Latest / Foul Territory / Ken Rosenthal’s BIG report on what really happened (& what didn’t) at the Trade Deadline + Winners/Losers
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: We're back with the Inside Scoop. This is one of
- 0:07Speaker 1: my favorite segments of the year. Get ready for this
- 0:09Speaker 1: fifteen minutes where Ken just pulled out his or wrote
- 0:13Speaker 1: his and released his article on trades that happens, things
- 0:16Speaker 1: that didn't happen, and you know all the conversations during
- 0:19Speaker 1: the deadline. So Ken, let's start with Trek Scoogle. Teams
- 0:23Speaker 1: that were interested the River Ryan factor. Can you get
- 0:26Speaker 1: into that portion of what happened here over the last week.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Well, it's interesting. At one point I reported that teams
- 0:33Speaker 2: were saying that the Tiger's preference was to have a
- 0:36Speaker 2: controllable starter. Now, the Tigers never responded to me during
- 0:39Speaker 2: that time and never said whether that was true, but
- 0:41Speaker 2: I was hearing it from the clubs. So ultimately that's
- 0:45Speaker 2: what they did. They got a controllable starter, River Ryan,
- 0:48Speaker 2: as well as a great outfield prospects, your Hope and
- 0:51Speaker 2: Brady Smith another picture. And while they weren't hell bent
- 0:55Speaker 2: on getting a picture in this deal, certainly they wanted
- 0:58Speaker 2: to balance out their position prospects with more pitching prospects.
- 1:03Speaker 2: They were deep in position player prospects, not so deep
- 1:06Speaker 2: on the pitching side. Their number one pick this year
- 1:09Speaker 2: was a pitcher as well. So they feel that with
- 1:12Speaker 2: this trade with getting Ryan and Smith and then the
- 1:14Speaker 2: two pitchers from mys as well in addition to Cameron
- 1:17Speaker 2: Fluki the number one pick, that they've kind of brought
- 1:20Speaker 2: their prospect level on the pitching side up to what
- 1:24Speaker 2: it is on the position player side. So in that sense, yes,
- 1:28Speaker 2: pitching wasn't necessarily required, but it was something that kind
- 1:32Speaker 2: of helped along. I would say for the Dodgers.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Let's focus on the Brewers for a moment. That's been
- 1:37Speaker 1: a lot of heat with even our show, back and
- 1:39Speaker 1: forth with their fans. So why wasn't their package good enough?
- 1:43Speaker 1: Why didn't they want infield pop? And this one actually
- 1:47Speaker 1: stood out to me too. Out of everyone out there
- 1:49Speaker 1: besides Schooble, they liked either Kevin Gossman or Dustin may So.
- 1:52Speaker 1: They didn't like Jose Soriano, they didn't like Robbie Ray.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I'm curious where their thought process was and if it
- 1:59Speaker 1: feels like it's going to.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Be enough, Well, they were in there for school, there's
- 2:02Speaker 2: no question about it. And as I reported, they offered
- 2:05Speaker 2: a number of different scenarios to the Tigers, some of
- 2:08Speaker 2: which involve pitching. Apparently none of them involve Logan Henderson,
- 2:12Speaker 2: but you can understand why they don't want to trade
- 2:14Speaker 2: Logan Henderson. My understanding is that Luis Penner, their great
- 2:19Speaker 2: infield prospect, was part of their offers, or at least
- 2:22Speaker 2: some of them, and they had a number of combinations,
- 2:25Speaker 2: so they weren't just there for show. They made serious
- 2:29Speaker 2: offers and it just turned out that the Dodgers' offers
- 2:32Speaker 2: were preferable to the Tigers. Did the Tigers or I'm sorry,
- 2:36Speaker 2: did the Brewers simply not go far enough? Yes, you
- 2:38Speaker 2: can say that, and they would argue, hey, we can
- 2:41Speaker 2: only go to a certain extent because we're not the Dodgers.
- 2:44Speaker 2: We don't have the financial resources of the Dodgers, can't
- 2:47Speaker 2: sign free agents, and we can't miss on young players
- 2:51Speaker 2: or keep trading young players because there are lifeblood. My
- 2:55Speaker 2: counter to that would be that right now, especially with
- 2:58Speaker 2: left side infielders, Brewers are so stacked that they could
- 3:02Speaker 2: do it, and obviously they were willing to do it
- 3:04Speaker 2: because Peena was part of some of the packages. Then
- 3:07Speaker 2: they would have had to have added pitching, and yes,
- 3:09Speaker 2: pitching is a more precious commodity. We all understand that,
- 3:12Speaker 2: but in this particular case, when you have it won
- 3:16Speaker 2: the World Series ever, when you have this amazing system
- 3:20Speaker 2: and when you have a real chance here to knock
- 3:22Speaker 2: off the Dodgers, I felt that this was the year
- 3:26Speaker 2: to do it. A lot of us did that said
- 3:28Speaker 2: what they did, Dustin May and Jojo Romero who is
- 3:32Speaker 2: recovering from an appendectomy from the Cardinals, Antonio Sanzetela from
- 3:36Speaker 2: the Rockies. That deepens an already really good staff. And
- 3:42Speaker 2: I'm not saying that Dustin May is Schoobul He's not,
- 3:45Speaker 2: but he's pretty good at his best, and last night
- 3:48Speaker 2: he was really good in his first start for the Brewers.
- 3:51Speaker 2: So no one should say that the Brewers cannot do this.
- 3:55Speaker 2: They can do this, but with Schooble it would have
- 3:57Speaker 2: looked a little bit better.
- 3:59Speaker 1: And you can, I get it long term. You can't
- 4:02Speaker 1: do this every year where you're like, hey, we're going
- 4:03Speaker 1: to do something really painful, but just to do a
- 4:06Speaker 1: quick exercise right now, I think anybody would take the
- 4:09Speaker 1: entire Brewers organization over the Mets organization, major league, minor league,
- 4:13Speaker 1: the whole thing, right, So can you do that for
- 4:15Speaker 1: one time? One trade and it's okay, I think so,
- 4:19Speaker 1: And yes, maybe it's not Logan Anderson, but were there
- 4:22Speaker 1: other packages there, even if it had to be a
- 4:24Speaker 1: five player prospect package. I think that's the part that's
- 4:27Speaker 1: hard to swallow.
- 4:27Speaker 2: And I'm with you, Scott, and I wrote this in
- 4:30Speaker 2: that notes Calm today. Teams treat these guys, the prospects,
- 4:34Speaker 2: like every one of them is going to be a star.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Guess what, every one of them is not going to
- 4:39Speaker 2: be a star. And even if they go on to stardom.
- 4:41Speaker 2: And Britgioli made this point in her column yesterday. One
- 4:45Speaker 2: of the worst deadline trades in recent years by the
- 4:47Speaker 2: Rays Joe Ryan for Nelson Cruz. Okay, losing Joe Ryan hurt.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Joe Ryan became a two time All Star. Guess what
- 4:56Speaker 2: The Rays made the playoffs to two years after that.
- 4:58Speaker 2: So at some point there is a time when, yes,
- 5:04Speaker 2: this kind of thing might make sense. Now we can
- 5:06Speaker 2: debate it. And maybe the Brewers felt that they just
- 5:09Speaker 2: couldn't go to the whatever level that they need to
- 5:11Speaker 2: go to. Okay, we get it. But to say it
- 5:15Speaker 2: could not have happened, no, that's not the case. They
- 5:18Speaker 2: could have afforded it financially. I reported that before the deadline,
- 5:21Speaker 2: and they could have done this. But at the same time, yes,
- 5:25Speaker 2: the Dodgers did possess certain advantages here I wrote about
- 5:27Speaker 2: them as well, there's no doubt about that.
- 5:31Speaker 3: How about the Atlanta Braves talking about them, they seem
- 5:35Speaker 3: like the only one for two guys in school and
- 5:37Speaker 3: de gram is there reasoning for that? Because you think
- 5:41Speaker 3: about they need some starters. I mean you got Chris Sale,
- 5:44Speaker 3: of course, but talk to me about like if they
- 5:47Speaker 3: go in the playoffs, which they will, who's game two,
- 5:49Speaker 3: Who's Game three?
- 5:50Speaker 2: Like? Who?
- 5:51Speaker 3: Why only just those two guys?
- 5:53Speaker 2: Well TDD this was one of the big stories at
- 5:55Speaker 2: the deadline. Why didn't the Braves do more? And to
- 5:58Speaker 2: answer your last question, right now, Bryce Elder probably would
- 6:01Speaker 2: be their number two. He was great early, had a
- 6:03Speaker 2: little bit of a lull, and now he's been really
- 6:05Speaker 2: good again. So there's your answer. But yes, we all
- 6:10Speaker 2: expected them to go for a playoff caliber starter because
- 6:14Speaker 2: they've been talking about doing this since last November and
- 6:17Speaker 2: they still have been done it now. I crushed him
- 6:20Speaker 2: in spring training for that. I said they were playing
- 6:23Speaker 2: with fire basically, and right now they're sitting with the
- 6:26Speaker 2: second best record in the National League and the third
- 6:28Speaker 2: best rotation he array, so what did I know? The question, though, becomes, yes,
- 6:34Speaker 2: the playoffs and will they have enough dominance to succeed,
- 6:38Speaker 2: because that is what happens in the postseason. You generally
- 6:41Speaker 2: need dominance starting pitching, not always, but generally. So I
- 6:46Speaker 2: don't know if they'll pull this off or not with
- 6:48Speaker 2: the current group. They've got Smith, Shovor coming back. They've
- 6:52Speaker 2: got the hope of schwellenback coming back. But at the
- 6:54Speaker 2: same time, it just would have been nice to have
- 6:57Speaker 2: had one more. Now. Their point on to and Schoolble
- 7:01Speaker 2: was we want impact. We're not gonna play on these
- 7:05Speaker 2: lesser guys, although they were in on storryatam. We're not
- 7:07Speaker 2: gonna give up a ton for lesser guys who we
- 7:10Speaker 2: think are not much better than what we have. Again
- 7:13Speaker 2: the debatable point, and we'll see how it all plays out.
- 7:17Speaker 4: Kim, We're gonna head out west to the Padres now
- 7:20Speaker 4: with aj Preller, it kind of seemed like a unique
- 7:22Speaker 4: deadline for him. Didn't make the splashy move, got a
- 7:25Speaker 4: couple of arms, but do you think he was really
- 7:27Speaker 4: shopping to build the big bullpen arms that they had
- 7:29Speaker 4: or was it just kind of at the end of
- 7:30Speaker 4: the day they felt like that was a strength and
- 7:32Speaker 4: didn't want to move off of it.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Well, Brad, good talking to you first of all, and
- 7:36Speaker 2: I will quote what executives always tell me. We're not shopping,
- 7:41Speaker 2: we're just listening. Of course, it's semantics. They weren't necessarily
- 7:46Speaker 2: shopping Mason Miller and Adrian morejone, but they were listening,
- 7:49Speaker 2: and they listened right to the end because Aj Preller,
- 7:52Speaker 2: like most heads of baseball operations, is always playing all
- 7:57Speaker 2: sides of all coins, and in this case, he ultimately decided,
- 8:02Speaker 2: like all teams do with players at this caliber, if
- 8:05Speaker 2: we hit a certain bar, if the offer is at
- 8:07Speaker 2: a certain level, we'll do it. Never got there, and
- 8:11Speaker 2: ultimately what he wanted to do was supplement his rotation,
- 8:13Speaker 2: which badly needed supplementation, and he acquired Robbie Ray, He
- 8:18Speaker 2: acquired Casey Mice, gave up decent prospects for both, but
- 8:22Speaker 2: of course that has been his mo for the past
- 8:25Speaker 2: several deadlines. The difference here, actually there were two differences. One,
- 8:29Speaker 2: he's in kind of a funny place with the team
- 8:33Speaker 2: changing hands. The ownership sale is not yet complete, and two,
- 8:37Speaker 2: he in the past when he's made his big deals
- 8:41Speaker 2: has generally not gone for rentals. Hanner Scott was an exception.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Most of the other ones were for players with the
- 8:48Speaker 2: years of control from Snell to Hater to Juan Soto
- 8:50Speaker 2: right down the line. Mason Miller was years of control.
- 8:54Speaker 2: In this case. He felt, Yeah, we've got a team
- 8:57Speaker 2: that is capable and they've got hopefully must grow up
- 9:00Speaker 2: in Paveda coming back. If all that happens and Paveda,
- 9:03Speaker 2: of course had the setback, then maybe the Padres or
- 9:07Speaker 2: something in the postseason, we'll see.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Let's let's stick out West. I mean the Padres, they
- 9:13Speaker 3: seem to always be in the mixture. You know, they
- 9:15Speaker 3: can't get over that hurdle with those Dodgers. Man, it's
- 9:17Speaker 3: absolutely incredible. But I want to talk about the Mariners
- 9:20Speaker 3: a little bit. It seemed like they were trying to
- 9:23Speaker 3: shop some guys, maybe George Kirby, Emerson Hancock. There was
- 9:28Speaker 3: ties to Zach neetto talk a little bit about them
- 9:30Speaker 3: and what they were kind of up to in this
- 9:33Speaker 3: whole trade deadline.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Well, they were looking for a bat and they got one,
- 9:38Speaker 2: Taylor Ward. They also acquired Sir Anthony Dominguez in the
- 9:41Speaker 2: Castillo trade, which was the late inning reliever that they wanted.
- 9:45Speaker 2: I don't know that that was as good as they
- 9:46Speaker 2: could have gotten or what they aspired to, but they
- 9:50Speaker 2: did inquire on zach Netto because if you look at
- 9:53Speaker 2: their roster after this season, Rosarina is a free agent,
- 9:57Speaker 2: so that would mean a hole in left field, and
- 10:00Speaker 2: JP Crawford is a free agent, which means a hole
- 10:03Speaker 2: on the left side of the enfield. Colet Emerson can
- 10:05Speaker 2: play either position. So yes, they were interested in Netto.
- 10:08Speaker 2: They were interested in all the short stops, but at
- 10:10Speaker 2: the same time, the prices for those guys were really high.
- 10:13Speaker 2: None of them moved, not Auto Lopez, not zach Netto,
- 10:16Speaker 2: not c J. Abrams. So the Mariners will be shopping
- 10:20Speaker 2: in the off season. And while they didn't trade Kirby
- 10:23Speaker 2: or Hancock, they can always revisit that in the off season,
- 10:27Speaker 2: and maybe that is when they feel will be the
- 10:30Speaker 2: better time to look at this and say, Okay, if
- 10:32Speaker 2: we can use one of those guys to get us,
- 10:35Speaker 2: maybe the left fielder, maybe the left side infielder, that's
- 10:38Speaker 2: what they'll do.
- 10:40Speaker 4: So kind of circling back to school ball, in the
- 10:42Speaker 4: trade with the Tigers. You kind of you wrote in
- 10:44Speaker 4: an article how they still feel like they can compete
- 10:46Speaker 4: even though they got rid of Myze and Schooble. What
- 10:48Speaker 4: was their thinking behind that if they like the guys
- 10:50Speaker 4: in the minors, so they just feel like they had
- 10:51Speaker 4: major league pieces that can replace them and still compete.
- 10:55Speaker 2: They like that Jackson job is coming back in the
- 10:57Speaker 2: next series against San Francisco. He is recovering from Tommy
- 11:01Speaker 2: John surgery. One of the best prospects in the sport
- 11:03Speaker 2: when he was coming up. They like that Drew Anderson
- 11:06Speaker 2: is now going to be in their rotation. They feel
- 11:08Speaker 2: he is a starter. They signed it to be a starter.
- 11:11Speaker 2: He just ended up in the bullpen to start the
- 11:13Speaker 2: year and he is under control for next year. So
- 11:16Speaker 2: both these guys can be part of their rotation. And
- 11:19Speaker 2: they feel obviously, while there's a drop off from schoobl
- 11:22Speaker 2: in miz maybe the drop off is not all that significant.
- 11:26Speaker 2: And then the Tigers, they're run differential since June first
- 11:31Speaker 2: is the best in the majors right now, it's the
- 11:34Speaker 2: second best in the American League, which I find astonishing,
- 11:37Speaker 2: but that's where they are, and run differential isn't everything. Obviously,
- 11:41Speaker 2: when you win eleven nothing like they did last night,
- 11:43Speaker 2: it gets juiced up, but it generally is an indication
- 11:47Speaker 2: of the underlying quality of your team. And the Tigers
- 11:51Speaker 2: still feel that they have a lot of quality and
- 11:54Speaker 2: more to come, obviously with these trades and all the
- 11:56Speaker 2: things that they've done. So given what they did a
- 11:59Speaker 2: couple years ago, and given the talent on that roster,
- 12:03Speaker 2: I can't rule them out.
- 12:06Speaker 3: A lot of executives talk about this trade deadline, thinking
- 12:09Speaker 3: it's not at the perfect time. Seems like they're talking
- 12:13Speaker 3: about wanting to get it in mid August. Talk a
- 12:16Speaker 3: little bit about that, and you know what, why would
- 12:19Speaker 3: they want it in mid August? What's the you know,
- 12:21Speaker 3: the good and bad of all of that situation.
- 12:25Speaker 2: The thinking todd is that if you move it to
- 12:27Speaker 2: mid August, you'd have more separation, more teams that have
- 12:30Speaker 2: a clearer idea of their direction. And that's probably true,
- 12:34Speaker 2: right If you wait another two weeks, some of these teams,
- 12:37Speaker 2: maybe the Pirates, for instance, would be further back and
- 12:40Speaker 2: would decide to sell. Who knows. I can see the
- 12:44Speaker 2: logic of that, But my problem with that, or at
- 12:47Speaker 2: least the counter argument to that is, if you move
- 12:50Speaker 2: it to August fifteenth, you're only getting a player, a
- 12:53Speaker 2: rental player for instance, for six weeks. Therefore, the impact
- 12:57Speaker 2: is lower, the return is less, and I just don't
- 13:01Speaker 2: know if it would be worth it in the end.
- 13:05Speaker 2: This is me speaking now. The executives, a couple of
- 13:07Speaker 2: them want this, maybe more than a couple. I haven't
- 13:09Speaker 2: pulled off thirty. I just like it in late July
- 13:13Speaker 2: because it leaves two months for that player to impact
- 13:17Speaker 2: your team, and that's a long time, and it makes
- 13:20Speaker 2: the prices higher for those players, and it just in
- 13:23Speaker 2: my view, makes the deadline more meaningful. Now. The counter
- 13:26Speaker 2: to that is when we had the August waiver period
- 13:30Speaker 2: and there were still some big things that happened, most
- 13:32Speaker 2: notably twenty seventeen, Justin Verlander traded on the last day
- 13:36Speaker 2: of August. That certainly was an impactful move. And one
- 13:40Speaker 2: thing here, because we no longer have the August waiver
- 13:42Speaker 2: period and teams can no longer make moves of a
- 13:45Speaker 2: significant nature after July thirty first, or August third, whatever
- 13:49Speaker 2: the deadline is, then maybe there's a middle ground. And
- 13:52Speaker 2: that's another argument for pushing the deadline back, because we
- 13:56Speaker 2: have no August period. Let's put it in mid August
- 13:58Speaker 2: and kind of split the difference.
- 14:01Speaker 1: One quick note on that too. I actually miss it
- 14:03Speaker 1: a lot, ken because it would have put us in
- 14:05Speaker 1: a place where these bigger contracts can move, Like that's
- 14:08Speaker 1: a place where I've been, you know, to or talking
- 14:11Speaker 1: about say Willia Thomas, right, wasn't much much interest. If
- 14:15Speaker 1: he's the only guy available and they'll need some money,
- 14:17Speaker 1: maybe he's traded at that August deadline, and among others, right,
- 14:20Speaker 1: maybe they have time to talk to Gram into moving NIBALLDI,
- 14:23Speaker 1: you know, stuff like that. I liked that part. It
- 14:25Speaker 1: had to be big names sometimes because it has to
- 14:27Speaker 1: go through the waiver system, but we don't have that anymore.
- 14:31Speaker 2: It's true. And from a reporting standpoint, I hated it
- 14:34Speaker 2: because it's a confidential process, or was a confidential process,
- 14:38Speaker 2: so you never knew who was on waivers and you
- 14:39Speaker 2: had to find hopefully people who would tell you, and
- 14:42Speaker 2: it was kind of annoying. But there was action, And
- 14:45Speaker 2: I remember every year when this was in effect prior
- 14:49Speaker 2: to twenty nineteen, a story that would be written by
- 14:52Speaker 2: a lot of people after July thirty first was who
- 14:55Speaker 2: are the candidates to go in August and Scott. They
- 14:57Speaker 2: were often the people, the players that you met, the
- 15:00Speaker 2: guys with huge contracts who would pass through waivers without
- 15:04Speaker 2: getting claimed and then maybe you can work out something.
- 15:07Speaker 1: So I did want to just follow up to our
- 15:09Speaker 1: conversation with Ken Rosenthal. There was one other part of
- 15:13Speaker 1: his notes column that we didn't get to that Brad,
- 15:16Speaker 1: you should have some insight for us on and it
- 15:18Speaker 1: was in relation to Tyler Wells getting picked up by
- 15:21Speaker 1: the Rays. Ken wrote about how the race picked up
- 15:23Speaker 1: Freddie Pulta and Liam Hicks, but to not underrate what
- 15:27Speaker 1: Tyler can do. Brandon Hyde works for the Race and
- 15:29Speaker 1: apparently gave a huge recommendation for Tyler Wells to be
- 15:32Speaker 1: added to the mix. He said, versatile success, different roles,
- 15:36Speaker 1: extremely competitive, great teammate, the whole thing. So what have
- 15:39Speaker 1: you seen from him during his Orioles days that you
- 15:41Speaker 1: think will work here?
- 15:43Speaker 4: Yeah, he's kind of a guy that can pitch in
- 15:45Speaker 4: any situation. Really, he's been a start before, he's gone
- 15:48Speaker 4: long relief, he's pitched multiple innings in high leverage and
- 15:51Speaker 4: to me, he's just got big A Hony says, no
- 15:53Speaker 4: other way to say He's just a big guy out
- 15:55Speaker 4: there and his stuff is not going to light up
- 15:57Speaker 4: the radar gun. He's not going to be throwing ninety
- 15:59Speaker 4: seven to ninety eight some of the closers. But at
- 16:01Speaker 4: the end of the day, he gets the job done,
- 16:02Speaker 4: lives at the top of the zone with a lot
- 16:04Speaker 4: of his stuff, really really good change up from there,
- 16:07Speaker 4: but at the end of the he just gets out
- 16:09Speaker 4: and he's not afraid to pitch in any role. He's
- 16:12Speaker 4: extremely humble for a guy that has had a lot
- 16:14Speaker 4: of success, and I think he's gonna be a big,
- 16:16Speaker 4: big pickup for them in this trade deadline. Very underrated
- 16:21Speaker 4: pickup for the Rays in this deadline.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Yeah, not the most well known name, although a veteran,
- 16:26Speaker 1: he's been around for a minute and he knows the
- 16:29Speaker 1: division super well. I mean, he's been with the Orioles here,
- 16:31Speaker 1: so he moves on to the race.
- 16:33Speaker 2: You know what else?
- 16:33Speaker 1: I just thought of, Todd Father. I mean, we talked
- 16:35Speaker 1: about it the other day, but you weren't on. There
- 16:37Speaker 1: were so many trades within divisions, so many trades with
- 16:40Speaker 1: the divisions right. The gms don't care anymore, and some
- 16:44Speaker 1: owners care some, but I think less and less of
- 16:47Speaker 1: them care if a player goes to another division because
- 16:50Speaker 1: also the owners get talked into about prospects, so they're like, hey,
- 16:53Speaker 1: we're gonna snag their number five prospects, right, So it
- 16:57Speaker 1: used to be more of am not even the Red Sox,
- 17:01Speaker 1: my one to one catcher or Atley Richman. Now it's
- 17:04Speaker 1: like a hey, go for it. Yeah, I put in
- 17:06Speaker 1: quotes the prospect. It's numbers.
- 17:09Speaker 3: It's like worrying about getting wins at eight, nine, ten, eleven,
- 17:13Speaker 3: twelve years old in travel baseball, it doesn't really matter
- 17:17Speaker 3: that much. But back to the race. Whenever they get
- 17:20Speaker 3: a picture, it always seems like that guy is like, wow,
- 17:22Speaker 3: guy just reinvented himself and he's come dominant. So any
- 17:25Speaker 3: picture that goes to Tampa should be ecstatic. But yes,
- 17:29Speaker 3: within the division, it's absolutely phenomenal how that goes, and
- 17:34Speaker 3: they don't care anymore. So what says you about your team?
- 17:37Speaker 3: We don't know. Another man's treasure is another man's treasure,
- 17:40Speaker 3: you know.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Well, go everyone to the Monday edition of Fair Territory,
- 17:46Speaker 2: the post deadline edition. No more trades or action, No
- 17:51Speaker 2: more tweets from me saying Griffin Foster when I should
- 17:56Speaker 2: have said Foster Griffin, No more tweets from me saying
- 18:00Speaker 2: Hicks has been traded from the Rays to the Rays
- 18:02Speaker 2: when he was traded from the Marlins to the Rays. Hey,
- 18:05Speaker 2: these things happen. There were over forty trades yesterday by
- 18:09Speaker 2: my unofficial count. Actually Jason Stark of the Athletic keeps
- 18:12Speaker 2: track of that for us, And when I counted up
- 18:15Speaker 2: the number of trades he listed this morning, it was
- 18:17Speaker 2: over forty. I believe that would be a record. Some
- 18:20Speaker 2: of course, were more important than others. But we got
- 18:23Speaker 2: a lot to talk about this morning, and I'm going
- 18:26Speaker 2: to do something that I don't normally like doing, but
- 18:30Speaker 2: everybody does after the trade deadline, and it's the winners
- 18:33Speaker 2: and losers segment. Now one day after the deadline, it's
- 18:37Speaker 2: impossible to assess who won, who lost, how this is
- 18:42Speaker 2: all going to turn out. That's the beauty of baseball.
- 18:44Speaker 2: We don't know how it's going to turn out. And
- 18:48Speaker 2: the reason I resist often doing this is because it's
- 18:51Speaker 2: too snap a judgment, too quick, and it's like the
- 18:54Speaker 2: mock trades that you see, the lists of candidates to
- 18:57Speaker 2: be traded you see before the trade deadline. Tell me
- 19:00Speaker 2: how many of those turn out to be right, and
- 19:02Speaker 2: I'll tell you another story. Well, a lot of what
- 19:05Speaker 2: I'm going to say here might turn out to be
- 19:07Speaker 2: wrong as well, But I'm going to give you my
- 19:10Speaker 2: assessment of what went down. I've got some winners, I've
- 19:14Speaker 2: got some losers. I'm not gonna get to all thirty teams.
- 19:16Speaker 2: If I missed your team, I am sorry. But let's
- 19:19Speaker 2: talk a little bit about what went down at the deadline.
- 19:22Speaker 2: All right, we'll start with the winners. Number one obvious
- 19:25Speaker 2: Dodgers Schooble. We're not going to even go there. We've
- 19:28Speaker 2: talked enough about that number two, and these aren't really
- 19:32Speaker 2: ranked in any particular orders. I'm not gonna list numbers.
- 19:34Speaker 2: I just said that number two is the Cubs, and
- 19:38Speaker 2: I loved what the Cubs did. They got Kevin Gosman
- 19:40Speaker 2: and Clay Holmes for their rotation, a rotation that has
- 19:42Speaker 2: been battered by injuries. Gossmin a down year by his standards.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Peripherals are good, though, and certainly he's a guy who's
- 19:49Speaker 2: been there, one of the great veterans in the game.
- 19:52Speaker 2: The same can be said for Clay Holmes. Coming off
- 19:55Speaker 2: the fractored fibula always some question there, but they got
- 19:59Speaker 2: two stuff starters. They got Ryan Zephyr John, a reliever
- 20:03Speaker 2: that probably not a lot of casual fans have heard of,
- 20:06Speaker 2: but look at his strikeout rates, it's incredible. He should
- 20:09Speaker 2: help their bullpen quite a bit. Also got in the
- 20:13Speaker 2: trade with Holmes Tyrone Taylor from the Mets, and outfielder
- 20:17Speaker 2: who should fit in well. They gave up their well
- 20:19Speaker 2: one of their top prospects, Jefferson Rojas, in that deal.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Maybe he becomes for the Mets what Peter crow Armstrong
- 20:25Speaker 2: became for the Cubs. But the Cubs have reinforced a
- 20:28Speaker 2: roster that was already really good but short on the
- 20:31Speaker 2: pitching side. Good for them. The San Diego Padres here's
- 20:36Speaker 2: a team that played poorly really for most of the
- 20:39Speaker 2: first half, only got hot lately and again some weaker competition.
- 20:44Speaker 2: But the Padres added two pitchers to rental pitchers, Robbie
- 20:50Speaker 2: Ray and Casey Maize, at a time when we are
- 20:54Speaker 2: saying again they have no farm system, at a time
- 20:56Speaker 2: when they seemingly were in somewhat of a perilous powerless
- 21:00Speaker 2: is too strong word, difficult financial state. We don't know
- 21:03Speaker 2: if ownership was giving him flexibility or not. The new ownership, well,
- 21:07Speaker 2: aj Peller traded some of his best prospects to get
- 21:10Speaker 2: Robbie Ray and Casey Mice took on by my estimation,
- 21:14Speaker 2: about nine million, a little less maybe, or somewhere in
- 21:17Speaker 2: that range. And again the Padres aren't positioned to be
- 21:21Speaker 2: a playoff team. Two games out in the wild Card.
- 21:24Speaker 2: They've got, hopefully for them Pavetta and Musgrove coming back.
- 21:28Speaker 2: You have to admire the fact that they go for it.
- 21:31Speaker 2: They keep trying, all right. Speaking of trying so often,
- 21:35Speaker 2: we don't see a lot of trying from certain small
- 21:37Speaker 2: market teams, but a number of them were quite aggressive
- 21:41Speaker 2: by their standard yesterday. I'll talk about the Cleveland Guardians
- 21:44Speaker 2: for starters Foster Griffin, Joe Adell, Nathaniel Lowe. Earlier they
- 21:51Speaker 2: had added Blake Perkins and Craig Yoho, the reliever from
- 21:54Speaker 2: the Brewers. That's a good deadline for the Guardians, and
- 21:56Speaker 2: they're chasing the White Sox and the Ale Central and
- 21:59Speaker 2: normally again not too aggressive, but they did very well
- 22:02Speaker 2: in my estimation. The Twins team that tore down last
- 22:06Speaker 2: year was the talk of the deadline last year because
- 22:09Speaker 2: they completely blew it up. They added too. They added
- 22:12Speaker 2: Jeff Hoffman, one of the best relievers available. Aj Minterer,
- 22:15Speaker 2: quality left handed reliever as well as a depth starter.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Dean Kramer was not having a good year, but good
- 22:21Speaker 2: for the Twins in not trading guys and in trading
- 22:24Speaker 2: for other players that can possibly help them. And finally,
- 22:28Speaker 2: the Pirates, a team that has been derided by me
- 22:31Speaker 2: and others for years for not trying. No, they didn't
- 22:34Speaker 2: get the bat that they need, but they've got some
- 22:36Speaker 2: hitters coming off the il that should help an offense
- 22:39Speaker 2: that has been one of the best in baseball. What
- 22:41Speaker 2: they did was reinforce a bullpen that has crushed them
- 22:44Speaker 2: all season. Luke Weaver, the best reliever traded at the deadline,
- 22:48Speaker 2: is now a Pittsburgh Pirate. They also got Kirby Yates
- 22:52Speaker 2: from the Angels. Luke, I'm sorry, Lake Balker from the
- 22:55Speaker 2: Miami Marlins. Good job by the Pirates in getting all
- 22:58Speaker 2: of that done. And finally, in my winners category, I've
- 23:03Speaker 2: got the Los Angeles Angels now. The Los Angeles Angels
- 23:06Speaker 2: are a team that we also have mocked for years
- 23:09Speaker 2: for their transactional efforts. If you want to call them
- 23:15Speaker 2: out at the deadline and in the offseason. They weren't
- 23:17Speaker 2: efforts that really were praised at any time, But in
- 23:21Speaker 2: this particular case, the Angels finally traded some players acted
- 23:26Speaker 2: as sellers. Let's face it, they were sellers, and the
- 23:29Speaker 2: only potential free agent of the players they traded was
- 23:32Speaker 2: Brent Suter, the reliever who went to Atlanta. They traded
- 23:36Speaker 2: these players who were all under club control beyond this season,
- 23:39Speaker 2: Jose Soriano, Joe Adell, Ryan Zephyr, John, Chase Silseth, and
- 23:45Speaker 2: Logan o'happy. Now, some of those guys have more value
- 23:47Speaker 2: than others, Soriana clearly the most. They did hold on
- 23:51Speaker 2: to zach Netto and Redebtmers. Evidently they did not get
- 23:54Speaker 2: the offers they wanted for those guys. But good for
- 23:57Speaker 2: the Angels and finally under their interim GM John mozaylock
- 24:02Speaker 2: pointing toward the future while not just tearing up the present.
- 24:06Speaker 2: No one expected them to do that. Mozillak didn't want
- 24:08Speaker 2: them to rebuild, said they didn't need to rebuild, but
- 24:12Speaker 2: they are a team that at least picked its head
- 24:16Speaker 2: up and said, Okay, we need change. Mozelak has been
- 24:19Speaker 2: pretty adamant about that, so the Angels. I've got them
- 24:22Speaker 2: as a winner. Again, not a complete list of winners,
- 24:25Speaker 2: and we can talk about every team at length at
- 24:28Speaker 2: some other point perhaps, but that's my list of winners.
- 24:31Speaker 2: All right. Losers now again, I'm gonna give the caveat
- 24:36Speaker 2: These teams might not end up losers. They may end
- 24:38Speaker 2: up in the winners category for a variety of reasons.
- 24:41Speaker 2: But let's start with the Yankees. The Yankees needed a
- 24:45Speaker 2: right handed hitting catch. We've heard about this for months.
- 24:48Speaker 2: They needed bullpen help. Cleared out some relievers over the
- 24:51Speaker 2: three or four days leading to the deadline to seemingly
- 24:54Speaker 2: open up some spaces. Now I'm not so worried about
- 24:57Speaker 2: their bullpen because if their rotation is relatively healthy, and
- 25:01Speaker 2: Rodin is coming back, and Clark Schmidt's coming back, he
- 25:04Speaker 2: could be a reliever. Okay, maybe the rotation won't stay healthy,
- 25:09Speaker 2: but okay. They can put Ryan Weathers in the bullpen.
- 25:12Speaker 2: They can put Will Warren in the bullpen, one or
- 25:14Speaker 2: both if they need to. The bullpen should be okay.
- 25:18Speaker 2: I would have liked to see them get one more,
- 25:19Speaker 2: but not a lot of good relievers are traded. The
- 25:22Speaker 2: real question is the offense without judge, without Bellinger, without Stanton,
- 25:26Speaker 2: They acquired Elliott Ramos, really good hitter from the San
- 25:30Speaker 2: Francisco Giants. Luis Garcia Junior, who had a memorable debut
- 25:34Speaker 2: left handed hitter, didn't seem to be a fit. But
- 25:36Speaker 2: these two guys should help the offense. The question is
- 25:39Speaker 2: did the Yankees do enough? Did they should they have
- 25:41Speaker 2: gotten the catcher when each of their division rivals, well
- 25:45Speaker 2: two of their division rivals did, the Red Sox with
- 25:47Speaker 2: Adelie Rushman we'll get to that trade, and the Tampa
- 25:50Speaker 2: Bay Rays with Liam Hicks. Maybe they should have done
- 25:53Speaker 2: something more aggressive along those lines. I don't know that
- 25:56Speaker 2: they should have paid the price the Red Sox did
- 25:58Speaker 2: for Rushman, but again they didn't address that need. So
- 26:02Speaker 2: here they are. There's still a really good team. They're
- 26:04Speaker 2: going to be a good team, but you can't put
- 26:07Speaker 2: them in the winner category when they didn't address all
- 26:10Speaker 2: of what we thought they should and would address. Remember,
- 26:13Speaker 2: they wanted Mason Miller if he was available, he wasn't available. Well,
- 26:17Speaker 2: they didn't get anyone. There was going to be no
- 26:19Speaker 2: one like Mason Miller. But they didn't really reinforce their bullpen.
- 26:23Speaker 2: All Right, The Phillies. This is the most interesting team
- 26:27Speaker 2: of all in the whole deadline. What they did in
- 26:32Speaker 2: acquiring Luisa Rise to play second base is basically changed
- 26:36Speaker 2: the entire essence of their team. They really wanted a
- 26:40Speaker 2: right handed hitting outfielder. Weren't many available, weren't many traded. Okay,
- 26:45Speaker 2: so I admire their creativity here in getting a Rise,
- 26:49Speaker 2: a left handed hitting infielder. But to accommodate him and
- 26:53Speaker 2: he who doesn't want to move off second base as
- 26:55Speaker 2: he gets ready for another round of free agency. To
- 26:58Speaker 2: accommodate him, they are doing the following, moving Bryson Stott
- 27:03Speaker 2: to third base, moving Alec Bohm to first base, moving
- 27:06Speaker 2: Bryce Harper back to the outfield. And that's a lot
- 27:10Speaker 2: to do in the middle of a season, positional changes
- 27:13Speaker 2: that I do not expect to work out all that well,
- 27:17Speaker 2: particularly Bomb at first base. Bryce can play the outfield,
- 27:20Speaker 2: even though he hasn't in a while. I expect Bryson
- 27:22Speaker 2: Stott will be okay at third, but he's changing positions.
- 27:26Speaker 2: This was again a fascinating deadline. I can see this
- 27:30Speaker 2: team having some real defensive issues going forward. The Tigers
- 27:36Speaker 2: now the Tigers if you trade Trek's Google, You're always
- 27:39Speaker 2: going to be considered a loser. You didn't keep the
- 27:43Speaker 2: two time American League Sy Young winner, you didn't sign
- 27:47Speaker 2: him to an extension. You traded him at a time
- 27:49Speaker 2: when you're still in contention. By definition a loan, that
- 27:53Speaker 2: is not a great thing. Now, the package they got back,
- 27:57Speaker 2: most in the industry considered it to be light. But again,
- 28:00Speaker 2: Schooble was a rental. He's coming off an elbow surgery.
- 28:03Speaker 2: I know he's pitched extremely well since then, but rentals
- 28:08Speaker 2: only get you so much. And I thought they did fine.
- 28:11Speaker 2: It wasn't an amazing haul, but they did Okay. I
- 28:14Speaker 2: know Scott Harris was taking a lot of questions about
- 28:17Speaker 2: this last night. Okay, the pall is fine. And then
- 28:21Speaker 2: they trade Casey Mice. Now, after they traded Schooble, I
- 28:25Speaker 2: reported that they were going to try to thread the
- 28:27Speaker 2: needle and keep competing. If you had kept Mice, that
- 28:31Speaker 2: would have made more sense. That idea of doing that.
- 28:35Speaker 2: Without him, it becomes really difficult. And I know Jackson
- 28:37Speaker 2: job is coming back and that's good, but two and
- 28:41Speaker 2: a half games out in the wildcard race, five and
- 28:43Speaker 2: a half games back in the division. You keep Casey Miles,
- 28:46Speaker 2: maybe you got a shot at this thing. And again,
- 28:48Speaker 2: I don't know what the return will turn out to
- 28:50Speaker 2: be for myes, and we'll see, but threading the needle
- 28:54Speaker 2: becomes that much harder to do, not that it was
- 28:56Speaker 2: ever going to be easy anyway. The Brewers, now, this
- 29:01Speaker 2: was a team and is a team that routinely is
- 29:04Speaker 2: criticized for its lack of activity and routinely proves people
- 29:09Speaker 2: like myself wrong when they are criticized for not doing enough.
- 29:14Speaker 2: I thought a lot of people thought that, hey, they
- 29:17Speaker 2: were the team for schoobl best farm system in the game,
- 29:20Speaker 2: layers of prospects. They could have afforded it. I reported
- 29:24Speaker 2: that they could have absorbed the money, the nine point
- 29:26Speaker 2: four million dollars in salary. It all seemed set up
- 29:29Speaker 2: for them. CC Sabathia Part two. Remember Sabathia in two
- 29:33Speaker 2: thousand and eight. They didn't do it, Okay, that's their choice.
- 29:37Speaker 2: And the players they acquired, Dustin may Jojo Romero from
- 29:40Speaker 2: the Cardinals, Antonio Sanzetela from the Rockies. These guys are
- 29:45Speaker 2: good pitchers who once they get their share of the
- 29:48Speaker 2: Brewers magic dust, I'm sure it will be even better.
- 29:51Speaker 2: They'll probably get the Brewers ninety nine percent outcomes out
- 29:54Speaker 2: of all these guys. That's what they do. But again,
- 29:57Speaker 2: they were in a great spot to get Schooble and
- 30:00Speaker 2: didn't do it. All right. Finally, in the loser category,
- 30:02Speaker 2: the Braves didn't get a frontline starter. Have been talking
- 30:06Speaker 2: about getting a playoff caliber starter since the offseason. Alexanthropolis
- 30:11Speaker 2: still hasn't done it, and didn't do it and can't
- 30:13Speaker 2: do it anymore because the deadline has passed. Tyler Molly
- 30:17Speaker 2: is not that guy. Brent Suter reliever, Okay, Lane Thomas
- 30:21Speaker 2: outfielder should help fine, but they needed the frontline starter. Now,
- 30:26Speaker 2: this gets to the final part of the first segment.
- 30:28Speaker 2: It's the Jacob de Graham situation. Wrote about it today
- 30:31Speaker 2: for The Athletic. He was going to be the Braves guy,
- 30:35Speaker 2: and the Rangers, as I reported, approached him about waving
- 30:39Speaker 2: his not trade clause for the Braves and he said, no,
- 30:42Speaker 2: I want to win here. I don't want to go.
- 30:46Speaker 2: Braves probably thought he would go. They had met with
- 30:48Speaker 2: him in free agency to Gram's from Florida, pretty close
- 30:51Speaker 2: to Atlanta, closer than Texas. They had reasons to believe
- 30:55Speaker 2: maybe he would want to get out of Texas, which
- 30:57Speaker 2: is kind of in the American League Sea of mediocrity,
- 31:01Speaker 2: and play for the Atlanta Braves, who are really good.
- 31:04Speaker 2: He chose not to. That's a player's right when he
- 31:06Speaker 2: has a new trade clause. This reminded me somewhat of
- 31:09Speaker 2: Mike Trout, who has always been loyal to the Angels.
- 31:12Speaker 2: They paid me. I want to win for them. That's
- 31:14Speaker 2: essentially what de gram is saying here. And when that happened,
- 31:19Speaker 2: the Braves, well, they could have pivoted, They could have
- 31:22Speaker 2: pivoted to somebody. The Padres, with a lesser system, got
- 31:25Speaker 2: Robbie Ray and Casey Maize, and the Braves did nothing
- 31:28Speaker 2: of the sort. So with all that, that's where we
- 31:33Speaker 2: leave it at the deadline. Again, we could talk about
- 31:35Speaker 2: this for days and days, and we will talk about
- 31:37Speaker 2: it for days and days, but we've got more to
- 31:40Speaker 2: talk about with one specific trade. Right after this, the
- 31:43Speaker 2: inside Dish coming up.
- 31:45Speaker 5: Looking to take your MLB action to the next level
- 31:48Speaker 5: this season. Boosted Odds are here to crank up every pitch,
- 31:52Speaker 5: swing and home run bet. MGM is hooking you up
- 31:55Speaker 5: with your very own MLB Odds boost token to get
- 31:58Speaker 5: things started. All season long. Just add any MLB bet
- 32:02Speaker 5: to your bet slip, activate your odds boost token and
- 32:05Speaker 5: lock it in. If your bet hits, you're catching out
- 32:08Speaker 5: with an even bigger payout gambling problem called one eight
- 32:11Speaker 5: hundred gambler or one eight hundred my reset.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Time now for the inside Dish, the part of the
- 32:23Speaker 2: show where I talk about something that happened in the game,
- 32:26Speaker 2: a colmn I've written, I don't know, some combination of both.
- 32:29Speaker 2: I'm going to talk about the column I posted in
- 32:31Speaker 2: The Athletic this morning, and it's about the Rushman trade.
- 32:37Speaker 2: And the Rushman trade, to me, was the defining trade
- 32:40Speaker 2: of this deadline. It was fascinating Adlie Rushman going to
- 32:43Speaker 2: the Boston Red Sox for a number of prospects, and
- 32:47Speaker 2: it kind of, as I wrote, demonstrated two teams at
- 32:51Speaker 2: opposite extremes. The Orioles, a team that was supposedly going
- 32:55Speaker 2: to be a competitive, contending type club by now. They
- 32:59Speaker 2: talked to lift off their president of base Operations, Michael
- 33:02Speaker 2: Olias did in twenty twenty two. They didn't lift off,
- 33:07Speaker 2: they haven't crashed, but they've kind of gone nowhere, and
- 33:10Speaker 2: now they've traded the guy they picked number one over
- 33:14Speaker 2: Bobby Wick Junior in twenty nineteen. The guy that was
- 33:18Speaker 2: really the signature piece of their rebuild, the guy who
- 33:21Speaker 2: they talked about keeping forever and yet never signed to
- 33:25Speaker 2: a long term extension. That guy is, of course, Rushman.
- 33:30Speaker 2: And the reason that this trade for the Orioles was
- 33:34Speaker 2: so deflating to so many of their fans is that
- 33:38Speaker 2: it kind of acknowledges that the whole thing hasn't gone
- 33:42Speaker 2: according to plan. Fans are asked all the time, trust
- 33:46Speaker 2: the process, stay with us. Their Oriols fans did through
- 33:50Speaker 2: some really hard years. They tanked, they got some big picks,
- 33:54Speaker 2: and now they are not starting over, but certainly retooling
- 33:59Speaker 2: in a way that is going to require more patience.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Now they've got pieces in place going forward, they'll be okay.
- 34:05Speaker 2: They've got Alonzo and they've got Basaio signed long term.
- 34:10Speaker 2: They've got pieces in their rotation, Kyle Bradish, of course,
- 34:13Speaker 2: Shane Ba's long term. They can extend a qualifying offer
- 34:17Speaker 2: to Trevor Rodgers. But fans are right to ask, hey, man,
- 34:23Speaker 2: what's going on here? Why is michae Elias still running
- 34:28Speaker 2: this team in his eighth year when we're not going forward? Now,
- 34:33Speaker 2: the trade itself, as I wrote purely in the context
- 34:38Speaker 2: of what happened, the exchange of players that, in the
- 34:41Speaker 2: estimation of a lot of people in the game, is
- 34:44Speaker 2: going to be a big win for the Oriols. They
- 34:46Speaker 2: got the better surplus value, and that's the amount in
- 34:49Speaker 2: which a player's actual production exceeds his salary. The Orioles
- 34:54Speaker 2: crushed it in that regard, assuming these prospects turn out
- 34:58Speaker 2: to be something along the lines of what they want
- 35:00Speaker 2: them to be. But we're not playing the surplus value
- 35:02Speaker 2: sweepstakes here. We're playing to win a World Series. The
- 35:05Speaker 2: Oriols did not win a playoff game with Rushman. They
- 35:09Speaker 2: did not or have not won a playoff game with
- 35:11Speaker 2: Michael Olias running the team he took over in November
- 35:14Speaker 2: twenty eighteen. They're a disappointment right now, and that trade
- 35:18Speaker 2: for them, even though it obviously could turn out to
- 35:23Speaker 2: be really well. They got two great pitching prospects, they
- 35:26Speaker 2: got an outfield prospect, Carlos Nevas came back as a
- 35:29Speaker 2: catcher of the deal. They're gonna be okay with the
- 35:31Speaker 2: players they acquired, and they did pretty well overall. The
- 35:36Speaker 2: Taylor Ward going Tyler Wells going, Olias said he wasn't
- 35:40Speaker 2: dismantling the team. Okay, you didn't dismantle the team, but
- 35:43Speaker 2: the team is not nearly as good now as it
- 35:45Speaker 2: was before. Where are the Oriols going with this? Well,
- 35:50Speaker 2: how much time will Mike Elias get Well? I don't
- 35:52Speaker 2: know the answers to these questions, but at the same time,
- 35:56Speaker 2: fans are certainly well within their bounds to ask them.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Now for the Red Sox, and when I talk about
- 36:02Speaker 2: an opposite extreme, here's a club. We know what they
- 36:06Speaker 2: were earlier in the season. They fired their manager, the
- 36:09Speaker 2: team presidents said they were playing in a way that
- 36:12Speaker 2: was embarrassing and unacceptable. And yet then they took off.
- 36:16Speaker 2: They've had this amazing run now, incredible, best team in
- 36:19Speaker 2: baseball for about six weeks, and they're president of Baseball operations.
- 36:24Speaker 2: I'm sorry. Chief baseball Officer Craig Breslow was emboldened by
- 36:27Speaker 2: all this, and he took a huge swing with this trade.
- 36:32Speaker 2: He didn't hug prospects here, and I kind of applaud
- 36:34Speaker 2: him for that. I did applaud him for that in
- 36:36Speaker 2: the column, because you know what, prospects don't always turn
- 36:39Speaker 2: out so great. The Red Sox have one example after
- 36:41Speaker 2: another in recent times, including one who was traded yesterday,
- 36:44Speaker 2: Marcelo Meyer, that demonstrate sometimes we overhyped these guys, big
- 36:50Speaker 2: market prospects especially get overrighted. And from that perspective, I'm
- 36:56Speaker 2: good with it. I'm good with making this kind of trade.
- 36:58Speaker 2: It's a risk, yeah, but you're trying to win. The
- 37:01Speaker 2: problem is the player you got. Rushman is someone who
- 37:05Speaker 2: has been on the injured list five times in the
- 37:09Speaker 2: last two seasons, three times this year. He's currently on
- 37:12Speaker 2: the injured risk with left wrist inflammation, which could be
- 37:17Speaker 2: problematic when it comes back because risks are extremely important
- 37:20Speaker 2: to hitters. So that's one question here. Okay, if you
- 37:24Speaker 2: sign him to a long term extension, and that's fine,
- 37:28Speaker 2: you're going to be good with him. But should you
- 37:31Speaker 2: sign him to a long term extension. He's a guy
- 37:33Speaker 2: who is has been an inconsistent performer offensively, though it's
- 37:39Speaker 2: been good this year, and then you have the problem.
- 37:42Speaker 2: This gets back to the extension of next season, which
- 37:45Speaker 2: might not be played to its completion, and after that,
- 37:48Speaker 2: Adlie Rushman is a free agent. Again. An extension would
- 37:51Speaker 2: solve that particular issue, but is this a player you
- 37:55Speaker 2: want to give an extension to And is this a
- 37:57Speaker 2: player coming into an entirely new stay a staff that
- 38:01Speaker 2: ranks third in the America, actually third in the major
- 38:03Speaker 2: leagues in era. That's a little bit of a risk too.
- 38:07Speaker 2: So did the Red Sox overplay their hands here? It
- 38:10Speaker 2: is quite possible, also quite possible that Adlei Rushman becomes
- 38:14Speaker 2: a player for them who helps elevate them further and
- 38:18Speaker 2: makes them into a team that is an actual force
- 38:21Speaker 2: in the postseason. If all that happens, Craig Breslow is
- 38:24Speaker 2: gonna look really good for making this move. But it
- 38:27Speaker 2: is a gamble. It is the kind of gamble most
- 38:31Speaker 2: heads of baseball operations do not take. It is the
- 38:33Speaker 2: kind of gamble that within the industry often gets looked
- 38:36Speaker 2: on in a way that is critical. And it's a
- 38:40Speaker 2: gamble that really could go either way. So Breslow wasn't
- 38:45Speaker 2: playing the surplus value game here. He acknowledged that, and
- 38:48Speaker 2: in a way I do applaud him for that. At
- 38:50Speaker 2: the same time, this one is going to be one
- 38:53Speaker 2: that we'll be watching closely for quite some time. All Right,
- 38:58Speaker 2: We're gonna be right back with Grill and Ken. But
- 39:00Speaker 2: mlbon Fox is streaming on Fox one, and I've got
- 39:03Speaker 2: the Guardians White Sox series this weekend. Now this weekend
- 39:08Speaker 2: with my man Aj Prizinski there in the booth. Of course,
- 39:13Speaker 2: he's the king of foul Territory. We are going to
- 39:15Speaker 2: have a lot of fun. We're going to have a
- 39:16Speaker 2: lot of fun because the White Sox are not only
- 39:19Speaker 2: playing the Guardians, the team that is just three games
- 39:21Speaker 2: back in the Ale Central, three games behind the surprising
- 39:25Speaker 2: Chicago White Sox, but they are also retiring Ozzi Gian's
- 39:29Speaker 2: number thirteen. Oziyan, of course, the manager who led them
- 39:32Speaker 2: to the last World Series, and AJ, from what I understand,
- 39:37Speaker 2: the always locacious Aj Prizentski is going to be giving
- 39:40Speaker 2: some kind of speech, So I look forward to hearing that.
- 39:44Speaker 2: I look forward to maybe getting on the broadcast of
- 39:46Speaker 2: AJ can stopped talking for five minutes. And I look
- 39:48Speaker 2: forward really to seeing the White Sox for the first
- 39:51Speaker 2: time on Fox this season, at least for my crew,
- 39:54Speaker 2: and seeing them play the Guardians, who have improved their
- 39:57Speaker 2: team as the White Sox have with Castillo co over
- 40:00Speaker 2: with some of the other things that they did. It's
- 40:02Speaker 2: going to be a really interesting series and I'm really
- 40:05Speaker 2: looking forward to it so again mlbon Fox is streaming

- 40:39Speaker 2: Now let's go to Grilling Can. All right, let's take
- 40:49Speaker 2: the first question here. See what we got on Grilling
- 40:52Speaker 2: Can today. I'm not sure what's coming at me, so
- 40:54Speaker 2: we'll see if there's any big surprises. All right, we'll
- 40:57Speaker 2: teeing it up here. It is laser show. But I
- 41:01Speaker 2: can't even pronounce this. Whatever. Does it make sense to
- 41:04Speaker 2: have games on deadline day? Actually, this has been a
- 41:07Speaker 2: concern of Baseball. It's one reason they don't do it
- 41:09Speaker 2: on a day with a lot of day games. But
- 41:12Speaker 2: it does make sense to have games at night once
- 41:15Speaker 2: the deadline has passed. There's no problem with that. Baseball's
- 41:18Speaker 2: concern with afternoon games on deadline day is players pulled
- 41:22Speaker 2: off the field, the whole spectacle that sometimes will take
- 41:26Speaker 2: place in that circumstance. But it's pretty cool actually to
- 41:29Speaker 2: see a guy like Luis Garcia Junior, who has actually
- 41:32Speaker 2: acquired the day before, come in with the Yankees last
- 41:35Speaker 2: night and hit the big homer. And obviously that's not
- 41:38Speaker 2: going to happen very often on a player who is
- 41:41Speaker 2: traded that day can't get to the park soon enough.
- 41:43Speaker 2: But yeah, it makes sense to have games on deadline day,
- 41:47Speaker 2: No problem with that, all right? Next question, what do
- 41:49Speaker 2: we got? Next question is if things go well for
- 41:55Speaker 2: Clayholmes in Chicago the next couple of months, do you
- 41:58Speaker 2: think an extension could be a remote possibility before the lockout?
- 42:02Speaker 2: Given that he's not repped by Bores. The reference there
- 42:05Speaker 2: is to Scott Boris, the agent whose clients generally do
- 42:08Speaker 2: not sign extensions and go free agent Derek Scrubel will
- 42:11Speaker 2: of course be won. Yes, I'm sure Clay Holmes will
- 42:14Speaker 2: be open to an extension. He has a player option
- 42:17Speaker 2: that he can likely decline or will decline. I'm almost
- 42:21Speaker 2: certain as long as he performs well here, stays healthy,
- 42:24Speaker 2: and I am sure he'd be open to an extension
- 42:27Speaker 2: with the Cubs. Players like playing for the Chicago Cubs,
- 42:30Speaker 2: and it can be a really good situation for Holmes
- 42:33Speaker 2: if indeed it works out. So yeah, I think that
- 42:36Speaker 2: is part of the problem or part of the equation here.
- 42:38Speaker 2: It's not part of the problem. It's certainly possible that, yes,
- 42:42Speaker 2: the Cubs could re sign Clay Holmes. So with that,
- 42:46Speaker 2: I want to thank everyone for watching, for listening, for
- 42:48Speaker 2: reading The Athletic the last few days. Foul Territory coming
- 42:52Speaker 2: up at one pm Eastern. The hosts, as I said,
- 42:55Speaker 2: the locacious H. J. Prasinski as well as Scott Braun.
- 42:58Speaker 2: Guests include Jimbo, Susan Sluster, and my colleague from the Athletic,
- 43:03Speaker 2: Jesus Cano. We're back Thursday at twelve thirty Eastern. Talk
- 43:07Speaker 2: to you then. Have a great week everyone, and try
- 43:09Speaker 2: to digest all that happened on deadline day.
