- 0:13The most interesting thing about a Roman soldier's armor
- 0:16may be the one weapon the Apostle Paul never mentioned.
- 0:21He described the helmet, the breastplate, the shield,
- 0:24the sword, the belt, and even the shoes.
- 0:28But one of the Roman soldier's most recognizable weapons is
- 0:32missing— the spear. And when
- 0:35we understand how Roman soldiers used that spear,
- 0:39its absence may actually help us appreciate a powerful
- 0:43truth about the Christian life. Welcome to Traveler's
- 0:47Tales, produced by Enjoying the Journey. I'm Greg Dowdy.
- 0:51Sometimes the smallest details in Scripture lead us to
- 0:54some of the most important discoveries.
- 0:58Understanding the customs, geography, and history of the
- 1:01Bible can bring familiar passages into sharper focus and
- 1:06help us apply their truths to our lives today.
- 1:10We are grateful for the research of our friend John Buckner,
- 1:13who helps us explore the historical background behind
- 1:16these journeys. Today, we're stepping onto an
- 1:20ancient Roman battlefield to examine a familiar passage
- 1:23of Scripture and one missing weapon that offers a
- 1:27timely reminder for every follower of Jesus Christ.
- 1:32In the 6th chapter of Ephesians, the Apostle Paul uses
- 1:35the equipment of a Roman soldier to illustrate the spiritual
- 1:39resources God has provided for His children.
- 1:42In Ephesians 6:11, Paul writes,
- 1:46Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand
- 1:50against the wiles of the devil. For people living under
- 1:54Roman rule, the image of a soldier would have been very familiar.
- 1:58Roman soldiers were stationed throughout the empire, and their equipment
- 2:02was designed for both protection and combat.
- 2:06Paul mentions the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness,
- 2:10the shoes of the preparation of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith,
- 2:14the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit,
- 2:18which is the word of God. But there is something interesting
- 2:22about this list. One of the most important weapons carried
- 2:26by a Roman infantryman was his spear,
- 2:29commonly called the pilum. This was no ordinary
- 2:33spear. The pilum was a specially designed throwing weapon,
- 2:37usually consisting of a wooden shaft connected to a long iron
- 2:41shank. Its purpose was to disrupt
- 2:45the enemy before the Roman soldier advanced into close combat.
- 2:49The weapon could penetrate an enemy shield, and some designs were
- 2:52intended to bend or become difficult to remove after
- 2:56impact. The shield struck by one of these spears could become
- 3:00cumbersome and nearly useless. The Roman soldier
- 3:04was trained to throw his spear as the battle began.
- 3:08Then, with his shield raised and his sword ready,
- 3:12he would advance toward the enemy. And that brings us
- 3:15back to Paul's description of the armor of God.
- 3:19Where is the spear? John Buckner offers
- 3:22an intriguing possibility: perhaps the spear is
- 3:26missing because the soldier has already thrown it.
- 3:30Paul does not explain why he omitted the spear, so we should
- 3:34be careful not to claim certainty where Scripture is silent.
- 3:38But the picture provides a meaningful illustration.
- 3:41Imagine a Roman soldier standing on the battlefield. His spear has
- 3:45been launched, his shield is raised, his sword
- 3:48is drawn, and the enemy is before him. He's no
- 3:52longer waiting for the battle to begin. He is already in it.
- 3:56And that is certainly true of the Christian life. The Bible never describes
- 4:00following Christ as a life free from conflict.
- 4:04In fact, Scripture repeatedly reminds us that we have a spiritual
- 4:07enemy who seeks to discourage, deceive, and defeat
- 4:11us. Peter warns in 1 Peter 5:8,
- 4:14be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil, as a
- 4:18roaring lion, walketh about seeking whom he may devour.
- 4:22Notice that Peter does not say our adversary might come
- 4:26someday. He describes an enemy who is already active.
- 4:30And Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:12, for we wrestle not against
- 4:35flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the
- 4:39darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
- 4:43The Christian life is not a spectator sport.
- 4:47We are involved in this spiritual conflict whether we
- 4:50recognize it or not. And one of the great dangers
- 4:54for a believer is to live as though there is no battle
- 4:58taking place. Now think about how foolish it would be for
- 5:02a Roman soldier to enter battle without his shield or
- 5:05to lay aside his sword while the enemy approached.
- 5:09Yet, how often do we attempt to face the challenges
- 5:12of life without making use of what God has provided?
- 5:16We encounter temptation, but we neglect the Word of God.
- 5:21We face discouragement, but forget the promises of God.
- 5:25We experience uncertainty, but allow fear to replace faith.
- 5:30We become so occupied with our schedules, responsibilities,
- 5:33and everyday concerns that we forget the spiritual
- 5:37conflict taking place around us, and before long,
- 5:41we find ourselves struggling in areas where God has
- 5:44already provided the resources for victory.
- 5:48Paul's instruction is not to invent new armor or
- 5:52even rely upon our own strength. He tells us
- 5:56to put on what God has already supplied.
- 6:00In Ephesians 6:10, he writes, finally, my brethren,
- 6:03be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
- 6:08That, friend, is where spiritual victory begins.
- 6:12Our strength is not found in our determination,
- 6:15our experience, our ability.
- 6:18Our strength is found in the Lord. We need the
- 6:22truth of God's word to guard us against deception. We need the shield of
- 6:26faith when doubts and fears come against us. We need the assurance
- 6:30of our salvation to protect our mind from the accusations of the
- 6:33enemy. And we need the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God,
- 6:37to answer temptation with truth. The armor
- 6:41is available, but we must put it on.
- 6:45There is another important detail in Paul's description. He repeatedly
- 6:49emphasizes the responsibility to stand.
- 6:53Ephesians 6:13 says, Wherefore take unto
- 6:56you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand
- 7:01in the evil day, and having done all, stand.
- 7:04And the very next verse begins with 2 words: stand therefore.
- 7:09The Christian is not called to surrender territory to the enemy.
- 7:13We are called to remain faithful. There will be days
- 7:17when standing is difficult. There will be seasons when temptations
- 7:22seem unusually strong. There will be seasons when
- 7:25discouragement weighs heavy on our heart, or even
- 7:29when circumstances challenge everything we know to be true about the Lord.
- 7:33But standing does not mean that we never experience difficulty.
- 7:37It means that by the grace of God, we refuse to
- 7:41abandon our confidence in him. We continue believing his word.
- 7:45We continue obeying his commands. We continue
- 7:49trusting his promises, and we continue following
- 7:53Jesus Christ. There's something wonderfully encouraging
- 7:57about this passage. God never commands his children to
- 8:00face the enemy without providing what they need.
- 8:04He knows the battle, he knows the enemy, and he knows our weakness.
- 8:09That is why he tells us to be strong in the Lord.
- 8:13Our confidence is not that we are stronger than Satan. Our confidence
- 8:17is that our Savior is greater than our enemy.
- 8:21At Calvary, Jesus Christ defeated the power of sin and death.
- 8:26Through his resurrection, he demonstrated his victory. And because
- 8:29we belong to him, we can face the spiritual battles of life
- 8:33with confidence in his power. And the next time you read Ephesians
- 8:376, take a moment to picture that Roman soldier. His helmet is
- 8:42in place, his breastplate is secure, his shield is raised,
- 8:45his sword is ready, and perhaps his spear
- 8:49is missing because it has already been thrown. The battle
- 8:53is underway. And then remember this: you do not have
- 8:57to wonder whether you will face spiritual opposition because the battle
- 9:00is already here. The question that we face
- 9:04is whether or not we are standing in the strength and protection God
- 9:07has provided. Don't allow the enemy to find you spiritually
- 9:11unprepared. Open God's word, strengthen your faith,
- 9:15guard your heart, spend time in prayer, and determine
- 9:19by the grace of God to remain faithful to the one who has
- 9:22called you. The same Lord who has called us to stand has
- 9:26promised to supply the strength we need. So,
- 9:31take up the whole armor of God, and having done all,
- 9:35stand. Thank you for traveling with us today
