- 0:00Hi everyone, Welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:09Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:12the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:16Welcome back to Mini Scroll, so I'm going to just jump right
- 0:20into it. I have no updates for you guys
- 0:22today. I have not watched any TV in the
- 0:24last couple days, so let's just get right into it.
- 0:28So the first story that I have for you guys is that the TikTok
- 0:31popular jewelry company, Every Jewels has called out an
- 0:35influencer for allegedly backing out of a collab.
- 0:38So Every Jewels is a popular jewelry brand on TikTok shop
- 0:41that grew to over 1,000,000 followers for selling really
- 0:44trendy pieces that look similar to jewelry that you might find
- 0:48on fast fashion sites like Amazon or Sheehan.
- 0:51At the end of March, the founder of Every Jewels posted a TikTok
- 0:54on the brand account. That said, quote when your
- 0:56jewelry brand signs a contract with an influencer to design a
- 0:59piece together last year and then you order and receive all
- 1:02the inventory and also inform their team about it.
- 1:05But she recently blew up and calls off the collab, so now
- 1:09you're out money and stuck with all the pieces.
- 1:12She went on to post a series of videos on the brand account
- 1:15explaining the situation, saying that the process of
- 1:18manufacturing the jewelry for this collab took longer than
- 1:20expected, but the influencers initials are all over the
- 1:23pieces, so now she can't sell those pieces.
- 1:27She did not name the influencer, but in one comment she said she
- 1:31might drop the name if the video got 1,000,000 views.
- 1:34This tipped people off that the whole story might be slightly
- 1:40off. The main 3 guesses as to who the
- 1:43influencer could have been are Tara Yummy, Alex Earl, and
- 1:47Brianna Chicken Fry. Every Jules did respond to a
- 1:50comment that guessed Brianna saying it wasn't her, but they
- 1:53did also insinuate that Brianna ghosted the brand when they were
- 1:57in the process of working on a collab together.
- 1:59So now a couple weeks on. The brand of course never
- 2:02actually revealed who the influencer was, despite saying
- 2:06they might if the video hit 1,000,000 views and these videos
- 2:09got millions of views. The owner said that she was
- 2:12advised against going public with the name by her legal team
- 2:15and instead will be dealing with the influencer privately, which
- 2:19in my opinion is probably what should have happened from the
- 2:21start. So this has led to speculation
- 2:24that the whole thing was just a hoax for virality basically at
- 2:29the influencers expense. And like I said, we don't know
- 2:32who the influencer was, if there even is an influencer, If this
- 2:35is just all made-up, who knows. But obviously, Tara, Alex and
- 2:39Brianna, I'm sure are getting tons of comments, possibly tons
- 2:43of hate for, you know, this kind of viral moment for this jewelry
- 2:47brand that if it is the truth, if this all did really happen,
- 2:51this absolutely should have been handled behind closed doors.
- 2:54Like taking it to TikTok as a business feels very
- 2:58unprofessional. And I think we see a lot of
- 3:01consumers take to TikTok to call out brands or businesses or
- 3:05corporations when they don't treat them well.
- 3:07And I see that as completely different to a brand taking to
- 3:11TikTok to call out an influencer.
- 3:14I think especially in this situation, she did say contracts
- 3:16were involved. So that leads me to believe that
- 3:20it's possible that this collab has to still come out or, you
- 3:23know, maybe the contract wasn't ironclad enough to kind of
- 3:26protect them, which is, of course another possibility.
- 3:29But this whole whole situation really reminds me of the Marlena
- 3:32Stelle, Jacqueline Hill situation.
- 3:34So Jacqueline was supposed to do a collab with Makeup Geek years
- 3:37ago, and it just never came to fruition.
- 3:40And then years later, Marlena Stelle like basically explained
- 3:43what happened in a video. Jacqueline was a friend and they
- 3:46started production on the makeup, like the palette that
- 3:50they were going to launch together prior to Jacqueline
- 3:52signing the contract. And Jacqueline just kept pushing
- 3:55the contract off and then eventually she had, you know,
- 3:58presumably a better opportunity with Morphe and told Marlena,
- 4:02like, I'm not going forward with this.
- 4:03I'm moving in a different direction.
- 4:04And I think that's probably something similar to what
- 4:08happened here if this whole story is true.
- 4:11But I think that's just business.
- 4:13Like I can tell you guys from the perspective of a business
- 4:16owner, how many times over the last four years we have been
- 4:22like this close to signing huge deals with huge brands and they
- 4:27end up saying last minute, oh we've changed the campaign
- 4:29direction or we've pulled the budget for this and we're
- 4:32allocating it somewhere else like that happens.
- 4:34And so I think influencers, we need to remember that they are
- 4:38businesses as well. It doesn't make it ethical.
- 4:40No, of course. And when you're on the receiving
- 4:42end of that, it's like horrible. You know, there's been one major
- 4:45deal that was a six figure deal that we almost got over the line
- 4:48in our second year and we were literally making plans with what
- 4:51we would do with that money. Thank God we didn't action any
- 4:53of those because it actually just didn't go through.
- 4:56So it's very heartbreaking when that happens.
- 4:59So I imagine from a business owner perspective this whole
- 5:02situation would have been really upsetting.
- 5:04But I think at the end of the day like taking to TikTok as a
- 5:08brand like this, basically it's almost like calling out another
- 5:11business, calling out another brand cause at the end of the
- 5:13day an influencer is another brand like you can't, you can't
- 5:16do that. It's just it's I don't know this
- 5:18whole situation is just really icky and you know everybody
- 5:22calling out the different influencers that they think and
- 5:24tagging them like this is just ended up being this big pile on
- 5:27situation. And now today I saw that the
- 5:30brand every jewel it's got verified on TikTok and you know
- 5:34the founder was celebrating and they made a post about it.
- 5:37So take that how you will, but it's just not sitting right with
- 5:43me or a lot of people. A lot of people are feeling like
- 5:45this whole situation has just been handled really poorly.
- 5:49All right? And the next story that I have
- 5:52for you guys today is that Tiktok is getting ready to
- 5:56launch an Instagram rival app. So over the past few days, some
- 6:01Tiktok users have been getting pop up notifications saying that
- 6:05the company is launching, quote, a new app for photo posts.
- 6:09The app will be called Tiktok Notes and any photos already
- 6:12posted to Tiktok by a user will automatically be shared to
- 6:16Tiktok Notes. You can actually turn this
- 6:18feature off, but if you don't then your photos that you've
- 6:20posted on TikTok will go to TikTok Notes.
- 6:23It's kind of reminding me of what Meta did with threads,
- 6:25where it was like it just transferred all of your
- 6:27followers over and your bio and your verification and all of
- 6:31that. So in relation to this, a TikTok
- 6:33spokesperson told Tech Crunch Quote As part of our continued
- 6:37commitment to innovating the TikTok experience, we're
- 6:39exploring ways to empower our community to create and share
- 6:43their creativity with photos and text in a dedicated space for
- 6:46those formats. I think this is going to be
- 6:49really interesting because young people already think that
- 6:52posting on Instagram is cringe, and I'm interested to see if
- 6:58this app takes off with Gen. Z, Gen.
- 7:01Alpha because it doesn't have that cringe association that
- 7:05Instagram does for them. Like, even though it's kind of,
- 7:08I assume, going to be a very similar platform, it has a more
- 7:11authentic association because it's associated with TikTok.
- 7:14So I think it's a possibility that this could become genuinely
- 7:18A rival brand. Although we saw Bytedance try
- 7:21and launch a rival to Pinterest a few years ago and that just
- 7:25went nowhere. It's called Lemonade and
- 7:27everybody was writing about it and talking about it at 1st, and
- 7:30I actually wrote a story about how it was going to go nowhere.
- 7:32And where is Lemonade now? Nowhere.
- 7:36Anyways guys, that's all the news that I have for you today
- 7:40in an episode that was short and sweet, but the last two were
- 7:42kind of bigger and giving you guys content updates and all of
- 7:46that. But thank you guys so much for
- 7:48listening to Mini Scroll. Please remember to rate, review
- 7:51and subscribe. It means so much to me.
- 7:54I love you guys so much and I will talk to you tomorrow.
- 7:57Bye.
