- 0:47This is Gracelyn Keller with the Buckers Healthcare
- 0:49Podcast, and we are live with the 2024
- 0:52payer issues roundtable.
- 0:54I am joined right now by Scott Schweiger,
- 0:56who is the vice president at the clinic
- 0:58by Cleveland Clinic. Scott, thank you for being
- 1:00here, and let's start off by having you
- 1:02introduce yourself and telling us a little bit
- 1:03more about your current role. Sure. Thank you
- 1:05for the opportunity to, chat with Becker's.
- 1:09Scott Schweiger vice president
- 1:10at the Clinic by Cleveland Clinic. We provide
- 1:13virtual second opinions
- 1:14across accessing our 35 100 specialists and 550
- 1:19subspecialists at the Cleveland Clinic.
- 1:21Wonderful. Well, thank you for being here. And
- 1:23let's talk about
- 1:25member engagement to start our conversation here. So
- 1:28at an industry level, how would you describe
- 1:30the biggest barriers to effectively serving and engaging
- 1:32members? And what opportunities do you see for
- 1:35large scale improvements, and how are you applying
- 1:37this your current strategy? Sure. Thank you. So
- 1:40there's a couple of a couple of viewpoints
- 1:42here. So in terms of barriers, if you
- 1:45look at the payers,
- 1:46there are thousands of digital health solutions to
- 1:49navigate from, from
- 1:51telehealth platforms
- 1:52to advocacy and navigation solutions, which would include
- 1:56everything from diabetes, cardiometabolic,
- 1:59oncology,
- 2:01neuro, GI, etcetera.
- 2:04And payers face a patchwork of all these
- 2:07disparate tools,
- 2:08right? One report identified over 1400
- 2:11digital health ventures worldwide.
- 2:14Another reported more than
- 2:16350,000
- 2:17mobile health apps and there are 11,000
- 2:20point solutions in the market which payers have
- 2:22access to.
- 2:24From a member perspective, they're equally frustrated, feeling
- 2:27confused about their plans' offerings, and even facing
- 2:30delays in care as a result.
- 2:32So this, you know, we kind of call
- 2:34that member abrasion. From a payer perspective, it
- 2:37could be argued there's point solution fatigue in
- 2:39the market and how do you bring all
- 2:41these things together. The fatigue can leave patients
- 2:43struggling to navigate the healthcare maze while leaving
- 2:45payers with underutilized solutions
- 2:48that failed to deliver the intended value.
- 2:51On a personal
- 2:52level, I often ask people, who are you
- 2:54insured with? And they'll give me their insurer
- 2:56and I'm like, are you aware of all
- 2:57of your benefits available?
- 3:00And I encourage them to go look in
- 3:01the little magnifier
- 3:03of their app and go plug in whatever
- 3:05you want to do, diabetes control, weight loss,
- 3:08whatever. And most of them have no idea
- 3:10that even these payers offer premium discounts
- 3:13to go after
- 3:15the certain conditions that they want to get
- 3:17in control.
- 3:18So, opportunities for improvements, where do they lie?
- 3:21You know, omnichannel strategy in the payer world
- 3:24with the member is all about
- 3:27being there for the member and their channel
- 3:29of choice
- 3:30at their time of need. So, how do
- 3:32you do that? You know, for the payer,
- 3:34as an example, this could mean enabling partners
- 3:37and investments
- 3:38together to collaborate on their solutions for integration
- 3:41support
- 3:42across the population,
- 3:44across certain chronic conditions.
- 3:46So, I would always encourage payers to say,
- 3:48If you're being approached with
- 3:50the broad areas of oncology, don't be afraid
- 3:53to bring your partners together
- 3:55because it could be single sign ons underneath
- 3:58them.
- 3:59For the members, they will see the result
- 4:01of a platform integration,
- 4:03more personalized support and allowing them to understand,
- 4:06get the outreach they need. And oftentimes,
- 4:09payers don't have the resources to outreach those
- 4:13members.
- 4:14So another piece that we look at is
- 4:16you hear a lot about member engagement,
- 4:19but it needs to go one step further.
- 4:21I can reach out to you and tell
- 4:23you there is a diabetes program for you.
- 4:26I am engaging you, but how am I
- 4:28enabling you to do that? How are you
- 4:30going to reciprocate
- 4:31by taking action? And so those are some
- 4:34of the things that are ongoing
- 4:36in the market. And as for the clinic,
- 4:38when we talk chronic conditions,
- 4:41high cost, complex, rare conditions that we can
- 4:44help members
- 4:45become aware of or control their journey, we
- 4:48actually use nurse care navigators to reach out
- 4:51to them
- 4:53and help them in their journey.
- 4:55Wonderful. And switching gears a little bit to
- 4:58leadership growth, keeping pace in today's dynamic health
- 5:01care landscape is challenging. So what is a
- 5:03piece of advice you'd share with peer leaders
- 5:05to grow their business while keeping members top
- 5:07of mind? Yeah. Health care is a noble
- 5:09business, but a business nonetheless. And to kind
- 5:12of pivot off
- 5:13of the recent world series in baseball, you
- 5:16know, games are won on singles and doubles.
- 5:18Rarely are you gonna win on a home
- 5:20run. And similar in health care, if you
- 5:22listen to what's going on at the Becker's
- 5:24conference today, there's very few payers who are
- 5:26getting up and saying, We solved this problem
- 5:29and figured something out and it saved us
- 5:31$81,000,000,000
- 5:32right? It's, We found a solution aimed at
- 5:35members and we're saving 1,000,000 here or millions
- 5:38there or we're helping
- 5:40thousands of patients and members here and there.
- 5:42So, it's really breaking it down. So, the
- 5:45theme there is
- 5:47prioritize adaptability by investing in scalable,
- 5:50member centered solutions, and look at your partner
- 5:53base and bring them together.
- 5:57And switching gears toward health equity, as this
- 6:00becomes increasingly centered in payer strategies, how is
- 6:03your organization addressing health disparities? And can you
- 6:06share examples of measurable successes to date?
- 6:09Sure. Two parts to that. The clinic by
- 6:11Cleveland Clinic gives access to specialty care,
- 6:14including
- 6:15for people in rural or underserved areas.
- 6:18Patients don't experience barriers like travel costs, limited
- 6:22specialist availability,
- 6:24or administrative red tape. The solution provides misdiagnosis
- 6:27and unnecessary
- 6:29treatments. The clinic offers member cost savings and
- 6:32reduced out of pocket expenses.
- 6:34So some of the statistics there are 60%
- 6:37of Americans
- 6:38have a chronic disease.
- 6:4050% of that population has a subchronic
- 6:43condition going on.
- 6:44Misdiagnosises
- 6:46lead to 750,000
- 6:48deaths or disability each
- 6:50year, and 51,000,000
- 6:52inpatient surgeries
- 6:53could have had an alternative
- 6:55treatment plan. And that's really what we're doing.
- 6:58And the last piece is everybody is aware
- 7:00of the importance of care deserts in the
- 7:02rural or underserved areas.
- 7:04So virtual health in a number of areas,
- 7:07reaching out to them can help that.
- 7:10And as we think about quality,
- 7:12in an ever changing
- 7:14regulatory
- 7:15environment,
- 7:17what tools or key strategies have helped your
- 7:19organization improve quality and clinical outcomes for members
- 7:22while staying compliant?
- 7:23Sure. The clinic's value is to unlock access
- 7:27for the member and give them the ability
- 7:29to have an informed
- 7:31decision on their healthcare journey.
- 7:34And as you look forward to
- 7:37value based care and where that's going, you
- 7:39know, it's the 3 legged stool. Can we
- 7:41get the member? Can we get the provider?
- 7:43And can we get the payer
- 7:45all sitting on that same stool and being
- 7:47aware of what's going on in their own
- 7:49journeys? From secure telehealth platform members,
- 7:52that powers the member experience,
- 7:55to our approach ensuring physicians have a broad
- 7:57licensing perspective and are able to meet that
- 7:59need for the majority of people who come
- 8:01through the program.
- 8:02And we're fortunate enough to have
- 8:04the 35100
- 8:05plus physicians of the Cleveland Clinic to help
- 8:08with that approach.
- 8:10Wonderful. Well, Scott, thank you for joining me
- 8:12today on the Becker's healthcare podcast. Again, we
- 8:14are live at the 2024 payer issues roundtable.
- 8:17Thank you.
