- 0:02Speaker 1: Ladies, gentlemen, Welcome to another episode Up the Bust, one
- 0:04Speaker 1: with the Boys Spring Tour. We are with Coach dilling Ham.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Let's talk about Chevy for a second. Chevrolet the most durable,
- 0:10Speaker 1: reliable vehicle on the market. Chevrolet is a trusted company
- 0:14Speaker 1: that has been innovating for the past one hundred years.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Up to now, most electric vehicles have been either too expensive,
- 0:18Speaker 1: too small, too or too limited in capabilities for most people.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Chevrolet is committed to making EV's available for all Americans.
- 0:26Speaker 1: There's a growing network public charging stations. There are over
- 0:29Speaker 1: nineteen hundred certified Chevy EV dealerships. Chevy has convenient ways
- 0:33Speaker 1: to research and shop EV's online. EV's for everyone everywhere.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Do you want to talk about it?
- 0:40Speaker 2: Do you want to talk about what just happened out there?
- 0:43Speaker 2: You guys are seeing the first few interviews. I assume
- 0:45Speaker 2: that's how we're gonna drop them. Yeah, but this one
- 0:47Speaker 2: last battle the Boys Spring Game champions That.
- 0:51Speaker 3: One hurts, too, hurts. I'll tell you.
- 0:55Speaker 1: I'm never won in ASU Stadium. I'm never won in
- 0:58Speaker 1: Sun Devil Stadium.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Ever.
- 1:00Speaker 1: I've state championship dumb Me thirty eight to zero. Buffalo
- 1:03Speaker 1: Wallwing's Bowl dB me like forty four thirteen against Kansas State,
- 1:07Speaker 1: but this one hurts the most. A state championship and
- 1:10Speaker 1: a bowl game, and this one hurts the most. Go
- 1:13Speaker 1: back to Arizona where I'm from, Shaptown coach to him,
- 1:17Speaker 1: goes to Chaptown, Charlie Rago's my head coach, and it's like,
- 1:20Speaker 1: I legit thought you guys were gonna really make it
- 1:23Speaker 1: so I could win.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Yeah, where about character?
- 1:26Speaker 3: Yeah? I needed to win the other day.
- 1:28Speaker 2: I lost this quarterback challenge and like you can just
- 1:31Speaker 2: tell Taylor and I low key are.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Super competitive against each other. Irided about that quarterback challenge.
- 1:36Speaker 3: I do have that, Yeah, you do have that.
- 1:38Speaker 2: And low Key when we put the headsets on everything,
- 1:40Speaker 2: I'm just telling the boys, like, hey, we gotta win
- 1:43Speaker 2: this fucking game.
- 1:44Speaker 3: You guys understand that.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Right, I've been catching too many w's, Dude, I feel
- 1:47Speaker 1: like l was in my future.
- 1:49Speaker 3: How to take one? Yeah? What was it?
- 1:51Speaker 2: At the end seventeen fifteen and they're fucking I'm kneeling
- 1:54Speaker 2: at the coordinator.
- 1:54Speaker 3: I'm like, no, we're not taking a knee. We're running
- 1:56Speaker 3: the ball.
- 1:57Speaker 2: He's like my boss, saying, my boss said, we're taking
- 2:01Speaker 2: a knee, and so I run up the middle the field.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I'm like, hey, we want to score, and he's like,
- 2:04Speaker 2: go ahead, go score. Like what do you want to do?
- 2:06Speaker 2: And the guy was like in the knee formation or
- 2:08Speaker 2: victory formation. I'm like, score, just run a play and
- 2:11Speaker 2: score and he's like, hey, I'll throw you a fade.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Now that happened, I.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Know because as soon as we new Year's an knee,
- 2:17Speaker 3: and I really thought to myself, was gonna go try
- 2:18Speaker 3: to run this thing up because it was in the red.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Day carline, I know. I was like, no, wait a minute,
- 2:26Speaker 2: We're not taking a knee. We gotta run this thing up.
- 2:28Speaker 2: He caught it too, dude, he did catch it. I
- 2:31Speaker 2: was gonna caught the ice bath.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Oh was that? I thought that was sweat? I thought
- 2:35Speaker 3: that was the start the start of a coaching career
- 2:38Speaker 3: one and oh I would not be a good coach.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I found that out today.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Your coaches trying to take over for me, like you
- 2:43Speaker 1: called the place, but yeah, let me get this play
- 2:45Speaker 1: and they call one, and then all of a sudden
- 2:46Speaker 1: they start calling the place. I'm like, hey, hey, what's
- 2:48Speaker 1: the play, And the coach wouldn't.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Listen to me. He would just be like, just say,
- 2:52Speaker 3: I probably called two plays.
- 2:54Speaker 5: Yeah, that was probably why they didn't win. I mean
- 2:56Speaker 5: to be honest, if they were to listen to you,
- 2:58Speaker 5: I mean nothing like that.
- 2:59Speaker 1: I like the sound. That's a good way for me
- 3:00Speaker 1: to spend it. I would agree with a good way
- 3:01Speaker 1: for me to spend it. But hey, we're in Tempee,
- 3:04Speaker 1: your home. You grew up here, You've been in so
- 3:06Speaker 1: many prestigious programs. We were talking about this a little
- 3:08Speaker 1: bit before we came on camera. Is historically rich traditions
- 3:13Speaker 1: at Florida State, Oregon, Auburn, and you come here and
- 3:16Speaker 1: let's call a spata spat it's not. And so how
- 3:18Speaker 1: do you compete with those other colleges that have all
- 3:22Speaker 1: that history and tradition to say, hey come here.
- 3:24Speaker 5: Well, I think you just look at it and tradition
- 3:26Speaker 5: is just something that happened in the past, has no
- 3:29Speaker 5: effect in the future, right. But what happens is social
- 3:31Speaker 5: media nowadays drives where kids believe they can go to school.
- 3:35Speaker 5: So I believe I can only go to a school
- 3:37Speaker 5: that ESPN tells me is of an elite status, and
- 3:42Speaker 5: they choose those schools were in reality, if twenty five
- 3:45Speaker 5: of the best players just choose to come here three
- 3:48Speaker 5: years in a row, our roster would be top five
- 3:51Speaker 5: in the country.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Very very simple.
- 3:53Speaker 5: So people need to stop living in this bubble that
- 3:55Speaker 5: only certain places can win and come to a place
- 3:58Speaker 5: that it's seventy degree in April, sixty degrees in June. Right,
- 4:02Speaker 5: they bring the Super Bowl here, they bring the waste
- 4:04Speaker 5: management open, they bring tons of concerts for tired athletes
- 4:07Speaker 5: to move here. Right, Why would you not live here
- 4:10Speaker 5: in a place that's the fifth largest market in the country.
- 4:12Speaker 5: We have a player who has his own podcast, Right,
- 4:15Speaker 5: why would you not choose to come here?
- 4:18Speaker 3: Right?
- 4:18Speaker 5: Just because we may not have the tradition in nineteen
- 4:21Speaker 5: ninety six, Right, that's so short minded. We're trying to
- 4:25Speaker 5: teach people, Right, we can be the tradition. Come here
- 4:29Speaker 5: and be the tradition twenty years from now.
- 4:31Speaker 3: How do you sell them on that?
- 4:32Speaker 2: When you walk around and obviously your facilities, Like we
- 4:35Speaker 2: talk about tradition everything else, but even facility wise, and
- 4:38Speaker 2: walking around, you can just tell that money isn't poured
- 4:41Speaker 2: into this place yet.
- 4:42Speaker 4: No question. And you know the places I've been this is.
- 4:44Speaker 3: There's some spots I have.
- 4:46Speaker 5: This is actually probably the middle of the road facilities
- 4:50Speaker 5: of the places I've been at Shockley enough.
- 4:51Speaker 4: It's not Oregon, right, and no places Oregon.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Think anybody's Oregon. Yeah, back Nebraska.
- 4:56Speaker 5: The support here from the community, I mean from the
- 5:00Speaker 5: city is there. We have the ability financially to compete
- 5:04Speaker 5: because we have the fifth large most pulitinera in the country.
- 5:06Speaker 5: We just got to get everybody back involved.
- 5:08Speaker 4: In college sports.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Yeah, how do you do that? Yeah? Yeah, well if
- 5:13Speaker 3: I winning games right and stuff?
- 5:15Speaker 4: We did today you guys, Yeah, what got.
- 5:18Speaker 2: You onto that? I feel like that was like, uh,
- 5:19Speaker 2: you know, I want to say innovative, but also I
- 5:21Speaker 2: don't want to say innovative because it was us, Like
- 5:24Speaker 2: what puts you on the trail to do something like that?
- 5:26Speaker 3: Because we were promoting like Hey, where do you guys
- 5:28Speaker 3: want us to go?
- 5:29Speaker 2: And then all of a sudden, you just without a show,
- 5:31Speaker 2: like without any questioning, like, hey, we want you guys
- 5:34Speaker 2: to come here, and like coaches spring game, we want
- 5:35Speaker 2: to build it around you guys. Because I feel like
- 5:37Speaker 2: the majority of that coaches wouldn't wouldn't do something like that.
- 5:40Speaker 5: Yeah, One, I don't need to be the star of
- 5:42Speaker 5: the show. I actually would rather be in the background, right,
- 5:45Speaker 5: So it's great for me. Two Right, what are the
- 5:48Speaker 5: scores did you guys go to?
- 5:50Speaker 1: We went to LSU, We went to South Carolina, Ohio
- 5:52Speaker 1: State Texas?
- 5:55Speaker 3: What was the other one? Really? Go to Bull and
- 6:00Speaker 3: then where? And then here here?
- 6:03Speaker 4: All five of those have something in common, right, tradition
- 6:06Speaker 4: except for.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Right.
- 6:08Speaker 5: So we have to be creative and innovative to get
- 6:11Speaker 5: our brand out, to change the narrative.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Here.
- 6:14Speaker 5: You guys were the creativity and the innovation, and your
- 6:17Speaker 5: guys is following in just who you guys are as
- 6:19Speaker 5: people to create a culture here that we can change
- 6:23Speaker 5: it and get those players necessary to be one of
- 6:25Speaker 5: these teams that I want to build this program into.
- 6:29Speaker 1: When you're looking at this town being it's a pro
- 6:32Speaker 1: football town, how do you get people to transition from
- 6:35Speaker 1: pro football into college football?
- 6:37Speaker 5: I don't think you'll transition people. I think you got
- 6:40Speaker 5: to teach. I think there's enough room for both. I
- 6:42Speaker 5: think not everybody's going to be able to go to
- 6:44Speaker 5: a Cardinals game on a Sunday, right, But I do
- 6:47Speaker 5: think there's enough people that if you can't go to
- 6:49Speaker 5: a Cardinals.
- 6:49Speaker 4: Game on a Sunday and can come to an ASU
- 6:50Speaker 4: game on a Saturday.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Right.
- 6:52Speaker 5: I think there's enough people in this city that we
- 6:54Speaker 5: can have both. And people forget ASU was here first
- 6:58Speaker 5: thirty years ago, the Jake Plummer there was actually these plays.
- 7:01Speaker 5: All the games sold out seven years ago, all the
- 7:04Speaker 5: games sold out. Right, This town just likes winners because
- 7:08Speaker 5: there's so many options. Whichever team's winning is what they choose. Right,
- 7:11Speaker 5: So we've got to put a product on the field
- 7:13Speaker 5: that produces winning. And if we do that, the fans
- 7:15Speaker 5: will come, the recruits will see it, and then the
- 7:18Speaker 5: tradition happens and the rest is history. I mean, what
- 7:20Speaker 5: was Clemson twenty years ago? Yah, Clemson had one ten
- 7:23Speaker 5: win game in twenty season. All of a sudden, the
- 7:27Speaker 5: culture changed. Coach Sweeney did a phenomenal job. Now they're
- 7:30Speaker 5: a blue blood. Why can't that happen here?
- 7:33Speaker 3: That's true, that's fair.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Well as far as for coaching, like finding your process here,
- 7:38Speaker 1: your senior year at Chaparral, you get hurt, you're dealing
- 7:40Speaker 1: with that, you're trying to think of Regel was talking
- 7:42Speaker 1: about you were going to come here become a lawyer,
- 7:44Speaker 1: like your dad and kind of keep moving forward. What
- 7:47Speaker 1: made you pivot into becoming a football coach?
- 7:49Speaker 5: Yeah, Coach Regel grabbed me and said, hey, you should
- 7:52Speaker 5: just try this out.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Start coaching.
- 7:53Speaker 5: And I started coaching, and I just love the impact
- 7:56Speaker 5: you could make on people. I love people. I love
- 7:59Speaker 5: being around people. I'm a p person. Right, All these
- 8:01Speaker 5: excess and the o's people think they matter, and they do.
- 8:04Speaker 5: You have to know what you're doing. But what wins
- 8:06Speaker 5: is can you get people to come together and can
- 8:09Speaker 5: you motivate people to do more than they normally would.
- 8:12Speaker 4: That's what wins.
- 8:13Speaker 5: All the other stuff sounds fun, right, Yeah, we're gonna
- 8:15Speaker 5: run power versus weak rotation, whatever that is. That's everybody
- 8:18Speaker 5: could do that. I could teach my wife right, what
- 8:20Speaker 5: good play calls are?
- 8:21Speaker 3: Right.
- 8:22Speaker 5: I wanted to coach because I love seeing that it
- 8:24Speaker 5: click for a player. I loved it when a player,
- 8:27Speaker 5: maybe off the field or on the field in the classroom,
- 8:30Speaker 5: he couldn't get something or he didn't know how to
- 8:32Speaker 5: be successful, and then it clicked.
- 8:34Speaker 4: And once it clicks, it clicks, and you know you
- 8:37Speaker 4: know how to manage it.
- 8:37Speaker 5: Whether that's your life and your work life balance and
- 8:40Speaker 5: all of a sudden, they're like, hey, you've got to
- 8:41Speaker 5: find balance here.
- 8:43Speaker 4: You're not balanced yet, You're not gonna be successful.
- 8:44Speaker 5: Then all of a sudden, it clicks, Like I love,
- 8:47Speaker 5: I'm addicted to that click.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:50Speaker 1: When you have a guy like Charlie Orriegal who got
- 8:52Speaker 1: you into coaching football and now you employed him, essentially
- 8:54Speaker 1: you snagged it from Idaho State, you know, like, hey,
- 8:57Speaker 1: come down to ASU when he was a head coach,
- 8:59Speaker 1: Like what is that relationship like now when at one
- 9:01Speaker 1: point he was your superior?
- 9:03Speaker 3: Notes flipped.
- 9:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, it's just the guy I lean on
- 9:05Speaker 5: to ask questions too, like is this stupid?
- 9:08Speaker 4: Like we have a dance off in the middle.
- 9:10Speaker 5: Of a scrimmage or scrimmage three we paused for a
- 9:13Speaker 5: dance off, and I'm.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Like, is this stupid? Like I want to do it,
- 9:17Speaker 3: but is it stupid?
- 9:18Speaker 4: Like should we be doing this?
- 9:19Speaker 5: We bring a basketball hoop out to the third practice
- 9:21Speaker 5: and then the practice we have a shootout.
- 9:24Speaker 4: I'm like, is this like?
- 9:25Speaker 5: So I just bounce ideas off a ham like I
- 9:27Speaker 5: wanted to run one on ones in the middle of
- 9:29Speaker 5: a practice like one v one basketball. He's like, any
- 9:33Speaker 5: they're in cleats. They're not used to the movements and cleats.
- 9:36Speaker 5: That would be stupid shootout. So he's kind of the
- 9:39Speaker 5: person that tones me down because I'm the guy that
- 9:42Speaker 5: wants to go one hundred miles per hour all the
- 9:44Speaker 5: time and everything.
- 9:45Speaker 1: It's pretty terrifying that guy like Charlie Reigal has to
- 9:47Speaker 1: be the one to say hey, when we were sitting here,
- 9:50Speaker 1: he was saying earlier, he's there fifth garriers in part.
- 9:53Speaker 3: So that's he tells the speed. He's the speech guy
- 9:55Speaker 3: in me. Oh he is. It's incredible. Speeches are all time.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Brother.
- 9:58Speaker 3: I was trying to tell you, I know.
- 10:00Speaker 4: You remember the one about the dog and not through
- 10:03Speaker 4: the ball and the dog kept running and then through
- 10:05Speaker 4: it again. The dog kept running. The dog never came
- 10:07Speaker 4: back because he wanted that ball.
- 10:10Speaker 1: He want to run through a fucking wall when he
- 10:12Speaker 1: does that, dude, you when you're looking at this program
- 10:16Speaker 1: and you guys are expected years are predicted to win
- 10:18Speaker 1: four games this year, how do you think going into
- 10:22Speaker 1: this season with the development you've seen from spring ball,
- 10:24Speaker 1: how do you see the season going for you guys?
- 10:26Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 10:26Speaker 4: I mean I think our players.
- 10:28Speaker 5: I haven't even talked about that because I think our
- 10:31Speaker 5: guys are invested, like I think our guys.
- 10:33Speaker 3: You heard Jalen.
- 10:35Speaker 5: Said earlier what his expectations are, right, not even close
- 10:38Speaker 5: to the same, because I don't think people understand or
- 10:42Speaker 5: how much our team grew together. People look at forty
- 10:44Speaker 5: five new kids, forty five old kids that are all
- 10:47Speaker 5: probably selfish is what people think, right, Kids that just
- 10:50Speaker 5: came here to get theirs. That's why you transferred to
- 10:52Speaker 5: get yours. And what they fail to see is the community.
- 10:55Speaker 5: Like you guys were mentioning off air that our kids
- 10:57Speaker 5: are together like our kids, it's different, like there is
- 11:01Speaker 5: a they're building a culture here for each other.
- 11:04Speaker 4: And I think that's the secret sauce to winning in college.
- 11:07Speaker 5: Look at Kansas State right, look at Utah right, Look
- 11:11Speaker 5: at the teams that win, right, it's the culture that wins.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:15Speaker 2: And you can tell too, Like when the kids were
- 11:17Speaker 2: on here talking and doing their interview, they also alluded
- 11:19Speaker 2: to you being excited like this was your dream job.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Can you talk about like YASU is your dream job?
- 11:25Speaker 2: And if you you know, if you're if you're saying
- 11:29Speaker 2: that and not planning on going anywhere else, uh speak
- 11:32Speaker 2: a little bit on that.
- 11:34Speaker 5: Yeah, so obviously, I'm born and raised here. I grew
- 11:36Speaker 5: up going to games. You know, my family moved out here,
- 11:40Speaker 5: my parents when they were you know, fifty years ago.
- 11:43Speaker 4: My wife's born and raised here. We were neighbors in
- 11:45Speaker 4: high school.
- 11:46Speaker 5: So I grew up rooting for Arizona State, and then
- 11:50Speaker 5: I coached high school ball here. Right then I coached
- 11:53Speaker 5: college ball here, and then I moved around the country.
- 11:56Speaker 5: But this is always home. So home is home, like
- 11:59Speaker 5: there's nothing like being home. Like you talk about ultra motivation,
- 12:03Speaker 5: like I used to clean up dog crap at Chaparral Park.
- 12:06Speaker 4: That was my job when I coached.
- 12:08Speaker 5: I drive by Chaparral Park on my way to work.
- 12:11Speaker 5: So when you talk about all those things that add up.
- 12:14Speaker 5: And then with my families here, I believe this place
- 12:17Speaker 5: can win championships. I believe the city, what it's growing to,
- 12:20Speaker 5: what it can become. All we have to do is
- 12:22Speaker 5: teach kids it's okay.
- 12:23Speaker 3: To come here.
- 12:24Speaker 5: That's it, because if you showed up here, you're gonna
- 12:26Speaker 5: be like, dang, I want to live there. That's not
- 12:29Speaker 5: a debate. You just got to teach people it's okay
- 12:31Speaker 5: to come here. That's it. It's okay, don't listen to
- 12:34Speaker 5: the media. Come here, live the life you want to live.
- 12:38Speaker 5: Live the life retired professional athletes live in Chandler, right,
- 12:43Speaker 5: and let's.
- 12:43Speaker 4: Go do something special.
- 12:45Speaker 1: You say, like juicy, Yeah, what as you used to
- 12:48Speaker 1: is like tell them it's okay to come here. Why
- 12:50Speaker 1: do you think asus that stigma of being like, hey,
- 12:53Speaker 1: if you're if you're a five star guy, unless you're
- 12:56Speaker 1: like grew up an ASU fan, don't come here.
- 12:59Speaker 5: I think the media chooses what's okay and where's okay
- 13:03Speaker 5: for people to go to eitherink when you watch TV,
- 13:06Speaker 5: when you look at Twitter, they tell you, they tell
- 13:09Speaker 5: these five and four stars you can only go to blank.
- 13:14Speaker 5: You're too good for blank, right, That program's not good
- 13:19Speaker 5: enough in history for you. Why like why like that
- 13:25Speaker 5: doesn't make any sense to me. But it's the narrative
- 13:28Speaker 5: that these kids here all the time is you're too
- 13:30Speaker 5: good for this, you're too good for this, right, when
- 13:33Speaker 5: in reality they should be finding where they want to live, right,
- 13:37Speaker 5: and what people they trust.
- 13:39Speaker 3: That's it.
- 13:40Speaker 5: And if you get twenty five elite players living where
- 13:43Speaker 5: they want to live with coaches they trust, that's an
- 13:47Speaker 5: elite team. Just like that, it's a very very simple process.
- 13:51Speaker 5: But you've got to you've got to break the narrative.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Yeah, when you're as a head coach, being such a
- 13:56Speaker 1: young head coach, what do you attribute your success to
- 14:00Speaker 1: at such a young age, Because there's a lot of
- 14:02Speaker 1: coaches out there that are in their fifty sixties that
- 14:04Speaker 1: have never sniffed a head coaching job. How did you
- 14:06Speaker 1: get to this point at such an early age in
- 14:07Speaker 1: your life.
- 14:08Speaker 5: Yeah, I would say I have a bad I'm very
- 14:11Speaker 5: bad at not being honest. So everybody thinks, oh, young
- 14:15Speaker 5: energy players coach, right, that's what the players think. Players coach, right,
- 14:20Speaker 5: But I'm also the dude that tells you what you
- 14:22Speaker 5: don't want to hear.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Like, I have no problem saying you can't play here.
- 14:26Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, make it, you're not you're not gonna
- 14:28Speaker 5: play for us. I have no problems saying that was
- 14:31Speaker 5: laziest crap. Yeah, Like that doesn't bother me. That's just
- 14:34Speaker 5: how I was raised. So I think the combination of
- 14:37Speaker 5: my youth and understanding that kids haven't changed. Right, People
- 14:41Speaker 5: say kids have changed, Kids have changed, just like the narrative, right,
- 14:44Speaker 5: all these new kids are different. No, they haven't, right,
- 14:47Speaker 5: Adults have lowered the bar because they think kids can't
- 14:50Speaker 5: hit the old standard, so.
- 14:52Speaker 4: They just lower the bar, lower the bar, lower the bar,
- 14:54Speaker 4: lower the bar, and then you hit the bar.
- 14:56Speaker 5: No, you can hit the bar that's always been set,
- 14:59Speaker 5: just do it in different ways. Kids like social media now.
- 15:02Speaker 5: Don't hide from it. Right, we have people saying, oh,
- 15:05Speaker 5: social media is the devil. Hide from it. No, embrace it.
- 15:07Speaker 5: Show them all their tweets of people calling them the
- 15:10Speaker 5: worst player on the.
- 15:11Speaker 3: Planet, so they get used to it.
- 15:12Speaker 5: Don't tell them, don't look at it because they're gonna like,
- 15:15Speaker 5: you have to embrace the new age that we are in, right,
- 15:19Speaker 5: and then find a way to hit the same high
- 15:20Speaker 5: bar in a new era. And I feel like I've
- 15:23Speaker 5: been able to find a balance. And then I genuinely
- 15:26Speaker 5: care about people like I have relationships. I have a
- 15:27Speaker 5: group chats on all my former quarterbacks. I think they
- 15:29Speaker 5: can feel that. So all those three things combined, have
- 15:32Speaker 5: you gone?
- 15:32Speaker 3: Sorry?
- 15:33Speaker 2: I was just gonna say, where do you feel like
- 15:34Speaker 2: you've picked up on those things overtime and over your career,
- 15:37Speaker 2: Like what philosophies or what things have you read, what
- 15:39Speaker 2: things have helped kind of cultivate that mindset?
- 15:41Speaker 3: About it.
- 15:41Speaker 5: I think one, I mean coach Regel. I mean he's
- 15:43Speaker 5: a guy who cared about his players. I mean he
- 15:45Speaker 5: would do anything for his players, but he coached them hard.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Right.
- 15:49Speaker 5: He was passionate, like he brought it every single day.
- 15:51Speaker 5: So getting to c under him at a young age.
- 15:53Speaker 5: We had another guy from a football standpoint, Conrad Hamilton, right,
- 15:57Speaker 5: who was an unbelievable defensive coach.
- 15:59Speaker 3: Right also coach of Chaperl YEP.
- 16:01Speaker 4: Also a coach of Chaparral.
- 16:02Speaker 5: Yeah, we had a squad, dude, We'll get on that later,
- 16:05Speaker 5: but we had we had a squad.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Right.
- 16:07Speaker 5: It was probably the goat squad of all time in
- 16:09Speaker 5: the history of high school football.
- 16:11Speaker 4: But that's just my personal opinion.
- 16:13Speaker 5: But I combine that with guys like Mike Norvel, and
- 16:17Speaker 5: I think I've learned more what to do, but I've
- 16:20Speaker 5: learned more what I wouldn't do along the way, Like, hey,
- 16:24Speaker 5: I love this, but I don't like this, And I've
- 16:28Speaker 5: just kind of marked off all the things I wouldn't
- 16:31Speaker 5: want to do as a head coach because at the
- 16:34Speaker 5: end of the day, people know fake. That's one thing
- 16:37Speaker 5: I firmly believe people know fake, people know real people
- 16:40Speaker 5: know if a head coach walked in.
- 16:41Speaker 4: If I walked in and gave.
- 16:42Speaker 5: A speech like Charlie Ragel and say we're gonna chase
- 16:44Speaker 5: the dog, I'd be laughed out the roof. I'm five nine,
- 16:47Speaker 5: I'm an athletic, like I'm the goofball. I got no
- 16:50Speaker 5: chance to give that speech. If I give that speech,
- 16:52Speaker 5: I'm a fraud. I have to play into me as
- 16:56Speaker 5: a head coach. The culture is going to be what
- 16:58Speaker 5: I am because if you're not, people feed off of
- 17:01Speaker 5: it and they know your full.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Crapy phenomenal energy. Phenomenal energy.
- 17:05Speaker 1: When you're talking about kids looking at Twitter and you're like,
- 17:08Speaker 1: go ahead and look at the negative comments. Have you
- 17:10Speaker 1: ever showed players. Have you ever gone into a team
- 17:12Speaker 1: meeting room and been like, hey, they're saying this about you.
- 17:15Speaker 5: Not yet, but we have showed what they retweet and like,
- 17:19Speaker 5: So I do just from like, hey.
- 17:20Speaker 3: I wish I think, I just scroll and.
- 17:22Speaker 4: This is what you like.
- 17:24Speaker 5: So if somebody is trying to draft you or hire
- 17:26Speaker 5: you for a job and they look at your Twitter,
- 17:28Speaker 5: this is you, bud, just.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Know that dark right, So that's hilarious exactly. So I
- 17:33Speaker 3: do some or all the positive.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Ego, feeling shit that they get tweeted at and they
- 17:38Speaker 2: like or retweeting stuff, and it's like, hey, you know
- 17:40Speaker 2: the whole quote live for the cheers, died by the booze.
- 17:42Speaker 2: It's like, you know, the moment people say bad stuff
- 17:44Speaker 2: about you, you're gonna we know, you're gonna be looking
- 17:47Speaker 2: and feeding into that because you get so hyped to
- 17:49Speaker 2: like and retweet and engage with everybody who you want
- 17:51Speaker 2: to see.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Oh, look what so and so said about me? Correct?
- 17:53Speaker 5: I mean there was a year in years past, just
- 17:55Speaker 5: as an example, I pulled up my name for my
- 17:58Speaker 5: team and rolled at all the hate so they can see, Look,
- 18:02Speaker 5: this is what people say about me calling reverse on
- 18:05Speaker 5: the minus ten.
- 18:06Speaker 4: That was a TfL fumble.
- 18:09Speaker 5: Probably not a great call, right, Look, people hate me,
- 18:11Speaker 5: but horrible call. We were the number two offense in
- 18:14Speaker 5: the country, right, So they loved me, loved me, loved me.
- 18:17Speaker 5: Hate hate hate, hate hate, And the whole goal is
- 18:19Speaker 5: like you should love the process to get better. And
- 18:23Speaker 5: the best players I've ever been around loved like the football,
- 18:29Speaker 5: like they found a way even if they didn't love ball,
- 18:31Speaker 5: they found a way to fall in love with being there,
- 18:33Speaker 5: even if football wasn't their passion, they found a way
- 18:36Speaker 5: to compete one on one and talk crap enough that
- 18:38Speaker 5: they found a way to compete. So it's can you
- 18:41Speaker 5: block all that out look at it, because you're gonna
- 18:43Speaker 5: look at it. You can't hide from it anymore. Let's
- 18:45Speaker 5: embrace it, but then keep the main thing the main thing.
- 18:48Speaker 5: Laugh at it like, yeah, you're probably right, and you
- 18:51Speaker 5: should have cut that ball.
- 18:52Speaker 3: I agree with them, Yeah you should, you know, but
- 18:54Speaker 3: you don't.
- 18:55Speaker 4: Don't take it as a negative. Take it as a
- 18:56Speaker 4: laugh like joke about it.
- 18:59Speaker 1: When you're going through a crew process of Arizona. How
- 19:02Speaker 1: do you get guys? What's your selling point on a
- 19:04Speaker 1: su over something like you of A or anywhere else
- 19:06Speaker 1: in the PAC twelve?
- 19:07Speaker 4: Well, I think for us specific one, we don't recruit
- 19:10Speaker 4: for U of A.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Yeah, uh, that's just that's a no brainer. What do
- 19:13Speaker 2: you come here? That's a no brainer to come here? Oh,
- 19:16Speaker 2: like they just ain't.
- 19:17Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a no brainer to come here. You should
- 19:19Speaker 4: come here.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Yeah, that's not a debate. Yeah, And I and I'm
- 19:22Speaker 3: gonna hate that mark.
- 19:24Speaker 5: We gotta clip that from and I'm gonna and I'm
- 19:26Speaker 5: gonna be here Yeah, there's I mean, you're you're choosing
- 19:29Speaker 5: a U of a or a SHU with a guy
- 19:30Speaker 5: who's passionate about actually being here forever. Yeah, it's not
- 19:33Speaker 5: a debate because you know you're gonna Jeed. Fish's a
- 19:36Speaker 5: really good football coach. He's a really good football really
- 19:38Speaker 5: good football coach. You guys have got in a fight.
- 19:39Speaker 5: Who do you think would win?
- 19:40Speaker 3: Oh?
- 19:40Speaker 4: I would win? Yeah, Oh yeah, I would win.
- 19:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:43Speaker 4: I'm thirty two and I am fiery.
- 19:45Speaker 3: Yeah I will bite ankles. Did just say you're unathletic
- 19:48Speaker 3: and goofy?
- 19:48Speaker 5: I'm unathletic, but I'm fiery and you could hit me
- 19:51Speaker 5: over and over again.
- 19:52Speaker 4: I'm probably I'm gonna go all day.
- 19:53Speaker 3: You'll be like that dog.
- 19:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm gonna be like the dog.
- 19:57Speaker 3: You're gonna have to kill the dogs. You're gonna have
- 19:58Speaker 3: to kill me. Yeah. I don't like to.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Lose anybody in the Pac twelve that you think could
- 20:02Speaker 2: whoop your.
- 20:02Speaker 5: Ass we go through this. Uh, I mean, I don't know.
- 20:11Speaker 5: I mean I would I mean, to be honest, you
- 20:13Speaker 5: would think you. I mean, he's a professional athlete that's
- 20:15Speaker 5: being real.
- 20:16Speaker 3: Losses toes. Yeah, so you don't know how that kind
- 20:19Speaker 3: of hitted.
- 20:19Speaker 5: I don't know, but I would just think. I mean,
- 20:21Speaker 5: I think he just benched like two twenty five twenty
- 20:23Speaker 5: times or something.
- 20:23Speaker 4: I don't know, you really did that. Yeah, I was
- 20:25Speaker 4: pretty impressed.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Fil with bench Yeah. Yeah, I mean he's always been
- 20:28Speaker 3: talking about that. He's always been a bench press cat.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Sometimes you do videos after he gets done hit the
- 20:32Speaker 2: bench press, really drop some wisdom on, you, drop some
- 20:35Speaker 2: philosophy on.
- 20:36Speaker 3: Yeah, that's awesome. So you know one's beating you except
- 20:39Speaker 3: for Dan maybe, Yeah.
- 20:40Speaker 4: Maybe I don't. I don't know. I'd have to Kyle
- 20:42Speaker 4: Whittingham is the way his team plays.
- 20:45Speaker 5: I don't know any of these guys yet, but the
- 20:46Speaker 5: way his team plays, I wouldn't want to get in
- 20:48Speaker 5: to steal cage with him. You're usually a reflection of
- 20:50Speaker 5: your coach, how physical and tough you are as a
- 20:53Speaker 5: football team. So the way his team plays, I wouldn't
- 20:56Speaker 5: want to get in a ring with him. This guy's
- 20:58Speaker 5: play hard.
- 20:58Speaker 3: Has the NFL ever been something that you've thought about?
- 21:01Speaker 5: Not really. I like the I like making an impact
- 21:04Speaker 5: on kids. I like seeing kids like a switch. Yeah,
- 21:08Speaker 5: it's not as much about the football as it is
- 21:11Speaker 5: about the people.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Do you think you would ever dabble in the NFL? No,
- 21:15Speaker 3: you say not really.
- 21:16Speaker 2: It's like, what if you have great success at Arizona State,
- 21:19Speaker 2: which let's just say within five years, you put a
- 21:23Speaker 2: couple of years together, and then the NFL starts to
- 21:24Speaker 2: poke their head in on like, hey, let's get you
- 21:26Speaker 2: up to the big leagues. Yeah, I want to be
- 21:29Speaker 2: here and throwing a bag at you, yeah, I want
- 21:31Speaker 2: to be here.
- 21:31Speaker 5: I mean at the end of the day, I always
- 21:33Speaker 5: tell people, like, there's a certain amount of money to
- 21:35Speaker 5: make you comfortable, right, I am way in that number.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Then there's a certain amount of money that's just what
- 21:41Speaker 4: are you gonna.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Do with it? Right?
- 21:43Speaker 4: I mean here, I'm way beyond comfortable.
- 21:47Speaker 5: So at this point, like I am very very happy,
- 21:51Speaker 5: and I plan on being here, Like I want to
- 21:53Speaker 5: build this, right, I want to build this for the
- 21:55Speaker 5: long haul. That's why we're not cutting corners, so, I
- 21:57Speaker 5: mean especially culturally, like we're not we're not cutting corners culturally,
- 22:01Speaker 5: building this the right way.
- 22:03Speaker 3: What fires me up?
- 22:03Speaker 2: And you can ask you a question, but I was
- 22:05Speaker 2: just gonna chime in and say, what fires me up
- 22:07Speaker 2: is that I believe all the stuff he's.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Saying, yeah, and we were, we were a part of
- 22:11Speaker 3: year one. Yeah, that is a good point. We're here
- 22:16Speaker 3: five years though. You will get a call from us,
- 22:19Speaker 3: you know, this will be on yeahs come here in
- 22:23Speaker 3: the fall for a game, like a tailgate or something
- 22:25Speaker 3: like that. That'd be cool.
- 22:26Speaker 4: That would be fun.
- 22:27Speaker 3: Anytime we can come Arizona.
- 22:29Speaker 4: Well, you guys will be on the raiders, so you'll
- 22:31Speaker 4: just be able to drive right down right.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:33Speaker 3: There, we do have rules. Well, we have to play
- 22:36Speaker 3: together this.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Yeah, we are when you start winning here and the
- 22:40Speaker 1: money starts coming into a su to really beef up
- 22:43Speaker 1: this facility.
- 22:44Speaker 3: Where's the first place you're attacking.
- 22:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I want to get an indoor right behind.
- 22:49Speaker 5: We have a bubble over on the other side. I
- 22:51Speaker 5: want to get an indoor in the fields moved over here,
- 22:53Speaker 5: which is already part of our plans. But obviously that's
- 22:56Speaker 5: when if you put it, we're going to take out
- 22:58Speaker 5: some of the parking behind. Yeah, and we'll put an
- 23:00Speaker 5: indoor right here, taking out that building and then two
- 23:02Speaker 5: fields back there.
- 23:03Speaker 3: So way everything's kind of yep, everything's right here.
- 23:06Speaker 4: So that that's that's step one.
- 23:07Speaker 5: But my first step in terms of fundraising and money
- 23:10Speaker 5: is fundraising for our players and nil. Everything I do
- 23:13Speaker 5: right now is for our players. They said they wanted
- 23:15Speaker 5: better food, got in better food. They said they wanted
- 23:18Speaker 5: better snacks. Got the better snacks.
- 23:20Speaker 4: Right, you guys ate the food today, it's pretty good, right.
- 23:23Speaker 6: Uh?
- 23:23Speaker 5: They said they need nil they haven't had it. I
- 23:25Speaker 5: have fundraised almost every night for an IL. Like every
- 23:28Speaker 5: decision we make is players. And if you keep that
- 23:32Speaker 5: the main thing that players win. That means everything you
- 23:35Speaker 5: should spend money on should affect the who the players.
- 23:38Speaker 3: So I asked them what do they want? Like, what
- 23:40Speaker 3: do you guys want? You want this? You want this?
- 23:43Speaker 5: You want this because that's who you're trying to get
- 23:46Speaker 5: to play at the best of their ability, and that's how.
- 23:47Speaker 3: You get buy in with with ni L.
- 23:50Speaker 1: How do you attack that because you're you're basically always
- 23:52Speaker 1: playing free agency? Now, how do you there's a phrase
- 23:55Speaker 1: is about to start right now and aday, how do
- 23:59Speaker 1: you go about attack?
- 24:00Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 24:01Speaker 5: One for us, I tell people, if you don't want
- 24:03Speaker 5: to be here, leave because I firmly believe culture wins.
- 24:07Speaker 5: So it's you want to be here, leave, that's fine.
- 24:10Speaker 5: I really don't care like go. I don't care if
- 24:13Speaker 5: our three best players into the portal. I wouldn't want it,
- 24:15Speaker 5: and I don't believe that's gonna happen because we've built
- 24:16Speaker 5: a good culture here. But I wouldn't beg them to stay,
- 24:19Speaker 5: because that's how you build a bad culture.
- 24:21Speaker 6: Right.
- 24:21Speaker 5: And on top of that, I tell everybody my job
- 24:24Speaker 5: is to bring in somebody to beat you out.
- 24:26Speaker 3: Yeah, because that's the best for the team.
- 24:29Speaker 5: So it may hurt your feelings if I bring in
- 24:31Speaker 5: four players and they beat out four starters. But guess what,
- 24:35Speaker 5: there's another eighty five guys who are on a better team.
- 24:38Speaker 5: So don't be selfish. When I make this team better
- 24:40Speaker 5: and I challenge them, I just tell them that there
- 24:42Speaker 5: are no guarantees on this team. Every transfer we took, right,
- 24:46Speaker 5: they weren't promised anything. Zero transfers were promised to start.
- 24:49Speaker 5: We're promising I own money, were promised anything. It was
- 24:52Speaker 5: coming to your compete win. Same thing with everybody on
- 24:54Speaker 5: our team. It is win and earn your keyp.
- 25:00Speaker 3: I feel like we've basically hit the big one hit
- 25:02Speaker 3: I do you want to hit one more? You use
- 25:04Speaker 3: the phrase activate the valley? What does that mean?
- 25:06Speaker 5: It just means get everybody involved, like show up at
- 25:11Speaker 5: the spring game, by season tickets, show up because the
- 25:14Speaker 5: one thing that we're gonna you know, you don't have
- 25:17Speaker 5: that six national titles, right, you don't have the three
- 25:21Speaker 5: national titles that you have to be able to show
- 25:23Speaker 5: recruits as people care. You have to be able to
- 25:26Speaker 5: go to a game in the fall and see a
- 25:28Speaker 5: sold out crowd and see an environment that you want
- 25:30Speaker 5: to play in because that has a huge effect on prospects.
- 25:33Speaker 5: So if we want to be where we want to
- 25:36Speaker 5: get to, if we want to get to where we
- 25:37Speaker 5: want to get as a program, which is recruit.
- 25:39Speaker 4: The best players to come here so we can be
- 25:40Speaker 4: the best team to come here.
- 25:42Speaker 5: They need to show up and see a sold out
- 25:44Speaker 5: crowd with butts in seats. They need to see people
- 25:47Speaker 5: active on social media. People think it's stupid, No, it's not.
- 25:51Speaker 5: Our recruits love being retweated by our fans.
- 25:54Speaker 4: It shows love.
- 25:55Speaker 5: We need everybody in the value to be activated. And
- 25:58Speaker 5: the fifth largest valley with one school. All these other
- 26:01Speaker 5: large and all these other large cities don't just have
- 26:05Speaker 5: one school in a one hour radius.
- 26:08Speaker 4: They all have two schools.
- 26:10Speaker 5: We're the only one with one if everybody can get
- 26:13Speaker 5: behind us and get activated financially with what you can
- 26:18Speaker 5: give and then put your button a seat, show up right,
- 26:21Speaker 5: people are gonna realize we care. And if people realize
- 26:24Speaker 5: we care here, we're gonna be prety dang good.
- 26:28Speaker 3: The right man, the right man for the job here.
- 26:30Speaker 3: I feel like ACU was in good hands folks. Coach.
- 26:33Speaker 3: We appreciate you coming on today. Now.
- 26:34Speaker 2: No now, if you if you drop, if you don't
- 26:36Speaker 2: even win four games, we might have to come back
- 26:38Speaker 2: and ask about that.
- 26:39Speaker 3: But so far, like I'm sold. Who's your first game?
- 26:43Speaker 5: Our first game is that we have four home games,
- 26:46Speaker 5: So our first PAC twelve game is USC here week four,
- 26:51Speaker 5: so four for USC at home, we play Oklahoma State
- 26:55Speaker 5: week two, and then Fresno State week three. So we've
- 26:58Speaker 5: got a We've got a few few good games here
- 27:00Speaker 5: at home to start, so I'm hoping it's one hundred
- 27:03Speaker 5: and flat five all four of those games and we
- 27:06Speaker 5: kick off at noon.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Oh yes, absolutely, this has been awesome man, Thank you.
- 27:10Speaker 3: We appreciate you're rooting for you.
- 27:11Speaker 6: Man.
- 27:12Speaker 5: We really hope everything that's coming out, uh you know,
- 27:14Speaker 5: let's I mean, maybe you'll have to defend your trophy
- 27:17Speaker 5: next year.
- 27:18Speaker 3: Maybe I would sign up for that right now. I
- 27:21Speaker 3: need that. Make that happen. I should get a little
- 27:24Speaker 3: I'm not gonna touch that. We need a little wool
- 27:25Speaker 3: Compton right there on the side. Put on the side.
- 27:29Speaker 4: We almost got you a second place trophy that.
- 27:31Speaker 3: Was just like a car bar. That would be so
- 27:33Speaker 3: funny in your pocket, short bust a key chain or something. Yeah,
- 27:43Speaker 3: this is awesome, man, this awesome. I feel there should
- 27:46Speaker 3: be a punishment for me for losing.
- 27:48Speaker 2: We were bummed because somebody goes because on the pod
- 27:50Speaker 2: we were like, we'll figure out what the bed is,
- 27:52Speaker 2: all right, so what so what does the loser?
- 27:54Speaker 3: Would the loser have to do or give or anything
- 27:57Speaker 3: like that. It's like, man, we didn't get around in
- 27:58Speaker 3: doing it.
- 27:59Speaker 6: Whatever.
- 28:01Speaker 3: Don't say that, bro, don't say that.
- 28:04Speaker 6: I think.
- 28:06Speaker 4: I think the loser should have to donate his watch
- 28:08Speaker 4: to a s U N I l I think that
- 28:14Speaker 4: would be phenomenal.
- 28:15Speaker 3: You can figure out something. I'll tell you what next year,
- 28:18Speaker 3: not the watch to watch Vegas. Yeah yeah, but that's
- 28:24Speaker 3: my money. I'm gonna have to keep that. Keep that
- 28:29Speaker 3: that trade a lot.
- 28:29Speaker 1: But yes, we will be back, and I think there
- 28:31Speaker 1: should be some sort of n I l that next
- 28:33Speaker 1: year between you and me, loser has to pay a
- 28:35Speaker 1: certain amount.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Yeah, as long as we as long as it alliances
- 28:38Speaker 2: whatever happens this year, like what just happened?
- 28:41Speaker 3: Okay, how much do you want me to pay this?
- 28:42Speaker 3: I don't know this umber?
- 28:44Speaker 1: Next year say a number, but no, next year it's
- 28:46Speaker 1: gotta be the same thing because I'll pay whatever.
- 28:48Speaker 3: You can think about it.
- 28:49Speaker 6: You don't want to say a number right now? You
- 28:51Speaker 6: know money gets me, Yeah, money gives me the escalate today. Yeah,
- 28:59Speaker 6: that and there was a reason that I would escalate.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Bro, you're soft now, you don't got that great po
- 29:08Speaker 1: We had put the video of me and the Raft
- 29:11Speaker 1: four with that set all the way back.
- 29:13Speaker 2: The big case, the big case, oh if there's a
- 29:17Speaker 2: Raft four, and then the escalade. I'm thinking the big case,
- 29:20Speaker 2: the caring case for all this equipment would go in
- 29:22Speaker 2: to escalate. Mitch was the one in charge of it.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Mitch is on team Compton. The whole thought process was
- 29:27Speaker 2: we're gonna be riding in separate cars, like now's the time,
- 29:30Speaker 2: now in the morning, we shouldn't be hanging out anymore.
- 29:32Speaker 2: We need to separate. So I was like, let's separate
- 29:34Speaker 2: team Compton team Lawan. And then I look at this
- 29:37Speaker 2: big case and I'm like, hey, we should get to escalade.
- 29:40Speaker 2: There was like, oh, I see what you're doing. Buck
- 29:42Speaker 2: them in his seat and everything. I was hot.
- 29:45Speaker 3: I was hot.
- 29:45Speaker 1: But yeah, coach, we appreciate you. If you want us
- 29:47Speaker 1: to come back for a spring game, we'll absolutely do that. Awesome, absolutely, man,
- 29:51Speaker 1: appreciate it.
