- 1:41Speaker 2: It's been a couple of Nights on the Coast last
- 1:45Speaker 2: week and I thought that went well and then had
- 1:50Speaker 2: a good weekend at the house, and we'll head to
- 1:54Speaker 2: start well and then Pearl River Resort start well today,
- 1:56Speaker 2: Pearl River Resort tomorrow and go from there until then.
- 2:02Speaker 2: We're gonna have a couple of guests on Today Michigan.
- 2:07Speaker 2: This may sound weird, but when a big athletic director
- 2:09Speaker 2: is going to get fired, Ward Manual's going to get
- 2:13Speaker 2: fired at Michigan or it's uh, we're gonna have Steve
- 2:19Speaker 2: dayson at Michigan podcast. He's actually been one of our
- 2:23Speaker 2: for Michigan. It's it's a big brand. So we can
- 2:25Speaker 2: talk about Ohio State, Michigan, and you know, Miami and
- 2:31Speaker 2: Southern cal Oregon a couple others. But uh, you don't
- 2:35Speaker 2: ever know who's going to take a spot, you know.
- 2:39Speaker 2: So I think it's something that we want to hit.
- 2:43Speaker 2: And somehow, through all their dysfunction, Michigan's been able to
- 2:50Speaker 2: win a national championship in football and a national championship
- 2:53Speaker 2: in basketball. Now Dusty May just left maybe he knew
- 2:56Speaker 2: something now. He also had a good opportunity to go
- 2:59Speaker 2: to Mavericks. I mean, I understand Michigan is a good,
- 3:04Speaker 2: big school, big brand. But when the NBA calls, you're like, dude,
- 3:08Speaker 2: I'll let y'all handle everything. Just give me the put
- 3:11Speaker 2: Now that's a little bit also, you don't know what
- 3:13Speaker 2: front office is going to give you, but you don't
- 3:15Speaker 2: have to worry about nil budget and all that. So
- 3:18Speaker 2: it's a little bit of a Yin yang deal. Okay,
- 3:21Speaker 2: But for our listeners, Dusty May was there, successful basketball coach,
- 3:28Speaker 2: and he just left to go to the NBA. And
- 3:30Speaker 2: Harball just left go the NFL a couple of years ago.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Y'all know that, And they had to fire Sharon Moore.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Last year they hired Kyle Whittingham from Utah. He had
- 3:40Speaker 2: been at Utah since urban Meyer left Utah. Those two
- 3:46Speaker 2: blow me away. Kyle Whittingham had just left Utah and
- 3:50Speaker 2: had been there since urban Meyer left Utah to go
- 3:53Speaker 2: to Florida, kind of like Mike Gundy had been at
- 3:55Speaker 2: Oklahoma State since Les Miles left Oklahoma State to go
- 3:59Speaker 2: to LA. That's a long time. That's crazy this day
- 4:05Speaker 2: and age, no more of you know, Joe Paterno's, Bobby
- 4:09Speaker 2: Bowden's guys that stay places. Gosh, thirty forty years plus.
- 4:18Speaker 2: He's been there since I was late ten, yeah, or
- 4:20Speaker 2: like twelve, yeah, something right around there. Right, absolutely. I
- 4:24Speaker 2: mean so you know when Urban left to go to Florida. Yeah,
- 4:32Speaker 2: I mean Kyle got bumped in one. He won the
- 4:34Speaker 2: whole time out there. They were G five forever and
- 4:37Speaker 2: then they got into the Pac twelve and now they're
- 4:41Speaker 2: in the Big twelve. Yeah. Anyway, Whittingham's a hell of
- 4:44Speaker 2: a coach. I think he'll I think he'll do well.
- 4:47Speaker 2: But there's a lot of unrest at Michigan now with
- 4:50Speaker 2: the I guess the scandal and investigation that broke over
- 4:55Speaker 2: the week. I think this has been going on for
- 4:56Speaker 2: a while. But Ross Dellenser among others, ok It and
- 5:01Speaker 2: Steve Dace at Michigan Podcast is going to come on.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I mean he's been really good over the years on
- 5:08Speaker 2: hardball and co make. I mean, he's a big ten guy, right,
- 5:13Speaker 2: I mean, he just totally threw the Big ten under
- 5:19Speaker 2: the bus when they got cued and pulled their season
- 5:24Speaker 2: in August and didn't call the SEC, and the SEC
- 5:29Speaker 2: stid stood firm because they were going to do with
- 5:32Speaker 2: the NFL. What's going to do with the NFL? Was
- 5:34Speaker 2: always going to play as they should. No one should
- 5:36Speaker 2: have canceled their season in the first place. But but
- 5:39Speaker 2: that days came on and that thing got smoked on
- 5:44Speaker 2: our podcast. He just he's good. He's a crazy man,
- 5:49Speaker 2: but and he's very opinionated, but he's good, all right.
- 5:52Speaker 2: So the Dancing Rabbit golf text line is six oh
- 5:55Speaker 2: one eight eight five three seven seven six six eight
- 6:02Speaker 2: eight five three seven seven six and you can find
- 6:07Speaker 2: us on x at bow bounds tweet twists tweet tweet
- 6:12Speaker 2: x at bo bounds and the michelob Ultra collar line
- 6:16Speaker 2: is six oh one, seven zero seven thirty seven fifty.
- 6:21Speaker 2: So congratulations to all the Mississippi State and Old miss
- 6:24Speaker 2: players that were drafted in the MLB draft. Ace Reese
- 6:30Speaker 2: became a millionaire, Kade Townsend, Taylor Rabe, and there are
- 6:36Speaker 2: others that are getting great money. And you know we
- 6:40Speaker 2: had others get get drafted too, So it's I mean,
- 6:45Speaker 2: that's can you imagine we all dream of that as
- 6:49Speaker 2: a kid. When you play football, basketball, or baseball, you
- 6:53Speaker 2: dream about wearing a pro jersey. You do whoever it is,
- 6:59Speaker 2: for whatever he's in. You get linked in a non
- 7:02Speaker 2: pro market, however, you get linked up with your team.
- 7:05Speaker 2: You dream about playing for that team. You know, now,
- 7:10Speaker 2: Ace Reese gets all kinds of cool Mariner Swack, Caye Townsend,
- 7:15Speaker 2: Chicago Cubs, Taylor Raide, Royals, you know, Ben Davis, Rockies,
- 7:22Speaker 2: and the list goes on and on. So who was
- 7:28Speaker 2: your team? Was it always Boston or was there somebody
- 7:30Speaker 2: else when you were little Socks White Sox? No, it
- 7:34Speaker 2: was Red Sox. Uh okay, yeah, just because of Manny
- 7:38Speaker 2: straight Manny unbelievable, I guess.
- 7:41Speaker 1: No.
- 7:41Speaker 2: No, it was Indians for a couple of years, because
- 7:43Speaker 2: because of Manny, Jim Tomey and Alamoar.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:46Speaker 2: I remember those teams. You know, in the mid nineties,
- 7:49Speaker 2: they were battling the Braves and they'd battle well, the
- 7:52Speaker 2: Yankees and other teams to get there. In fact, they
- 7:56Speaker 2: may have squared off with the Mariners. When Griffy Junior
- 7:59Speaker 2: and a Rod And and those cats were there. They
- 8:03Speaker 2: I know they made they make an alcs I think
- 8:05Speaker 2: they did. I don't think they went, but I think
- 8:08Speaker 2: they made an ac Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I don't
- 8:10Speaker 2: think they went to the World Series either. Of course,
- 8:14Speaker 2: Griffy eventually went to the Reds. As you know, but yeah, okay,
- 8:20Speaker 2: mine growing up Mmmm Cubs, then Braves, who was like
- 8:32Speaker 2: a b I wasn't a Yankees fan. Red Sox was later.
- 8:35Speaker 2: That was once uh Kurt Shilling got there, and then
- 8:39Speaker 2: papal bond I was in. You know it all mine
- 8:42Speaker 2: off spur from having one pair of shorts whenever I
- 8:45Speaker 2: was a kid that had an Indian on the short,
- 8:47Speaker 2: I had one branded pair of shorts major League Baseball
- 8:50Speaker 2: shorts man. My first Cleveland Indians is Eddie Murray. Yeah,
- 8:56Speaker 2: he told about a day ago though I had his
- 8:58Speaker 2: uh baseball cards? You switch hit that well? I don't know.
- 9:04Speaker 2: I mean it could have been a fall fame for
- 9:07Speaker 2: both sides of the plate. It was yeah, yeah, hey
- 9:12Speaker 2: hit us up, ob Nation, We need a roll call.
- 9:16Speaker 2: How are you listening? Where are you listening from? What'd
- 9:18Speaker 2: you do this weekend? You're crazy people. The Dancing Rabbit
- 9:22Speaker 2: golf text line is six oh one eight eight five
- 9:25Speaker 2: three seven seven six Morning drive is driven by your
- 9:29Speaker 2: next GMC Sierra truck at Fouler Fowler, GMC, Pearl Brandon.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Or what's on TOFI board?
- 10:18Speaker 2: Woo? I mean that's a joke to me. Steve Das,
- 10:24Speaker 2: Michigan Wolverine Insider at seven point thirty Michigan. The Michigan
- 10:31Speaker 2: athletic department's been dysfunctional, but they win championships and so
- 10:39Speaker 2: it's like people have still been able to celebrate even
- 10:41Speaker 2: through them tripping all over themselves. You know, John Harball,
- 10:47Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Jim Harball, Johnson, New York. That would be
- 10:52Speaker 2: Jim Harball national championship coach for the Michigan Wolverines. And
- 10:57Speaker 2: then Dusty May with the title this year in hoops
- 11:02Speaker 2: and he's with the Mavericks, right, So Harball moved on
- 11:07Speaker 2: to the Chargers, Dusty May moved on to the Maps.
- 11:12Speaker 2: But we've got a you know, an investigation into Sharon
- 11:18Speaker 2: Moore who got fired last year at Michigan. Okay, and
- 11:23Speaker 2: then they hired Kyle Whittingham. That kind of worked out
- 11:26Speaker 2: for them because Sharon wasn't gonna work out anyway. And
- 11:29Speaker 2: Kyle Whittingham is a legit, big time coach who did
- 11:33Speaker 2: a great job at a place that's you know, it's
- 11:35Speaker 2: not Alabama or LSU or Ohio State. And he won
- 11:39Speaker 2: a bunch of games for years and years and years
- 11:41Speaker 2: at Utah. Dealt Rosstellinger with Yahoo says he did confirm
- 11:49Speaker 2: in his article here manuals this is Ward Manual athletic
- 11:53Speaker 2: director at Michigan. Ward Manual's future is in doubt and
- 11:59Speaker 2: that a board meeting schedule for Thursday when that happened,
- 12:01Speaker 2: is just a matter of how they're going negotiate it
- 12:04Speaker 2: all out. You know, it looks like he's got a
- 12:07Speaker 2: severance package. I think he could retire without being fired
- 12:13Speaker 2: and probably get the thirty six month severance package, or
- 12:17Speaker 2: they'll say we're not gonna pay you that much, we'll
- 12:20Speaker 2: pay you some of it. I think it's two million
- 12:22Speaker 2: a year or two million plus from what I read
- 12:26Speaker 2: last night. I think that was CBS Sports. I'll have
- 12:28Speaker 2: to go back and look here in a minute, but
- 12:31Speaker 2: I mean, you know, so there there's some back and
- 12:33Speaker 2: forth here as to how this could play out with
- 12:37Speaker 2: the Michigan Wolverines Ward Manual afletic director or maybe not
- 12:42Speaker 2: even be anymore. But doesn't look like long. And was
- 12:47Speaker 2: there a cover up? Is what people are asking because
- 12:50Speaker 2: Sharon Moore was fooling around, and you know, now it's
- 12:57Speaker 2: worth noting Michigan reportedly paid twelve million dollars for this
- 13:01Speaker 2: investigation to the Chicago Law firm of Jenner and Block.
- 13:09Speaker 2: So back in December, they conducted an open ended review
- 13:12Speaker 2: of their athletics department the wake of Sharon Moore firing,
- 13:15Speaker 2: slash arrests. And that review is now done and it
- 13:21Speaker 2: looks like Ward Manual didn't do something right and boom.
- 13:26Speaker 2: So that'll be one of the bigger jobs. And that's
- 13:28Speaker 2: the top ten job in the country. They're huge, I
- 13:32Speaker 2: mean the Monster alumni. But y'all know the Drill Monster
- 13:36Speaker 2: alumni base, plenty of money all that stuff. So in
- 13:40Speaker 2: the Big Ten, there's two money conferences. We have two
- 13:43Speaker 2: power super leagues. People talk about super leagues. I'm like, dude,
- 13:46Speaker 2: we already have two super leagues. It's called the SEC
- 13:49Speaker 2: and the Big Ten. We have two super leagues. And
- 13:55Speaker 2: but anyway, someone man's gonna make a mistake and get
- 13:58Speaker 2: paid multiple bill If there's not an out then then
- 14:05Speaker 2: he will. Nowadays, I think we'll have a lot more
- 14:09Speaker 2: Steve Days, Michigan Insider will have a lot more to
- 14:11Speaker 2: offer in about well. In the next segment, just Ross
- 14:15Speaker 2: by York and his way to the top baby failing upwards. Yeah,
- 14:19Speaker 2: I mean Ross Bjork is at Ohio State. That's arguably
- 14:22Speaker 2: the best job in the country. And that's incredible considering
- 14:28Speaker 2: Ole miss and really, what do you do it? A
- 14:31Speaker 2: and M. But but hey, give him credit. He's making
- 14:35Speaker 2: two million dollars a year running an athletic department that
- 14:38Speaker 2: is that is on cruise control. Because that's a beast too.
- 14:44Speaker 2: And there, remember I referenced Ohio State in LSU and Georgia.
- 14:47Speaker 2: They're the only game in town in their state. Dude,
- 14:53Speaker 2: other than pro sports that didn't get any account the
- 14:55Speaker 2: Reds and the Browns and they're still the only one. Okay, yeah,
- 15:01Speaker 2: I mean they're the winner. Sure, I know the Cavs
- 15:03Speaker 2: turn it around a little bit so on, but you
- 15:05Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, the Reds have decided to poop
- 15:08Speaker 2: on themselves. And we know the Browns don't like winning.
- 15:12Speaker 2: They like drafting in the top five best part of
- 15:15Speaker 2: their year. You think Chuck Mullins would be mad at
- 15:18Speaker 2: me for saying that they don't like winning. It's like
- 15:22Speaker 2: Mississippi State football, they don't like winning. You know, Let's
- 15:26Speaker 2: let's make it as hard as we hold on. We
- 15:31Speaker 2: have a we have to hire a coach. Let's make
- 15:34Speaker 2: sure not to hire a sitting head coach. Or one
- 15:36Speaker 2: with a lot of coordinator experience. Okay, we got it
- 15:40Speaker 2: on three good anyway, we're gonna Oh, I've got Crocodile
- 15:49Speaker 2: Dundee on the Dancing Rabbit Golf text line. So Jordan
- 15:55Speaker 2: textas six to oh one eight eight five three seven
- 16:01Speaker 2: seven six, And this crazy son of a gun is
- 16:05Speaker 2: streaming the show. He's all night twenty headed to Dallas
- 16:11Speaker 2: and he's going on an air boat ride to scout
- 16:14Speaker 2: for gators. So I text him back on the Dancing
- 16:19Speaker 2: Rabbit Golf text line and I said, you're our crocodile
- 16:23Speaker 2: Dundee on the show. And then he threw up a
- 16:28Speaker 2: crocodile Dundee picture or mean whatever it is. People do
- 16:35Speaker 2: this on our text line. Yeah, they go scouting. They
- 16:38Speaker 2: go scouting. Man, I mean, I guess you gotta go
- 16:41Speaker 2: scouting before you go hunting, right, bar two?
- 16:44Speaker 1: Right.
- 16:46Speaker 2: I'm sure they you know, because he told me he
- 16:48Speaker 2: was going scouting for he's starting the process, but he
- 16:52Speaker 2: won't he won't elk hunt until I think the second
- 16:56Speaker 2: or third weekend in September. He lets him get thief,
- 17:01Speaker 2: well else lets him get big. Oh, okay, thick three
- 17:06Speaker 2: c's okay, These gators are Why the world would he
- 17:10Speaker 2: do this? I don't know, but he's sending us pictures
- 17:14Speaker 2: of gators all around his boat. Well, these guys are crazy.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Then b Rad is in San Antonio. Maybe they'll meet up.
- 17:24Speaker 2: They can hit a text MEXS place or something, but
- 17:27Speaker 2: they can do a an out of Bounds on remote
- 17:29Speaker 2: podcast like that. B rads listening on the on the app,
- 17:34Speaker 2: the out of Bounds Radio app. We would highly recommend
- 17:37Speaker 2: you downloading it so you can listen to the show
- 17:39Speaker 2: anytime anywhere in town, out of town, in the gym,
- 17:43Speaker 2: in the shower, in your backyard. That's not a bad
- 17:46Speaker 2: place to be. B rad is in San Antonio, Texas.
- 17:50Speaker 2: One of my favorite cities. Yeah, it is home to
- 17:55Speaker 2: one of our favorite listeners, Brad. Don't know if he
- 18:00Speaker 2: loves it. Oh no, no, no, no, no, not saying we love him.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, we got solid guy. But
- 18:08Speaker 2: he may love it. I don't I don't know. Oh man,
- 18:13Speaker 2: would you get one of the mareboats? I probably would,
- 18:17Speaker 2: But I mean it's not something that I'm probably gonna do.
- 18:20Speaker 2: It's not gonna be on the it's not gonna make
- 18:23Speaker 2: the list of something I'm gonna do an airboat is
- 18:26Speaker 2: not maybe maybe not swamp toward it? Yeah, sure, heartbeat, Yeah,
- 18:34Speaker 2: I'm not taking one of these. You want to go
- 18:35Speaker 2: down in the deep Louisiana marshes in there, it's where
- 18:37Speaker 2: they're doing them drag races at are they? What if
- 18:41Speaker 2: you fall out and then there's a gator? I mean,
- 18:44Speaker 2: that's that's that's got to be a real concern. Yeah. Uh.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Steve Das, Michigan Insider at Michigan Podcast. The latest out
- 18:55Speaker 2: of ann Arbor, Michigan. It looks like they're athletic director
- 19:01Speaker 2: is toast Ward Manual and they did a review of
- 19:06Speaker 2: their athletic department and they found something that they didn't like.

- 21:22Speaker 2: really not. I mean, it's just it's food to get full.
- 21:27Speaker 2: I mean it's not It's not food that you go,
- 21:30Speaker 2: oh wow, that's amazing, you know. I mean, look, if

- 21:46Speaker 2: It's frank and beans or beans and franks according to this,
- 21:51Speaker 2: I thought it was always franken beans, but anyway, this

- 23:56Speaker 2: Steve Dace at Michigan Podcast. He's joined us several times
- 24:01Speaker 2: over the years. Certain things going on, and Steve Das,
- 24:06Speaker 2: you're plugged into Michigan for a while. Now, did you
- 24:10Speaker 2: see Athletic Director Ward Manuals Auster coming or did this
- 24:15Speaker 2: catch you off guard?
- 24:18Speaker 3: I didn't catch me off guard at all. I thought
- 24:21Speaker 3: it was fifty to fifty and it was going to
- 24:23Speaker 3: be pretty much tied to whether the Page Shriver report
- 24:29Speaker 3: was going to come out or not, the Athletic director
- 24:33Speaker 3: investigation or the athletic department investigation that was initiated back
- 24:37Speaker 3: in January, which Ward helped himself to initiate, by the way.
- 24:40Speaker 3: But I figured it was going to be tied to
- 24:43Speaker 3: whether that report bo ever came out or not, you know,
- 24:48Speaker 3: kind of you know, it's just it's very interesting to
- 24:51Speaker 3: watch universities consider themselves paragons of progressive virtue, like the
- 24:59Speaker 3: University of no Again, it's very interesting to watch them
- 25:01Speaker 3: operate because, you know, we had a former president here,
- 25:06Speaker 3: Mark Schlissel, who tried to use every ounce of power
- 25:10Speaker 3: he had to shut down the twenty twenty college football
- 25:12Speaker 3: season during COVID to demonstrate as a medical professional, you know,
- 25:17Speaker 3: his virtue and concern for the student athletes. At the
- 25:22Speaker 3: same time, he was carrying on an ilsted affair with
- 25:24Speaker 3: a supportin at the university and eventually lost his job.
- 25:27Speaker 3: Something that's kind of page one in the Manuel at
- 25:31Speaker 3: the university. And it'll do the it will always do
- 25:38Speaker 3: the right thing once it is eventually forced to. And
- 25:42Speaker 3: that's kind of been how it's operated now for a
- 25:45Speaker 3: couple of decades on multiple fronts. It's really been sadly
- 25:49Speaker 3: how things have operated kind of pretty much since bo
- 25:52Speaker 3: died in two thousand and six. Wow, And I and
- 25:55Speaker 3: I think that that's a couple of decades now, you know.
- 25:59Speaker 3: And so I think it was going to come down
- 26:01Speaker 3: to this report. If the report was going to be
- 26:03Speaker 3: forced out, then I thought Ward would be forced out.
- 26:06Speaker 3: If they could bury the report, then he could probably
- 26:08Speaker 3: survive a little bit longer. She's going to force the
- 26:11Speaker 3: report out. She's got a foil lawsuit going on against
- 26:15Speaker 3: the university. Michigan loses. These foil lossters like all the time,
- 26:18Speaker 3: they always try to bury stuff like this, and this
- 26:21Speaker 3: time it's going to come out. And I think that
- 26:23Speaker 3: you're seeing an embattled group board of regents in the
- 26:26Speaker 3: state now trying to get ahead of it. And they're
- 26:30Speaker 3: negotiating a buyout, which essentially are probably the terms of
- 26:33Speaker 3: Ward's NDA. We're being honest and let's just all move on.
- 26:40Speaker 2: So Steve Days, Michigan Insider on the Farm Bureau Insurance
- 26:45Speaker 2: guest line. They fired Sharon More last year through all
- 26:51Speaker 2: of those you know, indiscretions, and then they hired Kyle Whittingham,
- 26:56Speaker 2: and as Steve Days said, they signed on and block.
- 27:00Speaker 2: A law firm out of Chicago paid twelve million to
- 27:03Speaker 2: do this open investigation of the athletic Department and evidently
- 27:07Speaker 2: Ward manual did X, Y and Z wrong. Do you
- 27:12Speaker 2: believe that he will I saw the thirty six month
- 27:15Speaker 2: buy out. Do you believe that he will receive his
- 27:18Speaker 2: buy out? Or there's enough in the report investigation to
- 27:23Speaker 2: get Michigan off the hook of whatever that is, two
- 27:26Speaker 2: million plus a year.
- 27:28Speaker 3: I think that Ward. I think Ward will be given
- 27:34Speaker 3: ample compensation for both the momentous success that Michigan had
- 27:41Speaker 3: at times in all kinds of sports. I think every
- 27:43Speaker 3: sport at Michigan's won a Big Ten championship or thereabouts
- 27:47Speaker 3: since he came on board. I think he'll be given
- 27:52Speaker 3: financial recognition. I'll put it for the success that's been
- 27:56Speaker 3: demonstrated on the field of play, and also for his
- 28:00Speaker 3: ongoing assistance and not being a material witness I think
- 28:06Speaker 3: is likely going to happen.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, So I wish, you know, for Michigan
- 28:16Speaker 2: to be you just said it, for Michigan to be
- 28:19Speaker 2: as dysfunctional as they are at times, both academically and athletically,
- 28:23Speaker 2: and a powerhouse at the same time. And yet when
- 28:27Speaker 2: national titles in sports that matter like hardball and football
- 28:30Speaker 2: and Dusty May in basketball. I mean, that's what's incredible
- 28:33Speaker 2: to me, Steve. Does that surprise you considering everything you know?
- 28:38Speaker 3: I mean it does, But is it really incredible to you?
- 28:41Speaker 3: But Bo, you're in the sec You guys have done
- 28:43Speaker 3: this all our lives, you know, I mean, you know,
- 28:47Speaker 3: so I think what's different is you guys are just
- 28:50Speaker 3: more honest, all right. And there's no there's no virtue
- 28:58Speaker 3: signaling in your neck of the woods about this, and
- 29:04Speaker 3: there's at least some honor among fees. I guess I'll
- 29:06Speaker 3: put it, you know, a prison code up here. I
- 29:09Speaker 3: think that what's what makes this really much more unlikable
- 29:14Speaker 3: when the school like Michigan does it, frankly, is again
- 29:17Speaker 3: they want to parade around progressive virtue and then at
- 29:23Speaker 3: the same time they then want to maybe go right
- 29:28Speaker 3: up to you know, not up to quite the line
- 29:31Speaker 3: that you know, an Alabama would have gone to, you know,
- 29:35Speaker 3: or in the eighties and nineties or a myriad of
- 29:39Speaker 3: SEC programs, and then claim, okay, because we didn't go
- 29:42Speaker 3: over that line with how much better a people we are,
- 29:46Speaker 3: and and and and and and that's just that's it's
- 29:48Speaker 3: a croc. And what's what's sad about it is number one,
- 29:51Speaker 3: the there's just an immense amount of high quality student
- 29:55Speaker 3: athletes that come out of the Michigan programs, you know,
- 29:58Speaker 3: which you're what You're not gonna find it. There's been
- 30:00Speaker 3: so many problems surrounding that twenty twenty three football team,
- 30:05Speaker 3: none of them really involved any of the players, they're
- 30:07Speaker 3: almost all upstanding guys. They're almost all very likable guys.
- 30:12Speaker 3: I mean, Blake Koram Is, you know, his nickname could
- 30:15Speaker 3: be son in law. Like every father in America wants
- 30:19Speaker 3: their daughter to bring Blake koram home for a husband. Okay,
- 30:22Speaker 3: you know for a bow and a lot of the
- 30:26Speaker 3: hits that Michigan has taken are for guys like Matt Weiss,
- 30:29Speaker 3: how he passed any betting process to be a total creeper,
- 30:33Speaker 3: and yet he wasn't good at his job, you know.
- 30:37Speaker 3: I mean, if a Penn State's gould to look the
- 30:38Speaker 3: other way at Jerry Sandusky for decades, Jerry Sandusky was
- 30:41Speaker 3: once one of the best defensive coordinators in college football.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Michigan's doing this for guys like LaTroy Lewis, who gets
- 30:48Speaker 3: found out after he leaves to go join the Atlanta Falcons.
- 30:52Speaker 3: For Matt Weiss, who even players on the team thought
- 30:56Speaker 3: was odd and weird and offered nothing and no idea
- 30:59Speaker 3: where he came from or what he was doing. And
- 31:01Speaker 3: they actually had a better offense after he got busted
- 31:04Speaker 3: and had his title taken away from him. You know,
- 31:08Speaker 3: it was very clear watching the product on the field
- 31:11Speaker 3: last year they were going to go nine to three
- 31:13Speaker 3: just because they were that much physically more talented than
- 31:16Speaker 3: nine opponents. When they played three teams that could punch back,
- 31:19Speaker 3: they completely fell apart. And yet Sharon Moore would still
- 31:22Speaker 3: be the coach here right now if Page had not
- 31:24Speaker 3: come forward, which is got to blow your mind. Okay,
- 31:28Speaker 3: And so one thing about Michigan is Michigan is great
- 31:34Speaker 3: at producing greatness and great for taking hits to its
- 31:38Speaker 3: reputation for people who frankly just aren't worth it. And
- 31:42Speaker 3: it's been Juwan Howard. How many times was he permitted
- 31:45Speaker 3: to act out while we're going like seventeen and fourteen
- 31:48Speaker 3: in the regular season? Why why? It's really just truly,
- 31:53Speaker 3: it's just truly mystifying. And it makes you kind of
- 31:56Speaker 3: think that if they ever actually took maybe some of
- 31:59Speaker 3: their own talking points more seriously about being leaders and
- 32:03Speaker 3: best and demanding their autocracy and high performance and integrity
- 32:09Speaker 3: along with those resources. I mean, you noted, how with
- 32:12Speaker 3: how good we do and we're not doing that much
- 32:14Speaker 3: better would be if we actually did so, Yes.
- 32:17Speaker 2: Steve Dace, Michigan Insider, Uh, they're going to fire their
- 32:21Speaker 2: athletic director this week, and they fired their football coach
- 32:25Speaker 2: last year who was involved in a scandal. Now, the
- 32:30Speaker 2: interesting thing part of this is they upgraded massively. Kyle
- 32:34Speaker 2: Whittingham can flat out coach uh. I mean, he did
- 32:36Speaker 2: an incredible job at Utah, which is not Michigan or
- 32:40Speaker 2: Georgia or so on, and they're still Michigan. They trip
- 32:43Speaker 2: over really good coaches. I mean, Dusty May just left
- 32:45Speaker 2: for the Mavericks have to winning a national title. So dysfunctional,
- 32:49Speaker 2: yet still always going to bring in talented players because
- 32:51Speaker 2: of the brand in the massive alumni based Steve Das
- 32:55Speaker 2: on the Farm Bureau Insurance guest line. So, how did
- 32:58Speaker 2: you just kind of walked us through a couple of
- 32:59Speaker 2: things with the Michigan football program. How is somebody who
- 33:05Speaker 2: loves the Michigan Wolverines. How do you look at Jim
- 33:09Speaker 2: Harball after his tenure in Michigan and everything that he
- 33:15Speaker 2: gave y'all, that was great, but then some of the
- 33:18Speaker 2: turmoil and scandals.
- 33:21Speaker 3: The biggest thing I would say about Jim and I
- 33:26Speaker 3: could care less about Burgergate or any o. The rest
- 33:30Speaker 3: of that. I just don't care, and neither does anybody else.
- 33:34Speaker 3: And I think a lot of that stuff was blown
- 33:36Speaker 3: out of proportion because Jim was the most high profile
- 33:42Speaker 3: person messaging things about we need to create a transfer
- 33:45Speaker 3: portal player compensation at the time that the NCA was
- 33:50Speaker 3: in its death rows trying to fight that stuff. And
- 33:53Speaker 3: I just think the NCA largely detested him. But what
- 33:56Speaker 3: I would fallt Jim for and I think that this
- 34:00Speaker 3: was done wrong in the Connor Stallion's affair also is
- 34:04Speaker 3: instead of saying things like I don't recall if I
- 34:09Speaker 3: bought those kids a burger after the Wisconsin game when
- 34:13Speaker 3: they came up here for on that when they can
- 34:15Speaker 3: when them and their families came up here to show
- 34:17Speaker 3: support for me when I was very in battled and
- 34:20Speaker 3: there was talks about getting rid of me during the
- 34:23Speaker 3: COVID season, I don't recall if I bought them a
- 34:25Speaker 3: burger at breakfast at at one of the m spots
- 34:28Speaker 3: the next day, what I fault him for, because that's
- 34:31Speaker 3: the kind of stuff. You know, I don't be a
- 34:35Speaker 3: very provocative leader. And then when when the system comes
- 34:40Speaker 3: back at you for trying to confront it, then try to,
- 34:44Speaker 3: you know, use some political legalies. Okay, When I when
- 34:48Speaker 3: I would have would have been very fascinating and should
- 34:50Speaker 3: it would have been way more preferable, is if Chim
- 34:53Speaker 3: would have just simply said, hell, yeah, okay, you guys
- 34:56Speaker 3: won't do anything to police all these under the table.
- 35:00Speaker 3: As for years, I got to find I got to
- 35:02Speaker 3: I've got to figure out what I could possibly do
- 35:05Speaker 3: right to recruit when I've got Clemson calling Rashaun gary
- 35:08Speaker 3: Go' signing day just as he's about to go on
- 35:11Speaker 3: ESPN to announce his commitment and offered him four hundred
- 35:14Speaker 3: grand all right to to you know, to sign to
- 35:17Speaker 3: switch his commitment five minutes after two years of recruiting.
- 35:20Speaker 3: Maybe goes down the drain. You bet your ass. I'm
- 35:23Speaker 3: trying to find every last advantage I can because you
- 35:25Speaker 3: guys don't enforce your own rules, so I don't owe
- 35:28Speaker 3: you Jack Squatt. In other words, my point is there
- 35:31Speaker 3: were opportunities here to own the moment. I thought that,
- 35:36Speaker 3: I thought that the condor Stallion's case should have never
- 35:38Speaker 3: ever been argued on any grounds other than what rule
- 35:42Speaker 3: here was actually broken? What rule? It's not against the
- 35:46Speaker 3: rules to steal signs? And yet this whole thing is
- 35:49Speaker 3: called a sign stealing scandal, So what was the rule.
- 35:52Speaker 3: Oh well, people went there in person. So in other words,
- 35:55Speaker 3: people walk into a stadium in a public event utilizing device.
- 36:00Speaker 3: Is that everyone in the stadium currently has. That's your
- 36:03Speaker 3: big scandal. You're so now everybody that sits in there
- 36:06Speaker 3: with a phone and put and puts any amount of
- 36:08Speaker 3: film that they just up on a Twitter feed or
- 36:11Speaker 3: a website, which a million people do every week, that's
- 36:13Speaker 3: now an NCAA violation. I mean, my point being is
- 36:17Speaker 3: there was there were moments here to call to mister
- 36:21Speaker 3: Smith goes to Washington, the system and Michigan. Michigan failed
- 36:26Speaker 3: to do that every single time, and then and and
- 36:29Speaker 3: and and tried to hide behind like legal ease and
- 36:31Speaker 3: get cute with it and find you know, you know,
- 36:34Speaker 3: a fanciful attempts to you know, uh uh, you know,
- 36:39Speaker 3: to put massagic and then ended up just harming its
- 36:43Speaker 3: own integrity in those situations all the more when I
- 36:46Speaker 3: thought what they should have done is actually challenge the
- 36:48Speaker 3: merits of the system in and of itself, and I
- 36:51Speaker 3: thought they would have become I think, you know, in
- 36:53Speaker 3: many more respects more full hero okay than than scandal.
- 36:57Speaker 3: But they didn't do that, And maybe now we're learning.
- 37:00Speaker 3: One of the reasons that they didn't do that that
- 37:02Speaker 3: there were other things happening under the under the under
- 37:05Speaker 3: our noses we didn't know about, like what was really
- 37:08Speaker 3: going on in Sharon Moore's private life and things of
- 37:10Speaker 3: that nature. Right, And so you know, I work in
- 37:12Speaker 3: politics full time, and I can just tell everybody in
- 37:15Speaker 3: your audience when a politician, I don't sure what party
- 37:18Speaker 3: they're from, when there's an obvious principled play to make,
- 37:23Speaker 3: and they won't make it, I can promise you it's
- 37:25Speaker 3: ninety nine percent because there's something else going on in
- 37:28Speaker 3: their lives and they're in their campaigns that they don't
- 37:31Speaker 3: want to come out, and so they don't think they
- 37:33Speaker 3: have the moral standing to do this. So they're trying
- 37:36Speaker 3: rather than being exposed somewhere else, and so they're attempting
- 37:39Speaker 3: to find to be cute in a way that obviously
- 37:43Speaker 3: isn't going to be successful. And I think ultimately that's
- 37:46Speaker 3: what happened here at Michigan is there were it's not
- 37:49Speaker 3: the stuff upfront conor Burger Gate that you know shows
- 37:53Speaker 3: like yours around the country talk about. That was that
- 37:56Speaker 3: was essentially the undoing of a reputation here but it's
- 37:59Speaker 3: the stuff that came out later, like about Sharon Moore,
- 38:03Speaker 3: that was really the real In Matt Weiss, those things
- 38:05Speaker 3: were the real problems and the real reasons why they
- 38:08Speaker 3: didn't take a more forthright stance against those things, those
- 38:11Speaker 3: other things than in the grand scheme of things. All right,
- 38:13Speaker 3: whether it's stealing signs or paying burgers to a kid
- 38:17Speaker 3: for buying burgers for a kid at breakfast the morning
- 38:19Speaker 3: after an illicit recruiting trip, that stuff doesn't do, isn't
- 38:23Speaker 3: it doesn't mean Jack Squatt, but it became quite meaningful
- 38:27Speaker 3: because of the stuff we found out later was actually
- 38:29Speaker 3: going on underneath the surface.
- 38:30Speaker 2: Okay, And so Michigan will make a new hire. It's
- 38:34Speaker 2: one of the it's a top ten job in the
- 38:36Speaker 2: country and things, and you do have a better football
- 38:42Speaker 2: coach and things will march on the.
- 38:45Speaker 3: Perfect time to do this now. But we have a
- 38:47Speaker 3: grown man, an adult. He can essentially be the associate
- 38:50Speaker 3: ad in charge of football for the next you know,
- 38:52Speaker 3: twelve to twenty four months, so Michigan can find the
- 38:55Speaker 3: new president, the new ad. You have a basketball coach
- 38:58Speaker 3: who has really no contract at all, and an extremely
- 39:02Speaker 3: talented roster still This has got to be a top
- 39:05Speaker 3: ten starting five in college basketball next season. The entire
- 39:08Speaker 3: roster that Dusty recruited is intact, so you know you'll
- 39:12Speaker 3: get he'll get a chance to prove himself. I mean,
- 39:14Speaker 3: if he can't at least get to the second weekend
- 39:18Speaker 3: to the nca Tournament and a top four double by
- 39:21Speaker 3: finish in the Big Ten with this roster, then he's
- 39:24Speaker 3: Mike Boyton who failed at Oklahoma State. And you just
- 39:26Speaker 3: move on very quickly and it's painless and doesn't cost
- 39:29Speaker 3: you anything. So this is really kind of the ideal
- 39:33Speaker 3: time to reassess your athletic department, fumigate the last remaining places,
- 39:39Speaker 3: and bring in your new general. I mean, Michigan will
- 39:41Speaker 3: fail up here, just like what happened with Sharon Moore.
- 39:44Speaker 3: That's going to end up being the most successful sex
- 39:46Speaker 3: scandal in the history of American enterprise. I mean, we
- 39:50Speaker 3: upgraded from Sharon Moore to a guy bounce to the
- 39:52Speaker 3: Hall of Fame with a major chip on his shoulder,
- 39:55Speaker 3: and we're going to really upgrade here at athletic director too.
- 39:58Speaker 3: So it is amazing. Sometimes Michigan will still manage to
- 40:01Speaker 3: fail out.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Incredible. Steve Dace at Michigan Podcast on Twitter. Michigan Insider
- 40:08Speaker 2: on the Out of Bounds Show. Steve, thanks so much, man.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Hope you're having a good summer. We'll talk soon.
- 40:13Speaker 3: You got a brother, God bless he's awesome.
- 40:16Speaker 2: Steve Dace, Michigan Insider on the Out of Bound Show.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Michigan will fire their athletic director if they haven't already
- 40:23Speaker 2: this week after a twelve million dollar investigation into their
- 40:28Speaker 2: athletic department by law firm in Chicago because of what
- 40:33Speaker 2: happened last year with the Sharon Moore paid Shivers scandal
- 40:41Speaker 2: and then eventual lawsuit from paid Shivers. Okay, and so
- 40:47Speaker 2: Sharon Moore is gone. You all know that, Not that
- 40:50Speaker 2: you ever really got to know him. He was only
- 40:51Speaker 2: there for five minutes. Harball left to go the Chargers.
- 40:55Speaker 2: They promoted from within. He wasn't ready, Plus he had
- 40:58Speaker 2: all this stuff going on. Now. Dace does make a
- 41:02Speaker 2: good point about failing up on this thing. They just
- 41:05Speaker 2: brought in a Hall of Fame coach and a guy
- 41:07Speaker 2: named Kyle Whittingham from Utah who has been witting at
- 41:11Speaker 2: Utah since urban Meyer left Utah to go to Florida.
- 41:16Speaker 2: I mean He's just a dude, big, big trench play guy.
- 41:20Speaker 2: Y'all know when you did watch Utah, some of you never,
- 41:24Speaker 2: some of you occasionally, but they were I mean, physical, sound,
- 41:30Speaker 2: line of scrimmage, offensive line. You had a lot of
- 41:34Speaker 2: sec right mojo and blood in their program. I mean
- 41:39Speaker 2: he believed in physicality and and kicking your you know
- 41:43Speaker 2: what and all that stuff. So I think, I mean,
- 41:46Speaker 2: Michigan's always going to be the number two recruiter in
- 41:50Speaker 2: the Big ten majority of the time. Every now and
- 41:54Speaker 2: then maybe the number one now and then maybe the
- 41:56Speaker 2: number three, depending on what Penn State's doing. But right
- 41:59Speaker 2: that they're gonna be in the top one percent of
- 42:01Speaker 2: football recruiting every year. They can knock down a number
- 42:04Speaker 2: four or number eight class in with their eyes closed,
- 42:09Speaker 2: and they've got more money than God. So and they
- 42:12Speaker 2: won with all that dysfunction and you know, the driven
- 42:16Speaker 2: by progressive virtues and all that stuff because of who
- 42:22Speaker 2: they are. And Harball is one of the best ever
- 42:26Speaker 2: coach college football. I mean he won at San Diego,
- 42:29Speaker 2: not San Diego State. Harball won at San Diego. They
- 42:32Speaker 2: had no scholarships. He went to Stanford. They were awful.
- 42:37Speaker 2: The twenty years prior to his arrival. He won. Now
- 42:40Speaker 2: they're awful again. You see the tie. He goes to Michigan.
- 42:43Speaker 2: They can never get over the hump in the modern
- 42:45Speaker 2: day Okay, I throw out the ninety seven thing. They
