- 0:24Speaker 1: We're back to a football week. To a game week.
- 0:28Speaker 1: And not just any game week. Red River Rivalry. You
- 0:34Speaker 1: like that? See, that's why I always said, when they
- 0:37Speaker 1: went to rivalry, you could wind up Elmer Fudding it
- 0:41Speaker 1: if you went with a rivalry. You could do it
- 0:43Speaker 1: instead of just Red River Rivalry. So, we try to
- 0:47Speaker 1: get used to it. I know a lot of folks
- 0:49Speaker 1: don't want to stick with Red River Shootout. Or as
- 0:52Speaker 1: I like to say, one of my favorite... monikers on
- 0:55Speaker 1: back of the Davis to call it the State Fair
- 0:57Speaker 1: Street Fight because it does happen during the State Fair
- 0:59Speaker 1: of Texas. But however you describe it, it is the
- 1:02Speaker 1: week for Texas OU. Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to the
- 1:05Speaker 1: program here on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone
- 1:09Speaker 1: where you can always listen to us for free on
- 1:11Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:13Speaker 2: My name is Craig Way.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us on a Longhorns Monday.
- 1:18Speaker 1: On our Longhorns Monday presentation, it starts It really starts
- 1:25Speaker 1: with the morning kickoff with Mike Hardball-Harge and Mark Henry,
- 1:29Speaker 1: 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. weekdays, Monday through Friday here
- 1:34Speaker 1: on 13 Under the Zone. It starts with that. Then
- 1:40Speaker 1: from the UT campus live, the press conference featuring Longhorns
- 1:44Speaker 1: head coach Steve Sarkisian.
- 1:46Speaker 2: So we bring that to you.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Live at 1130 in the morning on Mondays. Then we
- 1:54Speaker 1: reconvene back here during the afternoon and kind of revisit
- 1:59Speaker 1: a lot of what Sark had to say. And usually
- 2:03Speaker 1: it's recapping the Longhorn game of the prior weekend. However,
- 2:05Speaker 1: of course, with this being an open day, a bye
- 2:08Speaker 1: week on the schedule, there was no game on Saturday.
- 2:12Speaker 1: So now it's all about just getting ready for the
- 2:16Speaker 1: Red River rivalry matchup with the Oklahoma Sooners. And that's
- 2:20Speaker 1: Saturday afternoon. 1.30 network airtime. Our coverage will actually begin
- 2:25Speaker 1: at 10.30 Saturday morning with the third and Longhorn podcast preview.
- 2:29Speaker 1: That comes your way at 10.30. And then it'll be
- 2:33Speaker 1: Longhorn's game day from the fairgrounds at the State Fair
- 2:37Speaker 1: of Texas with Mike Hardball Harge and Mark Henry and
- 2:43Speaker 1: Cameron Parker. They'll be doing that. Jake Herman will be
- 2:47Speaker 1: back here quarterbacking things. And That's at 1130. The network
- 2:54Speaker 1: pregame is 130. We're told the kickoff is going to
- 2:57Speaker 1: be about 250 is what we're hearing. It'll be right
- 3:00Speaker 1: around 250. So that's just to give you the timeline.
- 3:03Speaker 1: But there's other things to get to as well. Starting
- 3:05Speaker 1: off with the fact that a producer is back in
- 3:07Speaker 1: the house, fresh from this big.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Swinging weekend in Music City, USA.
- 3:15Speaker 1: So pray tell. Jake Herman, how did that go? I mean,
- 3:20Speaker 1: how many dudes were involved in this dudes on dudes
- 3:23Speaker 1: weekend you guys had?
- 3:25Speaker 3: No Gronk, no Julian Edelman. They would have been welcome additions.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Although there were a lot more baseball fans, baseball and
- 3:32Speaker 3: hockey jerseys that I saw than football jerseys down there
- 3:34Speaker 3: on Broadway. There were 18 of us.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Wow.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Two different houses with guys sharing rooms and just cousins
- 3:42Speaker 3: and friends and family friends that are like cousins getting
- 3:46Speaker 3: together to celebrate our bachelor, my cousin in this case.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Okay, good. So what kinds of stuff did you guys do?
- 3:54Speaker 3: Let's see. Well, we got a good game of pickup
- 3:57Speaker 3: basketball going. I'll tell you that.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Okay.
- 4:00Speaker 3: That was kind of a unique twist on things. I
- 4:02Speaker 3: don't think a lot of bachelor parties are running five
- 4:04Speaker 3: on five for two hours.
- 4:05Speaker 1: You're right.
- 4:06Speaker 2: I will tell you this. The first time I got
- 4:09Speaker 2: married back.
- 4:12Speaker 1: In 1986, we did the bachelor party at a couple
- 4:18Speaker 1: of my former roommates who were living in, renting a
- 4:22Speaker 1: house in Denton. And by then I'd moved out of Denton.
- 4:25Speaker 1: I'd finished school at North Texas and I was already
- 4:28Speaker 1: living back in the Metroplex. But we went up, we
- 4:30Speaker 1: did it in Denton. And we had, it was kind
- 4:34Speaker 1: of an overnight thing. And we had, the bachelor party
- 4:37Speaker 1: consisted of a lot of hamburgers and beer, and there
- 4:42Speaker 1: were 12 of us, and we had a three-on-three basketball tournament,
- 4:45Speaker 1: four three-on-three teams. So people looked at us and said,
- 4:48Speaker 1: look at you, bunch of slappies. You just eat goofballs,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and you're not going out tearing yourselves up and tearing
- 4:55Speaker 1: up the town. And the answer was no, we didn't
- 4:56Speaker 1: do that. We just kind of did it and had
- 4:59Speaker 1: a good time. So it sounds like yours was along
- 5:01Speaker 1: a similar line.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Yeah, we did. There were sports. There were bars. There
- 5:06Speaker 3: were sports bars. There was a whiskey tasting. That was fun.
- 5:10Speaker 2: How'd that go? It was great.
- 5:12Speaker 3: I learned how to properly drink whiskey for the first time.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Okay.
- 5:17Speaker 3: I didn't know you were supposed to let the first
- 5:19Speaker 3: sip sit for a second.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:21Speaker 1: You kind of experience it a little bit, you know,
- 5:24Speaker 1: and let it waft into you and in your olfactory
- 5:29Speaker 1: senses as well as your taste there.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Was a lot of live music a lot of rock
- 5:32Speaker 3: a lot of country okay by night two it felt
- 5:35Speaker 3: like maybe the same 12 or 15 songs but you
- 5:37Speaker 3: know you dance you get after it and okay it
- 5:40Speaker 3: was a it was a good time.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Okay all right now you said it was a whole
- 5:43Speaker 1: bunch of dudes did you have some women there since
- 5:44Speaker 1: there was dancing or was it just dancing among dudes.
- 5:47Speaker 3: The uh it's not a lot of single dudes in
- 5:50Speaker 3: the crowd, but there, you know, there, you know, bachelorette
- 5:53Speaker 3: parties are everywhere you look in Nashville.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Well, that's true.
- 5:55Speaker 3: There were lots of big groups kind of intermingling and
- 5:58Speaker 3: then moving on to the next floor of the next,
- 6:00Speaker 3: of the next bar named after the next country musician.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Okay.
- 6:06Speaker 2: All right. So he had a good time.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Uh, and, uh, and this was after what it was
- 6:11Speaker 1: kind of, It was kind of up in the air
- 6:14Speaker 1: as to what night you would get there and if
- 6:16Speaker 1: you'd get there on time and all that kind of
- 6:17Speaker 1: stuff because the rainy, stormy weather around here kind of
- 6:20Speaker 1: pushed that back.
- 6:21Speaker 2: But you were able to get in in time and
- 6:23Speaker 2: then had a good weekend then.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Yeah. It all worked out with the flights and the rain,
- 6:28Speaker 3: which made it difficult to get out of Austin.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I was told I didn't miss that much, so we'll
- 6:34Speaker 3: take it.
- 6:34Speaker 4: Okay.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Being a little late there on night number one, but
- 6:37Speaker 3: we'll take it.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Okay, good.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I'm glad it all worked out. I'm glad you had
- 6:41Speaker 2: a good time.
- 6:42Speaker 3: And I escaped the basketball without any major bodily injuries.
- 6:45Speaker 2: That's good, too. Always a plus.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Because there was a scare.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Somebody got hurt?
- 6:51Speaker 3: Somebody came down on top of me after a rebound.
- 6:54Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 6:54Speaker 3: A little twinge in the knee, Craig. It was scary.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I'm fine. Okay, good. That's good to hear.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Uh when'd you get back into town uh yesterday morning
- 7:03Speaker 3: okay got up bright and early.
- 7:06Speaker 2: You didn't get up as early as your football team did.
- 7:08Speaker 3: No no but but they they were kind of sleepy
- 7:11Speaker 3: in the first half too.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Yeah yeah and then of course the emergency quarterback he
- 7:15Speaker 1: wasn't on my active roster the emergency quarterback i had
- 7:18Speaker 1: was marcus mariotta and forget about that now because what
- 7:22Speaker 1: he's gonna be out a few weeks now right.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I think they're getting an MRI today on that.
- 7:27Speaker 3: And Kaliak Manas, the Rutgers rookie, came on and wasn't
- 7:33Speaker 3: afraid to air it out. It felt like David Blau
- 7:35Speaker 3: trusted him to throw the ball down the field. I'm
- 7:37Speaker 3: not sure he trusted the officials to call a pass interference.
- 7:41Speaker 3: There were three or four that got missed in that game,
- 7:43Speaker 3: but that's the least of Washington's issues right now.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Okay, so here's what we have for you.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Obviously, we're going to hear from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian,
- 7:54Speaker 1: from the news conference. We'll hear Sark's thoughts on things
- 7:57Speaker 1: in this Texas OU week.
- 7:58Speaker 2: We'll do that.
- 8:00Speaker 1: There was also a pretty important pro football game played
- 8:02Speaker 1: in this state over the weekend yesterday.
- 8:06Speaker 2: The Dallas Cowboys, the Houston Texans.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Very entertaining game, especially if you didn't have a rooting interest.
- 8:15Speaker 1: But even if you did, it was an entertaining game
- 8:18Speaker 1: down into the final minutes. And somehow the Cowboys were
- 8:23Speaker 1: able to pull out a 34-30 win over Houston. So
- 8:28Speaker 1: the Cowboys are two and two. In fact, there's an
- 8:30Speaker 1: article on ESPN.com that poses the question, did the Rams, Cowboys,
- 8:36Speaker 1: and Patriots just save their seasons? And with the Rams
- 8:41Speaker 1: very unlikely come back in the final five minutes from
- 8:43Speaker 1: down 10 points to beat the Eagles in Philadelphia, uh,
- 8:47Speaker 1: I actually texted somebody and said, uh, my brother, one
- 8:50Speaker 1: of my brothers and said, that was a season saving
- 8:53Speaker 1: win for LA. I do think it was, uh, and,
- 8:56Speaker 1: and very well could have been for the Cowboys and
- 9:00Speaker 1: the Patriots as well. So we'll, we'll get.
- 9:02Speaker 2: More into that.
- 9:03Speaker 1: We'll hear, uh, the, the principles involved in that Dallas
- 9:07Speaker 1: come from behind when over Houston, um, And we'll, you know,
- 9:15Speaker 1: on both sides, both the plus side and the minus
- 9:17Speaker 1: side for that. We do have Inconceivable this hour, which
- 9:21Speaker 1: features a fast food, junk food update, but a couple
- 9:23Speaker 1: other issues and topics as well.
- 9:26Speaker 2: So we'll get to that.
- 9:28Speaker 1: As always, we're happy to welcome your questions, your thoughts,
- 9:30Speaker 1: and your comments on the text line. All you have
- 9:33Speaker 1: to do is text the word Texas, followed by your
- 9:35Speaker 1: question or comment to 81533. So you text the word Texas.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Make sure you do that first. It can be with
- 9:44Speaker 1: a capital T or all lowercase or all caps, doesn't matter.
- 9:47Speaker 1: But you got to text the word Texas and then
- 9:50Speaker 1: your question or comment to 81530 and standard messaging and
- 9:55Speaker 1: data rates may apply. We also offer the talkback microphone
- 9:59Speaker 1: for you if you want your voice actually heard on
- 10:01Speaker 1: the air. All you have to do, make sure you
- 10:04Speaker 1: have the iHeartRadio app downloaded on your smartphone. So once
- 10:11Speaker 1: you have that downloaded on your phone, be it iPhone
- 10:15Speaker 1: or Android, Then what you'll do is search AM 1300
- 10:18Speaker 1: The Zone. It'll pop right up. And then when it does,
- 10:21Speaker 1: all you have to do is you'll see two buttons
- 10:25Speaker 1: up there. One's a little white triangular button. That's just
- 10:27Speaker 1: to listen to what's going on the air. But there's
- 10:29Speaker 1: a little red button with a white microphone in it.
- 10:32Speaker 1: You press that button that opens up the talkback microphone,
- 10:36Speaker 1: sends us a direct message into our system. So you
- 10:39Speaker 1: can leave us a voice message up to 30 seconds. saying, yeah,
- 10:43Speaker 1: I thought the Cowboys got lucky yesterday. Oh, the Texans,
- 10:45Speaker 1: there's no return from 0-4. Hey, how did the Longhorns
- 10:50Speaker 1: by week go? What did they work on? You know,
- 10:52Speaker 1: stuff like that. Anything within reason and certainly clean. It
- 10:56Speaker 1: could also be about Major League Baseball because we've already
- 11:00Speaker 1: had some eye-opening, eyebrow-raising results in both the American League.
- 11:05Speaker 2: And the National League.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Game two of the division series in the National League
- 11:09Speaker 1: takes place today and tonight, the White Sox and Guardians
- 11:15Speaker 1: with Chicago, the six seed holding a one game to
- 11:19Speaker 1: none lead. They got a, uh, a, a victory on
- 11:23Speaker 1: Saturday and also on Saturday, Saturday night, the Rays beat
- 11:29Speaker 1: the Yankees and they won one, nothing. And it was
- 11:34Speaker 1: enough to get it done. Um, And so they're up
- 11:38Speaker 1: one game to none on New York. So game two
- 11:40Speaker 1: of those two series.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Today at night.
- 11:41Speaker 1: In the National League, they've already played two games. The Brewers,
- 11:45Speaker 1: the one seed, with a marvelous come-from-behind win over the
- 11:50Speaker 1: Padres yesterday, scoring two in the bottom of the ninth
- 11:53Speaker 1: off of arguably the best closer in the game, Mason Miller.
- 11:57Speaker 2: He walked three batters in the inning.
- 11:59Speaker 1: And Jackson Turio got the hit that brought home the
- 12:02Speaker 1: tying and winning run.
- 12:04Speaker 2: So they're up two games to none.
- 12:05Speaker 1: The Brewers are one win away from advancing to the
- 12:07Speaker 1: NLCS and having home field advantage for that because they
- 12:10Speaker 1: had the best record in all of baseball with 103 wins.
- 12:13Speaker 2: The other one, 1-1 and headed to Atlanta.
- 12:15Speaker 1: The Braves strung together a bullpen game and held the
- 12:20Speaker 1: Dodgers at bay enough to beat Los Angeles. Blake Snell
- 12:25Speaker 1: was not at his best last night and he was
- 12:28Speaker 1: out after four innings. And so the Braves won. So
- 12:32Speaker 1: that series is one apiece. shifting back to Atlanta it's
- 12:36Speaker 1: a travel day in the National League for both of
- 12:37Speaker 1: those series and so they're shifting back to Atlanta and
- 12:41Speaker 1: the Braves saved up Chris Sale got him fully rested
- 12:45Speaker 1: he'll be ready to go their ace tomorrow the Dodgers
- 12:47Speaker 1: will counter with Yoshinobu Yamamoto uh it could be a
- 12:51Speaker 1: it could be a marvelous game it could be a
- 12:54Speaker 1: a redo of the game they had one-on-one in August
- 12:57Speaker 1: it was an incredible one-nothing game the Braves got a
- 13:00Speaker 1: home run in the first inning and that was it
- 13:02Speaker 1: and they won that. So the narrative may have flipped
- 13:05Speaker 1: a little bit in that National League thing now with
- 13:07Speaker 1: the Braves having stolen a game in Los Angeles. So
- 13:12Speaker 1: game three of that series is going to be tomorrow.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Game three of Padres and Brewers is tomorrow. But the
- 13:19Speaker 1: two American League series are tonight. We can certainly address
- 13:22Speaker 1: any questions or thoughts you might have on that as well.
- 13:25Speaker 1: All right, but coming up, we're going to hear from
- 13:27Speaker 1: Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian. Again, we'll hear from the
- 13:31Speaker 1: principals involved in that Cowboys-Texans matchup as well. Glad to
- 13:35Speaker 1: have you with us on a Longhorns Monday here on
- 13:37Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and where you're
- 13:40Speaker 1: always listening to us for free on the iHeartRadio app.
- 13:45Speaker 2: I'm sure Danico Ryan feels that way.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Monday, Monday, sometimes it just works out that way. It
- 13:52Speaker 1: turns out that way. It was a tough ending there.
- 13:55Speaker 1: More on the Cowboys and Texans in a few minutes.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Let's get to the Longhorns on a Longhorn Monday. And
- 14:00Speaker 1: at the press conference heard live earlier here today on
- 14:04Speaker 1: 13 Under the Zone, we heard from the head coach,
- 14:06Speaker 1: Steve Sarkisian, starting with Sark's opening comments about this week
- 14:10Speaker 1: and the matchup with the Oklahoma Sooners.
- 14:14Speaker 6: 122nd meeting, you know, pretty amazing when you think about
- 14:16Speaker 6: it in that light that Texas, I know you have
- 14:21Speaker 6: played in the Red River rivalry. And so I know
- 14:24Speaker 6: I say this every year, but I mean it, you know,
- 14:26Speaker 6: humbled to be part of this game. You know, it's
- 14:28Speaker 6: an honor. It's the best environment, in my opinion, in
- 14:33Speaker 6: college football. I've been part of a lot of great games,
- 14:35Speaker 6: a lot of great rivalries. And this one is as
- 14:39Speaker 6: special as they come. And, you know, this is always
- 14:43Speaker 6: a unique game because you can take record stats and
- 14:46Speaker 6: all those things and throw them out the window and
- 14:49Speaker 6: and you've got to play the game, and you've got
- 14:51Speaker 6: to play the game the right way. It's interesting when
- 14:53Speaker 6: you look at just even since I've been here, the
- 14:56Speaker 6: team that runs the ball, the team that converts third downs,
- 15:00Speaker 6: the team that wins a turnover battle, and the team
- 15:02Speaker 6: that can pressure the quarterback generally comes out on top.
- 15:05Speaker 6: And so you get back to the core fundamentals of
- 15:07Speaker 6: what the game of football is all about. As much
- 15:10Speaker 6: as we want to talk about the emotions of the game,
- 15:13Speaker 6: as much as we want to talk about trick plays
- 15:16Speaker 6: or the craziness that can happen in this game, it
- 15:19Speaker 6: generally comes back to the things that are important to football, right?
- 15:23Speaker 6: Who can run the ball? Who can convert third downs
- 15:26Speaker 6: and extend drives? Who can create turnovers? Who can take
- 15:29Speaker 6: care of the ball? And then ultimately, who can pressure
- 15:32Speaker 6: the other team's quarterback to affect him? So This is
- 15:36Speaker 6: a heck of a challenge. Coach Venables, you know, I
- 15:39Speaker 6: know he's probably sitting there thinking he wishes the record
- 15:41Speaker 6: was a little bit different. But man, his teams play
- 15:43Speaker 6: hard and this team's no different. They play hard. They're
- 15:46Speaker 6: an excellent defensive football team. They've got draft picks all
- 15:50Speaker 6: over on the defense. Offensively, they've got playmaking ability similar
- 15:54Speaker 6: to us. They're trying to find their way to find
- 15:57Speaker 6: that level of consistency. But one thing I can be
- 16:01Speaker 6: assured of, we're going to get their best shot. And
- 16:02Speaker 6: so I think it's important for us that we focus
- 16:06Speaker 6: on what we need to do so that we can
- 16:08Speaker 6: play our best football. And that obviously started some last week.
- 16:12Speaker 6: But more importantly, that started this morning. I thought the
- 16:15Speaker 6: guys had great energy coming off the bye. really intentional
- 16:19Speaker 6: in practice. A lot of, they're spirited, which is a
- 16:23Speaker 6: good sign to start the week as we start navigating
- 16:26Speaker 6: our way towards Saturday.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Okay.
- 16:27Speaker 4: All right.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Next, the questions came and the first one for Sark was,
- 16:32Speaker 1: you know, through four weeks and now the open date
- 16:35Speaker 1: week having passed, the bye week has come and gone goodbye.
- 16:39Speaker 1: The question is, what does he feel in retrospect to
- 16:42Speaker 1: the first third of the season that they do really
- 16:46Speaker 1: well and have done well?
- 16:48Speaker 6: Well, I think what we've done well is we've won, right?
- 16:52Speaker 6: I'd hate to be here and sit here and say, hey,
- 16:55Speaker 6: we've got all these great stats and punt returns for touchdown,
- 16:58Speaker 6: all these things and be, you know, three and one
- 17:00Speaker 6: or two. So that's the first part, you know, we've
- 17:03Speaker 6: won the games. You know, I feel like that, you know,
- 17:07Speaker 6: we've had moments where we needed to be at our
- 17:09Speaker 6: best and we've responded at our best, you know, and
- 17:13Speaker 6: it's easy to point to the fourth quarter of Ohio State.
- 17:16Speaker 6: Or it's easy to point to the drive in the
- 17:20Speaker 6: fourth quarter against Tennessee to make it a two score game.
- 17:24Speaker 6: Or the stops we've had to get defensively in critical moments.
- 17:28Speaker 6: And so I think being at our best when our
- 17:30Speaker 6: best has been required is a great trait that we've shown.
- 17:35Speaker 6: But to me, I see flashes of who we want
- 17:39Speaker 6: to be. But my biggest critique of it all is
- 17:43Speaker 6: the consistency of it all, right? And we have got
- 17:46Speaker 6: to be a more consistent football team in general in
- 17:50Speaker 6: all three phases. And I think we can be. There's
- 17:52Speaker 6: room for improvement even on the defensive side of the ball.
- 17:55Speaker 6: And so that's what we're pushing for. That's what we're
- 17:56Speaker 6: striving for in all three phases.
- 17:58Speaker 2: All right.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Next, our friend Cedric Golden from the Austin American Statesman
- 18:02Speaker 1: asked Sark about In case you didn't hear, Duke Carlisle,
- 18:05Speaker 1: a former great Texas defensive back and quarterback. Quarterback in
- 18:09Speaker 1: the 1963 National Championship team. The first National Championship won
- 18:14Speaker 1: by the University of Texas in 1963 under Coach Darrell Royal.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Duke Carlisle had the game-saving interception against Baylor in a
- 18:23Speaker 1: 7-0 win late in the season. And then they had
- 18:27Speaker 1: the other crazy game against Texas A & M when
- 18:29Speaker 1: it looked like the Aggies had intercepted had, in fact,
- 18:34Speaker 1: intercepted the pass to seal the game, but the man
- 18:37Speaker 1: intercepting the pass tried to then lateral it or try
- 18:40Speaker 1: to toss it to a teammate and fumble, and Longhorns
- 18:43Speaker 1: got it, and they ended up winning the game. And
- 18:46Speaker 1: then they got into the national championship game, which was
- 18:50Speaker 1: they were declared national titleists by that point.
- 18:54Speaker 2: They were number one. Navy was number two.
- 18:56Speaker 1: You had Roger Staubach, the Heisman Trophy winner, quarterback coming in.
- 19:00Speaker 1: And Texas dominated the game and won 28-6 to cement
- 19:03Speaker 1: that national championship. Duke Carlisle, one of the true leaders
- 19:07Speaker 1: of that team. And he passed away over the weekend.
- 19:10Speaker 1: And Sark was asked, what does he consider Duke Carlisle's
- 19:15Speaker 1: significance on this game, passing just before this game took place?
- 19:19Speaker 2: And did he even know Duke?
- 19:21Speaker 6: Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to meet him.
- 19:23Speaker 2: But, you know.
- 19:27Speaker 6: With this place, there's so much history, right? Of just
- 19:31Speaker 6: the great players, the great coaches, the great teams. And
- 19:34Speaker 6: then you add in the Cotton Bowl and the history
- 19:38Speaker 6: of the Cotton Bowl itself and the unbelievable wins that
- 19:41Speaker 6: took place under Coach Royal there. And then you add
- 19:44Speaker 6: in the Red River Rivalry and OU and and all
- 19:47Speaker 6: that this game entails. There's so much history. That's why
- 19:49Speaker 6: I said in the opening statement, like I'm humbled, right. To,
- 19:52Speaker 6: to be able to sit here and say, I'm the
- 19:54Speaker 6: head coach of university of Texas in the 122nd meeting
- 19:58Speaker 6: between Texas and OU. And so, um, you know, the,
- 20:01Speaker 6: the opportunity to honor those that came before us is
- 20:04Speaker 6: something that, that we never, uh, uh, we, we try
- 20:07Speaker 6: never to neglect and we try to honor those guys
- 20:10Speaker 6: because they've built what, what we're trying to sustain. And, and,
- 20:14Speaker 6: you know, this is, um, you know, I say it
- 20:17Speaker 6: all the time. I, I don't think more of myself
- 20:20Speaker 6: because I get to be the head coach. I'm, I'm humbled.
- 20:22Speaker 6: I'm honored. I get to wear the hat of being
- 20:24Speaker 6: the head coach of university of Texas. And that encompasses
- 20:27Speaker 6: a lot. Same for our players. You know, they get
- 20:29Speaker 6: to put that helmet on. They get to put that
- 20:30Speaker 6: Jersey on each Saturday, this Saturday in particular. And that's
- 20:34Speaker 6: really to honor, uh, those guys that played before us,
- 20:37Speaker 6: that we're living up to the standard that they have
- 20:40Speaker 6: set for us. And so with Duke, it's no different.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Then the next question came about injuries. Now that they're
- 20:49Speaker 1: in the conference play, the SEC student athlete availability report
- 20:54Speaker 1: is released Wednesday evening of each week. That's the only
- 20:59Speaker 1: time that a university is even required to disclose what
- 21:04Speaker 1: the injury status is of some of those players. That
- 21:07Speaker 1: does not, however, stop folks from asking Sark about it,
- 21:12Speaker 1: whether or not he wants to discuss it even prior
- 21:14Speaker 1: to release of the point. So he was asked about
- 21:18Speaker 1: could he talk about the injury update and then what
- 21:23Speaker 1: could he add with regard to the work they put
- 21:25Speaker 1: into trying to prevent and reduce the number of penalties
- 21:29Speaker 1: they've had in games.
- 21:30Speaker 6: Naturally, anytime you come out of a bye week, if
- 21:32Speaker 6: we do it right, we should be healthier than we
- 21:34Speaker 6: were going into the bye week. And so I'll leave
- 21:37Speaker 6: that at that. We'll see what it looks like Wednesday night,
- 21:40Speaker 6: but I'll start with that. I think we're healthier than
- 21:42Speaker 6: we were this time a week ago. As far as
- 21:46Speaker 6: the penalties go, some of the penalties are.
- 21:54Speaker 6: You know, there's going to be holds.
- 21:56Speaker 5: At times, right?
- 21:57Speaker 6: Sometimes that's going to happen. There's going to be hands
- 22:00Speaker 6: to the face. We see it at every game you
- 22:02Speaker 6: watch when a defensive lineman can get a hand in
- 22:05Speaker 6: the face of an offensive. I think some of that
- 22:07Speaker 6: stuff happens with football. There could be an inadvertent face mask.
- 22:11Speaker 6: Nobody's trying to grab a face mask. Some of those
- 22:14Speaker 6: things can happen. What we need to minimize is some
- 22:16Speaker 6: of the decisions that get made that lead to the penalties.
- 22:21Speaker 6: If it's a punt return and I know I'm not
- 22:25Speaker 6: in position to make a block on a guy, make
- 22:28Speaker 6: the decision to go double play and let the returner
- 22:32Speaker 6: or somebody else block him rather than push him in
- 22:35Speaker 6: the back. That's a choice and a decision that can
- 22:38Speaker 6: get made in the moment. We had a delay game
- 22:42Speaker 6: penalty at Tennessee, which we don't really get those. And
- 22:45Speaker 6: so why did that happen? We huddled, it was loud.
- 22:48Speaker 6: How do we rectify that? More crowd noise in practice,
- 22:51Speaker 6: what does that look like? But to your point, I
- 22:54Speaker 6: do think there is a level of intensity in practice.
- 22:56Speaker 6: And I think last week in the bye week, we
- 22:58Speaker 6: were very intense for two days. I mean, it was
- 23:00Speaker 6: game-like situations. And so you can see those and holdings
- 23:05Speaker 6: can occur and you got to call them and you
- 23:06Speaker 6: got to mark them off. You got to make them
- 23:08Speaker 6: feel the effect of some of those penalties or a
- 23:11Speaker 6: pass interference penalty. Again, I thought both the Mascots were bang,
- 23:14Speaker 6: bang plays. They were close. The first one really, I
- 23:19Speaker 6: would argue, but it's not my call. It's the official's call.
- 23:22Speaker 6: The second one, you know, he just grabs his arm
- 23:24Speaker 6: and it's that subtle grab that can lead to a DPI.
- 23:28Speaker 6: And so you got to put him in those intense
- 23:30Speaker 6: situations to your point. That's why Tuesday and Wednesday practices
- 23:33Speaker 6: are what they are for us so that we can
- 23:35Speaker 6: make it as game-like as possible. Our scout team guys
- 23:38Speaker 6: got to give great looks so that we feel the
- 23:41Speaker 6: stress of what it feels like in the moment to
- 23:44Speaker 6: not hit the quarterback in the head with my hand
- 23:47Speaker 6: when I'm rushing, you know, and have the discipline to
- 23:49Speaker 6: if I am reaching for the ball, where's his arm angle?
- 23:51Speaker 6: It's not here.
- 23:53Speaker 3: It's here.
- 23:53Speaker 6: And so those little things that we have to keep coaching.
- 23:56Speaker 6: And I think if we keep coaching and the players
- 23:58Speaker 6: are coachable, we can clean some of this stuff up.
- 24:01Speaker 6: And so it's been a point of emphasis. And as
- 24:03Speaker 6: I said before, generally we get what we emphasize and
- 24:06Speaker 6: we've been emphasizing the heck out of it.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Okay.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Remember that there are 43 new players in this roster.
- 24:12Speaker 1: So Sark was asked about the process of explaining what
- 24:16Speaker 1: this game is all about, the atmosphere, the excitement, the intensity,
- 24:20Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff for Texas OU. What is
- 24:23Speaker 1: the process like in explaining this to the new guys
- 24:27Speaker 1: on the roster?
- 24:27Speaker 6: We stick to our process, you know?
- 24:29Speaker 1: I mean, I.
- 24:30Speaker 6: This morning, I went through our what it takes, what
- 24:33Speaker 6: I think is going to be needed to win the game.
- 24:34Speaker 6: We talk a lot about poise and composure. We talk
- 24:37Speaker 6: about playing with emotion, not emotional. This game can get
- 24:41Speaker 6: emotional at times, and so how do we harness that?
- 24:45Speaker 6: How do we stay enamored with us? We do talk
- 24:47Speaker 6: about those things. I mean, I put a picture of
- 24:49Speaker 6: the Cotton Bowl up so they can understand where the
- 24:52Speaker 6: tunnel is and which end of the field we actually
- 24:54Speaker 6: warm up on and, and, and, you know, wrapping their
- 24:57Speaker 6: brains around, we have to go around Oklahoma to get,
- 25:00Speaker 6: so there's little things like that. But, but it's football,
- 25:04Speaker 6: you know, at the end of the day, it's football
- 25:06Speaker 6: and the game means a ton to us. The best
- 25:08Speaker 6: way we can honor the game is by practicing, preparing
- 25:11Speaker 6: really well so that we can play really well. And
- 25:14Speaker 6: I don't, waste a lot of time and energy in
- 25:18Speaker 6: the rah-rah speeches on a Monday. As we get closer, Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
- 25:24Speaker 6: that'll probably be a little bit more of the temperature. Monday,
- 25:28Speaker 6: what's the plan? How are we going to execute that plan?
- 25:30Speaker 6: And what are we going to try to do to
- 25:31Speaker 6: win the game?
- 25:32Speaker 1: All right. We'll hear more from Sark coming up each
- 25:35Speaker 1: of the next two hours. We have Inconceivable coming up
- 25:38Speaker 1: next here on a Monday on Sports Radio AM 13
- 25:40Speaker 1: Under the Zone and EIR Radio app. Here on a
- 25:46Speaker 1: Longhorns Monday on 1300 The Zone, ESPN has updated its
- 25:51Speaker 1: college football bowl projections and playoff projections as well. No
- 25:57Speaker 1: real change for Texas in the eyes of the two
- 25:59Speaker 1: guys who make these selections, Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schleybaugh.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Bonagura rates Texas a little bit lower than Schleybaugh. Bonagura
- 26:08Speaker 1: has Texas the five-seed. number five seed. So that would
- 26:13Speaker 1: mean playing a home playoff game on that first weekend,
- 26:16Speaker 1: having to play the 12 seed Boise State. Now, Schlebaugh
- 26:21Speaker 1: also has Boise as the 12, but he's got Alabama
- 26:23Speaker 1: as the five. Both have Ohio State as the six.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Bonagura has a match done with UCLA. Schlebaugh has the
- 26:31Speaker 1: Buckeyes against LSU. Bonagura has in the 10-7 matchup, seven
- 26:36Speaker 1: seed Alabama, 10 seed LSU. Schlebaugh has it. 7-seed Indiana,
- 26:40Speaker 1: 10-seed Ole Miss. And then in the 8-9 matchup, both
- 26:44Speaker 1: have BYU as the 8. Bonagura has Utah as the 9.
- 26:48Speaker 1: Beehive boot action in the first round. And Schleybaugh has
- 26:52Speaker 1: it BYU-Oregon. Then in the quarterfinals, Bonagura has Texas advancing
- 26:57Speaker 1: with a win over Boise to play the 4-seed Miami.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Schleybaugh has the 4-seed Notre Dame against the 5-seed Alabama advancing.
- 27:05Speaker 1: The other ones both have 6-seed Ohio State advancing. Bonagura,
- 27:09Speaker 1: they have him playing the three-seed Indiana in a rematch
- 27:13Speaker 1: of the game that's coming up in a couple of weeks.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Schleybaugh has him playing Miami the three-seed. And the quarterfinals,
- 27:19Speaker 1: they have seven-seed Alabama. Bonagura gets two-seed Notre Dame. Schleybaugh
- 27:24Speaker 1: has seven-seed Indiana against two-seed Georgia. And in the other quarterfinals,
- 27:29Speaker 1: they have eight-seed BYU against Georgia.
- 27:30Speaker 2: It is Bonagura. Schleybaugh has Texas as the number one
- 27:33Speaker 2: overall seed. He has him playing Oregon.
- 27:36Speaker 1: In the semifinals... Bonagura has the three-seed Indiana beating Ohio
- 27:42Speaker 1: State and playing the two-seed Notre Dame. Schleybaugh has the
- 27:45Speaker 1: six-seed Ohio State playing the two-seed Georgia. The other semifinal,
- 27:49Speaker 1: Bonagura says the four-seed Miami will knock out five-seed Texas
- 27:53Speaker 1: in the quarters and play top-seed Georgia. Schleybaugh says Texas
- 27:58Speaker 1: has the one-seed, will play the five-seed Alabama. And in
- 28:02Speaker 1: the national championship, both have Georgia in it. On Agoura's Georgia,
- 28:07Speaker 1: the one seed will knock off the four seed Miami
- 28:10Speaker 1: in the Sugar Bowl and then play for the national
- 28:12Speaker 1: championship in Vegas against two seed Notre Dame. Schlebaugh has Alabama,
- 28:18Speaker 1: the five seed, knocking off the one seed Texas in
- 28:20Speaker 1: the semifinals in the Sugar Bowl and matching up with
- 28:23Speaker 1: a two seed Georgia.
- 28:26Speaker 3: We learn a lot more this week, don't we, Craig?
- 28:28Speaker 1: Yep. Georgia-Alabama this week. ESPN College game day is there.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Of course, the Longhorns have the Oklahoma Sooners. Coming up,
- 28:34Speaker 1: more from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian. But also, we'll
- 28:38Speaker 1: hear from the Cowboys coming off a heart-stopping, come-from-behind win
- 28:44Speaker 1: over the Houston Texans. Heart-stopping if you're a Cowboys fan.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Heart-breaking if you're a Texans fan. We'll hear from both
- 28:51Speaker 1: head coaches.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Stay with us.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Hour number two of three coming up right here on
- 28:56Speaker 1: 1300 The Zone.
- 29:10Speaker 3: 43 seconds.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Dallas down three.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Second down at the Houston 12.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Prescott back.
- 29:17Speaker 8: Throwing.
- 29:17Speaker 5: End zone.
- 29:18Speaker 3: Lamb.
- 29:19Speaker 5: Lamb.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Lamb to the post. Seedy land. Unbelievable. 12-yard touchdown.
- 29:35Speaker 7: Dallas has regained the lead.
- 29:38Speaker 6: Stroud is back.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Wait.
- 29:40Speaker 4: He's standing.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Nobody's rushing. He's heaving it now. It is the Hail
- 29:44Speaker 3: Mary shot.
- 29:45Speaker 7: Into the end zone it goes. The ball is knocked down.
- 29:50Speaker 6: Incomplete. The clock expires.
- 29:52Speaker 7: The Cowboys have won the game.
- 29:56Speaker 3: The Cowboys have come back.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Happy anniversary, Houston. I think Brad Chan was referring to
- 30:10Speaker 1: the anniversary of the Houston Texans' first season and their
- 30:12Speaker 1: win over the Cowboys, I believe.
- 30:14Speaker 2: I saw something about that.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Their inaugural game in that stadium.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. The Cowboys spoiled the party for them yesterday.
- 30:21Speaker 1: That come from behind 34. win over the texans there
- 30:26Speaker 1: at reliance stadium as we get our number two of
- 30:29Speaker 1: the program underway here on 1300 the zone dak prescott
- 30:33Speaker 1: efficient when he had to be and came up with
- 30:35Speaker 1: some big plays and more important to dak a big
- 30:37Speaker 1: win for the team i.
- 30:39Speaker 9: Mean just see these been great um obviously today uh
- 30:42Speaker 9: but just throughout the whole season just his demeanor his
- 30:45Speaker 9: mindset his mentality um communication throughout each and every play
- 30:49Speaker 9: and i think today is just a great example of
- 30:51Speaker 9: Of that, we both had a little frustration on a
- 30:53Speaker 9: play that maybe we didn't hear right. He thought that
- 30:56Speaker 9: he won, which he did, but it was indifferent. And
- 30:58Speaker 9: then right after that, we communicated about it, and coaches
- 31:02Speaker 9: did a great job of moving him around, finding great
- 31:05Speaker 9: formation splits to put him in that allowed him to
- 31:07Speaker 9: take advantage. And honestly, I didn't even realize he had
- 31:10Speaker 9: 17 catches until Shadi said it at the end of
- 31:12Speaker 9: the game. And so that's just credit to him being
- 31:15Speaker 9: the guy and the player that he is. Those of
- 31:18Speaker 9: us who have C.D. Lamb on their fantasy football rosters
- 31:20Speaker 9: know he had 17 catches. What a huge day he
- 31:23Speaker 9: had for that.
- 31:24Speaker 1: And Brian Schottenheimer in the postgame press conference asked about C.D.
- 31:28Speaker 2: 's performance. C.D.
- 31:30Speaker 8: Played the way he always plays. Dynamite, you know. He's
- 31:35Speaker 8: been playing that way all year. The ball found him
- 31:37Speaker 8: a lot tonight. That's what happens. The beauty of our
- 31:40Speaker 8: offense is if You want to try to take away
- 31:42Speaker 8: George or try to take away CD? We got another
- 31:45Speaker 8: guy over there that's pretty good. And when George got
- 31:48Speaker 8: his op, what's George do?
- 31:51Speaker 5: Makes plays. So beauty of the offense.
- 31:53Speaker 8: Thought Dak was incredibly gritty today.
- 31:56Speaker 5: Hung in there, took some shots against a really, really
- 31:58Speaker 5: good defense.
- 31:59Speaker 8: And we just kept making plays, kept stacking plays, and
- 32:03Speaker 8: we always believed.
- 32:04Speaker 5: We really did. We always believed we'd find a way
- 32:05Speaker 5: to win this game.
- 32:06Speaker 4: All right.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Was there a little extra motivation for Lamb with this
- 32:09Speaker 1: game in his hometown area in Houston?
- 32:12Speaker 8: I knew this was a big one for him. I
- 32:14Speaker 8: know how much Houston means to him and his family
- 32:17Speaker 8: mean to him. And he put on a show tonight
- 32:20Speaker 8: against a really, really good defense with two really excellent corners.
- 32:25Speaker 5: And, you know, he just.
- 32:28Speaker 8: He just kept finding ways to get open, making plays,
- 32:30Speaker 8: huge conversions, some third downs. I love the young man.
- 32:36Speaker 8: He's a special young man. He's worked so hard and, uh,
- 32:38Speaker 8: deserves everything that comes his way.
- 32:40Speaker 5: All right.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Um, so the question was, did shot ever plan for
- 32:45Speaker 1: CD to have 17 catches in the game?
- 32:48Speaker 5: No, no, never does.
- 32:49Speaker 8: I mean, those guys always sit at the top of
- 32:51Speaker 8: our two progressions, as you can imagine. Um, you know,
- 32:54Speaker 8: we actually had George on a double move. It's going
- 32:56Speaker 8: to be a 60 yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. And, uh,
- 32:58Speaker 8: we just got a little leaky on the protection. Dak
- 33:00Speaker 8: got hit by, uh, an incredible player, Willie Anderson. Um,
- 33:04Speaker 8: But George is going to score a touchdown there. And
- 33:07Speaker 8: what I love about George, man, there's no one more
- 33:08Speaker 8: excited in that locker room right now than George Pickens.
- 33:11Speaker 4: No one.
- 33:11Speaker 5: Not a single player. Well, maybe.
- 33:14Speaker 8: Shamar James' wife is in labor, and he'll be flying
- 33:17Speaker 8: home with the Joneses. And that's pretty cool. So praying
- 33:21Speaker 8: for an easy delivery.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Okay. All right.
- 33:25Speaker 1: What does this win say to Schottenheimer about his team?
- 33:29Speaker 8: Speaks to the type of young men we have in
- 33:31Speaker 8: the room. You know, these guys are a special group
- 33:33Speaker 8: of young men. They truly do love each other. The
- 33:35Speaker 8: brotherhood is real. There was never finger pointing one way
- 33:39Speaker 8: or the other. And they just went back to work,
- 33:41Speaker 8: you know. And we're going to do it again here
- 33:43Speaker 8: in however many days. I can't count right now.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Is it five?
- 33:47Speaker 5: Five days? Four?
- 33:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:50Speaker 5: So we'll do it again in four days. And you
- 33:52Speaker 5: know what? We can't wait.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Yeah, four days. They play Tampa Bay Thursday night. at
- 33:57Speaker 1: jerry world and finally what about the significance of this
- 34:00Speaker 1: win coming off that heartbreaking loss to the ravens down
- 34:02Speaker 1: in rio the prior week it's.
- 34:04Speaker 8: Not about just the win it's not about rio it's
- 34:07Speaker 8: not about the texans about the way these guys work
- 34:09Speaker 8: you know our message this week was all about two
- 34:10Speaker 8: things really finish gotta find a way to finish you
- 34:13Speaker 8: know they they hit a cool trick play right to
- 34:16Speaker 8: get down inside the five yard line little hook and
- 34:18Speaker 8: ladder type deal and they get down in there and
- 34:20Speaker 8: they score and um nobody questioned for a second that
- 34:23Speaker 8: we would go down the field and we didn't want
- 34:25Speaker 8: the field goal we wanted the touchdown so there we
- 34:28Speaker 8: go and um you know but uh in terms of
- 34:31Speaker 8: the mindset of this football team like the league is
- 34:34Speaker 8: a wild ride and the season's gonna be a wild
- 34:36Speaker 8: ride and we know that and um you know we'll
- 34:39Speaker 8: enjoy this one tonight get back to dallas and uh
- 34:42Speaker 8: it's cool to say uh that uh we won the
- 34:45Speaker 8: state of texas today.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Okay all right uh so now the other side of
- 34:49Speaker 1: that the texan side they're oh and four And in
- 34:52Speaker 1: all four games, had opportunities to win. Even the 20-6
- 34:57Speaker 1: loss to the Bengals. They were in the ball game late.
- 35:01Speaker 3: Yeah, those other three games, you got your defense out there. Yeah.
- 35:04Speaker 3: One stop away.
- 35:06Speaker 2: But couldn't get that stop.
- 35:07Speaker 1: And so, D'Amico Ryans, that coach asked, why does he
- 35:11Speaker 1: feel his team is struggling to finish games on the
- 35:14Speaker 1: plus side?
- 35:15Speaker 4: Today was not a great finish by our team. Defensively,
- 35:20Speaker 4: it was not good enough. The offense... goes out and
- 35:22Speaker 4: plays like they played to give us 30 points defensively,
- 35:26Speaker 4: you have to find a way to close that game out.
- 35:28Speaker 4: And it was disappointing that we've been in three games
- 35:32Speaker 4: that way where the offense has done a great job
- 35:34Speaker 4: and we haven't been able to close it out there
- 35:36Speaker 4: in the second half. So we got to look at
- 35:39Speaker 4: it all and see what changes we need to make
- 35:42Speaker 4: and what we need to fix.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Were there changes and adjustments considered when CeeDee Lamb started
- 35:47Speaker 1: to have the type of game that he wound up having?
- 35:49Speaker 4: We got to play our technique better. In the second half,
- 35:52Speaker 4: it just wasn't good enough. First half, I thought everybody
- 35:54Speaker 4: played the coverages the proper way, where they were supposed
- 35:57Speaker 4: to be, eliminated the explosive plays. And in the second half,
- 36:00Speaker 4: whatever the reason that may be, we did not do
- 36:03Speaker 4: our coverages the proper way.
- 36:05Speaker 1: Texans also really hurt themselves with penalties again, triple-digit number
- 36:09Speaker 1: in terms of penalty yardage. And he was asked about
- 36:12Speaker 1: the impact of those penalties.
- 36:15Speaker 4: The penalties definitely crushed us today. Too many self-inflicted penalties offensively.
- 36:23Speaker 4: We got penalties that started to drive, kickoff return, way
- 36:26Speaker 4: too many penalties, hurting the team, not helping the team,
- 36:29Speaker 4: defensively third down. So we got a lot of things
- 36:32Speaker 4: that we're fighting against ourselves. And you can't win football
- 36:37Speaker 4: in the NFL that way when you're constantly fighting the
- 36:40Speaker 4: uphill battle. So the penalties have to be eliminated.
- 36:43Speaker 1: And there were times when the Texans got stops and
- 36:49Speaker 1: there were times, especially well into the second half and
- 36:52Speaker 1: down the stretch of the game where they just could
- 36:54Speaker 1: not get stops and there were coverage breakdowns.
- 36:56Speaker 2: So how did those things come about?
- 36:59Speaker 4: I have to look at the film and see what happened,
- 37:01Speaker 4: but a couple of plays there where you see CD
- 37:03Speaker 4: is just wide open. That's definitely not our plan. So
- 37:06Speaker 4: we have to look at it to see what happened,
- 37:08Speaker 4: where were the communication miscues that happened, but that's, not
- 37:12Speaker 4: how we play coverage.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Yeah, all right.
- 37:15Speaker 2: And then one more.
- 37:16Speaker 1: You know, they're asking a lot of C.J. Stroud, who's
- 37:19Speaker 1: had his struggles at times this year. So is he
- 37:22Speaker 1: concerned about having to ask this much of his quarterback
- 37:27Speaker 1: each week, game in, game out? C.J.
- 37:29Speaker 4: Is a big boy. He played outstanding today. Threw the
- 37:33Speaker 4: ball around really well. It was great having Nico back.
- 37:35Speaker 4: Would love to be up here celebrating Nico. For him
- 37:37Speaker 4: being back, creating explosive plays there to start the football game,
- 37:41Speaker 4: to get in the end zone two times. Jalen Newell
- 37:44Speaker 4: stepped up, big explosive play on offense. Also, big explosive
- 37:49Speaker 4: kick return as well. So there's a lot of great things.
- 37:53Speaker 4: KB continues to make tough contested catches time and time again.
- 37:56Speaker 4: Hutchinson showed up big time on some third downs, some
- 37:59Speaker 4: catch and run type plays, creating plays. First downs, keeping
- 38:02Speaker 4: the chains moving, so many positive things that I would
- 38:05Speaker 4: love to highlight from our guys' offense. They did a
- 38:07Speaker 4: really great job. Whether it's running the ball, throwing the ball,
- 38:10Speaker 4: it didn't matter. Our guys moved the ball really well.
- 38:13Speaker 4: It just didn't play well enough defensively, and it's a
- 38:19Speaker 4: bad feeling. You don't play that well defensively to finish
- 38:22Speaker 4: a game when the offense did such an outstanding job.
- 38:26Speaker 4: That's just not great on our part.
- 38:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that makes it difficult, truly difficult for the Texans.
- 38:32Speaker 1: We have to try to find a way through this
- 38:34Speaker 1: thing right now, just kind of wandering about it, 0-4.
- 38:38Speaker 1: We will hear more from both head coaches, Brian Schottenheimer
- 38:44Speaker 1: of the Cowboys and D'Amico Ryans of the Texans, coming
- 38:46Speaker 1: up in the 4 o'clock hour. Coming up next, however,
- 38:51Speaker 1: we turn it back to Texas. More from Longhorns head
- 38:54Speaker 1: coach Steve Sarkeesian on this Longhorns Monday. Coming off the
- 38:57Speaker 1: open date, the bye week on the schedule, and getting
- 39:00Speaker 1: ready for the Red River rivalry.
- 39:02Speaker 2: Matchup with the Oklahoma Sooners.
- 39:04Speaker 1: That's next here on a Longhorns Monday on Sports Radio
- 39:07Speaker 1: AM 13 Under the Zone and where you can always
- 39:10Speaker 1: listen to us free of charge on the iHeartRadio app.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Here comes a great bass riff right here. All right.
- 39:21Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 39:33Speaker 1: Here on uh longhorns monday on 13 under the zone
- 39:36Speaker 1: are you doing this uh in in uh i start
- 39:40Speaker 1: saying deference to probably in uh mock commemoration of the
- 39:45Speaker 1: Texans' anniversary?
- 39:47Speaker 2: Is that what you're doing here?
- 39:48Speaker 3: You know, I can't quite put it as nicely as
- 39:50Speaker 3: Brad Sham did on that final call.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 39:53Speaker 3: Could be a fun edit if anyone out there is
- 39:55Speaker 3: into that kind of thing.
- 39:56Speaker 2: I suppose.
- 39:59Speaker 1: Yeah, could put it right into this music. You know,
- 40:03Speaker 1: when I saw Little River Band in concert, they said
- 40:06Speaker 1: the same thing the two times I saw them six
- 40:09Speaker 1: years ago, five years ago, and then back a few
- 40:12Speaker 1: months ago.
- 40:13Speaker 2: And they said the same thing.
- 40:14Speaker 1: They said, now, this song means different things to different people.
- 40:18Speaker 1: If you're happily married or happily in a relationship and
- 40:21Speaker 1: have been, then sing it in joyfulness. But if you're
- 40:25Speaker 1: like how the song was kind of going about five
- 40:28Speaker 1: years and the dude's happy to be away from her,
- 40:32Speaker 1: then you can celebrate that too. You know, however that works.
- 40:36Speaker 1: And I guess you could look at it that way
- 40:37Speaker 1: with regard to the Cowboys win over the Texans. A
- 40:39Speaker 1: couple other NFL notes. before we move back into talking
- 40:43Speaker 1: about the Longhorns. The NFL, you may have seen this
- 40:49Speaker 1: on either SportsCenter or maybe during NBC's coverage of the
- 40:53Speaker 1: NFL game last night. Nice win for the Panthers over
- 40:57Speaker 1: the Lions.
- 40:57Speaker 3: What did I tell you, Craig? Bryce Young turned a corner.
- 41:00Speaker 3: I said it on this show. He looks great.
- 41:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 41:04Speaker 1: But during either that telecast and or the SportsCenter recaps
- 41:09Speaker 1: and all that kind of stuff, It was pointed out
- 41:11Speaker 1: a couple of officials kind of getting after a couple
- 41:16Speaker 1: of players. One of those was a line judge, Jeff Seaman,
- 41:22Speaker 1: who was caught on camera apparently cursing at Arizona Cardinals
- 41:27Speaker 1: tight end Trey McBride during that wild game with the Giants,
- 41:31Speaker 1: which ended with a pick six to seal the deal
- 41:34Speaker 1: for New York and a 36-24 win. Giants' first three-in-one
- 41:38Speaker 1: start since 2017. It took place with just under five
- 41:44Speaker 1: minutes left. The officials did not call a pass interference
- 41:47Speaker 1: or an illegal contact penalty on Drew Phillips of the
- 41:50Speaker 1: Giants who made contact with McBride before the ball arrived
- 41:53Speaker 1: from Jacoby Brissett on a third and two. So that happened.
- 42:00Speaker 1: And he kind of reacted at it, did McBride. And
- 42:07Speaker 1: then referee Adrian Hill said, actually line judge, Jeff Seaman,
- 42:13Speaker 1: cursed at him. And so he got suspended for two games.
- 42:19Speaker 1: Adrian Hill, who was the referee in the Minnesota-Miami game,
- 42:21Speaker 1: got a one-game suspension for what are called an instance
- 42:26Speaker 1: of unprofessional conduct toward a player. He appeared to be
- 42:30Speaker 1: yelling at Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson while pointing for him
- 42:33Speaker 1: to move away after Wilson collided with Hill on a
- 42:36Speaker 1: play that had been whistled dead. The play occurred pretty
- 42:40Speaker 1: early in the ballgame, five and a half minutes ago
- 42:41Speaker 1: in the first quarter. Hill's crew had whistled the play
- 42:44Speaker 1: dead because of a neutral zone infraction by Vikings linebacker
- 42:47Speaker 1: Dallas Turner. Dolphins running back, Ollie Gordon, continued blocking Wilson.
- 42:52Speaker 1: That caused Wilson to collide with Hill, and they knocked
- 42:54Speaker 1: him down. And Wilson said he laughed off the incident
- 43:01Speaker 1: with Hill. He said, it was funny, honestly. I ended
- 43:04Speaker 1: up apologizing to him, and he explained the situation. He
- 43:06Speaker 1: was cool about it. He understood what was going on.
- 43:08Speaker 1: He just said he didn't want us fighting. Me and Gordon,
- 43:10Speaker 1: he said he was just trying to break us up.
- 43:12Speaker 2: They weren't even going to do that.
- 43:14Speaker 3: No, he misunderstood. He went into fight or flight and
- 43:18Speaker 3: got up and started pointing at him.
- 43:20Speaker 2: Yep, cost him a game as a result of that.
- 43:22Speaker 2: So a couple of officials being dealt with by the NFL.
- 43:27Speaker 3: I thought the Hill thing was just kind of a misunderstanding.
- 43:30Speaker 3: The video of this official on the side, like kind
- 43:34Speaker 3: of just smirking and cursing at Trey McBride. Like, yeah,
- 43:36Speaker 3: I'm sure the officials get that kind of language all
- 43:39Speaker 3: game long. It's not an easy job, but you can't
- 43:42Speaker 3: give it back to the player.
- 43:43Speaker 1: You got to be above that.
- 43:44Speaker 3: You can give them a warning. You can throw a flag,
- 43:46Speaker 3: but you can't act like that.
- 43:48Speaker 2: No, you got to be above it.
- 43:50Speaker 1: All right, let's go back to talking about Texas and
- 43:54Speaker 1: hearing from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian. He was asked,
- 43:57Speaker 1: you know, right after talking about how great it was
- 44:00Speaker 1: that the game went, was in Dallas, the site of
- 44:02Speaker 1: the State Fair and all of that. He was asked,
- 44:05Speaker 1: does he like the neutral site as opposed to playing
- 44:09Speaker 1: it home and home? Because, you know, there was a
- 44:13Speaker 1: lot of debate about this before Dallas did the initial
- 44:16Speaker 1: $ 50 million in stadium improvements, and they've since done more
- 44:20Speaker 1: and adding some suites and things like that. But before
- 44:23Speaker 1: they did that, Laura Miller was the mayor of Dallas,
- 44:27Speaker 1: and she was dead set against them doing this. And
- 44:30Speaker 1: it came, I mean, you can take your thumb and
- 44:32Speaker 1: your forefinger and put them a quarter inch apart. It
- 44:34Speaker 1: came that close back several years ago to leaving Dallas
- 44:39Speaker 1: and coming home and home. They were not going to
- 44:41Speaker 1: go to Arlington and play it at Jerry World. DeLoss
- 44:44Speaker 1: Dodds was the athletics director back then in Texas. And
- 44:46Speaker 1: he said, that's not the point. If we're going to
- 44:48Speaker 1: play them on a neutral, it needs to be the
- 44:51Speaker 1: Cotton Bowl with the state fair and the way it's
- 44:53Speaker 1: split and all that other kind of stuff.
- 44:55Speaker 2: Otherwise, we might as well just go home and home.
- 44:57Speaker 2: And it got close.
- 44:59Speaker 1: But eventually, city council and everybody else agreed they needed
- 45:02Speaker 1: to pony up the money to.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Spruce up the Cotton Bowl. They did.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Enlarged the stadium from 75,000 to 92,000. So now you
- 45:10Speaker 1: have 46,000 fans for each side, the north and the south.
- 45:14Speaker 1: That's why there's yelling and screaming on every play, as
- 45:17Speaker 1: the players were asked about later today. And so there's that.
- 45:21Speaker 1: And it's amidst the backdrop of the State Fair of Texas.
- 45:24Speaker 1: And as I pointed out this morning when I was
- 45:26Speaker 1: on with Mike Hardball-Hargen or Longhorn's game day coverage, if
- 45:30Speaker 1: you add the 92,000 fans who are inside the Cotton
- 45:35Speaker 1: Bowl Stadium, and then those on the fairgrounds, which are
- 45:41Speaker 1: estimated to be in excess of 200,000 on that day,
- 45:47Speaker 1: you would have in excess of 300,000 people in that area. Now, again,
- 45:53Speaker 1: for the life of me, if you don't have a
- 45:54Speaker 1: ticket to the game, I don't know what in the
- 45:56Speaker 1: world you're doing going down in there and missing and
- 45:58Speaker 1: messing around in that human soup around the fairgrounds of
- 46:04Speaker 1: the State Fair of Texas if you don't have a
- 46:05Speaker 1: ticket to the game. However, I know a lot of
- 46:07Speaker 1: people go down there without tickets, figuring they check out
- 46:10Speaker 1: the scalper prices.
- 46:11Speaker 2: Maybe they get lucky. Maybe they find what they want.
- 46:14Speaker 1: But there's some people who go down to the State
- 46:16Speaker 1: Fair of Texas on that second Saturday in October, and
- 46:20Speaker 1: they are not about to let a football game get
- 46:22Speaker 1: in the way of having a good time. They're going
- 46:24Speaker 1: to be on the fairgrounds. So, hey, God love you
- 46:26Speaker 1: if that's your deal. go ahead.
- 46:28Speaker 3: I'll have that corny dog if it's the last thing
- 46:30Speaker 3: I eat.
- 46:31Speaker 4: Right.
- 46:32Speaker 1: So there's all these people there and there's the Ferris
- 46:36Speaker 1: wheel and there's the Texas star and there's all the
- 46:39Speaker 1: state fair food and there's the, the, the saltwater taffy
- 46:43Speaker 1: and there's the band and there's the carnival like atmosphere
- 46:46Speaker 1: and all that stuff. So Sark was asked is he
- 46:48Speaker 1: prefer that on that neutral side as a, as opposed
- 46:52Speaker 1: to playing at home and home.
- 46:53Speaker 6: I think it's awesome. Um, as I said, it's, uh,
- 46:56Speaker 6: It's the most unique setting in college football. It's the
- 47:00Speaker 6: most special setting in college football. I know there's other
- 47:03Speaker 6: games that have neutral sites to them. And the majority
- 47:07Speaker 6: of those are split on each side, you know, where
- 47:10Speaker 6: their fans are behind their bench. The idea that this
- 47:12Speaker 6: thing's split at the 50, and half the game is
- 47:15Speaker 6: a home game, and the other half of the game
- 47:17Speaker 6: is a road game, and it's loud when you're on
- 47:20Speaker 6: the road, when you're in OU's end, and so I
- 47:23Speaker 6: love all of that. I love all that this thing
- 47:26Speaker 6: comes with. I love that it's at the state fair,
- 47:30Speaker 6: the smell of the corn dogs, the funnel cakes, and
- 47:32Speaker 6: all that. Like, it's so special. It's so unique, and
- 47:36Speaker 6: I do not take it lightly, but I would not
- 47:38Speaker 6: change it for anything. I think it being there at
- 47:41Speaker 6: the old cop bowl is very, very special.
- 47:43Speaker 2: Okay.
- 47:43Speaker 1: All right. Then he was asked about the way the
- 47:47Speaker 1: defense has played. In three of the last four games,
- 47:49Speaker 1: Oklahoma has not scored a touchdown. It was 23-6 last year,
- 47:53Speaker 1: 34-3 the year before that. Sooners won three years ago, 34-30.
- 47:58Speaker 1: But the year prior to that was 49-0, Texas. So
- 48:02Speaker 1: three of the last four years, Oklahoma has not scored
- 48:05Speaker 1: a touchdown. And Sark was asked, is there something through
- 48:10Speaker 1: what Pete Kwiatkowski's defense has employed and what they did
- 48:15Speaker 1: that Will Muschamp could also employ that there could be
- 48:18Speaker 1: a carryover with the Longhorns' defensive dominance in this game recently?
- 48:22Speaker 6: I think part of it, as I touched on, you've
- 48:25Speaker 6: got to stop the run in this game. You've got
- 48:28Speaker 6: to find a way to get off the field on
- 48:29Speaker 6: third down. That helps stop the run. You can force
- 48:32Speaker 6: some more third longs. You've got to get off the field.
- 48:34Speaker 6: Creating turnovers is so important in this game where you
- 48:37Speaker 6: can generate some short fields for your offense by creating
- 48:40Speaker 6: turnovers and then finding a way to affect the quarterback.
- 48:45Speaker 6: And so those have been kind of common themes that
- 48:48Speaker 6: have happened in those games. Naturally, we've got some players
- 48:52Speaker 6: with similar skill sets to those guys that we've had before.
- 48:56Speaker 6: Some of those guys are still here. Brad Spence had
- 49:00Speaker 6: a heck of a game last year. You know, Colin, Lance,
- 49:04Speaker 6: you know, Grayson Littleton, you know, Jelani's been part of
- 49:07Speaker 6: this game. So we have some familiar faces. Ultimately, you know,
- 49:11Speaker 6: Coach Muschamp's going to devise his scheme that best fits
- 49:14Speaker 6: the personnel that we have to try to be as
- 49:16Speaker 6: effective as we can against this OU team. This OU
- 49:19Speaker 6: team's different. Every team's different each year as it goes.
- 49:22Speaker 6: So I'm sure there's going to be nuances that we
- 49:24Speaker 6: carry over, but ultimately this is, you know, the 2026
- 49:28Speaker 6: Texas defense and how we play, which is going to be,
- 49:31Speaker 6: you know, somewhat different from how we.
- 49:32Speaker 5: Played in the past.
- 49:33Speaker 2: Okay.
- 49:34Speaker 1: All right. And one common thread, is trying to make
- 49:38Speaker 1: sure you got a real effective pass rush. And in
- 49:40Speaker 1: order to have a real effective pass rush, you need
- 49:43Speaker 1: Colin Simmons to be on the top of his game,
- 49:45Speaker 1: which he has been of late. And he was also
- 49:48Speaker 1: asked about what are the needs around Simmons to maximize
- 49:52Speaker 1: that pass rush?
- 49:53Speaker 6: I think one thing that we do have a very
- 49:56Speaker 6: good front, similar to OU. OU has a great front.
- 50:01Speaker 6: The idea of those guys working together is the key
- 50:05Speaker 6: to the whole drill, you know, of having real gap
- 50:08Speaker 6: integrity in the run game because you've got to stop
- 50:10Speaker 6: the run or they never have to throw it. Two,
- 50:14Speaker 6: being disciplined in our pass rush lanes. And so, you know,
- 50:18Speaker 6: there's times when certain guys have the freedom to rush
- 50:21Speaker 6: and other guys are covering for them. There's times everybody's
- 50:25Speaker 6: got to cover their gap to not allow an escape lane.
- 50:28Speaker 6: There's times you're running a game and certain guys are
- 50:31Speaker 6: the contain rushers And so it's everybody working together, I
- 50:36Speaker 6: think is the key to the, to this whole thing. And,
- 50:39Speaker 6: you know, some of those, some of those sacks Colin
- 50:42Speaker 6: were tremendous individual efforts. Other ones were everybody did their
- 50:47Speaker 6: job and flushed the quarterback to him. And then he
- 50:49Speaker 6: has the ability to get them on the ground. And
- 50:51Speaker 6: so I think it's all those things tying together to
- 50:53Speaker 6: go along with the scheme and to go along with
- 50:56Speaker 6: the coverage in the backend, because if there's free access
- 50:59Speaker 6: throws and, It's hard to get to the quarterback when
- 51:01Speaker 6: he can get the ball out of his hands. So
- 51:03Speaker 6: everything tying together, to your point, allows for a rusher
- 51:07Speaker 6: of his caliber to do what he does.
- 51:09Speaker 1: Shifting over to the offense, Sark was asked what he
- 51:11Speaker 1: learned about Arch from last year's game when the Longhorns
- 51:16Speaker 1: won over Oklahoma.
- 51:17Speaker 6: One, I learned he was a physically tough guy. I mean,
- 51:19Speaker 6: he took a pounding at Florida last year in that game.
- 51:22Speaker 1: And, I mean....
- 51:25Speaker 6: He stood in there until the end, you know, he
- 51:27Speaker 6: had to come out for one play and goes back
- 51:29Speaker 6: into the game, you know, after getting his helmet knocked off.
- 51:31Speaker 6: And so we found out about his physical toughness. I
- 51:34Speaker 6: think what we found out in this game, we found
- 51:37Speaker 6: out about his mental toughness, you know, and his ability to, um,
- 51:41Speaker 6: persevere the grit, the mental toughness that he possesses to,
- 51:46Speaker 6: you know, you gotta remember the first half wasn't great
- 51:48Speaker 6: for us in that game. You know, we, we did
- 51:49Speaker 6: not play a great first quarter, um, we finally put
- 51:53Speaker 6: a drive together and then we get a holding penalty.
- 51:56Speaker 6: We complete a ball behind the line of scrimmage. We
- 51:58Speaker 6: knock ourselves out of field goal range and we're in
- 52:00Speaker 6: the locker room. it wasn't great. But the way he
- 52:03Speaker 6: played the second half of that game where a lot
- 52:05Speaker 6: of guys could have harbored thoughts from the past, I
- 52:08Speaker 6: thought he stayed connected to the game, stayed connected to
- 52:11Speaker 6: his teammates and really played a very good second half
- 52:14Speaker 6: of football. And so I learned the physical toughness, the
- 52:17Speaker 6: mental toughness side that Arch Manning possesses. And those are
- 52:22Speaker 6: traits that obviously he still has, you know, and we're
- 52:25Speaker 6: fortunate to have him.
- 52:26Speaker 1: All right. One thing that has worked well For the
- 52:30Speaker 1: offensive ladies, what's called 10 personnel. That's one back, no
- 52:33Speaker 1: tight ends. You hear about 12 personnel, one back, two
- 52:36Speaker 1: tight ends. You hear about 13. The Rams use 13
- 52:39Speaker 1: a lot. One back, three tight ends.
- 52:41Speaker 3: I had a rough year in fantasy once where I
- 52:43Speaker 3: was running 13 personnel.
- 52:46Speaker 1: But the longer it's been running 10, meaning one running
- 52:50Speaker 1: back and then the four wide outs. And so not
- 52:54Speaker 1: having a tight end out there. And that fourth wide
- 52:56Speaker 1: out has been Jermaine Bishop, the freshman.
- 52:58Speaker 3: So.
- 52:59Speaker 1: Sarkis asks, what is he liked about having the 10
- 53:01Speaker 1: personnel with Bishop on the field?
- 53:03Speaker 6: The first three guys, you know, Cam, Emmett, and Ryan
- 53:06Speaker 6: have all earned and worthy of playing football for us.
- 53:09Speaker 6: You know, these guys have had great off seasons. They
- 53:11Speaker 6: had great training camps. They've started the year well. Jermaine
- 53:14Speaker 6: has been a guy that has pushed the envelope for us.
- 53:17Speaker 6: And again, you know, you have to remember he was
- 53:20Speaker 6: with us at receiver and spring ball June and July
- 53:24Speaker 6: all summer. I had him at DB. And then when
- 53:27Speaker 6: we went back to training camp, he moved back to
- 53:28Speaker 6: wide receiver. And so it took some time to get
- 53:31Speaker 6: him back into the fold. He's a guy naturally, you know,
- 53:34Speaker 6: he's a very smart football player. The game comes easy
- 53:37Speaker 6: to him. I think we see when the ball's in
- 53:40Speaker 6: his hands, he can make plays. And so, you know, again,
- 53:44Speaker 6: I'm always trying offensively, you know, what can we do
- 53:47Speaker 6: that can make us harder to defend moving forward. And
- 53:51Speaker 6: so the idea that we can go from 12 personnel,
- 53:54Speaker 6: the 10 personnel, the 20 personnel, the 21 to 11,
- 53:58Speaker 6: and do it efficiently and not feel like our gears
- 54:02Speaker 6: aren't shifting, we're going to try to take advantage of that.
- 54:06Speaker 6: naturally we haven't been as efficient as we've wanted to
- 54:09Speaker 6: be offensively. So there's that fine line of, you know,
- 54:12Speaker 6: what does that look like and how do you do
- 54:13Speaker 6: it so that we don't lose rhythm offensively? And I
- 54:15Speaker 6: think that's always the challenge. But it's been a nice
- 54:19Speaker 6: addition and getting him on the field has been good
- 54:21Speaker 6: for us.
- 54:21Speaker 2: Now, thoughts on Oklahoma. The Sooners are 2-2.
- 54:25Speaker 1: They come off a blowout loss at Georgia before the
- 54:28Speaker 1: open date last week. They had been kind of uninspiring
- 54:34Speaker 1: in a home win over New Mexico. They lost at Michigan,
- 54:38Speaker 1: a loss that is not aging well after the Wolverines
- 54:43Speaker 1: lost in the Little Brown Jug matchup with.
- 54:45Speaker 2: Minnesota on Saturday.
- 54:47Speaker 1: So his thoughts on Oklahoma being two and two and
- 54:51Speaker 1: not starting the season off well.
- 54:53Speaker 6: I'd say this about Oklahoma. I don't know that necessarily
- 54:56Speaker 6: they haven't played well. I think, first of all, defensively,
- 54:59Speaker 6: they played exceptional. These guys are phenomenal defensive football team.
- 55:03Speaker 6: I think, unfortunately, offensively, they've had some untimely turnovers that
- 55:08Speaker 6: have just hurt them. But I do think there's some
- 55:11Speaker 6: things they're doing offensively. Now, they've played some tough games.
- 55:14Speaker 6: You know, they've played at Michigan, which is not easy.
- 55:17Speaker 6: They've played at Georgia, which we know is not easy.
- 55:20Speaker 6: And so, you know, I'm sure Coach Venables wishes he
- 55:24Speaker 6: had the schedule of some other teams that had, and
- 55:26Speaker 6: they could be 4-0 and so on.
- 55:27Speaker 3: And so forth.
- 55:28Speaker 6: That's the life we live in our conference, you know,
- 55:30Speaker 6: and We found that out last week. I got a
- 55:32Speaker 6: chance to watch some football Saturday, and there were some
- 55:35Speaker 6: teams that people thought were unbeatable in our conference and
- 55:37Speaker 6: are sitting at home with a loss or after a
- 55:40Speaker 6: tough game. And so that's the life we live in
- 55:42Speaker 6: the Southeastern Conference, and the key is can we get
- 55:45Speaker 6: back up and do it again the next week. And
- 55:47Speaker 6: so I can promise you nobody's overlooking anybody in this game.
- 55:51Speaker 6: Our guys watch Saturday. They know what it's about. The
- 55:53Speaker 6: guys that have been part of this game know what
- 55:54Speaker 6: it's about. We were in the same situation a year ago.
- 55:58Speaker 6: We were just coming off of losing to Florida. We
- 56:01Speaker 6: were a two-loss team. We were a desperate football team
- 56:03Speaker 6: and found a way to win and played a really
- 56:05Speaker 6: good second half. And so we know what it is.
- 56:08Speaker 6: We're going to need to find a way to put
- 56:10Speaker 6: together four quarters of good football, doing the things that
- 56:14Speaker 6: I touched on that are going to be important in
- 56:15Speaker 6: this game.
- 56:16Speaker 1: And one more from Sark this hour. It's all about
- 56:18Speaker 1: the emotion stuff, right? It's a highly emotionally driven contest.
- 56:26Speaker 1: So he was asked, you know, it starts off emotionally.
- 56:30Speaker 1: Does it stay that way the whole game?
- 56:32Speaker 6: I think what happens in rivalry games, there's always a
- 56:35Speaker 6: ton of emotion in pregame for whatever reason, the ball's
- 56:38Speaker 6: not kicked off, but everybody's all hyped up for, for pregame.
- 56:42Speaker 6: There's a lot of emotion at the start of the game.
- 56:43Speaker 6: And how do we, how do we kind of temper
- 56:45Speaker 6: those emotions and stay focused on the task at hand?
- 56:48Speaker 6: I didn't think we did a great job of that
- 56:50Speaker 6: a year ago. Offensively, we were a little out of
- 56:52Speaker 6: sorts at the start of the game. Um, And then
- 56:55Speaker 6: the flow of the game starts and guys just start playing.
- 56:59Speaker 6: And I think the crowd generates a lot of that emotion.
- 57:03Speaker 6: And so I think the emotion is really high. It
- 57:05Speaker 6: dies down and then it kind of spikes throughout the game.
- 57:09Speaker 6: And then generally, if it's a tight game, the emotions
- 57:11Speaker 6: will be high late. I think through it all, how
- 57:14Speaker 6: do we stay even keel through that emotion and stay
- 57:18Speaker 6: focused on the task at hand?
- 57:21Speaker 1: All right, so we'll hear some more from Sark coming
- 57:22Speaker 1: up next hour. We're going to shift to baseball and
- 57:24Speaker 1: talk about the playoffs coming up next when we continue
- 57:26Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the
- 57:29Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app.
- 57:37Speaker 2: Here's Murakami.
- 57:39Speaker 4: The set by Messick and the pitch.
- 57:44Speaker 7: Deep to right way out of here it's two to
- 57:49Speaker 7: nothing well there it is a leadoff man reached and
- 57:53Speaker 7: he scored oh what a shot and was he fired
- 57:58Speaker 7: up First time he's homered in the playoffs. Sox had
- 58:04Speaker 7: the lead here in the fourth inning. And from that
- 58:06Speaker 7: bases loaded situation for the Guardians that they did not
- 58:10Speaker 7: score in the bottom of the third to turn it
- 58:13Speaker 7: around in the first two aboard for the White Sox
- 58:16Speaker 7: and in.
- 58:18Speaker 3: Here's the pitch.
- 58:19Speaker 1: Wind drive.
- 58:20Speaker 7: Base hit up the middle.
- 58:26Speaker 6: Yellich scores.
- 58:29Speaker 1: Here comes Freeland to the plate.
- 58:31Speaker 6: The throw.
- 58:31Speaker 5: Brewers win.
- 58:32Speaker 3: Jackson Turrio gives the Brewers a 2-0 series lead. You
- 58:56Speaker 3: have got to be kidding me.
- 59:01Speaker 7: Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the voice
- 59:03Speaker 7: of the Longhorns, Craig Way.
- 59:05Speaker 6: Follow Craig on social media at Horn Voice.
- 59:09Speaker 1: Actually, it's one of the most overused play-by-play cliches and
- 59:13Speaker 1: all that.
- 59:14Speaker 2: You've got to be kidding me. But no.
- 59:19Speaker 1: As Jeff Levering called it, the Brewers with that walk-off
- 59:22Speaker 1: win over the Padres yesterday and Len Casper. Calling the
- 59:26Speaker 1: Munitaka Murakami home run for the White Sox.
- 59:29Speaker 3: That thing just landed right now.
- 59:31Speaker 1: Wow. Did he smoke that one? They won game one
- 59:34Speaker 1: of that wild card series. Game two of each of
- 59:38Speaker 1: those series is coming up. The White Sox-Guardians game.
- 59:45Speaker 2: Starts in about 20 minutes. Something like that. Okay.
- 59:47Speaker 1: And then this evening will be game two of the
- 59:51Speaker 1: Yankees and the Rays. So the White Sox have used
- 59:57Speaker 1: a major league leading 11 bullpen games to that. And
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: of course, they used it in game one. So their
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: sixth postseason shutout for the White Sox in their history there.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: And so they did that. And remember, they're the sixth
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: seed in this thing in the American League. And they're
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: trying to get a commanding 2-0 lead going home with
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: trying to go up two games to none on the Guardians.
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: The Tampa Bay New York series raised one of the
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: Yankees 1-0. Drew Rasmussen was incredible for them. He issued
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: two walks to the first three innings and then just
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: really Settled in, made some adjustments, and did not walk
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: any more batters. Just allowed one hit. He went 7-2 scoreless.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: I mean, hitless as well as scoreless. Set a franchise
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: postseason record with 10 strikeouts. Had a career-high 23 swing
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: and misses in that. And so they won 1-0. And
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: now here they go with game two tonight.
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: Must win time for the Yankees.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: I mean, even though they're going home, They were in
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: the same situation that the Braves were in and the
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: Padres were in yesterday, except the Braves won and the
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: Padres didn't. So the Yankees are trying to avoid the
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: situation that San Diego is in right now. The Padres
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: are going home, but they're down two games to none
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: to Milwaukee. Atlanta comes up with a bullpen game and
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: able to take advantage of the fact that Blake Snell
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: was not completely on his game. They scratched out one
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: run against him. And then two more runs against the
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: Dodger bullpen and held on. All that was allowed by
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: that Atlanta bullpen game was a solo homer to Freddie
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: Freeman and a solo homer.
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: To Max Muncy. And that was it.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: And they hold on and they win 3-2. So they
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: go on with a split. So when we look at
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: this now, first of all, game twos this afternoon and
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: this evening in the American League. Here's Chicago trying to
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: go up with a commanding 2-0 series lead on a
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: team they defeated. To win the regular season series, Cleveland,
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: even though the Guardians won the American League Central, and
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: the Yankees trying to avoid going down two games today.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: It'd be really difficult for Cleveland if they were to
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: lose and go down 2-0 going to Chicago. They'd have
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: to win two games there in Chicago to get it
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: back to Cleveland for a decisive fifth game.
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: Well, you were going to have to steal one start
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: in the series. maybe even two, from the combination of
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: Messick and Williams, that punch at the top of the
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: rotation for Cleveland, the fact that they did that in
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: game one, all of a sudden it just puts so
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: much pressure on the home team. I mean, if you
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: lose game one at home, In the short series, it
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: can be so, so difficult to come back from that.
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: At the same time, it's easy to get momentum back
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: in these short series. So we'll see if the Guardians
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: can not only get back and tie the series today,
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: but test the depth of that White Sox pitching staff.
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: I think they've got Sean Burke lined up for game three.
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: They don't want to have to use any of those
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: bulk reliever guys to kind of back up their effort
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: that they're going to get today from Kay.
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: Meanwhile, the Yankees try to bounce back.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: They only lost. one to nothing. And, of course, they're
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: going to Cam Schlittler, their American League Cy Young favorite,
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: for that. Freddie Peralta will go for the raise in that.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: It's a good pitching matchup, but the Yankees really leaning
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: on Schlittler to come through.
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: Next, the team that hits Cam Schlittler in the postseason
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: will be the first. Three starts, 0.87 ERA, 24 strikeouts,
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: one walk. We're talking about elite company for this guy
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: in his postseason career so far. And Freddy Peralta, right,
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: was pretty vocal about some of the nerves he was
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: feeling going into the contract year in New York. The
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: change of scenery from Milwaukee didn't go over well. Gets
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: back to Tropicana Field. I don't know if it has
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: to do with pitching inside the dome or just kind
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: of the Rays pitching prowess, the magic touch. They seem
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: to have fixed him and he's been unhittable for about
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: a month. So that game might be first team to
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: score wins.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: Yeah. Having said all that, Rasmussen's been the best pitcher
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: in baseball last month. And that's why, you know, that's
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: why the Rays got what they got. But to your point,
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: just behind him was Schlittler. who's been better than Peralta.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: The Yankees absolutely have to win. Don't want to go
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: down two games to none. That's the situation the Padres win.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: How about Jackson Churrio? Just playing without a conscience. First
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: of all, he had the home run on Saturday night
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: that hit the cabling there that was dangling from the roof. Now,
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: there were a lot of fans who claimed, and media
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: as well, saying the Padres were robbed. It shouldn't be
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: that way. Nobody was robbed. That's how the rule is written.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: That's the ground rule. Is the ground rule messed up
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: or does Major League Baseball have.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: To change something?
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: You can discuss that in the offseason, but there were
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: no rules violated by what happened. In fact, when the
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: lineup cards were being exchanged, they said they were joking
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: about this afterwards that, you know, about, hey, any ball
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: that hits that cabling or whatever and stays in play
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: is in play and can be called for an out.
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: And they said, yeah, like tonight, they've never seen that happen. Yeah, well,
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: tonight will be the first night. And lo and behold,
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: it did. Made a big difference. Churio, give him credit
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: for catching that ball off the cable and coming down
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: for an out. And it was Churio who had the
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: goal-ahead home run in game one and then the walk-off
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: base hit in game two.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: So he's a man with a plan, right?
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: I was talking with Brewers pregame host Hunter Baumgartner on
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: his way out to San Diego with the team. And
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: we were discussing who Brewer or otherwise has the most
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: to gain, the most to prove in this postseason. You
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: can answer Jackson Churrio for either one of those questions.
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: It's a Brewer team that we know is built to
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: be the best over 162. What we haven't seen is
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: can they be the best over five and over seven.
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: And the thing that can put them over the top,
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: Big stars performing in big games. They've gotten that from
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: Churrio and from Contreras in the series already.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: And for Atlanta, they turned to the race. They rolled
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: the dice that Chris Sale would be ready. And really, truly,
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: what Weiss and the Braves have said, it really wasn't
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: a hard decision for them. They wanted him on full
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: max rest. Well, they got that. The gamble was that
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: the bullpen game would work. And with Blake Snell, who's
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: been really good in the postseason. Snell was not good
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: last night. And the bullpen for the Braves was. And
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: that's why it's all even at a game apiece heading
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: to Atlanta for game three tomorrow. We'll be back to
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: wrap up hour number two on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: Third and final hour of the program here on Sports
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: Radio AM 13 Under the Zone. Craig Way alongside the producer,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: Jay Kerman. Glad to have you with us on this Monday,
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: a Longhorns Monday, where we recap. In most weeks, we're
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: recapping the game played the prior Saturday. But, of course,
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: we didn't have a game played the prior Saturday. So
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: we're recapping the press conference there with Longhorn's head coach,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: Steve Sarkeesian, where he outlined the preparations for the Oklahoma Sooners,
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: the Red River rivalry matchup. As our man CB, the
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: Twitter savant, says it's been 1,094 games. days and counting
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: since Oklahoma last scored a touchdown against Texas.
- 1:07:45Speaker 3: But who's counting?
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: CB's counting.
- 1:07:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: Uh, somebody else said, uh, it's hard to comprehend that
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: Texas is only a 7.5 favorite over Oklahoma. I'm sure
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: this can be attributed to Texas offensive struggles. In fact,
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: John Mather, I guess he meant, uh, uh, Mateer. So
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: John Mather has better stats than Manning. Um, to that,
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: I think you're exactly right. Uh, It's more about the
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: Oklahoma defense than it is the Texas offense, in case
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: you haven't looked at Oklahoma's defensive numbers.
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: They're really, really good.
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: Even against Georgia, I mean, the offense is what killed them,
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: the pick six.
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: Which gets into the other stat, when he said Mateer's
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: stats are better than Manning's. They're really, when you look
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: at them, I saw a side-by-side comparison. They're very, very close.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: And Mateer does have a slight edge in, like, completion
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: percentage and, I think, yards. Mateer has four turnovers. Manning
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: has three. Arches three turnovers, an interception at the end
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: of the first half against Texas State when Emmitt Mosley
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: slipped in the end zone, and then the safety for
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: Texas State made a nice sliding catch on the pick.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: And the other two were the two deep balls to
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: Cam Coleman, the one that hit the weird bounce against
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: Ohio State. when it bounced off the turf and the
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: ball went in the air and got picked off. The
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: other was against Tennessee where, credit the Tennessee defensive back,
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: taking the ball away from Coleman on the way down.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Those were the three interceptions. All four of Mateers have
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: been catastrophic, have led directly to touchdowns or resulted in
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: a touchdown.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: Pick six.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: He also had that fumble thing where the ball flew
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: out of his hands. So that's the difference. And I
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: think we'll hear Toby Rowland speak. We heard Cale Gundy
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: talk about that last week. And, you know, when he
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: was on with us on Friday. But Toby Rowland, the
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: voice of the Sooners, will be on with us tomorrow.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: And I'm sure he'll address that. It's been avoiding the
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: catastrophic turnover.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: That's the deal.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: So if you want to say that Mateer's numbers are
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: better than that, you're right. They are.
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: By a little bit, they are.
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: But the turnovers, it's not even close in the comparison
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: how the turnovers have hurt the team. And in the
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: case of all three Texas turnovers, Only one led to points,
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: and that was the Ohio State second touchdown.
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: First touchdown.
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: There are quarterback stats that don't get attributed to quarterbacks alone,
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: but they can tell you about quarterback play besides just
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: your yards, your completion percentage, your touchdowns. Third down offense,
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: that's a quarterback stat. Texas middle of the pack in
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: the SEC right now. Oklahoma near the back. That's an indictment,
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: I think, on some of Mateer's play early on. And
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: then sacks. taking a sack can be a quarterback stat
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: and arch has been better at avoiding those for the
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: most part until that Tennessee game that John Mateer has
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: this year.
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: Now the other reason why I think the, and again,
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: I usually don't pay that much attention to it, but
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: the seven and a half point thing is you've got
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: to take that rivalry thing into consideration. I've mentioned this before.
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: I've seen, you know, times where the rivalry game was
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: coming up against Oklahoma and And one side or the
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: other was heavily favored. I can think certainly back to 2013.
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: I think Oklahoma's like a 15-point favorite going into that.
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: And Texas won by 16. So they won 36-20. Jonathan
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: Gray had a big game in that. I think back
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: to 2015, under Charlie Strong, Texas was struggling.
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: They lost 50-7 to TCU.
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: I remember this game. I listened to your call of
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: this game when I was 15.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: Two-touchdown favorite. And Texas won the game 24-17.
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: I listened to that call in the Bryant-Denny parking lot.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: Oh, Ralph. Okay.
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: Who was Alabama playing that day?
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: Hosting Arkansas.
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: Oh, I'm sure that wasn't easy.
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: They were down at the half, and then Jake Coker
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: found Calvin Ridley for two second-half TDs.
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: Well, there you go.
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: So, point being, I think the rivalry does have a
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: lot to do with it. And at least in terms
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: of uplifting the play, there's a lot of pride, obviously,
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: that goes into this. Now, it still comes down to execution,
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: how well you execute offensively and defensively in the game.
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: So we'll see as Texas tries to go for its
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: third straight win and its fourth in the last five
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: years over Oklahoma getting ready for the Sooners. It'll be
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: Saturday afternoon. It's a 2.30 kickoff. We'll be on the
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: air on the network at 1.30 Two hours prior to
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: that is Longhorn's game day from the State Fair of Texas,
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: the fairgrounds. One hour prior to that, at 10.30 in
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: the morning, four hours prior to kick, is the third
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: and Longhorn pregame presentation, their preview of it as well.
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: And then, of course, the kickoff, as I mentioned, 2.30
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: there at the State Fair of Texas there in Dallas. Now,
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: we should also tell you, Friday, we will be at
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: Bar W on Maple Avenue. It's kind of become our
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: Dallas home away from home on Texas OU weekend. Great
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: sports bar and great vibe and atmosphere down there near
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: the uptown area on Maple Avenue. If you know Dallas,
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: it's where the old Stonely P bar was. It's a
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: great scene. And we'll be out there on Friday. You know,
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: Kim Parker, Mike Hardball, Harge. Mark Henry, Bucky Godbolts, Brad Kellner, BK.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: And so we'll all be there on Friday, and the
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: show will go five hours from 2 to 7 on
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: Friday from Dallas, getting you ready for the Red River rivalry.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: So we'll look forward to bringing you that. Okay, with
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: regard to the NFL, the Cowboys... managed to get the
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: 2-2 with the win. Huge win. And you say, how huge?
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: Come on. I mean, you know, it's the Texans. They're
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: 0-4 now.
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: It was more about the Cowboys trying to break through
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: and stave off going 1-3. And the New England Patriots
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: and the Los Angeles Rams were in the same boat
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: for that. First of all, for the Cowboys, I love that...
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: I've always gotten a big kick out of when ESPN
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: does their game win probability things, and they do it
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: at various points in the game, and the win probability
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: is very, very low. And so for the Cowboys-Texans, the
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: lowest win probability came with two minutes to go in
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: the game, 21.5% for the Cowboys. And now their chance
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: to make the playoffs after the win is, according to
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: their football power index, is 82%. So, you know, they
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: had the narrow loss to the Ravens in Brazil, and then,
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: you know, they were in trouble.
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: Great week for me, picking them to win the division.
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, there you go.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: So, you know, there was, you know, late in the game,
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: in addition to CeeDee Lamb just had an unconscionable game,
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: 17 catches, 189 yards. And 11 first downs in addition
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: to three on the drive that won the game for
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: the Cowboys.
- 1:15:17Speaker 3: First downs. That's a good wide receiver stat that doesn't
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: show up on a box score.
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: You're exactly right. It doesn't get that. It doesn't get
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: enough credit, I think. So it was mainly the fact
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: what they were able to do. Lamb running that skinny
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: post against Jalen Petrie, the former Baylor Bear. He's playing
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: outside leverage and he cut inside. No help inside, made
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: the catch. The Cowboys will still try to figure out
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: their running game. Javante Williams had three touchdowns, but it
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: was from a combined 10 yards on those. But they
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: have a wounded Tampa Bay team coming in with Jalen
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: Daniels now playing quarterback then with Baker Mayfield out with
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: a dislocated thumb.
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: And that's on Thursday night, and it's a quick turnaround.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: But it is at home.
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: And it comes off having just played in Houston. So
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: that's a quick trip home. And they have Tampa Bay
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: on Thursday and a chance to get back above the
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: 500 mark.
- 1:16:17Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: How's your conditioning, right? Coming off of Rio, grueling game
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: that felt like it went to overtime, even though it didn't.
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: It was long. It was dramatic. You get a similar
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: dramatic second half against the Texans. I mean, you look
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: at those two games. That would tell you this Cowboys
- 1:16:33Speaker 3: team trusts and believes in their conditioning a lot, having
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: watched them come from behind, seemingly come back from the
- 1:16:39Speaker 3: dead in a couple of fourth quarters, two weeks in
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: a row. So that, to me, bodes well heading into
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: a tough schedule spot on Thursday.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: All right, so then add to that two other ones,
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: Patriots and Bills. With 427 remaining in the game, the
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: Patriots had a win probability.
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: Of 15.3%, just 15%. But they bounced back.
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: Drake May led a late scoring drive to beat the
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: Bills in Buffalo. They were trailing by five with 421
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: to go. They went 73 yards with a touchdown to
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: Efton Chisholm III.
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: Yeah, he was getting chirped by the Bills on this.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: Yeah, for being a practice squad guy.
- 1:17:20Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: Practice this, he said. Anyway, so he got it in there. So, huge.
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: That was really big for the Patriots to be able
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: to hand the Bills back. their first loss of the season.
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: And who do the Bills play next week? Well, they
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: play the Rams. And the Rams, who, of course, had
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: that really ugly performance out in Australia, where they clearly
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: weren't prepared for a vastly improved 49ers team who just
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: beat them up and down the field. And the 49ers,
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: by the way, one of just three teams still unbeaten
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: in the NFL. Can you name the other two? Lightning
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: round right off the bat.
- 1:17:56Speaker 3: Kansas City?
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: And?
- 1:17:57Speaker 3: Who am I missing?
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: The team you've discounted from day one.
- 1:18:02Speaker 3: The Minnesota Vikings.
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: There you go.
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: I was out, but I'm still out.
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: If you're going to pat yourself on the back for
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: picking the Cowboys to be in the division, you have
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: to also own up the fact that you didn't have
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: them in the playoffs.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: Neither did I. Neither of us had them make it
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: to the playoffs, right?
- 1:18:16Speaker 4: Nobody.
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: Well, to be fair, they still might not make the playoffs.
- 1:18:20Speaker 3: I'm not fully endorsing this 4-0 start for the Vikings.
- 1:18:22Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:18:24Speaker 3: But they've impressed me.
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: So here are the Rams. who looked ugly against San Francisco,
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: looked impressive against the Giants, but they were the Giants.
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: Even though the Giants, that's their only loss. They're 3-1 now.
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: Then they just had that ugly game and got the
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: bad call and the loss to Denver when they had
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: a 16 to nothing halftime lead. They got away from it,
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: but it's a loss. And the one and two. And
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: then having to go to Philadelphia. And they're down by
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: 10 in the fourth quarter. At 857 to go in
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: the game, their win probability 3.4%. So the Eagles had
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: even picked up four yards and They even called a timeout.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: They were trying to set up a third down score
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: that was going to ice the game. A touchdown would
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: have made it a three-score game with about eight minutes
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: to go. So here they were about on the verge
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: of going one and three. In fact, my nephew had
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: texted me and said, are the Rams really going to
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: be one and three? And I said, it's looking like it.
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: But then the Rams managed to get a stop. They
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: were able to get it. Jalen Hurts didn't feel to
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: snap cleanly. And then Tank Bigsby, wasn't in position to
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: take the handoff, so Hurts tried to improvise it, and
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: Quentin Lake stopped him for no gain. Bixby's in there
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: because Saquon Barkley's out injured.
- 1:19:46Speaker 6: Hamstring.
- 1:19:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: So then they go for it on fourth down.
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: Which was the right decision. It didn't work, but it
- 1:19:53Speaker 3: was the right decision. Because it would have just, it
- 1:19:55Speaker 3: still would have been a two-score game. Would have been 23-10,
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: but still would have been a two-score game. And they
- 1:20:00Speaker 3: go for it at pass to Darius.
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: Cooper was incomplete after Cooper made a spectacular grab earlier
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: in the game.
- 1:20:06Speaker 3: That should have been a pick.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: So it looked like the Eagles were still in pretty
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: good shape, but all of a sudden the Rams come
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: to life on back-to-back scoring drives. Matthew Stafford, who struggled
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: earlier in the game, went 12 of 15 for 140 yards,
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: seven first downs of back-to-back scoring drives. Pukunuku had some
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: big catches. Kyron Williams had 16 carries for 80 yards
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: and led the team with 13 targets. And They come back.
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: They score a touchdown. And Kyron Williams gets in the
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: end zone. Now it's 20-17. They kick off. And then
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: the Rams' defense stops the Eagles again. This time they
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: force them to punt. And then the Rams drive down
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: the field and score again. Kyron Williams with a really tough,
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: tough run. He got knocked around in this game.
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: Yeah, he got.
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: Smacked going up in the air with a catch. Got
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: hit out of bounds. It caused the Eagles... 15 yards
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: as well.
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: So I've got major concerns about the Eagles at this
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: point of the season, Craig. I mean, 0 for 12
- 1:21:10Speaker 3: on third down in this game, 1 for 4, obviously.
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: It just feels like they can't get the clutch yardage
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: that they need to. The offensive line is not playing
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: to the level where it was.
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: Well, Lane Johnson's out. And then on top of that,
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: think about who else is out. Now Saquon Barkley's out.
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: Devontae Smith is out. I mean, they're guys that are
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: banged up. as well, but everybody's got injury problems, everybody's
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: got injury, the Rams are doing without Miles Garrett, they
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: had to play, you know, they had to play, you know,
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: without Puka Nakua for a couple of weeks, Aaron Donald
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: couldn't play last week, so they were banged up, and
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: so they rallied back and beat him, and by the way, now,
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: because they did rally him, because they did win, their
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: playoff chances are 72% according to the FPI. But that
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: stuff goes up and down like the stock market, those deals,
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: depending on what happens in a given game. So now
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: we get to see this week what happens with those teams.
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: The Cowboys, of course, play Thursday night against the Tampa
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: Bay Bucs.
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: You can hear it on 98.1 FM, KVET. You can
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: hear that coming up on Thursday night.
- 1:22:23Speaker 3: You can check out Longhorn Weekly at halftime. Flip over
- 1:22:26Speaker 3: to AM.
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right. That's exactly right. Then, in addition to that,
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: New England is at home against the Raiders. That ought
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: to be interesting. The Raiders played Kansas City tough, but
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: the Chiefs were able to pull away. And the Rams
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: play the Bills on Monday night back in L.A. So, now,
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: you know, I mean, that grind continues for L.A. San Francisco...
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: in Australia, Giants at home, at Denver, at Philadelphia, home
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: against Buffalo.
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: So that'll be interesting to watch as well.
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: All right, coming up next, we're going to hear more
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: from Longhorns head coach, Steve Sarkisian, here on a Longhorns
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: Monday on Sports Radio AM 13 under the zone on
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app. They're on a long orange Monday on
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: 1300 The Zone. By the way, game two of the
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: White Sox and Guardians is underway. Cleveland batting in the
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: top of the first. They have a threat working. They
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: have two in scoring position with two down. No score
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: yet in that one. Anthony Kaye on the mound for
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: the White Sox. And Will Venable's not wasting any time.
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: He's going to the bullpen. Yeah, in the first inning.
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: Playoff baseball, folks. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: So far, just about every move he's made in the
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: postseason has been a good one. So we'll see if
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: he can get that third out, get out of the
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: inning there. All right, we'll keep you posted on that.
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: Let's go back to the Longhorns and Longhorns head coach,
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: Steve Sarkeesian, and his thoughts on, and again, at a
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: press conference, even though every year is different, every year's
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: matchup is a little bit different, folks are are want
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: to lean on history especially in a rivalry game so
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: sark was asked you know earlier he was asked about
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: the defense how the defense had done against oklahoma keeping
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: out of the end zone uh three times in the
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: last four years that sort of thing he was also
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: asked about how they were able to run the football
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: especially down the stretch against ou the last couple of
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: years and he was asked if there's any secret sauce
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: involved there i.
- 1:24:38Speaker 6: Think part of it is being committed to it right
- 1:24:42Speaker 6: um Everybody wants to run the ball, and sometimes it's
- 1:24:46Speaker 6: not always pretty. Everybody wants to run the ball, and
- 1:24:48Speaker 6: the first run doesn't go for eight yards. Sometimes it
- 1:24:51Speaker 6: goes for one. It's like you can't just give up.
- 1:24:54Speaker 6: I think what also helps you stay committed to the
- 1:24:56Speaker 6: run is playing good defense. And when you're playing good
- 1:24:59Speaker 6: defensive football, sometimes games aren't pretty early on, but you
- 1:25:03Speaker 6: can stay committed to it, and then inevitably the dam
- 1:25:05Speaker 6: starts to break, and you can start to snap off
- 1:25:09Speaker 6: some longer runs that way. So it's the complementary football
- 1:25:13Speaker 6: aspect of it, of the defense allowing the offense to
- 1:25:16Speaker 6: stay committed to the run. It's the offensive players understanding that,
- 1:25:22Speaker 6: You know, stay true to what we're doing. Here's the plan.
- 1:25:25Speaker 6: Here's what we're going to try to do in this
- 1:25:27Speaker 6: game or that game in particular. And then, you know,
- 1:25:29Speaker 6: when the dam does break, are the runners hitting it
- 1:25:32Speaker 6: where it's supposed to go to take advantage of it? So, again,
- 1:25:37Speaker 6: but the flow of the game sometimes can dictate that.
- 1:25:39Speaker 6: You know, you fall behind. 14, 17, 21 points, it's
- 1:25:42Speaker 6: a little more difficult to stay committed to the run
- 1:25:46Speaker 6: as much as we have been the last couple years.
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Our colleague and friend Roger Wallace asked Sark about,
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: even with all the attention, and rightly so, with Colin Simmons,
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: what he's done in terms of the sack numbers and
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: things like that. He said if it wasn't for that,
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: Raheem Biles would probably be drawing all the attention with
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: everything he's done against the run, against the pass. And
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: Sark had kind of almost like a triple crown reference
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: in describing what Raheem Biles has brought to this team.
- 1:26:17Speaker 6: Raheem is, I call him a three-level player, and I
- 1:26:20Speaker 6: might be making this term up, I don't know. I
- 1:26:22Speaker 6: keep like baseball players, I call them five-tool players. But
- 1:26:26Speaker 6: this guy can do all three things, meaning he can
- 1:26:29Speaker 6: rush the passer, and he can blitz, and he's a
- 1:26:32Speaker 6: problem when he's attacking the quarterback. He can play off
- 1:26:36Speaker 6: the ball linebacker and is a tackling machine. His instincts
- 1:26:40Speaker 6: show up and he can get people on the ground.
- 1:26:42Speaker 6: but he's also tremendous in pass coverage. He's a former
- 1:26:45Speaker 6: DB in high school, and so his ability to play
- 1:26:48Speaker 6: in pass coverage, and so you look at him at
- 1:26:50Speaker 6: all three levels of the defense, he can have an
- 1:26:52Speaker 6: impact on the game, and he surely has for us.
- 1:26:55Speaker 6: He's a dynamic player. We've touched on his ability, his
- 1:26:58Speaker 6: knack for creating turnovers and punching the ball out and
- 1:27:02Speaker 6: getting interceptions, and so I think all of that add
- 1:27:04Speaker 6: up to this guy's a really versatile player that it's
- 1:27:07Speaker 6: hard to take him off the field because when he's
- 1:27:09Speaker 6: out there, generally good things happen.
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: Sark was asked about what stood out to him during
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: the bye week in their self-scout. In other words, the
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: evaluation of everything that they have done, both good and
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: not good.
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: And how much did he also.
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: keep track of everything that was going on outside and
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: around college football in the SEC, and how much did
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: he follow closely what was going on there?
- 1:27:39Speaker 6: Hey, the penalties, I really dug into that. Why did
- 1:27:42Speaker 6: those start to occur? You know, they started to rear
- 1:27:44Speaker 6: their ugly head, and we hadn't been that way for
- 1:27:47Speaker 6: the first couple weeks. I think two was drilling down
- 1:27:50Speaker 6: into why were some of those inconsistencies occurring offensively and
- 1:27:56Speaker 6: how do we rectify that and clean that up? And three,
- 1:27:59Speaker 6: trying to identify what are the players do well and
- 1:28:04Speaker 6: ensuring that I'm putting our players in the best position
- 1:28:07Speaker 6: to be successful so that they can lean into and
- 1:28:09Speaker 6: gain confidence as we grow and go. So that was
- 1:28:12Speaker 6: some of the stuff that we did there. As far
- 1:28:15Speaker 6: as football this weekend, it was like, this conference is amazing.
- 1:28:20Speaker 6: And you just watch the games and you watch the environments.
- 1:28:25Speaker 6: One of the best games of this weekend, if not
- 1:28:28Speaker 6: the best game, was Kentucky at South Carolina. And I
- 1:28:31Speaker 6: have a ton of respect for Coach Beamer and like,
- 1:28:37Speaker 6: the playmaking that they have on that team. And next
- 1:28:39Speaker 6: thing you know, like, the grit of Kentucky. to come
- 1:28:43Speaker 6: all the way back and then to go for two
- 1:28:45Speaker 6: and go for the win. That's what this league is.
- 1:28:49Speaker 6: And then obviously what Missouri was able to do with
- 1:28:53Speaker 6: Eli and here comes Florida who looked unbeatable. And you
- 1:28:58Speaker 6: go into Missouri and it's like wham, wham, wham. And
- 1:29:02Speaker 6: so I think it just reminds you of what this
- 1:29:05Speaker 6: league is all about. And you better strap it up
- 1:29:08Speaker 6: every week. And it's easy to say, I've said this
- 1:29:10Speaker 6: a lot, you got to be physically tough in this league.
- 1:29:14Speaker 6: You got to be mentally tough in this league because
- 1:29:16Speaker 6: you have to get right back to it each Monday
- 1:29:19Speaker 6: and you've got to wipe the slate clean and you've
- 1:29:22Speaker 6: got to get back to what you believe in and
- 1:29:25Speaker 6: prepare and practice mentally and physically ready for another war
- 1:29:29Speaker 6: come Saturday. And like, we're about to start an eight
- 1:29:32Speaker 6: game stretch in the Southeastern Conference, which looks daunting. But
- 1:29:38Speaker 6: all I know is like, we're just focused on this
- 1:29:40Speaker 6: game because I know this game requires all of our attention.
- 1:29:44Speaker 6: And then the next week will be that way. And
- 1:29:45Speaker 6: the next week, like you have to pour everything into
- 1:29:48Speaker 6: that one game. And you don't have to, you almost
- 1:29:51Speaker 6: have to treat them like playoff games. I mean, that's
- 1:29:53Speaker 6: how much energy you have to expend on each game.
- 1:29:56Speaker 6: If you want to try to be successful.
- 1:29:57Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: Next he was asked about this month of October. And
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: is this about as daunting as it gets?
- 1:30:09Speaker 6: I know it's going to be challenging. You guys would
- 1:30:13Speaker 6: probably be better served to rank it of where it sits.
- 1:30:18Speaker 6: I don't have enough knowledge of the history of it all.
- 1:30:23Speaker 6: I know it's challenging, but that's what this league is,
- 1:30:26Speaker 6: you know, and I'll be honest with you. I don't
- 1:30:29Speaker 6: know if our guys would want it any other way.
- 1:30:32Speaker 6: They love these games. They love the competitive spirit of
- 1:30:34Speaker 6: the games. They love the environments of these games. You know,
- 1:30:39Speaker 6: we'll play Saturday in Dallas, and it'll be a heck
- 1:30:42Speaker 6: of a game. Then we get to come home again.
- 1:30:46Speaker 6: We hadn't been home here in a little while after
- 1:30:48Speaker 6: being on the road, having a bye, being in Dallas.
- 1:30:50Speaker 6: So it's going to be a month since we've been home.
- 1:30:53Speaker 6: And we get three straight at home. So we're going
- 1:30:54Speaker 6: to welcome the friendly confines of DKR. And then more
- 1:30:58Speaker 6: challenges will present themselves. uh, through it all, um, you know,
- 1:31:03Speaker 6: this is what it, this is the life in the sec,
- 1:31:06Speaker 6: you know, and, and I could sit here and complain
- 1:31:08Speaker 6: about it or I can embrace it, which is kind
- 1:31:10Speaker 6: of what we've done and say, wouldn't want any of
- 1:31:12Speaker 6: the way let's go to work, you know, and let's, let's,
- 1:31:14Speaker 6: but again, it all starts this weekend, right. Of what
- 1:31:17Speaker 6: are we doing this weekend? Getting ready for this Oklahoma
- 1:31:19Speaker 6: team who, um, is very talented and, and, and, and
- 1:31:24Speaker 6: tough and hard-nosed and all the things that you would imagine,
- 1:31:27Speaker 6: you know, they got all the right ingredients.
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: Sark mentioned at the start of the news conference about
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: how humbling it was to be the head coach in
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: this game and overall at the University of Texas. So
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: he was asked about what are the day-to-day humbling experiences
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: of being the head coach of Texas?
- 1:31:45Speaker 6: I don't know if everybody knows this. You know, my
- 1:31:49Speaker 6: office is in the south end zone. And so when
- 1:31:52Speaker 6: I park and walk in to our facility. And when
- 1:31:56Speaker 6: I get to my office and I opened my shades,
- 1:31:58Speaker 6: I mean, I look in DKR every day and that's
- 1:32:03Speaker 6: what's out my window. And that's, that's what I see
- 1:32:05Speaker 6: every single day. And so I think I get a
- 1:32:08Speaker 6: constant reminder of the support we get from our fans of,
- 1:32:14Speaker 6: of how special DKR is. But beyond that, it's the
- 1:32:19Speaker 6: support that we get from our fans, our donors, our students, um,
- 1:32:24Speaker 6: I think about a lot of the great players that
- 1:32:25Speaker 6: have ran out of that tunnel, that have taken that field,
- 1:32:27Speaker 6: that have played on that field. And so that's kind
- 1:32:31Speaker 6: of the reminder I get on a regular basis of like,
- 1:32:34Speaker 6: there it is. And this is, you know, we have
- 1:32:36Speaker 6: a lot to uphold here. And again, I don't, there's
- 1:32:41Speaker 6: not a dad. I take it lightly. I believe me.
- 1:32:43Speaker 6: Like it's, there's a responsibility that comes with the job.
- 1:32:46Speaker 6: I have a lot of fun doing my job. I
- 1:32:48Speaker 6: wouldn't want any other job in the world. I love
- 1:32:50Speaker 6: every second of what I get to do, but I
- 1:32:53Speaker 6: do get a reminder of the responsibility that this job
- 1:32:56Speaker 6: entails that I have for Longhorn Nation. And when I
- 1:33:01Speaker 6: say Longhorn Nation, ex-players, ex-coaches, the fans, our students, our administration,
- 1:33:07Speaker 6: a lot of people are counting on us to do
- 1:33:11Speaker 6: our job really well.
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: And finally, one more from Sark was asked about, does
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: he talk with Nick Saban much or communicate with him
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: that much since Saban was his boss for a while?
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: Does he lean on him about handling being number one
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: now for weeks in a row and the expectations that
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: go along with that?
- 1:33:29Speaker 6: I do, but again, I feel like I took pretty
- 1:33:32Speaker 6: good notes when I was there, you know? He doesn't
- 1:33:36Speaker 6: talk about it. It's irrelevant, you know? And we don't either,
- 1:33:40Speaker 6: you know? I mean... Ask the players how many times
- 1:33:43Speaker 6: I brought it up the last two weeks.
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: I haven't.
- 1:33:46Speaker 6: We don't talk about it. We focus on what we
- 1:33:49Speaker 6: need to do this week. Because if we don't handle
- 1:33:51Speaker 6: what we need to do this week, we won't be
- 1:33:53Speaker 6: number one next week. So control what we can control.
- 1:33:56Speaker 6: Let's focus on that. I don't have a vote. We're
- 1:33:59Speaker 6: not part of the AP. So it really doesn't matter
- 1:34:02Speaker 6: what the opinions of others are. What matters is what
- 1:34:05Speaker 6: are we doing this week and how are we going
- 1:34:06Speaker 6: to play this week and are we putting forth the
- 1:34:08Speaker 6: right ideas. type of energy and effort towards being successful
- 1:34:12Speaker 6: this week. And so that's been, that was kind of
- 1:34:15Speaker 6: a common theme that he had there. He was great
- 1:34:18Speaker 6: at reminding the teams of what they weren't good at.
- 1:34:21Speaker 6: I can tell you that. And we're not much different.
- 1:34:24Speaker 6: You know, like I said, every Monday we come in,
- 1:34:27Speaker 6: it's good, bad and ugly. And I'm going to point
- 1:34:29Speaker 6: out the things we do well in a game or
- 1:34:31Speaker 6: in a practice, but I'm surely going to point out
- 1:34:33Speaker 6: the things that we're not doing well. And then, but
- 1:34:35Speaker 6: I'm also going to give them an avenue for how
- 1:34:37Speaker 6: we're going to fix it. And I thought that was
- 1:34:39Speaker 6: a great trade of co-saving as well.
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: So there it is from SART.
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: By the way, one other Texas football note, the start
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: time for the game against Florida has been announced. We
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: knew it was going to be either 11 a.m. or noon.
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: And the answer is 11 a.m. So on the 17th,
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: a week from this Saturday, the home game against Florida
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: Gators will be having 11 a.m. kickoff. Our coverage will
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: begin at 7 o'clock in the morning there with the
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: 3rd and Longhorn podcast preview. at 7 and Longhorn's game
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: day at 8. And then at 10 o'clock, the network pregame,
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: the kickoff at 11. That's Texas and Florida. Of course,
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: this Saturday, it's a 2.30 kickoff here on the zone.
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: All right. The Cleveland Guardians have taken a 2-0 lead
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: on the Chicago White Sox. There were two out, two on.
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: Pitching change was made for Will Venable. He brought in
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: left-hander Sean Newcomb. They intentionally walked a batter. It loaded
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: the bases and had him facing Nathaniel Lowe, even though
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: Lowe was four for seven so far in the series. Well,
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: Lowe hit a high chopper that, quite frankly, should have
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: ended the inning. In fact, the pitcher, Newcomb, fielded it.
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: But he rushed the throw, and as a left-hander, he
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: hooked it, slung it sideways for a throwing error, allowed
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: two runs to score, and then he was able to
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: get out of the inning after that. But they're now
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: on the top of the second inning in Cleveland with
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: the Guardians leading the White Sox 2-0.
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: To nothing.
- 1:36:02Speaker 3: Craig, what he yelled into that glove, we could not
- 1:36:04Speaker 3: repeat on the radio.
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: Yeah, you could tell he wasn't happy with that.
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: All right, more on the Cowboys and Texans next on
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:36:12Speaker 7: Share it by using the talkback feature on the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: Update on that American League Division Series game two in Cleveland.
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: They're going to the bottom of the second inning at
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: Progressive Field. And... The Guardians holding that 2-0 lead scoring
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: those two unearned runs on the throwing.
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: Error by Sean Newcomb of the White Sox.
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: They lead Chicago 2-0 as they go to the bottom
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: of the second there astride Lake Erie. The Cowboys returned
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: home from Houston victorious, getting their record to 2-2 with
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: that come-from-behind 34-30 win over the Texans yesterday afternoon that
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: you heard on both.
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: 98.1 FM KVET.
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: The home of Austin's all-time country favorites, the Longhorns, excuse me,
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: the Cowboys broadcast with Brad Cham and Babe Laufenberg. And
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: then here on The Zone, the unhappy news at the
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: end of Report, the Texans broadcast with Mark Vandermeer and
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: Andre Ware.
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: That happened. here on the zone.
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: After the game, Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach, was
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: asked about Dak Prescott overcoming some struggles in the first
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: half to really turn it on and lead those fourth
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: quarter drives to victory. Knew it would be.
- 1:37:28Speaker 5: Yeah, I knew it would be.
- 1:37:29Speaker 8: Again, I've told you guys all week, you know, Will
- 1:37:31Speaker 8: Anderson will be getting a Pro Bowl vote from me.
- 1:37:33Speaker 5: He's an elite player.
- 1:37:35Speaker 8: He does more than just wreak havoc on quarterbacks. He
- 1:37:38Speaker 8: sniffs out arounds. He blocks field goals. Guy's an elite player.
- 1:37:44Speaker 5: But Dak.
- 1:37:46Speaker 8: What makes Dak so special is the makeup of the
- 1:37:47Speaker 8: young man and the competitor that he is and the
- 1:37:49Speaker 8: focus and just.
- 1:37:53Speaker 5: Overall i thought he was flawless in the second.
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: Half okay uh did he make some big halftime speech
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: to get it turned around and what adjustments.
- 1:38:01Speaker 8: Did they make we knew we get the ball first
- 1:38:02Speaker 8: offensively made some adjustments like i said i wasn't surprised
- 1:38:06Speaker 8: one of the things that you know doing the practice
- 1:38:08Speaker 8: calling of games that i do todd you know there's
- 1:38:10Speaker 8: a lot of three and outs when you do these
- 1:38:12Speaker 8: other games from other teams like oh another three and
- 1:38:15Speaker 8: out oh another three and out it's good defense um
- 1:38:18Speaker 8: but we knew we got to would get the ball
- 1:38:19Speaker 8: first and um you know nice return to get it
- 1:38:22Speaker 8: started and I just felt really good about the changes
- 1:38:25Speaker 8: and the adjustments we made in the second half on offense.
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: Did he feel good about the defensive performance his team delivered?
- 1:38:30Speaker 8: You know, I thought they, again, I said it. this
- 1:38:33Speaker 8: week on Tuesday, whenever we talked, they're getting better. You know,
- 1:38:37Speaker 8: they really are. They're getting better. And, uh, I thought
- 1:38:39Speaker 8: that third down stuff was really good. Um, and what
- 1:38:42Speaker 8: we held them three of three of 10 on third down, uh,
- 1:38:45Speaker 8: you know, we gave up a couple of big plays.
- 1:38:46Speaker 8: I mean, the big play to Nico Collins early in
- 1:38:48Speaker 8: the first play of the game, actually, uh, that is
- 1:38:51Speaker 8: what it is. But I thought, again, we held him
- 1:38:52Speaker 8: a 3.3 yards, um, rushing. But again, we need to
- 1:38:56Speaker 8: take away the guys that we say we're going to
- 1:38:58Speaker 8: take away. And we knew Nico Collins was coming back.
- 1:39:01Speaker 8: We knew he was a great player. and we didn't
- 1:39:04Speaker 8: do a good enough job on him. But again, you
- 1:39:08Speaker 8: see it coming. You see these guys getting better, and
- 1:39:12Speaker 8: Quinn and Williams, some of the pass rush, we really
- 1:39:15Speaker 8: wreaked havoc on C.J. Stroud late in the game there
- 1:39:18Speaker 8: and kind of made him uncomfortable, which was good. First half,
- 1:39:21Speaker 8: not quite as much, but very proud of those guys.
- 1:39:24Speaker 8: They're getting a lot better.
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: Well, late in the game, the Texans used up their
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: timeouts when the Cowboys hit the ball just to try
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: to save them some time to get it back and
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: shoddy was asked if that timeout usage changed what the
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: cowboys wanted to do strategy wise no not.
- 1:39:40Speaker 8: Really um you just kind of you know you expect
- 1:39:43Speaker 8: that they're gonna you know try to use them to
- 1:39:44Speaker 8: save times i think it shows that they respect their
- 1:39:47Speaker 8: offense and they know um that we're capable of putting
- 1:39:51Speaker 8: up points uh in a hurry um but again i
- 1:39:54Speaker 8: can't say enough about our guys and the grit the
- 1:39:57Speaker 8: competitive spirit you know we talked about that too You know,
- 1:39:59Speaker 8: what motivates this team is our competitive spirit and love
- 1:40:02Speaker 8: for one another.
- 1:40:02Speaker 5: And I think that was on display all day today.
- 1:40:05Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: Coaches generally shy away from the term must win. But
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: in terms of the context of the season, was it
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: a must win?
- 1:40:15Speaker 8: I wanted this game. I don't think we needed this game.
- 1:40:17Speaker 8: You know, Rio doesn't define us as a football team,
- 1:40:20Speaker 8: as a coaching staff. You know, I think I was
- 1:40:23Speaker 8: very upfront and honest with that.
- 1:40:25Speaker 5: But I wanted this game.
- 1:40:26Speaker 4: Why?
- 1:40:27Speaker 8: Because these guys came back off a 10-hour trip. The Ravens,
- 1:40:30Speaker 8: I think, played at home today. We played on the road.
- 1:40:32Speaker 8: We played Thursday night. We'll play anybody, anywhere, and we're
- 1:40:36Speaker 8: looking forward to that. But Rio had nothing to do
- 1:40:38Speaker 8: with this game. This game stood by itself.
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: Okay, play anybody, anywhere. That means quick turnaround four days
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: later to play Tampa Bay. So does the win make
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: the turnaround easier?
- 1:40:48Speaker 8: I think, again, it drives home the big point that
- 1:40:51Speaker 8: we were making, that if we stay consistent in our preparation,
- 1:40:55Speaker 8: if we stay consistent in our belief that we're going
- 1:40:57Speaker 8: to find ways to win these games... We talked about
- 1:41:00Speaker 8: this the other day. I think Todd asked me about it. Like,
- 1:41:01Speaker 8: how do you learn how to finish? Well, the best
- 1:41:04Speaker 8: way to do it is to do it. And we
- 1:41:05Speaker 8: did that tonight. But, you know, we know how to
- 1:41:10Speaker 8: do these short weeks where the Cowboys, they put us
- 1:41:12Speaker 8: on short weeks a lot and be a quick trip
- 1:41:15Speaker 8: back to Dallas. We'll enjoy tonight and we'll be back
- 1:41:18Speaker 8: at it bright and early tomorrow morning, getting ready for
- 1:41:19Speaker 8: the books.
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: Which means today, which means we'll probably hear some more
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: from Shadi tomorrow, the regular weekly press conference. Now, D'Amico
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: Ryan's having a deal with the pieces of his team
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: now at 0-4. How do the Texans overcome an 0-4 start?
- 1:41:34Speaker 4: You stick together and you keep going. That's what it is.
- 1:41:38Speaker 4: All these games, we've been in these games. We just
- 1:41:40Speaker 4: got to find a way to finish these games. That's
- 1:41:42Speaker 4: what it is. It's 0-4. That's our record. That's what
- 1:41:45Speaker 4: it says, who we are right now. But how do
- 1:41:47Speaker 4: you come out of it? It's what I told our guys.
- 1:41:50Speaker 4: You stick together. There's no pointing fingers, no blaming, like, hey,
- 1:41:54Speaker 4: you look within yourself, D'Amico, what do you have to
- 1:41:56Speaker 4: do better to get it corrected? And that's where I
- 1:41:59Speaker 4: start with myself, like, how can I get it all corrected?
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: Next, he was asked if the success they had in
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: 2025 would carry over into this season, which has not
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: gotten off to the start they wanted.
- 1:42:13Speaker 4: You have to ask the guys individually on that, but
- 1:42:17Speaker 4: for me, it's every year you start over, right?
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: And for me, I Never.
- 1:42:22Speaker 4: 2025 was 2025. It's a shame we're sitting here talking
- 1:42:27Speaker 4: about that right now, but for us, 2026, what do
- 1:42:30Speaker 4: we do about it right now? That's my mindset. That's
- 1:42:33Speaker 4: the mindset of our players.
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: So the explosive pass plays have been a problem. Clearly
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: they were a problem yesterday. How can they keep that
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: from happening? How is it that they continue to happen?
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: We'll look at the film and see, all right, what.
- 1:42:50Speaker 4: Really happened on the explosive plays but there is no
- 1:42:54Speaker 4: coverage where we designed to leave guys open that's that's
- 1:42:57Speaker 4: not a coverage all right so we got to do
- 1:42:59Speaker 4: a better job there and you know they got they
- 1:43:02Speaker 4: made a made a play uh i thought it was
- 1:43:04Speaker 4: george made a really big play there creating explosive that's
- 1:43:08Speaker 4: a contested play right there kamari is battling a contested
- 1:43:11Speaker 4: play that they made on us right but we got
- 1:43:13Speaker 4: to find a way to be on the other side
- 1:43:16Speaker 4: of this, find a way to get the ball out,
- 1:43:18Speaker 4: find a way to get the quarterback down.
- 1:43:19Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: And then finally, when a team starts 0-4, folks are
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: expecting or thinking there could well be changes.
- 1:43:27Speaker 2: What changes might he consider? Whatever.
- 1:43:29Speaker 4: I mean, it's my job as the leader of this
- 1:43:31Speaker 4: football team to do whatever it takes for us to
- 1:43:35Speaker 4: turn this thing around.
- 1:43:36Speaker 7: What was your message to your team postgame, and was
- 1:43:38Speaker 7: it notably different from recent weeks now that it's 0-4?
- 1:43:42Speaker 4: That's the same message. Like the only people that can
- 1:43:45Speaker 4: do anything about the 0 and 4 start are the
- 1:43:48Speaker 4: guys in that locker room. Coaches, players, we all have
- 1:43:51Speaker 4: to stick together. It's easy when you're in this spot to,
- 1:43:55Speaker 4: you know, I say point fingers or blame this person
- 1:43:57Speaker 4: or that person, but that doesn't solve anything. Like when
- 1:44:00Speaker 4: things get hard, adversity hits, you climb your way through
- 1:44:05Speaker 4: it by sticking together. And that's the only way I know.
- 1:44:08Speaker 4: Been there, done it. That's the only way I know.
- 1:44:10Speaker 4: And that's what we'll keep working. We'll get back to
- 1:44:12Speaker 4: the drawing board, keep working. But, you know, a lot
- 1:44:15Speaker 4: of guys did a lot of good things today. A
- 1:44:18Speaker 4: lot of good things. And my message is it hurts
- 1:44:21Speaker 4: me that I can't go in and celebrate those positives
- 1:44:25Speaker 4: that a lot of guys showed today on the field
- 1:44:29Speaker 4: for us.
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: So there it is. And so the Texans try to
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: battle back. next week and try to get that first
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: win of the season. And they got a shot, even
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: though it's a road game, it's at Tennessee. Because the
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: Titans have obviously had their struggles. So that'll be coming
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: up on next Sunday at noon. We'll be back to
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: wrap up today's edition of the program on 13 Under
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: the Zone.
