- 0:39SPEAKER_04: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_04: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:50SPEAKER_04: Tristan, we are back, baby, after a long 10-day hiatus.
- 0:56SPEAKER_08: I'm sorry, I was almost going to interrupt you there because I was about to bust from excitement.
- 1:00SPEAKER_08: We we are back.
- 1:01SPEAKER_08: And so was Texas Tech basketball, baby.
- 1:04SPEAKER_08: Our death was greatly exaggerated.
- 1:06SPEAKER_04: After the Kansas State game, the people claimed we are dead.
- 1:11SPEAKER_04: No way.
- 1:12SPEAKER_04: This team is not that good.
- 1:13SPEAKER_04: And then we go and beat the absolute breaks off of Iowa State.
- 1:18SPEAKER_04: But first, before we talk about any of this, we have to do something we haven't done in quite a long time, actually, since football season.
- 1:26SPEAKER_04: And we have so many good wins under our belt that we have to do it.
- 1:31SPEAKER_04: It's only right and fair.
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: It's only right and fair.
- 1:35SPEAKER_08: We're gonna play the song.
- 1:36SPEAKER_08: Here we go.
- 1:37SPEAKER_08: Play the song, Steven.
- 1:38SPEAKER_08: DJ, please, play the song.
- 1:40SPEAKER_05: Red Raider coming at you riding through the night for the fury of Texas win.
- 1:48SPEAKER_05: Red Raider coming at you.
- 1:50SPEAKER_05: What a beautiful time.
- 1:52SPEAKER_05: The Texas and Red Raiders riding again.
- 1:58SPEAKER_08: Absolute jam, dude.
- 2:01SPEAKER_08: I was so hyped whenever they played that.
- 2:02SPEAKER_08: I forgot, I forget if it was for the Iowa State game that they put that on or the Oklahoma State game.
- 2:07SPEAKER_08: But whenever I heard that over the intercom on TV, I was like, that is that is the song.
- 2:11SPEAKER_08: And we're gonna play that song.
- 2:12SPEAKER_08: I texted you saying we have to play the song.
- 2:15SPEAKER_04: We have to.
- 2:15SPEAKER_04: We should have played the song last week after we beat Kansas, but we really we haven't talked to y'all since we beat Baylor, actually.
- 2:23SPEAKER_04: Um that was a big, pretty big win, I'd say, over the number one team in the country at the time.
- 2:29SPEAKER_04: Uh, we beat Baylor in Waco, that was huge.
- 2:32SPEAKER_04: Uh, we did drop a game against Kansas State, uh, fourth game in seven nights.
- 2:36SPEAKER_04: And then we just go and beat the brakes off Iowa State at home, man.
- 2:39SPEAKER_04: It's been a good basketball week overall.
- 2:41SPEAKER_08: Yeah, what is with the the phrase beat the brakes off?
- 2:45SPEAKER_08: You know, I use it as well, but like I don't really understand the term.
- 2:49SPEAKER_08: Like are we removing the brakes from their vehicle?
- 2:51SPEAKER_08: Are we making it very unsafe for them to drive their bus?
- 2:55SPEAKER_04: When when you're when you're upset at somebody, you go and break into their vehicle, beat the brakes until they no longer work.
- 3:03SPEAKER_08: You're gonna be doing that from inside the vehicle.
- 3:05SPEAKER_08: I feel like you're not doing that from underneath the vehicle.
- 3:08SPEAKER_08: You gotta know how.
- 3:12SPEAKER_04: You gotta know a guy who's beaten the brakes before.
- 3:14SPEAKER_04: No, I don't I don't know.
- 3:16SPEAKER_04: I have no idea where that phrase comes from.
- 3:18SPEAKER_08: Well, this is this is a way off tap uh uh topic there, but but sir, I mean we're we're just kind of glazing over this Baylor game.
- 3:25SPEAKER_08: You're you're just like you know, it's a pretty good win, but dude, this team was number one in the nation.
- 3:28SPEAKER_08: This team was undefeated.
- 3:30SPEAKER_08: This team hadn't lost a game in what was it like a 30-game win streak or something crazy, or maybe at home at least.
- 3:38SPEAKER_08: And we went in there and just yeah, throttled.
- 3:40SPEAKER_08: No, we didn't throttle them, but we just we went ahead and snapped that whole thing, that whole deal.
- 3:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, it was a good it was a great game, it was a fantastic game.
- 3:49SPEAKER_04: Uh, I'm sorry we couldn't talk about it last week.
- 3:52SPEAKER_04: I know we previewed it uh with our good buddy Joe Goodman, and uh, you know, we had some good laughs after the game on Twitter.
- 3:59SPEAKER_04: Uh a little bit of uh a little bit of crap talking back and forth, you know, as we do after we get a big win, but um, no, it was huge.
- 4:07SPEAKER_04: Our defense was fantastic all night.
- 4:09SPEAKER_04: We got them out of their rhythm, uh, and they really we shut them down in the second half.
- 4:14SPEAKER_04: I mean, we came back from down 15 in that game, so I mean that takes uh a really gutsy effort from our dudes to uh to get that win in Waco.
- 4:24SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and mad respect to the Bears.
- 4:27SPEAKER_08: You know, it was a great game down to the wire too against two really, really great teams.
- 4:30SPEAKER_08: I mean, it's got true said it best.
- 4:32SPEAKER_08: Uh, whenever they're heading off into the halftime, like you're watching a sweet 16 game right here.
- 4:36SPEAKER_08: You know, this is these these are the two best defenses in the world fighting it out, fighting it out, and completely agree.
- 4:41SPEAKER_08: And this is what you sign up for in the butt bowl in this rivalry.
- 4:44SPEAKER_08: It's good basketball and football.
- 4:47SPEAKER_08: But uh, you know, Joe may be charming, but it's his team, his team is not is not on his level in that game.
- 4:53SPEAKER_08: So we uh we unfortunately had to make him sad there.
- 4:56SPEAKER_03: No, yeah, and then they went and dropped one to Oklahoma State after that.
- 5:00SPEAKER_03: So uh they didn't bring Baylor.
- 5:02SPEAKER_04: No, they got a good win um uh against West Virginia in Morgantown.
- 5:07SPEAKER_04: Uh they didn't have two of their good, they didn't have uh Sohan or a Kinjo, their starting guard.
- 5:12SPEAKER_04: So um, you know, they they're back on track.
- 5:15SPEAKER_04: Baylor's still a really good team.
- 5:16SPEAKER_04: There was a time, a short, short time, where everybody was like, Is Baylor really that good?
- 5:21SPEAKER_04: Yes, Baylor really is that good.
- 5:23SPEAKER_08: I was just playing.
- 5:24SPEAKER_08: I just I would just like to take credit for we're for bringing them down, but which we did, and then we get to host them at home.
- 5:30SPEAKER_08: We're gonna give we're gonna sweep the series here.
- 5:32SPEAKER_08: So just an amazing way to start off the week, it's especially coming off that Kansas game.
- 5:36SPEAKER_08: We were still riding high, or I'm glad we didn't hit a hangover in Waco, a win hangover there, but we just went in there to got business done and and it continued on.
- 5:44SPEAKER_08: So I'm just I'm just glad to see that we were able to put the string together some success.
- 5:47SPEAKER_08: We stacked success, Stephen, and that's tremendous.
- 5:50SPEAKER_04: Okay, all right, Matt Wells.
- 5:52SPEAKER_04: Thank you so much for for coming on the podcast, Matt Wells, and letting us know uh how we did in basketball.
- 5:59SPEAKER_04: But uh, no, unfortunately, after this, a tough string of games in a row, three ranked opponents to start off conference play, Iowa State with seven players, go and beat Kansas and Lubbock, and then go on the road uh to Waco and win against Baylor.
- 6:14SPEAKER_04: Then we teetered and fell to uh Kansas State and Manhattan.
- 6:19SPEAKER_04: It was our fourth game in seven days, eight days, something of that sort.
- 6:24SPEAKER_04: What we crushed Oklahoma State after Bay.
- 6:27SPEAKER_04: Oh, you're right, you're right.
- 6:28SPEAKER_04: We did.
- 6:28SPEAKER_04: We crushed Oklahoma State, so we're riding high after uh, you know, the Oklahoma State game is just like cool, business as usual, you know.
- 6:37SPEAKER_04: We win in Lovick.
- 6:39SPEAKER_04: That's why I skipped over it.
- 6:40SPEAKER_04: But um, no, we and then we we go and drop one in Manhattan, a game that we shouldn't have lost, a game that uh kind of ruined a lot of uh Texas Tech fans Saturdays, uh, because you know it was early in the morning, it was in Manhattan, it's to the current or not, I guess not current anymore, but at the time, the last place Big 12 team.
- 7:00SPEAKER_04: Um, and we just dropped the game we shouldn't have.
- 7:03SPEAKER_04: We were tired, you could tell uh that our guys just didn't have enough in them.
- 7:08SPEAKER_08: And I know you were the same way.
- 7:10SPEAKER_08: Whatever, whatever Texas Tech loses in a sport, we can't watch that sport for the rest of the day.
- 7:14SPEAKER_08: Like it's it's the TV is off if you're never leaving that spot.
- 7:18SPEAKER_08: It is illegal.
- 7:19SPEAKER_08: Um, but you it you know it's kind of becoming a cliche, but there are no easy games in the Big 12.
- 7:25SPEAKER_08: I know you're kind of brushing off Oklahoma State, but I mean, is Oklahoma State that much different than Kansas State?
- 7:30SPEAKER_08: You know, they're just they're they're both they're both, even though they're lower in on the can on the on the on the conference scale, they're both great teams.
- 7:36SPEAKER_08: You know, they'd still be really good in most other conferences.
- 7:38SPEAKER_08: It's just the the the Big 12 is so vicious that it's it's a it's not it's a big deal, but it's not like that big of a deal that a Kansas State can beat a Texas Tech, it's just that's just how good we all are, and not to mention, this is the first game that Taron Shannon Jr.
- 7:52SPEAKER_08: comes back.
- 7:53SPEAKER_08: And I know you had some concerns about that.
- 7:55SPEAKER_08: I know a lot of people had concerns about bringing a star back up into the lineup and how that messes with the chemistry and the flow of it.
- 8:00SPEAKER_08: Um, what do you think that was any would do you think there was any truth to that in that game?
- 8:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, even after this Iowa State game that we're gonna talk about here soon.
- 8:11SPEAKER_04: Um, and the Kansas State game, I mean, you could tell Terrence Shannon's still not fully, fully healthy.
- 8:17SPEAKER_04: You can tell he's not as explosive as he has been in the past.
- 8:21SPEAKER_04: You can tell he just hasn't gotten back into the flow of things, and that takes time.
- 8:25SPEAKER_04: It takes it's gonna take a couple games for him to get back into it.
- 8:28SPEAKER_04: The good news is against Iowa State, he started.
- 8:32SPEAKER_04: So, you know, Mark Adams obviously believes in him more to give him more minutes.
- 8:37SPEAKER_04: Uh, he's still a key piece to this team, uh, no doubt.
- 8:41SPEAKER_04: But you know, it's gonna take a little time for him because we had a good thing going.
- 8:45SPEAKER_04: We just beat Kansas and and Baylor without him, and now he's getting back into the mix and he needs his shots and he needs, you know, the ball and uh all sorts of stuff.
- 8:55SPEAKER_04: So um, yeah, I I think it's a natural occurrence for us to kind of fall a little bit and and our rotations a little thrown off by it, uh, especially with Adonis Arms moving back to the bench, a guy who's been playing like he's been playing great uh while Terrence Shannon was out.
- 9:13SPEAKER_04: Uh, and even that time when McCullough was out, you know, it took time to get that back into it.
- 9:17SPEAKER_04: So um, yeah, I I think the Kansas State loss was really just a combination of most of the guys being very tired after a really hard week of basketball.
- 9:30SPEAKER_04: Um, and and and credit to Kansas State too.
- 9:32SPEAKER_04: Kansas State played their butt off.
- 9:33SPEAKER_04: They were, they were, I mean, they hustled, they played great defense against us, they hit shots when they needed to down the stretch.
- 9:40SPEAKER_04: So, and that team just beat UT as well.
- 9:43SPEAKER_04: So, you know, Kansas State may be moving up from that last place position in the Big 12 to kind of more of a mid-tier rank, but uh credit to Kansas State.
- 9:51SPEAKER_04: Um, I I think if we replay that game and and we don't play our fourth game in in seven days, I think we probably get that uh yeah, it's just it's just a fact of the beast, right?
- 10:02SPEAKER_08: I mean, in college basketball, there's so many games, and sometimes there's just be long stretches, especially with this reshuffling with COVID.
- 10:08SPEAKER_08: You know, we weren't supposed to supposed to play Oklahoma State at that time, but it got pushed back.
- 10:13SPEAKER_08: So the timing was a little more bunched together.
- 10:16SPEAKER_08: Uh, but it's it's just these guys aren't machines, you know.
- 10:18SPEAKER_08: They they are human, you know.
- 10:20SPEAKER_08: The you do get tired after game after game after game.
- 10:22SPEAKER_08: It was an 11 a.m.
- 10:24SPEAKER_08: game, um, especially after a long stretch like that.
- 10:26SPEAKER_08: You don't even get to sleep in in the morning, and you got you have to get on the plane, you have to fly to Kansas, you have to get up and play a basketball game in the toughest league in the country.
- 10:33SPEAKER_08: So, I mean, it was a bad loss.
- 10:36SPEAKER_08: We should have won that game, but in the Big 12, it's gonna happen.
- 10:39SPEAKER_08: So, and I'm glad that we showed that it's just hey, we just needed a breath.
- 10:43SPEAKER_08: Because whenever we had that breath, we got back home on the the toughest home court in the country.
- 10:48SPEAKER_08: We took care of business, no questions asked.
- 10:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 10:54SPEAKER_04: Um, I mean, you know, I I would have liked to see Adams go a little deeper in the rotation this game.
- 11:00SPEAKER_04: I would have liked to see him say, hey, you know, we have a lot of guys that played a lot of minutes in these in this past week.
- 11:06SPEAKER_04: Maybe we'll get Buzo out there a little bit, maybe we'll get Malik Wilson a few more minutes, maybe we'll see some KJ Allen, maybe a few more minutes for Bacho.
- 11:14SPEAKER_04: I would have liked to see that in that Kansas State game because I still think those guys can lead to winning, uh, even though I think Kansas State's a very good team.
- 11:22SPEAKER_04: But um, you know, I I think that might have been a mistake um from Coach Adams there.
- 11:28SPEAKER_04: But, you know, it's it's gone, it's out the window.
- 11:30SPEAKER_04: Uh, and then we moved on and we and we got a huge dub here uh against Iowa State.
- 11:35SPEAKER_04: So obviously we moved on from that loss.
- 11:38SPEAKER_08: Hey, hey, and and watching Baylor drop their game against Oklahoma State after that helped us take the sting out a little bit because we're in we are in that Big 12 hunt, man.
- 11:48SPEAKER_08: That trophy hope is still alive and we we are still kicking.
- 11:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we're sitting at four and two in conference right now, uh just behind Baylor, or no, uh just behind Kansas.
- 11:59SPEAKER_04: Uh they're sitting, I believe, at four and five and one, I think.
- 12:03SPEAKER_04: Um so you know, Kansas, Kansas is Kansas, they're very good.
- 12:08SPEAKER_04: Um, they have a lot of tough games.
- 12:10SPEAKER_04: We have a lot of tough games.
- 12:11SPEAKER_04: The Big 12 race is far from over right now.
- 12:15SPEAKER_04: It's it's really hard to say who's gonna win.
- 12:18SPEAKER_04: Um, and you still have teams in the mid-tier like Oklahoma, uh West Virginia that we have coming up here soon on Saturday.
- 12:26SPEAKER_04: It's just a grind, dude.
- 12:28SPEAKER_04: And all these games are a fight and a battle, like what all the Big 12 coaches say, it's an 18-round fight, and uh we got to take it game by game.
- 12:39SPEAKER_08: I just wish every game could be played at home.
- 12:41SPEAKER_08: I mean, whenever we see how we play in in the USA compared to on the road, not saying we don't take care of business on the road, but geez, well, we're at home.
- 12:49SPEAKER_08: It's just you really never get that nervous because you just know that the crowd is in there behind you, and our team just just is just different at home.
- 12:57SPEAKER_08: And they really lock down that importance of winning at home in college basketball.
- 13:01SPEAKER_08: I don't think there's a time a sport more important of getting those home wins than in college basketball.
- 13:06SPEAKER_08: So I'm glad we've really turned that into just an absolute fortress to walk into.
- 13:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I don't get nearly as nervous when we're playing a game in Lovick.
- 13:14SPEAKER_04: I I just don't.
- 13:15SPEAKER_04: Um, and that happened with this Iowa State game.
- 13:19SPEAKER_04: Um, we win 72 to 60.
- 13:22SPEAKER_04: It was a massive win for us.
- 13:24SPEAKER_04: Uh, we completely dominated the second half.
- 13:27SPEAKER_04: Um, a lot of good things, great defensive effort, and and it's been a great defensive effort all season long for this team.
- 13:34SPEAKER_04: Um, but really shutting down Iowa State in a lot of different ways.
- 13:39SPEAKER_04: Uh Brockington, who is their lead guy, I mean, main scorer.
- 13:43SPEAKER_04: Um, he's been really effective for the Cyclones this year, and we completely took him out of it.
- 13:48SPEAKER_04: Uh, their point guard, too, number 11.
- 13:50SPEAKER_04: I can't, his name escapes me right now, but took him completely out of the game.
- 13:54SPEAKER_04: Um, and then we we did enough on the offensive end, uh, especially in that second half, to really make it work.
- 14:00SPEAKER_08: I mean, what was really cool about this game is this was the first repeat Big 12 game we got of the year of the season of the matchup.
- 14:06SPEAKER_08: And I remember after we lost to Iowa State Ames, uh, we were missing some of our key players.
- 14:11SPEAKER_08: You know, that was definitely our most beat-up game we played all season.
- 14:15SPEAKER_08: And I remember after that game, you know, it was it was close.
- 14:18SPEAKER_08: I mean, they they pulled away at the very end to make the score look, you know, as a bigger gap than it actually was uh in the game.
- 14:24SPEAKER_08: But you know, we knew we we said after that game that if we were a healthy team, we'd probably win this game eight times out of ten.
- 14:32SPEAKER_08: And it comes to it shows here we are winning that eight times out of ten at home because we we really kind of just started slamming on the gas pedal once we we once we made some space, we just added to that space, and it just shows that we were the better team all along.
- 14:46SPEAKER_08: Um, but I'm glad we at least got to split the series.
- 14:49SPEAKER_08: But I it's just it's good to see us reaffirm that even whenever we drop a game, we know that we're better than that.
- 14:54SPEAKER_08: We can just turn around and get it next time, yeah.
- 14:57SPEAKER_04: And you know, side note a lot of these teams in the Big 12 have played teams that have had injuries and uh players out.
- 15:05SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech hasn't Texas Tech has played almost every team at full strength.
- 15:09SPEAKER_04: The I think the only significant player that has missed a game in in the Big 12 against Texas Tech is uh Sohan on Baylor, but he's missed the last few.
- 15:19SPEAKER_04: But other than that, I mean Kansas was at full strength, Kansas State for the first time in Big 12 play was at full strength in their game against us.
- 15:28SPEAKER_04: Iowa State's been at full strength both games against tech.
- 15:31SPEAKER_04: I mean, we've we've gotten a little unlucky with this COVID stuff, and uh the other teams that seem to play tech haven't.
- 15:39SPEAKER_08: What the heck?
- 15:40SPEAKER_08: I mean, we were yeah, we're there, everybody's getting this this beat up tech, but it don't matter, we'll still get the dub.
- 15:46SPEAKER_08: But uh that's that's an interesting point.
- 15:48SPEAKER_08: Uh and maybe makes us a better team on the at the end of the day because we we go up against this talent all the time, so we know what it looks like.
- 15:55SPEAKER_08: But you know, I do like I do like easier wins.
- 15:57SPEAKER_08: I do like to take those.
- 15:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, I like having a full roster, but yeah, um, but but I think to your point here, I think it's it's good for certain players like Adonis Arms, who maybe wouldn't have seen the minutes and gotten the confidence that he has had over these last few games if Terrence Shannon was in the lineup, or maybe Davion Warden wouldn't have played as hard if Kevin McCullough didn't sit for the Clarence Nedolney's a good example of a guy who came on when when McCullough was missing.
- 16:24SPEAKER_04: And so uh, you know, that's gonna help later in the season when potentially, and you know, knock on wood here, but you know, we see another injury to one of our key players, and we need another guy to step into that role, and you know, I think this will be good experience for that player to potentially do that.
- 16:41SPEAKER_04: So, um, you know, it may be a blessing in disguise.
- 16:43SPEAKER_04: I think we've we've avoided uh what could have been a really, really rough stretch for us by I mean, just blowing out expectations, beating a Kansas, beating a Baylor, beating an Iowa State here, three ranked teams and highly ranked teams, I should say, without some of our best players.
- 17:04SPEAKER_08: That's an excellent point.
- 17:06SPEAKER_08: And it just it really shows the depth.
- 17:07SPEAKER_08: And I like that you sit sat there and spoke about the depth depth about how you know all these guys are getting some experience built because I would much rather have a team full of experienced dudes that know what they're doing than just a few stars and just a few superstars.
- 17:20SPEAKER_08: So I'll take that kind of team any day.
- 17:21SPEAKER_08: And I'm glad that we're building that.
- 17:23SPEAKER_08: I'm glad we have that in Lubbock.
- 17:24SPEAKER_08: It's the Mark Adams effect, man.
- 17:26SPEAKER_08: It's like none of these kids are missing around, they're going out there and fighting for every minute.
- 17:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
- 17:31SPEAKER_04: Um, but back to Iowa State.
- 17:33SPEAKER_04: Terrence Shannon back in the starting five, that was huge.
- 17:36SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, it it really means that he's back and he's ready to stay, and he's getting more more uh minutes and better affiliated with Kevin McCullough, with Kevin playing with Kevin O'Bannor, playing with Bryson Williams, playing with guys that uh, you know, need the ball as well to produce.
- 17:53SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, Terrence Shannon is uh our best NBA prospect.
- 17:58SPEAKER_04: He has been our best offensive weapon in the past.
- 18:01SPEAKER_04: Uh, but you know, we've seen that other guys can step up in that role.
- 18:04SPEAKER_04: But um, you know, Terrence only scored four points in this Iowa State game, but uh, I think he kind of got it going a little better as the game progressed.
- 18:13SPEAKER_04: Um, I do want to point out that that play at the end of the half there, where uh Shannon made a lot of bad plays in a row.
- 18:20SPEAKER_04: He got a couple fouls uh that were just stupid.
- 18:23SPEAKER_04: Uh bad plays by him.
- 18:25SPEAKER_04: He kind of struggled uh moving the ball in the in the flow of the offense a little bit.
- 18:31SPEAKER_04: And uh Mark Adams said, We we got the ball with 17 seconds left, called the timeout, and said, Our guy Terrence Shannon needs a bucket here.
- 18:39SPEAKER_04: Let's run a play for him to get his and get an opportunity to score to get his confidence level up.
- 18:46SPEAKER_04: And they did exactly that.
- 18:47SPEAKER_04: And Terrence Shannon made a great move, great drive.
- 18:49SPEAKER_04: He looked like the old Terrence Shannon, uh, made the layup there at the end of the half uh to put us up, I believe, by four.
- 18:56SPEAKER_04: But uh just that that kind of stuff from Mark Adams and and even Barrett Peary, who's taken a big role uh uh on the offense of this team, uh, that's just the good stuff.
- 19:07SPEAKER_04: That's stuff you love to see from your basketball coach.
- 19:10SPEAKER_08: Yeah, excellent point.
- 19:11SPEAKER_08: And I remember that play vividly, and we needed that bad because we were reeling, like Iowa State was was putting it on us there at the uh at the end of that half.
- 19:18SPEAKER_08: And uh, we were it looked like they're about to just take the momentum completely going into the half, and that's obviously never good.
- 19:24SPEAKER_08: And just to think, just to have your star player, the guy that everybody knows to go out there and do what leaders do uh off the backs of your coaches, it's great.
- 19:32SPEAKER_08: It's just a great basketball team to watch, and that's why those are the ones that make it far, those are the ones that make a big difference, and uh it's just every single week.
- 19:39SPEAKER_08: I feel like we have just more and more reason to believe in this team.
- 19:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, absolutely agreed 100%.
- 19:45SPEAKER_04: Um, another thing in this game, uh, Bryson Williams has all of a sudden become our most consistent offensive piece.
- 19:51SPEAKER_04: Um, ever since the podcast of you and me just absolutely um not crapping on him, but definitely criticizing his production from this team.
- 20:03SPEAKER_04: He has been on an absolute tear since Big 12 play started.
- 20:06SPEAKER_04: I mean, he carried us in that Kansas game.
- 20:08SPEAKER_04: He played great in the in every game since on the offensive side of the floor.
- 20:13SPEAKER_04: Sometimes when we need a bucket, we just give that ball to Bryson and he goes to the he goes to the rim and gets fouled, knocks down a couple free throws, or he makes a great play down low, gets a dunk, uh jump shot.
- 20:24SPEAKER_04: He can do pretty he's making a lot of three-pointers.
- 20:26SPEAKER_04: I mean, Bryson Williams has been amazing on the offensive end.
- 20:31SPEAKER_08: Absolutely.
- 20:31SPEAKER_08: He we were only as close to the to against Kansas State because of Bryson Williams.
- 20:38SPEAKER_08: The guy was playing out of his mind against Kansas State, he was single-handedly carrying us in that game, and it's it's shown progressively between the games.
- 20:46SPEAKER_08: He can he's like you said, he's a consistent scorer now.
- 20:49SPEAKER_08: He's actually hitting him from across the line now again.
- 20:51SPEAKER_08: Uh, for a while there, any three he put up was just not going in.
- 20:55SPEAKER_08: But now we're starting to see some drop in.
- 20:57SPEAKER_08: It's it's great to see.
- 20:58SPEAKER_08: Uh, he's the guy that we recruited to do this, you know.
- 21:00SPEAKER_08: He was such such a valuable guy in the portal, and that we we were so pumped to win him over, and he's really showing why he was so desired.
- 21:06SPEAKER_08: And it's it's great to see him embrace Lubbock, embrace the atmosphere, embrace the culture because he's finally turning it on.
- 21:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, they had an interview with uh Darby Rich, who is the new strength uh and conditioning coach for the basketball team.
- 21:18SPEAKER_04: And he said Bryson Williams is the hardest worker in that gym, in that locker room.
- 21:23SPEAKER_04: Uh, and you can tell because he doesn't waver.
- 21:25SPEAKER_04: I mean, he's not tired uh during these games.
- 21:28SPEAKER_04: He works his absolute butt off and he's out there rebounding, hustling, trying to make things work uh all throughout the game.
- 21:36SPEAKER_04: And he has really found his niche in this team.
- 21:39SPEAKER_04: Uh, and we're we're giving the ball to him down low.
- 21:42SPEAKER_04: I mean, we're making our offense work through him uh a lot of the time, and that's that's just really nice to see uh from a guy who struggled, quite frankly, early on in the season.
- 21:53SPEAKER_08: Yeah, that that interview was awesome.
- 21:55SPEAKER_08: You're talking about the one where they went into the womble, right?
- 21:57SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:58SPEAKER_08: And just that just an amazing.
- 22:00SPEAKER_08: Amazing video if you all haven't seen that.
- 22:02SPEAKER_08: Um great point.
- 22:04SPEAKER_08: It kind of shows that he's also he's an athletic freak.
- 22:07SPEAKER_08: So that time in the gym is definitely helping him out because that guy can move, and like you said, his endurance is insane.
- 22:12SPEAKER_08: He never looks like he's tired.
- 22:13SPEAKER_08: Um, and like like you just said, man, I'm just I'm glad to see that we don't have to bag on him anymore because we hated bagging on him, you know.
- 22:20SPEAKER_08: For sure.
- 22:20SPEAKER_08: Whatever you need to be bagged on, you need to be bagged on, you know.
- 22:23SPEAKER_08: So it's if you're not living up to expectations, he knows it, we know it.
- 22:26SPEAKER_08: So it's just we're glad to see him meeting those again and exceeding them, is all.
- 22:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
- 22:32SPEAKER_04: Bryson's been awesome.
- 22:33SPEAKER_04: Hope he keeps it up.
- 22:34SPEAKER_04: Uh, because we we absolutely need him.
- 22:36SPEAKER_04: So I did want to highlight one more guy, and that was Kevin O'Banner.
- 22:41SPEAKER_04: Kevin O'Banner has been very it's been it's been a wild ride with Kevin O'Banner this year because he's he's not necessarily knocking down the the three-pointers, he's not uh shooting like we thought he was going to.
- 22:55SPEAKER_04: I mean, this was a guy who was averaging about 46-45 percent from the three-point line last season.
- 23:01SPEAKER_04: Uh I mean, playing for Orl Roberts, so he played much weaker competition, was probably getting more open looks and everything like that.
- 23:07SPEAKER_04: But he comes in here and he's just, I mean, he's getting good shots, he's just missing them.
- 23:12SPEAKER_04: And for him to play the way that he did against Iowa State, finding a way to be productive while still while not making his threes was unbelievable to see.
- 23:24SPEAKER_04: It's a guy that believes in the culture and believes in trying to find different ways to make your team win.
- 23:31SPEAKER_04: Uh, and that was through the offensive boards and the putbacks this game.
- 23:35SPEAKER_08: It's kind of funny with Kevin O'Banner.
- 23:37SPEAKER_08: Yeah, everyone just kind of goes through this aha moment of oh, this guy's more than just his shot.
- 23:42SPEAKER_08: Because you you watch how sneaky this guy is at finishing the ball.
- 23:47SPEAKER_08: He can get some tricky layups, and the guy can rebound.
- 23:51SPEAKER_08: Like he it's really he's really developed his post moves down there.
- 23:54SPEAKER_08: It's really impressive to see because this whole time I was thinking this guy was just like a sniper, he's just trying to, he's just an offensive machine, but no, he he can get it off the glass, he can put it in up the glass and he can get the ball off the glass.
- 24:04SPEAKER_08: It's just it's great to see to see that kind of reliability.
- 24:09SPEAKER_08: He's really reliable down there, and that's so great to have a consistent scorer or rebounder in that sense.
- 24:14SPEAKER_08: And he's he's delivered.
- 24:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, you can you can always make it work if you're rebounding in these hustle plays.
- 24:20SPEAKER_04: Uh, he got five offensive rebounds in this game, and and a lot of them were at huge moments when we really needed a bucket.
- 24:26SPEAKER_04: Uh, and the shot just wasn't following falling for McCullough or for uh Davion or for Bryson.
- 24:32SPEAKER_04: Maybe he missed one.
- 24:33SPEAKER_04: And and O'Banner was always there to clean up the boards.
- 24:36SPEAKER_04: Uh, and he got a huge and one that just hyped up everybody there in the second half.
- 24:40SPEAKER_04: Um, he's he's he's finding ways to be productive without making that three-point shot that he's known for.
- 24:46SPEAKER_04: So uh shouts out Kevin O'Banner.
- 24:48SPEAKER_04: He has been fantastic to watch this year.
- 24:50SPEAKER_04: And by the way, I still trust that three-point shot more than anybody on this team.
- 24:55SPEAKER_04: I know, I know he's not shooting very well right now, but as soon as he shoots, I'm happy.
- 24:59SPEAKER_04: I don't care.
- 25:00SPEAKER_08: I'm no one is lik seeing you go into his shooting motion than anyone else.
- 25:07SPEAKER_08: You anytime he even pulls the ball up into his hands, you're excited about it.
- 25:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm like, I don't care.
- 25:12SPEAKER_04: It's probably uh like I know he's he's shooting about like a low 30s percent from the three, but uh if it's the end of the game and you're down three, you need a three-pointer.
- 25:21SPEAKER_04: I want Kevin O'Banner shooting that shot.
- 25:24SPEAKER_04: I'm on board with it.
- 25:27SPEAKER_04: I had one more thing on the Iowa State game, and it's uh it's a small thing, but it's something that needs to be said.
- 25:33SPEAKER_04: Uh, Jazz Koontz is a dork, he's the biggest dork in college basketball.
- 25:39SPEAKER_04: I hate that guy.
- 25:40SPEAKER_04: It's like I I know he probably he's probably a really sweet kid or whatever.
- 25:45SPEAKER_04: I hate his face, I hate his haircut.
- 25:47SPEAKER_04: Sweet, he's sweet, he's sweet kid, sweet kid.
- 25:51SPEAKER_04: Um in in this past game, he picked up five fouls in eight minutes of action, and that was just sweet relief for me because he played so good in that first game when we only had seven guys, made some stupid threes that he should not have made, and he and he goes into this game, fouls out in eight minutes of action.
- 26:11SPEAKER_04: He's such a dork, and I hate him.
- 26:15SPEAKER_08: You're gonna make Cyclone Larry mad at you.
- 26:16SPEAKER_08: You're ripping ripping on his dudes here.
- 26:18SPEAKER_08: I mean, I know I like this, but he's a sweet kid though, so I'm not gonna go hard on him.
- 26:25SPEAKER_08: And well, my last thought on this game is just what an amazing crowd.
- 26:28SPEAKER_08: USA is rocking as always.
- 26:29SPEAKER_08: I'm just I'm so impressed every time I turn on the TV and see this crowd filled up to the brim, especially the students, because they're the ones that really make the atmosphere.
- 26:36SPEAKER_08: And I'm just so proud to be an alumni of that squad.
- 26:40SPEAKER_04: I'm impressed every time I open up Twitter and I see two hours before game time, the line is back by the rec center from the USA.
- 26:48SPEAKER_04: That's just Texas Tech, baby.
- 26:50SPEAKER_04: That's what we've built, and that's what we're about.
- 26:52SPEAKER_04: We show up.
- 26:54SPEAKER_08: The culture Mark Adams built, and it all started with Tubby Smith.
- 26:58SPEAKER_04: Okay, it's where it started.
- 27:00SPEAKER_04: It did.
- 27:01SPEAKER_04: He deserves his respect, Tubby Smith.
- 27:04SPEAKER_04: Um I I wanna, I wanna, I wanna move on uh because this is a huge win.
- 27:09SPEAKER_04: We have some stuff uh ahead that we'll get to towards the end of this pod.
- 27:13SPEAKER_04: But um, you know, if you're on Twitter, if you're uh involved with other tech podcasts, you saw that um uh known Texas Tech uh quote unquote hater, Jeff Goodman, decided to hop on with the gambling gauchos podcast, um, and kind of talked about Texas Tech because you know the guy has been an obvious Chris Beard, you know, he he likes Chris Beard.
- 27:40SPEAKER_04: He thought Texas Tech wasn't gonna do well after Beard left, and he was the main guy that was saying all this kind of stuff.
- 27:48SPEAKER_04: Um, but he hopped on with the gambling gauchos and kind of you know showed us what he really thought that's not on Twitter, you know, because Twitter simplifies things, and you don't really get your entire thought process out there with this kind of stuff.
- 28:05SPEAKER_04: And um, I I was it was really cool to him, first off, to hop on with a with a Texas Tech podcast, a local show, um, and and just kind of reiterate what he's trying to say about Texas Tech.
- 28:18SPEAKER_04: And he's actually walked back a lot of those opinions uh that he put out on Twitter earlier in the season.
- 28:24SPEAKER_08: Yeah, no, man.
- 28:25SPEAKER_08: Matter of respect to just hop on a uh uh I mean, not not to rip on the gauchas.
- 28:29SPEAKER_08: I mean, we're the same way with a a lower-known podcast.
- 28:32SPEAKER_08: It's not like he's hopping on like a major CBS, ESPN podcast or anything.
- 28:37SPEAKER_08: It's just cool for him to hop on a fan-oriented podcast like that and it just got kind of get real with those guys.
- 28:44SPEAKER_08: And you know, I like I like the tweet you made about.
- 28:46SPEAKER_08: I I respect that he stuck by his opinions and then just kind of just step off as soon as you know he was talking to people, just kind of make whoever he was talking to happy about it.
- 28:55SPEAKER_08: I'm glad he stuck to his guns.
- 28:56SPEAKER_08: Um, but just seriously, mad props are expect to just hop on it.
- 28:59SPEAKER_08: I we'll always give him crap, but good for him, dude.
- 29:02SPEAKER_08: That's it's it's such such a cool thing if that uh thing for him to do.
- 29:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 29:08SPEAKER_04: And I think this this whole week has kind of shown a little national perception change of what Texas Tech is to college basketball, and not so much Chris Beard's team, but more so this Texas Tech team is a contender and not just a lowly Big 12 team because Chris Beard left.
- 29:32SPEAKER_04: We're a contender and we're here to stay.
- 29:35SPEAKER_04: We're seeing podcasts and outlets based on national outlets out talking about Texas Tech.
- 29:42SPEAKER_04: We're now ranked 18.
- 29:44SPEAKER_04: We should be higher, we're going to be higher if we get a good win against West Virginia here.
- 29:48SPEAKER_04: But we're they're starting to take notice of what Texas Tech and Mark Adams is all about.
- 29:52SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we we've proven we're not going anywhere.
- 29:55SPEAKER_08: And we we it was such a brilliant move from Kirby Hokart to just promote Mark Adams up into the head coaching position because he knew he knew that's where the culture was, that's what we've been building on top of.
- 30:05SPEAKER_08: And for us to just keep running with it has shown the country that this we're not just some middling uh little brother program in the state of Texas that sometimes plays basketball decently.
- 30:16SPEAKER_08: No, we we put together something special out of Lovick.
- 30:19SPEAKER_08: We we're we're here to build turn ourselves into a new power, and we're we're here to compete every single year.
- 30:25SPEAKER_08: We want our expectation has become we expect to go to the tournament every single year now, and that's just a complete 180 from every you and I first went into school under the Tubby Smith years, and we first started seeing our first tournaments in years, so it's just it's so great to see it, and it's just nice seeing us get the respect because schools like Texas Tech, we're not a powerhouse in anything, so people don't like to give us respect very often, you know, they don't like to talk about us, they like to talk about the big names.
- 30:50SPEAKER_08: Um, and it's not very often we get this kind of attention, and I we gotta soak it up, we gotta own it, and we gotta just keep being who we are.
- 30:56SPEAKER_08: We just gotta keep pounding the rock.
- 30:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, I kind of argue that we're we are looked at as a powerhouse in baseball these days, uh, from the national perspective.
- 31:05SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry, but but but yeah, no, I I get what you're saying about football and basketball for sure.
- 31:10SPEAKER_04: We're not looked at upon, and we don't have that history, you know, we just don't, and that's fine, but you know, it's not all about the history, just because you won uh multiple national championships 40 years ago, you know, it doesn't mean that's what your school is now.
- 31:24SPEAKER_04: And so we've made a national title game recently.
- 31:26SPEAKER_04: We have we are competing for a Big 12 championship this year when nobody in the world except for Texas Tech fans thought we could do it, and so I'm just glad we're proving people wrong.
- 31:37SPEAKER_04: It was really cool.
- 31:38SPEAKER_04: I I hopped on with a uh with a different podcast um this past week uh called Beers and Buckets.
- 31:44SPEAKER_04: It's a good great podcast.
- 31:45SPEAKER_04: Go check it out if you haven't yet.
- 31:47SPEAKER_04: Uh, those guys do a great job over there.
- 31:49SPEAKER_04: And it's it's it's run by two Kentucky fans, you know, to not wouldn't be watching a lot of Texas Tech games, but for them to reach out to us and ask us to be on it, you know, it really shows kind of the national relevance that our school uh and our basketball team has on the rest of the college basketball sphere.
- 32:10SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 32:10SPEAKER_08: I it it's so great to see that kind of starting to pour in.
- 32:13SPEAKER_08: And there's something fun about the new exciting team, you know, like we were kind of new to this, so that's fun.
- 32:21SPEAKER_08: Everyone likes that, everyone has fun with that because we're kind of still in that underdog territory, but we're still proven success story.
- 32:28SPEAKER_08: So it's it's great to see that starting to take notice.
- 32:31SPEAKER_08: Um, and something to kind of consider is what why are we still getting crap about being in Lubbock?
- 32:40SPEAKER_08: You know, like I I hope that isn't too much of a shift, but that's still something we still get crap for because everyone's like, it's so surprising they're so good because they're in Lubbock, and I just I cannot get over it.
- 32:51SPEAKER_08: And it I don't know why Lubbock is the one town, seemingly the only town in the entire country that gets pointed out as a hindrance on Texas Tech.
- 33:01SPEAKER_08: I don't get it.
- 33:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it it doesn't make sense, it it doesn't.
- 33:06SPEAKER_04: I mean, uh, if you're still thinking about cities that are or college towns, I should say, as a hindrance on your recruiting base, and that's what Jeff Goodman went on.
- 33:17SPEAKER_04: Uh the gauchos and and talked about was that Lubbock isn't a good recruiting base.
- 33:22SPEAKER_04: Well, guy, recruiting uh is so widespread these days, like it's not it, it's easy to take a flight to Lubbock, Texas.
- 33:33SPEAKER_04: It's the same thing you have to do with Ames and with Morgantown and with Stillwater and with Waco.
- 33:41SPEAKER_04: You have to take a flight to a bigger city around it, and then guess what?
- 33:45SPEAKER_04: Lubbock has a freaking international airport, so you just take another flight out there.
- 33:49SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's not like you're driving to all these places away, 10 minutes away from the campus.
- 33:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's not like Texas is making the recruits from San Antonio and and Dallas and Houston drive to Lubbock.
- 34:02SPEAKER_04: No, they're taking a flight, and from those cities, it's just one.
- 34:06SPEAKER_04: I know from Boston it's gonna take a couple, Jeff, but from the major hubs of recruiting in the Texas area, it's a one-flight stop, dude.
- 34:18SPEAKER_08: I it's I I don't understand.
- 34:20SPEAKER_08: I think it's mostly the isolation of Lubbock, but whenever you look at college towns, a lot of them are in quotation marks, isolated because I mean, you look at Tuscaloosa, the the closest major metro is either Atlanta or Nashville.
- 34:36SPEAKER_08: Birmingham's not that big, it's not exactly a rich rooting ground or recruiting ground.
- 34:40SPEAKER_08: So why why isn't a place like Tuscaloosa getting crap?
- 34:43SPEAKER_08: Like people aren't like, wow, Alabama's so good, but they're in Tuscaloosa.
- 34:47SPEAKER_08: You know, it's just I don't get why Texas Tech is is gets all the crap for it.
- 34:54SPEAKER_08: I I just have a hard time.
- 34:55SPEAKER_08: I think it's people that I think it's just a lazy take.
- 34:57SPEAKER_08: I think we'll just want to use it because it's it's the common phrasage, it's just it's been said so many times that it's just stuck in people's brains, and they just they they can't think of any other reason to rip on Texas Tech.
- 35:09SPEAKER_08: But you know, is Lawrence, Kansas, this destination place, you know, is Manhattan this destination place, is Waco this destination place?
- 35:16SPEAKER_08: I can go on and on and on.
- 35:17SPEAKER_08: All those places places that have hosted solid programs, and I just I it it it twists my panties, is all I'm saying.
- 35:25SPEAKER_08: I am salty, as they would say.
- 35:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, uh, it's just gonna take time, it's gonna take, like a lot of people have said over social media, it's gonna take these um national media people to they just have to get to Lubbock, they need to go see the womble, they need to go engage with the Texas Tech basketball game and see how freaking crazy this fan base is about this team.
- 35:47SPEAKER_04: And notice that Lubbock is a freaking city of 220 plus thousand people.
- 35:53SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's just I mean, it's bigger than almost all the other college towns, it really is.
- 35:59SPEAKER_04: When you're just comparing college towns population-wise, I mean, these people of West Texas absolutely care about this program and this team, yeah, and you do not get that very often.
- 36:11SPEAKER_08: No, no, the whole city is bought into it, like the the Lubbock, Texas revolves around Texas Tech, and that's what's so great about it.
- 36:18SPEAKER_08: And West Texas in general, it's kind of this sphere that buys into Texas Tech because it's just I love that we we represent ourselves as West Texas's team, you know, we're true to what we are, and I think that's a part of the charm of the program.
- 36:31SPEAKER_08: But I think that's something you should play up, that's something you should own because not very many teams can do that, not very many teams can just own a region and say that this is our region.
- 36:39SPEAKER_08: It's just I love that we do that so hard.
- 36:41SPEAKER_08: And uh, I like you said, we need the media personnel to get out there and see it.
- 36:46SPEAKER_08: They need to see how beautiful our campus is and how amazing our facilities are because tech doesn't play around.
- 36:52SPEAKER_08: We don't take a backseat to anybody.
- 36:54SPEAKER_04: Yep, no doubt, no doubt.
- 36:56SPEAKER_04: And it's showing, it's showing you get the right guys in there, you get the guys to buy in, you get a coach that is 1000% bought in, probably the coach that is the most bought in of all coaches at this point, uh, in Mark Adams.
- 37:09SPEAKER_08: Um, to the culture of the yeah, he's he's rejected a presidential bid, so yeah, he did.
- 37:14SPEAKER_08: He's he's he, yeah, so he did he doesn't want to be president.
- 37:19SPEAKER_04: He's he's the guy who thinks being the head men's basketball coach at Texas Tech is better than being the United States president.
- 37:26SPEAKER_04: And what a I I agree with him.
- 37:28SPEAKER_04: That I would agree as well.
- 37:31SPEAKER_07: I mean, I not as much stress, you know.
- 37:33SPEAKER_07: It's people love you, they don't hate you.
- 37:36SPEAKER_07: So it's you don't have people that would literally want to kill you.
- 37:39SPEAKER_07: It's just it's it's nice, you know, it's a little nicer of a gig.
- 37:43SPEAKER_04: No doubt, no doubt.
- 37:45SPEAKER_04: Um, I wanted to move on to one more basketball point.
- 37:48SPEAKER_04: Um, and that it's been a it's been a nice movement to see today.
- 37:52SPEAKER_04: Um we are we're taking over this game in Austin.
- 37:58SPEAKER_04: This uh this game on February 19th against the Longhorns in Austin.
- 38:03SPEAKER_04: Uh somebody, uh, I don't know who exactly um leaked out a season ticket code for Longhorn fans to use to buy tickets to this game against Texas Tech.
- 38:18SPEAKER_04: And and I think it was to to buy just basketball tickets in general for the Longhorns.
- 38:24SPEAKER_04: And uh some Texas Tech fan got a hold of it, leaked it out, and it's been all over Twitter.
- 38:29SPEAKER_04: Um, and and Texas Tech fans have been using this code to buy their ticket for the UT Texas Tech game coming up in Austin on the 19th of February, and uh that's it's just been glorious, it's been wonderful to see, and they are sold out.
- 38:48SPEAKER_04: Either they're sold out or they stopped selling them because they were selling too many.
- 38:54SPEAKER_04: The long lords no longer can sell tickets using that code.
- 39:00SPEAKER_08: And I I feel like the the conversation went like this in the concrete flannel.
- 39:05SPEAKER_08: One of the ticket guys was like, Chris, you're not gonna believe it, man.
- 39:08SPEAKER_07: The Text Tech game is gonna be sold out, you're gonna have an amazing atmosphere.
- 39:11SPEAKER_07: And Chris was like, What did you just say?
- 39:13SPEAKER_07: You what?
- 39:15SPEAKER_08: Just like ran into the office and like threw every good computer on the ground and yanked every server related to selling that game.
- 39:24SPEAKER_08: Because I bet that's probably more so what it was because don't get me wrong, this would be sold out within the next few days for tech fans, but like I I think they shut it down.
- 39:34SPEAKER_08: I don't think it's sold out because I think it would have said like sold out or something like that.
- 39:38SPEAKER_08: It just I don't think they were just giving people the options.
- 39:41SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech fans are relentless when it comes to showing up to this game, and that is the best thing ever.
- 39:48SPEAKER_04: That is the best thing ever.
- 39:50SPEAKER_04: I mean, we bought our tickets a while ago, uh, for this game, and we already planned on going to this one.
- 39:55SPEAKER_04: But for the people that saw this code and said, F it, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go, and we're gonna red out this freaking stadium because this is gonna be the last game ever in the concrete flan known as the Frank Irwin Center, um, because they are getting a new facility come next season.
- 40:13SPEAKER_04: So, this is gonna be the last game ever between Texas Tech and Texas in basketball in this arena.
- 40:19SPEAKER_04: So, how freaking funny would it be for more than 50% of those fans in that stadium for that game to be supporting the red and black and Texas Tech?
- 40:33SPEAKER_08: I it's it's phenomenal, and they chickened out of it last year.
- 40:37SPEAKER_08: Remember last year, brilliant game last year at Texas with the Mac McClung near Buzzerbeater.
- 40:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah, but it they I remember it really did feel like UT thought Texas Tech was gonna out show their fans, and they're like, Oh, it's COVID just for this game.
- 40:51SPEAKER_08: This game only COVID.
- 40:53SPEAKER_08: So I really feel like we're gonna go back you with some revenge.
- 40:57SPEAKER_08: Like, now you really have to let us in.
- 40:59SPEAKER_08: You can't chicken out of it this time.
- 41:00SPEAKER_08: We'll wear our masks, whatever you want us to do.
- 41:03SPEAKER_08: We're in, we're going in though.
- 41:04SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and we're gonna be there.
- 41:06SPEAKER_08: Phenomenal to see.
- 41:06SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we're gonna be there.
- 41:07SPEAKER_08: I'm so excited to be there.
- 41:08SPEAKER_08: So whenever y'all spot us, please say hey, and uh maybe we all grab a beer with each other after the game because we'll be celebrating.
- 41:15SPEAKER_04: Yes, please.
- 41:16SPEAKER_04: Everybody let us know if you are going to be in Austin that weekend, what bars we need to go to after we uh kick Beard's ass that game and where we're gonna celebrate, whether it be on Rainy, on six, or anywhere in Austin, let us know.
- 41:30SPEAKER_04: Uh, and just it just let us know so we can let the people know on Twitter.
- 41:35SPEAKER_04: Please, we want everybody to show up and show out for this game because uh we want it to be basically a Texas Tech Home game, and that's what I think it's gonna be.
- 41:45SPEAKER_08: I I love it, man.
- 41:46SPEAKER_08: And is UT still ranked, right?
- 41:49SPEAKER_04: Uh they are, but they lost uh to Kansas State since then, so they'll they'll be out of the top 25.
- 41:54SPEAKER_08: Uh so their fan support has been ugly, it's been abysmal.
- 42:00SPEAKER_08: Like that that picture of the Kansas State game, that the that that arena was empty and they were still ranked, like their their fan support is pathetic.
- 42:08SPEAKER_08: You know, I don't know, I don't like to just sit here and target fan bases.
- 42:13SPEAKER_08: Um, but dude, it's bad.
- 42:15SPEAKER_08: It's so bad.
- 42:16SPEAKER_08: And I love how bad it is.
- 42:17SPEAKER_08: It really feels like a one sport town.
- 42:19SPEAKER_04: They truly don't care about their basketball team.
- 42:22SPEAKER_04: They don't, they never have, they really never have.
- 42:24SPEAKER_04: I mean, they they they just don't, and it's so easy to make fun of them.
- 42:30SPEAKER_04: It's so easy to take a picture five minutes before tip-off and see how empty that place is, and then go up to Lubbock, six-hour drive, and go look at that fan base an hour before tip-off and see how much more full it is than it is five minutes before tip-off over there in Austin.
- 42:51SPEAKER_04: And it's just such a lovely sight to see.
- 42:53SPEAKER_04: Uh, it just shows how much this fan base cares about this basketball team and about this school versus what UT does.
- 43:04SPEAKER_08: It's yeah, it's not just basketball for us.
- 43:06SPEAKER_08: I mean, you look at our baseball numbers.
- 43:07SPEAKER_08: We are apparently we are in the top five in baseball attendance.
- 43:10SPEAKER_08: You know, we we support our teams, we support, we love our school, we love our teams, and it just it really reinforces that wine and cheese stereotype because boy, does does it apply to how dreary all their events are.
- 43:23SPEAKER_04: Yep, absolutely.
- 43:24SPEAKER_04: So uh let's move on from basketball.
- 43:27SPEAKER_04: It's been great.
- 43:28SPEAKER_04: Uh, great week of tech basketball.
- 43:30SPEAKER_04: Let's hope uh to keep it rolling against West Virginia and then Kansas on uh next Monday, but we'll get to that here in a second.
- 43:37SPEAKER_04: Uh let's talk a little football news because uh we had some we had some big news come out.
- 43:42SPEAKER_04: Uh some guys leaving for the NFL, uh, you know, guys that we knew were already gonna leave because they ran out of eligibility.
- 43:49SPEAKER_04: Rico Jeffers and and Travis Koontz were putting out posts on social media saying, you know, preparing for the NFL draft, thanking Red Raider Nation for everything they do.
- 43:58SPEAKER_04: Um, but one that was a Little up in the air that we didn't know uh whether he was going to come back or not was uh was our boy John Garabay, um ultra supreme kicker.
- 44:09SPEAKER_04: Um, I believe he went 18 for 19 on the year on field goals, including uh if it wasn't the it was one of the greatest kicks in Texas Tech history, uh, beating the Iowa State Cyclones on the 62-yard field goal.
- 44:24SPEAKER_04: Uh John Garabae has officially declared for the NFL draft he will not be returning to Texas Tech.
- 44:30SPEAKER_08: Yeah, the only field goal he missed was that I think it was like 50 yards against Baylor at the very end to tie the game to go to overtime.
- 44:37SPEAKER_08: That's it.
- 44:38SPEAKER_08: So the guy is automatic.
- 44:39SPEAKER_08: The guy's got a long distance sniper of a leg.
- 44:42SPEAKER_08: So I mean, I would have loved to have him back just to have that efficiency and to have that consistency.
- 44:48SPEAKER_08: And I mean it it doesn't suck to be able to put one back 60 yards out.
- 44:52SPEAKER_08: So, but dude, go get paid, you know.
- 44:55SPEAKER_08: That'll just all the scouts, all the NFL scouts are just watching that Iowa State kick over and over again and saying, All right, that's that's exactly what we need on this team, just just in case, you know.
- 45:05SPEAKER_08: So it's it's it's so great to go see him.
- 45:07SPEAKER_08: I would love to see more Red Raiders in the NFL, and having a kicker would be pretty fun.
- 45:11SPEAKER_08: I'd always be checking in and see how he did.
- 45:13SPEAKER_08: So I'm really excited to see how he does on the next level.
- 45:16SPEAKER_04: No doubt.
- 45:17SPEAKER_04: When you're a kicker, you need to go whenever you're riding high.
- 45:20SPEAKER_04: And uh John Garabay is writing as high as most kickers could be right now.
- 45:26SPEAKER_04: So uh good luck to him, good luck to everybody um from this past Texas Tech football team that is moving on to the NFL draft and and hoping for pro chances, whether that be in the NFL, be in the CFL, or whatever, uh, or just you know, moving on with life.
- 45:42SPEAKER_04: I mean, wish them the best uh with whatever they're doing.
- 45:45SPEAKER_04: Um, but it it I will say for kicker, it looks like uh you know, Trey Wolf's still on the team here.
- 45:51SPEAKER_04: Uh, we've seen Trey Wolf at his high and we've seen Trey Wolf at his low.
- 45:55SPEAKER_04: Uh his his freshman season, I believe.
- 45:58SPEAKER_04: And he's actually he follows us on Twitter.
- 46:00SPEAKER_04: We like Trey Wolf.
- 46:01SPEAKER_04: We're big Trey Wolf guys over here.
- 46:03SPEAKER_04: Uh, if he can get back to what he was his freshman season, because he was a really, really good kicker his freshman season.
- 46:09SPEAKER_04: And I would be I would be ecstatic to have that Trey Wolf on this next year's team.
- 46:17SPEAKER_08: What it's all about with being a kicker is consistency.
- 46:19SPEAKER_08: If you can't provide that, then you're not really any use in that state.
- 46:24SPEAKER_08: So hopefully he gets right this this offseason because it's all it's mostly mental, these guys.
- 46:28SPEAKER_08: So we can get his brain right.
- 46:29SPEAKER_08: If he can get all the Zane back, we have nothing to worry about.
- 46:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
- 46:34SPEAKER_04: So that's uh some good kicker news moving forward to next year.
- 46:37SPEAKER_04: Um big kicker pod, big kicker podcast over here.
- 46:41SPEAKER_04: Hey, we've had friend of the pod, awesome Mac Newer on here, uh, all-star, best punter imaginable, uh, on this podcast.
- 46:48SPEAKER_04: And so uh we're we're human history, actually.
- 46:51SPEAKER_04: So oh yeah, no doubt.
- 46:52SPEAKER_04: We're all about legs, name a better punter.
- 46:55SPEAKER_04: You can't not even close, not even close, but let's move on to some uh transfer portal news because of course, naturally, we are gonna have some transfers from last year's team going to different programs, whether that be for plan time, whether that be for a number of things.
- 47:13SPEAKER_04: So uh we had a couple players enter the transfer portal this past week, one of which uh is a ghost, one of which we don't know is a person that exists on this planet, and that is Maverick Macyver.
- 47:25SPEAKER_04: Uh quarterback extraordinaire coming out.
- 47:29SPEAKER_04: So they say, so they say so.
- 47:32SPEAKER_04: The legend is the legend of Maverick MacGyver will never be solved at Texas Tech.
- 47:39SPEAKER_04: Uh we don't know if this man exists or not.
- 47:41SPEAKER_08: We don't, and I don't think a Twitter account proves he does because today was the first day I ever saw him on Twitter you know, announcing thank you, Red Raider Nation.
- 47:50SPEAKER_08: So I'm thinking maybe that's a little too coincidental.
- 47:53SPEAKER_08: Maybe, maybe that's just you know, that's just big Mac Maverick McGyver corporation saying, No, he's real, he's real, buy stock, he's he's there, but I'm still not on board, I still don't believe it.
- 48:04SPEAKER_08: We need to send like ghost hunters, whatever that show is on travel TV or whatever to go check out the the football facilities in Lubbock, Texas, because the ghosts of Maverick with MacIver is purely purely speculation at this point.
- 48:18SPEAKER_04: Yes, I believe it was the season before COVID started, so it would have been uh Alan Bowman was coming in.
- 48:26SPEAKER_04: We were all thinking this is gonna be the guy, and then we start hearing rumblings of hey, maybe this true freshman quarterback could potentially take some snaps, and his name is Maverick Freaking MacGyver, the most West Texas name of all time.
- 48:43SPEAKER_04: And we're like, he's from San Angelo, so allegedly, yeah.
- 48:47SPEAKER_04: Allegedly, if he exists, he's from San Angelo.
- 48:50SPEAKER_04: Uh we're really rolling on this joke here.
- 48:55SPEAKER_04: Um, but no, so uh you know, he was he was thought to have potentially taken over the quarterback role.
- 49:02SPEAKER_04: Alan Bowman gets hurt.
- 49:04SPEAKER_04: We never see McIver, I believe, got hurt that year, and then Matt Wells takes over, and then we never see him ever again.
- 49:11SPEAKER_04: And we keep thinking, you know, especially that year where we had Bowman and Columbia, we were like, Can is there not somebody better?
- 49:20SPEAKER_04: Is there not?
- 49:21SPEAKER_04: Like, I this guy McIver's on the roster.
- 49:24SPEAKER_04: Why don't we throw him out there?
- 49:27SPEAKER_04: But yet again, we never see him, we never see him.
- 49:30SPEAKER_04: No, nothing is mentioned of him ever again, and we just think maybe he doesn't exist.
- 49:38SPEAKER_08: It's been such a bizarre saga, man.
- 49:40SPEAKER_08: Because if you look at it this year, that means he was number five on the depth chart.
- 49:44SPEAKER_08: Yeah, so I don't know what happened to this kid, I don't know how he got so lost in the sauce.
- 49:50SPEAKER_08: I'm sure a lot of it has to do with him being transparent as he is a ghost, and it's hard to see those, but this guy was just gone.
- 49:58SPEAKER_08: Like, I I remember wherever we we still had cliff, or like this you're like you said earlier, that this guy could be the feature of the program, and just poof, nothing like for like three years.
- 50:08SPEAKER_04: It was nothing, yeah.
- 50:10SPEAKER_04: We were like, What has this kid not entered the transfer portal?
- 50:13SPEAKER_04: Does this kid exist?
- 50:15SPEAKER_04: Is he still on the team?
- 50:16SPEAKER_04: What's going on?
- 50:17SPEAKER_04: And uh he is now popped up and said he is going to transfer finally uh to somewhere else to potentially get playing time.
- 50:26SPEAKER_04: And you know, we've been making this joke, he doesn't exist, everything like that for this past I don't know, 20 minutes now, feels like, but um no, I uh we wish him the best.
- 50:36SPEAKER_04: We do.
- 50:36SPEAKER_04: Uh hopefully he can find some playing time somewhere else.
- 50:39SPEAKER_04: Uh I it stinks that didn't work out here, but uh man, when you hear that Sonny Cumby has three quarterbacks for the uh Liberty Bowl, and uh none of which are Maverick MacGyver, who has supposedly been healthy all year.
- 50:52SPEAKER_04: Uh that tells you something.
- 50:54SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it's I mean, obviously, like you said, best of luck to him.
- 50:57SPEAKER_08: I'm surprised it took him this long to transfer.
- 50:59SPEAKER_08: Uh, because he was just just after his first year, he was nowhere to be seen on the depth chart in any real sense.
- 51:04SPEAKER_08: So, but good luck to him.
- 51:05SPEAKER_08: Uh, hopefully, he can finally go get some playing time.
- 51:07SPEAKER_08: Hopefully, he can may go to a program that'll appreciate him and who likes ghosts, who likes to play with ghosts.
- 51:13SPEAKER_08: So, hopefully, he goes to a nice spooky program.
- 51:16SPEAKER_04: There you go.
- 51:16SPEAKER_04: I just I I want to see him one time on TV.
- 51:19SPEAKER_04: I want to see him one time take one snap, maybe pass one ball on TV just to just to give me that solace that he does in fact exist.
- 51:27SPEAKER_08: Agreed, man.
- 51:28SPEAKER_08: Hopefully, we won't be searching for that footage long.
- 51:30SPEAKER_08: I really do hope he goes and it makes a difference somewhere.
- 51:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 51:34SPEAKER_04: So we spent way too long on Maverick McGyver entering the transfer portal.
- 51:38SPEAKER_04: Let's um let's move on because uh Nelson and Banasor also entered the transfer portal.
- 51:45SPEAKER_04: Uh defensive linemen uh played it, played a good amount this past season and actually you know was pretty solid this year.
- 51:51SPEAKER_04: So um, you know, this is a hit, I think, of of everybody that's entered the transfer portal.
- 51:56SPEAKER_04: This is probably the biggest hit.
- 51:58SPEAKER_04: Um, but you know, again, it's a it's a defensive lineman in a group of defensive linemen returning that uh it just it's a crowded room for the first time in a long time for Texas Tech.
- 52:11SPEAKER_08: That's good to hear.
- 52:12SPEAKER_08: I mean, how often do we get to say it's a crowded room on defensive line at Texas Tech?
- 52:17SPEAKER_08: So good problem to have.
- 52:18SPEAKER_08: Obviously, stinks losing a veteran no matter what, especially a guy that was making a difference.
- 52:22SPEAKER_08: But at least we're losing him in a good shape.
- 52:26SPEAKER_08: You know, it's not like this is like just a huge they're blowing a huge hole in the in the hole in the hall here, but uh, I'm just glad to see that things are looking up, things are looking up on defensive line.
- 52:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, uh as as far as we know, Tyree Wilson's coming back, uh Jalen Hutchings coming back, um uh oh crap, Tony Bradford coming back.
- 52:49SPEAKER_04: Uh, and then we also uh kind of an under under the radar guy, we had a guy transfer to Texas Tech kind of later last offseason in Robert Wooten, who is coming from Virginia Tech, who's another defensive lineman.
- 53:02SPEAKER_04: Uh, and then Joey McGuire has been really heavy on defensive line on his recruits.
- 53:07SPEAKER_04: So I can understand him just seeing this group coming in, seeing the returners and being like, hey, maybe I could get some time, some more time at another program.
- 53:17SPEAKER_04: So uh wish the best for Nelson and um hopefully you know he he finds his way.
- 53:22SPEAKER_08: Absolutely, man.
- 53:24SPEAKER_08: And I'm just I'm glad to hear that Joey McGuire is filling up to his what he said, and we're gonna play defense in Lubbock.
- 53:29SPEAKER_08: So it's it's good to see that's it's the main focus now.
- 53:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 53:33SPEAKER_04: And then um, this next piece uh of news, I I don't know if it's official, but I've seen on Texas Tech accounts that he has been working out with the team and winning weightlifting competitions and that kind of stuff, but it looks like Kosei Eldridge will come back.
- 53:48SPEAKER_04: Uh, linebacker played a good amount this year, but with all the linebackers that we are losing, we need as much returning as we can.
- 53:56SPEAKER_04: Uh, Krishna Merriweather already announced that he's coming back.
- 53:59SPEAKER_04: If we can get Kose Eldridge back as well, uh it's just another piece that could uh uh help this linebacker unit.
- 54:06SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I mean, I feel like I'm a broken record when it comes to linebackers.
- 54:09SPEAKER_08: It's it's really proven at TechSech that it's just a next guy up situation.
- 54:12SPEAKER_08: So I have all the faith that this guy's ready to go in and ball out like his his predecessors.
- 54:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 54:19SPEAKER_04: So um, man, I had one more thing on football, and that is we are the official podcast of the team, uh, real deal steppas.
- 54:28SPEAKER_04: Uh want to officially announce that here on the podcast.
- 54:32SPEAKER_04: Um, if you are rooting for a Texas Tech offseason football team, uh, go root for the real deal steppas.
- 54:39SPEAKER_08: It's it we have our ambassador with with Austin SmackNamara.
- 54:43SPEAKER_08: He is a great friend of the pod, you know, a real friend of the pod, just a close friend of the pod.
- 54:48SPEAKER_08: So we're all about the real deal steppas.
- 54:52SPEAKER_04: That's our team.
- 54:53SPEAKER_04: Go support them, go rep them in the offseason challenge that Joey McGuire is concocted.
- 54:58SPEAKER_04: Uh, so we're ready, we're ready.
- 55:00SPEAKER_08: Um, I think that's a great idea.
- 55:02SPEAKER_08: I I love I love that accountability team.
- 55:04SPEAKER_08: It's just fun, you know.
- 55:05SPEAKER_08: Can we get a little competitiveness with your guys and go support the rest of the programs of the school?
- 55:09SPEAKER_08: So I love it.
- 55:10SPEAKER_08: I I just the excitement Joey Maguire brings to a stale football program is so fun.
- 55:15SPEAKER_04: And it's and it's all social media too, man.
- 55:18SPEAKER_04: Like it's people posting pictures of themselves at these games and supporting and getting this, getting people excited about football.
- 55:26SPEAKER_04: It's a really good idea and a really good thing that they're instituting here.
- 55:31SPEAKER_04: So go support, you know, if your team 806 Mafia, if your team jug heads, if your team whatever, uh, go support them and rep them because this is a really cool deal.
- 55:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah, but real teams real deal steppas are the best.
- 55:44SPEAKER_04: So oh, yeah, no doubt.
- 55:45SPEAKER_04: I mean, that's obvious.
- 55:46SPEAKER_04: Real deal steppas.
- 55:47SPEAKER_04: That's that's the team you root for.
- 55:50SPEAKER_04: Um moving on.
- 55:51SPEAKER_04: Uh, baseball team season tickets officially sold out.
- 55:54SPEAKER_04: Baseball season coming coming upon us real quick.
- 55:58SPEAKER_08: Heck to the yes, man.
- 56:00SPEAKER_08: I'm at that point of the year where I'm really looking forward to the diamond, and we're getting a lot of love in the preseason.
- 56:05SPEAKER_08: Uh, baseball America was it.
- 56:07SPEAKER_08: They were they ranked us in the top 15.
- 56:09SPEAKER_08: So we're really moving in with the full head of steam here.
- 56:12SPEAKER_08: So it's just all business as usual in the Tim Dadlock.
- 56:15SPEAKER_08: I love the culture that that guy's built there.
- 56:17SPEAKER_08: It's just the expectations are always sky high every year.
- 56:19SPEAKER_08: And I know those season ticket buyers are like, we're heading to Omaha.
- 56:21SPEAKER_08: I hope we do, man.
- 56:22SPEAKER_08: I'd love to go.
- 56:23SPEAKER_08: I want to get there.
- 56:24SPEAKER_08: I want to go for one.
- 56:25SPEAKER_08: So let's go.
- 56:26SPEAKER_08: Let's let's make it to Omaha and then we're gonna go.
- 56:29SPEAKER_04: Yes, absolutely.
- 56:30SPEAKER_04: Um, and by the way, we still have a uh top five pick in this upcoming MLB draft in Jace Young coming back.
- 56:38SPEAKER_04: Uh big time.
- 56:39SPEAKER_04: Mad Decent Brothers, Mad Decent Brothers, the Young Brothers.
- 56:43SPEAKER_04: Uh, they're just one of the best.
- 56:44SPEAKER_04: Them and the Culver brothers.
- 56:46SPEAKER_04: I mean, that's the top two set of brothers.
- 56:48SPEAKER_08: Those are the top two of the three best Texas Tech brothers.
- 56:52SPEAKER_08: The the McGonagall brothers are dead last.
- 56:55SPEAKER_08: Dead last three is a little too generous.
- 56:57SPEAKER_08: Three is not even three really far behind.
- 56:59SPEAKER_04: Y'all are three.
- 57:00SPEAKER_04: Y'all are y'all are in the we're not three.
- 57:03SPEAKER_04: Y'all are probably sitting in the 900 range.
- 57:05SPEAKER_08: I think that's probably true.
- 57:08SPEAKER_08: Maybe even the thousands, actually.
- 57:09SPEAKER_08: Uh yeah.
- 57:10SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I'm sure there's been plenty of siblings that gone to tech that are much better.
- 57:13SPEAKER_04: So, yeah, much better than you and your brother Austin.
- 57:16SPEAKER_04: Um, but uh let's kind of move on to um what's coming up next.
- 57:22SPEAKER_04: I just wrote down a few things, uh, basketball-wise.
- 57:25SPEAKER_04: Um, next up, men's basketball.
- 57:27SPEAKER_04: We're gonna start with them.
- 57:28SPEAKER_04: Uh at home against West Virginia.
- 57:31SPEAKER_04: That game's gonna be at 11 a.m.
- 57:33SPEAKER_04: on Saturday.
- 57:34SPEAKER_04: This is a big one.
- 57:35SPEAKER_04: We just gotta keep it rolling in this gauntlet that is Big 12 play.
- 57:40SPEAKER_04: Uh, unfortunately, it is another 11 a.m.
- 57:42SPEAKER_04: game.
- 57:43SPEAKER_04: Um, but and the Mountaineers are tough.
- 57:45SPEAKER_04: They played a lot of teams tight.
- 57:46SPEAKER_04: Uh, they they just had a pretty good game against Baylor, they lost, but uh they beat Yukon, I believe, earlier this season.
- 57:52SPEAKER_04: So the Mountaineers are pretty good.
- 57:54SPEAKER_04: Uh, just gotta take care of business at home.
- 57:58SPEAKER_08: The Bob Huggins team, of course, is good.
- 58:01SPEAKER_08: And he's gonna drag his stool to Lubbock.
- 58:04SPEAKER_08: And I really do hope to be out there in full force.
- 58:07SPEAKER_08: You gotta fight off that hangover and get there.
- 58:09SPEAKER_08: You gotta have some bloody Marys, have some screwdrivers, buckle up and get there, and just make it hell for the Mountaineers because God knows they're gonna bring it where we travel to the to Morgantown because that's a tough place, too.
- 58:20SPEAKER_08: But let's let's make sure we get this first one out of the two.
- 58:24SPEAKER_04: No doubt.
- 58:24SPEAKER_04: That is going to be on ESPN two on Saturday, and then probably before we talk to y'all again, we are going to travel to Lawrence, Kansas, and play the Jayhawks for the second time this season.
- 58:41SPEAKER_04: My man, how sweet would it be to sweep the Jayhawks uh this year?
- 58:48SPEAKER_08: Spectacular.
- 58:49SPEAKER_08: And you know, not anyone can just walk into the Allen Fieldhouse and walk out with a W.
- 58:53SPEAKER_08: You know, they're definitely gonna be pissed off that we we snuck one on them.
- 58:56SPEAKER_08: We're their only loss in conference, yeah.
- 58:58SPEAKER_08: So they're they're definitely gonna be pissed off about it.
- 59:00SPEAKER_08: I'm sure they have the the calendar circled to get revenge on us.
- 59:03SPEAKER_08: So, man, but it wouldn't be sweet, and it just a huge statement to the rest of the Big 12, putting us squarely in that that Big 12 trophy talk, regular season champs.
- 59:12SPEAKER_08: And I know there'd be nothing sweeter than a Mark Adams victory story than that.
- 59:16SPEAKER_08: So, and I don't know if we've ever swept Kansas ever.
- 59:19SPEAKER_08: So I would be uh quite the accomplishment of from a year one coach, and I know if anybody can do it, it's definitely Mark Adams.
- 59:25SPEAKER_08: So I'm looking forward to it.
- 59:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 59:28SPEAKER_04: That's gonna be on Monday the 24th at eight o'clock on ESPN.
- 59:32SPEAKER_04: We are the primetime slot there, so take care of business, boys.
- 59:36SPEAKER_04: Uh, we're gonna be rooting for you.
- 59:38SPEAKER_04: Um, but that's what we got coming up next week for men's basketball, women's basketball, who just had a heartbreaker, man, against TCU.
- 59:45SPEAKER_04: They really did.
- 59:46SPEAKER_04: Um, they can't seem to get a couple wins stacked in a row.
- 59:50SPEAKER_04: Uh they're just, you know, I know, I know.
- 59:54SPEAKER_04: I didn't I didn't say it.
- 59:55SPEAKER_04: I didn't say stack success.
- 59:57SPEAKER_04: Now I say it.
- 59:59SPEAKER_04: Uh, but no, it's been it's been an up and down year for the ladies.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_04: Um, they're they get a couple big wins or they get a big win and then they lose when they shouldn't, and then they get a big win and then they lose when they shouldn't.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_04: So uh they just lost to TCU on a heartbreaker, kind of a uh crazy last possession.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_04: TCU made a three, and then we ran a great play.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_04: I'll give Krista Gerlich all the credit in the world for running a great play, uh, but we couldn't tap it in at the buzzer and uh lost to the Hornfrog.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_04: So hopefully we can get back on track against Kansas in Lawrence on Saturday.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_04: Uh hopefully the ladies take care of business.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_08: She's she's got a great foundation building, you know.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_08: She's really putting her culture into the program.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_08: It's only year two, so you know, stacking success is tough.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_08: I said it again, it's tough while you're trying to put together a program, like her own program.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_08: But I things are looking up.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_08: I mean, we we we're getting these monster wins, but like you said, we are dropping as ones that we shouldn't.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_08: But that's also the sport as well.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_08: Um, but I know we're gonna ride the ship, I know things are only getting better.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_04: Yep, no doubt.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_04: So root on the ladies whenever you can.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_04: Uh, watch them on TV, you know, go to the game if you are up in Lubbock.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_04: Uh, do everything you can to support that team.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_04: Um, let's move on because we talked about Song of the Week.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_04: We talked about maybe we don't have a song of the week, but then you ended up switching the gun a little bit uh on me.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_04: So we do have a song of the week.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_08: Switch the gun.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_04: You d if that's a reference, it's not, but I'm making it a reference.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_04: Um, but so you say, I was like, I was like, hey, maybe we should recommend something else, you know, maybe a TV show or a movie or something that we've seen lately.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_04: So I wrote that down.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_04: I don't know if you have one, but I have one.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_08: Uh I I I know I I it's gonna be mine's gonna be basic.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_08: I have two really basic recommendations, but you you bet you better hit yours first since yours is the great, you know, your this was your idea here.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah, I mean, okay, I'll I'll hit mine first.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_04: Um, me and the fiance have been watching a new TV show recently.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_04: Uh, it's on Showtime.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_04: So I, you know, I know not a lot of people have Showtime.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_04: Uh, Kristen actually bought Showtime specifically so she could watch this show and the new season of Dexter.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_04: Uh, but we ended up watching it, it's called Yellow Jackets.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_04: And dude, this show is awesome.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_04: This show is really, really good.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_04: And now officially the whole first season is on Showtime.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_04: Um, and it and it comes out weekly.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_04: This is the thing.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_04: Like, it's not just a bin show, you know, they don't just release all the episodes at once, they've made us wait, you know, a week before we have to see it, like you know, like they used to do in the olden days.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, wait a week for the new episode to drop.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_04: And it's just a really cool concept.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_04: It's about a group of girls that uh were on a high school soccer team that crashed in uh the middle of the wilderness and they've had to survive and they kind of switch back and forth a little losty, and you know, my love for Lost.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_04: So uh it's a little bit like Lost.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry if you dislike that show, but uh go watch Yellow Jackets, it's really good.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_08: All right, I've never heard of that one.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_08: I do not have showtime, but if I do eventually, I guess I'll have to check that one out.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_08: I mean, with me, I'm just going with it all time.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_08: Like uh, this is directed at our younger crowd.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_08: Uh, it's definitely one of the most syndicated shows of all time, but guys, it's hilarious.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_08: I laugh every single episode, and that is Seinfeld.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_08: Like, it's a it's a it's a pretty overlooked show in our age range.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_08: You know, a lot of the go-to's are like friends or office and all that with the sitcoms, which I get those are funny shows, but Seinfeld is so funny, and I I laugh every single time.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_08: So I would recommend to our young listeners to actually give Seinfeld a chance on Netflix.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_04: This is coming from known friends hater Tristan McGonagall.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_04: Uh, Tristan hates friends, you hate friends, hate friends.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_04: You do hate don't hate friends.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_04: You you go out of your way to knock on friends.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_08: It's sometimes it just like people are obsessed with some shows, and I'm like, why are you obsessed with this show?
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_08: Like if people get weird about it, like they make it just their personality, kind of like the office.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_08: Same thing with the office.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_08: Like, I and they've watched it like five times through, and I I just I don't get that for any show.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_08: I guess I I don't know, maybe it's just me.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_04: You're just a hater.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_04: That's what it is.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_08: I'm maybe I'm fine.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_08: I'm just a hater.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_08: I really am.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_08: I really am.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_08: I'm a hipster, I'm a hater.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_04: I'm glad you finally admitted it.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_04: Um, no, yeah.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_04: I mean, I haven't I haven't watched Seinfeld all the way through.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_04: I've caught an episode, you know, here and there, but I haven't really watched it all the way through.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_04: So uh that'll be on the list.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_04: I have a bunch of them on the list, like shows you should watch, like Sopranos and The Wire.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_04: Still haven't seen any of them.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_04: I know I need to watch them, I'll get on it.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_08: But I mean, but what's what's fun about Seinfeld is every every single episode is self-contained, they rarely ever go together.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_08: So you can just turn on one and walk away.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_08: They're 25 minutes long, and just you can put on any of them and just walk away.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_08: You don't have to keep up, you know.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_04: I got you right on.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_04: Well, maybe I'll give Seinfeld a little bit more of a chance.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_04: Let's move on.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_04: Song of the week.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_04: Since we do have one this week, you go ahead, Tristan.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_08: All right, so with mine, I'm going with a a really cool take on the country sound.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_08: It's kind of a psychedelic, more alternative sound.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_08: It's really lush and sounds so good.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_08: Uh, I really dig this song.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_08: It's called Little Miss by Kirby Brown off his albums, off his album Dream Songs.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_08: It's just an addictive sound, so smooth.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_08: It just I keep finding myself snapping and sing along.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_08: It's just it's a really cool take on what country music can sound like.
- 1:05:58unknown: Okay.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_04: Again.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_04: An artist I've never heard of.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_04: Uh, you threw in the word psychedelic there.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_04: That's uh that's cool.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_08: Maybe you'll you'll you'll you'll kind of feel like okay, I can kind of see where that's coming from.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_08: You'll you'll you'll kind of get that vibe, maybe.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_08: Maybe you won't, but that's that's that's what I'm going for there.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_04: That's what music's all about, man.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_04: It's about your own interpretation about these things.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_04: You know, if we're getting real deep here.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_04: Uh no, I'm uh I'm gonna give you a song of the week, and it's and it's a guy that uh certain people have told me I look like.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_04: Um, I don't get a lot of celebrity look-alikes.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_08: Um that's very true.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_04: Uh thank you.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_04: Thank you for pointing that out.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_04: Um, no, uh, a lot of people tell me I look like John Party.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_04: Um, I haven't gone clean shaven in a long time now.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_04: Uh John Party is always clean shaven, so I don't really know, but I I think I would look like him if I shaved off my beard.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_04: But um, no, this song I have by John Pardy is Heartache Medication.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_04: Uh, good song, good jam.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_04: Uh, I I haven't I haven't listened to a ton of John Party before, but uh I I for some reason I was just listening to him.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_04: Uh I put on a playlist on Apple Music and just started rolling with it.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_04: And uh I really like this one.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_04: That's Heartache Medication by John Party.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_05: I'm looking, I'm drinking one, I'm drinking two.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_05: I have my heartache medication.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_05: Strong medication to go learn.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_08: You know, you know me.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_08: I'm a very uh uh you know outside of Nashville kind of country music dude, but he's the best, one of the he represents the best of Nashville.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_08: He's got a great Bakersfield sound, and heartache medication is a great pick.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_08: You got you just catch yourself singing it, like singing along wherever you're not even listening to, or like you know, you know, no, but dude, you do like John Bardy.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_08: I I definitely uh uh preach for that.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I was I I mean the first time I heard that was when I was working uh for Toyota up actually with your brother, and uh we were up at Tulsa Boat Show.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_04: We were just showing off some of the new vehicles and everything like that.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_04: And this woman came up to me and was just like adamant.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_04: She was like, You look just like John Party.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, ma'am, I've been like she had some sodas.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_04: I'm yeah, oh yeah, she was definitely drinking that day.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_04: Um, I'm like, ma'am, I just work for Toyota.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_04: What do you want from me?
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_04: Uh, but no, where's your guitar?
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_04: She was she was 100% ready for me to walk up on stage and just start singing and surprise everybody.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_04: But um, no, I'm I'm not John Party, but I do like his music.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_04: Great pick, man.
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_04: Take us home.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_04: All right, we're gonna take it, take you home with uh our normal list of plugs at the end of episodes.

- 1:10:12SPEAKER_09: Raider.
