- 0:00Hello there, I'm Tyler Griffin and this is Scripture Study
- 0:04Insights by Scripture Central Today, first Nephi chapters one
- 0:09through 5. And the lens that we're going to
- 0:12use today as we explore these chapters and dive in is the
- 0:17perspective of questions and answers.
- 0:21You'll notice as you dive into the scriptures that there are a
- 0:25lot of questions and there are a lot of major assertions and
- 0:31everything in between. So some of the questions that
- 0:35can be asked are who, what, when, where, why, and how.
- 0:52So as we dive into these chapters, it's beautiful to
- 0:57watch the various characters in these stories, as they unfold,
- 1:03interact with these major questions.
- 1:06Who, what, when, where, why, and how.
- 1:09And you watch these shifts occur as questions arise, as they work
- 1:15through the process of faith and discipleship moving forward and
- 1:19get some of those questions answered.
- 1:21And you're going to see that they shift from one side to the
- 1:27other on a on a moving scale, a sliding scale.
- 1:30Each one. The other thing you'll notice is
- 1:33that rarely in scriptures do people start with all of their
- 1:38questions firmly over in the absolute knowledge category.
- 1:45It isn't a question they know the answer to all of those over
- 1:49here. That's very, very rare.
- 1:52Most of the time you'll know a few things and have a lot of
- 1:56questions. So one scripture study technique
- 1:59you can use as you immerse yourself in first Nephi one
- 2:02through 5 is to just read it a little slower and a little care
- 2:07more carefully and ponder the question what is clear to this
- 2:12person and what isn't clear to this person?
- 2:15And then watch what they do and we can learn lessons of
- 2:18discipleship from Nephi, from Lehi, from Soraya.
- 2:24We can learn lessons of how maybe not to respond in certain
- 2:27situations from Lehmann and Lemuel and others in the story
- 2:31like Laban. So for starters, look at the
- 2:36very very first verse I Nephi. Having been born of goodly
- 2:41parents, he knows a lot about who he is, about his parents and
- 2:50what his, his blessing of parentage is in this life.
- 2:56And because of that he was taught somewhat in all the
- 3:00learning of his father. So you notice now that by
- 3:04understanding The Who, what then gets answered.
- 3:09What should a good parent do? Teach children somewhat in all
- 3:15their learning. And then he says, having seen
- 3:18many afflictions in the course of my days, telling us that life
- 3:23hasn't been easy, Nevertheless, having been highly favored of
- 3:27the Lord, so he recognizes God's hand in his life, in spite of
- 3:32some of the struggles and the difficulties that he's faced.
- 3:35Yeah, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and
- 3:38the mysteries of God, therefore, I make a record of my proceeding
- 3:42in my days. For a more complete discussion
- 3:46of that first verse, you can refer back to our Come Follow Me
- 3:49Insights video from four years ago, where we dive a lot deeper
- 3:55into that verse for our purposes here.
- 3:58Turn the page over and you'll notice that Nephi begins telling
- 4:03his father's story about encountering God and having this
- 4:09vision. And it's beautiful to note that
- 4:13God makes very clear what Lehigh is supposed to do.
- 4:19He's supposed to go in and teach the people in Jerusalem that if
- 4:23they don't repent, they're going to be destroyed.
- 4:27What God doesn't give him is a long explanation of or a
- 4:33handbook of how to do it. So he goes in and he starts
- 4:38preaching to the people. They first mock him, and then he
- 4:41preaches of the coming of the Messiah, and now they want to
- 4:44kill him for blasphemy. And so now you can imagine all
- 4:50these questions in Lehigh's mind, in Soraya's mind, Why?
- 4:55Why would God have asked us to do that?
- 4:58Now his life is on the line. And I love how God answers some
- 5:04of those questions very quickly in chapter 2 by saying, Lehigh,
- 5:09I want you to take your family and leave, go, go out into the
- 5:14wilderness. And so we end up out in the
- 5:17wilderness in chapter 2. And it's a beautiful principle
- 5:24that you notice why he left. If you go to verse three of
- 5:29chapter 2, it says, And it came to pass, that he Speaking of
- 5:32Lehigh was obedient unto the word the Lord.
- 5:36Wherefore he did as the Lord commanded him.
- 5:40I think it's fascinating to note that Lehigh didn't have all of
- 5:43the answers. He didn't know all of the where.
- 5:47He didn't know all of the when. How long was this going to last?
- 5:51He didn't even know all of the why.
- 5:54He just knew what God asked him to do, and he focused on what he
- 6:00knew rather than putting his focus on what he didn't know.
- 6:04And being paralyzed by the ambiguity of the situation of I
- 6:09I need to to leave. They're trying to kill me, but
- 6:12why should I go there? How long is this going to take?
- 6:15Where we actually headed he went because he was obedient.
- 6:20Now contrast that for a moment to Laman and Lemuel.
- 6:25When you come over to verse 14 in chapter 2 it says It came to
- 6:31pass that my father did speak unto them in the valley of
- 6:33Lemuel with power, being filled with the the Spirit, until their
- 6:39frames did shake before him, and he did confound them that they
- 6:44durst not utter against him therefore or wherefore they did
- 6:49as he commanded them. You'll notice, brothers and
- 6:53sisters, that verse 14 ends with Laman and Lemuel doing what they
- 6:57were commanded to do, which is exactly how verse three ended.
- 7:01Lehigh did exactly what he was commanded to do, but the
- 7:05difference is what motivated that obedience.
- 7:09Lehigh obeyed because he was obedient to the to the word of
- 7:14the Lord. He was filled with an obedient
- 7:17spirit. Lehman and Lemuel obey because
- 7:20their frames are shaking and they're scared and their father
- 7:23has confounded them and they they basically have no other
- 7:26choice. So something to keep in mind as
- 7:30you read and study and dive deeper into each of these
- 7:33verses, many of which that we're skipping, is to look for what is
- 7:37the motivation behind the action?
- 7:40Why is this scripture character acting the way they're acting?
- 7:44Is it because they're focused on God or is it for worldly
- 7:48reasons? They have no choice or they're
- 7:52they're confounded. So something to consider.
- 7:54There is analyze not just scripture characters motivation
- 7:59for obedience or for why they're doing what they're doing, but to
- 8:03then translate that into our own life and say why am I doing what
- 8:07I'm doing? Why am I going to church?
- 8:09Am I doing it because I feel confounded to or out of duty or
- 8:14to be seen of people? Is it a socially acceptable
- 8:17thing to do? Is that the only reason I'm
- 8:18going or am I going out of a love for God is one of the
- 8:24reasons? One of the answers for my
- 8:27obedience is I know who God wants me to become, and I'm
- 8:33striving to build a connection and a relationship with Him.
- 8:37So I'm doing these things whether it's going to the temple
- 8:40or doing my ministering or serving in my calling or loving
- 8:44my neighbors serving my family out of a sense of love and
- 8:50obedience to God rather than earthly reasons.
- 8:54Now you get into chapter 3 and this whole concept of questions
- 9:01gets really, really fun because what happens is, is Father
- 9:06Lehigh brings his boys to his tent and says I've I've dreamed
- 9:12a dream and I've got a revelation and it's been made
- 9:16known to me that you 4 need to go back to Jerusalem.
- 9:20It's about 250 miles away through a really terrible desert
- 9:26area and you need to go and get the brass plates.
- 9:30So they knew pretty clearly what they needed to do.
- 9:34So on our scale over here of questions compared to what we
- 9:40know very firmly, you would put this question very clearly on
- 9:45that side of the board. What God didn't give them in
- 9:49chapter three was a fullness of the reasons why we got a few
- 9:56reasons. So we would maybe put that
- 9:59closer to the the knowledge side than the question side, but not
- 10:06fully over there yet. Maybe maybe put a period after
- 10:10the the question why rather than an exclamation mark.
- 10:15And here's the big one. What they didn't get was the
- 10:21how. So this one, if we were to move
- 10:25this scale, it would be clear over on this side.
- 10:32Again, the what is clear over on this side.
- 10:37We'll match it up here. And the why is probably closer
- 10:43to the middle ground somewhere. So here we are.
- 10:48We're headed to Jerusalem. We know what we're supposed to
- 10:51do, we somewhat know why, but we really don't know how.
- 10:56And as you study chapters 3 and four, notice what happens to
- 11:02their efforts to discover the how.
- 11:04And remember that God could have very easily given a handbook of
- 11:10instructions to Lehi to hand off to Nephi and Sam and Lehmann and
- 11:15Lemuel on exactly how to get the plates.
- 11:19But he didn't do that. There's something about the
- 11:22journey of discovery, the the struggle, the wrestle of going
- 11:27through life when you don't have all the answers.
- 11:31That's where growth comes. So you'll notice in chapter
- 11:33three they try two different ways to get the plates, 2
- 11:38techniques on the how and with each failure, the 1st and the
- 11:422nd, it pushes this how Further and further to the left They're
- 11:49left with fewer and fewer resources.
- 11:51They sent layman in to ask. That didn't work.
- 11:54They've tried to trade for the plates with their gold, silver,
- 11:58and precious things. That didn't work, and now
- 12:02they're left with very little as far as bargaining power to get
- 12:08these plates. And I love something that Sister
- 12:12Patricia Holland shared on a couple of occasions, something
- 12:15along the lines of it's not faith if you have anything else
- 12:20but God that you can rely on. And I love chapter four of First
- 12:24Nephi because as Sister Holland shared, they have to rely on God
- 12:31and God alone in order to get these plates and figure out the
- 12:35final how. So the the critical trigger
- 12:41point here is in chapter 4, verse six.
- 12:44Notice after he leaves Lehmann and Lemuel and and Sam in The
- 12:48Cave. It's night.
- 12:49It's dark. He's going into the city.
- 12:52Here's what it says. And I was led by the Spirit not
- 12:58knowing beforehand the things which I should do.
- 13:02I love that faith from Nephi. That's when scripture study can
- 13:07become more real to us today, as we look at our own life and
- 13:12realize, wait, God changes not. He's treating us very similarly
- 13:18to the way that he treats people in antiquity in these ancient
- 13:22scriptures that he doesn't give us all the answers.
- 13:26He often gives you an impression of what he wants you to
- 13:29accomplish and then he lets you work through the process of
- 13:32discovering what the the outcome should be and how you're going
- 13:38to accomplish that thing which the Lord has commanded you.
- 13:42So look at verse seven starts with the word.
- 13:45Nevertheless, it basically means it's a cause counter effect.
- 13:52So what comes before is the cause, and what came before.
- 13:55That was he had no idea what to do, but he was led by the
- 13:59spirit. Nevertheless, then puts greater
- 14:03emphasis on what's coming after. Nevertheless, I went forth.
- 14:10I love that that Nephi didn't become paralyzed by what he
- 14:14didn't know or by by his questions.
- 14:18He moved forward, focused on what he did know, and he knew
- 14:23that God was going to provide a way.
- 14:26He just didn't know what it was going to look like or how that
- 14:28was going to happen, but he went forth.
- 14:31So in your own family, in your own life, in your own covenant,
- 14:35path, discipleship, what an amazing thing for all of us,
- 14:40individually and collectively to be able to copy and paste that
- 14:44phrase. Nevertheless, I went forth in
- 14:48the face of all this ambiguity. I went forth so that today, not
- 14:54tomorrow, not next week, not next year.
- 14:56Today we can move forward on the covenant path in greater faith
- 15:01in God, trusting the words that He's given us through the
- 15:04scriptures and through His living prophets, and to be more
- 15:07faithful disciples to Jesus Christ.
- 15:10And as He came forth, He comes near the House of Laban, and he
- 15:15sees Laban passed out on the ground and through the course of
- 15:19the next set of verses. What you find is that this
- 15:23question of how gets moved here when he gets the first
- 15:30instruction from the Spirit. And before you know it, the Lord
- 15:36brings the question how firmly over in the this is how you're
- 15:41going to do it, Which all of a sudden creates a whole new
- 15:47series of questions where we take the question of why now,
- 15:54and the why becomes this huge question for him on this side.
- 16:01Why do I need to kill Laban in order to get the plates?
- 16:06God, why can't you make this easier?
- 16:09I love watching as these questions keep moving, sliding
- 16:15across the the, the board of our of our minds, so to speak, as
- 16:20these stories unfold. And the amazing thing to me is
- 16:26that there doesn't ever seem to be a point in Nephi's life where
- 16:31all of a sudden, all of the questions, The Who, what, when,
- 16:34where, why and how all end up on this side of the board under the
- 16:39exclamation mark. Where all of a sudden all of his
- 16:42questions are answered, everything's very clear, and
- 16:45there's no more Challenger opposition.
- 16:48But rather every answer that he gets seems to be a conclusion to
- 16:54one phase of his journey on the covenant path of discipleship
- 16:59that then opens up another step at an even higher level of his
- 17:04discipleship, involving more questions.
- 17:07Often different questions, but questions nonetheless.
- 17:14Now if you turn over to chapter 5, you get the story of Soraya
- 17:18and Lehigh, both of which are going through some issues here,
- 17:24struggling with some questions. Soraya, for instance, talks to
- 17:28Lehigh and says, Behold, thou hast LED us forth from the land
- 17:31of our inheritance, and my sons are no more, and we perish in
- 17:35the wilderness. Her mother's heart is breaking
- 17:39out there because those boys have not come home in the time
- 17:42frame that they should have have been able to return.
- 17:45And she now has some questions regarding the safety of her
- 17:50sons. And I love how Lehigh doesn't
- 17:55make her feel bad for what she's feeling.
- 17:59He reassures her questions with his assurances.
- 18:06He He tells her what he knows, rather than telling her what she
- 18:11should know or making her feel bad for what she's feeling.
- 18:16I love this, this principle here.
- 18:18Verse four, it came to pass that my father spake unto her,
- 18:21saying, I know that I'm a visionary man.
- 18:25For if I had not seen the things of God in a vision, I should not
- 18:27have known the goodness of God, but had tarried at Jerusalem and
- 18:32had perished with my brethren. So he's basically reassuring
- 18:36her. And then it says that in verse
- 18:407, when we had returned to the tent of my father, behold, their
- 18:46joy was full and my mother was comforted.
- 18:51You'll notice all those questions of why are we here?
- 18:55And what what are we doing? Lehigh.
- 18:58All of those things that were firmly rooted in a in a serious
- 19:02question category for Soraya have now moved solidly over into
- 19:07the absolute knowledge. And look at how she describes
- 19:12that in verse 8. And she spake saying, Now I know
- 19:17of a surety that the Lord hath commanded my husband to flee
- 19:21into the wilderness. And I also know of a surety that
- 19:24the Lord has protected my sons, and delivered them out of the
- 19:28hands of Laban, and given them power whereby they could
- 19:31accomplish the thing which the Lord hath commanded them.
- 19:34And after this manner of language did she speak.
- 19:37I love that, because what that tells us, This is an insight
- 19:41that I learned from Camille, from Uncolson years ago.
- 19:46Her point was that up to this point, Soraya didn't know for
- 19:52herself why they were out here in the wilderness.
- 19:56She didn't know where they were going.
- 19:57She hadn't received any witness from God.
- 20:00She was moving forward on the word of her husband alone.
- 20:06And through this experience, God now makes it known to her and
- 20:10gives her her own witness, her own independent testimony that
- 20:15they are on God's errand and that they are doing what the
- 20:18Lord wants them to do. And that is going to bless this
- 20:24entire group. For the next 8 years and beyond,
- 20:28especially these eight years traveling through the
- 20:30wilderness, once we get Ishmael and his wife and his daughters
- 20:33and children out into the wilderness, they're going to be
- 20:36many opportunities for Soraya to share her witness of what she
- 20:41knows. Because she's been through this
- 20:43process of struggling with what she didn't know and moving
- 20:47forward in faith anyway. And so she will be able to
- 20:50comfort others as they work through that similar process at
- 20:54their own level, with their own questions and their own answers
- 20:59and the Lord's own timing. But she'll at least be able to
- 21:03comfort them and help them to move forward on that eight-year
- 21:07journey out to the sea when life is going to get really hard for
- 21:11them. In closing, brothers and
- 21:16sisters, the scriptures aren't just books of answers.
- 21:21They're books of the best questions ever asked as well.
- 21:27And if we spend time in our scripture study looking not just
- 21:30for answers, but looking for relevant questions and how both
- 21:34of those are interacting, and it's not always just A1 or the
- 21:39other. Sometimes it's a sliding scale,
- 21:41sometimes it's a degree of certainty, a degree of
- 21:45uncertainty and learning to grow in our knowledge, which as we
- 21:52see it, the hand of the Lord and the guidance of the Lord in in
- 21:55ancient scriptures. It makes it easier for us to see
- 21:59the hand of the Lord in our life today, guiding us in this
- 22:04journey of discovery as we move forward in faith.
- 22:08I love the words from the hymn. Lead kindly light.
- 22:13Lead kindly light amid the encircling gloom.
- 22:17Lead thou me on the night is dark and I am far from home.
- 22:25Lead thou me on. Keep thou my feet.
- 22:30I do not ask to see the distant scene.
- 22:35One step enough for me. It's my prayer for all of us
- 22:42that our scripture study will be exactly that, Illuminate even
- 22:49just one step. Occasionally you'll you'll have
- 22:51a view of the distant scene. But for most of us, most of the
- 22:54time, it's one step enough. That motivation to move forward
- 23:00with greater faith in the Savior Jesus Christ, and to trust him
- 23:05and to love him enough to be obedient and to go forth even
- 23:11when we don't have all the answers.
- 23:13And I leave that with you. In the sacred name of Jesus
- 23:16Christ, Amen, now that you're loved.
- 23:21This week in the Gospel Explorer you will find 3 pathways.
- 23:25The one on the left is a pathway about how we can increase our
- 23:28trust in God. Special emphasis is made within
- 23:31the pathway of trusting God in times of trials.
- 23:35The middle branch is a deeper study of agency and if you watch
- 23:39this pathway you will get a master course on agency.
- 23:43The right branch is a doctrinal pathway on how to be led by the
- 23:46Spirit, including several amazing talks by prophets and
- 23:50apostles on how to receive personal revelation from this
- 23:53branch. There are also some amazing
- 23:55insights and evidences about the slaying of Laban steal and
- 23:59sacrifices away from the temple. While some critics in the past
- 24:03have tried to use these inclusions in the Book of Mormon
- 24:05as evidence of fraudulent work, recent discoveries and
- 24:08scholarship have proven things to the contrary.
- 24:11So if you are interested, these supplemental videos and
- 24:13information may be of interest to you.
- 24:17Thank you again for using the Gospel Explorer, and we hope you
- 24:20become closer to your savior through a deeper study of Come
- 24:23Follow Me.
