- 3:09Speaker 1: just really really helps our little pod get noticed. So
- 3:14Speaker 1: now I'm going to tell you all right off the bed.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Tonight's case is going to be an extremely sad one.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I already was crying when I was writing my closing
- 3:24Speaker 1: thoughts behind stage. I honestly, I don't know how I'm
- 3:29Speaker 1: going to get through this one without crying and probably
- 3:30Speaker 1: not so grab some clean exes. It's not going to
- 3:34Speaker 1: be a long show, but it's going to be an
- 3:36Speaker 1: impactful one, that's for sure. There are two movies that
- 3:40Speaker 1: have lived in many of our millennial minds for decades,
- 3:44Speaker 1: The Land Before Time and All Dogs Go to Heaven.
- 3:48Speaker 1: If those two movies weren't emotionally devastating enough to our
- 3:52Speaker 1: child hearts, it would be well into our adulthood before
- 3:55Speaker 1: we learn the true devastating tale of Judith Arci, our
- 4:02Speaker 1: favorite Ducky and Anne Marie. I'm already you go, you go,
- 4:09Speaker 1: because I didn't even make it. We're not even like
- 4:11Speaker 1: two minutes in.
- 4:12Speaker 2: I'm like, I don't have tissues, all of got my blanket. Well,
- 4:16Speaker 2: let me tell you what I'm drinking. I am drinking
- 4:20Speaker 2: sparkling water because I decided I need to give my
- 4:24Speaker 2: liver a vacation after all of the wine in Champagne
- 4:28Speaker 2: I consumed on my travels.
- 4:29Speaker 1: That's fair, that's fair. Well, I'm not drinking tonight either,
- 4:34Speaker 1: So it's a rare true crime and scuber time episode.
- 4:37Speaker 1: I got me a coke for tonight, and I got
- 4:40Speaker 1: Core early in the morning to cover.
- 4:42Speaker 2: So it's not one of the cokes that got recalled,
- 4:45Speaker 2: is it. No, they've even all Coca Colas in Texas
- 4:50Speaker 2: for having metal shavings or something in the cans.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Oh well, no, I don't know.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Okay, Well, if you feel anything, scratch your neck when
- 5:00Speaker 2: it goes down, Oh you'll know there's something in it. Okay, Okay, Sorry,
- 5:05Speaker 2: I'm trying to avoid going any further tonight in miss Well.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Now, before we do get into this show, though, we
- 5:13Speaker 1: do have a quick update for all you listeners. It's
- 5:16Speaker 1: kind of something news this week. A few months ago,
- 5:19Speaker 1: we did a three part deep dive into the case
- 5:22Speaker 1: of Aton Pates, who went missing over thirty five years ago,
- 5:26Speaker 1: and we covered the two trials of Pedro Hernandez, who
- 5:29Speaker 1: allegedly was his killer. We both had our very strong
- 5:34Speaker 1: opinions in that three part series that Pedro was factually
- 5:40Speaker 1: innocent and that he was a political pawn, if.
- 5:45Speaker 2: You will, he was. Now in July of this year,
- 5:49Speaker 2: he was granted a new trial. Now, earlier this week,
- 5:53Speaker 2: it was announced that the state of New York had
- 5:55Speaker 2: until June first, twenty twenty six to try him again,
- 6:00Speaker 2: meaning guys like jury selection has to start that day
- 6:05Speaker 2: or Pedro would immediately be released from prison. Now, we
- 6:10Speaker 2: will be keeping an eye on any and all updates
- 6:13Speaker 2: that come out regarding this case. Now, if you're unfamiliar
- 6:16Speaker 2: with it, please go and watch our previous episodes of
- 6:20Speaker 2: the Milk Carton that Changed America, the Aton Pete story,
- 6:26Speaker 2: because we're gonna need it. And I'm sure if it
- 6:28Speaker 2: does go to just New York livestream trial.
- 6:31Speaker 1: No they don't, no, But I'll figure out a way.
- 6:35Speaker 1: We'll figure out a way to cover it because.
- 6:37Speaker 2: I know somebody that I can be in their guest
- 6:42Speaker 2: room for free.
- 6:43Speaker 1: So there you go, because all I need to be
- 6:46Speaker 1: on this trial they do.
- 6:47Speaker 2: In my opinion, he was railroaded.
- 6:50Speaker 1: It is, yeah, agreed, So Pedro free. We don't know
- 6:56Speaker 1: it wasn't him anyway though, But we wanted to share
- 7:00Speaker 1: that update with you because it's not very often that
- 7:02Speaker 1: the cases we cover on True Crime and My Time
- 7:05Speaker 1: of updates, so we definitely wanted to share that. But
- 7:08Speaker 1: you know what, with that, let's get into the story
- 7:11Speaker 1: of sweet little Judith Barci.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Here we go, Darry, get your blanket ready. So Maria
- 7:21Speaker 2: v Rovok and Joseph Barci, both of them, had fled
- 7:25Speaker 2: Hungary separately after the nineteen sixty five Soviet invasion. Now,
- 7:31Speaker 2: on paper, guys, that sounds like the setup for sweeping
- 7:34Speaker 2: immigrant love story. I mean right, two people from the
- 7:38Speaker 2: same country, both chasing freedom, finding each other across the world.
- 7:44Speaker 2: But spoiler alert, this is true crime and Mine Time.
- 7:47Speaker 2: It is not a rom com. No, we would not
- 7:50Speaker 2: be covering it if it was a sweet love story.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, Maria grew up in a quiet university town
- 7:56Speaker 1: in the South. Joseph a totally different story. He came
- 8:01Speaker 1: from a rough industrial city and called his childhood miserable.
- 8:06Speaker 1: He used to tell people that he didn't even have parents,
- 8:09Speaker 1: which in Hungary was basically like the biggest stigma you
- 8:14Speaker 1: could carry. Family was everything there. And later when he
- 8:19Speaker 1: and Maria thought she'd use this as Ammo calling him
- 8:23Speaker 1: a bastard. Friends say it cut him deep, and yeah,
- 8:27Speaker 1: you can already feel the cracks starting to show here
- 8:31Speaker 1: in this relationship.
- 8:33Speaker 2: That's exact. I'm going to just go on record and
- 8:35Speaker 2: say that is not the sign of a healthy relationship.
- 8:39Speaker 2: I mean, we all get mad and we say things
- 8:41Speaker 2: that we shouldn't, but that's definitely show on some cracks.
- 8:46Speaker 1: She wasn't wrong, She wasn't wrong.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Now they ended up meeting in Los Angeles at this
- 8:52Speaker 2: restaurant that was the spot for Hungarian immigrants. Now, Maria
- 8:57Speaker 2: was working as a waitress in Joseph Dark brooting the
- 9:02Speaker 2: kind of guy who sits at the bar with his
- 9:04Speaker 2: head down. He was there that he was paying for
- 9:06Speaker 2: his drinks with one hundred dollars bills. I mean, guys,
- 9:10Speaker 2: and listen, Maria was impressed.
- 9:13Speaker 1: I mean.
- 9:15Speaker 2: I would be impressed. Now, she thought this guy nicknamed
- 9:20Speaker 2: Arizona Joe because he'd lived there for a while, might
- 9:24Speaker 2: actually give her some security. So on paper, not the
- 9:29Speaker 2: worst start.
- 9:30Speaker 1: You know, he had money, yeah, I mean, could have
- 9:33Speaker 1: had a better nickname. But ever, but also laying down
- 9:39Speaker 1: hundreds during the seventies, and eighties. Is that's that's a
- 9:43Speaker 1: big deal, all right. That's not the same as like
- 9:45Speaker 1: Lee It thrown down of Benjamin right now, now, big deal.
- 9:50Speaker 1: So and Joe worked as a plumber, and he kept
- 9:53Speaker 1: right at it even years later when his daughter's Hollywood
- 9:56Speaker 1: money was rolling in. At first the marriage, actually I
- 10:00Speaker 1: looked happy, and friends said Joe could be downright charming.
- 10:05Speaker 1: But as you've already guessed, charm was only half the story.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Kyle had a temper. Oh wait, that's my ex husband. Nevermind.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Joe had a temper. And when I say temper, I
- 10:20Speaker 2: mean it was hair trigger. And if he mixed an alcohol,
- 10:24Speaker 2: forget it. Okay, if even thought someone was laughing at
- 10:28Speaker 2: his accent, he would snap One of his plumber buddies.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Peter Kivlin remembered him grabbing a two by four, then
- 10:37Speaker 2: quickly added not that he did go after anyone who
- 10:40Speaker 2: didn't deserve it.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Well, well, Kevilyn, I hate to tell you that he
- 10:45Speaker 1: most certainly went after his wife and daughter who didn't
- 10:47Speaker 1: deserve it, but we'll get to that later. This guy
- 10:53Speaker 1: today has just been a day for me and just shit.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Bad guys. I'm sorry, I know.
- 10:59Speaker 2: I mean that prevised of me to call up my ex.
- 11:02Speaker 2: But anytime I see that hair trigger now just triggers me.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Now. Joe also liked to spend tall tales and loved
- 11:10Speaker 1: playing the tough guy. He'd bragged that he lost vision
- 11:14Speaker 1: in one eye during a fight, or that he killed
- 11:17Speaker 1: a man in a New York brawl. Very tough guy
- 11:21Speaker 1: energy he had. But if you actually checked, Nope, no
- 11:25Speaker 1: record of that. Now. What is on record though, is
- 11:28Speaker 1: three or rest for drunk driving. So not actually like
- 11:33Speaker 1: exactly like outlaw material. But okay, buddy.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm going to just say I think I'm not
- 11:42Speaker 2: a fan of Joseph. Okay, now, So yeah, Marie and
- 11:47Speaker 2: Joe came to America with this big immigrant dream, but
- 11:52Speaker 2: their reality was different. It was very toxic, constant fighting, drinking, insults,
- 11:59Speaker 2: just a cycle that kept spiraling. And the saddest part,
- 12:04Speaker 2: all of that poison didn't just stay between the two
- 12:06Speaker 2: of them. It ended up falling hardest on the one
- 12:10Speaker 2: person who deserved none of it, and that is their
- 12:14Speaker 2: sweet little.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Daughter, Judith.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Yes, I know that look on her face right there,
- 12:20Speaker 2: She's like, I don't want to take this picture, and
- 12:23Speaker 2: who cut my hair like this?
- 12:25Speaker 1: Who gave me the bangs.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Who did buy hair like this?
- 12:29Speaker 1: What a cutie? What a cutie now. Judith Barci was
- 12:34Speaker 1: born on June sixth, nineteen seventy eight. She is the
- 12:38Speaker 1: only child of Maria and Joseph Barsi, and from the
- 12:41Speaker 1: very start, her mom had big plans. Oh my god,
- 12:45Speaker 1: how cute is that picture of her?
- 12:47Speaker 2: Oh that wouldn't stay her as much cute.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Now. Maria immediately began training Judith for a Hollywood career,
- 12:57Speaker 1: and if you think she was realistic, well not exactly
- 13:02Speaker 1: quote I said, I wouldn't waste my time. Her uncle,
- 13:06Speaker 1: Joseph Weldon later said, I told her the chances are
- 13:09Speaker 1: one in ten thousand that she was succeeded. But you
- 13:14Speaker 1: couldn't tell Maria nothing.
- 13:17Speaker 2: No, you could not, because guess what, she was not
- 13:20Speaker 2: listening to odds, and somehow she proved him wrong. I
- 13:24Speaker 2: like to think she's like me, you tell me I
- 13:25Speaker 2: can't do something, I'm going to do it. But look
- 13:28Speaker 2: at that picture. She's so cute. Now. All those lessons
- 13:32Speaker 2: and posture, poise and voice they paid off. Accidentally, guy.
- 13:38Speaker 2: One day, when Judith was just five, she was skating
- 13:41Speaker 2: in an ice rink, not acting just skating, okay, But
- 13:46Speaker 2: a commercial crew noticed this tiny, pictious girl gliding across
- 13:50Speaker 2: the ice and thought, yep, she's perfect, and just like
- 13:55Speaker 2: that she got hired.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Yeah. From there things started snow. Judith became a successful
- 14:02Speaker 1: commercial actress, and part of her secret weapon was that
- 14:06Speaker 1: she looked much younger than she really was. Her agent,
- 14:10Speaker 1: Ruth Hansen, said that when Judith was ten, she was
- 14:14Speaker 1: still playing seven or eight year olds, which is a
- 14:16Speaker 1: very big deal in Hollywood.
- 14:18Speaker 2: That's a big deal.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Now, she was short for her age, only three feet
- 14:23Speaker 1: eight inches, just a little, a little bity thing. She
- 14:26Speaker 1: was a little elf, I know, right, a little. She
- 14:31Speaker 1: was getting injections at UCLA to help her grow, which
- 14:35Speaker 1: is something many kids have to do.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Essex, I believe Rutcrime Ji yeah, rue Crime had that done. Now.
- 14:46Speaker 2: By the time she was hitting double digits, Judith had
- 14:49Speaker 2: appeared in seventy two commercials.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Okay, look at that one, And do you guys remember
- 14:54Speaker 1: that because I do. Oh yes, well before I was around,
- 14:58Speaker 1: but I remember that still seeing it even.
- 15:03Speaker 2: I'm trying to remember the Wales name and I can't
- 15:04Speaker 2: remember the shammou thank you.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I'm like you, I don't know if that is shamu.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Oh wow, I went out for Willy Trainer. No, free
- 15:12Speaker 2: Willy wasn't out yet.
- 15:13Speaker 1: No, I don't sake, No, it wasn't.
- 15:15Speaker 2: But guys, she didn't stop there. Okay. She was taking
- 15:19Speaker 2: on TV and movie roles too. Okay. She appeared in
- 15:23Speaker 2: shows like Growing Pains, Cheers, Remington Still, and even in
- 15:28Speaker 2: the TV movie Fatal Vision, where she played a child
- 15:33Speaker 2: murdered by her father. Yeah, and yes, she was also
- 15:38Speaker 2: in the film Jaws The Revenge. Now for Captain, we
- 15:43Speaker 2: need to point out that that is a really good movie, okay,
- 15:46Speaker 2: because she was very upset that we were not giving
- 15:49Speaker 2: it the recognition it deserves.
- 15:50Speaker 1: I like Jaws for the Revenge. I'm a big fan
- 15:54Speaker 1: of Jaws for the Revenge. Love that Jaws one and four,
- 15:58Speaker 1: did not care for.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Three and two. Yeah. Now, not quite a household name,
- 16:04Speaker 2: but she was making serious money around one hundred thousand
- 16:08Speaker 2: a year, which helped her parents by a modest three
- 16:11Speaker 2: bedroom house in West Hills in nineteen eighty five. And guys,
- 16:16Speaker 2: nineteen eighty five money, that's a lot of money.
- 16:19Speaker 1: That's a lot.
- 16:22Speaker 2: That is a lot. I don't know what it would
- 16:23Speaker 2: be today, but that's a lot of money.
- 16:26Speaker 1: A lot, I mean, I mean it's crazy now. Unfortunately, though,
- 16:32Speaker 1: her acting career came with a cost. Though now, school
- 16:36Speaker 1: often took a back seat to auditions in filming. Former
- 16:40Speaker 1: classmate Lisa Williams remembered she missed being in school because
- 16:45Speaker 1: she missed her friends a lot. But when Judah did
- 16:49Speaker 1: have free time, she was polite and charming, and Lisa's mom, Linda,
- 16:53Speaker 1: said her mother had taught her to be so polite.
- 16:58Speaker 1: She'd even come over to swim and their pools sometimes,
- 17:01Speaker 1: this tiny professional and a little blond body with like
- 17:06Speaker 1: some magical manager celebrity. She's just so freaking cute.
- 17:13Speaker 2: You can't help but smile. You can't help but smile
- 17:17Speaker 2: when you look at her.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:19Speaker 2: So, in classic La fashion, Judith Barci's big break didn't
- 17:24Speaker 2: come from auditions or agent calls. It came from a
- 17:27Speaker 2: skating rink, Okay, just gliding, looking effortless and catching the
- 17:32Speaker 2: eye of someone who saw talent before it even knew
- 17:36Speaker 2: it was talent.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Yeah, just an amazing Hollywood story, you know. So it's
- 17:43Speaker 1: like three hundred thousand dollars today for a ten year old,
- 17:47Speaker 1: For a ten year old, you know and her dad
- 17:49Speaker 1: was still working as a plumber like the whole time,
- 17:52Speaker 1: so that he should be because that was her money,
- 17:54Speaker 1: not his, but true to go there. Oh, now that's
- 17:57Speaker 1: when we started getting into the not great stuff. And
- 18:00Speaker 1: oh that reminds me before I do get into that tonight.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Because this episode deals a lot with domestic violence, we
- 18:13Speaker 1: are going to put a banner at the bottom of
- 18:17Speaker 1: our screen that it's going to display a text number
- 18:23Speaker 1: you can text or the number for a twenty four
- 18:26Speaker 1: to seven domestic violence hotline at the bottom. That way,
- 18:32Speaker 1: if you need help to get out of a situation,
- 18:35Speaker 1: please call and do just know you're never ever alone
- 18:40Speaker 1: in that. And this is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. I
- 18:46Speaker 1: did not purposely plan this story for Actually, this one
- 18:51Speaker 1: got pushed back to now. It's supposed to come earlier.
- 18:53Speaker 1: But so we'll have that scrolling down there if anybody
- 18:57Speaker 1: needs now, no one.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Fill a shame. It happens in every walk of life.
- 19:04Speaker 1: That's right. It is not like free of one demograph,
- 19:08Speaker 1: it is not. Now. The darkest most chilling figure in
- 19:14Speaker 1: this story is Joseph Barci. On paper, he said he
- 19:19Speaker 1: valued family above all else, Like I haven't heard that
- 19:23Speaker 1: already today. If you were in court with me, you'll know.
- 19:28Speaker 1: He once told his brother in law, quote, if the
- 19:30Speaker 1: family life is gone, then life is not worth living.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Sounds noble, right, but in reality, Joe ruled his household
- 19:40Speaker 1: with an iron tongue, not fists. Words were his weapon
- 19:44Speaker 1: of choice, and sometimes words can cut just as deep.
- 19:51Speaker 2: I actually just told my leader for the county thing
- 19:56Speaker 2: yesterday that I personally think words her worse than the
- 20:00Speaker 2: fist because they last longer and they live in your
- 20:03Speaker 2: head forever.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Mm, yes, man, I do so, I agree.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Now. By the mid nineteen eighties, his marriage to Maria
- 20:13Speaker 2: was crumbling. Years of drinking, years of bitterness, years of grudges.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Maria refused to just let go of them, so Joseph Wealden,
- 20:23Speaker 2: her brother, said that the fights had left the marriage
- 20:27Speaker 2: in tatters.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Yeah. And then there was the horrifying moment with Judith.
- 20:34Speaker 1: She was preparing to leave La for the Bahamas to
- 20:37Speaker 1: fill film draws the revenge, Joe pulled a knife on
- 20:43Speaker 1: his ten year old daughter and said, quote, if you
- 20:47Speaker 1: decide not to come back, I will cut your throat.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Can you imagine a little girl terrified just trying to
- 20:58Speaker 1: follow her dreams threatened by the one person who should
- 21:04Speaker 1: have protected her and been supporting her.
- 21:06Speaker 2: And no, I mean, what in the actual hell who
- 21:12Speaker 2: says that, whether you're the parent or not to a child.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Oh and guys, earlier I said I don't think I
- 21:18Speaker 2: like Joe as if I'm going to just tell y'all
- 21:20Speaker 2: it's awful and I really do not like himing bit
- 21:23Speaker 2: he is a piece of shit.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Yeah, And this story doesn't get better.
- 21:28Speaker 2: It doesn't. So. Even as a child, Judith was known
- 21:32Speaker 2: as bubbly, happy, full of life. Her agent, Ruth Hansen,
- 21:36Speaker 2: remembered how the little girl's mood changed in her last
- 21:40Speaker 2: year of filming. Joe had refused an airline ticket to
- 21:43Speaker 2: visit Judith during Jaws the Revenge filming, yet he raged
- 21:48Speaker 2: at her departure in one call from New York to
- 21:52Speaker 2: the family, terrified Judith. When he reminded her, he said,
- 21:57Speaker 2: remember what I told you before you left, and she
- 22:01Speaker 2: ran crying to her bedroom.
- 22:04Speaker 1: I'm a pigtail picture of her, so freaking cute now.
- 22:09Speaker 1: When she returned home two months later, the ras and
- 22:13Speaker 1: Joe hadn't cooled. Judith's distress was so intense that she
- 22:19Speaker 1: began plucking out her eyelashes and even her cat's whiskers
- 22:25Speaker 1: just to cope. Her mother confided to neighbors that Joe
- 22:29Speaker 1: became abusive and threatening when he drank, and that she
- 22:33Speaker 1: was thinking about filing for divorce and moving into a
- 22:37Speaker 1: daytime refuge she'd rented, But Maria hesitated. She had worked
- 22:43Speaker 1: so hard for Judith's career, you know, leaving the house
- 22:47Speaker 1: and the life they built just felt impossible.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Hey, guys, I want to remind everybody. We need to
- 22:54Speaker 2: remember that it's hard for women to make the decision
- 22:58Speaker 2: to leave an abuser. It sounds easy, but it's not. Guys.
- 23:03Speaker 2: They literally tell her down every ounce of your self esteem, everything.
- 23:09Speaker 2: So just remember that it's not an easy decision to make.
- 23:13Speaker 1: And it's sure. Shit wasn't easy in the seventies and eight.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Do you think it's hard now?
- 23:17Speaker 2: Yeah? Now. A few days before the tragedy, Maria told
- 23:24Speaker 2: neighbor Enis Daily, I can't leave because he'll come after us.
- 23:29Speaker 2: He's threatened to burn the house down, and she was
- 23:32Speaker 2: trying to stay one step ahead, cashing judas twelve thousand
- 23:36Speaker 2: dollars federal tax refund check before Joe could get to it.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Friends and colleagues remember Joe as obsessively controlling. Peter Kevilyn,
- 23:48Speaker 1: who we mentioned earlier. His friend and fellow plumbers, said
- 23:51Speaker 1: Joe told him five hundred times that he was going
- 23:55Speaker 1: to kill his wife. I know that's very different than
- 23:58Speaker 1: the statement he said earlier. I don't understand why they're
- 24:00Speaker 1: that different, but they were. And when Keviln Warren quote,
- 24:04Speaker 1: if you kill her, what will happen to your little one?
- 24:07Speaker 1: Joe's response, I got to kill her too. Little one
- 24:13Speaker 1: was Judith. Of course that was his name for her,
- 24:16Speaker 1: which if you watched Land Before Time, that's what Littlefoot's
- 24:20Speaker 1: mom says. Anyway, consumed by rage, that is exactly what
- 24:27Speaker 1: he did.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Now, I want to know, do we know if Peter
- 24:32Speaker 2: ever called the police or anyone and told them, because
- 24:37Speaker 2: five hundred times, even if it was only fifty times,
- 24:40Speaker 2: that's a lot.
- 24:42Speaker 1: No, I don't believe. So.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Now, the pattern of abuse was relentless threats, intimidation, alternating
- 24:52Speaker 2: promises of violence towards his wife or even his daughter.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Neighbors witnessed his controlling behavior first, and one neighbor recalled
- 25:02Speaker 2: how Judas's father smashed a kite her mother had bought
- 25:05Speaker 2: her just because Judith wasn't sharing it properly, Joe sometimes
- 25:12Speaker 2: saying he would kill his wife, others times saying he
- 25:15Speaker 2: would kill himself in Judith and leave Maria alive to suffer.
- 25:20Speaker 2: He's really a piece of shit.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Guys, Yeah he is. Now. Maria did try to protect
- 25:27Speaker 1: her daughter. She filed a police report in December nineteen
- 25:31Speaker 1: eighty six for threats and physical abuse, but without visible injuries.
- 25:38Speaker 1: She eventually declined to prosecute. Joe had quit drinking two
- 25:43Speaker 1: years prior, but the damage was done. His wife wouldn't
- 25:48Speaker 1: forgive him, and he couldn't let go. He turned to
- 25:52Speaker 1: another woman, showered her with gifts, and all the while
- 25:55Speaker 1: though little Judath's distress grew.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Yeah, now, guys, I have to say, unless Joseph got
- 26:03Speaker 2: help and therapy, I can tell you that just stopping
- 26:06Speaker 2: drinking did not change him, and he was now what
- 26:10Speaker 2: some would call a sober drunk because the alcohol just
- 26:14Speaker 2: made it worse, you know exactly now. Industry friends and
- 26:19Speaker 2: neighbors tried to help, even offering refuge, but Maria hesitated,
- 26:25Speaker 2: wanting to protect her daughter while holding on to the
- 26:28Speaker 2: life and home that built through Judas career.
- 26:33Speaker 1: By May, Judith was so distraught that she couldn't even
- 26:37Speaker 1: attend an audition. Her agent, Ruth Hansen, finally stepped in,
- 26:43Speaker 1: urging Maria to take her daughter to a psychologist. The
- 26:47Speaker 1: therapist refused to discuss the case with Ruth for good reason,
- 26:52Speaker 1: but Hansen said she called after one visit and said, Ruth,
- 26:57Speaker 1: it is extreme verbal, mental and emotional problems with this
- 27:01Speaker 1: child and I have to report it to Children's Services.
- 27:07Speaker 1: That's you know. They didn't have hippat this time.
- 27:11Speaker 2: By the way, A spokesperson from Children's Services said, Maria
- 27:17Speaker 2: Barci told them she had a plan of action she
- 27:20Speaker 2: felt safe with and so the agency let her carry
- 27:24Speaker 2: it out. That involved eventually, you know, separating from her husband.
- 27:30Speaker 2: But Ruth Hansen said the mother described a different encounter
- 27:33Speaker 2: with the case worker. She said they weren't going to
- 27:36Speaker 2: do anything, and so she said, I guess I'll have
- 27:40Speaker 2: to handle it myself.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Which that is sometimes what happens. It is, you know. Now.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Maria Barci's plan of action involved moving to a Panorama
- 27:55Speaker 1: City apartment, which she started renting in May. She would
- 27:59Speaker 1: spend her days there with her daughter, then return home
- 28:03Speaker 1: at night. But even that plan was fraught. Maria was
- 28:07Speaker 1: still hesitant to leave the neighborhood and still torn between
- 28:11Speaker 1: her daughter's safety and the home they had built. Family
- 28:16Speaker 1: friends spoke darkly of Judas's home life, quote, I'm afraid
- 28:21Speaker 1: to go home. My daddy is miserable. My daddy is
- 28:26Speaker 1: drunk every day, and I know he wants to kill
- 28:30Speaker 1: my mother. Judath said.
- 28:36Speaker 2: I'm sorry a child, saying that a child should never
- 28:41Speaker 2: say those words. I'm sorry.
- 28:42Speaker 1: They shouldn't they should never have to be robed.
- 28:48Speaker 2: And then came the final fateful days. Monday, July twenty fifth,
- 28:53Speaker 2: Judith missed an appointment at Anna Barbara Productions, Inc. Joe
- 28:58Speaker 2: said a car took Marie and Judith away for the
- 29:01Speaker 2: day of San Diego. That night, Joe made a chilling
- 29:05Speaker 2: call to Ruth Hansen, saying he had decided to move out,
- 29:10Speaker 2: but only after saying goodbye to his little girl.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Sometime during a mysterious four day span ending Wednesday, July
- 29:20Speaker 1: twenty seventh, nineteen eighty eight, police believe Joseph Barci followed
- 29:27Speaker 1: through on threats he'd been making for at least five years.
- 29:31Speaker 1: He shot and killed his wife and daughter before turning
- 29:35Speaker 1: the gun on himself.
- 29:39Speaker 2: Now. Around eight thirty am that Wednesday, neighbor Enis Daley
- 29:44Speaker 2: was tending to her garden when she heard what sounded
- 29:47Speaker 2: like an explosion next door.
- 29:50Speaker 1: I heard a loud bang and saw smoke rising from
- 29:53Speaker 1: the house, she recalled. My first thought as I ran
- 29:57Speaker 1: to call nine one one was he's done it. He's
- 30:00Speaker 1: killed them and set the house on fire, just like
- 30:04Speaker 1: he said he would.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Another neighbor, Michael Cutt, grabbed Daily's garden hose and tried
- 30:11Speaker 2: to enter through a sliding door at the back of
- 30:14Speaker 2: the house, but the thick smoke forced him back.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Emergency crews soon arrived at the home on the twenty
- 30:23Speaker 1: to one zero zero block of McHale Street. Inside, investigators
- 30:29Speaker 1: discovered a horrific scene. Joseph Barci, fifty five, had shot
- 30:35Speaker 1: his forty eight year old wife Maria and their eleven
- 30:38Speaker 1: year old daughter, Judith. He then drenched their bodies in
- 30:43Speaker 1: gasoline and set them on fire before going to the
- 30:46Speaker 1: garage and fatally shooting himself with a thirty two caliber pistol.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Now, the fire consumed much of the home's interior, but
- 30:59Speaker 2: Judas body was found in her canopy bed and Marie's
- 31:03Speaker 2: in the hallway. Both had been shot once in the head.
- 31:08Speaker 2: It appears a flammable liquid was poured on the child
- 31:11Speaker 2: or her bed, said police Lieutenant Warren Bowles.
- 31:16Speaker 1: The pistol was still clutched in the father's hand and
- 31:20Speaker 1: a gas can laying a few feet away due to
- 31:24Speaker 1: small pink television and one her father had given her
- 31:28Speaker 1: to make amends after once yanking her hair in anger,
- 31:33Speaker 1: stood beside her bed, untouched by the flames.
- 31:39Speaker 2: Now. The day after the murders, Bonnie Gold, a spokeswoman
- 31:43Speaker 2: for the Studio City Talent agency that represented Judith, reflected
- 31:48Speaker 2: on the young actress's extraordinary promise. She was very successful,
- 31:53Speaker 2: with every door open to her. Gold said, there's no
- 31:57Speaker 2: telling how far she would have gone. She was adorable,
- 32:02Speaker 2: quite precocious, blonde and blue blue eyed, recalled former neighbor
- 32:08Speaker 2: Adrie and Conway. I can't believe he would do this,
- 32:11Speaker 2: she said.
- 32:13Speaker 1: No. Why would a father kill the child he supposedly adored?
- 32:19Speaker 1: Was it a final twisted act of control? I guess
- 32:25Speaker 1: maybe he felt that possessiveness, said detective Sandra Palmer, who
- 32:30Speaker 1: investigated the case. If I can't have her, nobody's going
- 32:34Speaker 1: to have her. Others offered a more tragic theory that
- 32:39Speaker 1: Joseph couldn't bear the thought of leaving Judith alone after
- 32:44Speaker 1: killing her mother and himself.
- 32:48Speaker 2: Now, Judah's final role Wasn't All Dogs Go to Heaven?
- 32:53Speaker 2: Where she voiced Anne Marie, a sweet orphan who could
- 32:56Speaker 2: talk to animals. The film was released after her death,
- 33:00Speaker 2: giving her voice a hunting kind of immortality.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Oh my god, this is Burt's rough guys Now. In
- 33:10Speaker 1: June twenty twenty four, a viral TikTok reignited interest in
- 33:15Speaker 1: the tragedy by suggesting a deeper layer of the movie's
- 33:20Speaker 1: emotional final scene. Whether or not this is true, I
- 33:24Speaker 1: don't know, but the creator claimed that Burt Reynolds, who
- 33:28Speaker 1: voiced Charlie, the dog that Anne Marie is hugging there
- 33:32Speaker 1: in the poster, recorded his goodbye scene to Anne Marie
- 33:39Speaker 1: privately with only an audio engineer present.
- 33:52Speaker 2: I'm sorry they lost count of how many takes it
- 33:56Speaker 2: to Burt Reynolds to get through the scene without breaking down.
- 34:00Speaker 2: The creator said it wasn't Charlie saying goodbye to Anton Marie,
- 34:05Speaker 2: it was Burt Reynolds saying goodbye to Judith. Barci hmm. Now.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Reynolds has never publicly commented on the recording, but the
- 34:15Speaker 2: story only deep in the heartbreak surrounding judas death. Charlie,
- 34:22Speaker 2: Will I ever see you again?
- 34:24Speaker 1: Sure? Sure you will again? You know goodbye is on forever?
- 34:30Speaker 1: Then goodbye, Charlie. I love you? Yeah you? Oh my god,
- 34:42Speaker 1: I can't even in case you've never seen the movie.
- 34:51Speaker 1: As I said at the beginning, Land before Time and
- 34:53Speaker 1: all dogs go to heaven, will break your hearts, say
- 34:56Speaker 1: break your heart. And then you add this on top
- 34:59Speaker 1: of of that, and it's it's something now. The murders
- 35:06Speaker 1: of Judith and her mother sent shock waves through Hollywood
- 35:10Speaker 1: and beyond, exposing painful gaps in the system meant to
- 35:14Speaker 1: protect victims of domestic abuse. Despite numerous reports of Joseph's
- 35:21Speaker 1: violent behavior, officials said there wasn't enough evidence to remove
- 35:26Speaker 1: Judith from the home.
- 35:29Speaker 2: Now, this is part of the whole problem, said Helen Kleinberg,
- 35:33Speaker 2: a member of the Los Angeles Counting Commission for Children's Services. Sorry, guys,
- 35:38Speaker 2: my dogs are losing their mind. It's easy to focus
- 35:42Speaker 2: on physical abuse because we can see it now.
- 35:46Speaker 1: The case sparked outrage and renewed efforts to reform how
- 35:52Speaker 1: authorities respond to emotional and psychological abuse, often invisible but
- 35:59Speaker 1: just as devastating. How do we protect someone from threats
- 36:04Speaker 1: we really honestly can't. Detective Palmer told the Los Angeles Times,
- 36:10Speaker 1: I could say I'm going to kill you, and I
- 36:13Speaker 1: have that right and a free society to say that.
- 36:16Speaker 1: What I don't have, though, is the right to carry
- 36:19Speaker 1: it out.
- 36:21Speaker 2: I'm going to just go on record and say I
- 36:25Speaker 2: think you never have the right to say you're going
- 36:27Speaker 2: to kill a child ever. Ever.
- 36:34Speaker 1: I mean, I don't see how you could ever even
- 36:37Speaker 1: just see it in the first place.
- 36:41Speaker 2: Now. In September nineteen eighty eight, Robert L. Chaffee, director
- 36:46Speaker 2: of the Department of Children's Services, and formed the Los
- 36:50Speaker 2: Angeles County Board of Supervisors that his agency would strengthen
- 36:54Speaker 2: training on the dangerous domestic violence possesses to children.
- 37:02Speaker 1: From then on, caseworkers were also required to notify mandatory
- 37:08Speaker 1: reporters such as therapist, when cases they had reported were closed,
- 37:14Speaker 1: a safeguard inspired by the tragic fact that judas therapist
- 37:18Speaker 1: was never informed that her case had been dropped.
- 37:26Speaker 2: Now, Judith Barcie and her mother were laid to rest
- 37:30Speaker 2: at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills Cemetery, but for many years
- 37:34Speaker 2: their graves remained unmarked. With no surviving family to make
- 37:40Speaker 2: formal arrangements, the two were buried without the headstones.
- 37:45Speaker 1: Which I just I can't even I can't even believe that.
- 37:47Speaker 2: I I can't. And then, yeah, we.
- 37:53Speaker 1: Haven't all their family money, like really, I'm sure. Now.
- 37:59Speaker 1: It wasn't until two thousand and four that fans from
- 38:04Speaker 1: around the world came together through an online fundraiser to
- 38:10Speaker 1: give them a proper memorial.
- 38:15Speaker 2: Sorry, it always gets me when people do really nice
- 38:20Speaker 2: things and for no reason. They didn't do it for publicity.
- 38:26Speaker 2: They did it because they were just good people and
- 38:28Speaker 2: they wanted to honor this little girl.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Now, the headstone now bears an inscription from one of
- 38:35Speaker 1: Judas's most beloved roles, her Land Before Time character ducky.
- 38:42Speaker 2: Edge.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Beneath their names are the simple, joyful words that define
- 38:46Speaker 1: her performance. Yep, yep, yep, a fitting tribute to a
- 38:51Speaker 1: bright talent whose voice continues to echo long after her passing.
- 38:58Speaker 1: Oh shit, oh man, oh damn cap and with that picture, shit,
- 39:07Speaker 1: it's beautiful. She Okay, sorry, y'all, we told you you
- 39:14Speaker 1: were gonna need Kleenexes. This is a really it's a real,
- 39:18Speaker 1: real sad one.
- 39:19Speaker 2: I think so many people failed this little girl.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Yeah, now, this story is just so sad. Sweet little Judith.
- 39:31Speaker 1: She never got the chance to see the movies she
- 39:33Speaker 1: was in. She never got the chance to be adored
- 39:37Speaker 1: by the millions of children who imitated her infamous yep, yep, yep,
- 39:42Speaker 1: yep daily We all got to grow up, But sweet
- 39:46Speaker 1: little Judith will forever be a little girl. I especially
- 39:51Speaker 1: named this episode all Duckies Go to Heaven for her
- 39:54Speaker 1: and her memory. Thank you, Judith for being a part
- 39:58Speaker 1: of my childhood, and I hope you know you are
- 40:01Speaker 1: loved and impacted so many of us even with your
- 40:05Speaker 1: short time here on earth.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Oh well, guys, I have to be honest. I hate
- 40:16Speaker 2: everything about this case except for Marie and Judith. I mean,
- 40:22Speaker 2: the story of Judas's life breaks something deep inside me.
- 40:27Speaker 2: She seemed to be just a sweet, bright and talented
- 40:30Speaker 2: little girl who had a full life ahead of her,
- 40:35Speaker 2: and she experienced so much tragedy even before our tragic death.
- 40:42Speaker 2: But sadly, her mother was trapped in a cycle of abuse,
- 40:46Speaker 2: and she, truly, I think tried the best she knew
- 40:48Speaker 2: how to handle the situation. And guys, I hate that
- 40:52Speaker 2: Joseph was such a coward. I wish she would not
- 40:55Speaker 2: have been successful in killing himself and that he would
- 40:58Speaker 2: have been punished and put in jail for life. Because, guys,
- 41:04Speaker 2: the betrayal by the man who's supposed to protect and
- 41:08Speaker 2: love you is something I can't even put words to,
- 41:15Speaker 2: but I do think this should remind all of us
- 41:18Speaker 2: that no one knows exactly what's going on behind closed doors.
- 41:21Speaker 2: We should never judge women who find themselves in this situation.
- 41:25Speaker 2: And as I say on Midday Missing, if you see something,
- 41:28Speaker 2: say something, don't be scared to report something like this. Thankfully,
- 41:36Speaker 2: there are many agencies and nonprofits that can help you.
- 41:40Speaker 2: If you are in an abusive situation. You can call
- 41:43Speaker 2: the National Domestic Copline one eight hundred and seventy nine
- 41:47Speaker 2: nine seven two three three, or you can text start
- 41:50Speaker 2: to eight eight seven eight eight. Guys, they're available twenty
- 41:55Speaker 2: four hours a day, three hundred and sixty five days
- 41:58Speaker 2: a year, and they have people who speak every language.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Yep, yep, yep, yep. And I wish we had more
- 42:11Speaker 1: story to share with you, but sadly we don't because
- 42:15Speaker 1: that's all there was. Because it was it was long
- 42:20Speaker 1: ago and she wasn't around for very long. So unfortunately
- 42:25Speaker 1: that is that is what we have for you tonight.
- 42:31Speaker 1: So sorry, we know it's a tear jerker and we're

- 42:45Speaker 1: other people as well. All right, now, before we go,

- 43:24Speaker 1: I don't think we've done an episode where it's a
- 43:28Speaker 1: bunch of little many stories, so I grow.
- 43:33Speaker 2: Whoever updated what I actually wrote, I was like, let
- 43:37Speaker 2: us not what I practice out.

- 45:09Speaker 2: recording them up until then, so be on the lookout
