- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome to pick up and deliver the podcast where I
- 0:06Speaker 1: pick up my audio recorder as I leave the library
- 0:08Speaker 1: and deliver an episode to you all. I walk home.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I'm Brendan Riley well Greeting's listener. It is a snowy
- 0:23Speaker 1: dea here on suburban Chicago, and I'm walking home from
- 0:25Speaker 1: the library. Before it's called. I got really lucky. I
- 0:29Speaker 1: came into the library. They're like, we close in two minutes.
- 0:31Speaker 1: I was like, oh, I didn't realize you all closed
- 0:33Speaker 1: it early. They're like, well, we're closing early because of
- 0:35Speaker 1: the weather. And I was like, well, I just have
- 0:37Speaker 1: a game a book to grab off the old shelf
- 0:39Speaker 1: and they're like okay. So I grab a book off
- 0:41Speaker 1: the whole schelf, check out, and it's out of there
- 0:42Speaker 1: before they were supposed to close.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Ah. Nice.
- 0:47Speaker 1: So I was looking back over previous episodes, and in
- 0:50Speaker 1: January I did do a couple movie episodes. They were
- 0:54Speaker 1: spooky movie round Up, so I was talking about movies
- 0:57Speaker 1: I watched in October and late September, all spooky. But
- 1:02Speaker 1: I thought it would be fun today to talk a
- 1:03Speaker 1: little bit about the movies I watched in November and December.
- 1:10Speaker 1: So as I often do in the movie round up.
- 1:11Speaker 1: My plans to talk about different movies until I run
- 1:14Speaker 1: out of time. Then I will quickly list to the
- 1:15Speaker 1: other movies I watched without talking about them. As usual,
- 1:19Speaker 1: I will try to share a little bit about which
- 1:22Speaker 1: game might go with each with which movie if you're
- 1:25Speaker 1: being thematic about it. But we'll so we'll see where
- 1:28Speaker 1: that goes, all right, Just starting, I'm gonna start with
- 1:34Speaker 1: The Penguin Pool Murder. The Penguin Pool Murder is an
- 1:37Speaker 1: old movie from the nineteen forties that I requested through
- 1:40Speaker 1: the library because my wife and I read the Penguin
- 1:43Speaker 1: Pool Murder novel. This is a famous novel that became
- 1:48Speaker 1: part of a series of classic murder mystery novels in
- 1:51Speaker 1: which the main character is a sort of Miss Marple
- 1:53Speaker 1: type spinster lady who teams up with a heart as
- 1:59Speaker 1: leather New York police detective to solve a murder, and
- 2:02Speaker 1: the Penguin Pool Murder is specifically a guy who's hit
- 2:05Speaker 1: on the head and dropped into a pool in the
- 2:07Speaker 1: New York aquarium with some penguins. It is not a
- 2:12Speaker 1: great book, and frankly, the movie wasn't much better. It
- 2:16Speaker 1: was kind of kitchy and fun to watch to see
- 2:19Speaker 1: sort of how they did it. They aged the woman
- 2:22Speaker 1: up in the movie, which is really interesting. In the book,
- 2:25Speaker 1: she's supposed to be in her thirties and she's already
- 2:27Speaker 1: kind of a spinster depicted as a spinster. In the movie,
- 2:30Speaker 1: they cast a woman who's in her fifties to play
- 2:34Speaker 1: this character, which actually fits much better in terms of
- 2:36Speaker 1: the idea of spinster. But it was sort of an
- 2:40Speaker 1: interesting choice in terms of taking the character from the
- 2:43Speaker 1: book who's supposed to be a woman in her thirties
- 2:46Speaker 1: and making her be in her fifties. Like I said,
- 2:51Speaker 1: not really that great. They did change a couple of
- 2:53Speaker 1: pieces of evidence to make it make more sense for
- 2:55Speaker 1: a movie, but generally followed the plot of the book
- 2:58Speaker 1: pretty closely. If you're doing a murder mystery game, Awkward
- 3:02Speaker 1: Guests is going to be your winner. I think it's
- 3:04Speaker 1: an excellent deduction game, better than Clue, although a little
- 3:08Speaker 1: harder and longer too, so if you want to I
- 3:11Speaker 1: think Clue is great, especially if you house rule away
- 3:14Speaker 1: the movement stuff. I understand that Sid Saxon Sleuth is
- 3:17Speaker 1: basically Clue without the movement, so you could play that
- 3:20Speaker 1: or if you can get a hand if your hand's
- 3:22Speaker 1: on a copy of it. Martin Wallace is PI is
- 3:24Speaker 1: a pretty fun detective deduction game that would also work.
- 3:29Speaker 1: So that's the Penguin Pool murder. I also watched In
- 3:33Speaker 1: a Violent Nature. In a Violent Nature is a horror
- 3:37Speaker 1: movie that came out last summer and early fall. I
- 3:42Speaker 1: think it was out for Halloween. This is an a
- 3:45Speaker 1: twenty four horror movie and of the sort of pretty
- 3:48Speaker 1: standard type. The gimmick of it it is basically Friday
- 3:52Speaker 1: the thirteenth. You have a supernatural evil killer figure who
- 3:58Speaker 1: wears a mask and murders people for seemingly no reason,
- 4:03Speaker 1: who has a horrific backstory that and there's some sort
- 4:06Speaker 1: of magic way to contain them. The gimmick of the
- 4:10Speaker 1: movie is that the movie follows the killer rather than
- 4:15Speaker 1: the humans. So there's this really interesting thing where we
- 4:18Speaker 1: see the killer climb come out of the ground after
- 4:20Speaker 1: somebody disturbs the spell that was holding him in place,
- 4:23Speaker 1: and we see the killer lurching around murdering people, and
- 4:26Speaker 1: he never speaks, and he's always facing away from the camera,
- 4:28Speaker 1: and it's a really interesting movie. I thought it was
- 4:32Speaker 1: pretty good. I heard people like complaining it was too slow.
- 4:34Speaker 1: I'm like, well, I didn't think it was too slow.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I thought it was interesting and suspenseful, and part of
- 4:40Speaker 1: the idea is like nature goes on and nature doesn't
- 4:43Speaker 1: care about this person walking around, So I thought it
- 4:47Speaker 1: was I thought it was pretty good. That's in a
- 4:49Speaker 1: Violent Nature. If you wanted to get into the head
- 4:51Speaker 1: of that, I would say Friday or Next Friday, Last Friday,
- 4:55Speaker 1: Last Friday. It's called would be the game to play,
- 4:58Speaker 1: where it's basically Friday the Third. It's a hidden movement
- 5:01Speaker 1: game where one player plays the masked killer who's basically Jason,
- 5:06Speaker 1: and the other players play campers or camp counselors who
- 5:10Speaker 1: are trying to avoid being killed by him, and then
- 5:12Speaker 1: chase hundred down and kill him and it kind of
- 5:14Speaker 1: oscill its back and forth. We played that game once
- 5:17Speaker 1: and thought it was fine. The theme is really cool,
- 5:23Speaker 1: and so that's a game I would encourage you to
- 5:25Speaker 1: try if you're interested in the theme of in a
- 5:28Speaker 1: Violent Nature. There's also a Last Final Girl, which has
- 5:34Speaker 1: a similar element, except I have a number of holiday
- 5:41Speaker 1: movies that I watched for the first time, so I'd
- 5:43Speaker 1: like to share those with you. Kind of as a
- 5:47Speaker 1: joke because my wife and I enjoyed dumb holiday movies.
- 5:52Speaker 1: So sometimes we'll watch dumb holiday movies together and we
- 5:56Speaker 1: snark on them, but it's like, honestly enjoy watching them
- 6:01Speaker 1: even though we're snarking on them. And the one the
- 6:05Speaker 1: two that we watched this year that were really dumb,
- 6:07Speaker 1: the first one was called Hot Frosty, and essentially what
- 6:11Speaker 1: it is someone makes a snowman, but it's carved like
- 6:14Speaker 1: an Adonis figure, and then somebody puts a magical scarf
- 6:19Speaker 1: on it and so it animates into a himbo. That's
- 6:23Speaker 1: the premise basically, and then it's about a woman whose
- 6:27Speaker 1: heart was broken trying to find love with the himbo snowman.
- 6:30Speaker 1: It's pretty funny. The redeeming part of it's, like I said,
- 6:34Speaker 1: pretty dumb. But the redeeming part of it for me
- 6:36Speaker 1: was Craig Robinson and Joe Lutruglio play the police officers
- 6:40Speaker 1: of the town, and their performance was excellent. I really
- 6:46Speaker 1: liked their performance and it made for very enjoyable movie watching.
- 6:52Speaker 1: There are two more sort of silly holiday movies I
- 6:55Speaker 1: want to talk about. One of them is haul Out.
- 6:57Speaker 1: The Holly Lit Up So haul Out Holly is a
- 7:01Speaker 1: silly Christmas movie from last year in which a woman
- 7:06Speaker 1: marries into a family where their family runs the Hoa
- 7:11Speaker 1: and their sort of tyrants of Christmas decorating. I guess
- 7:15Speaker 1: I didn't watch that one, and Haul Out the Holly
- 7:18Speaker 1: lit up is now she has joined this family and
- 7:21Speaker 1: become one of the tyrants of Christmas decorating, and there's
- 7:25Speaker 1: another family that's like competing with them for the title
- 7:28Speaker 1: of best family decorators or something. It's real dumb not
- 7:33Speaker 1: there's very little redeeming quality in this movie. For me,
- 7:37Speaker 1: I thought it was pretty bad. The third one, however,
- 7:41Speaker 1: I thought was pretty enjoyable. This is Noel. Noel could
- 7:44Speaker 1: most easily be described as Elf, only of Anna Kendrick
- 7:48Speaker 1: playing the naife in the real world who loves Christmas
- 7:52Speaker 1: instead of Will Ferrell. It was pretty enjoyable. I think
- 7:57Speaker 1: it probably suffered from when it came out, and it's
- 8:00Speaker 1: not quite as good as Elf, not quite as accessible.
- 8:03Speaker 1: But there's a lot of really fun stuff in it.
- 8:05Speaker 1: And if you like sort of light hearted, warm Christmas movies,
- 8:08Speaker 1: you could do a lot worse than no Well, So
- 8:13Speaker 1: that is the Those are the three new Christmas movies
- 8:19Speaker 1: I watched, although I guess you could also count carry
- 8:22Speaker 1: On as a new Christmas movie. Carry On is an
- 8:25Speaker 1: Christmas action movie. It seems like it wants to be
- 8:29Speaker 1: die Hard. In carry On, there is the main character
- 8:34Speaker 1: is a guy who gets blackmailed or held hostage by
- 8:41Speaker 1: a mysterious voice trying to get him to do something
- 8:44Speaker 1: dangerous in an airport. He works in airport security, so
- 8:47Speaker 1: there's a really interesting element of the villain talking on
- 8:51Speaker 1: the phone to the hero, the hero trying to figure
- 8:53Speaker 1: out how to get around them and not being able
- 8:54Speaker 1: to outsmart the villain, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
- 8:57Speaker 1: That was pretty enjoyable. It's not as good as die Hard,
- 8:59Speaker 1: of course, but I could see really enjoying it. There
- 9:03Speaker 1: are some parts of it that were really dumb, some
- 9:06Speaker 1: parts of it that are pretty entertaining. I can't imagine
- 9:08Speaker 1: it's a movie I'm gonna watch every year, but you know,
- 9:11Speaker 1: in a couple of years I might go, yeah, that
- 9:12Speaker 1: was fun, We'll watch that one again. So it could
- 9:15Speaker 1: be a movie i'd watch occasionally. So that is carry On.
- 9:20Speaker 1: If you want to play a Christmas game. There are
- 9:22Speaker 1: two Christmas games that we have, both of which I
- 9:24Speaker 1: think are pretty enjoyable. We have Holly Jolly, which is
- 9:27Speaker 1: a card tableau builder that works pretty well, and we
- 9:31Speaker 1: have Santa's Workshop, which is a pretty straightforward, simple worker
- 9:37Speaker 1: place in the game, but it is fun to play
- 9:39Speaker 1: once a year to celebrate Christmas. You play elves building
- 9:43Speaker 1: toys for Santa's Workshop. It's simple and fun. I do
- 9:47Speaker 1: not have the fancy new edition published by Elf Creek Games.
- 9:50Speaker 1: I have the older edition published by Rio Grand, so
- 9:53Speaker 1: the graphic design isn't quite as nice, and it looks
- 9:56Speaker 1: like they change the rules enough that I can't retrofit
- 9:59Speaker 1: or I can't upgrade the rules to use the rules
- 10:02Speaker 1: from the new set. They changed things enough, But the
- 10:05Speaker 1: game we have is perfectly fine to play once a
- 10:07Speaker 1: year around Christmas, so I'm glad to have that. That's
- 10:11Speaker 1: Santa's Workshop. Oh I did I'm not gonna talk about here.
- 10:14Speaker 1: I did watch Elf and Mixed Nuts as well, which
- 10:17Speaker 1: are both Christmas movies. If you haven't seen Mixed Nuts,
- 10:20Speaker 1: it is an underappreciated gem. Madeline con is in it,
- 10:25Speaker 1: Leave Schreiber, Adam Sandler, Steve Martin, Rita Wilson, Anthony la
- 10:30Speaker 1: Paglia and Juliette lewis real who's who of movies written
- 10:35Speaker 1: by Nora Afron, which is really good. I think it's
- 10:39Speaker 1: a very enjoyable movie. For some reason people didn't like it,
- 10:41Speaker 1: but they're all wrong. I did get to watch a
- 10:48Speaker 1: couple more action movies as well. There was one evening
- 10:51Speaker 1: we watched National Treasure, just because we hadn't watched it
- 10:54Speaker 1: in a while, and it was actually New Year's even.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Now that I think about it, and you know what
- 10:58Speaker 1: that movie holds up. If you haven't watched National Treasure
- 11:01Speaker 1: in a while, go watch it. It is really fun.
- 11:04Speaker 1: It's well made, it's entertaining, it's reasonably suspenseful. It is
- 11:09Speaker 1: sort of wholesome, like, sure there's action, sure there's people
- 11:14Speaker 1: threatened with death, but there's no like, there's not much
- 11:19Speaker 1: swearing or any swearing, there's no nudity, there's no sex.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Like I said, there's a little bit of violence, but
- 11:24Speaker 1: mostly it's adventure and you got Nicholas Cage, so you
- 11:29Speaker 1: can't really go wrong. You should go watch National Treasure
- 11:31Speaker 1: if you haven't watched it in a while. And then
- 11:36Speaker 1: I did get a feeling or get a hankering for
- 11:41Speaker 1: some Matt Damon punching people movies. Actually, I think I
- 11:46Speaker 1: saw a clip from The Bourne Supremacy and I was like,
- 11:49Speaker 1: I haven't watched The Bourne Supremacy in a long time.
- 11:51Speaker 1: I watched The Bourne Identity sometime last year because that's
- 11:54Speaker 1: my favorite of the Bourne movies. I think it's really
- 11:56Speaker 1: really good. But the other two are pretty good also.
- 11:58Speaker 1: I don't like Jason Bourne, the fourth one. That one
- 12:01Speaker 1: feels like they already made all the stories they need
- 12:04Speaker 1: to tell and then they did one more for some reason.
- 12:07Speaker 1: I do like The Bourne Legacy, the one with Jeremy Renner,
- 12:12Speaker 1: and I'm sad they didn't make more of those, but whatever.
- 12:17Speaker 1: So I watched The Borne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.
- 12:20Speaker 1: These are basically the same movie. They're like two parts
- 12:23Speaker 1: of the same movie rather than two different movies. In fact,
- 12:26Speaker 1: the second one, Bourn Ultimatum, which is the third in
- 12:30Speaker 1: the series, starts right after Bourne Supremacy ended, so you
- 12:35Speaker 1: really need to see them as the same movie. They've
- 12:38Speaker 1: got great spycraft, great action sequences, really fun secret agencies
- 12:44Speaker 1: spying on us stuff, really fun conspiracy stuff. Just overall
- 12:50Speaker 1: an excellent pair of movies to watch. When you're feeling
- 12:54Speaker 1: like watching something fun that is the Born Supremacy and
- 12:59Speaker 1: The Bourne Ultimate Them. Well, those are about all the
- 13:01Speaker 1: films that I watched. I realized I didn't really talk
- 13:03Speaker 1: about games much. If you wanted to play a game
- 13:06Speaker 1: that went with the Born Identity or Born Supremacy, might
- 13:10Speaker 1: be a hidden movement game, you got your specter ops
- 13:13Speaker 1: or you got your like a bunch of people chasing
- 13:16Speaker 1: one person kind of game would fit mind management. Perhaps
- 13:20Speaker 1: would be a good pair up for Born Ultimatum and
- 13:23Speaker 1: Borne Supremacy. I talked about the Christmas movies already, National Treasure,
- 13:29Speaker 1: that one. I don't know that I have a good
- 13:32Speaker 1: answer for. You know, adventure games like Fortune and Glory
- 13:36Speaker 1: might fit something like that, or if they have I
- 13:39Speaker 1: know they didn't make They've made in Indiana Jones games,
- 13:42Speaker 1: but I don't have any of them. But overall, yeah,
- 13:46Speaker 1: that's something I think about. But that brings me to
- 13:51Speaker 1: the end of my movie roundup. I would love to
- 13:55Speaker 1: hear what you have been watching and what you feel
- 13:59Speaker 1: like playing with those. Head over to board game ge
- 14:01Speaker 1: Guilt two three two sixty nine and let me know
- 14:04Speaker 1: what you've been watching, and I will be happy to
- 14:09Speaker 1: hear it. That's about it for me today. Thanks for
- 14:12Speaker 1: joining me. I hope your next walk is as pleasant
- 14:15Speaker 1: as mine us.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Bye bye.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Brought to you by rattle box
