- 0:07The New York Yankees faced the Detroit Tigers for a Thursday afternoon game at Tigers Stadium on April 11th, 1974.
- 0:15The Yankees were coached by Bill Virdon, and Mel Stottlemeyer would make the second start of what would be his final season.
- 0:21The Tigers were coached by Ralph Houk, who was leading an aging team.
- 0:25Both Al Kaline and Norm Cash were in the final year of their career, and Jim Northrup, Bill Frehan, and Mickey Lolich would retire in the next few years.
- 0:33This audio recording is from the New York Radio broadcast featuring announcers Phil Rizzuto and Frank Messer.
- 0:59The Yankees were coached by Coleman, making his second start of the year. He had no decision in the season opener against Baltimore.
- 1:07Big right-hander, basically a breaking ball pitcher. The ball's buttered foul down the third base side, and it snowballs and two strikes on white.
- 1:17A couple years ago, Colman came up with a fork ball, and he gave the Yankees fits with it for a while.
- 1:23Colman has won 8 and lost 13 against the Yankees, and he's won 5 and lost 6 since becoming a Tiger in 1971.
- 1:33And the 0-2 pitch to white hit him, and it'll go to first base. Roy White hit with an old ball, two-strike pitch.
- 1:41I think he tried to brush him back, but he got it in a little too far.
- 1:44He sure did, and that's going to make Ralph Hauk very unhappy, and Colman, too, a head 0-2, and he's kicking the dirt out of that mound now.
- 1:52So white leads it off with the Yankees, starting the ball game off by getting hit on the right hip-flop pitch, and that'll bring in Mike Hegan, the first baseman.
- 2:02Now, the Yankees have tried to run on freehand early. He's throwing them out so far. Let's see.
- 2:06Pitch to Hegan has fouled back. In the past, freehand has had trouble with his right shoulder, but he cuts down two Yankees trying to steal in the opener on Tuesday.
- 2:17Roy White, an excellent baserunner. No ball is going to strike on Mike Hegan.
- 2:24Nobody out white with the lead from first base. It was set by Colman. And the throw there. White back easily.
- 2:33Hegan is 4-12 so far this year. He's batting 3-33. He's picked up a couple of RBIs.
- 2:39Now, the set. And the 0-1 pitch. Breaking ball. On the outside corner, it's no balls and two strikes.
- 2:48So far, Colman's only thrown one ball, and everything else has been a strike, and that one ball hit white. It was no 2-pitch.
- 2:57Trying to move White back off the plate, and he got him on the left hip, and Roy leads from first.
- 3:04The set. Here's the 0-2 pitch to Mike Hegan. Swung on it on the ground to first base. Cash has it. Goes to second for one. Back to first.
- 3:11It's time. Double play by the Tigers. A 3-6-3 double play. Cash to Brinkman. Back to Cash. And they're two down.
- 3:25Here's Thurman Mutsen.
- 3:32Mutsen batting an even 400 on the area. 6-15. Home run, three runs batted in. That double play cleaned the bases.
- 3:40Nobody on now with two outs.
- 3:45On deck for the Yankees, Bobby Mercer. Mutsen taking a lot of time getting ready.
- 3:51Curve ball. Moves him back off the plate. No balls. One ball and no strikes.
- 3:58Tigers have Rodriguez at third. Brinkman's a shortstop. Sutherland at second. And to Cash at first.
- 4:05The 1-0 pitch. The breaking ball. Pulled foul outside of third.
- 4:10Willie Horton's in left. Mickey Stanley in center. Jim Northrop in right.
- 4:17No freehand catching. Joe Coleman pitching.
- 4:20Of all the strike on Mutsen, two out, nobody on. We're just underway. Top of the first, no score yet. From Tiger Stadium.
- 4:281-1 pitch. Swung on. Hit on the ground to first base. One hopper to Cash. He'll take it himself. He has to hurry.
- 4:34And he just beats Mutsen to the bag. No one cares. They get themselves. They're forgetting that Mutsen really huckles down the line.
- 4:41And he just beats Mutsen to the bag by a whisker. Over the Yankees. And the first, no runs, no hits.
- 4:48It was a hit matter, but he was wiped out for the double play. So nobody was left on base.
- 4:52We're going to the bottom half of the first inning. The Yankees nothing and the Tigers coming up.
- 5:00Martin Luther King.
- 5:05William Penn.
- 5:10A. Philip Randolph.
- 5:14Harriet Beecher Stowe.
- 5:17Distinguished names. Names we recognize as belonging to the community of men and women dedicated to peace and nonviolence.
- 5:27And behind each leader there were, and are, anonymous thousands working to bring about a better life.
- 5:36It's something for us to remember when we think about violence in the daily news.
- 5:42We know that violence is in all of us. So is God. And that makes nonviolence a realizable goal.
- 5:51The community of God. Make it your way.
- 5:55This message is brought to you by Religion in American Life in cooperation with this station.
- 6:04Bill Sotomayor just finishes one of our throws into Fairman Mutsen. We're about ready to get underway at the bottom of the first.
- 6:10The Yankees did not score on the top of the first. Then the Tigers will send in Ed Brinkman, Aurelio Rodriguez, and Jim Northrop against Sotomayor.
- 6:19This is Mel's second star of the season. He beat Cleveland in the opener 6-1.
- 6:23And he just missed his 41st career shutout in the ninth inning.
- 6:28So Sotomayor would certainly like to get that here this afternoon as he deals to the right hand of Hiddink Brinkman.
- 6:34A breaking ball that's inside.
- 6:37I think we said then that Sotomayor's 40 shutouts were the most by an active American League pitcher.
- 6:43And we forgot, of course, about Juan Marichal, although Marichal got his 52 shutouts in the national league.
- 6:49But Juan now, of course, with the Boston Red Sox. So technically Marichal has more shutouts.
- 6:56Too high. Two balls and no strikes on Brinkman.
- 7:00Sotomayor's 346th game as a Yankee. That ties in with Herb Pinnock for seventh place on the Yankees all-time list.
- 7:09Brinkman takes down Low with three balls and no strikes.
- 7:14Of course, Whitey Ford pitched more games than any other Yankee pitcher. 498.
- 7:22And he's number one on the list.
- 7:24There's a strike. Three balls and a strike to Brinkman leading off with the Tigers. Bottom half, the first inning, no score.
- 7:30Yankees trying to win their fifth straight game of the year.
- 7:36Sotomayor rocks back and deals a 3-1 pitch to Brinkman.
- 7:39Get in the air to center field. Mercer going back. Still going.
- 7:42He's there now. He's got it. One down.
- 7:45Sotomayor coming back from a 3-0 count and getting Brinkman to fly deep to Mercer in center field.
- 7:52That was a score from New York. In fact, no score because it's nothing-nothing.
- 7:55Cardinals and the Mets in the first game with doubleheader. No score after an inning of play.
- 8:01Pretty good pitching duel there, just as it is here, huh, Bill? Gibson and Sievers?
- 8:05Yeah, they might play that game in about an hour.
- 8:09Here's a really old Rodriguez, the third baseman. Right-handed batter.
- 8:14He takes a breaking ball for a strike.
- 8:19On deck, Jim Northrup, the right fielder.
- 8:22Sotomayor gets a new ball, turns his back to the mound, rubs it up.
- 8:27I'm reading about those baseballs today. They're made in Haiti. Yep.
- 8:33And it's cowhide. Now it's to the horse side, right? Right.
- 8:38Breaking ball is hit in the air to right field. Bloomberg moving back.
- 8:41He stops now. Andrick. And he's got it. Two down.
- 8:44Rodriguez going to Ron Bloomberg in right field.
- 8:49I had a little article in the financial section of the Detroit paper.
- 8:53You know how many baseballs that the major leagues use during a season?
- 8:59No idea. Over 300,000 baseballs.
- 9:04Lot of cowhide.
- 9:08Here's Northrup. Takes outside a ball.
- 9:15Northrup for left-handed batter. Two out, nobody on. We're at the bottom of the first, no score.
- 9:22Nettles in close at third. Sotomayor kicks and deals.
- 9:26Misses inside. Two balls, no strikes.
- 9:30Nettles at third. Mason at short. Michael at second. Hegan at first.
- 9:34White Mercer and Ron Bloomberg in the outfield reading from left to right.
- 9:39Thurman Mutsen doing the catching. Mel Sotomayor has his sign.
- 9:43Rocks back. And the 2-0 pitch to Northrup. Swung on it on the ground. A short stop.
- 9:47Dug out there by Jim Mason. Fine throw the first in plenty of time.
- 9:51And Northrup is out. So Sotomayor gets the Tigers out 1-2-3.
- 9:55And after one, score. Yankees nothing. The Tigers nothing.

- 11:02Okay, William, we're ready to go again.
- 11:10And we're waiting on Bobby Mercer to come out for the Yankees.
- 11:15Here comes Bobby. Bobby a little slow getting out of the dugout.
- 11:17The Yankees will send up their left-handed hitters, their power hitters, Mercer, Bloomberg, and Nettles to face Joe Coleman here.
- 11:25In the top half of the second inning, there's no score yet.
- 11:34Mercer on the air batting a.385. He's 5 for 13 with a run batted in.
- 11:47He's been walked five times this year.
- 11:51So they're very careful with it.
- 11:54Now we're ready to go and Coleman's first pitch.
- 11:57It's on the outside corner for strike.
- 11:59The outfield and the infield swung around toward right field for Mercer.
- 12:03Leading off for the Yankees, top half of the second inning.
- 12:07Coleman's 0-1 pitch.
- 12:09This is outside, 1-1, Joe working on the outside part of the plate.
- 12:13325 feet here down the right field line.
- 12:16It's a double-deck stance.
- 12:18The top deck juts out over the field so actually it's shorter.
- 12:22370 to right center, 440 dead center.
- 12:25Swung and fouled off on the third base side.
- 12:28Little number to Dick Houser, the third base coach.
- 12:30He inspects the ball and gives it back to Coleman.
- 12:33Houser coaching a third for the Yankees.
- 12:35Elston Howard coaching it first.
- 12:42A ball and two strikes on Mercer.
- 12:46Coleman with an excellent fork ball. Ball goes down and away from a left-handed hitter.
- 12:52The 1-2 pitch to Mercer. There it is.
- 12:54Hit on the ground to second base.
- 12:56Sutherland's up with it, throws to the pitcher covering in time.
- 12:59Norm Kay started to get that ball but Sutherland, the second baseman, called him off.
- 13:04And Gary Sutherland, the second baseman, picked it up and threw to Coleman covering.
- 13:09So Mercer is out, 4-1, one down, and Ron Bloomberg is the batter.
- 13:18Bloomberg, 4 for 10 this year, that's Neiman 400, has a run battered in.
- 13:25Two of those four hits against the left-hander, Tom Hilvendorf, the Cleveland Indians.
- 13:30Boomer takes outside for ball.
- 13:34On deck, Greg Nettles, one out and nobody on.
- 13:38Top of the second, no score.
- 13:41Curve ball misses outside, it's two balls, those strikes.
- 13:45Coleman really working away from the Yankee left-handed hitters.
- 13:54There's a pitch on the outside corner, it's 2-1.
- 14:00Well, Reitz hit a home run for the Cardinals.
- 14:04Nobody on. As Bloomberg takes outside, it's 3-1.
- 14:09So the Cardinals lead the Mets 1-0 with the Mets batting in the...
- 14:14Cardinals might still be batting in the top of the second.
- 14:17Anyway, it's 1-0 Cardinals over the Mets.
- 14:20Down low, ball four, Bloomberg walks.
- 14:24Bloomberg, the first base, with one out here, the top of the second,
- 14:28and the batter will be Greg Nettles, the Yankee third baseman.
- 14:31Nettles batting 2-31 so far, he's three for 13.
- 14:37Two home runs, three runs batted in.
- 14:40Left-handed batter, Bill Sudeikis moves into the on-deck circle.
- 14:44Bloomberg with a short lead at first, he's held there by Norm Cash.
- 14:48Nettles takes a fast ball on the outside corner for strikes.
- 14:52Coleman isn't giving in to the Yankee left-handed hitters,
- 14:56he's keeping that ball on the outside part of the plate.
- 14:59Now Nettles hit a home run in the opener against Cleveland,
- 15:02out in the left center.
- 15:05Down low, scooped up by Bill Freehand, it's 1-1.
- 15:13It's 365 feet to the left center here at Tiger Stadium,
- 15:16340 down the left field line.
- 15:19Center field, the deepest part of the park, it's 440 feet there,
- 15:23as Coleman sets.
- 15:24Throws the first base, they almost got Bloomberg.
- 15:27Coleman was leaning towards second, and he doled back in safely.
- 15:34Ron Bloomberg really leaning towards second base,
- 15:37had to dive back in and had to tag by Norm Cash.
- 15:42Now Coleman wants another sign from his catcher Bill Freehand.
- 15:47Bloomberg now with a little shorter lead at first, he's checked by Coleman.
- 15:51The 1-1 pitch, swung on, popped up, up behind first base in short right field.
- 15:55In foul territory now, the second baseman Southerman back out there,
- 15:58and he's got it.
- 16:02So Nettles just missing a fastball, fouls out to the second baseman,
- 16:06Gary Southerman, for out number two, Bloomberg still at first,
- 16:10and that will bring in the Yankees designated hitter, Bill Sudeikis.
- 16:17Sudeikis a switch hitter, and so far this year he's batting at 286.
- 16:21He's four for 14 with two runs batted in.
- 16:28Now the set by Coleman, and the pitch to Sudeikis, down low ball.
- 16:34Gene Michael moving into the on deck circle.
- 16:37Two men out, Ron Bloomberg at first base, no score with a top half to second inning.
- 16:42The Yankees playing the Tigers, the Yankees in first place in the East,
- 16:45have won four and lost none.
- 16:50No throw the first, Bloomberg is back.
- 16:53Coleman with a good move over the first base.
- 17:00Now the set by the tall right-hander, there goes Bloomberg, the pitch is Luke Fowl,
- 17:04down the left field line, hits on a tarp and bounces back into the foul territory.
- 17:11Well the countdown, one and one on Bill Sudeikis.
- 17:17Bloomberg off and running with the pitch, they have to go back to first base.
- 17:25Raining just a bit harder here at Tiger Stadium, forecast for rain, temperature in the 50s.
- 17:35Now the set, Bloomberg leads.
- 17:39Coleman takes a long look over there, then throws the first base, Ron is back.
- 17:46Yankee designated hitters are five for 15.
- 17:51One-one pitch, swung on and missed.
- 17:54One and two on Sudeikis, through a fastball buy-in.
- 18:04Yankees are one-four, lost none, they're in first place.
- 18:07The Brewers are one-two and lost one, they're a game and a half out.
- 18:10Baltimore is one, East Baltimore is put four.
- 18:15Pitch to Sudeikis is swung on and missed, struck him out, got him on a forkball.
- 18:19That's all for the Yankees in the second.
- 18:21No runs, no hits, there was a walk and a man left on base.
- 18:25We're going to the bottom half of second inning.
- 18:27Yankees nothing, Tigers nothing.
- 18:30The people never thought of me as much of a lover.
- 18:33They think of Cascio Blanca instead of Casanova.
- 18:37They don't know the real me.
- 18:39I can fall in love too.
- 18:41In fact, I fell in love with my first love.
- 18:43We met at the bar.
- 18:45I couldn't wait to get my hands on her.
- 18:47I walked over to her, I picked her up and then I knocked her down.
- 18:51She was the best glass of beer I ever had.
- 18:54It was draft beer, fresh, smooth, clean.
- 18:57And ever since I can't get draft beer out of my mind.
- 19:01So now I get real draft beer out of a can, a can of Peel's real draft.
- 19:07If you want a beer you can fall in love with, try Peel's real draft.
- 19:11It's just as fresh and smooth and clean as the kind I used to drink.
- 19:15Now that I've discovered Peel's real draft, I'm so happy it's driving me insane.
- 19:22Peel's real draft and I don't feel you the same.
- 19:29Peel Brothers, we're in Massachusetts.
- 19:33Now we're talking about Mel Stablamaya starting his 346th game.
- 19:43When you think of Whitey Ford, 498 games, Bill.
- 19:47That's something.
- 19:49That's a lot of pitches. Yep.
- 19:53Whitey's number one on the Yankee list, right? Yep.
- 19:58Here's number one on the Tiger list, Al Kaline.
- 20:01Kaline starting his 23rd season in a Tiger uniform, right handed batter leading off against Ottelmeyer.
- 20:07Bottom of the second and no score. Al takes inside a ball.
- 20:13Ralph Hauke said this fella will not put a glove on this year.
- 20:17He's just going to swing the bat, nothing else.
- 20:19He'll be the designated hitter all year long for the Tigers.
- 20:22Breaking ball is too low to Kaline, two balls, no strikes.
- 20:35Now looking for a side, he's got it now.
- 20:38Rocks back and the 2-0 pitch to Kaline.
- 20:41Swung on it on the ground, in the hole, base hit left field.
- 20:44Fast nettles, fast naces, bites in, gets the throws back in the second base.
- 20:49So Kaline leads off the second inning for the Tigers by singling sharply in the hole between the third base,
- 20:55the nettles, and the shortstop bases.
- 20:57He's on it first base and that'll bring in Willie Horton, the left fielder for the Tigers.
- 21:04Horton the right handed batter.
- 21:08Batting and even two under the spring. He's four for 20.
- 21:12He did two home runs already though.
- 21:15They were both bases empty home runs because he only has two RBIs.
- 21:20Strong, Willie Horton.
- 21:23They play him to pull on the left side of the infield.
- 21:25Mason way over in the hole at shortstop.
- 21:27Nettles deep behind the bag at third as Sadelmeier sets and deals to Horton.
- 21:33Tried it on the outside corner for strikes.
- 21:40Dick Kuzuski, the Tiger first base coach says something to Horton.
- 21:51And says something to Al Kaline as Kaline leads from first.
- 21:58Set by Sadelmeier and the pitch.
- 22:01Down the dirt a sinker. It's one and one.
- 22:04On deck Norm Cash. No score with the bottom half of the second inning.
- 22:07Kaline at first base. He let off his England inning by singling the left field.
- 22:12And the count. One and one on Willie Horton.
- 22:19Horton stands up even with the plate.
- 22:22And the pitch to it. Swung on. Hit and line drive. The shortstop comes out of the glove.
- 22:26Mason gets the ball in that field. Throws the second in time to force Kaline.
- 22:30That ball was right to Mason at shortstop. A shot.
- 22:33I think he tried to get the ball out of the glove quickly to try to double Kaline at first base.
- 22:38And the ball came out of the glove. That's exactly what happened Bill.
- 22:41You could see him take his eye and take a look at Kaline.
- 22:44And that could have been very embarrassing.
- 22:46It turned out that Kaline had to turn around and go back to first.
- 22:49And then he couldn't get the second in time. So the Yankees got a big break there.
- 22:54There's one out now. Horton on it first.
- 22:56He's been playing behind him in the batters Norm Cash. The Tiger first base.
- 23:00Left handed batter with good power.
- 23:03The pitch to Cash. Outside of ball.
- 23:07No score. We're at the bottom of the second.
- 23:09One out, one on for the Tigers. That's Horton at first base.
- 23:12Yankees got a break there though. Horton's on instead of Kaline.
- 23:15Kaline I think a little faster than Horton on the bases.
- 23:19Now the set. And the one-oh pitch.
- 23:22On the outside corner. It's one and one.
- 23:29Yankee outfield playing Cash to pull.
- 23:31Bloomberg deep in right field near the line.
- 23:33Mercer over in right center.
- 23:36And Roy White playing a left center.
- 23:38So there's a lot of room down the left field line.
- 23:43Enfield also swung around toward the right side.
- 23:46One-one pitch to Cash. Chain jump.
- 23:50And it's now been to the Tiger dugout.
- 23:52And Cash, the chip fell off Cash's bat and went down the first base line.
- 23:56Well he's got one of those bats built with that hollow in the top.
- 23:59I thought that wasn't allowed.
- 24:00Well those are the Japanese bats.
- 24:02And I think last year Lou Brock started that.
- 24:05And evidently it's legal this year.
- 24:07They wouldn't let Chubb Feeney, the president of the United States League,
- 24:11disallow that for a while. And evidently now they can use them.
- 24:16Telling the Perls they're using that thing. They just chipped out.
- 24:21One and two on Cash with one out.
- 24:23Horton leading from first.
- 24:25And the pitch.
- 24:26Swung on one hopper to Michael.
- 24:28Throw him out on the right field.
- 24:30Around second base is Willie Horton.
- 24:31Takes him to third and he'll make it there.
- 24:33And Cash holds it first.
- 24:36And we'll see here in a moment how they score that.
- 24:39That was the one hopper that just chipped under Michael's glove
- 24:43and went under him and out on the right field.
- 24:45And it's a base hit for Norm Cash.
- 24:47Boy that's really a gift for Cash.
- 24:49Perfect double play ball.
- 24:52Now it's base to play at home.
- 24:56Tigers now runners at first and third only one out.
- 25:02And here's Nicky Stanley, the center fielder.
- 25:05Nicky's low to the infield back looking for twos.
- 25:13No score yet. Bottom of the second.
- 25:17It's a second base hit off Sodomar.
- 25:20Both of them got in this inning.
- 25:22K-line let off by a singling to Lethfield.
- 25:24He was forced to second.
- 25:26Here's the pitch now to Stanley.
- 25:28Call strike a slider on the outside corner.
- 25:34Sodomar would certainly like either a strikeout or a pop-up here.
- 25:38Maybe a nice little soft round ball to the short stuff.
- 25:44It started to.
- 25:45Here's the set now.
- 25:46Runners are checked and the 0-1 pitch.
- 25:50House to third.
- 25:51Up with it is Nittles, the second for one, back to first.
- 25:54It's time for a double play.
- 25:57Big Nittles starting to five, four to three double play.
- 26:00And the Yankees get out of the inning.
- 26:02For the Tigers, no runs on two hits.
- 26:05There were no Yankees errors and there were two men left on base.
- 26:10At the end of two, it's the Yankees nothing and the Tigers nothing.

- 26:33The warehouse is operated by Catholic Relief Services.
- 26:37The concept is that we get staff, we get food and water for the disaster team
- 26:41and then we get supplies.
- 26:42We get it all out at once.
- 26:44We have shortwave radio equipment, transceivers to communicate among the team.
- 26:48The center functions on a daily basis, sending food, clothing and medicines
- 26:53where they're needed.
- 26:54This is the fastest way to get it there.
- 26:56We'll just ship it commercially to...

- 27:07Support CRS through the American Catholic Overseas Aid Fund
- 27:12and the Empire State Bank, New York 1001.
- 27:15We're ready to go on a moment's notice.
- 27:18This is the New York Yankee Baseball Network.
- 27:20Let's pause for station identification.
- 27:25This is WQBK and WQBK-FR-Mensler.
- 27:29There you will find me, John Watson in John's World
- 27:32from 11 to 3 weekdays and 11 to 4 on Saturday.
- 27:41Gene Michael leading off of the Yankees.
- 27:43Top of the third, he takes outside a ball.
- 27:46Over to the score again that inning.
- 27:48Because of that double play, it was no runs on two hits, no errors
- 27:51and only one man left on base for the Tigers in the second.
- 27:54I said two.
- 27:55So if you're keeping score, change that.
- 27:57One man left on.
- 27:58Michael pulls one down the first base line.
- 28:01He's backed up by Norm Cash and he takes himself.
- 28:04One down.
- 28:08No score here in the third inning.
- 28:10And Jim Mason, the Yankee shortstop, steps in against Joe Coleman.
- 28:20Mason, the left-handed batter.
- 28:29He takes a second ball on the outside corner for a strike.
- 28:31Well, Joe Tory just hit his first home run with a man on.
- 28:37Definitely that's in the third inning.
- 28:39So it's at least 3-0 now.
- 28:42The Cardinals over the Mets in the third inning.
- 28:48Ball to strike on Mason.
- 28:50One out, nobody on here.
- 28:51No score.
- 28:53Outside, two balls and a strike.
- 28:58The Cardinals really shook up their pitching staff.
- 29:00Yeah, I'll say.
- 29:02The only one they kept was Bob Gibson.
- 29:05Get on the ground and the hole.
- 29:07Backhanded by Brakeman, the shortstop.
- 29:09Long throw, the first in time.
- 29:10Got him by his step.
- 29:12That's been played by Eddie Brakeman, the Tiger shortstop.
- 29:16He was playing a Mason to pull just a bit and Mason slapped the ball in the hole.
- 29:20Brakeman went over, backhanded it and made a strong throw the first in time.
- 29:24So they're two outs.
- 29:25And here's Roy White, the Yankee left fielder.
- 29:28Roy was hit by a pitch his first time up.
- 29:33He's been an excellent leadoff bat so far.
- 29:35He's scored six runs.
- 29:36Takes down a little ball.
- 29:40Got a great on base average too, Bill.
- 29:42Yeah, that's what you want from your leadoff bat.
- 29:45It takes a little pressure off your batting leadoff.
- 29:47You know, you do a lot of things.
- 29:48Want the ball, look at four pitches.
- 29:53Two high, two balls, no strikes at once.
- 29:59Rod Gregerson close the third.
- 30:02As Coleman works fast, a right-hander kicks and deals a fast ball.
- 30:05Hit a foul up the middle, knocked down by Coleman.
- 30:07He picks it up, throws on the first in time.
- 30:11Coleman hit White with one in the first inning.
- 30:15And White hit one back at him.
- 30:17Coleman knocked it down, threw him out.
- 30:19It's over the Yankees in the third, three up and three down.
- 30:22We go into the bottom half of the third inning.
- 30:24It's the Yankees nothing and the Tigers nothing.
- 30:28Keep prepared, are you ready to get involved?
- 30:56You want to, you can't, you want to right now.
- 31:00Let me lay it on you.
- 31:02You know, you can help a lot of boys be prepared by being a leader in scouting.
- 31:06I mean it.
- 31:07Scouting today is a lot more than you think.
- 31:11Be prepared, are you ready to get involved?
- 31:16Be prepared, are you ready to take the lead?
- 31:21Oh, let's get away from the rule, help me talk, I'm going to keep you ready.
- 31:37Well in New York, in a pitching duel between Bob Gibson and Tom Seaver,
- 31:41the Cardinals lead at three nothing after two and a half innings of play.
- 31:45Home runs by Reese and a two on home run by Joe Torre in the top of the third.
- 31:50The Cardinals lead three nothing over the Mets, over J.
- 31:53Here's Bill Frehan leading off against Mel Sodomir, bottom of the third,
- 31:56in a game that's scoreless here in Tiger Stadium.
- 32:00Frehan takes down low ball.
- 32:02This fellow's been hot.
- 32:03He's got at least one base hit in each of the Tigers' first five ball games.
- 32:11And he's batting five seventy-one, he's eight for fourteen.
- 32:15Check swing, slow hopper in the second base.
- 32:17Hegan cuts it off, throws the first, in time to Sodomir.
- 32:21Mike Hegan got that slow hopper before it reached the infield.
- 32:25Actually the dirt part of the infield, he cut in front of Michael and grabbed it,
- 32:29turned around and threw to Sodomir in time to get free hands.
- 32:32So there's one away.
- 32:35That was a check swing, slow hopper, and this infield is slow.
- 32:40Gave Hegan a lot of time to get that ball.
- 32:43Of course it was a tough play for him.
- 32:44He had to turn completely around and throw behind him to Sodomir.
- 32:48Now got the bag and the ball in time to get free hands.
- 32:52Here's Gary Sutherland, the second baseman.
- 32:55Takes a breaking ball too high.
- 32:58Sutherland had a good opener here with the Tigers.
- 33:02Picked up four base hits.
- 33:07Now he just went down the right field line, it's going to be a base hit.
- 33:09Mike Waddleway to wall, Bloomberg's over, cuts it off, throws it around first,
- 33:14goes into second, and he will stand up there with a double.
- 33:16Gary Sutherland has really been tough on Yankee pitching.
- 33:21He was four for four against Klein and Fred Bean in the opener here.
- 33:28Picked up three singles against Steve Klein and a double against Fred Bean.
- 33:36So he was four for four, he leads off here by doubling down the right field line,
- 33:40and he's five for five against Yankee pitching.
- 33:42Sutherland down at second with one down and the batter Ed Brinkman, the shortstop.
- 33:50Brinkman's been up once against Sodomir, he flies to center field.
- 33:53Right-handed batter, no score.
- 33:56In the bottom half, the third inning.
- 34:00Sodomir's first pitch now to Brinkman, down low ball.
- 34:08Yankee outfield straight away, they're in close for Brinkman,
- 34:11especially Bloomberg in right field, he's way in.
- 34:20Now Sodomir sets up again, checks out on that second, and deals to the plate.
- 34:24Up high, two balls, no strikes.
- 34:34Games in the American League, Milwaukee's playing at Cleveland.
- 34:37Baltimore at Boston, Chicago at Minnesota.
- 34:40Texas playing at California tonight.
- 34:43The next pitch, slider outside, three and oh.
- 34:51Sodomir ran to count three balls, no strike to Brinkman in the first inning,
- 34:55and came back and got him to fly to center field.
- 34:58See what he does here now.
- 35:00Montecarillo Rodriguez, the third baseman.
- 35:03A pitch, right in there for called strike three and one.
- 35:12Mel looking for his second win of the year.
- 35:17Cleveland in the open at Shea, by a score of six to one.
- 35:21Here's the three-one pitch to Brinkman now.
- 35:23Swung on, lined to left field, White moving back.
- 35:26He's under it and he's got it.
- 35:27Settling, tagged his second, but he'll hold there as White throws a strike into net over third.
- 35:32Well, there are two down.
- 35:34Brinkman hits the ball hard, but right to the left field to Roy White.
- 35:37Here's the Tiger third baseman, Aurelio Rodriguez.
- 35:43He's been up once wide to Bloomberg and right field.
- 35:50No score.
- 35:53Gary Sutherland at second base with two outs here in the third inning.
- 36:01Rodriguez hasn't gotten started this spring.
- 36:03He's three for 22.
- 36:08Aspado-Meyer sets some deals, down low ball.
- 36:17Jim Northrop on deck.
- 36:21Still drizzling here at Tiger Stadium.
- 36:24Aspado-Meyer sets up and the one-oh pitch.
- 36:28Swung on, lined to center field, that's going to be a base hit.
- 36:30Digging around third base to Sutherland.
- 36:32Murphy's got the ball.
- 36:33The strong throw home will not be in time.
- 36:35The one-oh is going to second.
- 36:38The throw there is in time.
- 36:40And Rodriguez is out trying to go to second.
- 36:43But the Tigers four, as Aurelio Rodriguez singles sharply to center field,
- 36:48scoring Sutherland, and Rodriguez is cut down at second,
- 36:53much from the catcher to Michael, the second baseman covering.
- 36:58So the Tigers in the third to have one run are two hits.
- 37:01There were no Yankee errors and nobody left on base.
- 37:05At the end of three, the Tigers won and the Yankees nothing.
- 37:12Now the Yankees have introduced an all-new scorecard,
- 37:15which will be changed frequently during the season.
- 37:18The new and large format with full four colors features a page of photos
- 37:23of incoming American League opposing stars,
- 37:26plus up-to-date rosters of both the Yankees and the opposing team.
- 37:30And they're nice, large score blocks and a wonderful feature on where are they now.
- 37:36Well, let's cause a look at Yankee players of the recent championship era.
- 37:41There will be improvements and changes in the official Yankee scorebook
- 37:44throughout the season, and it's on sale only at Shea Stadium,
- 37:48and it's only on sale when the Yankees are home.
- 37:50It's about just 50 cents.
- 37:52So that's the Yankees' all-new scorecard talking about where are they now
- 37:57before yesterday's or before Tuesday's ballgame.
- 38:00Got a chance to see a former Yankee shortstop, Tommy Trix.
- 38:04So he's right here in Detroit.
- 38:06That's a pretty good thing to have in a scorebook.
- 38:08Pick up your 50 cents at Shea Stadium when the Yankees are home.
- 38:16Well, we go now into the top of the fourth,
- 38:18and here's a scooter to tell you about it.
- 38:20All right, Frank and, uh, Frank, I mean, Bill, all right.
- 38:24Frank is coming in as soon as Bill leaves.
- 38:28Mike Higgin takes a strike on the first pitch by Coleman.
- 38:31Higgin bounced into a double play his first time up,
- 38:34runs up to bunt, takes it low, and outside it's 1-1.
- 38:38The rain started just before the ballgame got underway, and it hasn't stopped.
- 38:43It's not a very heavy rain, but a lot of umbrellas pop down on the stands.
- 38:49Swing and a miss. One ball, two strikes.
- 38:56Through the first three innings, the Yankees got two men on base.
- 38:59Roy White getting hit with a pitch and a walk to Bloomberg, but no base hits.
- 39:03That's strike three called. Higgin is screaming at the plate.
- 39:08But it was a breaking pitch that caught the inside corner.
- 39:11Coleman chalks up his second strikeout,
- 39:15and it will bring up Dermen Munson, who, trying to check his swing, bounced out to first base his first time up.
- 39:25It's going to be a tough ballgame today, Frank Metsa.
- 39:28Coleman looks like he has the real good stuff out there.
- 39:30Mel was falling behind the hitters.
- 39:32If he settles down, it's going to be an awfully close ballgame.
- 39:35Yep.
- 39:39All right, the pitch to Munson is outside a sidearm curve, ball one.
- 39:44On deck, Bobby Mercer.
- 39:49Joe Coleman has to be one of the better pitchers in the American League.
- 39:52He really doesn't get credit.
- 39:54That's true.
- 39:56The right-handed pitch is hit high in the air, but his center field and Mickey Stanley, with a lot of room to roam,
- 40:01backs up his under-it and makes the catch.
- 40:06Sutherich two away.
- 40:08Now Bobby Mercer, who bounced out to second base his first time up.
- 40:18Coleman's dad, Joe Coleman Sr.,
- 40:22pitched in the American League for a long time with Philadelphia A's, some with the Boston Red Sox.
- 40:31Pitch to Bobby on the outside corner, strike one called.
- 40:34On deck, Ronnie Bloomberg.
- 40:36I'm sure I've asked you this before, Bill, is there any resemblance between Joe Jr. and Joe Sr.?
- 40:41No, not in their pitching styles at all.
- 40:44Strike two, he hit the outside corner, now the inside corner.
- 40:50No, Joe Sr. was strictly an overhand fastball pitcher, a curve and a changeup.
- 40:55Joe, as we've told you, he can come overhand sidearm, he's got a slider, he's got a fall ball,
- 41:01pitch low with that overhand curve and it's one ball, two strikes.
- 41:08Makes it tough on the hitter.
- 41:09Coleman comes from doing so many different positions.
- 41:14Got to be ready all the time.
- 41:16And he throws different pitches off those different positions.
- 41:20There's the one-two pitch sidearm, a bounce in front of the plate.
- 41:22Coleman, who was left up with it, flips easily to catch and the Yankees are easily retired here.
- 41:28In the top of the fourth, three up, three down.
- 41:31And in the middle of the fourth inning, the Tigers won the Yankees nothing.
- 41:35No, no, no.
- 41:36Excuse me.
- 41:41This is Whitey Ford for Latham Ford.
- 41:43I was fortunate enough to win a lot of games with the Yankees and there's one thing I learned.
- 41:48Each one of those victories was a team effort.
- 41:51So I feel right at home with the Latham Ford team, the salespeople, the service staff,
- 41:57the secretaries, everybody works together.
- 42:00Their goal, to give each customer a quality new or used car and the guaranteed service that goes with it.
- 42:08And you know what?
- 42:09They win every game.
- 42:12When people call WQBK radio, they say such nice things.
- 42:16It makes us blush.
- 42:17Thanks.
- 42:19QBK keeps your company, AM and FM.
- 42:23I see that Mr. Ray Kroc has said that he will offer a public apology to his ball players
- 42:28and to the Houston Astros for his remarks on the PA system out in San Diego.
- 42:32Oh, I didn't read it.
- 42:33Is that in the afternoon paper, Frank?
- 42:34In the afternoon paper, he said from his home that he told the press he would issue a public apology
- 42:43as had been requested by Commissioner Kuhn and the league president, Shelfini, and Marvin Miller.
- 42:50Well, I guess he's so used to those McDonald Hamburgers coming out perfect every time.
- 42:54He wants the ball players to do the same thing.
- 42:57I'd hissed out of my assistant off of swinging a missed strike wide.
- 43:00That was really something, grabbing that PA system mic and right over it.
- 43:05First he wanted the shrieker arrested, locked up, throw the key away.
- 43:09Then he got on the ball players.
- 43:12Inside this one of mine.
- 43:16Well, that's what happens when you're very successful in so many things
- 43:20and then you see something that doesn't go quite right.
- 43:27Tigers won, Yankees nothing, bottom of the fourth.
- 43:30Little bit high, says McCoy, the play-dumb player, and it's two balls and a strike.
- 43:41Northrop bounced the short his first time up.
- 43:44He bounced it back off the screen.
- 43:47Evens the count of two and two.
- 43:50At the end of three now is the Cardinals three and the Mets nothing.
- 43:53Two homers off, Tom Siever.
- 43:56Joe Torrey with a mad on and Ken Reitz with the bases empty, I think.
- 44:02Well, Siever lately has been bothered by the long ball.
- 44:08The 2-2 pitch hit deep to right center field, Mercedal, both scores left.
- 44:12Now comes in a couple of steps and makes the catch.
- 44:16The deepest part of this ballpark is in center field, left center and right center.
- 44:21Well, not quite left center and right center.
- 44:24But it's 440 in dead center and 415 or about 100 feet to the right of that and 400 or 100 feet to the left.
- 44:32It takes a good pair of legs to play center field in this ballpark.
- 44:34This is why I like Yankee Stadium.
- 44:39K-line, the designated hitter, hit a hard single between third and short to left field his first time up.
- 44:46And bounce it just one to third.
- 44:47Nettles up with it.
- 44:49Fires to first and K-line is retired.
- 44:51That ball almost went under Nettles' glove.
- 44:56It didn't feel very soft.
- 44:57The ball is not coming up.
- 44:58That ground ball through Gene Michael that went for a base hit before just didn't come up, skidded right under his glove.
- 45:05You're right, Frank.
- 45:06On a very slow infield.
- 45:08That way at J when the Yankees play there.
- 45:11And here, too, you've got to really stay down, keep that glove down on the ground.
- 45:16Look at that Mason down there.
- 45:18He's playing third base.
- 45:19He's got two third basemen.
- 45:20Yep, Willie Horton up.
- 45:21He could shake hands with Nettles and back on the edge of the outfield grass.
- 45:24The knuckle curve goes through Muntz and back to the screen and it's ball one.
- 45:28Willie Horton lined to the shortstop his first time up and Mason took his eye off the ball, went off his glove in a shallow left center field.
- 45:36But K-line who was hustling back to the bag was fourth to second.
- 45:45Willie stands well up on home plate.
- 45:50Right hand batter holds the bat straight up and down.
- 45:52The pitch is over and it's one ball, one strike.
- 45:55Two out, nobody in.
- 45:57Bottom of the fourth, bag is out in front, one and nothing.
- 46:00Still a lot of yucksters out there on the left field.
- 46:02They must be safety patrol kids.
- 46:04I see they got those bright orange belts on.
- 46:07Uh huh.
- 46:08And you can hear them.
- 46:10Tiger fans.
- 46:13One-one pitch.
- 46:14It's deep to right center field.
- 46:15That's going to be in there for extra bases.
- 46:17Boombirds chasing it down.
- 46:19It's rolling the wall.
- 46:20He's up with it.
- 46:21Horton is the last second.
- 46:23He's going to try to third.
- 46:24Here's Michael Crow.
- 46:25They got him.
- 46:26Oh, Horton hesitated at second base and looked at the coach instead of looking at the ball.
- 46:31And at fraction of a second he waited rounding the bag, crossed him.
- 46:35A beautiful relay from Bloomberg, number nine, to Michael, number four, to Eddels, number five.
- 46:42It's a double, but he's thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.
- 46:46No runs.
- 46:47A base hit.
- 46:48No errors and nobody left.
- 46:50At the end of four, it's the Tigers one and the Yankees nothing.
- 46:54Hey, we remember the 50s better than anybody.
- 47:01Okay, what do you remember?
- 47:02Well, I remember the lyrics to all the rock and roll songs.
- 47:04Oh yeah, the soundtracks and the drums, all those kind of things.
- 47:06What else?
- 47:07I remember every inch of my first car.
- 47:09You too.
- 47:10You remember wrestling on TV, Johnny Goh, Gorgeous Boy.
- 47:12You remember polio?
- 47:13Polio?
- 47:14Yeah.
- 47:15Oh, I remember my mom and dad wouldn't let me go swimming at the public pool.
- 47:17Oh yeah, you could even go to the movies.
- 47:19Mark and John's poster.
- 47:20That's right.
- 47:21So they crippled kids and nine lunges.
- 47:22Oh, that was a big scare.
- 47:23It's like everything else from the 50s.
- 47:24It'll never come back.
- 47:25But it is.
- 47:26Polio's coming back?
- 47:27I thought the vaccines knocked it out for good.
- 47:29Well, that's what everybody thinks.
- 47:30But last year there was a big increase in the number of polio cases reported.
- 47:33How come?
- 47:34Well, because people forget to get their boosters and they don't have their children immunized
- 47:37at all.
- 47:38So diseases like polio, diphtheria, and tetanus can strike again, especially kids.
- 47:41You mean Cynthia, we got kids, a boy and a girl?
- 47:43We have five.
- 47:44Have you taken them to a physician, a clinic, or a local health department to be immunized?
- 47:47Oh no, no.
- 47:48Oh, I forgot.
- 47:49That's odd.
- 47:50Why?
- 47:51If you don't remember anything, you're not going to remember anything.
- 47:52If you don't remember immunization means protection, you don't remember the 50s at all.
- 47:56This message brought to you by the American Medical Association.
- 47:59Rod Rodney Bloomberg leads it off for the Yankees in the top of the fifth.
- 48:02He groups one, a radio Rodriguez near the fire line, just in fair territory, makes the
- 48:07catch at third.
- 48:09He jammed Bloomberg right on the hands with that one.
- 48:12Oh, one pitch, one out.
- 48:14Yankees still looking for their first base hit of the ballgame.
- 48:17Greg Nettles fly to the second baseman down the right field line, his first time up.
- 48:27Lights have been on here since the start of the ballgame.
- 48:33The drizzle has let up a little bit.
- 48:37Pitch to Nettles right down the middle, strike one call.
- 48:40Rodriguez way over towards shortstop, Brinkman over towards second base on the left side of the infield.
- 48:49Joe Coleman, the right-hander, side armor, bouncing ball at second, Sutherland gets the nice hop.
- 48:54Flips to Norm Cash and they're a two away.
- 48:57And Coleman's really making this game look easy to this point.
- 49:01He must make sure they catch that commercial flight they have this afternoon to go to Boston.
- 49:06Tom Siebers still giving up the gopher balls.
- 49:08Luke Brock has hit one with two men on.
- 49:12And now let's see, it's the Cardinals six and the Mets nothing at the end of three and a half.
- 49:16Wow. That's a tough thing, you know, pitcher gets that on his mind.
- 49:20And Tom Siebers just about the best pitcher in baseball.
- 49:24That home run ball can really get you in trouble.
- 49:27Wind must be blowing out of shape today.
- 49:30I, Bill Sudeikis, struck out his first time up.
- 49:32Bluffs to butt takes a strike.
- 49:35Should have scored out of Cleveland, the Indians five and Milwaukee two at the end of two innings.
- 49:40Now the Indians looking for their first win of the year.
- 49:43White Sox looking for their first win of the year.
- 49:47And I think the Pirates are too. There's a pretty giant tight one-on-one.
- 49:52And Boston just hoping to play. They haven't played in four days.
- 49:55They played Saturday and Friday and Saturday, I guess, and haven't played since.
- 49:59Well, the weather's especially up in that New England area.
- 50:02Swing and a miss. One ball, two strikes.
- 50:05Sudeikis the switch hitter batting left-handed against Coleman.
- 50:08Two out, nobody on, one nothing. The Tigers out in front.
- 50:12They scored in the third inning on the double by Sutherland,
- 50:16who is now five for five against Yankee pitching, and a two-out single by Rodriguez.
- 50:21A foul, that'll be out of play.
- 50:23Rodriguez chasing it, but it's back into the seats.
- 50:28Yankees are not having good cuts at Joe Coleman.
- 50:32Not that he's overpowering fast, but as we mentioned,
- 50:34he has so many deliveries and so many different pitches.
- 50:40On deck, Gene Michael.
- 50:48The pitch is low, and it's two and two.
- 50:57I think he's flying to Cleveland right after this ballgame.
- 51:04All right, the two-two delivery.
- 51:06Side armor, swing and a miss, and he has Sudeikis really fooled on that one.
- 51:11Third strikeout for Coleman. He sets the Yankees down in order,
- 51:15and in the middle of the fifth inning, as the Tigers won, the Yankees nothing.
- 51:19Oh, yes, I recall my first love quite well.
- 51:23Just the thought of her used to make my mouth run dry.
- 51:27Today I'd suffer for that.
- 51:29I remember when I first reached out and touched it.
- 51:32Oh, was she cold.
- 51:34But then who likes hot draft beer?
- 51:37That's right. My first love was draft beer.
- 51:41It was so fresh and smooth and creamy.
- 51:44I've been in love with it ever since.
- 51:46Only now I get it out of a can.
- 51:49A can appeals real draft.
- 51:51If you want a beer you can fall in love with, try Peel's Real Draft.
- 51:56It's just as fresh and smooth and creamy as the old days' kind.
- 52:01When you have a can of Peel's Real Draft around, you don't need a woman.
- 52:06And it certainly doesn't hurt to have one.
- 52:10Peel's Real Draft, I can feel you got it.
- 52:18Peel brothers, what a massive message she says.
- 52:26So as you mentioned, the Yankees will be flying to Cleveland right after the game.
- 52:29Four games over the weekend against the Indians.
- 52:32Then it's back to Yankee Stadium for three afternoon games.
- 52:35Next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday against the Boston Red Sox.
- 52:38That's really going to be a big series.
- 52:40The Red Sox, a team that must be beaten for anybody to contend, I think, in the American League East.
- 52:45You're absolutely right, Frank.
- 52:47All right, Norm Cash, who singled under Michael's glove in the second inning, leads it off.
- 52:54Cash, the veteran left hand batter, his melt first pitch.
- 52:58And it's taken a little bit low, ball one.
- 53:03The Tigers have five hits in one run.
- 53:05The Yankees, no hits and no runs.
- 53:09The next pitch is, oh foul, almost got Dick Progiuzzi in the coaching box at first base.
- 53:15Takes off the wall and Bloomberg will chase it down and foul territory.
- 53:21One on one.
- 53:28On deck is Mickey Stanley and he'll be followed by Phil Frehan.
- 53:37Done.
- 53:39Just popped out.
- 53:42I don't think it'll be out very long, but it has popped out very weak, son.
- 53:48There's a fair ball down the right field line.
- 53:51Cash is going to first base.
- 53:53He's going to try for two.
- 53:54Bloomberg's throw will not be in time and Cash is in with a double.
- 53:58Just inside the foul line between Hegan and the line.
- 54:09And that's the second double, third double for the Tigers.
- 54:15Off Mel Stoudelmeyer.
- 54:17Cash opens at the bottom of the fifth and Mickey Stanley the batter.
- 54:20Stanley bounced into a double player's first time up.
- 54:22Let's see if Ralph Mouth might be changing his tactics and go for a butt here or have Stanley try to hit the right field and get that run to the third.
- 54:32Ralph very seldom butted when he was managing the Yankees.
- 54:40Stretched by Stoudelmeyer.
- 54:43And the pitch he's trying to go to right field takes the pitch on the corner strike one.
- 54:47Yes, Stanley does want to go to right field.
- 54:49I have an idea that he may have to butt a little bit more here because there's really no speed at all in this ball.
- 54:53And whatsoever.
- 54:57Stanley a right hand batter.
- 55:02Stoudelmeyer gets the sign from Munson.
- 55:04Now checks Cash at second.
- 55:09And the pitch Stanley again trying to go to right field is low and inside one on one.
- 55:13Stoudelmeyer and Munson realize that.
- 55:15Ralph's a little bit upset about a story.
- 55:17It was in the paper yesterday.
- 55:18He said after the ball game he settled back in his chair in the office in the clubhouse.
- 55:23Asked the clubhouse man to bring him a beer and the clubhouse man promptly brought him ten.
- 55:28And Ralph said he got some mail today over that.
- 55:31And said Jim Campbell got a couple of phone calls.
- 55:33They worked out of a manager of he got going to drink ten beers after the ball game.
- 55:36Of course he didn't drink ten beers.
- 55:38The club man actually brought in a six pack in case the writers wanted to have a beer.
- 55:44But Ralph's a little bit upset about it.
- 55:46He should be.
- 55:47The reporters get you in trouble every time.
- 55:50All right Stoudelmeyer to the belt.
- 55:53Just a little bit low and it's two balls and a strike.
- 55:58Well it's a real battle here.
- 55:59A real duel.
- 56:00Stanley trying to go the opposite way to advance that runner.
- 56:04And Stoudelmeyer trying to keep him from doing that.
- 56:09Stanley had just stepped out to check Joe Schultz coaching at the bird.
- 56:15Cash leads the way.
- 56:17And he hits it to right field and he'll have to play it on one bounce.
- 56:21Cash will not score.
- 56:24But Stanley did his job.
- 56:27Did it even better.
- 56:28Got a base hit instead of a ground ball.
- 56:31So the Tigers now with runners at first and third.
- 56:36Nobody out in the bat of Bill Freon.
- 56:39Yankees in a tough spot here.
- 56:45Sure Mason and Michael will be playing back for a double play.
- 56:48Egan will have to hold the runner at first.
- 56:50Nettles will be even with the bag so he can go either way.
- 56:55What he brought us up on the dugout steps waving down to the bullpen.
- 56:58Somebody's going to start warming up.
- 57:00It's got to be McDowell.
- 57:02He put his hand way high over his head and way wide outside.
- 57:08Well I can understand high over the head but why way wide outside.
- 57:11He's a pretty big man.
- 57:12Big shoulders.
- 57:14Not that he's fat.
- 57:16The fat was the ten right.
- 57:20It was a double motion rank.
- 57:22I shouldn't say fat I should say chubby.
- 57:25All right runners at first and third.
- 57:27Nobody out.
- 57:28Mr. Freon grounded at third.
- 57:29They've got a whole case.
- 57:30Go to second.
- 57:31Michael comes to the play.
- 57:32Beautiful heads up play.
- 57:34Holy cow that was perfectly executed.
- 57:37Cash committed a cardinal sin by not breaking right away to break up the double play.
- 57:43He waited to nettle through the ball.
- 57:45Michael Michael then saw a cash break late through a perfect strike to Muntzen.
- 57:49Cash tried to nike Muntzen down.
- 57:51He did but Thurman held on to the ball and there were two outs and a runner at first base.
- 57:56Beautiful double play heads up.
- 57:58That play goes five four two.
- 58:04Well that's not base running and Bill Burton has been working on that with the Yankees all spring.
- 58:10Here's Gary Sutherland.
- 58:11He doubled and scored the only run of the third inning.
- 58:14Takes the slider lower ball one.
- 58:16I'm trying to think the last time I saw that double play.
- 58:19It's been a long long time.
- 58:20Absolutely.
- 58:21The only way you can get it is if Nettles does what he did and the runner at third does what he did.
- 58:25Nettles left him back to the bag then went to second.
- 58:29But that runner's got to break right away.
- 58:31Otherwise you take yourself right out of a big inning.
- 58:35Even if they get him at the plate there's still two on and only one out.
- 58:38As the ball hit the head of center they're finally going to get several and out.
- 58:41Bobby Murtha makes the catch.
- 58:45So the Yankees get a break for the Tigers.
- 58:47No runs, two hits, no errors and a man left.
- 58:50And at the end of five it's the Tigers won the Yankees nothing.
- 59:00Well many of us are still quite concerned about the energy crisis.
- 59:03First the problem of not enough gas and now gas and oil costing us so much more and more.
- 59:07Well many people have taken steps to greatly ease the big crunch on their wallets and to conserve fuel.
- 59:13They have purchased the amazing front wheel drive Subaru.
- 59:16Luigi Motorsales incorporated of Schenectady is the oldest and only exclusive Subaru dealer in the area.
- 59:22Luigi himself supervises and services the Subaru.
- 59:26Nowhere else will you find such personalized service.
- 59:29Even the salesmen aren't really salesmen.
- 59:31They're people like you and I.
- 59:33But after you talk with John and Mike you'll soon find out that they're also your friends.
- 59:37So why not do yourself a favor and see why so many people have switched to the Subaru
- 59:42and have done business with Luigi Motorsales incorporated.
- 59:451563 State Street in Schenectady the Subaru from Luigi.
- 59:49One of the front runners of the gas and economic pinch.
- 1:00:00This is the New York Yankee Baseball Network.
- 1:00:02We're going to take a quick pause for station identification.
- 1:00:06WQBK AM and FM, Wilford.
- 1:00:08Well you can hear me Jack Hoppe from 3 to 7 each day.
- 1:00:11What? It is 3 to 7?
- 1:00:12Oh I gotta go to work. Bye.
- 1:00:24Gene Michael will lead it off for the Yankees here on the top of the 6.
- 1:00:28Joe Coleman has Eldon Hitless and Gene takes the curve low and inside ball one.
- 1:00:33Michael bounced out the first base on the fiftieth his first time up.
- 1:00:37Tigers won, Yankees nothing.
- 1:00:43Gene the switch hitter batting left handed against Coleman.
- 1:00:46And the pitchers bounce the first again fair ball knocked down by Cash.
- 1:00:49Picked it up and stepped on the back.
- 1:00:51Just beats Michael.
- 1:00:52Almost stepped on Coleman's foot but they get Michael out and there's one away.
- 1:00:58That brings up Gene Mason rather.
- 1:01:01Jim Mason.
- 1:01:03Mason was robbed of a base hit and a fine play by Eddie Brinkman.
- 1:01:10Looks like they're finally going to play baseball in Boston Phil.
- 1:01:13It's nothing to nothing at the end of one with Jim Palmer pitching for Baltimore and Louis Teon for the Red Sox.
- 1:01:19All right Mason takes a pitch low ball one on deck Roy White.
- 1:01:32Low ball two, two and nothing.
- 1:01:38Mason has stepped back to look down at Dick House.
- 1:01:40The Yankees want to get a base run around that.
- 1:01:43They only had one ball at the outfield so far.
- 1:01:45Munson's fly ball to center.
- 1:01:48Low ball three, three and nothing.
- 1:01:50And only one other ball in the air.
- 1:01:53This nettles foul pop up.
- 1:02:02There's the strike three and one.
- 1:02:06Coleman has been rough on the left hand hitters.
- 1:02:11He's been rough on everybody but the three one pitch is hit to left field Willie Horton drips back and makes the catch.
- 1:02:20The ball was hit well but to the opposite field and they're two away.
- 1:02:27That brings up Roy White.
- 1:02:34White was hit with a pitch his first time up. Coleman was ahead of him 0 and 2 and then tried to waste one and hit Roy right in the middle of the back.
- 1:02:44Next time up Roy hit a hot shot right back to the mound.
- 1:02:47That pitch is low ball one.
- 1:02:51To the Mets are getting in the home run act now.
- 1:02:52Wayne Gard has hit his first of the year.
- 1:02:54Came with a man on to make that ball game six to two St. Louis in the fifth inning.
- 1:02:58Okay.
- 1:03:04On the inside corner one on one.
- 1:03:06Two out nobody on.
- 1:03:15On this pitch Paul Lorp Roy couldn't that hurt.
- 1:03:17Oh he's on the ground turning over twice that hit him solidly.
- 1:03:21And was going forward when it hit him and kicked all the way back to the screen.
- 1:03:25Monahan the Yankee trainer and that hurt.
- 1:03:32Fortunately it got part of the spike shoe and not the ankle bone solidly.
- 1:03:37I don't think Roy would be able to continue.
- 1:03:40I thought for a minute it might have got his instep but it didn't.
- 1:03:42It was on the side of the foot.
- 1:03:44I was going to walk it off.
- 1:03:47Roy wants to stay in there.
- 1:03:59Roy has a count of one ball two strikes on him.
- 1:04:01Two out nobody on.
- 1:04:02Tigers in front one nothing top of the sixth.
- 1:04:06Joe Coleman hands over the head.
- 1:04:10Five ball that will be out of play and up on the roof here at Tiger Stadium.
- 1:04:19This is Roy's 351st consecutive ball game for the Yankees.
- 1:04:26He's very durable.
- 1:04:34The kind usually the fellows that get hurt the most are the big husky strong fellows with a lot of muscle.
- 1:04:42More of a chance to pull one.
- 1:04:44Again the one two look out he hit him in the same spot a little lower this time.
- 1:04:48Holding his backside this time.
- 1:04:50Got a little more meat there and it doesn't hurt as much Frank but that's twice he's been hit with a pitch.
- 1:04:55And both times he was behind on the count.
- 1:04:58First time 0-2 this time 1-2.
- 1:05:00Roy has an amazing odd base percentage.
- 1:05:02He came into this game he's been on base better than half the times he's come to bat.
- 1:05:06And now he's been on base twice the hard way hit by the pitch today.
- 1:05:10Roy was hit with the pitch twice and then fouled one off his foot so he's going to be aching all over.
- 1:05:15And that's a tip in that whirlpool tomorrow over in Cleveland.
- 1:05:19Mike Egan has hit in on a double play and struck out.
- 1:05:22Left hand batter.
- 1:05:23Swings and misses strike one.
- 1:05:26On deck Berman Munson.
- 1:05:28Hager's lead 1-0.
- 1:05:37Cash holds the bag against Roy White.
- 1:05:40And they almost picked him off.
- 1:05:42Man they had Roy leaning short second he had taken one step.
- 1:05:46And only his quick reflexes enabled him to dive back head first.
- 1:05:53Roy looked like Bill Burton on the draw to try and steal the bag.
- 1:05:59See what happens here.
- 1:06:00Stretched by Coleman.
- 1:06:03Another throw to first this time Roy is back easily.
- 1:06:09Nothing in one to count.
- 1:06:14Stretched by Coleman.
- 1:06:17And the pitch swing and a miss.
- 1:06:18One after a low breaking pitch that time 0-2.
- 1:06:23Plus the right field seats here are very inviting for left hand batters.
- 1:06:26A lot of times you take your eye off the ball thinking it's so easy to hit one out there.
- 1:06:31With a pitcher like Coleman it's easy to do.
- 1:06:37Nothing in two to count.
- 1:06:39There goes Roy White.
- 1:06:40The pitch out they figured the throw is low and not in time and White steals the bag.
- 1:06:45And started for third and then thought better of it.
- 1:06:48He would have made it easily as Stanley and Sutherland had a little Alphonse Gasconak who's going to pick it up.
- 1:06:54But Roy steals the bag even though they had called for a pitch out.
- 1:06:58And would have had Roy by about 10 feet but Priam's throw bounced about five feet in front of Bregman.
- 1:07:03That's the first poor throw Priam has made.
- 1:07:05He worked very hard on his throwing this spring.
- 1:07:08And his arm was a bit suspect I am told.
- 1:07:11But he made a couple of perfect throws in the opening game here of the series Tuesday.
- 1:07:16And he did so the Yankees get a break.
- 1:07:19And let's see Roy White picks up his first stolen base of the year in his second attempt.
- 1:07:28And he strikes them out.
- 1:07:30So the Yankees had a chance there but for the second time Coleman strikes out Hegan for his fourth strike.
- 1:07:36Strike out of the game.
- 1:07:37No runs, no hits, no errors, a man left.
- 1:07:42And in the middle of the sixth inning it's the Tigers won the Yankees nothing.
- 1:07:47D.D. is for everybody not just whoever. Anyone can share D.D. with someone nice as you.
- 1:08:12D.D. is for everybody. Darling have no doubt that anyone can get D.D.
- 1:08:31That's what it's all about.
- 1:08:36If you're curious or confused get information or a pamphlet at most pharmacies or a health clinic.
- 1:08:42If you need help see a doctor. A public service message by this station and the American Social Health Association.
- 1:08:52Well the Yankee Stadium ticket office will be open for another three hours this afternoon.
- 1:08:56It's open every day until 6 and on Saturdays and Sundays until 5 o'clock.
- 1:09:03So plenty of time to get your tickets for the Boston Red Sox series.
- 1:09:07Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. All afternoon games starting at 2 o'clock next week.
- 1:09:12The Yankees and the Red Sox. Quite a series still.
- 1:09:15All right Frank the top of the order. Brinkman Rodriguez in north up against Stoudelmeyer.
- 1:09:19Brinkman bounces one foul outside of third.
- 1:09:22Eddie has hit the ball hard off Stoudelmeyer.
- 1:09:24Fired hard to Mercer in center field the first inning. Line to Willie Horton in the third.
- 1:09:33Go through six innings. Joe Coleman has not allowed a hit to the Yankees.
- 1:09:42He's hit Roy White twice and given a walk.
- 1:09:49All right Mel hands over the head. Side on pitch inside one of one.
- 1:10:08Mel gets the sign from Munson.
- 1:10:12Pitch is low ball two two of one.
- 1:10:18So do the Tigers have seven hits but only one run.
- 1:10:21Some bad base running has taken them out of a couple of innings.
- 1:10:28The 2-1 delivery is bounced to third. Nettles has it on the second hop.
- 1:10:32Fires to first and Brinkman is retired.
- 1:10:35So Brinkman hits the ball hard again but right at Nettles.
- 1:10:38One away and here's Rodriguez who has driven in the only run of the game.
- 1:10:42Line to right in the first and single at center in the third.
- 1:10:45Then on the throw to the plate where Sutherland scored Munson threw them out as he tried to go to second.
- 1:10:55One out nobody on. Tigers in front one nothing.
- 1:11:02Side on my pitch bounced to third again. Nettles up with it.
- 1:11:06Fires to Hagan and there are two out.
- 1:11:09He hit that ball right off the end of his bat. Wasn't hit hard.
- 1:11:13And now Jim Northrop who is bounced to short and fly to center.
- 1:11:25Told you the way this ball game is going Tigers will make their playing easily.
- 1:11:30Yankees have a charter and don't have to hurry but it's been an up and down game.
- 1:11:36There's a bounce to hit slowly to first. Hagan will have to flip the start of my.
- 1:11:40He does and they got him easy inning to Mel.
- 1:11:43Three up and three down and at the end of six full innings.
- 1:11:47It's the Tigers won the Yankees nothing and Frank Messer will carry you along for the last three.
- 1:11:57If you own a business that uses trucks you paid to have those signs painted on them.
- 1:12:01If the signs are dirty no one can read them.

- 1:12:41Thanks for picking us. WQBK. QBK keeps you company AM and FM.
- 1:12:54Well we moved right along.
- 1:13:10In our ballgame with the 7th inning, Berman Munson will try to get something started for the Yankees
- 1:13:15who have been unable to touch Joe Coleman so far.
- 1:13:19Against Munson, the right-hander, the infield shades slightly around toward third.
- 1:13:29Berman is grounded out to first base and flies to center.
- 1:13:32Swings to the first pitch, ground ball to third.
- 1:13:34Flag down there by Rodriguez.
- 1:13:35Fires the cross in time and on one pitch, Munson grounds out to the third baseman of Raleigh, O'Rodriguez.
- 1:13:44It will bring up Bobby Mercer. Bobby is over two and hasn't had the ball off the infield.
- 1:13:49Roddy Bloomberg comes out on deck.
- 1:13:59Mercer is grounded out to second and to the pitcher.
- 1:14:16First pitch is in low, ball one.
- 1:14:18Sam McDowell throwing down the Yankee bullpen.
- 1:14:25Coleman has his side, right-hander deals up high.
- 1:14:32What is it Bill Wright that Coleman has been drawing a staffer and keeps that ball on the ground?
- 1:14:35Forkball I guess.
- 1:14:37He picked up a forkball a couple of years ago and he's given the Yankees a good with it over the last couple of years.
- 1:14:43Especially Munson.
- 1:14:46He comes up high to Bobby and the count goes to three balls and no strikes.
- 1:14:50Coleman has walked only one man. He's hit two batters. Well he's hit one batter twice.
- 1:14:55Roy White in the first inning, again the sixth.
- 1:14:59And gave a walk to Bloomberg, Ronnie's first time up.
- 1:15:02He's behind three and O to Mercer.
- 1:15:05Bobby has glanced out at Dick Hauser and he takes ball four high and outside.
- 1:15:09Mercer is on.
- 1:15:12Well the Yankees have their fourth baserunner.
- 1:15:18In the first inning after White was hit by a pitch, Higgin grabbed it into a double play.
- 1:15:22Bloomberg was stranded in the second after walking.
- 1:15:26And Roy White was stranded at second base in the sixth inning after being hit and stealing second.
- 1:15:34Mercer has been running this year. We'll keep an eye on him for you.
- 1:15:36Cash has got to hold him on. Bobby takes a long lead over at first base.
- 1:15:40Coleman's pitch to Bloomberg, cut out and bounce foul.
- 1:15:43Flag down by Coach Ellie Howard at first base.
- 1:15:47Bloomberg after walking in the second popped up in the fifth.
- 1:15:52The Yankees have had only two balls off the infield.
- 1:15:56Munson's fly ball to center and Mason's fly ball to left field.
- 1:16:04Greg Nettles on deck. Tigers are leading by a score of one to nothing here in the top of the seventh inning.
- 1:16:10Mercer at first, one out. Coleman comes out of the bounce, spins, throws to first, safe.
- 1:16:22They play Bloomberg to pull on the infield, the outfield straight away.
- 1:16:25The pitch is hit in the outer left field. Horton is right there, headed right to him, waiting.
- 1:16:30Comes in a step and makes the catch.
- 1:16:33Mercer tagged up and stays at first base.
- 1:16:36Two down and out Greg Nettles.
- 1:16:40Nettles is popped up in foul ground to the second baseman Sutherland.
- 1:16:45Sutherland went a long way down the right field line for him.
- 1:16:50Then Greg bounced out to the second baseman Sutherland.
- 1:16:56Arreale Rodriguez comes into the grass very wide at third base.
- 1:17:00Brinkman well over toward second. Sutherland in the hole.
- 1:17:03Cash holding Mercer on the outfield, punches toward center, getting Nettles both by a line.
- 1:17:08Throw to first, safe.
- 1:17:13So was it. I told you the sun came out for just about one minute.
- 1:17:16Now it's back under the clouds.
- 1:17:18But the rain has stopped. Quick throw to first, safe again. Mercer back in standing.
- 1:17:29Bill Sudeikis in the on deck circle.
- 1:17:33Coleman comes to the belt, holds the set, throws to first again, Mercer is back.
- 1:17:42Come by Joe Brinkman, no relationship to Eddie, the shortstop, watching the players at first.
- 1:17:54And the pitch, taken outside, off speed pitch that time.
- 1:18:09Mercer walks off of three, now four step lead at first base.
- 1:18:14Coleman spins and throws over there and Bobby is back.
- 1:18:18Coleman's got that little block move at first base.
- 1:18:20He breaks his left knee and looks like he's coming home and then he twirls, spins quickly and throws to first.
- 1:18:27There goes Mercer, the pitch is cut on, bounces slowly back to the mound.
- 1:18:30Coleman has it, throws to first base, Nettles is out and throws to side.
- 1:18:35Nettles did not want to swing at that one, it was a half swing.
- 1:18:39But he made contact and bounces out to the pitcher.
- 1:18:41The Yankees no runs, no hits, no errors, and the man left.
- 1:18:45At the end of the top of the seventh inning, it's Detroit 1 and New York nothing.
- 1:18:49This is it.
- 1:18:54The sun can be brutal here, so close to the Sahara.
- 1:18:58Smoldering 103 degrees on the parts village of Terra in Niger, Africa.
- 1:19:03Behind one mud hut, a village of scrapes and greens from the earth.
- 1:19:07And nearby, another pounds millet grains and the powder.
- 1:19:11Down the road, a child cries.
- 1:19:14Good health doesn't come easy here.
- 1:19:16That's what brought Nancy Reardon to Terra.
- 1:19:18She's a Peace Corps volunteer, sharing her knowledge of health and nutrition with the people here.
- 1:19:24They need her knowledge.
- 1:19:26Four out of eight children never make it past their fifth birthday.
- 1:19:31Young people like Nancy, serving far away from home in the Peace Corps,
- 1:19:35and her fellow volunteers and VISTAs, serving across this country, are all a part of action.
- 1:19:42To find out how you can become a volunteer, write action.
- 1:19:46Washington, D.C., 20525.
- 1:19:55Polly Ankins will be back home Tuesday afternoon to play the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:19:59They'll play the Red Sox three afternoon games, all starting at 2 o'clock.
- 1:20:02Tuesday afternoon, April 16th, Wednesday the 17th, and Thursday the 18th.
- 1:20:08Chance to see Carl Yastrinsky and the rest of the Red Sox.
- 1:20:12Okay, Bill, Al Kailine, one for two, leads off the seventh inning.
- 1:20:19Kailine single to left field in the second, then was forced to second base.
- 1:20:24After Mason dropped Willie Horton's line drive, he picked it up and forced Kailine.
- 1:20:30Kailine drafted out the third base in the fourth.
- 1:20:33The pitch is long away, ball one.
- 1:20:36Looks like Al Kailine, another one of those players with a designated hitter rule,
- 1:20:40just to run it on, Bill, as long as he wants to.
- 1:20:42Well, Ralph Houch says he doesn't need a glove this year.
- 1:20:44He's not going to put him in the outfield.
- 1:20:46He takes this one, Long, outside, two balls and no strikes.
- 1:20:49I guess with that kid Ron Cash hitting the way he's hitting, he won't use the first base either.
- 1:20:57Ron Cash trying to take the job away from Norm Cash.
- 1:21:02Here's the 2-0 delivery.
- 1:21:04Up high, ball three to Kailine.
- 1:21:07Ron and Norm are not related. Now, Tigers wear their names on the uniforms.
- 1:21:11Ron Cash has R, Cash on the back of his, but Norm Cash has just Cash.
- 1:21:17He wouldn't let him put the N on.
- 1:21:19If people don't know me now, they never will.
- 1:21:21There's a strike to Kailine. It's three and one.
- 1:21:25He's right. He's been around here about 15 years.
- 1:21:31Please, that.
- 1:21:33There's the windup. Three-one pitch.
- 1:21:35Ryan Dry at the center. That's going to be a base hit.
- 1:21:38Bobby Merchant plays it on two hops.
- 1:21:40And Kailine is on with his second base hit of this ballgame.
- 1:21:45Stottlemeyer got him in on the fifth.
- 1:21:48That was a handle hit right out of the second base.
- 1:21:52It brings up Willie Horton.
- 1:21:54Certainly one of the strongest men in baseball.
- 1:22:01Frank, did you get the lead score?
- 1:22:04The fifth inning complete down?
- 1:22:06Right. It's after five. Cardinals are bad at the top of the sixth.
- 1:22:09And the Cardinals lead the match by a score of six to two.
- 1:22:13It's been four home runs in that ballgame, I know.
- 1:22:15Lou Brock, Joe Torey, Ken Reach for the Cardinals, and Wayne Garret for the Mets.
- 1:22:21Horton has gone one for two, had a double his last time up,
- 1:22:26and was thrown outside to stretch it into a triple.
- 1:22:29Bloomberg fired perfectly to Michael, and Michael's relay to Nettles was right on the money.
- 1:22:35Throw to first, Kailine is back.
- 1:22:38First time up, Horton batted with Kailine at first.
- 1:22:41Hit the line drive, Mason had it in his glove, tried to throw the ball, I think, before he caught it, dropped it,
- 1:22:48but still recovered it in time to get the fourth play at second.
- 1:22:55Now the one-all pitch, down low, ball one.
- 1:23:00Here's a score in the American League.
- 1:23:02Baltimore and Boston, those four after an inning and a half, that ballgame being played in Boston.
- 1:23:07And Chicago, the White Sox won, the Minnesota Twins nothing after one and a half.
- 1:23:11The Twins batting in the bottom of the second.
- 1:23:13The White Sox having a lot of trouble this year, I guess they are.
- 1:23:20Now the one-all pitch, a strike call, one and one, to Horton, looks like a slider from Stuttelmeyer.
- 1:23:29Mr. Sunshine may not be beaming quite as much as usual, Chuck Gunner.
- 1:23:36This man seems to have a perpetual smile on his face.
- 1:23:39Yep, never seems to worry about a thing.
- 1:23:41That's the orthodox managing, and he's gotten away with it for two years, though.
- 1:23:47One ball, one strike to Horton, Kaleid at first, nobody out, here's the pitch.
- 1:23:51Change up is hit in the air to left field.
- 1:23:54Moving over forward is Mercer, well over in left.
- 1:23:56Mercer is under it and makes the catch, and Kaleid makes him throw and now dashes back to first base.
- 1:24:03Bobby Mercer went way over to the left field.
- 1:24:05Of course they play Horton to full way around anyway.
- 1:24:09One out, and the batter will be Norm Cash, two for two.
- 1:24:17Cash had a base hit under Michael's glove at second base his first time up,
- 1:24:20then doubled the right field at the full one just inside the line.
- 1:24:35And the pitch to it, on the outside corner, strike one.
- 1:24:39Sam McDowell continues to throw on the Yankee bullpen, getting his work in,
- 1:24:43and a left-hander, Luke Walker, is pitching down on the Detroit Tiger bullpen.
- 1:24:52Nettles very wide of the line on Cash and in close.
- 1:24:55The infield plays in the full.
- 1:24:56The pitch is hit off the end of the bat into the Tiger dugout.
- 1:25:05No ball to strike out on Cash.
- 1:25:13Dottelmeyer walks off the reverse club of the mound.
- 1:25:16Tigers are leading one and nothing.
- 1:25:19Yankees have not had a base hit off Joe Coleman through their first seven times at bat.
- 1:25:27Dottelmeyer has the sign from Munson.
- 1:25:29Comes out of the bow, the right-hander turns it loose.
- 1:25:31Cash hits a drive toward right center.
- 1:25:33Mercer is after it, and Bobby's got it at the edge of the warning track
- 1:25:36in front of the 370 marker.
- 1:25:39Throws back in and again, K-line ducks back to first base.
- 1:25:43That ball got out there in a hurry.
- 1:25:45Mercer had to get a good jump on it, and he did.
- 1:25:48Two down, and now Mickey Stanley, the Tiger center fielder.
- 1:25:52Stanley has grabbed it into a double play and single the right field.
- 1:26:00The Red Sox picked up two runs in the bottom half of the second inning,
- 1:26:03and they lead Baltimore 2-0 after two.
- 1:26:08That's Jim Blomberg for Baltimore and Lewis Piot for Boston this afternoon.
- 1:26:13The Red Sox have been off four days.
- 1:26:15They've played Friday and Saturday, and they haven't played since
- 1:26:18because of bad weather in New England.
- 1:26:23Dottelmeyer ready to work to Stanley,
- 1:26:26and the first pitch cut on and grounded foul, got it in on his hands,
- 1:26:29and he pulled his foul over toward the third base dugout.
- 1:26:40The Tigers go into Boston following this game,
- 1:26:43and I think he's going to Cleveland.
- 1:26:45He'll be playing tomorrow night over in Cleveland.
- 1:26:49He'll ask for a zudo to check out his ski wear again.
- 1:26:54Go on, go on, hit.
- 1:26:56It's deep to the field, wide is back to the seat.
- 1:26:59Can he get it? He leaps, he can on, a home run.
- 1:27:02A home run for Mickey Stanley, scoring K-line ahead of him,
- 1:27:06and the Tigers lead 3-0.
- 1:27:13No got that ball up a little. He didn't want that breaking ball that high.
- 1:27:17Stanley, a pretty good fastball hitter, jumping on a hanging breaking ball
- 1:27:23and just getting it out of reach to Roy White.
- 1:27:25White out there trying to climb the fence for the ball.
- 1:27:27It just made the first throw on left field.
- 1:27:34He gave it all he had. He went up on the fence,
- 1:27:36grabbed hold of the top of the fence, pulled himself up,
- 1:27:38and still could not reach it.
- 1:27:41I have seen White go up that fence out there and make a catch,
- 1:27:45but that one was too high for him.
- 1:27:47Stanley's second home run of the year, the Tigers lead 3-0,
- 1:27:51and now Bill Frihan steps in. He's 0 for 2.
- 1:27:55Sattelmeyer winds and deals, low.
- 1:27:58Frihan ground it out to Higa at first, his first time up.
- 1:28:02That hit into a very unorthodox double play.
- 1:28:05With runners at first and third, he had a ground ball to third.
- 1:28:08Nettles fielded the ball.
- 1:28:10Checked Cash back toward the bag. Cash did not break for the plate.
- 1:28:13Nettles threw the second base to get Stanley out of fourth,
- 1:28:16and then Michael threw home to cut Cash down at the plate
- 1:28:19to complete the double play.
- 1:28:22Fitches down, low ball to Frihan. Two balls and no throw.
- 1:28:30Two outs and nobody on.
- 1:28:32The wind up by Sattelmeyer and the pitch. Cut on, ground ball to third foul.
- 1:28:40The Twins picked up two runs in the bottom of the second,
- 1:28:43and they now lead the Chicago White Sox 2-1 after two.
- 1:28:47The Mets must be doing something.
- 1:28:49Proposky pitching for the Cardinals in the seventh,
- 1:28:54so the Mets have gotten rid of Gibson.
- 1:28:58It's like the Twins saving all their wins for the season.
- 1:29:01They hardly won a ball game in exhibition play,
- 1:29:04but now they are 3-1 going into the day and leading in their ball game.
- 1:29:07Alright, Sattelmeyer with a 2-1 pitch to Frihan.
- 1:29:11Has the plate but high. Ball three, 3-1.
- 1:29:23We're in the bottom half of the seventh.
- 1:29:25Two outs, none on. Detroit leading 3-0.
- 1:29:27Sattelmeyer brings it. Frihan takes it, low ball for.
- 1:29:35That's the first walk by Sattelmeyer.
- 1:29:37This is the New York Yankee Baseball Network.
- 1:29:39We pause for station identification.
- 1:29:45WQBK AM and FM Winsler. Hi, I'm Jack Hocky.
- 1:29:48I'll be here after the game's over. Win or lose, go Yanks.
- 1:29:54Gary Sattelman does the batter.
- 1:30:00He takes a pitch low and outside, ball one.
- 1:30:04Sattelman doubled his first time up to give him five consecutive base hits in the series.
- 1:30:08Yankees finally got him in the fifth when he flied out to center field.
- 1:30:15Tom Buskey is up on the Yankee bullpen now, right-hander.
- 1:30:21Egan is not holding. Frihan on. Throw over there anyway.
- 1:30:25Egan behind the base runner. Took the throw wide at the back.
- 1:30:41Sattelmeyer checks Munson for the sign. Short stretch and the pitch.
- 1:30:45Fly and drive foul outside of first. Down into the Yankee bullpen.
- 1:31:04Sattelman feet very close together. Rookie on this ball club.
- 1:31:15It's a fly ball to right center. It's in there for the base hit.
- 1:31:18Frihan on his way to third. Mercer's throw will be cut off by Mason.
- 1:31:23And the Tigers have runners at first and third.
- 1:31:28Sattelman is not a rookie in baseball, but he is to this ball club.
- 1:31:32He's in with the Phillies and Montreal.
- 1:31:38Better say newcomer rather than rookie on the ball club.
- 1:31:41Newcomers this ball club.
- 1:31:44Runners at first and third. Munson goes out to talk to Sattelmeyer.
- 1:31:57And now to play down by her. Larry McCoy goes out to break up the conversation.
- 1:32:01Runners at first and third.
- 1:32:05Here comes Bill Verdon. That might be all for Sattelmeyer.
- 1:32:08He's got Tom Buskey, a right-hander, getting loose in the bullpen and right field.
- 1:32:12Mel was giving up three runs on ten hits and they have runners at first and third.
- 1:32:16And I think one of the things Verdon looked at, Frank, after reading the papers
- 1:32:21and finding out what he said about the fly when he took Steve out, he said Steve was throwing well in the opening here.
- 1:32:26He was just getting his pitches high. And Sattelmeyer got the high breaking ball to Stanley,
- 1:32:31who promptly hit it into the left field seat to score two runs.
- 1:32:34And that might be the criterion that Verdon uses watching his pitches along with the whitey four.
- 1:32:40Both of them standing over here together. And that's going to be all for Sattelmeyer.
- 1:32:44Tom Buskey will come in to relieve Mel Sattelmeyer here in the seventh.
- 1:32:49Tigers will have runners at first and third and two outs.
- 1:32:56Buskey making the long walk from the Yankee bullpen out in right field.
- 1:33:03Big right-hander from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Had a great spring.
- 1:33:09And so far this year he's picked up a save.
- 1:33:16And he's in that inning that he picked up that save. He walked one and struck out one.
- 1:33:23So Tom Buskey relieves Mel Sattelmeyer.
- 1:33:31Buskey, Buskey, the winner of the Dawson Award, has the best rookie in the Yankee camp this spring.
- 1:33:39Big fella.
- 1:33:48Let's see, Buskey 6'3", weighs 220 pounds from Harrisburg.
- 1:33:52Last year, he spent the year with the Yankees and Syracuse.
- 1:33:57Fact, Frank, as I remember, this is the place they brought the fit,
- 1:34:00made his first pitching appearance with the Yankees right here at Tiger Stadium.
- 1:34:03It certainly was, and he looked very impressive.
- 1:34:06Buskey with a good fastball, and evidently he's added a good shaker to go with that.
- 1:34:11Ball goes down well, and he pitched well his last time out.
- 1:34:14He'll have to deal with Eddie Frankman here with runners at first and third, and two outs to the seventh.
- 1:34:21While we're waiting on Buskey, let's look at the scoreboard again.
- 1:34:23It's Minnesota 2, Chicago 1 after 2.
- 1:34:26Cleveland 5, Milwaukee 2 after 2.
- 1:34:29And the Red Sox 2, Baltimore nothing after 2.
- 1:34:33Over the National League after 6, the Cardinals 6, the Mets 2.
- 1:34:37And after 1, Philadelphia and the Chicago Cubs, no score.
- 1:34:41All right, Frank.
- 1:34:42Eddie Frankman, ready to set Buskey.
- 1:34:45Frankman has got over three in this ballgame.
- 1:34:48He's up with runners at first and third, and two outs.
- 1:34:50The Tigers leading 3-0.
- 1:34:52And Ken Wright is throwing now in the Yankee ballpark.
- 1:34:55The set by Buskey, the kick and the pitch from the right hander is looked out at the right field.
- 1:34:59That's going to be a base hit.
- 1:35:00Here comes three out in the score.
- 1:35:02And Bloomberg fires on to our third base.
- 1:35:10Southerland stopped his second, and Brinkman wasted no time.
- 1:35:13He jumped on the first pitch and looked it out at the right to drive in run number 4.
- 1:35:18The run is charged to Southermire.
- 1:35:23And now Southerland is second, Brinkman is first.
- 1:35:25The batter will be Aurelio Rodriguez.
- 1:35:35Rodriguez is one for three.
- 1:35:37Fly to right, single to center, and granted out to third.
- 1:35:44Right hand hitter, Buskey.
- 1:35:46Kicks and deals. Blowing away, ball one.
- 1:36:01Buskey hides the ball behind the right hip.
- 1:36:04Brings his hands together and fires.
- 1:36:06Flodder is fouled back.
- 1:36:07Breaking pitch.
- 1:36:13Brinkman is first and Southerland is second, two out.
- 1:36:22Lights have been on the entire afternoon here at Tigers Stadium.
- 1:36:26A very dark, cloudy day with some rain earlier in the ball game.
- 1:36:36One long pitch to Rodriguez. Blowing away, two and one.
- 1:36:47Tigers got a run on the third, got a double by Southerland and a single by Rodriguez.
- 1:36:57And they've scored three runs here in the seventh.
- 1:37:03Down low and it's ball three, three and one.
- 1:37:07Keyline open for the single to center with two-man out, Stanley Homer.
- 1:37:12Freehand walk, went to third on Southerland's basis and scored on Brinkman's single.
- 1:37:25Buskey has the side, checks the runner at second and fires.
- 1:37:29Pitch is hit in the air to shallow right. Bloomberg calling for it.
- 1:37:33Bloddy is under it.
- 1:37:34Bloddy bakes the catch, the side is retired.
- 1:37:37But the Tigers bat eight men and they score three runs on four hits.
- 1:37:41There were no Yankee errors and two men are left.
- 1:37:43So at the end of seven the score is Detroit four and New York nothing.
- 1:37:48Having work done on your car costs money, usually more than you'd like to spend.
- 1:37:52Well, it's getting late for the Yankees.
- 1:38:01They have no runs and no hits against Joe Colman.
- 1:38:05We're in the eighth inning.
- 1:38:07Here's Joe Sudeikis and here's Frank Lester.
- 1:38:09And Colman struck Sudeikis out both times, he faced him.
- 1:38:13Sudeikis switch under batting left and the first six to iron.
- 1:38:16Low and inside, almost hit him in the leg, ball one.
- 1:38:22And now Sudeikis wants the baseball examined.
- 1:38:24Colman flips it in to Larry McCoy.
- 1:38:28And McCoy gives it back to the pitcher.
- 1:38:34The Tigers have four runs on 11 hits.
- 1:38:36The Yankees no runs, no hits.
- 1:38:39Wind up by Colman and his six.
- 1:38:41Ta-da, hit in the air to center field.
- 1:38:43Stanley drifting to his right.
- 1:38:45The Yankees under it and Stanley has it.
- 1:38:49Sudeikis is retired, one out and Gene Michael will step in.
- 1:38:54Twice Michael is crowded out to the first baseman Norm Cash on a 50.
- 1:39:07Rodriguez comes in on the grass to third base, wide at the line.
- 1:39:10Brinklin goes over towards second.
- 1:39:12Colman straight away at the middle and the pitch in there for a call strike.
- 1:39:19Horace Clark has come out on deck to bat for Jim Mason.
- 1:39:24The wind up by Colman, the pitch.
- 1:39:26Michael takes the ball just inside, one and one.
- 1:39:34Tigers leading at four nothing.
- 1:39:36Bases empty, one out.
- 1:39:38The wind up by Colman, the pitch.
- 1:39:40Swing, foul, fifth, strike two.
- 1:39:48Top field plays Michael fairly shallow, especially Stanley in center field.
- 1:39:54He's way in.
- 1:39:56Now the wind up, one, two, pitch.
- 1:39:59A bit high and the count evens two balls, two strikes.
- 1:40:05Top half of the eighth inning, the Yankees looking for their first base hit of the ballgame.
- 1:40:12Yankees have won their first four games, trailing in this one four nothing.
- 1:40:15There's the wind.
- 1:40:16Here comes the pitch, high with a fastball.
- 1:40:19Three and two to Michael.
- 1:40:31Colman checks free inside and the payoff pitch hits up the middle base hit.
- 1:40:41One hopper past Sebelin to second base but Michael breaks the spell with the Yankees first base hit of the ballgame and a solid shot right back up the middle.
- 1:40:53Law runner at first, one out and Horace Clark will bat for Jim Mason. Clark, a switch hitter, will be batting lefty.
- 1:41:09It's Colman's first time at bat this year.
- 1:41:12Yes it is.
- 1:41:14Pitch going as high, ball one. He's scored a run but he hasn't been to bat.
- 1:41:17Got in as a pitch runner.
- 1:41:21Michael gets Cleveland in one of the games in New York.
- 1:41:26Michael takes the big lead at first. Cash is playing behind the base runner.
- 1:41:29Here's the pitch to Clark on the outside corner for a strike, one and one.
- 1:41:37Ralph House taking no chances as John Hiller warming up now to the Detroit Bulls, out of the field.
- 1:41:43The pitch, down low.
- 1:41:48Two balls and one strike.
- 1:41:51A couple of years ago Clark himself broke up three no hitters late in the ballgame.
- 1:42:00Seemed like one of them was here.
- 1:42:05Alright, the two ball one strike pitch. Get right back to Colman. He has it.
- 1:42:09Fins throws to second for one, back to first. It's a double play going one six three.
- 1:42:15A one six three double play to retire the side.
- 1:42:19For the Yankees no runs, their first base hit of the ballgame.
- 1:42:23No errors, nobody left. And at the end of the top of the eighth inning it's Detroit four and New York nothing.
- 1:42:28Yes, a lot of games think I'm the kind of guy who love them and leave them. Well it ain't true, see.
- 1:42:34I'm still in love with my first love. I met her in the Spokies in Jersey.
- 1:42:38Now don't knock it. Some of those Spokies, these were something to see, see.
- 1:42:41My first love was sitting at the bar. The most beautiful schooner of beer I ever saw, see.
- 1:42:45It was draft beer. Fresh, smooth, creamy. The kind of beer you probably first loved when you were a punk.
- 1:42:51Well I kept on loving draft beer ever since. So I never had no time for games, see.
- 1:42:56And later when I found out I could get my first love out of a can of Peel's Real Grap, I was happy.
- 1:43:01Look, if you want a beer you can fall in love with, try Peel's Real Grap.
- 1:43:07It's just as fresh and smooth and creamy as the kind over in Jersey was.
- 1:43:11And if you Peel brothers know what's good for you, you'll keep on making Peel's Real Grap, see.
- 1:43:18Peel's Real Grap, the kind of beer you first loved.
- 1:43:27Peel Brothers, Willamance at Massachusetts.
- 1:43:32Horace Clark, who pinch hit for Jim Mason, will stay in the ball game. He'll play second for the Yankees.
- 1:43:38And moving from second base to shortstop, Gene Michael, or the defensive change, Clark at second.
- 1:43:45And Michael moving from second to short. Here's Frank.
- 1:43:48And Jim Northrup, the only man who did not bat in the Tigers' seventh, leaves off the eighth.
- 1:43:53Northrup is 0-3, left hand hitter.
- 1:44:02John Buskey, ready to work, here's the pitch.
- 1:44:05Outside ball one.
- 1:44:08They call Northrup the Gray Fox, because of his almost completely gray hair, very prematurely gray.
- 1:44:171-0 delivery. No, got the corner. At the knees, 1-1.
- 1:44:26Tigers, four runs, 11 hits. The Yankees, no runs and one hit. Gene Michael, single.
- 1:44:32In the top half of the inning, first time they broke through on Coleman.
- 1:44:35Buskey turns it loose, and it's popped up foul outside of third.
- 1:44:39Nettles gives chase. He will not have a play. The ball is back in the seats.
- 1:44:44Alstottelmeyer worked six and two-thirds innings, charged with four runs all-around.
- 1:44:48He allowed ten base hits, walked one and struck out nobody.
- 1:44:52Buskey has given up one base hit since relieving in the bottom half of the seventh.
- 1:45:05Buskey steps back off the rubber. Looks down again for a sign.
- 1:45:11And the 1-2 pitch to Northrup. Upside, two balls and two strikes.
- 1:45:19In the ninth inning, the Yankees will have the top of the batting water coming up, White, Hegan, and Munson.
- 1:45:30There's ball three upstairs, full count, three and two.
- 1:45:36White, Hegan, Munson, and Yankee fans will be hoping Mercer, Bloomberg, Nettles, Sudeikis.
- 1:45:50Buskey with a 3-2 pitch to Northrup. Foul, straight back.
- 1:46:05Red Sox lead Baltimore 3-0 at the end of three.
- 1:46:09Twins lead the White Sox 2-1 at the end of two.
- 1:46:13And it's Cleveland 5-0 walking through in the third.
- 1:46:16There's a high-fly ball, shadow left, White coming, Michael going.
- 1:46:20Who's it going to be? It's Michael, the shortstop, who takes it in shadow left.
- 1:46:25Northrup is retired, one down.
- 1:46:32And now Al Kaelin. Kaelin is two for three.
- 1:46:36He started off a three-run seventh inning with a single to center field.
- 1:46:52First pitch to Kaelin, last ball for a strike.
- 1:46:58Tuesday Yankee pitching kept the top four Tiger batters from getting a base hit.
- 1:47:03They were combined over 17, Breckman, Rodriguez, Northrup, and Kaelin.
- 1:47:09But this afternoon all but Northrup have come back with at least one base hit.
- 1:47:14Kaelin takes the ball, it's one and one to the right-hand hitter.
- 1:47:18Buskey rocks, kicks, and deals. Breaking pitch, popped up in a shadow right.
- 1:47:22This may be trouble. Hegan going back, he's under it now and makes the catch.
- 1:47:27Mike Hegan just turned his back on the infield, running as hard as he could.
- 1:47:31He adjusts where the ball was, turned at the right moment and pulled it in.
- 1:47:37Two outs, and Willie Horton the batter.
- 1:47:43Horton is one for three. He had a double in the fourth inning,
- 1:47:47but was thrown out by a stretcher into a triple.
- 1:47:49Bloomberg to Michael Renettos.
- 1:47:55Again this afternoon the Yankees have had fine defensive play,
- 1:47:59turned over two double plays in the ball game.
- 1:48:01Fitch to Horton on the inside corner, strike one.
- 1:48:04The elements picked up five runs in the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:48:07They now lead the Cardinals seven to six after seven.
- 1:48:13Whoo! Five runs. Well, it can be done.
- 1:48:17Cardinals used three pitchers that inning.
- 1:48:20What the Yankees need to do here in the ninth.
- 1:48:23Horton line drive, base hit to left field.
- 1:48:26Roy White down on one, he feels the ball.
- 1:48:29And Horton is on with his second base hit, giving him a two for four afternoon.
- 1:48:34Second hit off Busky at number 12 for Detroit.
- 1:48:39The batter will be Norm Cash. Hegan will not hold Horton on at first base.
- 1:48:44Cash is two for three, has a single and a double.
- 1:49:03Busky to the belt and turns it loose, strike one called.
- 1:49:20Cash has been with the Tigers since 1960, Bill, so that would be 15 years, wouldn't it?
- 1:49:24It's a fly ball to left center, Roy White is waiting for it.
- 1:49:28Under it, and White has it three times aside.
- 1:49:32When he tried in the eighth, no runs, the base hit, the man is left.
- 1:49:35At the end of eighth, the score, the Tigers four and the Yankees nothing.
- 1:49:40I don't know. I really can't say how many cigarettes I smoke in a day.
- 1:49:45Sometimes I don't even know I'm lighting one.
- 1:49:47I pick up the phone, I pick up a cigarette automatically.
- 1:49:50Sit down with the paper, light up a cigarette, wait for the bus, smoke a cigarette.
- 1:49:55The fact of the thing, I reach, I reach.
- 1:49:58Sometimes I have a cigarette just because I see someone else lighting up, even someone I'm just watching on television.
- 1:50:04It's ridiculous. I smoke most of them without even thinking.
- 1:50:08I bet if I really thought about all the cigarettes I smoke automatically, I probably wouldn't smoke them.
- 1:50:14Now if I didn't smoke them, I'd automatically cut down.
- 1:50:18What a good idea.
- 1:50:20Cutting down is always a good idea.
- 1:50:23The U.S. Public Health Service has more ways for smokers to help themselves.
- 1:50:28Send for them. They're free.
- 1:50:31Just mail a postcard with your name and address to Automatic Rockville, Maryland, 20852.
- 1:50:41That's the Yankees last chance Frank.
- 1:50:45Here they're down four nothing here.
- 1:50:47We go into the top of the ninth and the Yankees have the top of the batting order up.
- 1:50:51Roy White will try to get something started. Roy has been hit twice with a pitch.
- 1:50:55Another time up he hit back to the pitcher, Baldwin.
- 1:51:06Baldwin ready to work to Roy and the first pitch, taking high ball one.
- 1:51:11Think about the big winners in the American League over the past three years.
- 1:51:14You think of Catfish Hunter of Oakland, Jim Palmer in Baltimore, Wilbur Wood at Chicago,
- 1:51:20Mickey Lawlitch here at Detroit.
- 1:51:22White has a fly ball to deep right. This one is going. It's going to be out of here.
- 1:51:27In the upper deck hit one of the support posts in the upper deck.
- 1:51:32And Roy White has put the Yankees on the scoreboard.
- 1:51:35It got mixed up with those two times he got hit.
- 1:51:38At least the first person he makes up for it.
- 1:51:41Yankees still down by three though.
- 1:51:43That's only their second hit off Coleman.
- 1:51:45And that's Roy's first long run of the year.
- 1:51:51You think about those pitchers and well, Wilbur Wood with all the starts he gets
- 1:51:56is the winningest pitcher over the last three years. He's won 70.
- 1:52:01Pollard, Hunter, and Lawlitch have all won 63 games over the last three years.
- 1:52:12One's pitch to Higgins down low ball one.
- 1:52:16And Joe Coleman's name doesn't come up, but you know in the last three years Bill Coleman has won 62 ball games.
- 1:52:24One O'Dale, fastball for a strike to Higgins.
- 1:52:29Jim is over three.
- 1:52:31They're in the series of course reunited with his dad who is one of Ralph House coaches here in Detroit now.
- 1:52:36One long pitch to Mike.
- 1:52:38Swing on him, that's strike two.
- 1:52:40I think part of the reason he's won a lot of those games too is he's added that pork ball,
- 1:52:44which really does wonders for him.
- 1:52:46And he can handle left-handers well with it.
- 1:52:52Higgins wants time now. Let's see a ball got loose down in the Detroit bullpen where Hiller is warming up again.
- 1:53:00Thurman-Munson is on deck. It's 4-1 Detroit.
- 1:53:03Coleman deals and Higgins takes low.
- 1:53:07Nobody on, nobody out. Roy White lead off the ninth with a home run.
- 1:53:20Coleman has his side from Prianne and a 2-2 pitch.
- 1:53:23Swing and a missed strike three.
- 1:53:27That's the third time Coleman has struck Higgins out.
- 1:53:32His other two strikeouts have been Sudeikis for a total of five.
- 1:53:40One out, nobody out, and Thurman-Munson steps in.
- 1:53:43Thurman has grounded out the first, fly to center, and bounce to third.
- 1:53:52Bobby Mercer is on deck.
- 1:54:03First pitch, a strike called, looked like a slider.
- 1:54:13That's another big thing for Coleman too, Bill, is he's been backed by the Tigers, not the Senators, the last three years.
- 1:54:18A few more runs scored. Ground ball to third is foul.
- 1:54:22Of course he brought pretty good Enfield over here with him.
- 1:54:25He brought the left side of the Tiger Enfield, Rodriguez and Brinkman with him, and that's bound to help.
- 1:54:32He brought his defense with him and got a little more offense.
- 1:54:37But he is, he's certainly one of the better pitchers in the league.
- 1:54:410-2 delivery. Munson, it's a bouncer right back to Coleman.
- 1:54:44He's got your habit, flips it over to Cash at first base, Munson is out two down.
- 1:54:49What is Denny McLean doing?
- 1:54:53I heard he supposedly had a TV show around here someplace, he was trying to write a book.
- 1:54:58TV, radio show, talk show, some kind.
- 1:55:09He's probably at Maddox within that deal, Maddox and McLean, Coleman, Brinkman, Rodriguez.
- 1:55:19All right, two outs and nobody on. Bobby Mercer has walked once, crowded out twice.
- 1:55:23He's over two and looks at the strike.
- 1:55:25There again the fork ball from Joe Coleman, and he does throw a good one.
- 1:55:32The windup and the 0-1 pitch. Flat armor is ripped now down the right side.
- 1:55:39Bouncing into the Yankee bullpen.
- 1:55:52No balls and two strikes, two outs, the base is empty, Tigers leading 4-1 here in the ninth inning.
- 1:55:57Coleman rocks, kicks and delivers. Mercer swings, brown ball is hit to second.
- 1:56:02Settling it up with it, spins, throws to Cash, the ball game is over.
- 1:56:05And after winning their first four games, the Yankees are knocked out to satchet out.
- 1:56:10In the ninth inning, the Yankees score one run on one hit Roy White's homer.
- 1:56:14No errors and nobody left.
- 1:56:16Bill White will have the totals and the recap for you in a moment.
- 1:56:19The Yankees score, the Tigers four and the Yankees one.
- 1:56:28The Yankees are the Yankees.
- 1:56:51Smokey has been telling us to be careful with fire for over 30 years.
- 1:57:03Yet last year we still started over 100,000 careless forest fires.
- 1:57:08When will we ever learn?
- 1:57:18The Public Service on behalf of the Forest Service State Foresters and the Ad Council.
- 1:57:25Well here at Tiger Stadium was all Joe Coleman and the Tigers as the Tigers beat the Yankees by a score of 4-1.
- 1:57:34The Tigers got off in the third inning on a double by Gary Sutherland, his fifth straight hit against the Yankees this two game series.
- 1:57:42And Arrelo Rodriguez single to center to score Sutherland.
- 1:57:46And that's all the Tigers picked up in the third.
- 1:57:50They took a 1-0 lead and they added three more in the seventh kept by a two run home run by Mickey Stanley.
- 1:57:57And they picked up three runs on four hits and it was 4-0 the Tigers.
- 1:58:01And Roy White at his first home run of the year under the right field seats in the upper deck in the night, they got the Yankees on the board.
- 1:58:07Coleman pitched a no hitter for seven and one third innings until Gene Michael singles sharply up the middle with one down in the eighth.
- 1:58:15And Mike Coleman of course spoiled the shutout even.
- 1:58:17So the final run down, the Tigers four runs, 12 hits, no errors.
- 1:58:21The Yankees one run, two hits and no errors.
