- 0:00Speaker 1: We've got some rivalry matches coming up this Friday for
- 0:02Speaker 1: volleyball and soccer, both down at BYU Friday night.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Good luck to those teams.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Saturday morning, cross-country, Coach Kepler and crew are going to
- 0:12Speaker 1: be in Oklahoma to run at the Big 12 Championships.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Wish them, obviously, the best there. And it's hard to
- 0:18Speaker 1: believe the basketball season's a week away.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Crazy, right? Men's basketball's already started. They kick off, I think...
- 0:26Speaker 2: It all starts counting Monday against Long Beach State. They
- 0:28Speaker 2: had a great win over Oregon.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Coach Peterson and the women have Eastern Washington next Tuesday.
- 0:33Speaker 1: So it's almost here. Our recap of the Saturday night game.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Fans were awesome.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Atmosphere is one of the best they've been a part of.
- 0:43Speaker 1: So I can't thank our fans enough for showing up
- 0:47Speaker 1: in a big way. The game in and of itself, obviously,
- 0:53Speaker 1: slow start. Something that we haven't had. I thought we
- 0:57Speaker 1: drove the ball well at times, but definitely things needed
- 1:03Speaker 1: to be corrected at halftime and were. Credit to our
- 1:06Speaker 1: offensive staff for not panicking and working through some stuff.
- 1:11Speaker 2: 226 yards rushing was huge.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Devin with 150, and like I said, I was asked
- 1:17Speaker 1: after the first quarter by Quint Kestnich, you know, is
- 1:21Speaker 1: this sustainable?
- 1:23Speaker 2: I said no, and it was. He kept running.
- 1:27Speaker 1: But that's not obviously what we want. But, you know,
- 1:32Speaker 1: Dev's that competitor. I thought Daniel Bray had a, you know,
- 1:35Speaker 1: for his three carries, averaged 11 yards, really proud of
- 1:38Speaker 1: Daniel running through the tackles, playing physical. And he got
- 1:44Speaker 1: every bit out of his three reps. Uh, rush defense
- 1:50Speaker 1: showed up in a big way, 86 yards rushing to
- 1:52Speaker 1: a team that had been rushing the ball fairly well. Obviously, uh,
- 1:55Speaker 1: those wide receivers are dynamic and I thought we, uh,
- 1:59Speaker 1: did a nice job against them. Uh, the red zone
- 2:02Speaker 1: defense was again, showed up in a, in a huge way.
- 2:05Speaker 1: They were one of three in terms of touchdowns, uh,
- 2:08Speaker 1: tackling overall.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I mean, it was just awesome.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Open field tackling, uh, linebackers, uh, safeties that all did
- 2:15Speaker 1: a really nice job.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Um, Noah Benny, five catches.
- 2:19Speaker 1: For 52 yards and made some guys miss, which is
- 2:22Speaker 1: a nice thing. His penalty in the end zone is
- 2:26Speaker 1: the craziest thing I've ever seen. I think he didn't
- 2:28Speaker 1: know that wasn't his teammate.
- 2:31Speaker 2: I think he was trying to celebrate. But anyway, we
- 2:34Speaker 2: love Noah, but we can't have penalties like that. Credit
- 2:38Speaker 2: to our D-line.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I thought we did a really nice job of getting
- 2:41Speaker 1: pressure on the quarterback, forcing him to throw the ball
- 2:43Speaker 1: when he didn't want to throw the ball, getting tips,
- 2:46Speaker 1: getting deflections.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Where we needed him. Lance Holtzclaw was all over the field,
- 2:50Speaker 2: very active.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Jai showed up again in a big way. And obviously
- 2:54Speaker 1: the sack force from Jackson Benny was the big play
- 2:58Speaker 1: in the game that kind of put us in position
- 3:01Speaker 1: to end it.
- 3:04Speaker 2: So really just proud of the guys for their fight.
- 3:07Speaker 2: This is one that.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Really good job in preparation. Colton Swan and McGinn, really
- 3:15Speaker 1: good game plans. Obviously, defense showed up all night long
- 3:19Speaker 1: and offense got going.
- 3:20Speaker 2: In the second half. We've got a great team in
- 3:23Speaker 2: Cincinnati that we're facing.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Obviously, they just beat a top 10 program in the country,
- 3:29Speaker 1: Texas Tech, and they're hosting another one. So it's going
- 3:32Speaker 1: to be a great environment on Halloween and we're excited
- 3:37Speaker 1: that we're going to have to be road warriors for
- 3:39Speaker 1: the next three out of the four weeks that we play,
- 3:42Speaker 1: and that's something that we're excited about. Their offense is
- 3:48Speaker 1: humming right now, statistically 20th in the country in total offense,
- 3:52Speaker 1: 8th in the country, 2nd to West Virginia in the
- 3:54Speaker 1: Big 12 in terms of rushing offense, so another game
- 3:57Speaker 1: where we're going to have to be really stout up front.
- 4:00Speaker 1: They're 22nd in the country in pass efficiency offense with
- 4:03Speaker 1: a quarterback that's playing really well, confidence. Obviously, Coach Satterfield's
- 4:09Speaker 1: done a great job bringing in a new quarterback and
- 4:13Speaker 1: getting him going. He's 15th in the country in completion percentage.
- 4:16Speaker 2: He's efficient.
- 4:16Speaker 1: They don't turn the ball over. They're doing some really
- 4:19Speaker 1: good things, and they're playing with confidence. They're going to
- 4:20Speaker 1: be playing at their.
- 4:21Speaker 2: House, in a packed house. This is a great challenge
- 4:24Speaker 2: for us. Questions? Who's got it? First off, great win
- 4:30Speaker 2: on Saturday.
- 4:31Speaker 3: With your last four games being the toughest part of
- 4:33Speaker 3: your schedule, how.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Do you keep the team focused? And then one of
- 4:36Speaker 2: my concerns is I noticed I was in the, in
- 4:38Speaker 2: the fourth quarter, we lost our composure. So my question is,
- 4:41Speaker 2: what is the plan moving forward to address the issue?
- 4:43Speaker 1: Well, um, yeah, guys that, um, start to lose their
- 4:47Speaker 1: composure that, that don't prove, uh, mature enough to be
- 4:52Speaker 1: able to handle it. We, we bring out of the
- 4:54Speaker 1: game and that's what you saw with, uh, you know,
- 4:57Speaker 1: what was going on there. Ultimately, we got to be
- 4:59Speaker 1: more mature in that situation, understand the frustrations, but, uh,
- 5:03Speaker 1: I think our guys do a pretty good job of
- 5:05Speaker 1: policing themselves. Obviously, the one penalty there in the end
- 5:09Speaker 1: zone was not malicious. It was really a mix-up, confusing
- 5:15Speaker 1: thing there. But I thought our guys did a pretty
- 5:18Speaker 1: good job. And in terms of playing on the road,
- 5:24Speaker 1: that's adversity that you've got to be able to handle.
- 5:28Speaker 1: We do everything we can to simulate crowd noise.
- 5:33Speaker 2: And so I think we prepare our guys.
- 5:36Speaker 1: We do a pretty good job of preparing our guys,
- 5:38Speaker 1: but ultimately they've got to show up on game day
- 5:40Speaker 1: and perform. So I know this is going to be
- 5:42Speaker 1: an electric atmosphere in Cincinnati, and I know our guys
- 5:46Speaker 1: are going to be ready for it. We've got sole
- 5:49Speaker 1: ownership of first place in the Big 12, and you
- 5:52Speaker 1: have to have a championship mentality of what you have.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Don't let anyone take away. you know, and our guys
- 5:58Speaker 1: will be prepared and ready to go. So thanks for
- 6:01Speaker 1: that question, brother.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Morgan, in the fourth quarter, you had kind of that
- 6:08Speaker 3: firefighter type drill where you were looking to punt and
- 6:10Speaker 3: then you decided to bring on your offense.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Was there ever a chance that you were going to
- 6:14Speaker 2: go for that?
- 6:14Speaker 3: Because kind of what led into that moment where just
- 6:17Speaker 3: kind of trying to bring chaos into their side?
- 6:20Speaker 1: Well, we didn't really get to see the whole thing
- 6:23Speaker 1: play out because they blew the whistle.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Uh unfortunately the.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Clock operator had the clock going and so uh i
- 6:33Speaker 1: mean let's just say maybe we run a play maybe
- 6:37Speaker 1: we don't yeah no it's the bottom line is you're
- 6:42Speaker 1: you know you're trying to make sure that you catch
- 6:47Speaker 1: people off guard you know if they're not ready you
- 6:50Speaker 1: have an opportunity um but yeah we just that's something
- 6:54Speaker 1: that we decided we wanted to to try out and
- 6:58Speaker 1: we didn't unfortunately get to see the end of it.
- 7:01Speaker 4: You talked a little bit about just Devin running and
- 7:04Speaker 4: that's something that you kind of want to balance.
- 7:07Speaker 3: It seems like it unlocked a little bit obviously with
- 7:09Speaker 3: non-designed runs on.
- 7:10Speaker 4: The scramble drill but is there a way that you
- 7:13Speaker 4: guys want to implement more designed quarterback runs or maybe
- 7:17Speaker 4: even stuff with Bird just seeing how successful.
- 7:20Speaker 2: It was on Saturday?
- 7:21Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, designed QB runs we've got a bunch
- 7:26Speaker 1: of them And we have some for Bird.
- 7:30Speaker 2: We also have a very good running back that we
- 7:34Speaker 2: like to get the ball to.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Devin's going to end up running just simply because if
- 7:42Speaker 1: teams are going to crash on the dive.
- 7:44Speaker 2: In option, he's pulling it. He's taught to pull it.
- 7:47Speaker 1: And he's smart enough to know, okay, they're going to have.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Different ways of handling the your read option plays.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Sometimes you're going to crash with your end and you're
- 8:02Speaker 1: going to bring that back around on a gap exchange.
- 8:06Speaker 1: He did a really nice job, as well as our
- 8:08Speaker 1: offensive line, of seeing that, handling that, and creasing. A
- 8:14Speaker 1: lot of his yards weren't necessarily Devin saying, I'm going
- 8:16Speaker 1: to put the team on my back. It's just him
- 8:20Speaker 1: taking care of his responsibility. But there are those times
- 8:25Speaker 1: where he does say, I'm I feel I'm the best
- 8:29Speaker 1: player on the field and I'm going to make this happen.
- 8:32Speaker 1: And we've got to, you know, when you're playing with
- 8:34Speaker 1: a guy like that that's so competitive and, you know,
- 8:36Speaker 1: 90% of the time he's going to be right, it's
- 8:40Speaker 1: hard to, you know, there's two kinds of players that
- 8:43Speaker 1: you struggle with. The first is those that never do
- 8:47Speaker 1: anything that you tell them to do. And then the
- 8:50Speaker 1: second type are the ones that only can do what
- 8:53Speaker 1: you tell them to do, meaning they can't ad lib.
- 8:56Speaker 1: They don't know, okay, I can take a chance here
- 8:59Speaker 1: based on what I see, based on film study. He's really,
- 9:03Speaker 1: really smart and we don't want to put the handcuffs
- 9:08Speaker 1: on if he's going to continue to make plays for us.
- 9:13Speaker 1: The offense does a really good job of balancing that out.
- 9:16Speaker 4: On Saturday, you talked about beware of the soothing sounds
- 9:19Speaker 4: of praise. As a program, how do you make sure
- 9:22Speaker 4: your players aren't buying into.
- 9:24Speaker 2: The hype and How do you do that as a program?
- 9:29Speaker 1: Make sure that they understand what wins and loses football
- 9:32Speaker 1: games and what's on film, that nothing people say.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Determines football games.
- 9:42Speaker 1: You get teams that have unbelievable big wins, emotional wins,
- 9:47Speaker 1: and then the next week you have the letdown effect. Again,
- 9:52Speaker 1: we're just going to continue to preach that every game
- 9:57Speaker 1: is a championship game.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Because....
- 10:00Speaker 1: It's hard to win. There's parity. You don't know what
- 10:04Speaker 1: other teams' motivations are. And when teams are playing ranked teams,
- 10:09Speaker 1: they're going to bring it. They're going to be more excited,
- 10:12Speaker 1: whatever that is. So we just have to be us,
- 10:16Speaker 1: and we've got to do it week after week after week,
- 10:18Speaker 1: day after day after day.
- 10:20Speaker 2: This is the only game that matters. Coach, I'm curious.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Devin scores the touchdown to go up seven with just
- 10:27Speaker 3: over two minutes left. Was it ever a consideration to
- 10:30Speaker 3: go for two and make it a two-possession game there?
- 10:34Speaker 2: No.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Defense was playing really well. That's not, in my opinion,
- 10:42Speaker 1: a time to go for two. Others will disagree, but
- 10:50Speaker 1: with our defense, go ahead, drive the length of the
- 10:52Speaker 1: field and then have to, if you score, have to,
- 10:54Speaker 1: you have to get a two point.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Conversion and then we go into overtime. And it's like, I, I,
- 10:59Speaker 2: I believe that our guys at that point, obviously.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Where do you feel your team can improve the most
- 11:05Speaker 3: between now and the rest of the season?
- 11:08Speaker 1: Um, there were some things on the offensive line in
- 11:10Speaker 1: terms of, uh, IDing stunts and some things up front
- 11:14Speaker 1: that I thought we did a better job of in, uh,
- 11:16Speaker 1: in the second half.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Um, We can't turn the ball over. You know, there's
- 11:22Speaker 2: them taking the ball away, and then.
- 11:23Speaker 1: There's us turning it over just with bad decision-making, and
- 11:26Speaker 1: we've had a couple of those. So those are two
- 11:30Speaker 1: off the top of my head. You know, defensively, communication
- 11:36Speaker 1: in combo coverages, stuff like that, maybe a little bit
- 11:39Speaker 1: more disguising what we're doing.
- 11:43Speaker 2: But, yeah, I mean, it's... Our coach is doing a
- 11:47Speaker 2: really good job game by game.
- 11:50Speaker 1: It's just something different that shows up and you just
- 11:52Speaker 1: try and correct it as you go.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Morgan, I'm curious your thoughts on Lucas Damsula. He played
- 11:57Speaker 5: his most snaps of the season versus Houston and he
- 12:01Speaker 5: had that big stuff on one of their run plays.
- 12:03Speaker 5: How have you seen him maybe get more comfortable since
- 12:06Speaker 5: when he stepped on campus to now that it's allowing
- 12:08Speaker 5: him to have added reps?
- 12:10Speaker 1: Well, I think he's done a great job of, first
- 12:14Speaker 1: of all, learning our scheme. Coach Ellis is fantastic with technique.
- 12:22Speaker 1: He was continually playing with inside hands and vertical leverage.
- 12:26Speaker 2: The guy's strong as an ox. It just so.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Happened that we faced a lot of goal line, short
- 12:32Speaker 1: yardage situations where we needed that strength.
- 12:36Speaker 2: He showed up in a big way. Really proud of Lucas.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Morgan, what do you like best about the way your
- 12:41Speaker 3: front seven is playing right now, best rush defense in
- 12:43Speaker 3: the Big 12, and what type of challenges does the
- 12:44Speaker 3: Cincinnati offensive line.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Present this week?
- 12:48Speaker 1: I would say that I'm most proud of us playing
- 12:50Speaker 1: with really good technique. Technique is what allows you to win.
- 12:55Speaker 1: You can just be physically superior to an opponent, but
- 12:59Speaker 1: really when you're playing good on good, you better have
- 13:02Speaker 1: fantastic technique. You watch Lance Holtzclaw and how disruptive he
- 13:05Speaker 1: was it's him taking on tight ends correctly with inside hands,
- 13:12Speaker 1: getting knocked.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Back, knocking off pullers.
- 13:15Speaker 1: So the technique that our guys, our coaches, are holding
- 13:19Speaker 1: our guys accountable to, that's what's allowing them to play
- 13:22Speaker 1: so well.
- 13:23Speaker 2: The effort is there. They're relentless to the football. You
- 13:27Speaker 2: look at.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Let's see. There was a deep pass to zero.
- 13:36Speaker 4: And.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Rabbit Evans runs it down.
- 13:39Speaker 1: If Rabbit Evans doesn't take off once he sees that,
- 13:43Speaker 1: the guy scores a touchdown. He takes off, tackles him,
- 13:47Speaker 1: and then I believe, I don't know if it was
- 13:49Speaker 1: three plays later, they're forced to kick a field goal.
- 13:51Speaker 1: I mean, that's huge. And you've got to go back
- 13:55Speaker 1: to that. You've got to promote it. And your guys
- 13:57Speaker 1: have to see how valuable that is. Okay, that wasn't
- 14:02Speaker 1: my mistake. That wasn't my guy. But I'm going to
- 14:04Speaker 1: take off and I'm going to go. And he makes
- 14:06Speaker 1: that tackle, and, you know, they don't get seven. So
- 14:10Speaker 1: I think that happened somewhere else in the game, maybe
- 14:13Speaker 1: with the quarterback. But that's just so important, and it's
- 14:16Speaker 1: a huge part of the game that if you don't
- 14:19Speaker 1: focus on, that is a touchdown. So really proud of
- 14:23Speaker 1: those guys. What was the background to your question?
- 14:27Speaker 2: Very athletic. Very sound, well-taught. You know, I.
- 14:35Speaker 2: And they get after it. They're a physical bunch.
- 14:37Speaker 1: So, you know, the challenge is no different than any
- 14:41Speaker 1: physical front that you play is can you play with
- 14:44Speaker 1: better technique?
- 14:45Speaker 2: Can you match that intensity? You know, they don't do
- 14:49Speaker 2: it a lot in terms of tails and stuff.
- 14:53Speaker 1: You give stuff away. So you just got to get
- 14:55Speaker 1: on good and here we go. Who's going to play
- 14:57Speaker 1: with better technique?
- 15:00Speaker 2: How did.
- 15:01Speaker 3: How did Houston limit Weishan in the run game and
- 15:05Speaker 3: what do you have to do figuring you'll see more of.
- 15:07Speaker 1: That down the road? A lot of it was they
- 15:11Speaker 1: wanted to crash down. They were like, okay, Weishan's not
- 15:14Speaker 1: going to beat.
- 15:17Speaker 4: Us.
- 15:18Speaker 2: What you have to do.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Is maybe some different things in terms of disguising how
- 15:24Speaker 1: you're going to run the ball, some more gap scheme
- 15:28Speaker 1: stuff that's not necessarily a QB pull or an option read,
- 15:33Speaker 1: but they were basically saying, we want him to pull it,
- 15:37Speaker 1: we want him to pitch it, and Devin was doing
- 15:40Speaker 1: a really good job of making that work.
- 15:43Speaker 3: Morgan, on that Houston touchdown drive, it took Houston, they
- 15:46Speaker 3: got to the 14-yard line, and then it took them
- 15:49Speaker 3: nine plays to actually get it into the end zone.
- 15:52Speaker 3: As a coach who talks about your culture all the time,
- 15:55Speaker 3: being relentless, Was that a moment where they're coming off
- 15:57Speaker 3: the field that you're proud of the fight that they
- 15:59Speaker 3: put up?
- 16:00Speaker 2: Oh, no question.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Yeah, but again, look at the film. It's guys playing
- 16:05Speaker 1: with great technique, coming off the ball. You get in
- 16:08Speaker 1: the red zone, and you have to play on their
- 16:10Speaker 1: side of scrimmage. And at times, you're going to have
- 16:16Speaker 1: to take chances. That's why you see so often in football, in.
- 16:22Speaker 2: The red zone.
- 16:23Speaker 1: you know tight ends wide open because you took a
- 16:26Speaker 1: chance there's a pop pass or you know stuff like
- 16:28Speaker 1: that but you know uh really proud of our guys
- 16:31Speaker 1: they they knew that this was going to be a
- 16:34Speaker 1: battle this was a complete team that we were playing
- 16:37Speaker 1: and and and.
- 16:38Speaker 2: They brought it so great job by those guys we're
- 16:41Speaker 2: gonna in that.
- 16:42Speaker 3: First half the right side of your offensive line was
- 16:44Speaker 3: kind of not handling the pressure as well what changed
- 16:47Speaker 3: in the second half that allowed you to kind of
- 16:49Speaker 3: stabilize that and allow the offense to function a little
- 16:51Speaker 3: bit better?
- 16:52Speaker 2: Just better communication.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Better communication from the offensive line, the tight ends. There
- 16:58Speaker 1: were a couple times in the first half where we
- 17:00Speaker 1: flipped protections where we shouldn't have, and that's going to
- 17:03Speaker 1: cause free hitters to come. Much better communication in the
- 17:08Speaker 1: second half. That's another group, man, right there. Watch that
- 17:12Speaker 1: film and watch them finish. Watch them push our running
- 17:15Speaker 1: backs forward, our wide receivers forward, run down the field.
- 17:19Speaker 2: I love that crew. The old block is doing a
- 17:22Speaker 2: really nice job.
- 17:23Speaker 3: Morgan, Kelvin Obot was listed as out.
- 17:28Speaker 1: I'm just curious, how is he progressing in week two
- 17:31Speaker 1: of the injury, and do you have a timetable on.
- 17:33Speaker 2: When he might return? No timetable.
- 17:35Speaker 1: He's not out for the season. But we're still getting
- 17:38Speaker 1: a second opinion on things. Just to give him options
- 17:45Speaker 1: as to what he.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Wants to do. There is a possibility.
- 17:48Speaker 1: That he could be done for the season, depending on
- 17:50Speaker 1: what that opinion comes back as, but for right now,
- 17:54Speaker 1: there's still a possibility he plays.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Obviously, you guys do so much with film watching and
- 18:00Speaker 4: the eye test, but I'm curious, analytically and statistically, what
- 18:04Speaker 4: are some of the stats that are predictive of success.
- 18:10Speaker 2: That you use a lot in your programs? Okay, so
- 18:16Speaker 2: you want to win? Score points.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Scoring offense is always going to be one of the
- 18:20Speaker 1: top statistics. Scoring defense, conversely, right?
- 18:27Speaker 2: Rush defense.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Rush offense, interestingly enough, doesn't show up as a big
- 18:36Speaker 1: stat for your top teams in the country. Now, yards
- 18:40Speaker 1: per rush, different story. So are you rushing the ball efficiently?
- 18:44Speaker 1: Same thing, passing the ball. Are you passing the ball efficiently? Uh,
- 18:48Speaker 1: passing yards that, that will never, uh, show up. I mean,
- 18:53Speaker 1: it rarely shows up in your top programs, turnover margin.
- 18:57Speaker 1: They're really good at it. I think they're 14th in
- 18:58Speaker 1: the country and they're not turning the ball over and
- 19:01Speaker 1: then conversely taking the ball away. So that shows up, uh,
- 19:05Speaker 1: punt return yards. That's the number one special team statistic
- 19:08Speaker 1: that you look at. Uh, probably because you're forcing teams
- 19:14Speaker 1: to punt the ball, but also you're flipping the field
- 19:16Speaker 1: in terms of the yards that you're gaining. So punt
- 19:18Speaker 1: return yards shows up. A good amount of them, when
- 19:25Speaker 1: you look at it, really are on the defensive side
- 19:27Speaker 1: of the ball. That's why playing great defense is so
- 19:30Speaker 1: huge in protecting the football. Chunk yardage plays shows up
- 19:36Speaker 1: quite a bit. But we'll have to sit down, Joe.
- 19:38Speaker 1: I've got a nice little sheet. that I can show
- 19:41Speaker 1: you from studying the top teams in college football over
- 19:45Speaker 1: the last 20 years.
