- 0:05Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:09Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Blazarre and Lazarn. Hello, everybody nailed it, Joined as always
- 0:15Speaker 2: by our Bara.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex bars. Do you doubt
- 0:23Speaker 1: them being able to replicate any of what they did? Evan?
- 0:25Speaker 1: Can they do it thirteen more times? Twelve more times? Exactly?
- 0:29Speaker 1: You know, it's still a young team. There's gonna be
- 0:31Speaker 1: some consistency issues, but they haven't shown that kind of
- 0:34Speaker 1: level for a few years now, and they've now shown
- 0:36Speaker 1: it two weeks in a row. They played the game
- 0:39Speaker 1: that they want to play and they won. That's a
- 0:42Speaker 1: very encouraging sign for the long Termans Well. Patriots just
- 0:48Speaker 1: keep rolling.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Alex up three in a row. Uh. Dare I say
- 0:52Speaker 2: first place? I whisper at first place.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Called the winning street in the AFC East. Uh.
- 0:57Speaker 2: The Patriots are rolling and they it is called the
- 1:00Speaker 2: winning streak. But as of right now, you know, it
- 1:04Speaker 2: is week six of the season. We're all excited, we're
- 1:08Speaker 2: all encouraged by the things that we've seen. I think
- 1:11Speaker 2: that the people that are getting their flowers this week
- 1:15Speaker 2: deserve to get their flowers Mike Rabel, Drake May, Josh
- 1:18Speaker 2: McDaniel's doing a great job as well on the offensive
- 1:22Speaker 2: side of the ball. We're going to talk all about it.
- 1:24Speaker 2: We're going to break down this Saints game. We're gonna
- 1:26Speaker 2: talk some big picture things because I think one of
- 1:29Speaker 2: the most encouraging things Alex about this entire situation with
- 1:34Speaker 2: the Patriots and this winning streak and the fact that
- 1:36Speaker 2: they're winning games again and they're performing well and they're
- 1:39Speaker 2: four and two, is that we can actually really dive
- 1:43Speaker 2: into some of these minutias and talk about not that
- 1:48Speaker 2: they're across the board in a place where they're gonna
- 1:51Speaker 2: win four games, right where we can actually talk about
- 1:54Speaker 2: this like these are the things they need to improve on,
- 1:58Speaker 2: because if they do, and we're really going to be
- 2:01Speaker 2: able to start talking about playoffs and matchups and seating
- 2:05Speaker 2: and all that different type of stuff that we just
- 2:07Speaker 2: aren't used to talking about around here the last couple
- 2:10Speaker 2: of years. So that's all really exciting. And when we
- 2:14Speaker 2: talk about even the negatives or the things that didn't
- 2:17Speaker 2: go so well in this game, and the good, the bad,
- 2:18Speaker 2: and the stuff that gets you beat, it's not you
- 2:23Speaker 2: want to talk about it because it seems worth it,
- 2:26Speaker 2: like it seems worth trying to fix these things and
- 2:28Speaker 2: worth trying to get through these things and figure out
- 2:33Speaker 2: how to make this football team even better than the
- 2:36Speaker 2: way that it has performed and the way that this
- 2:38Speaker 2: schedule sets up for them. It's really I understand that
- 2:44Speaker 2: the Patriots are not necessarily yet in a position to
- 2:47Speaker 2: overlook opponents and things like that, But Tennessee and Cleveland
- 2:51Speaker 2: and back to back weeks. I mean, you're looking at
- 2:54Speaker 2: six and two if you just take care of business.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Now they got to take care of business. But you're
- 2:58Speaker 2: looking at six and two if you I just wanted
- 3:01Speaker 2: to start.
- 3:01Speaker 1: A big picture done that point. It goes back to
- 3:04Speaker 1: one of the first things Mike Rabel said when he
- 3:06Speaker 1: got here back in January. It's one of my favorite
- 3:09Speaker 1: quotes that he's given. You know, talking about building up
- 3:12Speaker 1: the program and what will the hallmarks be, and said there,
- 3:15Speaker 1: you know, there's a handful of them, but the place
- 3:18Speaker 1: to start. You're gonna be good enough to take advantage
- 3:19Speaker 1: of bad football. And I said this back in May
- 3:23Speaker 1: when the schedule came out. If they simply take care
- 3:26Speaker 1: of take advantage of bad football, and just do that
- 3:29Speaker 1: is the baseline, and they don't even get beyond that.
- 3:33Speaker 1: They're going to be in the playoff mix and potentially
- 3:35Speaker 1: make the playoffs. And that's exactly what they're doing. So
- 3:38Speaker 1: vrabel through six weeks and there's still time to go.
- 3:40Speaker 1: But like they've followed through on that.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Box check box checked. Absolutely, yeah, And that's highly encouraging.
- 3:47Speaker 2: And that's a baseline that in this league, and when
- 3:50Speaker 2: you eight or nine games and then you start stealing
- 3:53Speaker 2: a game in Buffalo that people are picked against you,
- 3:55Speaker 2: and you know some other games along the way here
- 3:58Speaker 2: where it might be more coin flippy or maybe even
- 4:01Speaker 2: favor I'll tell you the opponent.
- 4:03Speaker 1: We not to get too far ahead, but like so
- 4:06Speaker 1: I've had this this take that I don't think I'm
- 4:10Speaker 1: talking to somebody o the day and they're like, well,
- 4:12Speaker 1: if if the Bills aren't as good as we thought
- 4:15Speaker 1: and the Eagles aren't as good as we thought? Right,
- 4:17Speaker 1: the Chiefs stumbled out of gatele like, who are the
- 4:19Speaker 1: elite teams in the NFL? Who are the best teams?
- 4:23Speaker 1: And I still think it's some of those teams, the Eagles,
- 4:26Speaker 1: the Bills, right, you know, the Ravens. It's weird because
- 4:28Speaker 1: the Mars hurt, but they're just what we're used to being.
- 4:33Speaker 1: The best teams in the NFL, the teams that can
- 4:35Speaker 1: go out there and blow doors any given week. Like,
- 4:38Speaker 1: I just don't think that team exists this year, which
- 4:41Speaker 1: might be a good thing for the league. It makes it,
- 4:43Speaker 1: you know, parody's insane. That being said, you know who
- 4:46Speaker 1: I would put in that best teams in the league
- 4:48Speaker 1: tier right now? Tampa Dampa might be you know, I
- 4:53Speaker 1: don't know how you feel about them. Tampa is one
- 4:55Speaker 1: of the best teams in this league. Agreed through a
- 4:58Speaker 1: month and a half, I agreed. Now it'll be a
- 5:00Speaker 1: good game in a couple of weeks.
- 5:02Speaker 2: I think one of the elements of being six weeks
- 5:04Speaker 2: into the season and having all you know, somery trying
- 5:07Speaker 2: to draw some of these conclusions. I do think some
- 5:10Speaker 2: of the quote unquote best teams in the league will
- 5:14Speaker 2: level off and you know, sort of get back to
- 5:18Speaker 2: what we're used to see. Reilly, Kansas City's offense is
- 5:22Speaker 2: really starting to come on. Detroit, you know, Buffalo, like
- 5:28Speaker 2: I think at the end of the day, and I
- 5:30Speaker 2: don't know about Baltimore, they might have put themselves in
- 5:32Speaker 2: too big of a hole.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Yeah, Baltimore's a weird one.
- 5:34Speaker 2: But all of the teams that I just mentioned, I
- 5:37Speaker 2: do feel like we are going to wake up in January,
- 5:41Speaker 2: in week eighteen or maybe wild Card weekend, and it's
- 5:44Speaker 2: going to be all of the usual suspects, you know,
- 5:48Speaker 2: plus maybe like every year you know, a few new
- 5:51Speaker 2: teams like the Patriots. You know that that might be
- 5:54Speaker 2: in there. But at the same time, I do feel
- 5:57Speaker 2: like those upper echellent teams, especially when you look at
- 6:03Speaker 2: some of the efficiency metrics you know, EPA, DVA things
- 6:06Speaker 2: like that, like Kansas City is what like four and two,
- 6:08Speaker 2: three and two something like that. Two. Yeah, but their record,
- 6:12Speaker 2: their record is not like they're playing a lot better
- 6:15Speaker 2: than their record would suggest. So there I think going
- 6:18Speaker 2: to go on a run here at some point. I
- 6:21Speaker 2: do still feel like, and I know that right now
- 6:24Speaker 2: they've lost two games in a row and you're gonna
- 6:26Speaker 2: probably take many victory laps on the Buffalo Bills. I
- 6:29Speaker 2: still think the Bills are gonna are gonna be a
- 6:33Speaker 2: problem in the AFC. I think they're gonna be heard
- 6:35Speaker 2: from at some point in the AFC. Okay, so I'm
- 6:39Speaker 2: just saying I still think the teams that we thought
- 6:42Speaker 2: were going to be good. Once we start to get
- 6:44Speaker 2: into the real meat of the season, I think that
- 6:47Speaker 2: they're going to come out to the other side.
- 6:49Speaker 1: I guess where I'm at relatively speaking. Yes, I agree
- 6:54Speaker 1: with you on the Bills. They're one of the best
- 6:55Speaker 1: teams the AFC. Are they that's.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Big of you. I know that was probably hard for
- 7:00Speaker 2: you to say.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Are they as good as they were last year?
- 7:05Speaker 2: I don't know, but like they have no, I don't
- 7:09Speaker 2: know that. Like they have maybe one of the best quarterbacks,
- 7:13Speaker 2: if not the best quarterback in the NFL. Their defense
- 7:17Speaker 2: has not been fully healthy, so I don't know if
- 7:20Speaker 2: they're gonna get Matt Milano back permanently because he's just
- 7:24Speaker 2: seems like he's injured all the time now. So I
- 7:27Speaker 2: don't know about that. But at Oliver just came back
- 7:29Speaker 2: this past week. I just I like Tampa. I think
- 7:34Speaker 2: Tampa's going to be a force this year. I think
- 7:36Speaker 2: they're a great team. Baker's playing out of his mind,
- 7:40Speaker 2: no doubt about that. I still think these other teams
- 7:43Speaker 2: that have been in the mix and been in the
- 7:45Speaker 2: in the in the dance, so to speak. Over the
- 7:47Speaker 2: last couple of years are still going to be there
- 7:49Speaker 2: in the end.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I think they're gonna be there. But they're any of
- 7:52Speaker 1: those teams. I think Buffalo, I think Kansas City. It's
- 7:56Speaker 1: really those two because Baltimore and Cincinnati you're dealing with
- 7:58Speaker 1: quarterback injuries right in the AFC. I don't think either
- 8:03Speaker 1: of those teams are as good as they were. And
- 8:04Speaker 1: I think some of it, I think on Buffalo's side,
- 8:08Speaker 1: and I'm not I know, there's the quote going around
- 8:11Speaker 1: about Josh Allen and you know him saying, you know,
- 8:13Speaker 1: I'm more than just a football player, and his really shit.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Like I'm not going to pick on the guy for
- 8:17Speaker 1: that when I say this, but I do think there's
- 8:20Speaker 1: a level of complacency in Buffalo that's more about the
- 8:23Speaker 1: coaching staff than the players. You know, I that was
- 8:27Speaker 1: not a well coach game the other night.
- 8:29Speaker 2: I would relax on taking victory laps on the Bills.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Not a victory lap. The Bills are McDermott, the Bills are.
- 8:36Speaker 2: I mean I think people just in general, like, I
- 8:38Speaker 2: think people are getting a little bit over it, and
- 8:41Speaker 2: even in Buffalo, Like if I thought they're four and two,
- 8:44Speaker 2: they're not. They're not one in.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Five, I thought the Bills were dead in the water.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Don't you think I'd come on here and say it.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Yeah, But I also like, I feel I feel like
- 8:52Speaker 2: we've heard this a lot all week long because of
- 8:55Speaker 2: the Patriots overtaking the Bills in the division for now
- 8:58Speaker 2: and the Bills are lost to eight games, And I'm
- 9:01Speaker 2: even seeing it like from Bill's people like, I'm not
- 9:03Speaker 2: just talking about the.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Bills fans sound like me. Yeah, I find myself agree
- 9:07Speaker 1: with the Bills fans. Here's my point though, let me so,
- 9:10Speaker 1: I just I've been critical of mcdert. So what people
- 9:14Speaker 1: think is my disdain for Josh Allen really is more
- 9:17Speaker 1: about Sean McDermott, And I just don't think he what
- 9:21Speaker 1: I've said this, like, do I somebody called him a
- 9:24Speaker 1: sports Somebody asked me the other day do I think
- 9:25Speaker 1: Josh Allen can win a Super Bowl? Yes? I can, Yes,
- 9:28Speaker 1: I do. Do I think he can win one with McDermott,
- 9:30Speaker 1: I don't know. And I think he's getting exposed a
- 9:33Speaker 1: little bit. I think in Kansas City the issue is
- 9:35Speaker 1: more age, and you know, the age catching up with
- 9:38Speaker 1: the roster. Like Travis Kelsey's still playing well, but he's
- 9:41Speaker 1: not what he was. Chris Jones not playing is still
- 9:43Speaker 1: playing well, but he's not what he was. And you
- 9:46Speaker 1: know their receiver rooms and other issues as well on
- 9:48Speaker 1: top of that. So I still think those teams are good,
- 9:51Speaker 1: but they were, along with the Ravens and Bengals, who
- 9:54Speaker 1: again are in a different category here. I think they
- 9:57Speaker 1: were so far ahead of the pack in the A
- 10:00Speaker 1: the last couple of years, and I think they each
- 10:03Speaker 1: have their own flaws that are being exposed to more
- 10:05Speaker 1: because whether it's the Patriots, whether it's and the Colts
- 10:09Speaker 1: kind of took a roundabout way to get there, whether
- 10:11Speaker 1: it's the Colts, whether it's the Jaguars, some of these
- 10:14Speaker 1: teams that have been down and have been rebuilding are
- 10:18Speaker 1: now sort of through the painful part of the rebuild
- 10:21Speaker 1: and aren't fully there and aren't fully caught up. And
- 10:24Speaker 1: this isn't to say the Patriots or the Colts or
- 10:26Speaker 1: any of these teams have caught the Bills or caught
- 10:28Speaker 1: the Chiefs, That's not what I'm saying. Have they narrowed
- 10:31Speaker 1: the gap as those teams start to get older in
- 10:33Speaker 1: a little you know, further away from that apex, and
- 10:35Speaker 1: they get close to the Apex. Yeah, I think they have.
- 10:38Speaker 1: And I think that's what you've seen happen here in
- 10:40Speaker 1: the last few weeks. That's what this is all indicative of,
- 10:43Speaker 1: is it's no, the AFC for the last three or
- 10:46Speaker 1: four years was two or three teams and then a
- 10:50Speaker 1: bunch of nothing, that's all it was, whereas the NFC
- 10:53Speaker 1: was this super competitive conference where it was kind of
- 10:56Speaker 1: even across the board. I think you're starting to see
- 10:58Speaker 1: that flip. And by the way, he did, flipped from
- 11:01Speaker 1: where it was ten years ago, where it was you know,
- 11:04Speaker 1: the Patriots and the Colts and and the Chargers and
- 11:07Speaker 1: the Steelers and nobody else, right, it's now come back around.
- 11:10Speaker 1: So I think you're just seeing the power balance in
- 11:13Speaker 1: the AFC shift. That's not to take a victory lap
- 11:16Speaker 1: on the Bills and say they're done. It's not to
- 11:18Speaker 1: take a victory lap on the Chiefs and say they're done,
- 11:20Speaker 1: because that's not what I think is happening. But I
- 11:23Speaker 1: think that their monopoly on the conference is certainly starting
- 11:27Speaker 1: to go away.
- 11:28Speaker 2: We'll see I still and this is the same thing
- 11:32Speaker 2: that happened, and then I want to move on to
- 11:34Speaker 2: actual Patriots stuff. No, but I think this is this
- 11:36Speaker 2: is similar to what happened last year with Minnesota, with
- 11:41Speaker 2: what's happening with Daniel Jones in Indianapolis right now. Minnesota
- 11:44Speaker 2: goes on this run with Sam Donald. Now it turns
- 11:47Speaker 2: out Sam Donald just good now. I don't know, Maybe
- 11:50Speaker 2: Daniel Jones is fixed and he's just good now too,
- 11:53Speaker 2: But it doesn't there feel there's a feel to it
- 11:56Speaker 2: in my mind of like the shoot to drop that
- 11:59Speaker 2: Daniel j One is eventually going to turn back into
- 12:01Speaker 2: DA saying that in like Minnesota had happened really late
- 12:05Speaker 2: in the season to say, im Darnold, Yeah, once they
- 12:07Speaker 2: got into like playoff caliber games week eighteen and then
- 12:10Speaker 2: you know the division or I think it was a
- 12:12Speaker 2: wildcard round, right, wildcard round of the playoffs, Like, so
- 12:16Speaker 2: maybe he makes it all the way to that point too.
- 12:19Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 12:19Speaker 1: I've been saying that he's playing pretty good football right now.
- 12:22Speaker 1: But you also, I was just thinking of like them
- 12:25Speaker 1: the first place seems off the top of my head,
- 12:27Speaker 1: like the Chargers are another team that has kind of
- 12:30Speaker 1: been down and they got Herbert and they couldn't figure
- 12:32Speaker 1: out how to maximize Herbert. But I have something.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Climated by injuries at this point, so that team, I don't.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Know that's fair. I'll even give some credit to the Broncos.
- 12:40Speaker 1: I don't trust their offense, but that defense is still
- 12:43Speaker 1: high level. So I just think that there were more,
- 12:47Speaker 1: maybe not on the Chiefs and Bills level, but how
- 12:49Speaker 1: many teams were there that you looked at it you said, well, okay,
- 12:54Speaker 1: they're not as good as the Chiefs or Bills or Ravens, right,
- 12:58Speaker 1: but if they get them on the right day, they
- 13:01Speaker 1: can make it happen. There weren't even a lot of
- 13:02Speaker 1: teams you said that about in the AFC, and I
- 13:04Speaker 1: think now there are and and it's it's starting to
- 13:07Speaker 1: dependulum starting to shift more the other way. Like I
- 13:09Speaker 1: don't know how real Jacksonville is. I don't, but they're
- 13:12Speaker 1: playing really good football right now, and I'll tip my
- 13:15Speaker 1: cap to them. And Ivy liam Cone figured something.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Now maybe it's just a little bit of I don't
- 13:22Speaker 2: know what the word is, Like I'm just wary of
- 13:26Speaker 2: saying that these teams have a chance against like Kansas City.
- 13:29Speaker 2: I just think we're on a march to Kansas City
- 13:32Speaker 2: and Buffalo and the AFC Championship game, and we're gonna
- 13:35Speaker 2: look up and at the end of January and say, oh, well,
- 13:38Speaker 2: the Colts had a nice season, Jacksonville had a nice season.
- 13:41Speaker 2: The Patriots had a nice season. But at the end
- 13:43Speaker 2: of the day, we ended up where we thought we
- 13:44Speaker 2: were gonna end.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Maybe we do. But do they cruise there because they've
- 13:47Speaker 1: cruised there the last couple of years.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Well not Buffalo, Buffalo hasn't even made it there the
- 13:50Speaker 2: last couple of years.
- 13:51Speaker 1: But yeah, well to not THEFC championship, but to meeting
- 13:54Speaker 1: each other.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe maybe I hear like.
- 13:57Speaker 1: I just I think it's it's different. And it's also like,
- 14:00Speaker 1: remember three years ago, this is where I will talk
- 14:03Speaker 1: about the division standings. Remember three years ago, it was, well,
- 14:07Speaker 1: the Dolphins got Mike McDaniel and he's a genius, and
- 14:09Speaker 1: they have all the speed and two it looks like
- 14:10Speaker 1: an MVP. And the Bills and Josh Allen they figured
- 14:14Speaker 1: out and they're a wagon. Oh and the Jets got
- 14:16Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers. The Patriots won't be able to win the
- 14:19Speaker 1: division for the next ten years. Do you remember that, Dake. Yeah,
- 14:22Speaker 1: that's not how the NFL works. You cannot project beyond
- 14:25Speaker 1: the year in the NFL, and I also just think
- 14:28Speaker 1: I'll use a little math here. At a certain point,
- 14:32Speaker 1: the ultimate PAIRD of the NFL has to regress to
- 14:35Speaker 1: the mean, and new teams have to emerge.
- 14:37Speaker 2: This is but a new teams emerging for real, and
- 14:41Speaker 2: I think that's where six weeks is probably still a
- 14:45Speaker 2: little bit too small of a sample size. There's no
- 14:48Speaker 2: doubt about it that there's new teams like the Patriots
- 14:51Speaker 2: and the Colts and the Jaguars. I'd put them in
- 14:53Speaker 2: that category two that are emerging to be frisky in
- 14:57Speaker 2: the AFBC. What are they emerging to? Are they real contenders? Don't?
- 15:01Speaker 2: I think we're too early so to say that.
- 15:03Speaker 1: What are the odds they're all the real deal? Very low?
- 15:07Speaker 1: What are the odds none of them are the real deal?
- 15:10Speaker 1: I would say, also very low. I don't think we're
- 15:12Speaker 1: going to be sitting here at the end of the
- 15:13Speaker 1: year talking about all of these teams, and again, we
- 15:16Speaker 1: want to get to the Patriots. But this would maybe
- 15:17Speaker 1: be a fun discussion for like a bye week, although
- 15:19Speaker 1: the bye week's super late and we'll know by then,
- 15:21Speaker 1: like which ones are real and which ones aren't? Might
- 15:24Speaker 1: be a fun debate. But I don't think the number zero.
- 15:27Speaker 1: I don't think it's all of them, but I do
- 15:29Speaker 1: think we're gonna get to the end of the year
- 15:30Speaker 1: and we're gonna have determined that a couple of these teams. Okay,
- 15:33Speaker 1: these teams are the real deal.
- 15:34Speaker 2: All right, let's talk Patriots. The big thing with the
- 15:38Speaker 2: Patriots coming out of this game. To me, we talk
- 15:42Speaker 2: a lot about on this show. We call them Tuesday players.
- 15:46Speaker 2: We still are not a very popular guy right now,
- 15:48Speaker 2: but it's a Michae Lombardy thing, right Tuesday players. A
- 15:52Speaker 2: game plan even that comes from yeah, early in the week,
- 15:55Speaker 2: you know, the staffs or the opponent gets into the
- 15:59Speaker 2: a beating room and they've watched the film and they say,
- 16:02Speaker 2: you know, who's what do we have to take away
- 16:04Speaker 2: this week? Who's the guy that we need to take
- 16:07Speaker 2: away this week? And the way I sort of judge
- 16:14Speaker 2: players and have they earned that respect across the league
- 16:18Speaker 2: of being an elite level player is how opponents game
- 16:23Speaker 2: plan for them. Are they players that opponents are thinking about?
- 16:27Speaker 2: You know, if it's a defensive lineman, are they getting
- 16:30Speaker 2: double teams? Are they getting slides to their way? Are
- 16:33Speaker 2: they getting chipped? If their edge rushers, are they getting
- 16:36Speaker 2: you know, safety help over the top. If it's a
- 16:38Speaker 2: wide receiver, are they getting doubled? Are they getting drawing
- 16:41Speaker 2: number one matchups? Like things like that, And so we
- 16:46Speaker 2: don't need to keep talking about Drake May in the
- 16:50Speaker 2: sense of is he taking the year two leap? Is
- 16:53Speaker 2: he a top ex quarterback in the league. He's here,
- 16:56Speaker 2: Guys like, he's here, right, So he's arrived. Okay. So
- 16:59Speaker 2: now other question that I have is what's the rest
- 17:03Speaker 2: of the league going to do about it? Because the
- 17:06Speaker 2: way that I look at, especially coming off the Saints game,
- 17:10Speaker 2: the way that I look at the way teams are
- 17:12Speaker 2: defending Drake May right now, they are not respecting Drake
- 17:17Speaker 2: May enough like they are coming into these games the Patriots,
- 17:22Speaker 2: and I put this stat out there multiple times, the
- 17:24Speaker 2: Patriots are seeing the highest rate of single high safety
- 17:28Speaker 2: coverage in the NFL.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Yeah, what third or fourth in loaded boxes in general?
- 17:32Speaker 2: Yeah, one safety up top, put eight seven eight guys
- 17:37Speaker 2: in the box. And basically, what teams are saying is
- 17:40Speaker 2: we are daring your outside receivers in your downfield passing
- 17:44Speaker 2: game to beat us. And we know that this has
- 17:46Speaker 2: been the blueprint and the book on the Patriots offense
- 17:49Speaker 2: probably going all the way back to the end of
- 17:51Speaker 2: Brady honestly, like probably like twenty nineteen, twenty twenty is
- 17:55Speaker 2: about where this pendulum started to swing in this direction.
- 17:59Speaker 2: And all Drake May has done to those coverages, you know,
- 18:03Speaker 2: whether it's Cover three, which is single high zone or
- 18:05Speaker 2: Cover one, which is single high man, all he has
- 18:08Speaker 2: done to those coverages is torch it. It's you know,
- 18:10Speaker 2: he's literally just torched it. He's has first in the
- 18:14Speaker 2: league and passing yards second in the league, and EPA
- 18:17Speaker 2: per drop back against single high safety coverage. So at
- 18:21Speaker 2: some point you would think that the league is going
- 18:24Speaker 2: to adjust and say, this is the third rated passing
- 18:28Speaker 2: offense in the NFL by EPA. We cannot treat this
- 18:32Speaker 2: like the Patriots of the last couple of years, where
- 18:35Speaker 2: it was put him in long, down in distance, stop
- 18:39Speaker 2: the run, you know, do that sort of thing. They
- 18:41Speaker 2: have nobody on the outside that you have to put
- 18:44Speaker 2: any fear into. No outside receivers are gonna scare us,
- 18:48Speaker 2: So we're just gonna crowd the line of scrimmage and
- 18:51Speaker 2: we're gonna, you know, put them into third and long.
- 18:55Speaker 2: The Patriots are too good of a passing offense to
- 18:58Speaker 2: play them that way anymore. And so now here comes
- 19:02Speaker 2: the league adjustment for Drake May. And I'm just really curious,
- 19:07Speaker 2: you know, first of all, does the league start to
- 19:10Speaker 2: adjust to Drake in that sense, like do they start
- 19:13Speaker 2: to adjust to the Patriots passing offense and say, now
- 19:16Speaker 2: this is the Tuesday element of this offense, is we
- 19:19Speaker 2: have to take away the passing game. And how then,
- 19:24Speaker 2: of course, do Josh McDaniels and Drake May adjust to
- 19:28Speaker 2: seeing more too high safety, to seeing more cushion soft
- 19:31Speaker 2: zone things like that, and even starting this week, like
- 19:34Speaker 2: the Titans don't have a great defense, they don't have
- 19:37Speaker 2: great personnel on defense, but Dinard Wilson is a good
- 19:41Speaker 2: defensive coordinator who gave Drake May some problems last year
- 19:45Speaker 2: in his rookie season down there in Nashville. And they
- 19:48Speaker 2: play a lot of too high safety zone, like they
- 19:50Speaker 2: don't play a ton of post safety or single high
- 19:53Speaker 2: safety manner zone. So Item number one, do we start
- 19:58Speaker 2: to see on film that teams are game planning differently
- 20:01Speaker 2: against the Patriots? Item number two, what is then, of course,
- 20:05Speaker 2: the Patriots adjustment to that chess match. And the third
- 20:09Speaker 2: thing that I want to get to that we don't
- 20:11Speaker 2: necessarily have to tackle right now, is this whole run
- 20:14Speaker 2: game thing that's happening and the fact that the Patriots
- 20:17Speaker 2: can't really run the football, and does that start to
- 20:21Speaker 2: find its level as well because the teams aren't stunting,
- 20:25Speaker 2: gap penetration, run blitzing, putting eight guys in the box,
- 20:29Speaker 2: And now all of a sudden, there's less clutter at
- 20:31Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage and now there's more open lanes
- 20:34Speaker 2: for the Patriots running backs. So I'm excited to see
- 20:38Speaker 2: what happens now that Drake May is starting to establish
- 20:41Speaker 2: himself like an elite quarterback because he's not being defended
- 20:45Speaker 2: like an elite quarterback.
- 20:47Speaker 1: So I want to rewind to something you said in
- 20:49Speaker 1: there earlier about, you know, talking about Drake May has
- 20:52Speaker 1: arrived and all of that. I said this on a
- 20:53Speaker 1: show yesterday, and I kind of felt ridiculous saying it,
- 20:55Speaker 1: So I'm glad to hear you say it. So we
- 20:58Speaker 1: obviously didn't do the show and Brady was here. We did.
- 21:01Speaker 1: We were what two shows against two shows that go
- 21:04Speaker 1: for us for us, But like you know, really going
- 21:09Speaker 1: back to twenty twenty one, I mean we've started every show,
- 21:13Speaker 1: in every column we've written and everything, and every day
- 21:15Speaker 1: of training camp and every game is what did the
- 21:18Speaker 1: quarterback do? How was the quarterback? Was it a good
- 21:21Speaker 1: day for the quarterback? Was it a bad day for
- 21:22Speaker 1: the quarterback? And yeah, I'm not gonna say quarterbacks never
- 21:25Speaker 1: going to be a focus because it's a National Football League,
- 21:27Speaker 1: but like we we wouldn't come on here the day
- 21:33Speaker 1: after Brady game and look, it was a good game
- 21:36Speaker 1: for Drake maybe you know what complete? Was it? Eighteen
- 21:38Speaker 1: to twenty six, two hundred and sixty yards, a couple
- 21:40Speaker 1: of touchdowns, like had three. We wouldn't have come on
- 21:43Speaker 1: here and been like, well, tom Brady's heading in the
- 21:46Speaker 1: right direction. It's so good they have Tom Brady right,
- 21:49Speaker 1: and it was. We would have started the show as example,
- 21:52Speaker 1: He's like, we probably would have started a show talking
- 21:53Speaker 1: about key Shan Boody, what a great game he had
- 21:55Speaker 1: and you know, awesome home coming to him for New Orleans.
- 21:57Speaker 1: But this is just in the modern NFL, in the
- 21:59Speaker 1: world we live in. Do you have the quarterback? Is
- 22:02Speaker 1: the quarterback the guy? Is such an important question and
- 22:04Speaker 1: I do think that's kind of the next level of
- 22:06Speaker 1: the Drake may discourse and I kind of can't wait
- 22:08Speaker 1: to get there. Is we don't hyper fixate on Drake May,
- 22:13Speaker 1: and it's not to diminish anything he's doing, but I
- 22:16Speaker 1: can't wait for the day and you saying that maybe
- 22:18Speaker 1: that's today, I can't wait for the day that Drake
- 22:21Speaker 1: May played well is not news, right, it's just the standard.
- 22:25Speaker 1: And I do feel I don't know that we're there yet,
- 22:28Speaker 1: but I do feel like we're kind of getting there.
- 22:29Speaker 1: And then that's I don't know why I feel like
- 22:32Speaker 1: I'm saying this, and it sounds like I'm knocking him.
- 22:34Speaker 1: I think it's a terrific thing, right, because thing of like, again,
- 22:38Speaker 1: think about it, we wouldn't now look if he those
- 22:40Speaker 1: were five hundred yards. Yeah, we're gonna come on here
- 22:41Speaker 1: and open about Drake May, obviously, but you know, there
- 22:45Speaker 1: were some of those games where Brady was kind of fine,
- 22:47Speaker 1: and he was moving the team up and down the field,
- 22:48Speaker 1: and he didn't play portally at all, but you know,
- 22:51Speaker 1: maybe the run game was the big story. The defense
- 22:53Speaker 1: had a couple turnovers or you know, who knows, and
- 22:55Speaker 1: we get around. So yeah, and you know, I thought
- 22:57Speaker 1: Brady played well, and we might you know, pick a
- 22:59Speaker 1: thing there here too, And it's gonna be cool when
- 23:03Speaker 1: Drake gets to that point where where we're like not
- 23:05Speaker 1: doing the thirty minute. Drake may break down after every
- 23:08Speaker 1: game because I do think we're gonna get there.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Yeah, We're we're really close to that point.
- 23:12Speaker 1: And so to your point, some of that too is
- 23:15Speaker 1: gonna come with all right, Like once teams are daring
- 23:20Speaker 1: them to run the ball and truly taking away the pass,
- 23:24Speaker 1: you know, the run game is gonna be the focus.
- 23:26Speaker 1: So I teams, I'm surprised they're still doing it at
- 23:28Speaker 1: this point, but you're right, teams can't continue to defend
- 23:31Speaker 1: the Patriots this way.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Okay, So just to get more into some more specifics
- 23:35Speaker 2: about Drake May in the passing game, I think the
- 23:38Speaker 2: biggest thing that stands out to me from Drake May
- 23:40Speaker 2: just as an individual play, is that like he doesn't
- 23:43Speaker 2: make bad instructure decisions anymore. Like when he when I
- 23:48Speaker 2: watch his film and I watch how he reads the
- 23:50Speaker 2: field and how he's seeing coverage and how he's processing
- 23:54Speaker 2: the game, there are one or two and this was
- 23:59Speaker 2: you know, when you see great quarterbacks, as tends to
- 24:01Speaker 2: be the case, there are one or two plays a
- 24:04Speaker 2: game now where you say was that really the best
- 24:09Speaker 2: option for where the ball should have gone? If that?
- 24:12Speaker 2: Like in this game, I thought that there was one
- 24:15Speaker 2: mental error for him the entire game, and that was
- 24:18Speaker 2: the delay of game in the red zone. Like that
- 24:20Speaker 2: was the one time that's not even a post snap
- 24:23Speaker 2: processing error, that's just a pre snap thing that he
- 24:26Speaker 2: doesn't make bad decisions anymore in terms of his processing
- 24:30Speaker 2: and the decisions to that.
- 24:31Speaker 1: You said bad decisions in structure. Yeah, also not making
- 24:35Speaker 1: a bad play worse last year on the bat and look,
- 24:38Speaker 1: the bad snap was a bad play, the fourth down
- 24:40Speaker 1: bad snap last year, Drake Nay tries to pick up
- 24:43Speaker 1: all up throws it. It probably gets tipped and picked off
- 24:45Speaker 1: right falling on the ball there understanding the plays loss.
- 24:48Speaker 1: It's a bad situation. Don't make it worse. Like it's
- 24:51Speaker 1: not just instructure overall, he's making much better decisions.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Yeah, And I know he's credited a lot of this
- 24:58Speaker 2: to the pass protection. They deserve some credit for it
- 25:02Speaker 2: as well. But his ball security in the pocket has
- 25:06Speaker 2: been tremendously improved. And I just remember the first preseason
- 25:10Speaker 2: game against Washington and he comes out and he gets
- 25:13Speaker 2: stripsacked on the first third down of the game, and
- 25:15Speaker 2: it looked exactly like his rookie season, Like he'd told
- 25:18Speaker 2: in the ball a little bit too long. The ball's out,
- 25:21Speaker 2: you know, and vulnerable when he starts to move. Now,
- 25:25Speaker 2: when you watch him move with the football, he's got
- 25:28Speaker 2: two hands on the ball, and he's doing some things
- 25:31Speaker 2: in the pocket that are really advanced in terms of
- 25:33Speaker 2: his ball security. Of like he'll put two hands on
- 25:36Speaker 2: the ball and he'll like swing his arms through so
- 25:39Speaker 2: when he feels that edge pressure coming from behind him,
- 25:42Speaker 2: he'll just take the football and it's usually here right
- 25:44Speaker 2: because it's loaded in his right hand, and he like
- 25:47Speaker 2: swings it through to the left hip and sort of
- 25:49Speaker 2: protects the football as he's sliding or as he's moving
- 25:52Speaker 2: around in the pocket. We have seen Josh McDaniels and
- 25:55Speaker 2: Ashton Grant drill that with him, going all the way
- 25:58Speaker 2: back to the spring. They do the same quarterback drills
- 26:01Speaker 2: every single day to start practice. During positional drills of
- 26:05Speaker 2: guys coming around the edge were swatting down at his arm,
- 26:09Speaker 2: which used to be like all the way out here.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Remember all of the elongated throwing motion and all that conversation,
- 26:15Speaker 2: like now, it's also tight and the ball is so
- 26:18Speaker 2: tight to his body that when he moves in the pocket,
- 26:23Speaker 2: he's not getting strip sacked as much. And some of
- 26:26Speaker 2: that's timing, some of that's pass protection, but I think
- 26:29Speaker 2: a lot of it too is just his mechanics in
- 26:32Speaker 2: the pocket, his awareness of pressure, and then his ability
- 26:35Speaker 2: to protect the football. So last year as a rookie,
- 26:38Speaker 2: he was averaging a turnover worthy play on three point
- 26:42Speaker 2: five percent of his dropbacks. That's all the way down
- 26:45Speaker 2: to two percent, the very tenth in the league. So
- 26:49Speaker 2: he's a top ten quarterback now in the league in
- 26:51Speaker 2: terms of yeah of turnover worthy plays. A guy that
- 26:56Speaker 2: we had concerns coming into the year about him turning
- 26:59Speaker 2: the football all over. He's not putting the ball at
- 27:01Speaker 2: harm's way nearly as often, and that has to go
- 27:04Speaker 2: to what I was talking about with the processing, but
- 27:07Speaker 2: also with the ball security in the pocket and the
- 27:10Speaker 2: mechanics in the pocket as well. I mean, we can
- 27:13Speaker 2: go throw by some of the individual throwers are just
- 27:16Speaker 2: unbelievable in this game, obviously, but I think that those
- 27:19Speaker 2: couple of things are how he has taken the next
- 27:23Speaker 2: step from flashing to being consistent, and like, that's when
- 27:27Speaker 2: when you're consistent, that's when the efficiency starts to get
- 27:30Speaker 2: driven up. It's you know, we saw the flashes his
- 27:33Speaker 2: rookie season. Now he's efficiently protecting the football and we're
- 27:37Speaker 2: still seeing the playmaking ability shine. And it's just been
- 27:40Speaker 2: really fun to see the Other thing that really stood
- 27:42Speaker 2: out to me on this tape from this game.
- 27:46Speaker 1: One more thing on Mett and you kind of hit
- 27:47Speaker 1: on it, But it feels like you talk about the
- 27:49Speaker 1: growth each week, it's something new and you see it
- 27:52Speaker 1: in real time. So last week it was all the
- 27:57Speaker 1: rollouts to the right, right, and he's rolling out to
- 27:59Speaker 1: the right, he's thrown on, he's making these big plays,
- 28:01Speaker 1: and that was something new him doing that, not him
- 28:03Speaker 1: doing that, but him doing that as consistently as he
- 28:06Speaker 1: did and as well as he did. So talking to
- 28:09Speaker 1: people that cover the Saints this week, it kind of
- 28:11Speaker 1: sounded like the point of emphasis was don't let May
- 28:13Speaker 1: outside of the pocket, right, keep him in the pocket,
- 28:16Speaker 1: don't let him get on those rollouts, which logically that
- 28:18Speaker 1: would be the book on a quarterback that did what
- 28:20Speaker 1: Drake made did to the Bills. So what does Drake
- 28:22Speaker 1: May do stands in the pocket. I thought his ability
- 28:26Speaker 1: to navigate the pocket, that's the best I've seen him do.
- 28:28Speaker 1: That was outstanding, and he makes him pay from the pocket.
- 28:31Speaker 1: So one you see the growth in real time, some
- 28:34Speaker 1: of those plays where he's moving around the pocket, climbing
- 28:36Speaker 1: the pocket, like he was in the same situation against
- 28:39Speaker 1: Pittsburgh a month ago and got stripsacked right, and now
- 28:42Speaker 1: those are going for thirty yard completions. You can see
- 28:44Speaker 1: the growth happen in real time. You can see we
- 28:48Speaker 1: can point to something from the first two or three
- 28:50Speaker 1: weeks and say this needs to be done better, and
- 28:53Speaker 1: then in the last couple of games you see the
- 28:55Speaker 1: exact same situation and it's here, it's done correctly. That's
- 28:58Speaker 1: really cool to see. The other thing that does big picture.
- 29:02Speaker 1: You hear about this a lot, and I'm sure we'll
- 29:03Speaker 1: hear it with Drake soon if it hasn't started yet.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Once these guys get to around twenty starts and I
- 29:08Speaker 1: think May is at seventeen now eighteen now, although two
- 29:11Speaker 1: of those he had the one Jets game he got
- 29:13Speaker 1: knock knocked out of early and then the Bills game
- 29:15Speaker 1: at the end of last year. Like you start hearing
- 29:17Speaker 1: the well, once the league has tape on him, it's
- 29:19Speaker 1: the legue has tape on him. What's gonna happen in
- 29:21Speaker 1: the league has tape on him. So he's canceling out
- 29:25Speaker 1: a lot of those things, because again, what's the book
- 29:27Speaker 1: on Drake may Well? Don't let him roll right? He
- 29:29Speaker 1: killed the Bills rolling right, keep them in the pocket. Okay, well,
- 29:32Speaker 1: now he just killed the Saints in the pocket, So
- 29:34Speaker 1: now where does the book go. Don't let him hit
- 29:35Speaker 1: you with the short stuff. Well, a lot of the
- 29:37Speaker 1: most of the the sprays are gone. He's not sailing
- 29:41Speaker 1: the short stuff, all right, Well, don't let him beat
- 29:43Speaker 1: you deep. Well, you know, then you're leaving the shorts
- 29:45Speaker 1: like he's just every time. And this is not unusual,
- 29:50Speaker 1: but like with a young quarterback, it's kind of process
- 29:52Speaker 1: of elimination. All right, Well, he's doing this well, so
- 29:54Speaker 1: we need to test him and see if he can
- 29:56Speaker 1: beat us this way. Okay, well he just beat us
- 29:58Speaker 1: this way, so we need to try this other thing
- 30:00Speaker 1: and see if he can beat us this way. And
- 30:03Speaker 1: he's just answering test after test after tests. So as
- 30:05Speaker 1: there's more film about him, he's continuing to kind of
- 30:08Speaker 1: evolve his game either of all this game or just
- 30:11Speaker 1: go into the toolbox and pull out tools that he
- 30:13Speaker 1: hasn't used yet, and it's gonna make it hard for
- 30:18Speaker 1: teams to kind of get that sophomore slump on them
- 30:21Speaker 1: and get that you know, I don't know what you
- 30:23Speaker 1: cout tape bump or whatever on them.
- 30:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it's crazy to just see the playmaking still hold
- 30:30Speaker 2: strong as the turnover where he plays and decision making improves,
- 30:34Speaker 2: because normally when you start to be less aggressive and
- 30:38Speaker 2: stuff like that and less erratic, you don't see as
- 30:42Speaker 2: many big time throws down the field because it just
- 30:45Speaker 2: goes hand in hand, right, If you're not taking as
- 30:46Speaker 2: many chances, you're not gonna have as many high level plays,
- 30:49Speaker 2: but you're also not gonna have as many low level
- 30:51Speaker 2: plays either. He's still having all the high level plays
- 30:54Speaker 2: and he's just eliminating the low level plays, right, which
- 30:57Speaker 2: is when you know you have something special. The other
- 30:59Speaker 2: thing that was really encouraging and kind of goes hand
- 31:02Speaker 2: in hand with my theme here about you know, our
- 31:05Speaker 2: defense is going to start to adjust and play more
- 31:07Speaker 2: too high safety and back off this Patriots passing offense
- 31:10Speaker 2: a little bit. This was the one of the more
- 31:13Speaker 2: encouraging games I thought in terms of receiver separation down
- 31:17Speaker 2: the field, Like the last time the Patriots had this
- 31:20Speaker 2: kind of deep passing game production where guys were actually
- 31:25Speaker 2: breaking open down the field, I don't know. I honestly
- 31:30Speaker 2: don't know when the last time that that happened. You know,
- 31:33Speaker 2: they get the dressed up play with you know, clearly
- 31:35Speaker 2: a designed a scripted shot play to pop Douglas on
- 31:39Speaker 2: the opening drive like that that route where he know
- 31:42Speaker 2: nods to the corner and then breaks on the post.
- 31:44Speaker 2: He's got five six yards of separation wide. Yeah, I
- 31:48Speaker 2: mean that is not something that you see from a
- 31:51Speaker 2: Patriots offense fifty yards down the field very often. Kaishan
- 31:56Speaker 2: Boodie on his second touchdown just shakes the corner and
- 32:00Speaker 2: gets wide open on a man to man rep. As well.
- 32:03Speaker 2: Stefan Digs on fourth down, you know, moves the chains
- 32:06Speaker 2: on a little slant where he's just that's just pitching catch,
- 32:09Speaker 2: you know, seven on seven in July for Stefan Digs
- 32:13Speaker 2: and Drake May having all of these different things happen
- 32:18Speaker 2: on the film in this game, Drake May four for
- 32:21Speaker 2: five on deep passes, had one taken away because of
- 32:25Speaker 2: a bogus OPI had another taken away because of a
- 32:27Speaker 2: bogus OPI has.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Another taken away because of a non DPI.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Right, So, like, if you add back in his numbers
- 32:34Speaker 2: alone with four for five, three touchdowns on deep passes
- 32:38Speaker 2: are good enough. Now imagine if you add back in
- 32:41Speaker 2: one hundred and thirteen yards and another touchdown. Now, maybe
- 32:45Speaker 2: the booty touchdown doesn't happen because the pop touchdown would
- 32:48Speaker 2: have happened. But you get my point, yeah, is that
- 32:51Speaker 2: they they really were able to throw the ball down
- 32:54Speaker 2: the field. Some of the I tweeted this out last night.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Some of Drake May's deep passing numbers are just absolutely absurd.
- 33:03Speaker 1: He is he's late or seventy percent completion percent.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Actually, he's ten of thirteen on deep throws to start
- 33:10Speaker 2: the season. Uh that's that's like seventy six percent.
- 33:13Speaker 1: That's ridiculous. So next Gen the league outge is like
- 33:16Speaker 1: forty percent.
- 33:18Speaker 2: So next Gen goes back to twenty sixteen, and for
- 33:22Speaker 2: passers with a minimum of five deep pass attempts in
- 33:25Speaker 2: the season, he has the best completion rate that I
- 33:28Speaker 2: that in the next Gen era right now on deep
- 33:31Speaker 2: passes now obviously that could you know, find its level,
- 33:36Speaker 2: and that could by the end of the season he
- 33:38Speaker 2: might come back down to earth. But his passer rating
- 33:42Speaker 2: on deep throws right now is one hundred and fifty seven.
- 33:45Speaker 2: One hundred and fifty eight point three is a perfect
- 33:47Speaker 2: pass rating. So you're saying, so he's essentially perfect on
- 33:52Speaker 2: the deep ball at this point. And I just was
- 33:56Speaker 2: highly encouraged, you know, and this is where we can
- 33:58Speaker 2: kind of talk about Kai Shan Booties performance as well.
- 34:01Speaker 2: I was just highly encouraged about how open some of
- 34:04Speaker 2: these receivers were getting because that was not something that
- 34:08Speaker 2: we have seen a lot here in this neck of
- 34:12Speaker 2: the woods football wise. How long have we been talking
- 34:15Speaker 2: about separation and a lack thereof of receiver separation and
- 34:20Speaker 2: do they have enough talent at receiver and they need
- 34:23Speaker 2: number one receiver and maybe they still do need like
- 34:25Speaker 2: a true number one alpha dog, right like AJ Brown,
- 34:30Speaker 2: you know, or someone like that. But this receiver room
- 34:32Speaker 2: deserves a ton of credit. They've played some really good football.
- 34:36Speaker 2: It hasn't always been volume, you know, for everybody, but
- 34:38Speaker 2: when they get the ball thrown their way, and this
- 34:41Speaker 2: has kind of been the story of kaishon Booty's season.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Kaishon Boody's caught in eighteen of the twenty three targets
- 34:47Speaker 2: thrown his way this year. Yeah, that efficiency is off
- 34:51Speaker 2: the charts. I was just really highly encouraged by how
- 34:55Speaker 2: open guys were getting. I haven't been able to say
- 34:57Speaker 2: that in a while. Obviously, we can talk a little
- 34:59Speaker 2: bit about Boo. Just a great performance by him as well.
- 35:02Speaker 1: Yeah, he was awesome, and just not only is he
- 35:06Speaker 1: catching a lot of these targets, all five of his
- 35:09Speaker 1: catches in this game win for first downs. His last
- 35:12Speaker 1: ten catches have gone for first downs. Going back to
- 35:14Speaker 1: the Steelers game, sixteen of his eighteen catches have gone
- 35:17Speaker 1: for first downs. And it's not like they're using him
- 35:20Speaker 1: on these little dink and dunk third and two, third
- 35:22Speaker 1: and threes. Fifteen of his eighteen catches this year have
- 35:25Speaker 1: been for ten or more yards. Of the two that
- 35:27Speaker 1: are not first downs, Evan one of them was in
- 35:30Speaker 1: the opener. It's a second and fifteen. He runs the
- 35:33Speaker 1: rout a yard short of the sticks because the corner
- 35:35Speaker 1: is sitting on the sticks, gets a fourteen yard game
- 35:37Speaker 1: on second and fifteen. They pick up the first down
- 35:39Speaker 1: on the next play, he's moving the chains and he's
- 35:42Speaker 1: being a tremendous intermediate threat. I think he's like sixth
- 35:45Speaker 1: in the league in yards per catch. I know he's
- 35:47Speaker 1: top ten. So to have that high of a first
- 35:49Speaker 1: down rate on targets, not on catches, on targets, Yeah,
- 35:52Speaker 1: to have that high of a first down rate on
- 35:54Speaker 1: targets and still have the yards per catch be that
- 35:56Speaker 1: high is nuts. He is average one first down every
- 36:01Speaker 1: one point four targets, highest rate in the league among
- 36:04Speaker 1: receivers with at least twenty targets. The next closest is
- 36:06Speaker 1: Tyreek Hill at one point seven. The gap between Kaishawn
- 36:09Speaker 1: Booty and the next closest receiver in that regard is
- 36:12Speaker 1: the same as the gap between the second and ninth
- 36:14Speaker 1: ranked receiver in that regard. We talked about it in
- 36:18Speaker 1: the summer. They needed somebody to maybe not be and
- 36:20Speaker 1: they're doing some true vertical stuff with Booty. It's mostly
- 36:23Speaker 1: been like just outside the red zone and these like
- 36:26Speaker 1: thirty yard goal balls for touchdowns. He had one of
- 36:28Speaker 1: those in this game. He had one of the Miami
- 36:30Speaker 1: game as well. But we talked about their need to
- 36:33Speaker 1: have a guy that maybe wasn't high volume, but was
- 36:37Speaker 1: high yards per catch and was their first down guy.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Now I thought it was gonna be Pop Douglas to
- 36:41Speaker 1: this point that is not beared out, but they needed
- 36:44Speaker 1: a guy to step up in that role. Kashawan Boody
- 36:45Speaker 1: is absolutely stepped up in that role.
- 36:47Speaker 2: He's been their best vertical threat on this offense. And
- 36:51Speaker 2: I think what really stands out to me with him
- 36:53Speaker 2: is his contested catchability has just been fantastic guy. I mean,
- 36:59Speaker 2: you saw that on his first touchdown where he wins
- 37:02Speaker 2: at the catch point there on the go route. The
- 37:04Speaker 2: third and eleven played at ice the game is another
- 37:07Speaker 2: back shoulder fade contested catch. He's caught five of his
- 37:11Speaker 2: seven contested targets playing on the outside. That's a very
- 37:15Speaker 2: high rate of catch rate for contested targets. It's usually
- 37:19Speaker 2: that's like true. You know, you can call him fifty
- 37:21Speaker 2: to fifty balls for a reason, and he's well over
- 37:23Speaker 2: fifty percent on those. I think his play strength and
- 37:28Speaker 2: his physicality at the catch point has improved leaps and bounds,
- 37:33Speaker 2: and then his awareness along the sideline. I mean, I
- 37:37Speaker 2: can't help but go back to his rookie season in
- 37:39Speaker 2: the first game against Philadelphia where he doesn't get a
- 37:41Speaker 2: foot and bounds.
- 37:41Speaker 1: I think it was a learning moment.
- 37:43Speaker 2: I mean, he's been phenomenal in that regard. Two weeks
- 37:46Speaker 2: in a row on Sunday, he catches a little out
- 37:51Speaker 2: and slides down in bounds to make the Saints burn
- 37:54Speaker 2: a time out. Then he stays in bounds on the
- 37:56Speaker 2: back shoulder fade. He did the same thing on the
- 37:58Speaker 2: whole shot against Buffalo, where he stayed you know, got
- 38:00Speaker 2: down immediately to stay in bounds there to keep the
- 38:03Speaker 2: clock winding. Like these are plays that I've actually asked
- 38:07Speaker 2: him about afterwards, and he's aware of these situations like
- 38:11Speaker 2: this isn't like by accident, Yeah, Like he's doing this
- 38:14Speaker 2: type of stuff on purpose. That kind of awareness is
- 38:17Speaker 2: really a testament to him and him being locked in
- 38:21Speaker 2: and really you know, honing in on his craft, which
- 38:24Speaker 2: I don't necessarily know it was something that was in
- 38:27Speaker 2: his bag. He's always been very talented, but that was
- 38:31Speaker 2: the question mark right maturity, you know, being locked in
- 38:36Speaker 2: on and off the field. Like he's had some issues
- 38:38Speaker 2: there and he was open about it after the game
- 38:40Speaker 2: on Sunday that he's had some issues in those regards
- 38:43Speaker 2: and now he's just so laser sharp in a lot
- 38:46Speaker 2: of these situations. So a ton of credit to Kaishan Boody.
- 38:50Speaker 2: The last thing I wanted to say about the passing offense,
- 38:53Speaker 2: just because you know, to kind of put a bow
- 38:55Speaker 2: on all of this. A good stuff for them. The
- 38:58Speaker 2: pass blocking has been really, really good. Now. Some of
- 39:02Speaker 2: that is scheme and design, and I do want to
- 39:07Speaker 2: give Doug Moron and Josh McDaniels their flowers for that.
- 39:11Speaker 2: They are not allowing teams to just tee off on
- 39:14Speaker 2: their tackles all that much. They're getting a lot of help,
- 39:17Speaker 2: a lot of chips, a lot of slides, a lot
- 39:20Speaker 2: of double teams, a lot of Max Protect, like the
- 39:22Speaker 2: Pop Douglas touchdown is they leave bol tight ends in
- 39:25Speaker 2: they get double teams kind of across the board, just
- 39:28Speaker 2: in Max Protect, loaded up type of play. So it's
- 39:32Speaker 2: not all just you know, Morgan, Moses, Will Campbell, these
- 39:35Speaker 2: guys on islands. But to their credit, when they have
- 39:39Speaker 2: been on islands, they've held up well. Will Campbell hasn't
- 39:43Speaker 2: allowed to sack since week one. Yeah, and he's allowed
- 39:47Speaker 2: some hurries. And there were some hurries in this game.
- 39:49Speaker 2: And I had some sort of criticisms of his game,
- 39:54Speaker 2: I would say, coming off this one, especially in the
- 39:57Speaker 2: run game, for basically across the board, which we'll get to,
- 40:00Speaker 2: but the pass protection by pretty much every metric is
- 40:04Speaker 2: now trending towards the top of the league. And if
- 40:07Speaker 2: you told me that that's where they were going to
- 40:09Speaker 2: be after where they have been the last couple of years,
- 40:11Speaker 2: especially last year as an offensive line, that's really impressive.
- 40:16Speaker 2: And maybe it's not the best run blocking line. We
- 40:18Speaker 2: thought it would be better and hasn't been. Maybe it's not.
- 40:21Speaker 2: Maybe it's more of a finesse line and they're really
- 40:23Speaker 2: just built to pass protect. But if they pass protect
- 40:26Speaker 2: like this, I'll take it. I mean that this is
- 40:28Speaker 2: exactly why. A huge reason i'd say this is probably
- 40:33Speaker 2: like Drake May. If you want to hand out the
- 40:36Speaker 2: credit to the players in terms of the passing game,
- 40:40Speaker 2: Drake May is probably sixty five percent.
- 40:43Speaker 1: YEA.
- 40:44Speaker 2: The offensive line, I would say might be even more
- 40:46Speaker 2: of a big deal. In the receivers at this point,
- 40:48Speaker 2: they've done a really nice job.
- 40:50Speaker 1: It's been great. It's been great. No blowbys, you know,
- 40:54Speaker 1: the penalties are minimal, the pressures are minimal. A lot
- 40:57Speaker 1: tolike in terms of the pass blocking. Uh.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Moving on to the defense. I did have one good
- 41:02Speaker 2: thing I thought from the defense in this game, looking
- 41:05Speaker 2: at some of the numbers and also just the way
- 41:07Speaker 2: the game unfolded.
- 41:08Speaker 1: We're doing what we're doing, good, the bad, and what
- 41:11Speaker 1: gets you beat?
- 41:11Speaker 2: Yes, okay, So do you do you have anything else?
- 41:14Speaker 3: No?
- 41:14Speaker 1: I just I don't know that we introduced it that way,
- 41:16Speaker 1: so I want to make sure it's that's why we're
- 41:18Speaker 1: not going offense to offense. That's not where we're going
- 41:21Speaker 1: past game right to run.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Yeah, great, great hosting by me there.
- 41:25Speaker 1: Uh, wait to get to the reads.
- 41:26Speaker 2: We definitely got off the rails with talking about the
- 41:29Speaker 2: rest of the NFL conversation though, that's what threw me off.
- 41:32Speaker 2: It was an interesting last good thing here, and then
- 41:34Speaker 2: we'll get to some of the stuff they need to
- 41:35Speaker 2: work on. I thought the second half defense was good again.
- 41:39Speaker 2: I thought they made some big plays and key moments
- 41:41Speaker 2: in the second half, especially here you have the Marcus
- 41:44Speaker 2: Jones sack on third down. It forces a field goal
- 41:47Speaker 2: they get to stop. Finally on that third down play
- 41:49Speaker 2: with Christian Gonzales late in the game, Christianelli's forcing the
- 41:52Speaker 2: fumble right Christianelli's forces a fumble. Yep. So if you're
- 41:56Speaker 2: just looking at it, you know, they they kind of
- 41:58Speaker 2: settled down again defensesively in the second half. We'll get
- 42:02Speaker 2: to the first half and we'll get to some of
- 42:03Speaker 2: the issues with the starts on defense, but overall I
- 42:06Speaker 2: thought that they once again the game kind of declared
- 42:11Speaker 2: and they sort of adjusted and were able to figure
- 42:13Speaker 2: it out.
- 42:13Speaker 1: I have a big picture take on the defense that
- 42:15Speaker 1: I guess is kind of the good and the bad.
- 42:17Speaker 1: It depends how you want to look at. It's glass
- 42:18Speaker 1: half full of glass half empty. That's a game schematically no,
- 42:22Speaker 1: but like the overall strategy that would have fit right
- 42:25Speaker 1: in in the Bill Belichick Ben don't break era. Yeah,
- 42:28Speaker 1: you know, people kept asking why are these there's you know,
- 42:31Speaker 1: what are the corners doing. The receivers are super open.
- 42:33Speaker 1: I think that was kind of the plan because the
- 42:35Speaker 1: plays they're open on are all like hitches and quick
- 42:37Speaker 1: in cuts and things like that. And you know, I
- 42:40Speaker 1: talked about it last week. Did the way New Orleans
- 42:44Speaker 1: is built roster wise a little similar to Miami with
- 42:46Speaker 1: the speed you get beat down the field big on
- 42:49Speaker 1: the first play, which I don't love the corner blitz
- 42:51Speaker 1: on the first play the game, especially against that offense.
- 42:53Speaker 1: But you get beat down the field in the first
- 42:55Speaker 1: play game. Maybe this helped reinforce it. But that was
- 42:57Speaker 1: Ben don't break. That was we're going to sit back,
- 43:00Speaker 1: We're going to allow the short stuff. We're going to
- 43:01Speaker 1: step up and tackle. They tackled well, only two miss
- 43:04Speaker 1: tackles in this game. And we're gonna make Spencer Rattler
- 43:07Speaker 1: be perfect. And de Spencer Ratler's credit like he was.
- 43:10Speaker 1: He handled that situation better than I thought he would. Yeah,
- 43:12Speaker 1: like he played pretty well. But you know, as much
- 43:16Speaker 1: as that defensive ever felt painful in the moment, like
- 43:20Speaker 1: watching it, it was a little bit of a tough watch,
- 43:22Speaker 1: I think if you're a Patriots fan, But when you
- 43:24Speaker 1: go back and look at the big picture, like I
- 43:26Speaker 1: said this to my my Buddi's like, defense playing horrible.
- 43:28Speaker 1: This is like, you know, a little bit into the
- 43:30Speaker 1: game or a little bit in the you know, towards
- 43:32Speaker 1: the end of the game, I was like, rest, they've
- 43:33Speaker 1: only allowed one touchdown, right, He was like, no, it
- 43:35Speaker 1: feels like more right, they only allowed one touchdown. The
- 43:38Speaker 1: Saints are three of nine on third downs. They got
- 43:41Speaker 1: under the Patriots half of the field five times and
- 43:43Speaker 1: they came away with nineteen points. Yeah, that's if you're
- 43:46Speaker 1: an offense. That's not like that's a problem. You're going
- 43:50Speaker 1: back and that's one of the biggest things you're revisiting.
- 43:52Speaker 1: So was it perfect defensively?
- 43:54Speaker 4: No?
- 43:55Speaker 1: And what was odd was so I think there were
- 43:56Speaker 1: ben don't break on the back end, but they stayed
- 43:59Speaker 1: aggressive up front, which is you know in the ben
- 44:02Speaker 1: don't break bill us talking about this all the time
- 44:05Speaker 1: and incompletion is just as good as a sack, just
- 44:07Speaker 1: keeping behind the chains, and that's why they wouldn't be
- 44:09Speaker 1: so aggressive on that pass rush and just moving the
- 44:12Speaker 1: quarterback off his spot or just bumping him and making
- 44:14Speaker 1: him throw it away, even if it's not a sack,
- 44:16Speaker 1: might be worth it. But you had a couple of
- 44:18Speaker 1: times where rushers were running by Spencer Rattler and creating
- 44:21Speaker 1: lanes for Spencer Ratler that wouldn't have all otherwise been
- 44:24Speaker 1: there with a more disciplined rush. So you know, there
- 44:27Speaker 1: was that element of it which I think made a
- 44:28Speaker 1: little more frustrating. But again, five trips to the plus
- 44:32Speaker 1: side of the field, only one touchdown show for it.
- 44:35Speaker 1: Three of nine on third downs under three hundred total yards,
- 44:39Speaker 1: Patriots average more pot yards per play than the Saints
- 44:42Speaker 1: did outside of the kneel downs at the end of
- 44:43Speaker 1: the game. If the game playan truly was Ben don't break.
- 44:47Speaker 1: We don't want to get beat by the speed by
- 44:49Speaker 1: the way new they're starting free safety either, which might
- 44:51Speaker 1: have made them, like Jalen Hawkins probably would have been
- 44:54Speaker 1: a big player in this game be played. That might
- 44:56Speaker 1: have made them go a little more towards us. We're
- 44:59Speaker 1: going to play its. If we're gonna sit back on it,
- 45:01Speaker 1: we're going to force the underneath. We're gonna step up,
- 45:03Speaker 1: We're gonna tackle. We're gonna make them beat us by
- 45:05Speaker 1: a million paper cuts. If that was the game plan,
- 45:08Speaker 1: they executed that game plan, and they executed it relatively well.
- 45:11Speaker 1: If that wasn't the game plan, I'd be a little
- 45:12Speaker 1: more worried. But I do think that they kind of
- 45:15Speaker 1: viewed this and bred it to Zach Kor and we've
- 45:17Speaker 1: seen them be a game plan defense here at times
- 45:19Speaker 1: early in the year. I think that was a Ben
- 45:21Speaker 1: don't break game and that's what they did.
- 45:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree. I mean, I'm just looking at it
- 45:26Speaker 2: statistically They played sixty five percent of their downs and
- 45:30Speaker 2: off coverage in this game on the outside. Yeah, in
- 45:32Speaker 2: Buffalo it was only forty percent. And they played a
- 45:35Speaker 2: lot of zone too, right, Yeah, a lot of zone,
- 45:37Speaker 2: seventy percent zone. So like they last week, it was
- 45:40Speaker 2: we came out of the you know on the show,
- 45:43Speaker 2: and I talked a lot about playing man and challenging
- 45:46Speaker 2: the Bills and receivers and impressed playing press, and they
- 45:49Speaker 2: are forty percent man and they were in the receiver's
- 45:52Speaker 2: faces and all that different stuff, and I love that
- 45:54Speaker 2: game plan. This week they definitely went ben don't break.
- 45:57Speaker 2: You know, sixty five percent off coverage. They average like
- 46:00Speaker 2: almost seven yards of cushion on the outside to these receivers.
- 46:05Speaker 2: So whether it was that was the plan going in,
- 46:09Speaker 2: or Chris Olave hit a fifty three yard bomb on
- 46:12Speaker 2: the first play of the game and they were like,
- 46:14Speaker 2: all right, I can't imagine. I don't know.
- 46:16Speaker 1: So I wanted to talk about that, like, I can't
- 46:18Speaker 1: imagine you throw your entire game plan out over one play.
- 46:21Speaker 1: I'd have to think they went in with the baseline
- 46:24Speaker 1: and we're going to play this bend don't break. But
- 46:25Speaker 1: I wonder if that maybe reinforced it and like, all right,
- 46:28Speaker 1: we're going to like really live in this instead of
- 46:30Speaker 1: just like kind of have it as an option.
- 46:34Speaker 2: So the interesting thing that I think, you know, comes
- 46:37Speaker 2: out of this game from a defensive standpoint, they are
- 46:41Speaker 2: not doing well defensively against the pass. Just from an
- 46:45Speaker 2: efficiency standpoint, you know, they're twenty third in drop back EPA,
- 46:49Speaker 2: they're twenty fifth and passer rating allowed if you want
- 46:51Speaker 2: to use passer rating, so they're down near the bottom
- 46:53Speaker 2: of the league as a pass defense. But they're seventh
- 46:57Speaker 2: in the league in scoring defense. They're giving up twenty
- 47:00Speaker 2: points a game. So this is as a defense, a
- 47:04Speaker 2: lot of this has turned into sort of ben don't
- 47:06Speaker 2: break as a unit all season long. You know, I
- 47:09Speaker 2: said yesterday on Unfiltered, we kind of were on the
- 47:12Speaker 2: same wavelength. It reminds me of like the Patricia Bill
- 47:16Speaker 2: defenses right where you know, there's a lot of bend
- 47:18Speaker 2: don't break in there. Every once in a while, they're
- 47:21Speaker 2: gonna throw an exotic, you know, scheme at the defense
- 47:24Speaker 2: at the offense, excuse me, that might lead to a
- 47:26Speaker 2: negative play, whether it's a big sack on third down
- 47:30Speaker 2: to force a field goal or a turnover or something
- 47:32Speaker 2: like that. But it's opportunistick with the turnovers. It's exotic
- 47:37Speaker 2: third down pressure when you get into long you know,
- 47:39Speaker 2: third down and pass situations. But other than that, they
- 47:42Speaker 2: played a lot of Bend don't break. Now. The one
- 47:45Speaker 2: thing that I would say that makes me a little
- 47:48Speaker 2: bit annoyed by that, yeah, is you have Christian Zales
- 47:52Speaker 2: and Carlton Davis and you're playing ben don't break. Right,
- 47:55Speaker 2: you would think that they.
- 47:56Speaker 1: Didn't have Christian Zalees for part of the year.
- 47:58Speaker 2: Sure, but it hasn't really changed all that much.
- 48:01Speaker 1: Maybe changed in Buffalo. Well, so that's the thing. So
- 48:04Speaker 1: they never at the beginning of the year, the Carolina game,
- 48:07Speaker 1: they just they could do whatever they want to doors. Yeah,
- 48:10Speaker 1: the Bills game is I think, how we want them
- 48:12Speaker 1: to play and how we expect them to play, right, Yes,
- 48:14Speaker 1: And now you go into this and this is a
- 48:15Speaker 1: matchup game. So let's say, mate, what if that was
- 48:17Speaker 1: a one off? Would you change that take if that
- 48:19Speaker 1: game was a one off? And they just looked at
- 48:21Speaker 1: it and said, this is how we have to play
- 48:23Speaker 1: the Saints. So we're gonna play them that way and
- 48:24Speaker 1: then we'll get back to it. Next week.
- 48:26Speaker 2: Maybe I just look at this, I'm not rolling that out.
- 48:28Speaker 2: I look at their numbers in terms of the passing game. Yeah,
- 48:32Speaker 2: and it's not very It doesn't feel very sustainable to
- 48:37Speaker 2: be honestly, use passerrating to be twenty fifth in the
- 48:41Speaker 2: league and passer rating allowed and only be giving up
- 48:45Speaker 2: twenty point zero games. Guys, those two things don't usually
- 48:48Speaker 2: go hand in hand.
- 48:49Speaker 1: The other thing I would add to that is pat
- 48:53Speaker 1: you're talking about like old school passerating, right, yep, so
- 48:56Speaker 1: old school passer rating.
- 48:58Speaker 2: Or you can go EPA is twenty third and les.
- 49:01Speaker 1: So here's the thing with these efficiency things. And I
- 49:03Speaker 1: don't know the exact formula for EPA, but like I
- 49:05Speaker 1: know the pass rating, so it weighs completion percentage heavily, yep,
- 49:08Speaker 1: and it weighs turnover heavily. So even if you're not
- 49:12Speaker 1: true ben, don't break. But you're getting beat on a
- 49:14Speaker 1: bunch of quick hitters and you're stepping up and making
- 49:17Speaker 1: the tackle, it's gonna look efficient. But if it's like
- 49:21Speaker 1: this is kind of what Carolina did to them, where
- 49:24Speaker 1: they hit a bunch of like four yard passes, and
- 49:27Speaker 1: so I think that drags the efficiency down, But that's
- 49:29Speaker 1: ultimately good defense if you're stepping up and tackling so
- 49:33Speaker 1: and they just they haven't. They should have more interceptions
- 49:37Speaker 1: than they do. Like I I feel like.
- 49:42Speaker 2: It just kind of breaks my brain a little bit
- 49:44Speaker 2: from a nerd standpoint of like how could they be
- 49:48Speaker 2: this bad against the pass statistically? But then you look
- 49:53Speaker 2: up and the opponent.
- 49:54Speaker 1: Only what does tape tell you?
- 49:57Speaker 2: Well, I mean it's one and the same. Like, I
- 49:59Speaker 2: don't think they defend pass particularly well right now, especially
- 50:02Speaker 2: in the middle of the field. Like I think that
- 50:05Speaker 2: you saw in this game, it's a lot of inbreaking
- 50:07Speaker 2: routes into the middle of the field. The corners are
- 50:10Speaker 2: playing zone technique, so they're playing outside leverage, they're bailing,
- 50:13Speaker 2: and then these you know, a Lave and Shaheed are
- 50:16Speaker 2: cutting into the middle of the field of the defense
- 50:19Speaker 2: and these linebackers that are dropping underneath are not squeezing
- 50:23Speaker 2: those windows enough, you know. I think it was really
- 50:25Speaker 2: kind of like a juxtaposition because they hit the dagger
- 50:29Speaker 2: route to Brandon Cooks for twenty one yards earlier in
- 50:32Speaker 2: the drive, and you just saw you know, Robert splaying
- 50:35Speaker 2: kind of get manipulated out of the passing window a
- 50:37Speaker 2: little bit, and then to Splaine's credit, on the third
- 50:40Speaker 2: down play that they got the stop. It's the same concept.
- 50:43Speaker 2: They run the same dagger concept, and this time they
- 50:45Speaker 2: squeeze it a little bit more and it's an incomplete pass,
- 50:48Speaker 2: you know. And Ratler started front side and came back
- 50:51Speaker 2: to it, So maybe the timing was a little bit
- 50:53Speaker 2: to do with that as well, But overall I thought
- 50:55Speaker 2: that that was like a good you know, we talk
- 50:57Speaker 2: about Drake May learning and getting better play to play.
- 51:00Speaker 2: They didn't get beat by it again, but I see
- 51:03Speaker 2: a lot of open receivers, and I think that when
- 51:06Speaker 2: you look at the pressure rate numbers, that also is
- 51:11Speaker 2: innificate of that, because I do think they're getting pressure
- 51:13Speaker 2: on the quarterback, but it doesn't feel like it's meaningful
- 51:17Speaker 2: pressure because I think that there's space to throw the football.
- 51:20Speaker 1: So I'll go a couple of things. One, I do
- 51:24Speaker 1: think they've had some opportunities to get turnovers that haven't
- 51:26Speaker 1: turned into turnovers and that will help. And Two, I
- 51:32Speaker 1: part of me and I don't necessarily have anything to
- 51:34Speaker 1: base this on other than you know, what our priors were,
- 51:38Speaker 1: but I do wonder if the Saints game was They're
- 51:41Speaker 1: really fast team. We don't have our free safety. We
- 51:45Speaker 1: know we can beat up on their defense. If this
- 51:47Speaker 1: turns into a little bit of a shootout, let's just
- 51:50Speaker 1: not give up big plays. We're gonna play this game
- 51:52Speaker 1: is Ben, don't break, and we'll get because that's just
- 51:54Speaker 1: good coaching, and then we'll get back to what we
- 51:56Speaker 1: do to doing what we do moving forward.
- 51:59Speaker 2: Right, I'm less concerned about because I think they're going
- 52:02Speaker 2: to be game plan oriented and it's going to change
- 52:04Speaker 2: week to week. It just did like it went to
- 52:05Speaker 2: can to man in Buffalo and then zone in New Orleans.
- 52:08Speaker 2: I'm more wondering from a big picture, holistic standpoint, is
- 52:12Speaker 2: it sustainable to be low efficiency against the pass but
- 52:17Speaker 2: keep teams out of the end zone?
- 52:19Speaker 4: What like?
- 52:19Speaker 1: Is that well if they can keep keep keeping teams
- 52:22Speaker 1: out of the end zone, it is like, yeah, if
- 52:24Speaker 1: you're keeping teams out of the end zone, it is
- 52:26Speaker 1: that sustainable. So can you be low efficiency against the
- 52:29Speaker 1: pass and still keep teams out of the end zone?
- 52:31Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 52:32Speaker 1: What was their efficiency against Buffalo?
- 52:34Speaker 2: H Josh Allen was you know average in that game?
- 52:37Speaker 2: So they did they did recover a little bit better.
- 52:39Speaker 1: Against So when they play that's to me, that's the
- 52:42Speaker 1: only real data point we have on their defense because
- 52:44Speaker 1: they nevins. Also the first three games, Carolina game got
- 52:47Speaker 1: out of hand early, and then the Saints game. Well,
- 52:50Speaker 1: I guess it's I shouldn't say it's the only real
- 52:53Speaker 1: data point we have on their defense. I think it's
- 52:55Speaker 1: it's the Bills game or the Saints game. What do
- 52:58Speaker 1: you think is more indicative of what their defense is.
- 53:02Speaker 1: I almost feel like you have to throw the games
- 53:04Speaker 1: without Gonzales out. Yeah, it impacts the way the defense.
- 53:08Speaker 2: It's tough to say because even with gonz like, the
- 53:12Speaker 2: numbers with Gonzalez are not that much better than they
- 53:14Speaker 2: were without him.
- 53:16Speaker 1: You just said they were fine in the Bills game.
- 53:18Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm telling you, like from like the three
- 53:21Speaker 2: game sample versus the three game sample. Okay, I'm not
- 53:25Speaker 2: like their their defense is not like Gonzalez is not
- 53:27Speaker 2: coming into this defense and making this world a difference.
- 53:30Speaker 1: But what I'm telling you is that it's not the
- 53:31Speaker 1: three games with Gonzalz versus three games without like it is,
- 53:34Speaker 1: and it isn't. It's they know Gonzalzo. The first three
- 53:38Speaker 1: games that impacted the defense, the Carolina game we did that.
- 53:40Speaker 1: We came in the next day and said, like, you
- 53:42Speaker 1: got to throw a lot of that game out stat
- 53:44Speaker 1: wise because it was almost all garbage time. Right, So
- 53:47Speaker 1: it's the Bills game was a real competitive game. They've
- 53:50Speaker 1: only played two real competitive games with Christian Gonzalez.
- 53:52Speaker 2: But it wasn't like the Bills game was perfect, Like
- 53:55Speaker 2: they still.
- 53:55Speaker 1: The Bills game wasn't perfect, but was it like was
- 53:57Speaker 1: good good enough? You said they were fun going on,
- 54:00Speaker 1: you said it.
- 54:00Speaker 2: Was good enough, but this game was good enough, Like
- 54:03Speaker 2: they only give up nineteen points.
- 54:05Speaker 1: We just said, efficiency wise, it wasn't good enough.
- 54:08Speaker 2: But that's my.
- 54:08Speaker 1: You're claiming the d the underlying number of efficient. This
- 54:11Speaker 1: is not me knocking the analytics. Is just we're having conversation,
- 54:15Speaker 1: Like the underlying numbers say, even though the points are
- 54:19Speaker 1: low in the Sands game, it's maybe not sustainable. What
- 54:22Speaker 1: did the underlying numbers and the Bills games say, because
- 54:24Speaker 1: they played very differently the same thing. Like okay, well
- 54:27Speaker 1: you had said it was fine, it.
- 54:28Speaker 2: Is fine, but like I'm telling you from like a
- 54:30Speaker 2: big picture standpoint, from all of looking at all of it,
- 54:34Speaker 2: like they right now are not a good pass defense.
- 54:38Speaker 2: And I thought once they got Gonzalez back, Now they
- 54:41Speaker 2: got him back this week, he played this week. Technically,
- 54:43Speaker 2: who knows where his hamstring is? You know it's yeah,
- 54:46Speaker 2: he's been on and off the injury report. You know,
- 54:48Speaker 2: he's questionable coming into this game, Like, who knows really
- 54:51Speaker 2: where he is physically. But the point that I'm trying
- 54:54Speaker 2: to get at is that normally when you see defenses
- 54:58Speaker 2: that are not good at defense the past, it's a
- 55:01Speaker 2: house of cards. Like you hold on in the red zone,
- 55:03Speaker 2: you hold on in the scoring zone in certain weeks,
- 55:06Speaker 2: and other weeks you don't like when they play Tampa
- 55:09Speaker 2: in a couple of weeks, when they even like I
- 55:11Speaker 2: don't think Pennox has been great. But if when they
- 55:12Speaker 2: play Atlanta and they have Bijon and they have Drake
- 55:15Speaker 2: London and they have real weapons that are coming at you,
- 55:18Speaker 2: like I just I don't know if his defense is
- 55:21Speaker 2: a paper tiger right now, and I hope it's not,
- 55:25Speaker 2: but it just it feels a little bit like a
- 55:26Speaker 2: house of cards to me, in the sense that the
- 55:29Speaker 2: numbers from an efficiency standpoint, like this is why I'm
- 55:32Speaker 2: not trying to get into a whole analytics thing with you.
- 55:35Speaker 2: But like this is why things like points and yards
- 55:38Speaker 2: like lack context, right, because like points are something that
- 55:43Speaker 2: is very very situational, Like did they produce in the
- 55:47Speaker 2: red zone where they playing a good enough offense to
- 55:50Speaker 2: sustain offense? Like all these different elements of a game
- 55:52Speaker 2: in the flow of a game.
- 55:54Speaker 1: What does the tape tell you?
- 55:55Speaker 2: It's the same thing. I don't know why you keep
- 55:57Speaker 2: asking me that it's like the same thing, like to
- 55:59Speaker 2: take like they do not defend the pass particularly, well,
- 56:02Speaker 2: that's what everybody's telling you. The coverage is not very
- 56:05Speaker 2: good at thet Is that going to Are they going
- 56:08Speaker 2: to be able to hold teams to twenty points a
- 56:10Speaker 2: game playing pass defense?
- 56:11Speaker 1: I thought outside of Kincaid, which is not insignificant, but
- 56:17Speaker 1: I thought outside of Kinkaid, their pass defense was fine
- 56:20Speaker 1: against the Bills. You know, they weren't the twenty fourteen
- 56:23Speaker 1: Patriots with Reeves and Browner, But I thought the pass
- 56:26Speaker 1: defense was fine. I didn't think it was a negative
- 56:28Speaker 1: of anything was a positive outside of Kincaid. And they
- 56:30Speaker 1: do have to get better at covering tight ends, like
- 56:32Speaker 1: that's my big worry is tight ends and to an
- 56:35Speaker 1: extent running It's it's the non receivers killing them is
- 56:37Speaker 1: what worries mean. You mentioned the Falcons Kyle Pitts and
- 56:40Speaker 1: Bijon Robinson is a great example of this. Even the
- 56:42Speaker 1: Browns in a couple of weeks with David Joku and
- 56:44Speaker 1: Quinn Show Judkins getting it going a little bit. So
- 56:47Speaker 1: you know, was I did not think they covered the
- 56:50Speaker 1: pass as well against the Saints. I kind of think
- 56:53Speaker 1: that was part of the game plan, and so I'm
- 56:55Speaker 1: just interested to I feel like with Gonzales, I feel
- 57:00Speaker 1: like I haven't seen enough to make a definitive decision
- 57:02Speaker 1: of where I'm at with their pass defense.
- 57:05Speaker 2: That's fair. It definitely needs some more sample, I will
- 57:08Speaker 2: say Gonzales, I just if they lose their coverages hasn't
- 57:12Speaker 2: been particularly good, and a lot of it, I would say,
- 57:15Speaker 2: is the linebackers in safeties, which is not going to
- 57:18Speaker 2: fix itself overnight. Like this is the personnel that they have.
- 57:21Speaker 2: I don't think Gonzales, Like I'm not trying to pick
- 57:23Speaker 2: on Gonzalez or pick on even Carlton Davis, like, I
- 57:25Speaker 2: don't think it's them that is like the holistic problem.
- 57:28Speaker 2: It's just that Gonzales has not come back and turn
- 57:31Speaker 2: this into a dominant pass defense. Like maybe we thought
- 57:34Speaker 2: it was going to be with those two corners because
- 57:36Speaker 2: I think that their linebackers and safeties are not good.
- 57:39Speaker 1: So that that's fair too. Like I think that the
- 57:42Speaker 1: coverage on receivers has been better, but they still need
- 57:44Speaker 1: to get better cut the tight ends thing is what
- 57:46Speaker 1: worries me the most.
- 57:48Speaker 2: All right, we're gonna throw to a quick break. When
- 57:50Speaker 2: we come back, we want to talk about the run

- 1:00:55Speaker 2: what it is about the blankets, but they're everywhere. I
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: do want to talk a little bit about the run game.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: I know a lot of people are asking questions about
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: the run game. I think that the hardest part of
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: breaking down tape is breaking down the run game because
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: it's never one thing, Like it's always a bunch of
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: different things on one play that leads to a bad run.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: It's very seldom like I can just look at this
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: and say, this one thing, if they just fix this
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: one thing, then the whole thing will work, right. It's
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: like that really doesn't happen a whole lot with the
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: run games, so it's kind of a different thing every week.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: It's kind of a different thing every play. This game,
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: in particular, the blocking really struggled. I thought that the
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: blocking had been so so in the past five weeks,
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: and the running backs, along with average blocking, were just
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: really bogging them down this game. They only had nineteen
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: total yards before contact on the ground, good nineteen. Rimandre Stevenson,
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: for all of his struggles, had more yards after contact
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: than he did total rushing yards in this game. So
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: they did not block the very well. They had six
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: negative runs or Last week we talked a little bit
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: about how at least they were getting positive yards on
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: every single play. Was not the case this week. They
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: went backwards multiple times in this game. So what's your
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: So my big picture opinion on the run game is
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: that I do think there is a little bit of
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: a chicken or the egg thing going on here with
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: how defenses are defending the Patriots. I still see on
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: film that defenses are extremely aggressive against the Patriots under
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: center in particular, you know, run blitzink, stunting, slanting, gap penetrations,
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: like different things that teams use to blow up runs.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: I'd still feel like teams are doing that a lot
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: against the Patriots. So does that continue? Does the pass
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: game success cause them to drop back? That's sort of
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: the chest match of it, if you will. But they
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: also just have issues in the run game, and they're
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: not a particularly good run offense. Like I'm not saying
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: it's all that, it's definitely a little bit.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's a lot of things. You hope
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: the past game success opens it up a little bit.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: That's part of it. I do wonder if it becomes
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: mental at a point, like it felt like improving the
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: run game was the point of emphasis for them last week,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: which is why it was so disappointing that because I
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: said this last week like the run game hadn't been bad,
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: it just hadn't been good. Yeah, it's kind of like
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: borderline functional, and this week it was bad. So you know,
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: where do you go from there? We do the deep
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: diyes on this show, But isn't there an element Evan?
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: And we talked about this earlier in the year, right
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: when the defense was having trouble and they had all
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: those mistackles, and remember we were talking about Roberts Plane
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: and it was like, yeah, you know, there's not really
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: a schematic answer. He just needs to play better.
- 1:03:50Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: I do think there's an element of that with the
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: run game for the Backs and the line that we've
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: seen Ramandree Stevenson play better than this. We've seen all
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: be it not at this level. We've seen Travon Henderson
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: play better than this. We've seen you know, Mike and
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: Win who I thought had a rough game in this one,
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: We've seen him play better than this. We've seen again
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: at another level. But just looking at the you know,
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: the tape and all that, Will Campbell, Jared Wilson, who
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: have had their moments, but be better than this run blocking.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: And I just do think there is some natural internal
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: room for improvement. And I go back just Blaine s.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: Blaine did it. He had more mistackles than made tackles
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: for the first two weeks. Something happened. He clicked the
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: switch and the coaching staff and with like I don't
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: know who, No, he figured it out right and he's
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: been really good since. And can you get the same
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: kind of bounce back from the run game? Where I
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: just think there's guys right now who have proven they
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: can play better football, and do they get back to
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: their level and if they do that, it's going to
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: open up a lot.
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: So we've talked a lot about the running backs last week.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: They only forced two misstackles the entire game. This week. Yeah,
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: at the running back position. Now, when you're getting contacted
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: behind or at the line of scrimmage or to break tackles,
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: right if.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: Able talked about this on Monday, that there's an element
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: of maybe the ball security thing is weighing a little more.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: I think that's certainly weighing with Remandre. I think with
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: Travon Henderson, what you're still seeing is just like a
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: lack of pacing or patience on his runs, and he's
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: just kind of running full speed into the line of
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: scrimmage and not really letting the blocking develop and missing
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: cutback lanes as a result, Like I think that there's
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: more meat on the bone in some of these runs
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: by the back. Certainly, I thought blocking wise, I look
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: at really two positions on the interior. This was not
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: a great game for Garrett Bradberry. I thought that he
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: struggled with a bigger front for New Orleans, especially in
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: the middle. I saw him after the game. It was cool.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: Old friend Godshaw had a nice game. Brian Breeze is
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: a really good player. Bullard really gave them a lot
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: of problems inside. I also did not think this was
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: a particularly good game for Jared Wilson, but that really
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: struggled in this game on Sunday, so Campbell had some
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: misses too. I thought, really the only guy that I
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: felt like was okay in the run game was Morgan Moses.
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: I thought the other four guys had all a hand
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: in the run game. Being a struggle. I don't know,
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: Like to your point, I don't know if there's a
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: fix for it other than just reps and time on
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: task and hoping that some of the defenses maybe adjust
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: and back off the line of scrimmage a little bit
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: now that Drake may has arrived and like just let's
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: see where this goes throughout the course of the season.
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: Now if you want to get a little bit more
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: extreme and start making some personnel changes or tweaks to
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: the personnel. Oh one last thing. Yeah, their lack of
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: like a true battering ram full back I think is
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: hurting them as well, especially short yardage. No disrespect whatsoever
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: for Jack Westover, but he's just not He's not devil,
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: and he's not Yakub Johnson.
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: Would be a sneaky trade deadline edition for me.
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: They don't They don't have like a true uh brock
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: Lampy the shind them up and you know, mu him
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: down fullbacks right like, they don't have one of those
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: guys right now. I think that that's hurting them as well.
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: This is not an overly physical group right now up front.
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: So I was a little bit nitpicky on Campbell in
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: this game. I think The main reason why is because
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: like he's the one guy that like he's the one
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: road grader right, Like he's the one guy up front
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: that I really feel like eats glass and is tough
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: and his physical and wants to set tone and all
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: that kind of stuff. It's a rookie, it's a lot
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: task of him early on in his career, but like
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: he kind of needs to bring that element because I
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: don't think that the other guys on the line are
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: going to bring that element. Left guard is a position
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: I'm wondering about. Uh, I've been testing you about this
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: off the air. I see Ben Brown sitting there on
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: the bench. I thought Ben Brown blocked with a lot
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: of physicality and effort against Carolina in the game that
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: he started for an injured Jared Wilson. I am not
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: out on Jared Wilson. I think Jared Wilson has a
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: bright future. I just think that bright future is at center,
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: and he's just a little small and lacks the play
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: strength at guard, especially against some of these bigger defensive
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: lines to be effective in the run game. It's a
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: little bit twenty twenty one. Ted Carris to me, like
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: Mike on Winne was the better player probably had a
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: higher ceiling, but he was a right guard, not a
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: left guard, and he was young, And like, is there
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: a world where we see Ben Brown at some point
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: at left guard, not to you know, rule out Jared
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: Wilson for the rest of his career, Like no one's
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: burying the kid. I just wonder if maybe they would
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: be more physical and a little bit better as a
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: run blocking unit if Ben Brown was in there instead
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: of Jared Wilson.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: I also wonder, you know, I didn't think Garrett Bradbury
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: had his best game in this game either. Do you
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: make that switch and you just move Jared Wilson over
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: now mid season switched to center for rookies not going
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: to be easy, hard and so maybe you have to
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: do it in stages and maybe it's Ben Brown in
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: and then you start working Jared whatever have you. But
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: you know, I think Ben Brown had a good showing
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: in that last game, so that the coaches have something
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: to go off of. I don't think it's imminent, because
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: I do think they want to develop these young players.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: They look, I did this rant or this thing at
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: the beginning of the year. They have what six seven
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: rookies and starting positions right. They want to develop the kids.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: That's clearly a point of emphasis for them, and there
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: is something to be said for having play through it.
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: But I do think if it gets to a point
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: where the run game's non functional, especially once teams start
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: respecting the past more and kind of daring the Patriots
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: to run, you have to talk about making a change.
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: But the other element of it is past protection has
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: been so good. Do you want to start poking around
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: and making changes or do you just say, look, we've
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: got Drake May protected, he's slinging it. We can figure
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: out way to compensate for a weak link in the
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: run game.
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: So I don't love moving Jared Wilson this year to
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: center because to your point about the pass protection, this
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: battery of Drake May and Garrett Bradberry is working on
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: the whole for the most part. I wouldn't mess with
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: Drake May, And to me, changing his center is messing
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: with him, Like, just let him be. The center's working,
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: the protection is working. Let's not throw that off. I
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: just if we're talking personnel, and then we'll talk about
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: the running backs here in a second. But if we're
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: talking personnel on the offensive line, Wilson out Brown in
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: is really the only move to me that they can
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: really make, and maybe that would help their run blocking.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: It might make them worse than pass protection slightly, yeah,
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: but maybe it would help them in their run game.
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: I don't think that this is design poorly. I don't
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: think there's tails. I don't think that there's tendencies like
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: they're right now. You know, first down run rate, they're
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: right smack dab in the middle of the pack. There's
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: sixteenth in the league. And first down run rate. They
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: do not run on second and long very often. That's
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: always one of those other tells that's not a very
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: good one. They they've been fine from a play calling perspective.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: The other thing about the run game that frustrated me
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: out of this game, ALPS was the gold go situation. Like, yeah,
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: I'm okay, if you're not a dominant run game, like
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: if this isn't you know, Buffalo, Baltimore, Detroit level run game, fine, likes,
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: that's fine, but when you get down inside the two
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: yard line, you have to be able to run the
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: ball in, like you have to be able to do
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: that first run play. They just run lead again. This
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: is where the full back thing comes into play, like
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: they don't really have a full back that's just going
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: to kind of battering Ram through the line and just
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: clear out of space for the running back. But also
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: Jared Wilson and Will Campbell are on a double team
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: at the point of attack, and they don't make they
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: don't get any ground, they don't you displace it all
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: and so it's just stuffed. The next run, they try
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: to run power on the goal line, which is a
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: tough one in my opinion, but they try to run
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: power and Buller just shoots the gap when Jared Wilson
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: polls Will Campbell's supposed to cut him. But it's a
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: tough block, right, He's got to get him down. It's
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: a tough block. He misses the block there. So you
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: just would like to see if they're not going to
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: be good. They're not going to be an explosive game,
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: run game. They have to be good. Situation.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: You got to get that yard, yeah, you just you
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: have to get that yard. And to your probably again,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: do you start putting We kind of toyed with this
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: idea back in the spring on the goal and you're
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: not doing this full field like on the goal line
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: you start using like Kyros Tonga as a fullback, just
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: somebody who can move bodies. It's not a bad idea
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: and something like that, you know, I you got to
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: be able to get that one yard.
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: Yeah, or you know, maybe you put the eligible tackle
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: in the backfield instead of putting the eligible tackle eligib
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: tackle excuse me, on the line of scrimmage, right, and
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: like you use a bigger body there. The last thing
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: on the run game, of course, I'm sure we're gonna
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: get a lot of trade deadline questions and stuff like
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: that coming up the running back position. You know, I've
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: read off the stats last week. It's all of them
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: kind of stayed the same. You know, they're they're down
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: near the bottom of the league and yards after contact
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: avoided tackle rate. They don't break any tackles. So, just
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: to put it in Layman's terns, they don't break any tackles.
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: They don't break any tackles. They don't allow runs to develop,
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: they don't set up blocks, they don't cut back. The
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: running backs are a problem. The running backs have not
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: been very good. This really is a tough one too,
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: because I don't know if that's going to get organically better.
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: The blocking I could see getting better with more reps
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: and more time on task. I think the running backs
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: are kind of in a bad situation right now. Do
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: you make a trade? You know, do do you try
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: to pull off a trade? I'm not necessarily talking about
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: like Derrick Henry or like a you know, a huge
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: splash trade, but do you make a trade to get
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: another veteran running back in here that that could maybe help?
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: Well, sorry, it's Distracted's Mike alstot highlights on the TV.
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: Get yeah, can can we get.
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: Him in here?
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: I I don't think if they're not gonna use Carel Jennings,
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: they need another guy. I mean, you just need three
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: running backs to get through a season. Yeah, So in
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: that case, yes, you know, further up the depth chart,
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: there's people talking about Breece Hall, Like, if it's Breece
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: Hall for a third or fourth, I would do that.
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: I just don't think the Jets are doing that in
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: the division, even though he's a rental. I wouldn't be
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: opposed to it. I wouldn't be opposed to it, certainly.
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: And that's not the one thing I will say. I've
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: seen people throughout trades like, well, if you trade Remandre
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: and a pick. You're not trading Remandre Stevenson one and rimondres.
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: There's a ton of credit for this. He's not running
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: the ball well right now. He's doing a lot of
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: other little things very well, and that's why he's staying
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: on the field. He's pass blocking.
- 1:14:57Speaker 8: Well.
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: You look at some of the blocks setting downfield. Mike
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: Rabel's talked about this. Following the ball on the Pop
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: Douglas touchdown, he gets down the field right and sets
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: that block yep. And it kind of reminds me of
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: Pop Douglas where Pop Douglas was struggling with ball in
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: his hands, ended up in a reduced role, found other
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: ways to contribute, and it comes back around and look,
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: he's rewarding. He has a big game. Should have had
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: over one hundred yards in this game if not for
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: the officials. So does you know does that happen with
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: Randre Stevenson because he's keeping himself on the field right
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: now by doing all these other little things. One, you
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: just need the depth they need to add a running back.
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: They do not need to replace running backs. And two,
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: Romondre Stevenson's doing other things. Well, I'm not trading Ramondre
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: Stevenson for running back, Like it's you're moving a pick,
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: you're getting a back. That's what this is. So but
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: I would look at it.
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they have to look at it just
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: from a depth standpoint, like if you're not at the
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: offense and you just need a body, I do think
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: they could maybe do a little bit better than just
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: a body. But it just I said this yesterday, like
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: it shocks me, Like Rico Dwell just went off for
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: like two hundred yards in Carolina, Like it's not like
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: you need, you know, prime Derrick Henry to come in
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: here and save you, Like if you just have somebody
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: that is just playing at a decent level at that position,
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: you know. I know it's kind of funny for me
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: to come at it and be like they need a
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: running back because I'm usually the anti running back guy,
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: but they need a league average running back. Yeah, I
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: think Remandre is probably a lead average running back at
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: all the other things that you brought up right, or maybe.
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: Above league average those, but he's not running the ball.
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: Let me ask you one more thing. And I'm not
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: saying this would be because I've seen people say this
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: as like a permanent thing, and I wouldn't do it
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: as a permanent thing, but I mean they did it
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: earlier this year with Antonio Gibson. Would you use Rmandra
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: Stevenson as a fullback?
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: I mean, like, I guess you could if you want to.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: Go like offset with Travon Henderson, not all the time,
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: but putting it in as a wrinkle.
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I don't know what that really solves, though,
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: I like you maybe have some cool plays off of it.
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: As you talked about Jack Westovers, Maybe not that guy.
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: I mean he's not going to like lead through the
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: a gap and block the line center.
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean he's pass blocking pretty well right now.
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: I know it's different, but maybe a powerful guy.
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: I don't know if you want to doing that, I'm
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: gonna get hurt.
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: I think it's in any way to contribute to the
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: team kind of thing.
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: They could do a little bit more with the scheme druns.
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: Like I think that they've kind of put the Drake
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: May design runs away because well, a like their passing
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: game doesn't really need it. But be I also think
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: that you know, he's probably a better scrambler than he
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: is like a natural design runner. I think that's kind
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: of what they've found in that regard. But whether it's motion,
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: whether it's jet motion or sweeps, or you know, getting
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: a little bit more production out of the screen game.
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: Like the screen game is just an extension of the
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: running game. It's just the passing games version of the
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: running game. Like, so could you get a little bit
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: more out of like your wide receiver screens and things
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: like that. I think that there might be some ways
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: that they could dress up the running game just a
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: little bit better, yea, and not just run it right
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: at people. But at the end of the day, you
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: also have to be able to traditionally run the ball
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: to be a good rush offense. This is something that
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: you know, not to make a buffalo again, but like
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: this is something that Bill's learned Josh Allen, Like, you
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: can't your run game cannot be solely reliant on the quarterback,
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: Like you have to be able to line up under
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: center and hand the ball off to James Cook and
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: be a good traditional rush offense. Like you can't just
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: put it all on scrambles and design runs. I don't
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: understand how that is. Is a smirk, Like Josh Allen's
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: still great at it, Like I.
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: Know, but because no, my issue is not primarily with
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: Josh Allen's with the Bills and them misusing him and
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: people not understanding the context of that.
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: Should I read this email about Bill's catch twenty two? Yeah, so, Evan,
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: is this Bill's catch twenty two? Because I thought I
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: was watching Patriots catch twenty two. The Bills are faltering
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: in struggling, even if their wins they aren't weren't perfect.
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: Just like how Bart defends his take on Josh Allen
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: bad years, definitely defen defending Josh Allen newgoat take. That's
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: Kyle from Penbrook. Kyle, I'm just not counting chickens before
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: they hatch. My friend, we're six weeks into the season.
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: You want to bury the Bills playing good football right now? Yes?
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: Or no?
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: No, they're not playing good football right now. I also
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: watched the Patriots play a bad football early on in
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: the season for years and come out the other side
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: and we end.
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: Up in.
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: Day had two. I'm sorry. You can love Josh Allen
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: all you want.
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: He's not.
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: I'm just saying that, like let mcderbert, certainly Bill Belichi.
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: Also, last year the Bills were three and two, so
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: so let just make this point, just everybody calm down.
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: I will say I saw somebody make this point that
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: the Bills have lost back to back games in like
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: five or six consecutive seasons or something like that. They
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: keep doing it. But last year, when they were two
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: years ago when they did it, or last year when
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: they did it, I guess I should say. They beat
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: the Dolphins by twenty one, and then they beat the
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: Jaguars by thirty seven, and then they lost back to
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: back in Week's four and five to the Ravens in Texas.
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: We're both good teams this year. Leading into their back
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: to back losses, they barely beat the Dolphins. They barely
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: beat the Saints. This is not Bill's catchwaying two, and
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: then they lost to the Patriots, who might be a
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: good team in the Falcons who might be a good team,
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: but aren't like the Ravens last year.
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: So the context is a little different. Okay, just I
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: think you know, I know, Ile Dermott, he was teasing us.
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: We have forty minutes left in the show. We're going
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: to do some calls and emails now, I promise. I
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: also want to talk a little bit about this Titans game.
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: A little bit of juice with were able going back
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: to Tennessee and.
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: The change players in the league is on that.
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: So we'll talk a little bit about that. Brent Morquare
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: awake makes well. First of all, I just want to
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: I'm reading the brunt read because they sent us a
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: little care package and I really do like the stuff
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: that they sent us, and I want to give them
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: a ton of credit for that. So work where it

- 1:21:22Speaker 2: have been waiting. Let's get to these calls. Patty is
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: an agu on what's up? Patty?
- 1:21:28Speaker 9: What's up?
- 1:21:28Speaker 3: Guys?
- 1:21:28Speaker 8: Can you hear me?
- 1:21:29Speaker 7: Okay?
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: Yes, all right?
- 1:21:32Speaker 4: So what I really wanted to do was what I loved.
- 1:21:38Speaker 4: What I really loved about what what I saw on
- 1:21:41Speaker 4: Sunday wasn't the officiating. But what I really loved what
- 1:21:45Speaker 4: I saw on Sunday was how late in the game,
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: it was the possession before their final possession where they
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: closed the game out, when they got into these crazy
- 1:21:53Speaker 4: ass like third and long situations, they weren't running draws
- 1:21:58Speaker 4: like Josh, I think, recognize the situation and recognize that
- 1:22:02Speaker 4: my quarterbacks got a big arm and our guys are
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: getting open against these guys, and they went for it.
- 1:22:08Speaker 4: And I mean that's something I don't think that we've seen,
- 1:22:11Speaker 4: even like in the Brady era. You know, a lot
- 1:22:15Speaker 4: of times when they can know these third and long situations,
- 1:22:18Speaker 4: they would just like run draws or run screens or
- 1:22:20Speaker 4: run just basically play it safe. And I just I
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: love the aggression and I kind of hope that continues.
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: And I wanted to see what you guys had to
- 1:22:29Speaker 4: think about that. And I'll take it off there.
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: Thanks Patty. Well it helps at the quarterbacks. One of
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: the best laid down quarterbacks in the NFL through six weeks.
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: One of the best deep ball thars.
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: Yeah, so this to me is another if you want
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: to like talk about Feathers and Drake May's cap through
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: the first six weeks of the season. His production in
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: obvious passing situations and his production on late downs is
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: just off the charts good right now. So he is
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: third in the league and EPA on third and fourth
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: down brock Perty, you know, hopefully he'll come back eventually,
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: and Daniel Jones is number one. And that statistic, their
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: success rate or drop back success rate on third and
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: fourth down is fifty two point six percent. So the
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: reason why they are opening it up on third and
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: fourth down is because Drake May is letting them, you know,
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: Drake May is elevating them in those situations. Now, one
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: of the plays on Sunday when they went for it
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: on that fourth down, it is so refreshing to see
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: us Stefan Diggs just win so easily on that route
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: like that is like with the pocket clean pocket Digs
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: wins clickly on the slant like that is literally it
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: might as well have been routes on air, like they
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: were just out there playing pitch and catch like it's
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: the middle of August in training camp. Drake May had
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: nobody around him. Diggs was wide open on the slant
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: got Beatman coverage. So it's a bit, a little bit
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: of everything, of course, but Drake May's efficiency on third
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: and four down is some of the best in the
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: league right now. And his efficiency in obvious passing situations
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: like expected passes situations. He's in number one rated quarterback
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: in the league when they're expected to pass, so that
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: that's a big reason why those things are happening. I mean,
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: some of the numbers on Drake May, and you know,
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: I could nerd out about all this for the rest
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: of the show. Some of the numbers on Drake May
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: are stupid, like it's insane how well he is playing.
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: And I would say, all like the great quarterbacks play
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: great on third down, Like that's really where that's the
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: money down.
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: For the reason quarterback.
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's right up there with the best in
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: the league. Sean is in Vancouver. What's up, Sean.
- 1:24:41Speaker 9: Well, Stevenson didn't fumble. Now that's not something we need
- 1:24:45Speaker 9: to celebrate. But one thing I noticed is it looked
- 1:24:48Speaker 9: like they were like really mauling him and trying to
- 1:24:51Speaker 9: force the fumble and he didn't. So I want to
- 1:24:54Speaker 9: give him prompts for actually maybe make an adjustment on
- 1:24:58Speaker 9: that of the run game not working like, yeah, they're
- 1:25:04Speaker 9: they're not doing a good job. But yeah, like you said,
- 1:25:07Speaker 9: the teams the opponents are are really you know, playing
- 1:25:12Speaker 9: the run. There's stuff in the box and they're they're blitzing. Well,
- 1:25:15Speaker 9: one play that worked early was a play action uh
- 1:25:19Speaker 9: to pop. Now maybe they could do more play action
- 1:25:21Speaker 9: like have that uh X plays five times for play
- 1:25:25Speaker 9: action instead of once and and maybe either you know,
- 1:25:28Speaker 9: teams will the opponents will will have to pay for
- 1:25:31Speaker 9: that or they'll adjust. Now the officiating, I'm wondering that
- 1:25:35Speaker 9: one solution on that could be hiring these these refs
- 1:25:38Speaker 9: that I'm full time. So they study and they watch tape,
- 1:25:42Speaker 9: they go to practice, they just get better. And one
- 1:25:46Speaker 9: one last question, how do we find out the game
- 1:25:49Speaker 9: day captains? Where where can we go on the on
- 1:25:51Speaker 9: the web to know who that will be?
- 1:25:53Speaker 10: All right, I'll leave it out there.
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: Thanks, thanks Sean. Yeah, we should probably do a better
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: job of keeping track of those. Last week, it was
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: kind Toga he did not go out for the coin toss.
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: I Able made a joke about that in postgame, saying
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: that he maybe was a little bit nervous to go
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: out there on the coin toss. But I love Caiusakiris.
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: Tonga's a beast. Yeah, guy deserves a ton of credit
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: for what he's done in the run defense. So we
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: can do a better job sean of keeping track of those.
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: Mark is in Connecticut. What's up? Mark?
- 1:26:25Speaker 11: Going on?
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: Not much?
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: How we doing.
- 1:26:30Speaker 8: Well?
- 1:26:31Speaker 11: I think the NFL finally put the officiating on notice.
- 1:26:35Speaker 11: I saw some things on Facebook and some other webs
- 1:26:40Speaker 11: that we're saying that the NFL is definitely gonna do
- 1:26:43Speaker 11: an investigation on that officiating group, because I mean, that
- 1:26:46Speaker 11: was just probably the worst officiating crew I've ever seen.
- 1:26:50Speaker 11: And I've been watching football for probably thirty years now,
- 1:26:53Speaker 11: and I got to say that that's just terrible, the
- 1:26:55Speaker 11: terrible product that they're putting on the field. But other
- 1:26:59Speaker 11: than that, the other thing is can we get more
- 1:27:03Speaker 11: designed type of I just need to get more innovated
- 1:27:07Speaker 11: in the run game because we know that they're stacking
- 1:27:09Speaker 11: the blox with eight in the block, So if they're
- 1:27:12Speaker 11: going to keep doing that, can we get like some
- 1:27:14Speaker 11: James White type of screenplays going or something. I Mean,
- 1:27:17Speaker 11: I'm just thick of every time we're going up the gut,
- 1:27:20Speaker 11: we're going up the gun, but we're losing yards and
- 1:27:22Speaker 11: we're or we're getting nowhere, So can we just try
- 1:27:26Speaker 11: and get a little more creative?
- 1:27:27Speaker 9: Thanks guys, Love you guys.
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: Thanks Mark, Thanks for the call. Yeah, I definitely think
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: that calls for more creativity in the run game are
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: fair because they're so bad running the ball, they got
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: to do something different than what they're doing.
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: It's interesting. I think that their run game just by design,
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: like they're running a lot of duo or gap where
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: they're just kind of getting double teams on the line
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: of scrimmage and trying to push the line of scrimmage.
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: And they've had some good reps in duo even in
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: this game early on in the game. But that scheme
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: inherently does lend itself to guys getting up to the
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: second level, like blockers getting up from the first to
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: the second level. So a lot of what you're seeing
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: when you run duo is like three four yards in
- 1:28:10Speaker 2: the cloud of dust because it's just a displacement that
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: they're getting from the double teams. And then there's no
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: like the linebackers are unblocked, so like they're just free
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: to make the play once they can kind of sift
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: through the trash, and that's where like the running backs,
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: breaking tackles and things like that come into play. But
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: that's why you're seeing like a lot of like runs
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: up the middle is because they are running up the
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: middle by design. It's a good question. I think there
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: are some schematic things that they could do, certainly like
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: more from the gun, you know, with some of their
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: gun package and their motion packages that they could get
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: more involved in. I don't think that this coaching staff
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: is quite in the AVP school of like we're gonna
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: we're not gonna run drake because we want to keep
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: them healthy. I don't think that they're quite there, but
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: I do think that they're There is a balance there
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: where if you start letting him run around and start
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: unleashing him in that regard, you know, it is a
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: juice worth the squeeze, right, Like is it worth it
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: if he starts to get you know, added up, some
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: body blows and starts to take some hits, Like is
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: that really worth it to be a little bit more
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: productive in the ground. That's that's something that you always have.
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: To say, you know, you talked about earlier. There's you know,
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: I think everybody's looking for. And I you talked about
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: earlier with the Bills. I've talked about this with Bills
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: for a long time. Like it just felt like whoever
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: the Bills offensive coordinator was was always getting criticized because
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: they were trying to find that that magic equilibrium of
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: how much do you run the quarterback where to benefit
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: but not too much that he gets hurt and now
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: your offense is lacking because the quarterback's playing banged up.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: I don't know that that equilibrium honestly exists. Yeah, I
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: don't know that there is a perfect number. I air
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: on the side of don't run him, and that doesn't
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: mean run him zero times. But I'd rather run him
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: not enough than run him too much, because if you're
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: running him not enough, at least he's still healthy. You know,
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: I think that goal line situation, for instance, right that
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: the Patriots had. Your run game's not good. You want
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: to mix in maybe like a read option or QB
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: power there obviously the quarterback sneaks right the two point
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: conversion things like that. You know, second in seven in
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: the first quarter, early in a drive, Why do you
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: need your quarterback take a hit?
- 1:30:22Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: Like it I'd rather just figure out how to get
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: the run game going. I'm with you there on you know,
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: short yardage, goal line situations though gone out of it.
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: You know to like fourth and too late in the game.
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: You can you can kill the clock.
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: Like sure, I want to throw a zone read in
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: there or something.
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: High impact situation.
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: Yeah, here's another email, Chirpin at us. Alexis is from Barton,
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: Poland have you stopped underrating Drake London in the pre
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: draft process? When TET was getting Drake London comps with
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: high end comps of T Higgins, it was flabbergasted because
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: in no world is Higgins better than London. Also, I
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: wrote in on Catch twenty two saying how DK is
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: overrated in one of the players that I had over
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: him was London Barth and you scoffed at it. But
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: I don't think that there are many people that would
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: take DK over London. Drake London has gotten, uh has
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: broken out here. Maybe he didn't break out the wrong word. Uh.
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: I have respect now for Drake London. He's a good player.
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: He's gotten.
- 1:31:16Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: He's caught my eye, especially watching him in primetime this weekend.
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: That guy's a beast. He's a good football player. He's
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: probably like a top ten receiver in the league. Bart,
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: you were right, we were wrong. That's big of me.
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: I don't normally do that. There you go.
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: No, he's been really good and I think you're seeing
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: We talked about this a lot with Tep McMillan, that
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: the league became so speed driven that these guys that
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: are really technically skilled but don't run a four to
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: three maybe get you know, get overlooked. And yeah, obviously,
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: you know, I think that our comp to from Drake
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: London to Tech McMillan still stands. We were maybe just
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: a little too low on both of them. Yeah, cop
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: works out just not the way we thought it would.
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: But I think it's great. I love to see a
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: player that maybe isn't the you know, the most. I
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: don't even want to say he's not athletically gifted because
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: he's you know, he's not changes direction. Well, that's right,
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: he's not a track sprinter. That shouldn't be the all
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: there is to playing wide receiver. And it kind of
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: felt like the league was going in that direction. The
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: fast and guys right, and Drake London is showing that
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: there's more than one way to play the position, which
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: is a good thing you want there to be. You know,
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: people used to joke you stand Randy Moss next to
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: Wes Welker. You know, it's hard to believe those two
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: guys play the same position, but they do. I think
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: that's part of what makes football so great, is the
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: specialization of it. So love seeing guys like that succeed.
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: So I will fully admit that my Drake London takes
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: in the past, especially in his draft class or Nikhil
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: Harry PTSD, I just don't big you know, physical jump
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: ball receivers. Now London has turned into a much different
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: kind of player than that. Like London is a good
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: route runner, London gets open Like I'm not trying to
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: put London in that category, but when you're evaluating guys
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: out of the draft and he runs like a you know,
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: low four five and he's like, you know, not really
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: known for his separation, Like I always just get a
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: little bit nervous with those types of guys in the
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: Patriots specifically because of their lack of success in that
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: archetype in that position. But Drake London has definitely proved
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: me wrong. I wasn't overly high on him even coming out,
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: and he's been much better than I expected. He's a
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: good player. We are getting a bunch of questions Alex
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: about needs and stuff like that. That's how you know
- 1:33:30Speaker 2: that this is a draft show and this is an
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: offseason show. Is that people, despite the fact that the
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: Patriots are four and two and currently leading the AFC East,
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: they want us to talk about twenty twenty six in
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: the needs on this football team. So he's asked for
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: the five biggest that's a lot, let's get.
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: Let's do three on this show, you know, projecting ahead
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: a little bit, so I will say this, I am
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: I nuts that I'm kind of taking wide receiver out
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: of the big three knees conversation, No, because if Kaishan
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: Bo's going to play this way, you know, I know
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: Diggs is thirty one, but they still look Kyle Williams,
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: who they haven't used in I'm not saying it's not
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: a need, but I look at it getting a premier
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: edge rusher and this looks like a really good edge class.
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: And not all these guys are going to be there
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: for where the Patriots are picking, but Arvel Reese, ruben
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: Bain Denise Dennis Sutton like they're going to push some
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: other guys down. I think I think you might get
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: a long way to go. You might get like a
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: top ten pick caliber edge rusher in the late teens
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: in this draft, just because I think that position has
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: a chance. We'll see who comes out and all that
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: has a chance to be really loaded. I would say
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: the same for right tackles, this looks like a really
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: good tackle draft. In particularly really good right tackle draft.
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: Morgan mos has been solid, but we know the deal
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: with his age and all of that, and you know,
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: whether it's Maui Goa, I still got to get that
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: name down from Miami. You know, Utah has got a
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: couple of good tackles that both have experience playing both ways. Uh,
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: Caleb Lomu, I believe is there they're right tackle this year.
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: You know, those are probably the two biggest needs. And
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: then some whether it's a linebacker or a safety. There's
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: multiple ways you could go about this, and it would
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: depend on what they do in for agency and what
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: happens with Kyle Duggar and things like that. But like
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: somebody who can cover tight ends and rush the passer,
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: and whether that's Harold Perkins. I know you had your
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: theory that Caleb Downs might fall in the draft all
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: the way he's playing Evan, I just that's it. He's
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: got to be a top five player to be fair.
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: My theory was more likely. Let's say the Patriots are
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: picking like eleventh. Yeah right, well here's They're gonna be
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: probably better than picking eleven, So it's probably so all right.
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: But I had this thought the other day, and we
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: can bring this back to this year kind of like
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: they they made their run in because one of the
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: questions I get now is how is this different than
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: twenty twenty one. They had a rookie quarterback, he played well,
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: and then what happened that let go of the rope
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: and fell apart? Are wondering, now, Drake May is better
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: than mac jones lot, But you know some of that
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: was you look at their off seasons in twenty twenty
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: two and twenty twenty three. They didn't do much after
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: a big year in twenty one. Now, I don't know
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: that they need to spend the way they spent last year.
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: You're not going to do that every year. You're not
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: gonna be the highest spending team every year In a
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: salary cap league, but you do want to stay aggressive
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: and keep keep the pedal of the metal parts of
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: this roster. This is six weeks, since this is all
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: very much subject to change, is it fair to say
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: parts of the roster are further along than we may
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: be expected at the beginning of the year.
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that, you know, So just on the
- 1:36:30Speaker 2: wide receiver thing real quick. Yeah, like when you have
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: a great quarterback, all of a sudden the receivers look
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: a little bit better. I think that's happening now. Is
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: there still a is there still like a big picture
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: need for like that true deep number one alpha receiver
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: to play alongside Diggs? Like yeah, Like no one is
- 1:36:49Speaker 2: saying that if aj Brown wants to reunite with Mike
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: Rabel that we're going to say no thanks. Like no
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: one is saying, but here's what here's my But is
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: it like a thing that you need to throw assets
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: at in the offseason and it's like all the like
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: like it has been the.
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: Specifically first round pick right right, so it's more much so.
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: But let's even if they want to receive it, right So,
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: cause i I'm like, where does your where would you
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: put your Entyson in this offense? Where'd you put Carnell
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: Tait in this offense?
- 1:37:12Speaker 8: Right?
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: Or you want to talk about it at the edge,
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: maybe they get aggressive, Maybe they really like dds, you know,
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: maybe they really like Ruben Band's gonna be top five picks,
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: so he probably doesn't apply to this. But should we like,
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: how much are we going to talk about trading up
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: this offseason? Yeah, it's positing up to the draft like
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: that would kind of be striking while the iron's hot
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: is okay, maybe you don't like going into the year.
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: That's what Houston did.
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: You looked at it and it was like, Okay, they're
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: probably gonna need another year where they hit on five
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: or six draft picks. Now, maybe not, and that doesn't
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: mean that they needed They can hit on zero like
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: they have to hit on some. But do you need
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: to be finding those value guys later on or in
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: two years? Right if you involve future picks, or do
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: we start talking about them moving up from you know,
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: wherever they end up sixteen seventeen, eighteen nineteen two, train
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: up to the fringe top ten and get one of
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: these edge rushers that falls like if the season ended today,
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: we'd be wondering why the season ended on October fifteenth,
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: But if the season ended today, that would I'd kind
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: of be making that argument that like, let's see where
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: the board falls after the combine. But if this edge
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: rusher class, if the meat of this class is going
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: to be like eight to twelve thirteen, and the Patriots
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: are sitting there at seventeen, go up and get your guy,
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: you can maybe blow some assets on that.
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: So quickly to answer the question more directly, if it's me,
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: I'm focusing on the spine of the team still, so
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: in the middle of the field. I do understand again,
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: like if aj Brown wants out of Philadelphia and he
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: wants to come here to reunite with Mike Rabel and
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: play with Drake May, I am, I will drive. I
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: will pick him up at the airport.
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: And I said take a first round pick.
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: Maybe, but I'm just saying like, I'll pick me up
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: at the airport myself. But with that being said, this
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: team right now, I look at it defensively, edge rusher, linebacker, safety,
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: I still think are really positions that they need to
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: hit on. Like if you really wanted to say, like,
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: what is the weakest positions of the team running back, linebacker, safety,
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: and I don't think it's particularly close now, edge rusher.
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: They have the depth, but they don't have that top guy. Yeah,
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: they don't have a top do I don't. Jason and
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: Land are nice players, they're just not It's not Miles Garrett.
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: I'm with Ed rusherm kind of where I've been with
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: receiver the last few years, which is either take a
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: guy at the top or like don't or take a
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: real project late Like I don't need them using a
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: they don't need to try to find josh Uche. Yeah,
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: no offense to josh U Chip like that. Like fiftieth
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: fh overall pick, that's gonna come in and be a
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: complimentary guy. Take that top by the way real quick,
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: because you said it. We are probably going to be
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: talking running back in the draft. It's probably going to
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: be a power back. There are some the crackhead running back.
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: There are some running backs that crack heads in this
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: they're gonna eclipped.
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: Yeah, there's some.
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: Uh, some guys that crackhead. Who's the Notre Dame kid
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: Jeremiah Love, Yeah, Nick Singleton, Jonah Coleman from Washington is awesome.
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: If you've seen him.
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's where I would focus. I think they
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: are good enough at receiver right now. Again, like everybody
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: could use the number one guy, but I think they're
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: good enough with the way Drake may is playing that
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: that that's not like we need to throw assets.
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: No, you're not gonna draft so Jeremiah Love might be
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: first round pick, You're not gonna They're not there yet.
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: Especially after taking Henderson at the top of the second.
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: Do they do another top one hundred back and maybe
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: in the second or third, Like.
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: I wonder if and not to like drive them to
- 1:40:40Speaker 2: the airport, but like I wonder if it's a veteran
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: back in for Andre.
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: Well, well, then you get into the whole philosophy of
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: like do you pay running backs or do you draft them?
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: It hasn't been totally paying running backs and.
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: Free comes back around the other way. It's coming back
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: a little bit because it's funny you look at it,
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: and there was that I think it was two.
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: Years ago where a bunch of running backs changed teams
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: and they kind of did like a musical chairs at
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: running back. I think that was the twenty four off season,
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: not this last one, but the two off seasons ago
- 1:41:12Speaker 2: and like all of them hit and their new teams,
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: like Derrick Henry going from Tennessee to Baltimore. Tony Pollard's
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: been decent for the Titans. And to make it a
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: little bit Titans, you know, Aaron Jones going to Minnesota,
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: Josh Jacobs going to Green Bay. Like it kind of worked,
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: so I DeAndre Swift is Chicago.
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: The thing about it to me, like that Saquon Barkley contractor,
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: was like, you're gonna pay a running back that much?
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: And like he's the Then I left out, of course,
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: because I think he was the year after that, right,
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: think it might have been in the same year. Yi,
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: that's a bad miss then, But did like he's getting
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: If you actually look at what Saquon Barkley's contract is,
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: it's like wide receiver three money I think he got
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: with Steve Slayton got from the Giants, right, So, oh
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: my god, he's a top five paid running back. It's
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: like remember when people freaked out that the Patriots made
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: Joe Cardona the he's paid long separate NFL. It's like
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: it's half a percent of the gap. Yeah, like at
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: a certain point with some positions. Yeah, he's getting paid
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: a lot relative for his position. But if he's good,
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: it's not. Is Saquon Barkley's contract a backbreaking contract? No, right,
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: it's so.
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: It's a little bit in vogue right now. It's it's
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: coming back slightly, just because I don't I don't hate
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: that the market correction has led to it being almost
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: like a devalued position because of the contract. To your
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: point about Saquon, like, it's not like these running backs
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: are making twenty five million dollars a year, so now
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: there's almost like value in it, right, it's kind of
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: a zig zag thing. All right, let's get to these calls.
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: Let's go rapid fire through these calls, and maybe we
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: can talk thirty seconds about the Titans, which, frankly is you.
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: Want me to give my tit take real quick before
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: we do the falls.
- 1:42:44Speaker 2: It's over, good idea.
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: Jeffrey Simmons rules. Yeah, great player. I saw you know,
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: somebody get out of there given a chance to win.
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: Underrated player, tremendous player, game change around, all three downs.
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: Love watching him, looking forward to watching him this week
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: after him, some young guys. I don't hate cam Ward,
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: but like not a ton of talent.
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: Yeah, so my biggest things about this game, like trying
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: to find ways where this is a upset for the Titans.
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: The interim coach bump like does kind of exist. I
- 1:43:16Speaker 2: did some digging on this yesterday. It's not as it
- 1:43:19Speaker 2: hasn't happened as recently, you know, as much recently. They're
- 1:43:22Speaker 2: three and six and since twenty twenty two. But Jeff
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: Saturday in Indy, Darren Rizzy in New Orleans, Antonio Pears
- 1:43:30Speaker 2: in Vegas. All three of those guys recently won their
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: first games as interim head coaches. Mike McCoy has coaching experience.
- 1:43:38Speaker 2: He was four years with the Chargers in the middle
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: of the twenty tens, So like, it's not like somebody
- 1:43:43Speaker 2: that's getting the job for the very first time and
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: doesn't know what he's doing. That whole thing kind of
- 1:43:49Speaker 2: exists now to me, that gets washed out by Rabel
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: coming back to Tennessee because I think the Patriots players
- 1:43:55Speaker 2: are gonna want to win this game for Rabel. So
- 1:43:57Speaker 2: like as much as the interim coach bump helped the
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: Titans and kind of light a fire under the Titans,
- 1:44:03Speaker 2: I think this game has a lot of juice internally.
- 1:44:06Speaker 2: Rable Stretch Harold Landry, Jack Gibbons, Robert splain, even to
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: an extent, like a lot of guys going back to
- 1:44:16Speaker 2: a place that kind of fired them from their jobs.
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: Do you think there's a little more it's a you
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: could look at it either way. I guess I don't
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: know I ver abel well enough on a personal level
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: to say this, is it a little more of a
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: twisting the knife that the guy they replaced you with
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: didn't even make it to your return on him. I'm
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: like that might be the other way. That might be
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: some of it might be like ha ha, like I'm
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: not even facing my replacement, like it's not. But part
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: of it, I don't know, if you're that level of
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: a competitor, would there be an element of you're not
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: even gonna let me beat the guy that you replaced
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: me with. Now I gotta beat this next guy twice?
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: Is bad kind of thing.
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: So I think that the interim head coach bump is
- 1:44:56Speaker 2: one thing. The other thing is three straight row games.
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: It's really hard to win on the road in the
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: same never done Patriot's never done it.
- 1:45:03Speaker 2: It's really hard to win three in a row in
- 1:45:04Speaker 2: this league on the road. That is that is something
- 1:45:09Speaker 2: that is a little bit tricky. But we're taught when
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: we talk about the interim coach bump in the road thing,
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: like we're not talking about tangible things that have anything
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: to do with this game. We're talking about like historical anomalies.
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: Well, football, it's a game played by humans and there's
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: a human element to it.
- 1:45:26Speaker 2: Can't totally sund like it's not about what's like actually
- 1:45:30Speaker 2: on paper.
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: You know the meme online about like the power friendship
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: thing with teams with the power friend it's the Titans
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: got to get up for it, basically, is your point exactly.
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: I think this game is going to go one of
- 1:45:40Speaker 2: two ways. They're going to be an extremely excruciating competitive
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: game where the Titans are going to get up for
- 1:45:47Speaker 2: the game and they're going to really go toe to
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: toe with the Patriots on Sunday, or the Patriots are
- 1:45:51Speaker 2: going to blow doors. And I don't think there's much
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: in between.
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: All right, let's do these calls. All right, four minutes,
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: you gotta go, all right, you gotta go.
- 1:45:58Speaker 2: Brandon is in New Jersey's Brendan.
- 1:46:02Speaker 10: Hey, you got me, Yes, So I have a question
- 1:46:06Speaker 10: about what you guys think about how McDaniels has been
- 1:46:09Speaker 10: using the running backs in the passing game. I mean
- 1:46:11Speaker 10: what it kind of has been is may using the
- 1:46:13Speaker 10: running back as a last resort. I'd kind of like
- 1:46:17Speaker 10: to see like the old McDaniel style, like quick hitters
- 1:46:19Speaker 10: like they use James White, you know, like one one
- 1:46:22Speaker 10: step drop to the you know, to the flat or
- 1:46:24Speaker 10: even the check release. I mean the caveat is that
- 1:46:27Speaker 10: maybe they don't do this because they don't have the
- 1:46:29Speaker 10: luxury to do it, because the running back has to
- 1:46:32Speaker 10: help out to chip or just stay in to block.
- 1:46:34Speaker 10: Just one of your guys thoughts here, I'll take it off.
- 1:46:36Speaker 2: Air, thanks Brendan. So you know the James White option
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: routes and things like that. You know that that takes
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: some advanced nuance to understand leverage and read it out.
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: And I think Remandre can do those types of things,
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: but he is not. Isn't the more dynamic mover out
- 1:46:51Speaker 2: of the two backs, the rookie Henderson. My guess is
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: that there's some mental things going on there about doing
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: those different things. The one thing I would say with
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: the running backs in the passing game, and they hit
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: the wheel to Remondre in Week two in Miami. I
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: would like to see them get vertical a little bit
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: more with the running backs, like especially Henderson, Like can
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: we just see Henderson trying to run a wheel route
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: down the sideline and maybe he gets matched up on
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: a linebacker that's out leverage and actually just wins the
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: foot race, And that might be a way to get
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: him loose and get him the football, is just to
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: get him vertical out of the backfield and just let
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: him run a straight line, Like see if he can
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: outrun a guy, like he's probably gonna be pretty good
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: at that. So that would be my nitpick of the
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: James White like Tom Brady dump offs and things like that,
- 1:47:35Speaker 2: Like those two guys are just really special at that.
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: Like I don't know if that's necessarily something everybody can replicate. Eldredd, Eldred, what's.
- 1:47:45Speaker 8: Up a they outed email? I don't care. I'm taking
- 1:47:53Speaker 8: DK over everybody.
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: Hell yeah.
- 1:47:56Speaker 8: But I still say it's the line to back both
- 1:48:02Speaker 8: games out, especially the last game. And like I said before,
- 1:48:05Speaker 8: but when you got his butt feat full way to one.
- 1:48:08Speaker 10: But other than that, that's it.
- 1:48:10Speaker 8: But AJ Brown would be a Patriot. He's not this year,
- 1:48:14Speaker 8: next year, guarantee, Thank you. I have a good one.
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: Thanks, Eldred. Is there what is the over under on
- 1:48:19Speaker 2: either AJ Brown or Derrick Henry eventually being a Patriot,
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: because I think the percentage is probably pretty hard.
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: I think it's higher for Henry than Brown.
- 1:48:27Speaker 2: I think one of those guys is gonna say, you
- 1:48:29Speaker 2: know what Vrabel's doing exactly what he did in Tennessee.
- 1:48:32Speaker 2: They're building a program in New England. I'm going back
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: with you.
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: So I'll say, I think like there's a good maybe
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: not this year, and maybe it's at the end when
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: he's like kind of done. But like I think a
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: j I think Derk Henry's gonna end up here.
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: I just have a gut feeling at some point, not
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: necessarily this year, at some point I think he ends
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: up here. AJ Brown and we'll see.
- 1:48:50Speaker 2: Francisco is in North Carolina. What's up Francisco? Francisco going once?
- 1:49:00Speaker 3: Go on?
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: Wait, guys, Hello, thank you, Yeah, we got you.
- 1:49:07Speaker 2: What's up? Go ahead, you're on the air. All right,
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: I'm dropping. All right, So that's gonna do it for
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: the show today. That was a quick trigger. I'm sorry,
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: but I had to. We have Patriots Unfiltered coming up here.
