- 0:37So how are you doing today, my lovely, sweet friend?
- 0:40I'm doing pretty well, can't complain.
- 0:43The time difference is big, but that's OK.
- 0:47We're we're killing it. We're killing it.
- 0:50Well, right now it is 11/22 for me.
- 0:53What time is it for you right now?
- 0:56Also 1122 but PM. You're getting ready to go into
- 1:00tomorrow for me. Yes, it's nice, though we're on
- 1:06the same day quite often. We're not.
- 1:09Yeah. Well, soon you'll be in the in
- 1:12the same. You'll be closer to me, but
- 1:15behind. Well, but yes, I'm right.
- 1:18I'm going to be behind you instead of.
- 1:20This is so crazy, though. That's so I find it.
- 1:24I'm excited for you to to get over here and start your
- 1:28adventure that you're going to be doing.
- 1:29Yes, I'm so excited to be in the same country as everyone else.
- 1:33It's going to be fantastic. I'm excited for and when do you
- 1:36think, when do you think you'll be actually here?
- 1:40How long do you think it'll be now?
- 1:41Hopefully in the next week or two.
- 1:45Well, that's exciting. By this the time this comes out
- 1:49I should be there. I'm excited.
- 1:52I'm well, again, I told you, like we said earlier, I am going
- 1:56to live vicariously through you through your adventures.
- 1:59So are you going to on your bookstagram, are you going to
- 2:03post a little bit about your adventures on there as well?
- 2:06Or are you going to? Or is your bookstagram just
- 2:08going to stay your bookstagram? I think I'm going to post
- 2:13aesthetically pleasing things that you may find on my trip and
- 2:16where I might be reading from. Yeah.
- 2:20Oh, that would be neat. I think, yeah, picturesque wise,
- 2:24it will be lovely. But yeah, we have another
- 2:27account where we have all of our travels at.
- 2:31What's going on there? Do you have a link tree on your
- 2:35bookstagram so that you can link your other?
- 2:37One. But maybe I should.
- 2:39Maybe I'll get on to that. Because if you do that, then
- 2:42people could, if they wanted to, they could follow your adventure
- 2:46as well. I know, I know.
- 2:48I'm excited to follow you. Thank you.
- 2:51Yeah, it's going to be a great time.
- 2:53So now what are you currently reading, ma'am?
- 2:57I just started, Everyone's going to have to forgive me.
- 3:01I am a Kindle reader because I can't carry on my books with me
- 3:06and I am reading Fear of the Lightest Terrible Fear of
- 3:09Forever by Kennedy Bryant. It is currently an arc that by
- 3:14the time this comes out, it will be out not in Rebecca's genre.
- 3:19This is a contemporary romance. This one is.
- 3:25It's hockey, ice hockey. Oh, OK.
- 3:27So yeah, but it's good fun. Kennedy writes.
- 3:30This is the fourth book in the series, so it's the last one.
- 3:34And she writes, I really like the way she writes in terms of
- 3:36like mental health Rep and stuff like that.
- 3:39So. Now you said it's the fourth
- 3:40book now is it, are you following the same person all
- 3:44the way through or is it like interconnected standalone kind
- 3:47of vibe? Interconnected standalone.
- 3:50So the male made characters are They all play on the same hockey
- 3:55team. So it's got yeah, it's got that
- 3:59sense of found family in it, which is really nice.
- 4:02But it's also very much you could just read the one by
- 4:06itself. You don't need to read.
- 4:08OK, now are they spicy? Yes, of course they are.
- 4:13Of course they are. Yeah.
- 4:15I would have to ask those questions, you know.
- 4:19Yeah, I will be very upfront with you if they are not.
- 4:25Now myself, now please. Tell me.
- 4:29Again, you know, you know, I'm in my my my villain era, but I
- 4:34am reading Kingdom of Silent Sorrows.
- 4:36That's what I'm reading right now by AJ Harris.
- 4:40She is on the podcast a couple weeks ago, but this is her book.
- 4:45I know my light gets it reflects, but she did all the
- 4:49artwork. Let me see.
- 4:51I mean, she does. Oh, her stuff is just so
- 4:53beautiful. Like, let's see here.
- 4:56Like you can see, I know she has one that's a girl that's in here
- 4:59and it's so beautiful. But look at that.
- 5:02Yeah, she does. Wow, yeah, that's insane in the
- 5:07best. Way.
- 5:08Oh yeah, oh, I mean, if you go over and you follow her on on
- 5:13Instagram, AG Harris, you can actually see her actually
- 5:17creating her art and stuff for her, all of her characters and
- 5:22stuff. And I just, I love it because
- 5:25you're seeing what she sees what, what the characters that
- 5:28she created in her mind and that you're actually seeing the
- 5:32actual visual. And I, I love that aspect of
- 5:35that, but it is good. And, and when you see her and
- 5:38she's like so soft spoken and she's so, and she's like the
- 5:41sweetest lady. And I'm like, where did the
- 5:43spiciness that you were writing? Where did it come from?
- 5:46Because you don't you see her. You don't expect it, you know,
- 5:49because she looks very but her spicy, she, she knows what she's
- 5:55doing. Did yeah, good for her.
- 5:57And I really appreciate that she can write and draw.
- 6:01Oh yeah, Like so much talent. That amazes me.
- 6:05Another author that was on the podcast this past year,
- 6:08Ravennavale, she does the same thing.
- 6:10She writes and does her art and Parker A Garner, she also does
- 6:16art, writes and does art as well, too.
- 6:19And I'm like, like, where do you all come from?
- 6:22I can't do either of those things.
- 6:24Yeah, please stop taking all of the talent.
- 6:27Share the love. But now, now the other thing
- 6:31that you are amazing I have to tell you because today our guest
- 6:35is Carissa Broadbent and you power read several the beginning
- 6:43of her books and that it I have to tell you, I am impressed with
- 6:47you how you got through book one and two in how many hours It was
- 6:53not very long. No, it wasn't.
- 6:55I did listen very like iPad up on high audio.
- 6:59I think it would have been like 1.75.
- 7:03So I powered through them. But we, we only landed.
- 7:07So I'm in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia at the moment and we
- 7:11only landed here today. So we had an overnight flight
- 7:14and I was awake for a lot of that.
- 7:15So I've, I haven't really, we haven't really been doing a lot
- 7:19of sleeping. So I've just been reading, which
- 7:21has been fantastic. And also that first geology
- 7:25especially was so captivating. I didn't want, I didn't want to
- 7:28stop listening anyway, it was fantastic.
- 7:31So what is your thoughts on Mr. Vincent now, mind you, Now mind
- 7:37you, he he isn't the main, he's not the main male character of
- 7:40the book. But I do find Vincent quite
- 7:45alluring, I have to tell you. Yes, I can certainly understand
- 7:49why you did when you initially we were speaking about it before
- 7:53I'd read it and I was like, what is she talking about?
- 7:55Like what do you mean this guy's barely here, Like what is going
- 7:59on? But the more I got into it, I
- 8:01was like, OK, I get it, I get it.
- 8:03And then you see more of him in the second part that I was
- 8:08expecting and it was great. Like seeing his point of view
- 8:12was very cool and it brought a lot of Vincent or Victor to
- 8:21light for me. I mean, Heather and I, I mean,
- 8:25we have called him Victor so many times, even though he is
- 8:29Vincent. But but it's hilarious because
- 8:34but you know, The thing is, her and I will have a full on
- 8:36conversation and neither of us will pick up on it that we're
- 8:41calling him the wrong name. I think we're more aware of it
- 8:44now because we've picked up on it so much that we do this.
- 8:48But Oh yeah, we both, we both like Vincent.
- 8:54And if you remember correctly, he has long white hair, doesn't
- 8:57he? Or silver hair white.
- 8:59Is it white or silver? I think it's white.
- 9:03White and just, you know what's come of that.
- 9:06Normally I'm like a, the dark haired MMC is the one that gets
- 9:10me. But there's something about him.
- 9:13I don't know if it's just the power that he, you know, he
- 9:18demands or just his regalness about him.
- 9:23It's because he's a vampire. I don't know what it is, but
- 9:26there's something about I I love him more even though I love
- 9:30Rain. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely
- 9:32love him, but there's something about Vincent.
- 9:35But I'm deep in my villain era, so maybe that's.
- 9:38Why definitely. I definitely think I'm more of a
- 9:41rain girly, but I also think when you eventually start your
- 9:44Throne of Glass journey, there may be someone that you find
- 9:49alluring in the same aspect that you find.
- 9:53Oh, that's interesting. With Vincent, I wonder if anyone
- 9:57else will understand what I'm talking about.
- 10:00Maybe they will, but I don't want to spoil anything for.
- 10:03You now you do have to get to this though.
- 10:05At some point you have to read the novella Now 6.
- 10:09Questions. Yeah.
- 10:10It now everybody look, if you're watching us on on YouTube or on
- 10:14Spotify or what on it's it's not very big.
- 10:17It's probably what is it? Let me see.
- 10:21It's not that long of a a little novella.
- 10:23It is 164 pages, but it is, it's, I think you can only get
- 10:30it in hardback and I love it because it has the little, you
- 10:34know, has the little ribbon. I don't remember.
- 10:37If I love that. Oh, and look at oh look at the
- 10:40the cover on in the inside. Look at Wow and it's stunning
- 10:44and it's just stunning. Oh, absolutely.
- 10:50It just the artwork on them, everything, it's just it's
- 10:53beautiful. But if when you get to this now
- 10:56you got to meet the couple that is in here.
- 11:00In book in the first one, yes. I'm sorry.
- 11:03Book two, Yeah. Festuology Portrait.
- 11:04And ashes in the star curse gate, you'll meet it's Vale and
- 11:07Lilith, but this is their love story and you get to see how
- 11:13that happened and who Lilith was and who Vale was is whatnot.
- 11:22And it's so I just love it. It is so beautiful.
- 11:25So I please don't ever skip it. You know, anybody that's reading
- 11:28the crown Crowns of Niaxia series, do not miss this one
- 11:33because it is so good. It is.
- 11:36I don't know, I just I, I love that.
- 11:38That is probably my favorite little novella I've ever read
- 11:41out of all the books I've ever done.
- 11:43And when we talked to her, because everyone just a little
- 11:47tidbit, we're filming this part after we've already talked to
- 11:50Carissa. We've already so.
- 11:55But I was telling her how much we how much I love this one.
- 11:58And she said she was she wrote that in 2 1/2 weeks.
- 12:02Yeah, that's wild to me. Yeah, I know it's short, but
- 12:08like they pack a punch. Oh, and then when you read it
- 12:12and it's just again, like I said, it's a beautiful love
- 12:16story. That's the other thing about how
- 12:18she writes. That's why I told her she's one
- 12:20of my auto buy authors. I love how she writes in the
- 12:25scenes that she writes with them, with her characters, the
- 12:29love stories that she's making, she's creating and it's they're
- 12:34beautiful and it's not, you know, and you know, you'll have
- 12:39that enemies to lovers thing and and she writes it perfectly to
- 12:44it. It's not like you'll see it and
- 12:46then they're immediately, you know, together, you know, you
- 12:50know, some books you'll read that this she does the slow
- 12:54burn. I mean, it's perfect.
- 12:56Yeah, does it very well, very well.
- 13:00And I love. I often struggle with romanticy,
- 13:04especially with the first book and the world building and it's
- 13:08just so much information all at once.
- 13:11And it's just kind of info dumped on you, right?
- 13:13But oh, absolutely. I don't know how she does it,
- 13:16but she just writes it. So Florida State and it just
- 13:20kind of all the information that you need just slots in when you
- 13:22need it and you kind of just learn about the world as you go
- 13:25along, which I love because I can actually take the
- 13:29information in and remember it, right?
- 13:31But if you're telling me 27 different names of things in the
- 13:341st 10 pages, I'm not going to remember them by the end of the
- 13:38book. Do you know what I mean?
- 13:39We'll see like a lot of people have issue with the Plated
- 13:44Prisoner series with the first book Guild.
- 13:49That and because like a lot of people get it and they'll
- 13:51they'll start reading it and then they might quit after book
- 13:55one or not even make it through book 1 because they're like, I
- 13:59don't get it. I don't understand where this is
- 14:01going, that kind of thing. But you have for that particular
- 14:05book on book 1, you have to read that.
- 14:06It is a tremendous amount of world building.
- 14:09But you know, and you don't mean my my book husband until book 2,
- 14:14but you know, it's one of those ones.
- 14:17You have to have that world building in that particular
- 14:21series. You have to have that to get to
- 14:23where the journey goes. I've heard people say that also
- 14:27about Akatar with the, you know, 1/4 thorns and roses with the
- 14:30first book. Like some people they'll, they
- 14:34had a hard time reading that first book.
- 14:38You know, I've heard some people even had quit halfway through it
- 14:41and didn't, you know, didn't finish.
- 14:43And I'm like, it's so beautiful once you get, I mean, I loved it
- 14:47though myself personally, but you know, but that's just me
- 14:53though. I don't, I don't know.
- 14:55Did did you have now? Did you struggle with Akatar?
- 14:58With no but I I think I didn't struggle with Akatar because I
- 15:03read Throne of Glass first. OK, OK, so you're already used
- 15:07to her writing. Style.
- 15:08Yes, and I wouldn't say she info dumps, but the first throne of
- 15:14glass is very much is very different in the sense that you
- 15:20do learn so much and you have to really be in that world straight
- 15:25away. Where I didn't find that as much
- 15:27with ACOTAR because it was kind of like you were between 2
- 15:31worlds right? The humans and the non humans.
- 15:35Like do you know what I mean? Yeah, I know what you're saying.
- 15:39I know what you're saying. Yeah, I.
- 15:41Did struggle with Crescent City though, just to throw that one
- 15:45in there as well. What what for you, what was was
- 15:49it because with Crescent City, is it because it was more like
- 15:52urban type setting since it was so very different than the other
- 15:56two series or or was it the story itself that was difficult?
- 16:00What, what, what was it with Crescent City that did that for
- 16:04you? I.
- 16:05Don't know, I was just overwhelmed in general.
- 16:07Do you know what I mean? Like I found quite quickly I got
- 16:13quite attached. And then obviously, you know,
- 16:16things change. And then, yeah.
- 16:20And then you learn and you meet so many people really quickly.
- 16:25And then I think, I think, yeah, to be honest, maybe my brain did
- 16:29struggle a little bit with the. You've got all of these romantic
- 16:34elements be in this urban world. It took my brain a little while
- 16:37to get around that. Maybe.
- 16:39I'm not sure. But I mean, I was in it.
- 16:41I was in it. I mean, it is a lot of
- 16:43characters and when you read Crescent City, because it is
- 16:47very different than Sarah's, you know, other two series.
- 16:51And I mind you, I haven't read sort of glass, but I I do know
- 16:53from other people saying that it is different.
- 16:56It's very different than than Acatar because it is like more
- 17:01modern, like our more modern world.
- 17:04It's but there's a lot of different types of characters.
- 17:07You have more shifters, you have, you have Faye, you have
- 17:11vampire, you have mermaid. I mean there's human that I mean
- 17:17there's a lot of moving pieces. And then you have the Esteri
- 17:20people, which is something altogether different.
- 17:24And then you're reading the beginning of the book and you're
- 17:28like, oh, you know, you're just happy and you're going along.
- 17:31And then you get, I think it's like maybe 5 chapters and
- 17:35something like that. And then there's something,
- 17:37something catastrophic event happens and it alters the, the
- 17:43timeline, it alters the rest of the books and, and the female
- 17:48main character is Bryce. And the this event that happens,
- 17:53it rocks her entire foundation of what she thought she'd do.
- 17:57And the entire rest of the series, she's trying to figure
- 18:03out how this what this event, how did this happen?
- 18:07Why did this happen? And she thought she knew, but
- 18:11she didn't know. Yeah, I guess.
- 18:13You know, yeah, 100% and you. But I really like in Crescent
- 18:18City that you learn everything with her, right?
- 18:21Like the the narrator isn't keeping anything from you.
- 18:26You're learning it with them. And then you kind of feel how
- 18:30she would feel, which I really like.
- 18:32And you go through those emotions, which I think for me,
- 18:35when I got to the third book, it made me so much more emotional
- 18:39because you're still so invested in what happened in chapter 5 of
- 18:42the first book that you're then, you know, these books are 800
- 18:46pages each. And you're nearly at the end of
- 18:48the third book and you're still thinking about Chapter 5 like
- 18:51crazy. And it's, and it's so
- 18:55interesting. And then of course, the thing
- 18:57that I didn't realize, I mean, I, I'd heard people say this,
- 19:01but I didn't realize. If you have read ACOTAR, it is
- 19:04very important for you to read Crescent City because when you
- 19:08get to book 3, there's questions you have from ACOTAR.
- 19:12They answer things in Book 3 from there and there's crossover
- 19:17kind of thing. So before a Qatar 6 comes out,
- 19:21everybody please read Crescent City.
- 19:23It's very important because I do feel that will play a role in
- 19:28whatever's upcoming. But but it's so, so good.
- 19:34I loved it. I absolutely love Crescent City.
- 19:36I didn't, I didn't have any expectations 100%, you know,
- 19:40going into it as much. I just was like, oh, because it
- 19:44sat on my shelf for probably 6 months, something like that.
- 19:48Because I think I got them for my birthday last year.
- 19:51So and then I didn't start reading it until like around
- 19:54Christmas time. I think it's when I started
- 19:56Crescent City. And then I finished it in like
- 19:59the beginning of February or something like that.
- 20:01The trilogy. But it is so good.
- 20:04It is. It is so good.
- 20:07Again, I'm so excited for book 6 to come out in October.
- 20:10I just. Me too.
- 20:12I just wonder in my mind one, who's going to be the point of
- 20:17view? Is this going to be a
- 20:20continuation of Nesta or do we think Nesta's, do we think her
- 20:27storytelling is done because she was a prominent, you know, she
- 20:33was that very prominent person at the end.
- 20:35I mean, is it going to be Elaine?
- 20:37Is it going to be more? Could it be Ameren?
- 20:41You know, I don't, I don't know. Do you think it would be one of
- 20:45the guy's point of view? I mean, surely we have to get
- 20:49Azrael's point of view at some stage, right?
- 20:52Yeah. He's my favorite.
- 20:55You know, you know he has the the largest wingspan.
- 21:00He does, he does, and he's definitely gives to me.
- 21:05He gives the biggest shadow daddy energy out of the three of
- 21:09them. Well, you know, I have so many
- 21:12questions in regards to him. You know, who is his father?
- 21:20Where does his shadows come from?
- 21:23Because now this, this is again, I do not feel he will end up
- 21:26with Elaine. I do because when his shadow
- 21:31sees her, they want to hideaway. But when he's with Gwen, they
- 21:37sing. So that tells me I I think she
- 21:42is his, his mate. I think when we're going to find
- 21:45out that she is his one. But I think something with
- 21:49Elaine. There's something about Elaine
- 21:53that doesn't ever sit right with me.
- 21:57Yeah. So I don't know.
- 21:58I think she's at. We know she's a seer.
- 22:00We know that. But where will that come into
- 22:06play in Book 6? So I mean, do we think it's
- 22:09going to be her point of view? Don't know I mean I it could go
- 22:16either way right? Like, I don't want it to be her
- 22:19POV if it's going to be boring. But I mean, it never would be
- 22:22because it's serodo mess, obviously.
- 22:24But like, if it's Elaine's POV and then we find out that
- 22:28actually, you know, she's a bit evil, and then maybe her and
- 22:31Tamlin team up or something. Like I could get around that.
- 22:35I could get around Tamlin and Elaine.
- 22:38I really could. Now this is now this is my
- 22:41thought that I have a lot of Tamlin theories because the
- 22:45Internet has done this to me because I have, because we have
- 22:48I have my a guitar series, our little mini series that we do.
- 22:52And I look up theories that people say people's theories
- 22:55have me thinking now one, would it be weird though, if Tamlin
- 23:00would be with Elaine after he's been with her sister Pharaoh?
- 23:03Would that be weird? I don't think so, Not
- 23:08necessarily, because if we were looking at Elaine getting with
- 23:11Azrael and Sarah J Mass wrote that scene of Nestor, Cassian
- 23:15and Azrael, then surely that would have been fun.
- 23:18Yeah. I'm still very bummed that we
- 23:20never got that. One can hold out hope, right?
- 23:26You never know what might happen.
- 23:28Oh well, you never know. But see now this is the other
- 23:31weird theory. Because now when Tamlin and
- 23:34Farah when she was first at his place, because remember he make
- 23:39he mentions to her, did your you know, why didn't your mother
- 23:43tell you about us? He was very specific about her
- 23:46mother, not her father, not other people, her mother.
- 23:51So I wonder, is it possible because again, I do not think
- 23:54Mama Archeron was all human. I do not think so.
- 24:02And there's a reason why they lived that close to the wall and
- 24:06they could have lived anywhere. Why did they live there?
- 24:11So I wonder sometimes, like if she, if she was from their
- 24:17world, you know, from the fae world, was she possibly again a
- 24:20witch, wink, wink. Or which even though I haven't
- 24:24read that, I haven't read Thrown a Glass, but I think there's
- 24:27something to do with that. And what, what now?
- 24:32What if it's a possibility that Tamlin and Phaedra's mother had
- 24:37once had a relationship? And what if, no, wait, get ready
- 24:40for this. What if Nesta is Tamlin's
- 24:45daughter because her and Papa Archeron never got along?
- 24:51Think about it. They didn't get along.
- 24:53She had her mother's eyes. We know that Elaine has Papa
- 24:57Archeron's eyes because because Sarah makes this very specific.
- 25:03And then we know Farah has her mother's eyes.
- 25:05So what if this is the theory that's out there?
- 25:08What if Nesta, she had had Nesta with Tamlin?
- 25:13We're going to just put it, we'll just put Tamlin and and
- 25:17then Papa Archeron married her and then they just never said
- 25:20anything and just he raised her as his own and then they went on
- 25:23to have their own two children. I don't know how I feel about
- 25:28that because you'll match in. But yet there's a lot of stuff
- 25:34we just don't know. Mama Archeron's never, her
- 25:36name's never said, but we know that she was raising Nesta to
- 25:41marry a Prince or nobility or whatever.
- 25:44And then in Silver Flames she makes mention of her grandmother
- 25:48and she was very stern and all this.
- 25:51And remember she would make her take dance lessons and all these
- 25:55kind of things. I'm like, what happened to that
- 25:57Lady? Where did she go?
- 25:59Again, we haven't seen where any of these people.
- 26:02They never mentioned that they go see their graves or anything
- 26:06so I'm still not sold that Mama Archeron is dead.
- 26:09So again, if they don't die on Paige.
- 26:12Yeah, you've. Are they really dead?
- 26:15Are they somewhere else? I'm telling you, I have so many
- 26:20theories I. We could be here all day.
- 26:23Oh my God. So I mean, but I mean, again,
- 26:25that's coming out, you know, in October.
- 26:27So so yes, I'm excited about it. So I have a lot more theories
- 26:32out there because people have been, people have even more
- 26:36crazy theories I thought I had. Tapped into.
- 26:41Well, I thought I had tapped into the most crazy, but now it
- 26:44seems there's even more. So hopefully over between now
- 26:47and when the book comes out. Was it the 27th?
- 26:53Is that right of October? I think is when Acutar sounds
- 26:56about right. It's something like that in
- 26:58October. Yeah, I hope to be able to do
- 27:03some ACOTAR miniseries so, so we all can discuss these.
- 27:10There he is. And see if Tamlin.
- 27:11Most definitely. No, I mean, she said she doesn't
- 27:15know if Tamlin will have a redemption arc, but what I think
- 27:20that Sarah would tell us that and then give him some form of
- 27:24redemption. I think absolutely, I think she
- 27:26could do it. I mean, I understand what she
- 27:28was saying when she was talking on the podcast this March saying
- 27:34that, you know, she has to be very careful of what she does
- 27:37with Tamlin because she has had friends that have been in those
- 27:41kind of situations and relationships.
- 27:44But, you know, I have to, I have to credit Chelsea to this
- 27:48because she would always say that she could redeem him.
- 27:52I mean, he he really, he has been through it himself.
- 27:56He's had a tremendous amount of trauma.
- 27:58So I mean, is he redeemable? Do you think he is?
- 28:05Do you think he could be brought back from where he's at?
- 28:09Remember, he's mostly in beast form right now and kind of
- 28:12living like a crazy person now and.
- 28:15Yeah, maybe if he did some soul searching, maybe if they had
- 28:21like fae therapy that he could go to he.
- 28:24Eats it for. Sure, he really does.
- 28:27Maybe. Maybe he just needs to find.
- 28:31I know we love Lucian, but maybe he just needs to find a new
- 28:36friend that can help him on the right path and maybe he will on
- 28:42his adventures. Maybe then he finds someone who
- 28:45helps him on his path, and then if that's who he falls in love
- 28:48with it. Could be he needs a strong woman
- 28:53is who he needs to tell him to knock.
- 28:56It off. We have seen this.
- 28:58We have seen it from Sarah J Maas before, where we've seen
- 29:01people that we don't like, who we've liked and then we don't
- 29:05like and then they get their redemption mark.
- 29:07We have seen it before. Well, yeah, I mean you.
- 29:10So will we see it again? Will you take Nesta, for
- 29:13example? You know, people either love her
- 29:17or they hate her. A lot of people did not like
- 29:20her. But I mean, I understand why
- 29:22people don't like her. You know, they're struggling and
- 29:25all that. But you have to always remember
- 29:28everything that we have learned and everything we knew from the
- 29:31first three books. That is all Pharah's
- 29:34perspective. Point of view, yeah.
- 29:36So. So of course she's going to see
- 29:39Nesta in that light, because in her mind Nesta wasn't helping.
- 29:44But then we found out, like in Silver Flames, that she was
- 29:48doing things to try to help the family that Pharah didn't know.
- 29:54Didn't know, yeah. She didn't know what happening.
- 29:57I think a lot of people would be in the same boat as me.
- 29:59The first three books I was like, I don't really like Nesta,
- 30:03but then in Silver Flames she was so relatable to me.
- 30:09Like with her struggles and stuff like that.
- 30:12Obviously probably not to the same extent, but like I think a
- 30:16lot of people can relate to her. And I think you see a big divide
- 30:20now where people have changed their point of view because they
- 30:23go, Oh, well, actually you shouldn't judge someone based on
- 30:27what someone else has told you, right?
- 30:29Do I think that Nest is the most pleasant person?
- 30:33Absolutely not. She's married.
- 30:35She's very bristly. You know, it's but that's who
- 30:39she is and that's how she was raised.
- 30:42You know, she was raised by Mama Archron and Grandma whatever,
- 30:47because we don't have a name. We just have Grandma, you know,
- 30:51I mean, she was raised in that particular way.
- 30:54But you know, I mean, she had a lot of bad shit happened to her,
- 30:58you know, I mean, the family fell to the hard times and what
- 31:02she was doing to try to help the family.
- 31:04And then, you know, you know, Farrah, you know, leaves.
- 31:09She did. Elaine didn't try to go and find
- 31:12her. Nesta went to find her and she
- 31:14was going to go over the wall to find her.
- 31:17You know, I mean, she loves Farrah.
- 31:21I mean, I don't think if she wouldn't have cared about her,
- 31:24she would have never got that mercenary to help her and try to
- 31:28save Payra. But you know, people forget
- 31:32that. And then she got stolen out of
- 31:34her bed in the middle of the night, her and her sister, and
- 31:37then they got thrown in the Cauldron.
- 31:39She didn't know what was going to happen to her when that when
- 31:42that happened. But I do like.
- 31:44One of my favorite things though, is when she went in and
- 31:46she pointed at him. Yeah.
- 31:50I was like, ha ha, but I don't, I don't know.
- 31:53And then you get into Silver Flames and you see a lot more.
- 31:57I understand why she's like losing her mind and why she's
- 32:00drinking and why she's sleeping with every guy she can.
- 32:02She just, she had a lot of trauma to deal with, you know, I
- 32:07mean, and I guess like you're looking at, you know, like how
- 32:11recent and favorite were like, well, this is it.
- 32:14You're going to live at the House of Wind and you're going
- 32:16to have to do whatever. I don't think they understood
- 32:19her trauma very well. No, no, not at all.
- 32:22And they were so wrapped up in themselves.
- 32:26Don't get me wrong, I love Race and Farrah, but they were so and
- 32:31that's, it's understandable. Like they were wrapped up in who
- 32:35they were and what was happening in their lives that obviously it
- 32:39would have been even harder to see her perspective.
- 32:42Well, and then they were dealing with their own traumas itself,
- 32:45you know, I mean, Farrah went through a lot under the
- 32:47mountain. I mean, that was a lot, you
- 32:50know, and, and all those things. And then, you know, we always
- 32:53say like, well, Reese, you know, he did.
- 32:55I mean, he had a rough 50 years under the mountain with
- 32:58Amarantha. He was doing what he had to do
- 33:02to survive because she did kill off multiple high Lords Because
- 33:09what is it? What's the one Tarquin?
- 33:13The one that begins with AK? The one that's up in the Winter
- 33:16Court? Celius aside, his name?
- 33:18That could be wrong, I don't know.
- 33:20Begins with AK and then Thiessen.
- 33:23Those one they became High Lords under the mountain because their
- 33:27fathers were killed. Because they got.
- 33:31So he did what he had to do to survive.
- 33:35And also, of course, he was protecting his city that was
- 33:38hidden, that nobody knew existed, and they were all
- 33:41having the best time up there. Well, a lot of other people are
- 33:45under the mountain, so I don't know.
- 33:46I, I'm excited. I, I want to know.
- 33:49When do you think she's going to release the title?
- 33:51We're not that many months out. No, we're not really, are we?
- 33:57Surely, surely soon. I wonder how long you leave it.
- 34:01But even before then, we've got the novella, the 4th Wing
- 34:05novella coming out, and that doesn't have a title either.
- 34:08That comes out in September, is that right?
- 34:11Yeah. Yeah, I haven't read middle of
- 34:13September. You've read all.
- 34:16Yeah, I take it you've read All for me.
- 34:18So. Well I'm assuming the this
- 34:22novella is going to. It's not a prequel or anything
- 34:25novella so I'm assuming it's going to be a transition maybe?
- 34:30I'm assuming it's a different POV of the city.
- 34:34We may be getting the because it's all, I don't know.
- 34:41It's so hard whether or not she's going to give us because
- 34:45there's a, there's a section at the end of the third book that
- 34:48kind of goes missing and whether or not she's going to give us
- 34:53that from someone else's POV because Violet, the female main
- 34:58character, loses her memories. So whether or not we see that
- 35:03from someone else's point of view, and that's what the
- 35:04novella is, or it could, it could be anything.
- 35:09Well, yeah, it could be anything.
- 35:11That's interesting. See, I, I haven't read it
- 35:13because everybody tells me all the books and in a cliffhanger
- 35:17and then there's always big gaps and chunks between the books.
- 35:21So I'm waiting until they're all out and then I'm going to read
- 35:26them. Like with Lost memory kind of
- 35:29thing. If you watch or not watch, if
- 35:31you read Bewitched by Laura Falasa, that is, it's a memory
- 35:36thing happening in that book because you follow I for some
- 35:41reason I'm thinking her name's Celine.
- 35:43I could be wrong. The main female man character.
- 35:45It's been a little bit since I've read it, but she's a witch
- 35:49and it and she's joins this account.
- 35:52It's like a a witch's school kind of thing.
- 35:55That's just subplot in the thing.
- 35:57That's not the main thing. And but every time she uses her
- 36:01magic or she does stuff, she loses more of her memories.
- 36:05And so she has like, so she has like notebooks and notebooks and
- 36:09she writes everything down and all kinds of stuff.
- 36:13And that also plays a part in things.
- 36:15But there's a reason why she's losing her memories.
- 36:18And you will find out. You will find out.
- 36:22But it is so good. And then you will meet my second
- 36:25book husband. If you have not read these, his
- 36:28name is Memnum and he's 2000 years old and he's so and he and
- 36:37the way he talks to her and how, oh, he's so dirty it you know
- 36:41how Kingfisher and and Quicksilver is just so dirty.
- 36:45He's he's he's he's very dirty like that.
- 36:48Also, my book has been in the the plated prisoner.
- 36:52He's he's very, he's very dirty as well.
- 36:56All narrated by the same person as well, if you were wondering
- 37:00on audio. Oh God, oh I love I love
- 37:04Kingfisher. Now I I'm not an audio book girl
- 37:09but I have heard the clips and stuff and when he talks about
- 37:13with Kingfisher with them with one person being on their knees
- 37:17and that is one of the best clips.
- 37:21The same narrator does in the graphic, you know how they're
- 37:25doing graphic audio now of some books.
- 37:27Yeah. So in Acatar he does recent in
- 37:31the graphic versions of those as well.
- 37:33So all of those main mail that that vibe.
- 37:38Does he do He does the play to prisoner too?
- 37:41Does he do the? He does, yeah.
- 37:46And he just did. Have you read Metal Slinger?
- 37:49I have it sitting on my shelf. I have not read it like Light
- 37:53wielder comes out or just came out here like a week or so ago.
- 37:57Yes I just read it. Well I listened to it on
- 37:59audiobook and he did the guy in that too.
- 38:04Good for you though to have not have read Metal Slinger because
- 38:08then you don't have to wait ages because of that's probably the
- 38:11worst cliffhanger I've ever read in my entire life.
- 38:14Heather said the same thing. Heather, Heather read the whole
- 38:18thing and she was like, oh, this is so good.
- 38:20And there's like on the in the back of it, there's like a like
- 38:23a couple extra chapters or something at the back.
- 38:26And she was like, oh, maybe it'll, you know, give me an idea
- 38:28what's coming on the next one. And she's like, it's like, she's
- 38:31like, she was so bad. She was like, it's 10 years or
- 38:33five years in the future and didn't give me any answers to
- 38:36what was happening. And she's she was very upset
- 38:39about that. But now is that it that was a
- 38:42duology or is this so lights or light wielder, that was the end,
- 38:48right? Yeah, well.
- 38:52Maybe OK. It's a duology.
- 38:54I think it's going to be kind of like Carissa, like a duology.
- 38:58And then I would imagine maybe it would go again, like
- 39:01different people, but same. OK, same word.
- 39:04Well, I reckon it would be quite similar.
- 39:06Actually to be. Honest.
- 39:08Yeah, interesting. But no, I do have it.
- 39:11I do have it sitting on my, my shelf waiting for me.
- 39:15I, I have AI think I have 100 books.
- 39:18I'm a collector. I am a curator of books.
- 39:21I just don't read as fast as some people do.
- 39:24But I, as I thought, well, as I, as I, I, I pay attention, I look
- 39:29at how people are reviewing things and if people are saying
- 39:33it's a banger and I know it's going to be 5 stars all day, you
- 39:37know, kind of thing. I buy it goes on the shelf.
- 39:40You should see what I have pre-order.
- 39:42You should see I have all kinds of things in pre-order.
- 39:44I mean, I, I know everything that Carissa, everything that
- 39:48she has done I know is amazing because I've read how she
- 39:52writes. I love it.
- 39:53I know her her daughter of no worlds.
- 39:56What I always call that because that's the first book.
- 39:58I always forget what the actual series is called.
- 40:01It's the war of lost hearts. I I never call it that.
- 40:05I always say daughter. Neither do I.
- 40:06So do I. You know, I know, I mean, I've
- 40:11seen so many people. I mean, this is the third one,
- 40:14but I have so many people have said that this is an absolute
- 40:18amazing series. So I'm very thank my husband got
- 40:20that for me for Christmas. So I know she's an auto buy, but
- 40:24I have her. I have Laura Thalassus because
- 40:26like I said, Bewitches the fourth.
- 40:29Well, it's the third book in the series, but there's four books
- 40:32because there's a prequel in there.
- 40:34Again, if you read that, read Bewitched, read be Spelled, then
- 40:37read The Curse of Binds, because if you read The Curse of Binds,
- 40:42then you know, you know more it it takes the mystery out of the
- 40:46other two books, if that makes sense.
- 40:48Yeah, Yeah. And again, I've read it and I
- 40:52knew what was coming in The Curse of Binds, and I still
- 40:54cried. It got me.
- 40:56When a book makes you cry, you know, it's a good book.
- 40:59So I'm excited for a Bedeviled that comes out in August.
- 41:03I believe in quarter three. I have here, I have 16, there's
- 41:0716 books that are coming out that I'm super excited about and
- 41:10I have. Wow, I have a lot of different
- 41:12ones. Pre pre-ordered now are you?
- 41:14Oh yeah, because you're going to be all over the place, so you
- 41:16won't be getting physical copy, you'll be getting.
- 41:19No one Kindle though I will be. Yes.
- 41:22My husband has limited me to 5 physical books in the car so
- 41:30we'll see how that goes. It might not last very long, but
- 41:34yes, I have a lot on my Kindle. How many do you do Kindle
- 41:39Unlimited? Or do you just pick and choose
- 41:41as you go? I do both.
- 41:44I also do a lot through my library because my library has
- 41:51three different apps that I can use to do audio and ebooks, so
- 41:55they're really good and they've got a decent range.
- 42:01Nick, does your library, do they do the graphic audios too or do
- 42:03you have to do that separate? I don't know because I don't
- 42:06know does the library do they do graphic audio?
- 42:09Yeah, my library did Graphic Audio.
- 42:11That's how I did this, the Crescent City.
- 42:14I did the third Crescent City on Graphic Audio.
- 42:18Interesting experience. Very fancy, but now.
- 42:24But now me. I like I love having a a book in
- 42:27my hand. I have to say.
- 42:29Now I but now I do mix though. Now this is paperback I have.
- 42:34I love a good paperback and I love it because this has that
- 42:36flop to it. You know what I mean?
- 42:39Oh, I love a good flop too, but yet I have some of her books.
- 42:43This only comes in hardback, but I have Fallen and The Kiss of
- 42:46Dusk. I have that one.
- 42:47It's hardback. All the other ones are
- 42:49paperback. I mix a match.
- 42:52Does that bother you when you do that?
- 42:54Look a little bit, yeah, but in Australia most of our books come
- 42:59out first in paperback and then come out in hardback, not the
- 43:03other way. I.
- 43:04Wonder why it does that? I don't know.
- 43:08I don't know because everyone, I remember they made a big deal
- 43:10about ACUTAR and everyone was. Like, Oh my God, it's.
- 43:13Going to come out in hardback and it's going to be different
- 43:16from my paperbacks. And I was like, OK, so how many
- 43:18copies of ACUTAR 6:00 AM I ordering and deliver it to the
- 43:22US because they're in paperback and not in hardback?
- 43:25You see, I now I have a guitar, but I have the paperback, so I
- 43:29have the colorful set. But.
- 43:32I have, I have book 6 pre Ord and it's going to be hardback.
- 43:36So it's not and it's not going to match.
- 43:40So I have now I am not a person. Now some people like you know,
- 43:43they like to buy multiple copies of the same book.
- 43:47I don't I don't do that, but I I am contemplating possibly doing
- 43:51that with a guitar if I want my set to match.
- 43:56Yes, because, yeah, otherwise you've got to wait.
- 43:58Like how long have you got to wait for that paperback to come
- 44:00out? You just don't know it right?
- 44:01Well, if it's October, I'm going to say at least six months.
- 44:06It could be before paperback. I'm not waiting that long to
- 44:09find out what's happened. You'll be lucky to last a week
- 44:12without spoilers on social media.
- 44:15I know and also people, when you do get to that, hold off, calm
- 44:20your tits. You know, don't post spoilers,
- 44:24people, you know, people want to know things or or market like do
- 44:29a carousel, multiple slides and say spoiler, don't go forward
- 44:33spoiler 'cause it's it's awful when you're, you know, you're
- 44:36reading a book or you're going to read a book that's just come
- 44:39out. Maybe you didn't get to read it
- 44:41right at the exact moment everyone else did.
- 44:44And then you start seeing spoilers and stuff like that.
- 44:48That's Boo. Don't do that.
- 44:50That's that's not nice. No.
- 44:54So now, so now we will be right back, even though this is
- 44:58technically after the fact, but for you, we will be right back
- 45:03with Chris Abrobend I. Hope you enjoy it, we had a
- 45:06fabulous time. Oh.
- 45:07Absolutely. And Elsa, She is the sweetest
- 45:10lady in the entire world. The nicest lady, honestly.
- 45:14Absolutely. And hopefully and hopefully
- 45:17she'll come back later on this year or maybe the beginning of
- 45:20next year and come visit us again because she was very, she
- 45:24was very enjoyable. So we'll see you in a few
- 45:26moments. Yeah, bye.
- 45:31Hello and welcome Carissa Broadbent, now a #1 New York
- 45:36Times and US today. Best selling author and also the
- 45:41vampire romantic Sea Queen. Welcome.
- 45:44How are you? I am wonderful.
- 45:47Thank you so much for having me. I am so happy.
- 45:51I have to tell you now, my friend Heather, she's another
- 45:55one of my Co hosts on the podcast. her and I have we
- 45:59always rave all the time about about your books.
- 46:03And I have to tell you, Mr. Vincent, that is in the first
- 46:07duet, for some reason, her and I call him Victor all the time.
- 46:14We have done full episodes where we've been talking and have a
- 46:18full conversation and not realize it.
- 46:20And for some reason, Vincent is Victor to us.
- 46:24You are not the only one. He gets called Victor a lot, so
- 46:27I'm not not offended by that. Neither is he, I'm sure.
- 46:30Well I as you can tell I loved. I love the serpent in the wings
- 46:34tonight and I absolutely I loved 6 scorch roses.
- 46:38This is my absolute favorite novella I've ever read.
- 46:43I just, I love it and I love well, as you can tell, I love it
- 46:47and I annotate. I am so excited for your
- 46:51upcoming book that's coming out on what is it, August 4th
- 46:55August. 4th. And that is book, and that's
- 46:59book one in the last duet of the of the series.
- 47:05Yep. So it's the penultimate book of
- 47:07the whole series. We're getting towards the end.
- 47:10Very surreal. I am so excited.
- 47:12I I have read the first three. I also have you're slaying the
- 47:16vampire conquer. I have it.
- 47:19They're all staring at me from my bookcase, but I have I
- 47:23haven't had a chance to and I also have my husband bought me
- 47:26for Christmas. I have all of this series as
- 47:30well of yours. Oh well, I'm sorry to keep you
- 47:33so busy. I, I love it.
- 47:37I absolutely love it. Now question for you, So what
- 47:40are you currently reading or what is keeping you up at night?
- 47:46My 3 year old mostly. I am actually not reading
- 47:51anything right now because I just.
- 47:54I don't have the the time that the brain space.
- 47:57I have like very bad pregnancy brain because as I was telling
- 48:00you guys before we started rolling, I am at time of
- 48:04recording 8-8 months and change pregnant and also trying very
- 48:09hard to finish the draft of the final nyaxia book before this
- 48:13baby is born between us. I don't don't know if it's going
- 48:16to happen but I'm doing my best. So there's not a lot of brain
- 48:21space leftover lately for for reading.
- 48:24Unfortunately, the last book I finished was yesteryear, which a
- 48:29lot of times when I'm. Yeah, a lot of times when I'm
- 48:32drafting, I read very far outside of my genre.
- 48:34Like I read things that are just totally unrelated to
- 48:37romanticity, and it was riveting.
- 48:40Like I read it in 24 hours. Oh wow.
- 48:43Oh, what genre is that book in? Would we call it, I want to call
- 48:51it like women's lit kind of Yeah, right.
- 48:56It's like. It's about like a woman who ends
- 48:59up going back in time, like she wants to live like her tried
- 49:04wife life, but she ends up getting transported back in
- 49:07time. It has to live it.
- 49:08And about like how that goes for her.
- 49:11It's actually quite interesting. Rebecca doesn't fade a lot of
- 49:16contemporary. Or anything.
- 49:18In that sort of direction, definitely more my wheelhouse
- 49:21than Rebecca's, but that's OK. I, I am very deep in my villain
- 49:26era. That is where I'm at.
- 49:28I'm in spicy romanticy, dark fantasy, dark romance.
- 49:34That is my my wheelhouse. That's why I had no idea what
- 49:37that book was. That's totally fine.
- 49:40I mean, my assistant who like, does books for a living, you
- 49:45know, like her job is working in the book world and everything.
- 49:48And even she was like, I've never heard of.
- 49:50That was just shocking to me because in my circles, like,
- 49:53everyone is talking about this book.
- 49:54But yeah, everyone's, yeah, everyone's got their wheelhouse.
- 49:58Well, like that's the thing that's neat about like all the
- 50:01different girls that that I do the podcast with.
- 50:04Everybody brings a little bit of something different.
- 50:06We're not all, you know, they're not all the same as me.
- 50:10And a lot of them do read contemporary romance.
- 50:13They read thrillers, they read, you know, everything.
- 50:17So a lot of times when it's something like that, I'm like
- 50:20that. I don't know.
- 50:21So that's why I have Kirstie and I have all the other girls and
- 50:24they're like, well, yes, we've read this now.
- 50:28Now I have a question for you now, because you were an indie
- 50:33author and now you are traditional.
- 50:35Are you liking being a traditionally published author
- 50:39now versus being just an indie or as an indie I.
- 50:44Actually am still hybrid, meaning that there are aspects
- 50:48of my career that are indie and aspects that are traditional.
- 50:51So I still retain all of my like all of my ebooks are still
- 50:55published by me at this point. Yeah.
- 50:58And that's been very important to me.
- 51:01I always say, you know, I never, never say never about anything
- 51:05that I try not to speak in extremes, but I very, very, very
- 51:11strongly believe there will always be some indie aspect to
- 51:14my career like it would take I, I don't even know what it would
- 51:19take to have me give up all of my, my independent rights and
- 51:25control over my career. So I, I'm really grateful to be
- 51:29in the position I'm in right now where I kind of get the best of
- 51:32both worlds, where I get, you know, the support of my
- 51:35publisher and the distribution that is impossible, you know,
- 51:40when you're independent and also get to collaborate with all of
- 51:43these immensely talented people that I get to work with that my
- 51:46publisher while still also maintaining the control of my
- 51:50career that I can have by having those in the aspects of my
- 51:55career too. That's pretty awesome.
- 51:58I, I think that's, I think it's nice that you get to have that
- 52:02option to do that. And it's still, you still, like
- 52:06you said, you still have your rights.
- 52:08You still, you're, you have control.
- 52:10Because I have seen different authors that were indie and that
- 52:14have gone completely traditional and they have lost their voice a
- 52:21lot in it. They don't have the choice
- 52:24necessarily like what is happening with their books or
- 52:27their covers. And and you can see that some of
- 52:31them, it's not happy. Like they said now this is
- 52:35supposedly something going on because they said with the Sarah
- 52:38J Mass or Moss, they're they, they said they think she's
- 52:43having some issues there with, with her publisher and stuff.
- 52:47And there's possibility that she could go back to being indie and
- 52:52not have a publisher, I think. I mean, I think she could do it
- 52:58because she has such a following.
- 53:01Oh yeah, I mean she like you think of like so she has, to my
- 53:08knowledge, always been traditionally published.
- 53:10Like, she from the get go had a traditional deal, but she is so
- 53:14huge. You know, you think of like
- 53:18Brandon Sanderson, for example, who kind of stepped his foot
- 53:22into Indian hybrid publishing when he did, you know, a few
- 53:25years ago that Kickstarter campaign that earned like $20
- 53:27million or something. Good for him, you know, amazing.
- 53:31Like Brandon Sanderson, Sarah J. Moss, those are two of the big,
- 53:36big names in the fantasy world that I think could make
- 53:39boatloads of money, you know, doing this kind of stuff and
- 53:44probably have the access to also, you know, they can kind of
- 53:51get past a lot of the roadblocks that like your average indie
- 53:54author or even, you know, someone at my level like can't
- 53:59get past, you know, distribution wise, like because Target is
- 54:03always going to want to talk Sarah J Moss's new book and they
- 54:05will figure out what they got to do to be able to stock it.
- 54:08So that thought has actually crossed my mind as well.
- 54:11You know, and once you get to a level where your name carries
- 54:16just such astronomical weight, I have to imagine that a lot of
- 54:20authors at that level start to become aware of that, you know,
- 54:26and the options that that opens up for them.
- 54:29Well, you know, cuz I was thinking, you know, if she did
- 54:32do that, I mean that would cut out a lot of the the middle men
- 54:35kind of thing. But like you said, I think
- 54:38every, you know, bookstore, you know, you know, big box
- 54:43bookstore versus even like the, you know, your indie bookstores
- 54:47would carry anything she did. Because when I was listening to
- 54:51her interview that she did back in March when she announced, you
- 54:54know, Book 6 and all that kind of stuff, you could tell her
- 54:58that there, there's some, there's some turbulence
- 55:00underneath the surface of the water there.
- 55:02So maybe we will see what happens after Book 8, you know,
- 55:06once that one comes out, what she does.
- 55:10I think that the relationship between authors and publishers
- 55:12is always, you know, it's a partnership, but it's always
- 55:17like, OK, so I used to work in marketing business to business
- 55:21marketing and cybersecurity, like in the tech industry.
- 55:24And yeah, totally applicable to what I do now.
- 55:31And we always used to say, like back then that there was always
- 55:34like a healthy tension between sales and marketing, right?
- 55:39So like, because in a way, like the sales team was kind of like
- 55:42my clients, like I produced content so that they could go
- 55:46take it and go like sell our software to people, right?
- 55:50And that's actually kind of how I think about authors and
- 55:52publishers sometimes. We're like in the best author
- 55:56publisher relationships, everyone is feeling respected.
- 56:00You know, everyone is, is getting what they want out of
- 56:06each other. But also there always should be
- 56:08kind of some degree of like, like you're kind of pushing and
- 56:12pulling each other to some degree because you're like
- 56:14you're operating different arms of the machine, right?
- 56:17And in a good relationship, everyone is like aware of that
- 56:21and doing that in like a very respectful way.
- 56:25But as you said, sometimes, you know, sometimes it breaks down,
- 56:28sometimes like the tension just does not working out the way
- 56:31that it should. Well, I think like when she
- 56:34talked about there and she was saying like how she was in a
- 56:38very similar situation as you are right now.
- 56:40You know, she was ready to have her baby and then they wanted
- 56:44her to cut all kinds of pages or you know, from her, from one of
- 56:49her ACOTAR books. I believe it was actor.
- 56:52It might have been Crescent City.
- 56:54And then she went and she did all that and then they said, oh,
- 56:57never mind, wait, it's fine. After she did all of that and
- 57:00you could tell there's. Some.
- 57:03There's some problems, yeah. So you know.
- 57:06Kill me. Yeah.
- 57:08I'm, I'm very grateful that I've never had, like my publisher and
- 57:12my editor, the, the team that I work with at Bramble has been
- 57:15really excellent with, you know, they, I get a lot of control,
- 57:21you know, over things. Like they, they've never, of
- 57:24course they have opinions about things as they should.
- 57:27This is a big part of their business, you know, but there's
- 57:29never been like, you know, like the, my trilogy, the World Lost
- 57:33Hearts trilogy, like those cover redesigns.
- 57:37I did those myself. Like I didn't do the artwork.
- 57:40I mean, I like, did the art direction.
- 57:42I had them commissioned. Yeah, I, yeah, I produced, you
- 57:46know, yeah, I started with my favorite illustrator of all
- 57:49time. It was like a passion project
- 57:51for me. We worked on it for over a year
- 57:53together after Wink. He's he's amazing.
- 57:58And I was originally going to do all that indie and then, you
- 58:01know, I was having a good, good relationship with my publisher
- 58:06and was kind of like, you know, I'd love to work with them on
- 58:09this if they're interested in it.
- 58:10And I kind of like brought them all the stuff and was like, here
- 58:14it is. It's all done.
- 58:15And there are some publishers who would have been like, you
- 58:18don't know, or they would have like pushed back, uncover things
- 58:22or whatever. But they have always been like
- 58:24very accommodating, which is really has been excellent.
- 58:28But I have. Seen that too.
- 58:31Yeah, right. And it's, it's also kind of a,
- 58:34it's also kind of a, a game of roulette sometimes where it's
- 58:37like, I mean, the publishing industry has so much turnover.
- 58:40So even when, you know, authors criticize publishers, they're
- 58:44never criticizing the people that they work with because for
- 58:46the most part, everyone that they're talking to, the editors,
- 58:50the editorial assistants, you know, the publicity people like
- 58:53everyone is just trying to do their job to the best of their
- 58:55ability. And everyone loves books and
- 58:58wants to see books succeed. It's, it's like the capitalism
- 59:01of it all. You know that, that people are
- 59:05complaining about and you know, sometimes you have like a great
- 59:09vibe with a certain editor or certain publicity person or
- 59:12whatever. And then they, they leave and
- 59:14take, take a better job because that's what they should do.
- 59:18But you get lucky sometimes. Now.
- 59:22Now, since you write such incredibly dark and spicy
- 59:25romanticy, what what originally drew you to that genre?
- 59:31As again, I have to tell you in The Serpent of Wings of Night
- 59:35and the the whole story there and then in Six Scorch Roses,
- 59:39Vale and Lola's story, I loved them so much.
- 59:45I was because now, Now let me ask you, since you are besides
- 59:48that question there when you were reading.
- 59:50Now, do you recommend reading The Serpent in the Wings of
- 59:53Night, then Six Scorch Roses and then the ashes of the Star
- 59:57Cursed King, or do you have a particular order that you should
- 1:00:02read them? And I read it in between and
- 1:00:04then I, for me, it gave that, you know, background and it was
- 1:00:08just so beautiful. I have to tell you well.
- 1:00:10Thank you. I thank you for the six scorched
- 1:00:12roses, love. I was very surprised when I I
- 1:00:14was at book con recently and I was shocked that Six Scorched
- 1:00:19Roses, which is, I mean, I think comfortably my lowest selling
- 1:00:23book right out of all of my books.
- 1:00:28It was the book that was mentioned the most to me, like
- 1:00:31by people coming up to me. Yeah, which was like shocking to
- 1:00:34me. I very much wrote it for myself.
- 1:00:36Like I was just like, I had a, like a, a contractual obligation
- 1:00:41to an anthology and I wrote it in like 2 1/2 weeks.
- 1:00:44Like I wrote it really, really fast because I was like, oh
- 1:00:46shit, like I have to write this book.
- 1:00:49Nobody's going to like it. So I should just write like
- 1:00:52whatever that I, I want to write.
- 1:00:54And so many people have connected with it and it's very
- 1:00:56close to my heart. So thank you.
- 1:01:00I designed it to be a standalone in the sense that you can read
- 1:01:04it. If you haven't read any of my
- 1:01:05books, you can read it at any point, just whenever.
- 1:01:09But I do think if I was going to give someone like an ideal
- 1:01:13reading order, reading it between Serpent and Ashes does
- 1:01:16give you a little bit more context when these characters
- 1:01:20turn up, you know, in that second book.
- 1:01:22And kind of similar with Slaying the Vampire Conqueror.
- 1:01:25Like I get asked about reading order a lot because all the time
- 1:01:30I created such. I don't know what I was thinking
- 1:01:32guys. I mean, I just I have to follow
- 1:01:34through now, you know, because it was like always the plan from
- 1:01:37the beginning how this whole series was structured.
- 1:01:41But now like looking back also maybe because I'm tired and I'm
- 1:01:45working on the last book, I'm like, what the hell was I
- 1:01:47thinking? Like this is like, you know,
- 1:01:50people get confused about reading order and I as a reader,
- 1:01:55I am someone who is very lackadaisical about reading
- 1:01:58order. Like, you know, like
- 1:01:59contemporary romance series or romance series where it's like
- 1:02:02all each book is a standalone about a couple, Right, yes, and
- 1:02:06a lot of times those series will kind of have like a big picture
- 1:02:09plot of some kind across or like other couples will show up.
- 1:02:13So there will kind of be like minor spoilers for other books.
- 1:02:16I don't care. I will start with book 5.
- 1:02:18Like I don't I am like a very. So when people like sometimes I
- 1:02:22talk about my own reading orders and readers are like, this is
- 1:02:26wrong. Like I disagree, like, oh, I did
- 1:02:28this in the wrong order and now I have to go back and I'm like,
- 1:02:31just relax. It's OK, It's fine.
- 1:02:33You can read it whichever way you want like it's fine so.
- 1:02:40I went to Instagram to see if I could find the rating order
- 1:02:44because I'd only read the first geology and my goodness, it did
- 1:02:48not help and I think it made it worse.
- 1:02:49In fact, saying everyone's differing opinions of what I
- 1:02:52needed to read next was quite funny.
- 1:02:55Everyone has to, they have very strong opinions about it.
- 1:02:58And I kind of feel like, especially when it comes to like
- 1:03:02the, the main six books, you know, they're kind of divided up
- 1:03:05into three sections, but they're designed to be roughly, you
- 1:03:08know, books one through 6. So like if you want your ideal
- 1:03:11reading order there, just read books one through 6.
- 1:03:15The other two, you can read them, you can skip them, you can
- 1:03:19read them whenever you want. You can read them first.
- 1:03:22I have some suggestions. Like I said, if you wanted like
- 1:03:24an ideal reading order, you might want to do roses between
- 1:03:281:00 and 2:00 slaying maybe after two I guess.
- 1:03:32But like whenever I say that people are like, no, this is
- 1:03:36wrong. I you can skip them.
- 1:03:39You don't have to read them at all.
- 1:03:40If you can, read them whatever you want.
- 1:03:43Now I haven't read. I haven't read Slaying yet
- 1:03:45because again, I have them all sitting here waiting for me, but
- 1:03:50nobody, please do not skip this one because this one is it's,
- 1:03:55it's just little and it's so wonderful and again, I love that
- 1:03:59one so much. I love Lilith, I love Vale that
- 1:04:02just there. It's just so beautiful.
- 1:04:05Again, I will say it again, I just love it.
- 1:04:08I can't. Kirstie hasn't read that one
- 1:04:10yet. I haven't.
- 1:04:12I went straight from 1:00 to 2:00 and then literally today I
- 1:04:16finished the song but and the Heart of Stone, which was
- 1:04:21problematic because it finished on a cliffhanger and now I have
- 1:04:23to do this and then I can start the next one.
- 1:04:27Yeah, so it's a pretty brutal one too, so.
- 1:04:30It is. It is.
- 1:04:31I was like, no, this isn't. This isn't happening.
- 1:04:36Help. Me.
- 1:04:37It's OK, it's all going to be fine.
- 1:04:42Wasn't it? Oh, don't say.
- 1:04:45That don't say that in my head it's going to be fine.
- 1:04:48In my head it's. So now how did you get into
- 1:04:52writing, you know, dark fantasy and romanticy.
- 1:04:55What sparked you? What got you into into writing?
- 1:05:00So I used to write a lot as a kid, like as a young teenager,
- 1:05:05and I am a millennial. I'm 3033.
- 1:05:09I have to like stop and think about it now, which is probably
- 1:05:11telling you something, right? I am 33 at time of recording as
- 1:05:15far as I recall. And that means that I came of
- 1:05:20age and like the golden age of the Internet.
- 1:05:23Like I always want to take people who are like 25 aside and
- 1:05:26be like, no, the Internet used to be like, great.
- 1:05:28Now it's like 5 websites and they're all evil, you know, and
- 1:05:32they're all like trying to take over the world and it's still
- 1:05:35fascism or whatever. But it used to be like there
- 1:05:38were lots of websites for any like weird shit that you ever
- 1:05:40wanted to do you could find. Like there was lots of like, you
- 1:05:45know, people like writing online, like chapter by chapter,
- 1:05:49which is what I did. Yes.
- 1:05:52So I used to write. Oh, see.
- 1:05:55OK. So you understand.
- 1:05:56Yeah. Back in the day I used to do.
- 1:06:00I don't know if you were nerdy enough for this.
- 1:06:02I used to do. Like do you remember forum
- 1:06:03role-playing do? You remember those?
- 1:06:06Sorry, I do not. OK, so there was like, do you,
- 1:06:10do you guys remember forums, like forums?
- 1:06:13Yes, Oh yes. Right.
- 1:06:15So for the young ones, listening forums were like it's like
- 1:06:19Reddit but like smaller, right? Like message boards and there
- 1:06:25used to be like role play, like they would call them RPS, like
- 1:06:30games. And it was basically like you
- 1:06:31wrote a character, right? And then like somebody else
- 1:06:34would like come and write their character and like come into
- 1:06:36your like threat. So it would be like, oh, if you
- 1:06:38were doing like a magical Academy, what or whatever.
- 1:06:41And I wrote my character like studying in the library.
- 1:06:43And then you could write your character like coming in and
- 1:06:45being attacked by goblins or whatever.
- 1:06:47I don't know whatever it is, but you were basically like writing
- 1:06:50stories collaboratively with, like, other people anyway.
- 1:06:55So I did all that nerdy stuff when I was a kid, and it was
- 1:06:57always fantasy because I don't like playing by the rules, so I
- 1:07:02like to make up my own rules. And there was always some degree
- 1:07:05of romance in it. And actually, Daughter of No
- 1:07:09Worlds borrows heavily from a book that I was writing chapter
- 1:07:13by chapter online when I was like 13 years old, including
- 1:07:17some of the really dark stuff. So yeah.
- 1:07:21That's very cool. That is very cool now because
- 1:07:24I'm older than you, both of you. I graduated from high school in
- 1:07:2898. So I was the Internet was just
- 1:07:33got starting there the late 90s. You know, I remember we got our
- 1:07:37first computer in 96 and you know, there were chat rooms and
- 1:07:41chat rooms aren't like like how things are today.
- 1:07:44And I actually met my first husband in a chat room back
- 1:07:51then. Oh, I know.
- 1:07:53So that's How I Met him. And then but oh, yeah.
- 1:07:56But they were like, they were those message boards and stuff.
- 1:07:59Like they have no idea. Like, like people like my even
- 1:08:02my own kids, they don't understand.
- 1:08:04There was a thing called ICQI. Think is what it was.
- 1:08:07It was a little app and everybody could talk on it.
- 1:08:11You know, it was just a very, the Internet was a very
- 1:08:14different time then. And of course, then later on, of
- 1:08:18course the vines and all that stuff started and then now I
- 1:08:22don't even know what the Internet is.
- 1:08:24The Internet's a very interesting place right now.
- 1:08:28And right now also, you can't tell is, you know, what you're
- 1:08:32seeing real and some things can you are not real.
- 1:08:35You know what I mean? It's it is an interesting time
- 1:08:38to be alive right now. Yeah, interesting is one word
- 1:08:42for it. So now your career has been very
- 1:08:45amazing to watch by navigating between all this, you know,
- 1:08:52between you know, you know, your indie world now and your
- 1:08:55traditionally put, you know, world.
- 1:08:58What, what do you see for the future?
- 1:09:01What, where are you going after this series is done?
- 1:09:04What is your next project? Oh, I, well, like, I know I
- 1:09:12can't tell you tell him yet. I do have another project in the
- 1:09:18works that's exciting. Yeah, it's it's I actually, I
- 1:09:23think an announcement will come at some point.
- 1:09:25I, I don't know, I at this point it's like you're like along for
- 1:09:28the ride and you're like, what? Whatever.
- 1:09:33And it's going to be quite a it will be it's different, you
- 1:09:41know, I never, I never want to write the same thing over and
- 1:09:44over again. And that's why, you know, I have
- 1:09:48my 2 series and they're quite different from each other.
- 1:09:51And then even within the Crowns of Niaxia series, I had no that
- 1:09:55there are some people who have not liked later books in the
- 1:09:59series, but as is completely their right, you know, because
- 1:10:02the series changes and evolves and it looks at different
- 1:10:05characters in different settings and stuff like that.
- 1:10:07Because as an artist, it's not interesting to me to write the
- 1:10:10same story over and over again. I always want to be exploring
- 1:10:13something new and different so my next series is different.
- 1:10:18I'm a little bit tired of like swords and Crowns and Thrones
- 1:10:24romanticity. So, so yeah, that's all.
- 1:10:28I'm very excited about it. I'm very, very excited about it.
- 1:10:31So that's all I can say about that.
- 1:10:33But it is a series, not a standalone.
- 1:10:36It is not a standalone, but I'll tell you what it is not.
- 1:10:39It is also not a eight book fucking series because I'm never
- 1:10:42doing that again. Well, this is exciting.
- 1:10:48I mean, I love how you write. I just have to tell you I enjoy
- 1:10:52reading. How I just, you're a very easy
- 1:10:55read for me and I, it's just I very get very immersed into the
- 1:11:00world's and I love it. So that's exciting.
- 1:11:03I'm super excited. For it.
- 1:11:05Well, I hope you like it once it's out.
- 1:11:08I'm sure I will. You are one of my obviously
- 1:11:11you're one of my auto buy authors.
- 1:11:13You know, as soon as you have something, it is pre-ordered.
- 1:11:16Now I do have the Lion and the Deathless dark.
- 1:11:19It is pre-ordered. So I am super excited to add
- 1:11:21that to my collection that's here now.
- 1:11:25Are you excited for it to come out?
- 1:11:27And to be out, I am, I am very excited.
- 1:11:31I'm excited. I, I had a lot of fun writing
- 1:11:33that one. It was probably one of my more,
- 1:11:37you know, every book is fun in its own way and every book is
- 1:11:41like miserable in its own way. But I would say like, this book
- 1:11:46was particularly fun, you know, to write.
- 1:11:48I really, really love the female main character and her
- 1:11:52relationship with the lead. It was just it was a lot of fun
- 1:11:57to write. And I think it's one of my
- 1:12:01better books, you know, like I've written what, like 10 or 12
- 1:12:04or something, something in that vicinity at this point.
- 1:12:08So you can never pick a favorite child.
- 1:12:09Like it changes a lot, but I really feel like this is one of
- 1:12:13my my better books and I'm very excited for people to read it.
- 1:12:18And if I'm going to just like throw a grenade into the whole
- 1:12:20reading order thing again, I do think there is a significant gap
- 1:12:28right between books. This this book in the previous
- 1:12:32book in the series and because we're have a whole new main
- 1:12:36character, like a whole new POV character, I did write, I do try
- 1:12:40to write every first book in the duology to be comprehendible if
- 1:12:45somebody were to pick it up, you know, without having read all of
- 1:12:49the books in the series. So I do get questions sometimes
- 1:12:53about like, oh, do I have to have read like every single my
- 1:12:56Axia book, you know, to read this book.
- 1:12:59And of course, if you do, there is contacts that will make more
- 1:13:02sense to you. But if you don't, it is also
- 1:13:06designed to be read you know, whenever you pick it up.
- 1:13:12Interesting. Well, I will, will you?
- 1:13:14Well, me, I will be definitely reading it through the order.
- 1:13:17That's me. I like, I like to do that, but
- 1:13:21but I have to tell you the other thing is your covers on this
- 1:13:24series, they are so beautiful. I mean, look at that.
- 1:13:28I mean, I know and the one that's coming up there in the
- 1:13:31purples and stuff, they're just so beautiful.
- 1:13:35Now is the the artist that did these books, is it the same that
- 1:13:38did your new covers on your other series?
- 1:13:42Or is this a different artist? Different artists, I do try to
- 1:13:45do different artists. You know, there are certain
- 1:13:47artists I I really like collaborating with, so I'll work
- 1:13:50with them a lot. But I do try to, for different
- 1:13:52series, get different artists just to like, you know, my
- 1:13:54favorite part of this job actually is getting to
- 1:13:56collaborate with so many talented people.
- 1:13:59I have a huge admiration for the work that artists do.
- 1:14:02And I know it's like particularly important to value
- 1:14:06those skills right now because they are getting like, their
- 1:14:11industry is getting its ass kicked, you know, by AI, which
- 1:14:15is just stealing their own stuff and regurgitating it back for
- 1:14:18three other people. That's a whole rant for another
- 1:14:21day. But I think it's very important
- 1:14:22to support actual artists doing this work.
- 1:14:27So anyway, the crowns of an Axia series, those covers were all
- 1:14:31done by Katie Ritchie. And they're like, so wonderful
- 1:14:34to work with. And I actually commissioned all
- 1:14:38of those covers, as indie authors often do.
- 1:14:40Before. I had written any of the books,
- 1:14:43so I had all of them. Yeah.
- 1:14:45And I brought them to my publisher when they, you know,
- 1:14:48picked up the series in print. It was like, here once again.
- 1:14:50Here you go. It's all done.
- 1:14:52Have fun. I've.
- 1:14:53Done your job twice. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:14:57I make it. They are.
- 1:14:59They are absolutely, they're beautiful that I am a look, I am
- 1:15:04a little bit of a cover snob. I, I judge a book by the cover
- 1:15:07and but I have to tell you that I mean, I love a beautiful book
- 1:15:12and yours I think are some of the most beautiful covers that I
- 1:15:15own. And that's my opinion.
- 1:15:18That's very flattering on Behalf.
- 1:15:20I mean, I did none of the work, but it's still very flattering.
- 1:15:25Like I said, it's one of my favorite price of the process so
- 1:15:27I do my best. No, my, my niece, she does
- 1:15:31graphic art and she is just dipping her toe and doing
- 1:15:37illustration app for books and things like that.
- 1:15:39And right now she is currently doing the illustrations of a
- 1:15:44children's book and the cover. And I keep telling her because
- 1:15:48she's, she's a wonderful artist in that.
- 1:15:49And I'm like, you need to come join me in my book world because
- 1:15:53I told her, I said so many people would love what you do.
- 1:15:57And she's like, oh, I don't know, I try.
- 1:16:01She's just she's she's just a little bit older than you. 2 My
- 1:16:06niece and I, we're real close in age.
- 1:16:07We're only nine years apart. So, but she's still, she's still
- 1:16:11my baby, even though she's 35 years old, but she's still,
- 1:16:16she's still my little peanut. But but yeah, I keep encouraging
- 1:16:19her to to do that because I do think artists think people need
- 1:16:24to see that. It's sad that AI has done a lot
- 1:16:28of the things. I think there's probably going
- 1:16:30to be a place for AI, you know, because we're in, you know, the
- 1:16:34infancy of it, but not in that respect.
- 1:16:39You know, when it's replacing people, you know, artists or,
- 1:16:42you know, writers or any of that kind of stuff.
- 1:16:45I, you know, it's, I think it'll be detrimental to our society as
- 1:16:50a whole. You know what I mean?
- 1:16:52Oh, I do. I agree.
- 1:16:54Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:16:56And I think that your niece should should dip her toes into
- 1:16:58the book world. I mean, there's such an appetite
- 1:17:01among among book readers for, you know, beautiful, human made
- 1:17:07art. So she should come over here.
- 1:17:09We love it. I.
- 1:17:12She she has a little page where on Instagram where she does like
- 1:17:17time lapse with her art and stuff when she is drawing.
- 1:17:20And I told her I want her to do one for me.
- 1:17:23I want her to make a dragon for me and, and paint and so
- 1:17:27everybody can watch her do her stuff.
- 1:17:29But she hasn't, she hasn't done it yet for me.
- 1:17:32So I have to keep encouraging her.
- 1:17:35I'm hoping like, you know, the more and more that people see
- 1:17:37it, that maybe it'll give her the confidence to show her stuff
- 1:17:40more to, you know, to authors and things like that.
- 1:17:44And maybe she will dip her toe into it.
- 1:17:47But you know, you know how that is.
- 1:17:50But now now with the new book coming out, question for you.
- 1:17:54Is it going to be an enemies to lovers kind of vibe or is it
- 1:17:58going to be a slow burn? What is our tropes that we're
- 1:18:02going into? Gotcha.
- 1:18:04It's. Both of those things I would
- 1:18:06say, yeah, almost all of actually, I think all of my
- 1:18:10romances have been slow burns because I think it's because
- 1:18:14it's how my brain, you know, processes romances and like how
- 1:18:20I like to build them. Like I, I always want kind of
- 1:18:25like the the physical aspects of the romance to be like the
- 1:18:28culmination of a lot of like emotional build up.
- 1:18:32So I think, I think it's always tricky because also like
- 1:18:36people's definitions of slow burns change.
- 1:18:39Like there are some people who like don't consider it a slow
- 1:18:41burn. If there is any kind of romantic
- 1:18:44anything in the first book of the series, you know what I
- 1:18:46mean? There is there is, but it's like
- 1:18:51it's like at the end, I think in terms of like word like count,
- 1:18:55but it's also it's also one of my spicier books, despite it
- 1:19:01being a slow burn because the characters they are very
- 1:19:05aggressive, like like she in particular Kyrene, the main
- 1:19:10character. She is.
- 1:19:12I have never written a character like her before.
- 1:19:14She is definitely like someone who lets the intrusive thoughts
- 1:19:17win like basically every time. And that is so fun as a writer,
- 1:19:21especially because I've written a lot of characters who are like
- 1:19:24kind of mired and self doubt or like characters who aren't like
- 1:19:27thinking a lot about, not that she is thinking a lot about
- 1:19:30things, but she's kind of thinking after she acts.
- 1:19:33So as a result, she's just like always making shit happen.
- 1:19:38So there is a pretty, there's a pretty antagonistic relationship
- 1:19:43between her and Septimus. You know, they're pushing each
- 1:19:45other's buttons a lot. Nice.
- 1:19:49Is now as an author now for you now is it, is it hard for you to
- 1:19:53write the spicy kind of scenes and stuff?
- 1:19:56Because, you know, I was talking to author Stephanie Storm and
- 1:20:01she's hilarious. And she was doing a scene in her
- 1:20:05book and it was and it was 2 ladies, you know, and that
- 1:20:09relationship and she was trying to talk to her editor.
- 1:20:12And her publisher, she was talking to them and she's like,
- 1:20:15before we get going, she's like, can I have a glass of wine or
- 1:20:18something? And they're like, calm down,
- 1:20:19Stephanie. You know, we're professionals
- 1:20:22and that kind of stuff. But does it?
- 1:20:24Is it hard for you or does it flow just just perfect from you?
- 1:20:31I it's, I'm pretty used to it at this point.
- 1:20:36I would say the first time, like Daughter of No Worlds, that was
- 1:20:39the first time I had written like an open door, like an open
- 1:20:43door love scene, we'll say. And I remember at the time
- 1:20:47feeling like that scene was like so spicy.
- 1:20:51And now, like I read it again, you know, 'cause about the new
- 1:20:54additions and everything you have to go through and copy edit
- 1:20:56it and everything. And I'm like, oh, it's so cute,
- 1:20:59you know, like it's so sweet. Like it's so, and then I
- 1:21:03remember writing, so I wrote that trilogy.
- 1:21:07That trilogy is on page, you know, but it's also like epic
- 1:21:11fantasy. There's not that.
- 1:21:13There's also like logistically, right?
- 1:21:14It's like we're trying to save the world.
- 1:21:16There's not that much time to like stop and get it on, you
- 1:21:18know, like this is like a real issue.
- 1:21:21Like, you know, like the the fallen and the deathless dark in
- 1:21:27particular. There's also like a dog.
- 1:21:30And I used to have to like, be like, OK, how do I get the dog
- 1:21:32out of the room, you know, so that they're not like, doing
- 1:21:35his? Part of the dog you.
- 1:21:37Have to like deal with these logistics, but when I wrote the
- 1:21:41serpent in the wings at night, I was like, OK, this is going this
- 1:21:45series is maybe going to be kind of a step up, you know, in spice
- 1:21:48level. And serpent is also a slow burn.
- 1:21:51There was 11 like proper sex scene, but it was like 6000
- 1:21:58words long. Like I remember the draft for
- 1:22:00that was just like super, super long.
- 1:22:02And I was like, Oh my God, is this too much?
- 1:22:05Like I don't know, this like feels like this feels excessive.
- 1:22:08And then I put it out there for Arcs and people were like, wow,
- 1:22:11I really like this book. Shame that it's not spicy
- 1:22:14though. And I'm like, Jesus Christ, like
- 1:22:15what do you mean? What?
- 1:22:19Anyway, I I do find them difficult in the same way I find
- 1:22:24fight scenes difficult, actually, which is a comparison
- 1:22:27I make all the time that people, like, laugh at.
- 1:22:29But they can very easily be boring, right?
- 1:22:32Kind of like fight scenes, you know, because it's like you have
- 1:22:34to have like a like, like an arc to the action.
- 1:22:38So it's not just like describing a bunch of movements, you know?
- 1:22:42Yes, yes, yeah, right. You have to make it like
- 1:22:46interesting. Oh, yeah.
- 1:22:49So I try to focus on kind of like what the the reason for
- 1:22:52that scene existing is other than being like, OK, I need a
- 1:22:56sex scene here. Like what's the character reason
- 1:22:58for this to be here? Because otherwise you might as
- 1:23:01well just just say, you know, you might as well just kind of
- 1:23:05close the door on it, you know, as a reader, like I find it
- 1:23:09boring when there are like a bunch of meaningless sex scenes.
- 1:23:12So that's the most challenging part for me.
- 1:23:15Do you think when you are writing it, is it difficult in
- 1:23:19the descriptions because like sometimes you know authors that
- 1:23:23they have certain words like, you know, folds or the seam or
- 1:23:28you know, do you find it harder to write words for the female
- 1:23:33anatomy or you know those kind of descriptions or the male or
- 1:23:38do you not have issue with either?
- 1:23:41There are certain ones that kind of like squeak me out a little
- 1:23:43bit, you know, like, like for me, this is a big topic of
- 1:23:48debate amongst romance readers. For me, Dick is not a sexy word.
- 1:23:53Like that's like a, it's like an insult word or it's like a funny
- 1:23:56word or like a, but it's not like a, like a sexy word, you
- 1:24:00know, So I don't. And then I will say over time,
- 1:24:04my tolerance for like, kind of like in the beginning, I used to
- 1:24:09be very euphemistic about like anatomy words.
- 1:24:13And then over time you're just like, OK, I'll just throw them
- 1:24:16all up. And then also it also depends on
- 1:24:19the character because my books are first person narrate
- 1:24:22narrated. So I also feel like the way that
- 1:24:25the character talks also influences kind of like how like
- 1:24:29I have certain characters who would not use certain words, you
- 1:24:32know, when talking about their own experience.
- 1:24:36Yes. Yes.
- 1:24:37And then I have some characters who would like, throw down, like
- 1:24:40dirty talk. And that's when I have to, you
- 1:24:42know, I have to push my own limits.
- 1:24:46Always the, the thing, because you know this, I've seen through
- 1:24:49many, many different books and that the one that always makes
- 1:24:52me giggle is always with the men and always with, it's always
- 1:24:57within their trousers and, and when they unleash it and it
- 1:25:00springs free. Now, every time that I, I read
- 1:25:04that what I imagine in my mind is, you know, like the door
- 1:25:08stops at the back of the spring and it goes like this.
- 1:25:11And every time that is where my mind goes.
- 1:25:15But I, I love it. No, it's a very accurate.
- 1:25:19It's a very accurate, I mean it's.
- 1:25:23Kind of what they do. It's kind of what they do that
- 1:25:26is a true statement. Yeah.
- 1:25:27I just, I don't, I, I only read spicy books.
- 1:25:30I don't read any of the the closed door or the fade to black
- 1:25:35kind of thing. I like my descriptions.
- 1:25:37I like but but there's there's certain ways that it's written
- 1:25:43when it's written beautifully, even if it has like, you know,
- 1:25:46those kind of terms and it's like, you know, dirty, like
- 1:25:50really dirty. I love it.
- 1:25:53You know, it's just then the way you write it is.
- 1:25:55I have to tell you, you do very well.
- 1:25:57Oh. Thank you.
- 1:25:59Thank you too. Acquired skill like I said, I've
- 1:26:02been learning over the years. So thank you.
- 1:26:04Well and. Then.
- 1:26:05Even more sorry, I love the the one at the end of the first
- 1:26:12duality where like just before the big fight at the end.
- 1:26:16I think you know which one I'm talking about.
- 1:26:18That is my favorite one that I've read so far from very side.
- 1:26:21It's so good. But like you said, it's written
- 1:26:22so beautifully that yes, and it's so like Chris was saying,
- 1:26:26it's so in like it's got so much meaning behind it as well.
- 1:26:30And it's just makes you warm and fuzzy, you know, even though
- 1:26:33it's terrifying, what's about to happen, makes you all giddy
- 1:26:37inside which I. Thank you.
- 1:26:40I always try to have every couple, they have their
- 1:26:44emotional arc that they're working through like as a couple
- 1:26:48with each other, right? And then when I work on like
- 1:26:52love scenes, they should be an extension of that.
- 1:26:54So like Araya, for example, like her whole arc with her, her
- 1:27:01romance with Reign is learning how to be vulnerable because
- 1:27:04that was like her big hurdle. That was the thing that was
- 1:27:06keeping her. And that was actually a great,
- 1:27:09like that was great for our for physical like love scenes,
- 1:27:12right? Because that's like a physical
- 1:27:14vulnerability, like you are physically very, very
- 1:27:17vulnerable. And so that gave me like
- 1:27:19something to kind of, you know, hook onto for her arc for like
- 1:27:24all of those scenes. So I'm glad to hear that it it
- 1:27:27like landed for you because that was like pretty satisfying to
- 1:27:31write. And then like in the second
- 1:27:33geology, Misha dealing with like, you know, her faith and
- 1:27:36like loss of faith and dealing with this feeling of being like
- 1:27:39tainted or like dirty and this kind of like religious guilt
- 1:27:43aspect. Yeah, it's always, those are
- 1:27:47always the most interesting ones to write for me.
- 1:27:50I. Love it now because I know you
- 1:27:51have to get going because you have a another interview to do
- 1:27:56so could you? You are very popular today.
- 1:27:59She's a busy lady. Very popular, but will you let
- 1:28:04everybody know where they can can find you on Instagram,
- 1:28:09TikTok, your website and where is your preferred place for
- 1:28:14people to order your book? Oh, wonderful.
- 1:28:18So you can find me at all the places under Carissa Broadbent.
- 1:28:24I have an amazing assistant named Naomi who runs all of my
- 1:28:28social media. So when you look at like, open
- 1:28:30it up and you're like, wow, this all looks great.
- 1:28:32I can take no credit for that. I can.
- 1:28:34Full. Shout out to Naomi, which is
- 1:28:36good because otherwise like nothing would happen, you know,
- 1:28:39on there. So you can find me on all the
- 1:28:41places, Instagram, you know, Facebook, all that stuff.
- 1:28:45I have a newsletter as well that you can sign up for on my
- 1:28:49website, carissabroadbentbooks.com.
- 1:28:52And then in terms of ordering my books.
- 1:28:55Honestly. Order them wherever you want.
- 1:28:57I mean, that's, that's that makes me happy.
- 1:29:00I will say my local indie bookstore Charter Books here in
- 1:29:05Rhode Island, they're based in Newport.
- 1:29:08You can always get any of my books signed and personalized if
- 1:29:11you order through them like at any time, not just like now.
- 1:29:14Any of my books whenever so and they do ship, they ship wherever
- 1:29:19so. Oh, that's a nice thing to know
- 1:29:22because that's nice to be able to have a signed copies and
- 1:29:25stuff. So and that's from that
- 1:29:29bookstore. OK, yes.
- 1:29:31Charter charter books I think I think it is charterbooks.com but
- 1:29:35if Google that like charter books Newport RI you'll you'll
- 1:29:39find them. OK, I'm writing that down
- 1:29:41because I will put a link to them on our our link tree.
- 1:29:47So when your episode comes out, people can go there and they can
- 1:29:50click it and they can order your books right directly from the
- 1:29:52mail. And oh I'll plug this as well
- 1:29:56and if you pre-order the Lion in the Deathless Dark.
- 1:30:00I was very sad that I was not able to tour for this one
- 1:30:05because I will have a like 2-2 week old baby at the time.
- 1:30:09So no touring for me this year. But in lieu of a tour, I do have
- 1:30:15a preorder incentive. So if you preorder the hardcover
- 1:30:18of that book, we have this beautiful alternate dust jacket
- 1:30:22that one of my favorite artists Letters by Lila did.
- 1:30:26So it's like typographical and it's got like lions and it's
- 1:30:29it's really beautiful. And you get that for free if you
- 1:30:32preorder it, including from charter or anywhere else.
- 1:30:35So that is I. Think I did that because I think
- 1:30:39I did that when you did. My mind is everywhere.
- 1:30:42It's all over the. I get it.
- 1:30:43I get it. But I believe I did that because
- 1:30:46you have to show copy that you your receipt that you purchased,
- 1:30:50you pre-ordered the book and then you.
- 1:30:53So I believe I did do that So. Yes, my publisher has I think
- 1:30:57it's it should be on my see, this is where I'm like, oh, I
- 1:31:00let I let my assistant do too much because I'm like, oh,
- 1:31:03where's the where's the form? Yes, my publisher is running the
- 1:31:08pre-order campaign. You just like submit your
- 1:31:09receipt and they will send you the desk jacket that can your
- 1:31:12little alternate cover. So it's like your own little
- 1:31:14launch SE kind of. It's really a neat thing, you
- 1:31:19know, that they're doing. I like that.
- 1:31:21I don't think I've ever, I don't think I've ever had that
- 1:31:25something like that with a, with a pre-order that I have done.
- 1:31:29But also pre-orders are also very important.
- 1:31:31So everybody do go out and pre-order The Lion and the
- 1:31:34Deathless dark because that helps All authors. pre-orders
- 1:31:38are always very, very, very important.
- 1:31:40Even though I love pre ordering but for authors it is very
- 1:31:43important for their for everything.
- 1:31:47Definitely. So please, please do it.
- 1:31:49That would be great. Thank you.
- 1:31:52But hey, but thank you so very much for joining us.
- 1:31:55I enjoyed this. I hope you come back and and
- 1:31:57visit because I have a whole bunch of new besties that are
