- 0:00Is there an SEC bias in the college football polling?
- 0:05We're going to compare SEC and Big 10.
- 0:07I apologize to all of you. If you're a fan of a different
- 0:10conference, Notre Dame, whatever it is, we're going to compare
- 0:13SEC. We're going to compare Big 10.
- 0:17Latest poll, week 13. All right, let's start at the
- 0:21top. Now, my argument is more for the
- 0:25middle part of these conferences, but let's be fair.
- 0:28Let's talk about all the teams. OK, let's start with the first
- 0:33two teams in the poll. Ohio State undefeated 10 and O
- 0:38Indiana undefeated 11 and O, both obviously Big 10 teams one
- 0:44and two. OK then #3 the only undefeated
- 0:49team out of the SEC, Texas A and M10 and O.
- 0:52So let's just start there 123. Now, if you think there is a an
- 0:58SEC bias in the polling and there could be slightly, we'll,
- 1:02we'll break it down. But look at look at the teams I
- 1:05just mentioned, right? The, the pollsters believe that
- 1:09the, the undefeated teams, the three undefeated teams that we
- 1:14care about here, Ohio State, Indiana, Texas A&M, they feel
- 1:19like the Big 10 teams are better than the one undefeated SEC team
- 1:25in Texas A&M. And we're going to kind of go
- 1:27over this superficially at first.
- 1:29So there you go. Let's move on then to the one
- 1:32loss teams. OK, so after Texas A&M, you have
- 1:36the one loss teams, so Georgia nine and one, Ole Miss 10 and 1.
- 1:42So in terms of the top tier, pollsters think that the best of
- 1:47the best teams, that the Big 10 teams are the best.
- 1:51And then if you want to drop, I don't even think it's fair to
- 1:53call this the second tier. I would still call these elite
- 1:56teams. We're talking about one loss
- 1:58teams here. So pollsters think that the SEC
- 2:02teams are better than the Big 10 team with one loss.
- 2:07So we're talking Georgia at #4 they're nine and one.
- 2:11We're talking about Ole Miss at #5 they're 10 and one, both
- 2:15ranked higher than Oregon. Oregon nine and one on the
- 2:20season, and their only loss at home to Indiana.
- 2:26Indiana's obviously the number two team in the country, 10
- 2:28point loss, but still. So again, if you're talking
- 2:32about any type of bias, that seems pretty fair to me.
- 2:36With the undefeated nod going to the Big 10 teams, the one loss
- 2:41nods going to the SEC teams over Oregon.
- 2:46We'll skip Texas Tech at what I guess it's technically tied for
- 2:516th in the AP poll. Texas Tech tied for 6th with
- 2:57Oregon. So go down.
- 2:59Now we'll talk about two lost teams, 2 lost teams, and again,
- 3:02we're not going to include Notre Dame and all that.
- 3:05For this particular video, we're comparing the SEC in the Big 10.
- 3:09OK, so you have two lost teams. Highest ranked is Oklahoma at
- 3:148:00 and 2:00. Then you got Notre Dame, but
- 3:17then you have Alabama at 10, also eight and two on the
- 3:22season. So when you're looking at the
- 3:24SEC, this is where I think the argument really gets interesting
- 3:28that the the depth of the SEC, the middle tiers of the SEC.
- 3:35I mean, look, if if you're talking about Alabama and
- 3:39Oklahoma in a middle tier, which again, it's not fair to call it
- 3:42middle tier, but we're talking about two lost teams here.
- 3:45And you also have Vanderbilt in that category.
- 3:50So when you're looking at two loss teams, you have Oklahoma,
- 3:55you have Alabama, and you have Vanderbilt all again ranked
- 4:00ahead of the two loss teams in the Big 10, two loss teams in
- 4:05the Big 10. You got to go down to what USC
- 4:10is ranked 16th at 8:00 and 2:00 on the season and Michigan is
- 4:16ranked 18th at 8:00 and 2:00 on the season.
- 4:20There's actually a three loss SEC team in Texas ranked above a
- 4:26two loss Michigan team right now.
- 4:29Texas is #17. So any type of bias, which I'll
- 4:35be honest with you, I don't want to give away the the point of
- 4:37this video. If there's any bias, I don't
- 4:40think it's anything egregious in 2025 at least.
- 4:43Maybe, maybe back in the day you can make that argument.
- 4:46I'm not even trying to do that, but I have kind of done my
- 4:49research and it started with a, a tweet I put out last night and
- 4:54I was really focusing on the three loss teams because this
- 4:57kind of stood out to me. The fact that all three, three
- 5:01loss teams in the Big 10 are unranked.
- 5:06All three, three loss teams in the ICC are all ranked.
- 5:12Now you're kind of splitting hairs here, but but here's where
- 5:14I think you could see a, a a bit of bias where it's just assumed
- 5:18that the wins in the SEC mean more.
- 5:22And the three loss teams in the SEC, there's just the, the idea
- 5:26that those teams are just better than the Big 10 teams.
- 5:30So in the SEC, I mentioned you have Texas, Texas is ranked 17th
- 5:34in the country. They're seven and three.
- 5:36Tennessee is ranked 20th in the country.
- 5:40They're seven and three. And Mizzou is ranked 23rd in the
- 5:44country. They are also seven and three.
- 5:48And then go to the Big 10 teams. I was mentioned.
- 5:51I was mentioning all seven and three, none of them ranked.
- 5:55So we're talking about Nebraska, we're talking about Illinois,
- 5:59and we're talking about Washington.
- 6:01Now, this is where I think the debate really gets interesting.
- 6:05And so far, if we want to do a quick recap though, according to
- 6:08the polls, Big 10 teams are better at the top, Ohio State,
- 6:13Indiana over Texas A&M, that's the undefeateds according to the
- 6:17polls. The SEC teams then get the nod
- 6:20with the one loss teams, George and Ole Miss Over in Oregon, SEC
- 6:25again gets the nod with the two loss teams, Oklahoma, Alabama,
- 6:31Vanderbilt, There you go. And so they're they're ranked
- 6:36ahead of USC and Michigan. And as I said, I'm repeating
- 6:38myself, but even Texas with three losses is ranked ahead of
- 6:42Michigan at 8:00 and 2:00. So I didn't dive into every part
- 6:46of all of these schedules here, but I did with the seven and
- 6:49three teams. And I just find it interesting.
- 6:51I can't really be mad at Texas being ranked.
- 6:55Texas, look, their losses, they obviously lost to Ohio State,
- 7:01first game of the season, Ohio State number one in the country.
- 7:04They just lose to Georgia. But Texas has some some good
- 7:07wins. Texas beats, don't quote me on
- 7:10this. I believe it's Oklahoma and
- 7:12Vanderbilt. So they have some some good
- 7:14wins. I have no problem with Texas
- 7:17being ranked. On the flip side, also Nebraska
- 7:20at 7 and three. I'm not saying Nebraska should
- 7:22be ranked. Nebraska doesn't have an
- 7:24impressive resume at all. But I think where it gets
- 7:29interesting is and I'll even I'll even take Washington right
- 7:33now. So Washington beat Illinois, but
- 7:38I don't think you can make a case necessarily for Washington
- 7:41being ranked. I think Washington's actually
- 7:42pretty good. I watched them play Ohio State
- 7:45and they kept it pretty close. I think it was like a 24/7 or
- 7:506-8 game, something like that. It was right around the the
- 7:53spread. I think Washington's pretty
- 7:54tough, but I think the real argument here comes down to
- 7:58looking at Tennessee, Mizzou and Illinois.
- 8:03So both Tennessee and Mizzou have what you'd call good
- 8:08losses, right? But they haven't beaten anybody.
- 8:11They haven't beaten anybody that's ranked.
- 8:13I think Mizzou's best win just came to versus Mississippi
- 8:17State. Now Mizzou has some good close
- 8:18losses, obviously, I think 3 points to Alabama, 7 points to
- 8:23Vandy. But it could have been tied
- 8:25basically down to the last play where if they get in the end
- 8:27zone, it's a tie game. Then they had a a bit of a
- 8:30clunker obviously versus Texas A&M, but also Tennessee has some
- 8:35of those close losses, but no real good wins, no ranked wins
- 8:41for either of those teams where if you then bring up Illinois.
- 8:45So here's the real battle. Illinois to me versus Tennessee
- 8:49and Mizzou. So Illinois, they lose to Ohio
- 8:52State by whatever it was 18 or so.
- 8:54Can't remember the exact score, but that's around the spread.
- 8:58Illinois gets absolutely destroyed though.
- 9:01Here's the problem. Illinois gets destroyed by
- 9:05Indiana, now Indiana's number two team in the country.
- 9:07They lose like what, 63 to 10, whatever it was?
- 9:09And then Illinois also loses to Washington, which I think
- 9:12Washington is a good team. And, and maybe if hey, obviously
- 9:16if Washington is ranked, if they're ranked 24th or 23rd,
- 9:20Illinois schedule looks better. And hey, we have another ranked
- 9:23win. But Illinois did beat USC and,
- 9:27and here's my point, it's kind of what you focus on, but
- 9:30Illinois by far is the best win of any of those teams.
- 9:33I'm mentioning between Mizzou, Tennessee and Illinois.
- 9:36Illinois has beaten USC and US CS ranked 16th in the country
- 9:43and no ranked wins for Mizzou and for for Tennessee.
- 9:49And so Illinois, look, you lose Ohio State, credible loss.
- 9:54You get absolutely boat race though by Indiana.
- 9:58That's the one that's a real stinker.
- 10:00I mean, it looks terrible on your resume when you lose by 53,
- 10:03whatever the whatever the final score was.
- 10:06So I guess it's also kind of look, there's an eye test here.
- 10:09I'm not even saying that Illinois necessarily would beat
- 10:12Mizzou on a neutral field. Would would Illinois beat
- 10:15Tennessee on a neutral playing field?
- 10:17I'm not sure I understand. You should.
- 10:18You should go to the eye test also.
- 10:21But in terms of resume, it's hard to make the case, it's hard
- 10:25to make the case for me that Mizzou and Tennessee should be
- 10:29ranked over Illinois right now at this point in the season in
- 10:32terms of their resumes. Because again, Illinois has the
- 10:36best win by far against USC. And their losses came to really
- 10:40good teams to Ohio State, ranked number one to Indiana.
- 10:44But that was a blowout. So I get it.
- 10:46And then also Washington, which is a pretty good team.
- 10:48Washington receiving votes in both polls in the, in the
- 10:52coaches poll, Washington is technically what, the 2620720820
- 10:589th team in the country in the coaches poll and Illinois is
- 11:02actually the what, the 28th ranked team in the coaches poll.
- 11:07And look, Illinois is the 27th ranked team in the AP poll, so
- 11:11it's not like they're that far off from being ranked.
- 11:14But I just, I, I find the argument kind of interesting.
- 11:18So there you go. I'm not going to go too long,
- 11:20but look, I think people know I'm an Ohio State fan.
- 11:23I grew up in Big 10 country. I like to poke fun at the SEC.
- 11:27We know the SEC has been great for years and years and years.
- 11:30Still maybe the the best conference in terms of depth.
- 11:33The Big 10 has kind of taken over winning national
- 11:35championships the last couple years, Michigan and Ohio State.
- 11:38Even last year Oregon was ranked number one for a huge part of
- 11:42the season. Indiana has taken a step, but I
- 11:45think it's fair to say that there's, look, I'm not going to
- 11:48complain too much. I don't think there's really
- 11:50that much SEC bias. I can nitpick an Illinois versus
- 11:54a Mizzou, but it's really not that big of a deal.
- 11:58Look, we'll, we'll be able to find out hopefully.
- 12:01And don't tell me about bowl games.
- 12:02I don't care about these bowl games if they're not in the
- 12:05College Football Playoff where we don't have guys playing
- 12:09because of opt outs. The transfer portal is open.
- 12:12I mean, it'd be great if I could see all these seven and three
- 12:14teams play each other. If you could see seven and
- 12:17three, Mizzou versus 7 and three, Illinois.
- 12:20If you could see, you know, 8 and two, USC versus 8 and two,
- 12:24Vandy or at the end of the year, you know, 10 and two, nine and
- 12:26three. You know what I'm talking about.
- 12:28Whatever they end up with, you know, if they have 4 losses, 3
- 12:30losses, 2 losses, that's where we can really see, you know,
- 12:34who's better, Big 10 or SEC? If we see some of these teams
- 12:38match up, I do think we're going to see some of these match ups
- 12:40in the College Football Playoff. But it won't always be
- 12:42undefeated versus undefeated. It won't always be one loss
- 12:45versus one loss. It might be a A2 loss SEC team
- 12:48versus A1 loss Big 10 or vice versa.
- 12:51So it's not exactly apples to apples.
- 12:54But anyway, some food for thought there.
- 12:56So there you go. If you're one of my Saint Louis
- 12:58viewers, please hook up our sponsors.

- 14:46And yeah, I'd love to say there's this huge SEC bias in
- 14:49the polling, maybe slightly, maybe slightly, but I can't be
- 14:54too mad about it to be honest with you.
- 14:57Eye test also matters. We shall see.
- 14:59But there you go. Thanks for watching, guys.
- 15:02Peace out.
