- 2:11Speaker 3: You've got two possibilities to work on. Suspicion of suicide,

- 2:48Speaker 4: Dragnet is the story of your police force in action.
- 2:56Speaker 2: It was Wednesday, February sixth. That was cold in Los Angeles.
- 2:59Speaker 2: We're working the day out a homicide detail. My partner's
- 3:02Speaker 2: Ben Romero, the boss of stat Brown, Chief of Detectives.
- 3:04Speaker 2: My name is Friday. I was on the way back
- 3:06Speaker 2: from the record Bureau and it was eleven eighteen am
- 3:08Speaker 2: when I got to Room forty two, Homicide Joe Hid.
- 3:13Speaker 2: She show up, Ye yeah, a couple of minutes ago.
- 3:15Speaker 2: She's waiting for us now in the next room or
- 3:17Speaker 2: did you talk to her at all?
- 3:18Speaker 5: No, seems to be a nice enough woman. I don't
- 3:20Speaker 5: know how much help she's gonna be. Yeah, go ahead, Yeah,
- 3:27Speaker 5: Miss Banner'd like to have you meet my partner, Sergeant
- 3:29Speaker 5: Friday Joe. This is Miss Benner.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Hello.
- 3:31Speaker 6: I'm sorry I wasn't home when you stopped by yesterday's sergeant.
- 3:34Speaker 6: I got the card you left, though, I called him
- 3:36Speaker 6: as soon as I got home.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Well, thanks for coming in, Miss Banner. We have a
- 3:39Speaker 2: few questions we'd like to ask. You won't take very long.
- 3:41Speaker 5: We have a communication from a Lattice Dylan back in
- 3:43Speaker 5: New York. Miss Bannart's about her brother at Chester Dylan.
- 3:46Speaker 5: We understand you rented his home from him. I don't
- 3:48Speaker 5: know it's on Avenue, mister Dylan.
- 3:50Speaker 6: My yes, I've got a two year lease on the house.
- 3:51Speaker 6: I rented it Friming last November.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Well, according to the letter we got from mister Dylan's sisters,
- 3:55Speaker 2: she's worried about him. She hasn't heard from him in
- 3:57Speaker 2: some time. Have you any idea where we could contact Well?
- 4:00Speaker 6: The last I heard he left on a trip to
- 4:01Speaker 6: New York. That was about eight weeks ago, i'd say.
- 4:04Speaker 6: You see, I usually sent a check for the rent
- 4:06Speaker 6: the apartment he had here, and when he left on
- 4:08Speaker 6: his trip, he told me to hold on to the
- 4:09Speaker 6: rent checks and he'd collect him when he got back.
- 4:11Speaker 5: How long did he say he'd be gone, I don't.
- 4:13Speaker 6: Remember, definitely. I think he said four or five months.
- 4:16Speaker 2: He didn't leave any forwarding address, any place you could
- 4:18Speaker 2: contact him back east.
- 4:19Speaker 6: No, he didn't. He just wanted to get away, didn't
- 4:21Speaker 6: want to be bothered with anyone. He wasn't feeling very well,
- 4:24Speaker 6: very depressed. Poor man.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Well, why was that, ma'am?
- 4:26Speaker 6: Do you know his wife's died just a few months ago?
- 4:28Speaker 5: You know, no, man, we didn't know.
- 4:30Speaker 2: What we got from his sister was that she hadn't
- 4:32Speaker 2: heard from Dylan.
- 4:32Speaker 5: She was worrying. She didn't give us any other information.
- 4:36Speaker 6: Yes, missus, Dylan died in last September. I think it
- 4:39Speaker 6: was poor man felt terrible about it, couldn't seem to
- 4:43Speaker 6: get over it. That's why he rented the house to me.
- 4:45Speaker 6: Reminded him too much of her. Yes, I understand, lovely
- 4:48Speaker 6: home they have. Mister Dolan said he really didn't want
- 4:51Speaker 6: to rent it, but he couldn't standing alone in the
- 4:52Speaker 6: house was a large place, you know.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Yes, ma'am. We checked with the people living in the house.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Now we understand you least the place to them. Last
- 4:58Speaker 2: month I stub least.
- 5:00Speaker 6: Yes, you see, it just got too big for me.
- 5:02Speaker 6: It was nice at first, but it got to be
- 5:04Speaker 6: an awfu lot of work. I rented to this family
- 5:06Speaker 6: and took a smaller house on the street.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Would you happen to know any of mister Dylon's friends
- 5:10Speaker 5: in the city, Miss Banner, anyone we could contact, he
- 5:12Speaker 5: might know where we'd be locat him. I don't know.
- 5:14Speaker 6: We didn't seem to have any friends, see, and his
- 5:16Speaker 6: wife had only been in the city a year before
- 5:18Speaker 6: she died.
- 5:19Speaker 5: He was retired, you know, Yes, man, we talked to
- 5:21Speaker 5: some of the neighbors out there. They couldn't tell us
- 5:22Speaker 5: much about him.
- 5:23Speaker 6: Maybe some of the people he did business with might
- 5:26Speaker 6: know something. If he tried the neighborhood bank out there.
- 5:28Speaker 6: I know that's where mister Dollan had his account.
- 5:30Speaker 2: No, man, we haven't yet.
- 5:31Speaker 6: Well, I can give you the bank's address. It's about
- 5:33Speaker 6: all though.
- 5:34Speaker 5: That's the only contact, you know.
- 5:35Speaker 6: I'm afraid so, yes, I didn't know much about mister
- 5:38Speaker 6: Dolan's private affairs. Whenever I talked to him, it seemed
- 5:41Speaker 6: the only thing he had on his mind was his
- 5:43Speaker 6: wife's death. It couldn't seem to get over it. It
- 5:46Speaker 6: seemed like he didn't want to get over it.
- 5:47Speaker 2: You mentioned that when you leased his home, mister Dylan
- 5:50Speaker 2: took an apartment. Do you happen to have that address
- 5:52Speaker 2: with Banner?
- 5:52Speaker 6: Well, I don't have it with me now, but I
- 5:54Speaker 6: have it at home. I can call in and give
- 5:56Speaker 6: it to you if you like.
- 5:57Speaker 5: If you would for you certainly, well, thank you very much,
- 5:59Speaker 5: Miss Benning. You have our card, and when you hear
- 6:01Speaker 5: anything at all from mister dinnan, we'd appreciate it if
- 6:03Speaker 5: you could call.
- 6:03Speaker 6: And surely I'll call you right away. Do you think
- 6:06Speaker 6: something could have happened to him?
- 6:07Speaker 2: Well as possible, we don't know. All we have is
- 6:09Speaker 2: a letter from his sister.
- 6:10Speaker 6: Does seem kind of strange, doesn't It wasn't feeling too well.
- 6:14Speaker 6: I wondered why he hadn't contacted me about sending the
- 6:16Speaker 6: rent money to him. He was such a nice man,
- 6:19Speaker 6: mister Dylan. I certainly hope nothing's happened to him.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Well, you say it was very depressed about his wife's death. Man,
- 6:24Speaker 2: would you say that it was getting to be a
- 6:26Speaker 2: little abnormal with him?
- 6:27Speaker 5: Maybe?
- 6:27Speaker 6: Well, I wouldn't know about that, sergeant, But I didn't know.
- 6:30Speaker 6: He brooded about it all the time, he felt that
- 6:32Speaker 6: he'd lost everything, didn't seem to want to go on.
- 6:35Speaker 5: Uh huh. He ever give an indication that maybe he
- 6:37Speaker 5: might take his own life. I mean, all this brooding
- 6:40Speaker 5: over his wife.
- 6:41Speaker 6: Well, no, nothing definite, just depressed and moody all the time. Oh,
- 6:46Speaker 6: now that I remember. The last time I saw him,
- 6:47Speaker 6: he did say something kind of funny.
- 6:49Speaker 2: What was that.
- 6:50Speaker 6: It was the day before he left. We were talking
- 6:52Speaker 6: about the rent money and I asked him if I
- 6:53Speaker 6: couldn't send it to him. He got kind of a
- 6:55Speaker 6: strange look on his face. Yeah, he said, where I'm going,
- 6:58Speaker 6: I won't need the money.
- 7:01Speaker 2: The day before we called on Lucille Banner for an interview,
- 7:04Speaker 2: a letter had been received from a Miss Gladys Dlon
- 7:06Speaker 2: in Elmira, New York. Her request was routine. It was
- 7:10Speaker 2: one of thousands of similar letters received every year by
- 7:13Speaker 2: police departments all over the country. Each one of them
- 7:15Speaker 2: has to be worked out to the satisfaction of all
- 7:18Speaker 2: parties concerned, the person who's reported missing and the person
- 7:21Speaker 2: looking for them. It's an enormous job, requiring thousands of
- 7:24Speaker 2: man hours annually. Like the dozens of other investigations handled
- 7:28Speaker 2: by the police officers, some of the men happily, some
- 7:30Speaker 2: of them in tragedy. Whatever the result, the finding of
- 7:33Speaker 2: a lost person is just as important a function of
- 7:35Speaker 2: your local police department as any other investigation. Gladys Dylan
- 7:39Speaker 2: hadn't heard from her brother recently. She was worried about him.
- 7:42Speaker 2: She asked us to investigate. Our initial interview with Lucille Banner,
- 7:46Speaker 2: the woman who had rented Chester Dillon's home, failed to
- 7:49Speaker 2: yield much of a lead as to us whereabouts. The
- 7:51Speaker 2: only source of additional information she could offer was the
- 7:53Speaker 2: neighborhood bank where Dylan had his account. One o'clock that afternoon,
- 7:57Speaker 2: Ben and I drove out to interview the manager of
- 7:59Speaker 2: the bank. Think I'm mister Harrison. Yes, that's right.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Mister Dylan's Pedd's account with us ever since he came
- 8:06Speaker 5: to Los Angeles.
- 8:07Speaker 7: I know him quite well. Is it something you'd like to.
- 8:08Speaker 5: Know about him?
- 8:09Speaker 2: Yes, sir, there is.
- 8:10Speaker 5: We had a request from his sister in New York
- 8:12Speaker 5: she'd like to locate. I'm pretty sure his account is
- 8:15Speaker 5: still open here. Matter of fact, I'm positivity at this moment.
- 8:18Speaker 5: I'll have one of the quirts get him fired.
- 8:19Speaker 2: All right.
- 8:19Speaker 5: I think it was sure. I had to reminds me.
- 8:22Speaker 5: I almost forgot.
- 8:23Speaker 2: What's that.
- 8:24Speaker 5: I've got to get to the bank to morew for
- 8:25Speaker 5: sure payment all my cars. The day passed you already
- 8:28Speaker 5: when he got two Mayman's left, when we we were
- 8:29Speaker 5: doing fine. I got another eight months ago. I'm not
- 8:32Speaker 5: so fine. Two more famous to go, and now the
- 8:34Speaker 5: wife once a knew and never failure. Here we are, sergeant,
- 8:37Speaker 5: Just as I thought, mister Dylan's account is still open
- 8:40Speaker 5: for her.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Is there been any recent deposits or withdrawals on the account?
- 8:44Speaker 7: I never look here, Uh huh, just as.
- 8:49Speaker 5: I thought nothing Since he left on his trip. That
- 8:51Speaker 5: last withdrawal date was November twenty seventh. He mentioned to
- 8:54Speaker 5: you that he was going on on trip, did he yes?
- 8:56Speaker 5: I think he said he was going back to New York,
- 8:57Speaker 5: more or less a vacation trip.
- 9:00Speaker 7: His wife died recently. He didn't take it too well.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Yes, we understand. Did he leave any instructions about his
- 9:05Speaker 2: account with you, mister Harrison. Then he addressed you could
- 9:07Speaker 2: contact him out if you had to.
- 9:08Speaker 5: No, he didn't leave any instructions with me, no address,
- 9:12Speaker 5: just a vacation trip. He said he didn't expect to
- 9:14Speaker 5: be gone too long. Did he mention how long it
- 9:16Speaker 5: would be?
- 9:17Speaker 2: Five or six weeks? I think that's what he said.
- 9:19Speaker 5: I happened to talk to him about it because at
- 9:21Speaker 5: the time he made it quite a sizable withdrawal.
- 9:23Speaker 7: I thought maybe he was a little unhappy.
- 9:25Speaker 5: With our service.
- 9:26Speaker 2: How much was it withdraws?
- 9:28Speaker 5: See here it is November twenty seventh. He withdrew twenty
- 9:32Speaker 5: four hundred dollars.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Was that in cash or in travelers checks?
- 9:35Speaker 6: You know?
- 9:38Speaker 5: I show to hear that it was in cash. Mister Harrison.
- 9:40Speaker 5: You said a minute ago that you knew mister didn't
- 9:42Speaker 5: pretty well.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Yes, that's right.
- 9:44Speaker 5: He used to stop and chat with me whenever he'd
- 9:46Speaker 5: come in the bank. That was usually once a week.
- 9:48Speaker 5: I didn't know him socially, though. You mentioned he seemed
- 9:50Speaker 5: to take his wife's death pretty hard. Yeah, what would
- 9:53Speaker 5: you say his mental condition was last time doing all right?
- 9:57Speaker 5: I'd say just after his wife's death. He wasn't in
- 9:59Speaker 5: very good shape. Brooded about it quite a bit, and
- 10:02Speaker 5: he began to pull out of it. Seemed to be
- 10:04Speaker 5: in a fairly good friend of mind, planned its vacation.
- 10:07Speaker 7: He was looking forward to it.
- 10:09Speaker 2: And I see, why do you ask something wrong?
- 10:11Speaker 1: No?
- 10:11Speaker 2: Sure, not that we know of. Routine checked, that's about
- 10:13Speaker 2: the size. Does Dylan have any other real estate besides
- 10:17Speaker 2: the house on Rosson Avenue? Would you have know that?
- 10:19Speaker 8: Not?
- 10:20Speaker 7: To my knowledge.
- 10:21Speaker 5: No, he has no other business connections in Los Angeles.
- 10:24Speaker 5: Here are all the references right here. See most of
- 10:28Speaker 5: them are charge accounts and so forth. I remember the
- 10:31Speaker 5: time he opened his account with us.
- 10:32Speaker 7: He told me he was retired. He and his wife
- 10:34Speaker 7: came out here for their health.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Do they have any relatives out here? Do you know, Michai?
- 10:38Speaker 5: No, from what I understand, both of their families are
- 10:40Speaker 5: in the East. You don't have any children, according to
- 10:42Speaker 5: his application, very few relatives.
- 10:45Speaker 2: And since Dylan was in here last November to make
- 10:48Speaker 2: that withdrawal, and you've had no communications from him at all?
- 10:51Speaker 5: No, sir, I haven't what seems to be the trouble.
- 10:54Speaker 7: Do you have an idea something might be wrong?
- 10:56Speaker 5: Nothing definite. No, we've been told about his feeling depressed
- 10:59Speaker 5: over his wife's death, and there was some indication he
- 11:01Speaker 5: might possibly have done away with himself after what chtold.
- 11:04Speaker 2: This doesn't seem too lightly.
- 11:06Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 11:06Speaker 2: I wouldn't like to commit myself. As I say.
- 11:08Speaker 7: He didn't seem to be getting over it. I didn't
- 11:11Speaker 7: know him.
- 11:11Speaker 2: That well though.
- 11:12Speaker 5: It might be entirely possibly he was devoted to missus Fillon.
- 11:16Speaker 5: Maybe he could have picked his own life. I don't know.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Well, it leaves a big question to answered. Let's say,
- 11:21Speaker 2: why do you need the twenty four hundred dollars to
- 11:23Speaker 2: do it? One t five PM we continued interviewing the
- 11:28Speaker 2: bank manager, mister Harrison, but he was unable to come
- 11:30Speaker 2: up with any further leads. Before we left the bank,
- 11:33Speaker 2: he gave us a complete list of all of Chester
- 11:35Speaker 2: Dillon's references. We gave him our card and he told
- 11:38Speaker 2: us he would pass along immediately any information he might
- 11:40Speaker 2: get on the whereabouts of mister Dylan. One five we
- 11:44Speaker 2: went back to the office, where we got a call
- 11:46Speaker 2: from Lucille Banner. She gave us Dylan's last known address
- 11:49Speaker 2: and we drove out to check. It was an apartment
- 11:52Speaker 2: court in the Pico Crenshaw area. We talked to the
- 11:54Speaker 2: manager and she told us that Dylan had moved out
- 11:56Speaker 2: three months before, on November twenty second. He told her
- 12:00Speaker 2: that he was moving in with a close friend of his,
- 12:02Speaker 2: and he gave her his forwarding address. It turned out
- 12:05Speaker 2: to be a single story framed cottage located in one
- 12:07Speaker 2: of the older residential districts of the city. The name
- 12:10Speaker 2: on the mail box read Raymond L. Shaffer. We rang
- 12:13Speaker 2: the bell and a man who identified himself as Raymond
- 12:16Speaker 2: Shafer ushered us into a small living room. He told
- 12:19Speaker 2: us that he was from the same town in the
- 12:20Speaker 2: east that the Dylans came from, and that he was
- 12:22Speaker 2: a longtime friend of theirs.
- 12:23Speaker 8: No, I haven't seen Chester for months. Last November, I
- 12:26Speaker 8: think it was the last time I saw him.
- 12:28Speaker 5: You say at that time, Dylan was living in the
- 12:29Speaker 5: apartment done in the Friends show areamsh Yeah, that's right.
- 12:32Speaker 2: You mean he never came here to live with you. No,
- 12:35Speaker 2: it's just like I told you before.
- 12:36Speaker 8: He talked about moving in here with me, but he
- 12:38Speaker 8: never did.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Haven't any idea where he is. Well. He gave your
- 12:40Speaker 2: name here as a forwarding address, Shaffer. If you've been
- 12:42Speaker 2: getting his mail.
- 12:43Speaker 8: Yeah, as a matter of fact, I have. He told
- 12:45Speaker 8: me he was going to do that. Never came to
- 12:47Speaker 8: pick it up, though.
- 12:48Speaker 5: Seemed funny to me.
- 12:48Speaker 2: You're still getting his man here.
- 12:50Speaker 5: Is that right?
- 12:50Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 12:50Speaker 8: It's still coming. Not much of it, may be a
- 12:52Speaker 8: letter a week, mostly builds and advertisment.
- 12:55Speaker 2: This list of names you've given us, sir, these are
- 12:57Speaker 2: all the people in the east. Mister Dylon was acquainted
- 12:59Speaker 2: with people in attacking his trip back there, that's all.
- 13:02Speaker 2: I'm as far as I know.
- 13:03Speaker 7: He hadn't been back there yet, though.
- 13:05Speaker 2: How do you know that I've got a letter.
- 13:06Speaker 8: From my sister Gert a couple of days ago at
- 13:08Speaker 8: Chester was in town. Girt would have known about it.
- 13:10Speaker 8: He would have been sure to stop buy and see it.
- 13:12Speaker 8: I wish I could help you tell you the truth.
- 13:14Speaker 8: I'll get a little worried about it myself.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Well, just have one more question, mister Shaever, you know
- 13:18Speaker 2: if mister Dylan was in the habit of carrying large
- 13:20Speaker 2: sums of money around with him.
- 13:22Speaker 8: No, I don't think so. Chester was pretty cautious that way.
- 13:25Speaker 8: He wasn't too free with a dollar.
- 13:26Speaker 2: You know, wold you'd happen to know if he had
- 13:28Speaker 2: a large sum of money with him the last time
- 13:30Speaker 2: you saw him. No, if he did, he didn't mention it.
- 13:32Speaker 5: I see. You can't think of anything else that might
- 13:35Speaker 5: give us a leader on mister Dinnon's worry about anything
- 13:37Speaker 5: at all.
- 13:38Speaker 8: I think I've told you everything. I wish it was
- 13:40Speaker 8: something I could tell you that it helped. I sure
- 13:42Speaker 8: hope nothing's happened to him.
- 13:43Speaker 5: Yes, sir, And would you mind showing us that in
- 13:45Speaker 5: there you're holding for dinner flee?
- 13:47Speaker 8: Oh sure, sir, he's right over here in the desk.
- 13:54Speaker 5: Here you are. That's all.
- 13:55Speaker 2: I thank you?
- 13:58Speaker 5: Anything, Joe or not much?
- 14:01Speaker 2: Bills circulars. There's one with a New York post may
- 14:05Speaker 2: Al Maya, probably from his sister. Another one only three
- 14:09Speaker 2: days old from the Union Department store. A couple more
- 14:12Speaker 2: earlier dates on him. That's about it.
- 14:14Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll copy down and return that. Addresses on fine,
- 14:18Speaker 5: mister Shaffer. Yeah, this suitcase for the desk here, initials
- 14:22Speaker 5: on it, cold Yeah, CLD.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Is that your bag? Shaver?
- 14:27Speaker 8: Oh no, I forgot to tell you a chest to
- 14:29Speaker 8: left that here one day?
- 14:30Speaker 2: Huh?
- 14:30Speaker 5: How was there? Well, that was one day just.
- 14:32Speaker 8: Before he was going to leave on his vacation he
- 14:35Speaker 8: brought over here and said he'd like to leave it
- 14:37Speaker 8: with me.
- 14:37Speaker 5: Forgot to mention it today.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Do you bring anything else with him?
- 14:40Speaker 8: Yeah, he brought another suitcase with him, just like this
- 14:42Speaker 8: one I got in the other room. He said he
- 14:45Speaker 8: wanted to leave him here while he was on his vacation.
- 14:47Speaker 8: I'm sorry I forgot to mention it, or.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Maybe you forgot something else, Shaver? What most people take
- 14:51Speaker 2: their suitcases on a trip, don't they? Two thirty pm
- 14:58Speaker 2: we continued questioning Raymond Shaffer. We opened the two suitcases
- 15:01Speaker 2: labeled with the initials of Chester Dyllon and found an
- 15:03Speaker 2: assortment of personal items which Shaffer told us belonged to
- 15:06Speaker 2: Dylan and his late wife. Small pictures, cigarette boxes, books,
- 15:10Speaker 2: similar articles, which apparently would not be taken on a
- 15:12Speaker 2: vacation trip. None of them were of any great value.
- 15:16Speaker 2: After we left Shafer's home, we checked him through R
- 15:18Speaker 2: and I and found he had no criminal record. We
- 15:20Speaker 2: checked further with friends and acquaintances of both men and
- 15:23Speaker 2: found nothing to indicate that Shaffer was in any way
- 15:25Speaker 2: involved in the disappearance of Chester Dylon. Three point thirty
- 15:28Speaker 2: pm we called the office and found that there's been
- 15:31Speaker 2: no answer so far to the broadcast and missing person's
- 15:34Speaker 2: bullets that we'd gotten out on Dylan. We started checking
- 15:37Speaker 2: your references given us by the bank. First was the
- 15:39Speaker 2: Union Department store. It was located on Main Street in
- 15:43Speaker 2: the south end of town. We checked with a credit
- 15:45Speaker 2: department to see what information we could get from them.
- 15:49Speaker 6: Yes, here's the fire on the Dylan's right here, mister
- 15:52Speaker 6: Ellan s Jay on Rushton Avenue. What information would you like?
- 15:57Speaker 2: So we're trying to locate mister Dylon, ma'am. If you
- 15:59Speaker 2: had any recent change of address on that account.
- 16:01Speaker 5: No, we haven't.
- 16:02Speaker 6: If they moved, you know.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Well we believe so. We don't know his present address.
- 16:05Speaker 6: So we do have an outstanding bill of theirs. I
- 16:09Speaker 6: noticed them several form letters. Have been trying to contact
- 16:12Speaker 6: them ourselves.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Have there been any recent charges on that account?
- 16:15Speaker 6: You know, nothing too recent. No, last charge was made
- 16:21Speaker 6: on December fifth, Yes, Thursday, December fifth.
- 16:25Speaker 5: That's a couple of weeks after we disappeared.
- 16:27Speaker 2: You yeah, sorry, what was that charge for? Man? What
- 16:29Speaker 2: did mister Dylan buy?
- 16:31Speaker 6: Oh, mister Dylan didn't buy anything. The slip was signed
- 16:34Speaker 6: by missus Dylon.
- 16:47Speaker 4: You are listening to Dragnet authentic stories of your police force.
- 16:50Speaker 5: And action.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Four fifteen pm, Thursday, February seventh. As soon as the
- 17:02Speaker 2: clerk in the credit department at the Union Department store
- 17:05Speaker 2: showed us the sales slip with the late missus Sarah
- 17:07Speaker 2: Dillon's signature on it, we had the date on the
- 17:10Speaker 2: sales slip double checked immediately. The data shown on the
- 17:13Speaker 2: slip was correct beyond any doubt, December fifth. That was
- 17:16Speaker 2: a little more than two and a half months after
- 17:18Speaker 2: Sarah Dillon had died. Who the person was who forged
- 17:21Speaker 2: her signature or why they'd forged it, we had no idea.
- 17:24Speaker 2: The amount of the charge purchases shown on the sales
- 17:26Speaker 2: slip was for four hundred and eighteen dollars, all of
- 17:29Speaker 2: it for women's clothing. We attempted to check with the
- 17:32Speaker 2: salesgirl who handle the purchase, a Laura van Kirk, but
- 17:34Speaker 2: we were told it was her day off. We called
- 17:36Speaker 2: her home, they told us that she was gone for
- 17:38Speaker 2: the day and couldn't be located. They said she'd be
- 17:41Speaker 2: at work the following morning. Four forty pm. Then and
- 17:44Speaker 2: I took the sales slip with a forged signature on it,
- 17:46Speaker 2: and drove back to the office. We went directly to
- 17:49Speaker 2: forgery Detail, briefed them on our findings, and gave them
- 17:51Speaker 2: the sales slip. Then we drove back to the home
- 17:53Speaker 2: of the Dylan's friend, Raymond Shaffer, and checked through the
- 17:56Speaker 2: two suitcases. There we came up with a small photo
- 17:59Speaker 2: of missus Dylan, along with exemplars of her handwriting, as
- 18:02Speaker 2: well as her husbands, which we found in an autograph
- 18:04Speaker 2: album in one of the suitcases. The handwriting samples were
- 18:07Speaker 2: checked against the signature on the sales slip, but neither
- 18:09Speaker 2: of them matched. The work of compiling a list of
- 18:12Speaker 2: all known female forgery suspects was begun immediately. The following morning,
- 18:16Speaker 2: Gun and I went back to the Union Department store,
- 18:19Speaker 2: where we interviewed the salesgirl, Laura van Kirk, who'd handled
- 18:22Speaker 2: the purchase.
- 18:23Speaker 9: Yes, I remember making this sale officer. I'm not too
- 18:26Speaker 9: sure about the woman who brought the things, though, I
- 18:28Speaker 9: mean what she looked like.
- 18:29Speaker 5: Well, could you try to describe her force, Miss then
- 18:31Speaker 5: Kirks as well as you can remember.
- 18:33Speaker 6: She had light round here.
- 18:34Speaker 9: I'm pretty sure that not too old, maybe in her
- 18:37Speaker 9: late thirties early forties. She was a plain looking woman
- 18:41Speaker 9: five foot five or six. Then, as I remember, she
- 18:45Speaker 9: wore glasses. I remember that too.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I see you got that picture, miss delamare Ben.
- 18:49Speaker 5: Uh yeah, yeah.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Here would you take a look at this picture? Miss?
- 18:55Speaker 2: How does that look like a woman you waited on?
- 18:58Speaker 9: No, no, that's not her. The woman I weighed on
- 19:01Speaker 9: was much younger. She had light brown hair too, not gray,
- 19:06Speaker 9: thin face I think, And she walked glasses.
- 19:08Speaker 5: I'm sure that you remember if there was a man
- 19:10Speaker 5: with him, Miss Vankirk, or was she alone?
- 19:13Speaker 9: No, she was alone, now that I remember. There was
- 19:16Speaker 9: something very different about the glasses she wore. I don't
- 19:19Speaker 9: know if that's important or not.
- 19:20Speaker 2: What about her glasses?
- 19:22Speaker 9: They were horn rimmed, as I remember, very light color,
- 19:25Speaker 9: and there was some metalwork along the top edge of
- 19:27Speaker 9: the frame, very smart looking gold metal along the top.
- 19:31Speaker 5: Light brown hair, slight bill, thin face. Late thirties and
- 19:34Speaker 5: early forties were light, horn rimmed glasses and gold metal
- 19:38Speaker 5: on the frame.
- 19:39Speaker 6: Yes, that's right.
- 19:40Speaker 5: Check me if I'm wrong, Joe. That descriptions done familiar,
- 19:44Speaker 5: Just what I was thinking. Horn rim glasses, metal work
- 19:46Speaker 5: on the woman who came to see us at the oven. Yeah,
- 19:49Speaker 5: you got a little Seal Banner.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Then and I went back to the office and had
- 19:54Speaker 2: low Seal Banner checked your r and ey. She had
- 19:56Speaker 2: no criminal record. Then we drove to the home on
- 19:59Speaker 2: Ralston Avenue which Chester Dillon had leased to Lucille Banner
- 20:02Speaker 2: and which she in turn had sub left. We obtained
- 20:04Speaker 2: a copy of the lease which the Banner woman had
- 20:06Speaker 2: with the current tenants and which bore her signature. We
- 20:09Speaker 2: brought the copy of the lease downtown, gave it to
- 20:11Speaker 2: Don Meyer and Handwriting and asked him to compare Lucille
- 20:14Speaker 2: Banner's signature with the signature on the sales slip that
- 20:17Speaker 2: we'd obtained from the Union Department store. Fifteen minutes later,
- 20:20Speaker 2: he called us at the office with a result.
- 20:23Speaker 5: Yeah, Don, that's up. You are right.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Thanks. Hell what do you get?
- 20:28Speaker 5: Says There's no question in his mind, Yeah, both signatures
- 20:31Speaker 5: match perfectly.
- 20:35Speaker 2: What the reason was behind Lucille Banners forging the signature
- 20:38Speaker 2: of missus dllon on the sales slip, We didn't know
- 20:41Speaker 2: whether or not it had any connection with the disappearance
- 20:43Speaker 2: of Chester Dillon. We didn't know. As soon as we
- 20:46Speaker 2: got the handwriting report from Don Meyer, Ben and I
- 20:48Speaker 2: left the office immediately and drove to the bungalow which
- 20:50Speaker 2: the Banner woman was renting on Ralston Avenue. It was
- 20:53Speaker 2: a block down the street from the Dylan house. Lucille
- 20:56Speaker 2: Banner wasn't at home, but a neighborhood gardener trimming the
- 20:59Speaker 2: lawn in front of her high house told us that
- 21:00Speaker 2: she was expected back shortly. The gardener, who identified himself
- 21:04Speaker 2: only as Julio, volunteered that he also did gardening work
- 21:07Speaker 2: for Miss Banner when she occupied the Dylan home. He'd
- 21:10Speaker 2: also worked for the Dylans when they lived in the house.
- 21:13Speaker 2: He told us he liked the Dylans quite a bit,
- 21:15Speaker 2: but he didn't have much use for Miss Banner. He
- 21:17Speaker 2: seemed to be up on all the news in the neighborhood.
- 21:20Speaker 2: He trimmed the hedges of the lawn with hands shears
- 21:22Speaker 2: as we talked to him.
- 21:25Speaker 5: Can you tell us anything about Miss Dylan and Miss
- 21:27Speaker 5: Banner and Julia? How did the same to get along?
- 21:29Speaker 2: You know?
- 21:29Speaker 5: Did they get along all right?
- 21:31Speaker 8: I guess when I worked at the big house down
- 21:32Speaker 8: there from Miss Banner, that's before she moved, I would
- 21:34Speaker 8: see mister Dillon there. He would be at the house
- 21:37Speaker 8: maybe once two times a week. This, Kanna would ask
- 21:39Speaker 8: him to come over cook dinner for him. Miss Banner
- 21:42Speaker 8: likes him, might think, mister Dylan, I don't know about him.
- 21:44Speaker 8: He wasn't feelings so good, still thinking about his wife. Yeah,
- 21:48Speaker 8: I finish up this clipping. Now there all done.
- 21:53Speaker 2: You mentioned you don't like miss Banner very much, Julia,
- 21:56Speaker 2: Why is that she ever give you a reason not
- 21:57Speaker 2: to like her.
- 21:58Speaker 8: She's a little crazy, i'd think, funny woman. When I
- 22:00Speaker 8: used to work at the Big House for her in
- 22:02Speaker 8: the garden, she would watch me all the time, follow
- 22:04Speaker 8: me all around, tell me to do all kind.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Of crazy jobs.
- 22:06Speaker 8: She can be good play though, So I do.
- 22:08Speaker 5: That, honey, mean Julia, what kind of crazy?
- 22:10Speaker 2: Joe?
- 22:10Speaker 5: The compost box for fertilizer?
- 22:12Speaker 8: You know, she wanted me to build one for her
- 22:13Speaker 8: in the backyard. That was down the street at the
- 22:15Speaker 8: Dylon house. Crazy woman, she wanted me to build a
- 22:18Speaker 8: compost box in the greenhouse.
- 22:19Speaker 2: I'm a special place mart for whoever heard of that?
- 22:21Speaker 8: To build a compost box inside the greenhouse? Crazy?
- 22:24Speaker 2: What did you build it for?
- 22:25Speaker 8: It is but not inside the greenhouse. I built it
- 22:27Speaker 8: outside right next door to the greenhouse. When she come
- 22:29Speaker 8: out saw she goes crazy, almost call me names crazy.
- 22:32Speaker 8: She made me tear it up. Then she made me
- 22:34Speaker 8: build the inside the greenhouse right on the place she had.
- 22:36Speaker 5: Mark for it.
- 22:37Speaker 2: And when it always happened, Julia, do you remember when
- 22:40Speaker 2: you built a compost box? I mean a couple of.
- 22:42Speaker 8: Months ago about that. It was just after mister Dylon
- 22:45Speaker 8: went away. I tried to tell him its banter. Who
- 22:46Speaker 8: ever heard of a compost box in a greenhouse? She
- 22:48Speaker 8: wouldn't listen. She had to have a building a certain
- 22:51Speaker 8: place right in the greenhouse, a little piece of ground,
- 22:53Speaker 8: and the box had to go right on top of
- 22:54Speaker 8: her her.
- 22:55Speaker 2: You figured she acted pretty strange about it.
- 22:56Speaker 8: Do you think she had something there?
- 22:58Speaker 5: Little piece of ground?
- 22:59Speaker 8: You think she I sup at the.
- 23:00Speaker 2: High one fifteen, DM Lucille Banner returned home and Ben
- 23:07Speaker 2: and I went inside the house Winner where we questioned
- 23:09Speaker 2: her in the living room. Outside in the front yard,
- 23:12Speaker 2: the gardener Julio continued working on the lawn. Lucille Banner
- 23:15Speaker 2: was calm and composed. We questioned her about the forged
- 23:18Speaker 2: signature on the sales slip. She would admit nothing.
- 23:20Speaker 6: The whole thing's too silly to even comment on. I
- 23:22Speaker 6: don't know what you're talking about. Target.
- 23:24Speaker 2: We think you do, Miss Banner.
- 23:25Speaker 5: Our handwriting man is checked the two signatures, one on
- 23:27Speaker 5: the sailor slip and went on the lease. They both met.
- 23:29Speaker 5: They were written with the same person, there's no doubt
- 23:31Speaker 5: about it, and checked her.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Know what about it, Miss Banner, There's no way out
- 23:34Speaker 2: of it. You ought to know that.
- 23:35Speaker 6: I'll deny it. That's all. I'll keep on denying it.
- 23:37Speaker 6: I wasn't in that story, and I didn't forge any signatures.
- 23:40Speaker 6: Why would I do a thing like that. What kind
- 23:41Speaker 6: of a woman do you think I am?
- 23:42Speaker 5: Oh?
- 23:43Speaker 2: We know are the facts, ma'am? Now, why don't you
- 23:44Speaker 2: give us a straight story. It's going to save time
- 23:46Speaker 2: and trouble for everybody concerned.
- 23:47Speaker 6: I've heard everything you've got to say. This thing's ridiculous,
- 23:50Speaker 6: it's stupid. I'm not answering any more questions.
- 23:52Speaker 5: You want to get your hat and code, Miss Banner,
- 23:54Speaker 5: for you not to come downtown win her?
- 23:55Speaker 6: What good's that going to do. I'll just keep on denying.
- 23:57Speaker 6: If you can't make me say out of a thing
- 23:59Speaker 6: like that, please strike here.
- 24:03Speaker 5: All right, Yes, ma'am, cars right out in front. Hold
- 24:13Speaker 5: of a minute, when your bed, you know, okay, Julie.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Yes, a minute?
- 24:16Speaker 5: Sure, well, Miss Bonner, Liam say.
- 24:21Speaker 2: I'd like to ask of you, Julia. You've got a
- 24:22Speaker 2: couple of minutes to spare.
- 24:23Speaker 8: Yeah, you want something?
- 24:24Speaker 2: We want to take a look in the backyard of
- 24:26Speaker 2: the house down the street, mister Dylon's house. Like, have
- 24:28Speaker 2: you come along with it? Julia?
- 24:29Speaker 5: Won't take very long?
- 24:30Speaker 8: Sure, okay, I'll come along.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Bring a shovel along when you're Julio like to check something?
- 24:34Speaker 8: Yeah, okay, I bring one, all right, miss Spas About
- 24:39Speaker 8: what are you trying to do?
- 24:40Speaker 7: Something?
- 24:41Speaker 2: We want to check in the Dylan's backyard. It won't
- 24:42Speaker 2: take far.
- 24:44Speaker 6: Would it have to do with me? I don't have
- 24:45Speaker 6: anything to do with that house. I don't even live
- 24:47Speaker 6: there anymore. You realize that, Yes, ma'am, I'll call my lawyer.
- 24:51Speaker 6: I'll call him as soon as I get to a phone.
- 24:56Speaker 5: Julia, back this way, started through the gate.
- 25:03Speaker 6: What are you trying to do to me? You know
- 25:04Speaker 6: I don't live here anymore. I don't even have anything
- 25:06Speaker 6: to do with this place.
- 25:07Speaker 5: You did live here, ma'm you lived here, haven't missed
- 25:09Speaker 5: the dinner disappeared? And none? Right?
- 25:10Speaker 6: But are you trying to say, you've got no business
- 25:12Speaker 6: on this property. You've got no business here at all.
- 25:14Speaker 5: Yes, ma'am. What did you kill Jessterdylan? Did you Kenny Man?
- 25:23Speaker 2: All right?
- 25:23Speaker 5: Julia?
- 25:24Speaker 2: The compost box in the greenhouse.
- 25:25Speaker 8: Do you want to start digging the compost box?
- 25:27Speaker 5: Yeah? Okay.
- 25:35Speaker 6: He was an old man, so old, he was sick.
- 25:39Speaker 6: He didn't want to live anymore. He didn't have any
- 25:41Speaker 6: reason for living. Why shouldn't give me the house? Why
- 25:44Speaker 6: shouldn't I have his money? I was nice to him,
- 25:46Speaker 6: I cooked for him, wanted to take care of him.
- 25:49Speaker 6: He just didn't want to live anymore.
- 25:50Speaker 5: That's all all right, Julia.
- 25:52Speaker 2: You can't hold it up.
- 25:53Speaker 5: You want to tell us man he needed a woman.
- 25:56Speaker 6: Anybody could tell that he needed me. He got a
- 25:58Speaker 6: long sign testing me. He offered to marry him, and
- 26:00Speaker 6: he wouldn't do it. I wanted to do was think
- 26:03Speaker 6: about his wife. She was dead. He'd sit around and
- 26:05Speaker 6: talk about her all the time.
- 26:06Speaker 5: You killed him, I want you trying to say I wanted.
- 26:08Speaker 6: To marry Chester and take care of him. Wouldn't do it.
- 26:11Speaker 6: He had an argument in the kitchen one night. I
- 26:13Speaker 6: had a gun and I killed him. I killed him.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Is that where you buried him in the greenhouse?
- 26:18Speaker 6: Yes, I buried him deep the gun too. He'll be
- 26:21Speaker 6: all right, poor Chester.
- 26:23Speaker 5: Yeah, he was so old he.
- 26:25Speaker 6: Needed a woman and he'll tell you that and needed me.
- 26:29Speaker 5: I guess you made a mistake, No, sir, he did.
- 26:32Speaker 6: Yeah, he didn't want me.
- 26:42Speaker 3: The star you have just heard was true. The names
- 26:45Speaker 3: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:47Speaker 4: On June, second trial was held in Superior Court Department
- 26:50Speaker 4: eighty six, City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.
- 26:53Speaker 4: In a moment the results of that trial, Lucille Marie
- 27:05Speaker 4: Banner was tried and convicted of murder in the first degree.
- 27:08Speaker 4: She received the sentence as prescribed by law. She is
- 27:11Speaker 4: now serving a life term in the State Penitentiary for
- 27:13Speaker 4: Women to hatch Apee, California. You have just heard Dragnet
- 27:26Speaker 4: a series of authentic cases from official files. Technical advice
- 27:29Speaker 4: comes from the Office of Chief of Police W. H. Parker,
- 27:32Speaker 4: Los Angeles Police Department.
- 27:41Speaker 2: They tuned for Counterspy next on NBC.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well an interesting case.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Now.
- 27:55Speaker 1: I don't know whether it was somehow the way that
- 28:01Speaker 1: this episode concluded. From having heard this episode as well
- 28:05Speaker 1: seen it before, although it's been a few years since
- 28:09Speaker 1: I've encountered this at all, But the whole arrangement about
- 28:15Speaker 1: having her fold his checks and give them when they
- 28:19Speaker 1: got back was a bit suspicious because as a landlord,
- 28:25Speaker 1: you're taking a big risk that something might come up
- 28:28Speaker 1: and the money might get spent, And even as a renter,
- 28:32Speaker 1: I don't like the idea of that, because it just
- 28:36Speaker 1: messes up your book keeping to have this extra money
- 28:39Speaker 1: in the bank that you're gonna have to pay out,
- 28:42Speaker 1: although her subleasing the house might solve that problem, but
- 28:47Speaker 1: still it seems to me that it would make a
- 28:50Speaker 1: lot more sense for her to deposit checks into his
- 28:54Speaker 1: bank account than to hold checks for an indeterminate amount
- 28:58Speaker 1: of time. Though I guess if she was going for
- 29:02Speaker 1: the suicide narrative, it might make sense of him just
- 29:06Speaker 1: not thinking clearly. But still, once the evidence came forward
- 29:10Speaker 1: that really disproved that, I think they should have started
- 29:15Speaker 1: thinking of her. And probably one of the only times
- 29:19Speaker 1: that I kind of question the sort of rote procedure
- 29:24Speaker 1: that they end up following of beginning the work of
- 29:27Speaker 1: compiling a list of all known female forgery suspects. I mean,
- 29:33Speaker 1: I guess it might take quite a while to get
- 29:37Speaker 1: the list together, and it might be a case of
- 29:40Speaker 1: better to have it and not need it than need
- 29:44Speaker 1: it and not have it. But still it seems less
