Latest / Great Detectives of Old Time Radio Volume 2|Mystery Audio Dramas / Line Up: Eddie Gaynor Framed for Murder (EP0836)
Transcript
- 0:28Welcome to the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio from Boise, Idaho. This
- 0:34is your host, Adam Grant. This show will also be running the feet
- 0:39of the old time Dragnet program, so to give people a sneak peek at
- 0:44the new program, we're doing the Lineup. This is our first Saturday program
- 0:49and I think you will enjoy it as we're going to dedicate this day to
- 0:54the police procedurals and we'll work through quite a few shows that are police procedural
- 1:00and detective programs. The first of these will do is the Lineup. After
- 1:07the success of Dragnet, there were many shows that sought to capture that audience.
- 1:15Just as when the hard boiled detective genre became a going concern in nineteen
- 1:23forty five and forty six, there were countless programs that popped up. In
- 1:26my opinion, the two best of these programs for NBC's Tales of the Texas
- 1:34Rangers and CBS Says Presentation the Lineup. Unlike Dragnet, the lineup was not
- 1:42blazed on actual police cases. However, it could have been. Unlike another
- 1:48CBS program running at the same time, Broadway as my Beat, Lineup managed
- 1:53to take a more realistic tone and be more tied in with the life of
- 1:57the actual police and as he worked to solve the case. The series had
- 2:02a very strong cast, led by the great William Johnstone. Johnstone was best
- 2:08known as the voice of the Shadow. However, as anyone who's listened to
- 2:14The Great Detectors of Old Time Radio for any length of time knows, he
- 2:19had a great career as a character actor on multiple programs. The program will
- 2:25also features several other actors appearing on a semi regular basis in a wide variety
- 2:35of roles, including Tony Barrett, Jeanette Nolan, Virginia Gregg, and William
- 2:44Conrad. The first sidekick for William Johnstone's character, Ben Guthrie, will be
- 2:52familiar to many listeners of The Great Detectors of Old Time Radio. It's Wally
- 2:55Mayor, who played Lieutenant Tenant Riley over on Let George Do It. At
- 3:00the center of each program is a lineup. The actual lineup may Or may
- 3:06not provide a clue to the case being investigated, however, it sets the
- 3:12tone for a realistic, down to earth investigation. The series began as a
- 3:17summer replacement show in the summer of nineteen fifty four the FBI and Peace in
- 3:23War, and it ran in that slot for eight weeks. The case we
- 3:30have is the earliest in existence, and it is the third episode, and
- 3:38it was the first two were three young girls murdered and the abeyant abnegated Alibi,
- 3:49and those were from July sixth July thirteenth of nineteen fifty. Today's episode
- 3:54is from July twentieth, nineteen fifty. So sit back and enjoy the lineup.
- 4:03The FBI in Peace and War, usually heard at this time throughout the
- 4:06year, is taking its summer vacation. The FBI in Peace and War returned
- 4:11to CBS six weeks from now August thirty. First, ladies and gentlemen,
- 4:17we take you now behind the scenes of a police headquarters in a great American
- 4:21city, or under the cold glaring lights will pass before us, the innocent,
- 4:27the vagrant, things, the murderer. We take you now to the
- 4:31lineup. Are you so right? Don't worry about a thing, mister Harness.
- 4:59I just don't want to anything to happen to me. I haven't got
- 5:00a family identifind a man you saw holding the gun, we don't see the
- 5:04nothing happens gangs. I should never have taken that job as janitor there in
- 5:12the first place, A suite of offices and miss for gusters. You should
- 5:16have thought about that. Your attention please you people out there on the other
- 5:20side of the why I had your attention to you? Thank you. My
- 5:25name is grab Sergeant Matt Greb. I'll explain the lineup for you. Each
- 5:29of the suspects you will see will be numbered. I'll call off a number,
- 5:31their name and charge. If you have any questions or identifications, please
- 5:35remember the number of sides of the prisoner as I call his name at the
- 5:39end of the line. When I call for questions or identifications, call up
- 5:43the number. If you're sure. I'm not too sure of a suspect,
- 5:46have him held. I don't like these lutes, and I'm worried we all
- 5:49name will assist do they're seated among you. Please be prompt with your questions
- 5:54or identifications. When the prisoners leave here, they are sent to the bathroom
- 5:58and dressed back into their jail clothes. It makes it quite difficult to bring
- 6:01them back here after they leave. The questions I asked these suspects, and
- 6:05really they get a natural tone of voice, so do not take too much
- 6:08attention to their answers, as they often lie. Bring on the line this
- 6:13way, boys, right down the stage. You're the front man walked at
- 6:16the end of a ticket place. The rest follow around the face front and
- 6:23by your sides. Look straight ahead so the people at defer see you.
- 6:27Number one done, dust and vaquancy. What do you'll have done? I
- 6:30was on sixteen nine Street. I know that's for what number? Being on

- 8:18say so. I already feel like I was born here live. When did
- 8:20you get in there? If you go, it's a frame anybody should never
- 8:26come from where longreach? It's in Illinois, Chicago at Thompson Scraps. Why

- 8:46Oh? That still beat up? In a week? Prices right?
- 8:52No kill? There are other ways to make a living. Johnny Durando was
- 8:56a big man in our town. Price for killing must have been high.
- 9:01Who paid you to kill him? In nobody because I didn't kill Johnny Joanna.
- 9:05Why should I kill him and need him for one? What I said

- 9:39Tell me. Walking down the hall at Johnny's office, I hear shots.
- 9:45Quick I run in. Johnny slumped over his desk, he said, with
- 9:48his head on his Pimmy Bank reached for my gun. I don't have it.
- 9:52Oh, I don't have it because my gun got there ahead of me.

- 11:07sings me a lullaby, well asleep, right to took. She wakes me,
- 11:11pushes me out the door. I shouldn't be late for my appointment,
- 11:16and I don't even have time to notice my gun is gone. I figured

- 15:22disappoint my client. Johnny Tranto might have been disappointed. Johnny might have been
- 15:28open many ways. He was a sense man, you know, Ben,
- 15:33I've been so engrossed in this sail. I didn't even think of it in
- 15:35that way. Oh forgive me, Johnny, that's all. Johnny's definitely his
- 15:41companion. There's number one errand boy, and we're at the funeral or being
- 15:45number one morning? Oh well, I got pride to my emotions being where
- 15:50were you last night? UBI run two o'clock saying, who wouldn't my wife

- 16:06king in this town. Couldn't it will be? Oh good? But I
- 16:07gave up all that years of girls. Everyone knew, even Johnny. You

- 19:18two in the mornings, long enough to work. I need the bed too.
- 19:22What's worrying? You've been a gang killing. You've been through it before.
- 19:26Sometimes we come up with a killers, sometimes no, so so you
- 19:30sleep on it. As simple as that, ain't simpler. Young hooligan comes
- 19:34to town, knocks over Johnny Toronto. What's company? I know? So
- 19:37you sleep on it. Man, you're still trying to aliby Eddie Gainer.
- 19:44He said he was framed. A young hood is gone at the scene of
- 19:47the crime. Don't get philosophical about a punk like that. Why was Jinny
- 19:51Breen killed? Man? I hang her on she rubbed noses with hooligan's.
- 19:55She could have come to me five years ago and I would have told her
- 19:56what happened. Maybe I couldn't have said what Ali, but they're would have
- 20:00been an alliance. We've got to find out who killed him, man,
- 20:02we will, and who killed Johnny? Eddie gainor I don't know. I
- 20:07really don't know. How can you not know? Delanto runs everything in this
- 20:11town that's got a fast dollar, stronger one. He buys lots with these
- 20:14fast dollars, most anything he wants. Let's not kid ourselves. Shelanto owns
- 20:18his part of this town. Someone wants it high as Eddie Gainer to kill
- 20:22him. Let's not kid each other. Ben, I'll drop you off.
- 20:25Man, that's late, as my boy. What's on your mind? Tobin?
- 20:30What's on my mind? He says, what's on a lawyer's mind at
- 20:33a time like this? Playf this a boy like you? Stop changing those
- 20:38coins, Tobin? All right, what's on your mind? Read it?
- 20:41Read it? And Papa tear abas coppers boys relief. Eddie gainor Ri says,
- 20:48I'll wait for him a better Well, what stupid, I'll go on
- 20:56with your education, Ben, Eddie Gainer's jets from people with kid Don't say
- 21:02it, don't say it. Come on, I'll take you home, right
- 21:23all right? Yeah, I just got dead in this cover because it's too
- 21:30good to keep to myself. Who is this? You slipped the night flu
- 21:33cover? Your pillow was a deadly mistake? Deadly What are you talking about
- 21:40at seven o'clock in the morning of a new day. You don't know what
- 21:42I'm talking about? Eddie Gainer, that's what what about it? He should
- 21:49never released the cover because release and Eddie made him sick, so sick he
- 21:56die. Who is this? Try to use car out on well Worries.
- 22:02That's where you'll find Eddie because Eddie was used up. You know. I'm
- 22:21glad you came for him. That corps had me going there for a while.
- 22:26Yeah. Oh, I walked into my Lota. Oh I'm Murray,
- 22:30Murray used guards your name? Please? Thanks, mister Gussie. I take
- 22:34your name because it is unknown when you might be in the market. Re
- 22:38used car. I know your name. It's like you're dealing with an old
- 22:42friend. You'll find just the way you see him sitting there in the front
- 22:47seat, like he was real, like he was admiring the dashboard of this
- 22:51luxurious bargaining a used car. I helloed him, went into my sphere,
- 22:56couldn't tell he was then well, now I tell you, mister Gussie the
- 23:00suckers I get in here. It's hard to tell, but this one looks
- 23:03so sold. I thought he was alive and intelligent. Why I even handed
- 23:07him my ballpoint, Talton, this man's Eddie Gaynan. Why didn't you call
- 23:11the police? Well, finding a dead man all shot up in one of
- 23:15your better used car bargains, that makes a little mulling over friends, after
- 23:19I mold I was going to call you for sure. Honest, you say,
- 23:23this man's Eddie Gaynor. I've been reading about in the papers. Well
- 23:27what do you know? Well, what do you know about that kind of
- 23:44got this? What is it turning? That lawyer Tobin We still haven't been
- 23:48able to find him. Still can't understand why you should take off like he
- 23:52did lose himself. A client of his was found murdered in a used car
- 23:56lot. Maybe maybe Toben was a shame. Maybe he heard we want to
- 24:00question him criminal line like that. Maybe something will come up. And keep
- 24:04looking. I'm gotta make this sign up, and I want to just say
- 24:11to the answer league, I didn't know him or not, but you say
- 24:15to death did he want to see the fights of the city or of a
- 24:18have a good time? You know? Number twenty six Mooney Roger first snatching
- 24:22Where do you live? Morning? I believe that's the man's side. I
- 24:26believe, yes, yes, I'm sure of it. And that man in
- 24:32my office for interrogation woman too right, No, Kevin clients, good money
- 24:56will be here in a minute. Awful close, bad all right, I
- 25:00can't help it. Listen. I felt conspicuous all during that lineup the pass
- 25:06and getting to be a good policewoman. I did God, I need good
- 25:10yea a dead mooning good fine. I want to tell you, miss,
- 25:14when you're off duty, not being a policewoman, hold on your purse tighter
- 25:18as guys like me for real on the street cars. What have you got
- 25:21money? I'm a good story. Yes, the lady, the miss is
- 25:25she jing? Money is good. Yeah, it's cooling the way I arranged
- 25:30for the cops to pick me up, so the boys going on my troup
- 25:33profession so I can stay alive. So much shooting rightly? Yeah, what
- 25:38have you done. Ye're looking for a lawyer, Tobin. I got a
- 25:44friend friends the flash with the Bay Shore part. You got a little room
- 25:48one need the hotel there my tire, Lieutenant Lars Toben, didn't my friend
- 25:53a big favor? Arsony rap my tire that you're a good stuy money.
- 26:00Yeah, you're not a welcome sight to me. Boy. You won't mind
- 26:15my saying it. Flight your faces, Toben, that hurts seven. We
- 26:18always cooperated with you. You walk in jingling coins. You asked us to
- 26:22release a boy, and we release him just because you rest us. You
- 26:26have to be glad to see sure, Oben, we made it so easy
- 26:30for Eddie Gainer to get killed. We thought you want to thank us.
- 26:33That's why we looked you up. I had nothing to do with killing that
- 26:37boy, absolutely nothing. Fight for reverse reverse That means you're trying to save
- 26:41us, lad, that's what it means, Toban, Well insinent, it
- 26:48must mean something else, and then you're wasting your time. Boy. I
- 26:51studied the law real hard. That's why I know about things like this.
- 26:55Our policeman and waiting time. Where did it get your studying hard? You've
- 26:59got a man in a three car garage seven stupeed. You press your pants
- 27:02and you end up under a ferris wheel. Maybe it's this math. Maybe
- 27:06it's just that he likes to hide under a ferris wheel. Other people rhyme.
- 27:10He hides. It's just like you say, boy. But there's one
- 27:12thing we don't understand, Tobin. Why do you like to hide? You're
- 27:17all clear, like you say, what's the need? I forgot? Maybe
- 27:18you thought no one would notice how Eddie was killed. How you got him
- 27:23out on a list so he could be killed. I forged on. But
- 27:26at headquarters you'll remember Aethobin, They'll fix a crease in your pants and let's
- 27:30go, Yeah, come on, let's go. How can you stand the
- 27:33noise of that we are going around and around over your head? Thing like
- 27:37that could drive a man that's put the loose change in your pocket, tob
- 27:41and it will get in the way of it comes. You're making a big
- 27:44mistake for us, but we'll live ether like you'll make a mistake in your
- 27:47diet. That's the difference between us. It's one of the things we don't
- 27:51understand, Toban. Eddie Gainer was almost sure to be executed. Why did
- 27:56the Syndic could have him released. Wouldn't have been cheaper to let the stake
- 28:00leavy for him? The cups two tight children. I'll make a deal with
- 28:04you boys. You'll know better. No deal. I'll offer it anyway.
- 28:08You can consider it no loss, as you can't consider it. So instead
- 28:12of man like me makes some mistakes, he gets killed. You was all
- 28:15right, You don't know Little's children. All I want for what I give
- 28:19you is protection. You've got a promise you'll do your best to keep me
- 28:22from getting murdered whatever you get to give. I was Johnny Toronto's friend.
- 28:26I tried to make something up to him. I didn't want him dead.
- 28:30Who didn't it's the promac allright, kind heart, I'll tell you anyway.
- 28:36Eddie Gainor was playing because someone wanted Johnny dead. Johnny was killed. Eddie
- 28:41was a perfect pigeon. It was my own idea to get Eddie released.
- 28:45I thought Johnny would like that for me to use. Is someone's pigeon to
- 28:48avenge Johnny's death. Miss someone killed Johnnyman who will be live? And the
- 28:55girl It'll be live and Eddie will be light. You killed me too.
- 29:00It's to find me prove it to Atoby. Oh, we'll get you to
- 29:06the phone. You'll call Ruby telling me doesn't have to look for you anymore.
- 29:10You'll be a Toronto's office in an hour. You don't believe it,
- 29:12huh perfectly. If we have to, you'll have to be sure you'll be

- 33:36Well it's not quite dragnant, but definitely had a more realistic tone,
- 33:43and I do love the lineup scenes. Really, it's a great highlight and
- 33:49brahaps some of the best source of humor both intentional and brahaps unintentional in the
- 33:54series. I should mention that we owe a great debt of grand attitude in
- 34:00terms of being able to decipher the order of this series. To the side
- 34:06Digital DELAFTP dot com, they're longed of the lineup really has allowed me to
- 34:12get this an order. This has probably been one of the series that has
- 34:15been most neglected in terms of being given proper ordering, and you've had so
- 34:22many mislabeled shows out there. They did an outstanding job over there making a
- 34:29good and readable log to clarify their own locks. They went over to the
- 34:34Thousand Oaks Library and took a look at actual script pages, and even after
- 34:39that, there's still some episodes that are marked title unknown. Well, we'll
- 34:45have more details on the series. I've kind of gone to a point where
- 34:49I try and do a rolling introduction to the series rather than jamming ten minutes
- 34:53into the first program, So we'll have more on the cast and writers of
- 35:00the lineup in the next episode. If you are listening to this on the
- 35:06old time Dragnet series and you'd just like to follow the procedural programs, just
- 35:12top into your computer. If you're using iTunes, go to Procedural dot Great
- 35:16Detectives dot net. That's and then if you are using something other than iTunes,
- 35:27just type in Procedural two dot Great Detectors dot net and that will allow
- 35:31you to just subscribe to the police procedural programs if you don't want to hear
- 35:37the other shows. But for the rest of our listeners, we will actually
- 35:40be back on Monday with another adventure of Frank Race, and then on Saturday
- 35:47join us back here for the lineup. In the meanwhile, send your comments
- 35:52to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net, follow us on Twitter Radio Detectors,
