Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Pacers ridiculous comeback, Iowa lands a portal guard, Bill Seals talks Cyclones
Transcript
- 0:16Hi, good afternoon. Welcome.
- 0:18Miller and Condon here with you on a Thursday.
- 0:21It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:23It's Trent Condon and Ken Miller for the next two hours talking
- 0:26sports with you. Thanks for starting your
- 0:28afternoon here with us. Wherever you're listening in the
- 0:30state of I, we're out there on the I Heart app.
- 0:32We welcome you to the program. Here's what's coming up.
- 0:35We'll talk to Bill Seals. He covers Iowa State
- 0:37cyclonereport.com Cyclones made public their non conference
- 0:41men's basketball schedule earlier this morning.
- 0:44We'll dig into that with Bill. Certainly a lot juicier than
- 0:47most years. Credit to TJ and his staff and
- 0:51even like the exhibition games that are going to be a part of
- 0:53it in the next couple of years. So we'll get into that and other
- 0:56Cyclone topics with Bill Seals coming up here at the bottom of
- 1:00our number one, our number two, our old friend Stephen M Sipple.
- 1:04Sure. We'll talk Nebraska football.
- 1:05We'll talk Big 10 football with Sip, maybe a little basketball
- 1:09as well. Is there a hot seat when it
- 1:13comes to their head coach? We will see about that was
- 1:17simple. Championship coach.
- 1:19Championship coach? He did win a championship.
- 1:21Trent, I'm glad you reminded me that biggie in Vegas.
- 1:24What the hell was the name of that again?
- 1:25The crown. The Crown.
- 1:27We were excited for a couple days of that thing.
- 1:29Bought my plane tickets and actually was out there for the
- 1:32crown, but Iowa sadly wasn't part of it.
- 1:35Looked like they would be. But as we know what happened,
- 1:38Fran Mccaffrey's out. They declined the opportunity to
- 1:40participate. Ben McCollum is in and McCullum
- 1:43on. ERA is underway.
- 1:44So simple on Big 10 stuff to kick off our number 2.
- 1:48And then Bill Bender will join us.
- 1:50We'll talk college football with Bill, do some NBA Eastern
- 1:55Conference game one with Bill. He wrote about it in today's
- 1:57sportingnews.com. And I guess we should start
- 2:01there because the latest is always greatest.
- 2:06Oh boy, this one last night was something had a little bit of
- 2:10everything. I mean, both of the games, both
- 2:12of the winter sports games last night, epic collapses.
- 2:14Oilers just coughed it up. But that that is, you know, not
- 2:19even close to what we witnessed at Madison Square Garden last
- 2:22night. What a game.
- 2:24And what the this Nesmith kid 20 points.
- 2:27You have 10 of them in the final like 58 seconds.
- 2:31You're just knocking 3 pointer after three pointer in, but it
- 2:34didn't matter. Listen, well, it my thought
- 2:37that's a better well maybe I'll get a back door cover.
- 2:41Never that. Though never that it was, it was
- 2:45amazing. I mean, the Halliburton thinking
- 2:47the game is over and going to the Reggie Miller card, which
- 2:50was phenomenal television. Now after that part, I thought
- 2:54they were done. I did too.
- 2:56I thought they were the basketball gods were saying,
- 2:58young man, that's not how we do things.
- 3:01That's going to come back to bite you.
- 3:03But to their credit, they wouldn't let, they wouldn't let
- 3:05it die. So I'll be honest, I had to look
- 3:07up where Nesmith went to school. I do not remember him involved.
- 3:10Yes, he went to Vandy. They.
- 3:12Had, but they didn't. Play very much.
- 3:14Right, Scottie Pippen junior was on that team at That's Another
- 3:17NBA. Guy Pippen Junior was for sure.
- 3:19Yeah, didn't do a whole lot though.
- 3:21No, he only played fourteen games.
- 3:22Must have got hurt because his freshman year he was certainly
- 3:26more involved than that. But my God, what a game.
- 3:30And Halliburton just. But it wasn't that great of a
- 3:34game until the last. And but the clutch gene that
- 3:37apparently is is coming out, it was on display again last night.
- 3:42What a game just to the wherewithal to step back like he
- 3:46did and to to make that shot. And did you think it was all?
- 3:49I thought it was a three. I did too.
- 3:51Yeah. I mean, that's game over.
- 3:52Wow. So I got I was flipping back and
- 3:54forth because I was upstairs so I didn't have the multi TV
- 3:56process after getting the kids down and that and the Iowa
- 3:59baseball team trying to gag it up back and forth.
- 4:02But I left the basketball game not thinking I'm going to have
- 4:05to worry, right? It was a 12 point game.
- 4:08There's 3 minutes left, I think. And I'm like, all right, I'll
- 4:10just lock into the Iowa baseball game the rest of the way.
- 4:13And then I get a text from one of my text groups with my
- 4:15buddies saying this is an incredible.
- 4:18So got back over there and it was when I think it was down to
- 4:22five maybe at that point it. Was A5 pointer.
- 4:24Yep, and a couple of those. And that was the time where I
- 4:26think, well, maybe we're going to get back to recover out of
- 4:28this. And that's where my thought
- 4:30went. But then watching it in real
- 4:32time, 1st to get that deep into the lane and then just jet
- 4:36backwards, right? Where was somebody else
- 4:38defensively? You see him doing that.
- 4:41I I get you don't want to leave your guy open for a three
- 4:44pointer, but you see Halliburton hit reverse like that.
- 4:49Yeah. And no.
- 4:51And nobody stepped up to help. I know it's an incredibly weird
- 4:56basketball play, and that's probably a part of the reason
- 4:58for it, but that was incredibly odd.
- 5:01And then the touch, it dropping, for it to fall like that, it
- 5:07reminded me of a shot Wes Washburn in the NBC championship
- 5:11game, putting you and I in high off the back iron dropped in
- 5:15against Evansville. That's that was the only shot
- 5:17that I can remember like that. And that was a game winner.
- 5:21Thought this was a game winner. And then very quickly and you
- 5:24just see that toe. It's yeah, not so fast.
- 5:27We're going on. We've got 5 more minutes at
- 5:29least. The choke sign, it's.
- 5:31Phenomenal. Now, Knicks fans.
- 5:34Well, New Yorkers, not my cup of tea.
- 5:37They're different. We're wired much differently.
- 5:39Yeah. Yeah.
- 5:40In general here in the Midwest and certainly in the state of
- 5:42Iowa. No question.
- 5:43Than them out there. But the amount of vitriol, anger
- 5:49of Reggie Miller just calling the game, yeah, before the choke
- 5:53sound, right before that, even before it began.
- 5:57What do they want? Him not to be there.
- 6:00Why? Because he's conjures up bad
- 6:03memories. That is the.
- 6:04Stupidest thing, I get it. I totally agree.
- 6:06With you. So whenever we get to a
- 6:08championship event, the analysts couldn't have played Nope for
- 6:10the team before. Not not against your team.
- 6:13Yes, I understand Reggie Miller's history with New York,
- 6:17NY made Reggie Miller. Reggie Miller.
- 6:20With Spike Lee, yes, had a big hand.
- 6:23Without that, he is just known as a great basketball.
- 6:25That's what your sister was pretty good.
- 6:27Yes, that's what maybe not the best basketball player in the
- 6:29family. Right.
- 6:30That's how we'd remember Reggie Bill.
- 6:32But because of that, he turned into a star.
- 6:35He became nationally known. He became a guy that we see in
- 6:38Wendy's commercials. He doesn't have that without
- 6:40any. He doesn't have that without
- 6:42Spike. He doesn't.
- 6:43He doesn't have that without Michael Jordan.
- 6:45Yeah, absolutely. And the battles that were there,
- 6:47that was the period, and he was able to do that.
- 6:50But the dumbness of Knicks fans saying that he shouldn't be on
- 6:54the broadcast. Think about that just a little
- 6:56bit. Just use a little bit of common
- 6:58sense and think. So that has to go for everybody,
- 7:00right? Not just because you had a bad.
- 7:02No, if you beat them, it's OK. If the Knicks get have their way
- 7:06with them, it's just it's OK. Come on.
- 7:09But look at it if Jordan doesn't decide to play baseball.
- 7:12We don't have any of that. We don't have any of it.
- 7:14The way it was going. And maybe we got a couple of
- 7:16Rockets, Bulls, finals, which. Oh my God.
- 7:19What could have been that? But.
- 7:20Just a phenomenal game. I mean, there were there was so
- 7:25there was so much to this game. It it looked like even when when
- 7:31Brunson picked up his fifth foul, like early in the fourth
- 7:33quarter, you're thinking, oh boy, this is this is going to
- 7:36change the trajectory of this game.
- 7:38But they opened up 12, you know, with, with Brunson on the bench
- 7:42and then the 2 looks at the end of it.
- 7:44Brunson had a terrific look. Cat had a terrific look and he
- 7:48was phenomenal in the game last night.
- 7:50His over under threes was 1 1/2. He had two like in the first few
- 7:53minutes, you know, if you bet the under.
- 7:56That sounds like a Kale play. Did Kale tell you that one?
- 7:59No, somebody else that would be a Yeah, The son does like those,
- 8:03by the way, Speaking of Kale, and he works at Circa.
- 8:06Circa's going to make their big announcements today.
- 8:08The contest will be see the light of day what they're going
- 8:13to do. So we look forward to that.
- 8:14Mike Palm will join us with all the details on Survivor and
- 8:18millions from this year. And apparently there's another
- 8:21layer to this and nobody knows what it is.
- 8:23We'll find that out at about four O clock today.
- 8:26But the games themselves, just fascinating.
- 8:28Last night watching, watching it unfold.
- 8:32Namhart was good. I thought, of course,
- 8:34Halliburton was good. Nesmith Siakam's going to beat
- 8:38everybody down the floor when he's going to score.
- 8:40I mean, he's so fast. I'll be tapping.
- 8:43Another another guy. And he got fouled on that dunk
- 8:46in overtime that would have made it I think a four point play at
- 8:49the time made it 3 with that dunk.
- 8:52And you look, he had eight points, 10 that's.
- 8:54All he had but he. Was they were loud?
- 8:56They were loud points when he was in there.
- 8:58McConnell, he's just kind of a pest.
- 9:00It goes back to the conversation we had leading into this.
- 9:03I was surprised. Just in general.
- 9:05I thought there'd be a New York tax about it.
- 9:07Then there was. But the Pacers?
- 9:10I see this as an even series. I do too, and we were both
- 9:13shocked that the that the Knicks were as big of favorites as they
- 9:16were. Now I I keep hearing this as a
- 9:18team of destiny. This is a team of destiny.
- 9:21You know what you got to get by OKC at some point and and I hope
- 9:24that it's it's Minnesota that you have to get by at some point
- 9:27because who doesn't want to see that right?
- 9:29The guys traded for each other. I know I think there's OK C fans
- 9:34name is JoJo. If I if I miss that, apologize.
- 9:37I'm sure we'll hear from you as the series goes on, but just
- 9:41fascinating theatre. I, I can't wait.
- 9:44I hope this thing goes seven games.
- 9:46I want them both to go seven games.
- 9:47It is a phenomenal watch. NBA, which you know, kind of
- 9:52gets a while before their playoffs seemingly get going.
- 9:56I think the NHL goes zero to 100 in game one right in Series 1.
- 9:59And because, at least in my mind, everybody's so evenly
- 10:03matched. Yeah, we've seen so many ones
- 10:04fall in the opening round. You don't get that in the end.
- 10:07I think the 1-2, the 1-2 and four are all gone.
- 10:10And that happens a lot in hockey.
- 10:13Certainly in comparison, the gap between those elite level teams
- 10:16and playoff teams is not a significant accident in the NBA.
- 10:19Nope, I'll say call. Let's get Jim in here, then we
- 10:21will get back into it. Jim, how are you?
- 10:26Hey, pretty good guys. Got off the course before the
- 10:28rain hit. No, it's good.
- 10:30How you how'd you play? 7077.
- 10:34Show off you. Where did you?
- 10:36Where did you play at Jim? Toad Valley.
- 10:38Nice. Didn't get in the back 9 high
- 10:40with that 77. What's that?
- 10:42Didn't get that back. Night in with that 70.
- 10:44Seven, Yeah, I had four holes to go and then it started raining.
- 10:49I think the blueprint for the Pacers real quick, I think they
- 10:53like five guys guarded Brunson, maybe 6.
- 10:56I think they're just going to wear him out the whole series
- 10:58and the depth is going to show through.
- 11:00Then real quick, I think the Hawkeyes are missing Ben
- 11:04Wellness from that lead off spot because their offense has been
- 11:07buttering badly for the last two weekends.
- 11:09So to play this week either, so maybe if they can get get a
- 11:14break and get into the NCAA, which right now it's kind of a
- 11:17long shot to be honest, maybe he can come back then.
- 11:20But as Heller said yesterday, his quote was you got to respect
- 11:24the game. We're going to go out, we're
- 11:25going to play to win because that's what baseball is about.
- 11:27I appreciate that quote from him.
- 11:29I did. Jim, thanks for the call.
- 11:30Good to hear from you. You know what I was impressed
- 11:33with and you're going to have mail.
- 11:34You watch it way more than I do. Where's this Ober Miller Mueller
- 11:39bid all year long? Well, he's dead.
- 11:40He was unhittable. And he might be big.
- 11:42He'll probably finish second. Big 10 Pitcher of the year.
- 11:44He's been outstanding. So is was he drafted and didn't
- 11:48sign? Is he back into the draft?
- 11:49Yes. So he came back.
- 11:51He bet on himself for this year. 'Cause I saw he was the 16th
- 11:55round pick. And he's done enough, he's
- 11:58certainly. Holy mackerel, he did enough
- 12:00last night. And now the problem when you
- 12:02come back for your senior year is you don't have that same kind
- 12:05of incentive that you can use against teams, right?
- 12:08There's no leverage, yeah. That is completely out the
- 12:10window. That's a great point.
- 12:12But when you're looking at where he's going to be drafted, he has
- 12:14jumped up. He's going to be certainly in
- 12:16the top 10 rounds and top 5-6, something like that for a lefty
- 12:19that throws at that level last. Year 10 walked one.
- 12:23And it was the walks. It was him and Brett.
- 12:26Also, then that's a trouble with the strike.
- 12:28The new pitching coach, the new pitching coach has come in and
- 12:31has been absolutely out standard.
- 12:32You know, Beuter's a guy that was part of that bullpen that
- 12:34was so atrocious last year. He's been great.
- 12:37They they really got something here.
- 12:39Savory, who will probably start against UCLA and I guess the
- 12:43whole game. And when is that Saturday.
- 12:45That'll be Saturday night, the 6:00 game.
- 12:48He's probably one of the top five or six pitchers in the Big
- 12:5110. I mean, they they took their
- 12:53number three from last year. He's an ace, their number six
- 12:57from last year. He's one of the best twos in all
- 12:59of the Big 10. And their number 3 was a guy
- 13:01that couldn't get anybody out of the bullpen.
- 13:03And he's been one of the best number threes this year.
- 13:05The pitching staff is the reason that they're here, but he
- 13:08brought up a girl. A good point without will miss
- 13:10at the top of the lineup and the top lineup was good last night.
- 13:13Yeah, it just he is. And can he, will he play again?
- 13:17I don't know. I haven't heard anything to
- 13:18what. Year is he?
- 13:20I think he's that's good question.
- 13:23All those Johnston guys start to run together for me.
- 13:25I think he's in his last year. You called a lot of these.
- 13:28Games because hey, Evan Wristley's out there in center
- 13:30field and they got a couple out of the game.
- 13:32The team again this year, I think this is Willmus's last
- 13:34year at memory serves. But he's a tremendous base.
- 13:37He just he's a grinder. He's a Johnston baseball player.
- 13:39Has he got a pro career ahead of him?
- 13:41It's going to be tough. I mean, it really is.
- 13:43But Peyton Williams, he's hanging around in the minor
- 13:45leagues right now, I think. Is he in your Blue Jays
- 13:47organization? I think he might be big first
- 13:49baseman from the Dragons from years ago.
- 13:51It's tough though that and get into that next level, but now I
- 13:55want to see today so I was looking at all morning. 9:00
- 13:58tonight, 9:00. Tonight they move it up because
- 14:01of the weather. Iowa, Indiana, Iowa has nothing
- 14:04to play for. They're not getting in at large.
- 14:07Their RPI still today is 71. They're still O five and one
- 14:11against quad one. You're not getting in at large.
- 14:13Even if you win this one, Beat UCLA and losing the champ.
- 14:15No, you have to win it all tonight, Teller said.
- 14:20The right thing. He did.
- 14:20I applaud him. But he's not going to coach that
- 14:23way. No, I yeah, I would be
- 14:25surprised. You have to play for winning two
- 14:29games on the weekend, you have to beat UCLA and then whoever.
- 14:32Comes up. When is that game on the
- 14:33weekend? Do we know Saturday?
- 14:34What? 6:00 for the UCLA game and then.
- 14:38Big 10 Network has it. Yes, championship Sunday, 2:00.
- 14:42I want to say something like that.
- 14:43At least that's around the area that it's been.
- 14:45And we'll see who comes out of the top half.
- 14:47But Iowa, I see there's family line.
- 14:50I've been looking all morning long.
- 14:52I will. Plus 120 on the money line.
- 14:53Hoosiers -154 We'll talk more about that coming up at 1:50.
- 14:59I got a little opinion on that one.
- 15:00Circa Sports sponsors Transplay the day.
- 15:03Since we're on baseball, let's talk about the news that broke
- 15:07yesterday late in the day that ESPN, we know that they're
- 15:10giving up Sunday Night Baseball and some of their other baseball
- 15:14properties. NBC Sunday Night Baseball.
- 15:18Now wait a second, what about September?
- 15:21When September rolls around and Sunday Night Football on NBC,
- 15:25Chris and Al are the best on TV. No, AL's no longer there.
- 15:31They'll they will switch then to one of their other properties.
- 15:34Is that how I read that? Peacock for sure.
- 15:37Peacock. Yes, absolutely.
- 15:39So what is NBC's other property? Well.
- 15:43It's not like it's not like USA Network.
- 15:45Well, that's a part of their big umbrella, but it's a separate
- 15:48umbrella. So I was reading that because
- 15:50USA Network and whatever channels are a part of that.
- 15:54Also we're interested in some type of baseball package
- 15:56perhaps. And so that's talk.
- 15:58But this the NBC component that you're talking about that is
- 16:01separate from that. I would anticipate that when we
- 16:04get to September, it would be Peacock exclusive.
- 16:06Peacock exclusive. That'll be Sunday Night Football
- 16:09starts. Those Sunday night games will be
- 16:11Peacock. Yeah, our NBC, rather, is also
- 16:14interested in obtaining the first round of the playoffs,
- 16:16like ESP. So where would that be?
- 16:19Home Run Derby? The other one?
- 16:20Yep. So that would probably, well, I
- 16:22don't know what's on network TV in the summer.
- 16:25It's not reruns. Don't they have summers?
- 16:27I have no idea. Yeah, I don't watch TV.
- 16:30Other than, well, right. But but look it, I love Sunday
- 16:35night baseball. I find it relaxing at the end of
- 16:38the weekend before you go back to work, right?
- 16:40Just put a ball game on and just kind of sink back into your
- 16:43chair and enjoy whether you have a rooting interest or I won't
- 16:45have a betting interest. My partner probably would, but
- 16:48that's why I just like it and I'm so I'm glad it's not going
- 16:51away. Now there's also, there was a
- 16:54part of, I think it was Marshawn had this.
- 16:57That said, ESPN and Major League Baseball are continuing their
- 17:01talks that those talks have not completely dried up the amount
- 17:05of money, so ESPN opted out. Right.
- 17:07And what was it, 500? Seven, $100 million?
- 17:10I think it was 550. If memory serves, that was a,
- 17:13yeah. It's a big nut.
- 17:15But they said they willing to continue, but not at that price,
- 17:18right? They went down to about 200.
- 17:21Apparently that's the same type of price.
- 17:24NBC and ESPN are in the same vault, OK.
- 17:26They're very close to it. If you're Major League Baseball,
- 17:30what makes more sense? Network television with NBC, but
- 17:34a place that baseball has not broadcast for a long time.
- 17:38Because for ESPN, it's not just about that game, it's about the
- 17:42highlights. So would they lose?
- 17:45That it's about being a partner. Well, that's a separate entity
- 17:47too. And that's why NBC says we're
- 17:49not paying that 5:50 because we don't need those highlight
- 17:51packages. We don't need what ESPN pays for
- 17:54for those because they don't have Sports Center, you know,
- 17:57they don't have 24/7. NBC doesn't.
- 17:59Need it, right? NBC doesn't need it, while ESPN
- 18:01does. So that's a different separate
- 18:03component to it. For Major League Baseball,
- 18:05though, I still think it makes sense.
- 18:08You still want to be in bed with baseball and ESPN because you
- 18:12saw it with your beloved hockey. I'm just going to say, but
- 18:14here's a perfect example. The NHL out of sight, out of
- 18:17mind. They couldn't wait to, you know,
- 18:19get beg for forgiveness and get back over there.
- 18:23Look and look at. It's worked in a lot of ways I.
- 18:26Think not. This year, though, you see those
- 18:28numbers are down big. Are they down big?
- 18:30Like 28%, really, yeah. Year to year.
- 18:34No kidding. Yeah, now.
- 18:36Your Jets are one of the reasons.
- 18:38Well, there's 5 Canadian teams out of the 16 that made it and
- 18:40that's one of the reasons. Yeah, it's going over pretty
- 18:42well up there though, at least till Toronto got knocked out
- 18:47over the weekend. All right, good stuff NBC, Well
- 18:50done. At least it sounds like there's
- 18:51going to be a landing spot for ESP or for a Sunday Night
- 18:55Baseball, whether it stays on the four letter network or NBC
- 18:58is able to pick it up. So we find out yesterday, last
- 19:01night, that Iowa Hoops gets a commitment from the Ashton
- 19:05Williams kid. You look at the numbers, look,
- 19:08he played at Florida internationally, averaged 7
- 19:09points. He's a backup point guard.
- 19:11And with Bennett Sturtz. But it's 38 minutes.
- 19:15Right. You really don't need a backup.
- 19:17No, I think this is more a developmental thing.
- 19:19So what year is he? He'll be a sophomore, so still
- 19:23three years of eligibility. What I wonder though, still, is
- 19:27that he's a GIF, a kid. What's going on there with him?
- 19:30He's the high point transfer. Visited a month ago.
- 19:33Apparently he was on Seton Hall's campus this week, but it
- 19:35was the first visit that he took when he visited Iowa and a
- 19:38couple other places. Does it seem like Iowa was high
- 19:41on his list that he wanted? Or this guy.
- 19:43Remember Echo told us yesterday this was the guy in GIFA.
- 19:46He had two different people said he was ready to commit, but they
- 19:49never could agree to the financials and it's the
- 19:52financial component. I don't know if he's going to
- 19:54find a better destination than Iowa he's a gift for.
- 19:57Might he find more money? Seton Hall is not the place.
- 20:00Almost every single year. They're the lowest in terms of
- 20:03NIL the last couple of years in terms of Big East funding.
- 20:06Even worse than the DePaul is Seton Hall.
- 20:08And you may not know this what what's Seton Hall known for
- 20:11academically? I have no idea.
- 20:13Is is there is. There something, but there's
- 20:15nothing to leave. So it's not a doctor school or
- 20:18yeah, I have no idea. It's interesting that these guys
- 20:23that are still out there, these guys that have taken their
- 20:25visits that they're looking for that money and it's gone.
- 20:30It's just not there. And if you.
- 20:32Wait up in a lot of areas. And if you wait long enough,
- 20:35what does that also mean, right? I mean, is there going to be a
- 20:38spot for you? You're not going to get the
- 20:40minutes that you probably want because I think of a guy like
- 20:42Giza GIF. All right, nice player at high
- 20:44point. He led the team in scoring,
- 20:45averaged 14 points. Team that made the NCAA
- 20:48tournament, 5 assists. Good player, right?
- 20:50Well, the Iowa, is he a 15 minute a game guy?
- 20:55You look at the guys they brought in from Drake, you look
- 20:57at that backcourt, look at what they have and we know Bennett
- 21:00starts is not going to leave the floor.
- 21:02Where do those minutes come from here?
- 21:04He's not going to come in here. Command 750,000.
- 21:07Dollars. So is that the number you've
- 21:08heard that's been floating out there?
- 21:10He really wants that. Money I I told you the muddy
- 21:13thing drives me crazy because it's all lies a.
- 21:15Lot of times. Yes, it's 99, nine .9% of the
- 21:18time it's a lie. It's either coming from an agent
- 21:20or somebody that doesn't know. And, and is the lie usually that
- 21:23they embellish what they're getting or they're
- 21:25underestimated both ways? Both ways.
- 21:27That's why I think it's all garbage.
- 21:29Every single single thing I believe that you hear is
- 21:31probably wrong. That's that's where we've got to
- 21:34this point and it's gross. But it's also the reality for a
- 21:37guy like that doesn't make sense for McComb.
- 21:39Just say we're good. Let's just we got our guys, my
- 21:44team's on the floor. Or or or.
- 21:45If you're still looking for a spot in a couple of weeks, you
- 21:48know what we've got. Give us a call.
- 21:50If not, best of luck. But if he's looking for 30
- 21:52minutes a game, he's not going to get it.
- 21:53It's not happening to that. Not this year.
- 21:55Yeah, might happen at Seton Hall, but you have to take a lot
- 21:58less money. Oh boy, where it's gone, right,
- 22:03We're going to talk about where it's gone for Iowa State and
- 22:05their non conference schedule, which saw the light of day here
- 22:09this morning. You know what we we kill it
- 22:11every year, right? Seemingly, if it's not Fred
- 22:13McCaffrey, non con TJ picked up on it.
- 22:17And it's not that we don't understand why they're doing it.
- 22:20It's better for them. But we would argue the point
- 22:23that it's better to actually test yourself.
- 22:24Yes, Although Iowa State's case they've come back with proof is
- 22:29in the pudding that no, it's not because we're pretty good right
- 22:31out of the chute this past year. I mean, look what they did going
- 22:35out and taking and having the lead against Auburn coughing it
- 22:38up And did that game go overtime?
- 22:40It was a two point. I think it was 2 point but it
- 22:42was hell of a game as we know. Iowa State was up 18 at 1.18.
- 22:45Yeah, and then beat Colorado. With Colorado, everybody thought
- 22:48they were going to be good and they were just God awful.
- 22:51We'll take a time out before we do that.
- 22:52Time to give somebody here an opportunity to win $1000.
- 22:55You can head to KX and o.com. Yes, it is indeed time for the

- 23:32right now the keyword is grand. Bill Seals next.
- 23:34Miller and Condon underway into Thursday.
- 23:36It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 23:43I'm Mallory Congon, welcome back just past 1230 on a Thursday.
- 23:48Hour number two, Stephen Sipple will join us.
- 23:51Husker illustrated for Sipple, do some Big 10.
- 23:54We'll do some Husker stuff with Sipple coming up here at 1:00.
- 23:57Bill Bender on college football and sports from The Sporting
- 24:01News. He'll join us at about 1:30.
- 24:03Right now, Bill Seals is with us, cyclonereport.com.
- 24:06Bill, good to speak with you. I know that the tailgate tours
- 24:10are ongoing as we speak, but the non conference portion of the
- 24:16schedule, men's basketball, was released earlier this morning.
- 24:19Just get your thoughts on that. Well, yeah, a lot of the dates
- 24:23we already knew and and I think that the Purdue was obviously a
- 24:28great addition. They'll travel out to West
- 24:30Lafayette this season and then get them back at at home in in
- 24:352026. And also Mississippi State, a
- 24:38neutral site game, I think it's designed to kind of complement
- 24:44going down from a 20 game to an 18 game Big 12 schedule.
- 24:48And gosh, I think that's that's going to be a good thing for
- 24:52Iowa State too. And it just the way the non
- 24:56conference season looks, December 29th is the finale.
- 25:00They'll have Houston Christian and if I recall, I think a
- 25:04couple days later, they opened against Colorado in the Big 12
- 25:09season just this past year. So that leads me to believe
- 25:13they'll open conference seat season play a little bit later
- 25:17and then it, it's looking like there's going to be a bye bye
- 25:20week in their worked and kind of like what they used to have.
- 25:23So I think all, all things considered, it's a great, it's a
- 25:27great schedule all around that the Big 12's going to help them
- 25:30all. I should mention to the players
- 25:32era festival. They'll have three games out in
- 25:35Vegas as well. I'm I'm thinking about going out
- 25:37there. So I think it's going to be a
- 25:39tremendous field and and you want to talk about 3 games that
- 25:43will really boost Iowa State's resume in March.
- 25:46So that's going to be it out there at the end of November.
- 25:49One thing I noticed again this year, the buy games are not just
- 25:52buy games. They are the worst of the worst
- 25:55fairly Dickinson three O 6 scrambling 319.
- 25:57The high watermark out of the seven buy games is Houston
- 26:00Christian at 272. But until the net changes, Bill,
- 26:05this is the right way to do it. Play these awful teams because a
- 26:08buy games kind of a buy game in the grand scheme of things, beat
- 26:11them by 40. It's going to help your net
- 26:13rating. Yeah, I think they they have
- 26:16definitely adjusted accordingly. I think print on on that.
- 26:19And you know, Micah, Micah Byers, he's been on the staff
- 26:23for several years, goes back a few head coaches.
- 26:26He he knows what he's doing and then he and TJ are on the same
- 26:30page and and what they want to build out in a schedule.
- 26:32So I think great job on on Micah's behalf as well.
- 26:36He's kind of an unsung hero, a guy that doesn't get a whole lot
- 26:40of. Credit bought TJ Altelberger's
- 26:42house originally. I know that because it was right
- 26:44across the street from where I live.
- 26:46So, yeah, Byers, was he part of Hoiberg staff?
- 26:50I know he's with prom. I think he might have been.
- 26:54Yeah, I think he was, yeah. I think he was, he's been around
- 26:58a while a guy, yeah. Again, I don't think he gets a
- 27:00lot of credit. But with the the schedules that
- 27:04he's built, it seems like they, they, they take into
- 27:07consideration the team they've got coming back and they, they
- 27:12schedule out. I think they're they're really
- 27:14happy, happy with what guys they've got coming back.
- 27:17I think this is a top 15, top 20 type of team.
- 27:21We'll, we'll see how these transfers work.
- 27:23I think some freshmen are going to come in and contribute.
- 27:26So I think they scheduled accordingly here.
- 27:29They're going to they're going to get tested early and often
- 27:32and we'll see how how things shake out in the Big 12.
- 27:35But I I don't like this team's chances.
- 27:38I'm with you, so help me out. The exhibitions are going to go
- 27:41to Creighton. A week later, Northwestern will
- 27:43come to Ames and that is part of the ticket package.
- 27:46Does do these exhibitions now, Bill, do they do away with those
- 27:50top secret scrimmages that seemingly was all the rage there
- 27:55for a couple of for a couple of years?
- 27:56I mean that those got to be a thing of the past right now that
- 28:00they're playing exhibition games.
- 28:02I think the layout of that, the layout of the start of the
- 28:05season, it's pretty similar to what they've been playing Now.
- 28:10You, you replace the quote UN quote super secret scrimmage
- 28:14with a couple of just exhibition games.
- 28:17They were I think at like neutral sites.
- 28:20I believe both of them before these secret scrimmages kind of
- 28:23met at a halfway point, I think. But yeah, with Creighton,
- 28:28they'll go out to Omaha and then host Northwestern.
- 28:31I think that'll that'll flip the following year.
- 28:33So yeah, great opportunity too. And I mean, it adds, you
- 28:37mentioned Trent, like those the the Slappy games that they've
- 28:40got to boost the net. Well, you're adding a lot of
- 28:43value to I think season ticket packages as well.
- 28:47The Iowa game at home, that's big certainly.
- 28:50But included in that, now you get you get a game against
- 28:54Northwestern in your package and exhibition in this season and
- 28:57then you get to see Creighton in Ames next season.
- 29:00And that's even bigger when you've got to this team goes to
- 29:04Iowa City to play. With that, can't we just take
- 29:08these exhibition games and just make them real games?
- 29:11I mean, we've been begging for decades now to actually get back
- 29:15to real home in homes for college basketball.
- 29:18Why? Why the exhibition route?
- 29:19I understand we've seen it the last couple of years, but
- 29:22Arkansas played a big one. You see Kentucky do it a few
- 29:24times. Can't we just make these?
- 29:26Games Didn't McCollum take his team to Lubbock?
- 29:28This this. Yeah, can't we just make these
- 29:30regular season games? Drake Team.
- 29:33Well, yeah, I, I, I see what you're getting at Trent.
- 29:38I, I think that the timing of these October 17th, Creighton,
- 29:43the 26th of October, Northwestern and as we've seen
- 29:47out of these Iowa State teams, I don't think they're going to be
- 29:50clicking on all cylinders. It's still going to be a feeling
- 29:53out process. They've got all those transfers
- 29:56coming in the freshman. I'm not sure maybe they, they
- 30:00want these games to count though.
- 30:02I, I think it's exhibition and is going to be the key, the
- 30:06keyword there. They're going to try out all
- 30:08kinds of rotations. It's going to be a a feeling out
- 30:11process. They're going to get a lot of
- 30:13guys a lot of minutes. So I think maybe that that that
- 30:16in mind that they don't want these to maybe count towards an
- 30:20NCAA tournament resume or RPI net, all of that.
- 30:24Yeah, I, I think that's probably your spot.
- 30:26And there's going to be apparently these are going to be
- 30:28televised because. They were last year, yeah, last
- 30:30couple of years. Were they does the releases says
- 30:33that the television details to come so that's good and the fact
- 30:36that right in the middle of Thanksgiving weekend and and
- 30:39Trent you probably would know better than Bill Bill if you do
- 30:42know I I think Thanksgiving is a pretty good weekend to go to
- 30:45Vegas as far as room. Availability, absolutely, yeah.
- 30:48Right. I mean, they're, they're the
- 30:50the. That might be changing this
- 30:52year. Though it might be with this
- 30:53tournament going up. We have to see what kind of
- 30:55circa, circa sports package we can can work into that deal,
- 31:00right? Absolutely this.
- 31:03We'll put that on the list and that that that's a good one.
- 31:06All right, Bill, so that's that's the basketball.
- 31:08Let's get back to football. I know that it's about to
- 31:10ratchet up as far as your workload with all of these camps
- 31:15etcetera that are coming up. Tell us what's on your docket as
- 31:17far as prospective Cyclone football players.
- 31:22At least at one point, they're going to be making their way to
- 31:24Ames. Yeah.
- 31:26Well, First off, not to change the subject, but you know, First
- 31:30off is going to be a trip down to Kansas City tomorrow for that
- 31:33Nike EYBL. That'll be the most pressing get
- 31:36to watch for Iowa State prospects down there.
- 31:41That's going to be big. But as far as football goes,
- 31:44yeah, that will start to ratchet up.
- 31:47The official visits will start. They've got one booked in for
- 31:50that last weekend in May. Isaac Jensen, he's going to
- 31:55borderline 4 star type of guy. He's a high, real high three
- 31:59star on Rivals, about as high as you can go.
- 32:02And he'll be in that 30th through June 1st.
- 32:06But really, I, I think you look at June 6th through the 8th and
- 32:10the 13th through the 15th, That's when this coaching
- 32:13staff's going to try and make hay that that first big weekend,
- 32:17the 6th through the 8th, They've got a lot of committed guys.
- 32:20Typically what the, the approach has been in the past is try to
- 32:24get as many of those committed guys in on one weekend and then
- 32:28you bring in maybe 5 or 6 of your super high priority guys
- 32:32that weekend and, and hope maybe the time around the commits will
- 32:37get them to be a part of the fold.
- 32:38So that's, I think that's playing out again this season
- 32:42and or this year. And they'll bring in a pretty
- 32:45good crop of guys about 8:00 or 9:00 on the 13th through the
- 32:5015th altteenth. Also some some big guys.
- 32:53But yeah, it's, it's going to be a lot of camp coverage as well.
- 32:58Those start up. We've got the big man camp.
- 33:01The morning is Sunday, June 1st. They'll get that started.
- 33:04I'll be up there for that. And then they'll have like a
- 33:08Sunday Night Lights camp kind of thing that they'll run later
- 33:11that afternoon into the evening. So a lot of coverage coming up
- 33:15on the 1st and then they'll have have that coming Tuesday and
- 33:18Wednesday that week and then Tuesday, Wednesday the following
- 33:22week. So typically a lot of a lot of
- 33:24guys coming to Ames and Campbell really likes to recruit that 6
- 33:28hour radius. Well, you're going to see a lot
- 33:31of I think kids that are kind of in that well already have offers
- 33:35or they'll come in and, and extend offers to a lot of kids
- 33:39during that week and a half span.
- 33:41So lots to lots to come on on cyclonereport.com and during
- 33:47typically a slow time of the year with none of no teams
- 33:50playing, it's a lot of news. So something that subscribers
- 33:54can enjoy. Bill, with so many of those guys
- 33:56and kind of that big weekend being early in June, do you
- 33:59think that has something to do with the game over in Ireland
- 34:02just kind of their calendar pushing everything up?
- 34:05Yeah, moving up an extra week and getting it there and how
- 34:08different when we get to camp, how different is their camp
- 34:11going to look here this summer leading into that game?
- 34:13Well, yeah, I think that the weekends in June seem to be
- 34:17about the same. They've like to go the first two
- 34:21weekends and in June with that, I think Iowa spread spreads them
- 34:26out. I think the 20th even might be a
- 34:28big the 20th through the 22nd. You'll have to ask your Iowa
- 34:32guy. I think that's a big weekend for
- 34:34the Hawks that following week. So but yeah, they'll, they'll
- 34:38ramp things up by the report date I believe is June 12th, I
- 34:44want to say I heard. So they'll ramp, they'll ramp
- 34:47things up. And then media days a week
- 34:49earlier this year, it's going to be that last, that last Friday
- 34:54in the month of July. So really, yeah, from there you,
- 34:57you start with media day a week earlier.
- 34:59And I think from that point on it everything's about a week
- 35:03ahead of time with the trip over to Ireland.
- 35:06Fascinating stuff, Bill Seals, appreciate your contribution, as
- 35:10we always do. Bill, thank you for doing this
- 35:14summer camp for the basketball for the men start middle of
- 35:17June. Is that what I saw?
- 35:1815th or 16th? Yeah, TJ told us, I believe it
- 35:22was the 16th. Told us that at the the the
- 35:26tailgate tour stop on Monday. They'll report in on the 16th
- 35:31and then I believe summer workouts will start on the 18th.
- 35:34And we we all know what that involves.
- 35:37So it'll be a ramping up of, of of sorts for those freshmen
- 35:42coming in. It's it's going to be an
- 35:43adjustment, even the transfers to coming from where they were
- 35:46before to Iowa State. And I hope it entails time with
- 35:49the media because that was a yeah, they're good about that.
- 35:52Yeah, absolutely. I got to tip my cap to them for
- 35:55for last year and they dominated the cycle because no one else,
- 35:58no football program was talking. Maybe tell him, Will.
- 36:01But TJ, well done. TJ Otzelberger and your staff.
- 36:05Bill. Thank you, cyclonereport.com for
- 36:07Bill cyclonereport.com and we'll speak within next week.
- 36:10Thank you, Bill Seals. Appreciate it guys.
- 36:12Have a good one. Yep, good to talk to you.
- 36:14Bill Seals, we check in on Iowa State.
- 36:18If you could have have a free trip to go see the game, K
- 36:23State, Iowa State game, would you go?
- 36:25You would. I'm not a weirdo that sits in my
- 36:29basement. All the time.
- 36:29It's just such a long flight, isn't it?
- 36:31So I don't know if I could do. It it's a free trip.
- 36:34Yeah, I get it if. If you would have said, I don't
- 36:38even know what the price point would have been, but a free trip
- 36:40to Ireland. I'm Irish.
- 36:42Condon is an Irish name, yeah. Maybe visit some relatives.
- 36:45Absolutely, they're over there. The Condon's the I believe if my
- 36:484th grade, the background lesson is correct.
- 36:51The 1990 second most common is Condon.
- 36:56Yes, I would. Do you like Guinness?
- 36:59I don't. I like beer.
- 37:01I do too, and I'm I'm with you. I'd find some, not Guinness so.
- 37:06Black and tan, Have you ever had one of those?
- 37:08Gross. You don't like them?
- 37:09No. Doesn't do it.
- 37:11It was it was better than just the Guinness, although I like
- 37:14the I like to watch the Guinness when it's poured properly.
- 37:17That looks beautiful. Absolutely right.
- 37:18And then when it kind of comes to life and they take that
- 37:21little thing over the top of the glass and level it out.
- 37:26But black and tans are pretty good.
- 37:28I'm not pretty good. They're OK.
- 37:29They're OK. Stella's Really.
- 37:31Good. That's your favorite?
- 37:32That's my go to. Say #1.
- 37:34No, it's all that's my only. One that's the only.
- 37:35One, when I get to Circa, I walk across the street to get a beer
- 37:38to bring back the Circa because there's no more Stella in Circa
- 37:42with except the berries on tap. Yeah, bottle's garbage.
- 37:46Bottle still is just it's. What a terrible Take a bottle,
- 37:49pour it into a. Glass.
- 37:51It's it's, it's the stuff that's in the bottle.
- 37:53It's not good. It tastes like skunk.
- 37:55It's not good. Well then maybe you have a
- 37:57problem with your beer if it's that.
- 37:58No, no, no. If the difference between the
- 38:00two is that bad. Oh, it's it's night and day.
- 38:02Out of the tap is best. Out of the can is an inch
- 38:05behind, but out of the bottle, No way.
- 38:07Not that I wouldn't. No, I'll pass.
- 38:09I'd rather go without you. Can give me a Coors Light
- 38:11anyway? You're into that, I know you
- 38:13are, but you're not into the Guinness.
- 38:15I'm a simple man. Yeah, we'll take your time out.
- 38:17We'll come back and finish the hour.
- 38:20Hour number two. We're going to head to you folks
- 38:22listening in the western part of the state over in Sioux City.
- 38:25And I met somebody, I forgot to tell you, it's the track that
- 38:27listens to the station on the Is it 6/6?
- 38:31Something out in Sioux City, 6/26/20 I listen to that one.
- 38:35I'm up that way, including I think this weekend might be
- 38:37making a trip. I thought that was pretty cool
- 38:40that, you know, listening to me, it doesn't do anything for the
- 38:43audience, but for you and I. Maybe I should have told you off
- 38:45there. Miller and Con did.
- 38:46Back to wrap up hour number one, it's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 38:49Network. Hi, Miller Condon, welcome back.
- 38:55Iowa Sports Radio Network with you here until 2O clock.
- 38:59So yesterday NFL lost an owner and by all accounts, I mean, Jim
- 39:03Erce had his demons clearly, but very philanthropic and did a lot
- 39:08for the community of Indianapolis.
- 39:11And boy, everybody that played for him, it's hard to find
- 39:14someone, you know, that has that, that did not enjoy.
- 39:18I mean, you're gonna get caught. That's part of it, right?
- 39:21But by all accounts, Jim Ercey battled his demons, grant them
- 39:25that, but and fought him hard. But listening to people that
- 39:30were close to him, this is a big loss to them.
- 39:33Led his life to the fullest. Yeah, 65 years and got a lot out
- 39:37of it. But you're exactly right.
- 39:38And that was something that was kind of my take away going
- 39:41through and just all the positivity that came and not
- 39:43just what he was as an owner and a guy with a lot of money, but
- 39:46giving back and building up his community, which I think is
- 39:49always an important thing. Yeah, no doubt.
- 39:51Did he did get a Super Bowl? Obviously.
- 39:54That's my bears. Against your bears, but 65 years
- 39:57old apparently died in his sleep yesterday afternoon.
- 40:00You never know. Hour 2 is coming up.
- 40:03Stephen M Simple kicks it off having spoken with Simp in
- 40:06months, so we'll do that. And then we're going to talk to
- 40:08Bill Banner, more college sports, we'll mix in a little
- 40:11and the NBA as well with Bill Trans plays of the day, circus
- 40:15sports sponsor those. Miller and Condon, you're
- 40:18listening to the Eye with Sports Radio Network.
