- 0:01Speaker 1: Taking a Walk Nashville.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Hey everyone, it's Sarah Errolson, your host of the Taking
- 0:05Speaker 2: a Walk Nashville podcast. Today with me, I have ink.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Fresh off a Grammy win and hot 100 hits with
- 0:13Speaker 2: both Kendrick Lamar and BTS, Ink is making her Lollapalooza
- 0:18Speaker 2: debut at the top of her game. She has crafted
- 0:21Speaker 2: chart-topping tracks for some of music's biggest stars. Kendrick Lamar's Luther,
- 0:28Speaker 2: Beyonce's 16 Carriages, she wrote Texas Hold'em. and has also
- 0:34Speaker 2: worked with BTS. Ink is now carving her own path
- 0:37Speaker 2: as a solo artist, combining her unmatched songwriting with a
- 0:41Speaker 2: unique blend of Americana and R & B. Her debut
- 0:45Speaker 2: EP last year's Big Buskin received critical praise from Variety, Billboard,
- 0:52Speaker 2: and more, and now she has a new single out
- 0:55Speaker 2: called American Reject. Join me today as I sit down
- 1:00Speaker 2: with artist songwriter producer.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Inc welcome to taking a walk nashville with your host
- 1:14Speaker 1: singer songwriter sarah harrelson here.
- 1:16Speaker 2: With me today is singer songwriter artist producer inc How
- 1:22Speaker 2: are you doing today? Incredible.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Thank you for having me on the pod.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. I'm excited to have you
- 1:28Speaker 2: here in Nashville. You are performing at Musician's Corner in
- 1:31Speaker 2: Centennial Park this weekend for Americana Fest. And you have
- 1:35Speaker 2: a new single coming out October 23rd, American Reject. I
- 1:40Speaker 2: love this song. I love how it's a little bit
- 1:42Speaker 2: more stripped down. I got to have a sneak peek
- 1:46Speaker 2: of the music video. It features you in the studio
- 1:48Speaker 2: and at Stagecoach. Tell me a little bit more about
- 1:51Speaker 2: this song.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Okay, yes, we love that. I love how you said
- 1:55Speaker 3: that you love that it's more stripped down because that's
- 1:57Speaker 3: exactly what it is. It's just me at my core.
- 2:00Speaker 3: You know what I mean? When I'm at my core,
- 2:01Speaker 3: I'm just doodling on the guitar. And one of our
- 2:05Speaker 3: producers and bandmates, he's actually playing with us today, James Talbert.
- 2:09Speaker 3: We were just messing around, and he was playing the guitar.
- 2:11Speaker 3: We were recording another song, and in the middle of
- 2:15Speaker 3: that song.
- 2:16Speaker 4: We just started jamming.
- 2:17Speaker 3: And that's how the song was born. And yeah, it's
- 2:22Speaker 3: a special record. It's also a personal record that no
- 2:26Speaker 3: matter where you're from, what you've been through, your story,
- 2:29Speaker 3: anyone can identify with it. You know what I mean?
- 2:31Speaker 3: And I think it's just so personal and so special
- 2:33Speaker 3: that It's just been getting a great response so far.
- 2:37Speaker 3: It's my first time doing like the pre-save thing and
- 2:39Speaker 3: actually promoting and actually intentionally setting up a good 60
- 2:45Speaker 3: day promo because that's how special the song is to me.
- 2:49Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 2:50Speaker 2: It's a beautiful song. I can't wait for the world
- 2:52Speaker 2: to hear it. Are you excited to perform at Musician's
- 2:55Speaker 2: Corner this weekend here in Nashville?
- 2:57Speaker 3: I'm excited. I'm excited. It's my first Americana Fest, my
- 3:00Speaker 3: first time being at Musician's Corner. So, you know, I'm
- 3:03Speaker 3: a musician that really was on the corner, on the street.
- 3:06Speaker 3: So it just means everything to be able to come
- 3:08Speaker 3: back to these type of stages and still bring.
- 3:11Speaker 4: The authenticity of what I represented in my vibe.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Very cool. And in addition to your own releases, you
- 3:17Speaker 2: have penned and produced chart-topping tracks for some of music's
- 3:21Speaker 2: biggest stars, including songs for Kendrick Lamar, Beyonce, BTS. You've
- 3:26Speaker 2: had many of your own releases, but what does it
- 3:29Speaker 2: mean for you to carve out your own path as
- 3:32Speaker 2: a solo artist combining this unique blend of Americana, R & B,
- 3:36Speaker 2: and country?
- 3:38Speaker 3: That's actually my favorite part. I love getting to work
- 3:40Speaker 3: with the legends and the ghosts and even the up-and-coming
- 3:43Speaker 3: artists and just artists in general because collaborating is everything.
- 3:47Speaker 3: It's nothing like that energy in the room. I learn
- 3:50Speaker 3: so much from working with different artists. But Ink at
- 3:55Speaker 3: the Core is, like I said, a songwriter, playing that guitar,
- 3:59Speaker 3: telling stories and painting pictures. Nothing makes me happier than
- 4:03Speaker 3: when I get to really just connect with my audience,
- 4:06Speaker 3: you know what I mean? And meet new fans and
- 4:09Speaker 3: be able to play the songs that I write and perform.
- 4:11Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Because it's a different thing.
- 4:13Speaker 3: People always ask me, what do you like better, being
- 4:14Speaker 3: a songwriter or performing? And I'm just like, I really
- 4:17Speaker 3: enjoy performing because I get to do everything at once.
- 4:19Speaker 4: You know, you get to produce.
- 4:21Speaker 3: You get to put the show together. You get to sing.
- 4:24Speaker 3: You still get to write, play the songs you write.
- 4:27Speaker 3: So it's the best of both worlds, you.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Know what I mean? I'm just glad to really be
- 4:30Speaker 4: able to do what I love.
- 4:31Speaker 3: But this is the special part. It's like my heart string.
- 4:34Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 4:34Speaker 3: Like coming out here, being on stage, giving it all
- 4:38Speaker 3: I got. Yeah.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Yeah. And that's a tough question that people ask because
- 4:42Speaker 2: there are also different types of creative forms, being an
- 4:46Speaker 2: artist and performer, writing the songs for other artists, being
- 4:50Speaker 2: in the studio producing. They're all different, but they're.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Special in their own ways.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Facts. They really are.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:56Speaker 2: So I love your debut EP, Big Buskin. The artwork
- 5:00Speaker 2: is so fun. Fire, right? I love it.
- 5:03Speaker 3: I'm stepping.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Do you find it more difficult producing songs for yourself
- 5:08Speaker 2: than other artists?
- 5:11Speaker 3: I do and I don't. It's a trick question because
- 5:14Speaker 3: I don't because I just let it flow. I don't
- 5:16Speaker 3: have to think about what they like or don't like
- 5:19Speaker 3: or I just put the paint where I'm at. I
- 5:23Speaker 3: just let it spill out. But then it's more intentional.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Like for this record, Big Buskin was so intentional in
- 5:29Speaker 3: how the records were produced and going back to finish
- 5:32Speaker 3: them and bringing the producers in together with me to
- 5:35Speaker 3: create it, bringing the live musicians and really like sitting down,
- 5:39Speaker 3: taking my boots off and ironing it out. That's a
- 5:42Speaker 3: different type of tenacity and like grinding to really sit
- 5:47Speaker 3: there and, okay, obsess over one sound or This organ
- 5:50Speaker 3: isn't right.
- 5:51Speaker 4: This B3, this snare isn't right.
- 5:53Speaker 3: This, you know what I mean? But when it all
- 5:55Speaker 3: came together.
- 5:56Speaker 4: It was probably one of my best pieces of work because.
- 6:00Speaker 3: The time put into it and the intention. So I
- 6:04Speaker 3: feel like it's harder, but it's also easier because it's
- 6:06Speaker 3: just like, you.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Know, You get to take it in your own direction.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Yeah, wherever I want to go. And the final product
- 6:12Speaker 3: depends on me. Like, when I'm with other artists, you know,
- 6:14Speaker 3: the final product is in their hands. So, you know
- 6:16Speaker 3: what I mean? I can give my input and stuff,
- 6:18Speaker 3: but it's ultimately up to that artist. So, with me
- 6:21Speaker 3: as an artist, I already know it's up to big ink. Absolutely.
- 6:25Speaker 2: And you mentioned spilling it out, putting it out there.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Is that how you got ink for your own brand
- 6:31Speaker 2: and your artistry?
- 6:32Speaker 3: Yeah, like, you know, I just knew I was with
- 6:34Speaker 3: the pen. I always was a songwriter. When I first
- 6:37Speaker 3: started my artist name, I was doing gangster rap, southern rap.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Being from the South, we was just on that. You
- 6:43Speaker 3: know what I mean? Like, Pastor Choi was on that
- 6:46Speaker 3: crime model. LaJawna Eastside Boy. You know what I mean?
- 6:49Speaker 4: That Gucci.
- 6:49Speaker 3: That's how we came up. So my first artist name
- 6:53Speaker 3: was Southern.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Okay.
- 6:55Speaker 3: And then that evolved.
- 6:56Speaker 4: And I was like, no, this got to be. You
- 6:58Speaker 4: got to have that star power to it.
- 7:00Speaker 3: So then I went by Atea Ink, because that was
- 7:01Speaker 3: just my real name, Atea. And then I was writing.
- 7:05Speaker 3: So I put the ink on there. And then one
- 7:07Speaker 3: day I was just like, no, it's time for just ink.
- 7:12Speaker 3: I love it.
- 7:13Speaker 2: And people can find you on socials at Spill My Ink, right?
- 7:16Speaker 3: Yeah, Spill My Ink. When I first got on IG,
- 7:18Speaker 3: ink was taken, of course. They didn't even come up
- 7:20Speaker 3: with their name. So I came up with Spill My Ink, and.
- 7:23Speaker 4: That's actually the name of my publishing company as well. Nice.
- 7:26Speaker 4: It's been a whole little vibe since then.
- 7:27Speaker 3: That's all he said. We spilling.
- 7:29Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 7:30Speaker 3: I love it.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Going back to the beginning of your career, what was
- 7:34Speaker 2: the first big recording session as a producer where you thought, yeah,
- 7:39Speaker 2: I can do this. This is totally my environment. First bit.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Well, I can tell you for sure. Like one of
- 7:46Speaker 3: the things that I have produced, um, could produce, I
- 7:49Speaker 3: did it with my, Producer Dave handled it as well
- 7:52Speaker 3: for Beyonce, 16 Carriages. And it just came effortlessly. I
- 7:56Speaker 3: was just in there. Only time I've been early for
- 7:58Speaker 3: a session, got there before everybody else, sat there, was
- 8:02Speaker 3: playing a song. And then Dave came and he said,
- 8:04Speaker 3: that's the song. I said, what?
- 8:06Speaker 4: He said, that's it.
- 8:07Speaker 3: And then we produced it out from there. And he
- 8:09Speaker 3: took it and took it on home. But yeah, like
- 8:12Speaker 3: that was just like, oh, all I need is me.
- 8:14Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Like all I need is
- 8:16Speaker 3: all I got. And this is it, just the story,
- 8:19Speaker 3: the perspective. And that's the producing. The producing is knowing
- 8:25Speaker 3: how not to overdo it. Knowing that the simplicity is enough.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Or just knowing the ear and knowing what to use,
- 8:33Speaker 3: what not to use. And like we always do, we
- 8:35Speaker 3: don't overcrowd it.
- 8:36Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 8:38Speaker 2: That's so true. Where did that session and most of
- 8:40Speaker 2: your sessions take place?
- 8:42Speaker 3: My sessions take place all around the world. A lot
- 8:44Speaker 3: of that beatboxing stuff I did in Atlanta, I did
- 8:46Speaker 3: in Nashville. Oh, I did in LA.
- 8:50Speaker 4: All over.
- 8:50Speaker 3: I travel with my music is throughout the world. You
- 8:53Speaker 3: know what I mean? Cause like I'm a people person.
- 8:55Speaker 3: So where I am, that's where that music is. But
- 8:58Speaker 3: I record in LA a lot, Nashville, Atlanta.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Yeah. Mostly New York. I love making music in New
- 9:07Speaker 4: York too. Okay.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:08Speaker 2: So you're all over. What bridge led you to working
- 9:11Speaker 2: more in Nashville and country music over the years?
- 9:15Speaker 3: It's just something I always wanted to do, man. When
- 9:18Speaker 3: I came down here, we were working with Beyonce. She
- 9:22Speaker 3: sent us to Nashville. I came down here before doing
- 9:26Speaker 3: a lot of songwriter stuff. When I was growing up,
- 9:28Speaker 3: one of my favorite movies was a thing called Love.
- 9:33Speaker 3: I always wanted to come to Nashville because that just
- 9:34Speaker 3: was in my core. It's a music town. It's a
- 9:37Speaker 3: songwriter's town. As a songwriter, it's a songwriter's world out
- 9:41Speaker 3: in Nashville. I knew I was going to come out
- 9:43Speaker 3: here and just immerse myself with the community. And, you know,
- 9:47Speaker 3: I always loved Tennessee. I got some family from Tennessee,
- 9:49Speaker 3: so it just made sense. And naturally when I came
- 9:52Speaker 3: down here, everybody just gravitated towards it and I just
- 9:54Speaker 3: felt so welcome and loved. So I came down here,
- 9:57Speaker 3: did a project with a couple of the teams that
- 10:00Speaker 3: I was with, and we just made a hub out here.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Very cool. Yeah, and your roots are in Georgia. I
- 10:07Speaker 2: also read that you were born in Germany. Did you
- 10:10Speaker 2: spend a lot of time out there?
- 10:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I did. My early years, I was in Germany
- 10:14Speaker 3: for sure. As a kid, that's when I was first born.
- 10:17Speaker 3: I was born in Frankfurt, Maine, A.M. hospital and uh
- 10:22Speaker 3: it's just been in me you know i mean like
- 10:23Speaker 3: i just be traveling and meeting so many people and.
- 10:25Speaker 4: I have people you grew up there you was.
- 10:28Speaker 3: A military bat yeah so i'm military bat man i.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Like call it military military boss you know.
- 10:34Speaker 3: I mean but yeah germany and just being in turkey
- 10:38Speaker 3: and overseas it just gave me a more culture from
- 10:41Speaker 3: my perspective and my outlook, and I just never fit
- 10:44Speaker 3: in my box. The music is like that because my
- 10:46Speaker 3: life was always like that. My mother was a single mother,
- 10:50Speaker 3: but she gave me the best life that a child
- 10:54Speaker 3: could have, and I thank her all the time for
- 10:57Speaker 3: giving me the exposure.
- 10:58Speaker 2: That is great. Yeah, my husband grew up in Germany
- 11:01Speaker 2: and bad eye when he was in the military.
- 11:05Speaker 3: So he's different. We just built different.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Yeah, just built different. Well, it was just announced that
- 11:10Speaker 2: you are appearing in an upcoming episode of the new
- 11:13Speaker 2: season of the show Fire Country on CBS. What was
- 11:18Speaker 2: that experience like performing on that show?
- 11:20Speaker 3: Man, that was incredible. It's actually one of my mom's
- 11:23Speaker 3: favorite shows. So before they had put my music on
- 11:25Speaker 3: the show and at the time I didn't catch it
- 11:29Speaker 3: but my family caught it just organically they were just
- 11:31Speaker 3: watching the show and I was like oh let's hold
- 11:33Speaker 3: down so they were all excited and I was like
- 11:36Speaker 3: I really love the show and so we just love
- 11:39Speaker 3: the whole cast I mean they welcomed me in everybody
- 11:42Speaker 3: from Max the directors Amy and Luke Breland worked so
- 11:46Speaker 3: hard to put it together and just the whole 2B
- 11:50Speaker 3: team and the team over at CBS I'm so appreciative
- 11:53Speaker 3: for everything that they put together because Fire Country and
- 11:58Speaker 3: We on fire right now. So that's them calling right now.
- 12:01Speaker 3: They need me at the station right now. Yeah, I'm
- 12:05Speaker 3: definitely an honorary firefighter now, for sure. So being out there,
- 12:09Speaker 3: it's shot in Canada. Okay, great. So it was dope,
- 12:12Speaker 3: like being on set, having my own trailer and being like,
- 12:15Speaker 3: I'm like, oh yeah, I can do this.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Yeah, acting.
- 12:18Speaker 3: So it was cool that I got to play myself.
- 12:20Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 12:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:21Speaker 3: My first real TV show, guest appearance. was being inked,
- 12:27Speaker 3: you know what I mean?
- 12:27Speaker 4: I think that's just a testimony to just me staying
- 12:30Speaker 4: authentic and doing what I love to do.
- 12:32Speaker 3: But I definitely want to get more into the acting,
- 12:34Speaker 3: so this was a great first for me.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Do you know when the episode releases that you're featured in?
- 12:41Speaker 3: I want to say October 3rd? Is it October 3rd
- 12:45Speaker 3: or October 23rd? Something like that, but it's episode three. Okay,
- 12:50Speaker 3: so people can check that out. I think it's episode three.
- 12:53Speaker 4: I don't think it's episode five. Yeah.
- 12:55Speaker 3: But Fire Country, if you go to the Fire Country Instagram,
- 12:59Speaker 3: Fire Country page, you're going to see it. Tap in.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Make sure you look out for the ink. And, you know,
- 13:06Speaker 3: just for the ones that have been staying down with
- 13:08Speaker 3: me and seeing the journey from me playing on the
- 13:10Speaker 3: streets to playing on the train, just to see how
- 13:12Speaker 3: far we came for real, for real.
- 13:14Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 13:14Speaker 3: Like, this is for all my folks. And if you're
- 13:16Speaker 3: new here, I appreciate you tuning in.
- 13:19Speaker 4: And now you can.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Spill the ink with us. I love Far Country. Shout
- 13:23Speaker 3: out to the whole crew and everybody on Far Country, man.
- 13:25Speaker 2: You're spilling your ink all over the world for sure
- 13:29Speaker 2: with your music. You're a Grammy winner. Your new single,
- 13:32Speaker 2: as I mentioned, American Reject, comes out this October. What's
- 13:36Speaker 2: down the road for you in 2027? What can you
- 13:39Speaker 2: tell us as far as upcoming performances and music?
- 13:43Speaker 3: I just say stay tuned. I mean, the schedule is
- 13:45Speaker 3: so crazy. I don't even know what's happening next week.
- 13:47Speaker 3: I mean, we've just been on the move. We just
- 13:49Speaker 3: got back from Europe for a month. We just came
- 13:51Speaker 3: back from London. We just did a couple shows overseas.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Nice.
- 13:56Speaker 3: So, yeah, I can tell you the big screen for sure.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Very cool.
- 14:01Speaker 4: I know you see me on the.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Screen now, but the screen getting even bigger and bigger.
- 14:04Speaker 4: So stay tuned for that for sure.
- 14:06Speaker 3: And some of the best shows and performances I think
- 14:10Speaker 3: that we've seen yet. And each show is a different
- 14:12Speaker 3: side of me.
- 14:12Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 14:13Speaker 3: That's why it's always been like that since I had
- 14:15Speaker 3: my band, Vintage Nation. Every time you come to the show,
- 14:17Speaker 3: you see a different performance. It might not be the
- 14:19Speaker 3: same vibe. Some songs might be just acoustic. Sometimes it
- 14:23Speaker 3: might be rocking out real hard. Sometimes it might be
- 14:25Speaker 3: just violins and strings with a guitar. You just never
- 14:28Speaker 3: know the experience. So I tell everybody, experience ink. So
- 14:33Speaker 3: look out for the shows. Make sure you check me
- 14:35Speaker 3: out on Instagram at spillmyinkin. You can catch all the
- 14:38Speaker 3: updates there. Perfect.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Do you have your upcoming shows on your website as well?
- 14:42Speaker 3: Yeah, on my website, on my Apple, Spotify, we listen
- 14:47Speaker 3: to them.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Amazing.
- 14:48Speaker 2: We'll look out for that. Do you find it difficult
- 14:52Speaker 2: splitting your time between your own artistry, performing and producing
- 14:57Speaker 2: songs for other artists right now?
- 14:59Speaker 3: Yeah, right now I'm just being tugged right now because
- 15:02Speaker 3: I love writing.
- 15:03Speaker 4: I know I'm a service. That's what I'm here to do.
- 15:06Speaker 3: I'm here to serve the creators and I'm always be that.
- 15:11Speaker 4: I'm always do that.
- 15:11Speaker 3: So in between me writing for myself and doing Lollapalooza
- 15:16Speaker 3: and stagecoach, shooting movies, I'm always finding time when the
- 15:21Speaker 3: artists call me at like, hey, where you at?
- 15:23Speaker 4: We need you.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Let's go. You know what I mean? So I always
- 15:25Speaker 3: call by that time, especially when I get that call.
- 15:27Speaker 3: I'm like a doctor. When I get that call, I'm like,
- 15:30Speaker 3: so in between calls, I'm going real hard. And then
- 15:33Speaker 3: I get that call, I'm like, all right, let's pull
- 15:34Speaker 3: it up. Yeah, you're making it for everyone.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, my last question for you, I always do
- 15:40Speaker 2: a Nashville-related question since we're on Taking a Walk Nashville, Inc.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Do you have a favorite Nashville memory or collaboration?
- 15:50Speaker 3: Favorite Nashville memory or collaboration? This right here might be
- 15:54Speaker 3: one of them. I love it. Taking a Walk podcast.
- 15:58Speaker 4: Come on, man. This top up there.
- 16:00Speaker 3: But one of my favorite Nashville memories, I don't know,
- 16:03Speaker 3: performing at The rhyming was though really getting to do
- 16:08Speaker 3: for him there with Big X the plug. That's actually
- 16:10Speaker 3: on Apple Music. So if you go to my Apple page,
- 16:13Speaker 3: you can see the whole performance. The mix came out.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Incredible live show. I had the Snape boot song. You
- 16:19Speaker 3: know what I mean? So we really represented that for
- 16:21Speaker 3: the hip hop culture, for the rap, everything that we
- 16:23Speaker 3: came from, for Big X to meet. And just doing
- 16:26Speaker 3: it live at that type of legendary venue, I think
- 16:28Speaker 3: it They haven't really did something like that before. So
- 16:32Speaker 3: that was a top memory in Nashville. But everything, even
- 16:36Speaker 3: from going to the Alchemist Cafe, I always go there
- 16:39Speaker 3: and get my fresh juices. Just being in the community,
- 16:41Speaker 3: that's what I love. Going to Dog's Cafe, getting my
- 16:43Speaker 3: soul food.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Yeah, man.
- 16:45Speaker 3: So many core Nashville memories. I love that.
