- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. A child was issued a ticket after
- 0:09Speaker 2: a collision between an e-bike and an e-scooter in the
- 0:13Speaker 2: downtown on Wednesday afternoon. Video has been circulating on social
- 0:17Speaker 2: media of a large group of what appear to be
- 0:19Speaker 2: children and young people riding e-bikes and e-scooters in the
- 0:23Speaker 2: Columbus Drive area. RNC say there are no calls related
- 0:27Speaker 2: to that incident on their call sheet, However, an officer
- 0:31Speaker 2: on patrol happened to notice approximately 40 or more people
- 0:35Speaker 2: on similar machines in the downtown area around 3.30 Wednesday afternoon.
- 0:40Speaker 2: RNC Constable Steph Myers says the officer eventually came across
- 0:44Speaker 2: a collision involving two people, ages 11 and 12.
- 0:49Speaker 1: The officer did stop and ensure their well-being firstly, but
- 0:53Speaker 1: they also spoke with those youth, spoke with their parents
- 0:56Speaker 1: and did issue a summary offence ticket to one of
- 0:58Speaker 1: the operators. So again, we're asking parents, guardians to have
- 1:02Speaker 1: those conversations with the youth in your lives who have
- 1:05Speaker 1: those vehicles about safe operation.
- 1:08Speaker 2: The provincial government has promised to introduce legislation related to
- 1:11Speaker 2: the use of e-bikes and e-scooters in the fall sitting
- 1:14Speaker 2: of the House of Assembly. The Innu Nation says a
- 1:18Speaker 2: serious incident involving RCMP officers and an Innu man in
- 1:22Speaker 2: Shedishi underscores long-standing concerns about policing in its communities and
- 1:27Speaker 2: the need to remove barriers preventing them from developing their
- 1:31Speaker 2: own police service. Linda Swain reports.
- 1:34Speaker 3: The Innu say they have been calling for an Innu
- 1:36Speaker 3: police service for at least a decade, but current provincial
- 1:39Speaker 3: legislation does not provide for establishing such a police service
- 1:43Speaker 3: outside the existing RCMP or RNC structures. The Innu Nation
- 1:47Speaker 3: says without the necessary provincial legislation, it cannot address funding
- 1:51Speaker 3: to begin developing their own police service. Grand Chief Jody
- 1:54Speaker 3: Ashini says they can't wait for the completion of their
- 1:56Speaker 3: treaty negotiations to begin building policing capacity. The Inusay commanding
- 2:01Speaker 3: officer of the Labrador District, Inspector Danny Williams, has committed
- 2:05Speaker 3: to raising the issue of including Innu community services officers
- 2:09Speaker 3: in house calls in Cheheji and Natwashish with the RCMP's
- 2:12Speaker 3: criminal operations.
- 2:14Speaker 2: The agency in charge of running long-term care homes in
- 2:17Speaker 2: the province has accepted all recommendations from the Auditor General
- 2:22Speaker 2: after a report which was highly critical of the ways
- 2:25Speaker 2: in which things are being done. AG Denise Hanrahan's last
- 2:28Speaker 2: report dealt with privately run homes, but this one focused
- 2:32Speaker 2: on government-run facilities such as Pleasant View Towers and St.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Luke's.
- 2:37Speaker 2: She found many deficiencies including a lack of background and
- 2:40Speaker 2: vulnerable sector checks, rotting food in fridges and obstructed hallways
- 2:45Speaker 2: and fire exits. She says one of the more concerning
- 2:48Speaker 2: aspects is the food safety component, which stem from a
- 2:51Speaker 2: 2015 report where many of the recommendations were not followed.
- 2:57Speaker 4: So certainly some of the most concerning findings in the
- 3:00Speaker 4: food section for me had to do with the swallowing assessments.
- 3:03Speaker 4: And the fact that there may not be enough staff
- 3:06Speaker 4: that are trained to be able to deal with choking situations,
- 3:09Speaker 4: certainly those are major requirements in any long-term care facility.
- 3:13Speaker 4: And when we see that a third of the ones
- 3:15Speaker 4: we tested weren't getting done appropriately or in a timely manner,
- 3:19Speaker 4: it's very concerning.
- 3:20Speaker 2: According to current projections, about a third of the population
- 3:23Speaker 2: will reside in such facilities by 2043. Newfoundland and Labrador
- 3:28Speaker 2: Health Services has accepted all 17 recommendations aimed at it,
- 3:32Speaker 2: while the Department of Seniors has accepted the two recommendations
- 3:36Speaker 2: which apply to it. The Teachers Union says the province
- 3:40Speaker 2: has a major retention and recruitment issue in the K-12 system.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Union President Dale Lamb says schools are squeezed and with
- 3:49Speaker 2: increasing incidents of violence in schools, teachers are seeking the
- 3:52Speaker 2: supports they need just to keep kids safe and educated.
- 3:56Speaker 5: We're launching a school safety campaign next week about everyone
- 4:00Speaker 5: working together to stop school violence. You know, all parties
- 4:05Speaker 5: have a place to play. All can't come back on teachers.
- 4:07Speaker 2: He cites the horrific Tumbler Ridge incident in British Columbia
- 4:11Speaker 2: earlier this year and the report that was released this week.
- 4:15Speaker 5: You can't almost say Tumblr reads without getting emotional as
- 4:18Speaker 5: a teacher or as a Canadian citizen. So, you know,
- 4:21Speaker 5: that was really significant yesterday, but it really shows the
- 4:25Speaker 5: importance of government providing us with direction, providing us with information,
- 4:29Speaker 5: and making sure that things are alleviated so that the
- 4:32Speaker 5: violence doesn't make its way into our schools.
- 4:35Speaker 2: There's been a slight decrease in the price of gas
- 4:38Speaker 2: heading into the long weekend. The PUB has lowered the
- 4:41Speaker 2: price by two and a half cents per liter. There's
- 4:44Speaker 2: hardly any change in the price of all other fuels.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Marine Atlantic's newest vessel is in the country. The Il
- 4:51Speaker 2: Rouge arrived in North Sydney the other day. Now begins
- 4:55Speaker 2: the final stretch of preparations before the ferry goes into
- 4:58Speaker 2: service next month. That includes familiarizing staff with the ship,
- 5:02Speaker 2: training and reflagging activities. Photos can be seen online at vocm.com.
- 5:09Speaker 2: That's your news, I'm Sarah Strickland.
