Latest / I Hate Talking / The Bigger They Are: Toy Story 3, Toy Sentience, and the Word “The”
Transcript
- 0:30I Hate Talking: Welcome to episode 116 of I Hate Talking.
- 0:33I Hate Talking: Hi everyone.
- 0:34I Hate Talking: So I suppose we will continue on Toy Story 3.
- 0:40I Hate Talking: Yay, so we watched it.
- 0:42I Hate Talking: All right, so word first, right?
- 0:44I Hate Talking: Word first.
- 0:45I Hate Talking: Perhaps we'll just skim the surface on this one and I'll just go by memory, or maybe we'll look up some of the stuff, but The word of the episode is the, the TH.
- 0:57I Hate Talking: That's correct, THE.
- 0:59I Hate Talking: OK.
- 1:00I Hate Talking: So there's an interesting thing that can happen in the English language, and again this is all going off memory, so I'll have to either fact check myself or you are a listener can fact check me, but there are sometimes instances in English phraseology where the is not an article.
- 1:21I Hate Talking: OK, elaborate.
- 1:24I Hate Talking: So, typically the or the word a or an will refer to a noun within.
- 1:32I Hate Talking: A sentence.
- 1:34I Hate Talking: So, like the podcast is amazing.
- 1:37I Hate Talking: That refers to the podcast and amazing describes what it is.
- 1:44I Hate Talking: But there are other instances in the English language where there's typically more of a phrase, and an example that comes to mind is like, The bigger they are, the harder they will fall.
- 2:00I Hate Talking: OK.
- 2:01I Hate Talking: So the does not refer to -- it's -- not an article, -- it's -- not referring to a noun.
- 2:07I Hate Talking: It's still an article.
- 2:10I Hate Talking: Well, now I'm pulling it back decades old English hair.
- 2:17I Hate Talking: OK.
- 2:17I Hate Talking: The bigger they are, yep.
- 2:21I Hate Talking: The is the harder they will fall.
- 2:26I Hate Talking: I know, but that phrase, the bigger.
- 2:29I Hate Talking: The bigger, yep.
- 2:31I Hate Talking: The is the subject, I guess, right?
- 2:34I Hate Talking: No, it's the.
- 2:35I Hate Talking: The bigger they are.
- 2:38I Hate Talking: The bigger they, oh, I guess that, yeah, right, the bigger the, cause you don't say the bigger they are.
- 2:44I Hate Talking: The bigger they are.
- 2:46I Hate Talking: That's the subject, they, OK, which is a pronoun article, the Keep going.
- 2:54I Hate Talking: I'm lost.
- 2:56I Hate Talking: I don't want to lose other people, so keep going.
- 2:58I Hate Talking: So, it's actually a conditional statement.
- 3:05I Hate Talking: So it doesn't make it an article.
- 3:08I Hate Talking: It's not an article.
- 3:09I Hate Talking: If it's conditional, it's not an article.
- 3:12I Hate Talking: So perhaps, again, going off memory, the etymology is important here, is that in the Old English, maybe.
- 3:22I Hate Talking: Indo-European languages that there is a word called pa.
- 3:30I Hate Talking: Which is a comparative word.
- 3:34I Hate Talking: Sort of like a modern day if then or if when statement in English.
- 3:40I Hate Talking: So Basically, if you said that in literal.
- 3:46I Hate Talking: Old English or whatever these.
- 3:49I Hate Talking: European roots are, it would be uh bigger they are.
- 3:54I Hate Talking: Uh, harder they fall.
- 3:57I Hate Talking: OK, where you are comparing or contrasting or in some way having a conditional sentence.
- 4:07I Hate Talking: If they're bigger, then they fall.
- 4:09I Hate Talking: Yes, that's it if If they are bigger, Then they will fall harder if then, or if they are bigger, when they fall, they will fall harder, right, which makes sense, right?
- 4:23I Hate Talking: If you're bigger.
- 4:24I Hate Talking: So you jump in the water, the bigger you are, essentially, typically, the bigger splash you're gonna make, the harder the fall, the bigger the splash.
- 4:34I Hate Talking: Will be right, even in that scenario, the does not refer to an article of the noun.
- 4:40I Hate Talking: The bigger The splash Yes, sir.
- 4:46I Hate Talking: OK.
- 4:46I Hate Talking: So the reason that this came about as phraseology in English is because pa and the.
- 4:53I Hate Talking: Basically sound the same.
- 4:55I Hate Talking: So they became used interchangeably and the one out.
- 5:01I Hate Talking: So basically, when you're having these comparative statements or some sort of if then or if when statement that the does not refer to a particular subject, but is actually comparing two different pieces of that particular phrase.
- 5:19I Hate Talking: Yeah, I get, I mean, I buy that, and it even just makes sense as you're saying it out loud.
- 5:25I Hate Talking: If you're bigger, then you fall.
- 5:28I Hate Talking: Bigger.
- 5:30I Hate Talking: So just shortening it, the bigger the fall.
- 5:34I Hate Talking: I don't think, yeah, I mean, I buy that.
- 5:37I Hate Talking: I don't think there's anything um nefarious or argumentative about that, right?
- 5:43I Hate Talking: I don't think so.
- 5:45I Hate Talking: It's just an interesting historical.
- 5:48I Hate Talking: Use of the word the that is not actually the but is pa.
- 5:52I Hate Talking: Is there other times the word the is not an article?
- 5:56I Hate Talking: No, it's always these comparative statements if then, if when, where pa would be.
- 6:04I Hate Talking: Interchangeably used, that is not an article.
- 6:07I Hate Talking: So we just took paw and added the instead.
- 6:11I Hate Talking: Yes, they were used interchangeably and the stuck around and pa did not.
- 6:15I Hate Talking: Are there other times that paw?
- 6:18I Hate Talking: Has been used that you know of in our language.
- 6:22I Hate Talking: So I mean, that's uh an example phrase.
- 6:26I Hate Talking: The bigger they are, the harder they will fall.
- 6:28I Hate Talking: There's other, I'm sure, example sentences where they, if you are comparing a condition.
- 6:35I Hate Talking: To a particular outcome that probably the is not an article, but it is actually this pa leftover.
- 6:44I Hate Talking: OK.
- 6:45I Hate Talking: Interesting.
- 6:46I Hate Talking: Have now successfully taught 4 children how to read.
- 6:52I Hate Talking: So I won't say which one, but you have a 25% chance of guessing.
- 6:57I Hate Talking: There was one kid.
- 6:59I Hate Talking: Who could not read the word the Specific child who is intelligent like.
- 7:06I Hate Talking: Advance comparative to siblings, could not get the word the down, THE.
- 7:13I Hate Talking: I spent hours and trying to train him and he could read.
- 7:19I Hate Talking: Anytime he came to the word the, it was like a foreign language, and I don't know what that word did to his brain.
- 7:27I Hate Talking: I spoke to so many professionals like seasoned trainer, reading trainers.
- 7:33I Hate Talking: Even speech pathologist and OT, we spoke about why he cannot, his brain does not translate the word the PHE.
- 7:45I Hate Talking: And finally, one person gave me a suggestion just to write it in a bunch of other words, but write that one multiple times on a paper.
- 7:54I Hate Talking: Put it all around the house and then give him a Nerf gun.
- 7:59I Hate Talking: Cause that's his favorite thing to do at that time.
- 8:02I Hate Talking: And he had to shoot anytime he read the read the word the.
- 8:07I Hate Talking: We just went around the house for several days.
- 8:11I Hate Talking: And read different words, and if it said the, he'd shoot at it with a Nerf gun.
- 8:17I Hate Talking: That's the only way we could get in his brain, the word the.
- 8:22I Hate Talking: He could read and.
- 8:24I Hate Talking: And All these articles like that, or any other word, the word the, it literally was a foreign language.
- 8:32I Hate Talking: So, I had these flashbacks as you're talking about the word the, and how Difficult and a long process that was to train him to worry, and I still have no idea.
- 8:44I Hate Talking: Why he couldn't read it, but after that erf gone week.
- 8:49I Hate Talking: He finally knows the word that.
- 8:51I Hate Talking: There you go.
- 8:53I Hate Talking: So you didn't have trouble with articles of A or AN.
- 8:56I Hate Talking: Well, I will say in his justification, he'd always rate it as and.
- 9:01I Hate Talking: But he'd always read and A and D as and also.
- 9:07I Hate Talking: The two were the same to his brain, the.
- 9:09I Hate Talking: He would say, and for years.
- 9:13I Hate Talking: I guess, I don't know.
- 9:15I Hate Talking: I mean, in the English language, articles are sort of not really all that helpful.
- 9:19I Hate Talking: Like you could say cup is gray.
- 9:22I Hate Talking: And you'll get the same concept concept as the cup is great, but if you're reading the word, the sentence, the word the shows up.
- 9:32I Hate Talking: Mean proportionately.
- 9:34I Hate Talking: I don't even, I can't, when I say like 80, 90% of the time a sentence has the word done it, right?
- 9:41I Hate Talking: Or am I exaggerating?
- 9:43I Hate Talking: I don't know, we can maybe do some offline statistics, but that seems a bit high to me.
- 9:50I Hate Talking: I don't know the word the is in.
- 9:53I Hate Talking: A lot of American sentences.
- 9:56I Hate Talking: Probably and maybe that's why it's an issue is in a lot of Germanic languages, you don't necessarily have an indefinite article, you will have a definite article.
- 10:06I Hate Talking: So you'll have actually like a particular.
- 10:09I Hate Talking: Number associated with the subject, like 1, like there is 1 gray cup, and instead of the gray cup, it's There is one great cup There, but see, I think you're saying there and the.
- 10:26I Hate Talking: You're using them, OK, yes, so to rephrase that then it would be the gray cup in English versus one gray cup in Germanic languages.
- 10:36I Hate Talking: So, and Japanese probably has.
- 10:39I Hate Talking: Some things where it is either a specific number or indeterminate number, and those have different descriptions.
- 10:47I Hate Talking: Yeah, I don't think they use the word necessarily the in, at least there are very limited Japanese learning.
- 10:54I Hate Talking: Oh, I've been reflecting on this with the comparative statements, and I think you could actually use the as a comparative if when statement regardless of a particular phrase.
- 11:06I Hate Talking: But if you're using it in a way that is a comparative statement or some sort of conditional statement, That it works all the time.
- 11:16I Hate Talking: So you could say, The more alive a toy is, the more likely they are to be part of Toy Story.
- 11:23I Hate Talking: So, the more alive they are, the more likely they are part of Toy Story.
- 11:29I Hate Talking: Right, that is not an article that refers to any particular subject.
- 11:33I Hate Talking: Continue on to disagree with you, some of them that are not alive, quote unquote.
- 11:39I Hate Talking: We're still alive in the story, right?
- 11:42I Hate Talking: Well, I think it goes to the fact that whatever the kid or kids imagine.
- 11:51I Hate Talking: And whatever particular scenarios they put these toys in is sort of the same level of liveliness as well as sort of cognition as it comes about in Toy Story 3.
- 12:04I Hate Talking: So for all our listeners, spoiler alerts ahead, Toy Story 3, if you haven't watched it by now, stop and watch it -- and then listen -- and then listen.
- 12:12I Hate Talking: You've had plenty of time.
- 12:14I Hate Talking: So.
- 12:15I Hate Talking: I watched the previews, or not necessarily previews, but like read this.
- 12:20I Hate Talking: Sort of synopsis of Toy Story 4, and I don't think I've ever watched it.
- 12:27I Hate Talking: OK, so, so no one gave me any Toy Story 4 spoilers.
- 12:31I Hate Talking: -- No -- spoilers.
- 12:32I Hate Talking: I fully agree.
- 12:34I Hate Talking: I do not know if I've watched 4.
- 12:36I Hate Talking: I know there's Forky, I know the character.
- 12:40I Hate Talking: Right, cause they were like part of a McDonald's Happy Meal or something at the time.
- 12:45I Hate Talking: I don't even know.
- 12:46I Hate Talking: I don't think I've watched 4 before.
- 12:49I Hate Talking: Our children never watched 3.
- 12:51I Hate Talking: Well, -- some -- of It's a, it's a sort of a dark movie.
- 12:57I Hate Talking: It was a pretty traumatic night when we watched it the other day, yeah.
- 13:01I Hate Talking: Hey, uh, Which I mean, Disney was in line with doing it that way because it was like, what, 10 years after the first one came out.
- 13:11I Hate Talking: So like the little kids that watched this would have been teenagers, essentially, so they were ready for the dark thematic elements of Toy Story 3.
- 13:20I Hate Talking: I had definitely watched 3, but it had been decades.
- 13:25I Hate Talking: Our kids all admitted that they had apparently not watched it.
- 13:30I Hate Talking: Had you watched it until this week?
- 13:32I Hate Talking: Yeah, I had watched it before, but I think it was pre-kids.
- 13:34I Hate Talking: Yeah, we definitely didn't have kids.
- 13:36I Hate Talking: OK, so, so, and again, I don't think any of us have watched 4.
- 13:42I Hate Talking: It's -- quite -- possible.
- 13:44I Hate Talking: That's crazy.
- 13:44I Hate Talking: It just kind of missed us because, when it came out, we had kids, but they were really little.
- 13:50I Hate Talking: They were into cars.
- 13:52I Hate Talking: -- That was our -- life was.
- 13:54I Hate Talking: When did cars come out compared to Toy Story 4?
- 13:57I Hate Talking: Because yes, they were definitely more into cars.
- 14:02I Hate Talking: Cars 2, cars 3 m tall tales.
- 14:05I Hate Talking: All the things that go along with that.
- 14:08I Hate Talking: Lightning McQueen catchow.
- 14:10I Hate Talking: I think we've referred to Lightning McQueen many times on this podcast before.
- 14:14I Hate Talking: Yeah, I, that will 100% be a.
- 14:17I Hate Talking: I feel like yours in my childhood memory of like raising kids was Lightning McQueen.
- 14:25I Hate Talking: Yeah, we would have been in that spot for us personally.
- 14:29I Hate Talking: That kind of didn't overlap.
- 14:32I Hate Talking: So cars one.
- 14:34I Hate Talking: Which, man, I still have that the memorized word for word.
- 14:38I Hate Talking: Was 06.
- 14:40I Hate Talking: Now, we did not have kids in 06.
- 14:42I Hate Talking: Cars 2 was 11, again, we didn't have kids in 11, but Cars three was in 2017.
- 14:50I Hate Talking: We saw Cars three in the theaters with two of our kids.
- 14:55I Hate Talking: But I remember our one kid speaking the entire time.
- 15:00I Hate Talking: Do you remember he'd be like, Lightning, I made her.
- 15:03I Hate Talking: Like he was, he was so happy, like as if they were talking to him and friends.
- 15:08I Hate Talking: It may have been their first movie ever too, right?
- 15:11I Hate Talking: So Curse 3, they saw in theaters.
- 15:15I Hate Talking: By then they were very invested.
- 15:17I Hate Talking: But neither of them were born in Cars one or two.
- 15:22I Hate Talking: I see.
- 15:23I Hate Talking: So we, so Cars 1 2006.
- 15:25I Hate Talking: When did Toy Story 4 come out?
- 15:28I Hate Talking: Toy Story, oh well, Toy Story 3, the one we just watched, came out in 20,010.
- 15:33I Hate Talking: And again, we didn't have any kids then, but we were married, which makes sense why we don't know it very well.
- 15:40I Hate Talking: I guess so.
- 15:41I Hate Talking: I wasn't even a nanny by then.
- 15:43I Hate Talking: That's why it's very vague.
- 15:44I Hate Talking: Now Toy Story 4.
- 15:47I Hate Talking: Came out in 19.
- 15:49I Hate Talking: So we did have 3 kids, but I don't think they were in the.
- 15:54I Hate Talking: Phase of Toy Story.
- 15:57I Hate Talking: They weren't into it, they were fully into cars.
- 16:01I Hate Talking: Everything we did.
- 16:02I Hate Talking: At that age was cars themed.
- 16:06I Hate Talking: So I think we just didn't watch it.
- 16:08I Hate Talking: I guess it just missed us somehow.
- 16:11I Hate Talking: Interesting because I am.
- 16:13I Hate Talking: Pretty certain that we haven't watched it, and I was shocked at how much our kids, and I think they were shocked too that they didn't know Toy Story 3.
- 16:23I Hate Talking: They knew 1 and 2, and 3 was pretty, like you said, uh, dark, yeah, dark, that's probably true, but that 2019 timeline would have lined up with when they were eating Happy Meals, so.
- 16:35I Hate Talking: That's why they would have known Forky, because I think Forky was like a -- Happy Meal -- toy.
- 16:41I Hate Talking: So even if we didn't watch it, they would have been old enough to order a Happy Meal.
- 16:45I Hate Talking: Or request one and we paid for it, yes.
- 16:49I Hate Talking: They did not order it.
- 16:52I Hate Talking: They did not go on their McDonald's app and put in Happy Meal with Forky the toy, so.
- 16:57I Hate Talking: The Toy Story 3 movie.
- 17:01I Hate Talking: Going back to the particular cognition or aliveness, as it were, of various toys seems to be based on how much cognition or aliveness the child ascribes to said toy during their particular playtime, because I'm specifically thinking of Big Baby, where big baby cannot talk, but does seem to have some basic level of cognition.
- 17:29I Hate Talking: And self-awareness, but that is because the child and probably all children alike treat big baby as a baby.
- 17:38I Hate Talking: So baby can only function as a baby.
- 17:42I Hate Talking: OK, -- so -- I never matured over.
- 17:45I Hate Talking: There's no maturation.
- 17:47I Hate Talking: It's just the fact that The child imagined.
- 17:53I Hate Talking: The baby only having the cognition and self-awareness of a baby.
- 17:58I Hate Talking: OK, so theoretically, you're arguing that this baby doll in the story.
- 18:04I Hate Talking: This one girl had big baby.
- 18:08I Hate Talking: Daisy, right?
- 18:09I Hate Talking: They treated it like a baby.
- 18:12I Hate Talking: So it never matured or never developed more cognition than that.
- 18:18I Hate Talking: If somebody also had that baby and in their imagination.
- 18:23I Hate Talking: It did mature, that baby doll would be more advanced.
- 18:29I Hate Talking: Possibly.
- 18:30I Hate Talking: The general internet fan theory is that like the toy has a net average of whatever the children imagine it to be.
- 18:40I Hate Talking: So, like, on average, all children that played with a big baby doll imagined it net average as a baby, OK.
- 18:51I Hate Talking: I mean, I guess you'd have to see like if there were.
- 18:55I Hate Talking: Different Actual individual toys.
- 18:59I Hate Talking: That were played with by different children that have different levels of self-awareness and cognition, right, -- a whole different level of seeing the -- same, and it goes back to the fact that it probably is sort of like this net average magic from a child's imagination because Toys within packaging have self-awareness and cognition when they have never been played with.
- 19:26I Hate Talking: Right?
- 19:26I Hate Talking: Yeah, so that would be the question, right?
- 19:28I Hate Talking: Cause the only examples we have, we're so into this, but the only examples we have in Toy Story.
- 19:34I Hate Talking: Of the same toy.
- 19:37I Hate Talking: is when it hasn't been played with, right?
- 19:40I Hate Talking: So when it has been played with, hasn't, so like Buzz and the unpackaged, yeah, Buzz was already at least cognitively able.
- 19:53I Hate Talking: To understand his surroundings when he is unboxed.
- 19:56I Hate Talking: What about, but he was not self-aware.
- 19:58I Hate Talking: So Barbies, right?
- 20:00I Hate Talking: I think this is the most I can relate to.
- 20:03I Hate Talking: And 2, there's a bunch of Barbies in that aisle.
- 20:07I Hate Talking: And in the nighttime they'd have like Barbie parties.
- 20:11I Hate Talking: And they were just like party people, they weren't like aware that they were dolls or whatnot.
- 20:18I Hate Talking: And then you go to 3 and there's Barbie and Ken, and they meet.
- 20:23I Hate Talking: And Ken's very advanced.
- 20:26I Hate Talking: And like befriends Barbie and they have this romance and yada yada, right?
- 20:33I Hate Talking: So how does that play into your theory?
- 20:35I Hate Talking: Yeah, I think it still supports it because Ken and Barbie and all the different Barbies have the same general level of cognition.
- 20:45I Hate Talking: It's not like one, and they were also probably never actually played with for the toy store toy store Barbies, they're still for sale.
- 20:56I Hate Talking: Right, that's why they were just partying at night.
- 20:59I Hate Talking: Right, so, Big Baby and all big baby dolls.
- 21:03I Hate Talking: Assume the net average.
- 21:06I Hate Talking: Magic from the children that imagine them only as babies.
- 21:14I Hate Talking: And if there was maybe one child that imagined them as like a fully functioning cognitive child versus the 999 children that imagine them as a baby that They'll get like a tiny boost of cognition, but at the end of the day, net average, they are still a big baby.
- 21:35I Hate Talking: OK, yeah, I totally buy that.
- 21:38I Hate Talking: Is that cause the kids' cognition or is that just how they are created and developed?
- 21:43I Hate Talking: That's how the children are imagining them to behave.
- 21:46I Hate Talking: And this is the same thing that we talked about last time with bullseye that he cannot speak or have a because all the children on average imagine him only as a horse.
- 21:58I Hate Talking: Right, which is a different thing, a horse that a cowboy rides versus like.
- 22:03I Hate Talking: Dinosaur that attacks things.
- 22:07I Hate Talking: Right, and could be again on Net average, some.
- 22:13I Hate Talking: Form of cognition where they can speak and interact with other characters.
- 22:18I Hate Talking: Yes, hey, uh, same thing for the teddy bear.
- 22:21I Hate Talking: What's the teddy bear's name?
- 22:23I Hate Talking: Winslow, Oslo, no, no, something like that.
- 22:28I Hate Talking: It's a strange name, but it's Ends with an O.
- 22:34I Hate Talking: Lotso, lotso.
- 22:37I Hate Talking: See, it does end with an O.
- 22:38I Hate Talking: -- I was -- right.
- 22:39I Hate Talking: It starts, it's the technical term is lotso hugging, the bear -- smells -- like strawberries, so, so shortened for lotso.
- 22:48I Hate Talking: Right.
- 22:50I Hate Talking: So Lotso would have been, again, net average imagined as a particular character that has cognition, speech, ability to reason, things like that.
- 23:01I Hate Talking: And then at some point became self-aware because like we discussed last time, it still seems like self-awareness is not necessarily imbued by children's imagination, but more of their actual experience as a toy.
- 23:13I Hate Talking: Almost utilitarian.
- 23:15I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 23:17I Hate Talking: And then a tortilla can become a toy.
- 23:19I Hate Talking: So we learned that in Toy Story 3 as well.
- 23:21I Hate Talking: Oh yeah, I was like, what?
- 23:24I Hate Talking: You're right, -- because -- yeah, so where is.
- 23:27I Hate Talking: The central nervous system and cognition could be even say soul of a toy because it was not in the potato.
- 23:38I Hate Talking: This is so deep.
- 23:39I Hate Talking: Well, potatoes are a good example because Mr.
- 23:43I Hate Talking: and Mr.
- 23:43I Hate Talking: Mr.
- 23:44I Hate Talking: and Mrs.
- 23:44I Hate Talking: Potato Head.
- 23:45I Hate Talking: You can see, right, Mrs.
- 23:47I Hate Talking: Potato Head can cover her one eye and she can see where her other eye is located.
- 23:54I Hate Talking: OK, so we've at least established that the eyes do not contain the central nervousness.
- 24:02I Hate Talking: -- And -- somehow they're attached to that.
- 24:04I Hate Talking: It's not like she could take an eye and put it on Mr.
- 24:09I Hate Talking: Potato Head, it still belongs to her.
- 24:11I Hate Talking: Perhaps we have not actually seen that proven out so far in the Toy Story series.
- 24:17I Hate Talking: I've not seen a mixed potato person.
- 24:22I Hate Talking: A Mr.
- 24:23I Hate Talking: and Mrs.
- 24:24I Hate Talking: jumbled up.
- 24:26I Hate Talking: The jumbled up, that would be a very, -- which -- is 100% something that kids do, because if you have a whole bucket of characters and you maybe put a mustache.
- 24:36I Hate Talking: And then give it a bow and it's really funny.
- 24:39I Hate Talking: So this goes back to the question, where is the central nervousness of a potato head?
- 24:43I Hate Talking: Cause it's not in the potato.
- 24:45I Hate Talking: We learned that because they Take control of a tortilla.
- 24:49I Hate Talking: It's not the eye because that is like separate from the eyes, right.
- 24:54I Hate Talking: It's not like the ear, right, because from Toy Story one, Mr.
- 25:00I Hate Talking: Potato says like, hey, where's my ear?
- 25:02I Hate Talking: So he has a central nervousness aside from his ear.
- 25:05I Hate Talking: So what does Reddit say?
- 25:07I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 25:08I Hate Talking: I have not asked Reddit, so it's not eyes, it's not ears, it's probably not the mustache.
- 25:12I Hate Talking: It's not the body.
- 25:14I Hate Talking: -- It's not the -- body, right?
- 25:15I Hate Talking: That's a tortilla thing, tortilla.
- 25:16I Hate Talking: Is it, it's not the hat because he can go on without the hat.
- 25:23I Hate Talking: So it would either be like the feet or the nose.
- 25:27I Hate Talking: So perhaps we'll have to do more research on this to see if Mr.
- 25:32I Hate Talking: and Mrs.
- 25:32I Hate Talking: Potato Head can function.
- 25:34I Hate Talking: As a cognitive living being in the Toy Story multiverse without any of those particular parts.
- 25:42I Hate Talking: Well.
- 25:43I Hate Talking: I like As a human, you know you can cut your feet off and you're still a human as long as you didn't lose like enough blood, right?
- 25:53I Hate Talking: What happens if you cut your nose and like that whole section of your head off?
- 26:00I Hate Talking: Well, didn't somebody do that?
- 26:02I Hate Talking: I don't know, an ear.
- 26:04I Hate Talking: -- Are you thinking -- that's Picasso did an ear.
- 26:07I Hate Talking: There's some guy that thought he was either like very beautiful or very ugly and cut off his nose.
- 26:12I Hate Talking: I'm saying, OK, cut off like the whole function because, OK, like.
- 26:18I Hate Talking: There's been times for me, I, has it ever happened to you where you laugh so hard?
- 26:24I Hate Talking: That like something comes up your nose, like you're drinking and then like.
- 26:28I Hate Talking: Right, it's connected.
- 26:30I Hate Talking: Your nose and your mouth are connected.
- 26:33I Hate Talking: I mean, I've vomited through my nose as a young child.
- 26:37I Hate Talking: No, I'm not never, -- but I have laughed through my -- nose.
- 26:44I Hate Talking: I've not laughed through my nose.
- 26:45I Hate Talking: I usually don't laugh at that very much, so you don't.
- 26:47I Hate Talking: That's probably why everyone, everyone listening knows, obviously I laugh blame.
- 26:52I Hate Talking: Well, I like, is it connected like your nose into, can you live if you cut out whatever like your nose, obviously I chop.
- 27:02I Hate Talking: My nose off, my nostrils.
- 27:05I Hate Talking: OK, I can breathe through my mouth.
- 27:06I Hate Talking: What about all those inclined stuff?
- 27:10I Hate Talking: Will that damage something?
- 27:12I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 27:14I Hate Talking: I mean, I suppose that we could inquire of Sid and his different machinations with like the combinations of toys, because There was a Barbie doll that was fashioned with a fishing rod.
- 27:28I Hate Talking: And it seems like probably the rod, right, it seems like the legs retain some sort of their cognition from the Barbie doll, and a fishing rod would not be alive in any form of.
- 27:42I Hate Talking: -- So -- you're saying the legs, if you have legs, you're.
- 27:46I Hate Talking: A cognitive being.
- 27:48I Hate Talking: -- That's -- in the world of Toy Story.
- 27:52I Hate Talking: Maybe, I mean, Slinky refers to this, that his back end actually has its own sort of consciousness.
- 28:01I Hate Talking: OK, so you are.
- 28:04I Hate Talking: Pro, you have to have likes to have a.
- 28:08I Hate Talking: I'm not saying you have to have legs.
- 28:10I Hate Talking: I'm saying that the legs or like lower extremities of mobility is where a toy's central nervous system is.
- 28:22I Hate Talking: Toy, I like that you put a toy in there so you don't get in trouble cause you sound very ablest right now.
- 28:28I Hate Talking: I mean, we'll have to maybe rewatch Toy Story 123, and then 4 to see if there's any toys.
- 28:39I Hate Talking: That are cognitively able to process their surroundings.
- 28:43I Hate Talking: That don't have legs.
- 28:45I Hate Talking: Now there's the, uh, there's one Toy Story 2 is breaking the theory.
- 28:50I Hate Talking: It isn't like the strong man.
- 28:54I Hate Talking: Doesn't he have like no legs at all?
- 28:57I Hate Talking: Strong man.
- 28:59I Hate Talking: The guy who's like a suction cup to the.
- 29:03I Hate Talking: Table.
- 29:05I Hate Talking: Is that what his legs are, is a suction cup?
- 29:07I Hate Talking: -- I -- think it's a suction cup.
- 29:08I Hate Talking: We have to look it up.
- 29:09I Hate Talking: Now, again, you're talking about Toy Story 4, then you're like, is it Forky, the fork?
- 29:16I Hate Talking: Yeah, legs.
- 29:17I Hate Talking: He's -- he -- has like pipe cleaners, pipe cleaner legs, and -- we're -- gonna have to watch it and hands.
- 29:24I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 29:24I Hate Talking: All right, so you're like referencing all these things.
- 29:28I Hate Talking: I just think that the potato head is like a very interesting conundrum.
- 29:33I Hate Talking: Where is the central nervousness and like, quote unquote soul of a potato head?
- 29:40I Hate Talking: Because it's certainly not in the potato and it's not in the eye.
- 29:43I Hate Talking: I'm pretty sure it's not in the ear or the hat.
- 29:46I Hate Talking: He doesn't always have a mustache, so this leaves like the nose and the feet.
- 29:52I Hate Talking: That's it.
- 29:52I Hate Talking: I would have fully argued it was a potato itself, but you're right.
- 29:58I Hate Talking: Since we don't, even when it happened, I'll have to go back and watch that particular scene and see sort of when his Cognition comes alive.
- 30:08I Hate Talking: By when he places a particular body part into the tortilla.
- 30:12I Hate Talking: That may be an enlightening fact.
- 30:16I Hate Talking: Yeah, because I don't know when that happened after it.
- 30:22I Hate Talking: His arms are sort of independently able to do things, so it's sort of like what's the, the Addams Family, sort of like, the hand.
- 30:32I Hate Talking: The hand has a name, right?
- 30:33I Hate Talking: I was right.
- 30:35I Hate Talking: It's the thing.
- 30:36I Hate Talking: Well, now it's just referred to as thing or thingte thing.
- 30:42I Hate Talking: Right, because the doesn't count.
- 30:44I Hate Talking: There you go.
- 30:48I Hate Talking: So you could call it, what was it, you call it, huh?
- 30:52I Hate Talking: Uh, -- versus -- the coughing.
- 30:55I Hate Talking: -- I -- guess so.
- 30:57I Hate Talking: All right, so, if you likewise have more questions and answers from this podcast, you can always let us know in a comment, email, or text message, and perhaps there's other people that have not seen the Toy Story series and this probably is not a good introduction into the Toy Story universe, but share it nonetheless.
- 31:20I Hate Talking: OK, 12 or 3, rate your favorites.
- 31:23I Hate Talking: One is 11 is so it's the most organic and like original storyline.
- 31:29I Hate Talking: 2 is gonna come up as 3, I think, because 3 deals with a lot of existential issues and some.
- 31:40I Hate Talking: Things on like consciousness in general that I think are interesting.
- 31:44I Hate Talking: Yeah, I liked 3 way more than I remembered liking 3.
- 31:49I Hate Talking: 2, I think it's just like a rip off of like other movies.
- 31:53I Hate Talking: I mean, it has like a storyline, but there's so much like it's, yeah, it's cheapened by the fact that they're trying to like jam in all these other -- cultural references to -- it.
- 32:06I Hate Talking: I liked it, but I agree.
- 32:08I Hate Talking: I think it's cheapened.
- 32:10I Hate Talking: All right, I'd say 132 so far.
- 32:13I Hate Talking: Same.
- 32:13I Hate Talking: All right, we'll find out next week.
- 32:16I Hate Talking: So from your friends at I Hate Talking, until next time, remember, it is only through talking that we begin the journey to understanding.
