Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:21everyone. Welcome back to the studio.
- 0:24I don't know if you guys could tell, but the episode that I
- 0:26recorded from the hotel room on Tuesday, I was actually really
- 0:30sick. But I didn't realize that I was
- 0:33sick until like an hour after I recorded that.
- 0:35And I came down with a horrible fever.
- 0:38And then I was just sick. And I was watching the episode
- 0:41back when I was editing it and I was like, why am I so like low
- 0:44energy? What is going on here?
- 0:46And then literally got a fever like an hour later.
- 0:49So yes, if you're like, what is going on in this episode, that's
- 0:53why. But yes, I'm still a little bit
- 0:55sick, but I am definitely starting to feel a bit better.
- 0:57But our trip to Melbourne was really good.
- 0:59We got everything done that we wanted to.
- 1:01We got to record all the episodes outside.
- 1:03I think they were really good. I was a lot more chill in these
- 1:06episodes than the first couple. You know, the first couple I
- 1:08felt a little bit on edge. I wasn't sure like how much I
- 1:11should be projecting outside to be recording, you know, outside
- 1:14in the elements and stuff. So I think these next few
- 1:17episodes of the series will be really good.
- 1:19All right, let's get into the stories for today.
- 1:22So the first story that I have for you guys, I'm not sure if
- 1:25any of you guys have seen this because it's all happened just
- 1:28in the past couple of days, but a Staples retail employee has
- 1:32been going viral for their workplace content.
- 1:35So an employee at Staples is going so viral right now for
- 1:38documenting her experience working at the retailer and
- 1:41giving them literally the best organic press ever.
- 1:45The creator's name is Oblivion, but she calls herself the
- 1:49Staples Baddie and she's a print specialist at the store.
- 1:52For any listeners who are not based in North America, I don't
- 1:55know if they have Staples anywhere else.
- 1:56They don't have it here in Australia at least.
- 1:58Staples is like an office supply store.
- 2:00It's like office works here in Australia, but it's not just an
- 2:05office supply store, according to Oblivion.
- 2:08It is so much more. And that is what a lot of her
- 2:11content is about. So part of what's made this
- 2:13content so viral is that she vlogs herself at work and she
- 2:16shows like different interesting things that you can do at
- 2:18Staples that the average person probably doesn't know.
- 2:22I feel like this segment literally sounds like an ad for
- 2:24Staples, but I promise it's not. And I promise her content is
- 2:26also not an ad for Staples. So it's interesting because like
- 2:30I said, it's not an adverse Staples.
- 2:31Like it's not corporate content, It's not on their account.
- 2:34They're not paying her to make this content as far as we know.
- 2:37It's genuine employee generated content.
- 2:39She's in her uniform, she's at work and she's just like being
- 2:42herself in her content. She's being so funny.
- 2:45She's having such a good time and she is like low key
- 2:47promoting Staples and she talks about how much she loves her job
- 2:50so. It's come to my attention that
- 2:52y'all don't really know the full scope of what Staples like does.
- 2:55Like we can make ornaments, we can make mug shirts, backpack
- 2:59science posters, whatever. You can need a banner that's
- 3:02like 8 feet long shirt. Why not?
- 3:06Let's do do anything. This is my favorite shack that
- 3:10we got in the store. He's just gaming.
- 3:12He's having the time of his life.
- 3:14Anyways, you want a high quality projector by chance?
- 3:18You need like a high quality projector that like turns and
- 3:22like, oh, Oh yeah, let's make him a what happened?
- 3:29Thinking how to do come in store or even online because you can
- 3:32pick this stuff up same day if you order before noon or early
- 3:36in the next morning or get it delivered.
- 3:38How if you don't want to leave your house.
- 3:40Got your picture? Could we print it off on some
- 3:42sublimation paper? Fancy words.
- 3:46Then once I trim this, I'm going to tape it on the mug.
- 3:49As you can see, we've taped that on there.
- 3:53Then we put it in the medieval torture device that you really
- 3:56want to put your arm in, but you don't.
- 4:01And no matter how much I tell myself it's going to be fine if
- 4:03I grab it real quick. Got a pop up some hot gloves.
- 4:08No, not now that I got a cool that is just going to sit there
- 4:14for a while. And now all we got to do is peel
- 4:17to reveal. So then she made a video a
- 4:29couple of days ago talking about what the experience has been
- 4:32like this past week since she went like totally viral.
- 4:34And here is what she said about how she started this content.
- 4:37I started out just like posting just kind of joke videos and
- 4:43then I was like thinking to myself like how little certain
- 4:48services get used and like I was kind of sad I'd never have done
- 4:52them before honestly. Because like when you work there
- 4:57you see all these options and shit and it's like, I want to do
- 5:01that. But like when it comes to
- 5:03something that's like multitudes of money, you're not just going
- 5:08to play around with it because like what?
- 5:11No, So I just was like come on y'all get some direct mail.
- 5:15Let me we can print anything type shit just using fun words
- 5:20and the first video I ever posted was I finna be in the
- 5:24pram referencing the whole terrors world thing because I
- 5:29haven't heard about it in a minute.
- 5:31I was like OK, so like I feel like this would like revive
- 5:34around a little and then I just kept posting and like being
- 5:39myself because I don't know it was easy.
- 5:42I would just put on the camera, just set up like I want to turn
- 5:45it on and to start talking about different things about Staples,
- 5:49random little things, whatever it may be, and having just fun
- 5:54with it 'cause I was like, I don't really hear about Staples
- 5:58services. I really wish I did more, and
- 6:01I'm assuming other people do too.
- 6:03I thought, I thought more people would cause like when I found
- 6:06out all we could do at Staples, I was so floored.
- 6:10I thought that was so cool. I'll be able to help people and
- 6:13be like, yeah, we absolutely can't do that.
- 6:15OK so her first video about Staples was posted on January
- 6:1914th and it was literally just her saying if you need something
- 6:22printed I've got you. And since then she's made 34
- 6:26more video and her Staples content has reached over 18.3
- 6:30million views total. But I wouldn't even say it's
- 6:33like that reach that's been most impressive.
- 6:36She is genuinely changing the way that people are thinking
- 6:38about Staples from both the perspective of what they offer,
- 6:41like I said, but also because of how corporate is seemingly
- 6:45receiving this and responding to her content.
- 6:48Especially after the whole Bauer situation.
- 6:51This is a really good look for Staples because they are in her
- 6:54comment section gassing her up. Apparently, they followed her
- 6:58right away. Apparently, PR for, like, you
- 7:00know, corporate reached out to her with positive words.
- 7:03As far as we know, they haven't asked her to pull back or to
- 7:07share less or to act differently in her videos or anything like
- 7:11that, even though she is making this content, like, while she's
- 7:13on the job, technically. So, yeah, it's been a really
- 7:16positive response, it seems, from Staples corporate, at least
- 7:19so far. And people are like, wow, this
- 7:21is actually changing the way that I view Staples.
- 7:23So this is a take from brand strategist Julie Terkel.
- 7:26What I find so fascinating about it is that this employee is
- 7:30solving a problem that Staples has had with their brand
- 7:33perception for decades, which is that people only go into Staples
- 7:38when they need things that are really boring, like paper and
- 7:41toner, and they don't know all the exciting things that Staples
- 7:45actually has in the store. So the Staples baddie is
- 7:47highlighting all the fun things that you can have printed at
- 7:50Staples, like these mugs. Apparently there are a whole
- 7:53bunch of things that Staples can do in print, and this employee
- 7:56is basically saying I've never been able to do them because
- 7:59people don't come in the store and do all these fun things.
- 8:02Now, I should add that about 15, maybe 20 years ago, I was hired
- 8:06by Staples as a consultant to help them with this issue that
- 8:09they have with their brand perception.
- 8:11And at the time we were looking at adding licenses to bigger
- 8:15categories like office furniture.
- 8:17They ended up not doing it because they are very, very
- 8:19careful about their brand image. But Staples does have a lot of
- 8:22great licenses in the notebook and planners department.
- 8:25The Staples baddie has pointed out about several of them and
- 8:27highlighting all the features inside some of the notebooks and
- 8:30planners that people may not see because they're not going into
- 8:32Staples. And like Romeo and the Jingle
- 8:34for Doctor Pepper, this creator's content is really
- 8:37taking off. It'll be very interesting to see
- 8:40whether Staples embraces this. And then I wanted to read some
- 8:44of the comments that I feel like are making the biggest impact.
- 8:46So one comment on a video from five days ago says, hey, so my
- 8:5013 year old niece and her four friends woke me up at 7:00 AM to
- 8:53ask me to take them to Staples to pick up the mugs.
- 8:56They ordered at some point last night.
- 8:58Where'd they get a credit card? No idea.
- 9:00Is the store open yet? Certainly not.
- 9:01So congratulations on your spokeswomanship and also why
- 9:05someone else wrote I love seeing you low key enjoy the process of
- 9:08the labor you perform next time before showing us.
- 9:11Don't do free advertising for your job though.
- 9:13From what I've seen, if they care at all, they'll punish you
- 9:15down the line for it instead of thanking you.
- 9:17And then she responded. I've been in contact with PR.
- 9:19They love me. So Needless to say, it sounds
- 9:23like she's basically single handedly changing the way that
- 9:25young people think about Staples right now.
- 9:27She's bringing people in store and she's giving them this
- 9:30amazing PR. She needs to be the face of
- 9:33Staples. They need to do like a big
- 9:35digital campaign with her as the face, like as an ambassador.
- 9:38I'm sure they have something in the works for her.
- 9:40But people would lose their minds if they saw that she was
- 9:43actually getting paid by Staples, Not just, you know, to
- 9:45do her retail job, but in like an influencer capacity because
- 9:49of all this genuine like organic ambassadorship that she's been
- 9:52doing. I love it.
- 9:53This is amazing employee generated content.
- 9:56And I know that workplace and employee generated content is a
- 9:59bit controversial. And I totally understand that
- 10:02because I mean, we've talked about different case studies
- 10:04here and there. But like the TBH skin care
- 10:06situation where they had a bunch of employees in a video like the
- 10:08Gen. Z boss and a mini TikTok, which
- 10:10was like super harmless and fun. And then it landed on the
- 10:14manosphere algorithm and Andrew Tate commented on it.
- 10:17And then that got pushed out even more.
- 10:18And it's like that is putting in theory like your employees at
- 10:21risk. So I know it is a bit of like a
- 10:23controversial strategy, but this one is seems to be completely
- 10:27organic and the brand is not trying to squash it or control
- 10:30it because I feel like that happens a lot.
- 10:31OK, so the next story that I have for you guys today is I'm
- 10:35going to cover a couple things that happened around influencers
- 10:39and the halftime show, the Bad Bunny halftime show.
- 10:42I know I touched on the halftime show on Tuesday, but I like
- 10:45hadn't absorbed it yet. It had literally just happened.
- 10:47And anyways, all this stuff has happened since then.
- 10:50So I'm going to talk about how Alex Earl has addressed the
- 10:53backlash around her participating in Bad Bunny's
- 10:55halftime show. And then I'm also going to very
- 10:57quickly talk about Jake Paul and how he claimed to get hacked on
- 11:03Twitter after criticizing Bad Bunny's halftime show.
- 11:06OK, so as we know Alex Earl, she was dancing during the
- 11:10performance in the casita in that section of the halftime
- 11:13show. She was dancing alongside big
- 11:15names like Cardi B, Pedro Pascal, Jessica Alba.
- 11:18Now, there has been a lot of backlash over this.
- 11:21So many feel like Alex was kind of like a weird inclusion
- 11:25because she's not connected to the music or the culture in any
- 11:28meaningful way. I mean, at least as far as we
- 11:30know. But more than that, people were
- 11:31also upset because Alex has been, I suppose you could say,
- 11:36intentionally ambiguous or even silent about where she stands on
- 11:40many issues that Bad Bunny was highlighting through his
- 11:43performance. Now, Alex is one of those
- 11:45creators who is constantly accused of being MAGA, and for
- 11:48good reason. Her family appears to be mega.
- 11:51And she also did do this TikTok live that people bring up a lot
- 11:55years ago where she said I used to be like, Oh yeah, go Trump,
- 12:00obviously indicating that she used to support him.
- 12:02However, as she's become a lot more famous, Alex has been quite
- 12:05quiet on where she stands on things politically and also
- 12:09where she stands on many social issues and human rights issues.
- 12:12And I totally understand that people change and grow and I'm a
- 12:15totally different person than I was 10 years ago.
- 12:18So I, I totally understand that. I will say though, I think most
- 12:22people, if they were like staunchly anti MAGA and anti
- 12:26against everything that's going on right now and they were
- 12:28constantly being accused of being MAGA by their audience,
- 12:32they would probably let their audience know that that's not
- 12:35the case. Anyways, Alex did respond to a
- 12:37comment on her video about the Super Bowl.
- 12:39So somebody wrote you've never once used your platform and
- 12:42voice for the messages Bad Bunny sends.
- 12:44This is unbelievable and undeserved.
- 12:47And then Alex responded, I have pink heart.
- 12:50And being invited to do this was such an incredible experience
- 12:53and so special. The I have with the pink heart.
- 12:56Does that not remind you guys of Donatella Versace with the heart
- 12:59Like I have, I have, I don't know.
- 13:02That just reminds me of Donatella Versace heart.
- 13:04Like there's just something about that I have because it's
- 13:07like so serious and this person is expressing distress around
- 13:10like very real horrible things happening in the world right now
- 13:14and in their country. And she's just like, I have
- 13:16heart. OK.
- 13:17So Alex, I assume what she's referring to is she did post
- 13:20about ice in Minnesota recently. She re shared an infographic
- 13:24that was a carousel about how to help in Minnesota.
- 13:26So I assume that is what she's referencing here.
- 13:29I guess with Alex, I think we need to let go of the fact that
- 13:32like she is going to address any of this.
- 13:34Like she may or may not be MAGA, she may or may not support ICE.
- 13:37Like we don't really know where she stands on things.
- 13:39And I think that's probably partly by design, right?
- 13:42She doesn't want to isolate some of her fans, her followers,
- 13:44whatever. And I'm sure that's like a
- 13:45business decision. But I also think it's probably
- 13:49because mostly what she stands for is herself.
- 13:53She does foster dogs, and she did found that nonprofit in
- 13:56Miami that provides meals for people in need.
- 13:58So she aligns herself with those causes.
- 14:01But I think when it comes to opportunities to further her
- 14:04career, her wealth, her influence, she's going to take
- 14:07them every time, even if they don't align with her politically
- 14:11and socially and all of that. And I understand why a lot of
- 14:15people can't accept that or can't forgive that.
- 14:18Now, David Gruben, who is a Miami restaurateur, he works
- 14:21with a lot of celebrities, including Bad Bunny.
- 14:24There were already like rumors that he was the reason why Alex
- 14:27got involved because I think he's producing their Netflix
- 14:29show. I believe that was the
- 14:30connection story. I didn't actually write that
- 14:32down, but he told Page 6 that Alex was invited to the casita
- 14:36because, quote, Bad Bunny wanted to be inclusive of all,
- 14:38especially for the Casita. He wanted to show a little bit
- 14:42of everything. And I think having her be the
- 14:44face of Gen. Z and so much of America, I just
- 14:47think it's a great thing. Do you guys think Alex Earl is
- 14:50the face of America, of so much of America?
- 14:53OK. And then the Jake Paul thing.
- 14:54I really don't want to make this, like, a full story.
- 14:57He's basically trying to pull like the whole my Twitter was
- 15:00hacked thing. So he tweeted purposefully
- 15:03turning off the halftime show. This was obviously during the
- 15:05Super Bowl. Let's rally together and show
- 15:07big corporations they can't just do whatever they want without
- 15:09consequences, which equals viewership for them.
- 15:13You are their benefit. Realize you have the power.
- 15:15Turn off this half time a fake American citizen performing who
- 15:19publicly hates America. I cannot support that.
- 15:21So obviously that's incredibly bigoted and he was getting
- 15:24backlash for that, but more so he was actually getting backlash
- 15:27because he lives in Puerto Rico. So he was getting so much heat.
- 15:31He then tweeted the problem with my tweet is the word fake being
- 15:35misinterpreted. He's not a fake citizen,
- 15:37obviously, because he's Puerto Rican and I love Puerto Rico and
- 15:40all Americans who support the country more so is fake because
- 15:43of his values and criticism of our great country.
- 15:46That also didn't go over well. So then he tweeted to clarify, I
- 15:49wasn't calling anyone a fake citizen because they're from
- 15:51Puerto Rico. I live in Puerto Rico and I love
- 15:53Puerto Rico. I've used my platform to support
- 15:56Puerto Rico time and time again and always and will always do
- 15:59so. But if you're publicly
- 16:00criticizing ICE who are doing their job and openly hating on
- 16:03America, I'm going to speak on it period.
- 16:05That's the same reason I called out Hunter Hess.
- 16:08If you benefit from a country and the platform it gives you,
- 16:11but publicly disrespected at the same same time.
- 16:13That's what I mean by being a fake citizen.
- 16:15And I agree, love is more powerful than hate.
- 16:18Love America. That's such a weird way to look
- 16:20at this. Like you can't control where
- 16:23you're born. So just because you're born in a
- 16:25country where you don't align with everything going on
- 16:27politically, socially, all of that, you shouldn't go after
- 16:32your dreams and become a world famous singer because you're
- 16:37benefiting from the American public, the American system, the
- 16:40American dollar, whatever. You can't control that.
- 16:43Only people who 100% agree with the government are allowed to
- 16:47like chase their dreams and make it and benefit.
- 16:50That is such a weird stance. OK, but again, it didn't go over
- 16:53well. So then he tweeted, guys, I love
- 16:57bad Bunny. I don't know what happened on my
- 16:58Twitter last night. Question mark, question mark.
- 17:00What the fuck? And then he changed his ex bio
- 17:04to Benito #1 fan. All right, the last story that I
- 17:07have for you guys today, this is a mini scroll story.
- 17:12If there was ever a mini scroll story.
- 17:15A Justin Bieber fan account is alleging that Scooter Braun
- 17:18manipulated her to control Justin.
- 17:22So Lauren Portis, the owner of the iconic Justin Bieber update
- 17:26account jbcrew.com, JBC for short, has come out about her
- 17:31alleged experiences dealing with Scooter Braun.
- 17:34For context, JBC was extremely influential and famous among
- 17:38Stan, Twitter, and chronically online believers through the 20
- 17:40tens. And to give you a bit of context
- 17:43on just how powerful JBC was, Lauren and members of the JBC
- 17:48social media team were invited to attend the iHeartRadio Awards
- 17:51multiple times, as well as other award shows like the Billboard
- 17:55Music Awards. Lauren was also repeatedly
- 17:57tapped for interviews by media outlets such as MTV Brand Watch,
- 18:01Capital FM, BBC Radio 1, Refinery 29, and more.
- 18:06Lauren was also just thirteen years old when she created this
- 18:08account and ended up building it to a whole social media team.
- 18:11According to social stats that she has shared on LinkedIn,
- 18:14across different social media platforms, JBC had reached over
- 18:171,000,000 followers total. Now she's in her mid to late 20s
- 18:21and Lauren has taken a step back from the account, but she does
- 18:24continue to post on social media about Justin Bieber.
- 18:27Recently, she took to acts with this bombshell, so she shared an
- 18:30alleged screenshot of a message from Scooter Braun, who was
- 18:34obviously Justin's manager at the time.
- 18:36The message read from Scooter allegedly put up an image of
- 18:39Justin on stage holding someone's hand in caption.
- 18:42Justin never lets us down. He is always there for us.
- 18:45Love you Justin. To add more context, Lauren
- 18:48wrote a throwback to when Scooter was trying to get me to
- 18:52get Justin to. She didn't write not but I
- 18:54assume she meant to say not cancel his tour back in 2017
- 18:58lol. As in like trying to get a fan
- 19:01account to make Justin feel guilty because he was about to
- 19:04cancel the final fourteen shows of the purpose tour.
- 19:08And obviously if this is true, this is incredibly exploitative
- 19:10of Scooter with Justin. Which I guess is probably no
- 19:13surprise from what we know about what Justin has to say about
- 19:16Scooter and what we know about Scooter Braun from Taylor Swift
- 19:19and just in general the industry.
- 19:21However, it's also very exploitative of Lauren.
- 19:24Like she was a teenage girl who would have done anything to get
- 19:27close to her favorite artist and his manager, his world famous
- 19:30manager, is messaging her and telling her to post things.
- 19:33It's so crazy. If this is true, this is crazy.
- 19:36And then she also took to her Instagram stories to share more
- 19:39alleged interactions between herself and Scooter.
- 19:42So she talked about how Scooter repeatedly said he would make
- 19:45JVC quote an official fan account, which did not end up
- 19:49happening. As she wrote quote, once a
- 19:51businessman, always a businessman.
- 19:53Everything was false promises with him.
- 19:55Can't tell you how much he went on about.
- 19:56I'll make you the official fan page.
- 19:59She also alleged that Scooter was almost trying to control
- 20:02what they were posting on JBC. She shared a screenshot of her
- 20:05missed calls on her story writing quote.
- 20:07When he was calling me and telling me to post things to
- 20:09make Justin feel bad, he wanted us to post videos of little kids
- 20:12being excited to see Justin on tour so he wouldn't cancel the
- 20:15tour. Now, other members of JBC have
- 20:18gone on to corroborate Lauren's story and share their own
- 20:21experiences. For example, 1 user named Cindy
- 20:24wrote quote. I was part of JBC when this
- 20:26happened and never thought this would see the light of day.
- 20:29The way he wanted us to post certain things to convince
- 20:31Justin to not cancel the tour since he followed us on IG was
- 20:34insane and still is to this day. Scooter has been trash.
- 20:37Another alleged member of JBC, Elena.
- 20:41She posted this on her Instagram.
- 20:43I think it is. Yeah.
- 20:43Her Instagram stories she wrote. For context.
- 20:46If you don't know, I've been involved with JBC since around
- 20:482014 ish. I honestly don't remember the
- 20:50exact year. I feel like some people are
- 20:52misconstruing Lauren's words, especially under the one
- 20:54Instagram post Scooter boasts. Definitely tried to control
- 20:57things that we posted for years. Any little thing we posted that
- 21:01he didn't like, he would immediately message us to take
- 21:03it down. But that doesn't mean that we
- 21:05always listened. If there was a seemingly logical
- 21:07reason behind it, yes we would delete the post.
- 21:10Otherwise we ignored him. There was ultimately no reason
- 21:12to listen to him. This applies to Scooter trying
- 21:15to get us to guilt trip JB and to continuing the purpose tour.
- 21:18It was a whole discussion we had and while we were almost all
- 21:20literal children at the time, we still knew it was wrong and
- 21:23didn't do it. Honestly I'm really impressed by
- 21:26the idea of a bunch of, you know, 141516 year olds getting
- 21:31messages from Scooter Braun. Like from somebody who is like
- 21:34literally the closest person to their favorite person in the
- 21:38world, Justin Bieber, and ignoring his request.
- 21:42I love that. What a power move.
- 21:44So yeah, safe to say the Beliebers are very much
- 21:46believing Lauren and the JVC crew.
- 21:49I guess I had never really thought about it that much, but
- 21:52it makes perfect sense that managers and people who work
- 21:56alongside these stars are working with these fan accounts.
- 22:00Or I wouldn't actually say working in many cases, probably
- 22:03feeding them information and manipulating them.
- 22:05And I suppose we saw similar things.
- 22:07Why do I have to bring everything back to Drama Geddon,
- 22:10my favorite topic. I we saw similar accusations
- 22:14around Armageddon where drama channels and even just like not
- 22:18even drama channels, but channels that covered like the
- 22:20influencer beauty space. We're getting allegedly fed
- 22:23information from some of the biggest players in all of these
- 22:26big feuds, right? And things that were happening
- 22:28on YouTube and all the drama and everything.
- 22:30And that was really shifting the narrative that we saw play out
- 22:34because of this alleged information that they were
- 22:37getting fed and they were taking it.
- 22:39Because of course, I want to be damning with like Jeffrey Star
- 22:41if I'm a huge fan of the space and I don't fully understand the
- 22:45harm that he's causing yet, you know, So I think it probably
- 22:48happens more than we think. Anyways, guys, that's it for
