- 0:49way to get to spend today, despite the challenges and
- 0:52tricky things that you won't have to do as well?
- 0:55We are reading through the book of John and we have reached
- 0:59probably the the theological climax of the book as we have
- 1:03been hearing more and more and more about who Jesus is and what
- 1:08he is here to do. And today his mate Lazarus dies
- 1:13and he declares that he is not just about bringing this guy
- 1:17back to life, but he is life itself, which is the whole point
- 1:22of John sharing this gospel. What a treat we have to enjoy
- 1:27the highs and the lows of Jesus humanity, his engagement with
- 1:31those he loves in this incredible chapter of this
- 1:35incredible book in our incredible scripture.
- 1:38So without further ado friends, let us enjoy this together
- 1:42reading John Chapter 11. A man named Lazarus was sick.
- 1:59He lived in Bethany with his sisters Mary and Martha.
- 2:02This is the Mary who later poured the expensive perfume on
- 2:06the Lord's feet and wiped them with her hair.
- 2:08Her brother Lazarus was sick, so the two sisters sent a message
- 2:13to Jesus telling him, Lord, your dear friend is very sick.
- 2:18But when Jesus heard about it, he said Lazarus's sickness will
- 2:23not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of
- 2:27God, so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.
- 2:32So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, he stayed
- 2:37where he was for the next two days.
- 2:40Finally, he said to his disciples, let's go back to
- 2:44Judea. But his disciples objected.
- 2:47Rabbi, they said only a few days ago the people in Judea were
- 2:52trying to stone you. Are you going there again?
- 2:56Jesus replied There are 12 hours of daylight every day.
- 3:01During the day, people can walk safely.
- 3:04They can see because they have the light of this world, but at
- 3:08night there is danger of stumbling because they have no
- 3:11light. Then he said, Our friend Lazarus
- 3:15has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.
- 3:20The disciples said, Lord, they're fierce sleeping.
- 3:24He will soon get better. They thought Jesus meant Lazarus
- 3:28was simply sleeping. But Jesus meant Lazarus had
- 3:32died, so he told them plainly. Lazarus is dead, and for your
- 3:38sakes, I'm glad I wasn't there. For now, you will really
- 3:42believe. Come, let's go see him, Thomas,
- 3:46nicknamed the twin, said to his fellow disciples.
- 3:50Let's go too, and die with Jesus.
- 3:54When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had
- 3:58already been in the grave for four days.
- 4:02Bethany was only a few miles down the road from Jerusalem,
- 4:05and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in
- 4:09their loss. When Martha got word that Jesus
- 4:12was coming, she went to meet him, but Mary stayed in the
- 4:16house. Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if
- 4:20only you had been here, my brother would not have died.
- 4:25But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask,
- 4:31Jesus told her. Your brother will rise again.
- 4:35Yes, Martha said. He will rise when everyone else
- 4:38rises. On the last day, Jesus told her
- 4:43I am the resurrection and the life anyone who believes in me
- 4:49will live even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and
- 4:54believes in me will never, ever die.
- 4:58Do you believe this, Martha? Yes, Lord, she told him.
- 5:03I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the
- 5:07one who has come into the world from God.
- 5:10Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the
- 5:13mourners and told her the teacher is here and wants to see
- 5:17you. Sir.
- 5:18Mary immediately went to him. Jesus had stayed outside the
- 5:23village at the place where Martha met him.
- 5:26When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her
- 5:30leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus's grave
- 5:34to weep. So they followed her there.
- 5:37When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said,
- 5:42Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.
- 5:48When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing
- 5:52with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply
- 5:58troubled. Where have you put him?
- 6:01He asked them. They told him, Lord, come and
- 6:04see. Then Jesus wept, the people who
- 6:11are standing nearby said. See how much he loved him.
- 6:15But some said this man healed a blind man.
- 6:18Couldn't he have kept Lazarus from dying?
- 6:21Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with
- 6:25a stone rolled across its entrance.
- 6:28Rolled the stone aside. Jesus told them.
- 6:31But Martha, the dead man's sister, protested.
- 6:34Lord, he's been dead for four days.
- 6:37The smell will be terrible, Jesus responded.
- 6:41Didn't I tell you that you would see God's glory if you believe
- 6:46so? They rolled the stone aside.
- 6:49Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, Father, thank you for
- 6:56hearing me. You always hear me, but I said
- 7:00it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so
- 7:04that they will believe you sent me.
- 7:07Then Jesus shouted. Lazarus come out and the dead
- 7:14man came out, his hands and feet bound in grave clothes, his face
- 7:21wrapped in a head cloth. Jesus told them unwrap him and
- 7:26let him go. Many of the people who were with
- 7:30Mary believed in Jesus when they saw this happen, but some went
- 7:35to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
- 7:38Then the leading priests of Varus is called the High
- 7:41Council. Together, what are we going to
- 7:43do? They asked each other.
- 7:45This man certainly performs many miraculous signs.
- 7:49If we allow him to go on like this, soon everyone will believe
- 7:53in him. Then the Roman army will come
- 7:56and destroy both our temple and our nation, Caiphus, who was the
- 8:01high priest at the time, said. You don't know what you're
- 8:05talking about. You don't realise that it's
- 8:08better for you that one man should die for the people than
- 8:12for the whole nation to be destroyed.
- 8:16He did not say this on his own. As High Priest at that time, he
- 8:20was led to prophecy that Jesus would die for the entire nation
- 8:24and not only for that nation but to bring together and unite all
- 8:29the children of God scattered around the world.
- 8:32So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus
- 8:37death. As a result, Jesus stopped his
- 8:41public ministry among the people and left Jerusalem.
- 8:45He went to a place near the wilderness to the village of
- 8:48Ephram, and stayed there with his disciples.
- 8:52It was now almost time for the Jewish Passover celebration, and
- 8:56many people from all over the country arrived in Jerusalem
- 9:00several days early so they could go through the purification
- 9:03ceremony. Before Passover began, they kept
- 9:07looking for Jesus, but as they stood around in the temple, they
- 9:11said to each other, What do you think?
- 9:14He won't come for Passover, will He?
- 9:17Meanwhile, the leading priests and Pharisees had publicly
- 9:20ordered that anyone seeing Jesus must report it immediately so
- 9:25they could arrest him. Jesus, you are the resurrection
- 9:40and the life. It's you that gave each one of
- 9:44us this life that we enjoy each day.
- 9:48And it's you who wraps your embrace around our spirit, that
- 9:53even though our bodies should die one day, that our spirit
- 9:57will live on with you in that home that you're preparing for
- 10:02us. Our Jesus, Thank You that You
- 10:06don't just love us now and hold us tight during this short life,
- 10:11but that this is only the precursor.
- 10:14This is but the small passageway that we walk through to come out
- 10:19into that glorious, glorious, everlasting Kingdom of yours
- 10:23that we will share with you and your people forever.
- 10:28You are the resurrection and the life, and we come to you and we
- 10:35listen to your life, giving words that flow into our hearts
- 10:39and fill us with your presence, your love, your forgiveness and
- 10:44your life. You are the best and we love you
- 10:50and it's all in your name that we pray.
- 10:53Amen.
