- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Thank you for joining me today.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: I am your host Karen and I really appreciate you hitting the play button to listen to today's episode.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Now, today I'm going to be talking about the one thing that I get asked a lot, and that is how much does it actually cost to create an online course?
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Because it's important to know up front what the costs are so that you can plan for this if this is something that you are ultimately looking to do in the future.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Now, the one thing that I will say about any cost associated with creating an online course is that it's really important to frame this as an investment.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Anything you pay towards creating your course is going to be an investment in the future success of your business.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Now, the reason why I wanted to point this out is because I think sometimes when we we realise that costs are associated, it can be off-putting because then we suddenly go to that place of, oh, I don't know if I can afford to do this, I don't know if I've got the money, I don't know if it's going to be worth it, I don't know if I'm gonna make my money back.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: And so when we're looking at doing something for the very first time, obviously there are going to be lots of questions that you're gonna have swishing around in your head, but especially when there are costs involved, it can be very off-putting.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Now I think when it comes to running our businesses or growing our businesses, we do need to invest money up front in order for us to achieve our goals.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Now, this could be in the way of bringing some help on board, it could be investing in tech, it could even be spending out on tools and things that are going to streamline processes so that we can get things done.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Money is simply the tool that we use to make these things happen, and so I think when it when we're looking at creating something, we need to be okay with the fact that we need to invest money because that's ultimately what's going to help us to make these things happen.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Having said that, there are not huge costs associated with creating online courses.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: There's not, it it's not going to break the bank in terms of financial investment, but of course, you are creating a brand new revenue stream in your business, and like anything worth having in life, a little bit of financial investment is needed to help you achieve it and to make your life easier because you know there are things that are out there that can help you to get this stuff done without you having to spend so much time having to do it do it yourself.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: So we want to equally make this process as easy and simple as possible so that you can start making money because that's what you're investing in, you're investing in your future revenue.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: So the money that you are going to invest, you are going to be making back, and so it's really important that you keep that in mind.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: So I'm just gonna run through the key things that you will most likely need to spend money on.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Um, and of course, this it doesn't necessarily mean you have to.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I work with many clients, and not everybody does what I'm gonna share with you.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: There are always other ways of approaching this, but what I'm gonna share with you is going to give you an insight into the the things that may be needed for you to get your course done.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Okay, so the first thing I want to talk about, and this is a biggie because this is going to actually make sure that your course is accessible by your students, and this is the course hosting platform.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: Now, again, a question I get asked a lot is how do I get my course out into the world where people can actually access it?
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: And this is done through course hosting platforms.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: So they're also known as learning management systems, they are online platforms where you build your course and then you set it up so students can then access it.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: So a lot of these platforms do have things like checkouts, uh checkout pages, and whatnot, but but essentially it's where you're going to host all of your content so that you can then put it in front of your student.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Now, the reason why I want to talk about this course first is because it is a biggie.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: It's it's you giving access to your course and making your content accessible is necessary in order for you to um to do this.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: You need students, you you obviously you want to make money, so your content needs to be made available.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: So when it comes to course hosting platforms, because there are so many products out on the market, you need to choose a platform that is ultimately right for your goals and for what you ideally want to achieve for yourself.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: And and the reason why I say that is because these platforms range in cost, so you could be paying from as little as£30 a month to as much as£125 a month, so there is a real difference in what these may cost, and the way that you choose your platform is by identifying your core goals.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Now you can host your course through your website.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: So if you have a WordPress website, there are plugins that you can invest in to help you create your course and to get your course accessible via your website.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: You just need to be aware that in order to achieve this, you even need to understand the WordPress platform and be okay with setting up plugins and additional functionality that your course may need, or there would be an investment into a developer.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: So the there's two costs there.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: You are most likely with a plugin going to have a monthly subscription, so there will be an ongoing cost on a monthly basis, and then it will be the cost for your developer.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: So this may be a one-off cost, it may be the fact that your developer would put you on a payment plan, and then you would again have a monthly cost there.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: But either way, this option is only really viable if you have a WordPress platform and you are happy to invest in those costs.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Now, outside of that, there are third-party platforms that you can use in order to achieve this as well.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: It's you just need to decide the direction in which you want to go, whether you want to set up your course through your website or whether you want to use a third-party platform.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: As I said, I use a platform called Kinjabi.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: It's been around for a long time and it's really it's a reliable platform built solely for course creators.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: And over the years, it's added more and more features to respond to the ever-growing demands of course creators.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: So you can create your one-to-one programme on the platform, you can create a membership site, an online course, or you can even build a community.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: So it's a very extensive tool that helps to create that digital business.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: Now, what I really like about this platform is that it is all in one, which means I can use this platform to run my entire online business.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: I can keep track of my sales, I can build sales pages, I can grow my email list without having to rely on additional third-party platforms.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: And it makes running an online business so much easier because everything's in one place.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: But as I said, for this platform, there is a cost associated with it.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: So it's what your goals are.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Now, for me, when I was looking at choosing my my course hosting platform, I my aspirations determined the platform that I chose.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: So when I chose Punjabi, it was because my intentions were to create a digital business, and I wanted a platform that was going to grow with me.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: So as I built out my offering, it would give me everything that I needed to have to do what I needed to do.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: So for me, Punjabi was an absolute no-brainer, and I figured, you know what, it's£125.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: I just need to make sure that I sell X amount a month and I've made my money back.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: And then after that, I'm in profit.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: So I guess my way of thinking about it was very much this is what I need because this is what I'm creating, so this is what I'm going to invest in.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: Now, on the other side of that, and I work with many clients that do not want to invest in a platform like Punjabi because at the moment that cost is just not viable.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: So there are other platforms that you can invest in to help you achieve your goals.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: Now, every platform has its own little nuance.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: So, for example, Podia is a very simple platform, it's really easy to use, it is a little bit more basic, um, and it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that Kinjabi has, but it's still a really good platform.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: I have built courses in Podia for clients, and it works really well if you are only intending to create one or two courses and you're not bothered about all the bells and whistles because that's not what you're looking to build out.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: So, for that, Podia is perfectly adequate, as is teachable and think if you just need to make sure that when you're choosing your course hosting platform, you do your research and you do your due diligence on what you're going to need in the future, not now, but in the future as you're building out your online course.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: So, here I would really recommend that what how you approach this is that you first determine what your goals are, and then you choose a platform that aligns best with what you are looking to achieve.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Now, just something to take on board when you are deciding your platform.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: The platform you choose will not determine the sales that you achieve, and I think that's a really important thing to point out because again, that's something that I get asked about a lot.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: If I invest in Punjabi, is that going to increase my sales?
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Now, what you need to take on board is the fact that the platform alone is not what the students are buying, the students that you're selling to are going to be buying the results, and so this is where the planning stage of your course and how you pull together your content and the transformation that you deliver is on point because that's what your students are buying.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Your course is purely how you're going to deliver that.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: So, whilst your students will not be buying your course because of your platform, your platform does determine the experience that they they receive.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: So, for example, if you want to deliver a really exceptional experience to your students and you want to sell additional products off the back of your course, then really you do want to be investing in a platform that allows you to set up your course exactly how you want to have it, and not all platforms allow for that.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: So you just need to do your research and make sure that the platform that you're going to invest in is going to give you what you need.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: One of the reasons I chose Kinjabi was because I can create exactly the experience that I want to create through the platform, I can design it, I can brand it, I can determine how I'm going to deliver my content.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: It gives me a lot of features that I can use to set up my courses so that my students walk away having had a really great experience so that I can use my course as a funnel to the next step.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: So your course platform will not necessarily be what determines your sales, but it might be what helps to keep students on board, what engages them to your content, and what helps to funnel them through to the next step in your offer pipeline.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: What I recommend is that you take the time to look for the right platform that is right for you.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: What might be right for me might not be right for you, so you need to take that time and actually do your research.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: But if by doing this, I promise you it will save you a lot of work down the road because you don't want to be switching platforms later on.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: You want to be able to be with a platform that grows with you and gives you what you need at the time you need it.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's now talk about equipment because again, this is another thing I get asked a lot about.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: What equipment do I need to invest in to create my course?
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: Um, and you do need equipment because, of course, you are creating something, so it in order to be able to deliver your content and your teachings, you do, of course, need equipment.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: The the equipment that you're going to need is going to be a device of some kind.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: So whether you've got a computer, you've got a laptop, or you've got an iPad, you'll need a really good high-quality microphone, you'll need a light, and you'll need a green screen.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: So the first piece of equipment that I just want to talk about is your microphone.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Because if you are creating content, then you want to be making sure that your audio is of high quality, it delivers high quality sound.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: You don't want to have a muffled effect, you don't want to have it all crackling and sounding all pitchy and off-putting because it will it will it will just mean that your students will not continue with your course, they'll just switch off.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: Because if the if your audio is not of high quality, then your students will uh struggle to engage with it.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: So you want to make sure that your audio is clear and well adjusted, it needs to be comfortable to listen to and you need to have consistency in tone and in the audio levels, and a really good microphone is going to help you with that.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: Now, like with most things, you can go cheap or you can go expensive.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: There is no right or wrong here, you've just got to find the piece of equipment that works for you.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: If budget is an issue and you're just starting out, then I recommend you just start with a lapel microphone that you can plug in to your device.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: These start from like£10.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: I think I think on Amazon it's like£9.99, or you might even be able to pick it up cheaper.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: They are really cost effective, they just simply click on clip onto a piece of clothing, and it helps to amplify your voice as you're recording.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: They're really easy to use, um, and you can you can literally order today, get it tomorrow, and then start using it.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: Now, if you're looking for something a little bit more quality, then it may be worth investing in a really good microphone, like a blue Yeti.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: I use a blue Yeti, I love it, it's great, it's really easy to use, and I find that the audio quality that I receive is of a higher level.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: So I I when I started out, I used the lapel mic, now I use a blue yeti, and I prefer a blue yeti, but I do a lot of audio recording.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: If you're starting your course and you're just starting out on this journey, you do not need to be spending on a blue Yeti.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: A lapel microphone is sufficient, okay.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: A blue Yeti, I think, is on the market for about£119.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: So you don't need to be spending that if you're starting out, work towards it as you build your online courses or you develop a podcast or you create um video recording, you don't need to invest in that at this moment.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: Start with a£10 lapel mic and it will do the job for you.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: So another tool that you need to really think about when you're recording is if you're doing video where you're appearing on screen, then you need to invest in a ring light.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: If you don't have a ring light, then just sit in front of a window and make sure the light is on your face.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: But outside of that, invest in a ring light.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: Now these are really cheap as well.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: I think you can pick up a ring light for again about£10 on Amazon.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: I think you might be able to pick it up even cheaper.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: But what that does, it illuminates you on screen.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: So rather than sitting in a very dark environment where people can't see you, or maybe as you move, the shadows appear across your face.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: A ring light will help to illuminate you so you stand out.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: So it's a piece of equipment that's really worth having.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: Again, as your students are moving through the course and listening to your video recording and watching you, if you are on screen, you want to make it engaging, you do not want to make it distracting in any way.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: So it's worth investing in a ring light, and then of course, we've got green screens as well.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: But if you are in an environment that is very busy, it's cluttered, and you don't have clear space, then invest in a green screen because this will enable you to choose a backdrop that enhances your video content.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: Again, these aren't very expensive.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: I think you can pick it up, or I think you could pick one up on Abidzone for for I think it's like 30 quid.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: Um, it's not a lot of money, but what it does do, it will help to enhance your recordings because again, it's giving you the backdrop that's going to help you to stand out.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: If you record in a cluttered environment, then it's just going to be distractive.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: So green screens help you to create more of a new backdrop to your video.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's move on to tools because there are going to be a few tools that will also help you to create your course.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: Now I use Trello to plan out all of my digital products, including my online courses, and it's great because I get to see a bird's eye view of exactly what it is I'm creating, which means I can see whether or not my content flows, and I can add files to the boards, and I can create individual cards relating to each piece of content that pulls everything together.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: I love this tool, it's really simple to use, and of course, best of all, it's free, so there's no cost associated with using this tool.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: So if you haven't used Trello before, then I highly recommend that you check it out.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Just go and visit Trello.com and have a play with it.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: It's one of those tools that you don't know that you need until you start using it, and Trello has become a real firm favorite in my suite of tools that I use.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: Another tool I use is Canva.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: Now I love Canva, I am a graphic designer, I love design.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: I use the Adobe Suite, so I use InDesign and Fred Shop and all of those tools.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: But Canva has again become a firm favorite of mine because it makes it really easy to create beautiful graphics at the touch of your fingertips.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, Canva has everything that you need to do what you need to do, they have A library of templates they make it so easy for non-designers to design really cool stuff to help save you time.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Now, when it comes to creating your online course, you're going to need visuals, whether it's in form of resources, product images, thumbnails, sales page graphics, um, all kinds of things, and you can set these up really easily in Canva.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: And also, what I like about Canva is that you can set up your brand kit, which means that you can set it all up, have your fonts, your colours, your images, and then you can use them over and over and over again so all of your stuff is branded and consistent looking, so you can keep your brand style throughout everything that you create, which is really important when you're creating your products.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: Now, in terms of price, there is a free version which you can access to use this tool.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: However, this is one tool that I would highly recommend that you are grade into.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: If you know you're going to be creating online courses, or you know that you're going to be developing lead magnets and free resources, or you're going to even be developing online content, social media posts, and things like that, then invest in the pro um version.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: It's only, I think,$9.99, and it's going to make your life so much easier.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: It's gonna because it's gonna help, like I say, keep everything consistent, and it means that you can just set up templates so that you don't have to keep creating stuff over and over and over again.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: You can create reels, you can create videos, you can do animation, you can record slides.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: They have a recording studio, so you can even go in and create audio over your slide deck for your online course.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: So I do think this is one tool that is worth investing in when you're creating your online course.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: So, again, another tool that I mentioned earlier is Zoom.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: You may be familiar with Zoom if you host meetings in your business or you network or you record content already.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: Zoom is again really easy to use.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: You can use the free version so you don't have to upgrade, and it's just a really great tool to use for video recording, so you can record yourself delivering your content.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: The other great thing about Zoom is that you can record your screen.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: So if you are giving a demonstration on how to do something, then you can screen share and record your screen as you're demonstrating what you're what you're teaching your students.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: The final tool that I'm gonna share with you is a tool called Filmora.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: Now, this is what I use to edit my videos.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: I have used many tools in the past to edit videos, and Filmora is the one that I've kind of stuck with because I found it to be really user-friendly, really easy to use, and it does some really cool stuff in in very quick time.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: So, again, you don't have to spend hours and hours and hours learning high-tech tools in order to achieve something that's actually really quite simple.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: Now, as I said, I have tried and tested many tools, and and this is by far the best tool that I've come across.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: And what I love about this tool is that again, you know, even for people that are non-techy, it's really easy to use.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: You can create lots of cool stuff very quickly, and because it's web-based, it doesn't matter if you're on a PC or if you're on a Mac.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: I I've used iMovie in the past because I am a Mac user.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: Um, iMovie is great, but it has its limitations.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: So, what I found was Filmora is the next level, it's a very powerful tool, and you can do exactly what you can do in iMovie, but there's more capability.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: Now, I also think this is very reasonably priced because you can pay for the year and it is literally only£45.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: It's definitely worth it.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: If you're thinking about how am I gonna edit my videos, how am I going to make everything all polished and perfect for my course, then I highly recommend that you check out Filmora.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: So the final cost that I just want to talk about is support.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: Now, you do not necessarily need to invest in support if you are confident that you can do this on your own, and you can do this on your own, you don't necessarily need other people on board to help you.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: However, this is going to be different for everybody because everyone's skill level is different.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: Now, some of my clients are happy to create their online courses and to you know get involved in the tech, whereas some of my clients just simply want to hand it all over, they want to do the initial planning and the content creation, and they want to outsource it in order for it to be built so they don't because they don't just don't want to get involved in that side of things.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: Now, because of this, the cost here can vary quite wide widely.
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: You could bring a VA on board and get them to support you with the creation of your content, the build of your course, and the design of all your material, or as I said, you can do this yourself.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: It's really going to depend on the time you have available, the inclination you have to do this, your skill level, and of course your budget.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: However, what I will say is that you do not need to be skilled to create your online course, even if you have never recorded anything before, or you've even edited a video, you can still do this.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: It's just going to depend on how much inclination that you have to learn.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: Now, just in terms of cost, if you're looking at a VA, this is of course going to vary because VAs all charge different prices.
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: But again, look at this as an investment because if you bring somebody on board to support you, and I do encourage people to invest in support because we can't do everything ourselves, we're busy, we have limited time, limited capacity, and we do need to bring support on board, then this cost can, of course, vary.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: So, whilst I can't give you a baseline figure on this, what I do recommend is that you check out bringing a VA on board to support you.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: So, as you can see, whilst there is a financial investment needed in order to create your online course, the costs aren't huge.
