- 0:01Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Radio Eye's Turner Story Hour. As
- 0:05Speaker 1: a reminder, Radio Eye is a reading service intended for
- 0:08Speaker 1: people who are blind or have other disabilities that make
- 0:11Speaker 1: it difficult to read printed material. Today we will be
- 0:15Speaker 1: reading from various books on Back to School. Your reader
- 0:19Speaker 1: today is Diane. We will begin with the story Rufus
- 0:23Speaker 1: Goes to School. It was published by Sterling Children's Books.
- 0:28Speaker 1: It has a copyright year of 2013. The author of
- 0:32Speaker 1: our book is Kim T. Griswell. Every day, Rufus Leroy
- 0:37Speaker 1: Williams III turned the pages of his favorite book. He
- 0:41Speaker 1: looked at every picture. He made up stories to go
- 0:44Speaker 1: with them, but he could not read the words. Rufus
- 0:47Speaker 1: knew just what to do. He would go to school
- 0:50Speaker 1: and learn to read. But first, he needed a backpack.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Early the next morning, Rufus scuttled down the street to school.
- 0:58Speaker 1: He peeked through the front door. Then he trotted down
- 1:02Speaker 1: the hall to the principal's office. He was greeted by
- 1:05Speaker 1: the principal's secretary. Principal Lippitt's secretary knocked on his door.
- 1:10Speaker 1: There's a pig to see you. Rufus stepped forward. My
- 1:13Speaker 1: name is Rufus Leroy Williams III, he said. I have
- 1:17Speaker 1: a backpack and I am ready for school. The principal
- 1:20Speaker 1: shook his head. No pigs in school? Why not? asked Rufus.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Because pigs track mud in the halls, said Principal Lippitt.
- 1:31Speaker 1: They turn the drawings into airplanes. They play leapfrog in class,
- 1:35Speaker 1: and they start food fights in the cafeteria. Rufus frowned.
- 1:40Speaker 1: But I have a backpack. Makes no difference, said Principal Lippitt,
- 1:44Speaker 1: and he showed Rufus to the door. Rufus Leroy Williams
- 1:48Speaker 1: III really wanted to go to school, and he knew
- 1:51Speaker 1: just what he needed. A lunchbox. Right before lunchtime, the
- 1:56Speaker 1: secretary poked her head into Principal Lippitt's office. The biggest fact.
- 2:01Speaker 1: she whispered my name is rufus leroy williams the third
- 2:04Speaker 1: he said i have a backpack and a lunchbox i
- 2:08Speaker 1: am ready for school the principal folded his arms no
- 2:12Speaker 1: pigs in school why not asked rufus because pigs knock
- 2:18Speaker 1: over the block tower said principal whippet and they hide
- 2:22Speaker 1: under the teacher's desk pigs draw stick figures on the
- 2:26Speaker 1: chalkboard he waggled his finger at rufus and they chased
- 2:30Speaker 1: their classmates during recess. But I have a backpack and
- 2:33Speaker 1: a lunchbox, Rufus frowned. Makes no difference, said Principal Lippitt,
- 2:38Speaker 1: and he waved Rufus out the door. Rufus Leroy Williams
- 2:43Speaker 1: III really, really wanted to go to school, and he
- 2:46Speaker 1: knew just what he needed, a blanket. During that time,
- 2:51Speaker 1: the secretary opened Principal Lippitt's door. Sir, Rufus Leroy Williams
- 2:57Speaker 1: III The third rushed past her. I have a backpack,
- 3:00Speaker 1: a lunchbox, and a blanket, and now I'm really ready
- 3:04Speaker 1: for school. The principal sighed. I told you, no pigs. Wait,
- 3:10Speaker 1: said Rufus. I will never blow bubbles in my milk
- 3:13Speaker 1: or finger paint my classmates. I will not stand on
- 3:16Speaker 1: my head during nap time or leave nose prints on
- 3:19Speaker 1: the windows, and I will come to school every day. Sorry,
- 3:24Speaker 1: the principal shook his head. No pigs in school. But
- 3:28Speaker 1: I have a backpack, a lunchbox, and a blanket, said Rufus.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Is that all? asked the principal. Rufus frowned. What else
- 3:36Speaker 1: could he need for school? I have this, Rufus held
- 3:40Speaker 1: up his favorite book, and I want to learn to read. Ah,
- 3:44Speaker 1: Principal Lippitt smiled. That makes a difference. He escorted Rufus
- 3:49Speaker 1: out of his office and down the hall. This is
- 3:52Speaker 1: Rufus Leroy Williams III, Principal Lippitt announced as they entered
- 3:57Speaker 1: a classroom. and he will be joining your class. Hooray,
- 4:02Speaker 1: shouted the boys and girls. Rufus Leroy Williams III put
- 4:05Speaker 1: away his backpack, his lunchbox, his blanket, and his favorite book.
- 4:11Speaker 1: He was ready for school. Rufus loved learning the ABCs,
- 4:16Speaker 1: especially the letter P. He loved learning the one, two, threes.
- 4:20Speaker 1: He loved lunchtime and naptime, but Rufus loved storytime most
- 4:26Speaker 1: of all. Because it gave him room to dream. Our
- 4:32Speaker 1: next book is titled Mission Back to School. And it
- 4:36Speaker 1: was published by Random House Children's Book. A division of
- 4:41Speaker 1: Penguin Random House. It has a copyright year of 2016.
- 4:45Speaker 1: And the author of the book is Susan Hood. Classified information.
- 4:52Speaker 1: It's time. Time for the first day of school. Your mission.
- 4:55Speaker 1: to begin the first phase of training in your hunt
- 4:58Speaker 1: for intelligence. We know you're up for the challenge. Are
- 5:02Speaker 1: you ready? Number one, suit up. I need my robot shirt.
- 5:08Speaker 1: I want to wear my tutu and tiara and cowboy boots.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Where's mother's sneaker? But I like wearing it like this.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Number two, rendezvous at vehicle checkpoint. Come on, we don't
- 5:21Speaker 1: want to be late. This is our bus stop. We're
- 5:24Speaker 1: ready to roll. Number three, meet intelligent officer. Get ID.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Number four, unpack gear. Submit case files. Number five, build
- 5:36Speaker 1: diplomatic relations. Number six, gather for debriefings. Today is Tuesday
- 5:49Speaker 1: and it's sunny. Number seven, practice decoding. Cat. Number eight,
- 5:58Speaker 1: solve problems. It all adds up. I detect a pattern.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Number nine, develop secret signals. May I go to the bathroom?
- 6:08Speaker 1: Something smells stinky. I don't know. Quiet down, please. I
- 6:12Speaker 1: know the answer. I have a question. Time out. Good job.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Number ten, report rogue agent. Agent 99 escaped. Let's follow
- 6:22Speaker 1: the clues. Shadow the suspect. Aha, your cover is blown.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Return escapee to holding area. Number 11, conduct field work.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Let's sweep the area for bugs. Watch out, it's a
- 6:37Speaker 1: steam operation. Bring on the SWAT team. Number 12, raid supplies,
- 6:43Speaker 1: trade assets. I'll trade you my ham and cheese for
- 6:46Speaker 1: your tuna fish. Not again. Swallow the evidence. Number thirteen,
- 6:52Speaker 1: develop lines of communication. Do, re, mi, fo, so, la, ti, do.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Collect fingerprints. Number fourteen, conduct physical training exercises. Dodge enemy attacks.

- 7:14Speaker 1: uncover information. Check out counterintelligence. Number sixteen, cover your tracks.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Cleanup operation complete. Leave no trace. Number 17, return to headquarters.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Number 18, share top secret information. Number 19, issue final report.
- 7:36Speaker 1: So how was your first day of school? It was fantastic.
- 7:41Speaker 1: I made a new friend and found a bug and
- 7:43Speaker 1: painted a picture. And my teacher is really nice and
- 7:45Speaker 1: I have to go back tomorrow. And mission accomplished. Our
- 7:51Speaker 1: next book is titled Let's Learn All About Going to School.
- 7:55Speaker 1: And it was published by Windmill Books, an imprint of
- 8:01Speaker 1: Rosen Publishing. It has a copyright year of 2023. And
- 8:05Speaker 1: the author of the book is Catherine Beach. Big school.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Miss Smiley has a new class starting school soon. The
- 8:16Speaker 1: children have been getting ready by practicing some helpful things
- 8:19Speaker 1: at home. and talking about what school might be like.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Jasmine chats with her mom about the exciting things she
- 8:26Speaker 1: will do at school. Her mom tells her that school
- 8:28Speaker 1: will be fun. There will be lots of new things
- 8:32Speaker 1: to try. At school, there will be a hook with
- 8:35Speaker 1: your name where you can hang your coat. Veronica has
- 8:39Speaker 1: been practicing putting on her shoes and coat. Shoes with
- 8:42Speaker 1: Velcro can be easier than those with laces and buckles.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Adam likes to practice writing his name. He's found lots
- 8:49Speaker 1: of fun ways to do it. In the sand, with
- 8:52Speaker 1: some chalk, and usually using modeling clay. When you use
- 8:57Speaker 1: the toilet, make sure you wipe yourself clean with toilet
- 8:59Speaker 1: paper afterward. Then flush the toilet and wash and dry
- 9:03Speaker 1: your hands. I can use the toilet all by myself.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I can wash my hands. One, wet your hands with water. Two,
- 9:10Speaker 1: squirt on some soap. Three, rub the soapy water all
- 9:14Speaker 1: around in between your fingers, front and back. Do this
- 9:17Speaker 1: for as long as it takes to sing the song
- 9:19Speaker 1: Happy Birthday twice. Four, rinse off the soap. Five, dry
- 9:24Speaker 1: your hands. On the way. It's important to stay safe
- 9:30Speaker 1: on the way to and from school. Look at the
- 9:32Speaker 1: different ways the children who will be in Miss Molly's
- 9:35Speaker 1: class get to go to school. Getting the bus. Some
- 9:39Speaker 1: children travel on a school bus and others are driven
- 9:41Speaker 1: in a car. Seatbelts and car seats help us keep
- 9:46Speaker 1: Safe in vehicles. Crossing safely. A crossing guard stops the
- 9:51Speaker 1: traffic so the children can cross the road safely. Make
- 9:54Speaker 1: sure to look and listen both ways before you cross
- 9:57Speaker 1: the road. Always cross at a safe place. and hold
- 10:00Speaker 1: on to an adult's hand. How do you get to school?
- 10:03Speaker 1: Do you travel in a bus or car or do
- 10:06Speaker 1: you walk? Walking to school, living or babysitting or walk
- 10:10Speaker 1: to school, wearing special bright clothes make it easier for
- 10:13Speaker 1: people in cars to see them. This is very important
- 10:16Speaker 1: when it starts. My clothes make me stand out when
- 10:19Speaker 1: lights shine on them. Hurry up, Dad. Protective helmets help
- 10:24Speaker 1: keep cyclists safe. I can draw my network hand. If
- 10:29Speaker 1: you feel worried about anything at all, it is good
- 10:31Speaker 1: to talk to a grown-up about it. Make a list
- 10:33Speaker 1: of people you can talk to by drawing a network hand. First,
- 10:37Speaker 1: draw around your hand. Then draw pictures and write the
- 10:40Speaker 1: names of five adults who you feel safe to tell
- 10:43Speaker 1: any worries to around it. They may be... people in
- 10:47Speaker 1: your family, or teachers at school. The first day. Starting
- 10:52Speaker 1: school is a big day for the children in Ms.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Smiley's class. They feel different things as they walk through
- 10:57Speaker 1: the school gates. How do you feel about starting school?
- 11:00Speaker 1: Do you feel excited, shy, happy, confused, nervous, or something else?
- 11:07Speaker 1: I remember my first day here. I am excited. I
- 11:10Speaker 1: can't wait to make new friends and learn new things.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I feel shy about meeting new people. I'm glad my
- 11:15Speaker 1: daddy is with me. Adam holds onto his caretaker's hand
- 11:19Speaker 1: tightly as he does not know where to go. Adam's
- 11:22Speaker 1: caretaker has told him not to worry as she will
- 11:25Speaker 1: go inside with him. Libby feels confused as it's all
- 11:30Speaker 1: so different from home. Nathan is bursting with happiness. He
- 11:34Speaker 1: loves playing outside and can't wait to run around the playground.
- 11:39Speaker 1: I can make a feelings wheel. Ask an adult to
- 11:41Speaker 1: draw a circle split into five parts. the face in
- 11:44Speaker 1: each part to show a different feeling. Use your will
- 11:47Speaker 1: to talk about how you feel about starting school. In
- 11:51Speaker 1: the classroom. Look, Miss Smiley is waiting to say hello
- 11:54Speaker 1: to her new class as they arrive. Their parents and
- 11:57Speaker 1: caretakers can go inside with them on their first day.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Nico feels braver already. Hello, Nico. Welcome to your new school.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Coat pegs. Anna's caretaker shows him his peg where he
- 12:11Speaker 1: will hang his coat. Adam is glad he has learned
- 12:13Speaker 1: to read his name, and it helps him to find
- 12:16Speaker 1: his pay. I can spot my name. What things can
- 12:20Speaker 1: you spot your name on? You can see it on
- 12:22Speaker 1: the labels on your school bag and on your water bottle.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Can you make the shape of the letter your name
- 12:27Speaker 1: begins with in the air or with your finger? What's
- 12:32Speaker 1: for lunch? The children choose their lunch from the school's
- 12:35Speaker 1: menu in the morning. The pictures show lunch for today.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Rafael loves macaroni and cheese, so he puts his name
- 12:41Speaker 1: next to that. Some children bring a packed lunch into
- 12:45Speaker 1: school from home. What would you bring? Circle time. The
- 12:50Speaker 1: children are quiet on the carpet so they can hear
- 12:52Speaker 1: when Miss Smiley calls out their name. Good morning, Sarah.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Good morning, Miss Smiley. Tom raises his hand to ask
- 13:01Speaker 1: a question. Our schedule. This shows what Ms. Smiley's class
- 13:06Speaker 1: might do in a day. They have lessons as well
- 13:08Speaker 1: as times when they can choose what to do. Morning. Literacy.
- 13:14Speaker 1: This is about using letters and words. Raphael guesses which
- 13:17Speaker 1: picture begins with a sound. Vera is good at writing
- 13:22Speaker 1: the letter her name begins with. Discovery time. Everyone can
- 13:27Speaker 1: choose what to play with and discover new things together.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Clean up time. Snack time. Everyone has a drink and
- 13:36Speaker 1: chooses a healthy snack. Outside time. The children run around
- 13:40Speaker 1: outside in the fresh air. Numbers. This is all about
- 13:44Speaker 1: learning to count. The children are exploring how they can
- 13:47Speaker 1: make four. Then it's lunch time. Then the afternoon. Phonics.
- 13:53Speaker 1: This is learning about letters and sounds. A snake can hiss.
- 13:57Speaker 1: The word hiss ends in a s. Discovery time. Children
- 14:02Speaker 1: can learn to do things outside or inside. Story time.
- 14:07Speaker 1: It's good to calm down after a busy day before
- 14:10Speaker 1: we go home. Pick up time. It's time to meet
- 14:13Speaker 1: parents and caretakers. I can get excited. Think about what
- 14:17Speaker 1: you most look forward to doing at school. You could
- 14:21Speaker 1: look through this book to help you decide. What do
- 14:23Speaker 1: you like about it? Settling in. Ms. Smiley shows the
- 14:28Speaker 1: children around their classroom. There are so many interesting things
- 14:31Speaker 1: to do. Jamal thinks it will take him a while
- 14:35Speaker 1: to remember where everything is. I have my own drawer
- 14:38Speaker 1: for my things. Ask me or our teaching assistant, Mrs. Latif,
- 14:43Speaker 1: if you forget where something is. What things can Nico see, hear, smell,
- 14:48Speaker 1: and touch on the sensory table? Clean something up when
- 14:52Speaker 1: you have finished this kind. It makes it easier to
- 14:54Speaker 1: find for the next person to use it. The book corner.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Maddie and Sophia can believe how lucky they are to
- 15:02Speaker 1: have all these books in their classroom. Ms. Lateef helps Ms.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Smiley look after the children. Outside. Ms. Smiley's classroom is
- 15:12Speaker 1: a large outside area where there are lots more activities
- 15:15Speaker 1: for the children to try out. The children take turns
- 15:18Speaker 1: playing on tricycles. I'm pretending my mud pancakes are chocolate flavor.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Making mud cakes there's a lot of stirring mashing and
- 15:29Speaker 1: mixing going on in the mud kitchen what is a
- 15:32Speaker 1: good thing to use to stir sharing and taking turns
- 15:36Speaker 1: means that everyone gets a chance to play with different
- 15:38Speaker 1: things splashing around sierra and chin are pouring water through
- 15:43Speaker 1: funnels to see where it goes in the sand jasmine
- 15:48Speaker 1: and zara are pretending they are at the beach have
- 15:51Speaker 1: you been to the beach what would you like to
- 15:54Speaker 1: do there should we build a sandcastle Our values. Ms.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Smiley wants everyone to feel happy and welcome in her class. Together,
- 16:03Speaker 1: they talk about the school's values, which show them how
- 16:06Speaker 1: they should try to behave. Responsibility. I will look after
- 16:11Speaker 1: my own things and try to work things out for
- 16:13Speaker 1: myself first, when it's safe to do so. Respect. I
- 16:17Speaker 1: will be polite to others and help to keep the
- 16:20Speaker 1: classroom tidy. Fairness. I will take turns with things and
- 16:24Speaker 1: sometimes let others go first. another child look sad give
- 16:28Speaker 1: them a smile it will help them to feel a
- 16:31Speaker 1: bit better excellence i will try my best with everything
- 16:35Speaker 1: i do kindness i will listen to others and help
- 16:38Speaker 1: others when they need it if i can peace i
- 16:42Speaker 1: will keep calm and i will not shout or lose
- 16:45Speaker 1: my temper honesty i will be brave enough to tell
- 16:49Speaker 1: the truth especially when i make a mistake i can
- 16:53Speaker 1: calm down If you get mad or upset about something,
- 16:56Speaker 1: calm down with some star breathing. Draw a big star
- 17:00Speaker 1: on paper. Trace your finger up and down the sides
- 17:02Speaker 1: of the star, breathing in each time you go up
- 17:06Speaker 1: a side and out when you go down a side.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Keep doing it until you feel calm. Around the school.
- 17:14Speaker 1: The school is a big place and there are lots
- 17:16Speaker 1: of other rooms besides Miss Smiley's classroom. Miss Smiley takes
- 17:20Speaker 1: the children around and shows them other parts of the school.
- 17:23Speaker 1: The people who work in the office know everything that
- 17:25Speaker 1: happens in the school and all the students. They also
- 17:29Speaker 1: help parents and caretakers with any questions they may have.
- 17:34Speaker 1: The children meet the principal, Mr. Bright. He has a
- 17:37Speaker 1: very big job. He looks after the whole school. Hello,
- 17:41Speaker 1: Emmett and Isaac. How do you like your new school?
- 17:44Speaker 1: We love it. The quiet room is a peaceful spot
- 17:49Speaker 1: sometimes used by children instead of the classroom. I like
- 17:53Speaker 1: coming here. It's a safe place for me to feel calm.
- 17:56Speaker 1: And then there's the library. You can borrow books on
- 17:59Speaker 1: lots of different topics from a library. The janitor helps
- 18:03Speaker 1: to keep the school clean and fixes things that are broken.
- 18:07Speaker 1: I can discover new things. Ask an adult to take
- 18:11Speaker 1: you to a library and find a book on something new.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Ask them to read it to you. Tell a friend
- 18:15Speaker 1: something new that you have learned. Making friends. Some of
- 18:21Speaker 1: the children find it easy to make new friends and
- 18:24Speaker 1: others don't. Some have friends that are noisy and others
- 18:27Speaker 1: that are quiet. Some have friends might be a bit
- 18:29Speaker 1: bossy and others can be shy. My name's Jamal. What
- 18:33Speaker 1: are your names? I'm Adam. I'm Libby. Do you have
- 18:37Speaker 1: any pets? Questions. Think of two or three questions you
- 18:41Speaker 1: could ask other children when you talk to them. Things
- 18:44Speaker 1: in common. Jamal likes building things and has made two
- 18:47Speaker 1: new friends who enjoy building things too. New games. Some
- 18:52Speaker 1: of the children are playing together in the kitchenery. It's
- 18:54Speaker 1: fun to pretend to make lunch. If someone is a
- 18:57Speaker 1: bit shy, you could ask them to join in with you.
- 19:01Speaker 1: New games. Farrah asks Meg if she wants to join
- 19:04Speaker 1: in the clapping game. I haven't played this before. We'll
- 19:08Speaker 1: show you. Take turns. Sophia and Rosie are outside. They
- 19:13Speaker 1: take turns to ride on the blue scooter. Lunchtime. Before
- 19:18Speaker 1: Miss Molly's class goes to lunch, they wash their hands.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Then they are taken to the cafeteria, each child having
- 19:29Speaker 1: a school lunch. Where's the color wristband to show the
- 19:34Speaker 1: food they have chosen? You're having macaroni and cheese, Raphael.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Some children bring a pack lunch with them. What did
- 19:44Speaker 1: I pick? Raphael has forgotten the food he chose for today,
- 19:47Speaker 1: so the lunch helper reminds him. him. A helping hand,
- 19:52Speaker 1: as well as lunchtime helpers, older children from the school
- 19:56Speaker 1: help out on the first few days. If you see
- 20:02Speaker 1: someone on their own, it's kind to ask them if
- 20:05Speaker 1: they would like to sit with you. It's loud. Some
- 20:10Speaker 1: people like noise and some don't. Tino finds the cafeteria noisy.
- 20:15Speaker 1: He wears headphones so it's not so loud. Aisha, would
- 20:19Speaker 1: you like to sit with us? Yes, please. Recycling. It
- 20:23Speaker 1: helps our plan if we recycle our trash. Plastic can
- 20:26Speaker 1: be made into other things and food can be turned
- 20:29Speaker 1: into compost. I can make a healthy snack pot. Make
- 20:33Speaker 1: a fruit or vegetable snack pot. Wash a container such
- 20:36Speaker 1: as a yogurt container. Choose your snacks and ask an
- 20:40Speaker 1: adult to chop them. Wash and arrange in the pot
- 20:43Speaker 1: and add some dip if you like. Enjoy. What will
- 20:47Speaker 1: we learn? This month, Ms. Smiley's class is finding out
- 20:50Speaker 1: all about the sea and the animals that live in it.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Adam has discovered that dolphins talk to each other in
- 20:55Speaker 1: clicks and whistles. I'm making the clicking noises dolphins make.
- 21:00Speaker 1: This sounds like waves on a sandy beach. Shipwreck. The
- 21:05Speaker 1: home corner has been turned into a shipwreck and the
- 21:07Speaker 1: children have found treasure. What treasure have they found? Sea sounds.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Adam and Sierra make sounds that remind them of the sea.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Sink or float. Sophia and Rosie are finding and sorting
- 21:18Speaker 1: things that float and sink. Can you guess if the
- 21:21Speaker 1: plastic rings will float or sink? Sea creatures. Look at
- 21:26Speaker 1: the super underwater picture Jamal's painting. Can you see the octopus?
- 21:31Speaker 1: C begins with sound and the letter looks like a
