- 0:03Speaker 1: Hike and everybody. I'm Dan Horde, and thanks for downloading
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Bengals Booth Podcast the Hoo are you Hoo hoo
- 0:12Speaker 1: hoo hoo admission as we take a look at the
- 0:16Speaker 1: biggest plunge the Bengals have ever taken in free agency,
- 0:19Speaker 1: one that's caused many Bengals fans to excitedly ask, who
- 0:23Speaker 1: are these guys coming up? I'll spend forty five minutes
- 0:27Speaker 1: with my broadcast partner Dave Lapham as we discuss DJ
- 0:31Speaker 1: reader Trey Waynes, Von Bell and the other free agent pickups,
- 0:35Speaker 1: and then take your questions under the hashtag ask lap
- 0:40Speaker 1: and Yes, in case you're wondering, Joe Burrow does come up.
- 0:44Speaker 1: The Bengals Booth Podcast is presented by Prime Sport, the
- 0:47Speaker 1: official fan, travel and hospitality partner of the Cincinnati Bengals.
- 0:52Speaker 1: And here's a quick reminder that you can have the
- 0:54Speaker 1: latest edition of this podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet,
- 0:58Speaker 1: or computer by subscribing. It's the greatest thing since Yatzi.
- 1:05Speaker 1: If you've been looking for things to do at home
- 1:08Speaker 1: during COVID nineteen restrictions, perhaps you've forgotten about that Yatzi
- 1:12Speaker 1: board game. Sitting in the back of a closet. According
- 1:16Speaker 1: to the current owner Hasbro, fifty million Yatsy games are
- 1:20Speaker 1: sold every year, So there's a decent bet that you haven't.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Our family has been playing in recent days, and for
- 1:26Speaker 1: a game that came out in the early nineteen forties,
- 1:29Speaker 1: it still holds up remarkably well with just the right
- 1:33Speaker 1: mix of luck and strategy for players of all ages.
- 1:37Speaker 1: So here's the Yatze and rolling five of a kind. Now,
- 1:42Speaker 1: let's get to this week's visit with my broadcast partner
- 1:45Speaker 1: Dave Lapham Lap. As we sit down to do this recording,
- 1:49Speaker 1: the Bengals have spent approximately one hundred and thirty five
- 1:53Speaker 1: million dollars on free agents from other teams. What has
- 1:57Speaker 1: gotten into our beloved Cincinnati bengk I'll tell you Dan,
- 2:01Speaker 1: it's incredible. I mean, the overhaul continues. Uh. You know,
- 2:04Speaker 1: I think there's potentially five defensive starters in that in
- 2:09Speaker 1: that group, and obviously an offensive lineman that is going
- 2:13Speaker 1: to be a starter at the at the right guard position. Tentatively,
- 2:16Speaker 1: you know, you got to you got a starting cornerback
- 2:19Speaker 1: in Wayne's you have a starting Nicol Corner and Alexander Um.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I think Dray Kirkpatrick's future is dim in Cincinnati. I
- 2:28Speaker 1: don't I think it's going to be short lived. Um
- 2:31Speaker 1: William Jackson, I believe would be the other the other corner.
- 2:34Speaker 1: It's it's incredible vom Bell, who has made a lot
- 2:38Speaker 1: of plays in New Orleans Saints. I mean, he's a
- 2:41Speaker 1: he's a quality safety and he played well up in
- 2:43Speaker 1: Ohio State room with the road and all about. You
- 2:45Speaker 1: know his his contributions. DJ Reader is a high level
- 2:50Speaker 1: starter in the interior of the defensive line. You know,
- 2:53Speaker 1: I know, I know a lot of people are going
- 2:54Speaker 1: to be well, the only linebacker is Josh bynes Well.
- 2:58Speaker 1: You know. The thing is simple math. When you look
- 3:01Speaker 1: at the linebacker position in free agency, it wasn't as
- 3:05Speaker 1: deep as the draft is potentially. When you look at
- 3:08Speaker 1: the sheer numbers, almost every package three or four or
- 3:13Speaker 1: five defensive linemen, four or five, six defensive backs, most
- 3:18Speaker 1: times two linebackers. So sheer numbers say that if you've
- 3:22Speaker 1: got a prospect that you can upgrade in the defensive
- 3:26Speaker 1: liner on the back end where there are more players
- 3:28Speaker 1: on the field, go for it. Go for it. And
- 3:31Speaker 1: I do think that the drafted linebackers deep enough where
- 3:35Speaker 1: they can make us make some serious noise. I harked
- 3:38Speaker 1: back to at the turn of the century, nearly two thousands,
- 3:42Speaker 1: when you draft h Spikes, Brian Simmons both in the
- 3:46Speaker 1: first round, and Steve Foley, and the third round you
- 3:50Speaker 1: drew and Ross as a free agent. They redid their
- 3:53Speaker 1: whole linebacker position that year, and the coach was Mark Duffner,
- 3:58Speaker 1: who's now on the staff. So lightning can strike twice
- 4:01Speaker 1: with jeff Nor on the staff in terms of rebuilding
- 4:04Speaker 1: that linebacker core. A lot of it through the draft lap.
- 4:07Speaker 1: I want to go back to DJ Reader, probably the
- 4:10Speaker 1: most prized of the free agents. Four years, fifty three
- 4:13Speaker 1: million bucks. He's twenty five years old right now. He'll
- 4:15Speaker 1: be twenty six by the start of next season. I
- 4:18Speaker 1: went back to my old notes on the Houston Texans
- 4:22Speaker 1: and the last time that the Bengals played them, and
- 4:25Speaker 1: at the time I had written down based on something
- 4:28Speaker 1: that I heard or something that I read, that he
- 4:31Speaker 1: was like a young Vince Wilfork, which is basically the
- 4:35Speaker 1: guy he replaced in Houston. Is that a good comp
- 4:39Speaker 1: Is he potentially that good? Yeah? I think he is.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I think he's even maybe not quite as you know,
- 4:47Speaker 1: massive as Wilford as he was. I mean, this guy's
- 4:50Speaker 1: a big dude. I mean over three undred and fifty
- 4:52Speaker 1: pounds on a six foot three inch frame. That's that's
- 4:55Speaker 1: fairly massive. Wilfork as a house. But I think this
- 4:58Speaker 1: guy's more athletic in terms of his ability to pursue
- 5:01Speaker 1: inside out. I mean he'll watching him, he'll run from
- 5:04Speaker 1: the nose, tackle to the sideline and get involved in
- 5:07Speaker 1: a play, and very athletic. Like Wilfork was very agile
- 5:12Speaker 1: with his feet. It was hard to get that big
- 5:13Speaker 1: old bear on the ground. I mean he was very,
- 5:15Speaker 1: very difficult to get off his feet. And Readers that
- 5:18Speaker 1: that kind of guy too. And another similarity they have,
- 5:21Speaker 1: Dan to the point you're making, and it's a good point,
- 5:23Speaker 1: there are a lot of similarities is the ability to
- 5:26Speaker 1: push the pocket and to penetrate inside. You know, if
- 5:29Speaker 1: you if you single up on on a guy like
- 5:31Speaker 1: these guys, it's, uh, that's tough chore. I mean, somebody's
- 5:34Speaker 1: gonna have a long day, so he's gonna he's gonna
- 5:38Speaker 1: consume a couple of offensive linemen. And you know, now, okay,
- 5:42Speaker 1: do you a double reader? Do you double gino? You
- 5:44Speaker 1: can't double everybody who you're gonna double, So you know
- 5:47Speaker 1: it could help Gino and um the staffs that he's
- 5:50Speaker 1: on the field. It could lessen the load a little bit.
- 5:52Speaker 1: And you know, I know they're gonna be cognizant of
- 5:55Speaker 1: not him taking as many staffs as he did last
- 5:58Speaker 1: year and not having we're down like he did to
- 6:00Speaker 1: at the end of the last year. So I think
- 6:03Speaker 1: he's a big plus in so many ways. There's a
- 6:05Speaker 1: big ripple effect with Reader for sure. Since we've been
- 6:08Speaker 1: doing the games together in twenty eleven, the Bengals have
- 6:11Speaker 1: always prioritized two things on defense and trying to build
- 6:14Speaker 1: their team pass rushers and cover guys. We've seen the
- 6:18Speaker 1: money they've spent on Gino and Carlos Dunlap. We've seen
- 6:22Speaker 1: all the number one picks over the years on cornerbacks
- 6:25Speaker 1: in particular, So this really to me reflects what they
- 6:28Speaker 1: did in free agency. DJ Reader a great run stopper obviously,
- 6:32Speaker 1: but as you mentioned, a guy that can push the
- 6:34Speaker 1: pocket as a pass rusher, and then Waynes Alexander von
- 6:39Speaker 1: Bell plus Lashawn Simms from Tennessee who played on a
- 6:42Speaker 1: very good team last year. That shows you when they
- 6:45Speaker 1: looked at their struggles defensively over the past several seasons.
- 6:50Speaker 1: To me, at least, they went back to their core
- 6:52Speaker 1: values pass, rush, cover guys. I couldn't agree with you
- 6:56Speaker 1: more and the other caveat. I think to all these guys,
- 6:59Speaker 1: they played on recent playoff teams, So all of a sudden,
- 7:02Speaker 1: you bring that, uh, that successful mindset, that culture to
- 7:06Speaker 1: your locker room where you know, hey, I know what
- 7:08Speaker 1: it's supposed to look like. I was just in the playoffs,
- 7:11Speaker 1: and you know, here's here's here's what we need to
- 7:14Speaker 1: get done. Guys. Here's here's what I experienced. Here's where
- 7:18Speaker 1: we're a little deficient, Here's where we're okay, here's where
- 7:20Speaker 1: we need to improve. I mean, all those things I
- 7:23Speaker 1: think are valuable. And just about every free agent they signed,
- 7:26Speaker 1: you know, has been on the in the playoffs recently,
- 7:29Speaker 1: which I think is uh, it is not by accident.
- 7:32Speaker 1: I think you know that that's if there's by accident,
- 7:35Speaker 1: it's a very fortunate accident. They're going after guys that
- 7:39Speaker 1: I think have been on on football teams that have
- 7:41Speaker 1: experienced success and have you know, have have lifted, have
- 7:46Speaker 1: lifted firsthand, so they can they can bring it to
- 7:48Speaker 1: this locker room. And you know usually with that kind
- 7:51Speaker 1: of success, Um, it breads a good chemistry in a
- 7:54Speaker 1: locker room. And uh, reader, it's interesting easan Um. They're
- 7:58Speaker 1: both clums and graduates, and Easton knows readers parents. I mean,
- 8:03Speaker 1: he knows the whole family. It's it's it's crazy. You know,
- 8:06Speaker 1: you'll you'll get connections, uh that that with coach or
- 8:10Speaker 1: player or former teammates, you know, talking about the other players. Um,
- 8:16Speaker 1: it's it's it's very interesting. There's there's no doubt about it.
- 8:20Speaker 1: The last corner that they just sounded them trying to
- 8:22Speaker 1: think of Simms. Sims. Yeah, Leshawn Simms. His position coach
- 8:29Speaker 1: is now with the Cincinnati Bengals, So, I mean they
- 8:32Speaker 1: pick him up from Tennessee, another playoff team. So here's
- 8:34Speaker 1: Leshawn Simms, you know who's experienced the playoff success down
- 8:39Speaker 1: to Tennessee and they're you know, they like him, They
- 8:41Speaker 1: like him a lot, and he can he can play
- 8:43Speaker 1: on special teams as well. And this position coach, uh
- 8:47Speaker 1: you know, is now now with the Cincinnati Bengals. So
- 8:50Speaker 1: you have an obvious connection to Steve Jackson. You know,
- 8:54Speaker 1: liked him a lot when he's down there in Tennessee
- 8:56Speaker 1: and Leshawn Simms von Bell the connection up at you know,
- 9:01Speaker 1: up in a high state. He's got teammates, uh that
- 9:04Speaker 1: that are with the Cincinnati Bengals obviously in Sam Hubbard
- 9:08Speaker 1: and Billy Price, and so it's it is, it's it's uh,
- 9:12Speaker 1: it's very interesting, how you know, the thread is very
- 9:16Speaker 1: very wolving, very very tightly through the National Football League
- 9:18Speaker 1: A lot of times. Is Xavier sewer Feelo a significant
- 9:22Speaker 1: upgrade from John Miller? I'm not sure, you know, Um,
- 9:28Speaker 1: I thought John Miller was a pretty solid player. But
- 9:32Speaker 1: John Miller, um, you know, obviously had had an injury problem.
- 9:36Speaker 1: And looking at John the difference between those two guys.
- 9:39Speaker 1: John Miller to me is a beefed up three ten
- 9:42Speaker 1: as opposed to you know, Xavier's a natural three ten.
- 9:46Speaker 1: He's a bigger frame, bigger body guy. Um, John Miller
- 9:51Speaker 1: is pretty athletic guy, but so Zoe Xavier he can pull,
- 9:54Speaker 1: you know. Obviously, the Bengals the second half the year,
- 9:56Speaker 1: as we saw down in the running game improved so
- 9:58Speaker 1: much that they went to that gap, you know, pin
- 10:02Speaker 1: and poll schematic and having big boys out in space
- 10:06Speaker 1: leading Joe Mixon and Xavier can do that. He came
- 10:11Speaker 1: out as a second round pick out of UCLA initially Houston,
- 10:14Speaker 1: so there's another tie. He and DJ Reader or Team
- 10:17Speaker 1: Bates at Houston before he went over to Dallas, So
- 10:23Speaker 1: the weave continues. Linebacker Josh Bines will be thirty one
- 10:27Speaker 1: next year. He played pretty well down the stretch for
- 10:29Speaker 1: the Ravens last year and going back several years, he
- 10:33Speaker 1: made the tackle on Ted Gin to seal the Super
- 10:36Speaker 1: Bowl went over the forty nine ers several years ago.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Is he more or less a depth guy in a
- 10:43Speaker 1: group that didn't have much depth at all, or potentially
- 10:48Speaker 1: a solid starter in the short term. Yeah. They did
- 10:52Speaker 1: sign him to, you know, just a one year contract.
- 10:54Speaker 1: He's thirty years old. You know, he's on the back
- 10:56Speaker 1: nine obviously his career. But he run on that Super
- 11:00Speaker 1: Bowl team as you mentioned with the Ravens, and then
- 11:02Speaker 1: they brought him off the street last year as we remember,
- 11:05Speaker 1: and you know, he plucked them in and they had
- 11:07Speaker 1: a couple of inside linebackers and Ravens defense they brought
- 11:10Speaker 1: off the street to finish the season. They played pretty
- 11:12Speaker 1: well and he and Josh was one of them. Uh,
- 11:15Speaker 1: Josh Bynes, I think has you know, has something left
- 11:18Speaker 1: from the tank and you need you need an alpha dog.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Um this this group is pretty young at the linebacker position. Now,
- 11:24Speaker 1: There's there's no question about it. He's he's steady, he's
- 11:28Speaker 1: very instinctive, a smart guy. He knows how to play
- 11:31Speaker 1: to his strengths and and you know, to hide some
- 11:33Speaker 1: of these deficiencies as such. I you know, I think
- 11:37Speaker 1: that he's going to be the leader that everybody looks
- 11:39Speaker 1: to in that linebacker room because once again played in
- 11:42Speaker 1: the Super Bowl and um, you know, played at the
- 11:45Speaker 1: at the highest level you possibly can and it's a
- 11:47Speaker 1: big achievement. You get some credit, instantaneous credit with that.
- 11:52Speaker 1: There's there's no no doubt about it. So I think
- 11:55Speaker 1: I think it is a good edition. I think he's
- 11:57Speaker 1: gonna play pretty well. I think he's gonna really make
- 11:59Speaker 1: a rush to be a starting inside linebacker, you know,
- 12:02Speaker 1: for for at least the season, and with that one
- 12:05Speaker 1: year contract, there's high incentive for him to play well
- 12:08Speaker 1: and to see if he can get a bite of
- 12:10Speaker 1: an apple, a little bigger bite than just that that
- 12:12Speaker 1: one year. It's kind of like a show me something
- 12:15Speaker 1: type contract. And he's anxious. I think to prove that
- 12:19Speaker 1: that very thing. I do think they need to find
- 12:23Speaker 1: you know, they will in the draft, but they're they're
- 12:25Speaker 1: probably the biggest the trace to see now with Nick
- 12:27Speaker 1: Vigil you know, going to San Diego or the lah Chargers.
- 12:31Speaker 1: They got to get that Sam backer, you know, they
- 12:33Speaker 1: have to. They have to find somebody there, some sort
- 12:35Speaker 1: of edge guy, you know, that can provide some some
- 12:38Speaker 1: kind of pass rush as well as at the edge
- 12:40Speaker 1: in the running game. I think that's a that's a
- 12:42Speaker 1: big factor that they have to find, you know, in
- 12:45Speaker 1: the draft. And it would not I would not be
- 12:47Speaker 1: the least bit upset Dan if the second and third round,
- 12:51Speaker 1: if there were guys there that were worthy that they
- 12:53Speaker 1: spent both of them the linebacker position, kind of like
- 12:55Speaker 1: they did in the first round with Spikes and Simmons.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Then they came back in the third round here again
- 13:00Speaker 1: with Foldy. I'm not saying spend all your picks on linebackers.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I do think in my mind the two areas that
- 13:06Speaker 1: I really focus on in the draft would be linebacker
- 13:08Speaker 1: an offensive line. You know, to just add bodies to
- 13:11Speaker 1: compete and see who best man win kind of thing.
- 13:14Speaker 1: And you know it's so deep at wide receiver at
- 13:17Speaker 1: some point there's probably gonna be a wide receiver there
- 13:19Speaker 1: that it's like, oh, hell, I didn't think this guy
- 13:21Speaker 1: would be here at this point. We had him with
- 13:23Speaker 1: a grade around maybe two rounds higher. So you're gonna
- 13:26Speaker 1: grab that wide receiver. But I think all things being equal,
- 13:29Speaker 1: i'd really look for, you know, linebacker heavy in the
- 13:32Speaker 1: draft and an offensive line. What do you think happens
- 13:36Speaker 1: with Andy Dalton at this point? That's a that's a
- 13:39Speaker 1: great question. Um. You know, the thing the thing with
- 13:43Speaker 1: Andy is he's got playoff experience. And the other thing
- 13:51Speaker 1: is he went through this as a rookie. Thinking back
- 13:54Speaker 1: to twenty eleven, there are no OTAs, no mini camps,
- 13:58Speaker 1: and j Gruden, diet hell of a job with Andy
- 14:01Speaker 1: Dalton and Andrew Worth and dolmatop Peco. Remember they had
- 14:04Speaker 1: those voluntary workouts to get togethers. And Andy Dalton didn't
- 14:08Speaker 1: know what he didn't know in terms of the Bengal system.
- 14:12Speaker 1: And I mean to have him get up to speed
- 14:15Speaker 1: as quickly as he did that year and this year.
- 14:18Speaker 1: It's not a work stop. It's a medical issue that
- 14:21Speaker 1: is causing maybe a delay in the systems and installation
- 14:26Speaker 1: of things with young quarterbacks. Andy Dalton he learned to
- 14:30Speaker 1: quickly proof that he could learn it quickly, and I
- 14:33Speaker 1: think Joe Burrow could prove the same thing. But Andy
- 14:36Speaker 1: Dalton already knows it. So the fact that you're in
- 14:38Speaker 1: a situation so odd this year because of the coronavirus,
- 14:43Speaker 1: you do have a guy that knows your system cold
- 14:46Speaker 1: and worst case scenario, could go out there and perform
- 14:48Speaker 1: for you, you know. And I think the Bengal is
- 14:51Speaker 1: gonna be very very patient with this. I know the
- 14:54Speaker 1: knowing of Patriots are going to be. They have a
- 14:56Speaker 1: history of being patient. They're gonna try to get as
- 14:58Speaker 1: good a deal as possible if they're if they're truly
- 15:02Speaker 1: interested in Andy Dalton. And by the way, where is
- 15:06Speaker 1: Jay Gruden Jacksonville Jacksonville offensive coordinator? Maybe he says, all right, okay, minshew, Yeah, Well,
- 15:15Speaker 1: I know Andy Dalton. Like Andy Dalton didn't work out
- 15:18Speaker 1: in Chicago, where one of his offensive former offensive coordinators
- 15:21Speaker 1: resides now, but there's another one that's former offensive coordinator,
- 15:25Speaker 1: former head coach now down there in Jacksonville. So to me,
- 15:29Speaker 1: I think you have to be patient, you know, get
- 15:31Speaker 1: through the draft with the late reporting that's going on,
- 15:35Speaker 1: the fact that he knows the system so well, you know,
- 15:39Speaker 1: just the word. I don't think the worst thing in
- 15:41Speaker 1: the world would be if they keep him and have
- 15:43Speaker 1: a hell of a one two punch of the quarterback position.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Hell with the way the first round picks have gone
- 15:48Speaker 1: in the last four or five years, Man, I got you.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Don't you want to just say about eighteen thousand hail marriage,
- 15:54Speaker 1: nothing happens to Joe Burrow. But what if it does?
- 15:57Speaker 1: Then you got Andy Dalton. You know, I'm not sure
- 16:00Speaker 1: they would necessarily. I guess they could with all that
- 16:03Speaker 1: they've spent here in free agency. They may have to
- 16:06Speaker 1: trend that seventeen million dollar contract down a little bit.
- 16:08Speaker 1: But Andy may say, rather than getting waived, if if
- 16:12Speaker 1: you're if your Bengals terminate him, somebody's got to pick
- 16:15Speaker 1: in their a pain of seventeen million. So he may say,
- 16:18Speaker 1: somebody's gonna pick me up and give me a haircut
- 16:20Speaker 1: to be a backup. Why don't I stand in Cincinnati,
- 16:22Speaker 1: see if my haircut's not as bad. You'd be a
- 16:24Speaker 1: back cup, back up for a year and play that,
- 16:26Speaker 1: you know, maybe take a little bit of a haircut
- 16:29Speaker 1: in the contract and play out that year. I don't know.
- 16:31Speaker 1: I just think there's all kinds of possibilities on the table,
- 16:35Speaker 1: and I don't think i'd be in a rush right now. Tom.
- 16:38Speaker 1: You know, I certainly wouldn't panic and wave him at
- 16:40Speaker 1: this point in time, that's sure. The Jacksonville thing is interesting.
- 16:43Speaker 1: They've already signed Tyler Eifford and dark Quist and Art,
- 16:45Speaker 1: so that's becoming Cincinnati's South. But but if it reaches
- 16:49Speaker 1: a point where they're not going to pay him seventeen mil,
- 16:53Speaker 1: and that seems far fetched me considering how much money
- 16:56Speaker 1: they've taken on in free agency, plus the tag with
- 17:00Speaker 1: aj Green. So if they try to get him conceivably
- 17:05Speaker 1: to stick around for less, I wonder at that point
- 17:08Speaker 1: if he'll say, you know what, I don't care about
- 17:10Speaker 1: the money. I'm going to go to the team where
- 17:12Speaker 1: I think I've got the best chance to play. Yeah,
- 17:16Speaker 1: And uh, I think I mean, honestly, if I'm Andy
- 17:21Speaker 1: Dalton and I feel that Bill Belichick has some sort
- 17:25Speaker 1: of an honest interest, and I think he does. I
- 17:28Speaker 1: think Bill Belichick feels like Andy Dalton can win you
- 17:31Speaker 1: football games at the quarterback position. And uh and more importantly,
- 17:35Speaker 1: won't necessarily lose you football games give games away at
- 17:39Speaker 1: the quarterback position. If he feels that way in any
- 17:42Speaker 1: and these people in any feel that that's that is
- 17:45Speaker 1: the case, I do everything I possibly could to see
- 17:49Speaker 1: how that could be fulfilled. I mean, you know you
- 17:52Speaker 1: and and honestly, I think, as we know, the Bengals
- 17:56Speaker 1: are vocalized that a bunch of times, and I know
- 17:59Speaker 1: we both believe it. They definitely appreciate everything they aid
- 18:03Speaker 1: the Dalton has done for the organization and how he's
- 18:06Speaker 1: done it. Um So I think that if they could,
- 18:10Speaker 1: they would make it very fair and equitable for Andy
- 18:13Speaker 1: Dalton at all costs. Yeah, Andy Dalton is better than
- 18:17Speaker 1: Brian Hoyer. We don't know how good Jared Stidham is.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Maybe he's going to be good, who knows. But I
- 18:24Speaker 1: think despite what the Patriots have done with Brian Hoyer,
- 18:27Speaker 1: if they could get Andy Dalton on the cheap, I
- 18:29Speaker 1: think they would. And I think I think that that
- 18:33Speaker 1: if in fact, somebody could get him, you know, as
- 18:36Speaker 1: you say, on the cheap. And Okay, Jacksonville, in my mind,
- 18:41Speaker 1: I'm thinking, Okay, Bill Belichick really wants them. Jake Rudin
- 18:45Speaker 1: really wants them. Okay, then if they if they say
- 18:48Speaker 1: it's gonna Bill Belichick really wants them and said, I'll
- 18:51Speaker 1: just wait till they wave him. Well, Jackson is going
- 18:53Speaker 1: to get him before the Patriots. So at that point
- 18:55Speaker 1: Bill Belichick may say, I'll give you a pick, you know,
- 18:58Speaker 1: to make sure that I can get him before you
- 19:01Speaker 1: wave them. Um, you know that that could possibly happen,
- 19:04Speaker 1: and then and then he'd we do the contract extended.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Whatever he's gonna do. But it's going to be interesting
- 19:09Speaker 1: how it plays out. But I wouldn't be in a
- 19:12Speaker 1: rush as long as there's more than one interested party.
- 19:17Speaker 1: You know, at that point in time, you know, you
- 19:19Speaker 1: might say, look, we we are going to wave him, Bill,
- 19:22Speaker 1: and if we waive him, you're not going to get
- 19:24Speaker 1: him because we know Jake Gruden has an extreme interest
- 19:27Speaker 1: in him. He's not going to make it. U spark
- 19:30Speaker 1: down on the waiver claims as an only Patriots, Another
- 19:33Speaker 1: team besides Jake Gruden and the Jaguars could all claim
- 19:37Speaker 1: before he gets in the Patriots as well. I think
- 19:39Speaker 1: if he is terminated, I think there would be I
- 19:42Speaker 1: think a lot of a lot of teams in the
- 19:44Speaker 1: National Football League look at Andy Dalton as a starting
- 19:47Speaker 1: quarterback that one football games with. But right now he's
- 19:50Speaker 1: under contract for seventeen point five million bucks. Yeah, that's
- 19:55Speaker 1: a lot for a team that is thinking of him
- 19:58Speaker 1: as all right, he could be a great bat up,
- 20:00Speaker 1: somebody that we could plug in with no hesitation and
- 20:03Speaker 1: know that we could win games with him if we
- 20:05Speaker 1: had to. But that's a lot of dough for that guy,
- 20:09Speaker 1: including the Bengals, you know, Like I said, I mean,
- 20:12Speaker 1: he knows their system, they know what he's about, and
- 20:15Speaker 1: he would obviously. The toughest place to do something like
- 20:19Speaker 1: that is a place where he wants to start or
- 20:21Speaker 1: went to five straight playoffs. That's a tough that's a
- 20:25Speaker 1: very very tough shot to your ego, and it's much
- 20:29Speaker 1: easier to do it somewhere else where you don't have
- 20:31Speaker 1: a history already established, you know, I mean, all these
- 20:34Speaker 1: guys have a pride. Andy Dalton is a prideful guy.
- 20:37Speaker 1: He doesn't necessarily want to acquiesce and you know, say,
- 20:40Speaker 1: I know my mind and my heart, I know I'm
- 20:43Speaker 1: still starting quarterback in the NFL. I don't want to
- 20:46Speaker 1: be a backup quarterback to the place where I had
- 20:49Speaker 1: my first you know, my first seventy six games. I
- 20:52Speaker 1: was fifty twenty five and one and went to five
- 20:55Speaker 1: straight playoffs. And now in the backup when I know
- 20:59Speaker 1: I've got your left in my career as a potential star,
- 21:02Speaker 1: that's a tough pill to swallow, and you know, and
- 21:04Speaker 1: a lot of times, I mean, look look at Cam Newton.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Look how Cam Newton reacted with the Carolina Panthers. Now,
- 21:11Speaker 1: the Panthers obviously teased him a lot worse than the
- 21:13Speaker 1: Bengals ever think about treating Andy Dalton. I think Carolina Panthers,
- 21:17Speaker 1: you know, I think they could have let him go
- 21:19Speaker 1: a lot earlier. He could have had other opportunities. I
- 21:22Speaker 1: think he's pretty upset about it. But that whole thing
- 21:24Speaker 1: I think was mishandled. And that's the last thing in
- 21:27Speaker 1: the world I think the Cincinnati Bengals weren't do is
- 21:29Speaker 1: mishandled anything with respecting Andy Dalton. All right, let's open
- 21:34Speaker 1: this up to Bengals fans. I have a bunch of
- 21:36Speaker 1: questions using the hashtag ask Lap on Twitter. Are you ready?
- 21:42Speaker 1: Let's do it? All right? First question comes from Alex
- 21:46Speaker 1: Do you think the Bengals splurge in free agency was
- 21:49Speaker 1: a reaction to the media slash former players dragging them
- 21:53Speaker 1: through the mud, or a reflection of change within the organization. Yeah,
- 21:59Speaker 1: I mean I do think that, Um, the first year
- 22:03Speaker 1: that Zach was running as a head coach, his coaching
- 22:07Speaker 1: staff was assembled so late that I think that they just,
- 22:12Speaker 1: you know, weren't ready to hit the ground running is
- 22:15Speaker 1: as rapidly as they are listener. And I think that
- 22:19Speaker 1: was a little bit of a factor. Um. I mean,
- 22:21Speaker 1: you had guys that were signed, signed to the coaching
- 22:25Speaker 1: staff and immediately trying to catch up evaluating their own
- 22:28Speaker 1: players and trying to catch up on evaluation as of
- 22:31Speaker 1: other free agents. I mean that was you know, compressing
- 22:35Speaker 1: months of work into into weeks and days. And I
- 22:38Speaker 1: think I think that was a difficult time, a difficult
- 22:41Speaker 1: thing to do. I think that the that the machine
- 22:44Speaker 1: is so uh differently oil so much oil, so much
- 22:49Speaker 1: better you know this year, Um, that that I think
- 22:52Speaker 1: that that's been a big factor. And I do think
- 22:55Speaker 1: that the organization realizes after going two and fourteen that
- 22:58Speaker 1: you're going to have to make make a lot of
- 23:00Speaker 1: a lot of moves, a lot of decisions. But it
- 23:02Speaker 1: just wasn't good enough. Players weren't good enough. The overhaul
- 23:05Speaker 1: of the defense is remarkable. Like we said, five, you know,
- 23:09Speaker 1: five potentially five defensive starters in free agency, not not
- 23:14Speaker 1: counting the draft, and in one offensively. So you know,
- 23:17Speaker 1: when you're when you're signing guys, uh, and you're signing
- 23:20Speaker 1: guys that you think you're gonna make major contributions. And
- 23:23Speaker 1: I think the facelift is extreme. Uh, this this football
- 23:26Speaker 1: team is gonna look at hell of a lot different
- 23:28Speaker 1: than at the conclusion of last year. I mean when
- 23:31Speaker 1: you like, you know, we've we've already talked about the
- 23:33Speaker 1: guys that aren't going to be around Dinard Eifford Um,
- 23:37Speaker 1: the visual billing, scheduling. I mean, it's you know, it's
- 23:40Speaker 1: it's a it's a good number. So guys are guys
- 23:43Speaker 1: that have been moved on, some their choice, some others
- 23:47Speaker 1: b W. Webb has moved on as well. Uh, it's
- 23:50Speaker 1: they've definitely definitely overhauled it. And I think there's there's
- 23:54Speaker 1: a myriad of reasons. I think the staff is is
- 23:59Speaker 1: is uh working in concert better than than put together
- 24:03Speaker 1: so late last year. And I think the organization is
- 24:06Speaker 1: saying we got to do some things. Next question comes
- 24:10Speaker 1: from Ronald. Is Sean Williams moving to linebacker after the
- 24:14Speaker 1: Von Bell signing? Yeah, they played a lot of three
- 24:17Speaker 1: safety packages last year and uh, you know Feglam was
- 24:21Speaker 1: the third safety and now in my mind, Von Bell,
- 24:26Speaker 1: Uh it is gonna Von Bell and Jesse Bates will
- 24:29Speaker 1: be the primary guys. Uh. I'll tell you what, Sean
- 24:33Speaker 1: Williams loved the guy. It played tough, tough, soign of
- 24:37Speaker 1: a gun played hurt, I mean hurt badly. Leg injuries
- 24:41Speaker 1: when you're when you when you're playing on the back
- 24:44Speaker 1: end and you're you know, dragging a leg. Tough thing
- 24:48Speaker 1: to do. But he did it. And it just goes
- 24:50Speaker 1: to tell you if they didn't have anybody else they
- 24:53Speaker 1: could throw in there where they were on the back end.
- 24:56Speaker 1: So yeah, I do think Sean Williams can can be
- 24:59Speaker 1: that you know, that time sub package linebacker type guy
- 25:04Speaker 1: and do it very well. Now, the thing is that
- 25:07Speaker 1: this is the last year of his contract and it's
- 25:09Speaker 1: a five million dollar contract, So now you have to
- 25:13Speaker 1: think a little bit, all right, can we will he agree?
- 25:16Speaker 1: Can we talk about a new contract that maybe uh
- 25:19Speaker 1: you know, isn't isn't quite as prohibitive in terms of
- 25:21Speaker 1: dollars this year. If that role is going to change
- 25:24Speaker 1: and you know, maybe stay for a longer period of time,
- 25:26Speaker 1: I wouldn't surprise me if they asked him to come
- 25:30Speaker 1: to the table. And if in fact that doesn't occur,
- 25:33Speaker 1: now they have to make it. Make a tough decision
- 25:35Speaker 1: with respect to Sean Williams, because he's he's liked by
- 25:40Speaker 1: his teammates and liked and respected by his teammates, his coaches.
- 25:44Speaker 1: I mean, he's all about football. Football is very important
- 25:48Speaker 1: to this guy, and you know, you like guys like
- 25:51Speaker 1: that in your locker room. But I think he's gonna
- 25:53Speaker 1: have a different role for sure. All Right, similar questions
- 25:57Speaker 1: from Cullen and Steven. I'm going to specifically read what
- 26:01Speaker 1: Cullen wrote. He said with the Bengals saying they plan
- 26:04Speaker 1: to keep Drey and with all of the signings they've
- 26:07Speaker 1: made in the secondary, does this point to them looking
- 26:10Speaker 1: to move Will Jackson or does it point to them
- 26:14Speaker 1: running more Nickel or maybe moving a safety to linebacker.
- 26:17Speaker 1: And then Stephen basically was wondering if will was going
- 26:20Speaker 1: to be traded. Let me backtrack to the beginning of
- 26:22Speaker 1: what Cullen said he started out by writing with the
- 26:25Speaker 1: Bengals saying they plan to keep Drey. They haven't said
- 26:29Speaker 1: that as far as I know. I know Jeff Hobson
- 26:32Speaker 1: has written that it's possible and until they do something,
- 26:36Speaker 1: it's certainly possible. Paul Dayner Junior from the Athletic has
- 26:39Speaker 1: more or less said there's no way they're going to
- 26:42Speaker 1: keep Dre, not with two years and more than nineteen
- 26:45Speaker 1: mill left on the deal. So let's talk about those
- 26:49Speaker 1: two things separately. Number one, in your mind, any chance
- 26:52Speaker 1: that Drey is back? And number two, any chance that
- 26:56Speaker 1: Will Jackson gets dealt. I think the only way Dray
- 27:00Speaker 1: Kirkpatrick is back is if he agrees to come to
- 27:04Speaker 1: the table and doesn't take a hair Kurt, he agrees
- 27:06Speaker 1: to shave his head. I mean, they're gonna have it's
- 27:10Speaker 1: gonna have to be a hell of a lot less
- 27:12Speaker 1: than that ten million that he's you know, come to
- 27:14Speaker 1: it the cap. I think it is this year, um
- 27:17Speaker 1: Will Jackson. I think I think in my mind the
- 27:20Speaker 1: guy that's more vulnerable UH is Dray Kirkpatrick and Will Jackson.
- 27:25Speaker 1: I do think that you know that they still value uh.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Will Jackson's abilities at this stage a little bit higher
- 27:33Speaker 1: than Drey's, and both of them had their injury issues.
- 27:36Speaker 1: I mean, both of us their share of time, but
- 27:39Speaker 1: will Will has been a little bit more durable you
- 27:42Speaker 1: know lately. Um so, I yeah, I do believe that
- 27:45Speaker 1: that Drey is probably the more vulnerable of the two.
- 27:49Speaker 1: And uh, I don't know what kind of trademarket the'd
- 27:52Speaker 1: be out there, um, you know, for for you either one.
- 27:55Speaker 1: I think teams once, once, teams around the league start
- 27:58Speaker 1: to see what you've done and how that affects other players.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Like we talked about, it's like they're not going to shoot.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Like the Andy Dalvon situation, a team trades for him,
- 28:09Speaker 1: they have to give up capital in the former drafted
- 28:12Speaker 1: plus they have to take on the contract. You wait
- 28:14Speaker 1: for a team to waive a guy, there's no compensation
- 28:18Speaker 1: and you can redo the contract. You know, have to
- 28:20Speaker 1: absorb the contract you don't take the contract on. So
- 28:23Speaker 1: it'll be interesting to see how it all unfolds. Will
- 28:26Speaker 1: Jackson is younger, and Will also has the one great
- 28:31Speaker 1: season on his resume. He has not been able to
- 28:34Speaker 1: back it up since unfortunately, but at least the one
- 28:38Speaker 1: year he showed the potential of being one of the
- 28:40Speaker 1: better cover corners in the NFL, Whereas Dre has had
- 28:45Speaker 1: his moments. I would say throughout his career he's certainly
- 28:48Speaker 1: been above average, but there has not been a season
- 28:51Speaker 1: where you thought, all right, this guy could be one
- 28:53Speaker 1: of the best in the league. I think that I
- 28:56Speaker 1: agree with you, Dan, and I think if you're paying
- 28:58Speaker 1: cornerbacks and eleven million bucks a year, you expect them
- 29:02Speaker 1: to tackle and you expect them to find the football.
- 29:05Speaker 1: And both of them have had their issues in both
- 29:07Speaker 1: those areas. I mean, you know a lot of times
- 29:10Speaker 1: it's like you're you're in position, find the ball and
- 29:14Speaker 1: then you know that's I think that's what that's what
- 29:16Speaker 1: they've done. Um. You know, in terms of a lot
- 29:19Speaker 1: of the people that they signed on the back end,
- 29:21Speaker 1: they'll tackle, Like we talked about, uh Trey Waynes and
- 29:26Speaker 1: McKenzie Alexander, who is there? What team are there with Minnesota?
- 29:30Speaker 1: Mike Sander. You don't tackle, you don't play. These guys
- 29:33Speaker 1: will tackle, Von Bell will tackle um and then ball skills,
- 29:38Speaker 1: you know, find the football, making a play on Winston
- 29:41Speaker 1: Rome was a guy they signed from the CFLs the intersection.
- 29:43Speaker 1: Leabel in in that league. So and and you know
- 29:47Speaker 1: Trey Trey Waynes can find the football. And this really
- 29:51Speaker 1: have to be improved is turned taking taking the football away.
- 29:55Speaker 1: When the ball, when you have your chance to make
- 29:58Speaker 1: a play on the football, find it and make the play.
- 30:01Speaker 1: And when you have to get somebody on the ground,
- 30:04Speaker 1: get them on the ground. No miss tackles or minimize
- 30:08Speaker 1: miss tackles. There are far too many miss tackles last year.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Next question comes from Brian. With all of the new faces,
- 30:17Speaker 1: how does coach Taylor expect to build a team when
- 30:20Speaker 1: they can't even be in the same room. Yeah, that's
- 30:23Speaker 1: that's gonna be. That's the interesting part of it. And
- 30:26Speaker 1: you know, and you're talking about a rookie quarterback that
- 30:31Speaker 1: hasn't experienced the NFL at all. At least these guys
- 30:34Speaker 1: have played in the National Football League and they do
- 30:37Speaker 1: have experience, you know, at the highest level. Um and
- 30:41Speaker 1: and again they've they've been I'd rather have guys that
- 30:45Speaker 1: that I'm going to have a short period of time
- 30:47Speaker 1: to build a culture in a chemistry those two important
- 30:51Speaker 1: C words the most important. You know, you want to
- 30:53Speaker 1: be a C square team. Culture and chemistry is huge. Guys,
- 30:58Speaker 1: that come from winning programs already have that. You know,
- 31:01Speaker 1: they they they've they've experienced it, they've assimilated it. It's
- 31:04Speaker 1: part of their DNA. So I think that's a that's
- 31:07Speaker 1: a plus for a short period of time to put
- 31:09Speaker 1: it all together as you've got guys that that know
- 31:12Speaker 1: what you have to do, the sacrifice you have to make,
- 31:15Speaker 1: and uh, you know, the the old corny you know,
- 31:18Speaker 1: it's it's it's it's we us, it's not. I mean,
- 31:21Speaker 1: you have guys that that have have seen that happen,
- 31:24Speaker 1: and as a result of seeing an experience in it,
- 31:27Speaker 1: they taste the sweet nectar of a playoff, you know,
- 31:30Speaker 1: playoff appearances. I think that's a big plus when you
- 31:33Speaker 1: look at this, uh, you know, potentially shortened time frame,
- 31:37Speaker 1: all right, similar questions from Eric and Jerry. Eric writes,
- 31:41Speaker 1: even though you have stated stated previously you're all in
- 31:44Speaker 1: on Joe Burrow, would you at least listen to offers
- 31:47Speaker 1: from other teams? And then Jerry's a little bit more specific.
- 31:50Speaker 1: He said, would you trade the number one pick if
- 31:53Speaker 1: Miami offered its first six picks and Miami's first six
- 31:59Speaker 1: picks or three first rounders, two second rounders, in a third.
- 32:03Speaker 1: So what do you think of those two questions? Man?
- 32:06Speaker 1: Two three first rounders, two seconds and a third? How
- 32:09Speaker 1: do you not not think about pulling the trigger on
- 32:12Speaker 1: that bad point and you're you're falling to the to
- 32:15Speaker 1: the number five spot. Um, you know at that point
- 32:18Speaker 1: in time, are you still in the marketplace for TA
- 32:22Speaker 1: Probably not. You know they're talking about you're gonna have
- 32:24Speaker 1: to move up to number three and maybe even number
- 32:27Speaker 1: two to make sure a number three doesn't get them.
- 32:30Speaker 1: I mean, um, basically, what you're doing to move back
- 32:35Speaker 1: to the at least to the Miami's number five spot.
- 32:38Speaker 1: You're you're potentially saying, I'm not just giving up on
- 32:42Speaker 1: Joe Barrow, I'm giving up on two twa as well.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Uh Am, I okay with you know, with with other guys,
- 32:49Speaker 1: and you know, okay, if you're if you're okay with
- 32:52Speaker 1: Justin Herbert, and then you can get all these draft kicks.
- 32:56Speaker 1: I guess you got to think about it a little bit. Um.
- 32:59Speaker 1: Obviously you'd have to do your due diligence and just
- 33:03Speaker 1: out of you know, you can't just say I don't
- 33:05Speaker 1: even want to think about it. You know, I'm done.
- 33:07Speaker 1: Everything has its price, but I do think, and I know,
- 33:11Speaker 1: I know a lot of people are are. You know,
- 33:14Speaker 1: the Joe Ball's arm strength in a small hand is
- 33:16Speaker 1: going to be the two things people beat the hell
- 33:18Speaker 1: out of him about. And the fact that he had
- 33:21Speaker 1: one successful year. And why did that one successful year happen? Well,
- 33:25Speaker 1: there's probably a lot of reasons that happened, but the
- 33:27Speaker 1: fact is it did. And it wasn't just successful. It
- 33:30Speaker 1: might have been the greatest year and sure, most people's opinion,
- 33:34Speaker 1: including mine, the best year the college quarterback ever had
- 33:38Speaker 1: in NCAA history. And you know the thing about him, Dan,
- 33:41Speaker 1: it is more to hear about him. He's not just
- 33:44Speaker 1: a competitive football player. To dude, it's a competitive learner.
- 33:48Speaker 1: I mean, he has an insatiable appetite for football and
- 33:54Speaker 1: he cannot get enough of it. He cannot learn enough
- 33:57Speaker 1: of it. And the great ones, great Peyton Manning, you know,
- 34:01Speaker 1: not not the greatest arms in the National Football League,
- 34:05Speaker 1: but men's men's men's unbelievable minds for the game of football.
- 34:11Speaker 1: And you know you can, you can. You'll find guys
- 34:13Speaker 1: that are gonna be bigger, stronger, throughout, harder, maybe run
- 34:17Speaker 1: faster than than those guys. All of them. But nobody,
- 34:21Speaker 1: nobody is gonna work harder to be prepared mentally and
- 34:26Speaker 1: be able to comprehend and assimilate the game of football
- 34:30Speaker 1: better than those guys. I put Joe Burrow in that
- 34:32Speaker 1: classroom when I'm hearing, I mean, he is just he's
- 34:35Speaker 1: a competitive learner. You can't have enough competitive learners man,
- 34:39Speaker 1: particularly at that position. And I mean Peyton Manning. You know,
- 34:43Speaker 1: his his arm would be categorized as a pop gun
- 34:46Speaker 1: compared to a lot of guys. But look at look
- 34:48Speaker 1: at how he played, uh, Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Joe
- 34:52Speaker 1: Montana did not you know, I watched Joe Montana play
- 34:55Speaker 1: a lot of a lot of games, and you know
- 34:58Speaker 1: his arm arm was adequate, But it wasn't a Howard
- 35:00Speaker 1: strip with Joe Montana mensa mensa menza and a guy
- 35:04Speaker 1: like DoLS, you know, feeding him all this information. I mean,
- 35:08Speaker 1: those are those are the kind of things that you
- 35:11Speaker 1: that you got to have. And in my mind, it's
- 35:13Speaker 1: a tiebreaker. And I think T is strong in those
- 35:17Speaker 1: areas as well. But everything I'm hearing and reading about
- 35:19Speaker 1: Joe Burrow is man, he's just he's off the charts,
- 35:23Speaker 1: all right. I was going to save this next one
- 35:25Speaker 1: for last, but after what you just said about Joe Burrow,
- 35:28Speaker 1: I'm going to stick this in right now because this
- 35:30Speaker 1: comes from a J. Smith. He's a very passionate Bengals
- 35:34Speaker 1: fan who is also very passionately against drafting Joe Burrow.
- 35:39Speaker 1: In fact, he goes so far overboard that I can't
- 35:43Speaker 1: tell if he's like pulling a skip Bayless lebron Stinks
- 35:47Speaker 1: kind of take to get a reaction, or if he
- 35:50Speaker 1: really means it. But this is what AJ wrote with
- 35:53Speaker 1: lap recommend a quarterback with one great season, small hands,
- 35:59Speaker 1: below the average arm strength, and more seasons is a
- 36:02Speaker 1: bench warmer than a performer. You can't work him out.
- 36:06Speaker 1: He sat for the combine in the Senior Bowl. Do
- 36:09Speaker 1: you risk thirty six million plus on a prospect like that? Well,
- 36:15Speaker 1: I guess you know, what does he does? He totally
- 36:18Speaker 1: disregard with those nine inch hands and the you know,
- 36:22Speaker 1: the weak arm and everything. What the personify season he
- 36:26Speaker 1: did have? You know, I mean it's you know, and
- 36:30Speaker 1: like I said, there's there's a there's a lot, there's
- 36:32Speaker 1: a lot of weak I mean, Joe Brady's a reason
- 36:34Speaker 1: Joe Brady obviously got a coordinate a job with the
- 36:37Speaker 1: Carolina Panthers. He had great weapons, so did TA. You
- 36:41Speaker 1: don't think TWA had great weapons at Alabama? I mean
- 36:44Speaker 1: dog sometimes? Okay, Tom Tom Brady, how do how do
- 36:49Speaker 1: you put Jet Tom Brady to have the career that
- 36:51Speaker 1: he has has had in the National Football League. You
- 36:54Speaker 1: can't until you get your opportunity. And finally Joe Barrow
- 36:58Speaker 1: got his opportunity. What what do you are? It's an
- 37:00Speaker 1: ask for It's an opportunity. And when opportunity knocks, you
- 37:03Speaker 1: open the door. He normally opened it. He kicked it in.
- 37:07Speaker 1: I mean, greatest greatest season in college football in history,
- 37:11Speaker 1: and I always talked about it before. You look at
- 37:13Speaker 1: the college, the College, the SEC championship game, and then
- 37:17Speaker 1: the two games in the in the playoffs, including in
- 37:20Speaker 1: the National Championship game in the NCAA. Those three games,
- 37:24Speaker 1: sixteen touchdowns rushed to two more, no fumbles, no interceptions.
- 37:30Speaker 1: All I can say with those nine inch hands, he
- 37:32Speaker 1: didn't turn it over. He has two hands on the football.
- 37:37Speaker 1: He knows, he knows how to protect the football. And
- 37:40Speaker 1: this is playing at the highest level of football in
- 37:42Speaker 1: the SEC. And then the best teams you know, in
- 37:45Speaker 1: the in the tournament to win the NC Double A championship.
- 37:48Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean, I've got people that know
- 37:51Speaker 1: a lot more about quarterback in the need that I've
- 37:53Speaker 1: talked to. When they watched Jafe, they say it might
- 37:54Speaker 1: have been the perfect, most perfect season they've ever seen
- 37:59Speaker 1: a quarterback hal h at any level of football, and that,
- 38:02Speaker 1: you know, that's saying something. Sorry to disappoint you. Aj
- 38:05Speaker 1: Lap remains all in on Joe Burrow. All right, We've
- 38:10Speaker 1: got a bunch of questions from people about the offensive line,
- 38:13Speaker 1: Scott CM, Michael Alexander, and others. I'll kind of condense
- 38:17Speaker 1: it into what Scott wrote. He asked, have the Bengals
- 38:21Speaker 1: done enough with the offensive line and free agency where
- 38:24Speaker 1: they can draft somebody to complete the job of turning
- 38:27Speaker 1: that group around. Yeah? I do. I think that. I
- 38:32Speaker 1: think that, you know, you look at a lot of
- 38:34Speaker 1: things that have that have gone on there. The eleventh
- 38:37Speaker 1: pick in the draft didn't play a snap last year
- 38:39Speaker 1: obviously due to injury, is going to be back, you know. Um,
- 38:44Speaker 1: he's that other guys that that stepped up during the
- 38:48Speaker 1: course of the season and made themselves h you know,
- 38:52Speaker 1: made made themselves some money and are going to be
- 38:54Speaker 1: in the in the track Johnson in the competition that
- 38:57Speaker 1: the right tackles as I think he's gonna got up
- 39:00Speaker 1: big and uh, you know, and makes some noise there. Um,
- 39:05Speaker 1: Xavier will be competing a guard with Redmond and Jordan.
- 39:08Speaker 1: I mean, I think the offensive line is gonna look
- 39:11Speaker 1: a lot different. Could have a different right tackle, could
- 39:13Speaker 1: have it's gonna have a different right guard. I'll have
- 39:16Speaker 1: the same center it price plates excuse me, Jordan plays
- 39:20Speaker 1: from left guard team Billy Price. His dead guys be
- 39:24Speaker 1: battling and out probably for that that particular spot, you know.
- 39:28Speaker 1: And then then you get you get your eleventh pick
- 39:31Speaker 1: of the draft. Like having two number ones this year,
- 39:34Speaker 1: you have a first round draft pick just outside of
- 39:37Speaker 1: the top ten. It's gonna be lining up at the
- 39:39Speaker 1: left tackle position. So both your tackles could be different.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Your right guard's gonna be different at sixty percent of
- 39:46Speaker 1: your offensive line right there. So I'm thinking that that
- 39:50Speaker 1: they've done done quite a bit, and um, you know,
- 39:53Speaker 1: Isaiah Prince are going to take a look at obviously.
- 39:55Speaker 1: I mean, they've they've got they've got options there, and
- 39:58Speaker 1: I think the draft they will Um expend at least
- 40:02Speaker 1: to pick I think on the offensive line, William asks
- 40:07Speaker 1: if there's any chance the Bengals signed Jason Peters to
- 40:10Speaker 1: play right tackle. Tim asks, if there's any chance that
- 40:14Speaker 1: the Bengals acquire Trent Williams to play right tackle. I
- 40:18Speaker 1: think with what the money they've spent, I don't. I
- 40:21Speaker 1: don't think they've got the money to do it. I
- 40:23Speaker 1: really don't. Um, I don't. I don't necessarily you know,
- 40:28Speaker 1: see that to be the to be the case. I
- 40:30Speaker 1: don't think those and unless there's a huge deal to
- 40:33Speaker 1: be had, you know, unless free agency, uh, if if
- 40:38Speaker 1: those guys were of value what they're uh, what they're
- 40:44Speaker 1: presenting right now, they'd already be teams knocking doors down.
- 40:48Speaker 1: And you I don't know, I don't know exactly what's happening.
- 40:51Speaker 1: I don't know what kind of talks going on. And
- 40:53Speaker 1: I don't know if the Bengals were one of the
- 40:55Speaker 1: teams that initially you know, Gutton talks about those players.
- 40:58Speaker 1: But UM, you know the thing that the thing that
- 41:01Speaker 1: you do have to remember is, you know, Trent Williams
- 41:06Speaker 1: in particular company, he's a serious injury that we're talking
- 41:09Speaker 1: about now. You know, is he gonna be one hundred
- 41:11Speaker 1: percent from this, you know, cancers, tumor on his head, um,
- 41:16Speaker 1: you know that that Sometimes sometimes you just you just
- 41:21Speaker 1: don't know. I mean, where where is there's gonna be
- 41:26Speaker 1: X number of years in a career, and what's going
- 41:28Speaker 1: to take you down the backside slope of that that
- 41:32Speaker 1: career and when is it going to happen? Both of
- 41:35Speaker 1: them are are a little bit long in the tooth.
- 41:37Speaker 1: To me, I would I would feel a little bit
- 41:40Speaker 1: better about Trent Williams. I guess maybe I I've seen
- 41:44Speaker 1: him play. I mean, he was the most athletic, dominant
- 41:48Speaker 1: lyman I saw playing college for a good number of years.
- 41:51Speaker 1: When he was in Oklahoma, he was he was unbelievable,
- 41:54Speaker 1: unbelievable when he was playing there. Just a stud. Got
- 41:59Speaker 1: a ton of questions about the thirty third pick in
- 42:02Speaker 1: the draft. I'll had condense it down to a couple.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Dum pointed out that on a previous podcast, you had
- 42:08Speaker 1: suggested that you thought the Bengals were likely to go
- 42:11Speaker 1: with the best defensive player on the board at number
- 42:13Speaker 1: thirty three. Do you still feel that way in light
- 42:16Speaker 1: of the free agent acquisitions and similar thought from O
- 42:19Speaker 1: b With all the defensive additions in free agency, are
- 42:22Speaker 1: we going offense with the first three picks? Well, I,
- 42:28Speaker 1: like I said before, I still think that they have
- 42:31Speaker 1: to get another linebacker, more than one. They have to
- 42:35Speaker 1: get another starting linebacker, another sam backer. Now is he
- 42:40Speaker 1: would he be the best guy? You know? A guy
- 42:42Speaker 1: like oh, Logan Wilson out of Wyoming. Is you know
- 42:47Speaker 1: somebody that I think is a good player, Zach Bond.
- 42:51Speaker 1: Both of these guys were at the Senior Bowl. I
- 42:53Speaker 1: thought both of these guys were really good linebackers, really
- 42:56Speaker 1: good players. You know, Zach Bond was a high school
- 42:59Speaker 1: quarterback one time. And you know, I remember when I
- 43:02Speaker 1: was playing at Syracuse, Jolly Perturno would take high school
- 43:04Speaker 1: quarterbacks and converted the linebacker. And they're always great players,
- 43:08Speaker 1: you know, big body guys that filled out and had
- 43:10Speaker 1: great football sense and instincts. And I think Zach Bond
- 43:14Speaker 1: has got a little bit of that out of Wisconsin.
- 43:16Speaker 1: And Logan Wilson's a foreign a tackle guy. You know,
- 43:19Speaker 1: he went to UH College at while he's one hundred
- 43:22Speaker 1: and ninety five pound defensive back, wide receiver and now
- 43:25Speaker 1: he's like two fifty and six two two fifty and
- 43:28Speaker 1: he's you know, three year captains. So I'm not still
- 43:32Speaker 1: if if those guys, if thirty three is too rich,
- 43:36Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe move back, if one of those
- 43:39Speaker 1: two guys is going to be there later in the
- 43:41Speaker 1: second round, moved back, pick up an additional draft pick
- 43:45Speaker 1: and take take one of them there and move one
- 43:48Speaker 1: of those guys or another guy at linebacker or any
- 43:50Speaker 1: other person they may have evaluated higher than that. I
- 43:53Speaker 1: do think that linebacker will be paid attention to in
- 43:57Speaker 1: the draft. Other than that, I do think that to
- 44:00Speaker 1: go offensive line and wide receiver, you know, wide receiver draft,
- 44:04Speaker 1: it's the It's as deep as there's been in many,
- 44:07Speaker 1: many years. And I do think at some point in time,
- 44:09Speaker 1: there's gonna be in any one of the rounds, particularly
- 44:12Speaker 1: because like we talked about so many times day, and
- 44:15Speaker 1: they're so high, they're so high every round. It's gonna
- 44:17Speaker 1: be every time they reshuffled their board. Damn, I can't
- 44:20Speaker 1: believe that receiver is still there. And then people are
- 44:22Speaker 1: gonna be calling them, you know, to you and you know,
- 44:25Speaker 1: maybe I don't know if they'd be going off to
- 44:26Speaker 1: the same receiver the Bengals that targeted, but you know,
- 44:29Speaker 1: having that first tick in every round is a good
- 44:32Speaker 1: place to be. And uh, and you're gonna be able
- 44:35Speaker 1: to get whoever slid when they reshuffle their boards after
- 44:39Speaker 1: that round is done, you know you're gonna have the
- 44:41Speaker 1: first crack at it. So I'm sure there will be
- 44:45Speaker 1: a wide receiver at some point that they're gonna say,
- 44:47Speaker 1: we can't pass on this guy. But you know that
- 44:51Speaker 1: every every Bengal fan is probably feeling the same way.
- 44:55Speaker 1: Is this year that Adrian Ross, excuse me, John Ross
- 44:59Speaker 1: and he Jay Green play significant number snaps together on
- 45:03Speaker 1: the field at the same time. It hasn't happened. I mean,
- 45:07Speaker 1: it hasn't happened. And then Tyler Boyd, you know, I
- 45:10Speaker 1: mean that if they can Tyler Boyd obviously has giving
- 45:13Speaker 1: them a lot of good. If they can have that
- 45:15Speaker 1: those three guys just for one year, particularly with a
- 45:19Speaker 1: new quarterback, potentially you know, coming into the mix man
- 45:23Speaker 1: make all the difference in the world. You know. But um,
- 45:26Speaker 1: if you can improve that line back, that wide receiver position,
- 45:29Speaker 1: and that's the best player on the board at thirty
- 45:32Speaker 1: three and you can't move back, do it? Do it?
- 45:34Speaker 1: You always take the best player? Well, there two more
- 45:37Speaker 1: of these from the audience from Kadiki. How many draft
- 45:40Speaker 1: picks will the Bengals wind up with? That's a great question.
- 45:45Speaker 1: I think more than seven. I'm I'm I'm almost hoping
- 45:49Speaker 1: that it's closer than nine. I'd I'd like to see
- 45:53Speaker 1: him come come away with nine draft picks in this
- 45:55Speaker 1: year's draft. That that would uh, you know that that
- 45:58Speaker 1: could make some sense to me? All right? Final ask
- 46:03Speaker 1: lap question. This one comes from Daniel not Horde. With
- 46:09Speaker 1: linebacker issues, would there be any thought of bringing back
- 46:14Speaker 1: Vontes Perfect, Boy, I don't see it. I really don't
- 46:20Speaker 1: see that. I was just gonna go with no, yeah,
- 46:24Speaker 1: I did. That would be a you know, in in
- 46:26Speaker 1: this in this year or football, like we said before, Um,
- 46:30Speaker 1: it's you know, you're playing with two linebackers a lot.
- 46:33Speaker 1: And Vontz obviously he was one of those two linebackers
- 46:36Speaker 1: a good part of his career here and since Nattie.
- 46:39Speaker 1: But I mean he's you know, he he's getting longer
- 46:41Speaker 1: in the tooth and h I just I just don't
- 46:45Speaker 1: see it. I think that, uh, I think that they
- 46:47Speaker 1: need to then they need to get some young bodies
- 46:50Speaker 1: in here they can run and uh and go that way.
- 46:54Speaker 1: That's that's the way the National Football League's going. Everybody
- 46:56Speaker 1: is everybody's trying to spread you out in isolation space.
- 47:00Speaker 1: And uh, the linebacker position, there's not there's not a
- 47:03Speaker 1: whole lot of uh, you know, Dicktka's rain Nichkey, you know,
- 47:08Speaker 1: you know numbers downhill knock your block off linebackers in
- 47:12Speaker 1: this league anymore? All right? I look forward to when
- 47:17Speaker 1: we can do this sitting side by side in our
- 47:19Speaker 1: cubicles as opposed to long distance. I hear you, Dan,
- 47:24Speaker 1: I hope uh, I hope you and the Horde family
- 47:27Speaker 1: are all staying staying healthy and happy and uh getting
- 47:30Speaker 1: through this the best you possibly can. Same to you.
- 47:33Speaker 1: Careful and hopeful are my slogans. I like it. I
- 47:38Speaker 1: like it. There's no no doubt about it. And I'll
- 47:40Speaker 1: tell you though it is boring, isn't it holy? It's unbelievable.
- 47:46Speaker 1: I mean, you talk about stir crazy. I mean I've
- 47:49Speaker 1: got I have fanny fatigue. Man, I get to get
- 47:52Speaker 1: up and move start moving around a little bit more. Man,
- 47:55Speaker 1: I got f squared fanny fatigue disease. I don't want
- 47:57Speaker 1: to haul one of the worst symptoms of home confinement,
- 48:03Speaker 1: appreciate the time. Thanks all right, Dan, have a great one.
