- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, what's happened? Everybody?
- 0:11Speaker 2: Welcome into another edition of to check O Daily. It's
- 0:14Speaker 2: Andrew de Checko here, Eagles beat reporter for insidethebirds dot Com.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Happy Festivus for those who celebrate.
- 0:20Speaker 2: I know I will make sure that I watched the
- 0:23Speaker 2: Great Seinfeld Festivus episode, as I like to do each.
- 0:27Speaker 1: And every year on this day. Enjoy the day.
- 0:30Speaker 2: And we are getting really close to Christmas. This whole
- 0:33Speaker 2: holiday season just flies by. It tends to do that
- 0:37Speaker 2: every year. But the Eagles take on the Buffalo Bills
- 0:41Speaker 2: on Sunday in a game that I can't wait, frankly,
- 0:45Speaker 2: to see how it plays out. It's sort of a
- 0:47Speaker 2: better barometer this caliber of a team, and they're not
- 0:50Speaker 2: world beaters by any stretch, but I'm curious to see
- 0:53Speaker 2: how the Eagles measure up after really outclassing the Raiders
- 0:58Speaker 2: and the Commanders, and now they'll face Josh Allen and
- 1:00Speaker 2: the Buffalo Bills. So a little bit about what's on
- 1:04Speaker 2: the agenda today as far as the Eagles media coverage goes.
- 1:08Speaker 2: At one fifty five, we'll hear from defensive coordinator of
- 1:12Speaker 2: Fic Fangio and Michael Clay, the special teams coordinator. Of course,
- 1:16Speaker 2: at two point fifty, they'll be practice. I think yesterday
- 1:19Speaker 2: I may have said that there is a walk through.
- 1:21Speaker 2: It's not a walk through, it's a regular practice. I'm
- 1:23Speaker 2: getting all my days mixed up here. I didn't have
- 1:25Speaker 2: the schedule in front of me. But this will be
- 1:27Speaker 2: the equivalent of a Wednesday practice, So we'll get to
- 1:29Speaker 2: see just a you know.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Five minutes or so of practice.
- 1:34Speaker 2: So we'll obviously be keeping an eye on the health
- 1:38Speaker 2: status of defensive tackle Jaylen Carter, right tackle Lane Johnson,
- 1:43Speaker 2: and of course linebacker na Kobe Dean, who suffered a
- 1:47Speaker 2: hamstring injury against the Commanders. So those are three players
- 1:50Speaker 2: that I'll certainly be king in on. And then, of
- 1:52Speaker 2: course you always have to be mindful of the dreaded
- 1:55Speaker 2: pop up injury. Who knows that that will happen, but
- 1:58Speaker 2: it's something that you always want to take stock of.
- 2:01Speaker 2: So practice will be at two fifty, and then at
- 2:03Speaker 2: four point thirty or thereabouts, that's where the Eagles will
- 2:07Speaker 2: have an open locker room. And then coinciding with that
- 2:11Speaker 2: will be press conferences for Jalen Hurtz and Kevin Patulo,
- 2:15Speaker 2: the Eagles offensive coordinator so that's your media, your media
- 2:19Speaker 2: schedule for today, that's what you can expect. And this
- 2:22Speaker 2: week is up and running, and it starts today at
- 2:25Speaker 2: one fifty with Vic Fangio and then Michael Clay.
- 2:29Speaker 1: A lot of.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Conversation coming off the previous game centered around kicker Jake Elliott,
- 2:34Speaker 2: and understandably so, he's not having a great season. He's
- 2:38Speaker 2: been really spotty fifty percent in fact, from fifty plus
- 2:43Speaker 2: field goal attempts, and for perspective, the league average is
- 2:48Speaker 2: right around sixty seven percent. And when you look at
- 2:52Speaker 2: Jake Elliott this season, his field goal percentage is seventy
- 2:55Speaker 2: point eight. That's the lowest that he's had at any
- 2:59Speaker 2: of his seasons back to twenty seventeen when he was
- 3:01Speaker 2: a rookie. The lowest prior to that in field goal
- 3:05Speaker 2: percentage was in twenty twenty when he had seventy three
- 3:08Speaker 2: point seven. Last season, for those curious, was seventy seven
- 3:12Speaker 2: point eight.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Don't expect the Eagles.
- 3:14Speaker 2: To make a change or bring in competition or anything,
- 3:18Speaker 2: not at this time, not when you're set.
- 3:21Speaker 1: To make a postseason run.
- 3:22Speaker 2: The best case scenario is they just allow Jake to
- 3:26Speaker 2: work through some of these challenges. He's been money in
- 3:28Speaker 2: the postseason, and it may alter the way the Eagles
- 3:33Speaker 2: choose to approach some of those situations, those fourth down situations,
- 3:38Speaker 2: and you may have to be more aggressive. It's something
- 3:40Speaker 2: to keep an eye on, but it's not an overreaction
- 3:44Speaker 2: to be concerned about the kicking situation, because there's enough
- 3:47Speaker 2: of a sample size there to leave you skeptical that
- 3:53Speaker 2: Jay can make a big kick in a critical moment.
- 3:57Speaker 2: He's done that time and time again in his career,
- 3:59Speaker 2: and he should have bought up some equity. I don't
- 4:01Speaker 2: view this as nostalgia or anything like that. He deserves
- 4:05Speaker 2: the benefit of the doubt. And you're not going to
- 4:07Speaker 2: swap out a kicker at this stage of the game,
- 4:10Speaker 2: and you're not going to find anyone more proficient or
- 4:12Speaker 2: one that you can have confidence in fully this late
- 4:17Speaker 2: in the season as the postseason is fast approaching.
- 4:20Speaker 1: So it is something to be mindful of.
- 4:23Speaker 2: And I'm curious to see if the Eagles sort of
- 4:25Speaker 2: change their approach and maybe they're a little bit more
- 4:27Speaker 2: aggressive in maybe some fourth and long type of situations
- 4:32Speaker 2: where you ordinarily would have Jake attempt a field goal.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Maybe that that kind of changes the way that you
- 4:37Speaker 2: play it. But yeah, special teams is going to be
- 4:40Speaker 2: something that I'm curious to hear what Michael Clay has
- 4:43Speaker 2: to say today. Obviously, Jake Elliott missing the forty three yarder,
- 4:46Speaker 2: he missed the fifty seven yarder and the fifty two yarder.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Only one of those counted on the on the stat sheet,
- 4:53Speaker 2: but all of his kicks were slightly wide left and
- 4:57Speaker 2: they all looked identical. So I'm wondering what's going on there,
- 5:02Speaker 2: and i want to hear what Michael has to say
- 5:04Speaker 2: about that. And then the return game, they've sort of
- 5:07Speaker 2: injected some life into it with Britain Covey on punt returns.
- 5:10Speaker 2: He's made some really sound decisions. One of the smartest
- 5:13Speaker 2: players on the football field. I say this time and
- 5:15Speaker 2: time again. Wouldn't surprise me if he becomes a coach
- 5:17Speaker 2: at some point when his playing career is finished. The
- 5:20Speaker 2: way that he approaches that return role and that the
- 5:24Speaker 2: time that he puts into it, and just his mindset
- 5:28Speaker 2: in how to make those split decisions. And I've just
- 5:31Speaker 2: had so many conversations with him over the years, and
- 5:34Speaker 2: highly intelligent guy. In college, he drew up his own
- 5:37Speaker 2: punt returns and he meets I think I wrote a
- 5:41Speaker 2: I wrote a story about this, but I think I
- 5:43Speaker 2: mentioned it on one of these podcasts where he'll meet
- 5:45Speaker 2: with his gunners in person and he'll text different clips
- 5:50Speaker 2: to his his you know, the return units, about what
- 5:53Speaker 2: certain teams like to do, different tendencies. He puts a
- 5:56Speaker 2: lot of time into it, and so there's no surprise
- 5:58Speaker 2: why when it looks like a highly functioning operation on
- 6:03Speaker 2: game day when he's back there as your returner. Now
- 6:06Speaker 2: on the kick return aspect of it all.
- 6:09Speaker 1: They haven't had the big pop.
- 6:11Speaker 2: It's been consistent with Will Shipley and Britain Covey. I
- 6:15Speaker 2: think they've settled that down a little bit, but I
- 6:17Speaker 2: understand that much of the there's going to be some
- 6:20Speaker 2: skepticism around the special teams. You know, look, it's been
- 6:23Speaker 2: pretty solid all season, aside from some penalties. I think
- 6:26Speaker 2: Keey Ringo has been outstanding as a gunner. Sidney Brown's
- 6:30Speaker 2: had really good moments, especially against the Commanders. He just
- 6:34Speaker 2: needs to avoid penalties. Trotter and Kylin grantson kam Lattu,
- 6:38Speaker 2: Will Shipley in coverage, he's had some nice moments on returns,
- 6:43Speaker 2: had the fumble against the Commanders and had some hesitation
- 6:47Speaker 2: where he didn't seem to be quite sure where his
- 6:48Speaker 2: feet were at the time, it looked like Britain Covey
- 6:50Speaker 2: was telling him to stay in the end zone. But
- 6:52Speaker 2: aside from that, he's been really solid. I don't have
- 6:55Speaker 2: any concern there. But special teams they need redemption this
- 7:01Speaker 2: week and that's something that Michael, we'll talk about today
- 7:05Speaker 2: and I'll be keying in on against the Buffalo Bills.
- 7:08Speaker 2: No one really pays attention to special teams. Me being
- 7:11Speaker 2: one of the exceptions, I pay a lot of attention
- 7:14Speaker 2: to it, but it doesn't get talked about unless there.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Is an issue more often than not.
- 7:19Speaker 2: And that was a primary talking point looking at that
- 7:23Speaker 2: unit coming off that Commander's game. But they've been really
- 7:26Speaker 2: sounding coverage. Braden Mann has been outstanding. I'll get to
- 7:30Speaker 2: him in a moment, and I think Britain Covey has
- 7:33Speaker 2: really settled things down as a returner.
- 7:35Speaker 1: So there is a lot of optimism there.
- 7:37Speaker 2: But the kicking situation is something that they're going to
- 7:40Speaker 2: have to be mindful of, obviously, but try they're gonna
- 7:43Speaker 2: have to get this rectified, and they don't have a
- 7:46Speaker 2: lot of weeks here to have that dialed.
- 7:48Speaker 1: In going into the postseason.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I think the operation between Jake Elliott, long snapper Charlie Hewlett,
- 7:54Speaker 2: who is in his eleventh season, I believe he's been
- 7:57Speaker 2: around a lot. I think that helps the situation, and
- 8:00Speaker 2: Braden Mann being one of the better holders in the NFL. Now,
- 8:04Speaker 2: I'm not gonna sit here and be dis it would
- 8:05Speaker 2: be disingenuous to me to tell you that I evaluate
- 8:08Speaker 2: all of the holders, But when you watch his consistency
- 8:11Speaker 2: and things of that nature, I have to imagine that
- 8:14Speaker 2: he just has He's just doing it at such a
- 8:16Speaker 2: high level right now that he probably should be regarded
- 8:18Speaker 2: among the best at what he does in that role
- 8:21Speaker 2: as well. Now, the Eagles have five Pro Bowlers and
- 8:25Speaker 2: this was announced on Wednesday morning. Five Pro Bowlers and

- 12:09Speaker 3: even show love to the community with specials for fans, students,

- 12:19Speaker 3: great prices and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 12:23Speaker 3: one and up.
- 12:24Speaker 2: And some thoughts here Jalen Carter, Yeah, he didn't necessarily
- 12:30Speaker 2: have his best season. I think that's a little bit
- 12:33Speaker 2: on reputation. Quinnant Mitchell and Cooper Degene, I'm really happy
- 12:37Speaker 2: to see them get the recognition because outside of Cooper
- 12:41Speaker 2: Dejene's two interceptions, they don't necessarily have the stats to
- 12:44Speaker 2: support that. And sometimes you worry about that getting lost
- 12:49Speaker 2: when stats are stats are king, when you know, whether
- 12:53Speaker 2: it's the fan voting or even around the NFL, if
- 12:57Speaker 2: you're not watching Eagles football or not really in tune
- 13:01Speaker 2: to some of the preeminent players at that position, sometimes
- 13:05Speaker 2: quality play like that gets lost, And especially for Queenyon Mitchell,
- 13:09Speaker 2: who doesn't have any regular season interceptions. If you're watching
- 13:12Speaker 2: the games and you're paying attention, the Eagles have had
- 13:15Speaker 2: plenty of primetime games, you see the impact that Quinyon
- 13:18Speaker 2: Mitchell has. He completely erases one.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Side of the field.
- 13:21Speaker 2: He's really physical and you don't hear from him a
- 13:24Speaker 2: lot because he takes care of business. He blankets whoever
- 13:27Speaker 2: he's guarding that week, and he just keeps getting better
- 13:31Speaker 2: and it's been really remarkable to see Cooper dejen has
- 13:35Speaker 2: been outstanding in that nickel role tackling. You talk about
- 13:40Speaker 2: his open field tackling, I would argue that he's one
- 13:44Speaker 2: of the better defensive backs in the NFL in terms
- 13:47Speaker 2: of just pure tackling the fundamentals, and he's sticky in coverage.
- 13:52Speaker 2: He has now two interceptions this year. The one that
- 13:55Speaker 2: Josh Johnson threw on Saturday was sort of gift wrapped.
- 13:58Speaker 2: I saw that play coming on mile away. But Cooper
- 14:02Speaker 2: is just a really good football player, and I think
- 14:05Speaker 2: you see why Vic Fangio loves to keep him inside
- 14:08Speaker 2: at that nickel corner position because he processes things quickly.
- 14:12Speaker 2: He can face receivers of all shapes and sizes, bigger
- 14:15Speaker 2: body ones like Mike Evans and smaller, quicker ones guys
- 14:21Speaker 2: like Lad McConkie who are really technical route runners and
- 14:24Speaker 2: know how to find the saw spots in zone they
- 14:26Speaker 2: run routes like a savvy pro. He can handle all
- 14:29Speaker 2: of that, and then you factor in his ability with
- 14:31Speaker 2: the run fits and just a general understanding of that
- 14:35Speaker 2: defense and what all the responsibilities are across the board.
- 14:38Speaker 2: He doesn't have the sideline as a you know, as
- 14:43Speaker 2: something that's going to give him an assyst You have
- 14:45Speaker 2: a lot more ground to cover, and he's just always
- 14:48Speaker 2: in the mix. He's always in the action, mixing it up,
- 14:51Speaker 2: and so it was good to see both QUINNYA. Mitchell
- 14:53Speaker 2: and Cooper Degene get that recognition. Cam Jurgens is a
- 14:57Speaker 2: little bit of a surprise because he's clear not been
- 15:00Speaker 2: himself this year and he had the off season back surgery.
- 15:03Speaker 2: We've talked a lot about that on this podcast, and
- 15:06Speaker 2: I think as a result, he hasn't played his best.
- 15:09Speaker 2: So out of all everyone on the offensive line, that
- 15:12Speaker 2: was a little bit of a surprise. And he goes
- 15:16Speaker 2: to he's gonna and he's gonna be on that on
- 15:18Speaker 2: that roster, and you look at Dolmen from the Bears.
- 15:24Speaker 2: I thought that you can make an argument that he
- 15:25Speaker 2: had a better season. I don't know that it's even
- 15:28Speaker 2: an argument he did have a better season.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Of course, Dolman. Drew Dahlman was with the.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Falcons, and I thought that he had a really really
- 15:37Speaker 2: strong game, if you want to go back to just
- 15:39Speaker 2: looking at it from an Eagles perspective, when he was
- 15:42Speaker 2: with the Bears and the Eagles and on Black Friday,
- 15:45Speaker 2: and he had a really good game. So did Darnell Wright,
- 15:49Speaker 2: their left tackle. But I thought that you can, you know,
- 15:53Speaker 2: there should have been I thought it should have been
- 15:56Speaker 2: a little at least a little bit closer. But nevertheless,
- 15:59Speaker 2: Cam Jurgen's go is going to the Pro Bowl, and
- 16:01Speaker 2: again this is the initial Pro Bowl roster.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Things can change, obviously.
- 16:05Speaker 2: If the Eagles make that deep run in the postseason,
- 16:08Speaker 2: and then there's always the alternates and things like that.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts, I think is a fifth alternate. Keeley Ringo
- 16:16Speaker 2: is a fourth alternate for example, for special teams. And
- 16:20Speaker 2: you know, guys bow out, they get surgeries, they have
- 16:23Speaker 2: injuries that you know, after the regular season's over and
- 16:27Speaker 2: things tend to change a little bit. So we'll see
- 16:29Speaker 2: how everything shakes out. But if you're looking at two
- 16:32Speaker 2: players that I thought were snubbed from the Eagles truly,
- 16:36Speaker 2: I would say defensive tackle Jordan Davis, who has been
- 16:41Speaker 2: really a revelation of sorts this year, not only from
- 16:46Speaker 2: a conditioning standpoint, but from a tone setting, controlling the
- 16:50Speaker 2: line of scrimmage, tackling running backs for all negative runs.
- 16:54Speaker 2: He's gotten to the quarterback for a handful of sacks.
- 16:56Speaker 2: He blocked a field goal and returned it and save
- 16:59Speaker 2: the game for the Eagles against the Rams. He's been
- 17:02Speaker 2: all over the field. He is just an energy giver.
- 17:06Speaker 2: And I know that you look for if you're one
- 17:11Speaker 2: who votes for the Pro Bowl, you look for those
- 17:14Speaker 2: gaudy type of stats.
- 17:16Speaker 1: But that's not Jordan Davis.
- 17:17Speaker 2: But if you're watching the games, you, I mean, one
- 17:22Speaker 2: would be remiss not to acknowledge the impact that he's
- 17:24Speaker 2: having on all of these games. And I think he's
- 17:26Speaker 2: really come into his own. It took a little bit
- 17:28Speaker 2: longer than I think many expected, but he has been
- 17:33Speaker 2: one of the standout players on this Eagles defense that
- 17:37Speaker 2: is trending in a very positive direction at a really
- 17:41Speaker 2: good point in the season heading into the postseason. So
- 17:44Speaker 2: I thought Jordan Davis was snubbed, and I would also
- 17:46Speaker 2: say that Braiden Mann, the Eagles punter, is snubbed.
- 17:50Speaker 1: They went with Tresway, the Commander's punter.
- 17:53Speaker 2: He's now been elected to his third Pro Bowl, but
- 17:56Speaker 2: Braiden Man had better numbers. I think he has seventeen
- 17:59Speaker 2: punt inside the twenty over three thousand yards on his punts.
- 18:04Speaker 2: There's been a lot of times this season where you
- 18:08Speaker 2: just notice him his ability to get the Eagles out
- 18:11Speaker 2: of a jam and pin teams deep, and I think
- 18:15Speaker 2: it's sometimes that gets taken for granted. Now, only one
- 18:18Speaker 2: punter goes to the Pro Bowl, so it's really hard
- 18:20Speaker 2: in a deep field. But Braidon Man, I mean, if
- 18:24Speaker 2: he's not going to make it this year, after the
- 18:26Speaker 2: season that he is having, I don't know when he
- 18:29Speaker 2: would make it. And you always like to see and
- 18:32Speaker 2: again I don't have, you know, a horse in the race,
- 18:35Speaker 2: but you always like to see players who are having
- 18:37Speaker 2: good seasons get recognized. And I think that Jordan Davis
- 18:41Speaker 2: and Braden Man are two players that deserve to be
- 18:45Speaker 2: elected into the Pro Bowl.
- 18:46Speaker 1: But oh, I mean, who knows.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Who knows if the Eagles are even going to have
- 18:51Speaker 2: a chance to play in the Pro Bowl because they're
- 18:53Speaker 2: obviously playing and they have a lot you know, they
- 18:56Speaker 2: have greater aspirations this season, but just wanted to get
- 19:00Speaker 2: offer some some updates and some insights into some different
- 19:04Speaker 2: news pieces that are going on with the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 19:07Speaker 2: And oh and by the way, right guard Tyler Steen
- 19:11Speaker 2: won't be suspended for his scuffle that he was a
- 19:15Speaker 2: part of against the Commanders. And that was something that
- 19:20Speaker 2: I'm sure a lot of a lot of you were
- 19:21Speaker 2: curious about. And you know how the NFL tends to
- 19:25Speaker 2: tends to skew when it comes to that kind of
- 19:27Speaker 2: when you get ejected and things like that. When you
- 19:30Speaker 2: get ejected from games, you tend to not be available
- 19:33Speaker 2: for at least a game. But Tyler Steen will be
- 19:36Speaker 2: the right guard when the Eagles play the Bills.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Great news there, and.
- 19:40Speaker 2: We'll we'll see if there's any additional fallout from that
- 19:44Speaker 2: really crazy, crazy sequence there right in the Commander's game
- 19:49Speaker 2: when you have a take a chance to take a
- 19:51Speaker 2: step back and really recall the Eagles go for two.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Darius Cooper's doing a really nice job blocking. Actually I
- 19:58Speaker 2: wrote a coincidentally, I wrote a story about Darius Cooper
- 20:01Speaker 2: a couple of days before that game about how he's
- 20:04Speaker 2: really taken to his role as a blocker and the
- 20:07Speaker 2: work that he puts in to really hone in that
- 20:10Speaker 2: skill after not having much experience doing that at Tarlaton
- 20:13Speaker 2: State where he was there, he was their offensive, he
- 20:18Speaker 2: was their offense, so he didn't have a lot of
- 20:21Speaker 2: experience blocking. So I think it really underscores the importance
- 20:26Speaker 2: of that and the job that he's done behind the
- 20:29Speaker 2: scenes to really refine that area of his game and
- 20:31Speaker 2: become proficient at it, especially when the Eagles lost Johnny
- 20:34Speaker 2: Wilson and Ben Van Sumer in two critical pieces in
- 20:38Speaker 2: terms of how the blocking goes. But he blocks, you know,
- 20:43Speaker 2: he has a really strong block. The guy took exception
- 20:46Speaker 2: to it, sort of shoves Darius in the back. Fred
- 20:49Speaker 2: Johnson took exception to that. He wasn't going to stand
- 20:52Speaker 2: for it. He stood up for his teammate, and you know,
- 20:54Speaker 2: Jordan Mylotta was there, and then Tyler Steen sort of
- 20:58Speaker 2: got lost in the shuffle there and took on about six.
- 21:01Speaker 2: It was one verse six or seven, and tyler Stein
- 21:05Speaker 2: certainly held his own. The Commanders had two players ejected,
- 21:08Speaker 2: one of them being safety Kwon Martin and uh Oh
- 21:11Speaker 2: and Javon Kinlaw their defensive lineman, and tyler Stein of
- 21:14Speaker 2: course was ejected and you have you started to wonder
- 21:17Speaker 2: is he going to be available when the Eagles play
- 21:19Speaker 2: the Bills and they need him, But as it turns out,
- 21:23Speaker 2: he will be available.
- 21:24Speaker 1: No suspensions there.
- 21:25Speaker 2: So there's your updates on just some different things and
- 21:29Speaker 2: in Eagles Land and I will have more for you
- 21:32Speaker 2: based off of what Dick Vangio, Michael Clay has to say.
- 21:36Speaker 2: I'm sure Jalen Hurtz will have some interesting things to
- 21:38Speaker 2: say as well. And we're often running Eagles Bills week.
- 21:43Speaker 2: That's going to do it for this edition of The
- 21:45Speaker 2: check O Daily. I'm Andrew Decheco and I'll catch you
- 21:48Speaker 2: on the next one.
