Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Gavin Grey: Europe correspondent on five people killed in several shootings in northern France
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Kevin Gray from the UK. Good morning, hither Andrew. So
- 0:04Speaker 1: let's go to France first, where five people have died
- 0:07Speaker 1: in shootings in northern France and this might effect be
- 0:10Speaker 1: some sort of VIGILENTI attach.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Yes, that's what local media is reporting. So a twenty
- 0:16Speaker 2: two year old man has now turned himself into police.
- 0:19Speaker 2: But four people that's including two security guards and two
- 0:23Speaker 2: men staying in a camp on the coastline of Dunkirk,
- 0:26Speaker 2: believed to be migrants possibly trying to get across to
- 0:29Speaker 2: the UK, have been killed in these shootings. The government
- 0:33Speaker 2: is also confessed it's alleged to an earlier shooting in
- 0:36Speaker 2: the nearby town, and it is thought that the earlier
- 0:39Speaker 2: shooting was that of his boss. Again unconfirmed reports several
- 0:43Speaker 2: firearms were found in the suspect's car, he said. The
- 0:47Speaker 2: police are saying that he is previously unknown to them.
- 0:51Speaker 2: But all five murders were reportedly committed within just a
- 0:54Speaker 2: two hour killing spree in the Dunkirk area, and it
- 0:58Speaker 2: looks like the age ranges from something like thirty seven
- 1:02Speaker 2: down to nineteen. And obviously police absolutely cover in the
- 1:06Speaker 2: area and looking at finding motives for this. But as
- 1:09Speaker 2: I said, it does appear to be that this young
- 1:11Speaker 2: man had already expressed some pretty severe anti migrant attitudes
- 1:17Speaker 2: and that's I think probably the motive that police are
- 1:19Speaker 2: now looking at.
- 1:20Speaker 1: So these guys are all camping around there because they
- 1:21Speaker 1: want to get to England, get across the channel, and
- 1:23Speaker 1: of course it was at a huge peak of while back.
- 1:25Speaker 1: How a bad are these camps these days? Have the
- 1:28Speaker 1: numbers dropped because the world's become more stable?
- 1:31Speaker 2: No, I wish I could say they have, and maybe
- 1:34Speaker 2: they will. Syria is something like the second or third
- 1:37Speaker 2: most popular country for people trying to make that journey.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Perhaps now things in Syria have changed that or damper numbers.
- 1:43Speaker 2: But you know, it really is it's like so many tentacles.
- 1:46Speaker 2: As soon as you cut one off the authorities investigating this,
- 1:50Speaker 2: another one simply grows up. But this government looking at
- 1:52Speaker 2: how to work with other officers from police stations and
- 1:55Speaker 2: police national police officers around the world in order to
- 1:59Speaker 2: try and combat is. But it does seem to be
- 2:01Speaker 2: extremely difficult to try and bring the numbers down, and
- 2:03Speaker 2: the conditions in those cabs as we are in December,
- 2:06Speaker 2: it's wet, it's cold, it's miserable, really pretty awful.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Now I found out New Islands maybe, and it's between
- 2:13Speaker 1: Madagesca and Mozambique, Africa, and it's near the Comoros, and
- 2:17Speaker 1: it's called Mayotts and it's just been hammered by a cyclone.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yeah, the worst in nearly a century. It is a
- 2:24Speaker 2: French Indian territory, so France is immediately sending some two
- 2:29Speaker 2: hundred and fifty firefighters and security personnel to MyoD. As
- 2:33Speaker 2: you said, you've probably never heard of it. It's very,
- 2:35Speaker 2: very small, but this cyclone called Cyclone China, absolutely ripped
- 2:40Speaker 2: through that particular area, causing wing gusts of two hundred
- 2:44Speaker 2: and twenty five kilometers an hour, and there are lots
- 2:46Speaker 2: of fears. I'm afraid that the death toll here could
- 2:49Speaker 2: rise considerably. It has been confirmed eleven were killed, two
- 2:52Speaker 2: hundred and forty six injured. However, they are really only
- 2:56Speaker 2: just being able to start to get to the areas
- 2:59Speaker 2: that are worst effected, and lots of buildings have been
- 3:02Speaker 2: absolutely flattened by this, so I'm a fear that it
- 3:05Speaker 2: could well see a rising deathtoll over the next few hours.
- 3:08Speaker 2: There are reports of trees being uprooted, ruse being ripped
- 3:11Speaker 2: off power lines being down, and I'm afraid communications in
- 3:15Speaker 2: the area absolutely on the floor. So it's going to
- 3:18Speaker 2: take a very very long time to get those rescuers
- 3:21Speaker 2: into action and a very long time for those French
- 3:24Speaker 2: firefighters on security personnel to arrive too.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Kevin Gray from the UK, I thank you for more
