:30
Speaker 2: lived at a frat, if someone got a picture of you,
• 9:33
Speaker 2: you would be totally done for. I feel like everyone's
• 9:35
Speaker 2: super strict about that and they want to hold other sororities.
• 9:38
  Speaker 3: To the rule.
• 9:39
Speaker 2: So I feel like you're always looking over your shoulder
• 9:40
Speaker 2: being like I really hope no one sees me, or
• 9:43
Speaker 2: like no one takes this out of context.
• 9:45
Speaker 1: No, one hundred percent, one hundred percent. There definitely is
• 9:49
Speaker 1: a lot that goes into it, and the people on
• 9:51
Speaker 1: the back end, especially exec who are really deep diving
• 9:56
Speaker 1: planning each day, making sure everything is coordinated. It's a
• 10:00
  Speaker 1: lot of pressure.
• 10:02
Speaker 2: Seriously, I feel like all of our exec has been
• 10:05
Speaker 2: working all summer to get this all prepped, especially like
• 10:08
Speaker 2: our VP of Recruitment and so she is living and
• 10:12
Speaker 2: breathing recruitment, and even our house manager, like we have
• 10:17
Speaker 2: a whole day dedicated to scrubbing the walls with like
• 10:20
Speaker 2: mister clean magic erasers get rid of discusss, to like
• 10:24
Speaker 2: mow the lawn to get rid of the leave this.
• 10:27
Speaker 2: I feel like there's so much more preparation than just
• 10:30
Speaker 2: memorizing party flows. You have to clean up your house,
• 10:33
Speaker 2: You have to check everyone's room to make sure they
• 10:36
Speaker 2: look acceptable and clean.
• 10:38
Speaker 3: There's just so many things that we all.
• 10:40
Speaker 1: And there's the house tours and everything.
• 10:44
Speaker 2: Yes, teaching the new members who haven't done the house
• 10:47
Speaker 2: tours what rooms to show, what rooms not to show.
• 10:50
Speaker 2: Definitely don't take them by the bathrooms that they don't
• 10:52
Speaker 2: need to see, the laundry room, like yeah, if you
• 10:54
Speaker 2: wouldn't even think about.
• 10:56
Speaker 3: So there's definitely a lot of preparation that we've been doing.
• 11:13
Speaker 1: Do you kind of want to walk through each day
• 11:15
Speaker 1: and kind of just explain what each day looks like
• 11:19
Speaker 1: during the recruit during recruitment, Yes, and then kind of
• 11:24
Speaker 1: like explain like what preparation is like mainly instilled for
• 11:29
  Speaker 1: each day.
• 11:31
  Speaker 3: Yes.
• 11:32
Speaker 2: So the way that Berkeley does recruitment is our first
• 11:36
Speaker 2: day of recruitment is on the first day of.
• 11:38
Speaker 3: Classes, which is today.
• 11:40
Speaker 2: So today the p and ms are meeting with their rocas,
• 11:44
Speaker 2: meeting the rest of their group, kind of getting acclimated,
• 11:46
Speaker 2: but they're not actually visiting any of the houses. That
• 11:49
Speaker 2: happens tomorrow and the next day, which is called the
• 11:52
Speaker 2: Unity Round. So the Unity Round, the way that Berkeley
• 11:55
Speaker 2: does it is they get to go to every single house.
• 11:57
Speaker 2: It's split up over two days because they believe we
• 11:59
Speaker 2: have about thirteen houses.
• 12:02
Speaker 1: I think Rockers had about the same.
• 12:04
Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's about thirty five minute parties. Every girl
• 12:07
Speaker 2: has to go into every single house. You're talking to
• 12:10
Speaker 2: about four girls. It's very, very quick. It's the speed
• 12:13
Speaker 2: dating round. After each round, each collegiate will go and
• 12:18
Speaker 2: vote on their P and M on an online platform,
• 12:21
Speaker 2: and then it's just round after round after round. So
• 12:23
Speaker 2: after those first two days of Unity days, we'll get
• 12:28
Speaker 2: callbacks for Sisterhood round, so that round is only one day.
• 12:32
Speaker 2: I feel like most p and ms go to six
• 12:36
  Speaker 2: or eight houses.
• 12:37
Speaker 3: That's like the maxim that you can get. And that
• 12:39
Speaker 3: is the day that.
• 12:40
Speaker 2: We do our house tours. So you're mostly talking to
• 12:43
Speaker 2: two girls on this day, much longer conversations. They're getting
• 12:46
Speaker 2: to know you better, You're getting to know our house
• 12:50
Speaker 2: kind of, how our sisterhood is in general, how strong
• 12:52
Speaker 2: it is. And then after all of those rounds, we're
• 12:55
Speaker 2: voting as well. So then callbacks for the third day,
• 12:58
Speaker 2: our philanthropy round. As each round goes on and on,
• 13:02
Speaker 2: they get longer and longer and you're having more personable, personalized,
• 13:07
Speaker 2: intimate conversations with the P and M. It's not as
• 13:10
  Speaker 2: dating as Unity.
• 13:12
Speaker 1: Exactly, and as each round goes on, if you are
• 13:17
Speaker 1: forming a connection with this person, let's just say that
• 13:22
Speaker 1: you have talked to now since day one. So then
• 13:26
Speaker 1: PREF round is the last round where you will talk
• 13:29
Speaker 1: to this girl for forty five minutes, and this is
• 13:32
Speaker 1: like your time to shine, Like you have to seal
• 13:37
Speaker 1: the deal on getting this girl during that round because
• 13:41
Speaker 1: she's either going to pick your sorority or another one,
• 13:46
Speaker 1: or she could suicide bid, which is obviously really scary
• 13:49
Speaker 1: because the sorority also needs to want you to So
• 13:53
Speaker 1: during that whole thing, the last round, Philanthropy round is
• 13:58
Speaker 1: really the round where you are trying to grab the
• 14:01
Speaker 1: girls that you want.
• 14:03
Speaker 2: Yes, And there is such a steep drop off from
• 14:06
Speaker 2: Philanthropy to PREF night you have to basically cut the girls.
• 14:11
Speaker 3: That you have returning in half, if not more. And
• 14:14
  Speaker 3: so the.
• 14:15
Speaker 2: Girls coming back on preth we are assuming we one
• 14:18
Speaker 2: hundred percent want them. If you're back on PREF, it's
• 14:21
Speaker 2: because we want you and we're trying to gauge if
• 14:23
Speaker 2: you want us. And then on preth you're talking to
• 14:26
  Speaker 2: a girl you've talked to.
• 14:27
Speaker 3: In a different round.
• 14:27
Speaker 2: It's very very rare that you would ever be preffed
• 14:30
Speaker 2: by somebody who hadn't talked to in an earlier round,
• 14:33
Speaker 2: So that also goes into matching. So after you vote
• 14:36
Speaker 2: on a P and M, you can write in your notes, Hey,
• 14:38
Speaker 2: I think she would do great with blah blah blah.
• 14:41
Speaker 2: So it's never a coincidence after those first few rounds
• 14:44
Speaker 2: who you talk to, because we're actively thinking about who
• 14:47
Speaker 2: as a sister you would be compatible with and who
• 14:50
Speaker 2: could get you to join the house. So after PREF,
• 14:53
Speaker 2: I mean pretty much all the rules are out the window.
• 14:57
Speaker 2: It depends sorority by sorority, but the way that my
• 14:59
Speaker 2: sorority does is no questions off the table. Obviously, there's
• 15:02
Speaker 2: things that you're told to avoid during the other rounds
• 15:06
Speaker 2: of recruitment. You're not supposed to talk about boys, you're
• 15:08
Speaker 2: not supposed to talk about parties, you're not supposed to
• 15:10
Speaker 2: talk about politics, all the things people tell you not
• 15:12
Speaker 2: to talk about. But I feel like on PREF you
• 15:15
Speaker 2: want them to have a transparent view of what the
• 15:17
Speaker 2: sorority is and actually know what they're getting into, and
• 15:21
Speaker 2: so if it's really not for them, then they don't join,
• 15:23
Speaker 2: and they end up joining the house. That's better for them.
• 15:26
Speaker 2: And like the way that Berkeley PHC talks about suicide
• 15:31
Speaker 2: bidding is like it should never ever ever happen because
• 15:35
Speaker 2: I believe it moves you down lower on the house's list,
• 15:38
Speaker 2: so they could still want you, but for some reason
• 15:41
Speaker 2: it interferes because you didn't rank both houses.

Speaker 3: So we always tell people like, even if.
• 15:46
Speaker 2: You know you want this one house and you really
• 15:48
Speaker 2: really don't want the other one, to still rank the
• 15:51
Speaker 2: second house second, because it helps your chances of getting
• 15:54
Speaker 2: into the house that you want to be in.
• 15:56
Speaker 3: But I'm not sure if it's that way everywhere.
• 15:58
Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean does not recommend it either to suicide bid,
• 16:03
Speaker 1: but I don't think I've ever heard that, which is interesting.
• 16:06
Speaker 1: But then I mean, that makes total sense because sometimes
• 16:09
Speaker 1: people who suicide bid and then don't get the sorority
• 16:12
Speaker 1: they want, and then later on find out that the
• 16:13
Speaker 1: sorority actually did want them, but then something got messed
• 16:17
Speaker 1: up in the computer system. At that point, it's like
• 16:20
Speaker 1: almost too little, too late, and then he needs to
• 16:22
Speaker 1: hope that they'll offer you a COB in the future.
• 16:25
Speaker 1: So it definitely does get sticky. It's definitely not recommended
• 16:30
Speaker 1: at all to suicide bid, like at all but yeah,
• 16:36
Speaker 1: but that's also interesting that you guys say all bets
• 16:40
Speaker 1: off the table during pref round because when I but
• 16:44
Speaker 1: also I think it was kind of like an unspoken
• 16:46
Speaker 1: rule at that point, especially at Rutgers, like, Okay, we
• 16:51
Speaker 1: made it through this entire thing. You're also talking to
• 16:54
Speaker 1: this girl now for longer periods of time each round.
• 16:58
Speaker 1: By pref round, it's like, Okay, we need to spice
• 17:03
Speaker 1: it up a little bit, Like this is getting a
• 17:05
Speaker 1: little boring. I need to start talking to this girl
• 17:08
Speaker 1: about some fun things and just fun activities instead of
• 17:11
Speaker 1: just asking her like what she wants to do with
• 17:13
Speaker 1: her life. So I mean, I totally get that, and
• 17:18
Speaker 1: I feel like I also navigated more towards being open
• 17:24
Speaker 1: with the girls that I was preffing, because you want
• 17:29
Speaker 1: them to also know that they're going to have a
• 17:31
Speaker 1: great time and there is a lot of you know,
• 17:35
Speaker 1: fun moments in the house and it's not always so
• 17:37
Speaker 1: serious and we don't always have to be so you know,
• 17:42
Speaker 1: politically correct while speaking to them during recruitment, Yes, because
• 17:47
Speaker 1: then you almost like you almost start to feel like
• 17:49
  Speaker 1: a robot. It's like, oh my god, I'm simp I'm
• 17:52
Speaker 1: talking about the same thing over and over and over again.
• 17:56
Speaker 2: Yes, And the p and ms can definitely tell when
• 17:59
Speaker 2: you're holding back, or you're not saying what you want
• 18:01
Speaker 2: to say, or you're having a very surface level conversation.
• 18:04
Speaker 2: So I feel like if you then the rules a
• 18:06
Speaker 2: little bit, they feel connected to you and they feel
• 18:09
Speaker 2: connected to the house, and it just gives more of
• 18:11
Speaker 2: the transparent vibe that like, what you see is what
• 18:14
Speaker 2: you're going to get and you're gonna be happy with it.
• 18:18
Speaker 1: Yeah, guys, So the biggest thing during the recruitment process
• 18:24
Speaker 1: if you are training for recruitment right now, is definitely
• 18:28
Speaker 1: your bump groups. Your bump groups determine your entire routine
• 18:34
Speaker 1: during recruitment, and then it just comes down to being
• 18:38
Speaker 1: your authentic self and winning these girls to choose your sorority.
