- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Annie.
- 0:06Speaker 2: And Samantha.
- 0:07Speaker 1: And welcome to Stuff I Never Told You, a production
- 0:09Speaker 1: of iHeartRadio. And welcome to another edition of Happy Hour.
- 0:22Speaker 1: As always, if you choose to drink or whatever you
- 0:25Speaker 1: choose to do, please do so responsibly. Samantha, are you
- 0:29Speaker 1: up to anything?
- 0:30Speaker 2: My bubbly water. I'm keeping it together with my bubbly water.
- 0:34Speaker 2: What about you?
- 0:35Speaker 1: I have my red wine. I have my red wine.
- 0:39Speaker 1: But I have to say, we're doing kind of a
- 0:44Speaker 1: discussion revisit of our recent trip with Virgin Voyages. And
- 0:52Speaker 1: my good friend, Katie, who came with me as my
- 0:55Speaker 1: plus one, has been texting me at random intervals about
- 1:00Speaker 1: how much she misses certain aspects of it. And one
- 1:05Speaker 1: is that there was a very delightful happy hour that
- 1:09Speaker 1: we got to go to.
- 1:13Speaker 2: True.
- 1:14Speaker 1: It was nice. It was nice. It was kind of exclusive.
- 1:21Speaker 1: It had a pod situation. It was a structure that
- 1:27Speaker 1: was sort of bouncy in the middle, but we loved it.
- 1:30Speaker 1: We loved it. So, yeah, I've been thinking about it.
- 1:35Speaker 1: And at this point, we've been back for about a week,
- 1:41Speaker 1: I think. And it went well, I would say.
- 1:45Speaker 2: It did. I think it did.
- 1:47Speaker 1: It went well. There was a lot of anxiety on
- 1:52Speaker 1: my end. I don't know about you, Samantha, but I
- 1:55Speaker 1: was incredibly anxious.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Oh, I was definitely anxious. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:00Speaker 3: I think mine was like, anticipatory, like, I need to
- 2:04Speaker 3: get this, I need to get this, I need to
- 2:05Speaker 3: get this. And then dreams of not being prepared. Not
- 2:09Speaker 3: that I would fail, but not being prepared.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Yeah. And if you listen to our recent episode, that
- 2:16Speaker 1: was sort of a reintroduction in case people who discovered
- 2:21Speaker 1: us on this trip were listening for the first time.
- 2:26Speaker 1: We did do something that was a little ambitious, and
- 2:30Speaker 1: you will hear it if you haven't already. But we
- 2:35Speaker 1: read from three horror stories and then discussed them. And
- 2:41Speaker 1: the first time we practiced it, I remember thinking, oh,
- 2:45Speaker 1: I haven't considered that we can't stumble on our words
- 2:50Speaker 1: so much or it's going to ruin the whole.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Right, right. Yeah.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Right. Yes.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And bless Rima, our super producer, who was taking notes
- 3:05Speaker 1: and just said, just practice. You'll be good. Wonderful hype person.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Absolutely fantastic.
- 3:12Speaker 2: That's a great hype person.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh. I was asking Rima all kinds of
- 3:17Speaker 1: questions right before we went on stage because we did
- 3:21Speaker 1: a live podcast on this boat that was rocking. Due
- 3:26Speaker 1: to the weather. Mm-hmm. And I was like, Rima, can
- 3:31Speaker 1: they hear me swallow? What about... Like, I was asking
- 3:36Speaker 1: all these really specific questions. Right. And one of the
- 3:42Speaker 1: things that I've taken away personally from this trip is
- 3:48Speaker 1: that it's been a long time since you and I have.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Done something in public like this. We've never done anything
- 3:58Speaker 1: quite like this.
- 4:00Speaker 3: No. Yeah.
- 4:01Speaker 1: But you and I, we record virtually. And so there
- 4:08Speaker 1: was something that really got under my skin as in anxiety.
- 4:14Speaker 1: We have an isolation of work. Like we don't know
- 4:20Speaker 1: what other shows are doing. So when we saw what
- 4:23Speaker 1: the other shows were doing, It was really hard not
- 4:27Speaker 1: to compare ourselves to those shows. And I got, I
- 4:32Speaker 1: felt really insecure, I can admit it. I was like,
- 4:36Speaker 1: oh no, okay, that's not what we're going to do
- 4:39Speaker 1: at all.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Right, right.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Because they got a lot of laughs. And I was thinking, oh,
- 4:45Speaker 1: we're not going to get laughs.
- 4:49Speaker 3: I think, especially when we, the first show we attended,
- 4:51Speaker 3: I was glad we weren't necessarily sitting next to each
- 4:54Speaker 3: other because I have a feeling that I would have
- 4:56Speaker 3: been like whispering to you the whole time going, oh,
- 4:58Speaker 3: my God, oh, my God, oh, my God, oh, my God.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Yes. Oh, yeah. It was so fantastic. And, you know,
- 5:09Speaker 1: the thing is, I've personally known these people since 2010. Right.
- 5:17Speaker 1: And there's something about wanting people you work with that
- 5:24Speaker 1: you respect. thinking that your work is good as well
- 5:30Speaker 1: right and that course really got in my head about
- 5:35Speaker 1: look how good they're doing we've done this completely different
- 5:39Speaker 1: thing they're gonna give me like a pity oh it
- 5:43Speaker 1: was so good yeah and and i kept trying to
- 5:47Speaker 1: remind myself you're not doing yourself any favors comparing yourself
- 5:52Speaker 1: to them or our show to their show it's not
- 5:55Speaker 1: the same thing And we don't do the same thing.
- 5:57Speaker 1: And it went really well. You did. It really did.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Very proud. I also was really proud. And it was
- 6:09Speaker 1: a nice feeling.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:12Speaker 1: It was really nice because I have spoken before. I
- 6:15Speaker 1: have a lot of anxiety. I was worried that I
- 6:19Speaker 1: would come out and I just have these kind of
- 6:22Speaker 1: natural reactions sometimes where I shake. And I can't concentrate
- 6:27Speaker 1: and I can't, I know you've got some medication I
- 6:31Speaker 1: should probably look into. But I was worried that something
- 6:35Speaker 1: like that would happen. And I can't control that. But
- 6:41Speaker 1: it didn't. And I feel like I really locked in.
- 6:45Speaker 1: And I was, I think it's a benefit to us practicing.
- 6:49Speaker 1: You and I did practice a lot. We did a
- 6:52Speaker 1: lot of work. on this trip.
- 6:56Speaker 3: We're right dead yeah I mean like as fun as
- 6:58Speaker 3: we had and I do miss it I was like
- 6:59Speaker 3: this is the first time I've come back from a
- 7:01Speaker 3: long trip like this being like oh I'm kind of
- 7:03Speaker 3: sad being home because usually I'm like oh my god
- 7:06Speaker 3: finally I'm home but like I still have to tell
- 7:09Speaker 3: people no but it was work it was legitimately like
- 7:11Speaker 3: there wasn't a moment like oh this is so like
- 7:14Speaker 3: there was like it was fun there's no doubt that
- 7:16Speaker 3: but also every day we were thinking okay we have
- 7:18Speaker 3: to do this at least once a day you don't
- 7:19Speaker 3: have to lock in we gotta do this we gotta
- 7:21Speaker 3: sit with our producer we gotta sit with these people
- 7:23Speaker 3: like and try to work things out, it absolutely was work.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Fun work, but work.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Yeah. And, you know, we're incredibly privileged to
- 7:33Speaker 1: get to do something like this. But I have to say,
- 7:35Speaker 1: I was jealous of my plus one, at least, who
- 7:40Speaker 1: would send these pictures, and I'm like, oh, that must
- 7:43Speaker 1: be nice.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Oh, we're, like, stuck somewhere.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. But... It was really nice, and I think
- 7:56Speaker 1: it was fun seeing people that we have worked with
- 8:00Speaker 1: or known for a while in the wild. Like, you
- 8:03Speaker 1: would just occasionally run into them, and it would be
- 8:06Speaker 1: a fun, unplanned interaction. Right.
- 8:10Speaker 2: And we were such a small group, too. I think
- 8:13Speaker 2: it helped us bond.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Like, you were saying that Other producer, Max, was talking
- 8:17Speaker 3: about it being like summer camp.
- 8:19Speaker 2: I could see that because you kind of grow together.
- 8:20Speaker 3: You have made these memories that are so specific to this.
- 8:26Speaker 2: There's no other way to make a memory.
- 8:28Speaker 3: And there's never going to be a memory like this
- 8:30Speaker 3: unless you're back on the same situation, which is very unlikely.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. But it was really fun. We would
- 8:38Speaker 1: just run into people. You did the work, the gods' work.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Of making the reservations and making sure that we got
- 8:48Speaker 1: to see each other, eat with each other.
- 8:51Speaker 2: We will not be left alone.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:53Speaker 1: You were very, you were looking out. You were looking
- 8:55Speaker 1: out that no one would be left alone. And I
- 8:57Speaker 1: appreciate that.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Researched the hell out of that thing.
- 9:00Speaker 3: You did.
- 9:01Speaker 2: So many YouTube videos.
- 9:02Speaker 1: You did. And you went and spoke to like the
- 9:05Speaker 1: sailor services. Are you....
- 9:10Speaker 2: Just in case anybody needs IU on Valiant Lady.
- 9:12Speaker 3: She had my back and I saw her out in
- 9:14Speaker 3: the wild. And she was like, hey, did you get
- 9:16Speaker 3: to all your places?
- 9:18Speaker 2: Genuinely loved her.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Yeah. And that was really fun. That was really nice.
- 9:24Speaker 1: And we would kind of like puzzle pieces get moved
- 9:27Speaker 1: around about who you were hanging out with when based
- 9:31Speaker 1: on availability and scheduling and stuff. So that was cool.
- 9:35Speaker 1: I have to say, I live alone. This is probably
- 9:40Speaker 1: the longest I've gone in a while of not having
- 9:45Speaker 1: any alone time. Zero. Because I shared it with my
- 9:51Speaker 1: plus one, my room, and then you and I were
- 9:55Speaker 1: working all the time.
- 9:56Speaker 3: The only time I had.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Some was the night. with Scarlet, the night with the
- 10:02Speaker 1: party that we were being told we have to go to,
- 10:06Speaker 1: and it was fun. But I eventually shut it down
- 10:10Speaker 1: and said, I need to go shower. We have to
- 10:12Speaker 1: work tomorrow. That was the only time. Yeah.
- 10:17Speaker 2: I literally was like, oh, we just find an escape run.
- 10:20Speaker 3: I told my partner, we've got to go before we
- 10:23Speaker 3: get snapped into a different room.
- 10:25Speaker 1: We've got to go.
- 10:26Speaker 2: We've been out here for three hours. I've got to
- 10:27Speaker 2: go to bed. It's 11 o'clock. We have to be
- 10:29Speaker 2: up early. Uh-uh.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Yeah, you've got to have your fake excuse ready to go.
- 10:36Speaker 2: And I did find out, you did tell me someone
- 10:38Speaker 2: asked about us, and I was like, no, we're not here.
- 10:41Speaker 1: We had to work. We had to work. good things
- 10:46Speaker 1: to do yeah we did uh which speaking of i
- 10:50Speaker 1: didn't get to read any fan fiction the whole time
- 10:54Speaker 1: and then we got back and the amount of fan
- 10:59Speaker 1: fiction that had built up it obliterated my weekend it
- 11:05Speaker 1: was really it.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Was a wild time so really But it sounds like
- 11:10Speaker 3: it was a good time for you, right?
- 11:12Speaker 2: It was.
- 11:12Speaker 3: It was.
- 11:13Speaker 1: But it can feel kind of stressful. You know I
- 11:15Speaker 1: don't like a lot of tabs open. It feels like work.
- 11:20Speaker 1: And so I just saw how many tabs of fan
- 11:23Speaker 1: fiction I had to read, and it was a little overwhelming.
- 11:27Speaker 1: But I did do it. I have accomplished.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Proud of you.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Thank you. Thank you. I also want to shout out
- 11:33Speaker 1: your partner, who was a great sport when we were
- 11:36Speaker 1: teasing him, but also... Gave me and my plus one
- 11:42Speaker 1: Katie many a scare on our shared balcony. To be fair,
- 11:50Speaker 1: in his.
- 11:50Speaker 3: Defense, I believe Katie may have started this war. You're right.
- 11:56Speaker 1: And I told her, this is your fault. Everything that
- 12:00Speaker 1: has happened is at your feet.
- 12:03Speaker 3: Because the yelp that I heard while I was inside
- 12:07Speaker 3: was quite hysterical. In every way, because he and I
- 12:12Speaker 3: scare each other often in the house. It's kind of
- 12:14Speaker 3: one of the funny things that we think is hilarious
- 12:17Speaker 3: between us. And not often, but just enough. So I've
- 12:20Speaker 3: not heard that kind of yelp in a minute. So
- 12:22Speaker 3: I know y'all got him good.
- 12:23Speaker 2: I was like, oh, it's on. Y'all have created a monster.
- 12:27Speaker 1: I was not part of it. But I was victim
- 12:30Speaker 1: of it. Also, Rima got in on this whole thing. Rima,
- 12:36Speaker 1: by the way, had an old school... digital camera. Like
- 12:42Speaker 1: not old, old school, but old school.
- 12:44Speaker 3: I was going to say old school being like 10,
- 12:45Speaker 3: 15 years ago.
- 12:47Speaker 1: But I want those pictures, Rima. I want to see
- 12:49Speaker 1: those pictures.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I bet they were good pictures.
- 12:51Speaker 1: I assume they're candid and funny and wonderful. I did
- 13:06Speaker 1: want to say I was so anxious about this. As
- 13:12Speaker 1: I said in our kind of reintroduction episode, I felt
- 13:17Speaker 1: like a new woman after this was done. I felt
- 13:20Speaker 1: so much relief. I was holding it in my body.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I didn't even realize how much. But I did really
- 13:30Speaker 1: feel proud of what our team did. And that was
- 13:34Speaker 1: really nice. That was a wonderful feeling. It was amazing
- 13:39Speaker 1: to talk to the people who showed up, the questions
- 13:44Speaker 1: that they asked. I mentioned that a lot of people
- 13:49Speaker 1: came for their moms, which I thought was great. It
- 13:53Speaker 1: was so sweet.
- 13:54Speaker 2: It was so perfect.
- 13:55Speaker 1: And a lot of the moms would almost take me
- 13:58Speaker 1: aside and be like, oh, they're wonderful, aren't they? They're
- 14:04Speaker 1: so smart. They're done so well. And it was just
- 14:07Speaker 1: so sweet.
- 14:09Speaker 2: It was sweet. Yeah.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Yeah. So that was nice. When you put a lot
- 14:17Speaker 1: of work into something and you have a lot of
- 14:19Speaker 1: anxiety about something and then you pull it off, it
- 14:23Speaker 1: is a nice feeling. Yeah.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Yeah. I think, again, I'm a little anxious because I'm
- 14:33Speaker 3: proud of what we did.
- 14:34Speaker 2: But it's all in my head.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Like, in my head, since it's in the past, I
- 14:38Speaker 3: can only see it through my own memories. So I'm like, oh, yeah,
- 14:41Speaker 3: we did a great job. So I'm kind of scared
- 14:43Speaker 3: to hear the episode and be like, oh, why did
- 14:45Speaker 3: I do that voice? Or why did I sound like that?
- 14:48Speaker 3: Or I messed up here on that one. Like, I'm
- 14:51Speaker 3: afraid of that, which is ridiculous because that's too far ahead.
- 14:54Speaker 3: But at the same time, I'm like, oh, I might
- 14:56Speaker 3: not be prepared. I might just leave it up there. Like,
- 14:59Speaker 3: how bad is it? I might not need to do
- 15:02Speaker 3: a QA.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Y'all good.
- 15:05Speaker 3: Fix it. Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I think I was so grateful that I just made
- 15:11Speaker 1: it through that to me, that's a victory.
- 15:17Speaker 2: That's the win.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Yeah. I was very concerned about the whole thing. Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:24Speaker 1: And I mean, it's hard to parse out when people
- 15:27Speaker 1: in your life are telling you hey that was really
- 15:32Speaker 1: good you did a good job which my friend Katie
- 15:35Speaker 1: has been doing but I've appreciated it and it's something
- 15:41Speaker 1: that I knew she would be in the audience and
- 15:45Speaker 1: I wanted to do a good job in this space
- 15:51Speaker 1: that can feel so strange and isolating to have an
- 15:57Speaker 1: audience when we usually are just talking to each other
- 16:02Speaker 1: it was it was nice and I don't know I
- 16:09Speaker 1: feel like it went better than what even if there
- 16:13Speaker 1: are complaints or word mishaps I think it went better
- 16:17Speaker 1: than I thought it was going to go and we
- 16:20Speaker 1: were the closing act so it was a lot of pressure.
- 16:25Speaker 2: We were so like what is happening oh.
- 16:28Speaker 1: My gosh My stomach hurt. My throat hurt. The physical
- 16:36Speaker 1: symptoms of anxiety were setting in.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:41Speaker 1: But also... You need to get to a doctor. We
- 16:46Speaker 1: did banter at the beginning that we hadn't really rehearsed,
- 16:49Speaker 1: and I thought that went well, too.
- 16:50Speaker 2: I think so, too.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, so I would say... rounding up things that
- 17:00Speaker 1: we liked. I personally really enjoyed hanging out with friends
- 17:07Speaker 1: or co-workers, randomly encountering them, like I said, and also
- 17:12Speaker 1: listeners or new, I hope, listeners, people who came to
- 17:19Speaker 1: the show or watched it. That was cool. That was cool.
- 17:24Speaker 1: It was a little strange at first to be recognized.
- 17:32Speaker 1: But it was nice. Everybody was so kind. You were. Yeah.
- 17:37Speaker 1: So that was cool. I really liked that. And I
- 17:41Speaker 1: liked learning more about people we usually only interact with virtually.
- 17:50Speaker 1: That was cool. And the meals. The meals you planned,
- 17:53Speaker 1: that was fun. I think I don't We were working
- 17:59Speaker 1: a lot, but I don't recall a moment of boredom.
- 18:04Speaker 1: And also, everybody we worked with was great.
- 18:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. And Rima, we can't shout out Rima enough.
- 18:18Speaker 2: No, they are amazing.
- 18:19Speaker 1: They are amazing. Did the sound design. Really great hype person.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Talked us down. Was willing to come and do these
- 18:34Speaker 1: practice runs over and over again when we were like,
- 18:37Speaker 1: I think we need another go. We need one more.
- 18:43Speaker 3: And then many amounts of times we're like, we don't
- 18:45Speaker 3: know if this is going to match the soundtrack because
- 18:47Speaker 3: we don't know if we're too slow, too fast. And
- 18:50Speaker 3: then we got on the stage and it did the
- 18:53Speaker 3: opposite of what we had been doing the entire time,
- 18:55Speaker 3: the practices.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:57Speaker 1: I think because we slowed down.
- 19:00Speaker 2: So much.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Because we had been speeding up during the first story, Frankenstein,
- 19:06Speaker 1: which was the hardest story, I have to say. That
- 19:11Speaker 1: we slowed down so much that, yeah, the fairy tale,
- 19:16Speaker 1: which we had never missed the timing on quite so much.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Those were like, yeah, we're good with this one.
- 19:24Speaker 1: And we weren't quite there. But it was still fun.
- 19:28Speaker 1: That one was really fun. People were laughing.
- 19:31Speaker 3: Maybe it was me doing the witchy voice a little
- 19:33Speaker 3: too much in your reading.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I loved it, Samantha. I think you did fantastically. But yeah,
- 19:44Speaker 1: I just... It's been a long time since I've had
- 19:48Speaker 1: a moment of... this where I'm like, oh, that was
- 19:52Speaker 1: a good job. And I'm really relieved it's over.
- 19:54Speaker 3: That was a relief, like a full relief without too
- 19:57Speaker 3: much backtracking.
- 19:59Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, God.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Right.
- 20:01Speaker 1: It could have been this. I could have done this. Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:04Speaker 1: It was nice. And I thank you to the Sminty team. Yeah.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Thank you to everybody who showed up or listened. And
- 20:12Speaker 1: thanks to all you listeners who will hear the episode
- 20:15Speaker 1: and then you can weigh in and say what you will. Yes.
- 20:20Speaker 3: And if we do ever go again, you know, we'll
- 20:24Speaker 3: be like, yeah, this is, we'll be a little more
- 20:26Speaker 3: hyped because before then we were like, we're not sure
- 20:28Speaker 3: what's going to happen.
- 20:28Speaker 2: We hope it's good.
- 20:31Speaker 1: It's a very uncertain vibe. But it went well. It
- 20:37Speaker 1: went well. Thanks to you. the work we did. And, oh, Alex,
- 20:44Speaker 1: I want to shout out Alex, the person who's kind
- 20:47Speaker 1: of running the show at Virgin Voyages. She was great too.
- 20:52Speaker 1: And she was also a great hype person because she
- 20:55Speaker 1: was like, this is cool. Let's do it. Yes.
