unknown: Welcome to the Bubble Lounge.
• 0:16
SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Bubble Lounge.
• 0:17
SPEAKER_00: I'm Martha Jackson, and this week we're talking about the cameras quietly keeping an eye on us around the park cities.
• 0:23
  SPEAKER_00: What are they collecting?
• 0:24
  SPEAKER_00: Who can see it?
• 0:25
SPEAKER_00: And are they making us safer or just making us feel watched?
• 0:29
SPEAKER_00: We'll also recap another heartstopping Highland Park football game because apparently the Scots have decided none of us need a relaxing Friday night.
• 0:37
SPEAKER_00: But there's a new coffee shop creating some buzz in Snyder Plaza, and I have three Dallas events worth putting on your calendar.
• 0:43
SPEAKER_00: So let's get caught up with who to know, where to go, and what's happening around the bubble.
• 0:47
SPEAKER_00: Let's start with something a lot of people are suddenly talking about, flock cameras.
• 0:51
SPEAKER_00: Or as I asked in a recent video, what the flock is going on in the park cities?
• 0:56
SPEAKER_00: A few nights ago, we went to look at one of the cameras near Bodecker and Lovers Lane and University Park.
• 1:02
SPEAKER_00: You've probably driven past one without even giving it much thought.
• 1:05
SPEAKER_00: They're mounted above the street, they're fairly small, and they don't look particularly dramatic, but they are paying attention.
• 1:12
SPEAKER_00: Flock cameras are automated license plate readers.
• 1:15
SPEAKER_00: As cars pass, they can capture the license plate along with details about the vehicle, the time, and location.
• 1:23
SPEAKER_00: According to Flock Safety, they don't use facial recognition and they aren't recording audio.
• 1:28
SPEAKER_00: The purpose is to give law enforcement a faster way to search for vehicles connected to crimes, stolen cars, missing people, or public safety alerts.
• 1:38
SPEAKER_00: And there is a very real argument for them.
• 1:41
SPEAKER_00: If your car is stolen or if police are trying to find a dangerous suspect, you may want them to have every available tool.
• 1:48
SPEAKER_00: A license plate camera could help locate the vehicle much faster than officers simply driving around trying to find it.
• 1:54
SPEAKER_00: But then we get to the questions.
• 1:57
SPEAKER_00: Who can search the information?
• 1:59
SPEAKER_00: Can it be shared with other departments?
• 2:01
SPEAKER_00: How long is it stored?
• 2:02
SPEAKER_00: And how do we make sure someone doesn't use it for a reason that has absolutely nothing to do with public safety?
• 2:08
SPEAKER_00: Flock says searches are limited to approved users and that every search is recorded.
• 2:13
SPEAKER_00: The company has also been changing its safeguards and moving toward a shorter default retention period.
• 2:19
SPEAKER_00: But individual agencies can have their own policy, which means the important question is not only what Flock says, it's what our local departments are actually doing.
• 2:29
SPEAKER_00: What are the specific policies in University Park and Highland Park?
• 2:33
SPEAKER_00: How many cameras do we have?
• 2:34
  SPEAKER_00: Where are they located?
• 2:36
SPEAKER_00: Who has access to the information?
• 2:38
SPEAKER_00: Is our data shared with outside agencies?
• 2:41
SPEAKER_00: And how long is it kept?
• 2:42
SPEAKER_00: Those are the questions a lot of us are asking.
• 2:46
SPEAKER_00: This conversation is getting much bigger than the park cities.
• 2:49
SPEAKER_00: Communities around the country are reviewing their programs and some have turned their cameras off because of privacy concerns and the possibility of misuse.
• 2:58
SPEAKER_00: I'm not really ready to say the cameras are entirely good or entirely bad.
• 3:02
SPEAKER_00: I can understand why law enforcement values them.
• 3:05
SPEAKER_00: I can understand why people would like to know when their movements are being recorded and how that information could be used.
• 3:11
SPEAKER_00: Maybe both things can be true.
• 3:14
SPEAKER_00: Maybe the cameras are an effective public safety tool and we still need transparency, firm limits, and real accountability.
• 3:21
SPEAKER_00: So I want to hear what you think.
• 3:22
SPEAKER_00: Do flock cameras make you feel safer?
• 3:24
SPEAKER_00: Do they make you uncomfortable?
• 3:26
SPEAKER_00: Or, like me, did you not give them much thought until you suddenly realize they were here?
• 3:31
SPEAKER_00: Send me a message or comment on the video.
• 3:33
SPEAKER_00: An episode about flock cameras and the park cities is in the works and I'll definitely keep you posted.
• 3:39
SPEAKER_00: Now let's check in with Around the Bubble.
• 3:41
SPEAKER_00: First, Snyder Plaza officially has a new coffee shop.
• 3:44
SPEAKER_00: If you've driven through Snyder Plaza recently, you may have noticed that very long line outside of Kilo Coffee.
• 3:50
SPEAKER_00: It opened last week and then several people have asked me the same question.
• 3:54
SPEAKER_00: Is it really worth it?
• 3:55
SPEAKER_00: I stopped by and tried two of their unusual drinks.
• 3:58
SPEAKER_00: The Casilla combines black tea, coffee, and a caramel crisp.
• 4:02
SPEAKER_00: It sounds like a lot, but I really liked it.
• 4:04
SPEAKER_00: I also tried the calamanza matchi, which is a sparkling citrusy and completely different from a traditional matcha.
• 4:11
SPEAKER_00: And somehow they made this non-matcha drinker enjoy it.
• 4:14
SPEAKER_00: So yes, the drinks are really good and it's definitely worth trying.
• 4:18
SPEAKER_00: Is any cup of coffee worth standing in line that stretches halfway through Snyder Plaza?
• 4:23
SPEAKER_00: That may depend on how badly you need to be among the first to try it.
• 4:27
SPEAKER_00: Personally, I'd give the opening excitement a little time to settle down and then go see what you think.
• 4:33
SPEAKER_00: You can check out my first visit and see the drinks on Instagram at Bubble Lounge Podcast.
• 4:38
SPEAKER_00: And before we leave, around the bubble, congratulations are in order for 16 Highland Park High School students who were just named National Merit Semifinalist.
• 4:47
SPEAKER_00: They now have the opportunity to advance to the competition for National Merit Finalist honors.
• 4:53
SPEAKER_00: 16 students from one high school is an incredible accomplishment and it deserves to be recognized.
• 4:59
SPEAKER_00: Congratulations to all the students, their families, and the teachers who helped get them there.
• 5:04
SPEAKER_00: It's always so much fun to celebrate what's new around the park cities, but it's even better when we get to celebrate the people doing great things here.
• 5:12
SPEAKER_00: Okay, now we're moving on to the Scots report.
• 5:14
SPEAKER_00: For the second week in a row, Highland Park football gave us an exciting, exhausting, and slightly heartbreaking game.
• 5:20
SPEAKER_00: The Scots fell to Rockwell Heath 49 to 46 and another high-scoring battle between these two teams.
• 5:26
SPEAKER_00: Highland Park got off to a slow start and quickly fell behind 13 to nothing, but Logan Jones and James Flowers answered with rushing touchdowns, and Buck Randall connected with Beckett Lawrence for a huge 75-yard score.
• 5:40
SPEAKER_00: The Scots went into halftime trailing by only three, 27-24.
• 5:44
SPEAKER_00: Rockwell Heath pulled ahead again in the third quarter, and Highland Park entered the fourth down 41 to 31.
• 5:51
SPEAKER_00: That's where the comeback began.
• 5:53
SPEAKER_00: Logan Jones scored a second touchdown of the night, then Shep Pryor recovered an onside kick, and Buck Randall found Thompson Brainerd for a 12-yard touchdown.
• 6:03
SPEAKER_00: Suddenly, Highland Park had its first lead for the second half, 46-41.
• 6:08
SPEAKER_00: Unfortunately, Rockwell Heath answered with a touchdown and two-point conversion, putting the Hawks back in front, 49-46.
• 6:16
SPEAKER_00: The Scots drove down the field one final time and had a chance to tie it with a 26-yard field goal, but a problem with the snap ended the attempt and the game.
• 6:26
  SPEAKER_00: A heartbreaking finish.
• 6:28
SPEAKER_00: But there was also plenty to feel encouraged about.
• 6:30
SPEAKER_00: Buck Randall passed 396 yards and two touchdowns.
• 6:35
SPEAKER_00: Beckett Lawrence finished with eight catches for 181 yards, and Highland Park showed major improvement in the running game.
• 6:42
SPEAKER_00: The Scots are now 0-2, but those two losses came against talented 6A teams.
• 6:47
SPEAKER_00: They've scored 88 points in two games and a Friday night that they were a clean sweep away from potentially going into overtime.
• 6:55
SPEAKER_00: The record doesn't tell you how competitive these games have been.
• 6:58
SPEAKER_00: But close losses still count.
• 7:00
SPEAKER_00: Now we find out how this team responds.
• 7:02
SPEAKER_00: And they're getting that opportunity in front of the home crowd.
• 7:06
SPEAKER_00: This Friday is the first home game of the season at Highlander Stadium.
• 7:09
SPEAKER_00: The Scots will take on the undefeated Tyler Lions at 7 o'clock.
• 7:14
SPEAKER_00: And the captains have a message for the community.
• 7:16
SPEAKER_00: They want fans in the stands, they want the student section full, and they want everyone to stay after halftime.
• 7:23
SPEAKER_00: Yes, halftime is when the bells perform, but it's not the end of the game.
• 7:27
SPEAKER_00: The team needs that same energy in the fourth quarter.
• 7:30
SPEAKER_00: But before kickoff, the Highland Bells will host their 44th annual spaghetti supper in the high school cafeteria.
• 7:36
SPEAKER_00: Takeout is available from 4.30 until 6.30, and dine-in runs from 5 to 7.
• 7:42
SPEAKER_00: Tickets are$15 and dinner is catered by Amori Italian Bistra.
• 7:47
SPEAKER_00: There will also be raffle prizes in an online auction with more than 600 items.
• 7:52
SPEAKER_00: You can find tickets and auction information at supportthebells.org.
• 7:57
SPEAKER_00: So come early, have some spaghetti, support the bells, then walk over to Highlander Stadium and stay for the entire game.
• 8:05
SPEAKER_00: The Scots have spent the first two weeks fighting on the road.
• 8:08
SPEAKER_00: Friday night, it's our turn to show up for them at home.
• 8:10
SPEAKER_00: Kickoff is at seven and go, Scots.
• 8:14
SPEAKER_00: Getting your business in front of Park City's families is one thing.
• 8:17
SPEAKER_00: Getting them to pay attention is another.
• 8:19
SPEAKER_00: That takes time, consistency, and trust.
• 8:22
SPEAKER_00: I've spent more than eight years building that relationship through the Bubble Lounge, and today thousands of local listeners and followers tune to us for recommendations about what's happening in our community.
• 8:32
SPEAKER_00: Want to put your business in front of them?
• 8:34
SPEAKER_00: Visit bubble lounge.net and click work with us.
• 8:37
SPEAKER_00: Now here are three things worth putting on your calendar plus one event I'll be covering this weekend.
• 8:42
SPEAKER_00: First, State Fair Saddle Up is Thursday, September 10th from 6 to 10 at the Rustic.
• 8:48
SPEAKER_00: Think of it as the unofficial kickoff to the state fair season without having to wait in line for a corny dog.
• 8:55
SPEAKER_00: The evening includes live music from cash buyers, midway style games, and live and silent auctions.
• 9:01
SPEAKER_00: Proceeds support the Big Tech's Youth Livestock Auction and scholarship programs for Texas students.
• 9:07
SPEAKER_00: Tickets start at$125, and you can find more information at bigtechs.com.
• 9:13
SPEAKER_00: Next, Art for Advocacy takes place Saturday, September 12th at 6 30 p.m.
• 9:18
  SPEAKER_00: at 8,000 Ambassador Row.
• 9:21
SPEAKER_00: This is the largest single-night fundraiser for the Dallas Children's Advocacy Center, which helps children and families affected by child abuse.
• 9:29
SPEAKER_00: The evening includes cocktails, a seated dinner, and a silent and live art auction.
• 9:34
SPEAKER_00: More than 80 works of art will be featured, and the attire is cocktail.
• 9:38
SPEAKER_00: You can find tickets and additional information at dcac.org.
• 9:43
SPEAKER_00: And looking ahead to Thursday, September 17th, the Crystal Charity Ball will host the 10 Best Dressed Women of Dallas Fashion Show and Luncheon.
• 9:51
SPEAKER_00: This is always one of the major events that officially signals the beginning of the Dallas Falls social season.
• 9:57
SPEAKER_00: The luncheon celebrates this year's 10 best dressed women, with Nancy Nasher serving as honorary chair and Tavia Hunt being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
• 10:07
SPEAKER_00: The fashion show will feature Carolina Herrera.
• 10:10
SPEAKER_00: Funds raised by Crystal Charity Ball support nonprofit organizations serving children throughout Dallas County.
• 10:17
SPEAKER_00: And finally, I'll be attending a smaller community service event Saturday morning called Founding Fathers, which is the kickoff.
• 10:24
SPEAKER_00: It takes place at 9:30 until 11:30 at Highland Park Presbyterian Church.
• 10:29
SPEAKER_00: About 45 Park Cities dads and their children will work together to build bookshelves and collect books for families served by partners and opportunity.
• 10:38
SPEAKER_00: The event is supported by the Kershaw Family Foundation and Clayton Kershaw will serve as the MC.
• 10:44
SPEAKER_00: Clayton and his wife, Ellen, were recently named University Park's 2026 Citizens of the Year, recognizing their long commitment to serving children and families here in Dallas and around the world.
• 10:56
SPEAKER_00: I'll be covering the event and hope to speak to Clayton about why it was important for him to get local fathers and children involved in serving together.
• 11:03
SPEAKER_00: Watch for that coverage soon on Instagram at Bubble Lounge Podcast.
• 11:07
SPEAKER_00: And now it's time for Martha's take.
• 11:10
SPEAKER_00: There is one question you hear constantly in the park cities once September arrives.
• 11:14
SPEAKER_00: It's not how are you, it's are you going to this?
• 11:17
SPEAKER_00: No one has to explain what this is.
• 11:20
SPEAKER_00: You're simply expected to know which luncheon, party, football game, school meeting, store opening, or charity event everyone is talking about.
• 11:29
  SPEAKER_00: September starts innocently enough.
• 11:31
SPEAKER_00: You accept one invitation, then another arrives in the mail.
• 11:34
SPEAKER_00: A paperless post appears in your inbox.
• 11:37
SPEAKER_00: Someone sends you a save the date by text, and before you know it, you've agreed to be in three places at 6.30 on the same Thursday night.
• 11:46
SPEAKER_00: And every event has a different dress code.
• 11:48
SPEAKER_00: Friday night requires game day clothing.
• 11:50
  SPEAKER_00: Saturday morning, you're volunteering.
• 11:53
SPEAKER_00: Saturday night calls for cocktail attire.
• 11:55
SPEAKER_00: Then someone adds Texas chic, which usually just means boots that have never been anywhere near actual dirt.
• 12:02
SPEAKER_00: The hardest part is keeping track of everything.
• 12:05
SPEAKER_00: Some invitations are in the kitchen counter, some are screenshots on my phone, some are buried in an email box I'm afraid to open.
• 12:13
SPEAKER_00: And at least one important detail is hiding somewhere inside a group text with 47 unread messages.
• 12:19
SPEAKER_00: This week alone, I've covered a new coffee shop, stood underneath a surveillance camera, driven to Rockwall for football, and rearranged my Saturday morning to attend a service event with Clayton Kershaw.
• 12:30
SPEAKER_00: Apparently, I no longer live at my house.
• 12:32
SPEAKER_00: I just stop by there occasionally to change my clothes, and it's only September.
• 12:37
SPEAKER_00: We haven't even reached homecoming, partner's card, Halloween, the holiday markets, or the part of the year where every organization suddenly remembers it needs to host a luncheon.
• 12:47
SPEAKER_00: I love having so many wonderful things happening in our community.
• 12:50
  SPEAKER_00: I really do.
• 12:51
SPEAKER_00: I would simply like some of them to happen on different days.
• 12:55
SPEAKER_00: So the next time someone asks, Are you going to this?
• 12:58
  SPEAKER_00: Give me a minute.
• 12:59
SPEAKER_00: I need to check my calendar, my email, my text messages, the invitation on my counter, and possibly the outfit hanging on my bedroom door.
• 13:06
SPEAKER_00: September around here isn't really a month.
• 13:08
SPEAKER_00: It's a scheduling emergency with better clothes.
• 13:11
SPEAKER_00: Well, that's it for the Bubble Lounge.
• 13:13
SPEAKER_00: I want to hear your thoughts about the flock cameras.
• 13:16
SPEAKER_00: Do they make you feel safer or they make you uncomfortable knowing they're tracking vehicles around the community?
• 13:21
SPEAKER_00: You can also follow Bubble Lounge Podcast on Instagram for my Kilo Coffee Visit coverage from Saturday's event with Clayton Kershaw and everything happening at Friday night's first home football game.
• 13:33
SPEAKER_00: Come early for the Bell Spaghetti Supper, fill the stands, and as the captains reminded us, stay after halftime.
• 13:40
SPEAKER_00: And if there's something happening around the park cities that I need to know about, send me a message.
• 13:45
SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for listening.
• 13:47
SPEAKER_00: I'm Martha Jackson, and I'll see you next time in the Bubble Lounge.
