- 0:16Hello, and welcome to episode seventeen of Cards and Categories. I am Mike
- 0:21Coolard here from Rasball, joined as always by my good friend Jeremy Burr,
- 0:26also from Rasball. Jeremy, how you doing tonight. I'm doing very very
- 0:30well. Thanks for asking. I'm enjoying the nice, cool weather, freezing
- 0:35snow on a Halloween. I don't know about you up there in Chicago Land,
- 0:38but snow on Halloween is not what the plan was for this year,
- 0:42but we made it by So how are you doing this evening? Yeah,
- 0:47I'm doing pretty well. I'm trying to stay warm here in Chicago. I'm
- 0:51also getting a little like wispy eyed, a little just a little sad because
- 0:56today is like technically one of the first days that we could have had no
- 1:00baseball for the until spring training. So we're rinding down on the end of
- 1:06the season. Currently we're recording on November one, we're watching Game five of
- 1:11the World Series, but yesterday was Game four, and it's possible the Rangers
- 1:17clinched this tonight. But it does make me kind of sad for the end
- 1:21of the season and kind of going into an off season of nothingness, and
- 1:26I guess that's not exactly the most exciting take about this World Series. But
- 1:32I'm feeling melancholic tonight, Brew, I guess is what I can say.
- 1:36I understand it is it's cold, Baseball's ending, you have nothing to look
- 1:42forward to until March. I understand the feelings. So yeah, especially this
- 1:49morning when I was driving to work and it's super cold, that when you're
- 1:53listening to the Baseball podcast when it's cold, it just makes it feel like
- 1:57it's January or February, that it's like spring training. Especially everybody's talking about
- 2:04First Pitch Arizona, which is going on this weekend, and who knows,
- 2:07maybe one day we'll be able to go and enjoy that warm weather down in
- 2:13Arizona. I think quite a few of podcasters and people in our industry are
- 2:19down there at this game. So if anybody is listening to us from first
- 2:23to Arizona, hello, Hello, we wish we were there, not in
- 2:30the cold Midwest. Yeah. I can generally say that at many points in
- 2:35times throughout the year, So I'm not sure that has anything to do with
- 2:38First Pitch in Arizona. Yeah, hopefully they are looking forward to our January
- 2:43pods when that's like the actual case. You know, we've kind of started
- 2:46pulling our hair out after sixty straight days of below zero weather or whatever.
- 2:53But anyways, let's actually focus on that World Series that I glossed right over.
- 2:57We like I said, it's currently game five and we're recording this right
- 3:01at the beginning of kind of the third inning, the bottom of the third
- 3:06so we'll keep you updated as the pod moves on. But it's been I'm
- 3:10kind of bored of the World Series at this point, maybe because the Rangers
- 3:14are so close and the first two games were super awesome. The past two
- 3:20have been a little more black, and part of me too is like I
- 3:25don't want the Rangers to blow this, even though I enjoyed them blowing it
- 3:29in twenty eleven with our Cardinals, but I don't think that's really nice to
- 3:34do to Rangers trans again. So I'm hoping that they can close it out
- 3:37and clinch their first World Series in franchise history. Here, Yeah, I
- 3:42do have to say, like the first few games were like, we're extremely
- 3:44exciting. It was a crazy great start to the World Series, and since
- 3:49then it's it's not for lack of noise during the games, it's been kind
- 3:53of the sequence of noise getting leads and then that we're linquishing them. I
- 3:59don't know. I don't think either of the last two games have had actually
- 4:01a lead change at any point during the game. So that Rangers took the
- 4:08lead, kept the lead into the game, went home, started again,
- 4:13and so yeah, it didn't have as much excitement to it. That said,
- 4:16it doesn't early feel a little bit like the NLCS to a degree where
- 4:24we were kind of feeling the same way as far as the Phillies to try
- 4:28to take out the Diamondback. So I don't want to you know, lock
- 4:31anything and that at this point. Now, by the time we're done recording
- 4:35the pod, we might be locked something in with Baseball's new speed rules,
- 4:41there's actually a chance of that happening. Green is still the World Series,
- 4:44So unless we recorded for the next two and a half hours, I think
- 4:46it will probably still be finishing things up. We just might have an indication
- 4:50where things are going, but it will, you know, I would have
- 4:55to say, I'm I want to see a little more baseball, so I'm
- 4:58pulling for the d Backs to to make it a little bit more of a
- 5:00series, you know, rekindle some of the storylines the underdog and and and
- 5:06give it a shot going back to Texas. But you know, UH,
- 5:12either either team that comes out here, I feel like Texas is the better
- 5:15team. I feel like Texas uh has put a lot in the season and
- 5:19was a It's not like this, this would be a cheap World Series win,
- 5:23so I would be disappointed to see them win. No. And I
- 5:27think maybe part of what I'm is causing me to check out at this point
- 5:31in Game five is the Aduli Scarcia injury, as he kind of very clearly
- 5:36tore his oblique in half, and I heard that he tried to give it
- 5:41a go in the cages before the game yesterday for Game four, And I
- 5:46can't even imagine what that would feel like, trying to tough it through of
- 5:51recently strained oblique and taking hacks that I can I wonder how many he got
- 5:57in like it would be an interesting workout to watch, But I feel like
- 6:00a guy swinging back and out of bed in the morning. Yeah, So
- 6:04I can't imagine with any oblique injury and I've had I personally from playing baseball,
- 6:11I've had an oblique injury before it's it's not fun, it's it's not
- 6:15something you can really battle through, Like it's just pain when you swing a
- 6:19bat. It's just pure pain. There's nothing good that comes from it.
- 6:23So I just can't imagine him, you know, putting anything into the those
- 6:28swings. Yeah, and his historic postseason was just really fascinating to watch.
- 6:33And he's an entertainer and a showman, and I think he's gonna be great
- 6:39for MLB going forward. It'll be interesting to see kind of where the rest
- 6:43of his career goes as he is a little more advanced in age. I
- 6:46think he's thirty three if I'm correct, I should probably know he's been kind
- 6:51of obviously glued all over this series, but he has been really what has
- 6:59carried this playoff kind of show, which is I mean, ultimately the I
- 7:04guess he's only thirty my bad, So he's still got plenty ahead of him
- 7:10as he's you know, just recently started in the league. But I think
- 7:15that the World series almost you get to know these players so much because they're
- 7:19on and it's the ups and downs of the series, so it's like a
- 7:23TV show, and he was certainly the main character and so to pull him
- 7:27out. It is I think made things a little more boring. But like
- 7:31I said, we'll see where this goes from tonight. And I totally kind
- 7:39of already forgot about the NLCS and how the Diamondbacks storm back, So that
- 7:43is kind of good to keep in mind as I can already see the Diamondbacks
- 7:46possibly squeaking this out, and you know, if they've got the momentum rolling
- 7:50into Arlington, no Suerzer, no Garcia, that's when things could maybe get
- 7:57a little dicey for the Rangers. Yeah. I mean, he's still got
- 7:59Corey here, who's gonna try to throw Texas on his back in the piers
- 8:01and do everything he can to uh deliver this championship. And I think that
- 8:07actually could do an amazing amount for Corey seears legacy after you know, playing
- 8:13with the Dodgers bringing home you know, a series there, but you know,
- 8:18he was not the guy, uh putting folks on the back, and
- 8:20in Texas. He's not the guy necessarily in Texas either, but he's one
- 8:26of the guys, one of the main guys, and he's really he himself
- 8:30has made an impact in this in this series. There's there's no question about
- 8:33that. Uh he's single handling one on at least one game in this series,
- 8:37So uh yeah, I think it's it'll be interesting. I if I
- 8:45was betting, I'd say the Diamondbacks, just the way things have gone,
- 8:48they're gonna pull one out tonight and we're gonna we're gonna go back to Texas
- 8:52and and and finish this thing out. So uh, let's see, Let's
- 8:54see how it finishes out, and uh maybe it'll give us a few extra
- 8:58days of baseball before the the off season starts. And then then we got
- 9:01the off season carousel coming, and there's gonna be a lot well I know
- 9:05we're gonna have a lot of fun talking about all the speculation, all the
- 9:07rumors, all the possibilities that we're most definitely gonna be wrong on. So
- 9:13that's the beauty of the off season. So even though you know I'll miss
- 9:18the game, I love the game within the game of the off season.
- 9:22I love the economics of trying to figure out what just the heck everybody's trying
- 9:26to do. And I think sometimes the teams are trying to figure out what
- 9:30the heck everybody's trying to do because they just don't know and there's only so
- 9:33many players to go around, and everybody is trying to win next year.
- 9:37So I'm actually kind of excited to get to the off season here. Yeah,
- 9:41exactly. And I don't know if you're really into like making transactions and
- 9:46like theorizing how to run teams. Have you heard of this thing called fantasy
- 9:50baseball? I think you might like it. Yeah, fantasy baseball. I'm
- 9:54gonna try it out this year. Last few years I just couldn't couldn't stumble
- 10:00upon the game such time writing rankings with like for a game I didn't play.
- 10:05No, I play plenty, play plenty. Don't. Don't you worry.
- 10:07You're not taking poor advice from somebody doesn't play fantasy baseball playing poor advice
- 10:11from somebody that does. Yes, And I will say that we are going
- 10:18to run all off season, so we If you are looking for suggestions for
- 10:24us to talk about in terms of topics for cards or for anything fantasy wise,
- 10:30let us know because it will Otherwise you're just going to get really minute
- 10:35shape Shotani free agency updates from us, because that's where I'll be focused all
- 10:39off season. And Ushi Yamamoto, that's where I'm gonna send my off season.
- 10:43Oh that's a good one too, so yeah, lots of it will
- 10:46be an intriguing off season. But you can email the thepod here at cards
- 10:52Categories at gmail dot com. So reach out to us there, and yeah,
- 10:58for the off season, what are you looking forward to the most other
- 11:01than signings? I mean, are you thinking there's gonna be big moves in
- 11:05terms of front offices or any other like big trade chips or new risers and
- 11:13followers, buyers and sellers in the market. What do you see in your
- 11:16crystal ball over there, Brew, Yeah, I think my crystal ball is
- 11:20telling me that we're gonna have a few teams go through makeovers this offseason,
- 11:24and it's gonna be earlier than folks expect. I think the last few off
- 11:28seasons we've really waited around to see what kind of money was going to be
- 11:33spent, waiting for some big names like Aaron Judge or others to sign.
- 11:39And I crystal ball and there's nothing behind this. There is not like a
- 11:43report somewhere or something like that. It's just that gut feel that I think
- 11:46we're gonna see a few teams really go through a makeover and really redo the
- 11:52roster for for better or worse. I think there's gonna be some teams to
- 11:56say, yep, my windows closing gonna pars some things out, and I'm
- 12:01gonna really reset get young going to the next year as already kind of a
- 12:05rebuild. And I think you're gonna have some teams that look around and say,
- 12:11there's not the same juggernauts that there there has been over the last few
- 12:15years. You're not looking at the Dodgers and going who's gonna beat the Dodgers.
- 12:18Don't get me wrong, there's some good teams. Texas is gonna be
- 12:20continue to be good. There's not much that they're gonna lose lose there.
- 12:24They have a few guys at Garber and stuff. They have to figure out
- 12:26what to do. Montgomery, you have, the Braves are gonna look good,
- 12:30The Phillies are gonna still look good. The Dodgers are still gonna be
- 12:33in the discussion. But I don't see there being a as big of a
- 12:37top dog that there has been in past off seasons. And so the question
- 12:41is who's gonna try to exert that dominance and make a big play. So,
- 12:48like I said, I expect a few big makeovers. A few teams
- 12:50that we don't expect are going to make multiple splashes of free agency, and
- 12:58I don't I originally into the off season before Otani got hurt, I thought
- 13:01the whole market was going to wait for Otani. I think a number of
- 13:05teams are just going to be out on Otani and they're going to try to
- 13:09blitz the market elsewhere. So I think, really think that dynamic of strategy,
- 13:16which we've seen a few teams play in the past where they make some
- 13:18early signings, I think there's going to be a strategy that gets employed this
- 13:20year more than we've seen in the past. So I don't know what about
- 13:24you, what's got you excited for the off season? Yeah, when I
- 13:28kind of look into the crystal ball, on my side, I think the
- 13:31team that's going to be the most consequential here to the offseason has actually already
- 13:37kind of started the off season with the Brewers letting Craig Council be interviewed by
- 13:41the Mets, and there's been a report that the Astros have also kind of
- 13:46checked in since Dusty Baker has retired. So the Brewers I think control a
- 13:52lot of where the off season market's going to go partly because Banel Central is
- 13:58a division where honestly, any of those teams, if they just invest in
- 14:03their rosters and the offseason, could win that division. So it's kind of
- 14:07a stand off to see who's gonna pull the trigger first. And if the
- 14:13Brewers lose Council and decide to blow it up, obviously they're sitting on Corbyn
- 14:18Burns. They could move the Christian Yelich contract to try to get back some
- 14:24you know, maybe pair them together to try to eat or like send some
- 14:28of that money out the door and bring back better prospects. And that Devin
- 14:33Williams. I can see Devin Williams in a trade shift for sure. So
- 14:37like that roster, I think it's just so stars and scrubsy that like it
- 14:43lends itself to being torn apart pretty easily. So we could see them or
- 14:48we could see them swing the other way. Maybe once Craig Council leaves town,
- 14:52they bring in somebody that does push that team closer to you know,
- 14:58end game and sign a free agent or two, or maybe try to make
- 15:01a splash for Yamamoto, or it's not the team could go both ways,
- 15:07And I think it'll be indicative of kind of where the entire temperature of the
- 15:11league is. Yeah, I think I think you're right there. That's the
- 15:16NL Central is gonna be very very interesting because of all the divisions, I
- 15:20feel like that one is the one that is the most unsettled. And it
- 15:24is kind of ironic that you can't I think it's fair, maybe a stretch,
- 15:31but fair to say every team in there could invest in, could win
- 15:33the division. I say, not quite sure. I'm not sure. I'm
- 15:37not just not sure the Pirates are there yet, but that might not be
- 15:41for the next few decades. Yeah, and that's also partly just because we
- 15:46both know the Pirates aren't going to spend money, yes, which is very
- 15:50true. If they spell spit money, they probably can win the division.
- 15:52Yeah. The other one that I think is going to be interesting, and
- 15:56I just saw a report on this today and I know we can link to
- 15:58this in the in the pod notes. The San Diego Padres. You know,
- 16:03we've seen Juan Soto has been kind of on the trade block already already
- 16:07in rumors for teams that are kind of checking in. But those report came
- 16:11out today that the Padres had to take out a loan for fifty million dollars
- 16:15in September due to short term cash flow issues and making sure that they hit
- 16:19payroll. So very interesting for a team has been kind of loose with the
- 16:23checkbook that they are literally having to take a loan out to pay their payroll.
- 16:30That tells you that, you know, they're not adding this this offseason.
- 16:34Maybe maybe it's pure speculation on my part, but that seems like if
- 16:38you're if you're having to go to that that that point, it's it's raises
- 16:45some questions. So one Soto on the trade block actually seems legitimate, you
- 16:48know, and they have a number of big contracts. You know, Josh
- 16:52Haters, a free agent, pretty much tells you he's not coming back.
- 16:56So I think the Padres are one of those teams if they really are having
- 17:00a financial crunch and they're seeing the need to let Hater go, you know,
- 17:06maybe move one so too. They might be looking to part some guys
- 17:11out and try to retool for maybe two three years down the road. Here
- 17:17will I still still have like Tatise under contract, so that'll be a really
- 17:21interesting storyline as well. Yeah, and we'll see how that plays out,
- 17:26I know, they were one of the teams along with the Diamondbacks. I
- 17:30think actually that their Regional Sports Network folded like it went under and went bankrupt
- 17:37as a part of like a collection of the baseball rsns not being able to
- 17:41make payments to their teams. And that's really what's caused a lot of these
- 17:45teams to have pretty liquid pocketbooks because those payments from the rsns are hundreds of
- 17:55millions of dollars, and one that goes out from underneath, you obviously end
- 17:57up where like the padres are, So it would be I don't know,
- 18:02like the mechanics of the finances too, Like you know, was it a
- 18:06loan on like a line of credit or did they have to get a new
- 18:10loan or is there some sort of loan being taken out against future RSN earnings
- 18:15when they get a new RSEN or something like that. You know, it's
- 18:18there's so many unknowns with with that type of report, And to be very
- 18:22frank, I read the headlines. I didn't have time to read the report,
- 18:26no full report yet, but yeah, it could be it could be
- 18:30absolutely nothing, but it's it's it's an indicator at this at this point.
- 18:36So but I will say that. I think the reason of story like that
- 18:40gets floated into the media too is because the owner is looking for a reason
- 18:44to scale back and say, hey, things have gone awry, so I've
- 18:48got to scale back. No, no small spending and it could be another
- 18:53big market force and you know, allow teams to really load up. Yeah,
- 19:00I think so. But hey, it's gonna be it's gonna be a
- 19:03fun offseason. I know, you know, we'll have what the call before
- 19:04the storm. It's kind of like a for those that don't know the you
- 19:08know, the kind of mechanics of the off season. You know, we
- 19:11get kind of like a five day waiting period after the World Series before you
- 19:18know, cre agents can start signing with other other clubs. They mist make
- 19:22decisions on options, things like that, and then things will really kick off
- 19:26here and about about a week you got GM meetings uh taking place in Arizona.
- 19:32So things will start to pick up speed, but not really until after
- 19:37the non tender deadline here about the middle, I think it's the seventeenth of
- 19:41November. I guess it sounds better to say the tender deadline than the non
- 19:45tender deadline. It's very class half empty. Yeah, but you know,
- 19:52once we get past the November seventeenth, I think that's really where things will
- 19:56start to pick up. So for me, Winter WE meetings always one of
- 20:00the most exciting parts about about the winter. That's December fourth through six this
- 20:04year over in Nashville, So I'm sure that'll give us a lot of excitement
- 20:08as well to go through. So ready to get ready to get in the
- 20:12off season here once once we get to a resolution on the on the World
- 20:15Series and see what what it brings, because I'm sure every time we get
- 20:22we jump together it'll be it'll be fun because we'll have some new rumor to
- 20:26talk about. Yeah, and maybe even somebody getting bounced from team to team
- 20:32like Karls Korea. We'll see. It should be an interesting off season.
- 20:36And we will recap the whole twenty twenty three season a little bit more next
- 20:40week as we kind of get into the conclusion of the World Series and you
- 20:44know, make some picks for awards and things like that. So we are
- 20:48looking forward to that next week. But for this week, we've got a
- 20:52couple of really great topics. We've got an overview of tops holiday twenty twenty
- 20:56three that we've been hinting at it just it was supposed to technically come out
- 21:00tomorrow on the calendar. I was looking back at our calendar, but it
- 21:03just kind of like flopped out last week between Walmart shipping their pre orders and
- 21:08it hit Tops dot com. And so we will do an overview of that
- 21:12as we've had some fun seeing the cards come out of that set right now,
- 21:18and then for the categories discussion the fantasy side, we're gonna look at
- 21:22some early NFBC data from twenty twenty four drafts that has happened over the past
- 21:26month and go through and see some guys that we consider land mines that they
- 21:33just really look like they're overvalued and we are not interested in those prices.
- 21:38So we'll go over why and kind of what other options might be around those
- 21:42guys in those drafts when we're looking forward to the off season. So stick
- 21:48around here. We'll be right back all right, and welcome back here to
- 22:10the cards section of cards and categories. We are going to do an overview
- 22:15of twenty twenty three Tops Holiday today. So, like I said before the
- 22:19break, we've been hinting at this release for a few weeks just because it's
- 22:23one of our favorite rips of the year. It's very cheap and affordable and
- 22:29also easy to find. It's usually at Walmart's or on walmart dot com,
- 22:33So it's usually a very plentiful set, and it's meant more so for holiday
- 22:38gifts obviously on the during the holiday season. It's the entire set, and
- 22:45the premise behind it is they take the base tops flagship cards of players and
- 22:52create a set that has a holiday twist to it. So this year they've
- 22:56got candy canes on the outside borders, and they've got snowflakes in the backgrounds
- 23:03of the cards, and then they always have metallic parallels and lots of short
- 23:07prints that are just goofy beyond like goofiness, And so for all those factors,
- 23:14it's a really fun product to open with, you know, people who
- 23:19have lots of experience, because it gives a little bit of something new,
- 23:23people who are just entering the product or entering baseball card collecting, because it
- 23:30is relatively cheap, and I think especially for kids that like it's got a
- 23:34lot of really goofy stuff for kids to look at on the cards. So
- 23:38all those factors have really made it a popular release every year. And we're
- 23:44definitely a part of those fans that make it popular. So brew would have
- 23:48been some of your favorite parts about Top Soliday traditionally as a set, and
- 23:52going into maybe what some of your favorite parts of this year's set have been.
- 23:57Yeah, I think for me, probably probably one of the biggest things
- 24:02for the set is, uh, you know, there's one one box,
- 24:07one style of box. There's not hobbies, not jumbos. It's get one
- 24:11megabox, ten packs, ten cards, so it's but there's always a guarantee
- 24:15of an Autowa relic and so like the for a price point about thirty bucks,
- 24:21uh, you definitely feel like you're always going to get something. And
- 24:25you know that's even though the relics, let's let's own them. They're kind
- 24:29of goofy. They're not the most exciting, there's very small patches, but
- 24:33they're still fun. And the fun of the set, I think to me
- 24:37is that pretty much every pack you're getting some type of short prints, some
- 24:41type of uh, you know, parallel and there they are, to your
- 24:47point, a little goofy. You know, whether it's a candy cane bat
- 24:49to the Santa hat or you got a necklace of of Christmas lights, and
- 24:55I'm sure I didn't look too closely if we had. I know, last
- 24:57year they had holiday sleeves, and I think they've got a fews this year,
- 25:03just the arm sleeves. So it's kind of kind of fun. Actually
- 25:07a few like snowmen hiding in the background. But I always get a kick
- 25:11out of the searching for the short prints, uh anymore and your your base
- 25:15products, because it used to be so hard to find the short prints that
- 25:18actually turn those around, and your your flagship products. So you're going through
- 25:22your pack and all of a sudden you had a backwards card. It's usually
- 25:26a short print or an auto or some type of special insert top holiday.
- 25:30They don't do that. They're still generally in the middle of the packs.
- 25:33But you have to like look closely and like study these cards. And I
- 25:37know what we can talk through here, but you know, you can identify
- 25:40them a little bit if you if you dig on the back of the cards,
- 25:41look at the the serial numbers to a degree, but you know you
- 25:45have to you're doing a little hunting, be like, hey, I just
- 25:47pulled this this rookie card, and is it special? And you don't don't
- 25:52know, especially if you're opening on the first day, you don't know what's
- 25:55what's so special about it. So I just get a kick out of that.
- 26:00And it's just a it's the fun little thing. If you want to
- 26:03chase the call it the rainbow of your favorite player. You know, at
- 26:07most there's four cards, four or five cards maybe that you'd be chasing as
- 26:12far as like the variations are concerned. And so again, something's fun,
- 26:17easy to do. Uh, at the end of the day. Top so
- 26:19holiday doesn't really hold a whole lot of value beyond the first year or so
- 26:26after they're polled. Maybe you know, the biggest names, uh, their
- 26:30rookies might have something down the line for the super short prints. So so
- 26:34I love the love the set. I think part for me so far,
- 26:37probably my favorite thing with this year's set has just been the I feel like
- 26:45the quality of the I'm gonna call it the candy Cane bat short prints has
- 26:53been very high quality. And what I mean by it is they don't look
- 26:56nearly as hokey as of the past. And I don't think this year we
- 27:02have the Santa Belt parallels where they actually replaced the belt of the player.
- 27:07Yeah, I didn't see a whole lot of those. Maybe I just didn't
- 27:11pull any maybe you did, And so, like actually going back to what
- 27:15you were talking about in terms of sometimes not being able to spot it,
- 27:18I pulled the ultra short print parallel of Gunner Henderson, which is the Santa
- 27:25Belt parallel, and I didn't know it was at the at first. I
- 27:27had set it off in my pile of rookies. And I opened two boxes
- 27:32last week of Top Holiday, and when I started sorting through my pile of
- 27:37rookie cards, I had two Gunner Henderson rookies. Noticed that one of them
- 27:41looked a little funny, and it's because it was the Santa Belt parallel,
- 27:45so I would say it might Yeah, it might be the hardest one to
- 27:51see because there's an Otani Santa Belt as well, and I'm just looking.
- 27:56We'll also link to the list of short prints because it is really fun and
- 28:00I think it's hard to do justice on a audio medium like this to what
- 28:04these cards look like. And it's certainly a fun list of short prints to
- 28:11check out because they are really entertaining. So the Santa Belt cards are in
- 28:17there. I can see you on our zoom call looking through your stack of
- 28:19cards right now trying to see if you've got one, because they don't pop
- 28:23out very well. They're definitely the hardest ones to find. Along with you'll
- 28:27also see there's some parallels that have like elves or snowmen or Santa Clauses that
- 28:34are blurred into the background with the crowd and they don't stand out. So
- 28:41those are other ones where I look for them when I'm at card shows,
- 28:44because sometimes those cards end up in very cheap boxes because people gloss over how
- 28:52short printed some of them are. Yeah, to that point. I think
- 28:56it was earlier this year, and being a big card fan, I collected
- 29:02a lot of Dylan Carlson when he was rookie, and that was one of
- 29:03the guys that I was trying to complete the I'll It Holiday Rainbow set for
- 29:11And I remember right after that came out, I actually bought the super short
- 29:14print it was him, his holiday sleeve version, you know, for like
- 29:19five bucks because somebody thought it was a different parallel on eBay. So I
- 29:25bought that one, and then I held it for like a day that I'm
- 29:26like, this is like seventy dollars cards. So I sold it for seventy
- 29:30dollars, and then like it took like two years. I was going through
- 29:33a dollar box at the show, and sure enough I came across the card
- 29:36for a dollar, and you know, got at the point is probably want
- 29:40worth like ten because his cards come down. But again it's a super short
- 29:45print. So and I found myself kind of looking. I saw a lot
- 29:48of Holiday cards and it was just so hard to remember which which one is
- 29:52the super short which one is the short But and for those that don't know,
- 29:57every card has a code on the very back of the card, and
- 30:03based on those codes, you can determine if it's a base card, sp
- 30:06A rare super rare card. I think this year's I was looking. I
- 30:11think there's actually two numbers for base I can't remember off the top of my
- 30:15head with what they were. I should look, as I have some sitting
- 30:18right here. I think it was into a six or ten. We're the
- 30:23base the base cards, and then if in like a fourteen fifteen sixteen,
- 30:26we're all the sps. So if you're not quite sure and you're opening the
- 30:32tops Holiday, look at the pictures and turn your at the end of the
- 30:36ripping that thing open, go through the back all your cards, because I
- 30:38did miss some as I was going through, and I went through on the
- 30:41back and count the numbers that that called it out. So definitely definitely a
- 30:48fun product that I love the fact that you have to still search for the
- 30:51sps a little bit, where you don't nearly need to as much in the
- 30:53other products these days. Yeah, And I think it's also an easy product
- 30:57to get into because the lack of parallels that obviously are stick here is going
- 31:03through the list of all the parallels on some of our favorite sets, and
- 31:06how absurd the list is because especially when we were getting into this in the
- 31:11eighties and nineties, those cards didn't have the same list of thirty five parallels.
- 31:18I think it was in top scrome. You have like a gold foil
- 31:22and nothing else is like gold foil base. Yeah, there's the two foils.
- 31:26So there's the metallic foil, the base silver metallic foil, which is
- 31:32much more common than you have a red and then a gold. So that's
- 31:34your entire rainbow here and then those short prints. So it's a much easier
- 31:41set to put together. And as you alluded to, it is a set
- 31:45that doesn't hold a ton of value, so like it's a good one too.
- 31:48Where to sit on it for a little bit, you know, maybe
- 31:52try to find some of the rarer stuff now while it's out there and has
- 31:59tailed off a little bit price. But it's also a good one to come
- 32:01back to a couple of months later to try to finish off if you're trying
- 32:06to do this short rainbow, because the prices do fall off, especially because
- 32:10it's one of the last sets of twenty twenty three and people will really be
- 32:14into twenty twenty four Maynia soon. Yeah, and I it was fun to
- 32:19see it was a little earlier this year, ar if. I called,
- 32:22and I was I think it all had to do with advertisements for the holidays,
- 32:27Christmas advertisements coming out a little earlier than they have in the years past.
- 32:31I've heard Christmas music on the radio just this morning, and that's I'm
- 32:37thinking it was correlation with tops holiday coming out. So you're right, they
- 32:40didn't come out a little earlier. But very again, very fun product.
- 32:46You know. I actually I ripped two boxes. How many? How many
- 32:50did you rip? Just too? And yeah, you know what, I'm
- 32:53going back through the checklist. We didn't even talk about the ridiculous fake relics
- 32:58that are in this product, which are what have make it kind of like
- 33:02even more fun is that you will. I don't know if they're signed this
- 33:06year, but traditionally they've had these fake relics from Santa and Elves and well,
- 33:12I guess they're real. Sorry if they're children listening, they're real relics
- 33:17of Christmas characters that have pieces of jerseys or worn clothes from Santa and the
- 33:27Elves and signatures too. So the this year, I don't know if they're
- 33:32signed. I haven't seen any pictures of them. I know if they're short
- 33:36printed. Yeah. They actually do have the Holiday FO Relics Autograph Checklist,
- 33:39which you know the cards. There's the Elf, Frosty, Mister and Missus
- 33:45clause. Actually there's two Santa clauses in there, and they are one and
- 33:51roughly twenty four thousand packs say, printed to twenty five apiece, and so
- 33:57they you would think it'd be hokey and people would hate these things, but
- 34:00people love them. I'm telling you, the old ones from they're the one
- 34:04thing that I think do keep their value. Whenever they come up and go
- 34:07on eBay, they go for hundreds of dollars apiece because people have huge collections
- 34:13of these things because they just enjoy the nature of the card collecting and how
- 34:19just hilarious these cards look to have this Santa signed relics. So if you
- 34:23do pull one of those, I think those are one of the major hits
- 34:27of the product is getting one of the signed relics. Yeah. So I'm
- 34:30just looking on some eBay sales here just for fun and a little hard to
- 34:37find because there is just kind of like a was there such thing as a
- 34:39base short print non relic shortprint of Santa that seems to be going for a
- 34:45few of them that are going for in the twenty to forty dollars range.
- 34:50I saw one of the relics out of twenty five Santa relics out of twenty
- 34:54five that went for four hundred dollars. Yeah. And I have not seen
- 35:00any of the autos that at this point that had come through, and I
- 35:06don't I don't know if there's and I was just looking at the Santa one,
- 35:13so I'm not sure if there's any Frosty out there, or Missus Clause
- 35:19or Elf was up there. There is actually one Frosty on auction right now.
- 35:25It is left, I'm gonna I'm gonna wait, I'm gonna probably try
- 35:29to snipe it that later when we get when we get off the out of
- 35:35the pod beer. But yeah, definitely, definitely that gives a little extra
- 35:39I know a lot of breakers like to random those off because you know,
- 35:44if you're breaking by team or something like that, nobody's you know, it's
- 35:46not you're not generally selling the spot for the five really rare relics or relic
- 35:52autos, So that's always a fun, fun hit if you do get them.
- 35:55I forgot about those this year. Yeah, and so if you are
- 35:59ripping some, we wish you great luck in trying to pull one of those,
- 36:02because they are really fun. And I've never seen one in person.
- 36:06I've just seen them on eBay, but I think they would be a really
- 36:09cool card to just hold for a little bit. I will say my biggest
- 36:14luck this year was I got two top loader ornaments in one box instead of
- 36:17one. WHOA, So you know, I was living really high because I
- 36:23got Paul Goldman and Nolan Arenado. So I got my Cardinals ornaments that I
- 36:30now have no idea what to do with because you can't find a top loader
- 36:32Save your Life. It'll fit one of those ornament cards. I mean,
- 36:35you're supposed to put it on the tree. Oh yeah, I'm sure that
- 36:38would go for well in my house, That's where I'm putting Mike Brian buckson
- 36:45that I've got left. So but anyways, that I think puts a pretty
- 36:51good bow on everything. For what you did there, what you did there,
- 36:54Yep, we can package it up. And so the schedule for our
- 37:00upcoming releases actually is holden pretty steady. The only thing we have coming that
- 37:05was added to the upcoming release schedule is on twelve six, Pennini National Treasures
- 37:08is coming out, and otherwise looks like November is going to happen as planned.
- 37:14So we will post those in the show notes so you can check them
- 37:19out, and we will wrap up the card section here. We'll be back
- 37:22with the category section after the break. Welcome back everybody to the category section
- 37:46of cards and categories here. And for the fantasy topic this week, we
- 37:51are going to get into what we're going to call land mines from some recent
- 37:54NFBC draft data. And we're not just working with a small sample size like
- 38:02in Baseball Heroic and with like a super small sample size. But NFBC is
- 38:08the National Fantasy Baseball Championship if you don't know, it's really like the most
- 38:13premier fantasy baseball site or just place where people play. And they've already started
- 38:20twenty twenty four drafts. The buy ins are really high, so you know,
- 38:23people are really intense and trying to win these leagues, and lots of
- 38:28high rollers and sharp dudes in these leagues from all across the industry. So
- 38:34they've opened their twenty twenty four drafts. There's been five in total so far
- 38:37from October first through November first. So, like I said, we're working
- 38:44with a very limited sample size here on draft data, but we went through
- 38:47and found some guys that really popped out to us as if that's the price
- 38:52that we're gonna have to be paying at the draft table in twenty twenty four
- 38:55for these guys, we are unsure we're in on them and probably have too
- 39:00many shares or are trying to warn people that, you know, if you're
- 39:05seeing the prices like this in your home league, maybe stay awake. So
- 39:09there's going to be better options. So we'll give an overview of who these
- 39:13players are, what maybe some of your other options are and why we would
- 39:17rather go with the alternative. So, Brew, what do you think about
- 39:22working with five drafts here? You feel uncomfortable, You feel like we're going
- 39:24to be made to look like idiots here in a couple of weeks. Yes,
- 39:34little bit of both. And I think the other thing to say about
- 39:36the NFBC to your point that there's a little bit of high rollerness to them,
- 39:40and I have no idea these five they are high roll or not.
- 39:43But you do tend to see just kind of a warning on using an FBC.
- 39:46You do tend to see more aggressive picks because of the high roller nature.
- 39:52Because a lot of those leagues you're trying to it's a winner or go
- 39:55home. It's not like, you know, maybe like a dynasty type thought
- 40:00process where you're building it's generally not paying top three places things like that.
- 40:05So you will see more aggressive picks at times, trying to hit big and
- 40:09win the league. So just a food for thought as we go through.
- 40:15But yes, five drafts one can vastly throw off the actual you know,
- 40:22Delta's and I let's take an example, just for fun of our good friend
- 40:28the Shoheo Atani. He's had a range of ninth to twenty ninth in these
- 40:34drafts, and so you know, his rank rank of seventeenth overall is very
- 40:39much all over the place because of some of those picks, and so it's
- 40:45it's interesting how much that can drive, Like, I don't know what the
- 40:50guy was doing that took Kevin Gossman seventeenth overall, but hey, more power
- 40:54to you. So it's it's early, it's a small sample, but it's
- 41:00still fun. So let's jump in to those planlines. Yeah, and the
- 41:05first one is going to be pretty close to that Shoho Tani at the average
- 41:09position of seventeen. But this guy has got an average position right right now
- 41:15of nineteenth, and that is Elie de la Cruz from the Cincinnati Reds.
- 41:20He is going to qualify I think it pretty much all leagues at short and
- 41:24third next year, so that might be a little bit of the factor here.
- 41:29But he's going between one Soto, Corey Seeger, Austin Riley. Those
- 41:38are the names that are going around him currently on this list. And I
- 41:44don't like, I don't even know if I need to do any more analysis
- 41:46than saying, like, did these guys watch Elie de la Cruz in the
- 41:52last halfs of the like season from after his hot June where he three oh
- 42:00seven. Here is this average by month for July, August, and September
- 42:05slash October two thirty eight one ninety eight two oh two. And let me
- 42:10find the strikeout rates that correspond there. And we are looking at strikeout rates
- 42:20of it's not going to be pretty, so it's going to be real gross.
- 42:25We've got it started at thirty percent thirty point five in June and that
- 42:31was I think workable. Goes from thirty four point eight percent thirty seven point
- 42:37nine percent in August, so he's really struggling. And he brought it back
- 42:40down to thirty point eight percent in September. In October, but again he
- 42:46still wasn't getting on base. He had a WRC plus that went from one
- 42:53thirty one to seventy two to sixty nine to seventy one that even with the
- 42:59eye test could tell you to struggling at the plate and just having trouble adjusting
- 43:04to the majors that adjusted to him that it's a real, real risky spot
- 43:10to take your nineteenth pick. Ellie de la Cruz when the floor is back
- 43:16in triple A for what three four eighty percent of the year. Yeah,
- 43:21I'm I'm right there with you. I actually have Eli Dela Cruz in a
- 43:25league that you and I are both in from a dynasty perspective, and I
- 43:30am really struggling with him because you know, he's gonna get some some some
- 43:34dollars allocated, and he's his price is gonna be going up. And I
- 43:37don't know if his if this is the price, if his ceiling from a
- 43:43price perspective's ever higher. Don't get me wrong in incredibly talented, incredibly talented
- 43:47guy, but he is living on the edge with his approach. And when
- 43:53the risk is that you're not playing because you're getting sent down to work on
- 43:59your plate approach, which is really the risk you have here with Ellie.
- 44:02Like, if you actually look at his stat cast, is his atrocious,
- 44:07Like it is just downright disgusting with he He has strong exit velocity and speed,
- 44:15that's it. Nothing else. He is in the bottom quarter of the
- 44:20league in literally almost every other metric as far as his ex batting average,
- 44:27his sweet spot, his k his chase rate X slugging like everything like that.
- 44:31So he is he's like Adam Dunn that can run, And I don't
- 44:37know if that's a fair comparison, but it feels right. And so there's
- 44:42a lot of risk here, don't get me wrong, tons of talent.
- 44:44You can easily dream on this guy going like pulling a Ronald Kunya and going
- 44:49forty seventy. Now I mean not realistic to a degree, but like,
- 44:53if there's another guy that can do something like this, you can look at
- 44:55Ellie and be like, yeah, I could see it. But there's a
- 45:00ton of risk here, and there's a lot of guys early in the draft
- 45:07that I will avoid sol And then I'm talking five by five here, right,
- 45:09talking five by five, not talking obp leagues. Batting average that will
- 45:16that will tank you. If you don't pick up batting average early in drafts,
- 45:21especially next year, you are tanking yourself for one of your categories the
- 45:25entire year. And so I think that alone will just trake down guys like
- 45:30Elie de la Cruz, Pete Alonzo, Kyle Schwarber, things like that,
- 45:34where exciting players valuable in the ball field can do all kinds of things.
- 45:39But for your five by five game, where one categories is average, you
- 45:45will have to be almost perfect across the board everywhere else. Yeah, I
- 45:49totally agree, and I think it it's nothing against Eli de la Cruz and
- 45:53his overall talent. It's just that I need to see that swinging strike rate
- 46:00be able to be reasonable because it's just like or just bad bad, Yeah
- 46:07exactly that, Like, I just it's so outlandish. It was thirty point
- 46:12two percent last year on in total, and that includes all of the good
- 46:15work that he did when he first came up and all that bad work that
- 46:20I've rattled off too. So it's real tough to make a living with a
- 46:24swinging strike rate of thirty percent in the league. And so the I mean,
- 46:30I know that you hinted at like Ronald Lacunya and like getting to upper
- 46:34level, but Acunya's was never over twenty eight point two percent, and that
- 46:37was in twenty twenty, so it's a little bit of an anomaly other than
- 46:40that was twenty six point six percent. So like, he's got to be
- 46:45impacting the ball more to be able to get the most out of it.
- 46:51Plus he's honestly not hitting enough fly balls. He's only hitting twenty one point
- 46:55eight percent fly balls last year, and that is scary as well that obviously
- 47:00he's got the speed to put on the ground, but you need to be
- 47:02getting that ball up to get it over the fence, and so just a
- 47:07lot of risk that I'm not really willing to take that early in the draft.
- 47:13I will let's run through real quick of like the next infielders behind him,
- 47:16to see how far we have to go before we find one that one
- 47:22of us would take over Ellie or like not take over Ellie. I think
- 47:25it might go for a little bit. So the next infielder after him is
- 47:31Corey Seger. You going Seeger Ellie? Yep, give me Sieger. Same,
- 47:37Austin Riley, gimme Riley, same Ozzie Alvi's give me Alby's over Riley
- 47:44or Seeger? Okay, Yeah, next guy, I'm actually gonna skip because
- 47:47he's our next discussion point and I think this is actually maybe where the line
- 47:53would be. But the next guy is Francisco Lindor. Yeah, I'm probably
- 47:59taking door here, so but it's starting to get close. Gunner Henderson,
- 48:07oh Ill, I'm still taking Gunner. I'm taking Gunner, And honestly,
- 48:13like, if you want a guy with that's young and has big upside.
- 48:16Why not take Gunner over Ellie? Yeah, I think, and I we
- 48:22can keep going down the list, but you've got guys like Marcus Simeon,
- 48:25Boba Schett, jose L Tuve all in that infield, and I think where
- 48:30I start to really start to question is going to be in like the j
- 48:36Abrams, Jan Chism, Nico Horner, Matt McClain type of area. That's
- 48:42exactly where I would want to put Ellie. That's the tier I have him
- 48:45and c. J Abrams is fortieth. Yes, so you were you were
- 48:49paying double the cost here that that you really should be for Ellie de la
- 48:55Cruz. And then I understand that he's exciting, but if he's going to
- 48:59that point, I will have zero sheriffs next year. And if there's anybody
- 49:02that proaches me in my Dynasty League paying that price, you better believe I'm
- 49:07capitalizing on it. Yeah, I totally agree. So I think that rounds
- 49:12out Ellie pretty well. Let's get back to that number twenty three guy,
- 49:15and that is Royce Lewis from the Twins should also qualify at third base and
- 49:21shortstop for next year. I think I have Royce down in that same tier
- 49:25that we just mentioned in terms of like the Jazz Chisholm cj Abrams mac McClain
- 49:31area, and so again like he's going about twice as expensive as he should
- 49:38be, that he's going twenty third and I think he should be going maybe
- 49:42more like forty to fifty. And I love the bad ball data from Royce
- 49:47Lewis that unlike Ellie, he doesn't have the strikeout issues. He doesn't have
- 49:52the issues barreling the ball and getting it off the ground. It's just pure
- 49:58injury. Like he's got a knee that has had a torn ACL twice and
- 50:04he only has posted. Wow, he's only posted two hundred eighty played appearances
- 50:09on his career seventy games, and it's amazing. It's a three oh seven,
- 50:14three sixty four five forty nine line in those seventy games, good for
- 50:19a one to fifty three WRC, plus that came with seventeen homers six stolen
- 50:22bases. You pretty much double that for a full season. It's thirty four
- 50:27homers and twelve stolen bases, and it would be amazing. But I don't
- 50:32know how you could ever pencil him in for I don't even know how many
- 50:37at bets to give him. I'm not gonna lie. It's gonna be really
- 50:39hard penciling that in to the projections for next year. Yeah, And I'm
- 50:45I'm typically a little bit more willing to take the injury risk than you are,
- 50:49and so I'm I'm willing to look at this point the other way a
- 50:52little bit on the injury risk for him. What really disappoints me with Lewis
- 50:55is that he performed really well at the end of the season, which is
- 51:00causing this helium that you could see it coming, like I think I wrote
- 51:02about it. I think I'm sure you did. Of I think it was
- 51:07probably early or probably late August, where like you could see that he was
- 51:13the things were clicking, that he had made some adjustments and like he was
- 51:15finally healthy and doing some things and it was really exciting. It's like,
- 51:20man, this is the guy who can flying to the radar the last month
- 51:22the season and he is going to be a steal at pick like eighty seventy
- 51:29somewhere in there next year. And he just went off hit grand slams left
- 51:34and right, and he was making news everywhere and even during the time when
- 51:38people are looking the other way, for fantasy football. So unfortunately, like
- 51:43I do actually like him, I actually do like him better than Ellie.
- 51:46And I'm slightly higher than that jazz typeism type position within the draft, but
- 51:54not by much. So maybe to like the Bo Baschett JOSEL two b t
- 52:00yep, right right there, Like if I'm taken there, I'm probably taking
- 52:02al two ve Lewis and them to set is probably where where I would be
- 52:07going. And that's just because I'm high on all two ve low on the
- 52:10shed, But I think that's the right type of area for me for Royce
- 52:15Lewis. But he's going He's going a decent amount higher than that right now.
- 52:21And that's a combination of youth and recency bias, that's all. That's
- 52:25all it is. When you got a guy likes l twov, you can
- 52:30pick up who's gonna hit almost three hundred. He's he's gonna play almost every
- 52:35game. Like, yeah, you're you're missing out on something there. Take
- 52:38this take the safe bet. Uh, don't be playing with house money on
- 52:43this one. Yeah, And so I I think that that price will probably
- 52:50settle down a little bit as the kind of fantasy baseball world gets further and
- 52:57further along here towards the twenty twenty four season. But I don't think it's
- 53:00gonna drop much below like pick forty and yeah, I don't even know actually
- 53:07that maybe thirty five, like Royce Lewis, is going to be a very
- 53:10very hot name once you line up. Like I said, it's pretty easy
- 53:14to double those career statistics and see what a full season at peak could look
- 53:19like. Yeah, especially when you see a guy that's stroke cut rking on
- 53:22the low twenties. You know, his stack cast numbers all look pretty solid,
- 53:27and you know he's you know, he was a number one pick.
- 53:29Like all these things add up that he's just got growth and so yeah,
- 53:34it's it's easy. It's really easy to be excited and look at what he
- 53:37can do for you. And in almost all aspects of he did even run
- 53:40a little bit, which is not something I really entirely expected from Lewis after
- 53:45all the injury issues he's had. So, like I said, I really
- 53:49like Royce Lewis, I just don't like him at the price that he's he's
- 53:52currently being charged. Just I'm not as far off as I was on Elle
- 53:59here. Yeah, I think that makes sense and so the next one that
- 54:02we have is I think it's a little bit more of a hidden land mine
- 54:07because the surface stats actually from this past year put this guy twenty fifth.
- 54:13Let me check again, twenty fifth on our rasball player Raider for total value
- 54:17for twenty twenty three, and so he's being drafted thirtieth overall right now.
- 54:22And that's Luis Castillo picture from the Mariners, which if that is, you
- 54:28know, what we could expect from him going forward in terms of this year
- 54:32that you know, he put up a three thirty four ra over one hundred
- 54:37and ninety seven innings, which I think that's really a lot of where the
- 54:39value came from was pumping out all those innings this past year compared to everybody
- 54:44else, and he did it at a rate of ten k's per nine to
- 54:47give him a total strikeout number of two nineteen this year. So it was
- 54:52a really nice year with those fourteen wins for Luis Castillo, But I think
- 54:59you and I are a little bit worried about those underlying numbers in terms of
- 55:02what's going behind the ray and behind that wonderful strikeout rate. And maybe not
- 55:12the strikeout rays much, but just like the overall, Era grew. What
- 55:15do you see in those numbers that really could portend some problems here if you're
- 55:20taking Louis Castillo around the thirtieth pick, yeah, I think that what there's
- 55:24a number of concerning things at that at that point. First of all,
- 55:28I think your point's right, Like it's a volume play. He had fourteen
- 55:31wins and he pitched only nearly two hundred innings, and so strikeouts and the
- 55:37wins are really caring here. Don't be wrong, good Era. But if
- 55:42you start to look and I'm not even looking like deep under the covers here
- 55:45with loss to you, like his fastball velocity is the lowest it's been in
- 55:51five years. It's his his x CRA, his his x FIP, all
- 55:58those the worst they've been in five or six years. He had BEBA two
- 56:02sixty seven, which is lowest that's been in five years. And the one
- 56:07that really jumps out is he's traditionally been a ground ball pitcher, and his
- 56:12career ground ball rates over fifty percent, including this year. This year he
- 56:15was at thirty nine percent out in Seattle, which is really opening him up.
- 56:21He had an actually relatively low home run for a fly ball rate for
- 56:24his career this year, and so he's but he had a lot more home
- 56:29runs per nine because he was giving so many more fly balls, and so
- 56:32he is teetering on the edge of things that if all the pieces don't come
- 56:38together, not returning that value, and he's going off of what the fifth
- 56:43pitcher on the board, number five, And I think a lot of that
- 56:46goes to as you mentioned, it goes to the rating this year and not
- 56:54as many pitchers pitching deep into the season. But it's like you're you're talking
- 57:00about Louis Castillo in the same breadth of Corbyn Burns and Zach Wheeler and Zach
- 57:05Gallon and guys like that, and I'm just it just doesn't feel right to
- 57:08me. Yeah, I mean, it's not like he's that far off,
- 57:13but he's a he's a guy that really should be going maybe two three rounds
- 57:17later at this point in time. So I'm I'm a little nervous and I'd
- 57:23much rather wait around another like you know, twenty thirty picks for an Aaron
- 57:31Nola or Freddie Peralta or a Codea singajzos Lozardo, those kind of guys.
- 57:38There's a lot more in the mid rounds. That excites me just as much
- 57:44as Louis Castillo. Yeah, and I I agree with you obviously, that's
- 57:49why he's on our Land Minds list. But this was very scientific, by
- 57:52the way. Yeah, but I think the barrel rate this year also really
- 57:57shot up. It went up to a career high night point four percent,
- 58:00when traditionally it had been in the mid fs during twenty nineteen to twenty twenty
- 58:07one, and shot up to a little bit to six point eight percent in
- 58:10twenty twenty two nine point four percent, and twenty twenty three also put up
- 58:15a career worse forty one point eight percent hard hit rate. So there was
- 58:21a lot of luck that Luis Castillo ran into. And maybe it is Julia
- 58:24Rodriguez out there shagging balls for him at center field, But I don't like
- 58:30that trending of where the hard contacts going. And this is a little bit
- 58:34more of a softer thing. But as I've played immaculate grid bore and more
- 58:37like, this really stands out when you see somebody back in the day that
- 58:42put up some amazing sy young season, like I think of Mike Scott or
- 58:47Steve Stone, where these huge, monstrous, large volume Cy Young seasons come
- 58:53out of nowhere and they were throwing two hundred and fifty, two hundred and
- 58:57seventy innings and then like you look at the rest of their career and they
- 59:00totally flame out because they just pushed it so hard in that one year that,
- 59:06I mean, one hundred and ninety seven innings. I know it sounds
- 59:08weak that, like I'm worried about that compared to what I just rouled off
- 59:13for like Scott and Steve Stone back in the day. But there's a reason
- 59:17lots of dudes aren't throwing that many innings nowadays, and that's not I don't
- 59:23think something I like to see is a career high in innings like that,
- 59:30because I think it really does come pretty downhill from there. Especially you know,
- 59:36Luis Castillo is getting past thirty. He just turned thirty this year,
- 59:39and so it kind of things are going to start fading, and he's showing
- 59:44a lot of those signs of that fade starting now. Yeah, So let's
- 59:49hit the similar
