- 0:30Adams, London, August nineteenth, seventeen ninety six. Sunday lost brought to
- 0:37hand your invaluable letter of the sixth Shall I confess I was nearly too much
- 0:43elated to know what I read, having vainly flattered myself from the intelligence I
- 0:49previously received of your immediate return. But alas how delusive is hope? How
- 0:57was I disappointed to find you might not return till spring. You ask my
- 1:02permission to come here. Oh, my best friend, you already know too
- 1:06well the anxiety our separation has caused me to doubt my complying with your request.
- 1:12I sincerely wish you happiness, and judging for myself, am vain enough
- 1:18to believe it cannot be complete while separated from me. You say it is
- 1:23possible we may meet in the winter. I cannot on this occasion admit my
- 1:29too futile favorite hope. Remember how long the American government detained you before,
- 1:34and reflect if I have not reason to fear in answer to that part of
- 1:38your letter relative to your voyage, I am above deception and will candidly own
- 1:46there is not anything on earth can afford me equal happiness to accompanying you to
- 1:51whatever part of the globe the fates may destin you. Your friend, mister
- 1:56Hall has just been to inquire when you are expected, and was so polite
- 2:00as to beg my acceptance of a tooth pick case jointly with my sisters.
- 2:06I felt somewhat reluctant at receiving it, but not wishing to appear singular.
- 2:10Have taken it, adieu, and believe me with unceasing affection, Your friend,
