- 0:00Chapter 56 from the book of Isaiah.
- 0:04First, let's pray, Dear God, please be with us and give us
- 0:08wisdom and insight and let us be open to the words that you've
- 0:15given your prophet Isaiah and so that we can apply them to our
- 0:19lives and have a deeper understanding and appreciation
- 0:22for you. We ask for this in Jesus name.
- 0:26This is what the Lord says, maintain justice and do what is
- 0:31right, for my salvation is close at hand and my righteousness
- 0:37will soon be revealed. So I, I think this was obviously
- 0:43something that Isaiah was speaking to the people who were
- 0:46going to be going into captivity and it had an immediate bit of
- 0:52encouragement to it, but it also had a long term implication.
- 0:59Like I see this with an eternal perspective because when it says
- 1:05my salvation is close at hand in the book of Peter, he says like
- 1:11for the a day is like 1000 years to the Lord and 1000 years is
- 1:15like a day. And then it also states in
- 1:18Scripture that God is not slow, but he's patient.
- 1:24He's not slow in returning, but he's patient in his in this long
- 1:30time that we've experienced for us because he wants everyone to
- 1:34come to salvation. And so it says in my
- 1:38righteousness will soon be revealed.
- 1:41And I, I look at this like an eternal perspective and when
- 1:46Jesus the salvation is close at hand, a couple things.
- 1:52Jesus dying on the cross. I mean, that was the first part.
- 1:55That was what made salvation possible, was Jesus death on the
- 1:59cross. And then ultimately it, it will
- 2:03be when Jesus returns to gather his people and to bring them
- 2:09into God's Kingdom. So I think there's a, there's
- 2:14all these, that's the way this prophecy really works is that
- 2:17there are almost multiple fulfillments of this and things
- 2:20that keep every generation looking forward to the eventual
- 2:26arrival of the Kingdom of God. So blessed is the one who does
- 2:30this, the person who holds it fast, who keeps the Sabbath
- 2:35without desecrating it and keeps their hands from doing any evil.
- 2:41So this says that there is a blessing for the person who
- 2:45keeps the Sabbath, which is the 7th day of the week.
- 2:49And it's the day that the Lord set aside for to keep it holy,
- 2:56to acknowledge him, to recognize him.
- 2:58And I think that was one of the things that people needed to be
- 3:02reminded of is idolatry, to not have anything become more
- 3:08important in their life. And maybe because of our sinful
- 3:11nature, we needed this reminder on a weekly basis that put
- 3:15everything in perspective. Everything you have, everything
- 3:18you receive is from God. And don't forget God in the
- 3:24process. Don't get so busy with life that
- 3:27you forget God and fall away from him.
- 3:31And I think that's what the Sabbath truly is about, is about
- 3:36recognizing God for who he is, paying attention to it,
- 3:41reflecting on it, keeping connected to God on at a minimum
- 3:47a weekly basis. And also Jesus said it wasn't an
- 3:51obligation. It was, it said, you know, that
- 3:55man was not made for the Sabbath, but the Sabbath was
- 3:58made for man. And then Jesus is the Lord of
- 4:02the Sabbath. So those were a couple different
- 4:04things that he said. So he's overseas.
- 4:07The Sabbath day, the Sabbath day is a day of rest to rest from
- 4:12work. So we should be relaxing and
- 4:17reflecting on God like that is our time to be thankful for
- 4:23everything we've been given, be thankful for all the things that
- 4:26God has done for us, and to always do this, like every week
- 4:31at a minimum, to stay connected to God.
- 4:35And if you think about that, that's what relationships
- 4:37require, right? I mean, there needs to be
- 4:39communication. If you have no communication,
- 4:42how long is that relationship going to last?
- 4:46It you know it, you could come back to it, but you're not going
- 4:49to have that deep relationship if you are not speaking to one
- 4:53another. So if we are not talking to God,
- 4:56we're not going to have a deep relationship with him.
- 4:58We're going to be pretty distant.
- 5:00And when Jesus returns, we don't really want him to say depart
- 5:05from me. I never knew you.
- 5:06So if we're not communicating with him regularly, do we run
- 5:11the risk of that, that we are not, you know, keeping our eyes
- 5:17focused on him? And again, Jesus is the Lord of
- 5:20the Sabbath, so that's another thing.
- 5:22And a day of rest. So Jesus's death on the cross is
- 5:25ultimately what the Sabbath brings.
- 5:28Rest from the work that was required.
- 5:34All of the different laws that the Israelites had to obey were
- 5:39basically, you know, that made them fail.
- 5:43It just proved to humanity that no one is able to keep up with
- 5:49all of the laws. Like because of our sin nature,
- 5:54because of the corruption, we are not able to do what God puts
- 5:59in front of us. So God saved us with His own Son
- 6:06because He became the sacrificial lamb, the symbolic
- 6:12lamb who was required to die for us so that God allowed a life
- 6:20for a life, a substitute life and a perfect life which could
- 6:26who could atone for all humanity.
- 6:31So Jesus is the final sacrifice. He gave us a a day of rest.
- 6:36I mean, like, this is everything turns out in the Bible that it
- 6:40all points to Jesus. Just like if Jesus is the Lord
- 6:44of the Sabbath, that means he's very connected to the Sabbath.
- 6:47So maybe that could be why God wanted everybody to remember the
- 6:53Sabbath, the day of rest, because that's what Jesus would
- 6:57bring. So ultimately he's pointing us
- 7:00to Jesus and saying, you know, this is who I'm talking about.
- 7:05It's just I see the Sabbath repeated several times in this
- 7:08chapter 56. So let no foreigner who is bound
- 7:12to the Lord say, the Lord will surely exclude me from his
- 7:16people, and let no eunuch complain.
- 7:18I am only a dry tree. For this is what the Lord says
- 7:22to the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths, who choose what
- 7:25pleases me and hold fast to my covenant.
- 7:30To them I will give within my temple and its walls a memorial
- 7:35and a name better than sons and daughters.
- 7:39I will give them an everlasting name that will endure forever.
- 7:44So there's something about doing what pleases God, and again, we
- 7:49have to remember it. See, the obedience thing really
- 7:53ties into this. Because Jesus says if you love
- 7:55me, obey my commands. So we can't get away from from
- 8:00obedience. We can't be disobedient.
- 8:04And so I, I don't know what I was actually trying to say
- 8:10there, but there is a reward that God has.
- 8:13It's very clear that there is for what people do in in their
- 8:17lives, even if they aren't in a perfect situation like a eunuch
- 8:22is or but if they keep his Sabbaths and choose what please
- 8:27and hold fast to my covenant, there's a reward for that.
- 8:32So and foreigners who bind themselves to the Lord, to
- 8:35minister to him, to love the name of the Lord and to be his
- 8:39servants, all who keep the Sabbath without desecrating it.
- 8:45Is that just because we are those who keep the Sabbath are
- 8:49recognizing God and reflecting God on a regular basis perhaps,
- 8:56and who hold fast to my covenant.
- 8:59You know, the other thing is work can become idolatry to us
- 9:02as well. We can get so wrapped up in our
- 9:05work. You know, there are things like
- 9:07people are workaholics where you can just get so focused on what
- 9:14work would bring you. If you're looking for success or
- 9:17material things or recognition, you can get so wrapped up into
- 9:22work that that can become an idol that can become more
- 9:26important than God. So even something that, you
- 9:30know, there's one extreme where people don't even want to work
- 9:33at all, but then there's another extreme where people will work
- 9:37because that's their identity. And we have be careful and
- 9:41protect ourselves from that because God should be our
- 9:44priority. So we need to stop, we need to
- 9:47cease the work and take a day of rest and focus on God and be
- 9:54grateful to God. And because of Jesus being the
- 9:59new covenant, then I think we, it's clear it's a, there's a
- 10:06good resource that's going to do a lot better explanation than I
- 10:09about the Sabbath day. If you go to a website, they
- 10:13even have an app to got questions, gotquestions.org.
- 10:20And then you can put in Sabbath and then get all of these
- 10:22different articles and scripture references about the Sabbath
- 10:26because the Sabbath is obviously very important or God wouldn't
- 10:31have put it on the lips of Isaiah to speak about it.
- 10:35And it's very much tied to Jesus as well.
- 10:39So again, here we are in another chapter and it's pointing us to
- 10:42Jesus. But I think it's good to go
- 10:46there if you have questions about the Sabbath because it
- 10:48seems like this is something that's kind of being emphasized
- 10:52here. Like this is one of those
- 10:54benchmarkers. It says so all those who keep
- 10:59the Sabbath without desecrating it, and who hold fast to My
- 11:02covenant. These I will bring to My holy
- 11:06mountain and give them joy in My House of prayer.
- 11:11Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on
- 11:14My altar, for My house will be called a House of prayer for all
- 11:20nations. We hear a lot about that right
- 11:22now. There is, you know, this Third
- 11:25Temple discussion right now in the world, and it's been talked
- 11:28about for a long time. Israel's very ready for it, and
- 11:32we'll see if we're getting close to that actually happening.
- 11:35But it is supposed to be called a House of prayer for all
- 11:39nations, all nations honoring the one true God.
- 11:43So there might be some confusion when we start saying that
- 11:48there's going to be all these different religions worshipping
- 11:50God. It's not all the same God.
- 11:52Because the problem with all the religions is that they don't
- 11:58recognize Jesus. Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath.
- 12:01So if you exclude Jesus, that's not the intention behind this.
- 12:06So we'll have to see what happens, but the sovereign Lord
- 12:11declares he who gathers the Exiles of Israel, I will still,
- 12:16I will gather still others to them besides those already
- 12:21gathered. So this is going to be like
- 12:24there will be people from all nations eventually in God's
- 12:29Kingdom, but they're all going to worship the one true God and
- 12:33the Son of God and the Son of God will be the one that'll be
- 12:37king over all. And it will be a a wonderful
- 12:43time ahead. But before we get there, there's
- 12:46going to be some very severe times that we go through.
- 12:52If we are alive, we will be going through that or a portion
- 12:56of that. But just as Jesus said that to
- 13:02put your faith in him because he has overcome the world.
- 13:06So in this world we will have trouble, we will have trouble,
- 13:08tribulation, but to He has overcome it.
- 13:13So we put our faith and trust in Him and we look towards eternity
- 13:17and not towards our immediate circumstances if we are
- 13:20experiencing trials, troubles and tribulation.
- 13:25Now there's another part of this that talks about the wicked, and
- 13:29now we're getting to that. Come all you beast of the field,
- 13:34Come and devour all you beast of the forest.
- 13:38Israel's Watchmen are blind. They all lack knowledge.
- 13:44They are all mute dogs. They cannot bark.
- 13:48They lie around and dream. They love to sleep.
- 13:53They are dogs with mighty appetites.
- 13:56They never have enough. They are shepherds who lack
- 14:00understanding. They all turn to their own way.
- 14:04They seek their own gain. Come, each one cries.
- 14:09Let me get wine, let us drink our fill of beer and tomorrow
- 14:15will will be like today are far even better.
- 14:20So I mean, that's the end of it. So this is kind of that foolish
- 14:25optimism and that also that attitude of you only live once,
- 14:30like let's just celebrate for the day, make it a wild and
- 14:33crazy and fun day and you only live once with that kind of
- 14:37attitude. If you're not doing things in
- 14:39accordance with with what God says is righteous, then it is
- 14:45very foolish and you want to be prepared because Scripture does
- 14:51say that as in the days of Noah. So it will be when Jesus returns
- 14:57and people will be eating and drinking and being given in
- 14:59marriage and life will be going on.
- 15:02So it's you don't want Jesus's return to happen at a time where
- 15:10you are not putting him first. You are not putting God first
- 15:14and you are falling away from God and you're celebrating like
- 15:19the world in an attitude that's you only live once and you're
- 15:23not living righteously because Jesus will say, depart from me.
- 15:28I never knew you. So it's very important that
- 15:32people wake up and there aren't there are certainly if you want
- 15:36to call it Watchmen now that are warning people, but it also
- 15:41there's a lot of people who are not even churches and those are
- 15:44the shepherds who are not warning people about being
- 15:47prepared. We should always be prepared
- 15:49because you never know when our lives will go when God says your
- 15:54time's up or when we don't know when Jesus will return either.
- 15:58And so if we are we're not prepared, then we could have bad
- 16:04consequences as a result of that.
- 16:06So I'm going to read through the questions and answers for the
- 16:09study guide and then we'll conclude this.
- 16:12This will be a short 1. So why give observance of
- 16:16Sabbath such importance? In Hebrew law, moral
- 16:19requirements such as not committing murder are found
- 16:23alongside ritual requirements such as keeping the Sabbath.
- 16:28Isaiah referred to both here. He expected the people to uphold
- 16:32the moral code, to maintain justice and do what is right, as
- 16:37well as to keep the religious rituals the Sabbath.
- 16:41What will God do for the foreigners in the eunuchs?
- 16:44These verses look forward to the magnitude of God's offer of
- 16:49salvation. Outcasts such as foreigners and
- 16:53eunuchs will not be rejected in this new era ushered in by the
- 16:58servant of the Lord. Neither eunuchs nor foreigners
- 17:02could change themselves physically, but that wouldn't
- 17:05matter. Faithfulness to the Lord
- 17:08expressed by quote. Keeping the Sabbath will give
- 17:11them a secure place in God's quote temple and joy in His
- 17:17quote House of prayer. What does God's holy mountain
- 17:21refer to? This refers to Jerusalem,
- 17:24specifically Mount Zion, where the temple was located.
- 17:27God promised that those who had formerly been excluded would be
- 17:32given access to Him. The court of the Gentiles was a
- 17:36kind of symbol and foreshadowing of this, and it was from there
- 17:39that Jesus expelled the merchants, quoting the last part
- 17:43of this verse. And then who were Israel's
- 17:48Watchmen? The Watchmen of Israel were
- 17:50especially the prophets, those who those called to see what was
- 17:56coming and prepare the people for it.
- 17:59But since Isaiah associated them with shepherds, a common
- 18:04metaphor for political rulers, he likely had the entire lead.
- 18:09He likely had the entire leadership of the nation in
- 18:13mind. Sadly, these leaders were
- 18:16spiritually blind and mute, and they sought their own gain
- 18:21rather than feeding God's flock. So that concludes chapter 56.
- 18:27We will come back to 57 next time.
- 18:31Hope you join.
