- 0:07The Montreal Expos faced the Philadelphia Phillies at Veterans Stadium for a Thursday afternoon game on August 11, 1977.
- 0:16Montreal was coached by Dick Williams, a new hire for the 1977 season, after the Expos lost 107 games in 1976.
- 0:25They had a lot of talent coming into 1977, with youngsters Gary Carter and Larry Parrish, along with rookies Warren Cromartie and Andre Dawson.
- 0:34Philadelphia entered the game red-hot, in first place in the NL East, with a 66-44 record under manager Danny Ozark.
- 0:42They were looking to repeat their successful 101-win season from 1976, despite getting swept by the Reds in the NLCS.
- 0:50Their appearance in the playoffs marked the first time in 25 years that the franchise was able to play in the postseason.
- 0:56This audio recording is from the Philadelphia Radio broadcast, featuring announcers Harry Callis and Andy Musser.
- 1:26Cash hitting a 280. Jim Cotts' next delivery is a fastball there for a strike call, and he's in front of Cash quickly, nothing and two.
- 1:40Time call by Cash, 0-2 to count to him, if you follow by Warren Cromartie, then Andre Dawson.
- 1:46A two-strike pitch, didn't miss by much, a breaking ball low, it's one and two.
- 1:56Now Cotts is set. Cash is not, he calls time. A ball and two strikes to count to Dave Cash.
- 2:07One-two pitch, just missed outside, it's two and two. Ozzy Virgil coaches a third, Billy Gardner at first for Dick Williams.
- 2:18Here's the two-two pitch, swinging a bouncing ball up the middle, Boa long run, great grab, low throw, gets by John Stone into the photographer's booth, and Cash will take second base.
- 2:31That'll be an infield single for Dave Cash, and he'll move to second on the throwing here on Larry Boa.
- 2:38That was a great play by Boa, but he couldn't make a throw, couldn't make an accurate throw certainly. He was way wide at first.
- 2:55So Dave Cash at second base, nobody out, it'll bring on Warren Cromartie. Cromartie hitting a 284.
- 3:05Cotts' pitch to him, swing and a drive to left field, Luzinski back, can't get it over his head, it bounces over the fence for a ground rule double.
- 3:14And the Expos are quickly on the board, one-nothing on Cromartie's run batted in double. Montreal leads at one-nothing, still nobody out here in the first.
- 3:27Well Cromartie had a tough double header against right hand pitching, he was hitless in both games, but he gets against the left-hander and pops the ball hard to left field.
- 3:40Here's Andre Dawson's center fielder hitting a 281. Pitch to him is low for a ball.
- 3:50One-nothing to count to Dawson. Expos have a run in, nobody out, Cromartie at second base.
- 3:58And then he committed himself on a slider that was low and inside, the count is one of one to Andre Dawson.
- 4:13On one pitch a change up curve ball missed a little bit inside. Count is two and one.
- 4:30Cotts' two-one pitch is outside, ball three, it's three and one.
- 4:40Cromartie second base, nobody out. Pitch on the way, line drive left field, Luzinski there, makes the catch.
- 4:47Well hit by Dawson, caught by the ball. That's one down and that'll bring up Tony Perez.
- 4:54Tony hitting 274, 10 home runs, 57 runs batted in.
- 5:09Cotts' pitch to Perez, low curve ball, high for a ball.
- 5:23That was stretched by Cotts and the pitch popped out of play.
- 5:27One-one to count to Tony Perez.
- 5:32Tony coming to the Montreal Expos from the Cincinnati Reds in the deal that sent Dale Murray and Woody Freyman to Cincinnati.
- 5:43Now the pitch fastball inside, it's two and one.
- 5:48Freyman of course has since quit baseball. Murray has had his problems at Cincinnati.
- 5:58Two and one to Perez, Cromartie second base and one out.
- 6:02Pitch to him is inside, ball three, and Cotts falls behind him three and one.
- 6:07This is Cotts' first start against Montreal. He's appeared twice previously against the Expos in relief with no decisions.
- 6:18Three-one pitch, line drive left center field, in the gap and all the way back to the fence.
- 6:23Cromartie scores, Perez on his way to second base and goes in standing with a double.
- 6:29So the Expos lead it two to nothing. Single by Cash, doubles by Cromartie and Perez.
- 6:36With one out it'll bring up Gary Carter.
- 6:41Carter is hitting 274.
- 6:45Nineteen home runs, he's knocked in 54 runs.
- 6:55The pitch to Carter is over for a strike called.
- 6:59One strike to Gary Carter.
- 7:06Next pitch to him is low for a ball, it's one and one.
- 7:16One-one pitch on the way, check swing, line drive, foul down the first base side.
- 7:24Another count is one and two to Gary Carter.
- 7:31Jay Johnstone playing first base today, Richie Ebner has a jammed shoulder.
- 7:41Kelly's are getting some bullpen activity, Warren Brewster starting to throw.
- 7:48One-two pitch, swing and a hard ground ball up the middle, gobbled up by Bowie.
- 7:52His throw, Carter is out by a step and on the play, Perez holds at second base.
- 7:59Two down, that'll bring up third baseman Larry Parrish.
- 8:03Parrish batting 248.
- 8:11Wayne Garrett jammed his knee sliding into second base in last night's double header.
- 8:16Garrett has been sent back to Montreal for X-rays.
- 8:24Tony Perez second base, two outs, pitch to Parrish is over for a strike called.
- 8:37Now the pitch on the way, nubbed a foul back behind the plate.
- 8:41Scott has a jump on Larry Parrish, nothing and two.
- 8:45Two runs are in for the Expos here in the first inning.
- 8:50Two outs, two strike pitch, just missed, one ball and two strikes account to Parrish.
- 9:05One-two pitch, and just a little bit low, it's two and two.
- 9:17Two pitch, wide ball, three and four count.
- 9:22Three and two account to Larry Parrish.
- 9:25Tony Perez at second base, two outs.
- 9:30Three-two pitch, right swing and a foul back, added stays, three and two to Parrish.
- 9:40Sam Mahias waiting on deck.
- 9:53Larry Parrish goes back to the on deck circle to get the tying to our cloth, full count to him.
- 10:04Here is Cotts stretch in a turnaround, looks back to second base, but Perez gets back in plenty of time.
- 10:11Sizemore trying to sneak behind him, there was no throw by Cotts.
- 10:17Two-nothing Montreal, top half of the first.
- 10:25Three-two pitch, swing and a line drive to right field,
- 10:29and then Bates McBride comes on, makes the catch and Parrish is out.
- 10:34The Expos get two in the inning on three hits, one error and one left.
- 10:38And at the end of one half, Montreal 2 Phillies coming to bat.
- 10:44Now the Phillies this afternoon facing veteran right-hander Jackie Brown.
- 10:48Brown has 1-8, lost 9, an earned run mark of 3.83.
- 10:53The first time originally by the Phillies, has pitched in the major leagues for the Washington Senators,
- 10:59Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians, and now the Expos.
- 11:05Jackie will throw a lot of breaking balls.
- 11:0934 years old, he comes out of Holdenville, Oklahoma.
- 11:13Bates McBride will be the first one to face him, and the pitch to Bates is a curve ball high for a ball.
- 11:22He's putting the count to McBride.
- 11:24Fake to be fouled by Larry Boa, then Mike Schmidt.
- 11:29Brown's one-hole pitch on the way.
- 11:31Another curve ball, grounded to center field for a base hit.
- 11:35So Bates McBride opens the Phillies' half of the first with a ground single to center.
- 11:42They can first face nobody out.
- 11:44That'll bring on Larry Boa.
- 11:47Boa batting 284, he'll head left against Jackie Brown.
- 11:53Brown is 1-0 this year against the Phillies, pitching brilliant relief against the Phillies on opening day.
- 12:00Getting the nod over Steve Carlton, 4-3.
- 12:03Here's the pitch to Boa, fastball high for a ball.
- 12:08That's the last time Carlton has lost here at Veterans Stadium.
- 12:13Steve has reeled off 13 wins in a row here at this ballpark.
- 12:19Throw to first base and bake McBride gets back.
- 12:31There goes McBride, swinging a drive into right center field, but drifting back is Andre Dawson, makes the catch on the run.
- 12:39McBride going, Boa hit it pretty well.
- 12:42They're caught by Andre Dawson.
- 12:44One down, that'll bring up Mike Schmidt.
- 12:47Schmidt hitting 277, 28 home runs, he's knocked in 65 runs.
- 12:53We're in the bottom half of the first inning, Montre all leading at 2-0.
- 13:01Bake McBride runner at first base, one out.
- 13:12Here's the pitch to Schmidt, fastball on the inside corner for a strike call.
- 13:27Now the stretch by Brown, and the pitch to Schmidt is low for a ball, it's 1-1.
- 13:35Brown came from the Cleveland Indians to Montre all in the deal that sent Andre Thornton to Cleveland.
- 13:441-1 to count to Schmidt, Brown's stretch, throw to first base, Bake McBride gets back.
- 14:01There's a stretch by Brown, and the pitch to Schmidt, face hit right field, Bake McBride will hold on at second base.
- 14:09Bam, he just gets it back into the infield, Mike Schmidt, Brown's a single to right.
- 14:14So the Phillies have two men on base, one out, and that'll bring on the Bulls.
- 14:19Greg Luzinski hitting 318, his batting average has been going down the last couple of weeks.
- 14:26But the home run and RBI production going well up.
- 14:3029 homers, 90 runs batted in.
- 14:34Six of his last seven hits have been home runs, pitch to the Bull, breaking ball inside for a ball.
- 14:45Bake McBride at second, Mike Schmidt at first, one out.
- 14:58Here's a stretch by Brown, and the pitch to the Bull, breaking ball, nub foul off the end of his path, the count 1-1.
- 15:07Birthday wishes this afternoon to William Harvey, celebrating his 67th.
- 15:14Phillies coming into this game with one seven games in a row, holding a two and one half game lead in National League East over the Chicago Cubs.
- 15:23Pitch to the Bull, swaying and a miss, a slider.
- 15:27Brown has the jump on him, one ball and two strikes.
- 15:33Bake McBride at second, Mike Schmidt at first, one out.
- 15:38One-two pitch, fastball laced into left field for a hit, Bake McBride being waved around third.
- 15:45Throw, Marty's throw goes over the Phillies dugout, two runs will score.
- 15:50Phillies have tied it at two.
- 15:57Throw, Marty, he did way over the head of Gary Carter, it took one bounce and into the stand.
- 16:06He had a shot, he had a shot at throwing out McBride, but he threw it over everybody's head.
- 16:16Carter had a shot at it, Brown was back there, but he didn't come anywhere near the ball, it took one hop over the dugout.
- 16:28One run batted in for Luzinski, the other run scoring on throw Marty's overthrow.
- 16:36And it's a two to two ball game here in the first inning, still only one out, Luzinski at second base.
- 16:42Here's Jay Johnstone hitting three oh nine, pitch to Jay Kerbo, high for a bowl.
- 16:58Well the Expos got two in the top half, Phillies have tied it here in the bottom half.
- 17:04Pitch to Johnstone, high again ball two, Luzinski now has 91 runs batted in on the year.
- 17:13He is second in the league moving in front of Ron Say behind George Foster who has one oh nine.
- 17:31Nothing to count to Jay Johnstone.
- 17:35Stretch by Jackie Brown on the pitch, high for a ball, it's three and oh.
- 17:40Jay will get a green light here if Brown will throw him a strike.
- 17:44He does have a base open, with a right hand batter coming up next, probably won't give him anything to hit.
- 17:54Here's a stretch, three oh pitch, low ball four, he walked in.
- 17:59First walk surrendered by Brown, Phillies have two men on base, one out.
- 18:03That'll bring up Gary Maddox.
- 18:06Maddox batting 278.
- 18:15Greg Luzinski at second base, Jay Johnstone first base, one out.
- 18:27Here's a pitch to Gary, breaking ball fouled straight back, one strike to count to Maddox.
- 18:37Maddox so far this year against Jackie Brown, nothing for four.
- 18:42Luzinski second, Johnstone at first.
- 18:51Here's a pitch to Maddox, another breaking ball, foul on a play.
- 18:56Brown will throw a lot of curve balls and sliders and change speeds with both pitches.
- 19:04Doesn't throw too many fast balls, he did try to sneak one by Luzinski.
- 19:10After throwing him three breaking balls and Greg ripped it in the left field.
- 19:16Two strike pitch, check swing foul, it stays on two.
- 19:26Due to two ball game, we're in the first inning.

- 20:25Parrish throws to Cash, one, the relay not in time to double up Maddox.
- 20:30They got Johnstone at second base for out number two and that'll bring up Bob Boone.
- 20:35Let's pause here for station identification.

- 20:40This is KYW Philadelphia.
- 20:41AccuWeather says it'll be continued warm and humid tonight with a low around 70 degrees.

- 23:46That count is ready, the pitch is low for a ball, it's two and one.
- 23:51Two balls and a strike to Chris Spire.
- 24:00The 2-1 pitch, line drive right field, Bake McBride back and he makes a great catch right near the rim of the warning flag.
- 24:08Bake almost did not get back far enough, pulled it out with a glove hand stamp.
- 24:13One down. I think it was hit a little better than he thought.
- 24:16Well it's obvious it was hit better than he thought. He kind of misplayed it but good recovery.
- 24:21That's one thing that speed will do. It'll make up for some mistakes out there.

- 29:34Well the pitchers have been helping themselves with a bat lately, Pritchinson drove in a run last night.
- 29:42He had a big game last Sunday, Cot here way over Dawson's head, I think Dawson was playing in a little shallow.
- 29:52Of course the Expos were looking for a bunt, but the outfielders shouldn't be looking for a bunt.
- 30:02Here's Blake McBride, he's singled and scored around his first time up.
- 30:07He's doubled to his own behalf in his last outing against Burt Hootin of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 30:12Here's the pitch to McBride and it's low for a ball.
- 30:16Jim pitched seven shutout innings in that ball game, did not get a decision, but it's a great baseball.
- 30:24Phillies lead three-two.
- 30:27Cot at second base and nobody out.
- 30:33Here's a pitch to Bates, swinging a foul back and just below us.

- 32:05Bates is a nice home run of the year.
- 32:10He went out of the strike zone for a high pass ball.
- 32:13He was just trying to pull the ball to move the runner,
- 32:18and he got a little extra bonus there, built nobody out.
- 32:27Bates McBride has honored for a case of tasty cake for him
- 32:30and wife Celeste on that home run.
- 32:32Here's Larry Boa.
- 32:34Boa ground ball to Dave Cash.
- 32:36Cash throws, Boa's out for the first out of the inning.

- 33:12The pitch to Schmidt, breaking ball.
- 33:18Mike Schmidt gets his second straight single.
- 33:22And for the Phillies, that is hit number six off Jackie Brown.
- 33:25Out comes Dick Williams, and this might be it for Brown.
- 33:31He's making the way to the bullpen where Don Stanhouse has been warming up.
- 33:35We have a pitching change for the X-Bowers.
- 33:37We're in the second inning at Veterans Stadium.
- 33:40Phillies lead the game five to two, and we'll be back after this brief pause.

- 34:51Don Stanhouse in first base, and Mike Schmidt is back in time.
- 35:07Now the stretch by Stanhouse.
- 35:10And the pitch to the ball is a fastball high.
- 35:12It skips away from Carter, but not far enough for an advance by Schmidt.
- 35:17One strike to count to Greg Lazinski.
- 35:29Don Stanhouse on for Jackie Brown here in the second inning.
- 35:41Stanhouse stretches, here's the pitch to the ball, swings and he misses it, a good fastball.
- 35:46One ball, two strikes.

- 37:00Five-two, Phillies lead the game.
- 37:02We're only in the second inning.
- 37:06There goes Schmidt. Pitch is a base hit to right field, nubbed right off the end of his bat.
- 37:11Schmidt didn't see it. Ball juggled by Mejias, but Schmidt will stay at third base.
- 37:18Schmidt stopped at second base, still had time to regroup and go to third.
- 37:23Phillies have runners at first and third.
- 37:26Right, Mike Schmidt had no idea where the ball was when he reached second.
- 37:31Stopped there, dead stop, but no play at all as Mejias also bobbled the ball.
- 37:40Like the Phillies will not be denied today, they're attacking the ball.
- 37:47Mike Schmidt at third base, Greg Lozinski first base, one down.
- 37:50Here's Jay Johnstil. Jay walked his first time up.
- 37:56Jay playing at first base for Richie Hebner who's out with a jammed shoulder.
- 38:00Jay Johnstil hitting three-oh-nine. Pitch to him, fastball high for a ball.
- 38:18Out of the stretch by Stanaus, swing and a high fly ball, right field.
- 38:23Mejias there, waits, makes the catch.
- 38:26He's taking his Schmidt, the throw to the plate is wide, way down the line, Mike scores.
- 38:32Ball gets away from Carter and Lozinski moves up to second.
- 38:39Well, that Mejias can throw the ball also.
- 38:41Ellis Valentine, who generally plays out there, has one of the best arms around that Mejias can throw.
- 38:47This throw was way off target, however.
- 38:50It's a velocity that way up the third base line and he'll probably get an error there.
- 38:58Johnstil on a sacrifice fly and a run batted in.
- 39:01Lozinski moves to second on the air on Sam Mejias.
- 39:05So the Phillies now lead at six to two with Lozinski at second base, two outs, and here's Gary Maddox.
- 39:15Maddox grounded into a fielder's choice his first time up.
- 39:23Here's the pitch to Gary and he swings and fouls one out of play.
- 39:35One strike to count to Gary Maddox.
- 39:38Greg Lozinski second base, two outs.
- 39:41The runs are in here on the second inning. Phillies leading by a score of six to two.
- 39:45Pitch to Gary is quite high. It's one to one.
- 39:52Ball on a strike to Maddox.
- 40:03One-one pitch to Gary, swing and a fly ball foul down the right field side over the picnic area, not a play.
- 40:11And Stan House in front of Maddox, one ball and two strikes.
- 40:20Phillies during the course of this season had trouble scoring runs for Jim Cot.
- 40:26Certainly not the case today.
- 40:30Phillies leading six to two in the second.
- 40:37Greg Lozinski second base, two down.
- 40:41One-two pitch. Ground ball hit the third, glove by Larry Parrish, his throw and Maddox is out.
- 40:47But the Phillies send eight men to the plate and score four runs in the inning.
- 40:52Four hits, big blow, Homer by Bate McBride. One error and one left.
- 40:57And at the end of two, it's Phillies six, exposed two.
- 41:01Well, he's leading this game, six to two. We move to the third for more play by play.
- 41:06Here's Andi Mustard.
- 41:08Thanks, Harry. And here's Warren Cromartie heading for the plate.
- 41:10He's a left-handed batter who's set a double the opposite way that bounced out of here for a ground rule double and knocked in a run.
- 41:17Cot's first delivery to him is high ball one.
- 41:20Cromartie hitting at 284. We've got a beautiful day at the ballpark. Sun is out right now.
- 41:25Here is a hard ground ball through on the right side of base hit between Sizemore and Johnstone.
- 41:30And a single to right field for Cromartie, his second hit of the ball game.
- 41:36Third straight inning, the Expos have had their leadoff man on with a hit.
- 41:43Andre Dawson will bat. He lined out the left field his first time up.
- 41:47Had just tied an all-time record. Leadoff man on for three straight innings.
- 41:55Held by many.
- 41:57Yes.
- 41:59Dawson the batter, he hit the ball hard but was out his first time up.
- 42:03Cot stretches.
- 42:05Dawson lays a bunt down and a good one down the third base side.
- 42:08Fielded by Schmidt. Fair hand does not grow. Now on corks one to second base, but Cromartie had held the bag.
- 42:14So that will be a bunt single for Dawson. Perfectly placed. Just fair down the third base side.
- 42:20It's like one of those days for pitchers.
- 42:23Well he's already had seven hits through two innings. Now the Expos threatening have six hits.
- 42:32Kill nobody out.
- 42:34And here's the man that they used to call Mr. RBI when he was with the Cincinnati Reds, Tony Perez.
- 42:40And he has an RBI in this game on a double to left center field.
- 42:43Perez a right hand of batter.
- 42:45Tony hits a hard ground ball to second base. Sizemore to Boa for one. Back to first. That's a double play.
- 42:51Sizemore with Boa turns it over at second base.
- 42:55Larry Boa has dropped his glove. It looks as though Larry may have been spiked out there.
- 42:59Advancing on the play, Cromartie to third.
- 43:01Larry really took a shot from Dawson.
- 43:07Larry a little late in getting the bag. He was playing Perez in the hole and had a long run to the batter.
- 43:12And he got there about the same time Dawson and the ball got there.
- 43:16That's dangerous. He did get hit. He's all right.
- 43:21And here's Gary Carter who grounded out the shortstop.
- 43:25So now two outs in the inning and Cromartie at third base with the Phils on top in the ball game, 6-2.
- 43:32Breaking pitch to Carter is over, strike one.
- 43:35Well if you're just getting out of work right now and it is about five o'clock, we've got room for you here at the ballpark.
- 43:40Plenty of seats available and a bright, sunshiny late afternoon.
- 43:44Perfect place to stop by.
- 43:47Here is the change-up by Cotton. He gets it over, 0-2 to Carter.
- 43:50Let's pause for station identification, the Phillies baseball network.
- 43:55This is K. Cotton.
- 43:57It's going to be cloudy, warm and humid tonight. No 72 and the attendance may have 94 degrees.
- 44:05Cobb leads Carter in the count, no balls and two strikes.
- 44:09Jim stretches and here's the pitch. He misses outside.
- 44:14Expos broke on top in this game with two in the first.
- 44:18Then the Phillies came back to tie it and take the lead.
- 44:20Here's a pop-up, shallow right field. Sizemore is back and he grabs it for the out. The inning is over.
- 44:27For the Expos in the third, no runs, two hits and one man left.
- 44:31At the end of 2-1 half, the Phillies lead at 62 and now it's time for a tasty break.
- 44:39Bob Boone will lead it off against reliever Don Stanhouse.
- 44:43As the Phillies bat in the third inning, Boone, Sizemore and Cotton will come to the plate.
- 44:48Stanhouse has a distinction this year.
- 44:51He is the only pitcher in the National League to hit a grand slam home run.
- 44:55He did it at Wrigley Field off Bill Bonham, but he was the losing pitcher that day.
- 45:00Here's Boone who was grounded out and is only at bat.
- 45:05First pitch by Stanhouse is inside, ball one.
- 45:09Boone is hitting at 283.
- 45:16Stanhouse next pitch is a breaking ball. Boone with a half swing fouls it back to the screen.
- 45:21One ball and one strike.
- 45:24Stanhouse working behind Jackie Brown, a reliever who had pitched very effectively against the Phillies earlier this year, got a start today.
- 45:32He's been in their starting rotation lately and the Phillies really hammered him.
- 45:38Next pitch to Boone is fouled away.
- 45:41One ball and two strikes.
- 45:46Phillies have won seven straight. They're trying for their longest win streak of the year today.
- 45:52Last year in their ever so successful season, they never won more than six in a row. They did that twice.
- 45:59Here's the one to Boone. It's a little bit low, two and two.
- 46:14Stanhouse has the sign from Carter. Here's his two-two delivery.
- 46:17Off the handle of the bat, looped into shallow right field, it's going to drop for a hit.
- 46:22Boone takes a wide turn. He's heading for second. Now he's in the middle and he goes back and he will get back.
- 46:27A single for Bob Boone and he certainly made it exciting.
- 46:34He wanted to go to second in the worst way. He got about halfway there. It's a good thing he stopped though because
- 46:40the cash he's got would have been too crisp fire there at the second base bag. It would have been plenty of time.
- 46:49That's the eighth hit of the ball game for the Phillies. Second off, Stanhouse. Here's Ted Sizemore.
- 46:55What a job Sizemore has been doing lately. Went five for seven in the doubleheader last night.
- 47:01Has already walked and scored in this game.
- 47:07Stanhouse from the stretch. Here's the pitch to Sizemore. Laced foul into the technique area down the right field side.
- 47:13Strike one. What a catch down there by a fan with a glove.
- 47:20He may have broken both legs to get it, but he loved it.
- 47:24Probably tell you it was worth it. One strike on Sizemore. Jim Cotter has already had a big hit in this ball game.
- 47:32Is on deck. Stanhouse from DuCoin, Illinois stretches and here's a ground ball. It's thrown to the left side.
- 47:40A base hit. Boone stops at second base. A single for Sizemore. Sizemore has batted safely now in nine straight ball games.
- 47:49His longest hit streak of the year.
- 47:57That brings up Jim Cotter with runners at first and second and nobody out.
- 48:02The boys have had something going every inning. They got two in the first, four in the second, and they are threatening again here in the third inning.
- 48:10Cotter was at the plate in what appeared to be a sacrifice situation following a leadoff walk to Sizemore his first time up.
- 48:17But Cotter did not sacrifice and laced a hard hit ball in the left center field that was over the head of Andre Dawson.
- 48:24It went for a double and it scored Sizemore. Here's the rotation play for Montreal and Stanhouse bounces a throw to Cash covering second.
- 48:33Good stop by Cash. That would have probably gone into center field and Boone would have at least gone to third and maybe more.
- 48:53Nobody is up in the Montreal bullpen right now.
- 48:59Stanhouse at the belt. Here's his pitch to Cotter. It's a sacrifice down the third baseline. They're letting it roll. It stays fair.
- 49:06It is picked up and fouled round by the third baseman Parrish standing right next to the bag. A perfect punt by Cotter.
- 49:13A base hit. It would have hit the bag. Parrish didn't let it roll any further. It would have gone out into the outfield.
- 49:22So that's the only play he had was hoping it would go foul.
- 49:28Bases loaded nobody out. That is the 10th base hit.
- 49:34Phillies have loaded them here on a pop fly single to right. A ground ball single to left and a bunt single to third.
- 49:42So, Blake McBride who homered in his last at bat is at the plate with the sacks full.
- 49:49Blake is two for two. He also single his first time up and the Expos have brought their infield in.
- 49:55They trail the ball game six to two. Stanhouse will work out of the stretch.
- 50:03The right hander stretches. Here's his pitch to McBride. Low and away it gets away from Carter but nobody's moving.
- 50:09Carter had to go halfway to the Phillies dugout to pick up that ball that trickled away.
- 50:15But Bone at third did not get the jump and decided to hold on.
- 50:24One nothing to count to Blake McBride.
- 50:29Blake homered here last night so he now has more homers in a Philly uniform than he did as a Cardinal. It's five four.
- 50:42Stanhouse ready to go back to work.
- 50:46One nothing to McBride. Swing and a miss as he fails to get a fastball.
- 50:51The Houston San Francisco game has gone to the fourth inning. They are tied two aside.
- 51:02One ball and one strike on Blake McBride.
- 51:05Phillies lead this ball game six to two trying for win number eight straight.
- 51:10Cubs are not playing today so the Phillies could have a three game lead as they go to Wrigley Field tomorrow afternoon.
- 51:17Pitch on the way to bake foul back to the screen.
- 51:20Pittsburgh Pirates will play later today. They'll be opening a series against the New York Mets.
- 51:37Scheduled starters in that game by the way. Pat Zachary for the Mets and Odell Jones for the Pirates.
- 51:44It's a one to count on Blake McBride.
- 51:49Bases loaded. Here's the pitch on the way to bake. Pop back foul.
- 51:58Out of play just above our heads. One ball and two strikes.
- 52:05The center fielder in the booth had his hands up as if to make the play.
- 52:09I was ready for it.
- 52:12I like those little pop flies. I don't like those line drive fouls.
- 52:16No I think this was a very playable foul.
- 52:20Phillies have them loaded with nobody out.
- 52:24Don Stanhouse picking up where Jackie Brown left off. He's been in a lot of trouble.
- 52:32He's ready to go.
- 52:34Here's the one to McBride. Swing and a piece of it. He fouled it back to the screen. Bake twisted all the way around. He really had a rip at that.
- 52:52Stanhouse seems like he's been around a long time but this is only his fourth year in the major leagues and he's still just 26 years of age.
- 53:00The Expos got him along with Pete McCannon from Texas for Willie Davis in December of 1974.
- 53:11Bases loaded with Phillies. It's Bob Boone at third, Ted Sizemore at second, Jim Cotter first. They all got singles.
- 53:19One and two the count on Bake McBride.
- 53:33Conference at the mound has broken up now and Stanhouse is ready to work.
- 53:37Here's the one two to Bake. It's a line drive into center field. Retreating is Dawson. He gets over, makes the catch.
- 53:43Tagging at third base is Boone. He will score and tagging at second base advancing to third is Sizemore and the Phillies lead the ballgame 7-2.
- 53:53Third RBI of the ballgame for Bake McBride.
- 54:00Holding at first base was Jim Cotter.
- 54:06That's the first run the Phillies have scored against Stanhouse. The Expo infield with one down will remain in.
- 54:12And here's Larry Boa, one of only two batters in the Phillies lineup that hasn't connected today.
- 54:17And we're only in the third inning. It's Boa and Maddox, the only two hitters who are 0-2.
- 54:22Larry's hit the ball hard twice, both of them caught.
- 54:28Boa batting 2-83. The Expos continue to keep that infield in.
- 54:38Runners on first and third with one away.
- 54:42Stanhouse ready to work on Boa. Misses on the outside. Ball one.
- 54:47This is a good squeeze situation, but I don't think the Phillies will do it with a five run lead.
- 54:53That kind of is rubbing it in the noses of the opposition. I think Boa will probably get away.
- 55:01Stanhouse stretches. Here's his pitch to Boa. And it's a line drive foul down the left field side.
- 55:08As you pointed out last night though, Rich, a lot of the traditional baseball rules have really gone out the window.
- 55:12That's true.
- 55:17They haven't gone out the window with everybody. Danny Ozark still has some compassion for the opposition.
- 55:23I don't think it's against his style, the squeeze run with a five run lead.
- 55:30It's a one-one count on Larry Boa. Stanhouse is ready to go. And here's the pitch to Larry.
- 55:35Swing and a miss.
- 55:39One and two to Boa.
- 55:44Phillies on their way to Chicago right after the ballgame. They'll leave directly for the airport.
- 55:49And we'll be on the air from Wrigley Field tomorrow afternoon over KYW and the Phillies radio network starting at 2.30 tomorrow afternoon.
- 55:56And the Phillies against their closest pursuers, the Cubs.
- 56:00Here is a little looper to third base and stepping on the bag over a third is Parrish for a double play.
- 56:06Just to comment on that little looper, that could have been an easy triple play had the Expos needed it because Cot was running and he was all the way down the second.
- 56:14So the inning is over and the Phillies do get one more run though. They do it on three hits and there is one man left on base.
- 56:21And the end of three, Phillies lead the Expos 7-2.
- 56:26Many times this year the Phillies have been guilty of not scoring runs for Jim Cot but not so this afternoon as they've given him a five-run jump.
- 56:40Phillies leading this ballgame 7-2. Here's Larry Parrish. Cot starts him off with a breaking ball. He pops it foul out of play.
- 56:46Strike one to Parrish. He lined out to Bake McBride in right field in his first time up.
- 56:53Cot's next delivery is low. One ball and one strike. Remember when the Phillies get back to town August 19th they'll be playing the Houston Astros that Friday night and it's free-holder top night.
- 57:03Foul chopped off the plate by Parrish. The count is one and two.
- 57:07That holder top is going to say all the good things wrapped up in one. Tasty cake and the Phillies.
- 57:18The one-two on the way to Parrish. It's a pop-up. Bob Boone staring up at it right at the plate, muscling with Parrish to move him out of the way.
- 57:25And Boone finally catches it about eight feet in front of a plate in fair territory.
- 57:30Parrish is out on a pop-up to Boone. Boone actually collided with Parrish twice trying to get into position to catch that pop-fly.
- 57:39One out on the fourth here's Sam Mejias. Mejias filling in in right field this afternoon after the injury to Alice Valentine.
- 57:51Valentine was sent to Methodist Hospital here in Philadelphia to have his left ankle x-rayed.
- 57:58Now look at that ankle before the ball game. It was really swollen up. He was hit by a foul ball in last night's ball game prior to the rain delay in game two.
- 58:07Big swing and a miss by Mejias. He chased a bad pitch.
- 58:13Mejias got an infield hit in his first hit back. There have already been 16 hits in this ball game.
- 58:20Caught misses high. One ball, one strike. In the fifth, the Giants have gone ahead of the Astros four to two.
- 58:29Next pitch is low a ball.
- 58:32Gary Alexander hit a San Francisco home run on the fourth with one on his third of the year.
- 58:38To separate those two teams, that's Mark Lemongelo pitching against Ed Hallecky.
- 58:42Ball tapped off the plate, first base side. Caught bare hands it, kind of shovels it over to first base and he got it there ahead of Mejias.
- 58:50A one-three play and Mejias is out.
- 58:54Like he was going up on the backboard and tipping a rebound.
- 58:58Tipped it right over to Jay Johnstone. Playing the bag today. Here's Chris Speier. He lined out to right field.
- 59:05Pills lead the ball game seven to two.
- 59:11Speier right-handed batter. The pitch to end fastball is high, ball one.
- 59:16Pitcher Don Stanhouse is on deck.
- 59:21Here's a curveball hammered through the hole. A base hit the left field. Speier singles between Boa and Schmit.
- 59:28And that's hit number seven for Montreal.
- 59:35Well he's about hit the Expos by three, but they lead the ball game by five. And here's Stanhouse.
- 59:45Stanhouse getting his first at bat of the ball game. He's hitting it two-eleven.
- 59:51Has the grand slam home run this year and those are the only four RBIs he has.
- 1:00:00Stanhouse takes inside, ball one.
- 1:00:14Cotts stretches. Here's his next delivery to Stanhouse. It's outside two and 0 to the Montreal pitcher Don Stanhouse.
- 1:00:25Jim Cotts facing the Expos for the third time this year, but this is the first time he has started against Montreal.
- 1:00:34The 2-0 pitch, check swing, pop fly foul out of play.
- 1:00:38Two and one to Don Stanhouse. Phillies have scored in every inning. They've come to the plate.
- 1:00:42Two in the first, four in the second. They added one more in the third.
- 1:00:47The Expos got their two in the first. Cotts has blanked them since then.
- 1:00:52Here's a foul back to the screen, two and two to Stanhouse.
- 1:01:03Needless to say, neither team worked out before the ball game today.
- 1:01:08After showering and talking briefly with reporters, most players didn't leave here last night until around four o'clock in the morning.
- 1:01:16Cotts now steps off. So today there was no infield, no batting practice.
- 1:01:21There was, of course, the annual father-children's game before the ball game, and that was fun as always.
- 1:01:30Stanhouse stays in there as he fouls another one back to the screen.
- 1:01:44Carlin against Renko at Wrigley Field tomorrow afternoon.
- 1:01:48Then on Saturday they'll be up against Rick Ruschel. He has won 11 straight games at Wrigley Field.
- 1:01:53Randy Lurch will pitch that ball game for the Phillies, and will send it back on radio as well as television.
- 1:01:58Curveball foul to the screen by Stanhouse. Two and two.
- 1:02:04Two outs in the inning. Spires at first base.
- 1:02:10Cotts hasn't walked anybody today, and he hasn't struck anybody out.
- 1:02:22Here's a fly ball hit into center field. Gary Maddox a few steps to his left, and he's there for the out.
- 1:02:27The inning is over. The Expos on the fourth. No runs. One hit and one left.
- 1:02:31At the end of three and a half, Phillies lead seven to two.
- 1:02:38Phillies fourth inning begins with Mike Schmidt, who is building another one of his on-base streaks again.
- 1:02:43Schmidt has been on base now six consecutive times. He walked three times in the second end of the double header last night.
- 1:02:49Was also on base on a fielder's choice, so he was on base every time last night, and he has singled both times up this afternoon, and he has scored both times.
- 1:02:59So six straight on base for Schmidt. He'll be followed by Luzinski and Johnstone as the Phillies battle the fourth inning.
- 1:03:06Leading Montreal seven to two. Right hander Don Stanhouse winds. Curve ball is low. Ball one.
- 1:03:21Phillies finishing up this homestand today. They have one-nine and lost only two on this homestand.
- 1:03:29Next pitch to Schmidt. A fastball is over for a strike. Lost one game in the Giants series. Lost one game in the Padres series.
- 1:03:38Swept the Dodgers. Lead the Expos two-nothing.
- 1:03:47Here's the one-one to Schmidt. Swing and a foul back to the screen. He just got a piece.
- 1:03:52Got another fine crowd here this afternoon. Phillies had 46,000 here last night for a rainy double header that stretched way into the morning hours.
- 1:04:04We really had a milkman's matinee last night and today.
- 1:04:14Schmidt tires of waiting and steps out. The count on him is one ball and two strikes.
- 1:04:23Here's the one-two from Stanhouse. Pop-fly foul by Mike Schmidt out of play.
- 1:04:30Count holds with a ball and two strikes.
- 1:04:33Because of an earlier rainout, the Phillies and the Cubs will play a double header at Wrigley Field Sunday.
- 1:04:39Barry Christensen and Jim Lomborg pitch for the Phillies. Ray Burris and Bill Bonham go for Chicago.
- 1:04:46So that's a four-game series.
- 1:04:50Next pitch to Schmidt. He misses inside. The count is level. Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:04:56Schmidt and Luzinski, the number three and four hitters in the Phillies lineup, are combined four for four today.
- 1:05:06The two-two is high, ball three. The count runs full on Schmidt.
- 1:05:10Stanhouse hasn't walked anybody. The expo starter, Jackie Brown, walked two.
- 1:05:24Ready for the full count delivery to Schmidt and it's a called third strike. Mike strikes out.
- 1:05:31First strike out for a Montreal pitcher this afternoon. That's one out on the fourth inning and here's Luzinski.
- 1:05:40Greg has singled both times at the plate. Has driven in one run.
- 1:05:44It's 91st of the year. That moves him ahead of Ron Say and in the second place in the National League behind George Foster.
- 1:05:59First pitch to the ball is over for a strike.
- 1:06:11Greg Luzinski entertaining some people again in his bowl ring today.
- 1:06:15They asked for a club of Philadelphia out there this afternoon.
- 1:06:20Next pitch is high to the ball. One ball and one strike.
- 1:06:27Phillies seeking their 67th win this afternoon.
- 1:06:31And right now they've got a two and a half game margin in the National League East.
- 1:06:35Could be three if they win because the Cubs aren't playing.
- 1:06:38Stanhouse fires a change up and misses.
- 1:06:45Two balls and one strike to count on Luzinski.
- 1:06:50Now the Astros have come back to tie that game with the Giants. It's four all in the fifth.
- 1:06:56Stanhouse misses high three and one.
- 1:07:05One out and nobody on for the Phillies in the fourth inning. They have scored every time they've been to the plate today.
- 1:07:17Here's Stanhouse three one pitch. Bull checks. It's a fastball. Misses high ball four and he's on base for the third straight time.
- 1:07:25That's the first walk given out by Stanhouse.
- 1:07:29It brings up Jay Johnstone who was walked by starter Jackie Brown.
- 1:07:34And he also had a sacrifice fly ball to right field that scored a run.
- 1:07:42Jay was not in the Phillies original lineup today. They were playing Rich Hebner at first base but Hebner is bothered by a sore shoulder.
- 1:07:54Stanhouse stretches. Here's the pitch to Jay. It's outside corner of strike.
- 1:08:00Jay hitting a three oh nine.
- 1:08:06Those on top in this game seven to two. They have out hit Montreal ten to seven.
- 1:08:21Here's the one strike pitch to Jay and it's a line drive base hit the right field.
- 1:08:25Greg Luzinski will hold at second base and the Phillies have runners at first and second with one down.
- 1:08:30And the Phillies just keep coming at them today.
- 1:08:34That is the 11th hit of the ball game for the Phillies. We're in the fourth inning.
- 1:08:44Here's Gary Maddox. So far Maddox and Bo are the only two who have not joined the hit parade.
- 1:08:51Gary is over two grounded into a force out and grounded out third to first.
- 1:08:58Maddox batting 276.
- 1:09:04Breaking ball to Gary is outside ball one.
- 1:09:10Maddox has already knocked in 50 runs for the Phillies this year.
- 1:09:24Stanhouse delivers high. Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:09:37Nobody is up in the Montreal bullpen right now with the Phillies leading it by five runs.
- 1:09:42Things are in the grip of Don Stanhouse.
- 1:09:46Here's the two nothing to Maddox foul balled off the right side.

- 1:11:00Hit off the plate and took a huge hop and didn't come down until it landed in the right field picnic area.
- 1:11:07So the count is full on Maddox. Three balls and two strikes.
- 1:11:11And Gary is headed back to the dugout. He's going to get a new piece of lumber.
- 1:11:20Full count on Gary Lee Maddox. Gary is batted safely in seven straight ball games.

- 1:13:54Starters still working. Mark Lemongelo for the Astros. Ed Helicki for the Giants.
- 1:13:59Gary Alexander with the game's only home run. He hit it for the Giants and the fourth with one on his third of the year.
- 1:14:17Stanhouse at the ball. Here's his 0-2 to Boone. Reaches out and just gets a piece of the ball. Fouls it back to the screen.
- 1:14:34Still 0-2 to Bob Boone.
- 1:14:50Stanhouse looking in to Carter for a sign. Has it now? And here's the 0-2 to Boone.
- 1:14:55It's a fly ball not very well hit the right field coming in as Mejias and he grabs it for the out.
- 1:15:01Phillies retired in the fourth without scoring for the first time. No runs, one hit and two left.
- 1:15:06At the end of four, Phillies lead the Expos seven to two.

- 1:18:47Dawson lines one foul out of play, right side.
- 1:18:54Billy's will go to Chicago tonight.
- 1:19:00Big four game series for the Cubs. Here's a grounder to Schmidt. No pass Schmidt, a base hit.
- 1:19:06Just out of the reach of Mike Schmidt going hard to his left so Dawson has a two out single.
- 1:19:14And the batter will be Tony Perez who has doubled and hit into a double play.
- 1:19:21He's also knocked in a run. Tony batting 275.

- 1:20:08Pitch to Perez is high and inside. Phillies lead seven to top of the fifth.
- 1:20:16Dawson on first two outs.

- 1:20:33Phillies batting in the fifth. They lead the Expos seven to.

- 1:24:11Phillies have 12 hits already.
- 1:24:17McBride has two of those, one of those, a two-one home run.
- 1:24:28Well, the Phillies like that trade with the Cardinals, and I guess the Cardinals like the deal that gave them Tommy Underwood.
- 1:24:34Underwood's pitching pretty decent ball for St. Louis.
- 1:24:39McBride playing very fine grand to baseball here in Philadelphia.
- 1:24:48Strike one to count to Bate McBride.
- 1:24:53Cott leads off second, a pretty good lead.

- 1:25:32Pitch to McBride, low on outside.
- 1:25:40Ball one, strike two to Bake.
- 1:25:52Don Stanhouse evidently pitches with the philosophy that as long as you got the ball in your hand, the hitter can't hit it.
- 1:26:00Because he really hands on to it.
- 1:26:04He's ready now.

- 1:27:31Going to be almost impossible to rain out a game here at the ballpark.
- 1:27:38Five hours of rain delays.
- 1:27:41Philly did win two games.
- 1:27:45I guess the Expos must have been pretty discouraged after that long night.
- 1:27:52They lost two games.
- 1:27:56Continues off second. One out.
- 1:27:59Seven two-lead Phillies. Fifth inning.

- 1:29:12Cot leads off second. McBride off first. One down.
- 1:29:17Stanhouse out of the stretch. Here's the pitch. It's outside. Ball one.
- 1:29:25Expos will go from here to St. Louis for the weekend.
- 1:29:36Ball one to count to Bowe.
- 1:29:41Stanhouse ready.
- 1:29:43Ground ball to second. Might be a double play. Cash is second to one.
- 1:29:47First not in time for the double play. Bowe beats the relay throw from Spire.
- 1:29:53It was hit sharply right at Dave Cash.
- 1:29:58We get the fourth play at second. We'll send four reserve seat tickets along to Tony Fiddler here in Philadelphia.
- 1:30:05Well, they have runners now on first and third, two outs.
- 1:30:09And the batter will be Mike Schmidt. Schmidt is 2-3 today. Two singles.
- 1:30:15And a strikeout. He's hitting $281. He's swinging for $2,000 for

- 1:30:29Cot on third. Bowe on first. Two down.
- 1:30:37Schmidt slain for $2,000 for Fran Caulfield and Darby, Pennsylvania.
- 1:30:43Stanhouse checks the runners. Here's the pitch.
- 1:30:46Ground ball shortstop. Hit hard. Spire grabs it. Goes to second for the force.
- 1:30:51And that will retire the side. We'll send four reserve seat tickets along to Fran Caulfield and Darby PA.
- 1:30:57For the Phillies, no runs. One hit. Two left on after five full innings.
- 1:31:02It's a full seven. The Expos 2, and now it's time for a tasty break.
- 1:31:10Montreal here in the sixth inning, the leadoff of Gary Carter.
- 1:31:16Carter's 0 for 2 in the day, batting 272. The Phillies lead 7-2.
- 1:31:21Top of the sixth, Jen Cot. Winning the pitching for the Phillies.
- 1:31:25He gave up two runs, and the first has held the Expos off since then.
- 1:31:29Here's a line drive left center field. This will be extra bases.
- 1:31:32The ball off the left center field fence.
- 1:31:35Carter is staying at second with a stand-up double, as Maddox finally gets the ball in.
- 1:31:42So Carter with his first hit, a double to left center.
- 1:31:46And Montreal with a runner on second, nobody out.
- 1:31:50Well, the group here is St. Clair Old Timers Baseball Association of St. Clair, Schuylkill County.
- 1:31:59And Woffin County, Pennsylvania. Old time players.
- 1:32:05Here's a line drive by Parrish, the left center field. This will be an extra base hit.
- 1:32:10Carter rounding third will score easily. Parrish into second with a double.
- 1:32:15And all of a sudden on two swings of the bat, it's a 7-3 ball game.
- 1:32:19The Phillies leading. If Parrish are running bad at end.
- 1:32:26So Parrish and Carter with line drive doubles the left center.
- 1:32:33And the Phillies lead now cut 7-3. Gene Garber starting to throw in the Phillies' bullpen.
- 1:32:43Well, the Expos have a lot of hits. They have 10, only three runs so far.
- 1:32:55And they've got a cut pitch.
- 1:32:58And Mahias with a line drive base hit to right field.
- 1:33:03Parrish stopping at third.
- 1:33:06So the Expos with three straight line drive base hits.
- 1:33:10Have runners at first and third, still nobody out.
- 1:33:14And shortstop Chris Spire coming to bat.
- 1:33:29So the Expos with 11 hits now, and they have cotton some trouble here in the sixth.
- 1:33:35As Garber continues to heat up.
- 1:33:37In field back at double play depth, Spire takes low, ball one.
- 1:33:50And Spire swings and misses at a high pitch, one-on-one account.
- 1:33:55Spire's one for two with a single. He's hitting 2-30.
- 1:34:02Parrish and Mahias the base runners.
- 1:34:06Spire takes a little low, two-on-one account.
- 1:34:09Phillies lead 7-3, the Expos trying to get some more runs in here.
- 1:34:19We're in the sixth inning. Spire takes inside, ball three.
- 1:34:32Pete McCannon out of the on-deck circle.
- 1:34:36Spire takes high, ball four, and the bases are loaded, still nobody out.
- 1:34:46Sacks full of Expos, nobody out.
- 1:34:52Pete McCannon batting for Stanhouse.
- 1:34:58Danny Ozark is coming out of the dugout and just guessing, probably off of Jim Cotts.
- 1:35:09Let's pause for station identification on the Phillies baseball network.
- 1:35:14This is KYW News Radio, 10-16 Philadelphia, action weather calling for partly cloudy skies warming here tonight with a low of 72 degrees.
- 1:35:30Danny Ozark has motioned to the bullpen and that will be all for Jim Cotts.
- 1:35:36Gene Garber will come in. We have a pitching change for the Phillies.
- 1:35:40We score the Phillies 7, the Expos 3, and we'll be back right after this brief pause.

- 1:37:44I guess it didn't have his size.
- 1:37:48Looks like it would be good for a cold wave.
- 1:37:58Well, Garber is in trouble. Bases loaded, nobody out.
- 1:38:02We'll face Pete McCannon.
- 1:38:08Expos already have one run in here.

- 1:38:22Pete McCannon the batter. Garber's record, 6 wins, 5 losses, 2.95 ERA.
- 1:38:29McCannon the batter, right-hand batter, hitting 2-30. The infielders back at double play depth.
- 1:38:35Garber's pitching out of the stretch. First pitch, swing and a miss on a change-up, strike one to McCannon.
- 1:38:43Garber giving McCannon good motion on that change-up.
- 1:38:55We're in the sixth, the Expos trying to get back in this game.
- 1:39:01Strike one to Pete McCannon, McCannon closed stance.
- 1:39:07Garber sets the pitch. Slider, and I believe a swing and a miss. Yes, he did.
- 1:39:15First base umpire Frank Pulley on the appeal said, yes, he swung, so two strikes on McCannon.
- 1:39:26He's been fooled on a change-up on the slider.
- 1:39:31Garber sets again. Pitch on the way. Ground ball foul past third.
- 1:39:39Count stays at two strikes on Pete McCannon.
- 1:39:4523 hits in the game here in the sixth inning. The Phillies with 12, the Expos with 11.
- 1:39:52The Phillies still lead by four runs.

- 1:40:40First pitch to Cash. Fly ball hit well to right field, McBride going back, still going until he's head.
- 1:40:47He misjudged the ball and lost it. One run is in, and now while the ball is dropped in the infield,
- 1:40:54the Phillies would have had somebody out of there because the Expos had clogged up third base.
- 1:41:01Dave Cash is hurt. He injured his ankle up the way, rounding first.
- 1:41:06But he'll get a long single and a run battered in, and now it's a 7-4 ball game.
- 1:41:12Bases still loaded, one out.
- 1:41:15The Expos clogged up the bases a little bit. I think they thought that ball would be caught, and maybe it should have been.
- 1:41:22Now, Bate McBride is out there in a dead sun field, and he may have lost that ball by Cash,
- 1:41:28but he didn't get back in the ball. It went over his head for a single.
- 1:41:33Now, he was on third along with Spire, but the ball, the relay throw, was dropped by Sizemore,
- 1:41:43and by the time he recovered it, Spire had retreated to second base.
- 1:41:47Now, Cash is going to have to leave the ball game.
- 1:41:52Cash hurt his ankle, running the bases. Dave gets his second hit.
- 1:41:59They've got a run battered in.
- 1:42:03It's 7-4, Phillies lead. The bases are still loaded, one down.
- 1:42:19Pepe Frias running for Cash. Saks loaded one out. The batter is Warren Cromarty.
- 1:42:25He's two for three in the day, with a single and a double and a run battered in.
- 1:42:30Pitch to him. He's inside, ball one.
- 1:42:387-4, Phillies lead. The Expos still threatening. Bases loaded, one out.
- 1:42:43Sixth inning. Garber out of the stretch, the pitch.
- 1:42:48Check swing, ground ball. Garber feels it hurt home for one first.
- 1:42:52Double play! Oh boy! Big double play!
- 1:42:57A little ground ball to Garber. He fired home to Boone. They got the force.
- 1:43:02Boone fired to John Stoner first, and they just barely got Cromarty.
- 1:43:06And that is a big double play.
- 1:43:10Two runs for the Expos. Four hits, two left on.
- 1:43:15After five and a half, the Phillies still lead in the game, 7-4.
- 1:43:23Bill Atkinson is the new Montreal pitcher. Pepe Frias will stay in the game in place of Cash and play second base.
- 1:43:31And Greg Lezinski will lead off for the Phillies here in the sixth.
- 1:43:36Those lead 7-4. Lezinski down three times, two singles and a walk.
- 1:43:43And he's knocked in a run. Greg takes inside, ball one. Lezinski batting 3-22.
- 1:43:51It'll be Lezinski, John Stoner, Matt Oxtoface, right-hander Bill Atkinson.
- 1:43:57Next pitch is a called strike. Ball one, strike one to Lezinski.
- 1:44:09Atkinson's pitch swing and a miss.
- 1:44:13Atkinson seems to give Lezinski a little trouble on that curve ball he's throwing.
- 1:44:19He seems to take some velocity off the pitch.
- 1:44:23One-two pitch, strike three called, and that's the curve ball over.
- 1:44:31Throw the ball out on strikes, one down.
- 1:44:35And Jay Johnston the batter. Jay has walked, knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly and single.
- 1:44:43Officially Johnston is one for one in the game, batting 3-12.
- 1:44:49Atkinson's pitch turn is a called strike.
- 1:44:567-4 lead Phillies, bottom of the seventh.
- 1:45:02Off-speed pitch is outside to Johnston. 24 hits in the game, each team with 12.
- 1:45:09The Phillies have the most runs, they lead by three.
- 1:45:131-1 pitch. Hit a mile but foul. Johnston hit a beat but pulled a foul.
- 1:45:22Ball one, strike two to the Jay bird.
- 1:45:28Jay is in the ball game because Heppner has a sore elbow, sore arm, sore shoulder.
- 1:45:37Heppner on the left arm.
- 1:45:40Next pitch by Atkinson is low, two and two count.
- 1:45:44Houston has gone ahead with a giant 7-5, they're in the seventh inning.
- 1:45:502-2 pitch is outside, full count to Jay.
- 1:45:59Little right-hander, Bill Atkinson.
- 1:46:032-2 delivery. Ball four, they lost him.
- 1:46:08Johnston's on again.
- 1:46:11Third time Johnston has been on first.
- 1:46:18One down, the batter Gary Maddox.
- 1:46:20Gary's 0-3, batting 2-76.
- 1:46:31Atkinson will pitch out of the stretch.
- 1:46:35Checks the runner. Maddox takes a called strike.
- 1:46:46Johnston leads off first. Phillies leading 7-4, sixth inning.
- 1:46:50There's a loop for right field, might drop for base hit it does.
- 1:46:53Johnston rounding second, he's going to third.
- 1:46:56Goal from right field is cut off, so the Phillies on Maddox is single.
- 1:47:01Half-runners on first and third.
- 1:47:03One down, and the batter's babooned.
- 1:47:14Johnston at third, Maddox at first, one out.
- 1:47:19That was Maddox's first base hit in the ball game.
- 1:47:24The unbound lineup now is hit except Laurie Boa.
- 1:47:31Booney is officially one for two with a single.
- 1:47:34Hits a foul ball right off his foot.
- 1:47:39That'll hurt, strike one on Boone.
- 1:47:43Boone scored a run today, he's hitting 2-83.
- 1:47:52Phillies with a chance to get on the board again.
- 1:47:57Runners at first and third, one down, 7-4 lead, sixth inning.
- 1:48:08Atkinson ready to pitch.
- 1:48:11Booney ground ball to short, might be a double play.
- 1:48:14Second for one, the ball is dropped.
- 1:48:16Everybody's safe.
- 1:48:17Johnston scores, Maddox going to third as the ball tickles into center field.
- 1:48:24Now, Frias will get an error I believe.
- 1:48:27That was a double play ball and a break for the Phillies.
- 1:48:31And the Phillies now lead at 8-4.
- 1:48:36That looked like a lead pipe since double play ball.
- 1:48:38Boone will get a run batted in.
- 1:48:43Johnston scores, Maddox all the way to third.
- 1:48:48And the Phillies lead at 8-4 with runners at first and third still one out.
- 1:48:52Here's Ted Sizemore.
- 1:48:56Sizemore, one for two with a single, takes a call, strike.
- 1:49:09Sizemore batting 278, the runners lead off.
- 1:49:14Looks like a squeeze bunt.
- 1:49:15It was, but it's fouled.
- 1:49:19Phillies going with a squeeze bunt, but Sizemore fouled it off.
- 1:49:25He had to reach way outside and try to bunt that ball.
- 1:49:28He didn't get a piece of it.
- 1:49:31So Sizemore now has two strikes on him.
- 1:49:39Well, the run's getting a little tighter here in Danny Ozark going for,
- 1:49:44trying to get an extra run.
- 1:49:49Strike two to count to Sizemore.
- 1:49:52Pitch in the way, stuck him out on a bad pitch.
- 1:49:58Sizemore big cut, but he strikes out.
- 1:50:01Gene Barber's going to bat for himself.
- 1:50:04So two away now.
- 1:50:14If Barber likes to hit, he doesn't get to hit very often.
- 1:50:17He's 0-4 in the year.
- 1:50:20Two on, two outs.
- 1:50:24Atkinson's pitch inside, ball one.
- 1:50:31Bill's leading 8-4 now, bottom of the sixth.
- 1:50:38Atkinson sets, checks the runner.
- 1:50:40Here's the pitch.
- 1:50:41Barber fouls it off.
- 1:50:44Strike one to Garber.
- 1:50:54May I be so bold to ask you, Andy?
- 1:50:58Never mind.
- 1:50:591-1 pitch.
- 1:51:00Ground ball towards first.
- 1:51:02Perez has it.
- 1:51:03Steps on the bag.
- 1:51:05Garber's out on that.
- 1:51:06He'll retire the side.
- 1:51:07One run, one hit, one error.
- 1:51:09Two left on.
- 1:51:10At the end, the sixth full.
- 1:51:12It's the Phillies 8, the Expos 4.
- 1:51:18Tommy Hutton will come in the ball game and play first place for the Phillies, take Johnstone out of the game.
- 1:51:26The fans are going to have the world's largest orchestra out here on Sunday night, August 21st, conducted by the great Fred Waring.
- 1:51:36The Phillies will play in Houston.
- 1:51:37Now, that is Sunday night, a 7 p.m. start, August 21st.
- 1:51:42All fans welcome to bring their own instruments to the ballpark.
- 1:51:45And those of you who do not have an instrument will receive a complimentary kazoo when you enter the park.
- 1:51:53Sunday night, August 21st, Fred Waring will conduct the world's largest orchestra.
- 1:52:04How about that?
- 1:52:07Andy Nusser, 7th inning.
- 1:52:09Andy, what instrument will you bring to the ballpark?
- 1:52:13I never really learned to play one.
- 1:52:14I took piano as a kid, Rich, but I don't think I ought to bring one of them down here.
- 1:52:19Here's Andre Dawson.
- 1:52:21Dawson has two hits and three times up this afternoon.
- 1:52:24Right hand of batter swings and misses at Garber's first pitch, strike one.
- 1:52:29You look like an old harmonica type to me.
- 1:52:34I suppose I could.
- 1:52:35That's not too far from a kazoo.
- 1:52:37Same technique, right?
- 1:52:38You can carry it anyway.
- 1:52:39Yeah.
- 1:52:40Swing and a miss at a high pitch by Garber.
- 1:52:42No balls and two strikes.
- 1:52:44Dawson to be followed by Perez and Carter.
- 1:52:47The Expos again behind by four runs.
- 1:52:50They did trail by as many as five.
- 1:52:55Here's Garber's O2.
- 1:52:56Swing and a miss.
- 1:52:57He strikes out Andre Dawson.
- 1:52:59Second strike out for Garber.
- 1:53:02That was a big man on the news heart, they call it.
- 1:53:06You ever see one of those?
- 1:53:08I don't think so.
- 1:53:10Nice little instrument.
- 1:53:11Can you still play it?
- 1:53:13Our engineer, Dave Troy, he knows what they are.
- 1:53:17You didn't lose your technique somewhere, huh?
- 1:53:19No, I can play it.
- 1:53:21Perez takes a strike.
- 1:53:24Tony is one for three, an RBI double in the first inning.
- 1:53:27He's grounded into a double play and flying out the right field.
- 1:53:32Here's one foul at the plate.
- 1:53:34Garber ahead on the count.
- 1:53:35No balls and two strikes to Perez.
- 1:53:43The Expos have announced that Dave Cash left the ballgame
- 1:53:46because of a sprained right ankle.
- 1:53:49They've got the only hit that Garber has given up
- 1:53:52since coming on in a jam last inning.
- 1:53:54Here's a pop-up and foul ground wide at first.
- 1:53:56Tommy Huffman comes over, but that one goes into the crowd.
- 1:54:03Count stays at 0-2 on Tony Perez.
- 1:54:10Jim Cot is still the pitcher of record for the Phillies.
- 1:54:13He worked into the sixth inning.
- 1:54:16And the Expos starter, Jackie Brown, is on the hook.
- 1:54:21Here's the 0-2 to Perez, and a change-up is over
- 1:54:25for a called third strike.
- 1:54:27Garber's gotten such good mileage out of that pitch,
- 1:54:29and here he gets a strikeout.
- 1:54:34Two batters, two strikeouts in the seventh.
- 1:54:36Gary Carter, the hitter, he's one for three, a double,
- 1:54:39and he scored a run last inning.
- 1:54:43Phillies lead the ballgame eight to four.
- 1:54:47There have been 25 hits in the ballgame.
- 1:54:49Phillies have the margin by one, 13-12.
- 1:54:54Breaking ball over to Carter, strike one.
- 1:54:58Expos have lost five of the last six games.
- 1:55:02They're still in fifth place in the National League East.
- 1:55:05Garber misses outside, one ball and one strike.
- 1:55:08They trail the Phillies' starting action today by 15-1.5.
- 1:55:20Here's the 1-1 to Carter, and it's a strike on the inside corner.
- 1:55:23He started to go after it, then held up, and it was a called strike,
- 1:55:26and Carter is unhappy about the call.
- 1:55:31Walks away from the plate, shaking his head.
- 1:55:35One ball and two strikes. Garber's count on Gary Carter.
- 1:55:43Phillies will be back here at the ballpark a week from tomorrow night.
- 1:55:47Up against the Houston Astros, here's the pitch to Carter low inside, 2-2.
- 1:55:55Just that weekend series of Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday afternoon series,
- 1:55:59and then the Phillies are back on the road for another week,
- 1:56:01so you better get your tickets for that series.
- 1:56:03Going in a miss by Carter, Jane Garber strikes out the side.
- 1:56:07Exposed out on the seventh inning at the end of 6-1-2, Phillies lead it 8-4.
- 1:56:13Meg McBride followed by Larry Boa and Mike Schmidt.
- 1:56:18Well, our flagship station, KYW, has honored us all here in the booth today
- 1:56:23with KYW t-shirts, very similar to the ones that Rich wears every day.
- 1:56:31I'm wondering, Andy, why KYW and their wisdom,
- 1:56:41you guys really only gave me one.
- 1:56:45Probably know that your kids are out of the t-shirt stage.
- 1:56:49They expect you to down that one, Rich.
- 1:56:53There's Atkinson's pitch to McBride.
- 1:56:55A breaking ball is high and outside, ball one.
- 1:56:58I should have to say that's a bright yellow, wouldn't you?
- 1:57:02The orange in it?
- 1:57:04Eye-catching.
- 1:57:06You're the worst looking shirt I've ever seen.
- 1:57:09Like I said, just like the others you wear, here's one fouled into the dugout.
- 1:57:13The only thing worse than getting one of these would be getting three.
- 1:57:25One ball and one strike to count to McBride.
- 1:57:28I was going to keep them, but I guess the way you put it, we ought to send them back.
- 1:57:32Here's the 1-1 to Baker.
- 1:57:34Fly ball out of play along the third base side, 1 and 2.
- 1:57:37Just kidding, of course, old KYW.
- 1:57:42Got to have a sense of humor, right?
- 1:57:46Kelly's on top in this ball game, 8 to 4.
- 1:57:49Baker's already hit a home run today.
- 1:57:52He's also had a single.
- 1:57:54He's also had a walk.
- 1:57:55There's a pitch outside.
- 1:57:572 and 2 to McBride.
- 1:57:58He's also driven in a run on a sacrifice fly, so officially right now, Baker's 2 for 2.
- 1:58:05Inside ball three, the count is full to McBride.
- 1:58:16Atkinson winds.
- 1:58:17Here's the right-hander's pitch.
- 1:58:18It's a line drive to right field, retreating is Mahias.
- 1:58:21It's over his head, it downs against the wall.
- 1:58:24McBride on his way to second base.
- 1:58:26Here's the throw.
- 1:58:27He is safe.
- 1:58:29Bake McBride shoots it over the head of Mahias in right field, and he's on second base.
- 1:58:38A double for Bake McBride, his third hit of the ball game.
- 1:58:42Well, Mahias lost that ball.
- 1:58:44He got a bad jump on it.
- 1:58:47By the time he picked it up, it was over his head.
- 1:58:50Bakes had a good day.
- 1:58:52He's only a triple away from hitting for the cycle.
- 1:58:57And he is certainly capable as, more capable than most of getting a triple with his speed.
- 1:59:06Well, that's the 14th hit for the Phillies.
- 1:59:09And the 26th hit in the ball game.
- 1:59:11Here's Larry Bola.
- 1:59:13Larry, the only Phil who hasn't participated in the fireworks.
- 1:59:16Larry is 0-4.
- 1:59:23Bill Atkinson, the third Montreal pitcher.
- 1:59:27They've all been right-handers.
- 1:59:28Ground ball foul wide of first base.
- 1:59:31Strike one to Bola.
- 1:59:33Jackie Brown started, but he didn't make it through the second inning.
- 1:59:37Don Stanhouse relieved him and worked three and two third innings.
- 1:59:41And now the Phillies looking at right-hander Bill Atkinson for the second inning in a row and the second day in a row.
- 1:59:46He was in one of last night's games.
- 1:59:48Billy Demars calls Larry Bola over for a brief chat.
- 1:59:53Larry might have missed the sign. I don't know. He might have had him running.
- 1:59:56He was trying to pull the ball, trying to move him back over to third.
- 2:00:08One strike to count on Bola.
- 2:00:13McBride at second base.
- 2:00:14Phillies have failed to score in only two innings today.
- 2:00:17Here's the pitch to Larry's swing and a foul back.
- 2:00:200-2 to Bola.
- 2:00:35Bill Atkinson has the sign from Gary Carter.
- 2:00:38Here's his pitch to Larry. It's outside.
- 2:00:41One ball and two strikes.
- 2:00:44Remember to join us tomorrow afternoon at 2.30 from Chicago.
- 2:00:47Phillies against the Cubs.
- 2:00:49It'll be left-hander Steve Carleton pitching against Steve Ranko.
- 2:00:55Bola takes a pitch outside, 2-2.
- 2:00:59Carleton had a lead in a game that was rained out earlier this year.
- 2:01:03Had Wrigley field a game in which Tim McCarver hit a home run, and it went 4-1.5.
- 2:01:07The Cubs did not get their advance in the fifth, and so Carleton would actually be a 17-game winner right now if that one counted.
- 2:01:15Here's Larry Bola and a one-hopper through on the right side. It goes into center field.
- 2:01:19A base hit.
- 2:01:20Fake McBride will come on in to score. Bola tries for two. He's safe.
- 2:01:25Phillies laid the ball, game 9-4.
- 2:01:29Well, the X's got tangled up a little bit there in the outfield.
- 2:01:33Dawson and Mejias made some contact, and by the time they got separated, Bola took the extra base.
- 2:01:41So Larry has his first hit of the day, and all of the Phillies who started this ballgame had hits.
- 2:01:50RBI number 35 for Bola, and the Phillies again lead it by five.
- 2:01:58Here's Mike Schmidt. Mike is two for four.
- 2:02:08Mike has scored two runs, single twice also struck out.
- 2:02:14Pitch to Mike is high, ball one.
- 2:02:19Phillies with 15 hits. The X-Bow's have a dozen.
- 2:02:24The only other game this afternoon at Candlestick, Houston leading the Giants 7-5 in the eighth inning.
- 2:02:30Here's a pitch inside. Schmidt has to duck under a 2-0 to count.
- 2:02:40Still nobody out of the inning. McBride started with a double. He scored as Larry Bola got a ground ball double.
- 2:02:49Here's a called strike to Schmidt, two and one to count.
- 2:02:53There have been four errors in this ballgame, three by Montreal.
- 2:02:59The Phillies win this game today. They will even their series with the X-Bow's on the season four wins aside.
- 2:03:06Called strike on the outside corner of the Schmidt, count level two and two.
- 2:03:18Two balls and two strikes to Mike Schmidt.
- 2:03:25Schmidt takes high, ball three and the count goes full.
- 2:03:30Greg Lozinski on deck.
- 2:03:33And the Phillies leading this ballgame nine to four.
- 2:03:41Atkinson at the belt. Here's his next pitch to Mike. It is drilled to right field.
- 2:03:45Mejias is there and he catches it. Tagging at second base is Boa. He will advance to third base.
- 2:03:51That ball was really hit hard by Schmidt, but Mejias was playing it in the right spot for the out.
- 2:03:57Let's pause here for station identification. This is the Phillies baseball network.
- 2:04:02This is KYW News Radio, 1060 Philadelphia.
- 2:04:06The weather is partly cloudy skies and warm in the U.S. tonight for the low temperature, about 72 degrees.
- 2:04:15The hand for Greg Lozinski as he stands in at the plate. That's the first out of the inning.
- 2:04:20Boa at third base and here's the ball, two for three with a walk.
- 2:04:26Pitch to Greg. Change up over for a strike.
- 2:04:29Lozinski has an RBI today. His 91st of the season. Tommy Hutton is on deck.
- 2:04:37It'll be his first at bat of the ballgame.
- 2:04:41Greg takes outside. One ball and one strike.
- 2:04:46Phillies trying to win their eighth straight. It would tie their season's longest winning streak.
- 2:04:53Here's the one-one. A hard hit ball to right field, but he is heading toward the line on the run.
- 2:04:58He gloves that ball, tagging at third base is Boa. Here's the throw to the plate.
- 2:05:02Larry scores. Phillies lead the ball, game ten to four.
- 2:05:11RBI number 92 for Lozinski. Phillies have a six-run lead for the first time.
- 2:05:22Two outs. Here's Tommy Hutton. Base is now empty.
- 2:05:26Phillies scored six runs off Brown, one off Stanhouse, and now three off Atkinson.
- 2:05:35Pitch to the left-handed batter. Over for a strike, a breaking ball.
- 2:05:40Tommy is batting 229. One home run, nine runs batted in.
- 2:05:48Tommy swings and fouls one over top of Phillies' dugout.
- 2:05:53Atkinson gets the jump on Tommy Hutton. No balls and two strikes.
- 2:05:59Hutton came in the game defensively in the seventh inning, playing for J. John Stone.
- 2:06:10Only in the fourth and the fifth innings did the Phillies fail to score today.
- 2:06:17Tommy Hutton swings and fouls tips it. Carter hangs on. Tommy is a strikeout victim,
- 2:06:22and the inning is over. But the Phillies get two runs in the seventh.
- 2:06:26They do it on two hits and nobody left on base.
- 2:06:29Bruce Seven, the Phillies lead ten to four.
- 2:06:325-5-0 Cherry Hill, New Jersey, 0-8-0-0-3.
- 2:06:36This game to the eighth inning, and here's Harry Callis.
- 2:06:39All right, thanks, Andy. Larry Parrish leading off a fly ball.
