- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello, Hello, we are happy to be here. Welcome to
- 0:06Speaker 1: foul Territory. I'm Trisha Whitaker filling in for Scott Bron today.
- 0:10Speaker 1: And of course we have the always entertaining Eric Kratz
- 0:13Speaker 1: with us, and we have Kevin Palar with us. Don't
- 0:16Speaker 1: forget to subscribe, tweeted us hashtag ft live by merch
- 0:20Speaker 1: at foul Territory shop dot com. We're gonna have so
- 0:23Speaker 1: much fun today. We have so many topics to get
- 0:26Speaker 1: through today. With the MLB Awards last night, all of
- 0:29Speaker 1: the awards being given out, We're gonna talk about everything
- 0:31Speaker 1: involving those. We're gonna hear from Ken Rosenthal, We're gonna
- 0:34Speaker 1: hear from Pete Fairbanks.
- 0:36Speaker 2: It's gonna be awesome. Guys, how are we doing? KP?
- 0:39Speaker 3: You want to start?
- 0:39Speaker 1: Because you've got some decoration there across your neck?
- 0:43Speaker 2: What is that?
- 0:44Speaker 4: I finally had my shoulder fixed my son's football team's over.
- 0:48Speaker 4: I was the quarterback. I had to put it off
- 0:49Speaker 4: a little bit and just a little wear and tear
- 0:51Speaker 4: on my right shoulder. Finally got it fixed, hopefully enough
- 0:54Speaker 4: time to get back from my winter basketball league.
- 1:00Speaker 2: So how are you feeling?
- 1:02Speaker 4: I feel good? Honestly, it was a little scope, not
- 1:05Speaker 4: not too painful. I feel pretty good.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Why did you get it done? Was it not before?
- 1:12Speaker 4: Well? I was in a little bit of pain, but
- 1:15Speaker 4: I mean you get operated on, you expect to be
- 1:17Speaker 4: in a lot more pain. But good surgeon, good hands,
- 1:20Speaker 4: and I'm feeling good.
- 1:21Speaker 3: We're not going to throw it out here, but you
- 1:24Speaker 3: need to check out KP's first pitch that he threw
- 1:27Speaker 3: out there for the Blue Jays and the playoffs here.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Maybe throw it out there.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe maybe that's why. You know what, athletes, especially
- 1:39Speaker 3: current athletes because KP is technically not retired yet, current
- 1:43Speaker 3: athletes he played this year play through things. So maybe
- 1:47Speaker 3: they're your your favorite player is not doing the best
- 1:49Speaker 3: that he can. Maybe they're playing through something. So if
- 1:52Speaker 3: your favorite player was Superman, well you know what, he
- 1:58Speaker 3: was playing through something. So good for you for grinding
- 2:00Speaker 3: out that one pitch.
- 2:02Speaker 4: I would love to hear. You know, just some of
- 2:04Speaker 4: these guys that went to the World Series, some of
- 2:06Speaker 4: the injuries that they were playing through. I know, George
- 2:08Speaker 4: Springer was a human pinata, you know, towards the end.
- 2:11Speaker 4: But like the amount of things that these guys were
- 2:14Speaker 4: dealing with through the end would amaze a lot of people,
- 2:16Speaker 4: and a lot of them would never really come out
- 2:18Speaker 4: and say it. But you know, was his oblique torn?
- 2:21Speaker 4: Was it not torn? It was like the craziest thing
- 2:23Speaker 4: I've ever seen. But he went out there and posted
- 2:25Speaker 4: so a lot of respect for George.
- 2:28Speaker 1: And most of it you're never going to know because
- 2:29Speaker 1: these guys don't want people to know. And I love
- 2:32Speaker 1: the trolls on Twitter, and they're just like sixty five
- 2:34Speaker 1: year old men sitting at home on their couch talking
- 2:36Speaker 1: about how George Springer, whoever it is, needs to be tougher.
- 2:39Speaker 1: It's like, really, okay, you lifted a twinkie today and
- 2:42Speaker 1: that's all you did. Okay, all right, next topic, Let's
- 2:45Speaker 1: charge the mound because we are going to talk a
- 2:47Speaker 1: little bit about the man who won the al MVP
- 2:51Speaker 1: last night.
- 2:52Speaker 2: That was a huge, huge.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Topic of discussion throughout the entire second half of the season.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Of course, it ramped up the last few weeks. It's
- 2:59Speaker 1: judged second consecutive victory, also his third overall. He's the
- 3:03Speaker 1: thirteenth player to be named MVP at least three times.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Of course, we know you want it over cal Rawley.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Eric I know what your thoughts were. I know you
- 3:13Speaker 1: wanted cal to win it. I believe you said that
- 3:15Speaker 1: yesterday or the day before. Didn't you say you wanted
- 3:18Speaker 1: cal to win it? What were your thoughts last night?
- 3:19Speaker 3: Don't don't pretend to know my thoughts. Okay, don't pretend
- 3:23Speaker 3: I listened because you listened to the show. Just because
- 3:26Speaker 3: I said cal Rally dying doesn't mean I didn't pick
- 3:31Speaker 3: Aaron Judge. So this is the best way to be
- 3:35Speaker 3: if any of your if any of your students are listening,
- 3:38Speaker 3: this is the best way to be right all the time.
- 3:40Speaker 3: You can say who you think should win, and then
- 3:43Speaker 3: who should win, and either way you're going to be right. Look,
- 3:46Speaker 3: I'm not going to sit here and defame Aaron Judge
- 3:49Speaker 3: for the historic season he had. Obviously, as a catcher,
- 3:53Speaker 3: I understand what cal Raley went through, and as an outfielder,
- 3:57Speaker 3: KP understands what Judge did. Judgy wins. This should have
- 4:02Speaker 3: been his fourth MVP. Really, if you go back and
- 4:04Speaker 3: look at his numbers, some of the years he didn't win.
- 4:09Speaker 3: I just there's so many things that can be said
- 4:12Speaker 3: about him, but all that he does on the field,
- 4:16Speaker 3: he is that much better of a person. So it's like,
- 4:19Speaker 3: it's so cool to see anytime an ex teammate gets
- 4:22Speaker 3: something like this, gets an award, gets recognized for something
- 4:27Speaker 3: like it's so well deserved and it's crazy to think
- 4:31Speaker 3: he had that much better of a season than cal
- 4:34Speaker 3: Raley when cal Raley had a historic season. So and
- 4:38Speaker 3: good for the voters. I thought the voters did an
- 4:40Speaker 3: amazing job.
- 4:43Speaker 4: I mean, I agree with you. I mean I was
- 4:45Speaker 4: kind of on the same page as you. Early on.
- 4:47Speaker 4: I said I wanted cal to win. I felt like
- 4:49Speaker 4: what he did was historic, But I also don't think
- 4:52Speaker 4: we should, you know, fould a guy if he's winning
- 4:54Speaker 4: an MVP every year. I think, you know when I
- 4:56Speaker 4: really actually when it came out yesterday and I looked
- 4:59Speaker 4: at Aaron Judges' numbers, and I think someone talked about it.
- 5:03Speaker 4: It's a video game number. What he did is historic
- 5:06Speaker 4: in itself too, And you know, like Kratzy said, he's
- 5:09Speaker 4: an unbelievable player, unbelievable human, a great ambassador for the game,
- 5:13Speaker 4: and I think we're witnessing one of the greatest players
- 5:15Speaker 4: to ever play this game. I think we're very fortunate,
- 5:18Speaker 4: and I hope people don't take it for granted what
- 5:20Speaker 4: Aaron Judge is doing. You know, at his size, his
- 5:23Speaker 4: structure to be able to go out and hit three
- 5:25Speaker 4: thirty in a game where no one talks about batting
- 5:28Speaker 4: average and it's not important, but it was important for him.
- 5:31Speaker 4: And the guy's on base nearly half the time. It's
- 5:33Speaker 4: it's unbelievable what he's able to do. And I feel
- 5:35Speaker 4: like he's only getting better. We always talk about guys
- 5:38Speaker 4: as they age, they're supposed to decline. He's only getting better.
- 5:41Speaker 4: And I think that I wouldn't be surprised if he
- 5:44Speaker 4: wins another one next year. That's how good he is.
- 5:46Speaker 3: I mean, it's a credit to him for wanting to improve,
- 5:48Speaker 3: for wanting to have a batting average, and oh yeah,
- 5:52Speaker 3: he still had fifty three home runs after a year
- 5:55Speaker 3: we had fifty eight the year before he had an
- 5:57Speaker 3: injury because of the concrete and Dodge Stadium, and before
- 6:01Speaker 3: that it was sixty two homers. Like he he's not
- 6:05Speaker 3: afraid of trying to improve when he's already he's already
- 6:09Speaker 3: at the top. He is the top. And so that's
- 6:11Speaker 3: when it's dangerous when you have a physical specimen, when
- 6:14Speaker 3: you have a guy who is already just driven in
- 6:18Speaker 3: a different in a different way than other people. And
- 6:21Speaker 3: then you go ahead and say, oh, he's doing this
- 6:25Speaker 3: in New York where a lot of people fade, a
- 6:27Speaker 3: lot of people can't handle handle the spotlight. And it's like, well,
- 6:31Speaker 3: if it wasn't for the riggers of New York and
- 6:34Speaker 3: all the stuff that really goes into being the captain
- 6:37Speaker 3: of a team. No, he's he's he's continued to improve,
- 6:42Speaker 3: and I can't there isn't words to say other than
- 6:47Speaker 3: you need to go out and watch what this guy's doing.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Because last night when he won, when they announced he
- 6:51Speaker 3: won the award, we started going through my kids' stats,
- 6:55Speaker 3: like on Game Changer and stuff like that, and my
- 6:57Speaker 3: daughter was like, wow, I had a really good fall.
- 7:00Speaker 3: She was like, my ops was And she didn't even
- 7:03Speaker 3: know what ops was until last night when I was
- 7:05Speaker 3: telling her and she was like, my ops was one
- 7:08Speaker 3: point one four three. She was like she looked over
- 7:12Speaker 3: to screen because Judge Judge beat my ops by one
- 7:16Speaker 3: point in the Big Leagues. It kind of like it
- 7:19Speaker 3: just it kind of was a full circle moment for
- 7:22Speaker 3: a thirteen year old, and it shows what this guy
- 7:25Speaker 3: is doing is really video game stuff.
- 7:30Speaker 5: Kratz pop quiz. What has thirty five grams of protein,

- 8:29Speaker 5: support FT.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Yeah, and it's not to say he doesn't have guys
- 8:32Speaker 4: around him, but Kratzy, you know as a catcher. Anytime
- 8:36Speaker 4: you're playing the Yankees and you go into scattering ports,
- 8:39Speaker 4: don't let Aaron Judge beat us. And still he finds
- 8:41Speaker 4: ways to hit for a high average, hit home runs,
- 8:45Speaker 4: and he missed what I think he missed over two
- 8:47Speaker 4: weeks this year with the elbow injury, so his numbers
- 8:50Speaker 4: could have been even better from the power production standpoint.
- 8:54Speaker 2: So I think both.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Like one of the things that I think you can
- 8:59Speaker 1: do is you can say both can be true. Right,
- 9:00Speaker 1: they both had incredible seasons. And it doesn't take away
- 9:03Speaker 1: from Aaron Judge's season when you say you thought cal
- 9:06Speaker 1: Rawley should have won the MVP, because that's what I thought, right.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I don't think that Aaron. Of course, Aaron Judge had
- 9:11Speaker 1: a historic season. But when I think MVP, I think
- 9:14Speaker 1: who was the most valuable player for that team? And
- 9:17Speaker 1: in my opinion, cal Ray was the most valuable player
- 9:19Speaker 1: for his team.
- 9:20Speaker 2: He's a switch hitter.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Obviously he did what he did at the plate, but
- 9:25Speaker 1: catching that pitching staff too, at the level that he did,
- 9:28Speaker 1: to me, all encompassing, cal Rawley was the MVP for
- 9:32Speaker 1: his team. But that doesn't that's not saying that Aaron
- 9:35Speaker 1: Judge's season wasn't obviously historic and impressive, but I think
- 9:40Speaker 1: both can be true. But when you think about which
- 9:42Speaker 1: is actually what a lot of the voters said when
- 9:44Speaker 1: they talked about why they voted for Cal Rawley, because
- 9:47Speaker 1: some of the voters guys released why they voted for
- 9:50Speaker 1: who they did, which I love. I love that if
- 9:53Speaker 1: you voted in this, you need to explain yourself and
- 9:55Speaker 1: we need to know and we do right for these
- 9:58Speaker 1: people who explain themselves why they voted for Cal, why
- 10:01Speaker 1: they voted for Aaron.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Right.
- 10:03Speaker 1: So Tyler Kepner talked about how he voted for Cal
- 10:06Speaker 1: because it's important to honor history when it happens, and
- 10:09Speaker 1: Raley's home run sixty home runs set not one single
- 10:12Speaker 1: season record, but two, and then he mentioned how he
- 10:16Speaker 1: did it across seven hundred and five played appearances, which
- 10:19Speaker 1: is quote a staggering total for a backstop. So I guess,
- 10:24Speaker 1: KP for me, when you look at these voters releasing
- 10:27Speaker 1: their reasons, how much do you value when they decide
- 10:30Speaker 1: to say this is who I voted for and why.
- 10:33Speaker 3: I love it.
- 10:34Speaker 4: I mean, I always think about the Hall of Fame ballot,
- 10:36Speaker 4: and people don't want to you know, sign their name
- 10:38Speaker 4: on the ballot and make them public. Like I think,
- 10:40Speaker 4: when you have the right to be a voter, I
- 10:43Speaker 4: think it's cool to be able to explain yourselves because
- 10:45Speaker 4: now everyone's gonna have the same opinion. You know. I
- 10:47Speaker 4: always try to argue with people on Twitter or x
- 10:50Speaker 4: all the time, Like I always say, this is my opinion, Like,
- 10:53Speaker 4: you can't argue with my opinion because it's how I feel.
- 10:55Speaker 4: So when these people come out and have a vote
- 10:58Speaker 4: and they explain themselves, I can't argue with what he's saying.
- 11:01Speaker 4: I just think the MVP across all sports has turned
- 11:04Speaker 4: into who's the best player? You know, when you talk
- 11:07Speaker 4: about a person's value, it's really hard to quantify a
- 11:10Speaker 4: player's value. Obviously, I would say as an outfielder, I'd
- 11:14Speaker 4: like to think I was really valuable. But a catcher
- 11:17Speaker 4: is obviously the most valuable person on a baseball field.
- 11:20Speaker 4: They have to hit, they have to handle pitching staff,
- 11:22Speaker 4: they have thirteen fourteen guys. They have to know, you know,
- 11:26Speaker 4: what their outpitches, you know what makes them tick, what
- 11:28Speaker 4: makes them successful, how to get him back in the zone.
- 11:31Speaker 4: You know, for a catcher to do what he did,
- 11:32Speaker 4: is historic, and I'm not one here to say that
- 11:35Speaker 4: everyone deserves a trophy. He because we live in this
- 11:37Speaker 4: world where everyone feels like they should be a winner.
- 11:40Speaker 4: But I wouldn't have been I wouldn't have disagreed if
- 11:42Speaker 4: they had co MVPs this year because I think what
- 11:45Speaker 4: Kle did deserved to be an MVP because of the
- 11:48Speaker 4: historic contact what he did. But it shouldn't take away
- 11:50Speaker 4: from what Aaron Judge did because it's arguably one of
- 11:53Speaker 4: the best offensive seasons we've ever seen.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Yeah, that's how impressive what both of them did.
- 11:57Speaker 1: We're willing to say, all right, we will get CO
- 12:00Speaker 1: MVP in the world of being anti participation trophy, which
- 12:03Speaker 1: I assume all three of us on this call are
- 12:05Speaker 1: right now. That's a great point. But what we want
- 12:09Speaker 1: to also talk about is what we all knew was
- 12:11Speaker 1: going to happen, and that is Otani winning n L MVP.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Of course, we know Mark's only the second time a
- 12:17Speaker 1: player has won MVP awards in three consecutive seasons. Eric,
- 12:23Speaker 1: I'm not going to ask you to react to him winning.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Obviously we all knew that was going to happen. But
- 12:28Speaker 1: when you do look at Otani winning unanimously. What comes
- 12:32Speaker 1: to mind about his season and what he did.
- 12:35Speaker 3: I think we're going to get watered down with Otani stuff.
- 12:40Speaker 3: I think it's going to he's watering down what he
- 12:43Speaker 3: is accomplishing three straight MVPs. Awesome, the fact that this
- 12:49Speaker 3: year he was doing what he did offensively while rehabbing.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Next picture, we have on that has had an injury
- 12:56Speaker 3: ever in their career, talk about the fact that you know,
- 13:00Speaker 3: you had to rehab and like it's a grind of
- 13:02Speaker 3: a year, Like we had Shane Bieber and he's like,
- 13:04Speaker 3: you know, there's some days where you're not sure if
- 13:06Speaker 3: you're gonna feel good. There's some days where you're like,
- 13:10Speaker 3: I pushed it, you know, I need extra recovery. You
- 13:13Speaker 3: know what show Hey did. He let off that game
- 13:16Speaker 3: and then he had to redo it again. Like and
- 13:19Speaker 3: I get it. Some people are gonna troll and be like, well,
- 13:21Speaker 3: you know he only pitches once a week. He's all
- 13:24Speaker 3: this suff like stop just because show Hey. The rest
- 13:27Speaker 3: of the league is not watering down show Hey. Show
- 13:30Speaker 3: Hey is watering down what show Hey has done. And
- 13:33Speaker 3: this is his award for the next eight years that
- 13:37Speaker 3: he is in under contract with the Dodgers until he
- 13:41Speaker 3: proves that he can't a hit and pitch and his
- 13:46Speaker 3: hitting then goes down, that he can't run the bases,
- 13:52Speaker 3: that he can't like this is his award. I'm sorry,
- 13:55Speaker 3: I want to look at the odds for next year,
- 13:57Speaker 3: but I'm gonna throw some money down if it's if
- 13:59Speaker 3: it's plus money, because he might be the first negative
- 14:02Speaker 3: money that I've ever seen for a MVP award because
- 14:07Speaker 3: he's going to stay healthy and he is going to
- 14:09Speaker 3: win the award if he finishes an entire season.
- 14:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's crazy too. You talk about the
- 14:15Speaker 4: three straight MVPs, and they've all been three different types
- 14:17Speaker 4: of years. Obviously the first one he pitched and hit.
- 14:20Speaker 4: You know, last year he didn't pitch at all. You know,
- 14:24Speaker 4: we watched him go out and do something that's never
- 14:26Speaker 4: been done in the history of the game and go
- 14:27Speaker 4: fifty to fifty. And then this year he has to
- 14:30Speaker 4: rehab work his way back, doesn't make any minor league
- 14:32Speaker 4: starts because he's the leadoff hitter, he's their most valuable player.
- 14:36Speaker 4: And then he goes out and pitches the way he does.
- 14:38Speaker 4: It's it's incredible what he's able to do and like us.
- 14:41Speaker 4: To your point, Eric, I hope people don't get bored
- 14:44Speaker 4: of watching what he does because I don't think we'll
- 14:46Speaker 4: ever see anyone like him ever. Again.
- 14:50Speaker 1: No, you definitely don't want to take for granted what
- 14:52Speaker 1: these guys are doing, and you don't want to take
- 14:54Speaker 1: it for granted what a guy like Judge is doing either,
- 14:56Speaker 1: even though we did talk a lot about what cal
- 14:58Speaker 1: Rawly did. But guys, one thing I'm opposed to you,
- 15:01Speaker 1: how thankful do you think that Aaron Judges that Otani
- 15:04Speaker 1: signed with with an NL team?
- 15:07Speaker 3: Oh so much, so much. I mean Ryan O'Hearn. Ryan
- 15:12Speaker 3: O'Hearn said it on the show when Dever's got traded.
- 15:16Speaker 3: When Devers got traded to the Giants, he was like,
- 15:20Speaker 3: I just moved up into dh DH discussion for the
- 15:25Speaker 3: All Star Game, Like obviously, but I would have loved
- 15:28Speaker 3: to see in that conversation because we had that conversation
- 15:31Speaker 3: and I thought Showhy did a little bit more than
- 15:34Speaker 3: Judge the one year where Judge hit sixty two, so
- 15:38Speaker 3: that conversation would be fun to have too. But yes,
- 15:40Speaker 3: he's super juiced because you're just not beating show. Hey,
- 15:43Speaker 3: he's the best player in the game. I agree.
- 15:48Speaker 4: I agree. I mean he's got to be thankful. I mean,
- 15:51Speaker 4: does it take away from Aaron Judge's greatness if show
- 15:54Speaker 4: Hay's still in the American League and Aaron Judge doesn't
- 15:57Speaker 4: have three or four MVPs, maybe, you know, when it
- 16:00Speaker 4: comes to Hall of Fame ballots and you know who
- 16:02Speaker 4: we put up there as some of the greatest players.
- 16:04Speaker 4: But I think he's very thankful they're in different leagues
- 16:07Speaker 4: because it's these two Guys Awards to win until someone
- 16:11Speaker 4: figures out how to take it from one of these guys.
- 16:13Speaker 4: And I don't know who's the guy who's going to
- 16:15Speaker 4: be able to do it. You know, in the American League,
- 16:17Speaker 4: I could see a guy like Bobby Witt putting together
- 16:19Speaker 4: an historic season and maybe figuring out a way to
- 16:22Speaker 4: steal an MVP from Aaron Judge. But we just watched
- 16:26Speaker 4: cal Rawly do something that's never been done in the
- 16:28Speaker 4: history of the game, and Aaron Judge still won. So
- 16:30Speaker 4: I think it's these two Guys Awards until these guys
- 16:33Speaker 4: decide that they don't want to win anymore.
- 16:35Speaker 1: I was gonna say, what more does somebody have to
- 16:37Speaker 1: do to steal the MVP from judge than what cal
- 16:39Speaker 1: Rawley did.
- 16:40Speaker 2: That's a great point. All Right, We're going to talk
- 16:43Speaker 2: about one of my favorite.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Teams to cover this season, and that is the Milwaukee
- 16:48Speaker 1: Brewers because Matt Arnold one Executive of the Year. Personally,
- 16:53Speaker 1: I think he was wildly deserving of that award seeing
- 16:56Speaker 1: what he did with the Brewers, a franchise record ninety
- 16:58Speaker 1: seven wins, the best of mark.
- 17:00Speaker 2: In Major League Baseball?
- 17:02Speaker 1: Eric, how deserving do you think Matt was of winning
- 17:05Speaker 1: that award after what.
- 17:06Speaker 2: The bruise did.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Obviously, not a fan of any team. After you're done playing,
- 17:11Speaker 3: you just kind of follow people. Matt Arnold is one
- 17:14Speaker 3: of those people no matter where he ends up going
- 17:17Speaker 3: where if he stays with Milwaukee, like getting to know
- 17:21Speaker 3: him as a assistant GM or whatever his actual role was,
- 17:25Speaker 3: I knew he was going to be a guy that
- 17:27Speaker 3: was going to be able to take over some type
- 17:29Speaker 3: of franchise, some type of organization and do what he's
- 17:32Speaker 3: done just because of how he is down to earth,
- 17:35Speaker 3: but he's not afraid of making the tough choices. He's
- 17:38Speaker 3: able to evaluate talent, but he's also able to evaluate
- 17:42Speaker 3: human beings. So I couldn't be happier for him and congrats.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Let's talk about reliever of the year Eraldis Chapman obviously
- 17:52Speaker 1: the AL reliever of the Year, and then Edwin Diaz
- 17:55Speaker 1: for the NL. Not surprising here really with Chapman. But Eric,
- 18:00Speaker 1: we'll start with you. What do you think of Chapman season,
- 18:03Speaker 1: especially at thirty seven years old, and what he was
- 18:06Speaker 1: able to do.
- 18:07Speaker 3: The ageless wonder he really is. It's amazing and I
- 18:12Speaker 3: would call him more motivated than anything. You heard his
- 18:16Speaker 3: comments on I forget what compleetto Completto was the show,
- 18:21Speaker 3: the Spanish show, and he was like, I will never
- 18:25Speaker 3: sign with the Yankees, and signing with the Red Sox
- 18:29Speaker 3: for essentially a deal he probably could have gotten at
- 18:31Speaker 3: a lot of other places. Seemed pretty not spiteful, but
- 18:36Speaker 3: he was. He was on a mission and he showed
- 18:39Speaker 3: it this year like I think last year he Ken Joyce,
- 18:42Speaker 3: Ken Joyce Joyce, Ben Joyce threw a pitch at like
- 18:47Speaker 3: one hundred and five or something, and he threw one
- 18:48Speaker 3: at one hundred and four just to show they still
- 18:51Speaker 3: got it. Like he knows what he needs to do,
- 18:53Speaker 3: and he was very motivated this year being in the
- 18:56Speaker 3: Yankees division I think he really wanted to show everybody,
- 18:59Speaker 3: but also the what he could do. Got a nice
- 19:02Speaker 3: little contract extension, So good for you, Chappie. But as
- 19:06Speaker 3: he knows, I still own him. That's it.
- 19:11Speaker 4: Yeah, you would think at some point he would just age,
- 19:14Speaker 4: but I know off air we were talking a little
- 19:16Speaker 4: bit about the use of Instagram and I love following
- 19:19Speaker 4: a Rollis Chapman on Instagram, and it's no surprise he's
- 19:22Speaker 4: still able to have the success he has. I mean,
- 19:24Speaker 4: this guy's an absolute monster. I've never personally played with him.
- 19:28Speaker 4: I have some friends that I've played with him on
- 19:31Speaker 4: various teams that he's been on, and they said, this
- 19:33Speaker 4: guy's an absolute animal in the weight room every single
- 19:36Speaker 4: day he's working out. So you got to give him
- 19:38Speaker 4: credit at age thirty seven to you know, arguably have
- 19:41Speaker 4: his best season, you know, sign the contract extension to
- 19:44Speaker 4: stay in Boston. That guy's an absolute nightmare to face.
- 19:47Speaker 4: Never love facing him. I can't say the same thing
- 19:50Speaker 4: as Kratz. I did not own that guy. I don't
- 19:52Speaker 4: think he owned me.
- 19:53Speaker 2: I just think it was it was a tough matchup
- 19:56Speaker 2: Byron Buxton.
- 19:58Speaker 1: We know that he appeared on four fourteen of thirty ballots.
- 20:01Speaker 1: He finished two point shy of tenth place in the
- 20:04Speaker 1: al MVP vote. He got three seventh place votes, and
- 20:11Speaker 1: so we didn't talk about that a little bit.
- 20:13Speaker 2: We know, you know what he's been through.
- 20:17Speaker 1: We've talked about the potential that he could have if
- 20:19Speaker 1: he could stay healthy for a full season. But guys,
- 20:22Speaker 1: what's your kind of reaction to that, finishing eleventh in
- 20:25Speaker 1: the al MVP votes and missing narrowly a three million
- 20:29Speaker 1: dollar bonus in his contract if he finished in the
- 20:31Speaker 1: top ten.
- 20:33Speaker 4: Well, I mean, much like p he probably would have
- 20:35Speaker 4: had some spare coins sitting around if he would have
- 20:37Speaker 4: got that three million dollars. But if I was him,
- 20:40Speaker 4: I would have been I would have been talking to
- 20:42Speaker 4: the writers. I would have been talking to anyone who
- 20:44Speaker 4: has a vote and been like, you know what, it
- 20:46Speaker 4: doesn't bother you to give me a sixth place votere
- 20:48Speaker 4: SI play. No one's even looking that for down the ballot.
- 20:50Speaker 4: If I knew I had three million dollars to finished
- 20:52Speaker 4: tenth place, I would have been I would have been
- 20:55Speaker 4: cheating the system a little bit. But I think if
- 20:59Speaker 4: he stays healthy, he's gonna have no problem reaching that
- 21:01Speaker 4: three million dollars. You know, in years to come, he
- 21:03Speaker 4: just needs to stay on the field because he's one
- 21:05Speaker 4: of the best players win healthy.
- 21:07Speaker 3: Maybe the pole ads were cheating the system a little bit,
- 21:10Speaker 3: and every time a team came in and a writer
- 21:12Speaker 3: came in and be like, hey, I heard you got
- 21:14Speaker 3: the MVP BO this year. Just I really don't think,
- 21:17Speaker 3: you know, Buxton's really been kind of a problem. You know,
- 21:20Speaker 3: all of a sudden, Oh oh wow, we saved three
- 21:23Speaker 3: million dollars, because you know that team wants to save
- 21:25Speaker 3: some money. Three million dollars. Brian bucks has made a
- 21:28Speaker 3: lot of money. Three million dollars is a lot of money.
- 21:30Speaker 3: I don't care who you are.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Would you campaign for them to vote for you, Eric,
- 21:34Speaker 2: if you were in that situation?
- 21:36Speaker 3: But the right like you can't. KP says that, but
- 21:40Speaker 3: you can't, Like you have to. You have to be
- 21:43Speaker 3: who you are. You're you're calling people you're calling. Last September,
- 21:47Speaker 3: you see Buckston over here, He's like, allion, I've never
- 21:49Speaker 3: seen a player do that, not yet, not when it's
- 21:54Speaker 3: not when you got three million dollars on the line,
- 21:56Speaker 3: I mean tenth place and the crazy Party got eleventh place.
- 22:00Speaker 3: He missed it. By two points. Two points.
- 22:04Speaker 4: What's that the difference between like a seventh place vote
- 22:07Speaker 4: and a sixth plath vote, you know, potentially is that
- 22:10Speaker 4: two points. I don't know exactly what worked. Yeah, I mean,
- 22:14Speaker 4: you know, you're not asking someone to say, hey, vote
- 22:17Speaker 4: for me first, but like, hey, you know, down that
- 22:19Speaker 4: ballot a little bit, you know, once you get into
- 22:21Speaker 4: those later numbers, just put.
- 22:22Speaker 3: My name on there, Dan Hayes, give me a give
- 22:25Speaker 3: me a first place. That's it. That's it. One first place.
- 22:31Speaker 2: My goodness.
- 22:34Speaker 1: All right, let's talk about uh, well, Twitter trolls, right,
- 22:41Speaker 1: there's a lot of them out there, but let's take
- 22:43Speaker 1: a look at this one. There were a lot of
- 22:47Speaker 1: reactions on Twitter to Derek's nl MVP ballot this year, right,
- 22:53Speaker 1: he put per Domo at third place, Soto getting his
- 22:58Speaker 1: second place votes, and there were.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Well, you know, a lot of reaction.
- 23:03Speaker 1: To this ballot here, guys, And honestly, rightfully so some
- 23:07Speaker 1: I'm saying it was just clickbait that he would even
- 23:09Speaker 1: do this or tweet this. What do you guys think, Eric.
- 23:13Speaker 4: You're showing off some good handwriting, that's for sure.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Yeah, all caps, you go all caps when.
- 23:18Speaker 4: You write no chance no, I don't unless it's like,
- 23:22Speaker 4: unless you like, are signing something to someone, like if
- 23:26Speaker 4: you have to sign a jersey or bat it's just
- 23:28Speaker 4: more legible to write in all caps and you write slower.
- 23:32Speaker 4: But no, I would never write like my to do
- 23:34Speaker 4: list or like a grocery list in all caps.
- 23:37Speaker 1: That's I am a half cursive half print. You guys,
- 23:41Speaker 1: I'm not even joking with you.
- 23:43Speaker 3: That's a weird hybrid. But that's not weird. It's not
- 23:48Speaker 3: weird that Derek did that. I love that he wrote
- 23:51Speaker 3: that out. I love that he had a outside the
- 23:55Speaker 3: box way of looking at it. I love the way
- 23:58Speaker 3: that he was able to then go and connect with
- 24:01Speaker 3: the fans. Isn't that what fans? Isn't that why we
- 24:03Speaker 3: have Twitter and Instagram so that we connect? And Derek
- 24:06Speaker 3: was not afraid of connecting. Some people call clickbait. He's
- 24:11Speaker 3: a writer. Like he put out his he put out
- 24:15Speaker 3: his guests of who he thought his opinion, and you
- 24:18Speaker 3: know what, good for him for standing behind it. I
- 24:21Speaker 3: did think Perdomo should have been higher up on some
- 24:24Speaker 3: of the lists than what he didn't. He wasn't a
- 24:27Speaker 3: dh I know Schwarberg got second place, but like, this
- 24:31Speaker 3: man played shortstop for a team that was scratching a
- 24:34Speaker 3: call in all year, and he had an incredible year.
- 24:36Speaker 3: Look it up.
- 24:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I agree with you. I think, like
- 24:40Speaker 4: you said, the whole idea of social media was to
- 24:43Speaker 4: connect with people. It's not to be little talk down
- 24:46Speaker 4: to people, trill people. The fact that he wanted to
- 24:49Speaker 4: go out there and put his votes out there and
- 24:50Speaker 4: then engage with the fans and maybe explain why he
- 24:54Speaker 4: did what he did. But at the end of the day,
- 24:55Speaker 4: these writers get to choose who they want to vote for.
- 24:59Speaker 4: Some make them public, some don't. This is his opinion
- 25:02Speaker 4: of who he thought were the most valuable players. We're
- 25:04Speaker 4: not saying the best players the most valuable and he
- 25:07Speaker 4: felt like that position at short is very valuable to
- 25:10Speaker 4: the Arizona time.
- 25:13Speaker 6: I think there's still a bright future for for Hayden
- 25:15Speaker 6: and and we're excited about that. And there's some other
- 25:18Speaker 6: guys you can be really excited about.
- 25:20Speaker 1: You know.
- 25:20Speaker 6: I think Wiz'd Hunt's a really good pitcher. There's a
- 25:23Speaker 6: ton of young guys down there. I think Trevor McDonald
- 25:25Speaker 6: at the end of the year was uh, you know,
- 25:28Speaker 6: really impressive. You know, we got to see him last
- 25:31Speaker 6: the year before, like the last game he was like
- 25:33Speaker 6: a spot, Hey, let's throw three innings, and he's did amazing.
- 25:38Speaker 6: And then this year he came in and I thought
- 25:40Speaker 6: he did a great job again. So there's a lot
- 25:44Speaker 6: of really good pieces that we have obviously, you know,
- 25:48Speaker 6: me and Robbie, and you know, I would love to
- 25:51Speaker 6: have Justin back. I thought, Justin back to the kind
- 25:53Speaker 6: of the scouting part of things helped me so much,
- 25:57Speaker 6: uh in my career, not only just mentality, you know,
- 26:04Speaker 6: the scouting part of it, seeing reading different things that
- 26:07Speaker 6: I might you know, not have seen before. And I
- 26:12Speaker 6: would love Justin to come back. Like I said, it's
- 26:15Speaker 6: not my decision. I don't get to decide these things.
- 26:18Speaker 6: I saw the Max thing. I know Tony knows them
- 26:21Speaker 6: from a long time ago. So and I'm sure I'm
- 26:23Speaker 6: sure it would be very similar. Learning as much as
- 26:26Speaker 6: I can, and then yeah, you know, I I think
- 26:30Speaker 6: at the end, I always try to find guys and
- 26:33Speaker 6: get better in certain ways. I've seen a lot of
- 26:36Speaker 6: comments about trying to get starting pitching and and and
- 26:39Speaker 6: other other spots. So like I said, just show up
- 26:44Speaker 6: and try to try to do try to get better
- 26:46Speaker 6: as for myself and then kind of let the other
- 26:49Speaker 6: pieces fall as they may.
- 26:55Speaker 1: All right, so let's talk a little bit about the
- 26:57Speaker 1: Giants here. That was some interesting stuff from Logan Web.
- 26:59Speaker 1: We know that they have a new manager, but we
- 27:02Speaker 1: want to talk about that starting rotation. They have talked
- 27:06Speaker 1: about how adding some pieces to that is definitely going
- 27:09Speaker 1: to be a priority for them, adding that pitching depth.
- 27:13Speaker 1: What do you guys think that rotation is going to
- 27:14Speaker 1: look like in twenty twenty six. Eric will start with you.
- 27:18Speaker 3: I mean, I think it's going to be the similar
- 27:20Speaker 3: what he was talking about some young guys, him and
- 27:23Speaker 3: Robbie Ray. That's the reason they got Robbie Ray another
- 27:25Speaker 3: year off of his Tommy John surgery. So I think
- 27:30Speaker 3: it's something that is they have the backbone, the pieces. Look,
- 27:35Speaker 3: the reality is what he was talking about Justin Verlander.
- 27:38Speaker 3: He's not saying, yeah, we gotta bring Justin Verlander back
- 27:41Speaker 3: because he's gonna win fifteen games for us. No, he
- 27:44Speaker 3: knows what kind of impact he made on his career
- 27:49Speaker 3: and what kind of impact he made on the other
- 27:50Speaker 3: young guys that they were talking about. And I think
- 27:54Speaker 3: if they get a surezer, that's great. But if this
- 27:57Speaker 3: team wants to take that next step, if this team
- 27:59Speaker 3: won to compete in the National League, I think they
- 28:03Speaker 3: and their feel is that they need another big rotation piece.
- 28:08Speaker 3: I don't think those guys are the answer. I think
- 28:10Speaker 3: those guys are additions. And I think there's a difference
- 28:13Speaker 3: between the answer to what you need and an addition,
- 28:16Speaker 3: and so to me, I think Buster Posey understands that.
- 28:19Speaker 3: But he also understands that in Oracle Park you can
- 28:24Speaker 3: get a lot done, you can mask a lot of things.
- 28:26Speaker 3: You don't need the same thing as other teams would
- 28:30Speaker 3: need to be successful as a starting pitcher.
- 28:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I agree with you. I think you
- 28:39Speaker 4: can mask a lot of things in that ballpark. But
- 28:41Speaker 4: I think if we're talking about and knowing Buster Posey,
- 28:43Speaker 4: he wants to win. The reason he took over, the
- 28:46Speaker 4: reason he hired the manager hit he went out and
- 28:49Speaker 4: got is they want to win. And in order for
- 28:51Speaker 4: them to compete with a team like the Dodgers within
- 28:54Speaker 4: their own division and the Padres, they're gonna need to
- 28:57Speaker 4: at least get one more really quality starting There is
- 29:01Speaker 4: value in bringing in a Justin Verlander and a Max
- 29:03Speaker 4: Scherzer to help these guys to teach the young guys
- 29:06Speaker 4: to allow Logan Web Robbie Ray to continue to grow.
- 29:10Speaker 4: But like you said, they are not necessarily answer you
- 29:12Speaker 4: need in the rotation. They need impact. If you could
- 29:15Speaker 4: put someone in slotted after Logan Web Robbie Ray, a
- 29:19Speaker 4: third guy, maybe you have a veteran and a young guy,
- 29:22Speaker 4: but someone in that third spot that is going to
- 29:24Speaker 4: go out there and win you fifteen sixteen games a year.
- 29:27Speaker 4: They got a chance to compete, but without that, it's
- 29:29Speaker 4: an uphill battle facing teams like the Dodgers and Padres
- 29:32Speaker 4: and even the Diamondbacks in your own division.
- 29:35Speaker 1: All Right, So one of the things that the Giants
- 29:37Speaker 1: announced recently was they hired Bruce Bochi for that special
- 29:40Speaker 1: assistant role. And you know, we know Buster Posey has
- 29:44Speaker 1: talked a lot about how much he loves that move
- 29:46Speaker 1: because of the leadership, the insight, the experience that he
- 29:52Speaker 1: is going to provide them.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Eric, what do you think about that move?
- 29:55Speaker 3: I think anytime you get a specialist, I think it's
- 29:58Speaker 3: a cool move. I think you have of somebody awesome
- 30:01Speaker 3: in the organization. Is it making a blip on the
- 30:04Speaker 3: Giants radar?
- 30:05Speaker 2: No?
- 30:06Speaker 3: I think there's other organizations that could really kind of
- 30:09Speaker 3: learn from bringing people back, bringing people that have won back,
- 30:14Speaker 3: bringing people that know the game back. What that looks
- 30:18Speaker 3: like all depends on the guy. Like a lot of
- 30:20Speaker 3: good organizations have a really great trickle down effect from
- 30:24Speaker 3: the top. I don't think the giants necessarily need this.
- 30:28Speaker 3: I think Buster just really enjoys Boach's company, and the
- 30:33Speaker 3: organization should have him around as long as Boat wants
- 30:36Speaker 3: to be around.
- 30:39Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a it's a it's a way of saying, hey,
- 30:43Speaker 4: we're paying you money to be a special assistant, so
- 30:45Speaker 4: when our manager calls, you need to pick up. And
- 30:47Speaker 4: it's going to be a great resource for him because
- 30:50Speaker 4: you know, it is his first time managing in the
- 30:52Speaker 4: major leagues and he's already been very open. I've heard
- 30:55Speaker 4: him on a couple other shows, radio shows, and you know,
- 30:58Speaker 4: he's been in braced and kind of that managerial fraternity
- 31:02Speaker 4: very well. But having someone like Bruce Bochin his corner
- 31:05Speaker 4: is not going to hurt.
- 31:06Speaker 7: I think I would expect them to reach out, you know,
- 31:09Speaker 7: I think I don't know if it'll be you know, serious,
- 31:13Speaker 7: but maybe to check in and you know, kind of
- 31:15Speaker 7: gauge the waters. So to speak, and you know, I
- 31:17Speaker 7: had a good talk with him after I was I
- 31:19Speaker 7: was traded, and you know, I was really encouraging on
- 31:22Speaker 7: possibly maybe you know, coming back there, and you know,
- 31:25Speaker 7: obviously things changed. That was three months ago, but you know,
- 31:30Speaker 7: you know, I really enjoyed my time getting to know
- 31:31Speaker 7: how I'm a little bit and think that the cardinal's
- 31:34Speaker 7: future is in really good hands with him.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Okay, well that was a ringing endorsement from Ryan for
- 31:40Speaker 1: him bloom. But I know he says that he expects
- 31:43Speaker 1: the Cardinals to reach out to him this winter.
- 31:47Speaker 2: KP.
- 31:49Speaker 1: What do you think do you think he should be
- 31:50Speaker 1: expecting a call from them? Do you think that he
- 31:53Speaker 1: should be holding his breath?
- 31:55Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 31:55Speaker 4: No, that was going to be my friendly advice to him,
- 31:58Speaker 4: as I wouldn't say hold your breath. We might that
- 32:00Speaker 4: might be the last of Ryan Helsley. We see if
- 32:02Speaker 4: he's holding his breath waiting for the Cardinals uh to
- 32:06Speaker 4: call him. I mean they've talked about they want to
- 32:07Speaker 4: shed payroll. They're not going to go out and spend.
- 32:10Speaker 4: You know, he didn't he had a down year, especially
- 32:13Speaker 4: after he got traded. He didn't have the success that
- 32:15Speaker 4: he had before. But he's still gonna be a coveted
- 32:18Speaker 4: arm that's gonna cost money, and it just doesn't seem
- 32:21Speaker 4: like a fit for the Cardinals. It's weird when you're
- 32:24Speaker 4: in that position and it's your first time being a
- 32:25Speaker 4: free agent, and maybe even your third or fourth time,
- 32:28Speaker 4: you have to be politically correct. The great thing about
- 32:31Speaker 4: not playing anymore and not having him to answer it
- 32:33Speaker 4: anyone is I don't have to be politically correct, and
- 32:36Speaker 4: they ain't calling, buddy, I'm sorry.
- 32:40Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I don't see them calling either, And that
